Most of the songs feel like the one. I mean there's e difference between them. But still there are also some slow and simple melodies, and they are so pleasure for your ears.

I agree with the majority view here - 1st side of the album is incredible, 2nd half is awful!

I wasn't a big Michael Jackson fan growing up, though I do love Thriller, how can you not. Some good songs and some not so good ones. I've listen a few times but outside of the big hits I don't love it.

Its just before he refined his pop into superstar status so Off The Wall keep some of its funk roots. But likewise, it sounds like the sort of thing you would get on Radio 4. A mixed bag

Quincy and the musicians get a 5 for this record. The songwriting is… well, they’re disco songs, so a 2. Jackson’s vocals are fantastic but he was a creep, or became a creep and that’s hard to look past. Averaging all that out, including weighting the categories… carry the one, divide by the total…

(separating the artist from the art) First few songs are great. Starts off real strong, but the latter 2/3 is mediocre. It's listenable as background music, that's about it. Nothing particularly interesting.

1-5 were great. Could have done without 6-9. Burn This Disco Out sounded like it could be on a Bruno Mars album, which is a great thing.

This album feels like 2 different albums between the 1st and 2nd halves. The first half is iconic. The second.....is fine. I always have a bit of a gross feeling listening to MJ because the guy creeped me out.

First time listening to MJs music before it became ultra pop. Really enjoyed it, the music is so precise and matches his vocals in terms of ability. Some real bangers here, full of delightful bass lines and strings that ain't got no business being that infectious. The only thing for me is that a few tracks just fell off or missed the mark and became indistinct. Perhaps that is just me associating him with being the king of pop rather than a disco dynamo. Perfectly good pop/R&B/disco album, if very much of its time, that I wish I liked a bit better than I do. But Michael was undeniably respectable as the king of pop before he mutated into the king of WTF...

I liked the first half but the second half was kind of meh

The laddie can clearly sing, in whatever style he/his people want. Ranges from disco to balladry, with hints of funk and rock. First two tracks were the big singles, but she's out of my life and the title track were more enjoyable for me.

It's tough to separate the art from the artist. But he was only 20 when he made this, which is kind of incredible.

This album showed signs of what Michael Jackson was about to be however some of the songs still showed him as a younger pop singer. This album is still good and it’s a more funky slow burn album. 7.1/10

Did I enjoy it? Yes. Would I listen to it again? Probably not. The story of Wacko Jacko is ultimately a very sad one. His huge wealth of talent was pushed forward by a work ethic probably quite literally beaten into him as a child. His music industry connections, the people who stood to make money from him, pushed that forward to his personal detriment. His internalised racism and disturbing, just plain wrong attitude toward and treatment of children may well have existed outside of his wealth. He may well have become a drug addict; so many Americans did through the mis-prescribing of opioids. But ultimately, one can't help but focus on the negative, even while enjoying the vast talent, enthusiasm and hard graft that went into Jackson's career. How much of his ouvre was his own talent and work? A lot of it. But the weaker tracks on this album show that it takes more than a talented front-man to make something great. The great tracks on album are great. But they're a combination of great talents in all aspects. A great front-man alone cannot compensate for mediocre material.

Never been a big fan of Michael's music, though I acknowledge that he was very talented. If I had to listen to one Michael Jackson album it would probably be this one. More of a Motown-y feel that some of his later work. 3 stars.

I’ve never listened to any non-top hits Michael tracks, and I guess this is why. Other than the first two tracks this was a fairly non descript soft disco album, which is fine but I was expecting a bit more wow factor. My top pick is of course ‘Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough’

Absolute fire album. The first track is by one of the best intro to an album tracks of all time. Can't believe this guy released bangers pre-thriller but goddamn is this heat! But let's be real, it is a forgotten album amongst the ranks of MJ albums, can't even imagine amongst all pop albums. Solid 3/5.

I totally understand why Thriller is on this list. Off the Wall, not so much. I know this is supposed to be the album where Michael Jackson really established himself as an adult solo artist, and Quincy Jones obviously knew what he was doing behind the board, but none of that made me enjoy listening to it. If “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” were actually true, it would’ve stopped a long time ago. I’ve heard that song at enough weddings to last the rest of my life. “Rock with You” is another one I recognize immediately, but familiarity doesn’t necessarily mean I want to hear it again. There’s plenty of talent here, and the production is about as polished as late 70s disco and R&B gets. That’s also part of the problem for me. Too much disco, too slick, and not enough that I actually wanted to come back to. Thriller has songs that justify the reputation. This mostly reminded me that I’m glad disco died.

MJ has generally fared poorly in the reflected light of my fandom of other, far better artists, but has some fun tracks, no doubt. I’m generally team-Thriller though. Off the Wall peaks in the first five minutes, rarely a good sign.

A good exercise in can we (and should we) separate the art from the artist? Couldn't help feeling someone uncomfortable while listening to this. Though even putting that aside, I don't think it's one I'd choose to listen to again.

Not really a big fan of MJ

I know he's a global phenomenon but frankly he's always got on my wick, all that unnecessary squeaking and whooping. I don't need to have seen the film (I haven't) to know that there has to be some unfortunate back story to all the weirdness. This album has some great vibrant pop-funk music that almost makes the album listenable (to a non-funk fan). The music scores a 2.

Being so real, I've never liked this one. I think Don't Stop Til You Get Enough is borderline intolerable. Plus we had multiple albums from him in short succession and my understanding is that makes them bad.

Found this quite poor. Didn’t enjoy it very much and was pleased when it finished. One good song don’t not an album make. One of the best things I can say about this album is that is makes me appreciate good music even more.

First of all, MJ was not a great dude, worthy of cancellation by today's standards. Why am I listening to this album but not the Kanye West albums? Because Michael is dead, he isn't continuing to hurt others the way that Kanye's hate speech does. The first song is an absolute banger, but the next three are totally forgettable. I went into this thinking, okay time to hear why he was the king of pop. I think his showman ship and many huge pop hits is the explanation of why. Off the Wall was decent, but yeah... this album is carried by the hit song that opens it.

Starts out strong with some decent pop music, some recognizable tunes. Then drops off with these slow r&b type crooner songs.

Jackson's breakthrough album with Quincy at the helm is a polished release that took disco mainstream with its inclusive mix of pop, funk and soft rock.

We all know that my inner demons create frictions with enjoying pop, both the musical and beverage variety.. Therefore, this album mostly annoyed me. I acknowledge that the music is uplifting and positive which I really appreciate, plus this sounds like 80s while being in the 70s which is impressive. So it gets a 2.5 ... but rounded down.

There's like one good song on this album (Don't Stop Til You Get Enough), but the rest of this thing was ultimately forgettable and just kind of exist. Overall, this was underwhelming given MJ's other work and I'm not sure it deserves a spot on this list.

Sensual, cocky, and sensitive. I understand why this album was so significant as a breakaway from his childhood career. I’ve never been the biggest fan of disco, but the roles it plays in this album are definitely lively and playful in a way I haven’t listened to for awhile. I’d heard “Rock With You” plenty before but little of the other songs of this album. As an album it flows very cohesively, classically from the more energetic to the soulful and slow. Micheal Jackson’s name kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth at the allegations he would later receive. I don’t know if I’ll find myself going back to this album a lot. In addition to his infamy, to me many of the aspects of this album feel a bit corny and unrelatable, the ‘moans’ and innuendo kind of just read as forced and uncomfortable! And the songs become a bit repetitive. But this is definitely a foundational one in pop history regardless of my own tastes, and I am grateful to be branching out and learning. Admittedly, the bounciness of many of these beats had me moving along in my seat, I’m only human. Listened to this album fully once while occupied and nearly halfway through while more focused on the music. Favorite song from this album was Get On The Floor. The funky bass and ‘silliness’ was fun and read as more natural in this song. And for some reason the way Jackson says “especially” is strangely cathartic and kinda funny to me. I love the way YOU shake that thing, girl. Especially!

"Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is a great song; I enjoyed that one. But issues with the problematic musician aside, a whole record of this kind of music doesn't work for me. I guess there's a reason that all the "Pop" subgenres are down in the basement in my summary bar graph. 2 stars

Oh not the M Jackson issue again. Music wise I was always more a Princess fan. Jackson musically is a shade too smooth, too much the production is king. This is the only album of his I ever have owned so have heard it, so after 2 songs today decided don’t need to hear again. See there’s a movie coming out, bet that’s all kinds of image scrubbing. It’s Jackson so ceiling on any score whatever the music, 2 Star

Funky & een paar klassiekers maar beetje eentonig.

As someone who finds disco music insufferable, I had a hard time getting through this. I'm fully aware of Michael Jackson's importance in the history of pop music, and I get why some people would love this record, but that doesn't make it easier to listen. Growing up in the 80s, I've already heard enough of him for a lifetime, and I really can’t get past his voice (which is probably what made me hate him in the first place). I’ll admit that Don’t Stop and Working Day & Night are groovy songs. But the rest is just typical disco nonsense - music for mindless late night dancing, sweating and mating with inebriated people. The slow ballads like She’s Out My Life are complete torture. Still, it's better than most of his later works - Michael Jackson had not yet turned into the crazy fame monster he would later become, and there are still trace elements of good Motown funk and soul here, making the whole thing a bit more listenable. 3/10

Favorite tracks: Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough, Get on the Floor Torn on this one because Michael is so talented and there are a few absolute bangers on here, but even with this talent this album ends up coming up short for me. The back half of this album especially seems like a grocery store soundtrack.

Opening track is just class

Quincy Jones is a master, - 1st track "Don't Stop" what an opener! if you hear this in a night club environment and don't feel the need to move: man... there is clearly something wrong with you, arguably one of the most danceable rifts of all time. Next up "Rock You", taking it down a notch, but if it followed Don't Stop - Brother....you'd still stay on that dancefloor. "Workin' Day & night" and "Get on the Floor"- just album fillers really, then, despite being a slow burner the album track "Off the Wall" you'd be back on that floor as it becomes a bit of a toon! "Girlfriend" track is awful. "She's out of my life" next which is a beautiful heart-breaking classic - you can hear the emotional vulnerability in MJ's voice. The rest of the album is average in my view. As for MJ the man himself, it's a sad tail really how someone so talented, blessed and successful could leave such a sad, shady life & damage so many other people on the way.

Oof, MJ is a tragic figure and this one doesn't have any of my favorites.

I grew up in an anti-Michael Jackson household and didn’t really know any of his music until after he died, and even then have never really been a fan so this was interesting as it’s not one of his albums where I feel I know many of the songs. And I didn’t really enjoy it very much. After the first two tracks I found it quite dull and was relieved to get to the end. These songs didn’t feel like they had any of the features that make his hits so distinctive

Of course this global child-abuse cabal will hold public interest until we discover a man on TikTok who says "orange" in a funny way or perhaps get behind a new dance craze called "ignoring the horrors" set to a hoppin' new groove from ohh I don't know, let's say SZA. She's due. While our heads are buried in the sand, lets go back in time to the near-abandoned roller rinks of yore. Request a funky deep cut, get a microwave slice of pizza and a blue raspberry slushie and start spinnin' pal. Aliens will find those items in your body in a thousand years, completely undigested and in their original form. Separate art from the artist they say. Me bobbing my head to some of this feels like nodding along to passages of "Mein Kampf." The head motions don't so much symbolize agreement, but rather recognize some fuckin' NASTY basslines. I am but another poor, naïve soul with a brain full of microplastics, and the attention span of a sick budgie in a hall of mirrors. Therefore, I rock pretty aggressively with like 2 of these songs. The rest suck, but still... This child molester really can sing and his enablers/backing band rock hard! 2-2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Rock With You, Workin' Day and Night

This album is like Thriller without that brief interlude with decent songs.

Honestly, kind of middling for an MJ album. Outside of a couple front-loaded single hits, falls flat as a whole.

I think Michael Jackson is alright. I don’t mind his stuff, I think he has a really good voice, but I wouldn’t really put his stuff on myself. Still, this album was alright. I liked the first two songs but I also knew those ones already.

Not his best

As absolutely huge MJ is - I've never really been a massive fan of the music much. Even the big hits I feel like I've heard a million times but when I actually listen to them I'm like, I don't think this is that good. That being said, it's not all bad. I've already had Thriller in this list and it didn't get much of a rating from me despite having a few of his monster hits on there. There's a couple on this one so far that I don't mind like "Workin Day and Night" and "Get on the Floor" which does have some great energy, and amazing basslines. Overall I wouldn't say this album has done much in the way of changing my opinion; yes he was a great all round entertainer and is loved by many, but his songs rarely do too much for me.

Second MJ album and the first within his included discography. It's kinda crazy to think that Michael Jackson has ten albums within his discography. As a non-fan, I've always had the impression that he released only a handful of albums for whatever reason. All of his most iconic songs are relegated to two or three releases. Anyways, I'm curious to hear what this mid-point in his discography sounds like. I'm not sure whether I'll be hearing anything I recognise in this - the cover isn't as iconic as Thriller or Bad. It's alright. Very polished as far as late-70s pop albums go. The production is pretty sleek. There are many nice-sounding effects and electronic flourishes on these tracks, which is easily the stand-out aspect of this album. The bass is pretty good too, though that's more or less where my praises for this album end. The prominent disco sound isn't really my thing, and Jackson lacks the charisma and presence that he would later find on Thriller. That isn't a criticism, per se. It's a pretty big testament to how far he came between those two albums. Overall, this album made for some nice background noise, but I wasn't too invested in listening beyond that. "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" is vaguely familiar, immediately dispelling my doubts as to whether this album had any familiar tracks. I like the percussion - it's pretty tight. The cowbell - my beloved guilty pleasure instrument - is prominently featured, I like the bassy sound and some of the electronic embellishments were pretty good. Jackson's vocals were a little repetitious, but they were good overall. No questions on whether this belongs in here - it's a Michael Jackson album. I cosign this inclusion.

While MJ is considered one of the GOATs of rock, I don't think this has aged well. Don't get me wrong there were a couple of great songs on the album but I won't be listening to this again

Jeg har aldri vært noen MJ fan. Vet ikke engang om jeg kunne svart på hvem som har Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough om det kom opp på en musikkquiz! Anyways, det er låt da; skiva kunne egentlig vært den låta i 40 minutter, og det hadde vært helt greit. Det når aldri slike høyder igjen, men synes egentlig det er helt alright disco... frem til sidebytte. Girlfriend er horribel. She's Out of My Life klarer bragden å være enda verre -- ja, det er kanskje det dårligste sporet vi har hatt så langt! Og selv om den nådde rock bottom der, kommer det seg aldri på beina igjen. Det er liksom blitt balladeinfisert. Jeg var helt klar for å gi denne skiva en solid 3er og si: Michael, you ain't so bad! Men den B-siden må slettes fra verden. Burn This Disco Out? Kan vi heller reise tilbake i tid og brenne de siste 20 minuttene av mastertapen til Off the Wall?

Disco og RNB er ikke helt min greie. Det låter smooth og velprodusert, men syns det er få gode låter. Åpningssporet åpenbar banger. Hadde tenkt å gi 3, men så hørte jeg siste halvdel av plata.

Dette albumet starter med to perfekte poplåter. Det er bare synd at resten av albumet ikke klarer å henge med. Michael Jackson får også virkelig vise sin emosjonelle dybde i Shes out of my life. Det må være en av de dårligste låtene jeg noen sinne har hørt.

Yeah, well, that was okay ... some big hits to start us off, then a bunch of not so great songs that follow. Never was a big fan of his, but give him credit, he had some great songs in his career.

This is a good album by a talented men. But I will never listen again.

I understand the appeal but for me this is just mind numbing and gets more and more vacuous as the album wears on... And yes, I have separated the music from the person.

Torn on this because are we separating art from artist? Luckily this album isn't actually that great, so problem solved. Opens on a banger and miscellaneous in the afters.

The production is great. The basslines are really good. But it's disco. And no matter how good it is, you lose at least one star for disco.

Listening to this had me counting down the minutes for a Clash album to kill off disco.

Songs get samey and it's hard to separate the guy from the music in this case

A few good songs but a lot of filler

Off The Wall shows Michael Jackson’s early pop star power, but it doesn’t fully deliver. While the big singles are energetic and polished, much of the album feels uneven and overly tied to disco trends of its era. The result is a record with standout moments but little lasting depth.

Musikalisch einfach nicht meins, auch wenn es in die Beine geht (kann man nicht leugnen). Über den Menschen dahinter möchte ich hier gar nicht erst anfangen.

Jackson was obviously a master of his craft, and I suppose you can see it in his work. But I quite simply just didn't enjoy listening to this, it didn't hit in any of the right places. Perhaps I'll read this review one day and wonder what was going through my head, but I can't give this any more than a 3. I recognise that Michael Jackson was an amazing artist, but his music means nothing to me personally. Probably doesn't help that the guy slept with kids.

Man, do I hate disco, even when Michael Jackson’s doing it. Admittedly, Off the Wall is better than most disco records, but I’m still not really into it. Thriller is pretty solid, but I’m not really into Off the Wall. 2.5/5

I've never liked Michael Jackson and this is an album full of songs you already know and didn't really like. I suppose it's among the best of that late 70s disco but not something I'll make a habit of listening to.

Too much falsetto, the songs are just too long when he’s just repeating the same thing over and over, they all sound the same, I’m really not impressed which is a shame considering it’s the King of Pop.

For an album as influential as this was in terms of production, it's not very good is it? I mean, it pretty much set a template for a sort of pop album, that's still followed slavishly today. But almost nothing off gets any radio play, "Don't Stop ..." is about it and then rarely compared to Jackson's other stuff.

MJ is just a little generic for me sometimes.

He was never really as funky as on a few of these songs again, and it's a bit of a milestone as the one before Thriller, and his first album with Quincy Jones, and the production is bloody tight. So, yeah, monumental - in a historical sense as well. I just don't dig it an awful lot, except for the first and last song. Besides those, there's way too much smooth schmaltziness on this. I mean... that whole sequence of songs from Off the Wall onwards (except for the final track) is just... tough to listen to for me.

This is probably a bit of a hot take, but I don't really like Michael Jackson that much. I grew up in the 80s at the peak of his popularity, and compared to other pop stars of the era, like Prince and Madonna, MJ never quite did it for me. I feel like even his best stuff has a bit of a cheesy element to it. I think this album starts off pretty decently with "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You", but it goes quickly downhill from there. The mix of wimpy ballads and bad disco just isn't my thing. 2 stars.

Voice like butter, undeniably talented, and boy did they try to shoehorn Michael into being a disco star with this one. Thank goodness he didn't stick to the genre, because much better offerings were to come from him.

The horns on the opener are so distinct they become songs unto themselves, yet the rest is forgettable. That's how a lot of this album is for me: there are some ideas, moments and quirks that are pique my interest; everything in between is a drag.

Disappointed with this. I remember growing up watching E! Docos about Michael Jackson. Off the Wall was heralded as the turning point in MJ’s career, from child star to serious adult recording artist. So I expected something a little more. The first two tracks are classic pop disco. Literally everything else here is forgettable, and mediocre. Michael’s voice is endlessly listenable, but it doesn’t save this album from being little more than a hit vehicle. ⭐️⭐️

Another tough one. I used to love this album so much but it’s hard not to relate the music to Michael Jackson’s paedophilic legacy. I’m sure he has destroyed a lot of lives. This is a 4 star album but minus 2 for kiddy fiddling. Some people think that kiddy fiddling is only worth minus 1 star. I’m taking this seriously, minus 2 stars. MJ what an awesome talent encapsulated in the mind and body of a rich and famous pervert.

Familiar with his name and more famous songs, this is the same style. Not sure disco's my thing, I didn't find it engaging and did not finish.

I kind of enjoyed "Bad", despite my expectations. This was very bland in comparison.

Not my kind of Disco

I'm a Millennial raised on classic rock and Christian music. I could finally listen to that "modern" music in college. So, Michael, or any of the Jacksons, have no nostalgia for me. His influence is also hard to pin down, because all of my knowledge of this era is retroactive and filtered through SO MANY hot takes, which is the only way we can talk about pop media from the late 70's on. So... I don't like it very much. Thriller was better. Bad was better. This may be "influential," but I'm not sure how much of that is from the artistry itself, the "popification" of disco and funk, or the effect it had on Jackson's next albums. Regardless, it's pretty samey, none of the songs really stand out, and outside of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," it didn't really cement a presence. It' so simultaneously diverse and noncommittal that I don't know when I would want this. Again, this is the exact era and genres of music that I have the least understanding of, but I'd rather listen to a lot of other disco, funk, and pop of the time than this. And that very much includes Thriller and Bad.

Michael Jackson is always a dilemma for me - even before all the scandals came to light I always thought he was overrated, and obviously after all that came to light it only made it more difficult to pick the good parts out of his music. I guess I could dance to this.

A bit too disco for me

MJ is a featherweight, a tragic punchline popinjay. But this is a Quincy Jones joint, so the first couple of singles at least do absolutely slap. The connective tissue is weaksauce milquetoast disco pop but hey, it's sort of alright.

I'm not big on Michael Jackson in the first place, but as far as his music goes, "Off The Wall" is definitely not remarkable.

Thriller is my Michael Jackson go-to album. This one doesn't hold up the same. That said, I do quite enjoy Off the Wall.

Super disco-y, which means all the tracks feel homogenous and drawn out. It wants to be fun but if you're not at a club in the 70's it's pretty boring

Ever since the allegations and information that has come out about Michael its hard to sperate the art from the artist. He is musically a genius but a very flawed person for many reasons. I do not listen to MJ unless its on the radio I can never face putting it. Anyway listened to Off The Wall and its great front to back. Would be a 4 star but can only give 2 for well reasons.

I know it's wildly influential, and I enjoy some of the individual tracks on there, but when my overwhelming feeling coming out of an album is "Christ, that went on a bit", it's rarely a good sign.

Really not my sort of thing. A lot of these songs are classics, so they’ve been everywhere for decades, proper Radio 2 fare. Having said all that, you can’t deny the quality, and the Quincy Jones production really shows.

"Keep on, To the post office" I feel that this is going to be the first of many "it's just not for me" albums on this list - this has clearly been put together with some expert musicians, it's very well executed and the levels of each part seem exactly where they need to be... and I still don't like it. The first couple of tracks are very high-energy disco, and I'm a fan of the accompaniment on Working Day and Night, but Michael Jackson has never done it for me from a singing / songwriting standpoint, and this album has unfortunately not changed my perception on that. Additionally, I feel that the album definitely runs out of juice somewhere around the second half, and never quite gets it back. All in all, I can understand if this is your jam, but it's just not doing it for me. Faves: Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Working Day and Night

I’ve never been a Michael Jackson fan, even though he was exceptionally popular through middle and high school. And over time, I’ve grown to like it even less because I still hear it too much. Not sure I bag tell you why his music bugs me, but generally Iv would turn the dial of he’s on the radio.

Not a big MJ fan but I did enjoy listening because there were songs I had never heard before.

I mean it is vintage, and I mean vintage MJ -- and Rock with you is a good song but it isn't a spectacular record.

What would weddings do with the 1st song? So back when MJ was black, he was disco Mike. Not really a fan. Rock with you is ok and a few others that are more soulful. Often sounds to be channeling Stevie Wonder which I guess makes sense since he is sitting in on some songs. But a wouldn’t compare the songs to Stevie’s. My son likes to remind me that the war is over, but disco still sucks. 2.4

In a nutshell: two bangers, eight whimpers. Michael is vocally talented. But the pop disco beat was overused and the funk/R&B elements were borrowed heavily from Stevie Wonder et al. Is it me or does the album feels kinda chaste? Tracks 3 to 10 didn’t do anything for me, yet I understand why the album was popular. Overall: 3/10

I got ‘Bad’ about a month ago and have just re-read my notes on that. Everything I said there also applies to this album. But in a nutshell - Never liked MJ or his music. Very slick and well produced album. The chunky bass lines are a treat, but otherwise not a lot stood out to me.

Slick manufactured pop. Clearly a lot of work went into this. Prefer it to Thriller overall as a suite of songs, but it is still fairly standard pop music. Hard to listen to this a 'just music', given all that we now know about Jacko.
