Reviews (page 2 of 7)

Incredible listen. He still has it, all the usual Morrissey quirks and odd singing banter. I miss hearing his voice matched with Marr's guitar, but this will do nicely. Really enjoyed it.

First of the gang to die is a banger

no puedo odiarte, Morrissey

What a shame.

Combines Alt-rock with pop and gives this nice sound. Very relatable songs, especially I Forgive Jesus. Very solid album.

Morrissey is surprisingly good. Unique lyrics and unusually way of singing over the melodies that are also very good. I was thinking of giving it a 4 but throughout it doesn't really have a bad song

Ótimo disco!

First surprise. This album is super good then did a little research and figured out this is the front man for The Smiths. Saw he wasn't a very good person but rating this album purely on the music and nothing else and I thought this was a super good album.

This is the peak of Morrissey's latter solo career (maybe his whole solo career), and ushered in a series of subsequent, wryly-observed, croon albums. This remains the best though, from the immediacy of 'Irish Blood, English Heart' and 'First of the Gang to Die', to the slow-burn, sweeping ballads in between. He also confounds this idea of being ultra right-wing with his take down of American politics in 'America is Not the World' - a highly prescient sentiment (although he may have since confounded that confoundment). Variously in the cross hairs are the royal family, all politicians, all singers, Jesus - actually all people except himself. He's a right card! I think about the only one that feels a bit like a 'Southpaw Grammar' throwaway is 'I Like You', a song with more of a b-side charm. Overall I think it's (often subtly) glorious. And his best solo work.

Perfect music for when you feel unloved and lonely.

This album contains some of Morrissey's worst lyrics... but still, 5 stars. That's just how fanboys are.

Really enjoyed this album he has an amazing voice

Liked this one a lot! Fun listen.

I forgot how good this album was

Bought this album in ‘04 when it was released and welcomed Morrissey’s return. Great album. Favorite “First of the Gang to Die” & “How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel are two of the best.

You Are The Quarry is the album that began my love affair with the great man himself, Morrissey. When it came out, I played it endlessly and went to around eight shows on the tour. Listening again twenty years later, it still sounds fantastic. Lyrically, this album is superb — classic Morrissey wit, melancholy, and sharp observation. The music holds up brilliantly too, full of swagger and melody. Tracks like I Have Forgiven Jesus, First of the Gang to Die, and Irish Blood, English Heart remain standout moments, but honestly, every song here is a belter. This is an easy 5/5 for me. Favourite track: Irish Blood, English Heart and First of the Gang to Die Least favourite track: Every song deserves its place Album artwork: One of Morrissey’s simpler covers, but still iconic

This thing hits like crazy when you're 20 and sad and kind of stupid.

Very excited for this! I actually have not listened to much of Morrissey by himself, only with da boys. Damn, America Is Not The World, hits hard as fuck right now. Very timely. Irish Blood, English Heart - I like this one a lot. This is the problem with listening to this album at work, I wanna read through the lyrics and really digest it but I am also trying to answer emails. The world certainly is full of crashing bores and i am not one of them. How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel is cracking me up and is also excellent. All The Lazy Dykes is melancholy in a funny way.

After the slow-death of the rather turgid ‘maladjusted’ Morrissey, the Queen Mother of indie-pop was resuscitated with 2004’s ‘You Are The Quarry’. Whilst not in my top 5 Moz albums, these songs felt like a total renewal, or debut. ‘Irish Blood…’ ‘I have forgiven Jesus’ and ‘1st of the gang to die’ stand tall amongst his catalogue and remain set list staples to this date. The songs themselves are at times hilarious, poisonous, lonely and defiant. The extra tracks recorded at this time were of equal quality, with so many amazing b-sides released. This could’ve been a double album easily. Fantastic album, career high point and an easy route in for the newbies. As with all things Moz, there followed moments of musical genius, awfulness and questionable politics and songs about Israel. I hate him and I love him. 5/5 and I said what I said

the man is a racist but he makes great music what can i say? i hate him

One of the best albums of that decade...or even for eternity;-)

One of my favourite albums ever. Perfect. The musical quality and the lyrics combined make one of the masterpieces in the world of music. I’m so happy this came up.

I did not expect to like this. Morrisey is definitely a mood, but this is far more interesting than The Smiths to me.

After years of adriftness and shadowy lurking, our Moz returned with all guns blazing. You Are the Quarry is, from front to back, all killer and no filler with even the lesser song on here still being worthy of its inclusion. What more can I say other than it is the comeback that was needed for Morrissey to remain ahead of the game? Tremendous album that's aged quite well.

ufff… morrissey, de ex frontman vo minere spontane antwort uf d‘frag nach minere lieblingsband - the smiths <3 ich han no nie probiert in wort z‘fasse werum ich so grosse fan vo de musig vo the smiths respektive vom morrissey bin… us ziitgründ wirdis au ah dere stell nöd chönne mache aber es hitted eifach ganz en spezifische sweet spot ih mir inne wo mi meistens happy, mengisch aber au chli sad macht :‘) und ja ich wott eigentli wüki nöd so inflationär mit dene höchtsbewertige umgah aber das album verdient ih mine auge scho es 4.75, was nach mine kalkulatione 5 puntos ergid also ich gib mathematik d’schuld, ade mitenand

Goddamn so good

This is an album I already have in heavy rotation and man is it a good one. Favorites include First of the Gang to Die, Irish Blood / English Heart, and Let Me Kiss You; but they're all legit.

Love this album. Morrisey is ever the melodramatic crooner. This album walked so MCR could run. Songs like “I like you” speak to my inner teenager

Absurd to me how consistantly good Morrissey is. I go into every album of his expecting to hate it but always come out blown away. This album is hilarious at times with these ridiculous lyrics that only a guy like Morrissey could write or even record. Awesome record with lots of bangers

Classy

I was listening to morrissey when the power came back...10/10

15/9/24 Surprisingly thoroughly enjoyed this album.

Är ju så bra :(

Irish Blood, English Heart First of the Gang to Die 4-5

Super mellow, I liked every song - great vibes.

Okay whatever this was a 5 I don't even care about my terrible rating abilities anymore. Something about this album just did it for me, all the songs had those lyrical, dramatic, yearning melodies and I am a sucker for those. Plus I love The Smiths. Favourite songs were all of them. Just read that he is a racist oops sorry

English is not my first language and I cannot always understand the lyrics of the songs. I just hope that they are not saying the same BS that he says in many of his interviews and that they are not racist, far-right stuff. My score is based solely on artistic merit (minus the lyrics) and the fact that I like him so much as an artist.

Simply Morrissey.

Stand by my belief that Morrissey gets way too much hate. This is a great album which is kind of comedic in both its candour and hyperbole.

The typical Morrissey album, but somehow different, somehow better

very interesting album, very good sound. Enjoyed it a lot.

I’m into this kind of music and will definitely do a deeper dive.

Simply Morrissey.

Melody & great lyrics. Ignoring is questionable politics (hard I know) this is an album to go back to repeatedly.

So. Stupid. Good.

Excellent as ever

Never really listened to Morrisey, but I like this album a lot. His lyrics are poetic in a refreshing way. Lots of interesting guitar sounds on this album as well. It’s cool how every song sounds different, but they somehow all fit together. Great stuff all the way through.

Excelent. Beautiful songs

Could it be I like you?

Q. What does Shack like to eat for supper? A. Quorn Chops*! *Neil Morrisey special

Amé también "America Is Not The World" (excepto por lo de I love you), "The World Is Full of Crashing Bores", "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?", "I Like You" y pues claro, otra ya conocida también: "First of the Gang to Die". 10/10

Several flying scissor of a fight on this album, but after much thinking, I’ll give it a four for the rest of the album

Married to a goth woman, I've heard plenty of Morrissey in my day. I actually bought this record myself, though, and really enjoy it, which is good, because if I rate Morrissey poorly on this site, she'll know, and murder me in my sleep. "Steely blue eyes with no love in them scan the world." OUCH. Come Back to Camden is the song after which our son is named. I also believe it was the tour for this record during which my wife got on stage and rushed Moz while pregnant with the same kid.

7 - GOOD

Better than Coldplay

Really like the overall sound of Morrissey, very angsty - reminds me of my youth during my angsty teenage years.

Equal parts melancholy, wit, and theatrical self-pity. Like spending an afternoon with the world’s most charmingly miserable auntie.

As far as Morrissey albums go, this is pretty good. I love the song titles.

How can someone with such a soothing voice and taste for interesting lyrics become a right-wing nutcase?

Surprisingly powerful songs from a man growing more reactionary and chauvinistic with time

Some of the most amusing lyrics I’ve heard in a while!!

Not my favourite Morrissey album, but still pretty decent. At least, without the lyrics it's still pretty decent. The lyrics are... well, indicative of Morrissey's opinions on the world. Which nobody wants to hear by this point.

szczerze świetny, bardzo mnie zaskoczył będę go słuchać

Another good Moz album - it may not be the view of the bien pensant but wondering if I prefer his solo stuff to The Smiths - I largely appreciated his anomie on display here.."'I've been dreaming of a time when The English are sick to death of Labor and Tories"!!

Cracking.

Rockig und angenehm zu hören. Interessante Songs, gute Stimme. 4/5

My two thoughts: Why am I listening to this? And yet, it actually sounds kind of good. And I hate that I feel this way.

Good but not his best

I liked it. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.

I love the Smiths. And though his music never approached the magic of the Smiths, I love early Morrissey in the wake of their breakup. But sometime in the late 90s I kinda lost track of Morrissey, and up until today had not heard this album. Sometime in the 90s Morrissey made a public statement about being celibate, and I remember thinking that seems like the kind of thing someone who really craves attention would say. More recently he has spouted some pretty off the wall racist, xenophobic and far right political supporting rhetoric. This leaves me wondering if that is the real Morrissey or if it's simply the rantings of the attention hound that I detected years ago. At any rate, I tried my best to separate the art from the artist while listening to You Are the Quarry. The opening track sounds great, though I found the lyrics to be pretty ham-fisted. I found it funny that Morrissey sings that America has a big head. Which may be true but fits him equally as well! The other up tempo tunes on here are definitely the strongest -- Irish Blood, How Can Anybody, First of the Gang, Let Me Kiss You. While some of the slower selections like Come Back to Camden, All the Lazy and You Know I Couldn't Last feel stodgy and plodding.

After listening: "-> 2004. One of the busiest years of my life and part of a near decade where I essentially lost music and movies. In the first song I hear a familiar 80s vocal sound. Took a look and sure enough, the Smiths lead singer, the song ""How Soon Is Now?"" " This is solid. I like this album's sound, especially the vocals. Excellent song writing, some beautiful songs. On the fringes of 5. Track ranking: America Couldn't Last Like you Sorry Irish Kiss Boxes Jesus Camden Dykes Gang How

morrissey, the smiths… poco más que decir es estado chill puro

It's just really good isn't it. Complicated. Funny old world.

i’ve never listened to a morissey album before but I enjoyed this a lot! real lyrics that spoke on a lot of different topics

Love morrissey’s music, his lyrics are silly

This album gets better as it goes. Morrissey is a real.talemt. So much so that he can make his acerbic and even mean spiriitedness into catchy songs. His talents extend to his voice which somehow allows him to repeat lazy dykes in a way that somehow spunds great.

FAVS (top 3): america is not the world, come back to camden, how can anybody possibly know how i feel? mençoes honrosas: i gave forgiven jesus, first of the gang to die, i like you, you know i coudnt last gente? pela capa eu daria nada e achei q seria um album super chato q eu ia dormir mas É MO DIVERTIDO? e bem romantico, eu gostei bastante mas odiei a capa pq nsei oqq é isso mas enfim KKKKKK musicas boas!! nota final: 4.5/5

There are probably too many solo Morrissey albums on this list. Having said that, I like Morrissey so I’m never mad about it, and this might be the most enjoyable solo record I’ve heard of his yet. I laughed out loud a bunch. No one writes lyrics quite like him. On this album, he acts somewhere between a stand-up comic and an op-ed columnist, airing out his grievances with the world and the people in it. The music is great. I was banging my head to a few of these. The production is clean and polished without sacrificing the hard rock edge. And his vocals are pristine on every track. That’s especially important on an album like this where the lyrics are the main focus. It’s great to hear his punchlines beautifully sung but dripping with not-subtle-at-all irony. Obsessed with this album cover. It’s so good.

Good album! I quite like Morrissey an this was a great comeback album!

I did not expect to enjoy this but I did. I don't think I'll return to it but enjoyed my time with it

You Are the Quarry (Morrissey) songs I liked: Let Me Kiss You 'A vulnerable ballad about a desperate plea for love and acceptance, despite its apparent rudeness" All the Lazy Dykes "A contemplative song where the author encourages his friends (a lesbian couple) to leave their quiet, boring world and explore life" - added to my favorites. Summary: I really enjoyed the album, and this genre is a balm for my soul. In the album, he criticizes America and the hypocrisy of politicians. He also sings about the search for love.

Just interesting enough for 4 stars or B-.

I’ve listened to Morriset in the past, though I’m not sure I knew any of these songs. Even at first listen I was struck but the melodious sounds and evocative lyrics.

Go on Morrissey you chud. Few good songs

80/100. When Morrissey delivers vocal performances like this, it’s hard for the album to fail. Think what you want about the guy but he sure can sing and his voice sounds incredibly strong and confident. The writing is good as well with plenty of sharp observations and that specific blend of melancholy and humor that he is known for.

00’s Rock ⭐️You Know I Couldn’t Last

another morrissey album today. very contemporary and clean in sound compared to his focus on new-wave rock. this is a comeback record, the first album in 7 years. this firm little comeback album is honestly a bit of an underrated gem in morrissey's discography i wanna say. has a more modern sound but still sounds like the kind of music he normally writes... some stuff tugs at you a bit if you allow yourself to get immersed. it sounds like oasis sometimes.

hey its that guy who takes off his shirts in his concerts!

Love Morrissey. Not the best, but really good.

Y’Know, if you ignore whatever pretentious drivel Morrissey is singing about, this album can kinda slap. It’s got a nice thick texture to the sound and a sort of dark relentless energy throughout. I really enjoy the instrumentation throughout and I have to admit I really enjoy Morrissey’s vocals, there’s just something about them. “First of the Gang to Die” is the obvious stand out track but there’s a couple of other good tracks on here, namely; “I Have Forgiven Jesus” and “How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel” among others. I think it just about sneaks into 4 stars for me, but possibly only deserves 3.

First track: Fuck you America. Second track: Fuck you England. Third track: Fuck you Jesus. Four stars. I can't imagine what it must be like to spend 5 minutes talking to Morrissey - actually yes I can and what I am imagining. But I like the music and I'm at least entertained by gawking at his smug, pompous, self-unaware-scathing reports on everybody. Really like "First of the Gang to Die."

thought it was cringe at first but actually its not bad

a la primera cancion he notado que esta voz me sonaba demasiado, como que es el the smiths? q locura chat. Locura que de aquí salga la de monday, humilliation, nanana wuau. CANCIONES GUARDADAS: I'm Not Sorry The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores The First Of The Gang To Die Let Me Kiss You All The Lazy Dykes I Like You

Separate the art from the artist. That being said, I like The Smiths, and although I've never really dove into their work, nor Morrissey's, I do like this particular album quite a bit, it's good music. If you like The Smiths, definitely check this one out. 7.5 / 10

Great listen. Morrissey comes off as the biggest loser with a massive ego but he makes it work.

Fuck yes. I love Morrissey. America is not the world: 6/10 Gotta respect an American diss track. Irish blood, English heart: 7/10 Solid track, great love track too. I have forgiven Jesus: 8/10 Banging tune. “By Friday, life has killed me.” Come back to Camden: 7/10 Solid tune Im not sorry: 7/10 Me neither Morrissey. Nice melody. The world is full of crashing bores: 7/10 Some banger one liners in here. I reckon this would go off live. How can anybody possibly know how I feel?: Nice guitar. First of the gang to die: 8/10 Belter Let me kiss you: 7/10 Great guitar work. All the lazy dykes: 6.5/10 What a title. I like you: 7/10 You know I couldn’t last: 7.5/10 Holy heavy. Oops nevermind, spoke too soon. Holy doolie the heaviness is back.

Interesting

It started as a 3 but grew on me as it went on and cracked the 4

Mozza remains a sharp lyricist despite his unfortunate mutterings post-Smiths. This is a great collection of songs.

Very strong lyrics and tracks that flow from one to the next.

So this is the infamous Morrissey I keep hearing about huh? This was a good fuckin album. An easy 4-star to give.

very morrissey. lots of songs about being lonely and sad. some pretty fun and interesting stuff in there though!

I feel like I shouldn't like Morrissey's music, but I liked this one. The best one of his (including The Smiths) I've had here. His vocal performance is the best I've heard - despite his prominent whining - and the moody atmosphere this album generates is very good. The drumming and the production are great too.

Speak on it Morrissey, loved how direct and magical this was! Favourite track: I Have Forgiven Jesus

Its Morrisey he's great

The melodies are nice, interesting, and his voice fresh and sharp as usual. There are some interesting songs with more guitars than I expected from what I knew by The smiths. Nice listen. 3,5/5.

8.0/10 Really liked this one

One of the great voices of music. This is the best Morissey produced post smiths by a stretch there’s no bad songs on this album. Fantastic

“Do you hate me?” Sometimes! Funny to get my last Morrissey album on the list right after the last Sonic Youth album yesterday. Boxes ticked. (I think there’s still a massive slew of Smiths albums I’ve yet to get, but whatever. Bridges to cross.) I am loathe to admit that Morrissey’s solo music has grown on me as I’ve heard them. I think it’s helped that I got them in approximate release order; as they get closer to contemporary I find the songwriting and production stronger and more enjoyable to me. I like the chunkier guitar work on this one in particular. I don’t think I’m going to check out whatever the hell he’s putting out in 2026, but I’ve found some peace with what works for me about his music. “First of the Gang to Die” bangs.

I can see why people like this but Morrissey's voice isn't for me. I'd love to hear him on stage in a musical but in a rock/pop setting it's too earnest.

As a fan of Morrisey and The Smiths this all really worked for me. I had never heard any of these songs before, and while not as strong as his previous stuff in general, I still think this was a great album. Honestly, there is no one like Morrisey in terms of lyrics and taking an audience on a surprisingly musical journey. His mind is one of one. First couple songs are the weakest, but then it really picks up. A few standouts here I already will be adding to my rotation. Top Songs: I’m Not Sorry, First of the Gang to Die, Let Me Kiss You, The World is Full of Crashing Bores

Sad brit pop

7/10 Musically can be quite meh at times, but lyrically i find him always interesting

I have heard some Morrissey in the past but never fully got into it until now. I liked it a lot.

Enjoyed him as a solo act

Rock solid comeback for the Moz. But it didn't last too long.

0/15 bekannt 8/10 Beste Songs: I have forgiven Jesus, Irish blood english heart, the world is full of crashing bores

Ah, our dear morose lad from Manchester. What a prolific, wry writer and adroit vocalist. Although I perceive myself as a manic Smiths fan, I kind of let Moz fall out of contact and I hadn't listened to this record before. Well no better time than not any later. Very well produced, written, played, and joyful-miserated. It all sounds very fresh, especially, unfortunately, Morrissey's velvety crooning diatribes. Well at least we've had a black president in the US, so there's that...

Have I been beaten into submission, with another Morrissey album, or is this one better than the others? The 80’s sound twenty years late doesn’t hurt my opinion, and I found myself agreeing with the humorous sentiment. Good enough.

Fav tracks: America is not the world, Irish blood, English heart, I have forgiven Jesus, let me kiss you, you know I couldn’t last The king of melancholy and beautiful despair.

Steven Morrissey's vocals are operatic and the musical feel runs from power pop/rock in Irish Blood, English Heart to full on musical production crescendo big number in Come back to Camden. Overall you come away with the feeling that Steven is very clever and talented. However he cant seem to get over the fact that people aren't giving him the recognition that he so desperately wants for being clever and talented. If you dissociate the songs from this wail of tortured genius, it is a witty, funny and enjoyable album. Its just hard to do this. (3.750)

Really damn good lmao I think my fav morrissey to date some of the lyrics r so messed up but every song has an incredibly sticky melody

The songwriting on here I think is actually great. Too bad Morrissey is so annoying. This was the first Smiths member solo project I’ve heard and it was a pleasant surprise.

Yes, he's become problematic, but this is a good album. Mopey? Yes, but not as much as Vauxhall and more consistent than Maladjusted if memory serves. Dare I say this might feel the most Strangeways post Smiths. Ironically, I listened to this while picking up McDonald's for dinner and driving home from work where I stunk up a uniform.

I've never been a Morrissey fan, but gave this a fair shake. The songs are beautiful. His voice is gorgeous. The production is lush. Still, just not my jam.

olipa hauska levy. tykkään laulajan melodisuudesta ja melkein tangolaulajan ominaisuuksista

Hate to give morrissey a good score but the album is a banger

Gotta admit, surprised at the high quality here and for me it’s even a cut above much of The Smiths work

Ótimo álbum. Morrissey em grande fase. Celest x Versekeys Ultra-Sense Planet.

Day 138 Morrisseys strongest album in my opinion 8/10 Highlights Irish blood, English heart The world is full of crashing bores First of the gang to die

No complaints! Good stuff! A four-issey for the Morrissey.

Man, I dunno, I really like music like this. This was almost a 5 tbh. I get that he's a knob, but the songs are good.

I guess I like Morrissey, not as good as the other but p good Will I listen to again: 87%

I like Morrissey's lyrics even if I don't agree with them all (but do some!). At least he has something to say and you can hear it clearly. But also the music is good too. I'm surprised I liked this so much.

I had no idea there was so much Morrissey hate. The comments are hilarious. He was pretty smarmy and self righteous but I kind of thought it was funny. I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would.

Steven Morrissey is rightly, and predictably, indignant about a lot of things here, and he communicates this beautifully in some of these songs. It's very difficult to disagree with anything that he says as well, and after listening to albums full of artists struggles against drugs and personal demons, it's not a bad thing to hear someone railing against the intolerance and the lack of action of others. In an album highlight, I'm glad that he has forgiven Jesus's. I can imagine that a lot of gay people haven't. And there's a beautiful simplicity to I'm Not Sorry that makes it instantly memorable. A highly listenable 4 star album.

Crazy mix of interesting lyrics and the largest ego of all time. Instrumentally sticks out from what I’ve come to know him for at first but it comes around. A lot of really solid songs, my favorite is the one that I can’t repeat the name of but dude this man has such an ego and is so condescending it’s insane. Still good music.

Cool, great album, can’t deny it. God he sucks. See also: Van Morrison. Can we get a break from theses diva assholes for a while?

Enjoyed the music, good album, much better than I was expecting.

I liked every one of these songs, though a couple really stand out for me: I'm Not Sorry, How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel. Otherwise, every song rates 4 stars. A solid solid 4 star effort by Morrissey and crew.

Didn't think I liked Morrissey's voice but this was actually rather enjoyable.

Morrissey may be a difficult person, to put it at least a bit euphemistically. But he has a great voice and makes great music. You can hear that on this album. And although I liked it, I probably won't listen to it again anytime soon. Morrissey isn't really my cup of tea. 4/5

Yeah, USA. Cooles, stimmiges Album. 4/5

Awesome album

Alaway a great singer a d musician. Love his music this is a must hear not his best yetn amazing alum overall

The thinnest line between insufferable self-righteousness and excellence.

they can never make me hate you moz

This was a pretty decent album overall. It’s definitely different from what Morrissey did with The Smiths, but considering it came out much later, that’s not surprising. The album feels very much like a product of its time, fitting right into the pop rock and alternative rock sound of the late ’90s and early 2000s. It works well as a pop album, with a mix of calm, chill songs and a few tracks featuring subtle electronic beats and synths, adding extra texture and color. It’s cool to see that Morrissey managed to stay relevant, releasing a solid album and keeping his solo career moving forward.

A bit too direct sometimes, but some parts were a vibe

Was expecting something way worse. 4.3

Generally positive review. Slightly upbeat, decidely Brit.

America, where the president is never black, female or gay

Absolutely world-class piss-taking by one of the world's all-time great piss-takers. He's in fine form here and no way this should have been exed.

Very Y2K. First of the gang to die is a great song.

Never dug The Smiths, but Moz solo goes so well

Personal notes, I like it mellow

I don’t love the melodies and production but I think every song has 10/10 lyrics

13 year olds shouldn't listen to Morrissey. I shouldn't have been listening to Morrissey at 13, but a friend shared this record with me and I put it on my iPod. (it was probably on every iPod I had after that, if I could find it). But I really never could get into it. I don't know if it was the way that it was explained to me: "Its like 80s indie" , "its like post punk" , "its like Depeche Mode mixed with Death Cab for Cutie." I don't know, man. I tried freakin hard to like Morrissey and probably only left it in my collection because of the allusion that listening to Morrissey makes one seem cultured and interesting. But then I got older and I started to understand why people like Morrissey and that Morrissey is an important artist for indie and punk and post punk. I get it. And I have grown to enjoy his weird opera-esque cutesy voice. This record is fun. I kind of think his lyrics are not the best. They're a little too obvious. But I also get that at the time, it was important to write songs about this. This was post 9/11, height of the War of Terror. America was falling out of favor on the world stage and records like this (amongst others) made a difference. (American Idiot, War on Errorism, Rock Against Bush, The Last Sucker, etc) I had a good time with this today. It was a bit cathartic. Its fun to be able to come full circle with Morrissey. Respect the artistry, love certain songs (especially The Smiths) and also just respect that he is one weird dude who has written some weird ass songs. (all the lazy dykes?)

Morrissey has has a chokehold on my balls ever since I listened to all the Smiths albums 4 Star not Smith but Smith Adjacent

I overdosed on Smiths/Morrissey maybe 15 years ago, and I skipped some of the more recent albums. This was a great way to revisit his work and it doesn't disappoint. This definitely made its way into my rotation. Really digging the pop punk-ish track.

Oh Mozza you silly man. Such wasted talent tarnished by all that ukip fuckwittery, it's hard to be objective in the shadow of his racist nonsense but this was a good album

Just another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex I wasn't in the mood for another Morrissey album, I couldn't be arsed with the knobheadery. But was then later surprised how much this album resonated with me.

Unfortunately, a banger. I find Morrissey as insufferable as the next person. But this is quite a good album. It's in the signature Morrissey style of delivery and lyrics, with surprisingly nice instrumental backing. Every song has a keen and humourous line or two. "First of the Gang to Die", "I Have Forgiven Jesus", and "How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel" are stand-outs. This album does not reach the highs of any of the Smiths albums, but for what it's worth, this is pretty solid.

I only knew a few Smiths songs, haven't heard any solo stuff before this. I liked it.

The run from Irish Blood, English Heart to How Can Anybody Possibly Know Me makes sense as one of those reflective old guy albums. Keep America Is Not The World at the start as a funny opener, and First Of the Gang To Die as a banger at the end. Let Me Kiss You is a nice ironic love song, but the last three tracks are filler and leave the listener feeling he’s disappeared up his own arse. Listening to this a few times to work out what was wrong with it made me appreciate the middle section more. An older, ruminating Morrissey, seldom breaking out into the way a-heys of his past.

Such a unique sounding voice. Enjoyed listening to this if you don't listen too closely to the lyrics and ignore the personality of the man himself!

Really nice, one of his records I thoroughly enjoy.

An awful man makes an awful(ly) great album.

Very fun listen that has a really solid production quality and mixing that I very much enjoyed. Toes a nice line of both pop and rock that I found very fresh. Personally enjoyed the songs with social commentary more engaging, but an interesting album that isn't bogged down by a more mainstream sound. Top tracks: America Is Not the World, I'm Not Sorry, I Like You

Len Houmous once took a job in a quarry. He’d been on one of his famous acid trips ans decided he wanted to fully immerse himself in ‘rock’ 4.2 8/12 First Of The Gang To Die

Surprisingly pretty good

My first solo Morrissey Album on this list and a revival album at that, being made 7 years after Maladjusted. There are several degrees of separation here from what I am used to but Morrissey's lyricism still has the angst of a teenage social media user and the subtlety of a hydrogen bomb. He's really quite a twat but I think part of that endears me towards his music a little. For the music itself, Morrissey's voice has matured quite a bit in the near 2 decades between this album and his work with The Smiths and I reckon he sounds better here. The instrumentation feels right at place with the early 2000's in terms of pop rock which will date it to some but as someone who grew up around the time I quite enjoyed it and thought it complimented Morrissey quite well. I think a lack of truly standout songs is the only thing holding me back from giving this a 5. I loved 'The First of the Gang to Die' and think it may be one of my new favourites from Moz but there aren't enough tracks here that reach that height.

I know that album cover would have gone so hard in 2004 Morissey really was born in the wrong time, he would have killed it as political streamer. Off the rip this feels far worse produced than anything by the Smiths but as the album goes on it definitely grows on you. His voice is more mature here but less dynamic. Backloaded, All of the Lazy Dykes is a genuine masterpiece that feels like a David Bowie deep cut you hear on the radio but with a different vocalist. I like you is super charming as well. 7/10

After exhausting all of the Smiths albums, it is now time to work our way through Moz’s solo work which, for some inexplicable reason, outnumbers the Smiths albums in this book. Regardless, You Are The Quarry is his comeback album and did quite well in Terf Island, and for good reason. On my first listen, I thought it was strange to hear how Moz’s voice had changed between Strangeways and this. I also thought it was strange to hear his voice without jangle pop production. By the end of track two, this feeling goes away entirely. Moz proves that he’s his own artist, and is capable of making a captivating and compelling record. The lyrics are cringe but I love this shit, I really do. I am a massive crywank loser and I kill for music like this. He is still able to write lyrics truly like nobody else, for better or worse. I really expected this to just be a Smiths album without Marr’s guitar but I was very happy to hear that it’s its own thing. The album is consistently good with a few tracks that I looked forward to on each listen. I just don’t like it enough to give it the same score as the Queen Is Dead, though it’s a bit backloaded. Apart from that, it’s a phenomenal album. Highlights: I’m Not Sorry, First of the Gang to Die, Let Me Kiss You

Favorite Track: First of the Gang to Die

Love it

A fine example of what makes Moz both a brilliant musician and an insufferable prick.

Liked it - something different to my norm

I usually can't stand Morrisey but I really liked this one! It's a miracle!

Uno de mis discos favoritos de Morrisey, con el tema First of the gang to die...en mi top 3 de canciones favoritas de este señor

I enjoyed this, but im scared to look into the Morrissey hate...

I was able to separate the person from the music as i had never heard or read anything about him before... yes I live on the very outside edge of the earth. So without judgement I deemed this a very enjoyable album, actually. Great vocals, easy instrumentals. So there you go. Now what's the issue with this guy?

I quote like old even crankier morrisey.

oh yes, this guy is an idiot, but I listened to this record a lot. I still like it.

Liked it a lot

This is not bad, but the lyrics are pretty uninspired on the nose. I snorted during "America is Not the World" and people heard me 2 rows of cubicles away. It's an interesting blend of old and new. It's somehow very early 2000's and very 80's. Maybe it's mid-90's.

Der Typ ist komisch, seine Songtexte sind super cheesy, aber irgendwie find ichs trotzdem gut :D

Good Morrissey album

A great album overall. Morrissey has such an amazing voice that reminds me of The Smiths (edit I didn’t realise he was in the smiths) and he uses it perfectly. Had fun listening to this with every song offering something different. Some songs u enjoyed were I Have Forgiven Jesus and The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores. Now I do have to say it has not aged very well with the whole vibe of the project and do feel as if it could’ve been made in the 60s but a great album nonetheless. An 8.4/10 4.2/5

I've never heard any of his music so this was a nice experience. Great songwriting and pleasant melodies.

very route one lyrically buy the big man, but first of the gang to die is top tier stuff

Really enjoyed this album. Shame Morrissey seems to be such a dick.

Very funny album

ah, the sardonic and self deprecating crooner just being himself, and i am here for it. this one cooks. highlights: “america is not the world” “i have forgiven jesus” “how can anybody possibly know how i feel?”

Good One

This guy may be an asshole as many say but he makes undeniably good music. 4

It’s a good Morrissey record but it is not as good as the Smith. That’s why I give it 4 stars.

I like his music alot. Bit of a stuck up prick for the rest

Didn't mind this.

Morrissey is not a likable person, but he is no less talented. This album has some in your face songs from the start, but it is a good album.

Unexpectedly sweet, earnest, and tuneful, with thoughtful lyrics. Let Me Kiss You is one of the best, and the guitar there reminds me of that in My Favourite Game (as does the guitar in I Like You).

From what I hear, the guy is a major dickhead and the lyrics on this album do seem opinionated. That said, based on musical merit, this was a nice listen and I enjoyed it.

Veldig bra album. Ingen svake låter. Spennende melodier som tar uventede vendinger, samtidig som de pakkes inn i en letthet slik at det knapt merkes. Kan fort vokse til 5 stjerner ved flere gjennomlyttinger.

Very political but I enjoyed it

muy bueno! 4/5

Recognized the voice before realizing the connection!

I was prepared to not like this because every Smiths or Morissey album that has come up so far has been lukewarm at best. But I actually enjoyed it. There were only a handful of songs I didn't like and it veered into the type of Brit-Pop I enjoy, like Pulp or Blur.

Favoriten America is Not the world I have forgiven Jesus Im Not sorry First of the Gang to die The world is Full of crashing bores I like you

Sorry again for liking Morrissey.

Absolute prick but this album is very good, listened to the singles a lot on MTV2 back in the day. It's bit more rocky than his usual output but keeps the best bits of his classic sound. His warbly delivery doesn't always work but lands more often than it misses I'd say. This album is just really solid.

He's a miserable odious twat, is Moz, and I love it. Nobody else like him. It's Morrissey, if you like him you're probably going to like this, if you don't you probably won't! He's not really breaking any new ground here. But Irish blood, English heart and the first of the gang are both great tracks. I have forgiven Jesus is so Morrissey. The world is full of crashing bores too. So self depricating yet narcissistic. Brilliant 4.5

Either Morrissey is growing on me or this album is better than the others. I just enjoyed this a lot more than my usual outing with him. Pleasant experience on this Easter Day. 4/5

No subtlety on this one. Especially the first song. But overall sounded good, low 4.

Morrissey is a kinda fucked up weird dude but I do like his music

I have absolutely no reason to like Morrissey in any way, except possibly nostalgia for The Smiths, but for some reason I always enjoy his music. Sure, it's pretentious, but somehow he always manages to absolutely nail a feeling or observation.

God, he's so pathetic

A lot of snippets from "First of the Gang to Die" were staples of my time on LiveJournal. I still really like a lot of the ballad-y songs on here. It's not my favorite Morrissey album. Shame he's so annoying.

Massive prick, great album

Muy bueno

Oh Yoko!!

Gotta say, due to Morrissey's stigma of not being great, I wasn't expecting You Are The Quarry to be as good as it is but i was certainly wrong. When i saw that Morrissey had a solo career, i thought that these albums were going to more or less just be more Smiths albums but this one definitely feels very different from those by dropping the a majority of the new wave elements and going full indie rock. The music here is really well done with some great The Killers style melodies and even when the lyrics were dumb, they still managed to make me wonder what Morrissey would think of next and that always kept me interested. This is a really solid album that in my eyes, gets more hate than it deserves. Best Song: First of the Gang to Die Worst Song: The World Is Full of Crashing Bores Side note: I don't know why but the album and artist names being positioned the way they are kinda makes me laugh, it feels more like a statement than just the name and artist of this album

Actually enjoyed this one. Wasn’t sure what to think at the start, but it won me over toward the end.

9/10 Favorite Tracks: America Is Not the World, Let Me Kiss You, All the Lazy Dykes, I Like You

This guy a a massive twat but man can he.makes some wonderful music!

Ugh I love sad British men

I can like the music without loving the musician. Right?

It was raining hard when I listened to this album and it was appropriate. I enjoyed this album. Nothing really stood out to me.

This sounded better to me than some of the other Morrissey albums I’ve previously had. May be that this is from later in his career and his voice has matured a bit. I think the global reviews are a bit too low so I’m rating up to a 4, but think it should land around 3.4

This was quite nice.

I hate this man, but damn

This album was amazing, the cover, the tracks, their contents, absolutely awesome. This dude had some real stuff to talk about that first track on America holds true today as well. Favorite Tracks: America Is Not The World, Come Back to Camden, First Of The Gang To Die, and I Like You.

It is genuinely startling to hear such overtly political lyrics delivered so clearly. Musically, this could only have happened in 2004. Morrisey's British New Wave croon overtop these guitars and drums... this would never have sounded like this at any other point in time. And it's better for it. His voice is not obscured by layers of densely packed reverb; it's clear, and sounds more in-key because of it. But his performance still recalls the big Smiths songs, which brings a familiarity to anyone who may otherwise have been turned off by the shift in sound. After writing all of that, I looked at the album's Wikipedia page and saw that it was produced by Jerry Finn. Was there anybody better in the early 2000s??? It feels like everybody who ever worked with him made their best albums of their careers during their time with him. And indeed this was seen as a huge comeback album for Morrissey. And apparently another Morrissey album was the last album Jerry Finn worked on before he died? Guess I'm listening to that too.

I remembrer listening to this when it was released, but I don’t remember it being this good! The first mine tracks are well crafted and performed pop songs. However, the last three tracks let the quality dip a bit, so it’s not a stone cold classic

I didn't expect to see this album come up! I like Morrissey's lyrics - often oblique, often startling, sometimes straightforward - and I've liked his singing since The Smiths, but I find the music a bit anodyne.

Excellent.

"You Are The Quarry" is the seventh studio album by English singer-songwriter Morrissey. It was his first album in seven years following "Maladjusted." Alternative pop, pop rock and indie rock are the Wiki-listed genres. Fine. Jerry Finn was the producer. With Morrissey on vocals, other bandmembers included Alain Whyte (guitar, backing vocals, co-writer), Bob Boorer (guitar), Gary Day (bass), Dean Butterworth) and Roger Manning (keyboards). The album was commercially a huge success hitting #2 in the UK and #11 in the US. An electronic drum beat, synth and acoustic guitar open "America Is Not The World." The music goes softer. This has a very clean sound. Moz loves the US but they need to stay out of everyone's business. He stays political in "Irish Blood, English Heart." This is a little harder with a charging guitar and drums sounding like a typewriter. The band kicks in and the music gets even harder. Moz was the son of Irish immigrants and grew up in English and he sings about the contention between the two countries. The music slows down and adds strings in "I Have Forgiven Jesus." He grew up Catholic but his religion commitment has lapsed. Acoustic guitar overlayed with an electric guitar and synth melody highlight "First of the Gang to Die." This is very poppy. Some more strings. The song is about gang member, Hector, and is a tribute to his Hispanic fans, particularly in LA. The album closes with "You Know I Couldn't Last." A harder edge guitar intro which goes slower and then back hard again. Moz sings about the ills of becoming a famous musician. Maybe, my favorite song on the album. I've come to the acceptance that every single Morrissey album is in this challenge. This is pretty good though, probably top three from what I've heard. The music and vocals are very clean and clear sounding. Moz's lyrics are varied as usual covering personal issues (religion, love, heartbreak), the US, Ireland, England, suburbia, gangs and the music business. The band is tight and the music styles include pop, hard rock, ballads, slow rock and even baroque for a bit. It's melodic yet there's an air of desolation that pervades. This is a solid Morrissey album.

Morrissey is a paradox. He's simultaneously old fashioned and modern. He's cheesy and edgy. Safe and daring. I know there are albums of his that I think are a little better than this one, but it exemplifies why he's reached this level. One of the most unique and specific lyric styles of anyone in his realm. I do think the album is a little bloated, but still great nonetheless.

A very broken guy who can both produce deeply felt, wonderfully written songs, and somehow also lack basic human empathy towards less privileged people. I can't hate him + this album brings me so many bittersweet memories + "The first of the gang to die" is a banger = 4/5

better than expected

Morrissey is an ass, but I really liked this album

funsies, funny way of writing lyrics, very different than what I'm used to.

cant decide if the lyrics are good or cringey hut they were definitely entertaining. i really enjoyed all the songs

good songwriter

- Zweitbestes Morrissey Solo Album - Ein ganz wunderbares Indie-Rock/Pop Album - Wiedermal gewohnt bissige und sarkastische Lyrics (An ein zwei Stellen auch ein bisschen platt z.B. "America Is Not The World"), egal ob sozialpolitisch oder persönlich. Rating: 4,25/5

This album reads like an unapologetic continuation of the Smiths' sound, and I honestly really like it (or most of it, anyway). Morrissey's grandiose British bellow is on full display here. It adds this quirkiness and energy to the music that few others can match. The drumming is also pretty strong here. The lyrics are goofy, and it's hard to tell whether that's intentional. It makes for a more entertaining listening experience, if nothing else. If you're giving a review to someone on the basis of them being a bad person - or, in Morrissey's case, blatantly opinionated - then you'd darn better give 1-star reviews to all the pre-2000s rock artists on this list. (Which is the majority of the list.) Because those people invariably suck at least as much as Morrissey, and some of them have done horrible things that Morrissey couldn't hold a candle to. My rating is partially to make up for the abundance of low reviews with silly reasoning behind them. Sure, maybe the guy's insufferable, but the music doesn't have to be. 4/5 Key tracks: Irish Blood English Heart, I Like You, First of the Gang to Die

I’m at a 3.5 that will get bumped up to a very begrudging 4. I simply don’t have a link to Morrissey’s stuff in a more personal sense to feel like the art is inseparable from the artist here like it is for other problematic performers (looking at you, Mr. West) – I know the guy’s kind of a shithead (I’m being very generous with “kind of”), and I’ve got to reckon with that, but I think I can live with it, for one reason or another. I’ll say this; because I know he is who he is, I paid a whole lot of attention to the lyrics on this album, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I think I like Morrissey when he’s not fucking complaining. The best tracks on this album are the ones that avoid overt bitching about society or ones that avoid when he goes “woe is me” and gets all self-referential and whiny. When he's fucking complaining, I despise the man, but at least he complains to some good instrumentals. There are 6 tracks I really liked on a first pass; “Irish Blood, English Heart”, “I Have Forgiven Jesus”, “Come Back to Camden”, “First of the Gang to Die”, “Let Me Kiss You”, & “All the Lazy Dykes”. That last one is probably the most controversial pick up there (especially with that title), but I think it’s a genuinely progressive track for the time, even with the chance that it’s just Morrissey trying to court controversy of some kind. He still performs it, so he has to believe in its message to some degree. The other 6 tracks are at least technically sound, and none of them are necessarily bad, they’re just either not super engaging or lyrically rather annoying. There are times where I thought another singer or band (namely Oasis, who he really tries to ape at certain points on this album) would’ve killed it on some of the more average tracks. It’s never in the soundscape, even if most of the tracks rarely feel like they’re from 2004. They all sound good, but instrumentally, this really feels like it’s jumping around from the late 80s to the late 90s to me, in a way that’s noticeable, but passable. Ultimately, I did like the album, and I like it enough to bump it up to a 4, begrudgingly. It trims the awkwardness of Viva Hate down, has much more concise songwriting and energy in the tracks, and when he’s not bitching and moaning, this album really works for me. Of course, he moans and bitches a lot, but at least he’s moaning and bitching in a better way than he did on Viva Hate. I could (and probably will) come to regret the 4, but for now, it just feels kinda right. At the very least, I think it’s no less than 3 (or a 2 if you REALLY fucking hate this guy, which is fair).

Me getting this before any of the Smiths records is a good thing because now I can get my complicated thoughts about them out of the way: I PREFER MOZ SOLO. I'm disappointed it wasn't Vauxhall and I, though that is also on the list, but generally speaking I adore Moz's voice. He's the part of the group that really made the Smiths work for me and I'd gladly hear him glide over waiting room Britpop for the rest of his career. Something about Morrissey's smug Brit posturing becomes really endearing over time and I'm not sure if there's a proper comparison I can make. Matty Healy is a similar brand of douche and I love his music but you rarely understand why he is the way he is from listening to a 1975 song. With Moz what you hear is what you get, and for some odd reason I like that quality. He did seem to lack a filter when naming track 10 but that's neither here nor there; even at its most theatric and unapproachable, this thing works for me.

Surprisingly entertaining.

морриси сольно какой то не такой, как в смитах. просто и с кайфом.

Morrissey sounds like an insufferable human being, to such a ridiculous extent that I sort of respect him in a way that transcends understanding. I think this album is superior to any The Smiths outing, so I can definitely say he's at least a good artist with confidence.

Not my favorite but I still love it!

I enjoyed this. The opening track, \"America Is Not The World\" is very apt for today, the 6th of November 2024. I Have Forgiven Jesus is great! I love the mood of the album in general. 4 stars for that.

I like a lot of The Smiths/Morrissey but this was surprisingly enjoyable, because of amazing production from Jerry Finn of Blink-182. Really updated Morrissey's sound for the 00s and gave the songs a great boost.

We both unexpectedly really enjoyed this. It's basically '80s Smiths vocals and verses with late-'90s pop-punk choruses.

I divorced my opinions on the man from his music on this album.

I found this one kinda hard to rate, nowadays I would rate it as my second favourite morrisey album below Vauxhall and I but for some stupid reason I gave that a 3 and your arsenal a 4 (and really Vauxhall should be a 5 and your arsenal a 4) Anyway that’s besides the point a bit as it had some of my absolute favourite morrisey songs on here such as Irish blood English heart, first in the gang to die and I like you but then there’s some forgettable fodder like all the lazy dykes. I think it’s a 4/5 it’s got some really high high’s just a bit of filler to cut.

I enjoyed You Are the Quarry. Multiple great tracks, including 3 in a row at the beginning of the album. I also like "The World Is Full of Crashing Bores" and "First of the Gang to Die." At times it's kind of darkly humorous ("It brought you the hamburger / Well, America, you know where / You can shove your hamburger") which is enhanced by Morrissey's vocal delivery. There's a weird time-displaced quality to the album too; it doesn't feel like an album from 2004.

It's a shame Morrissey is a nob because this was a pretty decent listen.

Megabra pop. Fantastisk röst. Alltid älskat Morrissey.

Alltid varit svag för Morrissey även om han tyvärr är rätt dum i huvudet. Flera riktigt bra låtar på denna.

In retrospect, this complicated and complex bit of 2000s maximalism ended up being Morrissey's last stand as an artist worth listening to - in both senses of the phrase. The songs here are brimming with life, but it wouldn't belong before his career, and his personality, underwent a rapid putrefaction that persists to this day.

I like this guy's vibe. Very melodramatic. Like the heavy use of minor notes and dissonance

If we can seperate the artist from the music for a minute, this is a very competent pop/rock album. While there are no real standouts, every song is at least "fine", and the album flows nicely and is an easy listen. I, for one, enjoyed it. 3.5/5

Surprisingly good!

Love this mopey bastards

Pretty good.

I love everything by him. Such a sweet voice.

Ok, Morrissey is an arsehole. And some of the lyrics on this are so risible they made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion; I'm not sure the humor was intentional. But you know what? I enjoyed the album, quite a lot. Going to separate the art from the artist and give this a four.

it's a shame about who morrissey is as a person because this unfortunately kind of slapped.

four stars because this album was hilarious. i don't know if that was the intent, but morrissey has bestowed upon us plebeians an excellent comedy album from on high. and how could it be anything else, considering the sheer earnestness with which he bemoans anyone and everyone he can focus his tommy gun sights on? from the opening track, "america is not the world," you already know what kind of album this is going to be. he then goes on to complain about anyone who isn't literally exactly him, including the labour party (?) and lesbians (???) sorry we're all such crashing bores, morrissey, and we are forever grateful that you deigned to write these songs for our boorish ears to listen to and our feeble minds to attempt to comprehend! we also have here some of the most morrissey song titles to ever exist. "i have forgiven jesus," "i'm not sorry," "the world is full of crashing bores," and "how can anybody possibly know how i feel?" really put things into perspective. astronomers, forget the heliocentric model of our solar system - we've gone full morrissentric now. despite the myriad issues with this album, some of these tracks admittedly slap. irish blood, english heart and the first of the gang to die go particularly hard. favorites: those two and i have forgiven jesus

Bit whiny in places but that's a bit like complaining that the sun is hot. The music was way better than I expected.

it's alright, interesting listen. 7/10

8.5/10

It’s ok Morrissey, America hates you too! Good album though

This is an overall good album. A lot of the songs are quite catchy and approachable. A number of tracks do tend to descend into generic Morrissey warblings, but thankfully it's not too many. First of the Gang to Die is a tune! 3.5 rounded up.

I do love/own this album. But not sure it's one I'd put as his best (Vauxhall and I - IMHO). 'America is not the world' already has outdated lyrics (America has had a black president now and looks likely to get it's first female black president, hopefully) although the sentiment is still the same, also a shame he turned out to be a proper douche. The world is full of crashing bores 'and I must be one' is sadly now correct. Politics aside, it's a solid album. 4 stars.

Really like this new-to-me album!

As an American, not aware of any of this guy's controversies, I thought it was a pretty great album, so I'll judge it for that.

A very nice album by the (not so nice) Morrissey. I really like Irish Blood, English Heart (music & lyrics).

Just went down a lunchtime rabbithole reading about Mexican Americans love of Morrissey. Album was better than expected. First of the gang was the standout

Good stuff. I remember hearing Irish Blood… when it first came out and really enjoying it as it was quite different lyrically and stylistically from the rest of 2003/4 but never investigated further, wish I had. It’s a lot more accessible than I’d have thought too, I can imagine he’s been approached by people to cover stuff here and because hes Morrissey just telling them to do one or just not replying.

Для 2004 года необычно, крутой голос и звук

I think I’ve said this for most Smiths and Morrissey albums, but I really don’t want to like his music because of what an absolute bellend he is. However, for the most part, I have found his music to be annoyingly good. This album didn’t grab my attention quite as much as some others (aside from First Of The Gang To Die which is such a damn good song), but there frustratingly still isn’t a bad song here. I hated his voice when I first heard him, but I’m also annoyed to say that this has grown on me. I still find some of his lyrics to be a bit too “woe is me, everybody look at how sad I am” but overall, this is a good album.

Although he’s a huge prick, I really enjoy it 😅

Holy shit. I was not expecting anything crazy in a 2004 solo album by Morissey. Little did I know, the reviews are all slop because people don’t like the guy personally. This album is a banger. This comes off the heels of 6 year hiatus after his career was basically said and done. It’s basically Smiths with a modern sound. I think the more modern production helps break up the same ish sounds you hear through the Smiths albums, and gives just enough of a poppyfreshness to truly feel like a rejuvenating moment in his career.

I recently had to confess to my friend – who is a huge fan of The Smiths – that, despite my general superiority complex around the band given how frequency I mock people who are stereotypical fans of The Smiths, I actually really, really like them as a band. This made her gasp, smack me, and then yell at me at the lesbian bar for refusing to go see Morrissey with her earlier that year, despite the fact that she had just broken up with her boyfriend at the time, who was supposed to go with her. No no no, I insisted, I like The Smiths; Morrissey is still both pretty gross (albeit complicated) and deeply obnoxious (and doesn’t complicate that truth ever; in fact, he makes it apparent the minute he opens his mouth). Johnny Marr and Co., though, those boys are all right with me, but only those boys. I did leave out one crucial detail. I had never listened to a Morrissey solo album. Now having listened to You Are The Quarry, while I do still find him to be both pretty gross and deeply obnoxious, and would still say this album is sometimes too much of one, the other, or a third worse sin – the sin of being saccharine as hell – I now think I have to find a way to tell my friend that maybe, just maybe, I actually like Morrissey. At least as a musician, and at least on this album, which is pretty damn good.

The Smiths. Just wanted to get that out of the way cause it's on my mind. How can it not be. So onto the album at hand...as good an album that a solo Morrissey has produced. Well produced. His usual lyrical flair aimed familiar targets. Overall a great listen - the best moments rising to the level of the aforementioned but now unnamed band...

I really want to hate Morissey's music, but dangit this is a solid record. 'America Is Not The World' is a great opener and 'First of the Gang to Die' is a banger.
