Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Ottamatta kantaa herraan itseensä, niin kyllähän Morrissey musiikkia osaa tehdä. Hyvä levy, ei kuitenkaan mikään tajunnanräjäyttävä. 3,5/4.
Haven’t we only had 2 Smiths albums so far? Let’s get ST in here before a third Morrissey album. This was perfectly fine but not different enough to warrant a spot. High 3.
Really don't like him and this doesn't change my opinion. In fairness this was listenable.
The music was fine, he and his lyrics are insufferable. My God.
3/5
I enjoy The Smiths enough but have never been inclined to delve into Morrissey’s solo catelog. There is some clever enough songwriting here but just felt a bit flat musically. Also, this is awful album art, just brutal. Mentioned to a buddy that without Johnny Marr, I just can’t get into Morrissey and his response was, “Without Marr, it’s just more assey” 3 stars
Okay, I have some pre-conceptions before I listen to this. Never really liked him, or his music but will be the first time I’ve done a full album. Let’s see… Quite the opener about America and quite laughable lyrics. Actually quite like the clean vocals, clear lyrics and steady gait. ‘I have forgiven Jesus’ a title that captures his self-importance perfectly! The backing tracks can sound like cheap karaoke at times. Gets a little repetitive and feels like separate, self-righteous mediocre poems set to music. But I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would.
Quite dull. There is simply too much morrissey on the list
I admittedly dreaded after seeing that Morrissey, on his own, had four records on this list, in addition to the three allotted for the Smiths. As I established in my review of Meat is Murder and The Queen is Dead, Morrissey had been the biggest hurdle for me getting into the Smiths because he's that much of a dick. As one could imagine, I was even less enthused about going into his solo output. Still, I can now say that I enjoyed The Queen is Dead, and I wanted to go into this album with an open mind. So, what did I get with Morrissey, You Are the Quarry? Well, instrumentally, this is a pleasant-sounding record. It's a nice blend of early 2000s alternative and pop rock, with Morrissey's baritone delivery nestled in front of Alain Whyte's elegant guitar play, a decent rhythm section, and some lush string arrangements. It's not the most commanding instrumental performance coming off the two Smiths albums I heard prior, but it does make for an enjoyable listen. What isn't as enjoyable, unfortunately, are the lyrics. For better and worse, You Are the Quarry is an album largely about Morrissey's own drama, from his trademark self-deprecation to very on-the-nose critiques. Look, I get it - he doesn't like the British tabloids, he doesn't like his former Smiths bandmates, he doesn't like people who eat meat, he doesn't like authority, he didn't like his Catholic upbringing, he doesn't like his home in Camden, London, he certainly doesn't like what England and America had become at the turn of the century, and most tellingly, he doesn't like himself and questions whether anyone is truly capable of loving him. While that frustration can be channeled into some intriguing storytelling, such as the tribute to his Hispanic fanbase on "First of the Gang to Die", the cultural divide in his heritages on "Irish Blood, English Heart", and the imagery of being deserted by Jesus as he struggled with his faith on "I Forgive You Jesus", almost half of this album's content is very specific to Morrissey to the point where I had trouble finding pathos or relatability. Tracks like "This World is Full of Crashing Bores" and "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?" reeked of high-brow observations from Morrissey on others, whereas his refuge amongst the lesbians in "All the Lazy Dykes" gets rather creepy as he asks them to touch and squeeze him. So much of this album depends on how much one cares about Morrissey's tea, and that's hard for me to swallow; again, this man is the reason I had a hard time getting into the Smiths. I just can't find myself coming back to You Are the Quarry much. There are a few songs to cherry-pick from, but that's the best I can do. I certainly don't look forward to the other Morrissey solo records.
Kind of one note. Not a bad note, just mundane and dark. Great song writer - if you like this stuff.
Still up his arse but with glimpses of daylight.
Don’t love morrisey
Not ever been a fan of The Smiths or Misery, so I’d never heard this album before. I’ve got to say I thought it was a pretty good album
It's funny how much expectations play into your perception of something. Hyped out of your mind for the latest installment of your favorite TV show? It's bound to disappoint. Get a decent and cheap meal at random restaurant you had no other choice but to stop at on a road trip? Impressive. I was 100% sure I would loathe this album. Not only did I think Morrissey is an insufferable twat (I mean, he is, but that doesn't mean his music is insufferable...I love Kanye's early stuff for example), but also I was assigned The Smith's The Queen is Dead, which is widely considered their best work and ends up on most greatest albums of all time list and called it "the most overrated album of all time." Needless to say, my expectations were beyond low. So naturally, when I kind of liked some of the songs, I was pretty impressed. When I found that I enjoyed most of the songs minus Morrissey's holier-than-thou lyrics, it was easy to rank this album outside of the gutter. So, yeah, it's a solid "mid tier" album for me, which makes it quite honestly a strong entry on this list.
Reminds me of dad
No idea how this makes the list some genuinely good tracks but not exceptional
This is the second worst thing to happen to me in 2004. Morrissey seemed to have lost quite a bit of the whiney suckcock voice he was known for when he sang with The Smiths. Unfortunately, he seems to have become more insufferable as the time went on - with genuinely some of the worst lyricism I have ever heard in an album ever. Seriously, if I heard this as a non-English speaker, it would have been a lot better. But unfortunately I had to hear this cunt speak about the state of the world and how he's "not sorry for anything he's done" whilst one song previous crying about how he's all alone. Putting my hate for this horrible cunt aside, this honestly wasn't that bad. If you put blank out his shitty lyrics then this actually goes alright. I got tired of his annoying ass voice as things dragged on, especially once I got to Let Me Kiss You. This album is tolerable at best, but I've heard worse things that this guy has touched.
Crooner-ey pop
Rather self indulgement
it's alright. he has such a specific sound, but it does all start to sound the same after a while.
Melodies are boring and the lyrics are like a high school boy's diary.
Not a massive fan of Morrissey, but this is pretty good 3/5
Some of it is a bit teensge angst/politics from a middle aged man, but overall enjoyed - hard not to compare to the Smiths which are different level
I’d forgotten what a good album this is. Thought I had physical copy in my collection so getting this today prompted a search for it. Looks like it was victim of my foolish CD sale when I thought streaming was the way forward. So marked this album down to purchase again. Some good song melodies to enjoy and Morrisey is his usual miserable self communicating his usual utterances on a whole host of subjects. I can take or leave his views on these things but what matters is that the music is good. It escaped my notice but yesterday I was served up my 600th album. Chic didn’t exactly light up that auspicious occasion but up until then my average score was up to 2.62 from 2.58 when I had my 500th. So this last 100 must have been on the whole quite good. 3/5 25/8/25 Albums Rated 600 Average Rating 2.62 Favorite Decade 1960 Favorite Origin UK Favorite Genres Folk Psychedelic Rock Singer Songwriter Worst Genres Hip Hop Funk Soul Favorite Artists Beatles Radiohead The Who Simon & Garfunkel Bob Dylan Queen The Byrds Joni Mitchell U2 Deep Purple Coldplay Nick Drake Kate Bush Pink Floyd Fairport Convention Emerson, Lake & Palmer Peter Gabriel Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath Worst Artists Public Enemy Sonic Youth Adele Common Beastie Boys Elvis Presley My Bloody Valentine Sly & The Family Stone Can Ryan Adams The Band A Tribe Called Quest The Jesus And Mary Chain Isaac Hayes Christina Aguilera Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band Talking Heads Pixies Controversial Artists Marvin Gaye Neil Young David Bowie
Moyen
I rolled my eyes pretty hard at the start of this album because I was generally over this style, but I think he won me over on the back half of the album
Somehow this one didn’t bother me as much as the others
Like his voice, 1-2 good songs, the others are not bad but won’t add to playlist
I know Morrissey. a little too emo for me. go figure. but Morrissey or the Smiths was the beginning of Emo. at least imo. I was not a huge The Smiths or Morrissey fan but respect what they do. Truly never heard this album. I respect it just not for me
First, this has been the most likeable Morrissey/Smyths album so far. Still not that big of a fan, but it beats the others. Which, brings me to pretty much my only complaint about this site. This is the 7th Morrissey/Smyths album I've been served. With only 73 albums left, I hope this is my last. There have only been 7 Zepp and Floyd albums combined so far. No Cake. No Josh Ritter. No Neil Diamond so far. Certainly any one of those would be more important to share than a 7th Morrissey album.
"I'm Not Sorry" We know, Morrissey A bananabunch of rock songs, not super memorable but something about them has a sort of satisfaction that feels like it's more than expected to me, I liked listening to the music Not the worst as far as 21st century solo albums from frontmen of iconic '80s bands go
mjoah, ganz ok. Klang manchmal etwas weinerlich
Teilweise cringy und pseudointellektuell, teilweise aber auch gut.
I wanted to steer clear in this of the way Morrissey has decided to act in the past decade as I don’t want that to affect my judgement. But it is quite tricky. ‘Irish Blood, English Heart’ was once an ode about the nuances of dual-nationality but now feels jingoistic. There’s defo some bangers on here (First of the Gang to Die is a Top 10 Morrissey solo song of all time) but the navel-gazing that was so loved back in the day feels so petulant to me in light of his views in the last few years. Not my favourite of his albums, but good.
Musically, this is fine. But the book reveals its British origins with its excess of solo Morrissey.
Hector was the first ear worm to stick in my head all Saturday
Middling Morrissey. He'd hate that.
The 2 big singles are good. There are also a couple of interesting/unexpected instrumental choices. Other than that, I was slightly uninspired.
6/10 Works quite well as a self-parody album. Highlights: I Have Forgiven Jesus First of the Gang to Die
Morrissey’s strong vocals and songwriting were hallmarks of the Smiths, and they carry through into this project. The playing is suited for the purposes of this album: good yet unlikely to draw attention away from Morrissey (with the possible exception of I Like You). The album is perfectly listenable front-to-back but begins to get a bit stale towards the end. It doesn’t say as much as urgently as his work in the Smiths.
That's not my taste in music - But some pleasant songs
morissey makes it reeallllllyy hard to separate the art from the obnoxious, racist, english nationalist artist because he puts so much of himself into his lyrics. the first three songs on this feel like parodies of morissey songs, and are kind of unforgivably unsubtle and stupid. unfortunately!! i do kind of love this shit... i'm such a hoe for the smiths :( First of the Gang to Die is a classic, and I love this dumbass's stupid, corny music!!! it all does unfortunately sound great!! morissey shut the fuck up, i hate ur irish blood, english heart brexit loving ass!!!!!!!
What is happening to me
very curious... somehow both good and bad at the same time... something im now calling bood. this album was bood.
At times, this felt like the Smiths. Others, like Morrissey.
Not sure what to expect, not being a fan of Morrissey. First track was interesting but then it just became standard, cliche and not interesting. The production was good (hence the 3 stars) and some of the lyrics kept my interest for a bit but I wasn't a fan of the album.
His voice is so unique. Not my favorite set of songs.
Okay.
this album has aged lmao musically kinda okay classic moody boy britfolkpop but i never need to hear these songs again i fear fave: First of the Gang to Die least fave: I Have Forgiven Jesus
Favorite Track: You Know I Couldn't Last
For many, including me obviously, a comparison with the Smiths is unavoidable, so let's get that out of the way. I was a major Smith's fan back in the day, my daughter independently discovered them in her teens, and I revisit their discography periodically. This is not Smith's album, but "You are the Quarry" is all Morrissey, sometimes this is enough, sometimes not so much. Morrissey's--the crooner of angst, self-doubt and grief--lyrically delivers. Surprising nobody, his singing is beautiful and absorbing. I wouldn't go so far to say that he is at his best here, but his singing delivers more emotional intensity that we have seen in his solo work for a while. Lyrically, many songs on this record provide the listener with the angsty poems that are a consistent part of Morrissey's work, not to mention the soundscape of my youth. Sometimes the lyrics deliver emotionally, sometimes not, but they are almost always well-written, even profound at moments. Some complain that Morrissey can be self-indulgent, which can be true at times, but I’m okay with it. In fact, I’ve come to expect it. It is part of the standard Morrissey package. Musically, there is a formula to much of Morrissey's solo work that makes much of his work sound similar, with beats that were everywhere in the late 80s and 90s. We get more of that formula here, overall nothing particularly groundbreaking with the instrumentation. To be fair, Morrissey tries to break this mold on particularly the center tracks of the album, exploring with different music styles, while still holding seeming familiar, but honestly this is where it just didn't work for me. These tracks were not all bad, but some the instrumentation on others was downright shitty. What made the Smith's great was that Morrisey's poetic lyrics were backed by a really solid rock band. Part of it may be the extremely produced nature of this record, but the band on this album just doesn't deliver the intensity or musical interest of the past. Perhaps the comparison is not fair, but the uninteresting music backing Morrissey's singing is what keeps this from being a great record. The more traditional instrumentation on other tracks did generate several bangers that ultimately makes “You are the Quarry” a good, if not great, record. This includes singles like "Irish Blood, My Heart" and my favorite song on the record, “First of the Gang to Die.” Morrissey remains a legend who has influenced many great artists who came afterward. Even if this is not his best work, the album certainly belongs on the list because it helps highlight the length and breadth of an incredible artist.
This is overly earnest, even for Morrissey.
Zadnji probavljivi moz, tad mi je bio bolji nego sad.
The Smiths are one of my favorite bands and I have never owned a Morrissey album. My love for the Smiths and ambivalence towards Morrissey’s solo career is the biggest band/post band solo career difference I can think of in terms of my enjoyment. The Smiths hit my ears just right. Morrissey’s songs do that for moments during his songs and I perk up and think I’m in for a good time but it never lasts for the whole four-odd minutes of his song, much less for a whole album. You Are the Quarry was no exception.
Wherein the most arrogant man who has ever lived complains about what a burden it is to be so self deprecating.
Good early 2000's alternative album.
Ok
This album was ok, i liked some of the songs and the instrumentals were decent.
I've lost count of the number of Morrissey/The Smiths albums I've reviewed on this list, so it's hard to remember how I ranked them. With that being said, You Are The Quarry is a listenable record and despite the lyrical content and my personal dislike for him, it was even enjoyable at times. I can't say this will make any of my playlists, so no worries I'll become a fan.
Silly old racist. Half decent album. mind. Mozza has a thing about blokes in uniform - yet he wears a suit on the front cover. The sausage. The First of the Gang is bloody great. His last album worth taking an interest in.
I don't like giving 3s but Morrissey is the quintessential 3
Good album. Could be a 4.
The music or the man…. Let’s just go purely on the music….
The more I listen to Morrissey, the more I realize what an insufferable crashing bore he is. From a musical perspective some of the tracks are somewhat interesting, though.
I am a fan of The Smiths but I've never really listened to Morrissey albums before. This was fine, and I enjoyed the famous songs on here that I already knew but I feel Johnny Marr is a big factor in why I liked The Smiths.
The more people on the internet cry about how much they hate Morrissey, the more I like him
Very typical Morrisey. I'm now at album 4? or 5? of Morrissey/The Smiths and I am tired. He's always complaining about everything in the same way on and on and on. I was quite positive about the other albums but I'm ready to move on. Rating: 3
It was silly but as far as Morrissey goes, it was pretty good.
Very catchy and poppy, with that unique Morrissey wit. Interesting guitar riffs and groovy bass lines. Use of synth is cool. Diverse record of ballads and rocky pop tracks. 3.5
Not my favorite Morrissey album. It dragged, and there were no songs I especially enjoyed. The whininess got to me more than it usually does. 3
382/1001
I don’t know, I find Morrissey a little annoying but this album also sounds really good at times. I don’t know.
Right off the bat, Morrissey takes on American politics, British identity, and Jesus. Tho he's never one to shy away from big topics, having battled the Queen and railed against eating meat since the very beginning, he had always done so w/ wit and descriptiveness. But besides the excellent 'First of the Gang to Die,' and the agonizing 'Let Me Kiss You,' this record is too vague, too lugubrious: 'Here you'll find, despair and I / Calling to you with what's left of my heart.' Morrissey, despite popular belief, doesn't feel all that bad for himself, but here he's aimlessly self-involved: 'This world, I am afraid / Is designed for crashing bores / I'm not one.' Part of me wants him to get to the point, the other less pronounced: it's overcooked; half-baked.
Meh, Morrissey again...
Kinda mid
Still too new-wavey for my personal tastes, but I enjoyed this much more than expected. 3.2
Nothing I can really say about this album other than it's okay and listenable. I personally think some tracks are alright, such as "I'm Not Sorry", but I don't think I'll find myself coming back to this, however. Just not my thing, and music taste is subjective. Doesn't mean this album is terrible. 3.25/5
I do like Morrissey. He's pretty poetic and doing his own thing and is a bit of a dweeb but he cares and it shows. Interesting album. Didn't change my life and the first song feels like a roast but it's worth a listen.
A strong lyricist, and good at using his voice as an instrument. The instrumentation on this one just wasn't doing anything. It was fine, but forgettable. There is a lot of Morrissey content on the list, probably could have skipped this one.
There are a good few excellent tracks on this where he's being vulnerable, his voice is beautiful and the lyrics are strong. Some good album tracks. Then a few where the lyrics come across as angry teenage attempts at profound political insight. Overall the tracks that already know well I enjoyed but I wouldn't rush to listen to the whole album again.
Whilst the opening track is not great (self aggrandising rant) and tracks 6 & 7 also have similar “old man shouts at cloud” vibes. Overall there are more hits than misses on this album, and the singles are great. As always great vocals. Strong 3
Bad start with America..., unnecessarily abusive. Irish Blood... is a good song, again love/hate, but that's fine when you talking about your own country. Then there's the unfair world, self-loathing tracks. First in the gang... is a stand out track. Overall sounds great if not quite the Smiths.
There is always a tension in Morrissey’s music between his ability to write great pop songs and his narcissistic personality. At his best the latter enhances the former. The World is Full of Crashing Bores (a great pop song) acts as a breakdown of Morrissey’s personality. He sees himself as a victim who is much more interesting than others around him, yet he is also insecure and just wants to be loved by others. He is a self obsessed, vulnerable reactionary with a unique voice and a natural ability to playfully write about his feelings of isolation, and how difficult he finds the world. The way he writes resonates with me despite (or maybe because of) his flawed way of processing the world. He goes further on How Can Anybody Know How I Feel. He hates himself, but not nearly as much as he hates everyone else. It’s fascinating, for as long as the music is good. On later albums we can be less forgiving. I have a less complicated relationship with The First of the Gang To Die, a cathartic anthem with a big heart which just cuts straight through every level. The effortless, bright guitar chords match beautifully with his melancholy. Morrissey fans have been peeking through their figures watching him slowly come out as a racist over the course of four decades, culminating in him proudly declaring himself in alignment with the English Defence League in 2018. The whole “judging the art, not the artist” conversation seems specifically designed for his fans. It unfortunately puts Irish Blood, English Heart in an unpleasant light. He yearns for people to see the good in England, take pride in its accomplishments and rejects the idea that flag waving is racist. But then it's difficult to get swept up in his yearning, given that he is a racist. It's a well written, passionate burst of energy with a compromised message. A perfect encapsulation of Morrissey.
A very high 3 somewhat affected by his repugnance.
Even if you don't like Morrissey this album is one of those ones that just grows on you and get better with each listen
Sterk 3’er, 4-5 meget bra sanger.
cringe lyrics, musikalisch ganz ok
Dope album. I'm not sure there was a standout, but the whole thing was moody dreamy vibes that I could crank at any point. I've always avoided Morrissey because of how terrible his concert stories are, but now at least I understand why people so disappointed, the music is good.
What? I reviewed this when I first started lol guess it didn't go through? I don't remember what I gave it so a 3 will do
I am the Quarry. It wasn't bad. Not my jam really. Pretty decent lyrics
This is an ok Morrissey album. Not really my favourite, and no huge bangers, but not terrible.
Started slow but got better
Something here reminds me of a more pop-like version of Nick Cage. Not quite as emotional, but still a nice listen.
Morrissey is still a tool but there are some good songs here.
Pretty good but pales in comparison to the best Smiths stuff
fuck morrissey
It's a good album. I wouldn't say great.
I'm not sure what this is other than boring. Really not my kind of music. I'm going 3/5 because it's actual music and not experimental bullshit, but it's not good music.
liked some songs on this, but overall not my favorite of the morrissey records i listened to
This was ~ok~. It didn't really grab me.
I generally like Morrissey's music but this album was non descript. Kind of dull, slow-paced, absent of anything that grabs my attention. I support a Smiths album or two being on the list, and even Vauxhaul and I. But disagree on this one.
I really liked these songs musically, but Jesus the lyrics are cringe. Problem with calling out specific politics is that it doesn't age well.
3.5, but rounded down.
This was fun. 3+
There are no guilty pleasures... except for Morrissey. I had this CD when I was in highschool, a few songs fall a bit flat these days but there are still some solid tunes in here.
Quite enjoyed Irish Blood, English Heart, pretty cracking actually, and I Have Forgiven Jesus is also alright, but the rest of the album is a bit on the dull side. Morrisey is a lot more easy-listening than I thought, really bland early 2000s production. Not nearly as dynamic or edgy as he probably thinks it is. Much prefer The Smiths - he has a fantastic voice, but in trying hard to have 'messages', a lot of the spark is missing.
Honestly I’ve been very back and forth with this. I started off meh because he sounded mopey and whiny but then there were moments were he broke through but then it was mopey again but then towards the end it was fun again. I think it was too inconsistent for me and I can’t really determine how I actually feel. I did go into this thinking I wouldn’t like at all, so that is a plus.
The *7th* Morrissey-fronted album on the list (and counting!). Although as this has progressed I've gone from reflexive "i hate this asshole" to "i still hate this asshole but um ... goddammit some of his [and The Smiths] albums are pretty good...." I think after all these years I've gotten used to his voice but it's his lyrics that are *absolutely ridiculous* and what never puts his music in a place I can enjoy it fully - they're just so over the top and wordy that he makes Paul Simon sound concise. Most songs have no flow to them lyrically, even if some of the ideas are interesting. Half of them sound more like a New Yorker essay or bitter letter to the editor put to (good) music. Again, it's too bad, since this is a decent-enough musical album when I can dial my brain away from paying attention to the word salad. On the other other hand.... I'm not convinced that many or any of these albums are "holy shit you've got to hear this" albums. More like someone was the world's biggest Morrissey fan and wanted to put *SEVEN* albums of his on the list. I mean I know I listen to Rush's Caress of Steel often enough to put it my top 1001 albums but I'm not sure it's more than a deep-interest.... and yet I'd still put that over "You Are The Quarry" - I think I am going bald trying to slog through this guy. WAYYYY TL; DR: Speaking of word salad holy hell I've no idea where I'm going with this. I guess this is a mostly enjoyable listen, full stop. Not revolutionary. 6/10 3 stars.
There are few albums that are so firmly a 3; “Irish Blood, English Heart” is excellent, but the rest is pretty forgettable. Also, the man is a prick.
I've expected something worse. I would wager that if you've ever liked this guy and his music, you should be cool with this 2004 update, but I don't see much reason to like it either. Enjoyed some tracks, but all in all boringly serviceable music, from a twat. Before I listen too closely and discover how the lyrics are the politics of a Southpark episode, let's finish this with a 3. A 2.7.
6.5/10 - he made some good points but we have had one of the three types of presidents he mentioned in the first song. Overall a decent album but I probably won’t revisit
After everything I've heard about him, I assumed I would hate this album. And I didn't.
Viel besser als 80 % der hier vorgestellten Alben. Das Cover gefällt mir nicht! Reingehört? Ja! Intensiver? Nein! Note: 3
Great tunes from a wanker but he sure can write a title
Nothing particularly new here. Morrisey blends crooning, snark, and a generally dark view of the world on top of interesting music. But he has been doing it since the Smiths, so just listen there.
It was fine. It seemed more focused on his lyrics than on the music.
Generally not a huge Morrissey fan. But something about this one spoke to me. Maybe it was all the anger at institutions, the self-deprecating/self-loathing. It just spoke to me. Also, I just listened to a Limp Bizkit album from this list and anything would sound like a masterpiece after that. Fuck me.
It was ok.
I really thought i was done with Morrissey a few weeks ago. I literally said "ughhhhh" when this popped up as i eat breakfast at 430 in the morning. Wrong again. This was listenable plus he's angry at allot of the same people I'm angry at so that's good I guess
Decent. The instrumentals were nothing special. Not too big a fan of his crooning vocals at points. At first his lyrics made me mad but at least he is making bold statements with them.
i actually think some of these songs are overall not too bad, but i’ve never heard an album where i was so sure that the singer has absolutely nothing to say because they lyrics are so nothing like they are just like rachel barry’s my hairbrush it’s so like bruh who cares, and then also i feel like this album sounds weird idk how to describe it but it just sounds so weird, anyway, it was going to get a 2 but i’m going to grace it with a 3
This is the kind of music I think of when somebody mentions Morrissey. It's an ok album for me. I recognize a few songs, which I didn't on the past album I got "Vauxhall and I". Still, not the kind of music I usually listen. But this is fine.
Je vais être transparent: 🫥
Rock, Pop, 2004 -> 3
2.5
***An ok album, easy listening
Not bad
It was truly just like a sad sounding album… it was fine
Уебан, и обложка срань, но. Лучшая песня - First of the Gang to Die.
Usually I think “If I could understand the lyrics maybe I’d like this more” but I think the opposite is true of Morrissey. I need to hear him sing his songs in French. Then I can think “wow, I bet these lyrics are really deep because I love this music and he’s got a really unique voice” but then it turns out his head is so far up his own ass that his lyrics are nothing but self imposed cringe.
I feel like Morrissey and Roger Waters both just went down the line of becoming angry old men. Both make pretty good music though
Couple of decent songs but also a selection of forgettable ones too. He's a dick and i won't listen to this again.
Propper post-Britpop album with some catchy tunes and heavier/fuzzier guitars than usual. The Dears would go deeper and a notch darker.
another morrissey album yay first song is really annoying

Hey! Morrissey!
Like the Smiths , but this really felt like self pity . Not enough tunes .
I have to say this is the same as all his other albums (including the Smiths). It's not unpleasant but c'mon Morrissey try something a bit different?
First song bang, rest is okay. miss the smiths
I'll always prefer The Smiths to solo Morrissey, but it is pleasant.
Rather enjoyable overall. I’d listen to this more. 3.5/5
It's cool, solid Morrissey solo effort
A good Morrissey effort here.
Jetzt bin ich leider auch noch krank, deswegen gibt's nur die Sterne. Aber ich hör die Alben trotzdem and I'll be back ❤️

Seeing the word "Morrissey" on the screen, usually strikes me with fear, but this one wasn't so bad. Maybe I'm finally warming up to him?
Bra låtar men lite tråkigt ljud på de alla
it was fine but nothing special at all. and this guy sucks right??
Meh! You either love morrissey or not
Being new to this, I am not Morrissey-fatigued like the rest of you, but after the first 3 songs feature weirdness about America and Jesus, I get where you all are coming from. After a not-great start, I think this does improve especially with the production and instrumentals. Morrissey's singing style can really ruin some songs, but does work elsewhere. I actually thought First of the Gang to Die was not bad, but that might've been because it was the most "pop" sounding, catchy song. Thought I wouldn't like How Can Anyone Possibly Know How I Feel based on the title, but kind of digged it. The production value takes this from a 2 to a low 3.
Mr. Consistent. Maybe my favorite album by him? Not a high bar to surpass or anything.
A nice great songwriter (with the smiths) plumbs the depths of averageness here. He truly wasn’t the same without Mr Marr
Typical Morrissey.
It's okay, but it's the weakest Morrissey album so far.
a different sound that i’m used to from Morrissey but it didn’t fail to deliver. I enjoyed the album but will need to play it again and focus a bit more as I was distracted with things whilst playing it. rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️(69/100)
2.5 rounded up. A couple standouts but mostly meh crooners.
Huh, didn't think I'd see this album here. Opening track is quite wild. I think maybe he doesn't like America that much, not sure. It seems that the main selling point of this album is the provocative and sometimes witty lyrics. And he succeeds in that very well. Morrissey is one of the few people that actually seem to be as pretentious and self-occupied as he sounds. To me, it's not really enough to have crazy lyrics to carry a whole album, there needs to be something else as well. 'The First Of The Gang To Die' is a really good song with a clever story (and also completely orthogonal to the rest of the album content if you ask me), but that is the only song that I could really see myself go and put on from this album. There are a handful other decent tracks, but that's about it.
Little better than the Beatles
The fourth Morrissey album on the list. You only needed one, really. The rest of Smiths albums on the list carry enough weight to warrant his vocal prowess. Like his other solo albums, this one is fairly good with a few standout songs which is evidence enough that he is a competent songwriter who can shine every now and then.
Jeez Morrissey is tiresome.
Meh, somewhat insightful, trying to be funny too much
idk man, like its not bad but i think i might be comparing it too much to The Smiths music because this in comparison is not nearly as good as something like The Queen Is Dead. however, without the context of Morrissey being the former front man of The Smiths, its alright, theres some pretty good songs in here but nothing insane. I dont think Morrissey's voice works too well with some of the instrumentals on the album but other than that, not bad.
Not gonna lie, America Is Not The World was actually pretty funny. I respect that. I appreciated this album more than I thought I would.
A few good songs
Fuck up guy, good music
Kinda nice. He is a real prick tho right?
Morrissey is a shit but this is quite good.
Ok. Rather on the nose lolololol
Morrissey seems to be a flvery enigmatic person. I think the music is overall pretty good, and had themes that are generally pretty interesting and progressive, I just feel like the instrumentals and song diversity is itself pretty one-note. Not bad and definitely piqued my interest, but not one to revisit often. 3.4/5 -> 3/5
Even for Morrissey/Smiths, this isn't much to write home about, even if it was largely a "comeback" album after a long hiatus, and even ignoring what a punk he is and was. But then again, I'm not a fan (can you tell?). I *was* impressed at his economical song stylings, though: it felt like he came up with a lot of clever lyrics and then developed two or three music tracks to sing the lyrics to. Out of the six Morrissey-related albums in this collection, I'd rate it the same as every single other one: three stars for you, Mr. Whiny Emo Jerk. Unlike your relationship with Jesus, I do not forgive you for taking away a few hours of my life listening to you, but it's just not so atrocious to warrant 2 stars or less. I just don't like you, Morrissey.
Reveal thoughts: OK, Morrissey could be coo…2004?! Wasn’t Morrissey about 20 years past his sell date by 2004? So, It's hard not to like, because it's very Morrissey. He's got a very cool, soothing voice, and I like it. So there's that. But some of the lyrics, man. He's a deeply unlikeable guy, I think. He's VERY fucking pretentious who seems to think he's special and better than everyone. And sometimes, he *really* wants you to know that, at the expense of the song. An example is in America Is Not The World. Now, as an American, I like a good takedown of 'Merica as much as anybody, but lyrics like "Oh, in America, it brought you the hamburger. Well, America, you know where you can shove your hamburger." Like, what? That's not clever, that's just clumsy. Anyway, I like his voice. 3 stars.
Morrisseys big comeback after a few years away. Sounds like all the other Morrissey albums. Not convinced anything after Morrisseys solo Debut should be in this list. It's a good album but not essential listening.
Despite the hate, I weirdly quite like alot of Morrissey stuff. Yes, yes I know he's POS but doing this list and rating them based on the artist is so tricky so I am trying my darndest too separate them. Oh but back to the album, its okay...there is better stuff by him its a 3
Tällä levyllä on mun lemppari Morrisseyn biisit, mutta niitä lukuunottamatta tää on vähän omahyväistä/itsetietoista myhinää. Mutta taitaa olla Morrisseyn parhaimmistoa. Hyvät kitarat ja bändi ylipäätään.
Not really a lot of interest here. Interesting voice I suppose but I expected a bit more. On the three side of 2.5
Good stories. A bit high on the whine factor. Mostly done in minor keys
- gefiel mir deutlich besser, als Vauxhall and I - gerade zum Ende hin hat es für mich nochmal ganz gut aufgetrumpft
Once again, I would just like to say FUCK MORRISSEY, ALL MY HOMIES HATE MORRISSEY. And with that aside, it's just alright, but I do have First Of The Gang To die as a guilty pleasure. 3.5 bumped down to 3.
I really hate that Morrissey made a couple good solo albums. Makes my "Morrissey died after The Smiths and was replaced like McCartney" joke less accurate. Fuck him for being a xenophobic asshole, but dude can write some lyrics!
3.5
Didn’t think I would enjoy this as much as I did.
Morrissey still being Morrissey after all the years, still is a bop. he is still a piece of shit, but he can make good music.
Like, I GET IT. LIFE SUCKS. Stop it.
Of the Morrissey albums and songs I've listened to, this one has been the most bearable. I think the transition from popular music styles between the 80s, 90s, and 2000s is the main reason that I find this album better than the others. Still can't really give the album more than a three, but it is an improvement over Vauxhall and I. America Is Not The World definitely hits harder twenty years after release and seeing two female presidential candidates fail to be elected when running against a clearly weaker convicted rapist and felon. At least we've had a Black president since then?
-wow hard to believe this was a 2004 album. It stays very true to 80s synthpop and that’s not a bad thing, even if it feels a little forced. Most of these songs are pretty good if not a bit cheesy, I guess I’d rate it somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars? -Favorites are America Is Not The World, Let Me Kiss You, and All The Lazy Dykes
I’m in a slight bit of confusion as to what I should do with morrissey, it’s after the smiths but before got up farrage’s arse. It’s undoubtable that morrissey’s solo album is lacking in the same flair and pizzazz that his music has when he was with the rest of the smiths. Sort of felt a bit one more, but I did chuckle at points
Mozzy
I would like a lot of these songs a lot more if I didn’t understand English. I’m glad this is on the list because I definitely needed to hear that first track before I die. It is something else, and not in a good way!
Fine. Great voice. Not sure why I'd listen to this over the smiths tbh
xiiii tem que escutar escondido esse hein velho babaca filha da puta do caralho vai tomar no cu. vai se fude. first of the gang to die é um clássico. é um dos albuns mais presunçosos dele, mas eu até que gosto
People judge the person instead the musician, this noticed here and in Kanye’s reviews as well. I embarked on this journey keeping in mind that I don’t care about Morrissey or Kanye the persons, but the musicians. That said, I enjoyed this album. It has two great hits and a couple of decent lyrics. I believe it deserves the three stars.
Some humorous lyrics and good mid tempo beats. Most of it wasn't my thing but there were some good tracks too. Highlights: Irish Blood, English Heart
This is basically Morrissey, who was part of one of the most inventive bands of rock history, copying the generic sound of early 00s rock. So its Morrissey without the things that makes him special. It's still a well-crafted record, but I wouldn't spend too much time on this if I were to explore Morrissey and The Smiths.
much better with Marr and The Smiths
Wow well this was very self righteous wasn't it. Around the time he turned bad. I quite enjoyed it but did find the lyrics a bit distracting and laid on thick. Did like the music though
Hmmm, can't think of much to say except 'it's more Morrissey'
Previously rated: Your Arsenal (3/5) Vauxhall And I (2/5) ************************ Basic music accompanied by entertaining lyrics, which are sometimes comically bad. For instance, in America Is Not the World, he won't listen to anything America says until we have a black, female, or gay President, lol! So, I'll have to assume after Obama, he's totally cool with us now? The other lyrics range from bitching about how other people treat him to self-loathing wallowing. And then you have All the Lazy Dykes, which I have no idea what that was about. Was he criticizing lesbians or saying more women should try it out? Who knows? I think the best track was First of the Gang to Die, but I don't remember why.
This isn't my least favorite Morrissey album by any means, but it sounds a lot like most of his albums, which is to say that it's filled with whiny, self-indulgent, on-the-nose lyrics. Still, his voice sounds good and some of the music is interesting, so there's that, I guess 3/5
Never heard of him before. Okay album, but not very memorable.
Full of clever lyrics but none that spoke to me.
The first sentence is "Your head is too big." Every song on this album is good, but it's just Morrissey at his wankiest. Give the man a microphone and he'll sing about how sad he is, or how bad England is, or how much he hates the Queen, or how much he hates god, or how much he hates himself. It feels like every single song follows the format of "This thing happened to me, and this is how I feel about it. Me. Morrissey. Tortured artist." I've had "Irish Blood, English Heart" on my Spotify for years, this is a really good album, but god you just want to grab him by his pretentious, insufferable little shoulders and shake him.
Morrissey has an ear for catchy song writing but lyrically this is just too on the nose
Pretty solid album and usually a fan of his music, though he kinda (really) sucks as a person. 6/10.
Fun, but also largely forgettable.
Never quite got Morrisey. Clever lyrics but too morose.
He sings nicely. I don't have the background knowledge as to why this guy is so despised. 3*
A fine album with typically literate songs with some fine arrangements and melodies. Nothing new or revolutionary here but a satisfying listen 3.5 stars
It is true that Morrissey is a fairly repugnant man It is true that his post-Smiths stuff is often heavy handed and musically dull It is also true that First Of The Gang is a cracker of a song Call it a low 3 on balance
🎧In which Morrissey laments his deficit of British pride, forgives Jesus, and tells America where it can shove its hamburger. There’s nobody like this guy, this ignorant, out of touch, obnoxiously in-your-face vegan guy. Shitty man, surprisingly decent album.
Haughty, aloof, elitist, amazing. I love that he really leans into that persona. He has a great sense for what sounds compelling, and uses his voice just right to get your attention. He states things plainly but makes it sound poetic. In his words, he is not a “crashing bore”.
I liked it
It's all right for the most part, with one track ("First of the Gang to Die") standing above the rest. Better than I thought it would be.
E kje så fan av musikken, men han skal få plusspoeng for at han e seg sjøl lik
Wow this dude sounds so familiar, oh The Smiths. 3/5
I love The Smiths especially because I love me some whiny melodramatic Morrissey lyricism. But this album is unfortunate. It just doesn’t pack quite the wallop of his early work. It okay. Don’t be cry.
There was a redeeming value to Smiths era Morrissey. 2004's You Are The Quarry shows what an insufferable prick the man is. Still a decent album as most geniuses put out good material with little effort, very few tell you how great they are while they're doing it. 3/5
Morrissey without Marr is singularly pretentious. Despite my distaste for the man, the album is competent. The *music* is competent. The arrangements are good. The lyrical content is mopey, dramatic, pretentious bullshit that dribbles from the mouth of the person at the party I'm definitely trying to avoid. Morrissey is constantly writing the soundtrack for the redpill incel movement.
Fred Flintstone worked at the quarry. I always wished I had a job where a bird punched my timecard with it's teeth. Oh well. I never really got into Morrissey or the Smiths, not an album I'll revisit but I'm glad I listened to it.
Pleasent albeit a bit bland music at least to begin with. It picked up and became more interesting to me in the second half of the album Standouts The First Of The Gang To Die Let Me Kiss You All The Lazy Dykes 3/5
There's definitely worse on this list, the music's ok, the vocals are much better than his performance with the Smiths, but still not my thing.
I played it once or twice before, but not more. I recognized some of the songs. Probably my favorite solo album of his. It's good, but not spectacular. Favorite song: How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel
Not bad, but depressing but that’s Mozza. Not the same without Marr
2.5 stars. Lyrically not a fan, no subtlety. Musically it's fine, if boring. Pretty singing voice. Instrumentally kinda generic sounding alt/pop rock
Some 700 albums in and I start to think this might be the last Morrissey album for me? I hope so. I might be repeating myself in this review: - He is obviously not a bad singer. - There are some GREAT tracks on this record (“Irish Blood, English Heart” and “I Have Forgiven Jesus” being two). The rest I don’t really care for. - His discography really isn’t diverse enough to grant him this many spots on the list. What is You Are The Quarry doing that his earlier albums didn’t showcase?
It always surprises me how much I actually enjoy Morrissey when I actually listen to it,
3.5/5. Seriously, this better be the last Morrissey album that comes up.
Never heard from him and it seems in from general consensus that he is of questionable character. In that light , I've only heard of a few Smiths albums and they were ok . Trying to separate the art from the artist was hard here since the art itself contains his staunch beliefs. But it wasn't a bad record.
Fav: First Of The Gang To Die Least Fav: I’m Not Sorry
Ok Morrissey we get it America sucks and you hate it, sure. Irish Blood, English Heart is not my thing. I Have Forgiven Jesus is pretty good.
Couple of epic singles and some unremarkable album tracks
Non un granché
Pas un mauvais album, mais à ce point je me demande à quel point il a besoin d'avoir autant d'albums ici. Pas mal les mêmes commentaires que pur les autres. 6/10
Morrissey is unique, there are those that adore him and those that loathe him. I am somewhere in-between. This is a decent album but not as good as his debut solo album .
Yes, Morrissey is a smug nasty piece of work, but most of the time it works to his music’s advantage. It fits the slinky arrangements quite well.
My fourth and, god willing, final, solo Morrissey album from the list. This didn't actively annoy me in the same way some of his other stuff has, but lawd, the lack of self awareness in some of these songs is pretty cringe. Fave tracks - eh, "First of the Gang to Die" maybe?
Its okay 3.0
Some really good songs, but mostly not very interesting.
Some lyrics are questionable to say the least. Prefer him with the Smiths. Standout: First of the Gang to Die
This must a lesser known album, heretofore unbeknownst to me, and with good reason.
I love and laugh at Morrissey’s lyrics and self pity. But I miss Johnny Marr’s jangling guitar and melodies on this one. Morrissey solo is just not on par with The Smiths, which to me is perfection
Stabilt.
I never really got on the mortuary/smiths band wagon. But it’s not terrible. Nice after work drive home album.
3.5
New found appreciation for Morrissey after hearing this record
Better than I anticipated...had been a huge fan of Moz's solo work. Very political. 3/5
How Can Anyone Possibly Know How I Feel // The First Of The Gang To Die //
Morrissey. No me ha hecho mucho... Ni fu ni fa.
Crashing Bores indeed Mr Morrisey. Heading into his angry old racist phase. Still some nice tunes though.
um okay my guy
a couple misses but the smiths/morrissey scratch an itch for me
3/5. It's hard for me to get into Morissey because of his natural pretentiousness in his music but this well-polished and simple recording works well for him. Sure it definitely is more accessible and poppier but it works, it can be annoying when artists refuse to change their style for "art's sake." These are catchy and still introspective, even if some lyrics are a little too surface level. Best Song: Irish Blood, I Have Forgiven Jesus, First of the Gang to Die
not bad, smooth and easy listening which was nice and calming to listen to throughout
OK, this is my second Morrissey album (well, technically the first was The Smiths), and dare I say much better than the first I had listened too. There's still an arrogance Morrissey has that I can't quite get behind, but musically the album is good.
Yup...um...sounded like Morrissey, and for me that is not the greatest thing. I mean, whatever...
This is exactly what I expect from Morrissey and I enjoyed it exactly as much as I expected.
2024-05-21...
I didn't like this one as much as Your Arsenal. It also sucks that Morrissey sucks as a person, because I'd be more inclined to get more into him as a musician.
Despite the man who made it being a twat, the album was ok. Lets face it the man does what he does well but he did it better than the 80s. Also, what does he have against burgers? A burger has never hurt anyone but a racist… nevermind, 3 out 5 stars.
The lyrics on the first song are so dumb but also funny - I enjoy the music though. The lyrics all around are just like annoying even though his voice is good
Solid
Ugh this fucking guy again! Honestly not bad, I’ve never heard of this guy, yet he has two albums on the list so far… maybe he just was never popular in Canada. I’m not sure.
It's OK. Not a big fan of his moaning and complaining
I hate how much I enjoy Morriessey's music for him being such a shit human. 3.5/5
My first time listening to Morrissey, and it was an interesting album that I thought had some good songs on it. There were a few where I also thought he's just saying things for a reaction but overall, not bad to listen to.
Great Album!
I didn’t listen to the whole album but I was impressed with the first songs I heard I thought the Jesus song was especially moving.
Morrissey's "You Are The Quarry," released in 2004, marked his return after a long hiatus. The album features his signature wit, melancholy, and social commentary, wrapped in polished rock production. Standout tracks include the anthemic "First of the Gang to Die," the introspective "I Have Forgiven Jesus," and the infectious "Irish Blood, English Heart." Morrissey's vocals are emotive, delivering his biting lyrics with conviction. While the album is a strong solo effort, it doesn't quite reach the heights of his work with The Smiths. Overall, "You Are The Quarry" is a solid but not exceptional effort, earning it a 3 out of 5.
Good album. I never know what to say about it, I mean, it’s Morrissey. He’s kind of his own sound. He was better with Johnny Marr by his side, but still entertaining.
This really didn't gel with me, but it took me until the second listen through to figure out why. It's because of that reserved British thing where the lyrics are angry and emotional but the music is poppy and whimsical. To me the juxtaposition just doesn't work.
Moz. Not the best, but still Moz.
It’s quite difficult listening to a Morrissey album in 2024. What previously passed for self-deprecating wit just sounds like a bitter old man whining about how nobody loves him. There are still some great songs here (Irish Blood English Heart, I Have Forgiven Jesus, First of the Gang to Die) but a lot of boring and cringy ones too (I Like You is especially bad)
Not as good as viva hate Don't enjoy the lyrics at all I enjoy it musically Few good songs; Let Me Kiss You is one of the highlights. High 3?
Forgettable. Waited too long to review and don’t even remember anything from it.
It was fine, but quite boring.
Ok I can’t deny the instrumentals and melodies and songs themselves are quality. But I can’t get over Morrisseys self righteous whiny ass liberal ass attitude all over this album. I haaaaate most of the lyrics on here.
Morrissey. No me ha hecho mucho... Ni fu ni fa.
Irish Blood, English Heart elevates an otherwise passable album to a worthy listen. 3.5 stars.
- lyrics are fuckign odd. i mean it’s morrissey so duh - thought lazy dykes was going to piss me off more than it did - i haven’t listened to the smiths that much and I’m sure some of their lyrics are odd too, but the kind of chill smiths vibe guitar with ‘well, america, you know where you can shove your hamburger’ - realized his voice is KIND of vaguely similar to alex turner’s but i think it’s just becuase they’re both british and annoying - will listen to again but won’t add to my library - 3/5 i GUESS… it’s like fine to listen to
2,5
Interesting storyteller
Good music.
It’s OK, I enjoyed it upon its release… and still revisit it now and then (“Come Back to Camden” in particular, with its kinda throwback R&B ballad style), and I suppose it got some play back in the day on WXRT. But seems neither masterful, influential or historic. There are other Morrissey-adjunct albums I could imagine appearing on the 1001 albums list … this is far from one. 🤷♂️
It was okay but it was certainly no The Smiths. That is also a pretty hard act to follow because The Smiths were amazing.
This was the first Morrissey album I purchased myself, the others that were available to me were my brothers’. At the time I was disappointed. There didn’t appear to be any songs with the charm of the older ones. And tbh I always found Morrissey and the Smiths a hard listen because of the jazz type phrasing of his lyrics. I could cope with this if I knew the song really well, but obviously didn’t know these songs well. This has subsided with time and hearing this album with fresh ears I really rather enjoyed it.
morrissey pisses me off with his racist bullshit
Ah yes, The Smith. Just one of them. Here we have the first of four Morrissey albums that I'll be listening to for this project. He definitely does not deserve four albums, but if any of his solo albums are going to be on this list, this one makes more sense than the others. Anyways, I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Is it as good as the one The Smiths album I've gotten so far? No, definitely not. However, this album isn't that bad, but it's not perfect. I'll start with a complaint that I don't think I've ever made before. The singing is decent, and the instrumentals are quite solid, but I feel like they don't mesh well with each other. Anyways, the writing is certainly interesting. Some of it makes sense, other parts don't. I was expecting the album to feel like The Smiths, but it really didn't at all. That's fine and all, I just don't like the sound of this album as much. Has this album aged all that well? Not really. Sometimes it's for funny reasons, like in the first song where he brings up how America's never had a black president. Other things relate to more serious topics regarding who Morrissey is as a person. Overall, this album's fine, but kind of forgettable. Low 3/5.
He has better
A real surprise and delight. Lyrically on point, and even over 10years old and it is still prevalent, as if he predicted the future. The Lefties just struggle liking him as the truth hurts.
Love Morrisey! But this album is nothing special 3,5/5
Ah, the Morrissey paradox. The guy is so obviously sad, damaged and lonely that I can't help but feel quite sorry for him. But his entire public persona for the last 30+ years send to have been to make himself as dislikeable as possible. A real arsehole, but one who still made plenty of objectively good records. This is decent, not great, but definitely a diverting listen. Begrudging respect.
It’s odd, with the other 800 albums I’ve reviewed, I don’t think the personality of the musicians has much of a bearing on my score, but for some reason with this guy the two things are inexorably linked. The tunes are OK, Morrissey has some very strong options I don’t always agree with.
Pretty forgettable, but mostly pleasant tunes. 2.5/5
Morrissey's 2004 release, "You Are The Quarry," landed with a mix of anticipation and skepticism. Here's a breakdown of its elements: Lyrics: Classic Morrissey Themes: Angst, alienation, societal critique ("America Is Not The World"), and introspective melancholy ("First Of The Gang To Die") dominate. Witty Wordplay: Lines like "You have never been in love/ Until you've seen the sun rise/ Behind the Home for the Blind" ("Irish Blood, English Heart") showcase his signature lyrical style. Self-Obsession: Critics point to a focus on personal woes overshadowing broader themes. Tracks like "I Have Forgiven Jesus" delve into self-pitying territory. Music: Polished Production: Producer Jerry Finn provides a clean, radio-friendly sound. This departs from the Smiths' jangly guitars, leaning towards a fuller, more mature rock aesthetic. Genre Blending: Elements of electronica ("Certain People I Know"), glam rock ("The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores"), and even a touch of reggae ("Irish Blood, English Heart") create a diverse soundscape. Catchy Melodies: Singles like "First Of The Gang To Die" and "Irish Blood, English Heart" showcase strong hooks and memorable choruses. Production: Slick and Polished: The album boasts a high production value, evident in the layered instrumentation and crisp sound. Overproduced at Times: Critics argue the emphasis on polish sacrifices the raw energy present in some earlier works. Emphasis on Morrissey's Vocals: Finn's production keeps the focus squarely on Morrissey's distinctive baritone, which has matured with a richer, smoother quality. Themes: Disillusionment: The album reflects a general sense of disappointment with society and the world. Songs like "America Is Not The World" criticize American cultural dominance. Loss and Mortality: Tracks like "The Loneliness Of A Middle Distance Runner" grapple with themes of aging and the passage of time. Unrequited Love: A recurring theme, evident in songs like "First Of The Gang To Die" and "Certain People I Know," explores the ache of unfulfilled desire. Influence: Continuation of Legacy: "You Are The Quarry" solidified Morrissey's status as a solo artist with a dedicated fanbase. Limited Commercial Success: While commercially successful compared to his later works, it didn't achieve the heights of The Smiths' era. Divided Critical Reception: The album received mixed reviews, with praise for its catchy melodies and Morrissey's voice, alongside critiques of its self-indulgent lyrics and overproduction. Pros: Strong Vocals: Morrissey delivers a powerful and nuanced vocal performance throughout the album. Catchy Melodies: Several tracks boast memorable hooks and sing-along choruses. Genre Exploration: The album incorporates diverse musical influences, showcasing Morrissey's artistic evolution. Cons: Repetitive Themes: The album heavily relies on familiar themes of alienation and self-pity, potentially alienating new listeners. Overproduction: The polished sound can feel sterile compared to the rawness of his earlier work. Lyric Shortcomings: Self-absorption and a lack of fresh perspectives in certain lyrics limit the album's emotional depth. In Conclusion: "You Are The Quarry" is a polished and commercially accessible album showcasing Morrissey's signature voice and songwriting style. While praised for its catchy melodies and strong vocals, it suffers from repetitive themes and a lack of the innovation that marked his earlier work. The album serves as a testament to Morrissey's enduring influence while reflecting a shift towards a more mature sound.
My heart sank when I saw who it was. I don’t like Morrissey and can’t understand the fuss. However, it wasn’t bad. It was easy listening. I would never seek out his music as there’s so much better out there but overall a middling 3*
