Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Signature Morrissey voice that I've now discovered and really enjoy.
Turns out America has had a Black president, so does that mean you will stop whining now?
Always been a fan of 'First of the Gang to Die', but never listened to much Smiths or Morrissey. However, found a couple of other gems in this album. Very impressed.
Very anti-imperial and very timely to 2004. Morrissey really flipping off the crown and parliament! It’s a little lyrically literal and also very dooms day… but I guess that’s Morrissey? It didn’t make a huge impression on me if I’m being totally honest, but I understand why it’s important.
It’s an enjoyable album.
Annoyingly competent
Morrissey is a twat but Irish Blood and First of the Gang are surely some of his best solo tracks, they are good. A lot of the rest is quite moany but I guess that's his brand, his lyrics are never generic at least and he always has an ear for a melody
Ok, this is more like what I was expecting from a Morrissey record, not sure what the difference is but this one is far more interesting. Faves: America Is Not The World, The First Of The Gang To Die
Borderline four / five. Just about every song is a catchy jam.
sad n horny
Another good Morrissey album.
Not a bad album at all, but that album cover is hilariously bad. Why does Morrissey have a gun, please don’t hurt me.
Nota: 7/10 03/06/2024
I've never listened to this album, or anything by Morrissey after the early '90s for that matter, so I think this was just the sort of thing you'd want to have heard from him in 2004. It's pure Morrissey, so I roll my eyes once in a while, smile once in a while. It was pretty good.
While I am questioning whether a third Morrissey album is needed on this list and I was annoyed by several songs on this for their preachy droning, I ended up liking a lot of this. It’s more enjoyable on the upbeat numbers for sure. But I think we got the idea so it is ok to stop with the Morrissey.
I was pretty surprised to see this album was on the list. I've always enjoyed this album and think it is one of my favorite late-period Morrissey albums. Morrissey is more outwardly political on this album and doesn't work as hard to hide it. So the cover is very apt, as he is taking more of a machine gun to his targets rather than sniping them with the lyrics. Yeah, he's a shit person. I have always liked this album and it is hard for me to grade it, as I do not know if it is essential to be on this list. This seems to be another case of if a person likes Morrissey's previous work, then I would definitely suggest this album. As a standalone album, I can't say it would be essential.
Probably my favourite Morrissey album. Clear and resounding lyrics.
You can build an entire career on whining, just think of The Cure. So on a 'comeback' album it's strangely comforting to see his complaint button is practically falling off from over-use. Americans, the British state, Jesus, London, other people in general, people who say they understand him, lesbians, people he's jettisoned...just as well as while the lyrics are exhausting his/colleagues melodic gifts are in fine fettle. The first half of this album is one the strongest of his solo career. Now, he's still a massive racist and bellend and nothing here in any way contradicts this.
- A lot of these songs sound the same but they're still good - I like his voice tbh " She said she loved me, which means she must be insane" true - All the lazy what now - Honestly pretty good, I'll give it 4
fire album, amazing lyricism, first solo morrissey i’ve heard and looking forward to more
Like it. Indeed Morrissey at his best
I liked this quite a bit, disappointed to find his politics so problematic
Gotta say I enjoyed this; I found it more consistent than the other Morrissey albums on the list. The music is muscular and sure of itself, and the lyrics... well, he’s always sure of himself, but this is Morrissey doing the Morrissey thing (self-pitying wallowing, self-defensive jibes, lovelorn yearning, occasional righteous anger, twisted humour and a heavy dose of sarcasm) in the most direct, streamlined way.
It is a wonderful album. Great songs with the Morrisey touch.
Vette teksten, coole zang, wel veel hetzelfde
Sorry, I loved it. We're slap bang in the art vs artist quagmire, and I'm still doing the separation. Lyrically, I think this is right up there with some of the Smiths work, and the two singles from it are absolutely massive. First of The Gang To Die is just a huge, huge adrenaline rush. I'll be singing it for days to come now (so sorry, everyone, blame The Project). Thinking about it, I'm probably marking this down because of Moz, so it turns out the art and the artist aren't all that separate after all.
This is my second Morrissey album to review, after Vauxhall and I (I’ve already reviewed all three Smiths albums). As much as I don't care for Morrissey the person, I’ve really enjoyed every album of his that I’ve listened to, so I had high hopes for this album. Thankfully, this album didn’t fall short of my expectations, and I enjoyed it a little more than I enjoyed Vauxhall and I. The first three tracks were absolutely fantastic. “America Is Not the World” had me cracking up. Is this song supposed to be funny? Morrissey’s message on this song was relevant in 2004, and it’s still relevant today, but it’s kind of silly in a way, and I don’t mind that at all. I loved the way the frantic guitar contrasted with Morrissey’s vocals on “Irish Blood, English Heart.” I loved when the chorus would kick in, and yes Morrissey, fuck Oliver Cromwell. “I Have Forgiven Jesus” was probably my favorite song on the album. Growing up in an evangelical household, religion was often used as a weapon against my brother and I, and I’ve had a strange relationship with my faith as an adult, so I really related to this song. The middle of the album was probably my least favorite part, but it still had some really good guitar playing, great vocals, and really interesting lyrics. The last three tracks pulled me right back in though, and I really loved the more experimental nature on those songs. The guitar distortion and keyboard sounds were not what I was expecting, but they were both incredibly well utilized. This was a really good album, and it’s always through gritted teeth that I have to admit how much I like Morrissey’s music, whether it’s with The Smiths or his work as a solo artist. I wish I had come across this in 2004 when it came out, because I think I would really have enjoyed it then as well. I’m looking forward to the last two Morrissey solo albums that I’ll get to review.
Less dynamic and more didactic than the earlier solo records but solid all the way through, with no real dogs and uniformly high quality throughout. Really good, in other words. One doesn't get the covers, really, but will show up for any Morrissey record including those that sound like therapy sessions, as this one often does. It just works, however, and the playing on these records is sneaky good. Not the Smiths, obvs, but consistently strong. As for the lyrics, there are ample performative provocations (see "America" and "Jesus"), just as one would expect, with all the "is he on the level or not?" wonderment (which no one has done better), all leavened out with just enough emotional vulnerability ("Camden" the best song he'd done in years, tbh), which raises the same "ironic or not?" questions. Quality from a unique and masterful artist.
I got worried that my eyes would roll too far back in my head while listening to this album. Talk about separating the art from the artist. Yeesh. I hate to say it, but Moz has the chops to make any grueling lyrics into a listenable bop. I just wish he'd keep his mouth shut outside the vocal booth.
The ceiling for my enjoyment of a Smiths-less Morrissey is fairly low, but this self-important sad sack’s solo effort packs just enough biting wit and wry worldliness to outweigh all the eye rolls.
Surprised by how much I enjoyed this album!
Long time Smith's in Morrissey fan but I never actually gotten around to listening to this album. I like it
I only know Moz from what I’ve read and The Smiths, I’ve always dismissed him as an asshole but it turns out he is a talented asshole. this album really stunned me with its arrangements and heartfelt lyrics. His vocal delivery was quite breathtaking as well. This is why I do this list always discovering new things!
Listening to Morrissey is like wanting to give someone a hug and punch then in the face at the same time. Four Stars.
Who am I kidding? I love this great white mope. I'm not sorry.
Despite my Punk preference, I was a big fan of the Smiths in the 80’s, and played the vinyl off their first two albums. Lost interest after they split, and gave Morrissey no love. I like this album… a lot. I will put this in the playlist, and dive a little deeper this year. Thanks!
Not at all what I was expecting and I’m happy about it. My favorite was “How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?”
Comeback album. Played this record a lot in 2004, as it is very listenable and contains some very strong songs. Lacks the feeling of a 5-star album though.. still has this rather bland sound, despite all the great songs on it. score: 8/10 (I am puzzled why the list instead of only Smiths albums contains Morrissey solo albums - even three of them - it does not make sense.)
I enjoyed this. Especially his shitting on America for thinking the world revolves around us. Amen, Morrissey!
Quite possibly the worst album cover of all time.
I really want to hate Morrissey, but somehow I can't. He seems like quite a twat, but perhaps that's just a persona he adopts to the public, I don't know. But his music, when it's good (which it is on this album), is just so good. The songs really pop. 4 stars.
The Smiths lead singer sings again
I'll be the outlier. I'm not a huge Smiths-head. I like 'em, but haven't really done the deep dive. But I remember when "Irish Blood, English Heart" came out that it really caught my attention. It still does! I like the opener. I like the flute on "I'm Not Sorry." I like "Let Me Kiss You." "All the Lazy Dykes" is... interesting. Etc. I'll definitely allow that it may pale in comparison to the rest of the dude's catalog, but maybe ignorance is bliss here for those of us who don't know a damn thing about a damn thing.
Actually quite a nice album from late-stage Morrissey. The songs and lyrics are potent with scorching lyrics on the US and British politics. When the more modern production comes in I think it is really well done and suits Morrissey well. 7/10
Kinda odd but pretty smooth. I liked it
Very good. Indie Rock.
Morrissey is ever present and fully full of him self on this album; why is it still so enjoyable to listen to him be pedantic and whiny?
I must be dying because I actually kinda enjoyed this one. I am an avid Morrissey hater, but this didn't make me want to kill myself after the first, second, or even the third song. The songwriting was great on most of the tracks, with only 2 or 3 that I thought were pretty bland. His voice wasn't awful, the production was fantastic, it actually sounded like something from 2004, the list goes on. I feel like the grinch when his heart grew 3 sizes, but mine only grew like 1 size maybe because it's still Morrissey. Favorites were Irish Blood, English heart, I have Forgiven Jesus, and The First of the Gang to Die.
One of his last great albums. Great lyrics still.
This scratches my Smiths itch pretty good, can’t deny that! Morissey being as cynical as ever. But still such a great voice. Fun songs, great song writing, all that you can expect from his music. Standout: America Is Not The World, Irish Blood, English Heart, I’m Not Sorry, How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?, First Of The Gang To Die, All The Lazy Dykes, You Know I Couldn’t Last 8 out of 10
7/10. Liked this better as I got farther in. First couple songs just felt like him complaining about stuff
Many albums on here really start to fall apart after the first few songs.... this one started out sounding like a laundry list of complaints set to generic music, but nearly halfway through it becomes something much more power ful musically and lyrically. I really loved the music and passion of the second half.
Really great stuff. Not The Smiths, but great listening as a Smiths fan.
8/10 I fucking hate Morrissey as a person, but he’s still an incredibly talented musician
I recall when Morrissey made his comeback with this album and the lead single Irish Blood, English Heart. I freakin' loved it and wanted more of it, or at least that song - it is a rocker with great lyrics. The rest of the album didn't seem to get as much airplay despite charting well. Listening now I will say this. Wow, Morrissey still doesn't hold back does he? That lead single is scathing of certain English traditions, as you can imagine someone with Irish heritage would feel. But right from the album opener America is Not the World he is dishing it out. I get what he's going after and that song has good lyrics, but in true Morrissey style it goes a bit too far at times (suggesting Americans abroad are seen as big fat pigs). And if he hasn't pissed off the Yanks and the Brits after two songs, why not piss off the Catholics on song three with I Have Forgiven Jesus. I'm sure my mom would loathe that song. But I don't mind it, or any of the barbs he slings on this album, because I understand Morrisey's poetic license. And he is a great poet even if he pushes the boundaries too hard. This album really made me think and I enjoyed that, a lot. Although there were only a few other rocking songs (How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel, I Like You, First of the Gang to Die - I recall this release too), I also enjoyed the soaring and/or despairing tones on other songs (Come Back to Camden, I'm Not Sorry, The World is Full of Crashing Bores, Let Me Kiss You). And the closer, You Know I Couldn't Last, goes between soft, soaring, and rocking and I love it (gave me goosebumps in the soaring choruses). Great lyrics to boot. This album is just as good as his solo debut, if not better. Morrissey is still a dick, but he is a musically gifted dick. I really couldn't get enough of this album.
An actually fun album with a very progressive and socially conscious lyrics. But what's really great, is that after listening to this album, I was singing some parts of it, even though it was my first time listening to this record. Very fun stuff, will listen again!
Nos racistes ont du talent
c etait bien voila c est dit
I know Morrissey the human divides opinion, and so does his music. Now, I’m not saying I like the human, and he’s not my favourite member of The Smiths, but I do love this album. He brings his unique style of hatred and self-deprecation and mixes it with a few catchy pop songs. There are enough masterpieces on this album to warrant a 4 (‘I Have Forgiven Jesus’, ‘Let Me Kiss You’, ‘Irish Blood, English Heart’, ‘First of the Gang To Die’). Some lyrical brilliance, and some perfect musical arrangements. The guitar and keyboards on ‘Let Me Kiss You’ are magical. A few fillers so not a 5.
Morrissey before he became unbearable.. It's good
This (horrible) man knows how to do music for me much more than I like to admit, and I rated 2 (good) of his previous albums 2 stars, so the 1001 list won this game. Here it is my 4-stars to Morrissey.
As a white cis male, I don't see the problem with Morrissey. 4/5
I think Morrissey is a bad human but I did think his album was annoyingly good.
Wow I love this album, reminds me of the Strokes I think? May be the wrong band to compare to. Also lyrically this guy is great.
Morrisey tekee kyllä varsin hyviä levyjä, tykkäsin tästäkin. Teksteissä onnistuu koskettamaan tietynlaista melankoliaa hienosti. 4/5
Morrissey Genre: Alternative rock, pop rock, indie rock 2004 Standouts: Irish Blood English Heart, First of the Gang to Die, I Have Forgiven Jesus, First of the Gang to Die Others: America is Not the World, Come Back to Camden, I'm Not Sorry, Let Me Kiss You, All the Lazy Dykes, You Know I Couldn't Last
The singing is great, it’s a great singer songwriter album. Really fun music, really good at what he does. Nothing ground breaking, but any song from the album is really a good time
I had no idea what to expect with this album, but I loved it. His vocals, the instruments, his political commentary. What a ride.
Political, relevant. Such a unique and lovely voice too!
I had forgotten how great this record is. I'm not sure if it is his best but it's close.
-"America Is Not The World" and "Irish Blood, English Heart" are both pretty awesome -"How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?," "First of the Gang to Die,' "I Like You," and "You Know I Couldn't Last" are quite cool as well
some beautiful tracks here - i'm not sorry, first of the gang, you know i couldn't last. Obviously the first signs of dubious politics and being generally unpleasant (...crashing bores, Irish blood, English heart etc., lazy dykes.. ).
pretty nice
Monster
Brilliant album. Great pop songs. Witty, heartfelt, acerbic. One of his best post Smiths records. Highlights: Irish blood, English heart; I Have Forgiven Jesus; First of the Gang to Die.
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Powerful lyrics, great vocals. Might have to give some more Morrissey/Smiths a try.
Me gusto, no se entre 3.5 y 4
There are some genuine bops on here, and Morrisey is as sharp and sardonic as ever. It's pretty good.
Ansonsten super Album. "He is the first of the gang" , "I like you" ...
love morissey - hate nazis
Y te va a pasar a ti.
For someone who hates meat, he's very gammon. He would hate SHACK's breakfast choices.
Top 3 en no orden particular: Irish blood, English heart, Let me kiss you y I have forgiven Jesus.
Not as good as Your Arsenal or Vauxhall and I, or probably Ringleader..., but a solid comeback and the one that got me into Moz
Dig his voice
America is not the World, I'm not sorry, I like You, ...
I was starting to think I just don't like Morrissey, but I did enjoy this album. He's a crank but he has some good points. This may sound like a dig, but my favorite part of the album was the last minute of the last song, "You Know I Couldn't Last," when that cool bass line kicks in and they rock out to the finish line - I could listen to that on repeat for a while.
Despite how much I don't want to like Morrissey, I actually liked this a lot. Good music for depressed people.
NIce
I forgot how much I love Morrissey. This isn't even my favorite album.
Maybe the last time Morrissey wasn’t someone you could easily ignore as a hateful loser. The cracks are already showing but he’s still somehow keeping it together. The politics in the first two songs are a bit cringy, especially in hindsight but you can appreciate what was going on at the time but criticizing America for not electing a black president and inventing hamburgers. Guess what Moz, those are the least of their transgressions lol First of the Gang is a good track and there are a few other moments despite it overall being pretty mid and some outdated trip-hop beats thrown in for good measure.
I always love his voice/tone. But the politics on this album- yuck.
I ended up liking this more than I originally thought I would. It was what it said on the tin, and I had never heard of this artist before. I found the main single a little on the nose, but then again the English public needs to be hit on the nose. I don’t share its nostalgia, but I do admire its music.
I love Morrissey, but this not my favorite album.
3.5 it's fine
Better than I’d thought
Morrissey’s You Are the Quarry is a perfectly fine listen, even if it sometimes feels like being cornered by someone who really wants you to hear their politics. The songs are solid and his wit is still there, but the social and political shots can be a little too blunt. I didn’t dislike it, but compared to The Smiths and the other solo albums we've heard of his so far, this is probably the one I’m least likely to revisit unless the album generator makes that choice for me.
This was fine to listen to. It's nothing I would purposely come back to, but it was fine.
Thinks he’s so great. He’s just ok. As an artist. Better in a band than alone. As a person, he sucks.
Alt pop rock British
Late Morrissey
Morrissey has his fangs out for everyone on his comeback record. Even when Morrissey takes a political stance that I agree with (something that's unfathomable these days!), he delivers it in such an unlikeable way that it is hard to get behind him fully. Some of the songs here are good, whilst others feel like post-Britpop hangovers, with Morrissey being a decade too late to the party. I've never been one to wish for an artist to not be political, but this album is at its strongest when Moz solely focuses on putting out catchy bangers. See "First Of The Gang To Die" for example. "Irish Heart, English Blood" is another highlight, with the guitars giving the song a James Bond flavour and Morrissey coming across more tolerable as he delivers his musings. This is a frustrating record, despite its high points. I can see myself coming back to individual tracks, but not the full record anytime soon as Morrissey here makes it too damn hard to spend more than 15 minutes with him.
I imagine this is on the list because, at the time, it felt like something of a return to form - Morrissey sounded (and still sounds) motivated in a way he hadn't for a bit. Nothing here really qualifies as essential but the marriage between Moz and pop-punk producer Jerry Finn is fruitful in the ways you'd expect. Lyrically this is mostly ground Morrissey has treaded before, and better - and the exceptions, such as "America Is Not the World," feel like uber-period pieces. But this still belongs on the better end of his solo work. (Also, where's his left arm on the album cover?)
3 stars for the Morrissey's band. The song writing did nothing for me.
Ok, Morrissey, you're depressed and misunderstood. We get it. He's talented but the lyrics wear thin.
Standard Morrissey.
I wasn’t all that impressed with this album - it’s fine, but I don’t really feel like it’s one that “needs” to be heard.
Morrissey bad guy
"You Are the Quarry" resembles the Smith's music if they added more instruments than the guitar and lost the reverb. It's just like Morrissey to make 2000s guitar rock sound theatrical, which doesn't really pair well for me. This is probably one of the first times I paid a little more attention to his lyrics because they come off as whiny and embittered. This resulted in a bit of disconnect for me where simple rock hooks clash with the "woe-is-me" mood.
As you’d expect from Moz there are some good lines scattered around, some droll and some obviously about how miserable he, the world and others are. That American song isn’t great but if he thought it was bad back then…. Highlights - The First Of The Gang To Die, I Have Forgiven Jesus and I Like You. I think the sterile production and lacklustre backing band on a lot of songs makes this a 3 rather than 4 territory.
Good singles. It's no Vauxhall and I though.
It open strongly, finishes well, and reaches a zenith with the first of the gang, but there’s a fair bit of mediocrity interspersed around those high points. Not as good as some of his other solo work
It was fine, not his best work.
3.5
Say what you like about Morrissey, he knows how to pick a guitarist. Some of the guitar lines on this absolutely fucking rip. I liked this a lot when it came out, but it doesn't hit the heights of The Smiths. Also, obviously, fuck Morrissey.
he has better
not bad/listenable. I thought I took a stand on Morrissey but the more I listen to his music the more I respect it. He may be a "wanker" by British terms but I don't actually know the guy or even know the controversies well enough to be a true critic. I wish you could comment on these reviews so someone could tell me the history of his personality/opinion on the man so I wouldn't have to go digging. all this rant to say is that this is good enough of an album. not my favorite but not bad.
It's a shame that Morrissey ended up being such a POS because this is a pretty good album about isolation and antiestablishment. It kind of makes sense though, he seems to have a lot of self loathing and that tends to be a common theme with bigots.
Highlights: America Is Not The World, First of the Gang to Die, I Have Forgiven Jesus and Let Me Kiss You. 3.8
Very good album. Great lyrics. 3,5
A bit childish ! The lyrics are quite dumb and so is the message ! The melodies are good but nothing exceptional. My least favourite from him
Not sure this was needed amongst the other Morrissey/smiths albums, but still a good selection of songs
This is definitely a Morrissey album. A couple of really good songs, one or two “meh” tracks, and the rest is either not great or super depressing.
Kinda boring but a great voice
You know, I don't take back that there are WAY too many Smiths/Morrissey albums on the list. After one or two, you get the point. But gosh, this wasn't bad. Not as deep as Morrissey thinks it is, but the music is not bad.
yea morissey is annoying yet i can’t help but sigh agree with his lonely whimpers
I am a pretty big Smiths fan (I don't like Morrissey as a person), but this album feels the most inconsequential out of every Smiths/Morrissey album on this list. It is fine. There was really no reason to put this over Hatful of Hollow (my favorite Smiths album) or any of the other Smiths albums for while we are at it. Anyways, the music is fine, no more, no less. Mid 3.
I find it difficult to rate Morrissey’s *You Are The Quarry* because the mix of pretty good rock songs and cringeworthy ballads doesn’t give me a consistent impression. I could just give it three stars, but I’ll try a different approach first. Here are the rating criteria: The songs: for the reasons mentioned, they don’t help much. The production: good arrangements, professional sound—but that means less for an album released in 2004 than it does for recordings from the ’60s. The vocals: I somehow remembered them being better from The Smiths. The lyrics: dark humor is certainly something special, but Lou Reed definitely could have done that better. Hmm, so still mediocre after all.
I’m a fan of The Smiths and generally like solo Morrissey. This one is a bit more laid back and down tempo. I found it ok but not particularly noteworthy other than the First in the Gang song, which is a banger.
Much better than I remember. The first song is still very relevant!
I'm sure I would enjoy this more if I was still an angsty teenager - but it just doesn't have the same effect anymore. I would say standard Morrissey fare, but it does feel a bit like the beginning of the end
Bastante bien el disco. Me gustó.
I found this record to be fairly representative of most rock/indie/alternative albums released in the early 2000s: Larger-than-life singles that remain amazing 20 years after, and filler songs that you will forget they exist five minutes after listening to the album.
Not my thing. He's lost the great music of the Smiths and, whilst toning down his dreary voice and lyrics, still not completely gone
My favorite: first of the gang to die
Frankly, I could write a review alone about the cover itself that has absolutely nothing to do with the music. Morrissey, with a machine gun in hand and a striped suit, looks like a low-cost model for a Spirit Halloween rendition of a mafia costume. The songs are all over the place, some more interesting than others. All the song titles are memorable, if not wacky. Nobody can accused this album of being boring.
Are there more Morrisey albums on here than Smiths albums? Why?
If you have this on in the background then this is an ok album. Start to pay attention, though, and you realise it is just all the early 2000 musical tropes, alternatively invoking The Corrs, The Killers, maybe throw in some Suede and Kinks and even Robbie Williams in there, with all the while the self-pitying wank-balladry of Steve-o mewling over the top. He really thinks his lyrics are cutting and inciteful and oh-so-very sharp. They are not.
The music behind the jackass was good.
Eh, I guess Morrissey just isn’t my bag.
★★★¹
# Album Name: You Are The Quarry # Artist: Morrissey # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Pretty standard safe play here from morrissey. I remember when this came out. Two big songs. The rest rather bland and middle of the road. # Top Tunes: First of the gang to die / Irish blood # Would I listen to it again? Nah
Just another Morrissey album; feels like the same song on repeat.
I love Morrissey but this album is not very good. Irish Blood is ok, I like First of the Gang to Die and Crashing Bores is a classic for me
The worst person you know makes an ok album. It almost feels as if he’s become a parody of himself Stuck in an infinite loop between his head and ass, but he still writes a decent tune with a decent band.
this guy can choke on a boot but this kinda bangs
3 1/2 Stars: Okay, okay...I totally get why everybody calls him a whiney twat. His lyrics can be a little insufferable. But he's always had a great voice, and the music in general here is pretty solid. Not sure I would put this rather middling album into this project, but I can say that for a lot of these entries. There's certainly been worse.
Some sounds were good. Others made me want to punch him
I feel very middle-of-the-road on Morrissey. His voice is very recognizable and unique, but so much so that it never really feels like it fits with the instrumentals. That’s especially the case here with the energetic rock tracks. All good music, but doesn’t really fit both his voice and the lyrical content. I appreciate the political commentary in his writing as well, but it just doesn’t land quite right.
So many people are so eager to tell that Morrissey is a miserable and whiny that they themselves become miserable and whiny. Seriously, when you guys repeat like a parrot that mantra “he’s a pretentious twat” - you are no less pretentious :) Just to clarify - I have no specific love towards him, I just can stand him somehow. Now to the actual music. It kinda sucks (what, you thought I was going to defend him? If you thought so you totally missed my point). Morrissey in The Smiths - good, Morrissey solo - something way off. Ok, there are couple of interesting moments here and there, but overall it sounds so freakingly 90s style pop/rock that at times tries to be alt rock but it’d better not. Like The Smiths meet Travis - meet Blur - meet Suede (in a very bad way) - meet I don’t know who else, but those dance elements are so 90s. Probably I’m thinking about someone like Natalie Imbruglia. Anyway, point is - this whole setup just doesn’t fit Morrissey, his vocal and singing manner, that’s the problem.
I had a lukewarm political take one time too
Well, I like his voice. Some songs were interesting, the rest really didn’t do much for me.
Liked it. I will explore more Morrissey
3 'Morrissey Sings His Reddit Post History'
Pretty tight Morrissey record. His voice shines a little extra in this one I think (like the added emotion on "Come Back to Camden"). I dig the band behind him too. Overall a nice listen. Sometimes I listen to Morrissey and I can't help but hear a little bit of Mike Patton, when Patton is doing his "noir burlesque lounge singer while the world falls apart" sound, which is cool! Of course he came before Mike Patton. Great album cover. A little bit silly but really superb.
Morrissey's comeback album, I know a few of the songs. I kind of liked at the time. Some great tacks on here, some very mid ones. He rhymes it and shit. The guys a genius. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Some Owned: No 65/264 (24%) Will I get: No
decent
I am a big Morrissey/Smiths fan however never really warmed up to this album
Best Songs: Irish Blood, English Heart First of the Gang to Die I Like You
Annoyingly toe-tappy. I dislike the man, but this is a decent album.
To be honest, I wasn't looking forward to this. I'm a big fan of The Smiths but Morrissey's stock as a person really has plummeted with some of the things he's said in more recent years and whilst I can forgive him with the music I already know, listening to new stuff didn't appeal! I did also question whether there'd be some choice lyrics here but actually, whilst you can see the seeds of some of what would come to be in a song like Irish Blood, English Heart, there's nothing here, at least that I noticed, that is obviously deplorable. That said, I did find myself sometimes audibly telling him to shut up as he can't half moan! His voice is in good form here and musically, it was mostly decent and occasionally very good with some nice arrangements although it lacked the vitality of The Smiths which didn't really help with some of his whining. So not as bad as feared and I gather that it was not long after this that Morrissey's decline started to happen and that makes sense. That said I doubt I'm going to be itching to listen to this again as I know where it goes from here.
Definitely just an essential listen for Morrissey fans, not really music as a whole. There are some great songs on here, especially the run from Crashing Bores to Last of the Gang. It does start out preachy and whiny but I still enjoy the songs themselves if you fuzz out the actual words. Morrissey just has an ear for good tunes. Rating: 3.5
He sure is whiny
this was my THIRD Morrissey album on this list (and i have a horrible feeling there's going to be at least one more...) so i put off listening to it for a full month in protest. unfortunately for me this was actually my favourite of the 3. he's still so, so annoying though.
Meh. I remember this coming out to great critical acclaim and fanfare but it’s not for me
Morrissey is a real tough guy. See that silly suit and Tommy gun? The America song was pretty funny and the rest of it was just a high schooler walking around going “the thing people don’t get about me is… I just don’t care”
Ok, wow. When I saw this come up I thought I was going to have to find a way to allow the system to let me give it 0 stars. I've never enjoyed a Morrissey song and never liked his voice. Against all the odds, I really quite enjoyed this. It won't be on regular rotation, but it was a surprise, so fair play.
2.7 1x driving to ELT sac
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? I know it was supposed to be his comeback album but I don’t know any songs from it How do I feel about this artist? Morrissey kind of pisses me off. The Smiths are cool, I don’t know his solo worked very well but I’ve heard it’s good Favorite song(s)? Come Back to Camden, How Can Anyone Possibly Know How I Feel?, I Like You Overall Thoughts: This was a solid album, all tracks felt like they belonged. Morrissey's voice is unique but enjoyable with lyrics that stand out. NOTE: When it comes to certain artists I am doing my best to judge an album based purely on the music, not how I feel about the artist as a person
Nice. But the singer is a fucker and the sounds all the same.
From the opening track he wastes no time lobbing grenades, lamenting US arrogance while simultaneously basking in the adoration of his adopted home. This duality, disgust and desire romance and disdain runs the entire record, making it one of the most biting yet oddly tender work. What makes this record stand out is its sheer clarity. This album is produced with a more polished sheen that snaps everything into focus. The guitars sparkle and the rhythms hit harder than expected.
From the few Morrissey albums Ive gotten so far, I've really enjoyed him. So many reviews about him being a douche. This is the first album where lyrically I get the douche sentiment. Very middle school level rebellion against the world vibes.
An extremely beautiful voice. Some songs just as beautiful some songs a little preachy.
It’s so good. His gorgeous voice in combination with his pissy lyrics. Moments when I had to turn it all the way up, others where I was just smiling to myself. It’s not the smiths but it’s close enough to get some rotation from me.
This was much better than I expected There are some actually pretty catchy tunes on this album. Lyrics are nothing less than I would expect from the one who so long ago penned such classics as Girlfriend in a Coma. I'm not sure I would listen to it again, but it's not bad.
Good voice good music bad song(text)writing.
First Of The Gang is one of the best cuts from his solo career. The rest of this is largely crud.
Is this the album that broke me through with Morrissey? Possibly. I need to go back and listen to the Smiths again.
A good album, I liked America Is Not The World, I Have Forgiven Jesus and I'm Not Sorry the most.
I know he’s a bit miserable but I rather liked it.
Bangers and Mash. Fish and Chips. Egg and bacon. Some things just need to go together. And so it is with Morrissey and Marr. All the wonderfully sardonic lyrics are there (America is not the World lands especially well on the day that Iran is attacked). But blimey, the delicacy of Marr's playing is needed to lift the leaden backing. I can just stretch this to a generous 3*, on the basis that the lyrics are great, and I might just play First of the Gang to Die again.
6.5/10
I was such a Morrissey fangirl in high school, remember seeing him at the Fillmore in 2007 where he played this album. This has lost much of its charm for me. The First of the Gang To Die still holds up for me, but most of the rest doesn't make an impact.
Top 3: The World Is Full of Crashing Bores, Let Me Kiss You, First of the Gang to Die
Musically, this album is mid, not a great one, for sure. But it's listenable, and, at some extent, even nice. So I am a bit overwhelmed because... oh, how prepotent Morrisey is... and it also applies to his music. It feels like a kind of intellectual act that I still can't find interesting, and I'm not willing to either. So, well, at least it's a kind of sweet music, pretty simple at (many) times but effective for him and his voice. If it weren't because of some lyrics and... Morrisey, overall. But I'll stick to the music, it's not my cup of tea. It truly isn't.
Oh boy, the Reform UK national anthem. A nice comeback album but it is still Morrissey. Probably should not be in the book but I won't complain for this one. Liked a couple of songs on here for awhile and this was the first time listening to the whole thing.
imagine you are listening to an entire album where each song is about a guy ranting about how insane he is because he is interested in someone. It's fine, the music itself is a bit boring but at least its mastered well.
Yep, sounds like Morrissey.
*I don't love Morrissey and his lyrics but this album cuts straight down the middle for me- nothing amazing but nothing bad
Another one from one of the most overrepresented artists here. Classic split for me where I like his musical taste and direction but strongly dislike his self-important, me-me-me songwriting and whole persona. Another middle of the road Morrissey, no surprise
It's not bad. I've always preferred The Smiths to Morrisseys solo stuff, mainly because of Marrs guitar riffs
Despite being a massive cunt, the boy done good with some tracks on this album. Marks off for cuntdom though.
The only thing that would make this better is if it wasn’t a Morrissey LP. Really hate that I like this
This is actually a pretty new album, given the fairly old sound that it has, but it's overall alright for just leaving in the background while doing stuff. It wasn't too bad, maybe a bit of an older vibe though.
Tis easy to hate on Morrissey given his repeated outbursts and when you apply todays morrisey to the lyrics in some of these songs its odd, Musically good, but I find it hard to agree with the message in manyt of the songs.
America, your head's too big Because, America Your belly's too big And I love you, I just wish you'd stay where you belong Some of his best solo material is on here but it’s not fully consistent and leagues behind anything by The Smiths.
Man. Can only stand Morrissey when The Smiths were a thing. I don't hate this music. But he does bother me. And I don't really care for the music either so, meh.
6/10: songs/music were great, lyrics were kinda funny but pretty bad at times lmao
I really didn't expect so much political rhetoric, but I enjoyed it. This Irish/English punk is really edgy but good.
The comeback and the beginning of the end on the same record.
I expected to hate it but I found it hard to do that but it just never gets great or bad it just carries on in the middle of the road.
My first Morrisey solo albums, I've heard a couple solo Morissey songs mainly "The National Front Disco" and "First of the Gang to Die," and I adore those songs. So I thought maybe this album would be filled "First of the Gang to Die"-like songs because that song is just that good, boy was I wrong. You Are The Quarry is mostly filled me more with disappointment than enjoyment but there was some other tunes weren't half bad like, "Come Back to Camden" and "I Like You." I consider myself a big Smiths fan, so I thought I'd be similar but slightly worse, because it's just Morissey without the other Smiths guys. No, that's not the case, though Morissey has a bajillion more albums on the list so they COULD be better. Highlight Song/s: "Come Back to Camden", "The First of the Gang to Die" and "I Like You"
like the sound of his voice, it records really well, still would like a bit more drive to his music and find it starts to drone on/drag out although second last song "i like you" was my favourite song on this album, felt very down the middle and radio friendly overall though
Commercial successful from 2004.
He seems perpetually mad at the world. Maybe he’d feel more of the love he says he has to give if he wasn’t so full of himself and treated people more kindly. That aside, I actually liked this album. It was the second day in a row with an album chock full of misery, which I wasn’t exactly looking for. But the music was well done enough that I could look past the dreary outlook of it all. The First of the Gang To Die and I Like You were my two faves. Another 3.5
Every Morrissey album has one or two good songs with a mix of ok and bad songs. This album has more ok songs than bad but still basic Morrissey fare
Honestly, pretty good not sure when I’ll be going back to this one, but it is good.
I do appreciate Morrissey's knack for a melody. This album was not my favorite of the big batch served up.
While the first two songs were good, with punchy lyrics, listening through all of it felt a bit hard. It's a good album, and good songs, but the manner of signing, the way he articulates words, not my personal favorite.
It's an album and it has songs on it. 2.5/5
Self-absorbed musings...musically ok
Pretentious and catchy
3.5
The music's pretty good. His singing and voice are both pretty good. So it must be the lyrics that are so friggin' pompous and annoying?
Some of these songs aged like a brick to the face, just like Morrissey. That being said, he's still a great singer.
This is not his best.
3. funny
Boring
Why did I love this??? The first two songs really pulled me in but it lost me as I went along. Def not as good as viva hate but not that much worse. Strong 3.5
3.5/5
Some pretty cringy lyrics, but he has a nice voice! I’m not sure I would consider this particularly deft political commentary, lol
more interesting than I thought it'd be
liked this a lot
makes me like morrissey just a tiny bit
A few good tracks but nothing that will live long in the memory
Good album
Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland.
This is a showcase of Morrissey at his best - great turn of phrase, with, bit, unexpected melody. But it lacks the power of the Smiths. The backingusic is not bad or badly played but it does not have the melodic imagination of Johnny Marr’s guitar or the powerrful drums of the Smiths. Would listen to again but not a fiver.
6/10
3/5 Stars
“I’m not sorry” - Morrissey That made me laugh. Real hit or miss on this throughout. Didn’t add up to much in total
Not as corny as the cover implies but still nothing crazy
first listen alright
This is where the party ends, huh? not related but: please stop drinking, dear mister Liam Gallagher. We hate you for saying a racist slur on twitter when drunk but we love you because you apologised and deleted it. but ig its actually more decent than i thought like moz, why are you so funny and misanthropic. also why is he so poppy but still whiny. 3/5
Not really a Morrissey fan, but he's growing on me.
I like Morrisey. He has a nice voice and some really good songs. None of my favorites are on this album and while as a whole its a good album its kind of easy to forget right after listening to it. Only one song really got stuck in my head and then I was off to another album instead of listening again.

So dramatic but it’s funny. He is entertaining for sure. Epitome of a drama queen.
we live in a society
Thursday, is pathetic 🥀💔😔 Omg he’s so pretentious
Somehow this opening makes me think that this is a person who is cooler than I am. I mean, that was a given, but yeah. …ok, not sure what I make of that one.
As an American political independent, I'm as critical of Americans as the next guy, but that first track was a pretty shallow and juvenile attempt, and the next one starting right into criticism of the English was just as bad. Also, I'm pretty critical of organized religion, and I felt the same way about the Jesus song. So, three stinkers right off the bat. Things picked up after those and got back to a more Smiths-like (but a little more grown up) Morrissey, which I like ⭐⭐.75
Ah man I love morrisey's voice!
It was meh. Not a huge fan
America elected Obama just to spite Morrissey
7/10 Favourite: I'm Not Sorry Least Favourite: The World Is Full of Crashing Bores
If the lyrics weren't so miserable and pretentious, this album would be solid. As it was, there's only so many times you can listen to Mr Morrissey bemoan the fact nobody wants him. Maybe it's because you are a ball of misery? On a positive note, I didn't actually mind the music and found it easy enough to listen to.
I have heard some songs by Morrissey that I cannot remember the names to. What stood out in those songs that does not stand out here, was the excellent guitar playing. He has changed guitar players for this album and it shows. Other than that, I really am not a fan of the droning kind of shoegaze music that this sounds like
Kind of annoying but also not bad?
Nah, not for me. Somewhere short of Bowie and I don't much like David Bowie. I kept waiting for those big hits to jump out. Not so much.
Very recognisable Morrissey but not his very best - and definitely not as good as anything The Smiths (which would all get an easy 5 from me). So a big fat 3 but not quite a 4. The songs are good, there just aren't any standout, spectacular one on this album. But in the right mood I can enjoy this.
I like how pathetic he is
Decent album with a few standouts
Pleasant enough for a listen but no stand out tracks for me...
In this album, Morrissey assures us that he was a "good and nice kid" who is only racist because he is English. But don't worry: he has forgiven Jesus for making him like this. Also he wants to kiss you.
This was much pop-ier than I was expecting, but that's not a bad thing. I liked this overall pretty well. 3.25/5
This was fine. Not sure why I need to hear this before I die?

Decent rock
The only thing I hate more than Morrissey is my enjoyment of his music. I honestly don't know why a third album of his is here, but I can't lie and say I didn't enjoy it. As before, I prefer the sound of the Smiths because Morrissey needs someone like Johnny Marr to balance him out. But You Are The Quarry is good. Even as an American, I appreciate "America Is Not The World" and understand "Irish Blood, English Heart." I just wish Morrissey would stop being so holier-than-thou.
3.5 I liked it. However, he can shove his fish and chips
Removed. Listened anyway. Moz is OK by me. That's, not a real machine-gun, gangster
Soft and mellow, not for me
The king of whiners and pretentiousness still has it. He does have a pretty great voice.
Morrissey, the biggest cccccccccuuuuu
Not for me
First time listening to Morrissey ever so I had no idea what to expect, let alone from an album cover where he's holding a Tommy gun. What I found was a decent rock album very reminiscent of the time it was released in. The track "Irish Blood, English Heart" sounds like it could have been on The Killers's Hot Fuss. Easily a 3/5 for me
It was alright tbf
Interesting album, some catchy stuff along the way, and some genuinely wacky lyrics. Struggles of being of Irish origin in England is addressed a number of times. Intriguing, apparently it made him big with Mexican/Latinos in America. I'm Not Sorry was my favourite. Low 3* (2.8 rounded up)
This is fine.
Har lyssnat igenom. Har ej tid för recension.
5.5/10
some good melodies
Ej, czemu uciekacie?! Niech ktoś tu przyjdzie i mnie przytuli!" Przy "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I feel" cringowałem. A mimo to Morrissey wciąż potrafi być poetycki, chociażby "Come back to Camden" jest śliczne, a "First of the Gang to Die" to jeden z moich ulubionych utworów Anglika. Ale ten album to dla mnie trochę hit and miss. Mimo to czasem pewnie wrócę. 3,5/5
I thought it wasn't anything special but after listening to Sugar I have wraped look onto music and how deep the medicore well can go.
Easy listening, good jams and lyrics. Not really my thing but I get it.
alte de isch jo huere hässig. aaaalte you fat pig?? broo morrissey chill. vorallem ischs meeega platt. aso dmusig gfallt mer eigentli no. aber brudi isch das on the nose. irish blood english heart au sehr direkt. wenigstens jetz sochli anti england? mh weisnöd. i have forgiven jesus? er will meega fest edgy sii oh mein gott. come back to camdem eher uf de pathetische siite. aso herzig. schöni chords und so. i'm not sorry au sehr subtile titel. do findi s intrumental ehner ustuschbar. nöd schlecht aber macht etz nüüüt. the world is full of crashing bores isch recht geil. au wenns easy ghässig und verbitteret wirkt wieder vom text her? ischs amel chli ironisch? let me kiss you findi no cool. bitz groove. super pre chorus? brudi someone you physically despise but my heart is open. huere brutal. you know i couldn't last goht recht los, findi geil. fast beste song? git e 3 well chli kindisch verbitteret? und aber au recht cooli songs mengmol. seltsam irgendwie.

Controversial, political, dramatic, and not bad. Songs seemed quite similar by the end of the album. (2.6*s) We’re not done with this Brit…
Another dip in the Morrissey well for better or for worse. I can't disagree that objectively he is a competent musician and songwriter. However, he manages to do everything in what seems like the most obnoxious way he can possibly think of. The subject matter appears to be designed to piss everyone off and alienate as many potential fans as possible. Despite this You Are The Quarry was OK for a one time listen. It's got a little more modern swagger to help cover up just a bit of the Morrissey melodrama and completely ridiculous lyrics. It's another entry in the "meh" department though I think I've had my fill of Morrissey on this list. 2.50 stars
Please god don't make me actually like Morrissey 3
Tough one Moz.
The other day, Labi Siffre issued a cease and desist order to Tommy Robinson for his use of Something Inside So Strong (he said, “Anyone who knows me and knows my work since 1970 will know the joke of them using the work of a positive atheist, homosexual black artist as apparently representative of their movement.”) I enjoyed the witty lyrics of You Are The Quarry, but worry that Morrisey might have written Irish Blood, English Heart in support of this spirit of isolationism and intolerance. Hopefully I am completely misguided, but the bad taste remains in my mouth. So 5 stars for the good music and outspoken content. Remove a star for Morrisey's dubious politics. Remove another star because I've never really got on with Morrisy/The Smiths on a subjective level: my toe tap doesn't tap to their tunes. But? I? Kind of? Liked? It?
