The same African mumbling with instrumental improv throughout the album. It sounds like it has been recorded in one go without preparation (would be cool if it really was though).

As much as I wish this list had more World music, this album just didn't do anything for me. A very chill album. Too chill. Boringly chill.

Idk, I kinda feel bad giving this one such a low score, it's a posthumous release from an icon in west African music and I respect that...but I just do not vibe with the music at all. Album has exactly one sound that it never deviates from, the song structures and instrumentation aren't interesting, and at an hour long it was really a slog to get through. Maybe some of his other albums would do me better, but I did not like this.

African Blues made by a dying artist. I was into it at first but it slowly got a little boring as it went on. Still, I did not dislike it and can recommend if you're into this kind of music. 2.5

Really good blues, but it’s not always my favourite genre

This is some music I have not really heard anything like before. It really probably shouldn't play a factor in my review, but it does make it very difficult for me to vibe with and like an album when I simply don't understand the lyrics. The first few songs on the album had me thinking that maybe I'd enjoy it just for the tunes because I thought a couple of those early tracks were jamming a bit! As the album kept going, though, it was a lot of the same stuff, and none of it was really doing much for me anymore. I can see an appeal here for sure! I enjoyed hearing something new, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed the album overall.

2.5 Impressive guitar work, and reminiscent of Blackstar in that it was written and recorded by an artist knowing that his last days were upon him. Supposedly Touré pioneered the genre of music heard here, referred to as desert blues, which is definitely what I would consider an apt label for what I heard - a little drier and more chaotic than your normal blues, keeping you on your toes while you listen. Unfortunately, all of that charm seems to run out somewhere about halfway through this album and it’s a long journey to the end from there. Didn’t dislike anything I heard here, but it was a bit long and didn’t give me much to grab onto (I think it’s in French? Couldn’t find confirmation, but that’s the official language of his native country, Mali). Hesitant to give another 2.5 since I feel like I’ve been handing out a lot of those lately, but really feel like we’re in a string of “meh” albums. While not one of my favorites, I guess Matthew McConaughey is a big fan. Alright, alright, alright.

Not sure if I'd put this one on my list, certainly unique, but I skipped a few and didn't really connect to any of them.

It's alright in places, like Soya and Machengoidi are nice to listen to, and listening to anything blues-influenced is usually decent, but this mostly misses the spot for me.

Dinner party / background music for me, Clive. It's not unpleasant to listen to, but it's pretty stripped back to focus on the vocals - the singing is fine but unremarkable, and other than the odd phrase in French I can get, I don't understand them. Makes this album very difficult to appreciate for me, I think. 2/5.

I really wish I liked albums like this more than I do, but it is really difficult to relate to them, especially when it's the blues. I loved the instrumentation on N'jarou, though, so that's my favorite track

La présence de multiples recueils d'africanaiseries dans cette liste est dûe à un changement de comportement improbable de Robert: en effet, ce dernier est persuadé d'être africain. Lors de ma dernière visite à son domicile, je fus stupéfait de voir que Robert arborait un boubou flambant neuf. La stupeur ne fut qu'amplifiée quand ce dernier commença à m'invectiver avec une très mauvaise imitation d'accent africain: "Comment ti vas ltrapeze EH, ti as fait bon voyage?" Je m'enquis rapidement de lui demander qu'est ce qui ne tournait pas rond avec lui, mais sans même me répondre, il me pris par la main pour m'inviter à déguster "le mafé EH".

It made for some nice background music, but in many ways it just sounded like the same song over and over. It probably didn't help that I also had no idea what he was saying. I'm sure it's really good, but I didn't need to hear it before I die.

Savane is the final solo African Blues album by Malian musician Ali Farka Toure - released to critical acclaim 4 months after he passed from cancer. There's not much other information about this album, but it was cool seeing a different style of blues music - one that is spiced up with African instruments and style. I believe if I was from Africa myself, then I would find this album a lot more interesting. However, I can still appreciate the difference from Western music.

Has some influences of Robert Johnson, only 90 years later. Sound a bit dull, sloppy and some instruments are out of tune. And boy, I do miss the percussion.

A 2.5... ok enough for a light listen. I liked the depth of the music, in both the different instruments as well as the accents of blues, Indian, Caribbean, Spanish etc... Most of the songs in themselves were repetitive and sometimes too long. Plus not being able to take away anything lyrically and the spoken/chanting vocals knock it down for me. And was generally kinda over it by the end.

Ok, I’ll just going to say it, it sounds like a bunch of guys having a music session together rather than a actual album. I mean maybe that’s the intention I dunno but with the exception of the album title track they all just passed me by. I like to think I’m pretty diverse and open minded with my music tastes but after a week of doing these reviews it appears that I’m not, so there’s that.

I will admit to this one being a DNF. But that's not because it's bad music - it definitely isn't. But blues isn't generally my genre as it's too slow and steady. It gets 2 because I love the harmonisation between the voices and instruments on the tracks I did listen to.

Anti perfectionist approach to this album, I like it already. Although, opening track began to feel like a loop towards the end. Stronger vocals presence in the 2nd track. But not too compelling.... A different variation in the 3rd track but after a few seconds it shows that this song is just like the first two in terms of instrumentals. Not my type of album. Needs more variation for me. 2 stars.

Coming deep out of left field (Mali to be exact), this album has a lot of grizzled soul. Songs tend to be overly long and overstay their welcome with little variation to justify their length. This ultimately becomes an exercise in how much one can "appreciate" world music in one sitting, which isn't very long for me.

Chill blues

Throw in a fuzz pedal and drop that guitar down to B tuning and this could be a pretty rad drone metal record. As is, not something I’ll likely listen to again but I love how clean and clear the production is. Dude looks pretty cool on the cover there. I want that chair.

Sinceramente desilucion, pensaba escuchar un Soul o Blues interesante, escuchable y lo unico que escuche fue musica que no estoy familiarizada ni siquiera con el idioma. Tal vez sea una alerta para que pueda empezar a expandir mis gustos musicales hacia lo desconocido, pero la realidad es que con Savane no encontre nada sentimental ni bueno ni malo, simplemente no entendi de que va. 12 - Ali Farka Toure - Savane - Rating = 1 Have never heard of this guy or this record. The start of the first song and the mash of fiddle and acoustic guitar and the African-like chanting coming in sort of noodling… harmonica… almost a tune-up song. This is not grabbing me. Softer but the Indian/African chanting is a no for me. The music behind is inoffensive enough… but the vocal… Guitar noodle to start… sax? There’s the chanting coming in… the title track is slow… not interesting. Overall this is just too weird for me to like it. This is just a sound/album I would never listen to or consider… I mean I’m listening because I want to play the game… but this is just not for me.

Savane by Ali Farka Touré is a beautifully crafted album, but I have to admit I found it quite boring. There’s no denying the musical quality here, it's rich, warm, and full of gorgeous interplay between guitar lines and traditional instruments. The sound is unique and undeniably atmospheric. But that atmosphere drifts into the background far too easily. Before long, the album becomes something you forget is even playing, and despite the beauty, it just never held my attention. I found myself waiting for it to end, and I can’t see myself returning to it. Favourite track: Soya is a lovely, gentle highlight. Least favourite track: The title track Savane felt particularly dull. Album artwork: A fitting cover that sets the tone for the music inside.

Dicen que si hay un bluesman africano, ese es Touré. Este es su álbum póstumo y que recién acabado el propio Touré catalogó como lo mejor de su carrera. Yo, que ya reniego del blues clásico, solo me falta que su equivalente africano esté relleno de sonidos tribales, asonancias y vocales rudos amelódicos. Podria marcarme un 10 erudito pero estoy más por puntuar por nivel de disfrute, y este ha sido insuficiente.

Not sure I understand why it is on the list

I've never heard of him. I don't know the context and I don't want to know the context. I mean, ok there's an interesting mix of influences for whatever it is supposed to be, but it just reeks of a nice snooze on Saturday afternoon at Womadelaide. I'll never listen to this again.

African Blues is worse than American Blues, one song is all it takes for me to know that is true. This is truly like if blues and traditional African/Middle Eastern music had a baby. This is the kind of music you'd find on in a West African restaurant where only rich white people who are looking for "authenticity" eat. There's nothing wrong with the music, it's just more like something decent to have on in the background rather than an album I want to listen to all the way through. The mores blues driven songs are much better. That's not a very high bar to cross though. N'jarou is probably the best song on the album.

To be perfectly candid: This music has never been my jam. I can see why people may like it and at some points it was very relaxing, but in general not for me.

Each song is kind of the same droning guitar riff over and over and over and over and over and then there’s some western African singing over top of that. It’s not like… awful to listen to. It’s good for when I’m working or something. Or if you were running you could keep a good pace with the tempo of the songs. But nothing really stuck with me. And I feel like this album is only on this list because it’s a very influential artist. The album itself didn’t really feel like anything all that magnificent. 1 ⭐️

Too bad, I thought I would hear new blues for myself. There were also a few good approaches. Nevertheless, it did not meet my taste at any point. More and more the music got on my nerves. When I jumped for minutes in individual pieces and didn't notice any change, I stopped the album. 1/5

Why this? It is soooo boring

Going in, I already know that blues is something I do not vibe with at all, so just going with the flow of the music is hardly an option for me. Flow, to me, feels like something to groove to, perhaps even dance a little, but this album suffers heavily from seemingly having nothing going on. Perhaps lyrically it is more investible, or maybe I should be blown away by the guitar picking, which I can admit is technically quality, but is incredibly dull, and the appearance of minimal percussion as well as rarely a brass or woodwind instrument, just leaves the album feeling barren. Not in a personal nor gripping way, but rather something to understand as its bare minimum the moment you hear it. Once you hear the first track, that't it, you are not getting something deeper here. It won't have a shocking twist track, it won't courtesy you and change to something more interesting, and even if you are a person only here for the "vibe," its hour long runtime only aims to make every track even more repetitive. I was sick of the songs here, ten minutes in, so another forty-five only lead to pure annoyance. It never dives into something offensive, and maybe you'll find yourself getting it more than me and be pleased by the overloaded tracks, but I find this to be a pretty obvious case of an album receiving more praise due to its creator sadly passing away before it release, and while that is a shame, and I mean that, I do not see anything truly remarkable about the music. Add in the fact that this from 2006, and I fail to see why this would be any more essential than any other blues record, and the genre crossover of Songhai music does nothing to the blues presented other than making something more dry a little more humid, and that isn't really a good thing, I feel. Tedious, and due to its length, annoying.

There were some cool sounds from a large variety of instruments, I wouldn't say it was bad but I did not really enjoy it. Music didn't really go anywhere

I have started listening to all albums twice, when I have the time (no, not the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), because I’ve found that getting more familiar with the album and knowing more what to expect, mostly impacts rating positively. This time, I only got more annoyed and took it down one star. That’s how little I like this album

In some places early on in Savane, it really reminded me of southern Italian folk music from the 50s and 60s. There were some ok sounds and motifs throughout, yet after about halfway though the album, as I had no connection to anything, I wanted nothing more than to tune right out and pretty much turn it off. Almost pushing 1 hour is too long. Best: Yer Bounda Fara Worst: Gambari Didi
