So hard to dig this world music
Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Boring ohne Ende.
Not something I’d listen to again but cool that it’s on this list
Not my kinda music
Not my thing, i guess
Interesting swath of genres for an international album. Made it more accessible than typical world music.
Ehhh. Nah, can't do this one. I mentioned before, but I just have a really hard time connecting with music where I can't understand the lyrics. That's a me thing, but it's just how it is. But even that aside, I didn't find the music particularly mind-blowing, pretty basic blue-ish progressions with a pretty minimal sound. Oh well. Not for me.
I'm glad I listened to it. I will say it's not really my thing.
Annoying.
Not so good
Music that I only listen to because Robert Dimery has a list aimed at my head Gets pretty repetitive and boring since it's the Blues, but there's still an okay amount of variability between songs and some instrumentation novelty on display instead of just mind-go-numb rambling guitar with harmonica interjections at scheduled intervals. It's still a late-era Blues album, though, so it's not great, but it has things to offer Judging by the Wikipedia page this album is more overglazed than a donut in a wheat shortage but good for you if you find that much value here
This isn’t for me. Too mellow. I respect that it made waves though.
Interesting, not for me though.
nice but not my jam today
Yes it was different but there lacked a certain luster to this album.
52/1089 2.2440* I respect the ability and creativity of the artist. African blues is the genre and it sounds just like you'd expect. This is an interesting album based on the delta blues. It reminds me of what would be played in a movie as people dance in the middle of a swamp trying to conjure a voodoo spirit in the bayou in the darkest hours of night. If you like the blues then you'll like this album!
Id never have heard this if it wasn’t for this challenge, but would I have missed out on it? Not sure. It was unique, fun take on blues.
Thought I would like it way more than I did.
I just don't like the sounds
This was fine but boring, most 2.5 star album ever
Meh, very bluesy kinda thing. Enjoyed the first listen, but wont come back
Refreshing to hear something vastly different from my normal music taste, but I don't think I would revisit.
Didn’t understand one word! It’s an alright Folky-Bluesy album but nothing great
not a fan but still kinda chill
Best Track - "Machengoidi"
I'm no expert on African Blues (I literally only have other stylistically similar 1001 offerings as reference points); this felt like a good quality example of something that's so far out of my wheelhouse, it might as well be on another planet. I didn't afford this its near-hour long running time, but I can't in good conscience give it a 💩/5 as per my usual "DNF" process.
Eh, more "world music" that I likely won't listen to again.
3/10… desert blues / *2006
p909. 2006. 2 stars. Well done African blues-folk hybrid, but overly repetitive and missing standout songs. Didn't do anything for me.
2
Not unpleasant. Bit samey
Glad I listened to this but I doubt I’ll listen again
A couple of the blues stuff was interesting, but overall I did not enjoy listening to this album.
I'm not too knowledgeable about Malian music but every track sounds very similar to me. might just be unfamiliarity.
This was disappointing. His voice is great and the instrumentals are good, but almost every song is just one 5 to 7 second idea repeated ad nauseam, and the album is too long. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
I guess it’s fine. It’s not really my thing
Not my vibe, but still interesting. 2/5.
Some good instrumental but wtf was he saying
Interesting stuff...never listened to anything like it before. Pretty repetitive to my ears, but technically cool.
meh
some nice guitar work, but not my cup of tea overall
Soya was listenable. The rest of the album I didn’t care for. Every song felt like forever, it was incredibly repetitive.
Meh
Good enough background. Never really found it hard to listen to - but never jumped out at me. Could be any of many.
Didn't mind this in the background, nice blues sound at times, but didn't really grab me.... Again, hard when you don't understand the language. Felt like it created a certain ambience though. 2.5, won't be rushing back
2.0 - Weak
This is a fine album but it really isn't music I would listen to.
well ... that wasn't horrible. It had some rough spots for me, almost stopped it, but I didn't - and made it through. It was okay playing in the background, but I'm not going to search for this to play again.
Need to listen to again.
Really not for me. It sounded too monotonous and repetitive. Part of the reason I love blues and roots music so much is because of the lyrics. I connect with the story telling. I think the fact that a don’t understand the language was a real impediment for enjoyment.
Not for me
Me pareció tremendamente repetitivo.
2.5
The emotional weight of this being this artist's last album and an African artist interpreting an art form created by Americans is novel, but it is not a feeling that endures for the length of the album. At the end of the day this a blues album that is fairly repetitive, even by blues albums standards. I don't think this album really needs to be on this list though I admit it was a discovery I had not heard before.
2.5 I appreciate the unique guitar playing and tunings, but not really anything I'd listen to again,
This one just isn’t for me. While I can hear the depth and cultural richness behind it, the music doesn’t resonate with me at all. It feels distant and fails to grab my interest. 2/5
Ambient, repetitive, inoffensive, unremarkable. I’d play it at a dinner party or wine night for people who think they’re worldly
some of the songs sound like they were written for breaking bad…
A little too repetitive. Very entrancing, but not a ton of substance.
01) Erdi - 6,0 02) Yer Bounda Fara - 6,0 03) Beto - 5,5 04) Savane - 6,0 05) Soya - 5,5 06) Penda Yoro - 5,5 07) Machengoidi - 5,0 08) Ledi Coumbe - 5,0 09) Hanana - 5,0 10) Soko Yhinka - 5,5 11) Gambari Didi - 5,0 12) Banga - 5,0 13) N'Jarou - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,42 (54/100) Current ranking: 557/639
This is an album and it came out during the year 2006, which means it can be included in later editions of this book. That seems to be the criteria and reasoning for including Savane. I preferred the other album by Toure in this book and honestly don't see a need for this one. It's his last album (because he passed away), so that's sad. This was very tedious for me. On my second listen, I found myself checking to see if we were towards the end and somehow the album was only halfway over every single time I looked. The musicianship is fine but if you want to listen to Toure, then choose his prior album in this book.
An album in French, so I had to turn to listening more on the instrumentals. Considering Ali did most of all of the main instruments, it is very impressive. I also found that this was released posthumously just a couple months after his passing. Was a nice background album during work!
I was ready to give this 1 star after the first song, but this album slowly hypnotized me. This mix of blues and African music works much better than I’d expect. This isn’t something I’m going to regularly come back to, but appreciate the introduction to a unique sound that I wouldn’t have otherwise listened to. I didn’t listen enough times through to establish favorite tracks.
Not for me
I can tell this guy was insanely talented, but it just felt too long
Interesting melodies, but no clue what this guy is singing about.
Not really my thing. I guess it's a nice swan song for such a huge name in African music.
2/5
Naaaaah ... sorry, this kind of world music is not for me. 2/5
Not for me.
This will be my second Ali Farka Touré album to review, and also my last album from the year 2006 to review. I thought Ali Farka Touré’s album with Ry Cooder was fine, but I didn’t think there was anything particularly noteworthy about it. I expect to feel the same way about this album from him, but I’m hoping that maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised! Unfortunately, I was unpleasantly surprised by this album. Yes, the guitar playing was really good, and the album was pleasant to listen to. However, it was incredibly boring. The songs were just the same melodies repeated over and over again, and there wasn’t a lot of variation in sound from song to song. Some songs would start off strong with a nice melody that I enjoyed, but then nothing of interest would happen the rest of the song. The songs themselves were too long for what they were, and the album itself was too long for what it was as well. There’s some nice guitar playing on this album, but I just didn’t find it very interesting.
The sort of album a certain type of person buys to show how intellectual they are.
I thought this would be fun. Kind of repetitive and grading after a while. its ok
Okayish
Not cup of tea some good riffs tho.
Desert blues are much different from American blues
A good vibe, and a nice change-up from “the usual” in this 1001 albums list. I probably won’t be revisiting, though, unless I really want to impress a friend.
Interesting. Decent passive listening, quite annoying active listen.
Harmless enough but a lot of the songs didnt seem to go anywhere (obviously this is based on my inability to understand the lyrics). Really enjoyed the title track and definitely heard a lot less through this process.
I liked the opportunity to listen to an artist I have never heard of before and, whilst I didn’t hate it, it just wasn’t for me.
Talented but not really for me
Listened Before? N Weird stuff. Interesting fusion but not really my thing. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Savane
Listen to the first song and you have heard the entire album. It’s not bad but it’s extremely repetitive throughout. 3/10
Semmosta etnovingutusta. Vähä oli erikoista pidemmän päälle
I mean, it's OK
Interesting kinda world blues but I'm not actually sure what the hell is going on. I enjoyed elements of each song and I think I would tell people I like it to give them the impression I'm smart and know what I'm talking about....but between friends I'm not really sure I do get it, and I'm an idiot who has no idea what's going on
This did nothing for me. Maybe if I understood the lyrics it would.
Quite mellow at times, other times a bit too repetitive. I like this kind of music but I'm not sure if this is the best example of it.
This sounds like the type of thing that would be playing at a restaurant that served some kind of weird exotic food that I never tried before and in the end it would have served as an interesting experience but it wasn't something that I enjoyed very much and wouldn't try again. The same goes for this music.
This is fine. It's different and a good exposure to some international (West African) music. The guitar playing is cool but I think there are other examples (Mdou Moctar) that I would turn to first if I was in the mood for this genre. A bit of a long album. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
Not for me
Simultaneously interesting and boring....
I mean, this wasn't terrible but I'm also not sure what's so great about it. Really dragged at the end.
I want to like unfamiliar music, or at least be aware that some of my reticence is really just unfamiliarity and factor that into my assessment. But, at the end of the day, I found this very basic and repetitive in an unpleasing way. Add to that the tone of whatever instrument was being plucked with the microphone right up against the fretboard ... was that a guitar? The tone was difficult to endure. So, trying to tread with grace. But really, I didn't dig this at all.
The instrumentation was really interesting but I don’t think it’s something I’d come back to ultimately
Unfortunately didn’t finish this album, the blues were good but not much else to say, perhaps I should’ve given it a better chance. 5/10.
Ay chihuahua that was a snoozefest
Mostly boring and repetitive 2.2
It was a cool ambiance, loved the blues sounds. But it was hard to really appreciate or connect to without understanding anything being sung, I’m sure if I did it’d be a higher rating so this is just based on my listening experience. My favorite was N’jarou. Unfortunately I don’t see myself ever coming back to this though.
I have so little precedent for this type of music. I genuinely didn’t k ow what I was supposed to be listening for and what he did well or poorly. A thoroughly confusing experience.
"The King of the desert 'blues' singers".
I really want to get into a non-English album on this list, but I still haven't been able to do it. I don't mind listening to this, but nothing sticks even as it's playing. There was cool instrumentation on this, and I didn't mind the singing. I struggled to connect with it, ultimately.
I enjoyed it as background
Not really my kind of music
It's alright, not a whole lot happens though
This is an interesting listen and exposure to world music is very important. However, I didn’t really vibe with this, even though I do believe it deserves a spot here.
You know, kinda weird. Not really my thing. Better than classical….that’s something I guess.
I was excited to hear another Ali Farka Touré album. However, I didn't enjoy this as much as I did the last one. I think the addition of Ry Cooder on the last made it a little more entry level for me.
This seems like something I'd like, but I couldn't get into this.
That was interesting. Not really my kind of music, but not bad.
I couldn't get on this one's level
Same thing as last Ali Farka Toure review. Fine enough, but certainly not very engaging.
Not bad per se, just really not my jam. Songs felt a little too repetitive and way too long for what it is. High 2.
1.92
Okay I guess!
Would enjoy this in the background. Musically it was interesting. But the blues are hard to “get into” when you have no clue what is being said lyrically.
Sure. OK. I found myself wishing this album was shorter. Toss the filler and he'd have a solid album.
I usually like this type of album and the summer ambience it creates but this time it felt like something was missing. Not much progression or change through the songs, especially the longer ones. Highlights: Yer Bounda Fara
Whack
I was hoping for the blues like Keb Mo or Taj Mahal, but this was the blues with a middle eastern accent. I need to be able to understand the lyrics as well, so this one just didn’t do it for me. Doesn’t really seem fair to rate this one, but I will give a 2 since I am really rating it for my own reference.
Erdi - 6/10 very repetitive Yer Bounda Fara - 7/10 fun Beto - 5/10 Savane - 6/10 i dont wanna listen to this anymore im giving up already
the only thing i could think about during this listen is that it's basically the soundtrack of a movie set somewhere in africa(never a specific country), the main character is sent there for work but ends up moving there cuz it's "simpler and more peaceful, unlike the busy streets of nyc"
This was so so SO repetitive. Not my favorite.
Es como india o africana ... cansina. No me ha gustado. Antes le puse un 3. Ahora un 2.
this is quintessential "never would have listened to this before this challenge" kind of album and to be frank I probably never will again but im glad I know it exists
Another one of Toure's albums. Too long and repetitive for my liking. I can tell theres a good voice and some decent licks lurking beneath but it just dragged on again. Shame really. Didnt hate it but definitely fell on the scoring due to the length and repetitiveness. I wont be coming back to this one.
‘Talking Timbuktu’ is Ali Farka Touré’s other album in the book, and ‘Savane’ is very similar, if not the same in tone and scope to that. If you didn’t like ‘Talking Timbuktu’, or thought it was very repetitive, then you won’t like this. It’s more of the same, and after having listened to 500+ albums as part of this challenge, I’m starting to have less patience and good will. I’m happy for Ali Farka Touré to have been featured, but we didn’t need two albums from him that are essentially the same. In this instance, one was more than enough.
Based on the description, I was expecting to like this more than I did. It did kind of grow on me though, but only to a point. I’m still not into the Indian-sounding stuff, but I like the bluesier parts. Unfortunately, the Indian-sounding stuff came to dominate the album.
Some cool stuff, but I can't pretend like I'm coming back to this one. Was a good listen, a little slow at time Will I listen to again: 0%
I did not use a private session for Spotify. Had no idea of what I was getting into, though it did seem possible to judge a album by it's cover. Jazzy and acoustic, had no idea what he was singing about. I don't know why I would ever put this on, nothing against it, though.
African music started off sounding OK, but got really repetitive and wore out its welcome. It could have used some percussion to keep me interested.
Boring. If it was on in the background I wouldn't mind, but wouldn't seek it out
This feels like something I’m supposed to like, but I don’t. Definitely something I’m glad I’ve listened to, but it’s not for me. Savane
I can see quite a lot of potential in Savane, unfortunately it is bogged down by quite a few issues. First, the good, Ali's voice actually fit very well with the songs and i can see quite a few cool music ideas in place which could have been good if the album didn't suffer from these three issues. One, The album's composition is very messy and feels more like random sounds at random times rather than proper, coherent music. Two, The album is a fairly long one at 58 minutes which would be okay if it weren't for this last issue. Three, The songs sound too similar to each other, I had this problem with quite a few albums on this project but with messy composition and a long length, this issue is really brought out in the open. There is a good album hiding inside this one, its just too bad that these issues prevent it from coming out. Best Song: Beto Worst Song: Savane
133/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
Didn't hate it. Didn't love it.
Savane by Ali Farka Touré is a captivating journey into the heart of traditional Malian music, beautifully merging ancient sounds with subtle modern touches. Touré's guitar work stands out, offering intricate and expressive melodies that showcase his exceptional talent. The album's production is impeccable, highlighting the natural beauty of each instrument. Vocals are delivered with heartfelt sincerity, adding an emotional depth to the piece. Savane manages to be both profound and accessible, a testament to Touré's skill and creativity. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 2 STAND OUT TRACK - Penda Yoro
Guitar play and production is excellent, but the songs doesnt do anything for me
Was a very interesting sound considering I don’t think I’ve heard African Blues before. That said. Except for a few tracks, I couldn’t get into it that much. 2.4
Background music only
Not my thing
I gave it a chance but overall I wasn't sitting back and nodding my head, it was more tilting my head and attempting to wrap it around the meandering tinny sounding guitar. There are definitely some enjoyable moments which is why I didn't give it a 1, but overall it isn't my favorite.
unfortunately this ones not it kinda rate it at times 2.4/5
I very much enjoy the guitar work. Don't really understand the lyrics, but it sounds mournful, soulful.
That's not my taste in musik.
Worthy. Dull. (It’s me, not you.)
Can see it having its fans but just not for me 2.5*
Some interesting sounds. But don’t understand the language. Limited snap.
1.5/5
It's not bad, it's just not my thing; with a lot of repetition in the music/sound.
Not one that really resonated with me
First listen Saved 3/13 Top track: Savane
New album for me, would not be my first choice for an AFT album.
de unaa. 6/10
I didn’t have much to say other than the percussion was nice and it all blended together. So much so that the album restarted and it took me a couple songs to realize (2.5/5)
Idc
Miellyttäviä variaatioita hyvästä riffistä.
Nice enough.... But boring
Not my type of music. But I can kinda appreciate it.
The King of the desert blues singers huh? Should be pretty cool. meh, lost interest pretty quickly. Sorry hommie. 2 stars.
NIce live sound and quite relaxing, but not my cup of tea.
Interesting to listen to the 'etymology' of the blues and hear a Senegalese version. Not so keen on the music. It's all a bit basic. I prefer my music more complex in terms of instrumentation and song structure x
Nice to hear different sounds and instruments, but a little bit too repetitive for me. It feels like a long song with pauses between verses, which for some I guess could be a nice thing, but it’s not my cup of tea
Ok. Not great
I’m sure it was very influential it just didn’t hold my attention
2 - I'm really not a blues guy, so I can't really get into it.
I'm sure that to people familiar with this style of music this is an outstanding album. To me, as someone with minimal experience of this style of music, I found it very difficult to get into. The tracks all sounded very similar, so much so it felt like one long track. I made it the whole way through and can appreciate there is considerable musical ability on show. This all leads to my bog standard award of "my ears weren't bleeding, I didn't want to kill myself, and I made it all the way through the album" 2 stars!
Some bits would be good, but overall not my thing
Ok as background but forgettable
I don't get it. Where is the groove that I've always heard with desert blues?
Very folky, but also like a genre I’d never heard before. Also kind of like stereotypical pub music
Call it a cultural blind spot, but I find it a little hard to focus on this record, even though it kind of works as "background music". Seems to me that the Ali Farka Touré LP recorded and co-signed with Ry Cooder--also in Dimery's book--is more accessible to my admittedly untrained ear than *Savane*. Untrained ear for traditional Malian music, at least... I can spot a lot of arrangements inspired by North American blues, for instance, just as I spotted them in that other album. But I would lie if I said those arrangements bring me closer to the emotions Touré probably conveys to his usual listeners. If anything, I think they even muddle the picture this time around... I've said it before, but maybe including full-length releases coming from outside of the American-European-Australian sphere does a disservice to everyone. Fans of "global sounds" (and their modern pop offshoots) will always think there's not enough room for their favorite recordings. And rock, rap and electronic music buffs might consider that this fistful of "world music" records are taking up critical spots for other favorite albums of theirs. So aside from such a list, you could have a 1001 best recordings list dedicated to the African continent, South and Central Americas, and Asia and Oceania. Plus, maybe, several shorter lists one for "classical" and traditional music from each continent. Of course doing this could attract its own share of criticism. But there would be a far more "equal" representation of music from all over the world. Because the maths are unavoidable here: after all, 1001 is a finite number, is it not? Hard to grade this record, as a consequence. I will give it a tentative 2/5 mark, translating to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes. (5 + 2) Number of albums left to review: 316 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 307 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 167 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many other records are more important to me): 223 (oncluding this one)
It was okay. I dig the guitar but some of it just kind of droned on. The self titled song was good
2/5
Good composition of music and emotion for the African style.
SOme interesting beats but at other times somewhat a complete racket. Reckon you have to be into this genre to appreciate
Wasn't feeling it.
Es como india o africana ... cansina. No me ha gustado. Antes le puse un 3. Ahora un 2.
It's fine but I wouldn't mind more of a tune.
Not my jam
Hmm…
Had its moments, but definitely not my thing
Not for me
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: it wasn’t bad but not something I’d listen to again Favourite song: didn’t have one
downloaded savane, a pleasant switch up. not my style but was peaceful to paint to
Feeling ill-equipped to offer highly-intelligent feedback on this album. It's definitely a curiosity that I enjoyed listening to for the first 20 mins. However, the album became long soonafter the 20 min. mark. Really thankful for the exposure, but seems out of place on this list.
For a jazz album, this one was pretty unremarkable.
Interesting mashup of blues and middle eastern music. Not a fan of middle eastern music but it is well made.
Ok
The same African mumbling with instrumental improv throughout the album. It sounds like it has been recorded in one go without preparation (would be cool if it really was though).
Reminded me a little of irish music. Wasn't a huge fan.
If I was being tongue in cheek, I would say something like 'no wonder middle Eastern folk are angry all the time..their music sucks'. Monotonous
2 A rather uninspired jam session, but quite enjoyable nontheless.
Mielenkiinto loppu toisen biisin kohdalla. Kuuntelin silti läpi enkä kokenut valaistumista. Ei jatkoon.
Paikoin ihan jees, mut turhan paljon samanlaista ”desert blues”-renkutusta ja sanatkin luonnollisesti meni ohi, ku ei ollu ihan omalla äidinkielellä
As much as I wish this list had more World music, this album just didn't do anything for me. A very chill album. Too chill. Boringly chill.
Idk, I kinda feel bad giving this one such a low score, it's a posthumous release from an icon in west African music and I respect that...but I just do not vibe with the music at all. Album has exactly one sound that it never deviates from, the song structures and instrumentation aren't interesting, and at an hour long it was really a slog to get through. Maybe some of his other albums would do me better, but I did not like this.
Monotonous
African Blues made by a dying artist. I was into it at first but it slowly got a little boring as it went on. Still, I did not dislike it and can recommend if you're into this kind of music. 2.5
Really good blues, but it’s not always my favourite genre
This is some music I have not really heard anything like before. It really probably shouldn't play a factor in my review, but it does make it very difficult for me to vibe with and like an album when I simply don't understand the lyrics. The first few songs on the album had me thinking that maybe I'd enjoy it just for the tunes because I thought a couple of those early tracks were jamming a bit! As the album kept going, though, it was a lot of the same stuff, and none of it was really doing much for me anymore. I can see an appeal here for sure! I enjoyed hearing something new, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed the album overall.
2.5 Impressive guitar work, and reminiscent of Blackstar in that it was written and recorded by an artist knowing that his last days were upon him. Supposedly Touré pioneered the genre of music heard here, referred to as desert blues, which is definitely what I would consider an apt label for what I heard - a little drier and more chaotic than your normal blues, keeping you on your toes while you listen. Unfortunately, all of that charm seems to run out somewhere about halfway through this album and it’s a long journey to the end from there. Didn’t dislike anything I heard here, but it was a bit long and didn’t give me much to grab onto (I think it’s in French? Couldn’t find confirmation, but that’s the official language of his native country, Mali). Hesitant to give another 2.5 since I feel like I’ve been handing out a lot of those lately, but really feel like we’re in a string of “meh” albums. While not one of my favorites, I guess Matthew McConaughey is a big fan. Alright, alright, alright.
Not sure if I'd put this one on my list, certainly unique, but I skipped a few and didn't really connect to any of them.
Grating
I knew I wouldn't like this, but time flew by really fast and I didn't hate it.
2.5
african country? music wasn't the vibe
It didn't end up being as bad as it started and did sink into the background quiet nicely
didnt hate it but not really my thing
Låter afrikanskt!
It's alright in places, like Soya and Machengoidi are nice to listen to, and listening to anything blues-influenced is usually decent, but this mostly misses the spot for me.
Dinner party / background music for me, Clive. It's not unpleasant to listen to, but it's pretty stripped back to focus on the vocals - the singing is fine but unremarkable, and other than the odd phrase in French I can get, I don't understand them. Makes this album very difficult to appreciate for me, I think. 2/5.
I really wish I liked albums like this more than I do, but it is really difficult to relate to them, especially when it's the blues. I loved the instrumentation on N'jarou, though, so that's my favorite track
I listened and learned.
Not really my jam, but I get it. 2-3 stars, some interesting sounds and no reason to turn off the album but also wouldn't seek it out.
Interesting but not really my thing.
Interesting album but I didn’t really enjoy it. It felt like background music to whatever I was currently doing.
Nice guitar performance, but overall to similar across the entire album for my taste
Really not my thing. Musically accomplished, but just doesn’t float my boat.
Meh
Some nice groovy beats
I don't care for the blues, and this album of African blues isn't making a good case for itself.
Didn’t click
peculiar, um bom som de fundo
Very cool, but definitely seemed to drag a bit. I will probably revisit, but it's lower on my priority list than some of the other stuff. Standouts: Skipping again because this album was kind of "an experience."
I'm sure this is someone's jam but it sure ain't mine...
There are individual parts of the music I like, but not the way it's all put t9gether. I wish I liked it more, because it sure as hell is intwresting... I just don't wanna listen to it.
It made for some nice background music, but in many ways it just sounded like the same song over and over. It probably didn't help that I also had no idea what he was saying. I'm sure it's really good, but I didn't need to hear it before I die.
Savane is the final solo African Blues album by Malian musician Ali Farka Toure - released to critical acclaim 4 months after he passed from cancer. There's not much other information about this album, but it was cool seeing a different style of blues music - one that is spiced up with African instruments and style. I believe if I was from Africa myself, then I would find this album a lot more interesting. However, I can still appreciate the difference from Western music.
Actually started well but I really struggled with the last half hour.
Drags on too much, would've been a 3 otherwise
without knowing the lyrics, can feel the blues in the instruments, (perhaps the oud)
Not your typical Afropop, but still very similar sounding throughout the album. Nothing special. 2.5/5
Not my type of music. It wasn't really bad, it just didn't really jump out at me. It started to sound repetitious after a few songs.
Repetitive, recalls John Lee Hooker a tiny bit. I like lots too of blues and I like lots of afrobeat, but did not enjoy this.
I feel like I’ve been tortured by the child of country music and the music I was surrounded by as a child.
African rock. Slow. Drones on
I never know how to review these foreign language world albums. Guitar work was solid.
First listen.
Ritmos africanos y étnicos. Sin más. No destaca especialmente. Ritmos suaves y acompasados. No es de mi gusto
Not my vibe.
Yes, all very good and fine, but really not my kind of thing. All sound very samey
Some very nice chill vibes, I just found it a bit lukewarm and couldn't get into it.
It's an interesting take on some classic blues, but I have to admit I zoned out quite hard a few times. Just didn't super interest me. Favorite track: "Beto"
Interesting enough as background music, but not something I’d choose to listen to
Not my type of music.
Didn't like it that much
Es como india o africana ... cansina. No me ha gustado. Antes le puse un 3. Ahora un 2.
“It was released to high critical acclaim.”
Pretty chill but not a bop.
I couldn't get into it. Not bad, just not for me.
Not my thing
Has some influences of Robert Johnson, only 90 years later. Sound a bit dull, sloppy and some instruments are out of tune. And boy, I do miss the percussion.
A 2.5... ok enough for a light listen. I liked the depth of the music, in both the different instruments as well as the accents of blues, Indian, Caribbean, Spanish etc... Most of the songs in themselves were repetitive and sometimes too long. Plus not being able to take away anything lyrically and the spoken/chanting vocals knock it down for me. And was generally kinda over it by the end.
Ok, I’ll just going to say it, it sounds like a bunch of guys having a music session together rather than a actual album. I mean maybe that’s the intention I dunno but with the exception of the album title track they all just passed me by. I like to think I’m pretty diverse and open minded with my music tastes but after a week of doing these reviews it appears that I’m not, so there’s that.
I will admit to this one being a DNF. But that's not because it's bad music - it definitely isn't. But blues isn't generally my genre as it's too slow and steady. It gets 2 because I love the harmonisation between the voices and instruments on the tracks I did listen to.
Anti perfectionist approach to this album, I like it already. Although, opening track began to feel like a loop towards the end. Stronger vocals presence in the 2nd track. But not too compelling.... A different variation in the 3rd track but after a few seconds it shows that this song is just like the first two in terms of instrumentals. Not my type of album. Needs more variation for me. 2 stars.
Coming deep out of left field (Mali to be exact), this album has a lot of grizzled soul. Songs tend to be overly long and overstay their welcome with little variation to justify their length. This ultimately becomes an exercise in how much one can "appreciate" world music in one sitting, which isn't very long for me.
2/5
Chill blues
Throw in a fuzz pedal and drop that guitar down to B tuning and this could be a pretty rad drone metal record. As is, not something I’ll likely listen to again but I love how clean and clear the production is. Dude looks pretty cool on the cover there. I want that chair.
Not super interesting
Not for me
some nice rhythms, but overall wasn't for me
Not for me
I wanted to like this more, but not really for me.
Just not my thing
Background music for coffee shops.
Nej. Inte min grej.
Not my thing.
No Top Picks
Very groovy, I love blues music. I really like the guitar work. Fav song is ‘Soya’.
With all due respect to this artist, I cant listen to this album. Just out of my preference.
Why not any gud albums
not for me sorry
Ate
Nich meins.
12 - Ali Farka Toure - Savane - Rating = 1 Have never heard of this guy or this record. The start of the first song and the mash of fiddle and acoustic guitar and the African-like chanting coming in sort of noodling… harmonica… almost a tune-up song. This is not grabbing me. Softer but the Indian/African chanting is a no for me. The music behind is inoffensive enough… but the vocal… Guitar noodle to start… sax? There’s the chanting coming in… the title track is slow… not interesting. Overall this is just too weird for me to like it. This is just a sound/album I would never listen to or consider… I mean I’m listening because I want to play the game… but this is just not for me.
