great album

Thought this would be smoke on the water and a bunch of filler but it was all solid

Warm, fat, fuzzy guitar sounds with blues-based guitar and organ leads.

Classic

That was pretty sick. Wish the sound was a little bit heavier but otherwise pretty unimpeachable hard rock. Best song: Smoke on the Water

Some classics in here. Highway Star opener is great. "Foundational" rock here. Some of it sounds a bit cliché with a modern ear, but this was where the cliché began.

Crazy Rhodes piano, jammin stuff, if a little sedentary at times

First time listening to a full album from Machine Head. I liked this one a lot. Solid album. Will listen to it again.

straight jams

Space truckin, highway star, when a blind man cries and last but not least smoke on the water are such good songs. The other ones are just ok. So nearly 5 stars.

Pretty good album loved the instrumentals got me through the day

i liked this a lot more than i thought i would.

Classic hardrock with epic guitars and vocals!

Nice album!

Beautiful rock album which some amazing highlights

I like it! No nonsense

way better than I expected, some bangers for sure

As good as the hard rock genre gets. Stick to side 1

Wow so many flashbacks to Simpsons episodes while listening to this album. The raw guitar line of Smoke on the Water is unforgettable. Deep purple. Can't go wrong with this one.

It’s funny that’s smoke on the water is the most well known song off this album, it’s probably the worst track on here. Well, Lazy is worse, but this record still rips. I love Deep Purple

Kicks ass. Highway star is one of the best rock tracks ever idgaf

Surprised by how much this rocked. Some duds, but highwaystar really make everything worth it

This is a very good classic rock album. A couple of recognizable songs with some extremely recognizable riffs. A great example of the genre. 4 out of 5.

Perfectly sleazy and has that iconic guitar tune throughout. Good album through and through.

Heisssssse Gitarrensoli, psychedelisch Der Inbegriff von Hatd Rock schätze ich Sehr konsistentes Album Toller letzter Song

Very very good, classic

pretty goddarn cool, the organ solos rip, and the compositions flow nicely with punchy segways

I can't believe how much I enjoyed an album that has a song called "Space Truckin'". Genuinely great metal with psychedelic and funk influences.

Solid solid vibe. I like how it's rocking but not excessively hard. "Highway Star" was a fun one. The guitar riff in "Smoke On the Water" is of course unmatched. Low key enjoyed "Space Truckin'" quite a bit it's a solid closer.

Gonna fall into the couch on some deep purple kush

Smoke out the water

Millennials know that Deep Purple rocks they were the first song in Guitar Hero 3 AND the intro to Rockband

Smonk on the water

Standard rock band executed very well. Good to listen to but hard to stand out as an album other than Smoke on the Water obviously

Damn good solid all the way through

Good classics on this one.

- Only ever heard Smoke on the Water before - I feel like I've had a lot of classic rock lately, so I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this one - Some really good tracks, especially Lazy - Fav songs: Lazy, Space Truckin', Highway Star

Very solid album front to back. Highway star all the way to Space Truckin' was nonstop 70s dad rock. I find that the lyricism is like that cheesy late 60's early 70s "IM GONNA TAKE MY TRUCK TO SPACE FUCK YEAH" kind of writing which I don't really find that interesting because I'm not of that era. The musicality is on point though. Solid 4

Much better than the live album I had a couple of weeks ago with a 7 minute long Smoke On The Water. This is the kind of music I grew up and I’ll always love it.

super lazy review today but i like this album a lot. i've never been a fan of super long guitar solos but other than that yes good

3.5/5 Foundational early metal Highway Star best track Maybe I'm a Leo always gets a relisten

Pretty dumb but also really great. Here is one where I was definitely more interested in the deeper cuts. Maybe I'm a Leo has a great groove and I like how Pictures of Home showcases each musician. The Sword are fans for sure (and so is Koji Kondo). Overall, I was impressed by the level of musicianship and could tell they had a bit of fun. Ritchie Blackmore would go on to some great stuff with Dio a few years later.

Album #500 for me! Pity it's not a 5, but still pretty good. Highway Star is a classic. I think Smoke on the Water is the worst song, and is only famous because everyone can play the riff.

Highway star and smoke on the water on same album is real impressive

Great classic rock. The mixture of overdriven guitar and Hammond organ was a stroke of genius. Not a bad song on the whole album. Highly recommended!

After nearly forty years, I finally dove into the album that surrounds that single string riff I learned in 7th grade. It sits somewhere between the Doors and Judas Priest, but knows exactly in which direction it's facing. For its not quite forty minute runtime, it seems like they mostly let the drummer play through while the band starts and stops and starts again. I say this was the right call.

love machine head

Hard rock was perfected in the 70's. Everything after that was either something so different that it wasn't pure hard rock anymore, or it was derivative. You can sing your praises about Led Zeppelin or The Who, but for my money it was Deep Purple that had the genre on lock. Machine Head is dead proof that Deep Purple mastered hard rock. All you need is Highway Star, really. All the songs are still worth a listen, if you have the time. Now if you take these songs and hear them live (say, in Japan), then you get what is effectively the epitome of rock performance.

Great drumming. Nice keyboards. Heavy, but with swing and swagger combined. I like.

Good album, I've previously heard and enjoyed smoke on the water and it was nice to hear more of their songs.

Hardrock vom feinsten.

That's what "classic rock" means

Deep Purple were already a respected name in the burgeoning genre of heavy metal, so them taking things to the next level with their essential Machine Head was not only fitting but inevitable. While some of the most revered songs of their discography garners the majority of the attention, it's the others that are worth giving a further look, most notably Never Before, Pictures of Home, the first half of Lazy and the closer Space Truckin'. Machine Head has proven to weave a long leash in terms of relevance and longevity within their genre in the coming decades and that's all due to the contributions of everyone in the band. Favorites: Highway Star, Pictures of Home, Never Before, Smoke on the Water, Space Truckin'.

Nice bit of old school rock

Pretty great!

Listened to this one before. Highway Star, Smoke on the water and Pictures of home are really good songs. I think everyone's heard Smoke on the Water. It's a good album and certainly a classic. I do think Deep Purple in rock is better though. This one is missing the energy of Deep Purple in rock that really drives it home.

I’m tired of Smoke On The Water, but Highway Star reminds me of Rock Band, and some of the organ solos tickled my fancy. Better album than I was expecting!

4.5 Classic

Classic

For whatever reason I enjoyed this album so much more than Deep Purple in Rock. Machine Head definitely has more memorable songs and sounds exactly how you expect it to if you are familiar with “Smoke on the Water.”

I love this album and my own personal opinion of it is a 5/5, but I realize that this isn’t fair. The instrumentation on this record is perfect and I will die on that hill. The structure stays interesting and original. There’s nothing wrong with the lyrics or production either. These songs are all fun to listen to. They expanded on the genre, maybe not by much, but they did some experimenting and had fun with it while also making every track enjoyable. My issues are that there isn’t a ton of range here. All exciting, but not very different. I also, don’t think the vocals are on par with the playing. They’re alright, but occasionally fail to achieve the gravitas I imagine the band is going for. No huge complaints, just can’t give it a perfect score. 4/5

Some old classics in there. Not so sure about the Re-Mastering.

Solid early '70s guitar/Hammond organ rock. "Smoke on the Water" remains iconic, and "Space Truckin'" is awesome as always.

I did some rockin’ today, but the tunes don’t exactly speak to my soul.

0-3-5! I've been very surprised at how imaginative this record has been to listen to. I think most people don't bother giving deep purple a chance nowadays given how amateurish they consider smoke on the water. But man, this record slaps! I feel it pulling influence from of led zeppelins early work and quite a lot from black sabbath. Whether it be writing styles or production choices, its kind of hard to tell. The drumming is fantastic and so far ahead of its time. Guitars sound fluid and locked into every song so neatly, and the lyricism and vocals are wonderful. Can't wait to listen to this with the headphones on

Awesome album! Favorite Track: Highway Star

classic hard rock

good album! dont really have much extraordinary or bad to say about it, 7 or 8/10 all around

I enjoyed it. Didn't overstay it's welcome and you can't beat smoke on the water

M 3 C 5

Not bad. I'd listen to it again

Very fun listen! Honestly, Smoke on the Water was one of the lesser tracks imo. Thoroughly enjoyed Highway Star. Interesting to hear the use of distortion and reverb with some of the bluesier riffs, knowing where this album falls in the timeline and history of rock. Curious if the title has anything to do with the increased use of modulatory effects pedals

Liked it. Didn’t realize these were the smoke on the water guys. Kind of gives Motörhead vibes? Also really liked when a blind man cries. 7/10? Solid but feel like I’ve heard similar bands

This album was consistent with the band name as it gave deep purple hues and vibes (connection with the cosmos if trying to be technical with color frequency). The Color of magicians and wizards to be fun. That is to say with all of these so far, I haven’t heard any of their other music but I would listen to them willingly and knowingly. Highway star scratched the brain itch and I really liked. My favorite was Pictures of Home. Simple visual for this album (bringing in the purple and cosmos) Is just a band playing on a floating stage in space (distant galaxies in background and streams of purple hues mixed with some yellows and reds in front - also coming from the chords they’re hitting. Pulses of vibration over the whole field of vision) Good Vibe

Though only seven songs long, Machine Head displays a satisfying cross section of early seventies rock. With two classics and an ensemble of four- to seven-minute tracks, the album does not disappoint. Unfortunately I now associate “Highway Star” with an overzealous Griff’s regular who, each and every Friday karaoke night, thought it would be a good idea to “sing” the song through 12 PBRs and a Hawaiian shirt as unfashionable as any I own. Had our nameless vocalist replicated the multiple guitar solos, I could forgive him, but the air guitar must not have been tuned right. Regardless, it’s a good song and a great way to begin the album. A monkey with a typewriter has a better shot at writing a perfect copy of Hamlet than I have at playing a Scott Joplin rag on the piano, but the signature chords of “Smoke on the Water” are apparently simple enough to be replicated by a severely piano-challenged child like I was. Regardless, it’s the band’s most iconic track for a reason. And while it may chronicle a gathering of rock royalty in Switzerland, I prefer to think it’s about the mishaps of a redneck firework shooting spree over a sorry excuse for a lake holding raw sewage from half of Arkansas. To each their own, I guess. The album digs deeper than these two tracks, though. Look down at your feet while listening to “Maybe I’m a Leo,” and you may find them tapping on their own accord. During “Pictures of Home” you may find yourself running in place, and you’ll be fine with that. Around the three-minute mark, I felt like I was being flung around a pinball machine by a roadrunner on crack. Meep meep motherfucker. “Lazy” is not lazy at all, with electric blues harking back to John Lee Hooker and foreshadowing Stevie Ray Vaughan. “Space Truckin” is a bit repetitive, but it did get me jazzed up. Maybe I shouldn’t have listened to this album before bed. Oops.

Really enjoyed this, lots of songs I knew, but I've never actually listened to the album before.

Really fun!

Pure classic rock. The opener and closer are clunky but the rest is a blast. Fun history behind the album too.

Very good album. Short, but awesome.

I own this one on vinyl.

bangers alle sammen 4.5

Cat: the only song I’ve ever heard from them is the first track Highway Star, and holy smokes does it rip! Makes me wonder why I never dug deeper. They groove harrrrrrd. Oh yeah, and smoke on the water. They’re all really great musicians. Not every song hits, but they are great! AJ: awesome time. Just rock and roll fun. Thought highway star was Judas Priest my whole life. They crush.

A great classic full of memorable songs and other interesting tracks.

It has a song called Space Truckin'

Four big hits on an eight track album. 'Highway Star', 'Smoke On The Water' (cool story), and 'Space Truckin''. 'Lazy' is a cool 12 bar blues with an awesome Hammond Organ intro.

A highlight of the early heavy metal scene. It's a lot of improvisation. With how much the music keeps shifting, it's a bit of a challenging listen. But with only 7 tracks, and each has something distinct about them, it's fairly digestible with plenty of memorable and enjoyable moments. "Highway Star" is one of their most famous songs, and features a killer guitar solo and catchy loud vocals. "Maybe I'm a Leo" is a bluesy jam song featuring cool keyboard and guitar moments with a groovy bassline. "Pictures of Home" is an acid rock track, probably the least memorable here but most similar to the doomy sound of contemporary Black Sabbath. "Never Before" has that distinct cheesy hard pop rock sound of the 70s you'd find in contemporaries like Bad Company or the million forgettable one-hit wonders, with some Beatlesesque power chords and harmonic vocals. It's the most optimistic track yet still interesting due to the proggy nature of the constantly changing melody and surprise parts. "Smoke on the Water" is one of the most recognizable rock songs in history, and it deserves this recognition. It's a classic: catchy, memorable, groovy, and impressive. "Lazy" is another bluesy jam track, mostly consisting of what feels like an improvised instrumental session, mostly showcasing guitar feats. "Space Truckin" is a bit cheesy but grew on me over time. Really awesome deep distorted guitar sound and studio mixing.

Solid 70s blues inspired hard rock. Kind of hits a lull in the middle and, as a guitarist, I've heard "Smoke On the Water" enough to fill several lifetimes. Still, it's impossible to deny how hard some of these tracks rip. Favorite tracks: "Highway Star", "Maybe I'm a Leo", "Space Truckin'"

some classics on here, pretty nice

a good album overshadowed by it's reputation for one of the most iconic riffs of all time

Dad rock as hell, it's opening track is great, then there's a few tracks of fluff, then from smoke on the water onwards its really solid, the ending track when a blind man cries was a real shock

Really enjoyed. Swampy, psychadelicy sound holds up and extremely well produced. Hesitate to give a four but I think it’s like 3.9

Clasico del rock...

Smoke On the Water is overplayed, but the album as a whole was pretty good. A nice surprise after Cheap Trick. No offense Cheap Trick. Actually, some offense.

Second half of the album was really bombastic.

Enjoyed that. Wasn't sure I would as not all classic rock does it for me. Highway star, pictures of home and smoke on the water were all great. Got a little tired of it towards the end but overall really good

Enjoyed listening to this. Love the falsetto vocals, driving guitar riffs, and the drum fills. A short, but sweet album. Favorite songs: Never Before, Smoke on the Water, and Space Truckin’.

Oops gonna do Janis and Purple on this one, accidental publish on last one. Pearl- JJ Great range of tracks, immense vocal performance, so much poured into each track. Purely personal taste but at times I found the vocals a little much, although when I decided to surrender to them there was an undeniable power and felt quite moved. Fav track: Get in while you can 4/5 Machine Head- DP Indulgent guitar solos and the performative rock from this era is so far from my jam, but quite enjoyed this. Atleast the solos in this felt consistent with the album and had purpose. Good range of tracks, particularly enjoyed the moodier numbers. Fav track: When a Blind man cries 3.5/5

Another classic album, with their established anthem, Smoke on the Water. 50 years on and their sound is still awesome!

Superb

Highway Star is the best Deep Purple song and I won't hear otherwise

F’ing METAL

It’s nothing to write home about, but it gets bumped to a four for having some fantastic guitar and keyboard tone and for being so concise.

3.5 Duh duh duh, dun dun, duh duh, dun dun dun, dun, duh a

Honestly, it's basic hard rock with mid songwriting, but it's just so concise with some really classic songs on it, so I really enjoyed it.

I was a bit of a metal fan as a kid and so this was a rush of memory. I enjoyed it. Metal that is closer to rock.

I like stoner rock. I like prog rock. So it stands to reason that I like Machine Head.

Erittäin toimiva. Klassikkokamaa

Second half of the album is much better than the first, including the mighty 'Smoke on the Water'

One of the albums that shaped hard rock. Some good bangers here, definitely. Historic piece

Although I'm not a huge fan of guitar, this album was pretty cool. 70s vibes

When I think of the 70's rock, Deep Purple has never come to mind. I have AC/DC, the Led, the Doors... but this proves that other's were executing rock at another level. I'll be back to dive in once again.

Hell yeah- what a relief from Megadeath. This is good classic rock in my book. It goes hard with some sick solos but it's not gratuitous. It pushes the edges in the right way. I never new the story/lyrics to smoke on the water were so basic, lol. Did you read the Wikipedia entry? Listened to it twice

Classic Rock n Roll

Genres: Hard rock, heavy metal Formed: Run time: 8 songs, 41 min 5 sec Awesome album full of tracks we all know. My favourite song is “Smoke on the Water” which is probably the best-known track on the album. You could easily assume that this song was written after consuming an excess of drink and drugs, but no, they really did watch the Montreux Casino burn to the ground across lake Geneva. I loved the whole album, particularly “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin’”. My Rating: ****

A classic

"Highway Star", "Smoke On The Water" and "Lazy" are the highlights on this heavy and well made album. "Never Before" doesn't share in the main prize, and should've been switched for "When A Blind Man Cries" on the album, but even that songs can't diminish the fun in this funky hardrocking 70's classic. 4,5*

Stærkt album! Kunne især godt lide Pictures of Home…

Very cool. Much more going on than I was expecting. Fun and funky and ahead of it’s time.

Solidly good all the way through. There's some killer tracks on here. Highway Star is an absolute beast of a song \m/ There's some great guitar work on here, but I also particularly love the keys too. They seemed to fall out of favour at some point.

Why is this here? Didn't I already rate an album with live versions of all these songs?

Solid tracks that drone on a little too long. Best enjoyed in an elevated state.

Another huge, huge record! So many great moments on this album The classic guitarsolo's in Highway Star and Jon Lord's amazing organ work. And what about my beloved Drum hero Ian Paice? An absolute legend! The drum intro to Pictures Of Home deserves a huge shoutout as well as the solo on Space Truckin'! Roger Clover's funky bass solo. So much goodness in this record! Favorite lyrics: - Maybe I'm a Leo but I ain't a lion. - Somebody's shouting up at a mountain. Only my own words return. - She took my name, she took my body. And she threw away my soul. Key tracks: Highway Star, Pictures Of Home, Never Before, Smoke On The Water, Lazy, Space Truckin' 8,5 out of 10

Seminal

Great heavy metal album, I do recommend

Smoke on the Water

It's a good album to rock to. The long solos didn't put me off as much as I expected because they felt like they had a point, as opposed to just jamming out for time. And what a way to end the album - with "When a Blind Man Cries"

Smoke on the water. A fire in the sky. The album has a bit of the same problem that Blue Oyster Cult's "Agents of Fortune" does for me. The other songs on the album are ok to good, but then you get to the one song everyone knows, and that one song is way above the rest (except for maybe "Space Truckin' " but for me, it's just that that song is so silly.). I like Deep Purple a lot, from songs like "Hush" to "Perfect Strangers" to "Burn". If it wasn't for DP, metal and progressive rock probably would not be around today. But I don't pull this one album out. But regardless, there's always that one song that goes way above the rest on their albums. Can I rank the album because of the one song? Well, no. So we look at the other songs. And they're... ok. A lot of them they still play on the road, so there must be something to them. We start with "Highway Star" is pretty damn rocking. "Maybe I'm a Leo"... ? WTH. The next two songs again are pretty forgettable. Then we have "Space Truckin'", which is, as I said, is pretty goofy. "Lazy" is a pretty good instrumental opening, then "Smoke On The Water." So about half of the songs are forgettable, which is not good. Still, the strong songs do outweigh the weaker songs. So yeah, I'll give it a 4, but it's a weak 4.

Good, fun music 4

never heard it before but i liked it

Tried to buy a guitar on ebay while listening.

Pretty good rock. The guitar work is amazing. Some of the songs are a little too long like highway star didn’t need to be 6 minutes long.I might listen to the whole album again.Crazy it’s from 1972.

Naturally this album is bound to be popular for me. It’s just classic and impressive.

Cheesy metal music, I enjoyed this one a lot. I have a soft spot for anything I can imagine myself playing on Guitar Hero as a teenager, while feeling like a rock star. Those guitar solos are heavy and a lot of fun to listen to, and everything else is just icing on the cake. Plus, Smoke on the Water is still an enjoyable listen even after hearing it 50,000 times. That, alongside Highway Star, is the standout track here.

Highway star is fantastisch.

Listened Before? N Holy smokes (on the water) this one was amazing! I have never gotten around to getting into Deep Purple deep cuts at all, but these guys were great musicians and they're stoner rock legends for a reason. This one cooks from beginning to end. I will revisit many times. I may end up getting deeper (heh) into their library now. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Smoke on the Water, Highway Star

I'm only culturally familiar with this album, but I listen to a lot of early 70's rock, so I'm curious about how this will play out. Highway Star always blows me away... off the bat I'm wondering if I got a new 5 star album? The next three tracks really cool me off. I'm at a 3 star now. Smoke on The Water.... Uuuggghhh, yes it's iconic, but it honestly sounds like a poor cover of what would be an iconic classic. With respect for Smoke and Lazy being a breath of fresh air, I'm seeing a 4 star possibly landing. MFers gonna nail me with Space Truckin'?!? That is just what I needed. Come on! When A Blind Man Cries doesn't jive on this album for me. I like the song, but the album could've ended with Space Truckin'. I don't judge bad end tracks too harshly cause it happens so often. It's easy enough to stop playing and it's ok. Maybe shy, but I'll score a 4.

Better than i expected and ignoring the bad reputation that smoke on the water has i reat this a 4.

I always saw this at record stores and never really thought I’d be the one interested into this but here we are I am very interested in it. I think that Smoke On The Water shouldn’t have been the single as there is many other tunes on here that I feel would be a better sing but overall very impressed with this album

Great classic rock album.

I was surprised that I liked this as much as I did. Some silly lyrics, but the music is decent and fun. I added the first track to my Liked Songs list.

Not a Deep Purple fan, but this album is FUN. Kick ass drumming, bass, guitar and synth - and Ian Gilian also does a good enough job to my taste. Maybe coming across Smoke on the Water made be balk a bit - but it’s the songs fault - it actually gave me a chance to give it a proper listen after all these years and appreciate its special place in the rock and roll arsenal. Much more fun than I thought it would be.

Lazy, Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are certainly three iconic rock music pieces that are remembered by anyone having been young at that time.

4/5. A fantastic collection of heavy rock songs. There are some skippable songs on here but truly an awesome album.

When I think of Deep Purple, I immediately think of the high level of technical mastery the band had. They're really exceptional on pretty much every level. That makes the jamminess of some of these songs somewhat forgivable. I mean, if I could play like these guys, I'd probably indulge myself a bit with it too. The band is actually really good here at restraining themselves. This album is a mere 37 minutes of intense power blues/proto-metal that packs the punch of an album twice as long. There are several classic rock staples included on here as well as some forceful deep cuts that still burn 50+ years on. It's probably the best album Deep Purple ever made. Fave Songs: Space Truckin', Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Pictures of Home

Not bad classic rock. Some recognizable beats. Smoke on the water.

I quite liked this. It seems like a predecessor to the heavier, harder rock and metal that I don't like much. It's giving stereotypical "young British rockstar". I loved the track Maybe I'm a Leo and the extended instrumentation in Lazy. Listened to it around three times abd I'll be listening to it again sometime.

Ein af þessum eðal-klassísku þungarokksplötum. Stutt í blúsinn sums staðar líka. Ekkert út á þetta að setja. Ánægjuleg frá upphafi til enda!

Highway Star und Maybe I'm A Leo sind ein guter Start, Smoke On The Water ist natürlich toll. Never Before & When A Blind Man Cries sind auch gut, schlechte Lieder sind keine dabei.

Great classic rock. I much prefer Blackmore's Rainbow over his Deep Purple stuff so this isn't as great as his other work. Still good stuff and of course, Smoke on the Water is a killer.

Lolz this was cheezy as fuck but like owned it and actually some pretty good jammy shreds in there.

This album rules. Deep basslines and overall rock sound. Favorite track: Space Truckin'

Containing THE riff for aspiring guitarists to learn certainly counts in Machine Head’s favor. But Deep Purple pack this album full of tasty runs and pummeling beats.

As time passes, it becomes clearer and clearer that Deep Purple’s music tends towards the bland. A simple comparison with Led Zeppelin’s music (same genre, yet timeless music) is all it takes to arrive at that conclusion. However, Machine Head represent DP at its peak, and although bland they do have something to offer. Smoke on the Water is the obvious example.

The classicest of rock

Weird that Smoke on the Water became this band's all time decade-defining hit. It's the most okayest song on here. Really really loved Lazy and Space Truckin'. Highway Star is great, too, but I can't not associate it with the game Rock Band. Lots to love here.

Before today, I never heard a full Deep Purple album. I regret not doing it sooner.

requires no explanation, perfect if that's what you're in the mood for

Great classic rock!

BITCHEN

As a whole, significantly better than “Smoke on the Water.” You can really hear the seeds of NWOBHM in several songs, and there’s only one crappy blues-rock track.

Why not 5 as it's one of the template heavy rock albums. Not quite perfect, as Lazy is some standard boogie. But otherwise just brilliant.

Had no idea just how influential this album is, I can hear all sorts of bands from later decades in the.

First listen to a Deep Purple record. Starts off strong with Highway Star with its fast tempo and cool solo. Maybe I’m A Leo has some good riffs but very repetitive for a near 5 minute track. Pictures Of Home was a solid track started with decent instrumental and was a solid track throughout. Never Before was a okay track but very forgettable after the first listen. Smoke On The Water is a classic rock track and is the main standout on this record. The intro to Lazy was a surprise but executed well in style with the record but personally the track didn’t need to be 7 minutes long despite having a good instrumental. Keep Truckin’ was an okay track with solid instrumental but was very repetitive which i wasn’t keen on. When A Blind Man Cries was an excellent way to end off the album with its slow paced style. Overall this album was a good look into Rock in the early 70s but doesn’t really appeal to my taste when it comes to lyrics but instrumental wise it knocked it out of the park. 4/5

8,3 Iconic songs Great riffs

OK, I needed this as a kick start this morning. I enjoyed it despite myself

3.5, 4 stars for smoke on the water

classic.

Great classic rock album.

Ok - prefer faster paced tracks, but smoke on the water (surprise surprise) was good

Lovely ‘ald rock.

A few great tracks, and the rest were pleasant but not amazing

Great stuff!!

Listened to on 9/8/22 4/5 Favorite song: smoke on the water, highway star I really enjoyed this 70s rock album - there were quite a few bops and I kept it on repeat all afternoon

They get props for being on the Mt. Rushmore of heavy metal. I am also sure that some of the bits in Spinal Tap are about them. As for the music - aside from the fact that every teenager growing up had to play Smoke On The Water, it holds up very well. Great riffs, the prominence of organ solos, powerhouse drumming and great hard rock vocals. The perfect balan ce between good tunes and extended soloing. It may be dumb rock to some, but it is great dumb rock.

Is it the greatest guitar riff of all time? Either "Smoke on the Water" or "Jumpin' Jack Flash", but I digress. This is a great hard rock album. The drumming on the opening track (Highway Star) is so powerful that it sets the tone for the entire album. The fact that "Smoke on the Water" is recounting a true story is very cool. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar playing is excellent throughout -- I think he gets overlooked compared to some of his contemporaries. I would give this a 4.5 if I could.

A pretty good album at the crossroads of hard rock and psychedelia. I liked it a lot but don't think anything here is better than what Led Zeppelin or black Sabbath does. Highway Star is a lot of fun, and of course the album has the most learned riff in rock history (besides seven nation army) so that's gotta count for something.

This is a great rock album, smoke on the water an all time classic. Up there with the best of 70’s hard rock.

3.5, but "Smoke on the water", "Highway Star" and "Space Trucking" just have to push this up to a 4.

Pretty fun stuff, will likely revisit. Some really good early metal. Got into the groove more as the album went. 4 stars

I had disregarded this band as just another hair band or something, but newfound respect listening to this. It feels like they believe what they're doing in a way that some bands in this genre can lack. Some great grooves. And what can you say about Smoke on the Water, hard to get more iconic that that.

Iconic rock album, drags a bit in the middle but the songs bookending the album are top notch.

4 pretty damn fine songs, classics perhaps of the 7 songs on this album. 4 🌟

Fun, straight-forward rock-n-roll. The number of keyboard solos seem unnecessary.

4/5. Classic, Classic Rock. Smoke on the Water, Highway Star, Lazy, and Space Truckin' are all mega-classic.

A solid block of rock. Deservedly good.

Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are both incredible and, while the rest of the album didn't quite match up, it was still really solid with some fantastic playing throughout

Hair band. Air guitar worthy.

Banger.

Worth buying.

The classic Deep Purple and arguably this captures them on top form. Some great tracks here - Highway Star, Never Before, Smoke on the Water (of course) and When a Blind Man Cries - the musicianship is exceptional, and their sound is a lovely mix of heavy rock and melody courtesy of Richie Blackmore's mellifluous guitar and Jon Lord's keyboards. A couple of throwaway tracks - Lazy especially - prevents this being an absolute classic

A little better than your standard classic rock album

Good riffs, aged shockingly well

I'm not a big fan of Deep Purple, but listening to this release, I get the reasons for this so-long hype. They are consistent in their albums, and Machine Head is somehow the summary of their potential. A classical album does not become classical for no reason.

Can hear the precursor to Metallica

highway star, smoke on the water hammond organ rocks pretty hard lyrics mention zappa concert burning down the casino before recording at the time I was reading zappa's book which also mentions it.

Four star classic. Can hear lots of Zep in here.

It became classic for a reason: these songs are pure rock ragers. Who cares FM radio played them to death?

Pure 70s rock in the most fun way possible. Some absolutle bangers on this one. I don't think it's in my favorites of all time, but I really enjoyed it.

Hairy space/prog/metal. Put on your best sleeveless denim jacket and start air guitaring away. Also, best not wash for a week to get the full experience. Best Tracks: Highway Star; Smoke on Water; Space Truckin'

Hey has anyone ever heard that song smoke on the water before it's a pretty cool song haha

This album rocks and delivers on everything you would associate with Deep Purple. It fits right in with the advent of Zeppelin, Sabbath, and the hard rock scene. It's a direct progenitor of hair metal and rock acts like Van Halen, Crüe, Judas Priest. It's good throughout and should get most people away from just listening to "Smoke on the Water".

It's undeniably a big stupid album but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Only dip shits don't like this album. It's greattttt

These guys just rock… highway star is an all-time classic… good music

Classic rock like a precursor to AC/DC. Includes the overplayed Smoke On The Water - the other songs sound good too.

As is probably the case for many, the only song I recognized before diving into this album was "Smoke on the Water", so I was pleasantly surprised (as someone who doesn't really listen to hard rock or heavy metal) to enjoy most of the songs, even adding a couple to my personal playlists. It was also cool to peak at the Wikipedia page and learn about the inspiration for "Smoke"!

This groups was good by what I remember… The album opens with highway star the sonic is like an overexcited catapult of energy crashing into you only stopping for the awesome guitar solo. It’s an excellent opener though; maybe me from some 20 or so days ago would’ve written the length of the song as “ too pretentious” for an opener at 6 minutes, but it doesn’t feel like 6 minutes be honest. Deep purple just have the formula for long songs! Next is maybe I’m a leo it’s a slower track but still keeps the band’s essentials in tact it’s also quite playful for the song’s intro that bit goes but it’s cool while it was there. Pictures of home starts with a brief drum solo it’s quite a cool song to be fair it’s only three verses spanning 5 minutes but still cool. Strangely enough, it’s probably the way he sings it that makes the song unique. An odd favourite! Never before is good but not as good it’s essentially a dive into more of a pop rock sound it works really well for the album, especially the chorus and the slowed down bridge. Smoke on the water has one of the most simple but effective guitar riffs ever ( even I could probably do it). The bass line is also very cool and complements the song quite a bit. As far as the core of the song goes, the verse tell a good story and while the chorus doesn’t lyrically fit up too much with the verses it’s still a top tier chorus and a good song. Now the penultimate track lazy the intro is much more electronic than the others but it somehow works then the song goes into a more organic sound still with the cool keys though . The song is slow and fairly long but after the song’s 4 minute intro there’s a small sonic in there it’s alright not the best, especially with the harmonica solo. Way to ruin a near perfect album. The album finishes with space truckin the lyrics are dumb but it’s good feels like lazy was the end of the set list and this is the encore to the album decent sonic though. Well I must say it was close to a 5 fine it didn’t reach the heights of lets say child in time or flight of the rat on deep purple in rock it still was a consistently good effort that I would have returned to and I still will but lazy is such a drag that I will never touch again.

hadde faktisk aldri høyrt heile albumet før

Genre: Hard Rock 4/5 Oh, hell yes. Rip the hair of your balls rock and roll. It's motherfucking Machine Head. A classic album with classic songs from one of UK's best, the hard rockin' supergroup Deep Purple. An album I've listened to many, many times, and one that continues to reward repeat listens, Machine Head has some of rock and roll's biggest moments ever, and not just from the 70s. The riff from Smoke on the Water is one of popular music's most recognizable licks around, which some call simple and lame, while others deem it iconic and necessary. Deep Purple's synthesis of blues and hard rock wasn't the most unique at the time, but Deep Purple's technical talent set them apart from other hard rock outfits. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Ian Paice on drums, Roger Glover on bass, the classically trained Jon Lord on keys, and the incomparable Ian Gillan on lead vocals, made for one astounding rock group. Each musician enjoys their moment in the spotlight on this, as each song gives ample time for extreme noodling. The opener, another classic single, Highway Star, gives Blackmore and Lord plenty of time to showcase their brilliant playing. Space Truckin' provides time for Ian Paice to show off his solo talents, along with Pictures of Home (which even finds time for a Roger Glover bass solo!), all while Ian Gillan gives us some of rock's biggest and best vocal performances throughout this album. Great album that'll grow some hair on your chest, and keep you head banging till the final fade out.

I love Highway Star. This is a great blues-based hard rock album anchored by Smoke on the Water.

4/26/2022 Today's Album: "Machine Head" by Deep Purple - This album is some serious dad rock if I've ever heard it, tapping into that early metal sound while maintaining a mostly generic 70's rock aesthetic. There's a lot of fun performances on here and I think the production is quite nice, but it's definitely an album that caters to it's demographic and just sticks to it. It's pretty much a by the numbers 70s rock outfit full with rock organ, bluesy solos, and 4 chord structures. There's even that classic hit Smoke On The Water, which sounds even more like dad rock in this context than it already did. I'm not saying this album is bad, but I also understand that I am someone who tends to like this kind of music and it really doesn't do much outside of just performing the genre. That being said, if you like dad rock, this album is stellar. The solos throughout are absolutely mind melting and the 7 minute track Lazy is just an all out jam session. I like how many ideas this band traverses in a single song and it really helps to make this album stand out from your typical rock group. There are songs that don't hit as hard as others on this project, but with a runtime of 40 minutes over only 8 tracks, the songs are over before you know it and you're onto the next impressive solo or headbanging chorus. Honestly, this feels like a record that I would be really really on the fence with, but the instrumental breaks and solos just keep bringing me in. Overall, I think this is an above average 70s rock album, but it also doesn't do a ton to really revolutionize the genre. Listen to this one if you like dad rock or can sit through any track if it's got a killer guitar solo. Highlights: Highway Star, Maybe I'm a Leo, Pictures of Home, Smoke On The Water, Lazy, Space Truckin', When A Blind Man Cries Score: 7.5/10 Dad rock, but some of the best of it's breed.

dudes rock

Listening to this album, I could just hear the influences on a bunch of 80s bands. Like if you told me Motley Crue, GNR, or Van Halen grew up listening to this stuff, I could totally see it. The entire album has pretty awesome guitar

Like it!

035036503530! Great album with some all time great songs. "Highway Star" is one of my favorite Rock Band songs to play even if it gets tiring by the end. "Smoke On The Water" is obviously one of the most well known songs of all time. I think every guitar player has played that classic riff at least once. My favorite track though is "When A Blind Man Cries" which unfortunately didn't make it on the original track listing. I just love the groovy band jam vibe of it.

Banging proto-metal in the opening and closing portions of the album, they revert to blues appropriation, as was the custom at the time, in the middle portion. Fave track - "Smoke on the Water" is obviously iconic, but "Highway Star" and "Space Truckin'" are prolly more fun to listen to....

Smoke on the Water is obnoxiously classic at this point. The whole album I feel follows the trends of the previous ones - good, but not amazing, little highlights or low points, great to listen to but too forgetable to come back to. Lazy is a stand-out, so is Smoke on the Water. 4/5

An album with some of the best known Deep Purple tracks. An old friend, the ol' reliable, you name it. No surprises, no outbursts of joy. Just a really enjoyable portion of classic rock. Highlight: Space Truckin'

Bière Molson et corvette, rock and roll baby.

I know, Smoke on the Water has become a bit of a cliche with its highly recognizable, simplistic main riff. But listening to this music with fresh ears and putting oneself in the context of 1972, when heavy metal was still in its formative years, it's really fucking good. The combination of heavy, riff-based guitar and distorted Hammond organ stands out. 4 stars.

Smoke on water. Bam Bam baaam

Classic hard rock, sounds like it is the example of the genre.

Starts off strong with "Highway Star" but I found "Maybe I'm a Leo" to be a bit of a let-down. Everything after that is a banger, though! Great album, 4.5/5 stars

Nice, original songs, some of them classics

Great guitar play but the rest of the album is just decent to good. Bit disappointed, expected a bit more progressive or heavier stuff. Seems to be going more into the direction of for example The Who, without ever reaching that greatness

Not as great as “Live in Japan,” but obviously amazing

Classic guitar rock

Classic 70's power rock with some shades of psychedelia from the late 60's in there. A very powerful album for it's time.

I'll acknowledge that this isn't my version of heavy metal, but it is clean, finds its groove and executes well from start to finish. I can certainly appreciate it as a solid early hard rock album.

I enjoyed it more than I expected!

heard most of these before on live album, definitely solid sound.

». Robert n'a jamais rien écouté d'autre.

4/5 that was a good one!

Some classic tracks such as Smoke on the Water and Highway Superstar, and I really enjoyed the energy and musicianship.

Classic rock, revs up my mornings

Classic. Jon Lord's organ and Blackmore's guitar dominate.

Another classic I never got round to checking out. Of course I already know the majority of the songs. I've always loved Highway Star, and it is still the highlight of the album as far as I'm concerned. Just a really great rock album that is rightfully loved by many.

classic 70s rock, whilst I think later generations have iterated and created newer and more unique sounds, this generation of musicians will remain somewhat timeless

This album contains a classic hit that most people heard one time too many. Even with that crux the rest of the album is amazing. Space trucking, highway star, lazy, ... all deserve as much adoration as smoke on the water. Almost 50 years old and still timeless

Hørte på albumet tre ganger, veldig stilig. Mye keyboard. Likner litt på the doors, men muligens litt "mørkere" i følelsen. Smoke on the water og highway star åpenbare bangers

I would never have guessed this album is from 1972! Way ahead of their time and very metal rock. Smooooooke on the waaaaater

Amazing album. Probably the Deep Purple album I've heard the most.

BUH BUH BUHH BUH BUH DUH DUH BUH BUH BUHH DUH DUH I actually really liked this one Lazy and pictures of home slap

Deep Purple is one of those artists that I have always heard of, but never checked out. Aside from "Smoke on the Water", I had never even heard another Deep Purple song before. Once I finished Machine Head, I now understood the praise and recognition this band gets. Simply put, it rocks! It's not as generic as I was expecting it to be. While not a fair assumption to make, I tend to find most classic rock pretty tame. Deep Purple didn't merely meet my expectations, but they exceeded them!

Great album

Smoke on the Water is a classic.

11/2 Just some classic hard rock. Standout Tracks: Highway Star, Smoke On The Water, Lazy, Space Truckin', When A Blind Man Cries

A classic for a reason

There are some classic bangers on here that are so high above the other tracks. Solid!

The album that spawned 'Smoke on the Water' - written after the casino the the album was to be recorded in burnt down during a Frank Zappa concert! Great British rock - tinged with no many genres. Fab.

Awesome.

Smoke on the water.. The rest isn't fab, but it's Smoke on the water.

short album, but very iconic rock. Highway Star & smoke on the water <3.

I'm not a fan of metal but this album is one of the few that I can listen to in its entirety. Smoke on the water and Highway Superstar are iconic head-banger tracks of course, but I also enjoyed Lazy and Space Truckin' and especially the amped up organ which gives them a very distinctive sound. The background story on Smoke is interesting - how some idiot with a flare gun at a Frank Zappa concert burned their concert venue down. This is a solid 3.5 for me, but I'll round it up because its iconic and still rocks 50 years later.

Some absolute bangers but not without its flaws (pace is slow in places). Just shy of a 5.

Highway Star is the most underrated Hard Rock song of all time Smoke on the Water is a classic

Quality stuff if you ask me!

Required to listen at 11!

Stellar riffage from Blackmore. Gillan does his best Plant impression and Paice tries some Bonham, and both do a decent job. Not sure if this inspires me to dive into their catalogue, but a very enjoyable listen. Choice cuts: Highway Star, Maybe I’m A Leo, Space Truckin’

pretty good rock album. Enjoyed it and knew a few songs on it.

nice space/blues rock album. Great riffs, lyrics can be a bit silly.

Smoke in the water Muy buen disco

glassic

I enjoyed this more than I expected to. Generally I'm not a fan of this sound, but I really liked the drums and guitar. Favorite track: Pictures of Home

70. Vou acertar no preço certo. Desce as escadas. Não tropeces, Henry Mancini. MotA: Lazy "Nobody gonna take my car, I'm gonna race it to the ground"

First time listening except for Smoke on the water. A very rad album.

Smoke on the Water has that one guitar motif i've heard around before. Nice to see it has a name now. Oh. the lyrics of lazy sure are something.

Pretty good dad rock with a few bangers on there. Highway star is ultimate cock rock. Probably didn’t quite deserve a 4 but a 3 was harsh

Fantastic!

Great start, classic groove rock, excited for tomorrow

Enjoyed this one way more than I thought I would. I hadn’t heard anything by these guys other than “Smoke on the Water” and found the rest of the album to be equally solid and enjoyable.

Better than I was expecting. Not a fan of "Smoke on the Water", but "Lazy" is and amazing track. And I discovered "Maybe I'm A Leo" and "Pictures of Home" which are also bangers. Love Deep Purples organ work.

That organ shreds
