Reviews (page 6 of 13)
Heavy metal from this era is the only type of metal I can get into. It sounds like beefed-up classic rock, a little more aggressive but still very melodic and listenable. This is a fantastic debut, bursting out the gates with energy and speed, and some fantastic catchy hooks. While they were still developing their identity, this is a great indicator of what's to come.
Do I like Iron Maiden????????
Better than I was expecting
A classic. Gets a bit lost with some excessive guitar noodling at times, but in general a lot of great metal songs
I love Iron Maiden, and there's a lot to be said for this first album, even though it isn't one of my favorites. It really defined much of their sound before Bruce Dickenson joined the band. I love "Running Free"!
Classic dad rock, perfect for cooking to XD
relisten. probably unpopular opinion but its one of my favorite Iron Maiden albums and one that i return to the most often i think. Remember Tomorrow is such a great song.
I briefly listened to maiden back in the day and had forgotten how good this album is.
good
This leans towards my kind of heavy metal… there looks to be enough spandex but it’s a little more serious than my very favorite. Still, some good tunes. I really liked Phantom of the Opera and Iron Maiden.
metal
Really enjoyed this. Haven’t listened to it since I was a teenager and forgot how much fun it is.
Crazy to have 2 in one week. I liked this one too though… much more melodic than I expect from metal. 7.5/10
Lowkey got used to the vocals after a bit and started to enjoy it. The guitar is so good
I always thought Eddie was holding a syringe on this album cover.
Classic old metal.
oh yea baby. Its weird listening to them pre-Bruce, but its amazing just how many of the nuts and bolts on their sound were locked in this early. But this is S O L I D.
Gefällt!
Great album, I find it a good entry point for metal/hard rock
Classic stuff.
Iron Maiden always sounds like the gold standard of metal from my youth. It's outstanding how good this sounds even without the core members form the 80's heyday (like Dickinson, Smith, McBrain). They would get better, but this is top notch.
Very good! Love the double lead guitar.
Excellent.
Shocker: I like Iron Maiden! Surprised by the catchy melodies and complex arrangements with changing tempos.
Meh. Not my jam. With that said. Classic
Decent album. I did not have a standout song but all worth a listen for sure. Wish we could do half stars I would be a 3.5.
This is a great metal album that really helped kickstart the whole genre, and it still holds up today. It's also one of the great debut metal albums. It's not perfect, and I think they really came into their own with their subsequent albums but it's still an awesome set of songs.
Hell of a debut. Richly melodic and harmonic while sounding like an exploding planet.
Fun intro to thrash
I'm digging it. Was a bit of a weird vibe at 9am over coffee but fun. Similar to Jamie it felt closer to my early loves of Use Your Illusion / Spaghetti Incident but with more guitar and drums and less ballads
A real rocker.
Umm, I don’t hate this and actually voluntarily listened a second time through. I like Prowler, Remember Tomorrow, and Iron Maiden.
Very enjoyable record. The guitar riffs and the vocals are very addictive. Favorite tracks are "Prowler" and "Running free"
Fast paced, with soaring guitar riffs like most Iron Maiden albums. Not having Bruce Dickinson voice matching pitch and rhythm rise feels like something is missing to me but that's because the few times I have listened to an Iron Maiden album Bruce had become the lead singer. Side note: No FX has a hilarious song about this. Solid Album.
Great heavy metal
A good 80s rock album, but there’s nothing exceptionally unique about this.
I've never listened to Iron Maiden because I always assumed I would hate wat I thought it was: heavy metal. To my surprise, not only did I not hate it, I like it.
excellent 80s metal
Classic. 4
Humble beginnings- great album
fantastic album though not my favorite from them.
Not the typical Iron Maiden you think of when you think of their well known songs. Longer songs. More of a project almost than an album. Good
I've heard better early metal records, but this is a great entry in the music canon, and definitely has that feeling of "these guys have potential to be big".
Heavy metal is not my thing usually, but I liked the raw production and punk influence in parts. Even some of the more Proggy sounds weren’t too sickening. Enjoyed it on the whole, especially all the singing about running, nice to hear of such a healthy bunch of lads.
A solid classic. Even though Bruce was not in this album, the songs and energy that have shaped Iron Maiden's spirit can be found here - still at an early stage, but they're here. Emblematic songs like Transylvania, Phantom of the Opera, and Iron Maiden are in this album also. Short and direct, Iron Maiden is a good album.
A solid self-titled debut by Iron Maiden. Bursting onto the stage as the new guys to watch on the heavy metal scene. With it's blinding speed and rampant ferocity it makes the most plastic heavy rock tracks from the '60s and '70s sound sloth-like and funeral-dirgey by comparison, . Best: Phantom of the Opera Worst: Strange World
I forgot how good this one is
these guitar riffs go hard
Fantastic album art, fantastic album. Especially the parts without any singing.
Good old rowdy rock
Rough but unique. That one started a career.
They stole a riff from Papa Roach??? They used to sound not pretentious????? I know I am going to get downvoted for this but this was leagues better than their Number Of The Beast (and, I assume, the rest of their discography), specifically the vocals
really liked this!
It’s cool. Good for them. Love getting these metal albums that I wouldn’t normal seek out. I wish I were cool enough to listen to Iron Maiden.
Surprisingly good, i thought iron maiden were screamier than that
Excellent. Charolet the harlot
I am a Maiden head. I love them.
A very solid, clean, heavy metal album. Pretty great for the bands first album although there are no huge hits. 7/10
mola bastante
Very nice.
Almost sounds like Iron Maiden. They really should get a different singer and let their bass player go to town.
Rockin album! Certainly screams 80s.
I haven’t heard much of Iron Maiden and now I want to hear much more of Iron Maiden. Great fkn album
6 / 10 Buen Hard - Rock. Sin nada especial.
Good workout music
Very solid. They're sound defo improves later with Bruce. But this is great fun big sound.
Pois outro disco destes así de mítica banda que me sorprende e me gusta, moi ben a verdade
overall pretty good, the mixing is a bit sad, which isnt a surprise for its time. would listen again Significant 40/126 Liked 19/126 Added 4/126 YYM
Amazing guitar work as usual from this group. If you don’t like hard guitar this may not be for you. Not sure if this is the best this group has to offer either but I enjoy them and this album.
Hardrock at it's best. Aber eben nicht mein Ding
Nice!
Not normally the type of music I enjoy but I think this was a brilliant album
Different than I expected but still good.
Fun
yea
I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected.
Listened to this while glazing pottery which was very fun. All the songs ran together for me, which is fine because I liked the vibe
I enjoyed this much more than I expected to. I'm not a big Metal guy, but this was more raw and I found that more interesting than I find most of the technically proficient metal.
Wow…. This rips! Sorry liberals
3.5/5 personal favourites: • prowler • phantom of the opera
Finally a metal album on this thing, but it's the crappy end of maiden. The first album is alright, there are a few good songs on it but the singing is shithouse. Still, even the crappy end of maiden is pretty good.
How fun not too screamy not too verbose not too thrashy just fun guitar licks
I keep getting surprised by how good old, classic heavy-metal is. I guess it just goes to show that nu-metal sucks.
Never heard it before. Loved it. More Zep than I thought it would be.
Classic! (I was, momentarily, transported back to Daley Thompson advertising Lucozade…) Such a milestone of an album, laying the foundations for a band that’s still doing it over 49 years later.
Don't think I've ever listened to an Iron Maiden album before, also didn't know they had a different singer originally. I liked it though, good listen.
Enjoyed this, some twiddly guitar and good bass work. Enjoyed Iron Maiden without Bruce, as his voice grates on me!
Love this album, it's clearly Maiden but much more raw than their more refined sound of later albums. Much more energy in every track.
while the vocals reminds me of a lot of every other heavy metal band of the time, and some of them can be a little bit goofy, the instruments being played are pure bliss. super good guitar riffs and every other instrument adds perfectly to it. the best parts are definitely the ones without lyrics for me. drumming keeps a the tempo very well with its own solos without being too overpowering.
De spelar jätte snabtt så jag kan inte ge kritik; Jag kan inte vara med. Gör jag en höna av en fjäder om jag säger det här et felfri musik? (This idiom refers to the act of making something unimportant seem very important) Ett dag utan Ironmaden är som ett år utan sommar. Jag borde spender Sommeren mer.. rip Arto
Pretty great early metal. Not a fan of the operatic, vibrato vocals that Iron Maiden brings to the table, but the heavy featuring of Steve Harris on bass makes up for that shortcoming.
Cracking album
Iron Maiden always sounds like the stereotype of heavy metal music. It makes me think of Spinal Tap.
great gateway album into heavy metal.
Another classic
Technically, a good album. Would I listen again? Probably not. It's not cutesy Indie soft boi enough for me. Sorry not sorry. 3/5. - Harriet Harriet has 0 music taste, this album is at least a 8/10 - Praneet
ZAMN. 8/10, first 4 songs are amazing. Saved Phantom of the Opera
Definitely one of the classics. I hadn't heard this specific album of Iron Maiden, but it's very recognizable. Favorite song: Phantom of the Opera.
Yes! The album that started it all. Is this iron maidens best album? Even top 10? Hard to say. Has a punkier energy than the Bruce era. The guitar work is awesome, Clive burrs drumming is great (if not quite as swingy as Nicko). Really nicely produced, great separation etc. love this album. A couple of stinker songs bring the score down slightly
Didn't realize lines were so complex. Interesting. Have heard these songs sung by Bruce. Probably all started as riffs and then turned into songs.
Great trailblazing album leading the way for the sound of heavy metal the rest of the decade
vocals are aight. Guitar is sick
Classic album, not too long but sound's great - not much more to say than that. Nothing I haven't heard before.
It's a good album, so powerful.
Fun
had never listened to Iron Maiden before this. I love it!!
Very impressed. Was not expecting to sound like it did. Was a much more thin lizzy sounding album mixed with punk. Energetic and enjoyable
A great speed metal album. There's a rough quality to it, like it's almost home made, which gives it a lot to like!
This is a tough one bc it’s so good for what it is, but I don’t think 5 stars really fits. It’s super tight and the sound is undeniable. The tone is like brass but full. It’s structured great as an album. 4.25/5
Heavy and fast. Di’anno has a good voice but it’s hard to separate the Dickinson sound from the Iron Maiden image.
Gelernt Hard Rock - kann man öfter hören
I got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby. They have a good 80s hard rock sound. I like that the singer doesn't always use the harsh rocker voice.
I will admit, the album art for Iron Maiden always had me thinking a certain way about their music. Previously, Run to the Hills is the only song I knew. And boy howdy was I surprised by this album. The technical skill these guys have is very impressive.
I am not equating Iron Maiden to the Bard However Bill S is a good analogy I listened to this album and thought - this is just generic 80s metal. But that's the thing - they pioneered it. Docking them for that would be like docking Shakespeare for using too many clichés...which he invented haha
love it
8/10
i love it this is the beter album i had and i get why they got the fan base that they got
Trodde inte jag gillade Iron Maiden
Pretty easy listen for a classic metal album.
Solid, I love how after many, many years later a couple songs are still staples in their live shows.
Never listened to Iron Maiden before, and I’m pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed this album. It’s not the best, but I had a good time throughout. I think I enjoy metal more than I realize. 8/10 Top 3: 1. Prowler 2. Phantom of the Opera 3. Transylvania
The more I hear this one, the more it creeps up to becoming my favourite Iron Maiden album. I don't listen to them very much anymore, but the raw almost punk energy on this one really appeals to me way more than their later stuff, which feels super bloated and devoid of passion. 'Prowler' and 'Iron Maiden' are just pedal to the metal bangers, 'Phantom of the Opera' goes all over the place with super fun riffs, and the tempo changes in 'Remember Tomorrow', it's all so easy to listen to.
Their album "number of the beast" was the first album I reviewed hereand I'm glad I got another chance to listen. Still not entirely my thing but this debut has a tiny bit of punk DNA in it which I think makes it more compelling. The tempo switches and joy in which the rythem section plays with is so much fun to listen to. Sure, stretches of songs serve as a guitar fingering/ exploration exercise at times but I can't help but love the moment when the band thinks to themselves "yeah, we fucking got this". Personal favorites include "prowler" and "transylvania".
This album was a pleasant surprise for me. Good songs across the board, all of which showcased a solid guitar solo - I’m in.
Funny
fun album, lays foundations for later IM albums
Damn this shit slaps. Really good bass, and guitar, and drums. The singer is decent as well, and so far (2 songs in) all the songs have a different vibe. It's sorta like if the Alman brother's rocked *tongue out fingers in the rock shape*, and it's sick. Enjoyed it all the way through the album. Nice change of pace to the slower 70s music I had recently Wild Gift - X and Roxy Music - Roxy Music.
I actually really enjoyed the rocking on this album, would love to hear more of this early hard rock style
Transylvania ouf ouf ouf
Probably the biggest surprise so far - I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Some songs are just pure, joyous fun (“Phantom of the Opera” especially.) I can definitely see myself listing to this one again. Highlights: - Phantom of the Opera - Prowler - Transylvania
Really, really damn good on its own, but every single second I kept thinking "this would be so much better if they had Bruce Dickinson from the start" 4.5ish stars
Fajne, ale są lepsze albumy Iron Maiden.
Liked it - it seems like approachable metal
This is a great debut album. They already have their signature sound up and running. Only downside is how short the album is.
Usually dont listen to that much rock, but found this album very good, running free with its punk rock rythm, Phantom of the opera with its varying tempo and strange world with its mellon collic tune is the best of the album. 4.1 for the kit.
Surprisingly tons of fun??
This feels like how I imagine metal to be in the 80's. The instruments where amazing in this and I really enjoyed listening but I found the vocals a little hit or miss, but I know Paul Di'Anno wasn't with the band long enough. I think he can sing really well, but when when he gets the heavier vocal styles (like in Prowler), I don't think it works. It's a weird issue, but I personally think he sounds great singing in Remember Tomorrow, Strange World, Iron Maiden and not a fan of it in Prowler, Running Free, Phantom of the Opera and Charlotte the Harlot. In the end, I think I would prefer this album as an instrumental without the vocals; like for Transylvania. Standouts: Remember Tomorrow, Transylvania, Strange World, Iron Maiden
Listen to this couple days after hearing The Number Of The Beast is little unfair because you can tell that this record is slightly weaker. Nevertheless another solid dose of metal.
This album made me realize I do in fact like some metal, just not the screaming more modern stuff. This prog rock metal blend is pretty dope
I really wasn't looking forward to this but it was much, much better than I had expected. Not as good as the album art, not as good as Sabbath, but so much better (IMO) than the metal that came later.
The following album, Killers is better but this is still quite good.
Energetic 7/10
It was good. Really liked Prowler & Transylvania.
Surprisingly better than I thought. I don't know what I was expecting but that wasn't it
Listened Before? No Album Art: 4 / 5 (Maiden has some of the best art in metal) Album opens on a power riff with Prowler. Is this Dickensen (*nope*)? Doesn't sound as whiny as I'm accustomed to; I like it! Production is super flat and lacks punch, however, which is a damned shame because this song fucking rips after the 2 minute mark. Remember Tomorrow is a bit of a more ballady song that eventually gives way to driving metal bridge and back to the ballad. Reminds somewhat of Megadeth. Clean guitar work. Running Free opens sounding like a punkier cut of that Garry Glitter stadium anthem. This song shows more of a punk origin than most of the others. Transylvania is a solid instrumental jam. Rips end to end. God I wish the mixing wasn't such trash. Love the way it transitions seamlessly into Strange World with the echo effect on the guitar intro and plucked harmonics. Almost feels like a hybrid between PF Echos and Metallica's Nothing Else Matters as performed by Rush. Overall a very proggy sounding song that I can sink in to. Damn, this back half is ripping -- Charlotte the Harlot rips. And then there is Iron Maiden, by Iron Maiden off of their debut album Iron Maiden, which is lead by a gurgling punk bass line and a splashy repetitive guitar riff. A bit messy around the 1 minute mark, but its a jam. Alright... this album rocks. I'm so sad, having heard this to know what Maiden become. This is a beautiful fusion of metal with a punk origin and proggy impulses with a singer whose voice I do not actively detest. Only thing about this that could make it better is if they had a proper producer on the boards to capture the drum and bass better to punch this one up. The flat mixing does none of the instrumentals justice, which is a damned shame. High 4 / 5. Added to Library? Yes Songs Added to Playlists:
Listened to this twice. It's pretty good as far as metal goes, but I was hoping for a bit more from Iron Maiden. Maybe because it's their first album? Either way it was still an enjoyable listen. 3.5 rounding up because it shreds
Listened before? Yes Such a much more raw metal sounds than other Iron Maiden albums. Haven't listened to this one in a few years and I am upset at myself that it's been so long Prowler is just straight metal to start out. Running free and Phantom of the Opera just really get you going with the sustained high tempos and awesome guitar. After that the instrumentals of Transylvania and Strange world are a bit of a cool down before the finale. Charlotte the Harlot is fun to sing along to with the matching guitars and vocals. Iron Maiden is an awesome finish with the classic raw metal sounds that are through the whole album Adding to Library? Yes Songs adding to Playing? Phantom of the Opera, Running Free. Both for snowboarding purposes
Would have been 5* with Bruce Dickinson.
finally, some good fucking music. By far not their best record though, in many parts quite rough and not yet the maiden-style, that i appreciate the most. Won't convince many people of the band i'm afraid, but nice to see this kind of music in this list as well, after all the pop/HipHop-stuff
8.67453264/10, I like how they have already found their iconic sound
Solid album 7.5 out of 10
Maiden rulz!!!!!
Outstanding 80s metal album. Nice range of songs, much more accessible than I was expecting.
Love me some Iron Maiden. Still prefer Bruce on vocals though.
Was pleasantly surprised at how good this album actually is. I never really got into Iron Maiden, and while a lot of the songs feel "more of the same", there is still a unique musical quality and "theatrical funness" to this for what is considered "metal".
Prowler - strong start. Would be a nice song for driving. Remember Tomorrow - a bit too droning in the beginning, picks up about halfway through, only to put me back to sleep again. Optional, imo. Running Free - kinda mindless and middle of the road groovin. Good background tune. Could picture it used during a montage. Phantom of the Opera - seven and a half minutes of headbanging, start to finish. Transylvania - starts a little basic but quickly builds to a pretty fun instrumental ride. Strange World - the guitar solo really carries this song. not a bad tune, just a bit boring and oversaturated with guitar effects. Charlotte the Harlot - mindless. kinda forgettable. Iron Maiden - might have the catchiest chorus of the album. Overall not bad but I think I would have loved it more if it were all instrumentals?
rocks hard. liked most of the songs
This is super close to 5 stars, and maybe with a few more listens it could get there for me. Not what I was expecting at all, I love it when heavy metal vocalists actually can sing. I assumed based on the name and album art this would be more screamo or death metal but it wasn't that at all. Fantastic metal album.
While guitar heavy at points, the majority of tracks are my sound. Standouts include Prowler, Remember Tomorrow, Running Free, Phantom Of The Opera, and Strange World.
Rockiger als gedacht und teils sogar etwas punkig!
Not their finest work but phantom of the opera is one of my favourites!
My first record & review. I never got to submit a review for this as I hit the number prior to the written review. But they’ve added a much needed edit feature to this generator. Iron Maiden was one of the first metal acts that I started to listen to. The Number of the Beast was the first record I checked out and I loved it. Then I checked this record out. It’s fantastic but you definitely hear the youthfulness of this record. It’s crazy to hear where they started and to where they are now… or perhaps a better way to look at it is where they started and how they’ve matured and improved throughout their career.
Pretty solid hard rock/metal album, putting it in my album rotation! I like metal albums that take the time to breathe rather than 100% energy 100% of the time, and this definitely checks that box for me. The standout tracks for me are Charlotte the Harlot, Prowler, and Iron Maiden. 8/10
I liked it, not a huge fan of the "newer" Iron Maiden albums but this one was very enjoyable. Not too over the top. All around very solid if a little too mundane.
Solid end to end
Ganske bra egentlig.
VERY important note: one of the few bands to pull off the holy trifecta of: 1) releasing an album 2) which is simply entitled as the same name as the band 3) which ALSO contains a song with said same name. PUT RESPECT ON THESE LEGENDS. I vastly prefer prime-era Maiden fan - starting with Number of the Beast through Somewhere In Time - but it's definitely interesting to revisit the Paul Di'Anno (singer) albums (...stirring up memories of being a little kid during the first year of MTV - they'd often televise an old Maiden concert from this era..). They're almost a punk-metal blend here and while nowhere near as progressive (and nerdy) as what they'd become, it's pretty awesome to hear their start. Although "Strange World" could almost have been a b-side from Rush's "Caress of Steel." As for the vocals... no offence to him - Di'Anno isn't anything like his successor Bruce Dickenson who is legendary and I think Bruce added so much more to the music that wouldn't have been possible with Paul. But looking/listening to this as almost a different band works in this context of a young band putting themselves together. Was clear they made the right move replacing Di'Anno but on this album they were able to put together a few classics that carried through the Bruce era in live shows. Legendary start to their career - and that twin guitar attack is a tasty teaser of what was to come over the next decade. 7/10 4 stars.
I don't even like Iron Maiden, but that album was surprinsigly good.
Classic. Not amazing, but it's classic.
Really fun album to listen to - an enjoyable one for a friday afternoon.
7/10, enjoyable with a couple of misses.
Easier listening than expected.
faves: Phantom of the Opera, Transylvania, and Strange World! Love Iron Maiden, big flashback to summer 2020
Iron Maiden is one of the cheesiest bands I've ever heard and I really appreciate that about them. This album shreds and most every song on here is super fun.
Never truly got into Maiden growing up so it was fascinating to hear the pre-Dickinson beginnings of the band. A lot more 80's hair metal influence in their debut than I would've thought but I've liked the outcome. Personal favorites are 'Remember Tomorrow', 'Running Free' and 'Transylvania'.
Pure heavy metal. \m/
Pretty darn cool.
Not an Iron Maiden fan but this album, especially for a debut, is phenomenal!
Excellent 70s style metal album. Not really my wheelhouse, but a fun listen. I hadn’t every listened to Iron Maiden before, but I’m a fan now.
4.0
Full modern metal in 1980. That is something.
This is one of the few times when it's really worthwhile to pick up the remastered version instead of the OG release.
I've only listened to this a few times in the past because of the lack of Bruce. It's a solid debut but not as memorable to me as later albums, but this still packs a good punch and has some nice raw production. Kind of fun hearing them figure out their sound and try a few different things, resulting in a few really classic songs. 3.8
Was tossing between a three and a four, but honestly just had a lot of fun listening to this in the car. Melodic, theatrical, well engineered, a bit silly. Never had delved much at all into this band and I can see the appeal - I’m sure there’ll be other records of theirs to show up so I’m sure they’ll also be fairly fun as well. Three and a half. Fave track: Phantom of the Opera
Love the guitar solos, solid debut front to back
After the first listen I turned the volume up for the second. And up again for the third. All of which made my wife query whether I was 16 still... I'm not quite old enough for this to have been my introduction to Iron Maiden - that was Piece of Mind, with a side helping of The Number of the Beast. So, although I listened to a fair amount of Maiden during my school days I never really explored this album. I knew a few songs from some of the live albums and have played this album maybe a couple of times randomly - although I'm much more likely to end up listening to Killers. But this was an enjoyable album to delve into and it's one I'll listen to again for sure. Particularly enjoyed Iron Maiden and Charlotte the Harlot - they've really gotten into the stride by the end of the album - and Phantom of the Opera is always good value. I've not really listened to this version of Running Free before - the live album from the 1985 album was my only real previous exposure to it and that has the bass play the lead rhythm rather than those drum. Those drums. And the damned swing of it. A bit of a revelation. The closeness fo Antmusic, recorded later the same year, is bizarre. So, yeah, I enjoyed that. Is it 5 stars? Probably not - there are better Maiden albums, although I get why this is here as the break point for NWOBHM. It's a 4, but, heck, I enjoyed it.
Shaping what was to come. Solid 4 only for Harris writing. Once Bruce, Nikko, Adrian came in it was the perfect group
So well put together and way better listening than you would Expect
Cool
Prowler // Remember Tomorrow // Phantom of the Opera // Strange World // Charlotte the Harlot // 4-4.5/5
strange world surprised me alot liked many song and its a good album to revisit too
Probably been somewhat predisposed to this thought after reading the Wikipedia entry but the production does fall pretty flat. So much fat riff potential that feels lost in the mix somehow
This album is just as exciting to listen to as it was when it first got released. I've always loved the punk edge that Paul brought to Maiden's music. This and Killers aren't perfect but they're total classics in my book.
The beginning of great things to come! Nothing like Powerslave or Number of the Beast, but still some great bangers in there!
Catchy, rebellious and wild songs all the way through for the debut album by the legendary Iron Maiden.
I’m not super familiar with metal (yet, first album), but compared to the other metal I do know, I liked this one a lot. A good few of the songs sounded closer to rock to me than to something like Metallica. Particularly liked Charlotte the Harlot.
Anybody else picturing Daley Thompson exploding out of the blocks as 'Phantom of the Opera' kicks in? That Lucozade advert was top tier. Fascinating to hear the birth pangs of both Iron Maiden and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Although they became more sophisticated, I think this version of Maiden - lean, mean and streetwise - beats the more ponderous later iterations. DiAnno is not a great singer compared to Dickinson, but he has more edge and attitude. You can also hear some hangovers from Maiden's influences. 'Strange World' is a bit of an oddity, sounding like those moments when heavy rockers like UFO or the Scorpions would go all spacey. You can also hear the seeds of musical tendencies that would be amplified in later albums; multi-part songs are mercifully rare here, but the joins are obvious - they pretty much stop and start again - an aspect of their sound I've found increasingly irksome as years roll on. Basically, Maiden have been in one of the most prolonged creative tailspins in metal history, but this? Great stuff. 'Running Free' is one of their best songs, and 'Prowler' might just be their very best (in the conversation with 'Wrathchild', says I).
Oh man. Ministry and Iron Maiden back to back? Crazy, list. Crazy. This is definitely not the record I return to when listening to this band which I love, but I very much like the record. I'm a Dickinson guy, but it's a little like saying you're a Bon Scott or Brian Johnson person. In some ways, it's a little irrelevant given how much of AC/DC's sound is made up by the entire rhythm section. Same thing for Maiden. They get more and more progressive, and the songs get longer and longer, as these years go by... but their hallmark sound is certainly in abundance on this record. The things that make them Iron Maiden are here, regardless of who's singing. That said, yeah I really love the vocals and hearing a version of the band that's a little less polished. There's a bit of excitement and energy to the whole endeavor that isn't always at the forefront of a lot of Maiden records. And then songs are just good. There's a handful of tunes here that they played when I saw 'em in the 2010s, and I'm sure they've been on the setlist forever and will never leave. With good reason! This is pretty damn great.
Pourquoi pas ça ressemble pas trop au hellfest ou au moins a l'idée que je m'enf aisait. plutot du rock classique
A blast from my past, literally. Where it all started and still stands up today. Primitive production but the rawness adds to the excitement
8/10 Fave track: Running free
Hell yeah brothers. Iron Maiden, am I right men?
alfa length, alfa album prowler, remember tomorrow
Alfa Maiden
Classic shredding metal.
really fucking good debut album
La grandeur et le spectaculaire de l'opéra; un rock travaillé, décliné dans plusieurs possibilités, mais quand même ludique.
This is probably their weakest (if not the weakest) album. That being said, a weak album for Iron Maiden is still out of reach for a lot of bands trying to copy them
I wanted to Run to the Hills but just ran free
oui
This is one of those classic metal bands; now turned boomer music. They are still pretty good though. Overall pretty good metal. Not grating and overly produced. There were a few slower songs that I didn't like as much but overall was not bad. Nothing really jumped out at me as something I really needed in my music playlist, but it was still enjoyable A low 4/5
Super fun! I am not at all familiar with Iron Maiden really, and hearing the debut made me excited to see how they evolved. Def reminded me that this genre is really a take on classical music, especially arpeggios, just with distortion and drums. Felt really cohesive, the tracks flowed really nicely.
This is less metal than it is just good hard rock. Much closer to Foghat or G&R than Black Sabbath or Metallica. I also hear some punk influences. Don’t be misled by their name (even though the logo is a little creepy)
Meh...
Simpliste mais efficace
Horrible album art aside I think this album still holds up. While i prefer Bruce Dickinson's vocals, Di'Anno does a good job on this record. It's fun to hear some up the earlier themes which would become Iron Maiden's bread and butter later on as well as hearing where they started with clear punk rock and prog influences. I enjoyed the guitars even though they drag on a bit some time. It's a decent album both as a document of the times and within it's own right.
I didn't think I liked heavy metal. But, I really, really liked this, a lot. Very melodic, very fast, very loud.
Pleasantly surprised
Not what I expected! This reminded me more of Queen with a side of prog than what I would think of as 'heavy' metal. Enjoyed the guitar solos and the driving beat, especially of Running Free. Reminded me of the Burundi beat from the previous Adam Ant album. Also enjoyed Phantom of the Opera, which brought to mind the War of the Worlds album. Charlotte the Harlot was toe-curlingly misogynist, though not out of sync with the times I guess.
Their guitar sound is amazing!!! The songs did kinda all sound the same but I love the guitar
Good!!!
I've listened to a few metal albums before and I even have listened to The Number of the Beast from Iron Maiden before. I didn't find that album too interesting so I didn't have high expectations with this album. But no, this album did surpass my expectations. I could see myself coming back to this album for sure.
Good album. Nice to listen to.
Great album for its time, but cant compare to the quality of moderns albums in the same genre. will listen to again
Great heavy rock album, pleasantly surprised. Really strong instrumental song on the album.
Album 41 of 1001 Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden Favorite Tracks : Phantom of the Opera / Transylvania Rating : 4 / 5 Nice. Enjoyed this. Another band where I had never really listened, other than the hits. I will indulge in their other offerings. There were moments where I was probably a music snob and brushed heavy metal aside. Sorry I missed out on some good stuff. I'll make up for that.
so banging
Rauw, maar onmiskenbaar goed technisch en muzikaal. Twijfelde tussen 3 en 4. Ga het nog een keer luisteren, dus 4.
Eddie makes everything Iron Maiden... better Iron Maiden. Not a metal guy, but this is really good. What would you call this... "Classic Metal" ..? Regardless, really good. stuff made me want to listen to more Maiden. Aces High is also good.
Good British metal album - though not as good as Judas Priest's British Steel. I'm not really deep into Iron Maiden's catalog, but I prefer the Bruce Dickinson I've heard to Paul DiAnno on this album. The instrumentation on this is top notch: Steve Harris is a sublime bassist and the interplay between Stratton and Murray's guitars have a surprising amount of swing to them at times. Overall a fun listen - I know I'm going to get Number of the Best later on, and now I'm looking forward to that.
Iron Maiden's debut album. They sound very different without Bruce. I really like (perhaps prefer) Paul Di'Anno's slightly softer vocals, but wouldn't trust him to pilot a jumbo jet. This is a little more subtle and less cheesy than the iconic Iron Maiden sound that I'm familiar with. I like it. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Running Free Date listened: 21/04/23
Fantastisk album…
Strong 4, Quite solid
Iron Maiden is a metal band. This album checks all the boxes for a metal album.
3.5 goes hard but not my thing really
This was a surprising revelation. Confounded my preconceived ideas of what Iron maiden albums are. You can hear the various influences in hear everything from pub rock, prog, punk and thrash to name but a few. Have already given it a relisten
Very surprised here. I thought this was a very well done metal album. The vocals are solid, no excessive screaming or overly loud instrumentation. The guitar work is very strong.
Good album, though depending to the mood. Pretty energetic, and I also didn't feel that really heavy metal vibe
Old singer huh
This album impressed me a lot more than I thought it would. The chords and structures especially. Obviously the instrumentation is next to none in the heavy metal world. I don't mind the singing as much as others might. I agree that their second singer is better, but forgetting that, it's still an incredibly enjoyable album. One that I will put on once in a while. It's original, has range, and substance, not just thrash noise. 4/5
The first track on the album, "Prowler", is surprisingly melodic and has a great riff. Then the slower "Remember Tomorrow" is another gem. Reminded me of early (Pre Pyro) Def Leppard. The album's production quality may be a bit rough, but its a debut album so expectations should be modest. 4.0
Iconic. Iron Maiden's debut album may not be their best album, but just hearing their signature sound is enough for me. Growing up, Iron Maiden was a staple in my household. My dad had several of their albums on vinyl, and when he played them for me growing up I remember admiring the Eddie artwork on the sleeves as I was rocking along to the music. So when I put on their debut album, it's like I'm transported back to those days of air guitar and discovering the world of not only heavy metal, but of music. As mentioned, Iron Maiden's signature sound runs throughout the entire album, but a couple of stand-out tracks include Phantom of the Opera and Iron Maiden. It may not be their greatest album, it's still a must-listen for any Iron Maiden fan. And for me, it's like coming home to an old friend. Up the irons!
Send them the Iron Maiden. Excellent! Execute them. Bogus. Never listened to metal as a kid. I can hear the influences on modern bands I enjoy.
I was wrong about this one. Way different than I expected. A nice mix of 60’s and 70’s inspired ballads and some harder songs.
Obviously helped define the genre
solid riffs
Fuck yeah
I'm not a fan of metal but this album wasn't as terrible as I expected it to be. I liked the more rock and roll and guitar-oriented songs, as well as the energy of the album as a whole.
It’s good, although I don’t think Iron Maiden fully reached their potential until Bruce Dickinson arrived. Still worth a listen though, 3.5/5
Enjoyed more than I thought I would
Has hints of Rainbow and soft Mettalica. Even for 1980, the techniques they used were great for their time.
Great metal. Raw feel, not over produced.
Good
Great, shreds 4.5
3,5/5
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Prowler, Strange world
Phantom
I see Maiden, i give *s
I went into this expecting to enjoy it and it exceeded my expectations. This was a fast whirlwind of screeching guitars, shrill vocals and unreal drumming, even some fun bass moments most notably on the closer. This was fucking great. The ballads Remember Tomorrow and Strange World are the only two holding me back from a 5, strong 4.5 stars!
Este álbum no estuvo tan mal. Lo volvería a escuchar sin dudas
Absolute belter of an album
What a difference a vocalist makes. Di’anno’s vocals are much closer to the punk rock roots of NWOBHM, but the instrumentation is very much the familiar Iron Maiden style.
Once again, I can't call myself a metal fan (although I suppose the label "metal" didn't quite mean the same then as it does now), but I enjoyed this album. I like that the more "metal" aspects serve the musical ideas (which are good!), rather than the other way around, which is my (perhaps false) impression of a lot of metal.
Extrem starkes Debüt! Der Sänger klingt noch etwas anders als in späteren Alben.
Iron Maiden is great! Im surprised I haven't listened to this album before (I knew a few songs).
Wait, I actually like Iron Maiden? Like I thoroughly enjoyed this? But this is the band your one uncle (you know the one) likes. Am I become that uncle? Oh no. Any way, this was super good, and I loved the energy. Some of the songs fell a little flat, and with an album this short that's more of a hindrance than normal, but it starts super strong and stays strong on most of the songs, making it really enjoyable. Not perfect by any means, but still shockingly good.
Solid. A strong 3.75
nice album, listened to while working. it's definitely the Blueprint to most modern metal/rock, but it feels a little less polished because of that. favorite was strange world easily. appreciate it more for what it allowed than what it is.
I love Iron Maiden. This is a great freshmen entry but not my favorite album. Mix of heavy metal and punk make this a great roadtrip album. The "list" doesn't include my favorite album, "Piece of Mind", but I'm glad to see the band represented.
kinda vigorous
I like the bass tone in this album. Clive Burr's drumming is really good. The favorite tracks at my initial listening were: Prowler, Remember Tomorrow and Phantom of the Opera. I would probably revisit this album once I have heard most of Iron Maidens work.
Needs Bruce. Still a very solid album.
Not as trashy as I thought. Enjoyed it
That was good. Lots of high energy riffage. Yes, they sounded better when Dickinson arrived on the scene but this was a great debut.
My goodness I enjoyed this. Not least from a nostalgic point of view as I played this incessantly in my early teens. A really interesting mix of heavy metal, punk and prog. Phantom of the Opera just rules.
Not good as Smith-Dickinson era but good
I kind of came into this with a bit of a Bruce Dickinson bias, but this was a pleasant surprise. I'm happy to report that this album stands up just fine on its own merits in Iron Maiden's discography. It's beautifully done. It's an album full of flourishes, but never feels overwrought or self-indulgent. Every note counts. This is an interesting album, because it sits on the cusp between classic 70s prog and 80s metal. It also sits on the cusp of Iron Maiden's evolution as a band. There are threads of what would become band's signature sound already evident in these songs, with dramatic arrangements, a strong rhythm section, and some excellent guitar work. Paul DiAnno's vocal is obviously really different from you might expect if your main interaction with this band was through the later albums. Had he stuck around, Maiden would have been a very different band. But I enjoyed this quite a bit. I could listen to this album a lot. Fave Songs: Transylvania, Prowler, Phantom of the Opera, Running Free, Remember Tomorrow
A very interesting album debuting Iron Maiden on an LP. Some solid songs
Totally solid. Though i certainly prefer Bruce's voice, this is foundational and the songs really hold up. Love Phantom of the Opera, Iron Maiden and Strange World. The guitar on Transylvania is awesome as well. Charlotte the Harlot was a bad idea though.
Solid album. Metal can be a little over the top sometimes (especially the vocals) but the musicality on this album is great and the vocals are decent. Di'Anno almost has a punk-sounding voice. Great guitar and drum tempos, especially on Prowler, Running Free, Phantom of the Opera (really deft guitar work here), and Transylvania. And then of course there are the obligatory (and well done) soaring but heavy ballads - Remember Tomorrow, Strange World. Tight album, not a lot of waste.
For me this album illustrates how much easier it would be to rate out of 10 instead of 5. I was expecting the wails of Bruce but was pleasantly surprised to hear the biting rasp of Di’Anno. This is a meeting of punk and metal and I like it. Out of 10 I’d give it a 7 but 3/5 would be too low
Not their greatest, but still good.
The album opens with prowler a true burst of energy and maybe one of the most enjoyable metal songs I’ve ever herd to be honest! At the start of remember tomorrow I thought how the fuck is this metal? Then it explodes into a rampage, good tune. Running free may not be my favourite lyrically as it’s fairly boring in that sense but the drums are amazing and it serves as a great single. Phantom of the opera is a 7 minute long sprawling epic with one of the best guitar riffs ever marching through the song. Don’t get me wrong I really like this album but Transylvania was the first time on the album where I felt it sounded like heavy metal and not just heavy rock still though brilliant instrumental. Strange world is a brilliant slow aftermath to Transylvania’s rage I really like this one! Charlotte the harlot is probably my least favourite on the album but I still don’t hate it which is a sign of a good album. The bands title track closes the album on fairly good note, it’s not a lyrical great but certainly an instrumental great. It’s really good 4/5 but that could rise with time.
Loved this. Not sure I'd heard it before.
Sometimes I forgot there was on Iron Maiden before the Iron Maiden I know. This is good but such a different sound than what I came to love 'em for.
Tight. Really loved that about these guys. Hearing this in HS was really the first time I heard that kind of harmony soloing. Good stuff.
Great debut from a legendary heavy metal band, but I personally prefer the era starting from The Number of the Beast in part due to the production here being a little flat. Highlights: Remember Tomorrow, Phantom of the Opera
Full disclosure- Iron Maiden is my favorite band of all time. They’re the act that got me into metal, and music as a whole. It’s hard for me to be objective about them. But at the same time, the first Maiden album is kind of a mixed bag. The songs themselves are incredible- Steve Harris’ ear for melody, riffs and harmony were evident from the very beginning. And while I know that he was waiting for a muse with a stronger range, Di’Anno’s performances are on point throughout. However, the album’s production is hollow as sin, making its tracks have a fraction of the power they deserve. Meeting halfway, it’s a B+ for me. They’ll get much more right with their follow-up. On another note, it’s absurd that Maiden only has 2 albums in this book, and this is one of them. We really don’t need 4 Metallicas, especially not And Justice for Mid. That should be swapped for Killers or Powerslave, easy.
The first album of a legendary career; dare I even say the greatest metal band of all time? It has a couple spots where the songwriting could be tighter, but overall this is a great album/
Killer, classic metal!
I was stuck between 3 & 4 stars. Subjectively, they just aren’t really my sound or style. Objectively, I think the album was really well done. Additionally, they utilize interesting song structure, chord progressions/rhythms, and mixing.
Fun, the transitions are actually entertaining! Love the hard hitting sound without chugging
Good album. The songs are great sounds kinda like a standard hard rock album from the 70's
Its funny cause we view iron maiden as so heavy and they were for the time but now it just sounds like hard rock in the context of the music landscape now. Really solid though
Pretty bangin. 7/10. Fun tunes to try to shred on sax shabaka style, dope metric mods, extremely indicative of the entire genre.
