Some gems, some filler. Ahead of the curve as ever and slightly odd for the Thin White Duke to predict the urban sould of the early 80's.

A great Bowie album. I enjoy the foray into plastic/blue eyed soul.

Bowie does "plastic soul"? Yeah, I'm here for it! I do love an artist that explores different genres, and Bowie's somewhat of an archetype in that area. Fave track - "Fame" is awesome, obvs. The overwrought cover of "Across the Universe" is good for a laugh. "John, I'm Only Dancing" is a bonus track, but it's great, so I'm mentioning it...

I can't really blame Bowie for being inspired by late 60s and early 70s soul music, but Young Americans is soul the way that the Bee Gee's Main Course is soul or 3 Dog Night is soul, that is, not so much. Only Fame is genuinely funky. I remember feeling a bit queasy when the other hit on the album, Young Americans, used to come on the radio. I was uncomfortable with how much fuss people made about it when much better real soul music came and went in a matter of weeks. But ain't that always the way it is? And come to think about it, part of what bothers me so much about the 1001 list is how colonialist it is, how small-minded, how parochial, giving an inordinate amount of space to anything white, male or anglophile and when they do include music which isn't, more often than not, it's a compromised, bastardized token example. Anyway, enough of my bitching. The rest of the album, with the exception of Fame, is just as inconsequential as the title cut. I will say that the session players acquit themselves quite well, and the album is beautifully recorded. I mean, the album isn't actively unpleasant to listen to, but this is a pretty shallow take on soul. Still, the only outright stinker is the out-of-place Beatles cover Across the Universe. I know it's fashionable to venerate Bowie these days, but not everything he did was wonderful, e.g. the Thin White Puke years. I'm just glad Bowie got Young Americans out of his system and went on to make the Berlin trilogy.

Pop rock. No está mal

I’m a bigger fan of the Thin White Duke than other Bowies, but Luther Vandross was a backup singer on this album. I mean, damn.

I love Bowie. This one is a good one, can't wait for his next in the list. He was just showing off on this album. What an artist.

This isn't my favourite Bowie album but I still enjoyed it. Didn't much care for the cover of Across the Universe but other than that a solid listen.

Fame was the outstanding track for me but I did enjoy the album so low 4*

Was expecting more from this following years of Bowie hype. 70s pop with some nice instrumental layers. All a bit too similar for me. Stand out tracks - Fame Young Americans

Man, there' s a lot of juicy sax on this album. And a trippy Beatles cover. And even a John Lennon collab. This is about as 70s Bowie as it gets.

Surprisingly loved this one.

This is quite an album. It showcases songs that have become absolute cultural icons - Young American, Fame - and others I am not as familiar with but are very good. Did not realize John Lennon was on this album, and I was not familiar with the Across the Universe cover.

Bowie in transition. Always surprised he didn't stick with this sound for a couple more albums being as it was successful commercially, but he just kept on mutating. This is like a sort of musical palette cleanser between main courses/phases of his career. Also, definitely worth pairing this with the "Gouster" outtakes of the same period from the "Who Can I Be Now" box set.

First and last songs are probably the best, but this isn't quite the best Bowie era for me. It has those glimmers of greatness but isn't quite there yet for me. 3.5 down to 3.

Soul/Funk/R&B Bowie style. Great album, from start to finish. Fascination and Fame funky favourites.

Love Bowie but prefer Diamond Dogs.

Very enjoyable. Title track is great, other songs are slightly below it quality-wise but are still quite good. Overall good album I will definitelly return to.

If you refer to my Heroes review you’ll note my assertion that Young Americans is one of my fave Bowie albums. So now you’re thinking, ‘alright big shot, pull down your kecks and swing it for us.’ The real charm of this is the whole thing is so damned fun. It all feels like a big old celebration. There are some beautiful soul like backing vocals across the whole thing. It’s hella 80s but doesn’t feel stuck in the time or formulaic. I’ve gotta be in a certain mood to stick this on so it doesn’t make a 5 as I believe 5s must transcend moods.

Am I going to give this 3 stars (because it’s Bowie)? Or 2 stars (because, bar the opening and the closing tracks, nothing caught my ears - whilst I have no doubts of Bowie’s genius for taste-making and breaking new ground, it’s hard to find anything compelling in that new ground being broken. Is that the lot of the forerunner? To create something that will inevitably be surpassed by those who follow in the scanty track you beat through the brush? Experimentation and marked departures are vital, of course, but the product will be just that: experimental and a marked departure. That doesn’t equal good. Fame is a great song, though. There is that to consider.)? I’ll give it two stars.

Five hours at Ventnor Botanic Gardens. Would happily do it all again. Steely Dan provided the soundtrack - Countdown to Ecstasy.

The two singles are classics, but the rest is quite forgettable. Not a fan of his Lennon cover either.

I was a little disappointed by this compared to Ziggy Stardust, but it was still a very good album. 8/10

Probably one of the few instances where Bowie’s voice made something worse. The instrumentals were all so good but the timbre of his voice is so nasal and thin that it just doesn’t fit over the funky/soulful beats. Still great though. 9

never really liked Bowie

Bowie's a god, but it really felt like every song consistently went on 2 minutes too long.

A nice album. I was reading that Bowie catalogued this as a phase after having done extensive touring across the US and getting more into soul music. As far as I know there are not any other albums from him that take on this style of music as much as this one. And he does it quite nicely for having come from such different styles over his previous albums.

Even though this isn't the genre I typically listen to, the energy of this album made me want to get up and dance. Particularly liked the trumpet/brass instruments and the powerful vocals.

It's not one of his most iconic albums but but I do like a bit of Bowie. Nothing mindblowing but a solid, enjoyable album that I'd probably buy if I came across in a charity shop

Fame is my favourite song, I think I might do it for karaoke. Maybe not. But I love the lush American glam vibe Bowie has in this album of the late 70s. V sexy.

Cool. Bowie exudes cool throughout this whole record. Lots of funk, soul and jazz influences on every track. Plus, we get a Beatles cover AND a Beatle!

It was alright, but not fantastic. I've probably only heard a few songs from this album before but I probably wouldn't remember them if I had heard them at some point. The majority of the album was quite forgettable. Except the Beatles cover. I'll try in vain to forget that one!

Kinda disappointed with this one. I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as I thought I would. Definitely not the best from Bowie.

Some great hits but the others weren’t that impressive

I'm familiar with individual tracks from Bowie, such as "Young Americans" and "Fame" from this album. I haven't listened to full albums. A little much on the saxophone, a few creepy lyrics and an overall sound that doesn't draw me in. I hate these albums where I'm not sure if it's "okay" (3 stars) or if I didn't like it enough to say "don't like" (2 stars)

Bowie does it again. A masterpiece and an ESSENTIAL soul reinvention in his discography. "Fame" is a PERFECT song.

Never made it through the first song. I tried twice.

The title-track of this album is an absolute masterpiece of a song. Apart from the second track, most of the others were very good too, although not quite at the same level of brilliance as Young Americans. Still, all-round a great artist with a great album.

Not my favorite entry of Bowie's, but blue-eyed soul Bowie is more than a novelty. He does the genres justice, and I think blends R&B, Soul, and Rock typically deftly, even if the songwriting isn't on par with previous or subsequent records. I love it, but it's without a doubt a cocaine-driven transitional record between the Ziggy era and the Berlin Years-two iterations i prefer to this one. Fascination stood out to me as a forgotten bop.

I can't believe I'm giving  Bowie a rating I would give to mere mortals. The hits never really rocked my boat which resulted in my not listening to the album much. It's a good listen but, for me, I can't give a higher rating. 

I mostly enjoyed this, I've discovered the closer Bowie gets to his "Fame" vibe the more I enjoy him. Big tune.

I didn't think I liked Bowie albums, just his good songs. But this was good. Enjoyable all the way through. Interesting.

David Sanborn really adds a lot to the album from the very first song. His licks in the background make the song so much better. Although I didn’t dislike any songs, so though Win was kind of boring. Fascination is a great funk song and I love the effects on the sax. The cover of Across the Universe is good although I don’t like it as much as the Beatles version. Favorite songs: Young Americans, Fascination, Somebody up There Likes Me, Fame Least favorite song: Win Decent 8/10

Great album!

Bowie's first "funk" foray. "Fame" is a groovin' classic!

David Bowie sure had an ability to sense trends in music and remake himself on the turn of a dime. I appreciate this album and its more soulful feel, but I'm more of a Ziggy Stardust kind of guy where the music felt a little more experimental and less derivative.

The regular hits are great, plus I really like the song Win. Apparently not a well-liked Bowie album but considered very influential.

Fantastic album. Listened to as a whole, you can hear the influence from 70's funk and r&b. When I think of 80's multiculturalism, I think of this album.

A Bowie high mark

_Young Americans_ - hmm! Apparently this album was the first non-glam record for Bowie, and the record itself has an interesting history. _Young Americans_ and _Fame_ are the songs that stand out, the rest...don’t.

Genius, Become successful doing glam rock. Then completely change the style and genre. And knock it out the park again. Album flows magnificently. Songs are all on point. Bowie did this in 1975 influenced by funk. Everyone else followed in the 80s. Peerless 5/5

Hmmm, couple of tracks saved this from being a 2/5

Released in 1975 it moved away from Glam and you can hear influences from blues, soul mixed with rock origins. Standout tracks for me title track and Fame.

Across the Universe. Funk, sax..

This is my least favorite Bowie album of the 70s. There are some great songs, especially Right, and not too many artists can say that James Brown “sampled” one of their songs, but the softer soulful numbers don’t do it for me and I never liked the title track. I would give it a 4 but the cover of Across the Universe is SO out of place, unlike the Stones cover on Aladdin Sane.

Feels like unknown or early (though not really at all) bowie. I never listened to him much honestly outside of his hits. I liked it enough to play it again. Album had some pleasant songs, maybe one or two I recognized. I liked it fine, but I feel pretty neutral about it over all.

Very 70's sounding. Reminded me of porn in some places. I rarely listen to these Bowie tunes so it was surprising to hear them again. This isn't my favorite stuff from him.

Gotta love fashion and style maven Bowie for his chameleon-like changes every few albums. The only other musician that I can think of that does it as well is Neil Young and he's a bloody legend also. However, in this "Soul" phase apart from the wonderful single Young Americans and the lovely song Right, this album has quite a few misses, especially the execrable Fame. Gawd I hate that song. So some great, some bad, some ok means this is 3 stars from me.

Fair to good Bowie. Fame is the highlight. Liked that he covered a Lennon song while having him guest on a different tune.

Starts with a great positivity, becomes a little self indulgent and morose in the middle, finishes brilliantly with Fame.

This was an eclectic sounding record I have to say, from the music to the lyrics. First time ever hearing it. Top 3 Win, Fame, and Can you Hear Me. 3 of 5

Loved it! Great stuff!

Good titular opening track. For a short album of only 8 tracks, most songs felt like they dragged out longer than they should have. The funk infused bass, guitar, and sax was welcome. This took a hard left turn at Across the Universe and started to lose coherency afterward, but came back around and closed strong with Fame.

Not really my thing. The last song "Fame" was the only one that felt like it had any soul to it. The rest was fairly generic to me. This may be a result of me not listening to it "in the moment" and thus appreciating any novelty or inspiration given to future artists.

This isn't my favorite Bowie period. That being said, I still enjoy the album.

I like this album... I want to love it and be cool and call myself a huge Bowie fan. But besides the singles not much else got me too amped... I like the Across the Universe cover. Someone Up There Likes Me is fun. If I gave this higher than a 3 I think I'd be faking the funk to try and look cool.

4.5 | Después de una etapa en la que explotó todo el glam a lo más que dio retira por completo a Ziggy y lanza antes de la era de Berlin 3 discos - Diamond Dogs, Station to Station y Young Americans, en los que ahora el personaje principal es frio y distante, siempre vestido impecable y acicalado, sin emociones y modelado al mero fascismo. De los tres discos este es el que a mi parecer menos me agrada, sin embargo sigue siendo un disco excelente, se siente el Soul a todo lo que da y uno pensaría que es un artista que lleva trabajando el género toda su vida, no que fuera su primer experimentación en el mismo. Abrir con la que a mi parecer es la mejor canción del disco puede ser algo difícil de seguir pero hay suficiente material para defenderse muy bien, Fascination le mete un sonido "torcido" al funk que no se escucha en ningún otro lado, Across the Universe es en mi opinión el mejor cover de la canción y cambia por completo el sentido y emoción de la misma y Fame es simplemente genial, sea cual fuera el grado de la colaboración de Lennon lo que es cierto es que es totalmente mordaz y la manera de cantarla, ese sonido de una voz engreída y detestable no podría quedar mejor con la letra y lo vacia que hace ver a la fama como tal, al escuchar la canción no puedes mas que querer darle un madrazo en la boca al que la canta y creo es justamente el punto de la misma. Otro disco de Bowie, otro disco genial y, aun sin llegar a ser de los mejores materiales que hizo, demuestra la calidad de artista y versatilidad que tuvo.

Not really my jam, but a couple good tunes

i don’t think i’ve ever actually listened to bowie other than “heroes” and the other, obvious singles. definitely a different vibe than i figured. after some incredibly brief research, i found out that this was a change from bowie’s previous glam rock style and leaned more towards an r&b and soul vibe.

Este Bowie es mucho más fácil de consumir y me gusta mucho. Buenos arreglos con el piano y el sax. No todas las canciones son extraordinarias, resaltan para mi Right y Fascination. Young Americans y Fame son las obligadas y eso es la mitad del disco ya, sin embargo el cover de Across no me encanta y las demás están bien. 4 estrellas.

The hits from this album are as big as ever but I’m surprised by some that I hadn’t ever heard. “Right” is great, funky bass and rhythm. No Ziggy on this one. For better or worse. 4.5

It’s so good. Even the deep cuts are fantastic, but the singles are otherworldly.

Finding out that a) I know more Bowie than I realized and b) he’s got a haunting sound similar to that of Jeff Buckley...

Was a huge fan of this "Plastic Soul" album during my Bowie phase (I spent the lion's share of my graduation gift money on his albums). This one made him something of a favored son in Philly which made it kind of special when I saw him twice there on his "farewell" tour. "They've cleaned up the Italian Market!" he shouted from the stage. Favorite is Win. Cassette flip side was tvc15 I believe.

not my favorite bowie but still pretty cool. catchy but not as consistent. It's cool to see him switch his style up, but it's clear it's not as honed as it could be. Maybe his later projects in this style will have catchier songwriting and more polished instrumentation. favorite songs: young americans across the universe fame

More "funk" than other Bowie. The saxaphone is smooth and not as piercing. Easy listening compared to what I usually listen to..

I've never listened much to David Bowie outside of his major hits, but I was captivated by the very first song; excited to hear the rest of it! Win - Absolutely loved. Great song. Fascination - was aight. Would listen to again Right - was groovy! Loved it. Somebody up There Likes Me, the chords used here are really great. Head bopper for sure. Can You Hear Me Across The Universe cover?! Featuring John Lennon on guitar and back-up vocals? A solid take! Enjoyed. ^^Reflecting on his contribution, Lennon later said: "I thought, great, because I'd never done a good version of that song myself. It's one of my favourite songs, but I didn't like my version of it." Bowie concurred, calling the Beatles' original version "very watery" and wanting to "hammer the hell out of it." - Wikipedia Can You Hear Me - Reminded me of Jimi Hendrix. Good track. Fame - Classic Bowie track I've listened to before, sounds a bit different from the rest of the album tonally, but a fine addition to end the album on. This album just made me a David Bowie fan. Great listening experience all around. Definitely coming back to this.

Good, not my kind of album

Bowie provides some funk but not quite enough to label it as such, also the Beatles cover throws me off.

Really enjoyed how free and emotional everything felt. All the songs were pretty long which I don’t always like, but the music was given a lot of time to breathe in between the lyrics which really just fit the feel of everything really well. Great album ❤️

Started out this album thinking what is it with Bowie and this kind of jazzy overproduced pop, why is this the huge deal but as a whole it really is such an iconic rock sound of it's era. Superb deceptively simple lyrics too.

Could’ve been a 5 if not for that Across The Universe massacre

Ok, le daré un 3 a este disco. Me gustó que es un poco más 'Funk', y no se siente tan pesado de escuchar. Tengo sentimientos mezclados sobre la versión Across the Universe. El arreglo de la canción está padre, pero no me gusta que en algunas partes usa su "voz espacial" toda pretenciosa. Definitivamente volvería a escuchar el disco, por eso lo califico con tres.

Aunque Bowie es raro creo que este disco es el mas raro, su incursión por la música dominada por Afroamericanos es magnífica. Si no fuera por su peculiar voz y estilo ni me hubiera percatado de que era un disco de Bowie. Gran disco y deja claro lo multifacético que era el cabrón.

Es un gran disco que en primer lugar demuestra la capacidad de Bowie de prácticamente cambiar de género y seguir haciendo algo que suena perfecto. En lo personal me gusta más la época de Glam o Rockandroll, pero de todas maneras el sonido de R&B, Soul y Funk que trae este disco es una chulada. Me encanto el cover a Across The Universe porque transofrma una canción que es hippie y con su onda hindú a algo totalmente Soul súperelaborado. Por otro lado, Fame tiene un algo, que no sé identificar, que hace que me caiga mal.

The fact that this coke binge is responsible for catapulting Bowie to a worldwide audience is fucking absurd. Hiring a bunch of black artists as a backdrop to your weird limey crooning isnt Soul music. Fuck off with this garbage.

Incredible synth funk

This was a good listen but some of the funky tracks were a little same-sounding to each other

This is probably my favorite Bowie album.

First he conquered Britain in a variety of guises from spaceman to glam god. Now comes the hard part: conquering America. He'd already planted a path to get him there, all he had to do was walk on it and be on his way; on his way he'd be. Having proven himself to be a master musical chameleon, Bowie channeled the soul emanating from Philadelphia and nearby and unleashed upon an unsuspecting audience a most genuine homage to the finest spectrum of black art available. Was it yet another short-lived foray into what tickled Bowie's fancy? Sure but the conquering of another nation was another thing to check off the list. Nobody knew, however, the cost of that would be.

Even though Bowie is kinda overrepresented on this list, all his albums here are fantastic, and this one is no different.
