Meh. middle of the road, not bad, but didn't grab me
Garbage - Garbage Actually not garbage. This is quite a neat punk-esque rock album to listen. It gets a little bit inconsistent in the middle of the album, but at the end it goes back on track. The songs on it sound really bloomy and nostalgic, in a good way to be honest. Overall, it's a really fun album to listen and, this is good! 1.- Supervixen = 8/10 2.- Queer = 8/10 3.- Only Happy When It Rains = 8/10 4.- As Heaven Is Wide = 7/10 5.- Not My Idea = 7/10 6.- A Stroke of Luck = 9/10 7.- Vow = 7/10 8.- Stupid Girl = 9/10 9.- Dog New Tricks = 7/10 10.- My Lover's Box = 9/10 11.- Fix Me Now = 8/10 12.- Milk = 8/10 FINAL SCORE: 7.9/10

Albumi #135, 15.12.2024 Garbagen esikoisalbumi oli kovassa kuuntelussa ilmestyessään inttivuotena.
Mm, I'unno about this one. I was excited to get into this 'coz I really liked "I Think I'm Paranoid", the big single from their next album, but listening to their debut here... It's just not doing it for me, honestly? A bit more of it than I like just kinda flew by me. I've been tryna pin down what it is. Well, I've seen this album labelled as dance-rock... Maybe this is the wrong kind of dance music for me? 'Coz I've loved my fair share across its many different flavors. But here, it can be a little too... "Trip hop" for my tastes? A little chill and trance-like; not the kind of thing that regularly grabs my attention. Really, it doesn't surprise me that my favorite tracks ("Only Happy When It Rains", "Stupid Girl" — of course I gravitate towards the singles) sounded way more rockin' to my ears — an', heck, from what I read, "I Think I'm Paranoid" isn't even dance-rock, so what does **that** tell yah, eh? Frankly, it's those two songs that're pulling this thing up to a 3. It's just not my thing. Like, I was really comin' in here thinkin' I was gonna be the trash man, eatin' up Garbage — and for a couple songs, sure. But on the whole, I'm good.
Read the lyrics. So good
Not entirely garbage. Actually, very OK. 3/5
Never heard the album before. Okay album with some noteworthy hits. Otherwise not that remarkable.
It has a splattering of good songs interspersed with pretty average songs. It is neither great nor terrible. I would listen to it again but never really seek the album out. Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 but not worthy of 4 stars
The music was fine, but not memorable, even the hit. 3.5
Unremarkable and inoffensive.

Not bad
Another one that I owned on cd in middle school
First listen. Ok.
It was OK, a bit of a dirge...
Queer was almost like a gay anthem but i think its more homophobic than that. Unless you like being called like weird ig? Oh these are some sad songs, Dog New Tricks sure is good bad sad
Favorite Track: Only Happy When It Rains
Blast from the past! Enjoyed revisiting this album
I have always kind of wrote off Garbage so I wasn’t expecting much from this album, but I may been wrong. Enjoyed this more than I thought I would.
Solid debut. A few bangers.
Production consistently amazing. Songwriting dips in quality a LOT. Still pleasant and fun tho
3.5
Bueno
Listening to the album has kind of cemented Garbage as the sort of band that occupies the middle ground of 90s britpop*. Also-there's. Nothing is terrible. There are a couple of big hits. But they're music is never going to be something at the forefront of my mind. *I know they're American with Shirley ... but that's never how they were marketed.
Not a one word review using the band name. If more songs hit me like #1 Crush, I'd put this at a 4. But they did not not. And I'm not clear if that was on the original release. Either way, some good stuff, but not 3nough for me to seek out more.
Plastical, artificial, sexy, materialistic, often awfully cheesy but more often catchy as hell. Predicted Marilyn Manson‘s sound of „Chemical Animals“. An essential 90‘s thingy - still often to be found on fleamarkets.
I do like the singer she has a great bad ass presence. The music borders on sounding like commercial heavy rock a bit too much. I bet they may be good live.
Thank you for the new band I’m gonna obsess about for a month.
Vissa bra, vissa meh
25/10/24 Average listen.
Лучшая песня - Only Happy When It Rains.
It was a good album for the time, though not very great
Good production for a puesdo grunge sound, I wouldn’t play it again tho!
It’s okay, not really my thing. Some stand outs but nothing did a whole lot for me instrumentally or vocally.
Overall: 6/10 Pretty decent alt rock from the 90s, nothing stood out as amazing to me but it does a good job of blending rock with some electronic elements and the songs are consistently fun to listen to. Fav Song:Queer Least Fav Song: Supervixen
Fairly bland, found myself falling asleep. I don't doubt that people who like this kind of music will think this a cracking album, but it was all a bit moist for me.
Nothing remarkable but a fun listen nonetheless. 3/5.
nice pop rock
Pure 90s rock/grunge/pop combination. Parts of it are reminiscent of Prodigy, with its upbeat dance rhythms with electronic instrumentation. The overall vibe is pretty good and reminds me of my yesteryears, but this wasn't a group I was particularly drawn to while younger and I can't say that feeling is any different now. This record, and band, has its place in music history but it's nothing too memorable from my perspective.
það er eitthvað þarna
hmmm, interesting. Stoked to check this out. I do know a couple of tracks off this album. I know these guys are pretty legendary, not really my type of music. I do enjoy the tracks I do know, the singles.
this was the first album i ever ripped onto a computer and copied for a friend #limewire
Fun album, but a bit repetitive by the end.
Album is not holding up particularly well over time. I think it is the lyrics that truly need more work.
Wijs album. Only Happy When It Rains en Stupid Girl zijn echt wel schijte goeie nummers. Na dit te beluisteren, zijn Queer en Vow ook wel best goed. 3.4
90er halt.
I hear a lot of influences on this album. Especially from the 80s, like Talk Talk, the Cure and Killing Joke, but the result sounds very 90s. The album starts of with a couple of big hits. The middle is... I wouldn't say garbage, but not as good. Towards the end it gets better again. Favorite song: Queer.
Definetely not my kind of jam. There are a few tracks that i may save in my Spotify account, but didn'd really enjoy the album. I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics though, so i didnt get into the album rythm and ethos if such rythm and ethos exist. Great to have playing during work, but i didn't find anything remarkable about it. Songs that i liked: Track 9 - Dog New Tricks Track 10 - My Lover's Box Songs that i didn'd like: Track 1 - Supervixen Track 2 - Queer
Garbage is good for the most part but I only really like it in places. Songs where she mumbles in an attempt to be seductive or whatever and then gets into full voice at the chorus don't really appeal to me, but when they get into a groove from the start and let go a bit, Vow, Only Happy When it Rains, Stupid Girl, they're a lot better. A solid 3, just some of the stylistic choices aren't my favourite.
Not garbage, quite good actually. Milk sounded vaguely familiar, but I hadn't heard the rest before. It's pretty solid female-fronted electro rock, more PJ Harvey than No Doubt in the most part. It's pretty catchy, lyrics are in the most part worth listening to, high 3. Probably would've been a 4 if I had any nostalgia for it.
a comfy listen albeit unmemorable. i feel like this is more impressive as a pop album than a rock album
indie Pop/Rock, 1995 -> 3
It was just OK
næntís blanda af raftónlistarbítum og indírokki. mjög misjafnt að gæðum. bestu lögin skemmtileg, of langt. þarf ekki meira.
Queer Only Happy When It Rains Vow Stupid Girl
Alternative bands from the 90s with one word names tend to blend into one for me and I initially struggled to remember anything from this one apart from Stupid Girl. However, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the more down tempo tracks on this that edged into shoegaze/trip hop territory, with the highlight for me being A Stroke of Luck with Shirley Manson’s voice flowing like warm honey. Lovely stuff.
It’s another one of ‘those’ albums (I’ll have to think of a name for them) that are nice to play in the background, and are representative of their genre, but do not go much further past it. I’m positive if I paid more attention rather than just putting it on whilst I did work then it’d be more interesting. But how much more interesting? It really does seem like average, inoffensive alt-rock, perhaps a product of its time, perhaps timeless. I’m not sure of the specifics. What I do know is that it’s at least ‘alright’.
"Dad, what did music in the late 90s sound like?" This is actually like a 3.5.
The through line of a band or musician breaking into the mainstream, often building on risk-takers who came before, that then result in a dozen market-driven copy-cats is as reliable as the sun coming up every day. Pixies --> Nirvana --> Silverchair X-Ray Specs --> Sleater Kinney -->Avril Lavigne While I'm sure Shirley Manson has loads more autonomy than the average boy-band member, there's still something so slick and market-ready about Garbage. Sure, the music is catchy (if dated) with vaguely subversive lyrics - but I just don't *buy* any of it. Like, when PJ Harvey sings 'you leave me dry,' or Courtney Love screams 'when they get what they want, and they never want it again,' I *believe* it. With Garbage's music, not so much.
A nice sound, an album of it too much but sprinkled on a playlist all songs welcome.
Interesting, a bit funky. Not bad.
Pretty solid ‘90s alt rock with noisier elements thrown in sometimes. It doesn’t blow me away and it goes a bit from one ear to another but nothing bad. The stops in the first song were a bit distracting. 3 stars.
Good rock! Has a little punk to it
3.5
Solid but inessential 90s alt-rock. 3.5/5
Released in 1995 when the alternative rock boom was winding down and it wasn't clear what the next big trend in rock was going to be. As result, it incorporates some sounds that were big at the time, but ultimately feels very dated. "Vow" is great, and the other big singles are decent, but as a whole the album is just okay. 3.5 stars.
Pretty dated production with lots of slightly limp techno dance beats and gimmicky effects particularly on the first track with the harsh, sucking gated gaps of silence. There a few pretty good songs and I do like Shirley’s suave, slightly snarly Madonna vocals but really it is just Stupid Girl that is the standout for me. 6.0
I liked it. But not my favorite.
SOOOOO 90's. After Kurt Cobain died it was like every band started using those trip hop drumbeats and synths. Crazy, mang. I actually kind of like the whole "dark neo noir"-ish aesthetic they have going on here, and some of the arrangements are quite nice, but besides that it's pretty standard angsty alt rock affair with some electronic influence. I guess the occasional tonal turns that mix major and minor modes (like "Not My Idea") are pretty cool too? But too same-y and not captivating enough to be great.
Didn’t hate it, but nothing really stood out to me.
Stupid Girl I've heard before, just didn't realize it was Garbage! Interesting alt rock pieces.
Pretty good album, I liked her rock songs more than the other stuff she was playing though.
This album was mid. Was pleasantly surprised from my lower expectations.
It was fine.
Thoughts before listening: Garbage is one of those bands where I like their hits, but in general its not for me. I think with multiple producers in the band their sound just comes off as too polished and overproduced. I'm sure I'll add the hits to my playlist though. Review: Yep, just how I remember this band. The hits are definitely catchy, but its just too "perfect". There is no grit to their music which sounds exactly like what it is: a bunch of people who make a living producing alt-rock hits getting together to write their own album. With this coming a day after getting Public Image Ltd, I can say that for the most part, I prefer this sound to PiL which was trying very hard to be anti-pop music. Although I will say that I prefer PiL's 2 best songs to anything I heard here...maybe its the shock value of finally hearing something enjoyable on that album as opposed to Garbage where everything basically sounds the same. Anyway, this is a 3-star album.
Nice work. I think I liked stuff from other albums of theirs better.
Like the album, Some are a bit melancholic
Classic alternative album. Doubt I’ll listen to again. I’ve heard stupid girl a ton on the radio but there’s a reason I’ve never chosen to sit and listen to it and actually seek it out
For an album called garbage by a group called garbage, it isn't garbage.
Honestly a really well made and produced album. I really enjoyed it. Reminds me of being in 5th grade and hanging out with Billy and Carls older sisters
didn't hate it or love it. a lot like PJ Harvey IMO 3/5.
3.5 rounded down just didn’t connect w this one idk highlights: queer, only happy when it rains, stupid girl (aug 16 2024)
Not bad really. It holds up.
Some good songs. Wasn't a massive fan back then and I haven't been converted I'm afaraid.
There are tracks on this album that sound too much like an American version of triphop, which I don't like. At other times, it's *painfully* 90s. But it gets a small ratings bump for still somehow not sounding like much else at the time. That said, it felt like a racing game soundtrack.
I’m Only Happy When it Rains. very 90’s.
Vocals didn’t age wel, nor did the synth drums but overall enjoyed it. The last 4 tracks could have just been cut.
Okay debut from Garbage.
Bowie’s good of course, kinda bores me half the time though
5/10, я не понял, но вроде норм
Didn’t like it. Poor audio production.
Average alternative Rock. Okay to listen to.
that 90s edge is going on full here
Hot girl vibes
Quintessentially 90s sounding indie rock. The hits are the strongest tracks for me, and whilst a nice nostalgia trip, I probably won't be listening on repeat
Good album. It feels very 90s post-grunge with some really cool arrangements and good pop sensibility from the vocals, etc. It's got some techno-ish stuff, which feels very of that time. There's many really solid songs, but, as a whole, it doesn't feel or sound exceptional to me. ***
Not entirely garbage as the name suggests.
Overall this album is full of cool rock music, however I found the end of many songs to just repeat the same line a bunch. Liked Songs: Supervixen, Queer, Stupid Girl, Only Happy When It Rains I'll consider this a high 3/5.
My mum used to listen to this so there's a bit of nostalgia. It sounds very dated now, and you can definitely hear the smashing pumpkins influence.
Good in parts
This album had a nice blend of different sounds and styles. It combines the quirkiness of alt rock with the catchiness of pop (and other genres) which gave it a decent amount of bangers.
Very 90s, takes me back! Enjoyed it.
The mix sounds like a first album. I was always more of a 2.0 guy but there are some solid tracks here that hold up.
supervixen - 8/10 so original sounding to me I liked that queer - 7.5/10 ngl she has a hot af voice only happy when it rains - 6.5/10 nice but not a standout really as heaven is wide - 7/10 solid baseline not my idea - 6.5/10 also nice but lyrics r boring a stroke of luck - 8/10 such a vibe vow - 6.5/10 vibe but not as much stupid girl - 7.5/10 it's a bop dog new tricks - 7.5/10 gorgeous song my lovers box - fix me now - 8.5/10 sheesh banger milk - 7/10 I like her singing here overall thoughts - very different to what i regularly listen to (this album is like alt rock/indie) but i really liked this. guitars great and like the lead vocalists voice but im no glazer so tbh i do think it's not an album that sounds out too much amongst what i think are great albums, but i still like this.
I should love this as a child of the 90s, and yet I still can't get behind this kind of a rock sound. A couple of tracks were interesting, but I found most of it unoriginal and a bit too similar to other stuff I've heard from that decade. The closer was really nice, though. 3 stars
When I was 15, I wrote an erotic (porno) story that involved myself and Shirley Manson. My sister who was younger found it screwed up in my wastepaper bin and tried to blackmail me with it. Anyway, great album but meant more as a moody teenager with a high libido.
this is not garbage in the slightest, some great alt rock with dance and electronic influence. lots of forward thinking lyrics that are hidden within the deeper cuts of this album, worth a listen simply to listen.
A good album that represents a specific time well. Some good tracks
Mostly not garbage. A mix of bangers and boring stuff
I wouldn't call it garbage. Some sounds like Prodigy with a female lead, others just run of the mill 90s alt rock to me.
Reverby Good vocals Not garbage
2 1/2 (y)
Great album
Good not great
Was surprised at how familiar it was. Must have owned it at some point, but also played it a fair bit. Overproduced, but pretty good all told. Poppy, cool and arch. I liked it, might listen to some tracks again soon.
Brought back a lot of memories. Saw Garbage last year and the band was just as tight. Shirley Manson is a real star.
More about the zeitgeist than the music. Good enough though.
welcome to the 90s. perfect for a chill, sunny sunday afternoon spent drinking and playing d&d
not garbage
FAVO: Onyl happy when it rains, Vow, stupid girl, Milk
Haven't listened to Garbage in years, not my favourite from back in the day some good tracks though. - stupid girl - Milk - Queer
This was some perfectly fine alt-rock. Didn't love it, but it was solid. 3.3
A few bangers but the other songs sound too noisy for me. Nostalgic.
Had a lot of fun with this, I could definitely see it growing on me over time - no major complaints, just nothing in it that blew me away!
Fun and good vibes but not a lot of staying power for me
Pretty solid but ultimately not my style!
I don't know if it's because they've had an outsized impact or what but listening to it in 2024 the album sounds cringe and derivative
solid stuff, unfamiliar with the hits/singles but I liked most of em. they've got a cool ass sound and the sheer 90sness of it all adds to the charm a lot but in some places is a bit obnoxious imo. overlong as well imo. great voice tho with some good tracks. Probably won’t rly return to this though. 6/10
Pretty solid stuff here from garbage. Didn’t enjoy everything but enjoyed most of it.
Huh. Wasn’t expecting this to be on the list. It’s a solid album, but i don’t recall it being the “innovative” Album so many did, especially given what the early 90’s produced. This seemed almost tame and ultra-accessible after loads of breakthrough, genre defying and defining albums and bands. Garbage was a safe band one could tap their foot to while proclaiming your “alt” cred.
I found the album to be nothing special relative to the music coming out at the same time.
3/5 - I get it, but it’s not my thing
It rocked
Tönt interessant aber packt mich nicht. Vielleicht auch alles zu seiner Zeit.
More like recycling because it was fine
Best nice
Nostalgia and good
Strong album and very representative of the era. Not groundbreaking but solid. Love Shirley Manson on vocals.
Yep. This one was in the repertoire but not on too much repeat. Half good, half not.
Good
Typical 90’s alt rock
Instantly recognisable. Love the guitar drones / moody riffs Sounds very of its time with the electronic sounding drums and production style but it’s a banger
Consistently enjoyable alternative rock record with some electronic and gothic elements sprinkled in. I do wish it was a little bit more ambitious in its production, but I really enjoyed the songs ‘Queer’ and ‘Only Happy When it Rains’
Wow this is garbage. The band, I mean! This was an enjoyable album, classic 90's fare. Also Only Happy When It Rains was used in the period film, Captain Marvel so that was cool. This felt like the album Liz Phair was trying to make yesterday, a really good brooding alternative album. That underground garbage.
5/10
Favourites: supervixen, queer, only happy when it rains, not my idea, vow, milk. Not bad but not my favorite. 3/5
Bless up Big Youth laying it down with Facts of Life. Riddim is Delano Stewart's That's Life. Big Youth does the business 🔥🔥
Very middle of the road. Wannabe pixies and hole.
It started off a bit slow and I thought this would be an album I would be a bit ambivalent towards, but it really picks up after a couple of songs and by the end is quite an engaging listen.
3.5/5
Probably deserves a better listen, but as of now. 2.5/5
it’s not garbage
Was fun and futuristic, not as good as the followup album but pretty good.
Мусор 7/10
I wanted to dislike this because a bad review for Garbage by Garbage writes itself. Unfortunately, I didn’t mind it. A little repetitive; not a lot of variety of tone or feel, but they do miserable and dreary very well.
Not garbage, but not amazing either. Simpsons: No
# 222 : There a reason why its called garbage… Not bad, absolutely fine to have playing during work. But there's nothing remarkable about it either. There’s some solid music here but I still feel kind of meh about it Favourite Track : Stupid Girl
29 years!
Some of it sounds a little dated but still holds up well
This album is a first for me and while I'm familiar with the singles, it was a refreshing listen. I never realized how much electronic and trip hop was a part of their sound. Kudos to them to reaching past what was expected of a rock band and I think they do it quite tastefully. Thematically the angst rings authentically and there are some concepts explored that you don't hear all the time, so that's nice. Good listen.
Pretty familiar with this album and liked it a lot when it came out. I still like it but I think I’ve both over-listened to a few of the tracks and it has aged a bit. Listens: 1 Fave Track: Stupid Girl Rating: 3
Some cracking songs on here, also others that sound very dated.
Liked some of it, nostalgic but has a surprisingly dated sound.
This album has grown on me, worth it for a couple songs. The rest is alright
Something I vaguely remember hearing when I was young, enjoyed despite my general apathy towards all this random 90s bands were getting
Surprisingly enjoyable to listen to despite the name 🗑️
Solid 3 album. Definitely feel the grunge vibe and a better representation than some that we have had come up in here. I like
not garbage. we have been getting a lot of 90s alternative lately but this one sounded more listenable and distinct than some of the others. Also I went the whole day thinking the lead singer was Courtney Love
Unfortunately, Garbage, for me, equals that one rain song. They do have solid stuff besides that, which is why I’m bumping it up to a 3, it’s just not really for me
Hooks and enjoyable noise.
Гарбаге знаю, много чего гоняю. Но, взглянув на трек-лист дебютника, не увидел ничегот знакомого. Послушал и понял почему: чет все перегружено слишком
on dirait juste de la pop de 2012 genre
This was Not My Idea but can’t Fix Me Now. That was Garbage. ;)
B- Supervixen 3 Queer 3 Only Happy When It Rains 3 As Heaven Is Wide 3 Not My Idea 3 A Stroke Of Luck 3 Vow 4 Stupid Girl 3 Dog New Tricks 3 My Lover's Box 3 Fix Me Now 3 Milk 4 Lesbian music. My favorite.
Hmm
This just isn’t my jam. I was going to give this a 2, but I thought the last two songs saved it.
Solid 90’s alt rock album. A bit calculated in its production but generally enjoyable all around.
3.5 I was very young when Garbage was a cool bad to like, but in my mind they were significantly more grungy than this. This album is quite pop-y when you listen to the whole thing. Not surprising it was so successful. Queer and Vow are new to me and going on the playlist. Like the intro to Milk too
Better than I thought it would be.
It was cool at the beginning but after some of the songs it started to feel like it’s all the same.
Helt deecent
I was already familiar with Only Happy When It Rains. But after listening, Queer and Stupid Girl were familiar as well. The album overall is pretty decent. It is squarely 90s rock in feel and sound, not that that's a bad thing. For me personally, I'd be happy listening to a couple songs and maybe not seek out the full album so much.
Fínasta rokk. Aukastig fyrir trommusamplið í Stupid girl. 3,5.
I recognized more songs than I expected since I've never listened to Garbage on purpose, so I have inadvertently heard their music. Nothing spectacular, though there are a couple of really good songs on here, but it isn't something I would seek out. The nice thing about this list is to make you aware of either music you have never heard before or force you to listen to music you avoided for whatever reason in the past. Garbage is a band I avoided and listening now I admit the album is worth a listen. They were an important band to come out of the 90's, but their sound isn't unique enough to pick them out of a crowd of other mid-90's female-led bands.
Good memories
The grunge and pop bits are very interchangeable with almost any other post-1990 group, but when the band are exploring different ideas the album is excellent. Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. 3.0/5.0: Good
It wasn't garbage though
An alright album Top tracks: Only Happy When It Rains
I guess this is fine. The singles are quite catchy. I don't hate it. It seems much of it's time. You know, sure, whatever.
Nice to revisit this….
Well it's...
fun intro to post-grunge, a little emo for my taste but some gems in here.
Enjoyable
Good, I suppose. I wasn't expecting to get too much out of this - it feels like it's very of its time really. But actually, there was more going on than I'd have given them credit for; in particular there are some really good, almost metal, guitar parts on Not My Idea, and she has a really instantly recognisable singing style. It's not earth-shattering, but it's pretty good.
Never heard of this group before but they're definitely not garbage. I did like a lot of this album but it was long and I started getting tired of it.
The songs all start to sound the same....just a tab bit too much distortion
Not bad. First time listing all way through.
One of the better 90's bands and a good solid album, not something I would actively seek out but a welcome change from the crap that's regularly being served up.
Better than expected but nothing that blew me away.
Solid album. Not much that blew me away. But classic 90s sound.
Solid Rock; a little bit too 'indie' for me >3
Lot of nostalgia. Mid 90s rock vibe gives it another half point. It’s such a familiar sound.
An easy 3* because that was a good album.
Some good songs that stand out (queer, im only happy when it rains) but most of the rest sort of blends together, not that its bad by any means, its just a pretty standard pop-oriented alt rock album.
Didn't expect this to be so pop-oriented. It's alright. There are some sounds I like on here that remind me of post-punk bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees & Echo and the Bunnymen.
More like a 3.5
Not bad, absolutely fine to have playing during work. But there's nothing remarkable about it either.
Very frog coded album, no I will not elaborate
Fantastic album but I do feel like it has 2 songs on it and 90% of the album is either a stupid girl clone or an only happy when it rains clone
Dit album klinkt wel heel erg als de jaren 90. Paar nummers leuk, paar niet. Weinig over te zeggen
Not bad, but nothing really stood out to me
War also ein stetiges hin-und-her. - Stimme super, tolle Ideen dabei aber um mich richtig zu begeistern leider etwas zu schwanken in der Qualität. 3,25/5
Soild 90’s alternate rock, worth its place on the list but not an album I’ll rush back to.
Pleasantly surprised by this album as a whole, 3.5 si podría
Lovely and cool
Ikke tittelen til albumet eller bandet, men ikke gull heller
Itse asiassa oikein kiva.
(Saatanan metronomi!!)
Kivaa sitä ysäri naisvetoista rockia. Parhaat: Happy Only When It Rains, Queer
An interesting album with some catchy songs and fun ideas. Truly a fun bending of genres and influences but in a way that is stuck in a time capsule. A product of the 90's in that sense, and also with a long runtime probably due to the evolution of the CD as the main format for albums.
Decent queer punk. VERY dramatic in a good way
At first I got reallll excited to revisit this album. To a young, impressionable biscuit boi, nobody was cooler than Shirley Manson crooning dirty little things. The accessibile, industrial sounds felt fresh and daring. The things that made this album special in the 90s has lost its lustre for me in 2024. There are some notable standouts (Queer, Stupid Girl, Supervixen) but they're sandwiched between what feels like over-produced filler. Maybe these were songs that had more soul to them before record execs smoothed out the edges.
I wanted to love this more. Some classic bangers but not incredibly memorable aside from the big ones. Would say more like 3.5 than a 3
The album can be appreciate for what it is for that era when it came out. Not my taste in music but I can see the range of sound in the album and can appreciate it.
Such a fun album! "Queer" is maudlin, and "Happy When It Rains" still slaps. I'm not sure what else they were shooting for on this album but it remains a very fun listen.
Solid alt rock album that pulls on trip-hop, grunge, and Britpop to create a unique sound led by Shirley Manson’s silky gravel vocals and Butch Vig’s shiny production. Some standouts include Vow, Only Happy When it Rains, and Not My Idea. Nothing monumental or innovative about this, but it’s a well written and honestly delivered debut worthy of a listen.
Not garbage. Low 3. Everything after the opener is pretty good.
Much like Jagged Little Pill, this record is extremely 90s. Hell, it has Butch Vig of all people on it. That being said, I have no idea why it's an album I should hear before I die. It's not bad per se, but it's not the classic that its inclusion on the list might indicate.
3-
alright
Fun, not my choice but obviously the main hits are great Happy when it rains
Some nice riffs. Good production. 3 stars
I wish this was actually bad so I could make a pun about the title being accurate.
Quite alright. Metric vibes.
It's fine. It was funky and had some interesting songs. Nothing spectacular but not bad. It's worth the listen once.
es paar nice lieder, aber weniger mis (ussert only happy when it rains <3)
I liked it but no song that really stood out
Garbage by Garbage. didn’t have high expectations, thought it was gonna be grunge or super heavy punk. but it was more in the vain of lighter riot grlll and was actually really good. not sure if it was a low 4 or a high 3 - think i’ll go 3 for safety
I would give 3.5 if that were an option
Gran ritmo
It’s just ok
Ok, but I thought I was going to enjoy it more than I did
A bit different, but not something i could listen to over and over
much nostalgia
Tunnistettavat vuosituhannen lopun soundit. En tiiä häiritsikö ne vai, loiko ne tunnelmaa. Biisit osittain tuttuja poprock renkutuksia joissa muutama ihan tarttuva koukku. Annetaan nyt heikko kolmonen. 3/5
Actually not garbage. Decent stuff. Has some bops. Didn't know they'd sung Stupid Girl. Will probably listen again.
Top of line for 1995 and still sounds pretty sharp and tight today, though pretty canned and quite tame, reflecting the the then-mainstreaming of indie. Dark? A bit, more shadowy, one would say, and certainly not "darker than the deepest pits of hell" (come on, editors, what do you take us for?). The hits mostly deliver the goods and the whole thing is generally likable, but feels tired, defanged if it ever really had fangs. One of those records where one questions whether or not it needs a 20th Anniversary edition; in contrast, one's mind is fully made up (in the negative) as to the point of whether it also needed a 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition and (AND!!!) a 20th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition. The derived-from-MBV factor is quite high; see opening of “My Lover’s Box,” first few bars of which promise to be a cover of “soon” and get nowhere near to that level of quality, engagement, etc. One wonders if one of the editors had/has a crush on Shirley M.
Really fun.
Känner ju igen några låtar. Inga som jag gillat särskilt mycket tidigare. Pop-rockiga utan större finess (tex only happy when it rains). Känns mer generiskt i lurarna. Jag går inte igång på det. (Är det ett problem med en kvinnlig röst. Man vill ju inte vara misogyn i onödan). En tvåa känns onödigt lågt. Men en trea känns lite väl generöst. Men hellre fria än fälla.
Has the classic 90s grunge rock sound that is enjoyable but pretty unmemorable. Not bad but not great.
I dig Shirley Manson's pre-emo/post-grunge vocal stylings. Garbage has always been a band that will turn up on the radio and I have no complaints. I forgot about the song "Queer" which is a good one as well. 3.9
Shirley Mason is bad ass, but I will still stick to the couple of 90s classics here (Happy When it Rains and Stupid Girl)
What I think I know about this album going into it: I know this is the band featuring producer Butch Vig on drums and fronted by Shirley Manson. Vig produced Nirvana’s Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish. I only know two songs from this album: Only Happy When It Rains, and Stupid Girl. I was an in-studio intern in the summer of ‘96 on the morning show at WHFS in Washington DC and we played Stupid Girl A LOT. Like, A LOOOOtTtT. (Also, just to date myself more, we used CDs!) While listening: - In Supervixen I hear how huge Pixies’ influence was on the 90s sound. If you’re not familiar with Pixies I’m sure you’ll hear them on this list. - “I’m riding high upon a deep depression” - This line kind of sums up 90s alternative music. - As major key as the 80s were, the 90s were so minor key. - Not My Idea - I think I know this song too! Kind of a cool song, I like the instrumental between the chorus and verse or outro. - OMG I never realized how much of 90s alternative music was about flat-out refusing to be happy. But … jeez. Looking back at it …. - A Stroke of Luck - Hey, this is a COOL 90s sound that I forgot about. Reminds me of Sneaker Pimps’ “6 Underground” which I’ll never stop thinking is cool af. - My God, Stupid Girl really transports me to a point in time when I was young, carefree, and stupid lol. - My Lover’s Box - Beastie Boys sounding intro. - Fix Me Now - Well this is clearly the worst song on this album. - Wait! Milk wants to be considered … Nope, def Fix Me Now wins. - Overall: Can’t believe how this album’s vibe brought me back to the 90s even though I’ve never heard most of these tracks. Not bad though. Honestly, better than I expected.
like this alot
Study times. Still remember them but even back then thought they were so so.
I really want to give this a 4- it's a good album (strong debut!), it has a cohesive sound, I enjoyed listening to it, no problems with lyrics or production really, and some songs really did stand out. But man, there's just something a bit too unconvincing about it? Sorry Shirley :(
I won't say it's garbage, but it's very unremarkable besides having a female singer (maybe it's on the list for more female representation?). I only knew I'm Only Happy When It Rains. I never loved that song, nor did I love any of the other songs. It's a low 3/5 for me.
Some of the tracks were a great surprise and the mix is amazing. Sounds industrial but really polished, everything feels in place and awesome sound design. Great lyrics - lots of questioning faith, humanity and sexiness everywhere. Loved some of the tracks, “Only Happy When It Rains” is a banger. - Queer - Only Happy When It Rains - A Stroke of Luck - Vow
Excellent first part. The last tracks feel all samey. Classic tunes here
I listened to this album a lot as a teenager. My tastes have evolved a bit since then, but this still mostly holds up and is a good nostalgia trip.
Not too bad.
This album felt like it should've been more impactful than it actually was for me. Lots of catchy stuff, full of 90s edge, but at the end of it all I don't think there was a single song that stood out among the rest for me, bad or good. It fell into the same rut that a lot of other 90s albums have fallen into for me with repetitive choruses and dated vibes. Still not a bad listen though.
Dark and melodic with a surprisingly dancey industrial underpining from the bass & drums that I hadn't really picked up on when this was all over the radio. Dense production ala Smashing Pumpkins - the sound is really full across all the channels - very little breathing room. The hits have really catchy hooks and instantly recognizable line delivery, but the rest is a lot less memorable - fades into the morass of decent mid 90s alt rock.
They got milk. - 5/10
I am milk 5/10
There were some ok songs but not my favorite 6.5/10
This Garbage is slick. I have mixed feelings about their overall vibe and approach, but I appreciate that they know what they're doing with their brand of radio-ready "indie/not indie" music.
I thought the songs were not too bad, but also kinda samey. 3/5
This is what the 90s sounded like.
Garbage passed me by in their heyday so I only really knew them from The World Is Not Enough thème, which I like quite a bit. There’s some wonderful songs on her, but it’s pretty samey and the standout tracks don’t elevate it quite enough to cohere as a strong statement.
Pretty good, saved it, but not the album I was going for
bien decente
It's ok
This album is essentially what I thought it would be. It's a nice look back at the past, but ultimately I don't feel like I came away from this album having absorbed much of it. The album certainly benefits from having multiple good producers in the band, and Shirley Manson's voice fits the grinding, distorted guitars well. It's not bad, but it leaves me feeling a bit flat 3/5
She has a nice voice.
meh
Not a bad album, I'd only previously heard "I'm only happy when it rains", "queer", and "stupid girl". They had significant radio play at the time this album was released. I didn't particularly like them at the time, hearing them now, almost 30 years later, they're ok songs. The rest of the album was along the same vein, some synth, industrial, mixed with grunge. It was alright
Pretty cool 90s album I was unfamiliar with. Not the greatest in my opinion, but still cool and unique.
a little too grunge-y for my taste. BUT Shirley Manson has a great voice for rock and the band writes some pretty good songs, and from what I gather, Manson rewrote a lot of the songs herself and it reflects her own experiences more than anything.
Pretty good! Sure sounds like men have treated Shirley Manson like shit
Grungy mid 90s rock, very reminiscent of Nirvana, but with female vocals and not quite as dirty sounding. I appreciate the clean vocals which contrast with the grungy sound of the rhythm guitars. Musically, the composition is simple for the most part. No unexpected chord changes, definitely not "progressive" in that regard. Just another typical mid 90s grungy alternative rock album. It's not an album where all the songs sound the same. I can tell this is probably one of the best representatives of its genre, but this genre isn't necessarily one that moves me.
Enjoyed the album, but apart from the three commercial success tracks onit, the rest was just middle of the road.
Glad I finally listened to Garbage, they were a band that seemed important that I never dug into. After listening, I'm mostly not sure what all the fuss is about. They're fine, but that's about as profound as it got for me.
Not bad not great.
Es un poco errático, pero tiene algunas muy buenas canciones y me da una sensación de nostalgia porque se parece a la música del 2000
combines some of my most hated song mechanics (cool instrumental that stops for the vocals) and one of my favourites (short moments of complete silence) fantastic relaxed female vocals the high pitched echoey electric guitar definitely gets on my nerves and seems to be all over the album. yikes same thing with the high pitched synth favourite song: 'As Heaven Is Wide'
A couple iconic songs from the era...
Hits still sound good but much of this feels like My Bloody Valentine-lite. One can hear the commoditization of indie and alt in the production choices, which aimed for a tight, sharp sound, but also made it all pretty innocuous. Did editors include this pretty undistinguished record for the same reason that one was originally attracted to this record in '95: because SM was hot and formidable? Come to think of it, that's probably why producers picked her to be Garbage front person?
I was expecting a lot of puns in the review section, not disappointed. The album sounds quite dated, it really FEELS like from that era, but it's still fun. Good to listen to while cleaning your house. (I don't like numeric ratings, I just give 3 to anyone)
I like this, but I'm giving it 3 stars because I'd need to listen to it again before I say for sure if it would go into my rotation.
Above average alternative rock album from the mid-90s.
Solid vibe. I dig it.
First two tracks in I was loving this. I was feeling nostalgia for an album in never listened to at a time I would have been too young to appreciate it. However, it then quickly turned into mediocre 90s rock. Few other tracks on here that were enjoyable but a let down from how good it started off
Good, maybe not for me. Lots of talk about God in a negative? Manner. Good guitar work I wasn’t expecting
didn't listen to it that much but its ok.
I went in knowing nothing about this band, but I’m glad I listened to it. The lead singer had a great voice for the lyrics
