It was fun. Made me nostalgic for a part of the '90s I wasn't old enough to actually remember.
Catchy choruses and well tempered effects. I wasn't blown away by anything but an enjoyable listen overall

Garbage’s self-titled album is a solid slice of classic '90s alternative. I didn’t hate it at all — in fact, that gritty, moody sound brought back some serious nostalgia. It just didn’t do quite enough to make me want to come back for another listen. I definitely recognized “Only Happy When It Rains” and “Stupid Girl” from back in the day — they still hold up and were the clear highlights for me. The rest of the album had its moments but kind of blended together after a while. If you're into that era and sound, it’s worth a listen.
Great and iconic 90’s album.
Didn't think it was my thing at the start; Supervixen and Queer did nothing for me, but I liked it the more I listened. I liked the tune and harmonies in the 'pour my misery down' middle bit of Only Happy When It Rains. Cool intro to As Heaven Is Wide also. Sweet tune to the verses of Not My Idea. Vague Twin Peaks sound to riff in A Stroke of Luck. Pretty good. Vow, Stupid Girl, and Dog New Tricks are fun. My Lover's Box is pretty dull. Sweet tune to the chorus of Fix Me Now. Milk is pretty dull too - yet AGAIN a disappointment album-ender!

fun in parts, but definitely repetitive over all. I really respect the band's ability to try new things and stretch out into other genres, but you can see where every song is going ahead of time.
grungey, not unwelcome, SO 90s
This just didn’t do much for me, and I’ve always recoiled from the hit single “Stupid Girl.” (I do like the other single, “I’m Only Happy When It Rains.”) Nineties rock appears to bore me these days. I want to like it, especially with a vicious-sounding female lead and NIN producers. But I give it a big meh.
I don't really like this dark, negative vibe but for some days it can be relatable. The only song I like is I'm only happy when it rains but that's probably cuz I heard it before. The rest is okay.
Good songs and beat but not really my style
Want to like it, but it feels insanely dated to my ears.
It rocks, instant 90s rocks and instantly returned to my childhood. For some reason I feel like I'm seeing a Serial Experiments Lain episode with this album maybe because the band reminds me of Bôa. The only problem I have with this album is how the singer sings all the songs almost the same. But I really like the guitars and how it transitions from one song to another.

I know this album well having owned it for a long time. It's a great piece of indie pop/rock sitting in between The Cranberries and Skunk Anansie in terms of pop and rock.
Sounds like what it is, produce of producer Butch Vig. It’s that slick mid nineties rock sound. It was ok at the time and is ok now, not particularly memorable or anything special. Sold a shed load but then so did many similar sounding albums. Passed an hour while checking work emails this Monday morning, 3 Star.
I'm surprised how much it grew on me as the album went on. Didn't grow on me as much as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars however.

Some undeniably good songs. I personally don’t think Shirley sings with a ton of personality. The instrumentals are not impressive. I don’t think the pushing of grunge to a poppier song really took off in any meaningful way either. Jagged Little Pill is what this album wants to be.

I really dig the sound. There are hypnotic electronic loops and hooks with a chunky glaze of alt rock guitar work. Singer fits into it all flawlessly. Some neat samples of older songs by other artists given new life and color here. Being born the year this released, I don’t recall what popular music sounded like but I’m sure this was a new and whole different approach and I appreciate that.
This album feels 10 years before its time, as though it fits right in with the edgy alt-rock of the early 2000s. Most of the tracks on this album would be at home in a sleek urban sci-fi/fantasy film along the lines of The Matrix or Underworld.
Pretty solid. Took a few listens. The songs I was most familiar with are among the best.

All the components feels like something I would really love but somehow it isn't geling together for me. Some tracks are great, some not so much. I bet with the right atmosphere though I would love the whole thing. Only Happens When It Rains and Stupid Girlfeels like they belong in the soundtrack of a 90s film that would have regular cult showings at the Prince Charles Cinema, and I would eat it up

Some great tunes. Epitomises that 90s sound!
Two things combine in Garbage to make something unique - Shirley Manson’s semi-improvised lyrics and compelling personality-led performance, and Butch Vig and Steve Marker’s background in production and creative remixes for other artists. It’s a match made somewhere pretty close to heaven, if not quite in it. The eclecticism for which Garbage are justly famous might have made for a disjointed album but sonically it hangs together very coherently. My reservation is that it feels like they’re playing at the dark side; their natural home is cheery, cheesy pop and the apparent edginess is performance rather than conviction. I think this is the result of having a pair of producers on board who have a very strong view of what makes a record sell, which also explains the moments of rather clever-clever production gimmickry which litter this record. That said, you have to say it’s a very competent pop record.

Not Garbage but not my style. Does tend to be one liners that get repeated in a song that should be 2 minutes but get stretched out to like five minutes. 5/10
6.5/10 The first pleasant surprise of my 1001 albums project. Some pre-adolescent memories of this band that may have been based on little more than an aversion to the pink album cover made me think I hated Garbage. It's still not music I can imagine revisiting particularly often but as my taste has veered a little more towards harder rock of late I quite enjoyed this. Stupid Girl isprobably the best song on the album, but Milk was a real surprise given its trip hop vibe which I did not expect to find on a Garbage album. Listens: 2

Damned good album. Stupid Girl is clearly the stand-out track, but it's all good. A good 3.5 star album.
Difficult album to review. There's a lot of genuinely great ideas here, but every single track feels a minute too long. The vocals are great, but it's hard to shake the feeling that a lot of the angst and cynicism is slightly fake.
This is an album that belongs on this list. Appropriate and great musicianship. Great and well structured songs. Sounds well produced. Not too long. Not a lot of filler. Shirley Manson in particular is excellent. I don’t like it. I couldn’t tell you why. All those points I made earlier are true. But I listened once, like I did in 1995 and thought. Nup. Putting on again today I thought maybe I’ll get it 30 years down the track. Nope. I don’t. I don’t blame others for liking and even loving this. I can even see why. 5 for its quality. -2 for the mark I’d give it. Let’s call it a three
After a variety of genres finally a rocks album which I never heard of before. I was excited about this one and it didn’t disappoint. It’s not too special or groundbreaking, but a good and steady album. Favourite songs: - Supervixen - Dog new tricks
I thought I was going to love this based on the first few tracks, but it kinda dipped into a pseudo goth 80s pop vibe and it kinda lost me. I really enjoyed the dynamic range in the first two tracks- the do-di-das mirroring the guitar riff was cool, the huge hooks to stripped back verses and vice versa were abrupt but I loved the shift. From there it got more poppy, but still felt like there was a grunge-y tinge to it, but they lost me when it started feeling really poppy and electronic. There's a couple pretty decent songs on here though.

#1 crush was the first song I heard on the Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack. I listened to that song endlessly, and it still holds up. I always appreciated Garbage, but I recognize now that my appreciation requires context. In the 1990’s there was a flood of women responding to the Grunge movement with a spanning the feminist spectrum: Tori Amos, Morrisette, Sarah McLachlin; Melissa Ethridge; Sheryl Crow; Shania Twain; Avril Lavigne, et al. Then Shirley Manson came on the scene with something different. It wasn’t Singer-Songwriter; it wasn’t Grunge; it wasn’t rock or pop. The entire band-Butch Vig, Duke Erickson, Steve Marker and Eric Avery-offered a blend of genres that defined our generation in their own way. Songs like I’m Only Happy When it Rains, and Stupid Girl took to the radio, while songs like Queer and Alien Sex Fiend were common at house parties. There is a reason most of these guys went on to produce or play on such amazing albums. I think this is a great album but I would have to see if that is a product of my age or universal across generations. I feel like being objective requires me to score lower than I normally would due to that feeling.
This ate my review, but the short version is I remember this hitting harder as a kid. Perfectly fine album, but better examples of the style are available.

Well made 90's rock, good guitar work and vocals. I just don't enjoy this genre of rock that much, even some of its more solid examples are unlikely to rise above a 3/5.
Garbage is a weird mix of being outdated at the time of release and still sounding new today. The singles are the strongest songs on the record and apart from those I really wasn’t that drawn towards the record. It’s alright, but I thought I would’ve liked it even more.

I don’t know if I’ll remember many songs from this record, but I will remember how great it sounded and how well it was produced for 1995 (remaster aside). “Only Happy When It Rains” is probably my highlight for its anthemic chorus. “As Heaven Is Wide” has a nice mellow breakbeat and chunky guitar loop/bassline. “Stupid Girl” has a really sticky little piano refrain on loop that stuck with me through the album. “Milk” is a personal pick for me for its downtempo breaks, synth strings, and general dramatic rock-meets-electronica mood. Is this rock? Is this electronica? Who’s to say, but it’s worth a listen. Actually solid / 5.

only knew one track from this but i was pleasantly surprised by the variety, the dance influence is a lot more prevalent than i would have thought going in! cool album thank you for not being butt rock
Classic 90’s, good not great. This was one of those bands that had some highlights but the normal airplay was always enough for me. Never really had the need to dig deeper.
The two radio hits are definitely the standouts here. It was a fun trip down memory lane, but listening front to back I was surprised at just how much all songs sounded alike. Not much else to say.
This was on heavy rotation during my formidable high school years so very nostalgic. I liked their big hits but never really loved Garbage. Overall a decent listen with the generic 3 rating.

Meh. Pretty straightforward garage band rock. Very middle of the road.
Probably one where nostalgia gets the better of me. Generic mid90s rock, but was bought by pretty much everyone as it felt very different. Shirley Manson's powerful vocals and glossy mane definitely stood out in the sea of bang average Britpop era. Want to give it 4 stars for the happy memories, it's getting a 3 because there's a lot of filler outside the big singles.

Solid enough and couple of good tracks but overall nothing that exciting or interesting to me. I feel a bit of a lack of energy (may just be me) but doesn’t really work for me in this type of music.

Decent 90s alt rock albeit dated. Bit overproduced but a good listen.
Groupe connu de nom uniquement. Harmoniquement intéressant, pour une fois ce ne sont pas systématiquement les mêmes 3 ou 4 accords sur toutes les chansons. Les morceaux sont variés, ce qui donne envie d'entendre les suivants. Bonne découverte donc, qui méritera d'autres écoutes. Par contre je ne suis pas sur de l'intégrer à ma collection, il manque un peu de dynamisme. =>3/5
I'd heard of Garbage before but didn't know a song. Decent music but not really my thing and not sure if I'd come back to it, but definitely good enough to be on this list.

I liked it. Not mingblowing but certainly was nice to listen to.
I like the female lead singer a lot. It’s definitely grungey and not the most uplifting music ever which would make it hard to listen to on a consistent basis.
I should like everything about this, but it doesn’t really connect for some reason. It reminded me of The Smashing Pumpkins and Hole, but I would prefer to listen to those bands instead. It’s well made and I would never complain to hear songs from it, but it wouldn’t be my first choice. Favorite songs were Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, Not My Idea, and Stupid Girl.

Such a huge album at the time, everyone had it and it was all over the radio. A cool chick fronting a loud grunge band with a hooky but not a sellout sound, perfect mix in 1995. Influential, a little groundbreaking and still getting airplay today. Hits "Supervixen", "Only Happy When It Rains", "Stupid Girl", "Vow" & "Queer" owned the radio that year. It's been years since I listened to this album, it was nice to re-hear "Not My Idea" which is a unique tune. The production on this album is so good, not surprising with Butch Vig on the boards. Too much of it sounds similar but it was their signature sound. Staying power, hits, influence on the sound at the time & the mark that Shirley Manson left on the industry all point to this being a T1001 album.

The singles off this are pretty great; I especially like Stupid Girl. The rest isn't quite as strong and doesn't hold my attention as much. An upper three.

It sounds interesting but I can’t get super into it.
With 90s music it's very hit or miss for me. This album is kind of in the middle. Maybe I missed the boat on this kind of moody rock music but it's a little slow for me. I tend to go more on the indie and alt rock side and this wasn't my favorite but I think the talent is definitely there on this project. The composition was interesting and the vocals were great. Decent project to me.

Garbage - Garbage Actually not garbage. This is quite a neat punk-esque rock album to listen. It gets a little bit inconsistent in the middle of the album, but at the end it goes back on track. The songs on it sound really bloomy and nostalgic, in a good way to be honest. Mm, I'unno about this one. I was excited to get into this 'coz I really liked "I Think I'm Paranoid", the big single from their next album, but listening to their debut here... It's just not doing it for me, honestly? A bit more of it than I like just kinda flew by me. I've been tryna pin down what it is. Well, I've seen this album labelled as dance-rock... Maybe this is the wrong kind of dance music for me? 'Coz I've loved my fair share across its many different flavors. But here, it can be a little too... "Trip hop" for my tastes? A little chill and trance-like; not the kind of thing that regularly grabs my attention. Really, it doesn't surprise me that my favorite tracks ("Only Happy When It Rains", "Stupid Girl" — of course I gravitate towards the singles) sounded way more rockin' to my ears — an', heck, from what I read, "I Think I'm Paranoid" isn't even dance-rock, so what does **that** tell yah, eh? Frankly, it's those two songs that're pulling this thing up to a 3. It's just not my thing. Like, I was really comin' in here thinkin' I was gonna be the trash man, eatin' up Garbage — and for a couple songs, sure. But on the whole, I'm good.

It has a splattering of good songs interspersed with pretty average songs. It is neither great nor terrible. I would listen to it again but never really seek the album out. Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 but not worthy of 4 stars

Listening to the album has kind of cemented Garbage as the sort of band that occupies the middle ground of 90s britpop*. Also-there's. Nothing is terrible. There are a couple of big hits. But they're music is never going to be something at the forefront of my mind. *I know they're American with Shirley ... but that's never how they were marketed.
Not a one word review using the band name. If more songs hit me like #1 Crush, I'd put this at a 4. But they did not not. And I'm not clear if that was on the original release. Either way, some good stuff, but not 3nough for me to seek out more.
Plastical, artificial, sexy, materialistic, often awfully cheesy but more often catchy as hell. Predicted Marilyn Manson‘s sound of „Chemical Animals“. An essential 90‘s thingy - still often to be found on fleamarkets.
I do like the singer she has a great bad ass presence. The music borders on sounding like commercial heavy rock a bit too much. I bet they may be good live.

It’s okay, not really my thing. Some stand outs but nothing did a whole lot for me instrumentally or vocally.
Overall: 6/10 Pretty decent alt rock from the 90s, nothing stood out as amazing to me but it does a good job of blending rock with some electronic elements and the songs are consistently fun to listen to. Fav Song:Queer Least Fav Song: Supervixen
Fairly bland, found myself falling asleep. I don't doubt that people who like this kind of music will think this a cracking album, but it was all a bit moist for me.
Nothing remarkable but a fun listen nonetheless. 3/5.
nice pop rock
Pure 90s rock/grunge/pop combination. Parts of it are reminiscent of Prodigy, with its upbeat dance rhythms with electronic instrumentation. The overall vibe is pretty good and reminds me of my yesteryears, but this wasn't a group I was particularly drawn to while younger and I can't say that feeling is any different now. This record, and band, has its place in music history but it's nothing too memorable from my perspective.

Fun album, but a bit repetitive by the end.
Album is not holding up particularly well over time. I think it is the lyrics that truly need more work.

I hear a lot of influences on this album. Especially from the 80s, like Talk Talk, the Cure and Killing Joke, but the result sounds very 90s. The album starts of with a couple of big hits. The middle is... I wouldn't say garbage, but not as good. Towards the end it gets better again. Favorite song: Queer.
Definetely not my kind of jam. There are a few tracks that i may save in my Spotify account, but didn'd really enjoy the album. I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics though, so i didnt get into the album rythm and ethos if such rythm and ethos exist. Great to have playing during work, but i didn't find anything remarkable about it. Songs that i liked: Track 9 - Dog New Tricks Track 10 - My Lover's Box Songs that i didn'd like: Track 1 - Supervixen Track 2 - Queer
Garbage is good for the most part but I only really like it in places. Songs where she mumbles in an attempt to be seductive or whatever and then gets into full voice at the chorus don't really appeal to me, but when they get into a groove from the start and let go a bit, Vow, Only Happy When it Rains, Stupid Girl, they're a lot better. A solid 3, just some of the stylistic choices aren't my favourite.
Not garbage, quite good actually. Milk sounded vaguely familiar, but I hadn't heard the rest before. It's pretty solid female-fronted electro rock, more PJ Harvey than No Doubt in the most part. It's pretty catchy, lyrics are in the most part worth listening to, high 3. Probably would've been a 4 if I had any nostalgia for it.

Queer Only Happy When It Rains Vow Stupid Girl
Alternative bands from the 90s with one word names tend to blend into one for me and I initially struggled to remember anything from this one apart from Stupid Girl. However, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the more down tempo tracks on this that edged into shoegaze/trip hop territory, with the highlight for me being A Stroke of Luck with Shirley Manson’s voice flowing like warm honey. Lovely stuff.
It’s another one of ‘those’ albums (I’ll have to think of a name for them) that are nice to play in the background, and are representative of their genre, but do not go much further past it. I’m positive if I paid more attention rather than just putting it on whilst I did work then it’d be more interesting. But how much more interesting? It really does seem like average, inoffensive alt-rock, perhaps a product of its time, perhaps timeless. I’m not sure of the specifics. What I do know is that it’s at least ‘alright’.

The through line of a band or musician breaking into the mainstream, often building on risk-takers who came before, that then result in a dozen market-driven copy-cats is as reliable as the sun coming up every day. Pixies --> Nirvana --> Silverchair X-Ray Specs --> Sleater Kinney -->Avril Lavigne While I'm sure Shirley Manson has loads more autonomy than the average boy-band member, there's still something so slick and market-ready about Garbage. Sure, the music is catchy (if dated) with vaguely subversive lyrics - but I just don't *buy* any of it. Like, when PJ Harvey sings 'you leave me dry,' or Courtney Love screams 'when they get what they want, and they never want it again,' I *believe* it. With Garbage's music, not so much.
A nice sound, an album of it too much but sprinkled on a playlist all songs welcome.

Pretty solid ‘90s alt rock with noisier elements thrown in sometimes. It doesn’t blow me away and it goes a bit from one ear to another but nothing bad. The stops in the first song were a bit distracting. 3 stars.

Released in 1995 when the alternative rock boom was winding down and it wasn't clear what the next big trend in rock was going to be. As result, it incorporates some sounds that were big at the time, but ultimately feels very dated. "Vow" is great, and the other big singles are decent, but as a whole the album is just okay. 3.5 stars.
Pretty dated production with lots of slightly limp techno dance beats and gimmicky effects particularly on the first track with the harsh, sucking gated gaps of silence. There a few pretty good songs and I do like Shirley’s suave, slightly snarly Madonna vocals but really it is just Stupid Girl that is the standout for me. 6.0

SOOOOO 90's. After Kurt Cobain died it was like every band started using those trip hop drumbeats and synths. Crazy, mang. I actually kind of like the whole "dark neo noir"-ish aesthetic they have going on here, and some of the arrangements are quite nice, but besides that it's pretty standard angsty alt rock affair with some electronic influence. I guess the occasional tonal turns that mix major and minor modes (like "Not My Idea") are pretty cool too? But too same-y and not captivating enough to be great.

Thoughts before listening: Garbage is one of those bands where I like their hits, but in general its not for me. I think with multiple producers in the band their sound just comes off as too polished and overproduced. I'm sure I'll add the hits to my playlist though. Review: Yep, just how I remember this band. The hits are definitely catchy, but its just too "perfect". There is no grit to their music which sounds exactly like what it is: a bunch of people who make a living producing alt-rock hits getting together to write their own album. With this coming a day after getting Public Image Ltd, I can say that for the most part, I prefer this sound to PiL which was trying very hard to be anti-pop music. Although I will say that I prefer PiL's 2 best songs to anything I heard here...maybe its the shock value of finally hearing something enjoyable on that album as opposed to Garbage where everything basically sounds the same. Anyway, this is a 3-star album.

For an album called garbage by a group called garbage, it isn't garbage.
Honestly a really well made and produced album. I really enjoyed it. Reminds me of being in 5th grade and hanging out with Billy and Carls older sisters

Some good songs. Wasn't a massive fan back then and I haven't been converted I'm afaraid.
There are tracks on this album that sound too much like an American version of triphop, which I don't like. At other times, it's *painfully* 90s. But it gets a small ratings bump for still somehow not sounding like much else at the time. That said, it felt like a racing game soundtrack.

Hot girl vibes
Quintessentially 90s sounding indie rock. The hits are the strongest tracks for me, and whilst a nice nostalgia trip, I probably won't be listening on repeat
Good album. It feels very 90s post-grunge with some really cool arrangements and good pop sensibility from the vocals, etc. It's got some techno-ish stuff, which feels very of that time. There's many really solid songs, but, as a whole, it doesn't feel or sound exceptional to me. ***

Overall this album is full of cool rock music, however I found the end of many songs to just repeat the same line a bunch. Liked Songs: Supervixen, Queer, Stupid Girl, Only Happy When It Rains I'll consider this a high 3/5.
My mum used to listen to this so there's a bit of nostalgia. It sounds very dated now, and you can definitely hear the smashing pumpkins influence.
Good in parts
This album had a nice blend of different sounds and styles. It combines the quirkiness of alt rock with the catchiness of pop (and other genres) which gave it a decent amount of bangers.
Very 90s, takes me back! Enjoyed it.
The mix sounds like a first album. I was always more of a 2.0 guy but there are some solid tracks here that hold up.

I should love this as a child of the 90s, and yet I still can't get behind this kind of a rock sound. A couple of tracks were interesting, but I found most of it unoriginal and a bit too similar to other stuff I've heard from that decade. The closer was really nice, though. 3 stars
When I was 15, I wrote an erotic (porno) story that involved myself and Shirley Manson. My sister who was younger found it screwed up in my wastepaper bin and tried to blackmail me with it. Anyway, great album but meant more as a moody teenager with a high libido.
this is not garbage in the slightest, some great alt rock with dance and electronic influence. lots of forward thinking lyrics that are hidden within the deeper cuts of this album, worth a listen simply to listen.

Was surprised at how familiar it was. Must have owned it at some point, but also played it a fair bit. Overproduced, but pretty good all told. Poppy, cool and arch. I liked it, might listen to some tracks again soon.
Brought back a lot of memories. Saw Garbage last year and the band was just as tight. Shirley Manson is a real star.
More about the zeitgeist than the music. Good enough though.

Een verrassend leuk album! Niet iets wat ik echt eerder had gehoord, doet me een beetje denken aan Paramore als in dat het rock-achtig is met sterke vrouwelijke vocals er in. Ik vind dit echt veel vermakelijker dan ik dacht, het is een beetje een rock-pop album. Vermakelijk, niet wereldschokkend. Ik zou het 3,5 ster geven. Dat kan niet, dan krijgen ze er 3, simpelweg omdat je met 4 sterren op mn profiel staat en ik natuurlijk niet kan hebben dat mensen denken dat ik alleen maar van garbage houd. This was some perfectly fine alt-rock. Didn't love it, but it was solid. 3.3
A few bangers but the other songs sound too noisy for me. Nostalgic.

solid stuff, unfamiliar with the hits/singles but I liked most of em. they've got a cool ass sound and the sheer 90sness of it all adds to the charm a lot but in some places is a bit obnoxious imo. overlong as well imo. great voice tho with some good tracks. Probably won’t rly return to this though. 6/10

Huh. Wasn’t expecting this to be on the list. It’s a solid album, but i don’t recall it being the “innovative” Album so many did, especially given what the early 90’s produced. This seemed almost tame and ultra-accessible after loads of breakthrough, genre defying and defining albums and bands. Garbage was a safe band one could tap their foot to while proclaiming your “alt” cred.
I found the album to be nothing special relative to the music coming out at the same time.

Wow this is garbage. The band, I mean! This was an enjoyable album, classic 90's fare. Also Only Happy When It Rains was used in the period film, Captain Marvel so that was cool. This felt like the album Liz Phair was trying to make yesterday, a really good brooding alternative album. That underground garbage.

It started off a bit slow and I thought this would be an album I would be a bit ambivalent towards, but it really picks up after a couple of songs and by the end is quite an engaging listen.

I wanted to dislike this because a bad review for Garbage by Garbage writes itself. Unfortunately, I didn’t mind it. A little repetitive; not a lot of variety of tone or feel, but they do miserable and dreary very well.

Some of it sounds a little dated but still holds up well
This album is a first for me and while I'm familiar with the singles, it was a refreshing listen. I never realized how much electronic and trip hop was a part of their sound. Kudos to them to reaching past what was expected of a rock band and I think they do it quite tastefully. Thematically the angst rings authentically and there are some concepts explored that you don't hear all the time, so that's nice. Good listen.
