Reviews (page 11 of 12)

It's okay.

One of the least likely Big Rockbands ever. In the nineties I used to listen to quite a few garage rock bands - lots of bands on the Crypt label; New Bomb Turks etc - and see them live when possible. They always played small, sweaty venues and were usually great fun. My first impression of the White Stripes was that they were the latest incarnation of this strand of bands. Some of their riffs were bigger and better than those of the bands before but the difference was marginal and it puzzled me why they broke through in the way they did. Get Behind Me Satan doesn't really help explain it either. It's one of the ones after Seven Nation Army and they try very hard to broaden their sound - pianos, marimbas - but also still have room for simplistic, fun songs like My Doorbell.

Kan huske den her plade fra da jeg var en knejt! Synes ikke den er ældet vildt godt, det er lidt noget rod, men der er nogen bangers på

On paper I should like the White Stripes way more than I actually do. The odd song here and there I vibe with, but overall it's just not for me.

So I stopped doing this for a little while and came back to this one. Did I really enjoy it? Not really. I think the country stuff is okay, and he's a great musician, but I don't think it has much soul. Maybe he sold it to Satan?

Unique album. Most of the songs were not my cup of tea. great/good songs were blue orchid, my doorbell, little ghost and the denial twist. The rest were mid to bad for me.

I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet).

Honestly very grating and mid. I'm not necessarily a Jack White hater, but this was kinda a slog for me. Too many annoying basic songs. Not the White Stripes best 🤷

Not my groove

Blue Orchid is a fun song, but 90% of this album is some kind of forgettable background dross that only stays at the front of your brain bc Jack White’s screechy voice keeps stabbing your eardrums.

There were parts of songs I liked but nothing I liked in its entirety. The music itself was well written and produced it just isn’t my vibe

White stripes fell of with their last couple records. It's not a hard listen by any means. Just boring af. Would never have relistened if not for this site

Not my favourite, I tend to enjoy Jack White's solo work and Raconteurs more than The White Stripes in general and this was the weakest collection I've heard so far

I think the White Stripes had peaked before this - pretty ordinary.

There are only a handful of White Stripes songs I really enjoy, and none of em belong to this album. It isn't bad, but if I'm in the mood for White Stripes, I'm listening to the hits and moving on.

Giving headache.

A few bangers. Mostly random harmonies / production.

I didn't really like this. At this stage he became a bit annoying to me, sounds like he's trying to be too smart, believing the hype. Nothing here comes close to Hotel Yorba!

This album comes out with its strongest song, White Orchid, and then just fades slowly. White Stripes have a cool cool sound but it doesn’t necessarily translate over a full album. Most of their best songs aren’t on here, either (see Icky Thump, Fell In Love With A Girl, Seven Nation Army)

Another album I thought I would enjoy more than I did. Quite a disjointed album, wasn’t particularly rocky and never felt like it got going. I like a few White Stripes singles so was expecting a little more.

Liked a handful of songs - Denial Twist and Take, Take, Take. Found it repetitive and somewhat boring.

Boring with a couple of good songs

**An ok album, not my cup of tea, but endurable

I love the white stripes and Jack White but this album just screams mid 2000 commercial music. Still, not the worse but probably my least favorite White Stripes album. Fav songs: Blue Orchid (slaps), my doorbell and denial twist

This album is all over the place, and not in a good way. Most of the songs feel half-baked or just weird for the sake of being weird. There’s barely any of the raw energy that made The White Stripes interesting in the first place. Jack White tries to experiment, but most of it falls flat. The songwriting is forgettable and the whole thing drags on without any real payoff. I kept hoping for a standout track, but nothing stuck. For me, this was a sloppy, directionless mess that’s easy to forget.

Overrated

Not a huge fan. It's a hit or miss train with these songs and they often miss more than they hit. Lots of out there instrumentals, sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Funnily enough I think when they stick to the more traditional songs are the songs I like, although the Marimba stuff is fun.

Not sure what inspired this album from these two, but I found this one pretty boring. It falls off dramatically after Blue Orchid. A rare miss, I guess

I am not a massive fan and this is OK but just grates a bit.

Not my vibe

I don't get this one either. It's just obnoxious.

I don't know. Empezó bien pero luego ya no mucho :((

Too noisy

I feel like this is a really disappointing follow up to Elephant. It definitely had its moments, but I this felt a little too forced to be quirky and out there for no reason. Has a very "look we can be weird" vibe that doesn't really land for me. Top tracks: Blue Orchid, I'm Lonely

It started off good with Blue Orchid but after that it just turns into a snooze fest. I wasn't a fan of Jack White's vocals it felt crude with no substance. Only positive thing I can say was that the real star of the show was the production. Other than that I wished that I had liked this album enough to give it a 3. Best - Blue Orchid Worse - The Nurse, My Doorbell, Passive Manipulation, I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) 2.50/5

Eh. I respect the talent, but nothing on this one resonates.

can't get into this. references too obscure, experimental in sound whilst formulaic in structure.

Not quite sure why this one was on here. Quite forgettable album

Уснул пока слушал, поэтому нихуя не понял. Да, я безответственный хуй

Eh not as good as I thought it was gonna be

I love it when Satan does me from behind. I really do not love it when I'm asked to listen to this pap. Testament to mediocrity.

Nothing to add to my two previous 2-star White Stripes reviews: Seven Nation Army is an amazing track, but seems to have been a one-off success. In general, rock music greatly benefits from bass guitars. The music lacks oomph and is ultimately pretty boring. These sound like unfinished demo tracks at best.

Dude om jag lärt mig något av listorna är det att jag ogillar Jack White... allt känns som poänglös pastiche utan att han investerar sig känslomässigt, allt är på en finurlig och ironisk distans....

OK, not the best white stripes album

Blue Orchid My Doorbell The Denial Twist

Boring emo rock bs not for me Sorry!

brzmi tak jak wygląda okładka, nie mój styl

Elephant is a better album

Starts good but then just okay

Really did not do it for me. I loved elephant but didn’t like this album at all. Good production and Jack Black is a great player but felt quite soulless

4/26/24

2.5. Some songs were listenable but overall it felt like they were trying to parody the Stones (and it didn’t work).

My trouble with the White Stripes is I really like what they did musically a lot the time but Jack White's vocal affectations just get on my nerves.

The drums are the best bit. Nah, only kidding. And yet... that might be the best way of summing up my review. We spoke in the group chat last week about how we don't listen to The White Stripes that much which seemed like an odd omission. Well, I think I've figured out why (at least for me.) There's something about Jack White that's a bit like fingernails down a chalkboard. His guitar tone is very screechy. His voice is a bit whiny. But his music is really good. So it's a bit of a quandary. But it's that quality that makes me listen to other things instead. It's a sort of annoying smug hipsterism. Well, I say the music is really good, but having listened to a whole album, I'm wondering if it's just the "hits" that are good. Apart from "Blue Orchid" and "My Doorbell," I like the marimba on "The Nurse" and I quite like "Take, Take, Take" and the guitar on "As Ugly as I Seem" (maybe because it's acoustic and can't be made to screech.) Two classic songs though so 2/5 - a star for each song.

It’s alright? It lacks the bite of their other work, and frankly, it all feels like B-sides. Nothing stands out as a single or feels particularly catchy, the album just isn’t very memorable. The switch to piano over guitar makes it feel like sort of a strange broadway musical tangent.

This was really boring for me. Uninteresting, bot catchy, and samey end to end. Might be the most songs I've had to skip in any of these albums so far. For once I think the most well known song on the album is actually the best.

Not big on the simple instrumentation.

More depressing rock, this time with lunatic cymbals crashing all over every track like hooligans cascading down a football terrace.

It's varied, it's unique, but I don't think it's very good. I like Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist, and Instinct Blues, but there were just some really weird decisions here. Nowhere near as good as some of their other stuff.

Love Jack White, incredible guitar player, and fun live concert. Don't love this album.

This is my second listen to this album, although I'll admit it's been a while. I've gone through most of "The White Stripes" catalog once before and I'll admit, I was never a fan of them. There are certainly some standout songs like "Fell in Love with a Girl" and "Hotel Yorba" being my favorites, but in general, I was never a fan of the more skeletal alt style that the band pursued. I mean there are certainly some alright songs on this album, I love the dirty distortion of "Instinct Blues", it sounds like an incredible spin on new-era blues and alternative rock. The guitar playing is great in this song. I do like the more eerie nature of the song "The Nurse" as well. I do think Jack and Meg White are talented and creative musicians, and if there's something I can compliment this album on endlessly, it's the interesting songwriting. Vocally though, aside from a few songs, I was never a fan of Jack's higher-pitched, shacky, and slurred style of singing. At its very worst, it flat-out annoys me. There are little glimpses of interesting moments in these songs, but as a whole, there's no song here that sticks with me as great. An example is the little transitional keyboard and guitar interlude on "Take, Take, Take", I like it but the rest of the song bores me. Most of the acoustic cuts here, like the following "As Ugly, As I Seem" I find very one note and dry. The more distorted alt cuts are what hold this thing together. I already mentioned "Instinct Blues" but the opener "Blue Orchid" is quite a decent cut. I think "Blue Orchid" is one of the examples where this bands skeletal and simple style works at least somewhat in their favor. "My Doorbell" is fun but grows tiresome after the halfway mark for me. I think my biggest issue with this thing is it all feels so one-note and hollow, not in a way that benefits the album, but more in a way that yields bland results. It's like the band took a set of rudimentary, yet diverse sounds and sort of molded them together. I can see why some may enjoy it but to me, it all comes off as very inconsistent, messy, and empty. The guitar playing and writing are good enough, but when it comes to enjoying the songs here, I don't find much.

This was one of the most disappointing albums. I don't listen to the white stripes so when I saw the cover I got excited. The title and the aesthetic had me ready for something weird and eclectic (like maybe a strange style like Tom Waits or the bonkers themes of Voltaire). What I got was kinda ok alt versions of music I prefer in its original form. Outside a couple of stand out tracks this was a painfully below average miss.

I have rated this as if I don't know, and don't like, the two famous songs that they have. Without knowing that they are popular, you would think that the Little Ghost song sounds relatively smart but that's it, not a very exciting album, but it's nice and peaceful.

I never understood the appeal of Jack White. I thought the songs were cringe worthy. He's a lousy singer. Even skimming the songs I got bored.

Elephant is a much, much better album, I’m hoping that’s on the list somewhere.

Add it to the list of mid rock albums. The acoustic stripped down moments shine amongst a cloud of mediocre rock songs. 3/10

White stripes: Don’t like their voices. Can be cool to be minimal and quirky but it all seems kinda thrown together or like it’s not quite done and none of the songs really do anything for me. I don’t really get it. Favorite song: Nurse Instinct blues I could do without the low harmony on “Little Ghost

Not entirely sure I needed to hear this album before I died haha

I don't know why this, of all White Stripes albums, is on this list.

Tough one, because I remember this the first time and the singles being all over MTV. I think "My Doorbell" is slightly less annoying now that it's not over saturated. The album overall was mostly ignorable.

some interesting musical ideas but mostly it was so stupid and the lyrics were stupid and singing was not my style and i wanted to skip the last minute of every song

Highlights: Blue Orchid, The Denial Twist. In a nutshell: a hard act to follow The inclusion of a xylophone (The Nurse) and a toy piano (Red Rain) was jarring for me. The ukelele thrash was nice (Little Ghost). What I struggled with most is the lack of variation with guitar, piano and percussion. Does My Doorbell and The Denial Twist sound similar? I swear I heard similar drum beat and piano chords here and throughout the album. Overall: 4/10

Is White Stripes a one hit band? I just didn’t like this album that much. Their voices were nasal and annoying sometimes, especially in the ghost song. My Doorbell was funny though, I enjoyed that. A lot of the songs sounded similar. Also, I think I’m gonna start being more honest with my reviews. All these mid rock albums I’ve been giving 6.5’s and 7’s to? They’re more like 4’s. How hard is it to make a good album? 4/10 Side note, I thought I was caught up 2 days ago, but that was cap, I’m actually caught up today.

It’s a perfectly fine White Stripes album but serves as background music for my tastes.

Good album, though I'm biased because I'm a massive fan of Jack White when he shreds with his guitar. Not a big fan of his more folkish sound, which is the main sound of this album. Also, I love Meg's massive drumming, but this one does not give her that much room to shine.

Meh. The White Stripes had some good singles, but this album didn't do much of anything for me.

A complete structureless mess that has no idea what it's doing, what it wants to be doing, and if it's doing what it wants to be doing. Feels like a bunch of throwaway songs randomly strung together for 44 minutes. I dislike "Elephant" so there was no way I would enjoy this. Two outta five.

Some good tunes, and some that don't hit the mark for me

It sounds like a wannabee Modest Mouse trying to be Modest Mouse but edgy

Not a fan of the album however I loved the “Little Ghost” track

I feel like this album was chosen by throwing a dart at the white stripes discography. This is not their best album. Normally, white stripes albums are characterized by jacks ripping guitar, and the little elementary diddies serve as a port in the storm. Instead, here, they are featured heavily and it falls flat with me.

Pensaba que Jack y Meg eran hermanos desde siempre, hoy me enteron que estuvieron casados !!! y que siguieron en the white stripes incluso después del divorcio !!!! pero volviendo al disco, meh el blues-rock no es para mi

Good group. Didn’t stay around long enough. Great videos, good songs.

I respect them, I like them but I don't love 'em.

I hate the white stripes. This was like sonic torture. Got halfway through before I folded.

Blue Orchid - liked it, even with the fuzzy, choppy vocals. The Nurse - crap My Doorbell - not bad Little Ghost - crap The Denial Twist - I liked Instinct Blues - I liked The vocals are crap, so the album is deliberately overproduced to try to do it's best to hide this flaw. Torn between a 2 and 3, but the 2 wins out

It came out of the gate swinging, but I found myself repeatedly, checking the tracklist to see how soon it would end. Sophomore lyrics over derivative music made for a boring listen.

the white stripes are well known for their garage band sound, but get behind me satan has a stronger garage band presence than i've heard on elephant or one of jack white's solo albums (both as part of this album project). for being released after elephant (the album that skyrocketed the white stripes into popular culture), this album is way more bare bones. in some ways, i hear a lot of early seventies style inspiration--somewhat reminiscent of the doors. though this album was just okay for me, i am obsessed with this album title.

No more Jack White, please!

Eh. Too close to the last album by same group.

Ok ok. I’m done with Jack White/White Stripes. I did like this one better than the last but still just a 2.

Jack should stick with playing guitar rather than tinkering around with marimba, tambourine, and maracas. But I guess it’s hard to jam out with the guitar when you are singing about doorbells.

This did not age well.

An okay album but no real standouts for me.

Weirder than I thought it would be

I just don't like The White Stripes or what they do. I can appreciate some "garage rock" for the energy and a lot of rhythm guitar riffs, but the simplified bluesy take of The White Stripes doesn't do anything for me.

Got to admit the effort to try to sound different and props for the marimba but this was quite annoying. No objection here for leaving it out of the current book list.

I think Jack White is a very talented musician, but this album feels like all their others too me. It's too scattered in the attempt to show its range that it comes off as shallow, and this lack of depth fails to pull it out of the hollow morass it's stuck in.

Trying too hard

I really don't like the melodies on many of these songs here. They come across almost as nursery rhymes. Was that intentional?

I’ve liked some of their music but this one was super lackluster; the songwriting and drumming and guitar riffs are all bland and basic. It is funny how much this one sounds like a poor parody of their better work Definitely doesn’t need to be on the list since this group has two other albums that do everything this one does better

Mid stripes

Just not worth listening to imo. A couple okay songs but mostly boring throughout. Nothing interesting really done in the whole thing. Never gonna revisit tbh

White Stripes are interesting guys, authentic sound, over the top drive, interesting approach to performance. But it's not really my style. Nevertheless, they are definitely authentic, bright and the album is solid and high quality.

Honestly it’s felt all over the place and just not an enjoyable listen from to back. Really appreciate the white stripes but unfortunately this album misses the mark with me.

Interestingly unexpected. Not too many things I like over all. Kind of expected better but I guess that's just me not realizing what kind of artist they were

i'm not a huge fan of the white stripes even in the best of times, and this is far from the best of times for the white stripes

I do like jack white but idk about this one, songs seemed a bit repetitive and I was looking forward to the album ending so leaving towards a dislike for me

Liked the variety of instruments, Jack White's voice, and especially the song I'm Lonely. I could relate - and - it made me laugh. But overall - not my style of music. Some of the songs sounded very screechy.

It's just totally fine. Nothing remarkable in the slightest, but nothing bad and nothing I'd choose to listen to again.

Like a zebra, I guess.

It was too minimalist for me, and I didn't enjoy a lot of the alternative percussion. I went in expecting something heavier based on the album title, so maybe I would have a different experience if I knew what to expect.

This is my second White Stripes album to review, after White Blood Cells. The only song I was familiar with before listening to this album was "Blue Orchid," which I thought was fantastic. I loved Jack White's falsetto singing, the crashing cymbals, and the heavier-than-a-ton-of-bricks guitar riff. I also enjoyed "My Doorbell," with its chorus of up-tempo vocals and the bluesy "Little Ghost" with its tambourine and mandolin playing. Other than those songs though, I thought this album was pretty boring. The other songs felt like filler, and they didn't offer anything unique and they didn't expand on the sound established by the stronger songs. I think The White Stripes are talented, but their albums just don't hit the mark for me.

To be honest, the only song I already knew, was 7 Nation Army. IMHO that‘s the only song worth listening to. Absolutely not my taste.

It's not the greatest of there's TBH and there is Meg's singing....

Ei tuhoa miestä, mutta harmillisen tylsähköä ja matalan oksan hedelmien poimintaa..

2/5 forgetful

I actually quite like Jack White and The White Stripes but I don't dig this record so much. It's like they're only half there, or trying to do something they can't/shouldn't. It's fine but not something I would put on for fun.

White stripes heb ik nooit echt gewaardeerd op 7 nations na, dit album vond ik zeer saai

Jesus Christ, definitely not for me, even though I like some of The White Stripes' songs.

Just a few note worthy songs on this album. Generally more rock-blues piano-based than their previous guitar-led albums. Starts well, but gets less interesting as it goes along. Overall a bit disappointing really.

Some absolute stinkers amongst some decent songs. Blue Orchid, My Doorbell and The Denial Twist stood out. A few of these just sounded like bad demo tapes though. It's chaotic but not in a way that makes sense. It's like they knew what their good songs were and spaced them out between some absolute garbage in between, just hoping that no one noticed.

I had White Blood Cells and Elephant on cd back in the day, but skipped this one. I think Doorbell is still a jam. This should be a good Monday album. Actually, it kind of sucks. Blue Orchid sounds like they were trying to recapture the jock jam power of Seven Nation Army again, it's decent. The Nurse is meh, marimba is cool I guess but the song is not. My Doorbell is pretty good, but not as good as I remembered. Forever For Her is plodding and silly plus marimba. Little Ghost is a moment of bluegrass but it's hard to listen to Jack's put-on Appalachia quaver. Denial Twist is a proper jam. White Moon is a bore. Instinct Blues is just Jack White doing blues noodling on his guitar and singing about different creatures being horny. Passive Manipulation is a 35 second weirdly incestuous refrain sung by Meg. Take, Take, Take is not good enough for Rita Hayworth. Ugly As I Seem is a bore. Red Rain is bordering unlistenable. I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) is a jokey blues tune a la "Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz"

Some good, some bad. Can't see me listening to the whole album again.

Backyard Band

Eh. Something about Jack White's voice hits me wrong. Musically good.

Jack weet mij meestal wel te raken met zijn linkse en rechtse hoek, maar dit waren echt te veel gemiste kansen voor een technische KO.

Instrumentals were great, but hate the lead singers style.

Franchement chiant au point où c'est drôle xD genre parfois c'est lourd mais ça répète la même chose pendant genre 3 minutes

It’s like shitty rock-opera: 2 star

Eh... Blue orchid 💙🌸 The Denial Twist 👀😌 Passive Manipulation 🔥✨

I love how experimental it is. However, this album is not something that I would like to listen to in the background. Great blend of genres though. A little too chaotic

Blue Orchid i The Denial Twist ok.

Blue Orchid a hall of fame rammer. The rest pretty meh

Not my fav White Stripes album

Once again, I don't get The White Stripes, this is all over the place and not particularly good. It's very self-indulgent, there's not a lot else to say about it.

A very different style to Elephant (which was only a couple of years before I think?), much less of the loud guitar sound, much more reflective, bluesy music. Doesn't sound hugely different to a weaker Rolling Stones album to be honest, it lacks a bit for me. Blue Orchid is a good song - it's still got the energy that they had on the previous album, as does (to a lesser extent) My Doorbell - but much of the rest is a bit flat. Feels like he disappeared up his own arse in the midst of all the hype at this point about him being a genius, and it's a bit too self indulgent. 2/5.

Well this started out quite nicely with Blue Orchid, which sounds quintessentially White Stripes. Its interesting that they decided to lean more on the piano versus the guitar for most of the songs but I'm not quite convinced that its a better sound. I always come back to comparing their songs to their classic Seven Nation Army, but that's probably an unfair comparison because I don't think anything they do can ever equal that.

I'm normally a fan of the White Stripes, but this didn't do it for me. I think it's an evolution of where they were before, but, I don't know if this is something you need to hear or if it's something that you'll appreciate if you like the band already.

Kind of boring Yup

My Doorbell is kinda fun. Love the cover art. But if this album is in the top 1001, some of my favorite records are in trouble. Just not really my bag overall.

I appreciate the aesthetic of the album as a whole but i mostly want some more bangers

Found the album to be pretty average on the whole. The singles were really the highlights while the other songs felt like filler. Not a fan of the album.

fühl i iwie 0

You already have "Elephant" and "White Blood Cells" on this list. You could have left this one off. There are no hits here. Almost every track feels unfinished and Jack's writing is particularly childish compared to earlier albums. I'm not sure what possessed Jackie boy to stray so far from his wheelhouse but it didn't work. While the other two White Stripes albums on the list inarguably merit inclusion, this one just doesn't belong here.

First song was pretty solid, but most of the album just has strange instrumentation that felt sporadic and out of sync and unmemorable songs. I do enjoy some other songs by The White Stripes, but this album was largely not my thing.

This was just okay for me; totally unremarkable. I found that to be disappointing because I generally enjoy the White Stripes’ garage rock aesthetic. This possibly requires additional listens, but only one of these songs, “My Doorbell”, stuck with me.

all over the place, not what I expected from a White Stripes album

Slow Lyrics good To many similiar songs

Meh... I thought this was a bit overblown.

There’s probably enough ideas on here to make a decent EP, but not enough to warrant a full album. Like their other 2 records on here, it’s all a bit sparse for me. No way should they have 3 albums on this list.

This feels like a distillation of the earlier White Stripes sound but with all of the fun stuff stripped away. Almost too minimalistic to make it good music and instead it feels like it's a Jack White ego piece

Nothing Jack White has ever really hit for me and this was no exception. The jankiness is supposed to be charming I guess, but it fell on the side of annoyance for me more often. Every time I was getting really peeved though, a pleasant or catchy track would poke its head out to keep me trundling along. The rockier cuts really just leave something to be desired - I know they're a duo, but it sounds sooo thin I can't! Two and a half. Fave track: As Ugly As I Seem

Some decent songs but overall pretty mediocre. 2.5.

While I wouldn’t put this on for personal listening, I can see why it has charm, as well as having some hits on the album. Didn’t really do it for me.

It was ok.

This album did not do it for me. Just didn’t feel inspired at all and I can’t even remember any of the songs even though I listened to it yesterday

This album can’t be highly regarded??? I am not a fan of the white stripes but this one in particular is not good…objectively speaking

Forgettable schlock

1. orchid - 1 2. nurze - 0 3. doorbell - 0 4. her - 1 5. ghozt - 1 6. tuuizt - 1 7. moon - 1 8. bluez - 2 9. pazzive - 1 10. take - 1 11. ugly - 1 12. rain - 2 13. lonely - 1

Weird whining

Lord. Three WS albums on this list? Let's meet half way and agree there are only 998 albums I need to listen to before I die. Jack Whyte turned me off right away with his "there will probably be a fistfight" comment about getting in the same room with The Edge and Jimmy Page. There are about 1001 guitar players I would've put in that doc before JW. Granted, if you like any of these songs, you'll likely enjoy all of them. I'm still open for that White Stripes song I like. Maybe it's out there somewhere ...

just cooked up some bs🔥🔥

OD-ed Fleetwood Mac trying to conceive Scissors Sisters or what? While I have never been a fan of The White Stripes, I can't deny that they are talented and have solid songs - but this album is just bad (and the moustache doesn't make it any better..)

It's alright. He has a nice voice and the music isn't bad, but nothing really jumps out at me. I skipped a bunch of the songs from the first half of the album because I just didn't like them. Instinct Blues is quite good though and I'll get that. 1/5 stars.

i have always disliked this band. his voice annoys me. the nurse sounds like a scrapped PBS kids theme song. not in a good way. am i not artsy enough to appreciate? i dont care. if i had to listen to this regularly i’d kill myself the doorbell sounds like a rip off a possibly good song. like how elvis stole music from black people except at least he was talented. little ghost sounds like a song written and sung by railroad workers. the denial twist is catchy and an improvement but sounds like no rest for the wicked but i hate that songs vibe wow this is fucking awful turn it off

hace tanto no escuchaba algo tan nefasto y repudiable

No me gustó.

"No, listen right. What if we just had basic percussion and a slightly whiney vocal AGAIN? It seemed very popular the last four times so let's not change a thing"

Well, we’ve already been through this once. I was wholly unimpressed by Elephant, the other White Stripes album here. Does that mean I’ll be wholly unimpressed by this one? Maybe. Yes. Definitely. There are maybe 3 good songs on this whole album. Everything else is kind of worthless. "Blue Orchid." Awesome. Great. Love it. "The Nurse." Interesting. Not great, but interesting. Then you're exposed to 5 whole songs of the most annoying, uninteresting, absolutely nothing music that you'll ever hear. It is just so wack."Instinct Blues" thankfully is incredible, and the songs following it are actually pretty bearable. Sadly the damage is already done, especially since the last two songs are trash. I don't know man. This album is really bad. I don't enjoy this much at all. There's no point, and even the good songs are pretty unimpressive. I wish it was good, but I genuinely don't know what I expected. Even the good is too formulaic to love. Even the great is too unimpressive to respect. Probably my least favorite album so far, other than MAYBE wild wood. 2.8/10

I dont like it...

boringg

This is another one of those bands that I guess I just don't understand. Just not my jam, and I'm bewildered by the popularity. Oh well. Hollow, tinny and screechy. It just makes no sense.

Album 6: Ya know, I don't think I needed to hear that before I died actually It's a perfectly fine album. I don't think it was for me though. Having just listened to White Blood cells 4 days ago I was disappointed that I didn't gel with this album as well. I felt inspired, engaged and took something away from the last album. White Blood cells had an interesting tone and a solid identity that I missed here. Even without reference to their last album, Get Behind Me Satan felt like a collection of half journeys. The selected sound font felt incomplete, the experimental ideas felt like an empty promise. and Jack's lyrical and vocal performance felt dishonest to me somehow. I did however enjoy Meg's vocal and drum performance here. None of the tracks left a lasting impression and this is the first album that has me doubting the panels selection. In the context of list I'm giving it a 1/5, but in general i'd rate it a 2/5

Satan is behind me

The songs are quite diverse different but not for me

I just don't get what people see in the White Stripes.

A deeply, deeply irritating album. Why it's anywhere near an essential albums list, when there are some good albums in the White Stripes' back catalogue, is beyond me.

Could've had another Bowie album ffs

This album doesn't really do anything for me. Marimba with guitar stings is not something I would have expected to work, which is mainly because it doesn't. Big plonky piano on top of drums similarly not for me. It's so strange and discordant, and I just don't get it.

Not my thing, but I respect it.

You can't even tell where one song ends and the next begins. He sounds constipated.

Nada mi rollo

God, that doorbell song. I hate it. I really, really, hate it. It's the one of the worst things anyone's ever done, and I'm not just limiting that to music. Of all the despicable crimes humans are capable of, that wretched song is right up there. If one more White Stripes record crops up on this list, I'll... well, I don't know what I'll do, BUT I'LL BLOODY THINK OF SOMETHING. I haven't listened to the rest of the album, and I'm not bloody going to because it'll be shit.

out-obnoxing himself on the opener and boring himself on the rest. here is only one stripe, and it's barely here

Dogshit

No, thanks!

I really did not enjoy this one. I heard what they were trying to do, but it did not turn into something I wanted to hear. The ingredients were there, but something weird happened in the kitchen.

This is awful I'm sorry. If you ever see me listening to this album again it's a cry for help

This really rubbed me wrong way for some reason. There's nothing exactly wrong with it but I really didn't like it, a thoroughly unpleasant listening experience.

No. The drums and guitar don’t sound like they’re playing the same song, with no subtlety in the drumming at all. Only good part is the use of the xylophone

really did not like the nurse - just felt like a clash of styles. my doorbell was annoying. overall did not vibe with this album

A rough listen, think I've have rather listened to their doorbell ringing than a song about their doorbell ringing.

These are the seven nation army guys?? Ok let's hear it emo rock. This is good. Like yeah. Emo rock. Pretty classic. Not much else to say. Why are we suddenly doing a nursery rhyme. Ok what is this lowkey. What are we doing. Why are we thinking about your doorbell. I don't give a fuck. This is not for me why are we making lullabies. I do not like this. Favourite: Blue Orchid Least favourite: The Nurse

In a competitive field, this is the worst Jack White project that this book has inflicted on me. I despise this band.

This did the opposite of nothing for me, I actively disliked my time listening to this. Annoying out of tune vocals from Jack White over uninteresting melodies. The marimba was kind of fun for a moment but got old pretty quickly. If it didn't have The White Stripes name it would not be anywhere near this list it feels like. Fav Track: 6 - The Denial Twist

Can't stand the white stripes. Made it like 2 songs in and it sounds like every other album they have, and every other song they have, so I just turned it off.

This album fucking blows

no fucking way i get another White Stripes album 3 after the last one. fuck. off. i guess points for doing something different? still pretty fucking annoying. pass. deserves to be one of the 1001? no! no no no!

Wow, this is an overall terrible album. The more I listen the more I hate Jack White’s voice. I truly hated all but two tracks. Favorites: Blue Orchid, Denial Twist 1

Meh. The only redeemable track was Blue Orchid.

Después de escucharlo me sorprende que esté en esta lista. No parece ofrecer nada interesante. Casi todo en este álbum me resulta irritante, desde las melodías hasta las voces.

05/01/2026 1. blue orchid - liking the intro.... not sure about the vocals..... the drumming is really nice. guitar as well. is there any bass at all though?? actually don't think so???? bit boring, but alright as background music, i guess? 2. the nurse - marimba??? nice with the piano though. bit twee. like the maraca i guess. begging for some bass to appear. what is happening right now. really not fond of that one, but appreciate that they were trying to experiment, even if it isn't for me at all. 3. my doorbell - immediately do not like this. this is what i was thinking of when i worried about listening to 2000s indie rock. not looking forward to ten more songs of this...... piano is nice. these lyrics are so annoying and his vocals are not for me. one of the worst songs i have probably ever listened to. 4. forever for her (is over for me) - guitar is nice. like the piano as well. still boring and don't like the vocals. why is the marimba back.... the lyrics are annoying still as well. 5. little ghost - his voice is so annoying oh my god. the female singer is nice though. like the country inspired sound though. far too twee. 6. the denial twist - drums seem so loud compared to any of the other instruments?? still don't like the lyrics or his vocals. chorus is nice. 7. white moon - piano is really lovely. shame he's singing over it.... like the lyrics more, but faaarr too rhymey. this did not need to be this long... 8. instinct blues - guitar is reaaaalllllly nice.... still not entirely found of his voice, his vocals work better with the louder, distorted, rockier sound. lyrics are still annnoying. loving the screeches of the guitar. drums are nice as welll. still cannot hear any bass though!!! enjoyed it the most out of any song so far but probably wouldn't listen to again. 9. passive manipulation - different vocals. still not fond of them, but like them more. so glad this is so short. 10. take, take, take - he sounds like he's trying to sound like a warbly version of mick jagger in you can't always get what you want. rita hayworth mention <3 lyrics are stilll annoying though. 11. as ugly as i seem - liking the folksier acoustic guitar. liking this one. his vocals are still grating but i could maybe warm up to them if the rest of the album was like this. 12. red rain - liking the guitar at the start... liking this one more. the guitar and the drums are really great :) vocals are both annoying and alright at the same time. getting a bit repetitive and grating now. bell seems a bit too quirky. 13. i'm lonely (but i ain't that lonely yet) - very glad this album is ending. more gospel sounding. piano is nice. lyrics are better, but that's not saying much... how is there still a minute left. his voice is so bad it's making me want to kill myself. reaffirmed my dislike for indie rock after listening to that one kings of leon album. did not like any of the songs, it felt like they were trying too hard to be quirky and ended up contrived and annoying. this is the sort of music they torture people with at cia black sites.

Oh wow, I did not expect this to be as awful as it was. It’s always good to step out of one’s comfort zone as a musician, but hearing Jack White mess around on a marimba for half an hour was annoying.

Ärsyttävä laulu, ärsyttävät saundit. Kaikki ärsytti. Statsien mukaan joku spede tätäkin kuunnellu miljoonia kertoja.

Hated this album.

Borinnnggg

This album started strong and then it just went downhill for me from there.

boring

The one nice thing I can say about Jack White is that he’s a good guitar player. Unfortunately on this album he chose to play the marimba instead. Blue Orchid was a decent track, otherwise there’s nothing here for me.

Too much weird sounds for me

A few okay songs. But as an album, I can’t think of what setting you would play this. It’s not good for a party. It’s not good for the car. It just doesn’t have a home.

My high school kids’ band is better than this

How is this album on here?!?

Bluesssssssssssssss.

Inte alls min grej

Wow, this first song is... the worst. 2006 musta been a dry year for the alternative category if this garbage won a Grammy. I feel like this is a joke that I'm not in on. It's just terrible. A 1, for sure.

started off being a bit annoyed and irritated by the guys voice, I’m 5 tracks in now and a little bored. not really liking it i feel. I think I like red rain a little bit but not a lot i’m still annoyed. 1.5 stars

umm.. i try to be open minded and accepting of white people music... i really do... but i can't with this one LMAO

Not my style

Ikke vild med dem.

An absolute joke of an album.

Ill be the first to admit that I don't really get this music. Jack White's voice annoys me and besides some songs that are good (none of which are on this album), I don't understand the wild fandom for this kind of music. 2/10

I got White Blood Cells yesterday, so my review is the same: not a big fan of Jack White

This record is all over the place? Slightly too repetitive for me. The voice of Jack is grating, too often. As Ugly As I Seem is the least worst track here? Not sure why this is in this list. There's no cohesion, no memorable tracks. Odd choice this.

Adds nothing new to guitar based rock

there isn’t space left in the world for the white stripes

I am getting too old for this shit.

The Nurse made me feel like I was stuck in purgatory. Also dropped my croissant listening to this. Windows down, my half eaten croissant flew out the window when I set it down for a second.

Not a fan, not my cup of tea.

This is some of the worst music I’ve ever heard. Yuck. Couldn’t finish it.

First off, not a fan of the Black Stripes. I find their songs to be a disjointed, tuneless, and incredibly irritating. To be included in 1001 need to hear albums makes me question the musical wisdoms of its creator. The piano and piano solos are heavy handed and simplistic. One way for me to appraise the worthiness of a song is if my toe taps. If there’s music playing, I’m tapping my toes. For this album? Not so much. My feet sat flat footed. Really, just horrid.

0% banger

So very mediocre

torture

Rétrospectivement, que s'est-il passe en 2005, pour qu'un tel engouement naisse ? Sur la forme Ok, y'a un truc, mais sur le fond musical...les Black Keys ont fait mieux depuis... Globalement surfait.

Tuneless crap

Nope, the White Stripes are not for me. Did not enjoy this album and forced myself to listen all the way.

Was not into this album at all. Could barely get through it. Or just didn't interest me at all.

Very weird

Horrible Album. Atrocious and made me stop listening to music for months simply because of the awful taste it put in my mouth.

I like The White Stripes, I've never been huge on their music but I've had albums of theirs I really appreciate (De Stijl is excellent), this isn't one of them. I think since the first time I heard Blue Orchid (the song that made me discover TWS, mind you) was that it was... cool but never stuck with me, especially as I discovered their other big songs and realized that this was a cool band that was enjoyable, bur every time I tried to return to Blue Orchid it was just nothing. Then I tried going through their albums and when I got to Get Behind Me Satan it just felt different in a way I simply didn't enjoy, not even because they changed it to be more bluesy instead of garage-y (especially because I'd argue I like Jack White's solo material to his WS stuff and that is further into the blues/Americana thing he loves to play), but instead because it feels like they wanna do something bluesier and weirder and it ends up not working at all, jack wants to deploy all his usual writing and singing quirks and they just sound worse than they should; the repetition on My Doorbell or the entire sound to I'm Lonely just feels like things that they are usually good at being made into something extremely unenjoyable. I don't know, it feels like one of those that every time I've given it a chance it never clicks and maybe it's also that I'm not feeling great today, but I doubt I will find much enjoyment in this one whenever I inevitably go back to TWS' discography, and perhaps I will have more concrete criticisms of the other songs, but as it stands, this one ain't it Jack and Meg

Ugh! Did not like any of it

Way back in the beginning of this list I got a White Stripes album and generously assumed it was a matter of personal taste that I didn’t appreciate. But now a couple of 100 albums in and there are many legendary albums and artists I’ve yet to see and along comes a 2nd White Stripes album and I can’t help but feeling punked. This is crap. They don’t write songs they write sentences and repeat them for 3 minutes. Complete bollocks.

- little ghost made me suicidal - Dear lord I can’t stand this guy’s voice - I just want this to be over - This literally can’t get any worse - The last song was quite nice actually

Incredibly boring. Nothing good to say about it.

2/4 albums have had Jack whites terrible voice.

Fav: White Moon Least Fav: As Ugly As I Seem

Favorite: Blue Orchid?? Least Favorite: All of Them

Boooooooooo

3.25 rym la gente che canta in falsetto mi urta..... no odio questa roba

Har ingen aning om varför detta är ett album man måste göra innan man dör? Hade inget att komma med tycker ja Bästa låt: Nurse

I don’t listen to the White Stripes.

Really bad. Some white stripes is ok, but this album didn’t have a single song on it that I liked. Really not sure why it’s on this list

bah white stripes

This was some boring ass thing

Unfortunately, this album just doesn't do it for me. Majority of these tracks feel unfinished and super empty. Regardless of Jack's vocal style, it's a little too whiny for me in this record. Not much drumming going on too :o Favourite tracks: Blue Orchid

It just felt a little whiny, and the whole thing didn't feel consistent. some cute tracks, but nothing I'd ever seek out again, or probably remember.

I’ve never cared for the White Stripes aside from a few songs. Listening to this album changed nothing

I'm not listening as i know i dont like the WS Not in the spirit of this think I know but I dont have the time for R O C K

this is unarguably the worst white stripes album why have the authors of this book done this to us? it's fine. it's got a couple singles that were fine to hear in a 00s alt rock shuffled playlist, but they are scattered throughout a desert of jack white being unproductively weird. a horrendous full-album listening experience.

Interesting sound…some songs decent, some not so much. Not a fan of the vocals.

Highlights: Take, Take, Take, Red Rain. Rating: 6

Horrible. Creepy.

Have you ever worked with someone talented who was then promoted and turned out to be a disaster at managing things? That is how I feel about Jack White. Probably a talented musician but should be under a grown up’s direction. This album feels like a bunch of half formed ideas from a jam session rather than thoughtful finished songs. I started listening in a relatively good mood and by the time it ended I was fairly annoyed.

It's not that its bad, just that it's nothing. They had the crazy idea to make stripped back blues based rock music with some fuzzy distorted guitars and emphasis on big riffs, for some reason this is very exciting to a large number of people and they're treated as important artists. They'd be a fun local band to see live doing throw-back rock, but 7 Nation Army catching on as a stadium rock anthem elevated them way out of their league. I guess being one of the last big bands standing holding a guitar and being very deferential towards rock tradition has meant they're carrying the torch for rock dudes. But they're scrapping the bottom of that barrel and coming up with pretty minimal ideas.

Don't see the allure

Stopped listening half way through 4th track. Every song is completely ruined by cymbal crashing, it's just awful. My ears hurt.

I wonder why this album is even on this list. I just cannot bring myself to enjoy this at all and my ears had a visceral reaction while listening. The vocalist is not in tune in some points(which can work but not how he does it) and his tone just makes my ears uncomfortable. The tunes stick in your head but you get a headache as a result. I hate speaking negatively on any type of music but this album truly dissapointed me and was very hard to even try listen to without wanting to rip out my ears.

Thought it was mid tbh , nothing rememberable at all , I can’t even say they’re like extremely bad but it’s all just the same amount of rock shite tossed together. Id give it a 2 or 3/10
