Queen of pop
Sceptical at first but ended up really liking this one. Solid pop album with great instrumentals. As a collective piece the songs go together well. Some tracks did feel like they could've been shortened but oh well.
♫ Listening to "Like a Prayer" by Madonna (Like a Prayer, 1989) ♫
Some solid songs here. My favourites were the title track, Dear Jessie and Oh Father.
I don’t mind a little Madonna now and then. This is a good album and I enjoyed it. Some songs weren’t as exciting as the hits, but it wasn’t too hard to stay engaged. Lyrics, production, instrumentation, and structure are all fine. The writing and arrangements are where this really shines. Makes it special. 4/5
Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, and Cherish are so good, they earn the 4 stars, and I'm sorry the rest kept this album from being even greater. Loved the last track too--great guitar on that one.
Like A Prayer is so good, along with some great pop bangers. There are also a lot of duds. 3.5 rounded up.
This is some good, quintessential 80's pop. There are some fantastic singles off this album that became pop anthems for a reason and one or two fun discoveries as well (Dear Jessie). But for an album of this length, a few singles and good discoveries meant a decent number of skips - keeping this from a 5 star album in my book.
Never been a huge Madonna fan, so was very pleasantly surprised with this! Classic 80s production of course; still sounds fresh as a daisy. Favourite tracks: Like a Prayer, Till Death Do Us Part, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Oh Father.
Cherish was a new one for me! But, the whole album is so poppy and fun.
The queen of pop had not yet made a bad album upon this release. In fact, each was better than the last. This was pop queen for several decades, and a slice of her prowess at its peak. Stand out is Express Yourself, followed by the title track and pretty much everything else, (props to prince)!
pretty solid pop stuff. a little carried by the singles though
Holds up pretty well
It’s best ideas are from someone else, but still quite a good listen
Good poppy background music. Not my cup of tea but enjoyable
This is fantastic. Perhaps a bit of nostalgia, but it's good start to finish.
One one hand, the first three songs jam. And the album closes out with Prince ripping... always a treat. On the other, everything in between is so hit or miss. It's worth a listen.
Pretty good pop, what I think of when I think of Madonna Liked the general themes as well, was consistent without being repetitive.
reminds me of Kris and maybe Sanger? Where was I then?
Pretty cool
Not a fan of how religious the album is, but the music is phenomenal 80s pop. Almost every song is solidly great, which should be unsurprising given Prince helped on several of them.
top
madonnalla oli vahva albumi neljää tähteä tykkään tästä aikakaudesta poppia subjektive muttta silti objektia 4 star rouvalle.
Madonna demonstrating surprising versatility. Aside from the three singles, “Love Song” — a duet with Prince — and “Dear Jessie” stand out as examples of her willingness to take creative risks and step outside of her crafted image as a dance pop chanteuse. A robust effort overall.
The breakout for the original female popstar
i think i like madonna ? i like i would’ve been a stan if i was in high school during this time. okay transitions! i see you! act of contrition was really weird for me and almost ruined the album. but it’s the final song and i feel like the final song is usually the weirdest. just felt like i was tripping and this song was used for the montage.
Like a Prayer is such a great song. Some other great songs on this album as well. Madonna is one of my favorites from the 80s.
Madonna got sauce
I thought it was very good, including to big hits in "Like A Prayer" and "Cherish", which I kinda liked more. Everything else was mostly good, too. 7/10.
Prince!
lots of pop
began to lose focus/interest in the middle of the album, but once I read about the context of the lyrics I could enjoy the slow ones (very deep!) and got back to enjoying the second half to end
Great album. I was only familiar with the title track, which is an all-time classic, but there are plenty of other bangers on here. Generally, all the upbeat songs were hits for me, while most of the slow songs felt like filler - the latter are the only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star album
I skipped this at first because I said I didn’t feel like listening to Madonna right now. But when I played it I was reminded how superbly talented and capable she is. Her voice. The writing and production. The work they put into it to make it perfect. All top tier. No compromise. That’s a star.
like a prayer
This is a great example of a good pop album: fun, enjoyable, easy to dance and sing along to. Madonna really knows her stuff, although I couldn't get over the 80s sound for the 5-star, but that's on me.
It’s wild to me that Madonna used to be considered a bad influence on girls, I want every teenager I know to howl along to Express Yourself.
Zdecydowanie wolę taką, starszą, popową, balonową Madonnę. Płyta trochę zwalnia w drugiej połowie, brakuje czegoś z powerem, bo są same bujane ballady (aka. 7/10
Wasn't expecting too much, some singles admittedly great and filler. Well no, that's a disservice to Mads, this is a great album, enjoyed the other tracks just as much.
A beautiful album. Loved the variety of sounds and themes. From love to religion, from funky to chill, this album has it all. 4 stars.
I mean it’s the queen of pop guys. I honestly have never listened to anything by Madonna knowing it’s by Madonna, and I went in with high expectations. They were met. I was a little worried this would be one of those things that was really fun for everyone in the 90’s but going back to it it would just sound like the 90’s. But actually it aged well. Also didn’t expect the religious confrontation in such a pop album, but it was great.
Honestly this is the standard for pop. Really solid very fun good stuff.
I remember the ruckus when the video for Like A Prayer came out. As always with such things, it had a Streisand effect. This and her album made it clear that Madonna wasn't just some pop singer but wrote her songs with themes that mattered to her, controversial as they might be. There's still enough pop and dance on this album to make it a mainstream success, and that's what it is in the end.
Absolutely solid album
I'm rather reluctantly giving it a 4, and mostly because I do love Like a Prayer, and because it is her best overall album. I honestly think she's a weak vocalist but she's worked her flamboyance well.
Good album, definitely a classic.
Yeah nice but maybe self aware films like Deadpool were a mistake.
Amazing how some one with a very average singing voice can make such a great album.
Streamlined perfect made pop music
This album renewed my faith in pop albums. Listening to other pop from this cite, I thought that all pop was either hit or miss (and if hit, overplayed). However, I thought that this music was pleasantly better than average. Not groundbreaking but decent.
Madonna i love you i wish you were real
When I was a kid, Michael Jackson died, and his popularity grew tremendously at that time, especially among us kids, who were getting in touch with this 80s pop music for the first time. Along with this whole new world that appeared before us, a kind of silly rivalry also grew between the King and Queen of Pop. The boys were fans of Michael, and the girls were fans of Madonna. And it was as simple as that: the boys didn't listen to Madonna because it was a girl thing, and the girls didn't listen to Michael because it was a boy thing. Silly, right? But because of that, Madonna is probably the most famous artist whose songs I've never listened to until today! And only today I realize what a huge mistake I made all these years. I had a lot of fun listening to this album, and just like in 2009, a new world of 80's pop music is once again open up before me to explore... even though it's a "girl thing."
Great album, littly too poppy for my taste, but the hits hit good.
It's catchy, and also has a more diverse array of themes around its songs than I thought it would have.
There's not a whole lot I can say about this album. It's perfect 80's pop music. Cheesy in places, sickly sweet, perfect production. I guess there's a reason why Madonna is dubbed the Queen of Pop. The title track is a classic. Prince pops up on a track or two which was a surprise. 'Cherish' is the epitome of 80's pop, my god it is so ridiculously catchy. 'Dear Jessie' has some nice classical elements to it and doesn't go in directions you think it will. I genuinely don't think there's a bad track on here. Some a bit "less good" than others (I didn't care too much for 'Oh Father' or 'Act Of Contrition') but overall a very good album.
Throwback Madonna
i don't think i realized how beautifully simple and yet emotionally tactful Madonna's melodies were on this album. Also, the chord progressions are not at all straightforward - almost playful and yet sorrowful, which seems to be reflected in some of catholic imagery she weaves into her songs.
Cracking singles - including the title track which is my favourite Madonna song by a long margin. A few dodgy album tracks but the singles are stellar.
The album kicks off strong, but after the first two tracks, it starts to lose some of its punch. Still, there’s no denying its influence, Like a Prayer helped shape pop music and remains one of Madonna’s most important releases.
Straightforward pop goodness. Lots of bass makes the production stand out but I don't think it does anything to step it past "very competent" into "exceptional".
eh um baita album de fato
Love Madonna.
Before she went batshit crazy some absolute stonkers on this one
Pretty much peak Madge.
Amazing singles and pretty terrible album tracks but this one is close to my heart regardless. Not a Madonna fan but I’d absolutely buy this and keep it on my shelf.
The hits rock and everything is solid.
First Madonna album for me on here, and it seems to be the first one where she actually got a bit of critical respect. This '80s synth-pop isn't really my favorite genre, but this is generally a solid album. It starts off real hot with one of her most famous songs, "Like a Prayer". It's great and the energy is solid. "Express Yourself" is good too, but my biggest issue with the album is that the next three songs are a bit of a miss. The third song ("Love Song") is a collaboration with Prince, and while I like Prince enough, this song was not good and completely sucked the life out of the album that started out strong. The next two songs aren't quite so bad, but it doesn't really pick back up again until "Cherish", which starts a much stronger run on the back half of the album. Madonna shows a pretty wide range here, and while she's fine on the slower ballady songs, she definitely shines as a pop star. There seems to be a ton of context here about how this slotted into her career arch and some of the themes she tackles here. I'm not going to get into that, but I think this was an enjoyable album in a genre that isn't top tier for me. I get the appeal though, and "Like a Prayer" is a top-tier track. Favorite song: Like a Prayer Other: Express Yourself, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Oh Father, Spanish Eyes 1/19/25
Drum 4 Pkt.
Oh early Madonna...really so much of a game changer. When I hear this album it is a bridge between 80s and 90s pop music. Researching Love Song (because I was 100% Prince was the male voice) and it turns out Prince was the uncredited guitarist on multiple songs and Stevie Nicks actually wrote Love song!!! Sometimes when too many good people are involved it becomes a mess but this really turned out so well. Like a Prayer is so fire and Express Yourself is such an amazing Girl Power Anthem. Which really is what makes this album so great, growing up Catholic I knew people that burned her CDs and forbid their kids from listening to her music and listening to it now that is just crazy! All she is talking about is female empowerment, expecting a man to treat you well, and enjoying love. What is so wrong and crazy about that!?!? I can't say its perfect because some of the lesser knowns didn't totally hit, but this is an album that helped shaped 90's music and female empowerment!
I've never listened to this full album before so I felt a little like a virgin. Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish... all great hits! For the non-hits I like Till Death Do Us Part (great melody) and Keep It Together. Cool that she collaborated with Prince on Love Song. I didn't like that song at first because it was so minimal but after a few listens it's growing on me. I like Act of Contrition at the end. She's confessing all of her sins that she did while making this album by just cutting loose and making a wtf noise core piece. I wish more artists would end an album that way.
It's a much more evocative, moody album than I expected, which was a pleasant surprise, but frontloading it with two of the greatest pop songs ever written and following those with a Prince collaboration creates an imbalance. Imagine if you get the emotional peak of "Express Yourself" at like, track 5 or 6 or 7? Would hit in a totally different way, energy-wise and thematically.
ok it's already clear that I'm the Madonna stan in the group so I'm not even going to try and hide it. And I want to give this a 5. I partially think that any album that has "Like a Prayer", the song, on it, deserves a 5. Any album that has this much collaboration between Madonna and Prince (!!!) on it hypothetically deserves a 5. But.......while I'm willing to hype up Music at the expense of any reason, this is where I gotta take off the rose colored glasses. This is definitely where Madonna became too big too fail, where Pepsi couldn't stop Madonna then or where Lady Gaga couldn't stop her in the future. But are the songs all that great? Some of them definitely not. "Love Song" comes up short as the almost fanfiction-worthy collaboration of the 80s, and "Dear Jessie" goes for cute and innocent but ends up too maudlin. Of course, though, there's other triumphs - the anthemic triumph of "Express Yourself", the barely-proto-new jack swing groove of "Keep It Together". It's a shame, because if you'll forgive the critical pretense this album feels like the apotheosis of all of Madonna's 80s ambitions. But it's not the true Madonna 5. (which imo is True Blue. If you want to fight me on that though I get it.)
Some of y'all weren't around in the 80s and 90s and it shows. Madonna pushed all of the buttons and she wasn't like a lot of today's pop princesses that don't have the talent to back up their antics. Madonna did. Like a Prayers made a lot of people nervous. The Catholic Church called for boycotts, Pepsi had a collaboration film in the can and then cancelled it. Long story short, Madonna ran in the 80s so Sabrina Carpenter can strut in the 20's. 3.5/5
This album is better than I expected. Has some less pop centric material that I had not heard before that I found interesting.
As far as bubblegum pop goes, this is fantastic. I've been underrating Madonna for long enough, but this list is slowly making me realise that she is much better and more original than I initially thought.
A well made pop album from a master at her prime.
Pretty good pop album. Nothing earthshattering but fun throughout. Started off really strong.
A lot of mad Donna's greatest hits. All round very strong album. Would recommend
I of course had heard of Madonna, but I'd never sat down and listened to one of her albums in full before. It was definitely an enjoyable experience and is a piece of quintessential 80s pop. This falls into the category of pop that I do actually enjoy. Also something I thought of was while listening to this was how I could see how much inspiration Lady Gaga probably got from Madonna. For example, Express Yourself is essentially the 80s version of Gaga's Born This Way. It was definitely less hard to pick a couple of songs for my mega playlist off of this album as well. Cherish and, of course, Like a Prayer were my 2 favorites.
You can't really argue with what Madonna does, love it or hate it, she's very good at her pop thing. This album is full of classic pop tracks, easy to sing along with, easy to dance to, easy to relate to. I'm not a big pop fan these days but I enjoy most things she put out through the 80s. It's so streamlined and polished. Good stuff. 4⭐️
4.5 Like prayer is a timeless banger
Some absolute bangers let down by some middling tunes.
okay now that I've been transported back to high school soccer bus rides to away games, there are some real bangers on this album but also some really slow/weird jams.
11/13/24. I admittedly haven't listened to much Madonna, but now I understand why this album is so beloved by many people. Well crafted songs, and flows very nicely - you stay engaged. It also has something for everybody, in the best way.
A true pop legend in her prime here
gotta give it to her, very well made album, like a prayer is gold
When the title track kicked in, I was thinking steady on here, we might be looking at a 5 star record. Sadly, the rest of the album can't quite live up to that but it does have several great singles. Also evoked fond memories of being 9 years old and hearing this music via my friend's big sister.
Couple huge hits here, some decent songs, and some filler (like some of the Michael Jackson albums I’ve had on the project). When you’re such a sensation and putting out lots of music, they won’t all be hits. Can hear Prince’s influence on ‘Love Song’ for sure. Solidly 4/5
Nothing wrong with that
3/4
Madonna! Starts off with the certified banger, Like A Prayer. Till Death Do Us Part had some fun music, and then you hear the haunting lyrics, well done song. Spanish Eyes had great music and her voice was beautiful. All in all, a solid 80s pop album, good representative of the genre. Best song: Like A Prayer
The high energy stuff is some of the best pop I’ve ever heard but she loses me on the ballads.
The title track is fantastic. The rest is very solid
Reading the global reviews, man do people hate on 90's britpop (to be fair, the list seems to skew heavy on it). I liked this one. I recognized a few songs (the decade from 1995 to 2005 is sort of a sonic black hole for me as I was way too focused on growing my career).
Great album
Might be madonnas best, nails 80s pop down perfectly
Love.
Good pop album. Always liked Madonna.
Fuck Deadpool and Wolverine! If I listen to Madonna then I'm unstoppable. Favourite Songs: Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, Till Death Do Us Part, Pray for Spanish Eyes. Least Favourite Songs: Love Song, Act of Contrition.
Like a Prayer is a banger. Interesting that I think most of the world will be unfamiliar with the version of Express Yourself on the album - this is not the version we know from the music video. Cherish is good. The rest is m'eh. This 1989 album definitely feels like it is straddling the 80s and the 90s.
A fuun 80s album. Loved the first half much better but still a solid one
Just solid 80s pop
I didn't think I'd like this album but it was pretty good.
My only prior experience with Madonna is Weird Al's Like a Surgeon. It was fun and also rocked here and there. Album cover: B+. Sexy.
Extremely catchy. I had never listened to a Madonna album before. Like a Prayer is an absolute banger. The rest of the album falls off a little but still really enjoyable.
This is my first time listening to Madonna. She's kind of a lot like Michael Jackson? Maybe that was just the style of the time, but she's got a lot of those percussive beats behind her that remind me of songs like "Beat It". "Express Yourself" and "Keep it Together" are two good examples of what I mean. My favorite song is "Dear Jessie", it's got some Disney movie energy. I also really like "Till Death Do Us Part", and "Cherish". I like this album. I don't love the croony slower ballads, but I like all the more upbeat songs. 7/10
This is pretty good. Her voice is a weak point, but she makes it work like all the best-worst rock singers do. Prince puts some very recognizable fingerprints on his, but all the songs go personal familial catholic, and are still extended and danceable without outwearing their welcome. The title track is a monster pop song.
I mostly remember my sister and her friends listening to this album. Madonna wasn't the icon she is now, but this album was the start of that.
Sound album
Like a Prayer is an all time banger, Cherish and Express Yourself are up there too. A few stinkers in there that keep this album from being a 5.
Giving it 4 stars for the singles and how influential she is. Plus, Prince! And some good messages that stand the test of time. But there's some filler here that was hard to slog through.
Rather enjoyed this
I agree with Wiki description, there is more rock on this album compared to the pop sound on her previous releases. Plus the contributions from Prince is a bonus.
++: Express Yourself, Love Song +: Like a Prayer, Till Death Do Us Part, Promise to Try, Keep It Together +-: Cherish, Dear Jessie, Oh Father, Act of Contrition -: Spanish Eyes 7,9/10
4/5
A really solid, cohesive album. The background available on Wikipedia is really interesting in understanding the importance of this album, outside of its massive commercial success. It was a turning point for Madonna, who is historical and cultural contexts, is an essential figure in music. Obviously "Like a Prayer" is a standout, but there are plenty of great tracks here (I really liked the production and sound of "Till Death Do Us Part", even though the subject matter, and actual history from Madonna's life, is pretty heavy).
Oh dang I’ve been sleeping on Madonna. This album was pretty 🔥
3.5/5
Queen of Pop, banger album Like a prayer hitje Kende de rest niet Maar lekker albumpie
Stuðplata að mestu. Fíla hana vel.
Enjoyable. A little too same-y and bloated to get 5 stars though.
I think Cherish is the underdog on this It's a pretty solid pop record.
Nice
UNA OBRA MAESTRA MAS DE LA REINA DEL POP.
Like a Prayer Express Yourself Cherish Oh Father
The Queen of Pop sits securely on her throne—and with power comes the freedom to expand. Taking on themes of religion, domestic strife and death, Madonna sets herself up admirably to continue conquering the world in the 90s.
3.9 like a prayer is a favourite
Pleasantly surprised! I didn’t think I’d be into Madonna, but this album was the right combo of good beats and good lyrics. Like a Prayer: 👍 Express Yourself: 👍 Love Song: 👍 Till Death Do Us Part: 👍 Promise to Try: 👍 Cherish: 👍 Dear Jessie: 👎 Oh Father: 👎 Keep It Together: 👍 Pray for Spanish Eyes: 👎 Act of Contrition: 👍
I liked this more than I thought! Eked its way into a 4. The flow of the whole album was surprisingly seamless despite the knockout singles that I would have thought would be too star-studded to fit into any album lineup.
There was a lot going on here. The mix of religious themes and symbolisms with pop sensibility. The mixture of pop and experimental sounds. About the only thing I can really knock it for is it had just a couple of tracks that definitely would carry "required for radio play" tag during production.
Surprisingly creative. I have to hand it to Madonna, that was a wild ride.
4.5 Two of the greatest pop songs ever to start it off, then a fucking PRINCE duet?!? And then MORE songs that sound like PRINCE?? Incredible album.
Classic pop album with an iconic title track. Very 80s at times, which is a sign of its age.
Tiene temas increíbles
Top marks for Express Yourself alone
This album includes some massive hits but as an complete album it's pretty strong too. I liked that weird track near the end. Good to get something rough in there and not just polish.
Classic pop. Some songs are pretty bad. 4/5
Some musics lost in the album, don’t know why they’re in it. But a good album afterall
Better than anticipated. Madonna is a huge talent. Hard to not like her music if you have any appreciation for 80s pop. Cherish is by far my fav. 3.5/5
Like a Prayer is such a good album by outstanding artist Madonna. I loved the title track and the rest was great too! 7.5/10
Iconic
disco disco party party
Love Madonna, but some of these songs were eh.
Fun
So far I've heard her debut album, which I absolutely love and Ray Of Light which I also really liked. Weirdly now she has a high bar despite me not having huge interest outside of these two albums and the song Love Profusion The title track is absolutely outstanding. It's her biggest song fir a reason. Epic. Express Yourself is a great 80s pop song Love Song features and is written by my main man Prince is great. Til Death Do Us Part is a fantastic pop song. Great low key chorus, fun guitar solo,.Great tempo Promise to Try is the first ballad , a nice little palate cleanser before we go back to Cherish, another nice little pop ditty. Cherish has a great little chorus and a great little bridge where everything goes apart from the vocals and then it builds back up to another chorus with some great little vocal ad-libs Keep it together - great little funky riff at the start, and then a nice little vocal refrain comes in. Really like the Groove of this song. Love the vocals on this one. This is one of my favourites Pray for Spanish Eyes - Spanish guitar with a slow 80s beat. Chorus is okay. Song is fine but probably the weakest song on the album. Act of Contrition - nice little closer using the backing vocals from Like a Prayer with Madonna talking over the top. Not one of the best songs but it isn't meant to be. All in all this album is great. Really great. I prefer it to Ray Of Light and neck and neck with her debut album. Til Death Do Us Part is probably the highlight
Great album. Not my kind of music, but a good portion of this was very fun to listen to.
fun, pop
Fun! Highlights: Like a Prayer Express Yourself Keep it Together Last track is funny too!
Very fun album and really quite enjoyable tbh. Some stand out hits on it. You can hear the Prince influence through a lot of it. My favourite song was Dear Jessie! Like a prayer is still a masterpiece even now.
Madonna is nan absolute icon and, though I've not listened to many of her albums all the way through, when I have I've always enjoyed. This was no different, a genuinely enjoyable album that's very 'of it's time '
I'm all out of creative things to say today & late for the gym. Obviously I had heard some of these songs back in the day ...but never the full album. I read that Madonna had a lot more songwriting input on this album and Prince was involved. Also this was before she was corrupted by Dennis Rodman so solid four stars😂
Weirdest Pepsi commercial ever. Madonna was the original queen of pop. Add His Royal Purpleness and this album became her best work.
Popklassiker!
In addition perhaps to being Madonna's best work, Express Yourself is one of David Fincher's more memorable music videos. A quintessential gem of pop perfection.
Another fine Madge album. 4 stars. 5 stars for "Express Yourself"
A redemption in my listening experience with Madonna. Actually this album fucking slapped. So many notable tracks. Everything that I didn't know was a little shit but as a whole it was solid.
Wild that Like A Prayer is Madonna's fourth album. A stark difference to her previous poppy releases, she truly walked so others like Britney, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and even Taylor Swift could run. The album's concept is much more personal, speaking about her parents and the influence Catholicism had over her. The released singles here are probably some of her most famous, and much like most teens listening to music as they were growing up, this album still resonates with that demographic. Best: Like A Prayer; Express Yourself Worst: Spanish Eyes
I went into this only knowing the radio hits. Most of this album is just pure pop goodness. There's a couple of tracks that, to me, miss the mark a little. It's a good album, but not quite 5 star worthy.
I’ve never heard this album. I was too cheap to buy music when I was young, so I only knew radio hits. Shameful. I would have loved it. You can really hear the Prince influence in some songs. Don’t know if it’s aged well but my remaining 1989-era brain cells likey. 4.2
Album: Like A Prayer Artist: Madonna Year: 1989 Genre: Pop Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A true pop album! There’s a reason that Madonna is known as the Queen of Pop! So many bops on this record! Fave song: Like a Prayer Would I listen again? Absolutely!
Far better than I expected. A real mix of songs on here. Not just the pop you'd expect. Even if you don't think you'll enjoy this album, try it anyway.
Surprisingly better than just the hits I was familiar with.
Bonus star for offending organised religion.
Listening to this now, I feel like Madonna really liked Around the World in a Day by Prince. It's essentially a sanitised version of that (plus Like a Prayer). It's a great pop album as a result!
Favorite Tracks: Like a Prayer Express Yourself Dear Jessie Oh Father
I mean, it's Madonna!! Iconic
Very good album! Quite surprised it doesn't sound as dated as I thought it would.
Some 5* songs here and quite a few 3*s. But overall I still liked it quite a bit, understandable that this made a splash back in the day.
I feel like Madonna needs more albums on the 1,001 list though I can agree with the two chosen. She is the Queen of Pop for a reason, and it's not just that she sang catchy songs. This album really showed how a good a songwriter and lyricist she was, even though I think her previous album True Blue was the first demonstration of that. Live to Tell (my all-time Madonna favorite) and others from that album (Papa Don't Preach) show how mature she was already. I guess she completely put it together on this album and Like a Prayer might be my second favorite Madonna song for its depth of lyrics. Express Yourself ain't too shabby either and I've always liked Cherish even though I view it as a simple pop song. I don't own any Madonna albums and don't know many songs besides her biggest hit singles (the 3 previously mentioned are the only ones I know from this one), so other deep ballads that really impressed me on this album were Promise to Try, Oh Father, and Spanish Eyes. Till Death Do Us Part also has good lyrics but I can't decide if I like the up-tempo, Mario Bros-esque musical accompaniment or not. The album is not quite perfect, as I found her collaboration with Prince (Love Song) boring, Dear Jessie wandering, Keep It Together underwhelming, and Act of Contrition annoying.
Ok, I went in prepared to seriously dislike this album, but not only was it not terrible, it's actually pretty good. VERY 80s but had a lot of good moments, with excellent production (hat tip to Patrick Leonard, who I know from his work with Kevin Gilbert in Toy Matinee). Definitely enjoyed the Prince connection. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to listen to it again, but I can appreciate why it was huge and that's why I have to tip it to a 4. Favorite tracks: Like a Prayer (I rewatched the video - man people are whiners. It isn't nearly that controversial - regardless, it's a really good song), Express Yourself (very 80s, very Madonna, but a pretty good song), Love Song (hey, it's Prince), Till Death Do Us Part (again, a little 80s, but decent), Oh Father (very dramatic. And 80s. But grew on me), Keep It Together (nice funk, still very 80s). The rest are either too 80s, cheesy, or schmaltzy (and Act of Contrition was just weird, even if it had Prince shredding). Gotta admit it grew on me with several listens. Oh, well, I'm not going to say I like Madonna now, but this one deserves to be on the list.
The title track, "Express Yourself," and "Cherish" are among Madonna's best songs. And how did I not know about "Love Song" with Prince?! Crazy. Easy four stars.
Some of these were hits, while others were duds. Like A Prayer sits at the top along with Express Yourself & Cherish. And that duo with Prince was fabulous. The video for Like A Prayer was banned on MTv back in the day. But it was eventually aired (only at night) and pre-teen me couldn't get enough of that erotic & blasphemous imagery. Madonna had a knack for that in the 80s & 90s. Musically, it's both pop & gospel with a lot of spirit. Love it. The rest was a bit boring, but the album as a whole was a nostalgic listen. Solid 80s pop album. 4 stars.
Such a constant album from my childhood!
Classic
Very much of it’s time. Liked the first half of the album much more than the second half. Solid pop tracks.
A good album, great singing by Madonna. Didn’t enjoy every song, but Cherish, Oh Father, Like a Prayer and Keep It Together were good.
Very fun pop album. Like A Prayer is one of the best pop songs of all time, and definitely outshines the rest of this album, but I appreciate the experimentation that you typically don't see in pop music.
Obviously iconic. Four stars for Like a Prayer alone. I don't know that I'd have this whole album on repeat, but it made me want to listen to more Madonna.
Obviously love Madonna for what she’s done - the pop music version of Barbie (plus sex and drugs but who doesn’t love that?). Good to do a deep dive into her albums though, wouldn’t have put this on myself but ended up knowing half the words to half the songs ha
Much better than I expected. This was the Madonna I remember from college.
Það vantar greinilega alla Madonnunostalgíu á Spotify eins allumlykjandi og hún var hér einu sinni. Sumt er solid pop (titilagið, Cherish, Keep it together) og annað óvenjulegra en líka flott (Till death do us part, Dear Jessie).
Mycket fint. Favorit: Keep it together
Shockingly not what I expected based off of that first song, good listen
It's the best Madonna album on the list until now. Maybe it's too obvious, but it's her masterpiece, and everything after sounds just like an attempt to be as good as this one.
Mycket bra
Excellent of its type
Everyone knows the lead tracks on this but after getting through those I found the rest really listenable and interesting
Enjoyed this more than I thought. Very varied array of pop tracks. Didn't like the Prince-ish Love Song.
Surprisingly strong pop album, I expected a little bit of melancholy based on description, which I don't think would have been nearly as good as this.
Ça POP dans mes oreilles
Madonna has a certain cheesiness that has to be glanced over to enjoy. Here, the vocals fit the production with complete technical professionalism. At the same time, sound and symbol are invited to serious ground. The ballads more than anything else place like a prayer in that peculiar pre-90s. Biases there aside, it remains pretty great.
Starts off great, obviously a hit, great melody
Mondo memories of the '90s.
Couple of absolute tunes but wanst as consistent as I wanted
When I eventually found the right version of the album, that was super fun. Cherish & Express Yourself are pop bangers (I feel I've heard Like a Prayer slightly too many times). The songs I didn't know were mostly funky, last one batshit and the ballads pitched dispersed right.
I enjoyed it, would listen again. Songs that stood out to me, Like a Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Oh Father, Keep it together, Pray for spanish eyes,
Great pop album with a few duffers - sadly the two Prince tracks in that. First time I've listened to this and plenty to recommend it but ultimately not perfect pop.
Madonna seems to be a bit of a controversial figure these days with how much she has changed her appearance. Personally, I think she’s pretty punk. She knows how she wants to look, and doesn’t really care what other people think about it. I think that’s pretty admirable. Songs I already knew: Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish Favourites: Cherish, Till Death Do Us Part This was a really fun album! With it being Madonna, I was wondering if I’d actually know most of the songs once I listened, but I surprisingly didn’t. That being said, even the unfamiliar songs were generally enjoyable. There were a few songs that did feel a little weaker, but certainly no songs that I’d consider to be bad. Overall, this is very enjoyable 80’s pop music, and I’d recommend this album to anybody that enjoys a bit of cheesy pop.
Great Album
This was really fun, and with a classic well known song
solid pop album through and through with one REALLY good song (Till Death Do Us Part)
Some great tracks here
would be more of a 3.5 but it's just such a fun time
Nice
Listened on 3/20/23 3.5/5 Favorite song: like a prayer Madonna is an icon and so is this album
Damn no wonder she is so popular
okay ngl this is actually REALLY good like the number of times i went "oh it's THIS song!" was ridiculous, bunch of huge hits with that signature 80s madonna feel to it. very solid!
Wow, having been sour on Madonna for a while this was a really enjoyable surprise. I had no idea that Prince was involved (in at least 4 songs by my count) with this one, and no idea he played guitar on the title track! Generally a very solid album with some stellar moments. Great find.
Pleasantly surprised by this one. I've only heard Madonna's hits, but I found myself tapping my toes to pretty much every song. And Like a Prayer (song) is likely her best song. It's complex, catchy, perfectly written and executed. About as perfect of a pop song as you can get. That song alone is worth 2 stars, then add Express Yourself, Love Song (with Prince!) you get an easy 4 star album. It's a bit dated with the sampled instruments, which keeps it from being a 5 star to me, but I'll definitely spin this one again.
Not my thing but a few classics on there. The rest seems solid if you like the type of music.
Three of the four indelible tracks (namely ‘Like A Prayer’, ‘Cherish’ and ‘Express Yourself’) all appear on the Immaculate collection in superior forms. The other one, the fantastical ‘Dear Jessie’ is a must listen here. The rest of it is serviceable filler some a bit weaker (‘Promise to Try’ and the also the Prince duet dissapointingly).
Title track is a certified banger but I feel like the rest just can’t live up to it. Still, some solid pop.
Very solid pop with some funky influences!
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Like a prayer, Express yourself, Till death do us part
Some great songs and some very forgettable ones like Love song and whatever the last song was. I loved the 80s pop sound - like a Michael Jackson. Low 4 for me.
Good but I like her later work more.
I'm not a fan of Madonna in general, but this album is a classic. Imo, it's simply Madonna's most genuine album.
There is a reason why Madonna has remained a music and cultural icon to this day. She's great at what she does. These songs are memorable, they stand the test of time, and they're just plain good. Classic pop songs that have Madonna's signature edge and boldness means that they're never going to get old. Standout tracks have to be the iconic singles of Express Yourself, Like a Prayer, and Cherish, but the record as a whole is enjoyable.
When Madonna sings “let the choir sing” and then the choir sings…chef’s kiss
I like Madonna
Fun pop stuff, lots of classics.
'Like a Prayer', title song e capolavoro, diciamolo. No dai 4 stelle meritate.
Nice, funky percussion, upbeat, good tonal balance, fun listen.
Very solid pop album with a lot of gospel music influences.
Now this is a prayer I can get behind
Never actively listened to madonna. Really nice pop - 4 stars
I was 100% predisposed to love everything about this album just by knowing “Like A Prayer” and “Express Yourself” are here. And… yeah! It took me a little bit to process but by the 2nd time “Oh Father” came around I was sold. The religious tone of the album threw me off, not gonna lie, and at this point in my life I’m not necessarily searching for the kind of sound “Like a Prayer” offers, but I was ultimately won over by how personal Madonna gets in these songs. Instead of evoking her more (sexually) provocative side, Madonna reflects on bittersweet, violent relationships in “Till Death Do Us Part”, sings to an abusive dad in “Oh Father”, asks us to not settle in “Express Yourself” and makes her best case to get into heaven in “Act of Contrition”. This is the Madonna I want to remember, one who was brilliant at combining sound with substance to create memorable performances.
Several songs i really liked and recognized, and also some really weird ones.
This is basically as good as Michael Jackson's Thriller. The singles are pop classics.
Madonna's voice has never been the main attraction but the top tier production on the album brings out the best of it. The singles are all massive songs. Pop perfection. The rest of the album is a mix of solid synth pop and softer ballads. All in all its a great collection at an important junction in Madonna's career.
Classic 80s vibe
Another Madonna record that was incredibly consistent. Once again, I feel bad for having previously dismissed her as a singles artist, this and Ray of Light were both top notch pop albums
4.5/5. It is really amazing.
Classic Queen of Pop
8/10
A good Madonna album. A little more subdued than I was expecting, but I liked that. 'Like a Prayer,' is obviously a banger of a song, but virtually everything was upbeat and catchy. It never really hit the highs that the titular song set, but I'm not sure it needed to. Not my favorite Madonna album, but definitely a quality one.
La reina del pop. Un megahit. Un 4.
catchy! lotta bangers.
Fun and dancey. I came to this not quite realising the roots or spread of Madonna's popularity. Now what I know. This is great.
Was not exactly a fan as a teenager, given my predeliction for hard and heavy music, but listening to it in full for the first time I was suprised how many songs I did know, and just the quality of the "pop".
There are some tracks I don’t care for and the production is tinny in spots but generally a good effort from Madonna. I like the funkier songs, the Prince appearance, and the lyrical depth of certain songs. 7/10
I imagine Gaga listened to this a lot before her debut.
iconic.
This is exactly the kind of album I looked forward to hearing when beginning this project. Something that I know all the hits to but have never listened to the full album. This was great and it was fun to take in the whole thing.
Oh well... Madonna. Guess it would be ridiculous not to include at least *one* of her albums in this list given her impact on popular culture, and after checking out most of her records, it seems to me that *Like A Prayer* is the best choice, because it's maybe the only album of hers which is not invaded by an overlong string of clunkers that have aged poorly, apart from the obvious timeless hits. Here it needs to be pointed out that her records from the nineties and naughts surprisingly sound *even more dated* today than the ones from the eighties, if not more. But to be honest, it's an overall problem in her discography. Madonna was so bent on commercial success that her instincts (and producers) always led her to favor styles that would go out of fashion in a year or two--if they were not already dated by the time the record came out. So when the songwriting was not top-notch (and it wasn't in many cases), the whole thing sounded ludicrous to listeners with less blatantly commercial tastes. And this even back then. To be honest, I first expected *Like A Prayer* to be pestered by that same sort of problem given my knowledge of the second and third singles, "Express Yourself" and "Cherish". The first one is still bearable in an eighties nostalgic kind of way, but the second just sounds plain cheesy to me. But the thing is, those two singles are actually among the less compelling cuts in this album, and most of everything else is surprisingly very good. Of course, there's the title track opening this record. Everybody knows it, so I don't need to describe in details its gorgeous gospel arrangements, off-kilter chord changes, unnexpected rhythm drops and overall soulfull atmosphere. It's one of those timeless hits Madonna will always be remembered for. About the other good stuff now: The sensual duet with Prince, "Love Song", provides the kind of kinky kicks you can expect from the association of those two household names. It croons and moans and writhes just the right way. "Till Death Do Us Part" is a lively and catchy mid-tempo song displaying one of the rare instances Madonna could do rockier stuff without sounding too insincere or overaffected. Its lyrics are also an uncompromising take on domestic psychological abuse, which doesn't hurt. "Promise To Try" is a touching ballad, unpretentious but still effective. Its minimalistic piano-driven struture makes sure it can stay fresh after all these years. Compared to it, the strings-laden baroque pop chops of "Dear Jessie" are nothing short of astonishing: the music sounds like the love child of *Around the World In A day*-era Prince and Kate Bush. Sorry for the horrid mental picture I'm suggesting here, but believe me, musically it still works out very well. The next track, "Oh Daddy", is probably the centerpiece of the record, and certainly its emotional heart. It's all in the title. Heavy strings support a very personal song where Louise Ciccone settles scores with her father, and if you feel like someone eavesdropping on something you shouldn't hear while listening to it, the heartrending arrangements, the irresistible chorus, and the somewhat cold, detached way Madonna sings the latter make for a fascinating listen. After this feat, the bland pop-dance number "Keep It Together" is underwhelming to say the least, but the record fortunately ends on another high note, the acoustic-guitar and latin-trumpet-driven torch song "Pray for Spanish Eyes" ("Act Of Contrition" after it is nothing but a goofy experimental bonus track for me--so experimental that you feel like you're listening to Sonic Youth's parody album *Ciccone Youth* instead). So that's it: 10 real songs. Two clunkers and one half-clunker against seven keepers, including one timeless hit. Of course, only *one* timeless hit may sound a little stingy compared to the usual three you could find on *Madonna*, *Like A Virgin* and *True Blue*, to just mention her eighties albums. I suggest owning a compilation if you really enjoy those more famous songs (like *The Immaculate Collection* or the most complete *Celebration*) and just forget about those LPs. Unless you're a huge fan, or obsessed with eighties' cheesy sounds, they're not really worth it. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 840 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 87 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 39 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 33
At the time I thought it was the best Madonna album, but now it sounds a bit flat and some of the songs appear to be pretty weak.. probably the first Madonna album that had some 3* singles.. Still, it contains some classic Madonna / Leonard singles (the first two songs are obviously 5*) and most of the songs are 4*. So 4 stars seems to be about right (but I would not have included it on the list..).
I came of age with 90s era Madonna and my first “album” of hers was The Immaculate Collection, her first greatest hits compilation. So to me, she’s one of those “just the hits” kind of artists. And let’s be honest here, her hits are huge, they totally slap, and all of them unlock core formative years memories for me. The remix of Express Yourself on the compilation album is so much better than this original version. When I got around to buying this album I remember feeling kind of let down by it in comparison. I forgot how much I liked Love Song, that collaboration with Prince is the best thing on this album to me now. They play off of each other in such a sexy way, I dig it.
Well. That was a shock
Just really good pop
Good enough to make me forgive her for playing hours late in Brisbane, not finishing until hours after public transport had stopped running, having to wait forever at Boondall (middle of nowhere location for the Brisbane Entertainment Centre) for a taxi, not getting back until something like 2:30am and having to get up and go to work a few hours later. She was really good, but still. Peak Madge, but also peak MTV.
Pretty friggin good pop
Being 8 when this came out the singles unsurprisingly surrounded me. I liked the title track of course. Less bothered by the others. Into the Groove is fabulous but not on this album, which I've never listened to before now. I was not aware of the Prince duet, which is a lovely little nugget to add to my library. The deleted track Supernatural is also going in. Exception on the singles, Dear Jessie I had completely forgotten existed and reminds me a lot of Erasure on The Circus. Nice.
I enjoyed listening to my first Madonna album front to back. The hits are great, and the B-sides are surprisingly interesting.
Lovely little time capsule. Other than her (brilliant) singles on this, the rest shows an unexpected diversity of styles. I really dig it.
Promise to try - quite a poignant and somber song amongst the woodland of the other up beat pop songs Revelation never heard love song with Prince Some good well known singles and lesser if you’re not a fan
Meer van genoten dan ik verwachtte
Apparently, I need to up my 4-game.
Liked it!
The title track is a mainline injection of pure late-80s nostalgia; neon socks and fake Wayfarers. The rest never hits those lofty heights, but it's enjoyable and slickly produced.
Based on music alone, this would be a 2 star record with some 3 star bangers, but the lyrics are so good and deeply personal. They touch on child abuse, toxic relationships, divorce, the AIDS epidemic, and struggles with faith. Madonna's reach was huge at this time, and her image was bigger than life. The vulnerability she shows on this album is to be commended. Few releases of this magnitude have this much to say.
4.25
Hmm, Madona's synth pop is alright but I liked the more synthy debut that she had. I find her anthems a bit weird in the sense that I am not really as gripped by for instance, like a Prayer that I feel I should be. It is a nice, groovy album, however, and overall an enjoyable listen I am between 3-4 but feeling generous.
Nice
This album was way more creative and unique than I expected it to be. I really enjoyed it and will probably listen to the second half again especially.
Cherish is the highlight here
A fantastic album, accented by contributors like Prince that just really took it over the top. Madonna at peak Madonna
Smooth, competent pop. The second half of the album is much better than the first.
January 26th 2022. Finally a Madonna album. :-) The best of this album IMO: - Like A Prayer - Express Yourself - Til Death Do Us Part - Keep It Together - Act of Contrition Makes me nostalgic and I wasn't even born when that album came out. What's interesting to me is how Madonna can sing well, but how her voice isn't beautiful. She hits the notes perfectly, but in no way is she one of the best singers of all-time. But she sure does how to make iconic pop. "Act of Contrition" is... something. Chaotic. A classic overall. 3.6/5
Mommy? Sorry....
Like everyone else, most of my experience with Madonna came from the radio or TV. I'd never heard any of her non-single music until I listened to this album. And ya know, it wasn't bad. I actually enjoyed it, and really likes "Oh Father". I didn't even skip the songs I've heard thousand of times. Didn't add, but would listen again (and maybe explore more).
Honestly this record had a lot going against it: the style of 80s production I dislike, and the fact that I'm not a super huge Madonna fan. Still, it eventually won me over, partly due to Price (whose fingerprints are all over this), and partly due to the introspective and personal songwriting. Favorite tracks: "Like a Prayer", "Till Death Do Us Part"
I remember as a young kid this got plenty of airplay. Reeks of Prince production on guitar, which is great. Didn’t mind it actually
You can certainly hear the prince influences and contributions, it makes it’s a stronger album imo Up until this album I had been a massive Madonna fan, her change if material/direction wasn’t in my musical taste at the time, now however I get what she was trying to achieve with this album. Ironically there are quite a few good singles on here that were never released and it’s a shame they weren’t as it would have shown the album off a lot more

I see warum die Leute das so hypen!
Nice throwback to the 80's with Prince influences.
Not my cup of Yerba mate but understand the time and place (and now) appeal. Pop queen.
Not much to say about this album, but it's pretty good. Starts off really strong, and while it slows down a bit after the first two songs, it's pretty consistent throughout 4/5
A gold plated classic. Probably better songwriting than True Blue, but not as familiar to me despite the run of hit singles in the middle.
Banger after banger
An excellent album - a true evolution from the early pop period showing the way to the radiant Ray of Light The title track, Love Song (feat. Prince), Cherish, Oh Father and Act of Contrition are really fabulous.
She embodied the 80s like no other female artist. She has edge, memorable lyrics, an amazing look, and just the whole package. Full-tilt entertainer. Albums like this and Faith by George Michael are in the uber-commercial category, but how can you criticize an artist that innovated and then gave the public exactly what they wanted. This album is hit after hit! You even have Prince on this thing!
A great piece of pop that has stood the test of time well.
