Reviews (page 7 of 8)

I don't get the point of it, like about 90% of hip hop albums...

Not 4 me

mmm no me convenció nada 4/10

I can appreciate how they were doing something different, countering the typical machismo and violence of rap lyrics with yo mamma jokes, but still not something I'd come back to

Not a huge early '90's hip hop fan, and there's better examples out there than this. That said, I can see the influence this had on other hip hop and rap artists that got big later in the decade.

OK. Glad to hear it, but i prefer hip-hop when beats progressed beyond just two turntables.

Musically I enjoyed it. Lyrically it started out ok but soon (very soon) it went drastically down hill. Only worth 2

These were a jolly old bunch! A counter to gangster rap apparently. It doesn't mean it was any good though. It was very samey like most of this genre.

I enjoyed some of the beats and some of the music but the words, no. 2

Too flippy

There was stuff in here I really enjoyed but every time I got into a groove there would be a very homophobic, transphobic, or misogynist lyric that would really bring it down.

Ya Mama's An Extra On The Simpsons 1001 Albums Generator 164 (11/18/2025) Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde is the debut album by hiphop collective The Pharcyde, who are known as the funny guys of 90's hiphop. Look, I'm no fuddy-duddy, but if I wanted to hear a bunch of dudes spitting Yo Mama jokes at each other for like 5 minutes, I'd go hang out by an elementary school playground. The Pharcyde are very talented, especially in the world of production (where this album really shines), but they consistently use their talents for bullshit. Nearly every song has either a really annoying verse or chorus (or both). The two biggest examples of this are the terrible prank call verse of 4 Better Or 4 Worse and the "um, excuse me" chorus of I'm That Type Of Nigga. Like, I think the point of the latter one was to sound like an annoying nagging woman and yeah it worked. Why would I want to listen to that? Especially as this repeated chorus. It's not all bad; Oh Shit is a perfect song and Passin' Me By is also amazing. No comment on either tune. Officer and Otha Fish are also both great and I love the old school feel of Return Of The B-Boy. It's also worth mentioning that the skits/interludes, which I normally dread on 90's hiphop albums, were actually largely pleasant, consisting of short, jazzy beats and normally just one verse or idea. Overall, Bizarre Ride is definitely bizarre and it's just not for me. It's definitely dumb, harmless fun and I really enjoyed parts of it, but I wish The Pharcyde knew when to stop themselves from doing something annoying. 2.5/5, rounded down to a 2. Favs: Oh Shit Officer Passin' Me By Least Fav (not including interludes/skits): 4 Better Or 4 Worse

Passin' Me By

Fun songs

An okay album but not really my style of music.

Having only ever heard Passing Me By and Running Away before, I was a bit surprised by Fatlip's horror rap on 4 Better 4 Worse! The fact that Soulflower stands out for its production leaves me thinking that the original tracks lack quality. Too much time spent on skits although they often have better beats than the tracks themselves. Some of their flow is pretty annoying too, with a lot of nonsense. Generally pretty average album in my view when viewed as a whole.

Entretenido, pero sin más.

there are good albums, there are bad albums, and there are annoying albums. you know how there are people you meet where they think they are clever and funny and they want everyone else to know how clever and funny they are… but they’re really not. that is the perfect encapsulation of this group. from the beginning, this album was insufferable.

Early 90s hip hop, not my jam

Certainly from it's time. Beats aren't bad, rhymes are decent, didn't really grab me though.

yeah idk

I'm breaking my own rules for the generator which is that I have to listen to the whole album end to end with no skips. I'm only 1/10th of the way through at this point and I've had to listen to so much hiphop from the early 90s already. I'm not saying there can only be some set amount of any genre but if the list is going to be curated over time there are so many albums on here with so much homophobic and misogynist content over dime-a-dozen beats. I'm not the values arbiter or tone police but I don't have the time or patience for it. TL:DR its mid for the era

Not my thing

Standard 90s rap. Great bars but I hate the skits.

got to give it to them, most old rap albums go for the homophobia instead of the transphobia. bonus points for innovation

Borderline one-star status.

Oh shit…this was shit

it’s just really boring. stereotypical nonsense with no real individuality. it’s a mish-mash of BLAH.

Interesting but I don’t know if it’s 100% my cup of tea.

Fun lyrics, not really my jam as far as hip hop style goes.

That classic 90's hip hop sound.

Seemed okay but didn't grab me in any direction.

Some good beats, good flow, solid production. The lyrical content had me cringing. It all just started blending together. As an album it would benefit from dropping some tracks to make a more consumable product. The ingredients are here, and I wanted to like it more.

I enjoyed some of the instrumentation like on the first interlude and some of the jazzier songs later on. Unfortunately there's not a lot of singing. I felt the rapping was a bit below average. There's effort, but I didn't really like it.

Not my style. Not bad for background listening, but didn't particularly enjoy

The beats on this are pretty incredible. Unfortunately the content has not aged well at all.

This is pretty tolerable if you don't pay attention to the lyrics. Unfortunately the lyrics generally are all hip hop music has going for it, so here we are.

It’s hip-hop; it’s over long; it has rubbish skits; its not terrible, but it’s not for me.

Not really a fan of this one. In terms of rap/hip hop, it's better than most, but nothing really worth returning to. 2/5

Sounds like Fresh Prince, but with lots of swearing.

Seems like a vulgar rip off of the Fresh Prince.

I was ready to love this, but then I did not.

Cheesy

There’s a tight production underneath the childish humour on display here. Unfortunately I’m not enough of a student to this genre to judge this as being anything other than asinine and a bit gross.

5 : nog een keer luisteren. Beetje rap , beauty boys met jazz

suffers with jump around esque early hip hop fatique

Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: 🎢🎨💚 Production: 🎧🙂👌 Music: 🎉🎵✨🤔😕😒 Rating: 🎢📉/5

Not a fan. Couldn’t finish it. 2 stars.

De La Soul made this album three years earlier and it was way better.

Not a fan of this kind of rap. Went on too long as well.

There was one or two decent songs there but didn't enjoy the style in general

I hated the first half and liked the second. I think it averages out to a 2. Oh Shit and it’s jigaboo time are very skippable. Passing Me By is the standout track for me.

Decent bars and instrumentals. Annoying skits. I’m beyond glad hip-hop has evolved since ‘92. Standout track is: “Pass Me By”

who are you? why are you calling my house? stop calling here.

Irritating. I’ve listened to some rap albums that have completely changed my perspective. This? Oh, shit no.

not for me

This is gonna be kinda short but I didn’t like this one. I found it to be quite boring and way too long for its quality. I mean it could’ve been worse but it could’ve been so much better. Really boring and way too long

If 17 year old me was into hip-hop this might"ve been a thing. 44 year old is even more unimpressed

Some of the beats are catchy but I'm not super into this album. The vocals are a bit dated.

I feel like there could have been the beginning to something good here, but it just fell short.

No es lo mío, gracias, pero no insistas.

Well I don’t know. It was different than what I had expected and I am somewhat at a loss of words. I feel like it was all over the place and I can’t totally pin point what was going on.

It has its moments, a few good songs here but some of it is trying to hard to be funny and fails. 2.5/5

Not exactly for me in terms of subject matter. The style was fine. Will not listen again.

Good toons and a good beat. Some amusing rhymes (Ya Mama) but mostly the lyrics resonate a standard hip-hop victimised persecution complex which I hate. Hadn't heard of them before but I assume they probably got gunned down somewhere a few years later

This had some good beats and pretty good vocals/rapping. It was super goofy too but by the end I was getting kinda sick of it.

okay. not my favorite.

Too old school hip hop for me

Uff, was ein anstrengendes Hip Hop Album. 2 Sterne

Wollte schön das aktuelle Album bei der Gartenarbeit hören. Hat mir den Abend versaut. Ganz knapp an 1 Stern vorbei. Drecksmusik mit Dreckstexten

Clever rhymes. Some catchy loops. I don't know if it really builds on what ATCQ and De La Soul have already released though. Overall: 4/10

Music’s alright. Hate the skits.

2/5. A fun album, with some questionable lyrics, it's a nice change of pace especially with the climate of rap during this time. To be fair, I would rather listen to Beastie Boys but it's nice to see more laid back energy in the Black community, a necessary feeling to get through life. It also has some Parliament-style ad-libs and backing vocals. I think the album can drag a little at times and I am not sure I want to revisit it honestly. I think the energy didn't keep me invested enough to vibe with it. Plus the rapping flow wasn't enough to save it from it being uninspired at times. Best Song: Passing Me By, 4 Better Or 4 Worse, Otha Fish

I wanted to like this but it wasn't for me.

1.8 That classic 90s hip hop that you question if it still holds up today. The beats are in general bad, the lyrics are in general bad (just shagging and smoking from what I can decipher), there really doesn't need to be 10+ of the same album appearing on this list. Just pick the best one.

The Pharcyde has such smooth flow and the kind of production that always holds my ear. The music is hard not to like. But the lyrics haven't aged as well as you might think they have — any sustained focus is going to give you an "Oh Shit" moment.

Well, it's something I wouldn't have encountered without this project. Some of the hooks and beats were fun. I liked the female rapper early in the album. 2.5

Not really for me but a fun vibe in parts. “Passin Me By” and “Otha Fish” are the highlights.

All a bit meh I'm afraid. There are some decent enough moments I suppose, but this didn't really do much for me.

Wow, they made the last Public Enemy album sound like a great hip hop album. This was not my cup of tea.

I would say possibly a 1.5. The language was understandable considering it was a rap/hip hop but the lyrics just didn’t seem to work or be decent in general

Eh. I had high hopes cause it was supposed to be an offset from gangsta rap but honestly it wasn't that good at all. I mean it was still better than like NWA but I will never listen to this again. Did not like. Bunch of stupid, pointless songs about getting high and banging chicks. Kinda sad that those two things are your highest priority in life. Also this suffers from the same thing most hip hop albums do in that it's just too long and has a bunch of songs that could 100% be cut and the album would not lose anything.

early 90's hip hop. I'm not a fan of the style-lot of samples (although they do a good job of mixing styles & not beating one into the ground), or some of lyrics (but I understand the expression & style).

3/10 - the cover reminded me of junkyards. The music not very enjoyable. There weren’t really any moments that stood out as particularly good and the skits were not funny or entertaining

Not bad for early hip-hop. Didn't read the lyrics except for Ya Mama just to evaluate how much the ya mama jokes have evolved. Not much. The glass titty line was funny in a dumb way, I liked it

Hiphop kollektiv, några helt ok låtar, för det mesta inte min grej

More a comment on this whole thing, starting to wonder if there are there really 1001 (everyone) must hear. I mean that many means a lot that seem to be more subjective than essential. Must hear to me means, Something representative from every genre, innovation, stands test of time etc are must hears and seem in practice a lower number than 1001, that this list seems to work better as a book to flick through than an actual experience.I haven’t gotten to 100 yet and have had many instances where I do not feel that I have benefited from actually hearing quiet a lot of them ( while accepting my own preferences and bias) and yes to me this album falls in the that category, maybe it’s irrelevant nature would place it in a 200 rap albums you must hear, I am not informed enough to say but surely not 1001 of all popular music since 1953. Wondering how far I will get with this now, need 1 of those never heard must hear again moments tomorrow.

I started listening to this one night with my daughters in the room and found myself moving to shut it off quickly. The sophomoric nature made me giggle at first as though I was back in junior high. But the more I listened (without my daughters around) the more that sophomoric humor wore on me. The rap and flow was a cool throwback but overall I would like to say I evolved from this and find so little relevance. I think history can probably let this one go…

I owned this on CD in the 90s and remember having it only for Passin' Me By. I had hoped when I listened to it this time I would have a wave of nostalgia and remember the other tracks or I would regret not actually listening to the rest of the album when I first bought. Sadly, there was no wave of nostalgia and I see why I only had it for the single track. The last 2 tracks were the most interesting on this album. "Pack The Pipe" was just fun and "Return of the B-Boy" was interesting to hear them do a throwback to way long ago of 5 years before this album was released. It really made me appreciate how much rap had changed in those 5 years. Anyway, I will keep "Passin' Me By" in the rotation and will let the rest pass me by.

Way too many songs. Too many. I would've accepted only 2.

Juvenile anarchists (anarchist juveniles) with a rich/unsophisticated repertoire of ‘your mama’ jokes. Passin’ Me By is not representative. Caveat emptor etc.

Simple rhyming schemes for the most part, was a struggle to listen to at first but became accustomed to the older rap style and it wasn’t too bad. I’d describe it as a fun rap album, not much being said in the grand scheme of things but a time was had listening to it. Otha fish and ya mama were definite favourites

I turned my ears to it but I found myself zoning out and not really listening, I’d do it the service of actively listening again, but then I realised music shouldn’t work like that, it should be attention grabbing at the very least. I won’t listen to it again, you can’t make me, so there. 2 stars, one for each of the song titles im not allowed to say out loud.

I understand that this walked so that alot of hip hop could run, but this barely dawdled to where it was going, if it was even going anywhere... It was just kind of heading in a vaguely correct direction. Large parts dont sound like tracks, just a bunch of drunk mates messing around in a studio, that extends beyond the skits. Early 90s LA Hip Hop has so much to offer, surprised this made the cut at all. Just glad to know there's another album Coyne definitely won't have finished. Useless slob

Musik gut und Texte so albern

It’s always fun to be enjoying the beat and the flow only to be hit full in the face with needless and horrifyingly vicious misogyny, transphobia, and child abuse claimed as ‘jokes’. Was an instant 5/5 until then. So much fucking yikes.

It's still one of my least favourite genres.

not great

Solid early 90s rap. Better than today’s rap. Just not my thing.

Really hate skits.

Dated rap album

Rap's a stretch for me normally. There are moments where this works, moments where it's just guys being dingbats with their buddies, which, eh. Otha Fish was my favorite.

The only thing that saved this from being a one star album is that I liked the rap/flow skill, I just didn't like what they did with it. The lyrics were off-putting from the start and there was nothing else there for me. 1.75/5

I thought this was just fine. I don't have much to say about this actually - it was ok but not really my thing I guess.

Bizare fucking album. He tried rhyming fluxure and structure. The fuck is fluxure. Painful god damn album to listen to. 2 stars

That was a very strange rap album, that's really all iIcan say about it. Passin' Me By is a jam though and it was in Aggressive Inline which was an elite PS2 game. Quinton's On The Way (Skit) did make me giggle though that was so ridiculous

What an insane album cover. Did not expect it to start out so jazzy. I do not like the call portion of 4 Better or 4 Worse. On the DL is solid and instrumentals remind me of One Love. Passin' Me By I recognize no clue where from though. Really enjoyed the instrumentals on this one but the lyrics kinda suck ass on a lot of these. Between a 2 and 3 and gonna range down.

Not my jam

I’ve heard of The Pharcyde before, but I’m completely unfamiliar with their music. For the most part, I’ve enjoyed the hip-hop albums on this list that I’ve reviewed, and based on the reviews for this album, I have pretty high hopes that I’ll enjoy it. Unfortunately, for the third time this week, my hopes for an album have been dashed. I really wanted to like this album, but I just didn’t like it much. Don’t get me wrong, the rapping is great, and I enjoyed the juvenile and crass lyrics, but I couldn’t get into the overall sound of the album. I think I really hated the way this album was mixed and engineered. The elements that I wanted to hear more prominently felt turned down, and certain parts of the beats and samples that I wanted to hear more of wound up being sparser. A lot of the songs felt like they dragged on for too long as well, which I’m assuming was only compounded by the fact that I didn’t like this album musically. I appreciate the talent of the The Pharcyde and the influence that this album had on hip-hop, but it’s just not for me.

Fun for a bit, always better than Gangsta Rap, but it becomes pretty darn boring after a while... 2** as I don't want to offend

Wanted to like it more. Not a fan of overly vulgar stuff.

My infant enjoyed the beats, but then the lyrics started and she showed her displeasure by yelling over the lyrics. 2/5 just for the beats

I like old-school hip hop but never really listened to The Pharcyde. Musically I enjoyed it but found it immature lyrically and not a patch on you counterparts like NWA, Beastie Boys and others.

An interesting album because I've always enjoy the US3 album HAND ON THE TORCH, and this album was already presenting that jazzy fresh hip hop sound a whole year before US3's album came out. Not sure how I missed this album back then. I'm don't generally enjoy skits on hip hop albums and it was the same with this one. But I did enjoy that this group has a wacky sense of humor that doesn't border on mean or cruel as other hip hop groups around this era. Having said all that, it is hip hop, and I really did not find any of the tracks compelling enough to add to my collection.

This made the Fresh Start May playlist but not for my sake

Interesting! Only heard good things about this but never listened. Great the first song has a trans panic verse, Jesus Christ. Say what you want about hip hop, the hardest part with this era is getting over the homophobia, which is never easy, it fucking sucks and I’m glad we’ve mostly gotten past this It’s fine, the songs are pretty catchy but then a real cringey edgy lyric happens and it’s embarrassing which is the worst emotion an album can elicit. 2

Not awful. But not good.

Transphobia in the very first song. Just fuck off

what a boring nineties hip hop

Either boring or weird

I couldn't get through this album and bailed a song or two before it ended. At first I thought it was me, but even my husband, who is a hip-hop head, found it as annoying as I did. Almost every song has the same boring beat. This reminds me of an electronic album, and not in a good way. And most of the lyrics are stupid and juvenile. A whole song about Yo mama jokes, really? Come on. It was cute for like a minute, and then it kept going. Also, deducting a star for the song/skit with the weird beeping noises. Was listening to this on a road trip and thought something was wrong with the car in the middle of the highway. Not cool. 2/5

"Shot him in the ass on the DOWN stroke 9x" This can't be hip hop.

Classic fun and funky …return of the b boy stood out for me…

They do sound like they’re having a nice time. Very yelly though.

Funky, simple and catchy beats... But not for me.

Musically this was interesting enough, with solid beats and a fun vibe. But I had a hard time with the lyrics, which I found to be crass and immature, without being particularly clever. Ultimately, there are better artists making music in this vein, so this one felt like a waste of time.

The only thing bizarre is that it made this list. Average rap with simple loops and grade school lyrics.

Oh god, they think this is clever, don't they? I mean, in terms of lyrical wordplay, it's not bad. But substantively, it's just so juvenile.

I don't really dig hiphop

Not bad but unfortunately not my cup of tea.

Very melodic

This is a notable release in the history of Hip Hop but I'm not sure it really holds up today as most than a 'pretty good' abum. There are are a significant amount of 90's Hop Hop albums that are better. Even decades ago, I didn't feel it stood up to them.

Yes there’s some famous songs and grooves on here but anything with transphobia/ violence etc. is not going to get higher than 2 stars from me

Didn't really grab me. Clear to see they were doing something a bit different from most rap in the early 90s but I didn't get into this

Got into it eventually, skipped a few as far too much going on

Passing me by is a classic, but the record does not hold up. Yikes.

A raucous ride, fun in small doses, sounds like stage music for the 90s show In Living Color. A better album came 3 years later: LabCabinCalifornia

Not my jam at all

No thanks. More rap - it's of no interest to me at all.

I’m not even remotely a student of Hip Hop, but can listen to it and enjoy it. I tend to prefer this style of Hip Hop. It was okay, not something I’d listen to regularly.

Was this done by that guy Jerry Larsen? He was always a bit off the rails. Those cow characterizations were wild. Especially the one with the wife cow saying she wasn't content, even though she was living in a house wearing pearls and had a martini in her, uh, hoof. Pearls, for pete's sake! On a cow! In a house! With a martini! This guy cracks me up. His music kinda sucks though. Doesn't match the comics *at all*.

Held up mostly by the strength of "Passin Me By," which is an unqualified banger, but also has 160 million more streams on Spotify than the next most listened to song on this album for good reason. The average track length not including skits and interludes (the less said about the skits, the better) is 4:38. Most of these songs are just way too long, too repetitive and have no memorable lines or hooks. I can see how people would be into the fun, loose vibe, but it didn't really click for me.

Naja nicht wirklich was ich höre.

Some good drums in there, but overall not my cup of tea.

Not a hip-hop listener but not terrible. Playful lyrics

Old school hip-hop, good mood, funny. Wahrscheinlich wegweisend aber nicht meins.

One full song is a big mom joke, and that pretty much sums up the vibe on this one. Honestly it's fine, it's very light and mostly fun 90's rap, which is a pretty big change of pace from the harder rap that was more popular at this time. It is a bit long though (57 minutes). It also sounds pretty dated and while it's a more or less humorous listen, I don't think there's much that's really going to stick with me or be required listening in the future. Favorite song: Passin' Me By Other: Oh Shit, Ya Mama, Otha Fish 1/3/24

Very outdated 1.5

Haven’t heard of this. Hip hop/rap from 1992. Not bad but not really in the mood for it this morning.

1. 4 better or uuorze - 0 2. oh zhit - 1.5 3. jigaboo time - 1 4. 4 better or uuorze - 1.5 5. im that type of nigga - 2.5 6. if i uuere the prezident - 0 7. zoul flouuer - 1 8. on the dl - 1 9. officer - 1.5 10. ya mama - 1 11. pazzin me by - 1.5 12. otha fizh - 0 13. quintonz - 0 14. pack the pipe - 0 15. return of the b boy - 0

Perfect soundtrack for the 14 year old male that enjoys lighting farts, playing Zelda on the SNES and watching scrambled porn on cable.. Dumb and dated.

I liked Soul Flower. That is all.

Some of the beats were good. The lyrics just felt dated.

Didn’t really enjoy this one. Seemed very generic.

I am not interested in this.

The music was great and catchy, they can rap, but the lyrics were so, so bad. It was as if they were written by a 12 year old with issues. This should have been my thing and I don’t mind a bit of cheek but this took it too far and I dropped from what would have been a 3 or 4 to a 2 based on that alone. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Passin’ Me By Rating: 2 :(

Not my style. With that said great beats and intense energy really propel this album.

Gimmicky

Didn’t finish the album and I enjoyed some of what I heard. Difficult to rate but as I probably would never revisit I’m going to give it a low 2*

Well this is certainly early 90s hip-hop. A healthy mix of flow with a cup of profanity and a splash of suggestive behavior. Didn’t do enough to distinguish itself from the rest of the era for me.

Bought this on release and loved it but aged badly.

Some interesting musical motifs, but a bit juvenile for me 2/5

Every beat seemed exactly the same, just a constant rap over the same drum pattern. Yes, the old bit of levity and the odd hook but mainly just a tedious reboot of the last song.

Well - I didn't hate it. Expect when they had vocals. Then I hated it.

Not really for me

Do you have a child's mind. Boy do I have an album for you!

Je tapote du pied et regarde ma montre

This was okay. Not up there with the other rap albums that were coming out at the time though.

This was kind of fun at points but mostly just annoying

I quite enjoyed the humour on this, along with the samples. That was a decent jazz vibe to some of the tracks. I found it hard to locate any reference points. This sounds like a unique album. Unfortunately it's also far too long. Plus some of the lyrics haven't aged well.

A bit better than I thought it would be!

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: It’s decent but not my kind of thing Favourite song: Track 8 - On the DL

Jeg er i virkeligheden nok mere til hiphop-singler end hele albums!

Like the piano and acoustic drum kit. Totally recognize some tracks. Has moments that I can groove with, but just isn't speaking to me.

Sometimes you hear an album that makes you feel it's like something you like but you just don't vibe with it, this is one of those for me. It reminded me of a parody NWA album, why wouldn't I just listen to NWA and enjoy myself.

Different. Better than grand Master flash? Maybe

Pretty bad 2

Lord of bits that have been sampled in future songs and undoubtedly influential. But wow we’ve come a long way in lyrics…

It was alright, but I don’t really like it when albums try to be comedic, since I feel like they usually fail.

For rap....it wasn't bad....

Jazzy and funky, but a bit too aggro for my taste

okay rap sound. Not my favorite genre.

Tää ei kyl erityisemmin sytyttänyt. Kävi äkkiä tylsäksi 2/5

Eh ei ihan tää kolmikymppinen puoliläppä-räbä ihan iske. 2/5

I can't deny that I like a lot of the backing instrumentals in this album, but the lyrics for the most part were truly terrible! I can get why people like this but it's not for me

It was a bizarre ride. I liked it but it also was sillly innwqys thatbdo not hold up and can be grating. Glad to hear it but it is not a classic.

not great yo momma an extra on the simpsons

Silly, but kinda fun I guess? Living in the fresh Prince of belair land. A bunch of mates got together and made some silly tunes and words, kudos to you. Some tracks particularly silly and I liked that, everything's ok! But not ok enough that I feel the need to listen again

I like some Pharcyde but this didn't hit the spot

MOR American Hip-hop

Passed me by.

whatalovelydayontheinternetdog.jpg

This is so weird and at times very silly. And it doesn't help that I'm not that much into hip-hop. I have to admit that it grew a lot on me because at first I wanted to completely disregard it (especially after the unnecessary gore parts of 4 Better Or 4 Worse). There are two tracks that I really enjoyed - in big part due to exceptional instrumentals: On the DL, Passin' me By - and I'll definitely be coming back to those. Ya Mama gave me a chuckle too. All in all I guess this must have been interesting back in the day but for someone completely outside of the genre it's just a weird record with annoying lyrics and at times great instrumentals. 2.5/5

I might've liked this in highschool, but even though the beats were really good in places, the humour got tiresome

Not a rap fan

Nope, not for me.

It's entertaining enough but I keep feeling I'm missing what made these early 90s rap albums transcendent.

This is fine... I like that it doesn't take itself too seriously, but it does feel a bit lightweight. I don't see what makes this stand out as particularly memorable, if it was the first of its kind (which surely it wasn't in 1992?) then maybe you could class it as innovative, but I don't think it particularly stands out. Beginning of the album sounds like the kind of rap that a GTA character would make. The guy's got a good flow though, shame he didn't make more interesting music. 2/5.

Hip hop. Coñazo.

It was just ok Maybe a 3/5 or a 2/5

It was fine, as far as hip hop goes, just not something that I enjoy very much. I liked the Oh Shit song. 2 stars.

Lyrically ehh. The music behind the lyrics is ok. Pretty basic, very background music sort of jazz vibe. I don't think it holds up to a lot of the rap that came after in the 90s/00s. I prefer Arrested Developments release in the same year which holds up much better.

Good instrumentals, but rapping too shouty.

can't believe there was a yo mama joke there

I just couldn't get into this album or artist. The beats were good but the lyrics and themes are dated and hard to understand.

Just weird.

Bad streak here.

Loved the beats, but the sophomoric subject matter and lyrical approach let me down. Passing Me By is a standout.

Slurpees rhymes with herpes. The music was fine and they seemed to be having fun but I was cringing at a lot of lyrics so I didn't have a good time.

Wasn't a big fan of this. I liked a couple of songs, but the lyrics were pretty distasteful at times which put me off.

They parched the lyrics department dry for all the N bombs and dick jokes. Only saving grace was just catchy beats, but was a struggle to listen to. I expect better from Gary Larson

This is the debut album from the hip-hop group The Pharcyde. It is a classic hip-hop album because it was released early on during the Gangsta rap era, however it was a playful, alternative form of hip-hop at the time. The album has been certified gold in the US. The comedic lyrics, friendly banter, self-deprecating humor - both low and high - and wild tales, all apparent in these songs makes for a great album by a funny group of guys that can actually rap. This is now a nostalgic album from the golden days of rap, but the music still holds up. My only gripe is that I'm more of a fan of modern day rap.

Felt too dated and “90’s”.. And not in a good way.

Not my thing, better than Kanye, but I gave it a 2 because I'll never listen to it again.

Eh. There were times it was okay, and there were times I was wondering what the hell I was listening to. '4 Better of 4 Worse' is complete garbage. Being weird and gross doesn't make for interesting listening. Really wanted this to be over unfortunately.

Really good at the beginning but got overlong and the beats got repetitive

Decent album, enjoy the skits. Beats are solid.

Didn't care for this one. Doesn't really stand the test of time.

Bizarre

Well, I liked it a little better than Straight Outta Compton. Enjoyed the good beats but didn't quite hit home for me. Cool early hip-hop record though.

The jazzy influences and the fact that this album came out squarely during the gangsta rap era probably made this album stand out at the time. It was a decent listen; there were some songs in here that I found particularly catchy. I think personal enjoyment for me would come in at around a 2.5.

Ok, 2/5

Doesn't hurt my ears, but boring.

There's a comedy vagina on the cover. Adjust your expectations accordingly.

Promising to start with, but overlong and occasionally horribly misogynistic in a "hey I'm playing a character" way, which seems even worse.

Very much early 90s rap. The first half of the album is bad. I could tell these guys had good flow in the verses but the content was so offputting that I already made my mind up that this is getting a 1. Lots of references to sexual assault, misogyny, yo mama jokes, and just juvenile vulgarity. I have no problem with swearing, but not like this. The back half of the album is an improvement, Officer and Pass Me By are both pretty good. They'll get an extra point for those tunes but without them this would be a 1 and I still have no desire to hear it ever again.

Partially listened. Here's my vote against "three words constitute a song's worth of lyrics" in general, and especially when one of those lyrics is sh#t.

Probably not something I would choose to listen to but it's funky!

Fun album - not my type of jam, thou - but can’t deny these guys know how to enjoy themselves. Although I do not think I’ll listen to these songs again, I get why this is on the list and the influence on things yet to come.

Amusing in parts but hugely repetitive and generic.

Fun hip hop with some well put together beats and rhymes - less of the skits though

Not my jam

A little weird for me

Not bad but not for me

I liked the samples and the upbeat vibe, their willingness to just be loose and have fun. Disliked the basic themes, and the mysogeny, transphobia, homophobia, etc. Probably won't come back to this much.

I thought the themes were pretty dumb, honestly. Sounded fine but ehhhh.

As far as beats go, it hits the usual notes of early 90's beats. It's got a hint of the old 80's with something new, and it almost always sounds great. For the lyrics, they flow super well, but the stuff the group raps about sometimes just isn't worth listening to. Half the album is carried by the beats, but the other half has pretty profound lyrics and well-told stories. Favorite track: Passin' Me By

Early rap music was not that bad. Regarding jazzy rap, US3 debut album was much better.

Not for me. I don't understand the significance either.

This is shitter than beer

Not to bad.

Competent rap album. Hasn't aged well though.

Was never able to connect to the genre

Will Smiff

Oh shit.

Not for me

Never heard of this. Never want to hear of this again. Bang average hip hop 2/5

Not my jam

A little too energetic and playful for a guy with a case of the Mondays. But its fun and clever and feels a little elevated compared to 90s gangster rap.

Ei herätä suuria tunteita. Perusräppiä pienillä sekoiluelementeillä. Peruskakkonen kuten suurimmalle osalle saman genren levyjä.

I like the catchy background beats, but I generally don't care for rap, especially with crude lyrics like this.

This was a fun listen, though after a while you do get the impression that it's all trying a bit too hard, like forced fun.

Vibemuziek, maar pakt me verder niet. Als het op staat op de achtergrond zou ik het nice vinden maar zou het zelf nooit op zetten.

Would make good background noise if I was focusing on something else, but not really an album I'd want to focus on listening to.

Boring

I'm tired of writing the same thing over and over. Hip-hop isn't music. 1/5

Jazzy hip hop with okay beats. I'm not super into hip hop, but this was at least somewhat listenable to me. It was better than "The Chronic" by Dr. Dre.

Hate it

Not for me.

Not my thing. I turned it off at track 4 or 5 with the horror lyrics. I'm sure there is historical context to this album. I'll read about it some day. Doesn't stand on its own.

1 - TERRIBLE

I just find it annoying, I'm sorry

Alternative Hip-Hop / Jazz Rap - for me these represent the four horsemen of the apocalypse as far as musical genres are concerned. Supposedly, sevral of the tracks are comedic, but I didn't find them funny. Boring.

Meh, the usual for the hip hop/rap category, adult male teenagers with all their acid disdain for the world and giant egos. No thanks.

Oh shit, so much shit.

Another one that was tough to get thru. Please make it stop. I just want to listen to good music!

Not my thing

Hoped for a fun album but instead found it to be a little too sexually graphic for my preference.

Konnte ich nichts mit anfangen. Fands insgesamt einfach langweilig.

It’s shit

Yeah... well the good things in this album were some of the samples and the music. The rapping was not that great in my opinion and the lyrics seemed like they were written by young teenager who has just discovered pornography. This wasn for me and I honestly can't understand why the lyrics were what they were.

No thanks. Not my thing

I put up with 4 or 5 songs and had to change to planet rock.

Sólo mirando el nombre y la portada sé que esto es insoportable. Efectivamente. No tan insoportable como esperaba, pero lo es.

The energy is great, but the lyrics are too graphic for me to listen to more than a couple tracks. No rating.

Too many hip hop albums here and most of them are flat and unamusing. Like this one. Skipped through tracks and happy it's over

Transphobia in the first full length song. 🤮

not my genre

Nope. Dumb lyrics and not all that musically interesting. Probably would have hit different if I heard it first as a high school kid.

Okay, I think we've been down this road before, though I would offer this, there is not the blatantly offensive attempt, in the name of being "real".

Not for me, 90's rap and hip hop is just drab to listen to in my opinion.

Rap, not music.

I’m well over 600 albums deep into this list, and have managed to find joy in some strange and surprising places, from all sorts of genres that are alien to me. But I now know enough to understand that I just won’t find any in this corner of the musical planet. I’ve really tried. And I do keep listening to all of the albums. At least this was less angry. Whilst I didn’t delve into the lyrics, I didn’t sense anything that was inciting hatred either. Which is a positive. This just seemed to go on and on without changing gear. Nothing creative or inspiring. Guess I’m destined to never get it.

Rap...

Hip Hop. Noperino! 1/5

It's a style of hip hop, vocal delivery and overall attitude that does precious little for me. I tried; really, I did, but I couldn't make it all the way through. Genuinely think I'd rather listen to any of the country albums I've had so far. Some of the beats were half decent at least, even if a bit unvaried, and I recognise this is most likely a "me" issue with the genre as a whole just not resonating with me.

Not good.

Another day and yet another shit hip hop album. Is there no end to these? 1/5 6/10/25
