Reviews (page 8 of 10)
Maps is a good one. Otherwise pretty standard dancy punk stuff. Kinda reminds me of Elastica.
Not bad, found it a bit bland at times.
Good early 2000s indie rock. It sounds indie at least. ”Maps” is a great track
This album has a cool grungy punk sound so I would have expected to enjoy it more. However there was something missing to really elevate it. Not a bad album, but not great either. Highlights: Maps Pin Black Tongue
I remember "date with the night" was played a lot when it was released. Maps I knew too and is the better track. I didn't mind the rest of it but can't say it did much for me. She has a good voice for this type of music Not bad, not great
This is a band that I should like based off of my taste, but I’ve just never clicked with any of their songs. I know “Maps” is considered a classic, but it’s just alright to me.
The Yeah Yeah Yeah's debut was my second album from them in my challenge, the other one was The Blitz! which I liked better than 'Fever to Tell'. This album is garage rock, art punk but often a bit too deranged and chaotic. I prefer more artsy or far-out songs, like for example the closing song, 'Modern Romance'. Overall not a bad record but it isn't that record that I will often replay.
Not as good as I remember. I'm now too uncool to listen to this album.
I remember this album from when it came out, now more than 20 years ago. It still sounds pretty good, though I probably haven’t listened to it in 10 years prior to this. “Maps” and “Modern Romance” are my favorites here.
not a big indie rock guy but i can see it's good.
Molto Figo!
Good album. I like this style of music and enjoyed the vocals.
Average in my opinion. Liked the instrumentals but not the vocals.
This was a fun post-punk, post-grunge, indie album. Love Karen O's voice, and the drums sounded great. Listened to it during a workout, fit perfectly.
The front half of the album struggled a bit, but Maps and Y Control are great.
Angular shouty Punks vibes from the New York outfit....I don't totally love it but feel I should...maybe its the adoration from Pitchfork.
I give this album a 3.3 out of 5. It was a very solid album and I would definitely listen to it again. However, it isn't one that I'd go out of my way to listen to again. Still, very decent album and each song had great lyrics.
I wish i liked this more, but i don't
I've never listened to a full Yeah Yeah Yeahs album before, and I thought 'Fever To Tell' was okay. The instrumentation was really good, but I didn't think that most of the lyrics were all that great. I'm not really sure what sets this album apart from what The Strokes or Franz Ferdinand were putting out around the same time. "Black Tongue," "Maps," and "Y Control" were definitely the stand-outs on this album, but other than those, I don't think I'll give much of a thought to anything else that was on here.
Enjoyed listening to this one. Dynamic vocals. Cool guitars with some good riffs and inventive parts. No bass on most (all?) of the record, it gives it a unique thing that’s probably true to their live sound -but it would also probably sound good with bass too. 3
A bit too punk for my tastes, but still enjoyable - my top pick is 'Maps'.
Greit nok, men e ganske lei av Maps. Heldigvis va dei andre sangane litt bedre
In theory, I should love this thing. I just don’t connect with it. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Just not my thing. Certainly doesn’t hold a candle to Room on Fire (the best early aughts rock record). But “Date With The Night” will always rip, and “Maps” is god-tier indie rock. Wish the rest was as good as those two.
I think maybe the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are too cool for me to understand
Fav song: Maps
Expected more out of this tbh. Has some cool tracks, but the rest is just really forgettable, even if it doesnt necessarily sound bad.
Some interesting sounds but overall forgetsble
Really slams at parts but just irritating at others. Experiment with dub doesn't really pay off. Maps I'd still an indie rock classic though
3.5 Better than average. Enjoyable.
Quite fine
Oh fuck, 'Maps' is THAT SONG. The late 90's aggression takes the front seat on the first half of the album, but it develops in to the complexity and finesse of other bands later in the decade. An important album showing the creation and influence of the main indie phase of the 00's Warrants a relisten
Girl rock
indie rock band 3
Maps is the best song and just so different from the rest of the album.
I liked this at the time and it still has a fairly distinctive sound and some good songs, but hard to push higher than a 3 in the grand scheme of things
good stuff
My favorite Yeah Yeah Yeahs song is on Fever to Tell. I like the band and have listened to tracks from various albums. I've listened to this album at least once before, but haven't been back for a re-listen for 10 years or more. There are tracks with a little too much scream and scratch in the vocals, and some lyrics that I couldn't recommend to all listeners. I will keep looking forward to new releases from the band, and but this album may not get a full re-play from me in the future.
Quite a few good songs. This one goes down easy. Short punk-Style tracks, that have a Siouxsie and the Banshees feel. Standouts: Date With The Night, Pin, Maps, and Y Control. 3/5
Punky
It was good, didn't fully engage me but still, not bad
Vrolijke up-tempo rock-muziek. ***
okay okay okay
The main vocalist was awesome! They brought out a bunch of sounds I would never hear on a radio. Though, I was somewhat disappointed with the repetitive lyrics. It felt like there was a lot of opportunity for more depth.
An aggressive album will some interesting messages. Not going into the heavy rotation
More of a 3.5
Awesome energy, gets a bit weak at the end. Will definitely listen to some of their other stuff.
I’d probably go 3.5 on this. I liked it but for some reason does feel a little cheesy
ok. nice tunes but nothing ground breaking
indie rock band
Yeah Nah Yeah. OK. OK.
Not a relaxing listen, but plenty of good energy
Meh
I recognized the singles from this record but I am not sure if I ever heard the entire thing. It's got some great moments but too few ideas are reused too often. Overall this is a great album, but it's not as consistent as some of the other records on this list.
I preferred the second part of the album after the end of the track No no no no.
Really great project all around. Loved the vocals, the production matched each song's message/vibe perfectly, and overall just enjoyed listening to this thing. That being said, there wasn't a lot of songs that stood out to me, especially near the end of the album. This album's floor is really high, but it's ceiling is pretty low. Just good n fun punk, and there's nothing wrong with that
Spiky and still full of jams.
Het gekreun is wat minder. Latere nummers in het album zijn beter.
Can't believe this band has more than one album on the list. This album is far better than It's Blitz but still suffers from the same problem - you either think Karen O is a one person wrecking ball, or the wreck who turns up at karaoke and tries to sing blues songs as if they were punk. I fall into the latter camp.
just like something in 70's
Some good variety, but didn't click with me. Low 3
Never heard this band. Pretty grating stuff so far, not for a big reason. Not a big fan of the vocals, lyrics or instrumentation. second song is better than first. Lyrics are inane but not even in a punk/cool way. Songs will have good moments sometimes but will be ruined by something. Maps is an ok song but a complete shift from the rest. Not the worst but won't intentionally listen again - 3 stars
Need for speed menu music
I used to have beef with Karen O for some reason and called her PJ Harvey’s leftovers. That isn’t fair, since they have totally different goals, but I think I was bitter that the music group I followed were really into Yeah Yeah Yeahs but expressed minimal interest in Polly. Listening to this the whole way through, it’s not bad. It’s eclectic but not sporadic. I don’t really care for the 2K indie take on punk, but the Sonic Youth-esq disonance tracks are cool, and the dance stuff isn’t bad. Karen’s also a decent singer and the production is solid… but this isn’t usually my thing. C-, maybe drop the minus
Yeah this is fine. Don't really love it, don't really hate it. 2.5/5
Simply cool punk music, very nice vocals from the lead singer, I like this a lot. 3.5/5
3.25ish
I know this one! Not their best but still good.
Nogal chaotisch. Ik vond hun doorbraakalbum toch stukken beter
CD
man👍🏼 maps👍🏼 average highs but some low lows not my type of music but i can definitely see the appeal led zeppelin if they were a bit emo album cover is genuinely disgusting 6.3/10
Nice
Pretty solid album.
Lots of loud and in your face songs. Found the 2nd half better than the first
unexpected gem, edgy rock sound I enjoyed.
Hard to classify. There was some really forgettable stuff and some pretty cool stuff. Overall liked it. Likely wouldn't listen again. Prolly wouldn't turn it off it came on randomly.
Pretty enjoyable, but honestly "Maps" is the real star here. Not quite strong enough to be 4 stars, but I'd easily listen to this again.
Two albums on this list feels like it’s pushing it a bit. Maps is still the stand out.
A bit of a tell of when the book was released. Really? Good album though. Could do with pre-album release BANG on here
It's a fun if generic album, full of energy and trying to be catchy hooks
This was a fun listen, full of energetic, punchy rockers. Enjoyed it, but I'm unlikely to come back to it. Fave Songs: Y Control, Modern Romance, Maps, No No No, Date with the Night
Not bad, not literally the worst, I can see it passing the torch
3.5/5 it has potential, i'll have to relisten
A pleasant rock album - good vocals, solid tracks, lyrically interesting enough not to offend, short enough not to overstay its' welcome, does some interesting things with the sound - I had fun, in short, but it's nothing to write home about. or write anywhere at all, for that matter
Heads will roll, but not on this album. Pretty bland - didn't mind it, but I wasn't convinced.
Czasem głos artystki trochę wkurza, maps ok. Szkoda, że heads will roll to nie ten album.
High energy, some beats I really enjoyed, sometimes a bit too much, especially the voice.
A solid album front to back. Ended up being much heavier than I anticipated having really only known Maps going in.
Already listened to it
Reminds me a bit of one of my favourite bands, Dead Sara. Nice.
Overall it's good, but not enough to hook me in. Favourites: "Date With The Night", "Pin", "Maps"
Reminds me of a punkier, more abstract Screaming Females with a layer of slick, chimey production on top as was common in early-aughts indie. It does seem to me the album loses steam halfway through, especially as Karen O's vocals tend to wear thin. However, the sound and orchestration of the tracks are killer - if the band had varied things a little throughout the album's runtime this would easily be a 4-5 star LP.
Decent high-energy punk rock. A bit too in-your-face for me I think, but I could see how it ended up on this list. Also Maps is just one of the best songs ever made so that helps. 5/10
good rock n roll fun
Nice enough, I remember Maps being on Guitar Hero, or Rock Band or something. Nice listen.
I thought I'd enjoy this album but weirdly enough Karen O's voice starts to feel a bit samey from song to song. It is more the production style, with the compression, which feels like it's trying to disguise her jazzy singing style. But there are some great tracks on Fever To Tell, including the iconic "Maps" and the stellar opening number "Rich".
Rock punk de garagem \,,/,
I’m not the biggest fan of her voice or style of singing, but I enjoyed this overall. 3 stars.
punky, noisy, fierce, flighty
p894. 2003. 3 stars. Came cold to this one, didn't know anything about the band or the album. Well done garage rock, great voice, but nothing here that hasn't been been done before (and better) by Siouxsie, PJ Harvey, Garbage or Elastica. It's good, and I'd listen to it again, but not sure why it's on the list as it's neither innovative or anything special.
Middle of the road
it was fine
Not my favourite album from them, but some great tracks on it
Echt niet zo bijzonder. Punky garagesound.
Meh
Good fun didn't recognise many of the tracks - probably better live than as background music to work to, could have done with a bit less filler and more catchy tracks
Fever To Tell is a nice indie rock album. I like some other albums of Yeah Yeah Yeahs better. This is nothing shocking in quality or deliverance. Still it's good fun to listen to for a couple of times.
I remember thinking Yeah Yeah Yeah were style over substance at the time. A fringe in need of a song. That was unfair, as Pin and Maps are both timeless classics, both 5/5 songs. The rest of the album has some good songs (Rich, Date With the night) and some that must have gone some way to forming my original unfair opinion of them. It's sad, when they can write a thrashy fun cut like Pin, and genuine timeless heart breaker like Maps, that so much of the rest of the album feels so 'this'll do'. They clearly had more in the tank, as Heads Will Roll is a banger later on. But then they also had Gold Lion. Would that they got a producer who would tell them that a lot of their songs are unfinished.
Maps is a great song. Album with attitude, which perhaps wins out over the actual music.
The best of this album IMO: - Modern Romance 3.0/5
Might come back to it, only listened a couple songs
So, the New York garage rock/punk/post-punk revival, eh? I was 18 at the time, and as big as the movement was, it didn't appeal to me on the whole, despite my love of garage rock, punk and post-punk. This was partly an aversion to hype, partly that I found certain bands flat (I'm rather curious how I'd find The Strokes nowadays), and partly a nascent disdain for what I have come to recognise as record-collection rock (I don't believe I'm the first to use that; I think it owes its coinage to the music writer Simon Reynolds, but theft is pretty much the easiest crime to justify materially). I have previously reviewed The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' subsequent album It's Blitz, and found it acceptable enough, but also safe, timid and frustrating in its refusal to move from the middle. To this album's credit, it at least heads somewhere. But it also underscores my main issue with record-collection rock; often the album are corkers, but also redundant. Why listen to a band heavyhandedly alluding to PiL and The Germs when one can, you know, just listen to PiL and The Germs? This is an issue the album battles with, not wholly successfully. We see a significant variation of styles delivered in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' manner, but not every attempt works, and the album is quite uneven (does anyone need their foray in dub No No No? Not really not really not really. Also, note that post-punk groups had been tackling dub in a less contrived manner over 20 years earlier). The album improves as one gets towards the end. I can accept that many people really embrace Maps, and I've no inclination to disabuse people of that, even if it personally doesn't quite hit my G-spot. The closers Y Control and Modern Romance are probably my favourites, and the hidden track is fun as well. So a bottom-loaded album. But the main reason the last few tracks surpass the first half significantly is that Karen O drops the obnoxious wackiness and sings like a being with a human heart. Does that mean the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' central conceit, Karen O's stance as frontwoman, was misconceived at conception? Not quite, but ultimately, what we have is a talented band not quite sure what direction to pursue, so they try as many as possible somewhat cursorily. This is a better failing than It's Blitz' lack of any direction, but it's still a criticism.
Grew on me w additional listens!
It definitely has a sound that is very specific to its time. I could get into it with more listens, but I just don't have the attention span for it today. It's okay. It got better towards the end of the album.
I've been meaning to check out the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but haven't really gotten around to it. Decent post punk stuff.
83. Fever to Tell - Yeah Yeah Yeahs 12 tracks. This started off well (sort of punky electronic funk). but I don't like the "tinny" production sound. I quite like the nuts & bolts of it, (& it's obviously meant to sound "tinny"), but I don't understand why. 3/5
Not bad, but there are other neo-gargage bands that I prefer.
Wicked voice. Decent pop/rock stuff
Didnt have time
I was very much won over when I heard the opening lyric "I'm rich" purred by Karen O. I really enjoyed this track and her vocals. The rest just kind of made me feel on edge. I think it's a well-crafted album, but it's too much for me.
I have heard of the band, but I am not really familiar with their music, and this was my first listen for this album. I imagine that if I had been a fan when I was younger, then I would still be a fan and really be thrilled to have it come up on this list...but I was not, so it was just okay for me. I did love the tone and style of the the female lead vocals (and the very fact that the lead is female)! I also enjoyed the drive and bass line of many of the tunes. I just couldn't really embrace the fierceness of the punk/garage style. Maybe I am getting too old??
Je m'attendais à plus. Punk respectable mais sans plus.
3/5
Not really my thing.
Great in the beginning, then got pretty boring.
Favorite songs were Black Tongue and Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaps. Wait!
Their sound, bordering on garage-rock of the 1960s and on the new wave of the late 1970s, is the quintessence of sexual frustration and existential desperation. The singer proves to be one of the best shouters of her generation. (6/10) FT: Maps, Date with the Night
I love the sound and the energy but it was ok. Nothing really outstanding for me but a couple of good songs.
3, it was good if not memorable.
Vocals are a little grating, but I found myself enjoying this record. Favorite track is Black Tongue.
It was OK. A little like Juliette and Licks. I'd listen again, but my usual jam
not really my thing
Great modern post-punk. Tinny buzz saw guitars, messy drums and a singer who can go from screeching like a tom cat to breathy Debbie Harry style vocals. Best Tracks: Date With The Night; Pin; Maps
it was okay
Spikey - some good indie rock guitar. Mega phone vocals irritate after a while. I liked Pin and Maps. Just scraping a 3 out of 5.
Idk, I just don't really get them
Heavier than I remembered! Prefer their second album
Yeah Yeah Yeahs' debut album was a lot of fun to listen to! The garage rock and punk music genre is very entertaining, and the band was able to show the listener how much they enjoyed making this album.
Generally liked this and Maps is still a standout. A little bit too punk for when I listened, but I will go back. Now reminded to go back and listen to Karen O and Dangermouse, which I remember liking more than this
A damn fine album that I've enjoyed since it was released. Love the picture disc vinyl too. Lots of great songs here, Maps being the hilight. And Wendy O's voice...gorgeous. a strong 3 🌟 album knocking on the door of 4.
Not my cup of tea, but done.
Pretty solid but not my favorite. Wild how different / more melodic ‘Maps’ sounds in comparison to the rest of the albums but maybe I’m biased
Niet super fan
Maps is great.
Karen O channels a fire reminiscent of The Runaways. Fever To Tell runs top heavy and some of that side A flare depletes. But the vocal performance of O is what elevates straightforward hard rockin into a energetic disorienting record a cut different from fellow acts of the day. The track Maps, slows down and takes on an sensual tone and remains the most enigmatic feature on the LP.
Maps is a banger - the first half of the album lost me with the vox, too squeaky/obnoxious for my taste...exacerbated by the filter lofi effect.
It's fine. maps and y control are always bangers.
Wild and enjoyable
Quite fun garage rock fused with punk. Having listened to a fair bit of garage rock and a lot of punk, this didn't really seem like anything remarkable. I like the female vocalist's style. I would rather listen to The Reatards or the New Bomb Turks, or many others.
Favourite Songs: Pin & Maps
Somehow they make a striped back garage sound seems fat and juicy, this album still sounds great nearly 20 years on. Powerful drumming and great guitar hooks but it’s Karen O’s incredible vocals that really stand out. More importantly this album has some really great songs on it. The song sequencing irritates me and ruins the flow and overall impact of the album a little. But still a cracking wee album
not my thing
Great garage sound but find Karen O grating. I can see past it in parts and some great tracks
Not that bad!
.
It’s not really my favorite type of music and I didn’t like all of the vocals. I definitely thought the second half of the album was better than the first half. Maps is certainly the best song on the album. Other favorites include Y Control, No No No, and Modern Romance. Least favorites include Tick, and Cold Night. I’m glad I listened to it but I don’t see myself coming back to it all that much. Strong 6/10
Wasn't too keen to start but it grew on me.
Honestly I kinda already forgot what it was like to listen to in the last 8 hours. 5?
I was looking forward to this, as I really like "Maps," but the rest of the album didn't hit similarly. Reminded me a bit of Amanda Palmer.
I'm not sure why I didn't know that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer was a woman? I'm sure I've heard songs by them before, but I'm not sure what. Maybe one of them will come up on this album soon. Initial reaction is that this is good music for motivation days--when you're cleaning your house or working out. I don't love the high-pitched squeal thing she does, but I'm sure that's some of the appeal and like "classic Yeah Yeah Yeahs". This reminds me of something that Kat would listen to in 10 Things I Hate About You. Okay, here's where I come back around -- Maps is an excellent song. I wish more of their music were like this.
Overall I enjoyed it. I think the second half is a lot stronger. The song structure is much better in the second half. I felt the first half was really all over the place. Overall I enjoyed it
punk isn't something that i naturally gravitate towards and Im not sure why because I have a lot of natural anger; I just prefer "singing" and less heavy lead guitar; first heard "Maps" when Martin and I played rock band and that is more melodic so it was nice to hear that one again
Great - just great
pretty fun. always like yeah yeah yeahs
It is not my kind of music which I like. For me sounds like a part of punk.
Average 2000s punk pop
Ganz fresh. - 3
Crazy, Band musikalisch voll an mir vorbeigegangen scheinbar.
First song impressions - loud and raw and stripped-down. Reminds me of the White stripes/Black keys/Hives/Strokes era of rock music, and I like it. Punk as fuck 🤘 Track 3 kinda a mess. Track 4 a bit more melodic and funky, singer working herself into a frantic state by song’s end. Wait....they dont love you like I love you... now-ow-ow-now-ow-ow. Brings back fun Rock Band memories :)
A bit of a challenging listen, but unique, energetic, and has enough engaging tracks to make it worth spinning.
yeah, it was fine.
I liked it. More punky and sexy than I expected.
Lots of weird screeching but not bad overall. Never would have listened to this
not my cup of tea but giving it a 3 because the female rocker is dope and maps is such a good song
was alright
10 songs that aren't as good as maps. And maps.
Good indie rock. Heard some of them before
Pretty ahead of its time for 2003. Maps is obviously a big tune.
I actually enjoyed this album and recognize a couple of songs on it too. Listening to the album I got a feel that the album was more into a Nirvana grundge feel. It was good clean vocals and well versed so I enjoyed the lyrics more than the tune that was used.
6
Fairly heavy, great second track. Good for running. Slightly boring riffs at times
Halfway through the album and it's a spunky piece that perfectly fits the punk rock sphere. Doesn't much appeal to me. So far 2/5 After finishing the album I have a slightly better opinion. It's refreshing to hear a female rock voice. 3/5
Def not as good as the other one we had
Some catchy tunes on this one. Karen O's distinct vocals are key in making these indie/garage punk-y worth listening to.
A few nice melodic moments but overall to distorted and messy for my taste.
Great songs and energy. Love the vocal delivery, and guitars holding it all together. Not so sure about some of the lyrics.
okay
Good rock, good to hear female lead.
Cold light is okay, most is just garage rock without sounding cheap. Its okay but i don't know what makes it special. Wikipedia calls it dance mix with rock and that is a decent description. quite up tempo
Good album
I really like Karen O, but I kinda feel like she's a bit wasted in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This album has some bright spots, but overall, it's just okay. Best track: Maps
It was good, I personally thought most of the songs the girl was just screeching. Like the cardi B of punk rock. Still punk rock so music was fine.
07/07 Was okay
Always seemed like the most likely to sell out of the NY "garage rock" bands. Too bourgeois and "provocative" to really be believed as anything more than an art school project. But, Karen's ebullient, earnest performances live eventually won out over the initial schtick and it was hard not to pull for these 3.
This was unexpected. I remember the band being heralded as part of the return of rock n roll at the beginning of the millennium. I'm not sure I really understand that. I didn't think this was up to much. Maps is still a fantastic song but the rest maybe needs more time and I don't have it!
Yesterday, I had a 2004 album, and today, I time travel a year back to listen to an album that's basically only known for THAT song. Other than that, at least the singing is on point. Favorite Track: "Maps".
Nothing much toasty pretty generic although rock. All a bit meh
Ok 2/5
A little heavy and scream-y, but alright overall. Not something I think I would voluntarily listen too.
Some interesting moments on this, but they never really developed as I hoped they would. As a result, it’s all pretty beige and produced better elsewhere by the bands they are clearly influenced by. Nothing to see here really, unfortunately.
I feel i should like this album, but i just dont. Cant really pinpoint why, but it’s just not for me. Not bad enough for a 1/5 but i Will never listen to this again
Meh punk
Agreeable noise. Lots of screaming. 2
No no no's. Why you want to yell at me, angsty girl? If I had a teenage daughter, this seems like the kind of music I would angrily yell "Turn that shit down!" about through her bedroom door. Uninspired lyrics, music isn't great, but it does bring the angry teen girl vibe.
Maps is such a banger of a song and then the rest of the album drops :( It’s like hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby
Ok. I couldn’t get excited about this.
Meh meh mehs. Acknowledge some good stuff here though
Pretty standard garage rock revival. I don't really get the hype about Maps either
Clangy, tuneless 2000s-style punk. Needed something good after struggling through Giant Sand but no luck today. I reluctantly enjoyed 'Maps'
me esperaba otra cosa con esa portada
i wanted to like this but i find the karens vocals to be kind of annoying and the performances to be very lackluster. i like maps and y control i think theyre deserving of the praise they get but the rest of the album i cant really stand. 5/10 Favourite: Maps Least Favourite: Pin
This is the sort of music I find irritating. I can’t explain it. Its category is indie rock but that must encompass a lot of different styles as I like indie rock but this doesn’t grab me. It has new wave sensibilities in the style of singing, but I found the melodies and lyrics a little weak.
That woman cannot sing. Some good guitar in places but the vocal..please woman..
I fucking LOVE maps so I was psyched to finally listen to the full album that it originated from. Not great. Karen O has an awesome voice but I wish it was used on something more organized. I get this is punk but I’ve heard the band’s later albums and they can be quite good. Oh well!
I feel like one of these songs was vaguely familiar. Other than that, it missed the mark for me.
This album has one good song on it. Everything else is hot garbage. Sounds like they're trying to be Sonic Youth or The White Stripes, and failing utterly on both counts. (Although it helps you appreciate Meg White's drumming.) One SONG does not justify an ALBUM to listen to. But it's British, so it made this list.
Fiery, jangly, full of energy… but ultimately felt like be washed over w lots of noise that had little behind it
Estrogen laden post punk nobody needs, 2 points because "maps" was kinda good.
Really inferior to "It's Blitz".
Maps is cool. The singer has a nice voice but the constant squealing is kind of annoying
So THAT'S where that song comes from, ok. Yeah uhh this was kind of painful. They definitely get better over time. Karen is the best part and sometimes her singing isn't my favorite, but it's distinct and that's a good thing.
This is more my era in terms of peak music discovery age, but that being said, I never really liked the vibe of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Was never a fan of the vocals
4/10
It was okay. A lot of noise and they vibe of the songs never changed and they all sounded alike. Not a big fan.
Oh man. Hey this album has "Maps" on it! I'm sure this will be pretty decent. Narrator: It was not "pretty decent." Yeah I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. I find Karen O's vocals incredibly grating througout. Incredibly basic melodies. The guitar veers from nice jangly indie rock to strange over-the-top metal. The last three songs are actually pretty good, as they seem to tone down the wild spazz of the rest of the record. But it isn't quite enough to redeem it for me. As greaat as "Maps" is, I can only muster - TWO STARS
Dumb, occasionally fun, always disposable new wave-tinged dance-y pop light punkish indie music. Why anyone honestly feels that this is an album that anyone must hear from kicking the bucket is beyond me. One to avoid.
‘Maps’ was great. The rest not so great. Lyrically weak….it seems when they ran out of words they just filled gaps with repetitive non-words. Decent enough voice if you can get passed the all too regular annoying squeal.
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah duh duh. Not too great nothing that made me get up and groove. But they did have the WAIT THEY DONT LOVE ME LIKE I LOVE YOU
5/10 - I liked the back third the best. The front half was consistently punk, but the back half was more my style.
Normal pas plus!
Bof
1 good, few ok, rest meh. 2.2
Pas aimé le debut Mais they don’t love you like i love you WAIT 🖐🏼
Kinda cool bit couldnt listen to ehole album
4/10
Quite liked Maps but the rest of it was hard going.
I didn't like this album. I like the way the band grew over time but this effort was patchy. I liked "Maps"but not much else. Honestly, I was kind of glad when the album came to an end
I hope that I like tomorrow’s album better…didn’t care much for this one at all. Two stars.
This is a tough listen for me. The driving bass and drums are pretty cool, but the singer and the guitar on top of that were mostly irritating.
No no no, just not my kinda music and it all just blended into one for me.
Some of the chaotic vocals I was not a fan of but other songs were decent.
Alright I guess.
decent
D:
I recognized the song Maps and kind of liked it, the rest of it was pretty forgettable.
I found the vocals whiny and grating. Each song rolled into another without much variation.
Sure, the chorus to "Maps" is really good, but not much else here is particularly interesting or memorable, just a sub-standard garage rock revival album.
Really did not enjoy. "Maps" is the highlight by far, and that is really only a 6/10 song maybe. I liked the chord progression of Y Control and nothing else stuck out to me. Honestly pretty crappy and maybe if I was an NYC cool kid 20 years ago this would hit but I didn't care for it at all really. I've always thought the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had a lot of glazers for some not great music and the full album reinforces that.
Noisy and energetic, but not musically stimulating. Except for “Maps,” of course, which is the first non-distortion-laden track on the album and feels like a sentimental breath of air.
Very echoey and raspy. Favourite track: Man
I hear this album and I think of Scott Pilgrim vs The World. It's about sex, breakup, hookup, and more sex. I was in middle school when this album came out and it was explicitly banned for me to listen to by my parents. So I never really listened to it until now. It holds its genre of "art punk" with white knuckles and could be defined by the stereotype that goes along with it. All these years later, it's not for me. I would turn it down if someone gave it to me to listen to. 4/10
Obnoxiously noisy and not enjoyable. Would be way better as an instrumental.
It's really an art rock album with moments of brilliance like Black Tongue and Maps. This is a New York band through and through.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Nah Nah Nah.
I must have been completely checked out during this era of music because I have never heard any of this. I don't believe I was missing anything too important.
Alt for mye stønning for meg
No, no, no
Meh couldn’t finish it
Meh Meh Meh
Maps is the saving grace. Otherwise no. Mercifully short.
Eh other than Maps it's a pretty boring rock album
Some tracks I liked and some uniqueness, but enough tracks I just disliked
They call it garage rock because it sounds like a tool bench falling over.
Better than 'It's Blitz'. This album has a lot more attitude, and the noisier approach fits the band well. Not for me though.
Rambunctious
The album is saved for me by the songs Maps, Y Control, and Modern Romance. Otherwise, I found it to be an album that was not for me. I see this album recommended often and I don't fully understand why. I love their album "Cool It Down" and wish that one had more awareness.

Raw and energetic garage rock revival with a serious lack in overall songwriting and catchiness. 5/10
Not for me...
Kind of punk-ish which isn't a genre I like much, but kind of melodic and not too raucous vocals so not too bad.
Maps and not much else for me.
No va
Carried by one song, didn't love it
I don’t like modern indie that much. I DID like the closing track though. What is it with me and liking opening and closing tracks…
Some of it was almost painful and all of it was not for me.
Just about steals a two as the instrumentals aren’t horrendous but my god the singing is so grating
I'm pretty certain today wasn't the best for me to get this album, though I'm not sure I'd have enjoyed it regardless. I didn't sleep at all last night as I was up with a stomach thing, so driving to work this morning I probably could have done with something "easier" to listen to. I remember when this came out and they were the "next big thing." I also remember thinking I should like them, but what I'd heard I didn't really care for. With those two strikes against it, this was almost exactly what I thought it would be. As each song progressed I couldn't wait for it to be over. Karen O's voice was getting on my nerves, and there was nothing much musically that hasn't been done a million times before. But then there was the ending run of songs from Maps to Poor Song. All of a sudden her vocals were much more enjoyable, and the band got more subtle. I can't say I loved the songs, but they were way better than the first eight tracks. One last thing that didn't help. I was listening on Spotify, and the next song that came up after the album was done was The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by The Postal Service. All I thought at that point was how much I'd have preferred to listen to that record and not Fever To Tell.
meh
I liked It's Blitz but not this one.
Slitsomme greier.
2.5
Nick Zinner makes funny noises on guitar and thinks it counts as songwriting. Karen O theatrically overemotes, avoiding vocal melodies at all costs. The fact that they and drummer Brian Chase were able to put together one coherent song ("Maps") is akin to a blind squirrel finding a nut.
Run up the mill
