Reviews (page 4 of 8)

Right in the middle of their Imperial Period, and repaying the big bucks Geffen threw at them. The first side is them reaching for the rock mainstream brilliantly, the second a little more in the 80s SY noisenik vein. In Song for Karen Carpenter one of their very very best.

Really original, creative, unique sound. A bit of punk, a bit of experimental, alternative, ahead of its time rock. Good use of FX, feedback distortion with cool riffs cool lyrics and a good experience overall. (83%)

Not my favorite from Sonic Youth, but “Kool Thing” and that album cover certainly go a long way.

I have not been very kind to Sonic Youth, as this becomes the fifth album in the project so far. However, I must admit that this is the first one I liked, a perfect blend (for me) of music and dissonance, the pleasant and the unpleasant, not too tart and not too sweet.

The thought of listening to another Sonic Youth album didn't thrill me at all. It started out pretty strong, and it did surprise me in how much the album did appeal to me. Overall listening experience was about a 3, but I am bumping it up one because of the element of surprise.

The precursor to grunge. Somewhat arty. Somewhat noisy. Somewhat snarly. Altogether cool. The more I hear Sonic Youth, the more I like them.

Oh I’ll be revisiting this for sure

favorite sonic youth album I've heard so far. I think I prefer their alt rockier side to their weird experimental stuff.

Nejlepší písnička: Kool Thing (melodie, idgaf text), Mildred Pierce (riff, screamo) Nejhorší písnička: Mary-Christ (nechytlo mě, meh text i melodie) Hodnocení: 7,5/10

Sonic Youth were one of those Peel bands I struggled with growing up in the 80s. Too atonal, too based around sound not songs. So I sort of ignored them. This was another one of those albums therefore I had a bit of a sigh when I saw, and when I read the top review. There's not many albums I've found through this process that I don't know yet want to hear again. This is great. I will listen to this again.

Listened to the album twice. Great album.

I prefer this album over ‘Sister’.

You get exactly what you'd expect from Sonic Youth's first album released through a major record label. Their signature blend of sardonic apathy and too cool for everyone and everything dissenting attitudes buffed and polished with a little extra spit shine from the label. Kool Thing is the iconic single that even the uninitiated recognize as the band's sonic thumbprint in the annals of music history. It's a good album. Kool cover art. But I like Daydream Nation more.

This aged quite well. I enjoyed this. I gotta listen to some more Sonic Youth.

I dig the vibe actually. Some bands that sound like this kind of piss me off, but this album was a Kool Thing

It's one of their smoother records. It's really good but I like Sonic's rough edges.

Had low expectations but it was great

Reconfirmed my faith in this project because I found a new go-to. "Dirty Boots" makes my head bob and "Disappearer" is insane. The star down is for the industrial noise which I simply don't appreciate anywhere except for the Caretaker's "Everywhere at the End of Time".

Guitars were killer.

Sounded very good, early alternative

i like sonic youth

I loved this. I haven't listened to them much through the years, 88 - 92 I was a kid and listening to more country, so I missed these guys and the Pixies.. I'm in it now.

Iconic cover. Sonic Youth signed to David Geffen’s DGC Records imprint for this release, so it sounds a lot like what it is, a mainstream and accessible alternative rock (nay grunge) album. I mean it’s not that far removed from ‘Nevermind’ albeit not quite as glossy. I liked this more than anticipated and Kim Gordon in my opinion is the star of the show. She makes anything she sings on instantly better. Also, special shout out to Chuck D for swinging past for like 10 seconds to say a few words on ‘Kool Thing’.

I like sonic youth but this skews a bit too noise rock for my taste. Dirty boots is one of their best songs though.

When I finished this album, it left me thinking about the band Priests, so I went and listened again to "Nothing Feels Natural," which I love every time I come back to. I didn't realize/remember it at the time, but last time we listened to Sonic Youth I had the exact same reaction. ("E.V.O.L." album #398) I didn't exactly love "E.V.O.L.," but "Goo" reminded me of what I love about Sonic Youth. At the time, I said that "'E.V.O.L.' wanders off and gets lost in the abyss a bit too often. When it's focused its phenomenal, but it can't maintain those highs. It doesn't need to be focused all the time, but there were too many extended segments of bizarre background noise or weird feedback." "Goo" still had tangents of feedback and noise, but it felt more restrained and purposeful. This is Sonic Youth near their best, even in spite of the ending of "Mildred Pierce." Apparently I'm not the only one who hears Sonic Youth in Priests' sound, as several reviews of their albums also mention that influence. "Goo" is great, but I would give Priests' "Nothing Feels Natural" the edge, and one additional star.

Sonic Youth tried their best to ruin a great album with last 30 sec of Mildred Pierce and the end of Scooter + Jinx. Despite them trying to ruin their rating, there is a lot to like and appreciate about this album compared to some other Sonic Youth on this list.

All angles and distorted bass, Goo makes for a cracking, unsettling experience with Kim Gordon the perfect snaring front woman.

I can't be the only one whose only touchpoint with this album was playing Kool Thing on Guitar Hero when I was in high school. I find it really charming that Kim Gordon is having a resurgence on TikTok right now in 2024. Anyway. It's weird knowing how relatively young this album is (1989) and how much it inspired musicians -- especially those who happen to be women-- that have always just... been around for me as a mid-millennial. I would much rather listen to this than more British New Wave or some of the excessive drippy 60's/70's folk and psych rock on here.

Refined dissonance. This album has definitely influenced many of the indie bands I grew up listening to. The moments of harshness are surprisingly balanced and I enjoyed more than I thought

Very good album. Really stoked about it. 4/5

So I always thought that I liked Daydream Nation better, that this is SY getting more commercial to their detriment… but I actually think that this IS better? The weird songs are more delectably weird and the band sounds more refined than ever. Kim’s songs in particular soar here more than before. Way better than Nevermind IMO A-

Dit is goede shit. Minder letterlijk lawaai dan Eval. Soms nonchalante gesproken teksten, eigenlijk wel vet.

1. Dirty Boots: good progression, enjoyable song. 7.5/10 2. Tunic (Song For Karen): great guitar sound, way of singing is great. 8.5/10. 3. Mary-Christ: too rough on the vocals for me but still nice track. 7/10 4. Kool Thing: nice song, strong overall. 8/10 5. Mote: combination vocals instrumentals works really well. 8/10 6. My Friend Goo: banger, just good track. 7.5/10. 7. Disappearer: just really nice to listen to, great progression. 8/10 8. Mildred Pierce: great development in the track, ends a bit too aggresively for me. 7.5/10 9. Cinderella's Big Score: strong start, vocals are decent but just a bit too out there. 8/10 10. Scooter and Jinx: good track, crushing instrumentals. 7.5/10 10. Titanium Expose: again pretty good track, a tid bit repetitive. 7/10

Second album by Sonic Youth on the list, and also chronologically sixth one in their career. After making a great impression on me with their breakthrough LP "Daydream Nation", "Goo" left me with plenty of mixed feelings and reactions. On one hand I feel like it was a great build-up of previous success, with more of the same uniqueness of guitar sounds and layers. Long outros, slow riffs, very mature and probably deliberate patience made it a great successor and another must-hear position in discography. On the other hand, this album had many more songs with appalling vocal, especially by Kim. Her voice just didn't really work for me on this record and took me out of the song on few instances. Also, some of the songs were just bland. I felt like "Kool Kids", for example, was just a product placement of some sort, not fitting into the style of Goo at all. In summary, I feel like it's a good album, and knowledge of Daydream Nation gives a much needed context, but it's a small step down in terms of quality. Maybe this time there was no argument of "fresh sound", as that's the second album by SY that I've heard? Very possible.

Really my type of music, it has been a while I haven't listen to it and I'm not disappoint at all.

A milestone of noise rock and the best part is that they managed to make this album catchy, but still rebellious in sound and approach.

I’m no expert in Sonic Youth (basically just know whatever songs they had in Guitar Hero/Rock Band), so I’m not sure if Goo is the best introduction to their music (since it seems to be like…their 5th best), but I do like it, it’s cool. I like the noisy grunge-punk energy. 3.5/5

Goo and Cinderella jumped out, look thing is a classic I’ve heard a million times. Sound is still raw and fresh for a 30+ year old album.

Sick! Ja gilla de!

Dunno if Sonic Youth needs 5 albums on here but if they’re jams like this then fair enough

Goo was the follow-up to Daydream Nation, which I would consider Sonic Youth's masterpiece, and it had the added pressure of being their major label debut. Up to this point it became their most commercially successful with an increased audience and fan base. The music was less noisy than their previous records and for the most part, was their most accessible sounding album. This was an important alternative/punk record that was a commercial breakthrough and paved the way for the mainstream success for bands like, Nirvana and Green Day. I like the sound of this record as they still retain their raw, primal energy, while the structure of the songs are shorter and more listenable. Personally, I feel Goo and Daydream Nation were the peak period for Sonic Youth.

In the troika of SY's imperial height of arty cool popcraft, this is the coolest.

Really dig this album. I've heard a handful of songs but never listened to it all the way through. A few songs are a little yelly but for the most part it's great. Weird to think how this fit with grunge going on at the time but still sounds super different. Can hear the influence from this in a ton of other stuff

This is Kool. I'd heard Kool Thing before and liked it. The rest isn't quite as good, but it's close. I could definitely listen to this some more. 7.5/10.

Probably Sonic Youth's most fun album even if it's not their most consistent. Kool Thing is the obvious standout, but Tunic and Disappearer are also great

Grunge meio bagunça

Kinda fun, good riffs

The textures and the sounds were otherworldly. Hard to give five stars since I don't think it's perfect. This album has shown me a face of rock I didn't know existed. It's heavy without being overbearing. Have to take some time to analyse the lyrics a bit more though, 8.5/10

- Listened to this once before, grown on me since last time - Not as good as Daydream Nation, but not many albums are - Great album cover - Fav songs: Kool Thing, Mary-Christ, Dirty Boots

I already knew Kool Thing, so I was vaguely excited for this album. It was good. I like both of the vocalists, but especially the female vocalist. Their voices really fit this type of music. I preferred the songs that didn't have long instrumental breaks, but those weren't bad either. My favourite songs were Kool Thing, My Friend Goo, and Disappearer.

One the all time alternative albums

One of the best albums of this era - still sounds exciting and not crazily overplayed unlike some others

cool guitars

yoooo this is cool as hell i love the vibes i LOVE the album art. literally in love i want it on a tshirt. the music the drummmss the guitar just overall sound of it, still sounds fresh and like. idk i just get the feeling that the people who were listening to this in 1990 were cooler than everyone else. cooler than anyone ever will be. this is peak cool. even just the first song goes through so many different sounds and they all sound good. its always doing something new. both vocalists are great the part in tunic where it slows down and everything is kinda faint and echo-y with the feedback or whatever it is mmmmmm and then it comes back in ahh give me more of that kool thing goes hard. the drums the drums the drums mote has more of that thing where it kinda devolves into this ocean of noise where it's flowing and pulsing and i love it tbh my friend goo and disappearer are just decent. mildred pierce is kinda nuts tho. the last three are solid. enjoyed. but those opening songs are sooo good new favorite easily

Hey Goo, what's new?

MILDRED PEIRCE

Good to delisted to this, it’s been a while. Clever, raw songs and terrible vocals.

My 2nd favorite from them (Sister being first)

I enjoyed this, pretty fun punk album

4/5. A surprisingly enjoyable listen. Some great punk songs and weird instrumentals. Definitely going to spin this one again.

Sonic Youth continued their winning streak of high-quality albums that struck that more accessible balance of guitar-screeching chaos and indie catchiness with 'Goo'. While this album doesn't quite capture the greatness of 'Daydream Nation' or even 1987's 'Sister', there is a ton to enjoy here. 'Kool Thing' is arguably the band's peak radio hit-wise, and yet they still manage to stay true to their alternative, esoteric style, what with the spoken-word bridge conversation. Other highlights include the Lee Ranaldo-led fuzz fest 'Mote', 'Dirty Boots', 'Disappear', and, while not an easy-listening song by any means, I can't deny that the bizarre 'Mildred Pierce' certainly left an impression. On a final point, I can't listen to a Sonic Youth album and not give a shoutout to Steve Shelley - that man can drum like it's nobody's business, and SY's songs simply wouldn't have the energy and punch that they often have without his work on the drums.

I really liked this one! It had a few songs on it I wasn’t a fan of, but it also had songs I loved. Overall, a really enjoyable album!

I enjoyed it more than I expected. SY albums are kind of tough listens and I am glad this one resonated with me. 4/5

Sonic Youth has been a difficult band for me. Their noise excursions always rub me the wrong way, but when a song of theirs hits me it absolutely floors me. Goo is one of my favorite Sonic Youth albums. Songs like Cool Thing and Dirty Boots two of those songs that hit me right where I live.... and ther's others so despite the noisy excursions; 4.5 stars

Proper rock songs and yet no sellout on the major label debut. Hit 'em where it hurts Tell it like it is Yeah

Just a killer all around record. I love Sonic Youth.

Completely unhinged at times but a pretty good one! Will probably be coming back to this. Favourite: Titanium Expose

Very nice album. Takes you back to the moment.

This was really quite good. While listening I mistakenly thought it came out in the late 90s, and said to myself "Oh yeah this is very emblematic of the era, it feels like a natural evolution of grunge and alt rock" only to be reminded afterward that it was released in 1990, predating much of what I thought it was an evolution of. Honestly that alone bumps my respect for this project up by a lot; I'll now say it's wonderfully ahead of its time while at the same time obviously influencing so much of what will come so soon after it. Full of attitude, experimentation- both in sound and production. It sounds like the kind of project where they don't care whether you like it, they're just doing what fascinates and excites them. Thankfully, I'm fascinated and excited right alongside them. Not to say that everything lands, of course. The vocals on Mary Christ and My Friend Goo leave a sour taste in my mouth, the back half of Mote isn't the sort of cool-down spectacle that I think fits the middle of an album, and Disappear is about twice as long as it needs to be. But I remember the highlights more. The galloping drums in the middle & end of Cinderella's Big Score. The wild layered guitar noodling on Tunic and in between Mary Christ's verses. The wake up call that is Mildred Pierce. Overall I'm really quite impressed that a single album so fully embodies grunge, noise, & 90s alt-rock. Like, this may as well be THE quintessential entry of the era for all of those. Well done.

I haven't really enjoyed other Sonic Youth Albums but I get the hype for them a little more now. Maybe this album is just purely more commercially catchy, but I found myself getting sucked into the songs and losing track of time. +1 for getting me into a band I thought I didn't like

It was fine

Roils and moils. Some great licks and cuts on first half, second half darker and more exploratory. One likes both halves, while recognizing the merits of the target criticisms (i.e., too-cool-for-school, prententious-in-its-artiness/avant-garding).

Reminds me of the band Spoon or Death Cab. That fuzzy electric guitar with the high, articulate vocals. This is really progressive stuff here. I never heard this album, but I can't believe they fell off the radar! Tunic is fascinating, and a track that would most likely never be played live. The woman vocalist also adds so much more to this band. Kudos to Sonic Youth for featuring their musicality so strongly. Vocals are secondary to just a tight rock band!

so great

The more I listen to Sonic Youth the more I like them

Kool Thing good. Kinda like Dirty Boots and Tunic (Song for Karen). I wish Mildred Pierce ended with just the riff with no screams.

My introduction to Sonic Youth. It's good and more approachable then the previous albums, good stuff.

I've just never been a big Sonic Youth fan. That being said I liked this record more on this listen then I did 10 years ago. A touch more mellow then Daydream.

Decent, grungy rock album. Switching from male/female vocals track by track kept interest

Noisy and eclectic.

I tend to have the same issue with all Sonic Youth albums, which is that I enjoy them okay, but I never feel compelled to listen to them again. I've seen them live twice, and loved them both times, so the issue seems to be more with how their sound translates to a recorded medium. This album I liked a little more than the others I've listened to. It feels like it has a distinctive Pixies influence that works well with their style. The songs also feel more structured and less noise-based, which I think helps it translate to a recording better 4/5

Album 30 on my run through this list and only the second which I actually have in my record collection. Consulting some of the other reviews, I’m not at all surprised how many detractors this album, and Sonic Youth in general, provokes. Ironically, those well-trodden platitudes about the pretentious art school wankery and rebarbative musical structures are far more banal than anything you’ll ever hear by this groundbreaking band. And this is nowhere near their finest work… That being said this album is unquestionably the go-to entry point for Sonic Youth. One apposite commonplace you often hear regarding this album is the noticeably more melodic overtones on this record. Taking its cues from Daydream Nation, Goo subtly amplifies the band’s pop sensibilities on a trajectory which they would continue to follow for the next decade. That being said, this accessibility is a relative quantity. The band don’t entirely compromise their avant garde fundamentals and nowhere is this more present on songs like “Mote” - bookending its hooky, punk rush with aural assaults of feedback and interminable drones in keeping with the band’s ethos. Perhaps the reason why I nevertheless remain somewhat indifferent towards this album (in light of my adoration for albums like “Bad Moon Rising” and “Evol”) can be traced back to its indeterminate artistic vision. It’s not as punishing or challenging as their most experimental works nor as melodically captivating as their later albums. In a way that’s what makes it such a unique record in the band’s discography; the album against which you measure your preference for Sonic Youth’s command of otherworldly distortions of pop music paradigms by way of ungodly noise, or their acclaimed sense of songcraft. Either way, this album more than deserves to be on this list.

strange misty agitated punk with fever dream lyrics. pretty killer vibe tbh

Released during their imperial phase, at least an imperial phase as far as Sonic Youth goes. I love the band's infatuation with Karen Carpenter, which ultimately led to their most recognizable song, a cover of "Superstar". This is the one that firmly established the band as the Fleetwood Mac of noise music. Their orchestra of sound all flows together seamlessly, serving as a blueprint for many imitators. Few if any captured similar success.

Didn't realize Titanium Expose was on this one.

As punk rock as the 90's get. No wonder this is a classic

essential noise rock

Quite good, common Sonic Youth W

juventude sônica

Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore are divorced, and you're just the orphans left behind.

Classic anti big government 90s goth kid anthems

Album is maaad decent, and slaps so hard under the right circumstances

Ok a sonic youth album that I didn’t hate - some good tracks here - and some shall k dare say qualify as good songs - dirty boots and a few others.

Not a band that was on my radar at the time. Always liked their album art though. Well worth a listen to.

Recently, I reviewed a Britpop LP and commented that it was either my age or my nationality that was presenting an obstacle to my understanding of what the artists were trying to express. A listen to 'Goo' confirms that it must be a cultural thing rather than age, for most of 'Goo’s' themes and name dropping I did comprehend- ‘Tunic,’ for example, as a platform to uncovering the root causes of anorexia, while honoring the musical legacy of Karen Carpenter, or the criticism of misogynistic attitudes among male rappers and the hypocrisy of African American rappers, in particular- LL Cool J, to be exact- in perpetuating this archaic climate (‘Kool Thing’). I don’t know how important a comprehensive understanding of Sonic Youth’s lyrics is anyway to one’s enjoyment of their music. I don’t mind some mysteries left unsolved: What does satan (who, in the place of a cat, got someone’s tongue), a liason with a witch in a coffee truck, and the phrase six-sex-six have to do with ‘Dirty Boots’ on the opening track, and what do those dirty boots even signify? 'Goo’s' lyrical proclivities aside, Sonic Youth is always more about the music. Kim Gordon’s bass remaining one note steady while Steve Shelly goes all Keith Moon on his kit, and guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo sonically swirl around and around, like a pair of tornados emanating from their amplifier fans. And somehow it always works. Sonic Youth is liquid fire. A sure way to create some goo. And I'm glad to get stuck in it.

Weird, very nice guitars, kind of repetitive at times. Too artistic maybe. Kool Thing is a classic, but Titanium Expose is very nice too. Solid 4.

Effortlessly classic, so many captivating noise guitar songs.

Great originators of emotional rock and roll that is as unpretentious as it gets. They might be the founders of the genre of post-rock too. Which is funny to write. I listened to the heck out of this. It's a high 4 for me.

great record, love sonic youth, only slightly too precious

Loud, off-the-wall, quirky rock. I enjoyed the unconventional singing that gave a distant, nonchalant vibe to the songs. Quite a fun listen. 7/10

Great band and great album. Not their best but maybe their most accessible. Iconic album cover too.

Noisy, not in a bad way, alt rock thats really strong. Much prefer the female vocalists songs to those of the guy's, but that's more my taste in alt rock than a reflection of his singing, which is still pretty good! Give me that slightly disinterested, monotone, yelling female vocal performance, I'm a sucker for it.

Side A was brilliant but Side b was a bit meh few duds, overall 7.7 alt rock 👍. Cover art has quite a story as well 😅

Good album - definitely worth investigating further.

First half is extremely enjoyable, the second half fizzes out just a little bit. Overall a classic. Pillar for alternative rock music. 4/5

Lots of hot hooks and smoldering riffs and slow burns. Classic. A tale of two sides, with second half the much artier and avant-garder.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this and how diverse their sound was. I mean, they keep a genre going but there was even some pretty rocking heavy metal bits in some songs.

I need to give this another listen. You can tell some of it is "quite" experimental, but a lot of it is pretty solid. ANd i feel like it's the kind of album that can really grow on you.

Masterpiece. Playful distorted glory.

Love listening to Sonic Youth when I just need some noise to throw around my energy...solid album

Another band I've never listened to but knew I should. Really enjoyed this one! A bit of an acquired taste sometimes, but I definitely will use this as a jumping off point into exploring more of Sonic Youth's catalogue. Not super into some of the noise rock stuff, but other songs more than make up for it.

Love this alternative sound, it's amazing how different is was from other music of the era.

Dirty Boots into Karen is a strong 1-2. This album definitely has my attention.

I like Kim's songs in particular. I wasn't aware Karen Carpenter died from anorexia related problems at age 32. Tunic's a good song and it's cool that this topic is addressed in song. Kool Thing is also a good song and it's brave to attack the Black Panthers. The second half of the album starts to experiment more with noise. The solos and,  in particular, the long fade in Mote are good examples. My views on noise change over time. I have learned to understand  that musicians have an ability to hear and appreciate sounds that us mere mortals will never be able to appreciate.  I'm good with most of the noise on this one.

This album is noisy AF but surprisingly listenable. I think Kool Thing is equal to Daydream Nation's Teen Age Riot, and the rest of this album is pretty solid also. Getting your head and bashed by a wall of guitar sound is offset nicely by Kim Gordon's laid back vocals eg on Tunic. According to Wiki, at one point Moore's amplifier overheated and exploded but they were fascinated by the results so they kept it for Scooter and Jinx. That's the stuff of legend.

The rock on which all subsequent alt was built

This is an excellent album. Sonic Youth really mastered the effective use of distortion, feedback and noise better than anyone I can think of. A lot of bands would follow in Sonic Youth’s footsteps, but ultimately there is nothing else out there like them in music. The songs on Goo are moody and hard burning with a great, menacing undertone. Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo’s explorations of guitar are brilliant and fascinating. They push the instrument into places you didn’t even know existed. Moore and Kim Gordon's alternating vocals just ooze with an insouciance that’s so evocative of the mood of that era. Also frankly, this album just rocks. Fave Songs: Tunic, Titanium Expose, Disappearer, Dirty Boots, Mote, Kool Thing

Noise Noise Noise and more Noise. Beautiful Noise. Sonic Youth you do it like no other, going at it like a bull in the heather. Kim Gordon didn't get enough props for her work in this band. Thurston Moore uses a Big Muff to very different effect to how I did when I was younger and more of a Kool Thing. Scream, squelch, drive, dive and rise again. One thing is for certain. I'd love to jam some of these songs live and loud. Noise Noise Noise and I love it.

I was late to get into Sonic Youth. It wasn't until 98/99 until something clicked and they started sounding awesome to me. Layers of guitars and feedback with the contrast of crisp clear vocals. Love it.

Much to my surprise I quite liked this, the songs were quite catchy and I liked the guitar and voice harmonies

Still a glorious noise, achingly cool, arch and very NYC1990s.

Love Sonic Youth - they hadn't quite refined their sound (Dirty being their peak IMO) at this point but still 3 standout tracks on this

Progressive for the period. I wish I would have had my first listen a couple of decades ago. I'd say it still holds strong. There was a section at the end of Mildred Pierce that foreshadowed a lot of the thrashier and aggressive sides of punk. It was unique and enjoyable.

Great album cover, and some of the guitar playing and atmospheres created were excellent. Some of the noisier breakdowns were a bit much for me, but saying that, it was a fantastic ending to the album.

Giving a fuck about not giving a fuck.

Great fun

Honestly I dug the sound. I knew one song by sonic youth that I really liked but I never took the time to explore there albums, glad I was taken there!

Kool Thing was fun but I didn't like some of the more screaming/experimental bits of the album.

kek album

Cooles Album!

Kim Gordon's talk singing still doesn't really do it for me, and some tracks definitely go into a category of noise that I usually don't entertain from other bands, but this album undoubtably rocks and makes me yearn to be in the scene during the '90s.

It's nee daydream nation like but it's a good effort from a band close to me heart

Nice, very cohesive album. Heavily punk rock inspired (some songs are almost hardcore). Despite this, some softness shines through on many of the songs. I also really liked the guitar work and guitar tones on the record.

Decent grunge with some really strong tracks and some easy skips. 7/10

I'm not a big fan of Sonic Youth but I think this album is very good, great guitars. Kool Thing especially

4.1 - Here's that legendary Sonic Youth sound I feel like I've been missing. "Daydream Nation" and "Dirty" seem to find the band with some of its edges polished down. Here Sonic Youth is fully immersed in its fascination with feedback, strange guitar tunings, unusual chords progressions and riffs. Some cringe moments like the political musings on "Kool Thing" and when she keeps singing "PU!" on "My Friend Goo." To me, these add to the overall charm of an energetic record that sounds like a reference piece.

Now this is some some Sonic Youth I can get behind. Grit and realness with less of an overtly politicized sound.

The last was nice

I actually liked a lot of the sounds on this album, but I think it could have been edited down by at least 10 minutes. Production quality was surprising with the guitars but inconsistent with vocals, and I generally think the vocals were more grating than they needed to be. 7

Great sound and this is what rock should feel like. Took off a star cause I don’t love the singing.

I've listened to daydream nation quite a few times but never listened to this album. It whips ass

Previously I’ve listened to a few SY albums but not this one, so I was excited to have this as my first choice. I had heard Kool Thing before and maybe Dirty Boots which are great songs. Overall I really enjoyed this album. Sick guitars and effects!

I’ve enjoyed this a lot

A strong SY album, but less noisy and more alt-rock than other albums. 7/10, I preferred 'Dirty' as well as the earlier no-wave works.

I didn't discover Sonic Youth until 1992, when Dirty was released. I quickly devoured their entire catalog, but Daydream Nation was the album I connected with the most. It's nice to have a reason to come back to this one. It still holds up. All of their music holds up. It could be released today and be totally relevant.

Better than expected and better than the last sonic youth album. Some of the spoken word over music was good, some meh. But I liked the sound and vibe all around!

I surprisingly really liked this album.

Really good. Probably my fourth favorite Sonic Youth album behind EVOL, Sister and Daydream Nation. "Dirty Boots" is a classic. 8/10

Sonic youth has been a sometimes guilty pleasure of mine. I’ve mostly listened to things past 1995 Washing Machine era. This was a fun pull back a few years. I really do love the groundwork SY did to bring some more alternative vibes onto the radio and into the mainstream.

Kool Thing rules

I think this is their first great album. I prefer 90s/2000s Sonic Youth to 80s Sonic Youth.

Noisy at some of its finest, great album

Liked this better than Daydream Nation. I can't believe I've missed this my whole life. Cinderella's Big Score was a favorite track.

I like this. Noisy but not heavy or obnoxious. Just cool alt rock. The vocals switching from song to song was nice too.

This was good. I didn’t mind the spoken word stuff too much. Weird alt rock that was interesting if nothing else.

Influential indie classic, Kool Thing alone makes this an instant classic

1990. Key Songs: Dirty Boots, Kool Thing, Titanium Expose

4/15 4.5/5. Another tough album from the Sonic Youth. Standout Tracks: Tunic (Song For Karen), Kool Thing, Mote, My Friend Goo, Disappearer, Cinderella's Big Score, Titanium Expose

Great album

The first half was good but the second half went a bit weird and shouty

not a bad album. I can appreciate an alt rock band that throws in plenty of guitar distortions, amateurish recording style and grungy vocals, but I still prefer pixies because they are a bit more upbeat and relatively more energetic.

The distortion is fun, but they never do anything interesting with it

sweet edgy noise rock

Fine but got repetitive

I just reviewed “Sister” by Sonic Youth and said “ I really want to like Sonic Youth... But whenever I listen to them it’s just really annoying.” But for this album that’s only partially true. Some tracks are really good, some are okay, and some are still really annoying. I think I have to give this a 3 but if it were an EP of just the tracks I like it would be at least a 4.

Never really sticks in my head after multiple listens. Did enjoy though…

For some reason, Chuck D saying "woooord up" on Kool Thing fills me with joy every time I hear it. More than a 3 but not quite a 4.

I didn't quite like it as much as Daydream Nation, but there's some cool songs here. I liked Dirty Boots, Kool Thing and Disappearer the most.

honestly, 7/10 some songs were a masterpiece but the rest of them were kinda…surprising. Anyway, nice begin.

Some good songs spoiled by guitar wankery. Certainly a mix of musical.

5/10 Finally, a Sonic Youth album on which can be found nuggets of magic - melody and song, revealing themselves in the sludge of two tone "riffs". However, I like music where the magic comes not in nuggets, but in great globules of wonderfulness, so... Very interested to find that the album art source was related to Myra Hindley - the great ghoul of the news that still cast a long shadow over the 80s of my youth. Seriously not cool.

An okay album, I liked Mildred Pierce the most.

A good solid album / lots of distorted guitars

Nothing on here feels genuine. 2.5/5

I would play some of these songs again. I think a 7/10 might be too high but I’ll let it slide this time.

An album of two halves. The first half was very punk with a lot of energy the second half at descended into a chaotic rabble Reading the reviews it says that this is not the best album which is encouraging 3/5

three stars for a sick album cover and "dirty boots" God bless

I’ve never been able to get into them. Yes, everything sounds very cool, but so what? And how has Kim Gordon always sounded like a middle-aged mom? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

The Strokes are Sonic Youth 10 years later. Love the sound and punk rock energy.

Album #96: Goo - Sonic Youth Genre (W): Alternative rock, noise rock Singles: Kool Thing, Disappearer, Dirty Boots I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: The cacophony of the feedback is quite stimulating and overwhelming. However, I love the lyrics of songs like “Tunic” and “Mary-Christ”. Overall, an essential decent album! Favorite songs: Dirty Boots, Tunic (Song for Karen), Mary-Christ, Kool Thing, My Friend Goo, Disappearer, Mildred Pierce, Titanium Exposé

Gooey and alright.

I don't love Sonic Youth as much as I probably should knowing my tastes, they were the peers and influences of so many of my most loved artists. I also think Kim Gordon is brilliant and I love her bass work. This album leaves me slightly cold, apart from Kool Thing. Not sure why, i just do not get the same feeling as I do from a Daydream Nation. Killer artwork though. Iconic.

Sonically "Goo" is a big sounding album and has all the ingredients that I might like to really rate this album highly, such as nice loud guitars. But it never really seems to connect or grab me in the way that it does for others. I have listened to it multiple times, over a number of days but my my response is pretty much the same - it's a good album but doesn't strike me as essential. It lacks an edge. All of the tracks were solid - Three stars. 330/1001 180/330 albums reviewed were new to me.

More listenable than the other sonic youth album but still doesn’t do too much for me

First full listen ever. Whenever I hear "Tunic (Song For Karen)", I'm reminded of the film Irma Vep wherin Maggie Cheung slinks around in a leather bodysuit while that song plays. Likewise, "Kool Thing" was featured in Guitar Hero III, so I guess I'm not wholly unfamiliar with Goo, but not familiar enough to know that Chuck D is featured on "Kool Thing". I understand why people like Sonic Youth and why they may have been the band to watch at the time, but something about Goo isn't as impressive as the few albums leading up to it. That said, still very enjoyable and noisy.

étonnement bon 3.5/5

not my favourite sonic youth it’s a little samey which makes it feel long but still decent stuff

I found this to be a pretty fun rock album that leans close to punk at times. I'd definitely listen to it again and would be interested to hear more of their work.

Pretty good. Hadn't heard much of them before despite knowing the name Sonic Youth very well. Album was decent, had kind of a Pixies vibe to their sound, just didn't enjoy every song on here and it went back and forth on how I felt about it.

Difficult for me to rate. Some of it was good, some was meh, and some was noisy wanking.

I was all over the map on this one, wanting to rate it as low as a 1.5 and as a high as a 4 at different points. I settle on a 2.5 rounded up because of how genre defining they are but not really a band I'm ever in the mood to listen to for a full album.

Agree with everything Chuck wrote. Some cool moments, accessible riffs, some typically noisy/abrasive stuff, but man I cannot stand Kim Gordon's singing voice/affect. Sounds like a petulant teenager, which I guess is the point? I loved this when I was 17...they were the first to perfect a sound and aesthetic that I now find played out and replicable. Its cool in its day...Idk. 3

Llamativo, arriesgado, intenta cosas nuevas y lo consigue. No es para mi

Good stuff but not great stuff

its a classic that inspired so many good bands like nirvana. BUT the album itself is not that good, it just has 2 good songs, one being kool thing and Dirty Boots. im going with 3 stars out of 5, just for the historical value that this record has

The sound of 1990s disaffected youth. Spirals towards the end, and Mildred Pierce is too much noise.

Probably the best out of the three Sonic Youth records I heard so far, but I still have the same problem, it lacks focus to me. Some of it is interesting, some of it is not, and though I get the appeal I just can get fully behind it as an album. Doesn't mean that some songs aren't great

4/21 Not bad

Mix bag

Unsure if the album wore on me as it went or if it's very front loaded. It was never annoying per se, but the first few tracks actually had me thinking that this would be the album to turn post-punk/shoegaze/noise rock around for me! Nevertheless, there are some good riffs overall and I did enjoy Kim's vocals a lot whenever she came up. Standouts: Tunic (Song for Karen) • Kool Thing • Titanium Expose

Some of this is great. When Sonic Yourh decides to make music and sing songs they are amazing. However, it just doesn’t take any talent or skill to produce guitar feedback and wail and there is just way too much of that.

It needs neither more nor less.

Yeah this thing was chill. Not exactly for me but I can't find anything wrong with it so why not. Favorite track was Dirty Boots or Kool Thing.

Not bad. Something about it just doesn’t hit for me though

Another one of those 80s/90s bands I’ve heard of and never really explored. Some good guitars and that distorted sound early on. Feels 90s modern yet throwback garage punk rock like. It’s really interesting and feels unique, but also can see how a lot of this distortion heavy guitar influenced 90s alt rock and grunge. It all feels like a punk band creating their own sound. The heavy feedback and distortion is a bit too much for my liking at times, but it is all part of a clearly defined sound that so many bands lack. That being said, it’s not all for me. It seems to tire out in the last few songs soo. Liked the beginning a little more. It’s somewhere between a 2 and a 3.

Highlights: Mary-Christ, Kool Thing, Cinderella's Big Score. In a nutshell: hey, cool things. Went in only knowing Kool Thing. Not bad. Not bad... Good to hear Kim doing more vocal tracks. Steve Shelley on the drums is unbelievable. More noise rock than expected. I like it. Overall: 6/10

Had never heard them before, enjoyed it

I dig it. A bit too Avant Garde but fun.

# Album Name: Goo # Artist: SOnic Youth # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: I still dont get the hype with SY. Couple of decent tracks but nothing to shout home about. # Top Tunes: Kool thing / Dirty boots # Would I listen to it again? Yes, ill give it another try.

You can feel the artistic creativity and talent oozing out of every note in this record. However, I feel like once it gets going and you realize what it's all about. You kind of realize that it's not about anything. This band is turned in some four and five star efforts.I just don't think this matches up.

not my thing

This is the kind of music I’m looking for from this list but I did find the vocals were a bit all over the place.

I restarted this a couple of times. I could see simultaneously loving it and being annoyed with it. Will likely revisit when I am in the mood for some cool music mixed with noise.

It was okay

This is such a mixed bag. Some of it is absolutely revolutionary, and some of it is laughably stupid. I think I appreciate Sonic youth more than I actually like them.

really cool guitar intros

tunic--this is respectably good. upbeat. more unique vocal arrangements--i mean kinda just talking but it's well done. mary-christ--this is a good ramones punk style bop. i don't think this counts towards the jesus song counter (which shall therefore remain at 2). kool thing--good continuity with the previous song. mote--enjoyed that one goo--vocals are less, i dunno, refined? mildred pierce--why does every indie/alt/edgy/whatever rock band from the 90s-00s just *have* to have a song devolve into static with deformed screaming descending into noise? the best part of this song is that it's only 2 minutes long my notes went the same place as my attention. album was decent, enjoyable enough. bonus points for being an alt rock band and *not* drowning themselves and us in self-imposed edgy misery. 3.4/5 rounded down.

Finger in the bum my Jesus

Half the songs, I think “this is awesome” and the other half I think “ugh” and I’m not sure I can distinguish what my criteria are. So it must be good?

Solid rocker. They may have gone to a major label but they sure didn't lose any of their edge. Favorite track: Kool Thing

Definitely the best in the repertoire. Still not a big fan of theirs.

A major label debut that trades some of Sonic Youth’s avant-garde edge for accessibility. “Kool Thing” and “Dirty Boots” are the band at their most immediate, but compared to Daydream Nation, it feels like they’re playing it safe. For the most part I enjoyed it.

Vocally, they’re not that good. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn’t. Likes: Dirty Boots, Kool Thing, Cinderella’s Big Score

Up and down, but very raw. I don't love it, but i see the prototype for early smashing pumpkins and nirvana

There is a lot of sonic youth on this list, perhaps too much. This is the the best of it.

I found myself not loving the songs but kind of liking the album. I don't know how to explain it, but I feel like the album is... odd? I guess

The Good: We get goo!!! The Bad: It’s not the goo that we thought we were going to get… The Ugly: Realizing that goo is slang for… So, album cover is awesome! Then you read the story about the image the cover art is based on, and you start to wonder what the hell the one has to do with the other… For those curious, lookup Moors Murders… But we are here to review the music, not psychopathy… At times I finally understand why Sonic Youth is so admired… and then the next song kicks in and I scratch my head to understand why people admire Sonic Youth… If I want to hear loud guitars then there are other artists I’d rather listen to… Goo… indeed. Still, I’ll be gentile and offer them 3*

There were only a couple of songs on this album that I somewhat enjoyed.

super!

Enjoyed this and you can see how it has influenced modern bands (Dry Cleaning)

Almost really good? Something is just off Best Song: Disappearer Rating: 6.5/10 Stars: 3/5

Sonic Youth were never really my thing but there are parts that I like. Made a language out of heavy distortion.

A lot of bands I really like are apparently really influenced by Sonic Youth. This was fine, but didn't love it.

3/5. Some good, some great, some horrible

Sonic Youth is another one of those bands that I know are loved but that I've had a hard time getting into. That said, I did enjoy listening to this more than I expected to. Sometimes a little noisy guitar rock is just what you need on a Tuesday morning.

Like the music, don’t like the people.

Had never listened to a full Sonic Youth album and mostly enjoyed this. The songs are tight and the coolness factor is high. Sometimes the songs go on too long and kind of go off the rails. Really liked the driving, weird "Mildred Pierce." Think I'd like this even more with another listen.

Mostly new to me, only knew Kool Thing going in. Not sure how I felt about this one, loved some of it, like the aforementioned song and Tunic, turned off by others like My Friend Goo. I appreciate what these guys did for indie and alt in the 90s but theres also something about them, like they take themselves way too seriously and think they're so cool. Idk, maybe its just me

This is my second Sonic Youth album (Daydream Nation). At the onset I enjoyed the sound, but I can’t say this album or the band this far has had the “it” factor for me to care or explore much deeper.

I don't think I like this album as much as I do some of Sonic Youth's other work, although the album artwork on the other hand is fantastic. Favorite track: "Tunic"

Better than I expected

I’m going to get hate for this, but it all just sounds the same. Not sure why we needed three Sonic Youth albums on this list.

Solid. Bit noisy and distorted, innit? Some of the tracks were unlistenable, but that's expected.

Best Song: Mary-Christ. Has an almost punk vibe that I quite liked. Worst Song: Mote. I'm not a fan of this kind of protracted, hazy fuzz masquerading as groove. Overall: It's okay. Oddly, as I listened to this album (with only passing name recognition for the band), I had the distinct feeling that although this album means basically nothing to me, I could see how for some people this music might make up a considerable part of their whole identity. It doesn't speak to me, but I feel I'm being spoken to.

Decent but CD bloat takes it away from being a 4

Err. Doesn’t do much for me. They tried. I find it unnecessarily loud. Bad distortion - super high pitches made me feel uncomfortable. I feel like they put on wha they thought were “cool”, but it was not too pleasant as a whole..

I was iffy for the first few songs, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Kool Thing is the star of this show.

I think I just don’t get the appeal here. I really enjoyed parts and some of the chord progressions have gotten stuck in my head, but overall, this one just isn’t pulling on my heartstrings.

This album was fine, but I mostly found myself bored with it. I didn't dislike it. It just all felt the same. I will say, the ending of "Mildred Pierce" did get me. It shocked me out of my trance.

I don't know, seems like this one is really overrated. I expected something exceptionally good, but it's just avarage randomness

Pretty good and listenable but nothing memorable.

Getting 2 back-to-back Sonic Youth albums was rough, considering I rated EVOL a 2...but this one was better! More music, less noise - though still some moments of uncomfortable cacophony. I dig the punk rock sounds more than the "no wave" noises.

I appreciate the avant garde aesthetic. but the music itself is just so mid

Alternative pop punk, started off strong then got worse near the end.

Started off great and then got a little too messy and weird, averaged it out to a 3

Much more listenable than the last sonic youth album (which i got only a few days ago). I feel like there are serious limits to the quality of noise rock, its never going to match the best rock subgenres because it intentionally creates nothingness.

“I’m as real as a donut, motherf*****”

This is fine. I just don't think I'm Kool enough to "get" this.

I have to admit to a certain amount of Sonic Youth fatigue at this point. I’m ~660 albums in and have had like 5 of these. To me this was ok, the rocking parts are cool. The attitude is fun. The lyrics can be pedestrian.

Mildly annoying sound, but venerable for the movement that it started. Kim’s voice feels overly punk-affected, provocative and raw at the expense of heart and feeling.

3.5 honestly. great background music if a little too loud and jarring at times

Meh, too grungy, może być, no ale nie są to moje wajby

Tunic hit hard.

I went down a rabbit hole to see how much Thurston Moore acknowledged the influence of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground on his music. Spoiler alert: he whole-heartedly admits it.

Nah, enough with Sonic Youth for me

I hated Sonic Youth's older albums, but this one isn't so bad. Less full on punk, which makes it more tolerable for me.

Didnt finish

*1990. *Sonic Youth should be my vibe (90s alt/grunge) and I want to like them, but a little goes a long way. RATING - 6/10

Decent new wave punk.

Shameful musical heresy #342: I'll confess; much of the time, I can't really be bothered with Sonic Youth. Dirges. There, glad I got that off my chest.

Goo was really fun. The rest was decent.

Cool image. Music does not excite me.

I really hate talk singing. That being said, there’s some solid instrumental parts but it doesn’t add up to something I’ll prob listen to again. Fav track: Titanium Expose
