Super duper synth

I remember not really liking Justice when this album first got traction, I seem to remember being disappointed that they were this heavy abrasive sound when I was hoping for another offcut disco duo like Daft Punk. I think the album Woman really turned me on to Justice, and revisiting this now there are some great tracks on here and I can hear how the production of this still stands abreast of the rush of noisy music that was to swamp the pop scene a few years after this album. Would be a 4.5 if it didn't have The Party on it.

The back half of this album seemed a lot more electro than the first to me. Preferred the first half by a good bit.

Kommt zwar nicht an daft punk aber trzdm stark. Strong 8/10

Great electronic album kinda like Daft Punk but not as good. Will most likely revisit this a fair bit! Best Songs: - D.A.N.C.E - Newjack - Phantom I + II - The Party

Not usually a dance music kind of guy but this goes hard

Wow, an album I actually know. D.A.N.C.E is such a modern classic that it might rocket this album to an instant 4. This album fucking rules. The bass lines are fantastic, and the overall production is great. There are only 2 or 3 songs that I don't completely vibe with, but they are still good and I would rather listen to them than most of the other albums we have had to listen to. This album feels so ahead of its time for something that was released in 2007. Super influential to whatever this genre of electronic music is. It sounds like something that would get released in the late 2010s. I would say this was a precursor to Dubsetp without being as annoying as dubstep. This isn't quite a 5, but it's pretty close. A strong 4/5 (4.5)

God this takes me back immediately to freshman year of high school, which may be upsetting to our 2 resident dad reviewers - Borat had just come out and Justice came out of nowhere. Dunno what it is about electric funk/dance but its biggest records are always produced by duos, invariably European, and tend to not have follow ups of the same magnitude for YEARS if at all (thinking Daft Punk and the short lived duo Oliver). D.A.N.C.E was inescapable and is still really fun today but I think this whole album is sequenced really well and maintains an interesting variety of textures - which makes sense coming out of DJ culture. It's one unimpeachable set. I'm definitely biased because Funk/Dance/Disco is one of my favorite genres (My parents fed me a steady diet of Tower Power, Earth Wind and Fire, MJ, Isley Brothers, Brothers Johnson and loads of disco greatest hits compilations) and exposure to records like this led to one of my current faves Flamingosis who chops and screws samples in a similar spirit. But yeah its really hard for me to find anything to be critical here. This week really satisfied!

Liked it much more than the other electronic albums so far. Very catchy

Highlights: "Genesis," "Phantom," "Stress," "Waters of Nazareth" In the past, I would have assumed from "DANCE" that this was just someone reheating Daft Punk from 10 years before, but this is actually something you hear huge names cribbing from 3 years later. Literally 3 years. Kanye's MBDTF? 2010. Skrillex's first singles? 2010. Crystal Castles II? 2010. Sleigh Bells? 2010. Tell me even the infamous "Party" is not Ke$ha? 2010. Come on. All of synthwave was waiting for this development in mixing. Carpenter Brut was 5 years, and there's no way as a Frenchman this wasn't something that made him quit metal and pick up some keys. Slamming the mids on samples to hell is something everyone is still doing under pretenses like "breakcore" or whatever. I don't really like it. Some of the things that are meant to build tension and hype just annoy. Even the satisfying cadences are textbook and don't carry the heavy repetition too far. But '10s-'20s have been The Great Clippening, so no matter what, you absolutely have to hand it to them.

good electronic sound, unique and interesting.

I still don't think it's possible to find a better one-note DJ set. The second half features mix things up but also break some of the glossy conceit, not sure to what effect.

Enjoyed the album. Would listen again.

D.A.N.C.E. is a classic from when I was younger, but nowadays this style is not really my favorite type of music.

A little noisy, but great album

Daft Punk, Air, Justice - damn, the French really like their EDM. I remember that Waters of Nazareth song. I used it on the treadmill to get my RPMs up. It’s nice to hear that the rest of the album has the same stucco-like syncopated feel. Not sure that MJ tribute song aged super well, but oh well.

A very enjoyable electronic album, I really wasn't sure what to expect going into this one. A pleasant surprise. Genesis and Phantom pt2 are probably my favourites

Dig it.

Glad they iterated on this on Woman Worldwide

Not a fan of electronic music but this album was fun. I enjoyed quite a few songs and the entire album flows incredibly well. It almost feels like a book, with chapters, a beginning, and an end.

Out of all the French Disco revival bands these guys have always been my favourite. Less disco than daft punk, less grandious than M83, more developed than Les Ryhmes Digitals (Yes yes that last ones an english blok called Stuart but I still count him). But I just love their alternative edge, selling dance music to the rock kids, and as one of those rock kids I loved it. Some of their synth sounds are incredibly dirty, they seem to sculpt sawtooth waves into these jagged weapons which are capable of going up against the heaviest guitar. But then they offset it with these amazing catchy palate cleansers like D.A.N.C.E. Phantom part II has long been onc of my favourite electronic tracks of all time, it just blasts out of the gate with that looped tape stop sound from the first part (I think its some heavily processed vocals although I have no evidence for that) and then tha bassline drops in blows me away every time, such a powerful sound. The album is mabe a little bloated, I think it could have had a few tracks cut and been a belter of a 40 minute album but if thats their biggest crime then I'd sa they have more than got away with it.

Good lord, this hot streak just keeps going doesn't it? Here's an album I can really sink my teeth into. Aside from Daft Punk, I feel like we don't get many severely dance-y electronic albums. We've had a lot of proto-pioneer stuff, but not much to assault you with bass until your body is simply forced to move. Enter Justice. More specifically, enter "Genesis." For years, the only Justice song I knew, but I know it by heart. What a pleasure to hear the rest of this album, because gee whiz it goes hard. So many killer songs on this one. A few that don't work for me, but not enough to rain on the parade. Killer stuff. Favorite tracks: Genesis, DANCE, Phantom pts. I and II, Waters of Nazareth, One Minute to Midnight. Album art: A 3D outline of a cross, at a very odd angle. It's simple, but incredibly foreboding. Perfectly suited to music this hard. 4.5/5

I really liked this album

Just some solid, fun electronica

D.A.N.C.E. is great. I'm always happy when it comes up randomly on a playlist. The rest of the album is enjoyable and I had a fun listen this morning with it.

Crazy diversity in one album. Favorite track - Genesis. Made me want to go dance for 3 hours, which sadly was not an option at 7pm on Thursday. Will listen again.

I don't listen to a whole lot of electronic dance music. I was only vaguely aware of who Justice were. But damn... this is really fun stuff. These guys are great!

I’m surprised at how much I like this, I guess electronic albums can be good when each song is unique and they’re not like 2 hours long. 8/10

Energetic, fun, hypes me up. Not a song I want to skip

Amazing gritty sound. Lacks a bit of 'breathing room'. Pretty much two songs that aren't driven by the heavily distorted bass sound. D.A.N.C.E. is an absolute banger but I'm unsure if it belongs on this album. Still very cool though, could've gone 5 stars with a bit more room.

Jú, töff. Svolítil læti, þyrfti betri heyrnatól til að njóta vel, og kannski minna jólaskap, finn að ég vil heyra ljúfari tóna um þetta leyti, en sko, samt skemmtilegt.

Mola. Electro houseFrench house

u was at the club

I had heard a couple songs off of the album before, so I was interested to see what else this album had on it. I was surprised that most of the songs did not have vocals, as most of the songs I knew did have vocals. Still, it was pretty good. My favourite song was DVNO.

48:13 seconds of just French Noises.

Love love loved it! A discovery. Bit like Daft Punk crossed with Air?

Not at all my usual genre but this is pretty fucking fantastic.

I really like this. This is the kind of electronic music that I'm looking for. More like this and leas like so much of the rest in the genre, PLEASE! The only downside is that The Party is so wretched that it gave me some stank face, and not like the kind of stank face you get when you hear some awesome, grimy death metal. Naw, this is the stank face you make when you hear something that makes you envy the deaf. It's just so bad. What a turd in the punch bowl. The rest is just great though.

from the very first beat of this album, the music leapt out of spotify and into the world. every single song comes across as cool, though that doesn't quite seem to cover it. these instrumentals are wonderful and vivid; they carry the entire album well and the minimal vocals don't even matter. because of how commanding the instrumentals are, it's kind of weird when a guest vocalist is on a track. electronica's foundation in disco is so clear here, too. the disco beat is undeniable! side note: this album is great to walk to, with a peppy beat in every song.

This album really slaps. I was familiar with a couple of Justice songs and remixes (if you do not know the Justice remix for MGMT's Electric Feel, do yourself a huge favor and listen). This album has shown me that Justice definitely has a signature sound, and I am here for it. The music here is edgy, dark, and dramatic -- just the way I like it. As the duo has noted before, their music is derived from disco, distorted, and made electronic. This may be why I like it so much. Either way, I am able to hear some of those disco roots when I really listen. The heavy use of organ makes things seem very operatic at times, too. Regardless, this album is just full of energy and is incredibly danceable. Good, modern EDM was harder to come by in 2007 (when this album was released), so I have no doubt that this album has been among a privileged few albums that have set the tone and stage for EDM music today. I would also go as far as to say that this album, now 15 years old, is still better and more unique than so much EDM that is released today.

Dance music like this appeals to people like me because the songs are structured more like pop/rock with clearly defined sections and melodic elements. I really enjoyed this and would definitely play it again for party background music or just when I want something upbeat but not ‘sing-a-long’

Extremely formational album for me as a teen. Had this CD in the car and would blast phantom pt1-2. - 4.5 stars

peak HS album for me, used to go for runs on forest trails near my house and listen to Stress on repeat. that being said, I never really listen to this front to back -- Genesis, D.A.N.C.E, DVNO, Stress, Waters then repeat

Fun post Daft Punk kinda sounds but heavier. Some tracks outstayed their welcome though

What a treat. A post daft punk electro dance thing. I felt like I'd heard every song before somewhere. Enjoyable low calorie fodder.

Having never heard of Justice before, I quite enjoyed this. Some tracks felt a bit too long, but in the right setting that'd be fine. Some parts felt Daft Punk-ish, maybe more like Daft Grunge, anyway still enjoyable. Iconic album artwork too!

First 3 tracks - 5/5, the rest of it going between 3-4/5. a total of 3.5/5 brought up to 4 because of the initial trio I love how the first three tracks flow into each other seemlessly. Genesis is a great opener to the album setting the tone of the entire record, then followed by Let there be light constatly repeating the same melody over broken beats and amazing bass lines to ultimately flow into D.A.N.C.E. - just a perfect dance track (the bass on this!). This trio of tracks is just perfect. However, I feel like this was all there was to the album and the rest of is ok but does not go back near anywhere to the quality of the three openers. oh and I don't mind the Party and kind of like it - on the other hand, i thought DVNO was much more annoying

Was surprised I didn't know any of this before considering its exactly what I would usually listen to. A lot of good stuff that is already in my playlist but a few tracks were not as good as I had hoped.

I am not interested in mainly instrumental music, but this was good. 4/5

Dancy, funky, interesting

Sleepy, good walk and talk, no mop, nap, tv, beans, chill, walk, bed

Good tunes to party too. Had fun listening to these at school and university. People compare to daft punk, don't think they are that good but still great

Absolutely love this album. Favorites: Stress, Waters of Nazareth

Right up my street. Never heard before. Will definitely be on the replay list

I enjoyed this, it's quite good. 4/5

This is the first album to appear on my 1001 albums page that I've already listened to! It's super impressive seeing how this impacted future electronic music, and how it stays so impactful while being a mostly instrumental album. Those non-instrumental tracks I generally don't like as much, and there is a marked difference between the big name songs on here, like DANCE, Stress, Waters of Nazareth, Phantom, etc. and everything else.

the party

Brilliant.

Apparently this album is called Cross if you buy the actual record/CD, but Justice in digital format. That's odd. Anyway, to the music - was much much better than I expected, a French dance duo who I hadn't heard of. Very listenable, not overly repetitive (which is how I find most dance/electronic stuff) and most importantly not too long! Each track was 3-5 minutes, nothing really outstayed its welcome and the album didn't either. Think it deserves a 4, really good.

I really did not know what to expect with this work. The cover makes you think hmmmm.... overtly religious...? Techno is not my first choice to listen to, but this had a definite groove I really dug. When I played the opening bit for the Mrs., she remarked that it sounded a bit like "Thriller," which makes sense since later on in the album they had the tribute to Michael Jackson. But... man, those first two tracks are so damn funky, more than I expected. Really quite enjoyable. As for "D.A.N.C.E.," I was not a big fan of the vocals. "The Party": Uffie's vocals sounded a lot like Ke$ha. Is that a good or bad thing, though? I think actually the songs without vocals were a bit more enigmatic and enjoyable. Something to rock on in the house as a change of pace. Really enjoyed it.

Tight album. Best electronica on this list since Kraftwerk (these two groups might be the only ones I actually care to listen to more of). It had me toe tapping right from the opening few beats in Genesis. And so much seamless transition from track to track; kudos to the duo for successfully creating their opera concept. Other big toe tappers for me were Phantom (except the last 45s or so, see below), DVNO, Stress, and Waters of Nazareth. The album has its times where the beats are a little too abrasive or stuttered (the glitchy effect in Newjack and the final 45s of Phantom is a bit tough to take) or the vocals are annoying (sounds like bad Kids Pop on DANCE or bad Keisha on The Party). But overall, this album is waaaay better than most electronica I have heard.

Sequência envolvente com clima e batidas poderosas.

Great electro. Ive Been on live their show, and it was amazing

After the first 4-5 tracks I was worried that I was gonna get worn out by the beats, but luckily Justice brought some variation and softer cuts in the second half. Really fun grooves on this one. 8/10

Another album I reckoned was "quite new" but is actually 15 years old - Good album though, Kind of French electro house synthy.

2007 EDM Not bad, some bangers near the top but it falls off after the first 4-5 songs

A fantastic rock-tronica album.

Very if it’s time but still solid

Good electronic music.

Niet per se mijn stijl en veel herhalend, maar klinkt toch wel vet.

This album seems like it has been largely forgotten but it's worth a relisten.

this brought me back

fine. 4? better than i was expecting with such biblical reference. very house.

listen

I have a soft spot for Justice that I can't quite... justify. Maybe it's because this album and Crystal Method's "Divided By Night" were my first real intro to the genre. They both taught me to expect a lot from electronic musicians. Complexity, nuance, balance, and (most of all) a real melody line. Justice does a great job of ensuring that, even without a vocalist, the listener knows which song they're listening to and can hum along with it. I really do like this album a great deal. However, in the interests of fairness, it DOES get repetitive and some of the sounds are dated so I can't quite justify a full five-star review.

Already love this one.

Bumping. Fun.

Don't usually go for dance/house/electronic music but this fucking slapped. I appreciated how a lot of the songs continued off of the previous one, sort of borrowing each others' energy. Very cool album.

Serie A, Channel 5, John Barnes! Will forever associate Phantom pt 2 with that one season that happened. Another fun album, possibly more fun and zippy than Daft Punk were, but admittedly not as good. I can see this one getting displaced by better stuff down the line but you never know, there's some weird choices in the list. Even so, this is one I come back to semi-regularly. D.A.N.C.E, Phantom, New Jack, The Party, Stress all obvious highlights.

Important electro disco album

Funky and fun

Two great albums in a row. This is perfect music for building furniture. It moves, it grooves. Highly recommended.

Great electronic album.

This reminds me of uni / the time just after uni (because I was a little slow on the uptake). Really enjoyable set of bangers that was clearly influenced by Daft Punk etc but brings something new to the table too - and I think that thing is lots of lovely distortion.

Despite 'D.A.N.C.E' being a pretty big hit, my 12-year-old self must not have heard it that often because I barely recognized it. Funny thing, though - it definitely wasn't my favorite track on the album but it was the one that was stuck in my head for hours after listening. I enjoyed the instrumentals more overall - I actually found the songs with lyrics to be ironically lacking. Newjack in particular was IMMACULATE. I'll definitely put this on repeat.

baita som, eletronico e pa

Very interesting electronic music. The mix of classical, disco and electronic is quite groundbreaking. It hads something a little bit more experimental to the electro/dance empire Daft Punk already built at that time in France

Essential

Excellent rock influenced EDM. May save some tracks.

As my addiction to pain killers spiralled out of control, I knew I had to listen to some Justice to stop myself from shitting myself to an early grave. My word, did it help. It turned it all around for me. I went from popping pills every 13 minutes to shagging Britney Spears. A big meaty casserole of dicks and anuses.

It doesn't quite hit the heights of timeless classic like a lot of the albums produced by Justice's massive '90s dance band forefathers but it makes you want to tap a toe, throw a shape and shake the derriere and that is good enough for me.

Enjoyable dance music.

I enjoy electronic/dance music such as this album offers. I liked the experience that the album presented. There was just a little something missing to keep me from loving it though...I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just felt a little empty for me at moments.

A good solid groove.

Listened all the way through one sunny morning. Electronica that gets you and about if you're in that kind of a mood. Trouble is I havn't been since, so it gets resigned to history with a 'yeh, was alright'

Definitely a seminal moment in electronica, this album grabbed my attention back in the day for the way it crafted melody out of texture, and its prediction of synthwave and 80s retro to come soon after. That said, it feels a bit dated now. (This is also the first album on the list that I already knew intimately before I saw it here.)

Frábær pepp-plata. Góð á föstudagsmorgni.

The album is great, particularly when they stay away from lyrics. They have an awesome electronic groove that samples widely and has touches of a mild dubstep experimentation. Very enjoyable.

Suitable treadmill music, yeah. Fave track - "DVNO" sure is an ear worm, although my brain insists on changing it it "DVLA" which is the UK equivalent of the DMV 😆

first listen reminds me so much of Daft Punk

Justice erinnert mich immer an Laufen am Donaukanal bei Nacht ❤️ Nur die neuen Alben gefallen mir noch besser.

Feel like this will get a lot of comparisons to Daft Punk but I hear more Ratatat and Swedish House Mafia. Big, rubbery base tones. Lotta glitchiness. Basically a self-contained rave. Favorite tracks: "Genesis", "D.A.N.C.E.", "Waters of Nazareth", "One Minute to Midnight"

OK going in never having heard of this band or album, based purely on the cover, I'm expecting Scandinavian death metal. Getting started it's not that but the synths are striving for brutals. In a church organ but also big night club dance floor kind of way? I kind of dig it and am curious where it will go. Uncharacteristically (for me) I liked the darker songs the best. Genesis and Waters of Nazareth were particular standouts for me. I like DANCE and The Party the least. DVNO amused me for some reason but overall less words = more better. Overall a very good album, I'm happy to have discovered it. Also, looking through their discography, the cover art is notably awesome.

Jag gillade den!! Gör att jag vill supa och dansa trots att jag är sjuk i pesten lol

Toe tappin electric dancing time

Zuerst dachte ich: „was ist denn DAS jetzt wieder für eine Grütze?“ Allerdings ist gerade die 2. Hälfte dann BRUTAL geil. Ganz hartes Kopfnicken. Muss man sicher mehr als einmal hören.

For me, the importance of multiple listens really came through with this 00s EDM album. First listen: "Another dull dance album I'll never dance to. Hate that fuzzing distortion! Hate the production! None of it is grabbing me! Stress is a nightmare and I hate it!" Second listen: "Actually, I was being a bit harsh. There are some really cool grooves hidden under all of that cut-and-paste sampling and FX mayhem, and some interesting musical moments." Third listen: "DEE VEE EN OHHH- FOUR CAPITAL LETTERS! Stress is a nightmare and I LOVE it!" I've never been into house or electro, so wasn't expecting to like this album and it took me a while to get on board with it. But "Cross" has, above all, a really symphonic feel which I didn't pick up on so much the first time around (I was too busy trying to process all the different production elements and search for the melodies). Right from the opener, "Genesis", we have brassy samples and timpani declaring a dramatic theme. Until the beat kicks in, it could almost be Mussorgsky. The journey that follows is very well sequenced, with a proper feeling of rise and fall to it. Unlike Basement Jaxx's "Remedy" album I had a couple of weeks back, I really had the sense of a musical journey here, with much more scope and direction behind it. D.A.N.C.E, for all its ramshackle children's choir vocals, is an endearing song and a welcome flash of all-out positivity. "Newjack" is a disarmingly glitchy number that threatens to fall apart at any moment- its main hook seems to be composed of about fifteen different samples. But then things really pick up from around the half-way mark, with some intriguing choices with decidedly retro leanings. Justice's description of the album as their attempt at "disco-opera" feels very apt during "Phantom Pt. II", a real disco track held together by a tight bassline and sharp strings running all the way through it. "The Party" is loaded with analogue sounding synths and a memorable chord progression, while DVNO is my absolute favourite: lovingly styled after disco and 70s/80s, it's the new-wave funk hit that never was. Really enjoyed getting to know this album and I think it's only going to keep growing on me in future.

Never really liked EDM much... until now. This album is great. Tracks move seamlessly from one to the next. Innovative, unlike anyone else I've heard from the genre... yet apparently they are super influential for techno that followed (again, I don't listen to the genre). Mix of high and chill moments within the same track adds complexity and keeps interest from start to finish. No bad tracks, which is very rare for an album that relies on high energy the whole way. I do admit some were weak, yet those same tracks had parts I liked (e.g. I liked the first minute of "Tthhee Ppaarrttyy"). Tracks are flashy and grab your attention when something unique happens; I love it. As a disco fan, I noticed some segments that just scream disco. "Newjack" is the most obvious. But also "D.A.N.C.E", "Phantom", "Waters of Nazareth." Favorites: Let There Be Light, D.A.N.C.E, Phantom Pt. II, Waters of Nazareth

This is so much dancing fun especially if, like me, you are exactly the right age for Nu Rave to have been more significant than just a curious blink-and-you’ll-miss-it footnote in pop culture history. The whole record is excellent and coherent except for The Party, which loses it a whole star (Uffie!).

pretty good

good old days. nice sounds and good effort by the house french school

DVNO is a certified banger.

Excellent

This is a masterclass in making dance music out of samples

Originally I'd never listen to this type of music, but it's so unique and experimental that you have to love it. It's electronic! I listened to this during a meditation, and it was such an incredible feeling. I find it smoothing and comforting as these tracks sync into one another effortlessly. They're gentle, creative and most of all; brilliantly crafted.

enjoyed this, 3.5 maybe but a good listen

French groove

fun key

Pretty rad.

Four stars

goooood

I didn't know the band. Amazing electronic music album. Very refreshing.

Good beats, a few really good songs, a little repetitive

p cool electronic album. kinda reminds me of daft punk

Great album, like daft punk but less interesting, not a slight would listen to again

Just terrific, absolute party album, packed full of samples and sounds, I had an absolute blast listening to this.

pretty cool edm album. Definitely worth coming back to

Une performance solide de la part de nos Français.

This was a first listen to a band I don't know. "D.A.N.C.E." was the one track that I've heard a version of somewhere. "One Minute to Midnight" is the track that got my highest rating. "The Party" was my least favorite. I enjoyed listening to the album enough that I think that I may have to turn the 3.5 stars into a full 4 star rating.

What a fucking coincidence. Yes this is good

I enjoyed this. Didn’t expect to but it was a solid listen.

Gave me the dancing sickness.

Old school

Liked this a lot! Usually I find EDM to be repetitive and boring but this had a lot of melody and reminded me more of Daft Punk than anything else.

Kinda synth, beat heavy. Weird song with kindof child-y voices, odd. Not too anxiety inducing.

An easy 4. Superb stuff.

Daft Punk.

Justice gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️from me - it was heading for a solid three stars until you get hit with the triple whammy of DVNO, Stress and Waters of Nazareth which are all insanely good

Loved it! Great album! Very fun.

Love this album. I was really vibing while listening to this.

I really liked this. It was nice that my 28 yo son and I like the same music every now and again. Lots of good pace and attitude.

Good EDM. Very much like Daft Punk

I really enjoyed most of this album.

Great Electronic with an upswing on the last few tracks.

I'm a middle aged man who shouldn't use the word 'vibe' but...this whole album has one.

Groovy French house. 'Genesis' is the best track on the album, 7/10

i liked this one a bunch

College dance party babyyy. I need to find some late-night pork rinds to soak up all that twisted tea. I can see how this album steps up that 90s electro-dance into something a little more fresh and unique. It really is a good album in the context of the genre.

Love this album, great to have another listen. I love the energy and electronic beats that aren't too clubby. There's a musical theme throughout that is noticeable too. Brings me back to college era... Highlights: -D.A.N.C.E. -DVNO -Phantom

This was a hidden gem

Quite familiar with this one. It is pretty good still. Should be a 3.3 star, but because of my old love of this, it’s a 4.

cooooollll. it all sounded great together and flowed in a way that wasn’t monotone or too similar. love the funk. 4.7

very funky cool

Nice electronic

YAAAAAAAAS

Fav Song: Genesis

Oooh, more dance and synth sounds. I dig it. I recognize D.A.N.C.E.!

Good album. Flowed well and was easy to listen to

Not anywhere near my usual listening, but a lot nicer than most EDM stuff I've heard.

A classic. Dance pop mega-jammer.

Crazy that I just listened to this album for the first time like a week ago and now I got it again. I'm not sure that it's particularly groundbreaking, though after reading up on it, it seems like this album is composed of a massive amount of samples in a way that is not particularly noticeable. Really fun and solid the whole way through 4/5

EDM but bangers

2007. Key Songs: D.A.N.C.E, Genesis, Stress

A tremendous dance record. Gold standard for french house. So inspiring to learn it was all recorded in garageband.

I'd enjoy this poppin" bottles, dancin' my face off, doin' molly at the cluh. Can't imagine listening to it regularly by myself though. D.A.N.C.E. is a recognizable tune. Stress sounds exactly like a song Kanye would release a controversial video for on his website.

I liked this. It had some energy. Made me want to move.

Didn't know this, hadn't heard of them before... turns out to be Daft Punk with a different name. Anyway, not bad. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆(6/10) Total reviewed : 358 Already owned : 79 Purchased : 16 To buy : 4 Nope : 259

Surprised I was familiar with three of these songs. A little too tech-y for me but not a bad album.

For EDM, this is fine. I knew D.A.N.C.E., that's a jam. The rest all just started to sound the same after a while. DNF (3)

Back to back with Basement Jaxx. More than I can handle. "A dance music duo who redefines what that means" is how they are listed. This was Grammy nominated, hmm, I've never heard of this or them. It's waaaaaay better than Basement Jaxx, that's for sure. Still soulless and robotic though. 92M people have listened to "Genesis" and 168M have jammed to "D.A.N.C.E." (never heard it) so they have a following. Impressive listener counts from top to bottom with only 2 songs under 8.5M listens. I'll give them credit for that. Could I ever sit around and listen to this? Fuck no. Again, soulless and serving only one purpose. I'd last 20 minutes in a disco playing this overproduced crap. Highlight was easily "Phantom", killer groove. Then "One Minute To Midnight", both felt like songs that are danceable but not strictly for dancing. 2.5-3 stars, just average stuff, no hits, nothing groundbreaking.

Yeah. Pretty good. As an electronic album it's really good. It feels almost like a movie sound track, not like an action movie but a low stake mystery, very eerie but almost like background noise

I enjoyed listening to this but don't think I'll play it again. It's a bit much: heavy, fuzzy electro beats, but make it disco

Electronic dance mix. Enjoyed the reminder of D.A.N.C.E., but could have skipped the rest of the album. Not sure why it merits top 1000 historically or musically.

Mix of nostalgic edm from the 2010s and video game music. 3.4 stars.

I either loved it or hated it!

It did improve as the album progressed, but there's much better examples of French electronica out there.

I loved this album when it first came out, listening again now it sounds really of its time I guess. Still good though, and very representative of the popular electronic music of the 2000’s

Interesting

Fine, decent dance music. Repetitive. “D.A.N.C.E.” is a keeper.

Enjoyed this a lot. Not my normal listening but this got a few plays. Sounds a little dated now compared to new electronica but on the whole, great one

I liked this album. A lot of catchy tunes, but not enough to hold me through multiple listens. There are a couple of songs and melodies that I love and will always remember, but a lot of it just recycling an idea for a loop that was great for 15 seconds but gets old by minute 2 or 3 of a track. Somewhat soulless at points as well. 3/5

Ble litt for mye med et helt album. De kan absolutt lage fengende musikk.

Rett og slett litt for lang. Kunne hatt 32 minutter som va helt knaill.

I enjoyed it but probably won't be returning to it much.

Better than I remembered, great album to workout too but it's not my favourite genre

Enjoyable. Bit different to the usual stuff on this list. Big fan of the album cover.

Some 4-5 tracks but not very likely to listen to the whole album

Nicely put-together EDM.

Starts off pretty hot but cooled off by the back end.

Justice: “The Cross” THREE STARS * I wonder why out of the 1,000s of electronic albums this one made the list. Only the 11th album on our listening expedition, perhaps another two dozen of the genre await. Since I am not an expert on the subject, and I did not explore any background to the group or record, there could be groundbreaking qualities that I missed. This 2007 effort is certainly a fine one with an interesting mix of qualities. “Phantom Part I and II” have a disco funk quality that livens up the record. Those two give way to “Valentine”, which has a great piano part. The opening track, “Genesis”, immediately grabbed my attention with an insistent bass line. The record also included some noise elements that seized my attention, although not always in the best manner. At times they tossed vocal urging and messages like the beginning of “Tthhee Ppaarrttyy” that I found more distracting than useful. It is easy to gloss over impressive segments of instrumental music. Without vocals, and often clear definitions of different songs, I can fade in and out as a listener. Is there enough to this record and others to keep me listening for an entire record? File away to come back for another session? This one definitely qualifies, but would it have done so without the artificial requirements of the 1,001 albums project?

It's said that repeating the phrase 'French Disco' 5 times in front of a mirror will invoke a musical monster. Et voilà, a Frankenstinian album created from 400 micro samples (whatever tf they may be). And like the eponymous monster, it might be misleading to go on first impressions that it's all a bit shit. Sure, there are liberal doses of French cheese. But you don't have to wait too long before a good bit comes along. 3*

Not for me, but I get it. I'd listen to this freshman year of college album on a run. ⭐⭐⭐/5 Highlights: "D.A.N.C.E." "New Jack" "Stress"

Not as good as Daft Punk or Air but better than David Guetta.

Great album cover. Started off strong but got a little bored. Maybe if I listened to this outside of work I would’ve liked it more. High 3

wild 7am listen

Overall pretty generic electronica, had a fun sound with some good to listen to songs.

Dont listen to dance music but this was alright, can imagine its good while running

WOW. The heavy and distorted baselines reign supreme on this album. The album is a very pleasant French electro and its songs are sequenced well.

Maybe just give Daft Punk a second entry and be done with it? Nothing wrong with this but it doesn't really grab me either.

It has been a hot minute since I last listened to this album; a 15-year minute. Much like Black Holes & Revelations, I wonder how well it will hold up for me now that I am crusty adult (that album proved to be 3 tracks good, 9 tracks awful for modern me). It possibly doesn't stand as much of a chance as it used to, as I have grown a lot more accustom to raw instrumentals and vocals (spoilt by the likes of Black Sabbath, Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc.) Immediately, due to lots of use in TV and Commercials, "Genesis" is recognizable with it's evil fuzzy bass tone and near-gothic piano chords at it's close that can accentuate the feeling of so many different vibes; it is still a masterpiece now. "Let there be light" with it's shrill blips and reverbed bass is not as good as I remember. Despite the near-vocal synth tones that sound very similar to Daft Punk making for a nice ending to the track, it wasn't worth the slog through the rest to get to it. "D.A.N.C.E" and "NewJack" are as I remember them; fun electronic tracks with lyrical samples that fit perfectly. Both still very listenable to this day, which is great. Both parts of "Phantom" had their moments, but ultimately felt forgettable, as did "Valentine". In the past, I don't think I appreciated "TThhEe PPaARRtTYY" because of it's vocals, but now I feel as though more Justice songs should feature lyrics, as their sound (much like Daft Punk's before them) seems to thrive most when the eletronica supports vocals. For the same reason, "DVNO" is equally punchy; the change up from female to male vocals was also fun with the two tracks back to back. Whilst I understand the artistic value behind "Stress" being to generate just that with it's sound and video, it makes for tough listening as something to be enjoyed casually rather than something to be engaged with as an artistic experience. I am in two minds about this track: to dismiss it as a dumb inclusion on the album -or- to appreciate their attempt to do something different to what nearly every other artist does. "Waters of Nazareth" did nothing me, but "One Minute to Midnight" did and I'm struggling to put into words why this is. It's possibly the "darker" vibe of the beat in the latter that's having an impact, as I reminded of later stages in retro video games leading up to the final boss with this track. Overall, it's more hit and miss for me; a common theme throughout this journey it seems. I would do well to try and isolate why exactly this is, as quite a few albums fit this description now.

Good album.

From the very first note, this album felt familiar. I looked it up and found that Justice had collaborated with The Weeknd on “Wake Me Up,” which helped set the tone right away. The album then opened the door to a sequence of solid electronic tracks. It’s energetic, well-produced, and consistently engaging, though it does feel a bit padded at times. Overall, I found it enjoyable. I liked "Genesis" and "Waters of Nazareth".

Big nostalgia men litt for spaced. Alt burde vært D.A.N.C.E

Classic, I used to enjoy this album way more than I do now…still appreciate it

It's fine. Low rent Daft Punk

Strange, and had some positive points, but mostly just odd.

I'm not a huge electronic music fan, but thought this was a decent album

good loud , grungy, dancey noise

Danceeee

Ah, 2007

Some great tracks

fine dance stuff

Good dance pop electronics with a bit of edge to them. Favorite track: Genesis

Lots of familiar songs. Did not realise they were by this band. Enjoyable album

Another one not what I was expecting. The cover made me brace for heavy metal but it was heavy synth. Liked it

Never heard of this artist before this list. As EDM goes it did not annoy the sh#t out of me and that is saying a lot. D.A.N.C.E. is pretty great.

Cool I don't think it aged amazing

This was something I'd probably enjoy a bit more not through my headphones but quite fun electronic music. I had no idea that this artist was so popular.

If this was in the club then sure. Unfortunately I don't think music with this sort of high energy fun dance vibe works amazingly unless being played through a loud speaker with good bass- and I was listening to this in my headphones while trying to do maths so...

Surprised myself by really enjoying this.

I love a bit of heavy dance music and I love quite a lot of this. The heavy bass line cooks, but the tinny choice of top end sounds burned into my ears. I tried both on boombox and headphones and it makes no difference, it just hurts in places. The kids on "D.A.N.C.E." in particular are grating - that's a skip. Actually this album got better the longer it went. I've added it to my list of re-listens, but for now it's a 3.

Very solid choice of sounds, which provides a wonderful structure. Bolder than I remembered. With electronic music, I think my usual lack of feeling impressed comes from the sounds chosen and what feels like a locked standard of comfortability. I wasn’t blown away from start to finish but I did hold on to the texture from this album more often than not. I wish there was an even greater sense of movement, but I did enjoy a good number of the locations that were honed in on. A fairly airtight album, that I wanted to see continue with its boldness. Faves: D.A.N.C.E., TTHHEE PPAARRTTYY, Phantom

Warble

Cross as in mad? Angry Daft Punk. D.A.N.C.E. ✅✅✅

There were some jams on here

good vibes

started pretty strong, ended not as strong. Still decent.

Great electro album Song I like: D.A.N.C.E, Stress,

ahhh its instumental not fully. I only liked their instrumntals

Extra kudos for being an engaging listen despite the absence of any lyrics. A record that helped define “cool” in the 2000s.

Meh, kinda cool. I liked it here and there.

So this is supposed to be a modern classic for French House? I don't think its any better than Daft Punk's albums. There are certainly good songs on this album, I really liked D.A.N.C.E, Phantom pt 2, and One Minute to Midnight, but the rest was just okay dance music. I think it'd worth a listen for the good songs, but I can't give this more than a 3.

used to like this album a lot more. actually I think this makes the first album on the list I can say I had already listened to the whole way through, or at least that was already familiar to me. I had listened to it a lot at the gym in the first half of last year and because of that Justice actually scored a distant fourth place of top artists on my spotify wrapped. on a critical revisit during which I’m not super amped up (like I would be while lifting), the album falters quite a lot. It often lacks the virtuosity or variety that should bolster such heavy-handed ideas. At times it’s great (especially the last three songs), but in this album Justice tries to sound bigger, more important, and cooler than they really are. DVNO sucks ass

Was familiar with a couple of the songs prior to listening. Pretty good album overall.

I’m quite tempted to call this Poundland Daft Punk but it did have some good moments. I enjoyed a lot of the grooves but found lots of things quite formulaic and predictable. A well-placed “clap-clap” can be quite satisfying in an ironic-electro-cheese kinda way but when it appears every sixteenth beat it gets a bit tiring. Definitely took a page out of Underworld’s book, which is ok in my eyes but would like to have heard a few more original ideas.

Quite refreshing, although not my usual choice of music; really good when one wants to listen to something in the background while being productive :)

Similar to daft punk. Genesis smacks actually. Not sure why DANCE was more trendy (upon ready reviews it is because of Michael Jackson). No lyrics, so more so just rave music. Not my everyday type of music, it catchy just not for me.

Svårt. Pepp på nyår = magiskt. Trött på nyårsdagen = skona mig. Nostalgi? 100%.

Nobody does quirky, off beat electronica quite like the French. You can trace a direct line from Jean-Michelle Jarre to Daft Punk via Air to this album, and it’s a lot of fun. It’s described as an Opera Disco album, which if nothing else makes for a unique genre crossover. As you might expect it features a lot of sampling, including over 400 “micro-samples“ supposedly too short to be identifiable - take that, copyright lawyers! I know that at least a couple of these tracks will be going into my dance music playlists on a regular basis. Put on your best stripy jumper and beret, light up an ironic Galloise and give it a spin! Frog-tastic!

Beats were funky af

This is an interesting experiment. Maybe it works sometimes, maybe it is ... kind of different. I don't know. I did not hate it. You sense the vibes of Queen sometimes, but so totally different, so much more electronic (which I like). I guess I don't know what to think in a way. Interesting to be sure...

Actually listened to this for the first time a few weeks ago, it was okay, nothing too special, and played it very safe within the genre

3.3 stars rounded down.

I could see this being a favorite of mine but in practice it just isnt. Im not sure what it is but it has alot of things I do like. Its kinda heavy and grimey at times. It has some quick tempo on occasion. It just doesnt do very much for me. Its good but not really for me. Maybe if I gave it some more time I would get it but so far I dont see the appeal for myself. I can easily see this being some random friends favorite record. Just not for me I guess.

Some fun electronic stuff. Some not. Probably go elsewhere if I'm in the mood for this.

I don't love it, I don't hate it. I like how all of Justice's album covers follow a similar format to cross though. No particular songs jump out to me, but "D.A.N.C.E" is pretty good. I think I prefer Justice's remixes to their own songs though.

You know what, hell yeah!

I get why Cross became a big deal. It’s bold, stylish, and packed with the kind of distorted electro-funk that must have blown the doors off clubs in the late 2000s. There’s a fun, crunchy swagger to the production, and some of the grooves flirt with being genuinely funky. But as much as I respect the creativity and the energy, this isn’t fully my lane. The blown-out synths and maximalist textures wear on me after a while, and I don’t feel the same pull to come back to it that I get with records I truly love. It’s fun in the moment, sure, but it’s not something I see myself returning to often. Bottom line: notable, occasionally thrilling, ultimately not essential for me. A solid three

some fun tunes at first but got increasingly annoying

It’s not for me but I get why it’s here

I've only heard "D.A.N.C.E" from this album and "Neverender" feat. Tame Impala. I very rarely listen to this kind of music, but I actually like it and it was interesting. If I were a fan of the genre, I'd probably rate it even higher. Still, 3/5 —————————————— Liked: — Genesis — Stress — Waters of Nazareth

J aime pas trop le bruit

alright

6.5/10 Exciting, but not always pleasant to listen to. Very strong start, but overstays it's welcome a bit. Highlights: Let There Be Light Genesis DANCE

New to me. This style of Electronica isn’t my favorite but I like some of the album.

I didn’t really get on with this when it came out, thinking they were less refined Daft Punk and less weird Mr. Oizo. In time I’ve come to appreciate the construction of the tracks and while I wouldn't think of listening to the album in full there are enough stand out tracks to warrant a listen once in a while.

Shows we've found something the French won't run from... Funky dance beats! Album started off so well, Genesis into Let There Be Light was fantastic and any album that starts with a smooth transition between songs already wins in my book. However the album starts to get weaker and fall more apart further on and the lyrical songs are just down right not good (The Party is an objectively bad song if I've ever heard one) Phantom II and Stress pick things up in the mid to late album but it's just a bit inconsistent. I did genuinely enjoy my listen and it's an album eveyone should try but those lyrical songs really detract from the overall album.

another one of those “i have heard better NOW” albums that just don’t feel that significant to me TODAY. But, it was still a fun listen

French people make good electronic dance music. It’s not particularly a genre I want to sit and listen to for half an hour, but if I have to, this is quality.

It wasn't what I expected based on the cover. It's actually an album you can listen to.

Noisy nostalgia

Didn’t hate it, even the songs with vocals were decent.

Dance music, fine in the club but not much.

Good stuff. I forgot to buy this in Paris.

started off fun but by the end i was soooo tired of it

I am generally not into electronic dance music but this felt a little different. It was about the tempo - there was a groove to be found throughout the album, unlike the hyper paced 90s stuff. I dug this one - again the tempo and there were cool melodies throughout. I can’t give it four stars though.

When this album came out, and Ed Banger Records was pushing French electro house, (Cross) felt like a breath of fresh air. Justice really stood out in that scene with their gritty and abrasive style that brought in some rock influences. I also liked how they played with samples, like pulling from old trance tracks and bands like Devo, which gave it a fun edge. My only issue is that some tracks felt like filler, just there to connect the better songs.

Rougher daft punk

Silly fun

Phantom Pt II is the standout so far. Otherwise this album is good but not quite as refined or mature as their contemporaries Air and Daft Punk. A little aggressive in it's sonics for me, but I bet it works better in a club setting.

Some big, fat, fun beats, if you're in the mood. Diminishing returns through the album - it's overlong and there's weaker stuff in there, but when it's great, it's great. 3.5

Couple of bangers. Hadn’t listened to the whole thing before.

I found this album to be a little tough to get through. Something I'm learning about myself is that when the music feels repetitive I can find a whole album to be a bit of a slog. That said, any one song off this album was awesome! Especially D.A.N.C.E. - a song whose slightly off-key child vocals should have annoyed me but absolutely didn't. I'd listen to any of this again, just maybe not all at once.

electronic. FIne. not my flavor

I expected to like this, but I found it surprisingly abrasive (not in a good way). I decided to give it a second listen and found it less abrasive, but definitely not the kind of thing I can listen to on headphones while working. This is meant for rolling on molly in a giant club. Even then, "Newjack" would still sound schizophrenic.

Its a good sound

Kinda fun.

Heavy hitting beats and fun synth sounds, hyperactive songs full of ideas that're constantly changing and introducing new elements, textures, samples, and rhythms glitching in and out. Anytime there're vocals it drops way off though, very annoying inane stuff.

I've loved all of the French electronic albums I've gotten on this list, but this one was just okay.

Not really my cup of tea but credit where credit is due- this is one of the more enjoyable electronic albums I’ve listened to. There’s a good amount of musical variety here that I feel like most similar projects lack

I dig it, good road trip music

Not bad
