I love the drummer but this album is honestly meh. Sounds like standard non-descript metal music
It’s hard for me to take seriously, when I listen, I keep seeing Spinal Tap in my head. Seems very goofy. They are not bad musicians and there is some really good guitar on here but this is just not for me. I understand if this kind of metal is something you are in to, this album would be one of the best.

No, this is nothing I will ever like. One or two songs made me give a "2" but it's more like 1.6
A second Megadeath album? Is this one going to break new ground that the last one didn't hoe? I somehow doubt it, but let's take this album for a spin and see what we've got. Yep, nope. It is fine, but not as good as Rust in Peace, definitely doesn't belong on this list. Title track is pretty great, though. On its own I might give it three stars, but in context as the second entry on this list of albums I allegedly have to hear, I'm inclined to be stingy.
Listened Before? Y This is kind of a mystery to me. I hope there's other Megadeth albums on this list because this one is fairly weak. It's okay, and it gets a bonus star just for not being some weird-ass world music but yikes. Many better choices for these guys. Just what I need this morning, shouty and angry with heavy guitar.
Megadeth is not in my wheelhouse. This is a difficult album to review from a technical or artistic standpoint when the music does not agree with my tastes. Overall I can see the measurement of where it ranks in the trash categories but it is just not for me.

I get how music can resonate, and if Metal did with me, I understand the deep and visceral connection one could have to it. But it does not hit me that way, so yet another 2 from me.
There’s so much potential here but in the end the majority of the album just lacks wit and style. And as a result there’s just not quite enough swing to do it for me. The best moments are mainly the first minute or so of Good Mourning/Black Friday, although there’s some interest in It Ain’t Superstitious. But otherwise it’s all a bit too shouty for my taste.

Yeah this is all very samey and I stick with just one song I did not care to listen to the lyrics, and I know how monumental this record is but other than the cool guitar riffs and shredding I could not get into this like I am gone here. 3/10 closer to a 4 than a 2
Thrash metal. Megadeth can certainly play their instruments at a high level, though I always think of this kind of music as "virtuosity for its own sake"(similar to some segments of modern jazz). There's no question the guitar and drum playing are technically very difficult but to what end? The lyrics and melodies are primitive at best, played extra loud with screaming vocals over the top -- I don't enjoy listening to it though I can acknowledge the skill required to produce it.
Enjoyed the album as much as I could for the headbanger stuff that it is. Good listen out BBQing on a Saturday.
Speedy riffs, solid vocals, and cool instrumentals. All of those yet it still came out a bit bland.
Meh. Updating my review from Rust In Peace: What I respect about metal, and this album: 1.) The musicianship. A lot of talented musicians with technical chops. The bassline in Peace Sells is awesome. 2.) I like complex compositions, so dig the tempo changes, odd time signatures, etc. 3.) Love the energy. Dig the shredding. What I dislike about metal, and this album: 1.) It all kind of sounds the same. 2.) Metal vocals. I don't enjoy the high-pitched wailing nor the low cookie-monster growl. Very little metal falls in between. His voice here isn't as wail-y as many, but still not a sound I enjoy. 3.) The lyrics/imagery. The constant same-y references. Just from this album: death, conjuring, the devil, flames, religious imagery, ashes, wizards, magicians, candles, black cats, burning, Mephisto, God, hell, execution, fear, darkness, evil, the grave, terminate, final judgment, haunts, killer, intruder, homicidal, bloodthirsty, demon, victims, meat, sinister, fiend, slaughter, lethal, pain, deviant, sadistic, convulse, agony, mangle, omen, sacrifice, master, fire, goat, blasphemy, etc. I mean it's just absolutely freaking exhausting in its repetitiveness. So, in general, metal bores me. As a non-metal fan I was able to make it through this album, so that's saying something.

Some good stuff but too intense for me
I have to come back to this one. I wasn’t in the mood for it yesterday (or today) and I can’t give it a useful review. I can tell the musicians have technical talent. But none of the songs caught my ear. Unless I was missing something, there is no songwriting talent here.
Sort of apocalypse horror metal. Sounds alright but still scores low for me as I just didn't really jibe with it

Title track is a banger. But the rest of the album is kind of flat. Heroin use/abuse was a factor but I also think Chris Poland wasn't the right fit for the band. This album needed Marty Friedman who is a superior guitarist. Still don't care for Dave Mustaine.
This is just noises to me. I like some other Megadeth stuff but that lead guitar just doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason to it.

It’s ok metal, never really been a fan of Megadeth. Mustaine’s voice detracts, the music itself seems very automatic. I get there place in metal history, but currently a 2/5 for me.

I’m not sure this album was supposed to make me laugh so much but it did. Maybe it reminded me of Strongbad from Homestar Runner’s reverence for “de wicked guitar solos, meeebly meeebly meeebly” or maybe it was the crazy energy and gravel voices that just cracked me up. I’d never listened to a Megadeth album before. I expected to hate it. It ended up being memorable but I’m not qualified to render much opinion on its musical genius. It was still light years better than Tim Buckley.

It's just not for me. Couldn't get through the back half of all the live tracks but it didn't feel like I was missing anything. The album art is pretty rad though.
It’s crazy how a band like Black Sabbath still sounds fresh today, while this newer album sounds very dated. I find a lot of thrash metal songs indistinct from each other and cannot connect with them.

Too fast too loud too many arpeggiated guitar solos. My head hurts. I think I just don't like generic heavy metal.
I like metal, but the "thrash" flavour always felt a little bit as if it was simply to try and play as fast as possible. Where's the emotion? The occasional soaring vocal?
Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for metal but this one just didn't do it for me today.

As expected, a technically impressive performance but to be just bleeds together into a wall of bass drum and impresively fast guitar scales without melody.
I don’t think this is for me. For some reason I found the entirety of this album an irritant. Mustaines voice is just never able to elevate the material for me. I find it more grating rather than great.
Wasn't a fan of the album. Mainly, it wasn't my taste in music. The drumming was fantastic and everything fit together well. The lyrics and voice of the singer were a little underwhelming.
It's all technical. You need a little more than repeating the song title to make a chorus.

Always a step beyond Metallica and acceptable metal for me, gave it a listen and...still not for me
I wasn't a big fan of the 'Rust in Peace' Megadeth album we heard recently. Though 'Devils Island' stood out as a pretty cool song, the rest just all molded together in a bad way. Can't remember a single song. I think I've grown quite tired of Megadeth already just after 2 albums.
OK but gets old really quickly.
Ughh...more thrashy, screamy. Not a fan. I can appreciate the guitar and drum work but that is about it.

It was ok kind of just washed over me
It’s hard to take this genre serious for me. Far far too many cliches: from boring solos, to terrible puns and awful lyrics. But it’s alright for what it is. Not my cuppa tea, cant see it pursuading me to go back to this genre or even to this record. Just a standard metal album for me. Not very original, not very offensive. A custard cream of a record. Points reduced for corniness.
Never actually listened to Megadeth but they have the perfect over the top heavy metal band name so feel like I've always been aware of them. It's largely Metallica-y heavy metal but not at the same level. Didn't completely hate it but won't be going back.
Didn't do a lot for me but I didn't hate it. I found it vastly inferior to Master of Puppets, which I think is a similar genre. Megadeath's lyrics here are a bit daft.

When I hear Megadeth, I can't help but imagine this the house band for Tales from the Crypt. With the Crypt Keeper as the singer, in front of a zombie bass player, a mummy guitar player, and the swamp monster as the drummer. My mental image is just too cheesy and over the top to take this seriously.
Metal generally doesn’t do a whole lot for me, but I’ll admit that the guitar riffs sound complex and technically well-executed. So, points for that. Standout: Good Mourning / Black Friday. 2/5.

Só que para mim fica sempre a sensação de falta a originalidade do Metallica para ampliar melodias impactantes no peso do metal.

I let out an audible groan when I saw another metal album pop up this morning. However, it wasn't as bad as I expected, these guys can seriously thrash and shred their instruments and the vocals weren't as obnoxious as some other bands out there. The cover is typical metal though, cliched and dated. I definitely won't be seeking this out to play on my own, but I'll give a slight nod for their talent.
Mustaine is one of the most gifted technical guitarists in the world, but this is really kind of a snoozer of an album.

Its megadeth, and yet they still sound like any speed/trash metall band in the 80s
In 1986-7 I was in year 10-11, and I remember guys with “Megadeth kicks Metallica’s ass” on their pencil cases (or something to that effect). At the time I had no interest. Later, I became one of the “Black Album converts”, saw the doco “Some Kind of Monster” in the early 2000s, and have loosely followed Metallica’s journey ever since. But I never really got into their early stuff as much, nor Megadeth. Why all this about Metallica? Because Dave Mustaine’s whole thing, at least at that time, seems to have been to prove he could play faster, “heavier” and cleverer than the band that kicked him out. Listening more seriously to this album now, I’d have to say that “objectively” he may have succeeded in all three (not so sure about the second, but then he had a low bar at the time - Metallica’s later slower stuff is much heavier than any of the speed/thrash stuff, which is partly the fault of the recording but also a necessary corollary of playing too many notes too fast - just ask Mozart’s critics). But somehow Megadeths’s riffs, the songs , the arrangements appeal to me even less than their counterparts on Master of Puppets etc. It’s as if Megadeth have succeeded in doing even more of what I like less about early Metallica. To put it another way, this album just doesn’t make me want to bang my head, let alone to come back for a closer listen to the (apparently) socially conscious lyrics (which perhaps someone should have told my 16 yo self about).
Not my bag at all, but I guess they’re good at what they do. There’s some tasty guitar & the production’s good. I quite enjoyed Peace Sells & I Ain’t Superstitious. Otherwise, all a bit generic.
This is probably one of the best examples of mid-80s thrash metal recorded (especially given that Metallica's 80s albums often suffered from pretty shitty production and mixing). It is hard to think how they could have improved this within the confines of the genre; the playing is super tight, the lead lines are lightening fast, Mustaine's lyrics are suitably nasty and sung with the appropriate sneer. It really is perfectly done for what it is. The band is clearly incredibly well rehearsed and super-tight (despite the ongoing heroin issues for half the band). The album even benefits from being recorded cheaply and a bit roughly (on an independent budget), but with a major label coming in with some better money for a really good mix and mastering. The tracks have enough roughness to make them compelling, and a sense of immediacy and danger (with minimal overdubbing, editing or click-tracking), but enough work to make sure the album doesn't sound like it was recorded with tin cans and string (as with many 80s metal records). Comparing the original Randy Burns mixes on the deluxe edition shows the improvement this mix and mastering made). Mustaine clearly set out to produce the ultimate metal album (for the time); faster, tighter, heavier, meaner and better sounding than any of his contemporaries (especially Metallica), and I think he succeeded at that. But, apart from the title track (which I would happily put on a metal playlist any time), the rest of it is a bit mechanical. The guitar solos are particular problem for me; they are lightening fast and technically proficient, but it just seems like typing to me. And Mustaine's sneering vocals wear on me after a while. My mate Tim and I listened to quite a bit of thrash around this period (mostly local Sydney bands, like the Hard-Ons), and so this wasn't completely out of my wheelhouse when I was 17 (which would be the perfect age for this), and I am pretty sure I was aware of this record, but it didn't connect with me then and it doesn't connect with me now. I can appreciate it, but I just doesn't move me.

I think that this album is the first time I've heard a whole track from Megadeth. I was aware of the band, and could tell you that Dave Mustaine is in that band, but that's about it. I did not enjoy Peace Sells...But Who's Buying. I don't understand lots of Heavy Metal, lyrically or musically.
You can't convince me that this isn't about Dave Mustaine's war with Men's Wearhouse.

Would obviously be better without Dave Mustaine's voice or guitar tone. And no amount of remastering in the world can save this from sounding like it was recorded in his shower.
I was never a big fan of Metadeth or speed/thrash metal growing up, so I wasn’t looking forward to this one to be honest. After listening to it, I actually didn’t despise it as much as I thought I would. A few of the songs were more the type of heavy metal that I like than I expected. If you took the best 8 or so songs from the album, I’d probably give it 3 stars. However, it was 21 songs and 90 minutes long. Because of that, it was a slog to get through all of the thrash metal I don’t typically like, so I had to give it 2 stars.

I was going to say something charitable about needing to understand the vernacular in order to get what the band is saying...then I remembered that for a while, I actually liked this sort of thing. Thrash wasn't ever an explicitly political stance, much more reactionary pose. Mind you, this was 1986. "Morning in America" and all that self-serving horseshit. One can excuse reactionary impulses. My sense is that outrage is worthless unless tempered and targeted usefully. And that takes a lot of work. This album is brimful with enthusiasm, a little short on reflection, and wouldn't have done more than preach to a niche band of coverts.
Not what I usually listen to, but, at the right time…this could be a great listen. Above average for the genre. 2.5/5

again, not very mega, not very dethy. fairly generic metal really. i got to the 8th track and i genuinely thought i would be on the last track as it felt like i'd been listening to it all day. that bascially translates to it all sounds the same.
Repeating myself...thrash is not my thing so maybe there's something to this that I don't see. But I do enjoy Megadeth's 90s output and so this felt like an odd pick over their other albums. The later 3 tracks finished strong though.

Peace Sells . . . But Who’s Buying? by Megadeth (1986) Well, this is grim. From the relatively innocuous tale of a guy trying to get away with cheating on his homicidal lover (the opening track “Wake Up Dead”) to the death-embracing musings of a guy playing Russian Roulette (the closing track “My Last Words”), we are treated to Satanic celebrations (“The Conjuring”, “Bad Omen”), a paean to murderously sadistic gore (“Good Mourning/Black Friday”) and other misanthropic delectations. This album lacks the honest vitality of Iron Maiden, the serious and mesmerizing darkness of Jane’s Addiction, and the musicality of Metallica. With finely executed and elaborate guitar runs, power chords, heavy bass lines, wild drum stylings, snarly (but weak) vocals, and fast paced tempos, Megadeth delivers prototypically extreme metal. Give them credit for having their scales and beats down cold. And they play well together. But the music lacks any feeling other than rage. Except for the rocking “I Ain’t Superstitious”, it’s entirely one dimensional. Overall, the album’s lack of subtlety is numbing. Boring, even. The title track “Peace Sells” might be considered the highlight of the album, variously described as ‘politically oriented’, ‘socially aware’, and ‘topical’, but it is none of these. The concept is merely a naked rip-off of a line from an article in (the notoriously conservative!) Reader’s Digest: “Peace Would Sell But No One Would Buy It”. If this song is, as reputed, Megadeth’s signature piece, the signature is forged. And its message makes no sense. It has nothing to do with the war/peace dichotomy. It’s all about the self-justification of an atheistic, deadbeat, mean-spirited, and unambitious lowlife. The only thing going for this song is the opening bass riff. The opening instrumental of “Good Mourning/Black Friday” and the intro to “My Last Words” are nice, but they don’t come close to redeeming this quintessentially anti-redemptive record. 2/5

The guitars are pretty awesome, and it's indeed what you'd want in a thrash metal album, but I did not enjoy this as much as "Rust in Peace." It's just not quite as interesting to me.
This is not the first Megadeth album that I have listened to, but this was the first listen for this album. I didn’t discover anything new about Megadeth with this album. Lots of fast guitar runs and rapid drum beats, then some yell-fashioned lyrics and there you have it. Just not for me really…and I spent the day on a home project pouring some concrete and my back is sore, so I am hard to impress right now.
They've got volume and speed if you like that sort of thing. I'm finding that I need more...a poetic lyric here and there, a melody, a hook, a groove. I've tried keeping an open mind and looking for things to like but I think I'm ready to say that thrash metal just isn't for me.
I expected to hate this a lot more than I did, but I still don't think thrash is my genre of metal. Impressive guitar skills though!

Dave Mustaine is a complete moron and giant asshole. Doesn't matter to the music but it needed to be said. onward... I wasn't too excited for this - I was very into hard rock in the 80s but the heaviest never appealed to me - I was a big Iron Maiden fan but their appeal was due to their melody and anthemic songs. Knowing Megadeth was an offshoot of Metallica (a band I've never liked) and in the thrash metal vein I'm not sure I ever explicitly listened to them, outside of the random video or someone else playing them. After the first song honestly the music is kind of cool in parts, but I'm definitely turned off by the growly vocals. And especially where Dave Mustaine sounds like James Hetfield is a big turn-off. "Peace Sells" is a fun throwback as that opening bass riff was the theme for MTV news back in the early 90s :) and "My Last Words" is frenetic in an early-Maiden kind of way, that's one I don't mind at all. But this is definitely not for everyone, and not really for me - "The Conjuring" is a good example of what I had expected: incredibly fast and precise thrashing, double kick-drums on display, quick tempo pivoting - really talented playing and musicianship. Overall not much constructive to say from my standpoint - I like it better than Metallica (low bar) and I can see why people would like this but I can't get into it. 3/10 2 stars
"We'll see when the other metal bands come up on the list, but I think Anthrax just isn't that good." Which takes us to the first of the "Big 4" metal bands to come up since that disappointing day we received Anthrax in late July. And what's the verdict? Megadeth's "Peace Sells..." is better than Anthrax. Though of course, that's not saying much. I don't like Dave Mustaine's vocals. I also don't completely hate them? Some of the guitar playing stands out as different than what I expect from 80s thrash metal, such as on "I Ain't Superstitious." There were also a few tracks with some segments that sounded a bit proggy. None of this saves it. **, and only to distinguish it from Anthrax and Sepultura.

Is it the most annoying thrash metal album on this list? No. I guess that is good enough for the extra star.
Ultimately there are two Achilles heals for this album: 1) the lead singer’s voice is not great and most importantly 2) the musical arrangements are undisciplined. It’s very clear that there is ample musical talent here: thumping bass lines and shredding guitars abound. As I’ve complained for enough times in these first 95 albums, Megadeth (like the others) does not know when to rein it in. Far too many times they try to cram as many musical notes in as possible without realizing less is more. Some of these guitar riffs are great…head bang all day and bounce around in the pit. Hell yeah! But the lead guitar is over indulgent…ALOT. It’s the opposite of gluttonous actually…instead of consuming too much, a plethora is produced. If only Megadeth would have known that a 4 oz filet mignon with a side of mashed potatoes is vastly more appealing than the unlimited trips to the Golden Corral buffet they gave us. It’s a pity really. A seasoned producer should have told them to dial it back a thousand notches. A magnificent album could have resulted. Additionally, the lead singer alone knocks them down a 🌟 .

Wore thin pretty quick with me. I gravitate more towards doom/sludge than thrash when it comes to metal.
Me ha gustado más por lo que me recuerda que por lo que es. Tendrá sus seguidores pero a mi me ha sonado a Metallica y algunas veces como Soundgarden en sus primeros discos. Para mí es prescindible pero se deja oir. El Death Metal ya no me asusta.
Not too much of a thrash metal fan, disclaimer. Album started off ok but beyond the first three songs, there was nothing appealing for me.

Tämän levyn perusteella ei kyllä tarvitse jatkossakaan kuunnella, ei oikein iskenyt tämä tasapaksu surina. Peace sellsissä oli hyvä bassotiluttelu alussa, mutta pettymys oli silti.

I started out excited to listen to some hard rock, and by the second song I was ready for a change of pace. Idk if this album just caught me in the wrong mood, or if I never knew I didn't like thrash metal. And I'll say there were one or two REALLY nice solos in hidden in here, but that wasn't enough to change my mind on the whole album.
Heavy metal music, real life heavy metal music. It's okay.

Back to back albums with ellipses in the title. If it's good enough for Louis-Ferdinand Celine, it's good enough for Megadeath and Britney. Other than that, and a 1'star rating, the two albums didn't have too much in common.

I’m utterly agnostic about this LP, which is not terrible enough to be among the very worst of the one stars and not interesting enough to be towards the top of the one star list. It is like there is literally nothing there. One star. Tom.

The metal music was invented but lyrics of death, satanic rituals, murder and celebrating Russian roulette (memories of those scenes from “The Deer Hunter” which I saw opening night) were too much for me.
On a song to song basis, each of these is merely annoying. I can tolerate (not enjoy) each track on its own. As a full album, though, this becomes interminable for me.
Better than slipknot?
I tried, i really tried. I love some metal but not this metal. It was good to hear a talented rhythm guitarist under all the noodling. And some if the lyrics were quite funny. But mostly rubbish and the disc 2 live version was really facking awful

couple thoughts about megadeth: Dave Mustaine is such an asshole that even Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield couldn’t put up with him. Lars Ulrich! babies are born knowing how to cry and that Lars Ulrich is a complete asshole. how bad must Mustaine be? (pretty bad man) back in 1999 or so for reasons I don’t remember I bought whichever Megadeth album had the song Crush ‘Em. Bad song, bad album, but it came with this huge CD sampler full of songs by 20-some other bands. That sampler got me deeper into Type O Negative, a band I’d be giving so many fives if this ridiculous list included them, and introduced me to System of a Down. (Also Puya, Full Devil Jacket, and to a much much lesser extent Chevelle) At any rate Type O Negative rules and if I had to pick one of their albums for the list it would probably be October Rust even though it would more likely be Bloody Kisses Megadeth sucks

Prefer my metal slower, more melodic, and less... thrashy, maybe? That said I'm on the intro to Good Mourning right now and I'm jelling with this. Okay, now it's super fast again and I'm like, ow, headache. I think this is just very not for me.

This is what people who hate Metallica think Metallica sounds like. Metal is probably my lowest rated genre here. But I do like metal, it is just that most of the metal on this list sucks.
The voice sounds exactly like you'd expect that skeleton on the album art to sound. Mostly guitar chugging bullshit.
As albums go in general, this is not worth mentioning or even considering. As heavy metal goes, this is just meh.

fast drum beats combined with the generic heavy guitar riff into generic guitar solo accompanied with generic heavy voice talking about the devil to sound hard - rinse repeat times 8. I am sure it is a fantastic album for people who like this sort of thing, but not for me. 1 star

Je vais rabouter les mots d'un grand d'ici pour commenter: Megadeth, pour moi c'est méga non pentoute. Pas capable de finir l'album, pour une seconde fois dans l'expérience à date, avec le truc drum and bass. La voix du chanteur est giga agressante, les riffs et les solos me semblent convenus. Et je ne suis pas dans un mood trash metal pour 2 cents en ce moment.

I just don’t like metal and I dont listen to eat with a discerning ear. It was a chore to listen to this man… idk I’m just a square
80s metal is so far from my wheelhouse it may as well be astrophysics. There's just so. Much. Guitar. Waves and waves of it. All the trickery unleashed in one song. There's a coherence in there somewhere but I can't with lyrics about summoning the devil and then sitting through 10 snarling guitar solos. I'm doing my due diligence and giving each song a minute but it all sounds the same - the tempo never changes, the Guitars are unrelenting. As someone who went to a Guns n Roses concert and sat barfing throughout most of it, I'm having great difficulty with this much ROCK.

Not as bad as the other metal stuff we've had... but did not enjoy. The only thing that was interesting was comparing the Burns mix to the Lani mix and getting an idea of the impact of the mix on the product; the latter sounded much better.
