Some nice power chords but I don't feel Megadeth are the way forward. Why does the lead singer not try to sing?
Actually surprised I didn’t like this one really, but it skews a bit too far into some style I don’t like. Feels a bit more cliche than some metal bands I like.
Here we are with another metal album. It's been a pretty good while since I last rolled one of these. About 60 - 70 albums, were I to take a guess. I've been indifferent to metal for the longest time, though I think this list is beginning to make my opinion sour. The albums I've heard thus far have been pretty gay and mentally stunted, with only a handful of good cuts interspersed between the ten or so albums I've listened to. I'll go into this one with an open mind, though I must admit that I'm feeling pretty reluctant. Yeah, it's more metal. This is pretty standard for the genre, though in all fairness I've never listened to a single metal album which has overstayed its welcome. I kneel, 35-minute runtime. Anyways, the guitar riffs are adept, Mustaine is a competent vocalist and some of the campy lyrics made me smile, though this album lost my attention pretty heavily during the second half. The songs blend together quite a bit, which I think is more of an intrinsic problem with the metal genre, rather than a problem with this album specifically. "The Conjuring" is a solid tune. Classic metal, with some decent guitar riffs. I appreciate the slower tempo when compared to most metal songs I've heard. "Good Mourning / Black Friday" is another solid cut. I appreciate the moodier, more subdued sound, and those guitar riffs are as adept as ever. Book time. Where the band found their footing, but that's about it. Wikipedia reveals that this is a "thrash metal classic", was influential in the creation of extreme metal and has a solid critic backing. I can't fault that, really. I cosign this inclusion.
Meh, i don't like the sound, especially the singer. The rhythm part is kind of fun, but actually boring.
Don't care
While the music was good, the singing was horrid.
Never liked this band. Decent riffs. Solos are all flash and no souls. Vocals and lyrics sound like AI trying to be a metal band. Ain't Superstitious... just an awful song. They sound like they agree. Pressured into this by the label?
Speed, ego, and attitude. Talented, but i just don’t find this sound enjoyable. A 2.
Some of the guitar music is the only good thing about this album, in my opinion.
Mukavaa tiluttelua! Poliittista metalliahan tämä on.
Yeah, it’s Megadeth. Still better than Metallica.
Highlight: Devil’s Island. In a nutshell: “go faster. We must go faster!” Ahhh yes. The band that formed as a “fuck you” to Metallica. As a non metal head, I know Megadeth is a band that’s important to metal cannon. Especially thrash metal. What stands out is the prowess of the band. Gar Samuelson on drums, Dave Muscatine and David Ellefson sharing guitar duties, Chris Poland on bass. Sometimes you are surprised by an intense riff, wild shreds or an enviable drum beat. Mustaine’s lead vocals are weaker compared to releases by contemporaries in the same year (eg Slayer’s Reign In Blood, Metallica’s Master of Puppets). To me, the vocals lack grunt. No oomph. The endurance is there but I feel nothing. Overall: 4/10

2 - Muy estridente para mi gusto
I was surprised that this wasn't harder. I enjoy bands like Judas Priest and Metallica quite a bit. I always thought this band was a lot heavier. Nothing terrible, nothing special. I'm not feeling particularly charitable tonight in that I'd listen to a lot of things before I'd give this another listen.
Ugh. I really can't stand Dave Mustaine's singing or lyrics.
Never been into this stuff.
nah
Apart from the peace sells bass line couldn’t be arsed with it
Not for me
Some unreal riffage but I cannot stand Mustaine's vocals
3/10 Rating is kind of irrelevant and unfair on this one because I couldn't get through it, it's just not my kind of music. Despite being a guitarist I've never been a big fan of shredding and even though I cranked this up to try and appreciate it how it's supposed to be listened to I decided it wasn't worth subjecting myself to the full album having got through the first few tracks which are apparently the most popular anyway. Feel like I can't really give it a 1 because I haven't listened to it all and there's definitely some musicality to it, I was tapping along to the bassline on Peace Sells at least Listens: 0.3
Great album for gardening to. Mowing the lawn specifically, with a Flymo. Made the job almost bearable. Less shit than Metallica imho.
Yeah, no.
There's some decent musicianship and shredding going on here. But the songs are lacking and Mustaine's vocal melodies and delivery have always been just OK. Not sure what gets people so excited about this band.
Way too long. God damn
Not really a Megadeth fan but this is good 80s metal. Peace Sells is stand out.
Why are there two megadeth albums? Music is fine. I’ve never thought much of Mustaine’s voice but it was extra terrible here. He’s kind of buried in the mix though which is fine.
Ehh. Didn’t care for it. Very silly.
Idiota, mas divertido. Uma pena que não empurre o genero mais.
Megadeth is a little… theatrical but after listening to that White Stripes album I’m so relieved to be listening to a competent drummer. I also enjoy how prominent the bass is in some songs. This is mostly not my thing but it’s fun in its own way.
Rating: 2.4 Yeah I get it you shred but can you do something to not put me to sleep?
Technical skill aside, something about their vibe feels like a schtick, wch I guess is fair enough -- all performers have stage personae -- but I guess I'm not buying.
This week has been all about heavy metal, and today’s challenge was Peace Sells... But Who’s Buying? by Megadeth. Honestly, the band and album title already sounded unappealing to me before I even pressed play. To be fair, there are flashes of talent here—particularly the guitar work. The intro to Good Morning/Black Friday is superb and shows real skill. But beyond that, I struggled to find much to enjoy. The songs all blended into one wall of noise, and the lyrics didn’t do anything for me either. I can imagine fans of the genre loving this, but it’s definitely not for me. Favourite track: Devil’s Island stood out the most, with some solid guitar work. Least favourite track: Honestly, most of the album—it felt repetitive, with weak lyrics and little variety. Album artwork: Pretty horrible.
not my style
Ive had a decent amount of metal in this list and i still dont really see the attraction. Mid tier musicianship wrapped in campy versions of satan and death and anger. It just seems so staged and performative compared to punk.

This is instrumentally good but I found it mostly unmemorable. Favorite track: "Bad Omen"
not for me
Not my type of Mizac
#110/1001. Lets see, I gave 1 star for the first Megaderh that popped up here and this one gets 2. Will that trend continue? Highly unlikely.
I will admit, the guitar work is super impressive. Metal just isn’t my thing though, this is like WWE to me. Full of too much testosterone for its own good
trash metal... maybe not the worst one
Some more killer metal guitar shredding from Megadeth. I can get down with this to an extent. It's high energy but repetitive so loses its appeal after a while. "Peace Sells" is top track with some good support. If drugs were a problem for these mad men must have been tons of cocaine or speed cause I can't see them raging on any depressants. Peace is cheaper than war so I'm buying at 2.48 stars.
#671. Metallica was made better by the lack of Dave Mustaine, and I'd be willing to bet money Megadeth would be better without Dave Mustaine as well. 2/5: nah
I'm sure Thrash Metal fans love this band, but it doesn't hit for me
Wouldn't listen to it anytime soon, but better than I expected
Liked parts of this, and the guitar playing is great. Cringe lyrics though, and not as good overall as Rust in Peace. Not really sure if we needed 2 Megadeath albums on this list.
Well now, was this what I expected? To be honest, no it wasn't! It was a lot more tuneful than I expected, and a lot tamer too. Unfortunately for them that doesn't mean better. It was ok, but not for me. I'm feeling generous for some reason so 2
More music than I expected.
Megadeath and all those ghastly 80's hair Thrash, denim, denim bands. They all had to have a shitty looking skeleton thing as a mascot. Truly appalling for a Goth like me at that time. Fast forward 39 years, and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. But that doesn't equate to being good or anything I would chose to listen to when hoovering.
megaDump
chug chug roar raaarrrr grrrr guess what im a fatass and im eating a cheesburger groooorrg chug chug chug Fav song: Wake Up Dead
Some grooves and wild guitar riffs but feels like second rate Metallica to me. That live second disk stunk.
Thrash metal really isn't my thing.
Man, the guitars go hard. No denying that. Some of the riffs are super impressive, tight, fast, and technical. All the stuff metalheads love. But the vocals and lyrics are straight cartoonish. Feels like watching a Saturday morning show where everyone's angry and has mullets. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - I Ain't Superstitious
Lekker dom en rechtdoorzee. Een beetje de Jethro Tull van jaren 80 metal. Een heel album is wel echt te lang.
"I hate the government" - 10 minute guitar solo. Dave Mustaine is an annoying loser and David Ellefson is a pedophile.
Like Rust in Peace this earns a two for some nice moments. But the propensity to thrash, thrash, thrash, undermines any burgeoning rock riffs, pumping the whole album with an effluent that's not unlike what those bastards Thames Water have been doing for 20 years to our beautiful streams. A two-scraper.
Metal’s just not for me. I really did try to loosen up and listen, but I think it’s just too heavy. I can definitely appreciate the musicianship and the guitarist shreds, but with all the noise, it gets too caught up in itself. The title track was probably the one I liked out of all of them, and each song had its moments, but I overall couldn’t enjoy listening to this album.
Very talented musicians. I just don't care for most heavy metal. The studio album is listenable. But, like a lot of live albums, this one is muddy.
I don’t really know Megadeth. My impression had always been some kind of bridge between 80s Thrash and 90s extreme metal. But a lot of this was more conventional heavy metal with some thrash bits, half Metallica, half Iron Maiden. Not my thing, only benefit was to remind me how far heavy music progressed in the next 10-15 years.
not my type of music usually.. but it is listenable to say the least? i dont particularly hate it nor do i love it
To this day I still don't understand why Dave sings... The instrumental part is amazing (a bit too progressive for my thrash taste), but the voice... i just can't. Sorry, Dave. Metallica is better
And who's buying this album... not me! I am not entirely against heavy metal as a genre, but is just something empty about the fews years between hair bands and grunge that feels more like the death rattle of metal than a step forward. Pass.
4/10
I think I'm just not a fan of this genre. If I had heard this in high school, I think I would have eaten it up. But thrash metal of this era just all sounds kind of cheesy to me. It's trying to be edgy and fast but it just hasn't aged well from my perspective. I do think that there is a more honest, political (almost punk) message underneath the lyrics in contrast to the superficial hair metal of the time. And I do think the playing is very technically proficient. The songs that stuck out to me were the title track "Peace Sells" (very recognizable bass intro...) and the last track "My Last Words". The rest of the songs just seemed to kind of blend together to my ear. Maybe it would be different if I relistened, took some time to adapt to it and the genre. But as it stands, this just isn't my thing.
I thought it was alright at first but I just didn’t like it. Not nearly as hard metal as I expected or wanted.
Lame if you ask me. Tries way too hard to be hard, and only succeeds in making music thats uninteresting to listen to. The opening track lyrics are so corny. 2.2/5
Meh
Didn’t care much for Rust In Peace, didn’t expect to like this much either.
A couple of alright songs, but Megadeth has never really been my thing. Good guitar work on a technical level.
It's loud, it's fast, it's repetitive, it's juvenile, it's head-banging pissed-off-white-boy music. No thanks - it's hard to distinguish where the tracks change.
This is unbelievably corny and pretty insubstantial. There are some nice melodies and cool moments with the guitars and a sense that the band aren't taking themselves very seriously anyway that I find kind of endearing: these elements make me think that maybe in another universe, one where I had ADHD or was angry at my Christian parents, I could have talked myself into liking what Megadeth is doing here. But this is not that universe, and I got very little out of this album other than an idea that maybe I'd have been on the side of the satanic panic after all.
I feel like I need a shower after listening to this. Unfortunately my resentment for heavy metal is so etched in my taste that I found it a real chore to listen to these songs with anything other than disdain. The aesthetic, the droning guitars, the screeching and often incoherent lyrics. I just hate it all so, so much. And yet: after giving the title track one last spin, I found myself smiling a little at how ridiculous it all was. Maybe I’m too conceited and self-serious to really enjoy what Megadeath are all about, and I don’t see my feelings towards these songs changing, but “rock on” I say to those who live for this stuff. ⭐️⭐️
I get it. I respect it. But I don't really wanna listen to it all the time. 2/5
Tough one. A couple of absolute bangers. Wake up dead and peace sells are fantastic. But other than that… it doesn’t keep me interested
I’m a guy who likes good hard rock n roll from time to time. This era of fast guitar tapping and screaming hair- children just doesn’t do it for me.
He doesn't sound constipated on this one so it gets an extra star.
Anstrenegend 2
Megadeth are surely the worst band on this list: stupid lyrics, horrible vocals and an overbearance of wailing guitar solos. Yet overall I didn't mind a few passages here in isolation.
2.5 stars. Meh, forgettable metal. Standout is "My Last Words".
Exactly what I expected. Bland metal. Samey riffs. Bah.
I don’t like being growled at. There is some interesting instrumentation in some of the songs but it just isn’t my thing.
I wish I had discovered this album when I was fourteen
Not a Megadeth guy — there’s a reason Dave Mustaine was kicked out of Metallica — I just find them way too cheesy, and I’m not really into this kind of thrash metal. It wasn’t objectively bad, just not my thing.
Still not
This was not really my genre, but it was alright. I didn't love it and the sound got very tiring after about halfway through. I wanted to like it more than I did. Two stars.
Oh per-lease.. This is hopeless. No use for anyone but incels and 13 year old boyz
There are aloy of things to like about this record and even this era as a whole. There is some good to great instrumental parts but it just feels too dated alot of the time. Things have progressed in the metal world in the last 40 years. Just feels quaint. And then my biggest sticking point... Dave Mustaine. His voice and alot of voices in the whole genre are so so terrible. They all suck. Even James Hatfield is awful, sneak peak at when they pop up. They just have the worst warbbly bullshit. I like off beat vocals alot but this is the worst. If I could give this a 2.5 idk if there is another album that I love half and hate half almost exactly. But those vocal put it down
I think the musicianship of metal is super great but I don’t like the genre always and I am NOT into the vocals here
Nfm
Big four metal only stuck around this long because it was so piviotal, and literally bridged the gap between Sabbath type blues and 90's melodic death metal. Without the contributions of some maniacs from Southern California in the late 70s, and early to mid 80s. Some of the classic moriffs of metal were built off the backs of big four contributions. But, they definitely don't hold up. Just like jazz. 1919-1929 era jazz is akin to this era of metal. It pushed the envelop so far that music was almost never the same. But on its own Megadeath's "Peace Sells" is primative and okay at best. But its harmonies are gnarly and possess some really tight grooves in the back.
Too much noise. The lyrics are pretty silly and while the guitar playing is excellent, it's really just playing fast for the sake of plying fast. An hour of this is way to much to take.
Hef aldrei hlustað áður, mun líklega ekki hlusta aftur, en þetta var svo sem ekki ferlegt. Dreg þetta ekki upp í þrist, en alveg solid tvistur ekki að mínum tónlistarsmekk.
1.5 hours of the same song but mildly diverting

# 422 : I don't love it, I don't hate it, It's not my kinda music, A heavy album that was pretty catchy and they're obviously skilled musicians, it just needed more production work… and less drugs!. Honourable mention: Peace Sells
I listened to the original album (eight tracks), not the re-releases with live versions. The album cover is good. The lead singer doesn’t have a great singing voice, but perhaps that’s not necessary for a heavy metal band. The songs have excellent guitar playing, but for me this too much heavy metal.
Well, I don't *like* the album cover, but it does look like a meme from Da Share Zone, so it has something going for it. Somehow I've avoided Megadeth until now. After listening, it turns out that was the right choice. But they honestly aren't that intense, just kinda... hard rock. I think I expected more growling. Either way, this much electric guitar is not for me. Not my scene! + Reading that the bass line from 'Peace Sells' (the song) was the intro to MTV news made me go "oh yeah!" but I don't think I would have noticed on my own. So, it's apparently not very distinctive (for me).
Nope!
Jud jud jud jud juuuuuuud biddle lee waaaaaaa
Pretty much every song starts with some epic guitar, then the lead singer opens his mouth and the whole song just devolves into nothing. Best song: Peace Sells
It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be
1986 teen me probably would have been really into this. But now it’s just too much aural assault on my ears. I appreciate it, but don’t enjoy it.
Proud of myself for listening to this one I mean, it is what it is
Not for me but I can appreciate some good thrash metal drumming
rock is blegh
Man, Mustaine really likes guitar riffs
Big meh.
Just like Slayer, this band is so far beneath Metallica. Boring... humdrum... repetitive.
im not here to hate, just saying that aint for me...
Superstitious is terrible. 2 parts thrash 1 part early glam rock. Vocals 75% suck.
Ok. Mal etwas härter.
This didn’t do much for me
slightly varying speeds of chuggas and growly lyrics about social issues. not interesting.
Big name, but no. I'm not really a metalhead, and I won't claim to like this kind of music. It's a bit unresting and annoying, just like most metal music to me, with some shallow aesthetics and annoying shouts and is filled with that...masculinity. The instrumentation is...fine? There are moments when I think they are too "neat," but overall, I enjoyed the instrumental parts. 2.5/5, I suppose, Megadeth and metal propaganda is on sale...but I'm not buying it.
Disregarding the fact that Dave Mustaine is a complete Dick, they are a bunch of solid metal musicians. It was a bit too much for me today, and eventually, the incessant shredding and dive bombs got very irritating. Perhaps I was in the wrong state of mind for this album today. On the plus side, I like their album artwork! Poor Dave - lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYQWzdPM6d4
Aina hymyilyttävän kämäistä ja helvetin teknistä samaan aikaan. Tykkäävät bluesista.
Not as bad as I thought it would be.
They are very skilled as musicians - That's the only reason I'm giving it a 2 instead pf 1 because this kind of metal music is a genre that I dislike so much. It's really not my thing.
I can barely understand the lyrics, and 90% of the music sounds the same.
Not good. Some cool guitar riffs, but I wouldn’t listen to this again. 2 stars
Every time I listen to this type of metal, I have the same thought - the music is fine and the lyrics and vocals are garbage. The speed, the technical abilities and changing dynamics of the guitar/drums/bass are overshadowed by just how inane the stories are about serial killers, satanic orgies, hexes, or whatever nonsense is being spewed for cheap shock value. My Last Words was a good song though despite it all. One extra star for that.
We've heard worse, but not a big fan of the genre.
I was not in a sympathetic headspace for music outside of my comfort zone. This album, however, did nothing to garner my attention nor sympathy. Most of it bored me, and the parts that did catch my attention only did so for their trite lyrics or flaccid instrumentation.
Every track sounds like a fight between a drum machine and a blender with lyrics that try to be deep but are somewhere between brooding teenager and a conspiracy theorist
You can keep megadeath, I don’t need it.
Decent guitar licks, Suuuuuper corny vocals. Overall while it tries to be angry and menacing, my takeaway is that it feels very cheesy, in keeping with a lot of the "heaviest" albums. However, these albums do tend to come with some legitimately tricky drum, bass and guitar parts which earns them some respect from me. Overall, just not my bag. I wasn't able to put together a top 3, because the vocals just took me so far out of each song, despite otherwise enticing instrumentation.
Not my style of music. The guitar riffs and drums, however, were good; which is what's preventing me from giving this album a one star.
It's 2024, Chat Pile has just released their second album, and here I am listening to old eighties thrash metal instead. The things this app makes us do... The thing is, as "dated" as Megadeath's style is (and as less impressive compared to Metallica's better LPs this album is overall), a few elements redeem *Peace Sells... But Who's Buying*'s expected overabundance of virtuoso-technical-feats-for-virtuoso-technical-feats-sake. They're *formulaic* elements, but sometimes formulaic elements work outside of the laboratory. The first elements are the use of descending scales for the first side. Except for the opener (which I'm not too fond of, and doesn't really use them), those descending scales can guide you through the whole thrash metal shebang in quite pleasant ways. The second is the atmospheric arpeggios used as introductions for most cuts on side 2. And the third is the presence of some indeed pretty imaginative ideas when it comes to the guitar solos, as cliché as they are. Compared to *Rust In Peace*, this record has less impressive production values, sure. But it may be a little more fun overall... The thing is... Is that album "essential" really? As in "must be listened to at least once in your life"? I'm not sure I'm really buying it. Maybe it's my bias against eighties metal. Ot maybe I'm just in a hurry to listen to Chat Pile instead. Even with that bias of mine in mind, metal is a genre that moves forward from the past very fast. Decades after, it's always pretty hard to decide what stuck the landing in the long run. 2/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums. 7/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 2). Number of albums left to review: 36 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 417 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 243 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 308 (including this one)
It’s alright if you’re into that kinda thing. Blended into one for me but I thought it was sort of…fun?
Ugh. So harsh. I know they're great musicians though.
Not really my kind of thing. Sounds like very technical guitar playing and I don't mind heavy rock, but a bit more melody would be nice
First listen Saved 3/8 Top track: Peace Sells
Megadeth, more like 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩 On a more serious note... It's not unlistenable, but there are so many better metal albums that I feel like this album is aspiring to be, I'd rather just listen to those
I knew the title track from an unfortunate night of playing Rock Band 2 years ago. At that time I loathed the song from hearing it so much, but eventually learned to like it. Now I finally listen to the album as a whole and it’s… fine. Most of the songs sound boringly same-y and unforgettable compared to one another. It’s nice to get to hear metal on the list, but there’s not nearly enough about this album to make me want to listen to it again.
a dude from my high school sounded like this guy. Anyways its aight. The voice gets annoying at times but the playing is good. If this is spinal tap was a real band maybe? Other metal I'd rather listen to for sure.
Like a lot of the influential metal and thrash albums I recognise that it’s an important and wildly popular genre but often it’s just not for me. This is too samey.
Decent metal, but not superior
"Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time"
Poor man’s Metallica
Not me...
This is not a great album. I'm not sure how it got onto this list. Especially as there are other Megadeth albums which are much better and more interesting.
Thrash. Thrash, Thrash, Thrash, Thrash, Thrash. - Melody? Songwrighting? Not so much. 2/5
WHATS UP‼️ WHAT THE FUCK IS UP DENNYS‼️‼️‼️ Favorite song: Devils Island Rating: 2.5/5
Not me. This is more accessible than I thought it might be - and a lot less screamy - but it doesn't have the ability to grab you like some of the Iron Maiden / Judas Priest / Metallica stuff that we've had. It's not bad, but it's not great either. Does descend into pure noise at points (although to be fair more on the bonus tracks), but it's mostly listenable but not particualrly inspiring. 2/5.
Had this in cassette back in ‘86. Wow, have my musical tastes changed (well I was 12 at the time)! Anyway, not as shred as I remember. Mustaine’s voice can be grating at times but wasn’t as bad as I remember, since it’s been almost 40 years since I listened to it. Liked it back then, but not so much today.
It was okay. Iron Maiden and Metallica are better. And Napalm Death too.
Un poco cansino. No es muy molesto a los oídos. Pero no me gusta.
I could not tell the difference between this and the prior Megadeth album tbh. Enjoyable, but very samey.
My husband says this is good, but I couldn’t wait for this guy to stop yelling at me.
I’ve heard of Megadeth and the Metallica connection but I have never heard a song by them prior to this. As far as Metal goes, not my favorite. There are some wicked moments but a moment doesn’t make a great track or album. “Good Mourning/Black Friday” and “I ain’t Superstitious” were the most interesting to me.
Interesting listen but idk I can’t really get into thrash metal. Maybe I would like Metallica or Slayer better.
Pleasantly surprised, not bad and brought a few memories back . Difficult to listen to more than 5 minutes though. I am just so not into this stuff any more
Too much filler. Not enough killer.
Like Megadeth more than Metallica but not a regular listen.
Not my thing.
Just noise. No rhythm. If it's your thing god luck.
OK album. I liked this a whole lot better than Metallica. It's got a better, indiosyncratic sound and stronger vocals/lyrics with all the typical metal stylings and technicality. I'm still not a huge metal fan. **
The guitars and drums were good on a couple of the songs. Overall it just wasn't my thing.
Boring af
I enjoy thrash as much as the next non-metalhead. But this album doesn't leave much of an impression. Megadeth is a rare band where I actually prefer the later albums. They made more memorable records after they refined their sound and stablized their "classic" lineup. For me, this is kind of a boring album from a band that would go on to make much better music.
Wake Up Dead 2.3 The Conjuring 2.4 Peace Sells 2.5 Devils Island 2.3 Good Morning/Black Friday 2 Bad Omen 2.2 I Ain't Superstitious 2.3 My Last Words 2.1 Score: 2.2625
I love the drummer but this album is honestly meh. Sounds like standard non-descript metal music
It’s hard for me to take seriously, when I listen, I keep seeing Spinal Tap in my head. Seems very goofy. They are not bad musicians and there is some really good guitar on here but this is just not for me. I understand if this kind of metal is something you are in to, this album would be one of the best.
Just… not my thing. 3/10
oh no! kinda good guitar spots maybe
Instantly forgettable.
Did not like this, I made it through 2 songs ... I don't do metal 2 stars
No, this is nothing I will ever like. One or two songs made me give a "2" but it's more like 1.6
A second Megadeath album? Is this one going to break new ground that the last one didn't hoe? I somehow doubt it, but let's take this album for a spin and see what we've got. Yep, nope. It is fine, but not as good as Rust in Peace, definitely doesn't belong on this list. Title track is pretty great, though. On its own I might give it three stars, but in context as the second entry on this list of albums I allegedly have to hear, I'm inclined to be stingy.
Listened Before? Y This is kind of a mystery to me. I hope there's other Megadeth albums on this list because this one is fairly weak. It's okay, and it gets a bonus star just for not being some weird-ass world music but yikes. Many better choices for these guys. Peace Sells is okay, but the rest feels disorganized and unpolished even for an early record. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Peace Sells
2.5
Just what I need this morning, shouty and angry with heavy guitar.
Megadeth is not in my wheelhouse. This is a difficult album to review from a technical or artistic standpoint when the music does not agree with my tastes. Overall I can see the measurement of where it ranks in the trash categories but it is just not for me.
The Randy Burns mixes go craaaazy
I’m not buying! this album
Not my cup of tea but didnt mind it 2.5
I get how music can resonate, and if Metal did with me, I understand the deep and visceral connection one could have to it. But it does not hit me that way, so yet another 2 from me.
There’s so much potential here but in the end the majority of the album just lacks wit and style. And as a result there’s just not quite enough swing to do it for me. The best moments are mainly the first minute or so of Good Mourning/Black Friday, although there’s some interest in It Ain’t Superstitious. But otherwise it’s all a bit too shouty for my taste.
Gigashite
Boooorrrinngggg. I like Rust in Peace way more.
downloaded song 1. listened to the rest and felt it mostly sounded the same. not bad for sure, probably wouldnt listen again by choice. wicked guitarz
My son likes this album but I do not. Too much thrumming in my head.
Good album but not my taste. Listened to it while waking my dog so prob not rhe best environment
Dollar store Metallica. I mean the music isn’t bad but the lyrics and vocals just don’t work for me. 🥇Peace Sells 🥈The Conjuring 🥉Good Mourning
Yeah this is all very samey and I stick with just one song I did not care to listen to the lyrics, and I know how monumental this record is but other than the cool guitar riffs and shredding I could not get into this like I am gone here. 3/10 closer to a 4 than a 2
Thrash metal. Megadeth can certainly play their instruments at a high level, though I always think of this kind of music as "virtuosity for its own sake"(similar to some segments of modern jazz). There's no question the guitar and drum playing are technically very difficult but to what end? The lyrics and melodies are primitive at best, played extra loud with screaming vocals over the top -- I don't enjoy listening to it though I can acknowledge the skill required to produce it.
Enjoyed the album as much as I could for the headbanger stuff that it is. Good listen out BBQing on a Saturday.
Speedy riffs, solid vocals, and cool instrumentals. All of those yet it still came out a bit bland.
Meh. Updating my review from Rust In Peace: What I respect about metal, and this album: 1.) The musicianship. A lot of talented musicians with technical chops. The bassline in Peace Sells is awesome. 2.) I like complex compositions, so dig the tempo changes, odd time signatures, etc. 3.) Love the energy. Dig the shredding. What I dislike about metal, and this album: 1.) It all kind of sounds the same. 2.) Metal vocals. I don't enjoy the high-pitched wailing nor the low cookie-monster growl. Very little metal falls in between. His voice here isn't as wail-y as many, but still not a sound I enjoy. 3.) The lyrics/imagery. The constant same-y references. Just from this album: death, conjuring, the devil, flames, religious imagery, ashes, wizards, magicians, candles, black cats, burning, Mephisto, God, hell, execution, fear, darkness, evil, the grave, terminate, final judgment, haunts, killer, intruder, homicidal, bloodthirsty, demon, victims, meat, sinister, fiend, slaughter, lethal, pain, deviant, sadistic, convulse, agony, mangle, omen, sacrifice, master, fire, goat, blasphemy, etc. I mean it's just absolutely freaking exhausting in its repetitiveness. So, in general, metal bores me. As a non-metal fan I was able to make it through this album, so that's saying something.
Too many notes
Some good stuff but too intense for me
I have to come back to this one. I wasn’t in the mood for it yesterday (or today) and I can’t give it a useful review. I can tell the musicians have technical talent. But none of the songs caught my ear. Unless I was missing something, there is no songwriting talent here.
Sort of apocalypse horror metal. Sounds alright but still scores low for me as I just didn't really jibe with it
2.5 Second Megadeath album on my journey and sadly it was not as good as the first. I am realizing there are parts of metal I appreciate though.
Album
I respect the wild solos but I'm just really not that in to thrash metal
Title track is a banger. But the rest of the album is kind of flat. Heroin use/abuse was a factor but I also think Chris Poland wasn't the right fit for the band. This album needed Marty Friedman who is a superior guitarist. Still don't care for Dave Mustaine.
This is just noises to me. I like some other Megadeth stuff but that lead guitar just doesn’t seem to have any rhyme or reason to it.
4/10 it’s just trying so hard to be edgy, but it comes across as soft and boring this genre is so boring to me, idk
It’s ok metal, never really been a fan of Megadeth. Mustaine’s voice detracts, the music itself seems very automatic. I get there place in metal history, but currently a 2/5 for me.
Stupid lowbrow rock. Inane lyrics, clichéd guitar riffs and just general nonsense.
That was an earhurter. I like music with a hard edge but that did not cut it. Familiar with the band by name but this might have been my first and last listen.
Meh.
The lead singer sounds like Goth Billy from grim adventures of billy and mandy.
I’m not sure this album was supposed to make me laugh so much but it did. Maybe it reminded me of Strongbad from Homestar Runner’s reverence for “de wicked guitar solos, meeebly meeebly meeebly” or maybe it was the crazy energy and gravel voices that just cracked me up. I’d never listened to a Megadeth album before. I expected to hate it. It ended up being memorable but I’m not qualified to render much opinion on its musical genius. It was still light years better than Tim Buckley.
Not a fan of this sort of power metal and fast guitar playing
This wasn’t necessarily offensive to my ears, I just didn’t enjoy it one bit.
powerful
There must be a better Megadeth album. 2/5
Thankfully it was only about 50 minutes. There wasn't too much screaming. Now need to revisit.
Svært at købe ind på, men hvis det endelig skal være såå
It's just not for me. Couldn't get through the back half of all the live tracks but it didn't feel like I was missing anything. The album art is pretty rad though.
It’s crazy how a band like Black Sabbath still sounds fresh today, while this newer album sounds very dated. I find a lot of thrash metal songs indistinct from each other and cannot connect with them.
deth
Never bought into Megadeth in the great Metallica war. They just sounded like generic period metal to me.
Ei mikään erikoinen
I can't listen to much of this. But if I liked thrash metal, this seems like it would be good.
No thanks lads
2/5
Too fast too loud too many arpeggiated guitar solos. My head hurts. I think I just don't like generic heavy metal.
I like metal, but the "thrash" flavour always felt a little bit as if it was simply to try and play as fast as possible. Where's the emotion? The occasional soaring vocal?
Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for metal but this one just didn't do it for me today.
Too extreme for me
As expected, a technically impressive performance but to be just bleeds together into a wall of bass drum and impresively fast guitar scales without melody.
I don’t think this is for me. For some reason I found the entirety of this album an irritant. Mustaines voice is just never able to elevate the material for me. I find it more grating rather than great.
Wasn't a fan of the album. Mainly, it wasn't my taste in music. The drumming was fantastic and everything fit together well. The lyrics and voice of the singer were a little underwhelming.
It's all technical. You need a little more than repeating the song title to make a chorus.
The (semi) title track is a banger, but overall I enjoyed this less than Rust in Peace. It's not as melodic or as much fun. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Peace Sells Date listened: 24/07/23
Always a step beyond Metallica and acceptable metal for me, gave it a listen and...still not for me
I wasn't a big fan of the 'Rust in Peace' Megadeth album we heard recently. Though 'Devils Island' stood out as a pretty cool song, the rest just all molded together in a bad way. Can't remember a single song. I think I've grown quite tired of Megadeth already just after 2 albums.
OK but gets old really quickly.
Ughh...more thrashy, screamy. Not a fan. I can appreciate the guitar and drum work but that is about it.
Aika paska kyl! 2/5
Ihan jees, mutta eipä oikein enää iske. Rust in Peace toimi muistaakseni tätä paremmin.
Nuorempana olis varmaan menny, 2/5
It was ok kind of just washed over me
It’s hard to take this genre serious for me. Far far too many cliches: from boring solos, to terrible puns and awful lyrics. But it’s alright for what it is. Not my cuppa tea, cant see it pursuading me to go back to this genre or even to this record. Just a standard metal album for me. Not very original, not very offensive. A custard cream of a record. Points reduced for corniness.
Never actually listened to Megadeth but they have the perfect over the top heavy metal band name so feel like I've always been aware of them. It's largely Metallica-y heavy metal but not at the same level. Didn't completely hate it but won't be going back.
Didn't do a lot for me but I didn't hate it. I found it vastly inferior to Master of Puppets, which I think is a similar genre. Megadeath's lyrics here are a bit daft.
Not my thing.
When I hear Megadeth, I can't help but imagine this the house band for Tales from the Crypt. With the Crypt Keeper as the singer, in front of a zombie bass player, a mummy guitar player, and the swamp monster as the drummer. My mental image is just too cheesy and over the top to take this seriously.
Metal generally doesn’t do a whole lot for me, but I’ll admit that the guitar riffs sound complex and technically well-executed. So, points for that. Standout: Good Mourning / Black Friday. 2/5.
Incredibly generic metal 2
Boring guitars
Fine but not my style
Meh. Meh-adeth. Even that failed attempt at a pun sucks.
1. Wake Up Dead: great riffs all round, style of singing aint my thing per se. 6.5/10 2. The Conjuring: pretty good, solid riffs. 6/10 3. Peace Sells: this one doesnt feel too special compared to the rest so far. 3/10 4. Devils Island: not really that great imo, pretty decent. 4/10 5. Good Mourning / Black Friday: These riffs go hard, song loses its power a bit at the end. 7/10 6. Bad Omen: again crazy opening riffs 7/10 7. I Ain't Superstitious: not that special for me 4.5/10 8. My Last Words: starts really strong but just loses my interest through the song. 5/10 Really talented band thats for sure, just not my thing
This isn’t my gig. I guess it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
I let out an audible groan when I saw another metal album pop up this morning. However, it wasn't as bad as I expected, these guys can seriously thrash and shred their instruments and the vocals weren't as obnoxious as some other bands out there. The cover is typical metal though, cliched and dated. I definitely won't be seeking this out to play on my own, but I'll give a slight nod for their talent.
Mustaine is one of the most gifted technical guitarists in the world, but this is really kind of a snoozer of an album.
holy shit this was boring.
i hate metal
Not great but there are much worse albums in this list
This was fine. Impressive guitar work but didn't find that anything really stuck with me. And I still just do not like Dave's voice or lyrics. But some of the parts ripped, definitely no slacking on the guitar front.
Nie lubię ciężkiego metalu i jego odmian. Należy jednak docenić popierdzielanie na gitarce.
hmm. not my fav album, but the boots cover was everything and more.
Meeeh
Its megadeth, and yet they still sound like any speed/trash metall band in the 80s
In 1986-7 I was in year 10-11, and I remember guys with “Megadeth kicks Metallica’s ass” on their pencil cases (or something to that effect). At the time I had no interest. Later, I became one of the “Black Album converts”, saw the doco “Some Kind of Monster” in the early 2000s, and have loosely followed Metallica’s journey ever since. But I never really got into their early stuff as much, nor Megadeth. Why all this about Metallica? Because Dave Mustaine’s whole thing, at least at that time, seems to have been to prove he could play faster, “heavier” and cleverer than the band that kicked him out. Listening more seriously to this album now, I’d have to say that “objectively” he may have succeeded in all three (not so sure about the second, but then he had a low bar at the time - Metallica’s later slower stuff is much heavier than any of the speed/thrash stuff, which is partly the fault of the recording but also a necessary corollary of playing too many notes too fast - just ask Mozart’s critics). But somehow Megadeths’s riffs, the songs , the arrangements appeal to me even less than their counterparts on Master of Puppets etc. It’s as if Megadeth have succeeded in doing even more of what I like less about early Metallica. To put it another way, this album just doesn’t make me want to bang my head, let alone to come back for a closer listen to the (apparently) socially conscious lyrics (which perhaps someone should have told my 16 yo self about).
Not my bag at all, but I guess they’re good at what they do. There’s some tasty guitar & the production’s good. I quite enjoyed Peace Sells & I Ain’t Superstitious. Otherwise, all a bit generic.
This is probably one of the best examples of mid-80s thrash metal recorded (especially given that Metallica's 80s albums often suffered from pretty shitty production and mixing). It is hard to think how they could have improved this within the confines of the genre; the playing is super tight, the lead lines are lightening fast, Mustaine's lyrics are suitably nasty and sung with the appropriate sneer. It really is perfectly done for what it is. The band is clearly incredibly well rehearsed and super-tight (despite the ongoing heroin issues for half the band). The album even benefits from being recorded cheaply and a bit roughly (on an independent budget), but with a major label coming in with some better money for a really good mix and mastering. The tracks have enough roughness to make them compelling, and a sense of immediacy and danger (with minimal overdubbing, editing or click-tracking), but enough work to make sure the album doesn't sound like it was recorded with tin cans and string (as with many 80s metal records). Comparing the original Randy Burns mixes on the deluxe edition shows the improvement this mix and mastering made). Mustaine clearly set out to produce the ultimate metal album (for the time); faster, tighter, heavier, meaner and better sounding than any of his contemporaries (especially Metallica), and I think he succeeded at that. But, apart from the title track (which I would happily put on a metal playlist any time), the rest of it is a bit mechanical. The guitar solos are particular problem for me; they are lightening fast and technically proficient, but it just seems like typing to me. And Mustaine's sneering vocals wear on me after a while. My mate Tim and I listened to quite a bit of thrash around this period (mostly local Sydney bands, like the Hard-Ons), and so this wasn't completely out of my wheelhouse when I was 17 (which would be the perfect age for this), and I am pretty sure I was aware of this record, but it didn't connect with me then and it doesn't connect with me now. I can appreciate it, but I just doesn't move me.
too intense for me today. its not bad but eew.
I think that this album is the first time I've heard a whole track from Megadeth. I was aware of the band, and could tell you that Dave Mustaine is in that band, but that's about it. I did not enjoy Peace Sells...But Who's Buying. I don't understand lots of Heavy Metal, lyrically or musically.
You can't convince me that this isn't about Dave Mustaine's war with Men's Wearhouse.
Never cared too much for Megadeth. I've tried and tried but they just do not strike a chord with me. Maybe someday.
Would obviously be better without Dave Mustaine's voice or guitar tone. And no amount of remastering in the world can save this from sounding like it was recorded in his shower.
I was never a big fan of Metadeth or speed/thrash metal growing up, so I wasn’t looking forward to this one to be honest. After listening to it, I actually didn’t despise it as much as I thought I would. A few of the songs were more the type of heavy metal that I like than I expected. If you took the best 8 or so songs from the album, I’d probably give it 3 stars. However, it was 21 songs and 90 minutes long. Because of that, it was a slog to get through all of the thrash metal I don’t typically like, so I had to give it 2 stars.
5/10
Metal needs representation and this is reasonably heavy I guess. It will help wake you up in the morning I'll give it that.
I was going to say something charitable about needing to understand the vernacular in order to get what the band is saying...then I remembered that for a while, I actually liked this sort of thing. Thrash wasn't ever an explicitly political stance, much more reactionary pose. Mind you, this was 1986. "Morning in America" and all that self-serving horseshit. One can excuse reactionary impulses. My sense is that outrage is worthless unless tempered and targeted usefully. And that takes a lot of work. This album is brimful with enthusiasm, a little short on reflection, and wouldn't have done more than preach to a niche band of coverts.
Not what I usually listen to, but, at the right time…this could be a great listen. Above average for the genre. 2.5/5
The beginning of Devil's Island would make a good ringtone. 2/5
Terrible voice
Don't totally hate it and can appreciate some... just not my music
Well, still better than Linkin Park.
Eh.
Super technical Peaceful guitar harmonies followed by heavy metal is cool until you do it on every song Feels like a commercial version of Throbbing Gristle Can't think of a single time I would want to listen to this
This was alright in terms of instrumentation (did not care for the vocals sorry) but the songs kind of blended into one another and I didn't come out of this with any favourites that I want to revisit - also just don't think i'm much of a fan of heavy metal tbh
This is not my taste in music whatsoever.
again, not very mega, not very dethy. fairly generic metal really. i got to the 8th track and i genuinely thought i would be on the last track as it felt like i'd been listening to it all day. that bascially translates to it all sounds the same.
Repeating myself...thrash is not my thing so maybe there's something to this that I don't see. But I do enjoy Megadeth's 90s output and so this felt like an odd pick over their other albums. The later 3 tracks finished strong though.
Nice guitar but pretty shit otherwise
Nee, dit heeft de tand des tijds niet doorstaan.
I'm not buying it.
I might enjoy this more on a different occasion, but good grief, this album annoyed the hell out of me this time around. A very generous 2 stars.
Ikkje så fan, dessverre
I like heavy metal. But something about this just doesn't grab me. Just not polished and feels like guitar noise. So no, it just does not work. D
Some great riffs but Mustaine's vocals kind of ruin this
This is a pretty mediocre metal album to me. Not much else comes to mind to say about it.
Great technical playing, dubious singing and dumb lyrics. Fine as mindless rock, not an amazing album.
Poor draft
Peace Sells . . . But Who’s Buying? by Megadeth (1986) Well, this is grim. From the relatively innocuous tale of a guy trying to get away with cheating on his homicidal lover (the opening track “Wake Up Dead”) to the death-embracing musings of a guy playing Russian Roulette (the closing track “My Last Words”), we are treated to Satanic celebrations (“The Conjuring”, “Bad Omen”), a paean to murderously sadistic gore (“Good Mourning/Black Friday”) and other misanthropic delectations. This album lacks the honest vitality of Iron Maiden, the serious and mesmerizing darkness of Jane’s Addiction, and the musicality of Metallica. With finely executed and elaborate guitar runs, power chords, heavy bass lines, wild drum stylings, snarly (but weak) vocals, and fast paced tempos, Megadeth delivers prototypically extreme metal. Give them credit for having their scales and beats down cold. And they play well together. But the music lacks any feeling other than rage. Except for the rocking “I Ain’t Superstitious”, it’s entirely one dimensional. Overall, the album’s lack of subtlety is numbing. Boring, even. The title track “Peace Sells” might be considered the highlight of the album, variously described as ‘politically oriented’, ‘socially aware’, and ‘topical’, but it is none of these. The concept is merely a naked rip-off of a line from an article in (the notoriously conservative!) Reader’s Digest: “Peace Would Sell But No One Would Buy It”. If this song is, as reputed, Megadeth’s signature piece, the signature is forged. And its message makes no sense. It has nothing to do with the war/peace dichotomy. It’s all about the self-justification of an atheistic, deadbeat, mean-spirited, and unambitious lowlife. The only thing going for this song is the opening bass riff. The opening instrumental of “Good Mourning/Black Friday” and the intro to “My Last Words” are nice, but they don’t come close to redeeming this quintessentially anti-redemptive record. 2/5
Couldn’t get into it. Didn’t finish.
