I don't think I've ever listened to an album that has been so benign yet has made me so genuinely annoyed. And to top it off there's no Crazy Horse anywhere in this stupid album! or even anything that has the ENERGY of a Crazy Horse. Total disappointment

What a fucking travesty. This album plays on some sort of nostalgia that does not exist. It is uninspired. It is boring. And it is just playing bad. Neil may have been prolific but the magic does not last forever I suppose.

This is a country album pretending to be a grunge album, in a very cringe-inducing way. The kind of album your friend's mom would listen to and think about how it's super heavy or edgy, when the "edge" it has feels incredibly fake and shallow. And that's before getting into the fact that half the songs are at least 2+ minutes too long with some of the least interesting guitar solos I've heard. Milquetoast and generally uninspiring

Neil young sucks ass

This album is... fine. It has some solid jams on it, but my god does this album really deserve to be on the list above so many other deserving records? I really like Neil Young, but he is already clearly over-represented in the book. Then to put on a late-career jam record without any major hits? Completely insane. I could see this as a must-listen specifically for Neil Young fans, it certainly represents and interesting return to form in his career, but it is absolutely NOT a must-listen for everyone. Musically this album is a 3/5, but in the context of being a "must hear before you die" it's a 1/5.

Out of all the mediocre Neil young albums we’ve been given, this one still wasn’t it.

I do not like Neil Young on a good day. I have a hard time getting through his classics. That makes this album a really tough venture. This album sounds very much like Neil and a bunch of guys got together on a Saturday afternoon in a garage, started hammering beers and noodling around with instruments and turned it into an album. Nothing within this album is a "classic" or even worthy of a repeated listen. It is just a collection of tracks that are OK, but terribly forgettable.

Pleeease, have mercy. No more Neil Young records! There are a select few artists this list choose to include in absurdum, and Neil Youn has joined that group now. This will of course be my subjective view, which is reinforced by the fact that we're approaching the latter part of this list. But this record was so incredibly dull! Everything Neil Young touches isn't gold, ok? Neil's singing felt more labored and borderline out of tune than before. No memorable melodies to latch onto. It just felt like a really unpolished record overall. It is less folk and more distorted and heavy than previous Neil Young records, which works against itself. Overall a really boring record, which might not be as bad as I'm making it out to be. But I really suffered every single minute listening to this. Strong 1.

Electric Neil Young is really the worst Neil Young. How would I know, you ask? Because there are so incredibly many Neil Young records on this list. On this album, his singing really doesn’t work. It feels whiny and out of key. The dad rock influences don’t work in his favor either, and the whole thing just falls flat. The songs drone on for too long, and not a single one really feels like anything special.

Really boring album would not listen to again , if this was the only album I could listen to I would stop listening to music ! What a depressing ride it was…not for me

Just kind of same-y, muddy, and downtempo. Blends all together.

I don't like Neil Young. This is my third Neil Young album. It was the worst... So far.

This is so unappealing, uninteresting, long, boring and energy draining. Through almost the entire album I had the feeling that I was listening to the same ideas over and over again. The same rock/country bases, same irritating vocal melodies, same garbage and passionless solos and same rhythms. The songs are obviously not the exact same, but they feel like they were all produced under the same awful blueprint. And to make matters worse, there are 4 songs that surpass the 7 minutes mark. There are a couple of exceptions. 'Farmer John' and 'Mother Earth' are the only songs that do something different. First one has a more alternative rock sound and the last one is basically a choir singing over a guitar. I honestly think these are the best tracks due to them breaking a bit the monotony, but still uninteresting. This was a pain to get through the two times I listened to it.

Crazy Horse is Great! Neil Young.... His vocals make me mad. No way this guy became famous sounding like this. I think these songs all had potential if not for him. Music was not interesting enough for me to want to hear the whole thing so I didn't. We've heard something along the lines of this before. I don't think i'm missing out. Also hate the country mix.

It wasn’t gratingly bad so much as relentlessly Neil Young: whining vocals, twangy guitar, and an annoying commitment to the same chord for very long stretches of time. Maybe there’s something to admire in the tenacious mediocrity, but any amount of this sound is more than I personally need.

I do NOT like Neil young’s voice. And I do not like egregious 8 min songs for every song on an album! The actual music isn’t bad per se but it’s truly nothing special. I do not understand why this album is on the list. This is just reheated leftovers!

Probably in a minority here, but I’ve never really listened to Neil Young, and wouldn’t be able to name any of his songs off the top of my head. I obviously know the name, but his music is not the type of rock I’ve ever listened to - a little like The Rolling Stones, which the first song on this album reminded me a bit of. God… some of this is painful (currently on Farmer John and boy is it hard on the ears) Had to turn off the final track - was hurting me head. As a bonus I also started to listen to his “Like a Hurricane” as The Mission covered it. I can safely say that I think the Mission version is immeasurably better in all regards. Guess I am not a Neil Young fan.

I hate this. It's melting my mind how boring it is. I understand that this is garage rock epitome, a classic by a legend. But there is no writing, ("give love a chance", "I keep fuckin up". How clever, how novel). And I know and love some of Neil Young's work, he can be incredible if he wants too, don't know why he decided to make no effort here. I get the concept, it's supposed to be jamming and music that is free, but the "improvisation" doesn't work, all the songs are incredibly too long and don't seem to land. They don't go anywhere interesting, they don't feel fresh or coming from the heart, they feel lazy and bloated. In a way, it does succeed in doing what it aimed, it does feel like a jam session, one with your dad making music with his buddies from work. No freshness or originality whatsoever, sounds dated even for the 90's. Wouldn't be here if it hadn't the brand Neil Young. No.

Album No.8 I believe this is my first impression of Neil Young. Overall I'd describe the album as mediocre or a bit worse. There's no particularly horrid part of it, the vocals could be better but they're sort of tolerable I guess (not as much in certain songs like verses in Over and Over). I didn't like the longer songs as much particularly, like the instrumental section in Country Home. The album wasn't the most engaging. Probably my least favorite Neil Young album. I don't know, maybe it's because this is album 20 for him, but I think he kinda lost the magic.

I don’t really see the necessity to continuously recycle Neil Young on this listing. There is no variance in the music.

Why the hell is this album on this list? This is not good. It's dull and uninspired, the songs are clumsy and ponderous, there's no energy or excitement and it's a pretentious attempt to appear relevant. And the singing...it's more like caterwauling. Lord, it was hard to listen to this garbage.

This is DULLLLL. Guy can't sing. Every now and again I get an album that really makes me question why I'm even bothering with this list and this is one of them.

I don’t want to have to come down on this album hard. I have a high tolerance for country-rock, I was raised in a home where a lot of it was played. Even if I don’t like it, I can see the appeal in its best offerings. But this is not the genre’s best offering. In fact, the genre isn’t even the big problem here. The problem, unfortunately, is Neil Young’s voice. Neil is HURTING to hit those higher notes. It’s not lovably aged like the later Johnny Cash recordings. It’s not charmingly personable like Leonard Cohen or Yung Lean. It’s just screechy and rough. Neil Young is an incredible musician, but nothing here warrants him attempting to sing his way out of things. From “Over and Over” up through “Love and Only Love”, it is a slog to sift through the singing, only to find some very safe, typical country-rock guitars and drums. It’s not all horrible though! The conviction on “White Line” is fairly compelling and memorable. “Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)” is almost like this cruel teaser at the end of the album, showing that Neil and the band are capable of unique song arrangements and quality performances. But the rest of this album, from tracks 3-9…a slog. I’d go listen to earlier, more iconic Neil Young, if that’s what you’re searching for. And if you want good country rock from the 90’s, just do Garth Brooks. Nothing to see or hear on Ragged Glory here.

Solid guitar riffs and old school rock feeling to the album. It doesn't connect with me though. It feels to slow and I'm not a huge fan of the singers voice in most of the songs.

I don’t like Neil Young as a person. I find him whiny, self important, and incredibly annoying. I like a lot of Neil Young’s music, but this album is not a part of that. Neil Young doing acoustic folk music is very very enjoyable, but Neil Young doing this weird rock offshoot is not something I can bring myself to care for. His half singing half yelling schtick on this record is not good. It’s certainly not the worst album on this list, but it ain’t great. 1*

Listen. I can concede that although Neil Young is a sanctimonious prick, he is also a talented songwriter. Sure. There are at least two Neil Young albums that are reasonable inclusions on this list, one of which we’ve already reviewed. This album is not the other. I got the impression throughout listening of a live band that’s unexpectedly playing very loudly at a restaurant that you showed up to just to eat and spend the entire meal hoping they end their set soon, or at least turn it down. Neil’s trademark sorta-off-key vocal affect does not work on this album. 2/10

You know that guy. The middle aged dad who used to be in a pretty cool band when he was younger, then gave it up for a while. Now he’s got the dusty old guitar down from the loft and is determined to show these darn kids with their modern music what real rock ‘n’ roll is, with proper guitar solos that last 10 minutes and edgy swearing and everything. Oh yes, and he’s also somehow turned into a republican and is startlingly homophobic. Yeah. Fuck that guy.

Not a fan of Neil Young, avoid his music at all cost. I listened to this against my will but I did like two of the songs, Love to Burn and Over and Over. I have concluded that if anyone else sang his songs, I’d probably be a fan, just can’t get over his voice.

This is a chore to listen to, with its extremely boring musicality, Neil's less than enjoyable singing, and just the utter "whatever"-ness of it all. I was coasting through most of this album thinking it could scrape by with a two star, but the second (!) ten minute song on the album really broke me, with just a complete lack of joy coming from within. This is music made to appeal to the most trivial of stereotypes from the era, and the fact that this has been lumped in with grunge for years now is a sin. This is dad rock, through and through, and while I absolutely love Young's On the Beach, this is nothing similar to that at all, and is much worse off for it. Maybe its Crazy Horse's fault? I'll have to keep that in mind when listening to his other albums.

Oh my god. I knew I wasn't going to like this very much due to the length and the year, but I did not expect it to be this bad. His singing is awful. I usually don't mind his voice, but it sounds so bad here. These songs are super long for no reason. It's just 10 minutes of the same thing over and over. There's no reason for the songs to be so long. It's aggravating. I don't really understand why this is on here. Some of the songs really pissed me off. My favourite song would be White Line I guess because it's the shortest song.

First song was good. Absolutely awful vocals in the middle part of the album. Guitar was cool though

God Country Home is awful. His voice is terrible. Out of tune. Whiny. Skip. I've made it as far as "over and over" (track 4) and I'm going to have to abandon this. The instrumentals are OK-ish, nothing to write home about, but his voice is absolutely fucking awful. He can't hold a tune any more than I could hold the plums of an enraged bull elephant. This is dismal. People actually like this crap?

1 Is this a joke? This sounds like a joke. It sounds like he’s making fun of himself. Also I can’t tell what it wants to be. Is it country? Is it rock? Folk? Some songs even gave me hair/glam metal vibes. The whole thing overstated its welcome from the start and lasted through to the end. Seeing that it came out in 1990 it’s clear that Neil Young was begging to stay relevant but I have to imagine this is what the death rattle of the 80’s sounds like. Favorites include: Mansion on the Hill I guess

First 1 I’m handing out. Neill Youngs vocal inflections are not good and it seems like he’s always just a few Hz off his intended note. The instrumentals are fine but bland in my opinion. The combined package is just straight unappealing with mediocre songwriting, bad vocal performance and boring instrumentals.

Day 145: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Ragged Glory (1990) It's with dread that I put on this album. I debated with myself whether to review it at all, given how little I appreciate Neil Young's aesthetic, apart from his brief country period. Two minutes into the opener, Country Home, I am already regretting my choice. Young's guitar is as maladroit as ever and his voice has coarsened appreciably with age, losing any charm it might have had for me. Okay. I can see this is a lost cause. Because I can't bear to sit through this album, it wouldn't be fair to rate it.

Über dieses Album kann ich einfach nur abkotzen. Ich habe beim hören versucht, herauszufinden, was ausgerechnet diese Platte so interessant macht, in diese Liste aufgenommen zu werden. Neil Youngs Gesang und die überflüssigen Dur-'Soli' über überflüssige Dur – Akkordfolgen (und er mag seine Dur-Akkordfolgen ganz offenbar) sind nicht einfach nur verzichtbar, sondern schlicht scheiße. Dieses Album klingt dort besser, wo Young nicht singt, und auch da klingt es nicht gut. Ich musste bei den „Kompositionen“ stellenweise an Kinderlieder zum Lernen des ABC oder der Zahlen von 1-10 denken. Neil Young ist krass überschätzt.
