Reviews (page 6 of 8)

Typical Neil Young type rock. Not my thing but not bad. 6/10.

Eh, not my thing but it's okay

an enjoyable album to listen to

Just fine garage rock. Neil's voice is magical

I was going to give this one a 2 but it won me over.

So many familiar songs so good

Didn't listen to the full album but liked what I heard

Gritty Neil, a lot of new songs for me on this one.

This record is from 1990? Wild. Rock/country but with Neil Young’s goofy voice crooning over it all. I liked it

Bit dated

Like... I get it, but I don't care about it.

Not my thing

Liked his other work more. Still, quite a catchy album

It was alright. I can understand why it's on the list, but I liked some of Neil Young's other work more. Still, it was a nice enough listen.

Very dad rock, still pretty good. Sometimes I'm just listening to an album and have a thought like that and realize what I'm hearing is good but feel unable to connect to it. (Except for F*!#in' Up because it reminds me of Common Sense.) It's unfair I suppose, but in the end this feels like a long (but rockin') album of medium tempo jams. Young's voice is still compelling but I still don't like it all that much. And yet... At the end I feel like I could listen to this again.

5/18 3.5/5. First half is very country, dad-rock-ish, with a couple tracks that go on for far too long, second half moves to softer melodies and sweet psychedelia. Standout Tracks: White Line, Mansion On the Hill, Love and Only Love, Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)

Not his best, but ok for 1990...

**An ok album

not my fave neil young, but a worthwhile listen

🥱 bland

Never been a fan of Neil Young, but have I really given it a chance. OK. Open mind. Fairly generic rock. Boring. Neil's voice is pretty bad and whiny. I'm angry now. Bah.

4/10 not my style

It’s a Neil Young album. Feels a little generic, tbh. None of the tracks is very different from any of the others or from any number of other Neil Young albums. It’s fine.

I want to get off the Crazy Horse. Please.

I like this better than his other offerings. But why is there a Neil Young album from 1990 on here? And why does he have 9 entries on this list from his solo work and all his group albums. Thats absolutely crazy.

This is just ok. Classic folk I suppose - I can see why some people might like this, but not my cup of tea

Bit of a let down

Country rock, ale nie dla mnie.

Not a huge fan. Found it quite tiring to listen to..! Mother Earth was ok

I'm sick of Neil (stupid spelling BTW Neal is much better) and his timid fucking horse. Least crazy animal I've ever heard. Nearly bored to tears here. Make it stop.

bit boring

overall: 6/10. country rock vibes idk... not my style personally

Hmmmm not my style

This was dreadful. I don't get how Neil Young gets to be loved by some people. I don't really know where to start with criticism of this album. Just dreadful.

Yeah I think we only needed one Neil Young & Crazy Horse album here, if that. This one ain't it.

BOOOOOOring guitar slop. These guys have FIFTEEN albums together and this is one of the BEST?

mid. some songs are just too long, but they aren't bad. could be better

Not as much of a fan as the other Neil Young albums we have had. Seems like more of a jam session. 2.5

God that was awful. But not unlistenable. But also if some guy facetimed me and starting singing any of these songs on the guitar for me, I would start taking my skin off because I would rather do that than listen to this on an acoustic guitar with amateur singing. Worse than coldplay, but I dont want to give this album the honour of being given just 1 star. Dont get me wrong though I did hate this

Breaking news - I don't like Neil Young's music. I was going to say I don't like Neil Young but then realised I don't actually know a single thing about the man.

Genuinely why are there so many Neil Young/ Neil Young related albums? There is no way in hell he deserves this much representation. I'm genuinely counting down the days till I'm through them all - at least he's not singing in that awful falsetto for this one

Not my favorite neil young album or vibe but dude is good

Not one radio hit, all same note IMO. Rock n roll .

2 - not the best

Had the stuff I usually like but didn't vibe with it.

its a solid meh. didn't save any song. I do not like his voice, I mean its not HORRIBLE, but it is definitely not good. wouldn't play it again

Neil's songs would benefit from compression. Consistently too long. The interludes are not that interesting, especially in context of the era he put this out.

Oh for gods sakes not another Neil Young album. The more this guy appears on the album the less I truly understand why, its just all very samey mediocre music. This is stuck in the doldrums of Dad Rock in the most negative way. Honestly, fuck it, I can't be even bothered to write out my usual review for this. There's not enough to say. It's like his other albums except maybe slightly worse. Except now with a tinge of the cleanest, most sanitary grunge imagineable.

Best Song: Love and Only Love

A pretty basic album where Young really doesn’t sound that great here. Surprised this made the list given his lengthy discography. Likes: Over and Over; Mansion on the Hill

I think you either really like Neil Young, or you're meh about Neil Young. I want to be in the former camp, but am stuck in the latter camp.

If I'm keeping it a buck? Very uninspiring. Just 4/4 rock sounds that fit perfectly into a grid. Not bad, not good. Just bleh. No need to return to it. Highlights: Fuckin Up, Mother Earth

I honestly did not find anything special in this and don’t see anything worth coming back to

Honestly, I was expecting a lot more from this album

i didn't care for this album. look, i'm not into that much singer songwriter stuff, and this just reminds me of the stuff made 20 years earlier with a 90's rock twist, but like... that doesn't help

For being Crazy Horse, there was nothing crazy about this album. If Neil Young had a disguise and didn't use his name on this album, I'm sure we wouldn't be listening to it. It just comes off as boring with decent songwriting.

Not a fan of the vocals or this genre

It’s ok

mehr country als „the heavy rock style“ welcher im review erwähnt ist.

Decent work but overall just some songs that were good

Another one where I am not sure why it is on the list

Fuzzy and Neil Young-y, but none of the songs particularly stand out compared to his earlier work.

Neil Young is one of my favorite artists. I really did not like this album however. the songs sounded interesting but musically they just did not do anything for me. Wouldn't listen to it again and certainly would not buy it

I’ve covered the physical discomfort I experience listening to Neil sing. So I’ll dedicate this one to the band. Crazy Horse had been together for 20 years at this point. They had had tremendous success. How in God’s name do they still sound like a group of high school kids learning to play their instruments??!?!? (And I mean every one of them - including Neil with his dopey guitar leads.) Great punk bands compensate for their technical shortcomings with authenticity. (To be fair, the musicianship on this album is so bad it makes the Ramones sound like Rush or Tool by comparison.) These guys always sounded pretentious; like the amateurishness was cultivated. This album proves it. Even the laziest, most indifferent musicians would have accidentally gotten better than this through all of that experience. I was committed to finishing it too. But Farmer John is such a giant FUCK YOU to musicality that I decided I had heard quite enough (esp. since this is the 43rd Neil Young album I’ve been told I need to listen to before I die.)

pretty meh overall in my opinion. i feel like most people think that Neil Young is a prolific lyricist, but this just felt to me like a middle schooler was writing these lyrics. the best parts were when the band was just jamming along, but honestly it kinda felt lifeless. not sure how this made the list. i did enjoy the song 'Interstate', but overall this is a huge pass from me

I didn’t like Neil Young’s music from his prime, why would I like it when he’s washed?

I like the actual music in this quite a bit, but I'm just so tired of Neil Young's voice that it throws this album off. Someone should have told Neil you can't hit those high notes anymore in "Love and Only Love". I want to listen to an album of just crazy horse.

Another disappointing journey into country-rock territory. The songs feel extremely basic and repetitive, while the production is marred by a dated 80s-style snare reverb that clashes with the "raw" aesthetic of the band. The vocal harmonies are kinda annoying, making the 62-minute runtime a tedious chore rather than an epic rock experience.

Neil Young album #2. I don't like Neil Young. Apparently, I like Neil Young and Crazy Horse a little more. Good rock sound. His voice isn't egregiously awful on this one, though it still grates. Guitar sound is great. Not bad.

This is a “garage band” type album. Neil Young wanted to put together an album where the band could play extended jams, like rock bands did back in the day, without fancy technology. I like some Neil Young songs, although I never liked his singing voice. There are a few nice tracks here, while the rest are standard rock and roll. 2.5 stars.

No thank you. Lotta potato talk. Feels a bit like a more country Steely Dan. Some of the songs sounded almost like R.E.M. when I wasn't paying attention (but when I paid attention closer I thought "nope"). The persistent ABAB rhyme scheme is kind of endearing because it's the kind of lyrics I would write. But I'm not on the 1001 Albums To Hear Before You Die list, am I?

wayyy too country dad rock for me

Sounds like a lame old rocker that missed his genre to be a country singer

I like some of the songs on the album but not the biggest fan of Neil Young’s voice or duration of songs.

Evidently the grumpy old bastard has had a fall out with Amazon because I had to listen via Spotify. I don't have an account, so his tedious, whiny mumbling was interspersed with ads, which were the highlight. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ in part Revisit ❌️ Tedious★★☆☆☆ (4/10) Total reviewed : 241 Already owned : 54 Purchased : 12 To buy list : 3 Nope : 172

meh, no es mi onda, la guitarra suena bien igual pero es muy rock sureño es musica q a papá le gustaria mucho

Boring, and his voice is rough, almost laughably so. Some decent riffs, but that can't save an album.

Oof, Neil you’re better than this

This wasn’t for me at all. For me it felt sloppy, repetitive, borderline and overindulgent but somehow I feel that was the point. The guitar tone is easily the best thing about the album and honestly carries most of the weight. But the songs just go on and on and on (no pun intended). This isn’t helped by the fact that Neil Youngs vocals really do nothing for me and are actively grating to my ears. There are flashes where it feels alive and massive, but it never quite locks into something I’d actually return to. I know I’m in the minority for this but it’s just not for me.

This album is ok but why the fuck is it on this list? I gave up on the last track as it is objectively crap.

Not a huge fan, when I would say that I was decently interested in older young projects. Its the rock coat of paint that does it. I just dont like it all that much. Its not bad per se but it feels like an attempt to mix it up rather than a genuine this is what we need to make moment. At this point hes made music for what, like 20 years? I get it the idea to begin with but its just not good enough to solidify this style for him. Nothing was horrible. It wasn't like laughable but at the end of the day its a novelty to hear this singer do this music. Thats just it. A fleeting fancy that ill never remember.

Nothing special

I deleted what the last me said. He was kinder than me, but I will concede that this isn't the worst.

Ragged for sure,  and way too long. The songs that were 5+ minutes felt that way. There's some Neil Young songs I like, none were on this album.

An absolute slog that felt like being trapped at a rehearsal for a bar band that doesn't know when to quit. While some people call this "garage rock," it honestly just sounds like a group of guys who have known each other too long noodling around without any sense of restraint or editing. The songs are incredibly repetitive, with some stretching out to ten minutes of aimless guitar jams that offer zero dynamics and quickly become boring. It feels less like a professional studio album and more like a half-assed attempt to milk a raw sound that just ends up sounding sloppy and uninspired.

This album didn't do much for me. Wasn't a fan of the vocals really at all, but I do appreciate the raw, almost under-engineered sound of the album. It really does sound just like a solid jam session. Songs are overly long, though, and the album drags. It's just not interesting enough. No variety in the songs and the lyrics are boring and uninspired. I dont get the appeal of these guys and their hookup with Neil Young. They just sound like a college desert rock garage band. "Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)" is the only really solid track on the album. On the other hand, "Farmer John" has to be one of the worst songs I've heard in a long while. It's gotta be a joke right? This is satire, right?!? Oh dear God, it's a spontaneous cover they did in one take. Shoulda left it off the album. That's all I got. This one gets a 2/5. I almost gave it a 1 because it pissed me off more and more as it went on. But some of the guitar is solid. Pretty disappointing overall.

it was okay, but I'd rather not listen to him, his voice ...

Decent record. I believe this is the first group I've seen live on this list. I am a Neil Young fan, could listen to him all day, but most music/ band featuring him are just average. His hits are amazing. This record started mediocre and got better.

4/10 - I found his to be generally boring and I don’t love Neil Young’s voice.

65/1088 2.3383* Not Neil's greatest effort but still has the vibe. No real killer tunes to speak of and, for that, I give it a low two.

Too much whiskydrinkin, truckdrivin, countrymusic attitude.

I really really actively dont like either his voice nor the decisions made instrumentally here. It's not unlistenable, but just really drab

Its a live album. Rarely good. Got half way before getting bored. Not a lot stands out on the album, and Neil Young's voice recorded live is just not good. Thankfully mostly guitar rock rather than singing, but all much of a much ness

The jam parts are curiously long considering they're continuously iterating over a single idea. Other than that... Another Neil Young album. There's his early Buffalo Springfield work on this list, plus multiple Crazy Horse ones, plus at least one Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album. He's alright, don't get me wrong. But it's just too much.

This List reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally overrates Niel young and elvis costello. there are 7 albums of niel young!! His voice is subpar, his songwriting is mediocre, lyrics i have no idea because i don't really care(it's music, not poetry). It's okey but very forgetable as with most youngs music for me. This really makes me question if new music is bad and massproduced or it has always been and we only remember hits and judge it by the hits. This album is all filler no killer. 90s content music

This is fine. Decent riffs, decent songs, slightly annoying voice at times. I’ll be fine never hearing this again. Borderline 3, but landed on a 2.

Respect to Neil Young, but his voice is an acquired taste that I have not acquired. I'm not sure I need a 10 minute long song reminding me that love and only love will endure and hate is everything you think it is. I especially don't need that song to repeat its first verse. Dude loves repeating a lyric. Guitar work is impressive but the lyrics didn't feel especially inspired. Probably would have preferred it as an instrumental album to be honest.

There was a pub back in my uni days simply called Rock'n'Roll, where the beer was dirt cheap and the clientele's clothing was made solely out of leather and jeans. After the indoor smoking ban in pubs, they decided that the designated smoking area is at the left side of the bar, while the right side was for nonsmokers. This album felt like that pub again. Maybe a controversial take, but no country rock album should last for an hour. It felt like listening to the same track over and over again. I don't like the vocals. I don't really want to go to Rock'n'Roll again.

This sounds like a reasonably competent bar band of middle-aged guys who are going through the motions to support the guy who writes all their songs, who is a pretty good guitar player and decent lyricist even though he can't sing for shit. The harmonies are solid - better than the lead vocals for sure - but the whole thing has a very "recorded in one take without any effort to mix anything" vibe. "Ragged" is right. I never understood the passion some people have for Neil Young, and this album did nothing to convince me.

I feel like this would be an amazing album if it just had some more work done to make it more concise, the bones are spectacular, but it just feels like everything goes on for far to long.

Geen fan

I might consider Neil Young a good singer if he was my uncle in my family. I had to fight to get through every song. 2/5

This explains why so many people hate New Wave.

Not really a fan at all. Sonically it sounds fine, nothing worth gravitating to though. Neil young I believe has a very horrible singing voice

shit was ass

Some decent stuff here, but overall a let down.

Tedious

not a fan of Neil Young music

This is very difficult to listen to....especially after a night of drinking at a holiday party. Started off okay, but lost flare towards the end.

Another Neil Young album....and not one of his top 10? Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a (there are 7 other Neil Young albums on the top 500) Best Songs

I recognized and liked the first track, and a couple others. At the end of the day just another NY album I won’t ever seek out on purpose.

Another day another frickin’ Neil Young album. Look, I get it…to a degree. But this is probably 6+ albums for him at this point. There’s gotta be a more measured approach to this list when no doubt other well-deserved artists are losing a single placement due to stuff like this. Ironically, I liked this album more than some of the other earlier Young inclusions due to better production and more cohesive song structures. I felt this was a fine listen, but who needs multiple 10+ minute songs with unnecessarily long guitar jams.

Man, Neil Young just doesn’t do it for me. I wanted to like this…just some good ‘ol rock and roll right? But it was just mediocre for me. Some decent licks but not really that memorable of songs. And even a lot of the solo’ing just isn’t that interesting. Songs are also way too long. 2.5 but rounding down.

Let it be known...this may be the album that broke me. I like Neil Young. I have enjoyed several of his albums on this list. But why so many? I get this isn't necessarily a "best albums" list...but please explain to me why we MUST hear eight Neil Young albums? Maybe we get seven and add ONE Tool album? Some glaring holes on this list with an annoying bias towards "old-timers." Ok, rant over. This album was prob going to get a bland 3* and then Farmer John hit and it is awful so I am rounding down. 2/5

Rock and roll I hear a lot of Pearl Jam in this

I really like Neil Young but gee, there’s a lot of rubbish on this album.

You know, when I started this challenge, I didn't realize I was committing to listening through nine different Neil Young albums. Not that it would have made much of a difference (as I probably would have done the 1001 Albums list either way), but it would have been nice to know that almost 1% of all the Book Albums were from a guy who sings like that. Jokes aside, Ragged Glory is my second Neil Young & Crazy Horse album and I have to agree with the Generator community on this one – it's not as good as Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (which itself is worse than Déjà Vu). There were a couple solid cuts and I didn't outright hate anything on the album, but it's certainly not something I'm going to willingly put on during my leisure time. Listening to Ragged Glory felt like overhearing a local rock band (comprised of middle-aged white dudes) at the pub while scarfing down an overpriced burger and tater tots – not the most unpleasant experience I can imagine, but it certainly doesn't evoke compelling art. This is fortunately Neil Young's lowest rated Book Album, so I'm hopeful that there are at least one or two gems among the six that remain! Highlights: Days That Used to Be, Love and Only Love

Meh. My generation's Neil Young is Dave Grohl. Came from a great band, followed up with a bad that's... fine.

Ima be honest I don’t like this sort of music from Neil Young. The like ragged country sound is just not for me. Disappointed tbh it wasn’t bad but it’s not good. Meh 4.9/10 2.4/5

Álbum esquecível. Um rock country bem pastel e sem presença. A melhor música foi a última, por ter sido a única de fato diferente e que me chamou a atenção. Ainda sim, tem pouco valor e provavelmente não revisitarei. Melhor do álbum: "Mother Earth (Natural Anthem)". Pior do álbum: "Farmer John".

Achei chatinho

I don't know why I'm listening to the country/folk rock artist Neil Young doing what Rolling Stone describes as the "36th best grunge album of all time", but I can tell you I don't really care for it. Also - vocally speaking, you know you can do another take, right? Certain songs were so rough and off key! (See Over and Over) Was that intentional? Couldn't say.

This album did not feel all that different from most of the stuff I've heard from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and while I appreciate the free-form spirit of the recording sessions and the music itself is fine, I didn't find anything in here that really excited me. 2/5

This is now, what I believe to be, the 8th album with Neil Young that I've had the (mis)pleasure of being assigned (sentenced?) by this list. While some have been better than others, this isn't one of those some. I just can't get on with his voice. On top of that, this album just kind of feels like it blends together like some amorphous blob of sonic gel. While I admire his outspokenness, I can't stand his music.

19/1089 ну... слушать то можно но я не люблю кантри и не люблю слушать рок в общем будто бы и норм, местами ну прикольно с натяжкой, но под средину уже уши начинают гудеть

Pedestrian

This Album picked up as it went! Quality I enjoyed certain songs over others and a few of them just sounded extremely similar to each other. All in all I see why this one maybe on the list but I can also make a case otherwise.

Perhaps one day I will come around on Neil Young but that day is not today. The cool guitar jams saved this from a one star.

As noted before, not a huge Neil Young fan. I just like the popular hits🤷🏻‍♂️

Decent?

not for me, like at all. got better though, i thought the first song was someone doing karaoke they recorded for fun. 1.5 (rounded up to 2)/5

I went in with the best of expectations and NYaCH only took five songs to shatter them all. Quite a few songs here are actually pretty terrible and almost ruined my day. In a world where Dinosaur Jr already published a few albums, why would I listen to Ragged Glory?

Not my favorite, not an album I would relisten to.

Ragged? Yes. Glory? None. Neil Young is a good guitarist but someone should have told him to leave the vocals to someone else loooong ago. His raggedy ass voice prompted me to fast forward through most of the songs

Ok album. Kind of boring overall, a few songs were enjoyable but most were bland and too long for me.

The songwriting is okay, but I don't like his voice...and it's really his 8th or 9th album on this list so far. Do we really need to listen to it before we die?

Eh. Neil Young's sound is iconic but I found this one boring.

The kind of music and the vocalists voice don't match. It's hard to describe but its like expecting rock music and then getting a that nasally friend who can't sing despite putting in so much effort. The mastering is exactly what you'd expect for rock/country music.

There’s still some juice from Neil Young and Crazy Horse in 2010. But I don’t know how much of this is call great. 2.5/5

Definitely not a Neil Young fan, most of his albums here I've rated a 2, except for Harvest, which got a 3. The music itself would give this album a 3 or even 4 from me, but Neil's voice ruins everything. Another 2 star from me.

This was the definition of "meh". Absolutely nothing offensive about it whatsoever, but there was nothing that stuck in my mind about it at all, and at 62 minutes in length, it's about 20 longer than it needed to be. Really disappointing to go from Rust Never Sleeps to this.

It’s Neil Young. Meh.

It's fine but it all kinda sounds the same

It's fine for what it is, but Neil Young is not a good vocalist to me

Imagine you’re 12 and you like to write lyrics in a journal. You bring the journal everywhere. Unfortunately for you, you accidentally left that journal behind at that tea shop you visited with your parents. Fortunately for Neil Young, he not only discovered the journal, but he used your lyrics for this very album. I really wanted to like this because of how influential Neil Young is and because I like a bunch of what he did nearly 20 years prior to this release. Not without trying, I just couldn’t like it. Beyond the lyrics, something about the band just didn’t sound like they were gelling, and for what sounds like a live recorded album, missing gel makes the album a miss for me. Some fun guitar solos like in “love and only love.” “Mother Earth…” is the exception to everything stated above. This is a beautiful song and it’s a bummer the other songs brought down the overall album score.

Mansion on the Hill has that epic Neil Young shredding. The album doesn't hold a candle to After The Gold Rush.

Chill rock from my childhood

It's okay I guess

Yup. Sounds like Neil Young.

It's ok, I guess

not bad but not good at all

Competent but dull

Honestly better one of their albums Still so boring

Preface: I don't like Neil Young's voice, so I was not thrilled to see this album come up. It doesn't start off bad. I like that this leans more into rock than the folksy work he did with Crosby Stills Nash. However, by halfway through, I was ready for it to be done. AND IT JUST KEPT GOING...AND GOING...

Neil Young is boring. His voice is “unique” but not in a good way in my opinion.

Not bad.

If 70’s/80’s rock was ice cream, this album would be vanilla. If it came on my FM radio i probably wouldn’t change it. Nor would I choose it if I was streaming music. It just felt basic

8/25/25. First time hearing Neil Young capture this type of sound. Decent music but thought it was a tad boring - straightforward chord progressions and a bit predictable. Can still respect Neil exploring different sounds outside of folk for this.

Dragged a lot, I don't think this needed to be over an hour long. At a certain point I thought I was hearing the same song over and over. There were some decent moments, though.

Bit of a snoozer. Sounded exactly like my vague idea of what it would sound like

Good artist not so great album

Kind of generic shouty rock

This came on strong and just leveled off right away. It has the lazy guitar sound playing that is matched by lazy guitar solos. That’s fine, I actually like that. Neil sounds like “this notes for you” Neil which I am not a huge fan of. It’s hollow and flat. The vocals that is. Nothing carry’s this album. It almost passes for one long song . It’s background music for all sorts of things, just maybe not a funeral or wedding Choice cut: Over and Over

Oh boy. If going through this list has taught me anything, it's that I can't stand Neil Young, but there's an admirable level of variety and versatility. Every album I dislike for a different reason. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere had great songs with awful vocals. On The Beach had tolerable vocals, boring and meandering songs. With great trepidation I hit Play and...it started out alright? Country Home started off strongly, at least until I looked up mid-song and sure it was an excruciatingly unnecessary 7 minutes. The band, and particularly the specific guitar tone on the album, sounds great. Poor old Neil still can't sing worth a fuck (the opening to 'Over and Over' is particularly bad), butd while his wobbly warble is still here, for the most part he manages to avoid that particularly grating upper-register falsetto from his earlier years I can't stand. But dear god, are these songs ridiculously, unnecessarily long and boring. I don't mind a good improvisational jam, but none of these songs lend themselves to it. There's no melodic variation, tension/release, or crescendo like builds, just a boring generic riff over a steady 4/4 beat. I don't quite understand the 'grunge' moniker. If anything it seems like anti-grunge given its long periods of noodling and lack of loud-quiet-loud dynamics, but I can see how people might like this one. *Almost* a 3 from me, Neil. Almost. Let's call it 2.75. Four down, five to go...

This is #day353 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… my second Neil Young record on the list, considering Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Deja Vu a few months back. While I occasionally find myself relating to the music, as the '90s alt-rock is pretty much on display here, I can't say the same about the vocals and delivery (or the lyrics, after all). That kind of whiny style of singing... I just don't know. I also have a feeling he's hitting the wrong notes most of the time. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day354.

I really like Neil Young & The Crazy Horse, but this album is definitely on this list because it has some historical value because of its praise of garage rock and grunge. The actual music isn't that interesting though. Very samey vocals (with oddly off-place backing vocals), a good guitar without adding anything new to the known Young sound, and the same driving beat that sounds still very 1980s. This is not per se a bad album but really not something that needs to be on the list of 1001 albums I need to listen before I die. Neil Young created better albums before and after this release.

didn’t love

Fine but nothing special here.

It’s fine

At times I thought I was a Neil Young fan. This album proved me wrong. I didn't like it. Too much country. 2/5

I like Neil Young but this album is a big pile of meh.

I was excited about another album from this duo, but I did not like this. Very one-note and repetitive. Would not listen to again.

I didn’t know Neil Young was bad at singing

Boring

Okay, ruined by terrible song "Farmer John"

My 3rd Young album so far and the worst yet. It's not bad but it's the sort of bland country rock that all just blends into itself, no defining tracks. Had to go back and listen to parts just to get more of a feel but was grasping at straws.

More like Neil old

Pretty subpar of the Neil young experience

Eh, kinda rock-ish but not quite working for me. Feels forgettable.

A good Sunday morning listen.

Neil Young's voice is so annoying. Otherwise solid rock and roll

Can't really be arsed with this today. Nowhere near as good as other Neil Young outputs, or Young + Crazy Horse outputs at that.

I have tremendous respect for Young as an artist, but this album honestly feels so dated that it’s almost naive. No issue is actually examined in depth (love will overcome hate; respect the earth; etc.) and neither the lyrics or instrumentals are interesting enough to salvage it. The hippies failed, liberalism capitulated to tech oligarchs, and hatred won the arms race years ago. Gimme some Daft Punk to listen to.

Not Neil’s finest.

Viertes Album, das Neil Young enthält, zweites am Stück. Nein, das ist zu viel. War jetzt nichts Besonderes.

I like Neil Young, but I did not like this album. Music seemed repetitive and not interesting.

I didn't really enjoy this album, too much guitar and too much Neil Young. Sorry, but his voice gets to me sometimes.

Okay for background music. The guitar parts were definitely the highlight of the album.

Not as good as his older stuff but it was fine

Mid af

I liked Neils voice when both he and I were younger, but I am not feeling it anymore. None of the songs resonated with me.

Neil Young definitely lost a step by the time he made this album. You can tell he's starting to lose it vocally. I also find it a bit "hello fellow kids" for him to try to take on the 90s grunge aesthetic. I don't really have a problem with him making this album per se, but there are grunge native bands that probably deserved the spot here over Neil Young for an album like this.

I liked the 10 minute song (“Love to Burn”) but this was my least favorite of the manyyyyy Neil Young albums I’ve gotten so far.

orcarina of time crazyy taxi

ok, not super good. Kinda boring stuff and some of these tracks are wayyy longer than necessary

A 1-hour album feels like a 2.5-hour movie

Not a big fan 2.5

Has not aged that well.

didn’t care for it but Crazy Horse is an excellent name

still not much of a fan.. didn't really vibe with any of it

Boring and sterile

I didn't get into it. Father John was a truly unhinged song and the most awful guitar tone known to man ruined what was otherwise a gorgeous last track lol. Artistic choices, I guess?

Not much better than the last one.

I like his solo.stuff better

Nope sorry, I just don't see the attraction.

Ffs, this guy again?

01) Country Home - 6,0 02) White Line - 5,5 03) Fuckin' Up - 6,0 04) Over and Over - 6,5 05) Love to Burn - 5,5 06) Farmer John - 5,5 07) Mansion on the Hill - 6,5 08) Days That Used to Be - 6,5 09) Love and Only Love - 6,0 10) Mother Earth (Natural Anthem) - 6,0 TOTAL: 6,00 (60/100) Current ranking: 342/426

I thought I liked Neil young more, but vocals and music were just meh

Songs were too long and sounded similar.

Not my favorite, he has some interesting ranges on this album, but to me personally nothing that stands out as saying this is Neil young

Grungy

I can appreciate the conceptual ambition that went into this simple one-take garage-rock record; but Neil Young can deliver so much more memorable music than this. The last track is the best of the bunch, but maybe that's just because it dares to be different. I'm disappointed.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Ragged Glory It's just an average country album that tried to be different, but failed. And while I do appreciate that they were doing this for fun, this album isn't something I'll really listen too often. The songs are long and boring with repetitive riffs, even though there are some highlights that happen all throughout. At least, because it does have actual rock elements for a country album, this is decent. 1.- Country Home = 6/10 2.- White Line = 5/10 3.- Fuckin' Up = 7/10 4.- Over and Over = 6/10 5.- Love to Burn = 5/10 6.- Farmer John = 4/10 7.- Mansion on the Hill = 8/10 8.- Days That Used to Be = 7/10 9.- Love and Only Love = 5/10 10.- Mother Earth (Natural Anthem) = 8/10 FINAL SCORE: 6.1/10

Not his best work

I honestly don't hate Neil Young's voice as much as a lot of the people on here seem to hate it, but it doesn't really make up for the fact that most of these songs really do just sound the same. Some of the songs are really long, yes, but I found myself wondering a couple times how long the song *really* was and finding that I was in a new one entirely. 1.) Mansion on the Hill 2.) White Line thats it, sorry

rough stuff. though i'm only nearing the halfway point of my 1001 albums journey, i AM reaching my breaking point of these neil young albums. they all sound the same and i'm baffled that people truly love this music. he has a handful of tracks i enjoy, but naturally none of them are on this album. the best part was him singing about fuckin' up. otherwise, pretty dull and annoying. even the cover of farmer john was annoying. neil, why do you vex me so favorites: fuckin' up, mansion on the hill

this was a slog to get through. neil young at his worst

I’ve tried but I just can’t

Neil young just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t hate it by any means and he has some good lines but its just not really something I would ever play for people or tell anyone to go looking for it.

It’s Neil Young. It’s good. Not sure why it’s on the list.

Dadcore

Much like the other Neil Young projects here, I just don't get much out of it. I'll never listen again, but wasn't anything horrendous, just totally fine.

• 2/5 • The album represents a garage-y turn for NY, so points for creative range, but that doesn’t make it especially good • NY’s best tunes are master judo moves that turn his god-awful voice to his advantage. This is a judo-free album. • Love the fuzzy 90s guitar work, though. The album is epitomized by Over and Over Again, where I started to groove on the guitar opener only to have the mood ruined when the vocals came in. • This album might best be listened to in Karaoke mode

Bland and boring, and really highlights Young’s painful singing voice. 2

Neil Dung

This is definitely not grunge. You can tell it was recorded live. It's interesting. I was promised this would rock harder than it does, but Neil Young is a folk singer at heart.

Just regular Neil young sounds. Nothing interesting here.

This is a bit naff

I can't stand Neil Young's voice

I have really tried with Neil Young's voice but I just can't get into it. Also not a fan of the 10 minute songs with guitar solos that just seem to go on and on. Not for me.

Not my favorite Neil Young work. I think his earlier albums are much better. Not sure if I would want to listen to this again, just not much for me to like about it.

If this exact record had been made by anybody else, it wouldn't have been on the list. Not even if it was Elvis Costello. Favorite song: Mansion on the hill

I like Neil Young but this is a bit of a rough rag bag of an album. Not one of his high points.

could i write poetry to this? n

2.5. Just an average Neil Young album

never been the biggest Neil Young fan. Enjoy him with Crosby, Stills & Nash. And earlier with Buffalo Springfield. But could do without his "later solo" stuff. wasn't the biggest fan of this album.

Not a huge Neil Young fan and this album did nothing for me.

One thing I didn't expect from a Neil Young album was for it to sound bland and uninspiring, but here we are. One or two songs actually commanded some attention, but the rest faded into a background of noise and 'meh'.

You can tell he thinks he sounds amazing.

3.5/10 This one did its job competently: grungey alt rock with influences of country/folk, but it really didn’t work for me Sludgy music, long indulgent instrumental sections with wanky guitar, trite lyrics, an air of macho posturing. More self-serious North America rock that just doesn’t push my buttons Only reason I didn’t hate this was some of the excellent harmonised vocals Best: Mansion on the Hill

Neil Young fans probably feel the same way about hiphop as I feel about Neil Young.

Mediocre garage band music from start to finish. A mediocre band would get three stars, but Mr. Young knows better than this.

Typically, I like Neil Young. His falsetto voice can be annoying sometimes, but his songs are good. This album, on the other hand, seems old and bloated. It sounds like a group of older men drinking beer and experiencing a sort of collective mid-life crisis.

Garage Rock sounding like a few old guys trying to "jam like the old days in the basement with a beer.”

This is a good album if you like Neil Young, but nothing wild if you have no opinion on him.

What I imagine I sound like when I'm 3 beers over my limit. Overly emotional and sad about regular shit. The skill is clearly there (even if I don't love his voice), but the vibe is just dramatic with nothing to back it up.

sounded like a parody album

I listened to the first few songs and dont want to listen to it later, Im just not a fan of this soft rock stuff, I know Neil Young is incredibly talented yeah yeah whatever like can we move on please thank you

Kinda mid 5.5/10

All the bar band noise in the comfort of my own home. Nah thanks. Jaysus this was a tough out.

I don't know but this album is too old sounding for me. I wish I had a country house. Over and Over Young sounds like he's struggling from the end of singing. I'm not the biggest Neil Young fan to be sure and he has some great songs but this one is just a lot of electric guitar noodling over not very interesting song lyrics.

Ok album spoiled by overly long songs

Sigh. At least it's back on Spotify for ease. An hour of straight ahead country tinged rock. "Ragged Glory was voted the 36th best grunge album of all time by Rolling Stone in 2019" What a claim! How many genuinely good grunge albums are there? I don't think there's 35. And I liked grunge. Things I like about it: The first couple of tracks. The backing vocals. The laying down of a groove and going places with it. The solos are good. Some of them. Yeah I guess it kind of IS a grunge album! The first 3 or so minutes of Love and Only Love. Things I don't like: The grooves/songs themselves aren't very interesting. The last 7 minutes of Love and Only Love. I know Farmer John from that garage cover by The Premiers. Thats a banger. This version, is not, and really brings home the desire for a concise kicking tune. I don't think I noticed how bad the drummer was until this album. By Love to Burn things are really starting to sound the same over and over.

Lille 2er

STANDOUTS: n/a and DNF OVERALL: 2/5; I wonder if I'm allergic to male vocalists.

Never been a big fan of Neil Young… Still not…

So I’m a big fan of Neil & Crazy Horse – and “Live Rust” was one of my early go-to live albums… That said, this was just middle of the road for me, and well below Neil’s top-shelf efforts… I heard that they wanted to capture more of a “grungy” feel, so they played all of the songs live in the studio over and over – for several weeks, and then took what they thought was the best take for each song to the album – which I kinda like actually… Neil saying this approach “Allowed the Horse to not think" – which Is pretty cool… The downside of the approach I guess, is that it does sort of explain the “notch below top-shelf” audio quality of the album, as I’m sure that style has some recording tradeoffs that you need to be willing to make… Anyways, “Fuckin’ Up”, “Mansion On The Hill” , & “Love & Only Love” were the best tracks IMO, but everything else was just there for me… “Love To Burn” starts out almost exactly like “Love & Only Love” – but just doesn’t pop in quite the same way… Not a bad album, it’s just that I expect a lot from Neil & Crazy Horse, and this fell a bit short for sure – but a solid album…

Musically it's ok, but I Neil just isn't a good vocalist

Didn’t spend much time on this one because a knew going in I wouldn’t like it, and it was confirmed within a few songs. I had made an active choice not to listen to this album back in the day. NY has his moments but this isn’t one of them.

meh. vocals sein iwie arsch

It's disappointing how average it sounds. Even the Crazy Horse who I liked the last time sounds like one more faceless boomer rock band here

en olisi yllättynyt, jos yung neilillä olisi tämän tekemisen aikana jonkinlainen aivo vamma, aivo sairaus tai vastaavankaltainen aivo onnettomuus.. nimittäin niin peruspöhnöä rokkia koko albumi PYSÄHDY PYSÄYTÄ MUSIIKKI- and the song name here yeah *railakas musiikki jatkuu*. siis mitä helvettiä, ei mitään syytä miksi tätä albumia tarvitsisi kuunnella. onneksi kitaralle annetaan paljon painoarvoa, koska se nimittäin kuulostaa tooodella hyvältä tässä, ja pelastaa koko homman flopilta. biisit ovat kaikki samankaltaisia joka on huono asia kun kaltainen on tylsä, autotallien pikkubändien tylsää jammailua. eikä tarvi 45 vuotiaana enää laulaa kenenkään tyttäristä neil F*!#in' up

Very disappointing, particularly coming a few weeks after getting Heart of Gold and absolutely loving it. It reminded me of Be Here Now, a rambling mess with what should be 4-minute songs lasting 10 minutes. Arguably one of the better songs, fuckin up, inexplicably decides to end on 1 whole minute of amp feedback. Why? There's a reason every song doesn't end on a minute of feedback. Because it's a shite idea. Not even once. Neil's voice sounds particularly strained and aged here, and suits rock n roll a lot less than it suited the country/folk of Heart of Gold. Didn't even save down a track from this one.

Pretty much straight cookie-cutter classic rock with a little haze and grunge tossed in there. Not really anything I need again though. 4/10

I was excited to see his name and to listen but I just didn’t do it for me

It's nothing if not consistent, but it's pretty tedious: over 60 minutes of trying to tap back into the energy of "Rockin' in the Free World."

This wasn't as terrible as I was expecting.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, I knew the name Neil Young but was not too familiar with his music. I can now say that I am not impressed.. can’t decide if this album sounded more like an amateur busker or drunken karaoke. Very few redeeming moments sparsely scattered throughout. 1.5/5

I like Young's folk stuff more

Neil’s voice sounds horrible, the songs aren’t interesting, and the album is too long. Contrasted against how good Neil can be, this album feels even worse. Compare this to “Harvest” for example (good vocals, interesting songs, 38 minutes), there’s not a lot to like.

I did not love this

FAVO: Over and Over

A few good songs but far from essential Neil Young

Every song sounds the same.

him pulling his music from Spotify wasn't a loss and his return unnecessary. also the instrumental has potential, if it would lean into a more raunchy or grungy sound, but like this you have a horrible vocalist and a boring guitar lulling you into sleep.

Not as original as his other albums

Not my flavour

I just can't get past his voice. No bueno.

I thought the album was okay but I idk if it was just my computer or something but that last song was god awful - 5/10
