Reviews (page 10 of 13)
I didn't take much notice of this at the time, but enjoyed listening to it now - pretty strong songs.
More skater music! Okay, so…I don’t love this (sorry Chuck in my high school bio class who told me I would), but I don’t really hate it either. It’s fine, I guess. Just not my style. 3/5
Like Rusty Cage and Outshined more than anything on this album. Needs a fair bit more grit to go with the sludge, it's a little too metal slow jams for me.
Okay album 3/5
It makes me sad when I see online how much people really loved Chris Cornell. This is definitely part of my teenage soundtrack, and while it’s not something I frequently seek out, I don’t really have anything negative to say about it.
Olemmeko kaikki yksin? Joo, joo, joo joo. Vie minut pois. En halua jäädä. PITÄÄ olla pehmeämpi tapa. Haluan pyyhkiä itseni pois. Nautin grillatusta taimenesta. black hole sun
At first I thought it was mediocre at best but after re-listening to some songs I found it much more enjoyable.
TBH I remember this record being better. Either that or grunge just really hasn't help up over time. IDK.
heavy rock
So long. Not terrible though, nice to recognize some stuff, liked it more than I thought I would
1. Black Hole Sun 2. The Day I Tried To Live 3. Like Suicide 4. Superunknown 5. Fell On Black Days 6. Spoonman 7. Limo Wreck 8. 4th Of July 9. My Wave 10. Let Me Drown 11. Mailman 12. Fresh Tendrils 13. Half 14. Head Down 15. Kickstand
An album of mostly fillers. Could have definitely been cut much shorter to have a stronger impact. I was about halfway through the album by the time I started looking at the track list thinking, "how much more to go?" Overrated band where the vocals are a strong point of their sound but doesn't evoke any reaction from me.
While this sounds great and feels like a dedicated effort, lyrically it is romantically obsessed with dread and not in an insightful way. The songs are looong and end up boring me in spite of their musicianship.
pretty good kind of alt rock
Oh, I know Black Hole Sun! But that's it for what I'm going in with. I don't mind it! It's good as background music, funnily enough. Actually, yeah, I'm actually really liking some of these.
I like these guys in fits and spurts, but not so much to sit and listen to an entire album straight through. I want to like them more. I try to like them more. I feel like I should like them more. I just don’t.
i don’t listen to rock much and this was pretty good!!
It was okay, not my favorite.
Just lovely sounds all around. But none of the tracks really wooed me. Black Hole Sun is a classic but so am going to give this album a 3, just BARELY not a 4.
Would be a 5 if it wast still 1994
ok
Prefer Badmotorfinger....
Black Hole Sun and Spoonman are definite highlights that I was obsessed with in probably middle school? The rest of the album is pretty meh.
хороший, но запомнились только fell on black days и black hole sun (ну это шедевры)
I never really got into Soundgarden. The hits were inescapable during the MTV era, to be sure. And, my local classic rock station continues to play them. But, despite liking the genre in general, I never was a huge fan. Not much changed after listening to Superunknown. Some of the familiar tunes are on this, and I can definitely understand why this is such a successful album. I was also pleasantly surprised by some of the songs I hadn't heard before. I still don't love Soundgarden, and I'm sure I won't return to this album, but my respect for them grew after listening to this.
I don't really remember - I think it was fine?
Very much a product of its time. I'm not sure it holds up very well today.
Another basic grunge kind of album that didn’t really grab me. I don’t dislike grunge but it does tend to sound rather samey.
Didn't realize that Soundgarden had this heavy an edge. Felt kind of monotonous at times though.
Hits
It was ok
Went into this expecting to really like it having heard a few songs before, but it was just alright. Definitely a sound that gets boring after 20 minutes. Favorite song was: Fell on Black Days 6/10
I remember Ian Sicurella quoting Black Hole Sun in 6th grade math class, and it seeming like some fascinating exotic thing. I eventually found out it was a song, and have been listening to it since. I didn't think any of the other songs really matched Black Hole Sun, but it was overall a solid and mostly interesting album. Album cover: (A) It really grabs your attention
Remember buying this when it first came out. Sounds a bit dated now but some nice tracks
merely alright
I 100% confused Savage Garden with Soundgarden and did not expect this to be grunge. Lol
Liked this a good bit. Have no idea where but I definitely listened to Black Hole Sun before. Highlights include: “My Wave” “Head Down” “Black Hole Sun” “Half”
I surprised myself and liked this one.
This was perhaps the most fun I had with an album that was new to me so far. However, why was it so LONG.
Okay, I love one song
место норм, но в целом прям томно так. но явно поинтереснее нирваны
Pretty solid, but nothing that really captured my attention. The album is too long but fairly standard grungy rock
i have heard of them obviously - but for a second i was expecting savage garden and got excited for Truly, madly, deeply. and was very disappointed. however that is not soundgardens fault. they’re good i guess, i just don’t like them so far. and to think the album is 1hr 10!!!!! i have to go middle of the road cause they’re not terrible but i would technically score lower if i started this whole process again and scored differently across the board. meh.
I only knew Black Hole Sun before listening to this record. Its quite lengthy but I did enjoy it more and more as it went along.
Not really my style
Black Hole Sun is a classic!
Black hole sun, The day i tried to live и 4th of july
Ever since I heard Black Hole Sun (think it was the video on The Chart Show one Saturday lunchtime) I've really wanted to like Soundgarden more widely. Later met a mate who seemed to worship Kim Thayil and talked about him all the time. That said besides that song I've never really latched onto much else by them. Same with Audioslave, I never listened to Temple of the Dog. It actually took me a long time to listen to this album. I bought Black Hole Sun as a single, it had a couple of live tracks and a remix of Spoonman on it, none of which particularly caught my ear. I was definitely much more into the Pumpkins, Nin, Pearl Jam and Nirvana etc. I did eventually listen to the whole album in the mid 00s but by then I'd kind of moved on from grunge, as had the rest of the world. I liked it perfectly well, but you know, I'd got older, things are harder to stick unless you fall for them early. It's 73 minutes long. Which is nearly always too long (although I just mentioned the Pumpkins which I found to not be too long lol). I would skip tracks 2-5 here. Keep the opener and go from Head Down, which is great. Meaty riffs abound, and meaty bass-driven riffs too, which always tickles my taste buds. The longer it goes on, the more I get into it, and more I understand why skipping those mediocre tracks up front was essential, what were they thinking? One of them was even a single, which I don't understand. Ok it does meander again towards the end. I'm teetering. It's a high 3. Best tracks - Black Hole Sun, Head Down, The Day I tried to Live.
Yet another band that I had heard of, but hadn’t actually heard before. I thought the album was pretty good, but a bit long for me. Although I liked it, I won’t go out of my way to listen to it again. 3 stars from me.
Nice! I like.
Not too bad.
Was pretty good but was a little long for my liking. This seems like a record you have to invest sometime into and find all the little bits you will eventually Love. “Black Hole Sun” is a classic song and definitely the best on here as far as being an instant ear worm. This will get a 3.5/5 (could move up to a 4 with future listens)
I like this better than some 90s rock but it’s still not really my thing.
For a super group they're more meh then super. Black Hole Sun is a good song.
Not listened to all the way through before. Clearly a really good album in there - the singles are exceptional. But suffers from the curse of the 90s album. It’s too long!
Pretty standard rock fare. A bit samey.
I do love grunge but I don't know if this stood out among other grunges.
First track - i fw this 🙏🙏 3rd track - i cannot LIE all of these kinda sound the same 6th track - THIS IS ALL THE SAME SHIT however this track (superunknown) is better then the last 3 which were BORING AS FUCK black hole sun - i did come black hole sun i did like 8 tracks in this shit is so repetetive The day i tried to live thank you for making this bearable fresh tendrils - very fun but i would not listen again 4th july and half cool
Not my thing but nothing was bad
good
Not overrated. Properly rated. An incredible blend of anguish and agression in the middle of the decade of depression. Grunge was a hangover from the booze, drugs, and sex filled 1980s. In which music actually began to blend melodramatic themes with agressive rock forward elements. Chris Cornell and Soundgarden remain in my hierarchy for bands to be cognizant of in this time period.
Not the kind of music I seek out it's a little muddy for me (I know it's grunge). But it's really well done Chris Cornell's vocals are perfect for this kind of music and he's really good. Enjoyed it
meh, by no means bad but just not my type of music
i guess it’s good if you’re into grunge but growing up for me, is realising that grunge is not the superior alt music genre. it’s actually fucking boring and so depressing. guess that’s why Chris Cornell killed himself.
Starts off great but starts wearing out its welcome by the last three songs
I guess this is good. I wasn't in the mood for hard rock, but it is pretty decent.
"Black Hole Sun" is phenomenal. Rest of the album—not so much. I honestly find most of the grunge genre to be too loud/formulaic :'( The album was also quite long; it was draining to finish it.
Cool
3.5
Sådär ja. Nu är det sång, text och melodi i en helig allians. Såhär ska rockmusik låta. Kanske att den var lite bättre förr än jag tycker att den är idag. En stark 3a.
“Superunknown” by Soundgarden is indisputably a grunge classic and a masterpiece of its time. The album, released in 1994, features a rich and well-crafted production, incorporating elements of alternative rock and metal, which solidified the band as one of the most influential in the movement. However, despite its undeniable qualities, the dense sound and the length of some tracks can be challenges for the listening experience. The mix of heavy riffs and more ethereal passages creates an engaging atmosphere, but, at certain moments, this intensity can become excessive and tiring. However, one of the album's highlights is, without a doubt, Chris Cornell's powerful vocals. His ability to mix loudness and softness brings an emotional depth that stands out in songs like "Black Hole Sun" and "Fell on Black Days". Cornell manages to capture the anguish and introspection of the lyrics impressively, making the listener connect viscerally with the message. While the sound and length of the tracks may be a barrier for some, the vocal performance is one of the elements that elevates “Superunknown” to legendary status, serving as a reminder of the talent and expressiveness that characterize this era of rock.
teenage memories
Good overall, Black Hole Sun is an awesome track.
Just pretty boring. I don’t like Cornell’s voice at all which ruins the whole thing really. Would avoid most of the tunes on there but it’s definitely saved by the musicianship.
Never been a huge fan of Soundgarden outside of the radio hits at the height of this album. Overall, solid sound, but I'm not a fan Chris Cornell's voice screaming at me for an hour (like most are).
Pretty good. Half a star for black hole sun alone.
Hasn’t aged quite as well as I’d hoped. Used to love it as a young’un, but I found this went on a bit. Some absolute classics that do stand the test of time, like of course BHS, Spoonman, Let Me Drown, and Cornell’s vocals are excellent. But half the record blurs into one, and there’s a few that sound like they belong in quite cliche rock bars. Decent though all in all!
Never listened to a Soundgarden song except for black hole sun, I know Chris Cornell better through audioslave and his solo stuff. Really enjoyed it to start with, he has an amazing voice, the best 'rock' voice there is really. The album was far too long though and the sound isn't varied enough. I thought the songs that were less grungy were best but that just be because they stood out. Overall it was decent but not a classic, 3.5 but more a 3 than 4.
Chris Cornell had such an excellent rock voice - I preferred his later work which emphasised his talents with his vocals. This album is absolutely fine. Nice to have on in the background. Nothing stood out.
Never listened to Soundgarden before, but know Chris Cornell from audioslave. He's got a great voice for rock. I know this is considered grunge, but not what sound comes to mind when I think of grunge. I know black hole sun from the video being on mtv2 all the time when I was a teenager. Remember it pretty vividly. I thought I would enjoy this more than I did based on that. Thought that was the best track though. Spoonman was good too. I think at least 3.5
The only known song is 'Black Hole Sun', without it they would still be 'Superunkown'.
Nodding my head saying “hell yeah brother”
Classic
Love it.
Perfectly fine. Has been since 1994.
OK
Was expecting this to be better than it was
Ok so I know this album is well regarded so was looking forward to giving it a listen. For a genre of music I don’t usually seek out it was more enjoyable than I was expecting. Probably not one I will re listen to a lot but certainly wouldn’t discard it out of hand. 3.2 from me.
"Black Hole Sun" is used in the show "For All Mankind" in a montage as three missions launch towards Mars, and reminding me of that high makes the album worth at least three stars.
Actually quite liked it. Badger music
C’est ben correct
First time listening to a whole Soundgarden Album, I enjoyed it, the instrumentals are great but i found alot of the songs kinda blended together. Only exception being Black Hole Sun which may or may not be why thats one of Soundgardens well know songs, because it doesn't sound like the rest of their stuff. Vocals were alright but guitar riffs were the star of the show for me. 3/5
Pretty inconsistent quality, this album feels like it was made to fill airtime on a “classic rock” radio station. It slaps when it’s good and it’s just forgettable most of the time. Wouldn’t put this album on as a whole any time soon but I never skip Black Hole Sun when it comes on. Highlights: Fell On Black Days, Head Down, Black Hole Sun
Gripping lyrics, sometimes lost beneath the wash of the slamming guitar; hard-alt rock to dance naked to.
It was fine, good instrumentals, just not my cup of tea.
Overall: 3/5 Notes: All songs first time listen except 'Black Hole Sun' and 'Spoonman.' 1. "Let Me Drown" 2/5 2. "My Wave" 2/5 3. "Fell on Black Days" 4/5 4. "Mailman" 4/5 5. "Superunknown" 2/5 6. "Head Down" 7. "Black Hole Sun" 5/5 8. "Spoonman" 5/5 9. "Limo Wreck" 2/5 10. "The Day I Tried to Live" 1/5 11. "Kickstand" /5 12. "Fresh Tendrils" 3/5 13. "4th of July" 2/5 14. "Half" 1/5 15. "Like Suicide" 3/5
a vibe, but not my vibe. personally, i thought it was a bit too long, like some of the songs seemed stretched out. again, pretty mid, was okay.
I really like Chris Cornell's voice (even though I liked it better in Audioslave) and this is a good album, but not great. It drags on a bit too much and in typical grunge fashion, it's leaning a bit too heavy on the heavy for my taste. Still, it features some highlights and overall cool tunes.
Spooooon Mannnnn
I was pretty content well before it ended, but it's not bad. Spoonman, Black Hole Sun, 4th of July, the title track, Fell On Black Days, all very good songs. I won't return to the full thing too often, but I respect it, and if I'm in the mood for grunge, this will be a frequent option.
I thought of them as a one hit wonder, but it's actually a very nice album.
I was just a little disappointed. Great album, but expected more. It suffers from being longer than it needs. Still willing to give it a 3.5/5
Grunge is weird for me, because if you were to ask me if I liked it, it would be a resounding yes. Then I remember that the only grunge band I've ever loved is Nirvana. Every other grunge band from that era that I've listened to just doesn't hold a candle to Nirvana. Soundgarden's Superunknown has plenty of quality tracks, namely the big hits, but even the lesser known songs are well produced rock music. My problem is that so many tracks here sound too much like slightly updated hard rock tracks from the two decades prior. Nothing wrong with that, but it leaves me feeling like I've heard it all before. This came out pretty deep into the grunge movement too, so I would have expected a more contemporary sound. *Heard before.
Inte min stil vanligtvis, men kan ändå se varför hur det blev ett populärt album. Black Hole Sun var en banger
Mm, nice. Does get a bit same-old-grungey as it goes on ...but it's a good'un.
Meh.
Songs too long. Kinda felt repetitive. Really loved the guitars and drums. Couldn’t hear much of the vocals. Dropped mid way
Not a genre I typically gravitate towards but I can appreciate the talent. Black Hole Sun was a pleasant surprise.
3 Chris Cornell has one of the best voices in history but soundgarden has never been super interesting to me
I think it's a great album, but a little heavy for my personal tastes.
Disappointed to say it’s a 3 from me. Love Chris Cornell’s voice, Black Hole Sun is a classic obviously, but it’s just overindulgent and goes on far longer than it should. In all honestly I prefer Audioslave, has that bit of punch that this lacks
Good
One or two great tracks where it all comes together buried in over an hour where it seems pretty tired.
Some good songs, but the rest of the tracks didn't really live to do the singles.
20240817 Superunknown – Soundgarden 3.5/5 With only knowing Black Hole Sun before listening to Superunknown and being not much into Grunge apart from Nirvana and some more songs, this listening has been an interesting one. Clearly marked by a 90’s rock sound, Soundgarden earn a lot of points thanks to Chris Cornell’s voice, probably one of the best on the scene. However, the sound gets kind of repetitive through the songs, and makes a continue session with the album a bit boring. Despite that, I have saved it for a future deeper listen. Onto the positives, its clear how Soundgarden has been one of the pillars of Grunge in the 90’s, but developing a deeper and heavier sound, probably influencing Alternative Rock and Nu Metal bands formed later. Again, Cornell’s voice is fantastic, and is probably what elevates their sound to the next level. Additionally, the instrumentation but specially the guitars create a nice bed of sounds that generate full heavy songs. On the other hand, as I mentioned before, this heavy sound makes the songs in Superunknown difficult to differentiate, and to really dive into them in a quickly first or second listen. The album needs a slow digestion to be fully appreciated, because 70 minutes of them clogs your brain a bit. On top of that, a very consistent “strong six - light seven” quality through the album makes it difficult to pick any highlights, apart of course from Black Hole Sun, the best song by far. Favourite songs: Black Hole Sun, Let Me Drown, Superunknown Least favourite songs: My Wave, Kickstand, 4th of July
Solid 3! Too long but some hidden gems throughout. Really glad it made the list!
Spoonman will always remind me of playing Rock Band for hours on end, even if it wasn’t a song we chose very often. There are three really good songs on this album and one all-timer, the rest just kinda leaves me wanting a little more. Half is also strange and doesn’t really fit with the vibe of the rest of the album. Overall, a decent listen that felt like a slog towards the end but gets a bump for the hits.
Not my style but I liked it and would listen to it on occasion.
Impressive album Not my taste though Black Hole Sun be timeless
Very well made. Cornell’s vocals stand out on every track. Quintessential ROCK singer.
Kind of a difficult one for me. I remember getting this album from the library and being into the stand out songs which were initially: Black Hole Sun, Let Me Drown, Spoonman and Superunknown. Listening today, I definitely think the deeper cuts are not as stand out with the exceptions of Limo Wreck, Half and the Day I tried to Live. Some parts of this record lean too much on popular alternative rock tropes for the time with just enough personality to get by. That being said, when it hits it really does hit. Interesting but not overly technical plaing. Sometimes weird sonic noises coming out of the guitar. Great singing. Just barely a 3 for me which is wild as this is the most I've had to write about a record in awhile.
Pretty good sound
While grunge is not my go to genre of music, there was more tk this album than I thought there would be. Great guitar work and vocals. Definitely worth a listen because of Soundgarden's and Chris Cornell's legendary status. Solid 3 and would rate higher if I appreciated grunge more than I do..
Heard Black Hole Sun before, but never really heard anything else of Soundgarden. Ok album, but wouldn’t listen again 3/5
I love Soundgarden, but this isn’t the best release they have. There’s a bunch of great songs on here, but the runtime is a bit too long and there’s a number of filler tracks on it. Badmotorfinger also had the better hit singles and deepcuts imoz
Never was a fan but respected them more than most of the other grunge bands. Not sure why, honestly. Not bad but a bit monotonous. I feel like my garden would have more variety.
I respect them and their sound but it's just not for me.
Felt like I'd missed out on Soundgarden - loved Temple of the Dog and a couple of their singles but had never listened to any albums. Cornell's voice is amazing but the album didn't blow me away - maybe a band where I prefer to listen to the odd song rather than whole albums.
Black Hole Sun is one of the best songs of the 90s. Fell on Black Days is a solid alt-rock radio staple. Yelling SPOOOOOONMAAAANNN is about as fun as grunge gets. The rest is very consistent - heavy detuned riffs with a bit of a groove to them, high-caliber vocals, and some cool guitar stuff - but it's all a bit samey and there's too much of it. Very butt-rock. They've become pretty overrated in retrospect: their best stuff is great, but it's spread out over a bunch of CDs with tons of filler.
Classic heavy metal, some hits most people will recognize
no one will ever write a song as good as black hole sun again, huh
De kunne godt have skåret lidt sange væk.
I just like the British 90s alternative music so much more than US. This sounds so cheesy like if the Eagles dads turned to this during their midlife crisis. Rating: 2.7
I really liked the song Black Hole Sun.
...
ah, its been awhile since I could add another to the List of Albums heard through the wall of my brothers room. I thought for sure I would be giving this an easy 5 but it was nostalgia talking. That being said I only recognized Black Hole Sun and Spoonman which are both great, mind you. This also tells me my brother probably only played those two tracks or the rest of the album is kind of forgettable. Chris Cornell has an amazing voice as always.
Solid album, was an easy listen on a grey Saturday. Black hole sun and fell on black days were the standouts for me.
Black Hole Sun is catchy as ever, and I really found myself digging Chris Cornell's vocal virtuosity. His musicianship really makes Soundgarden stand out from their grunge peers. Listening to this also left me a bit melancholy; it was hard not to think of his preventable death.
It’s giving Seattle based music
Not my type of music, but I don't think this is bad. There are a few hits off here that I am familiar with and don't mind.
Not a big fan of grunge, but I appreciate the appeal
6/10. It had some good guitar moments and some slight nostalgia at times. But overall it wasn't super interesting to me and found myself not really indulging in it much at all.
it was alright. sounds like dad rock
I recognise why it is good, I've grown out of this noise.
Not a band I am familiar with. At first listen I thought it was going to be awful but as the album progressed I got more into it. Good vocals, good energy. It OK.
Close to a 4
Too long. But better than Pearl Jam
Naturally Black Hole Sun is amazing. But other than that singular track, I never really got the appeal of Soundgarden. Listening to it now, I can appreciate the vocalized melodies and the overall sound. But it is intense and a little goes a long way.
Chris Cornell's vocals are stellar, but this album is too long. I enjoyed listening to it, the band is great and I will happily listen to him sing, but as an album I thought there was too much filler.
Call this album a cigarette bc every part either rips or drags.
Не так плохо, как я ожидал, но тем не менее кипятка по поводу этого альбома я не понимаю. Лучшая песня - Head Down.
few highlights not overly my taste
Another nice surprise. The only disappointing aspect was it started off strongly and around tracks 9/10 there felt like a noticeable drop in quality.
I never got into Soungarden, even when I was big into PJ, Nirvana, etc... But I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. There's some good stuff on here, but it could be trimmed in bit. 70 minutes is a lot. High 3, low 4.
Solid enough for a genre I wouldn’t normally chose 5/10
Meh.
Accidentally listened to this one not long ago, didn't even think to check if it was on the list. Luckily, I still remember my impression, more or less. "Heard before" counter: 2/4 4th Of July was the reason I decided to listen to the whole album in the first place. It was so fucking good that I couldn't help comparing everything else to it and being dissapointed. While there's a lot of variety, and while I like most of the styles presented, it still sounds pretty generic But again, I like it. Just mad that not every song is 4th Of July
"Hm... this sounds like Audioslave, doesn't it?" "Uhhhh" Quite nice, 3.5 out of 5.
I associate this sound with a particular era. Fun but not sureI’d sit down and listen to this ent album start to finish in one sitting ever again.
Black hole sun rules
Kinda monotonous and unthrilling. A couple of songs stir some emotions. Memories of MTV hits back in the 90s ring cold now, not very complex layering, I dunno, not as impressed now as I had been back then. 2 stars. Ah well, 3 stars for nostalgia listening to this with my son.
It's a decent slab of grunge. I would definitely have enjoyed it more if a third to half was trimmed off as it's a bit long and bloated with some of the more middle-of-the-roady mid-tempo stuff but there was plenty I enjoyed. Chris Cornell was one of the best vocalists of his generation, but I prefer his later work against the harder backdrop of Audioslave.
Never liked Spoonman, but the rest is solid.
Just some pretty classic grunge. I think a bit too long but lots of classics.
Any merit this album has is diluted by its hour and ten minute runtime.
Been there and done that. Like all Soundgarden, the music is often overshadowed by Chris' voice which tweeters on 80s hair metal. When he keeps it low and under control, you have some of the best grunge from the 90s.
More variety then expected, but I will probably only return to “Black Hole Sun”
Not a big grunge fan. I find it mostly repetitive and noisy but there are a couple of good song on here.
Clearly a tight, quality band. Still haven’t caught on them… even after 20 plus years.
Great album bought upon release back in the day. Black hole sun and spoonman were in heavy rotation on MTV back then. Other standouts are my wave, fell on black days. Always loved Cornell’s superb vocals.
3.5*
Superunkown Don’t know a great deal about Soundgarden, other than the singer is Chris Cornell and that Black Hole Sun is a great song. First thing I noticed that this came across as a much better version of Pearl Jam, the guitar playing is a bit looser and funkier behind the heavy distortion. Then I noticed that it is very samey. Black Hole Sun stands out and rightly endures, Spoonman is also very good. I also liked Half as a change of instrumentation and I also liked Like Suicide and My Wave. Aside from that I found it hard to distinguish the songs or remember what was what. I think they are good at what they do, and there are some very good guitar moments, but I couldn’t really get into it. Maybe if I was 15 or 16 when this came out in 93 I might have got into it, but it doesn’t quite do it for me in 2024. It’s also very long at 70 minutes, which didn’t help. I’m finding it hard to muster much for this review, as ultimately I feel pretty neutral about it. Not in a negative way but I’m struggling to find any particular feelings or opinions either way. It’s fine, I neither like nor dislike it, it’s neither my thing nor not my thing. Allowing for that I can see it’s a very good example of this type of album and Black Hole Sun is a banger so I’ll go for a straight down the middle 3. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
good then
A perfectly fine album that's biggest fault is that it can't hold a candle to the masterpiece (Badmotorfinger) that preceded it
I never cared about Soundgarden. But, this album hit when I was 15-16 years old and I must have absorbed it through osmosis because I was instantly transported to Junior year of high school. Songs added to Spotify: 2
I like Soundgarden but I don't know if I really enjoyed this album. Something about it just didn't click with me.
Ok album, two stars normally but three with Black Hole Sun.
Better than anticipated. 3.5.
Well known grunge sound, defined the genre. I know fell on black days, black hole sun, spoonman. Sounds like Radio 92.9 in high school.
Very, very high 3 - not quite a 4
Dark grungy rock full of pounding riffs and great vocals. A little too overlong and mopey, but more or less a strong album. Best song: Black Hole Sun
black hole sun
Could appreciate from objective point of opinion even when not my taste at all
I see it being a great album, but it was a slog to get through. Not my thing.
Regular
Solid for their genre
Pretty good. Low 3.
let me drown, black hole sun, half pretty easy listening.
Limo wreck, the day I tried to live. The second half of the album pulls it together.
Ok? nicht wirklich banger?
This was just decent, through and through.
Spooooonman
I didn't get into this at the time it was released. It is a solid album, but I can't shake my opinions formed at the time that Chris Cornell's vision of what his music could be was not quite the right fit for his strengths. It is a great piece of work and contains some epic tracks.
I liked "Black Hole Sun", always have, but Soundgarden as a whole was always difficult for me to really get into and this is no exception. It's long and meandering at times, and you really need to be in a particular mood to appreciate it fully.
After the first song I thought this would be a slog but the album really grew on me as it progressed. The middle bit is really strong with some excellent psychedelic jam out moments and the one two punch of black hole sun and spoon man. None of the other songs really stood out to me but I still enjoyed them. At 70 minutes the album is a bit of a slog. Would have been more enjoyable at 45 minutes. Overall, I liked it better than I was expecting. I probably won't listen to the album again but I'm glad I sat down and gave it a chance.
Iconic part of music history and the grunge movement for a reason. Not my usual style but a solid album nonetheless.
This is a really fun listen. It's got some real energy to it, and frontman Chris Cornell is a truly impressive singer who shows off his range across the entirety of the album. You get the sonics and topics you'd expect of a 90s grunge album, but there's plenty of diversity within it. I like the first half more than the second, and it runs on the longer side for me, but I'm glad I listened.
I was surprised to realize that I only knew Soundgarden from their hits and not from individual albums. This is the first full album I've heard. I enjoyed it and I need to dig further and listen more.
Didn't do much for me but a few tracks i might revisit
Enjoyed this album more than I thought would
Alright album, not too bad, I guess you could listen to the sound of Soundgarden in your garden, but if it's too loud, the neighbours might complain... they always do :(
This is a solid release. The release year really surprises me, it's about 4-6 years earlier than I thought it was. This album continues to disprove the, "Ugg, music in the 90s sucked" argument. That being said, and other than a couple tracks that still get frequent replay on the radio like 'Black Hole Sun' and 'Fell on Black Days,' this album doesn't really entice me to come back to it. It feels very much like a foundation for future music that has since supplanted it—in some cases by the very same artists.
I was only familiar with the singles before listening to this, and I can't say I'm itching to add the whole album to my collection. I probably would have enjoyed it more closer to when it came out, but for some reason I never sought out any Soundgarden beyond what the radio gave me. Anyway, solid stuff here. 3.5.
The album that first comes to mind when I think of the classic “Grunge” sound. This album of course features the one that everyone knows “Black Hole Sun” but there is so much good content here. Yes, some of the tracks do give off the vibe of sounding similar, so I could see why some may not like this one as much- however, I think this is paced well enough to make up for it.
This is a very average album that seems to recycle all sorts of hard rock tropes. It all sounds very derivative. I doubt I will play this again. 3/5
This doesn't seem bad but it's so easy to be background music. No real notes, could be I missed something.
It's Soundgarden
Um ótimo álbum, não conhecia ainda.
Favourite song - Black Hole sun
A bit heavy for my liking. But it'll grow on me, I'm sure.
Don’t love the sound mix, but a solid 90s rock and roll offering
It was ok, run of the mill grunge pretty much all sounds the same in the end.
Kind of dig it samo mi se ne sluša sad. 3.5
Some good mid 90s grunge.
Good grunge
I’ve love Black Hole Sun for a while. Still love it (played it again after listening to the full album) but the rest of the album didn’t grab me. I didn’t dislike it but it didn’t wow me.
I think a little goes a long way here. Fell on Black Days and Black Hole Sun: perfect songs, perfect encapsulations of the genre. Then, I don’t care, pick 4-5 of the others and make a great EP.
Decent.
Probably good if you like hard rock, but not my style
I’m not a fan Chris Cornell’s voice so I’ve always had a bit of difficulty in liking Soundgarden but I do appreciate their guitars, especially on the heavier songs. The drummer is also really good, perhaps underrated
Black hole sun, let me cum 4 3
Familiar. Not favorite
Really solid genre (grunge) album. I prefer more technicality in music which is why I've never been the biggest grunge and punk fan, but I do respect these genres and their intentions related to music format. I found the album to be a bit long, but there is nice variation in song styles. My favorite tracks include: Mailman, Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, and Life Suicide.
The only song I have heard on this album is "Black Hole Sun". It could just be the albums I listen to, but it seems like they have gotten shorter and shorter over the years. This album is 70 minutes and has 15 tracks. Zach bryans newest album is 54 minutes and 16 tracks. It could just be a genre thing where rock albums are longer than others? I would be curious to see actual numbers with a larger data set. The first song on this album is a banger. Good energy. I think hard rock albums have a few tracks that tend to be toward the slower side but still make a great addition to the album all together, looking forward to hearing more of this album today.
Its ok. I did not like it in 1994, and I was not swayed.
RIP Chris Cornell. Solid soundgarden sound - heavy but refined, with Chris's iconic vocals. Overall solid 3* for me -- no tracks blow my mind as much as Black Hole Sun. Highlights: Black hole sun, drums in Spoonman
Decent. I was never a Soundgarden fan back in the day, but I remember liking Spoonman and Black Hole Sun when they were released, and those are both still great songs.
This is actually my first time with this album. I know the hits, this came out when I started really digging into music but I wasn’t interested in Soundgarden. Not surprisingly, it’s pretty good, though I think diluted in the 2020s by all the copycats that have since littered the Hard Rock station.
RIP Chris. When this album came up, I heard the sound of it in my head, and I have to admit that I wasn’t excited. Like Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell is one of those singers you can imitate by just going “Hrrrraaa” from the back of your throat. Listening to this album, I was spot on with the sound I heard in my head, but I was hoping to like it more than I thought I would. I didn’t. I thought I’d like it a 3, and I liked it a 3. Not bad. The entire band (including Chris) is very talented. It just didn’t hit for me.
2-3
The mood I took from it was fierce focus and attention - the music is full of energy and emotion, with vocals that are dynamic and do not become bland. Quite full textured grunge-rock. I recall the name; I don't recall actually listening to it before. I feel I need to re-listen a couple more times and when I do so, I know I will find more depth and interest of the music of that time and that place. So, three stars for potential and first experience.
Interesting lyrics but not the style of music that interests me
Hans jetzt nid so würklich vertüft gloset drum chanis au nid so mega guet bewerte. Het aber nid so schlecht tönt. Viellicht so 3.4/5?
my wave isch en geile 5/4. ersti paar songs bitz passiv glost aber find s tönt alles wunderbar crunchy und guuuet produziert. chris cornell singt haaammer sie mached vom cover her uf mystisch dunkel, ich find s isch alles sehr led zeppelin updatet uf d 90er title track isch seeehr geil, de break vorem giti solo gfallt mer. s solo isch au geil. plus am schluss hets de hard days night akkord. head down isch no cool aber d hook wird nöd spannender mit de ziit black hole sun kenntmer glaub. d leslie gitarre oder whatever da isch idch geeeil. hook chuntmer bekannt vor. idch de poppigst bis etz oh mein gott albe ide 90er sind fucking lang. bi the day i tried to live BELTET de cornell hert aso ich finds no nice aber aj nöd meh.
This was on the radio when I was growing up. I loved Black Hole Sun after seeing the video at an impressionable age. I must have been 8 or so given the year. Haven’t listened to them on purpose much since then, save for playing a lot of lonely solo Rock Band in college, and 90s playlists that I am sometimes subjected to. I won’t say I hate or even can’t stand Soundgarden. I even get the appeal of Chris Cornell’s voice! But as I’m listening to this 30 years on… I can’t say that I miss this era of music. Maybe it’s because some bands in the later 90s took this sound and ruined it for me? Godsmack and the like certainly couldn’t have helped. I guess I just like the Portland scene from that era much more than Seattle. Or Duster and other slowcore bands. There was definitely much more interesting stuff going on in 1994 than you’ll hear about from most people. Sorry for the semi-rant. With that out of the way. I don’t hate this. There’s talent here. Like I said, Chris Cornell gets attention for his voice and it’s well deserved. I just don’t think this is the best distillation of what I want to hear in rock music. Personally anyway. It’s reaching for something but not getting there. Maybe trying to sound darker than they could realistically pull off. It’s just not for me, so I give this a 2.5 rounded up to 3. But barely. Usually a 3 is “I like this but I probably won’t listen again” but this one is more of a “not for me but I get why people like it”
Another one of those bands that I know of, have heard one mega hit song and didn’t know what they actually sounded like. I would describe them as Trent Reznor (NIN) and Foo Fighters’ friend who was almost in their respective bands but ended up doing their own thing. Also Soundgarden came way before Foo Fighters so I guess Foo fighters would be like the friend in this situation but Dave Grohl was too busy murdering Kurt Cobain at the time so he probably would’ve been like the friend of a friend in this situation. Black Hole Sun is the best song on this album and not just because of it’s super mega hit status, it’s just a great song composition wise. The only other song that kind of comes close but not really is Spoonman, fuck yeah Spoonman. I enjoy Chris Cornell’s vocals on pretty much every song but the background music is just kind of boring on most tracks. There are some outliers for this but even then I wasn’t blown away or anything. 6/10
Not a revaltory discovery, I don't feel like I've missed out from never listening to it. But I enjoyed spinning it a couple of times. And Black Hole Sun is, obviously, great.
Bit too much
3/5
Didn't age well in my opinion.
Real good. Nothing super stands out but its a solid 3-3.5 star album. Reliable. Let Me Drown is quite good and black hole sun is familiar. I do not like mailman but I'd listen to it if it was part of a vinyl.
It's a bit blah but I guess it's a fairly unique sound. Would be 2 stars but it gets an extra cause Black Hole Sun is just an absolute banger.
Didn't mind it, but by far didn't love it. Black Hole Sun was my favorite on this album.
Black Hole Sun is good. The rest is reasonable.
Pas trop mon style.
This was enjoyable, and more dynamic than I expected from the singles off this that I already knew well. I'd give it a 3.5 star if I could, but because it overstayed its welcome a bit, I'm dropping it down to a 3 star. Some of the songs are too long, and the album itself doesn't fully justify its 70-minute runtime for me.
44/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 I was 22 years old when this came out. I think that may be why I think grunge is an overrated subgenre of rock. They thought they were reinventing the wheel, but they were just rehashing the same old rock tropes, with dirtier hair and more heroin. It's a tough album to score. Fell on Black Days is good, Black Hole Sun is good and Spoonman is absolutely fantastic. The Day I Tried to Live isn't bad, but is about 4 minutes longer than it needed to be to make its point. The rest of the album is uninspired, generic and an outright chore to try to finish. The guitar parts often feel like they're the end product of a random riff generator. Chris Cornell's voice is often the song's only redeemable quality. So the album's high points save its overall score from falling in the two-star territory, but overall, it's mediocre. This won't go over well with all the 40something year olds who were teens when this came out. People tend to perceive whatever music they liked when they were 16 as the pinnacle of all music. They're usually wrong. I know it's subjective, but still, they're wrong. I appreciate that Soundgarden were bringing a more metallic feel to the punk-influcenced grunge movement, but aside from that, meh. Still, this bears repeating; Spoonman is a fucking banger.
This was ok, I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. It's definitely gotten a lot of critical acclaim, and is one of the big grunge albums from the time. I didn't think it was nearly as good as "Nevermind" though (although this might be way too high of a bar). The sound is alright, but I was honestly kind of bored a few times. Perfectly good album but in a genre that I don't think has aged particularly well, and has a few slow spots. Favorite song: Black Hole Sun Other: My Wave, Fell On Black Days, Spoonman, The Day I Tried To Live 12/16/23
Not my usual thing, but better than the average
Not exciting, got a whole lotta meat and no sides, some bops some where a drag.
Lots of songs I know on this one. In general I like this.
Liked only black hole sun
Grungy goodness, a little bit long in the tooth but some good tracks still
I'm a couple of songs in and this is definitely a little too dark for me. I like older Heavy Metal, but this newer stuff doesn't do it for me. My wife ha told me on several occasions that she really liked the lead singer, Chris Cornell (RIP), so I'll listen to the whole album, but it's not my favorite. I guess that's why we are all listening to these albums...to hear "new" music that we wouldn't normally listen to.
I've been recommended Soundgarden many times, and they are good, but not my jam. I'm really appreciative of the alternative tunings and timings in most of the songs, and they create a sound that is dense without being too heavy. A lot of these songs (Black Hole Sun, Spoonman) are genuine bangers, but not enough to push this to a 4.
Already heard this one on this list
Dark, Metallic, cross between Pearl Jam, Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Black Hole Song was the hit single from this album.
I thought this one was gonna be corny and of-its-time, but I'm really digging it. I'm about halfway through and it's a 3 star so far. If there are any more stinkers like Spoonman it may go down to 2. Finished - good stuff! Solid 3.
Bit of a slog to get through. Few good tracks on there but most drag on. Album definitely could have been about 5 songs shorter and hit much better. Never been a massive fan of Soundgarden, they fell on the wrong side of the grunge explosion, unlike Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam etc. Still not bad though, especially when you remove the attrition from the queue.
Screaming Elf!!!
Mid, nice to listen, but nothing special
It was ok. Not for me, but I can appreciate how incredible Chris’s voice is in every song. And “Black Hole Sun” will always be one of my favorite songs from that era. So three stars for that alone.
Popular songs are still good. The rest is just ok.
Sounds sadder in retrospect
Black Hole Sun is arguably the House of the Rising Sun of the 90's -- a big dirge, overplayed, inescapable. Still, I liked this record at the time -- my impression then was that it was one of the better executed grunge-band-goes-mainstream efforts. Soundgarden had an original guitar sound, sludgy and detuned and dirty, but not thrashy. And Chris Cornell had one of the most powerful voices in rock. They somehow seemed less corny than many of their peers. I was never a huge fan, but I had respect. Listening to this now, I'm struck by 1) how bluesy a lot of it is, 2) how incredible the rhythm section sounds, and 3) how much Soundgarden owes to Led Zeppelin. Stands up surprisingly well.
It's Soundgarden. 2-3
Fell On Black Days (changing time signature) Black Hole Sun Spoonman
Listened Before? Y Yep, it's Superunkown. I was never a huge Soundgarden fan, but I do recognize their popularity and influence. The hits on this album are overplayed, and unfortunately the deep cuts aren't good enough to make up for that. (unlike many of their grunge/alternative contemporaries). Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Fell On Black Days
As far as grunge goes it’s better than most tbh. Many of the songs have strange interjections or influences from range genres (psychedelic, jazz, blues) which makes for some pretty interesting, although still not amazing, songs. 6/10
3.4 rounded down. Well-known grunge, pivotal grunge album with equally well-known singles. My favourite album of theirs remains "Badmotorfinger."
FAVO: Fell on Black Days,
Sounded like some Seattle grunge rock. I can appreciate it but it is not my favorite.
Great mixing and guitar tones, I love the sound, and I want to like this more but if I hear Black Hole Sun ONE.MORE.TIME on the radio I will pull my hair out. Also, I respect Chris Cornell's vocal talent, I know what he does with his voice is superhuman but does it actually sound....good? Sometimes it seems to be on a spectrum of drunken marblemouth man to screaming banshee. Again, no disrespect but sometimes it kind of reminds me of those awful national anthem renditions where they'll hold the same note for 2 minutes to flex their talent and everyone just eats it up but it's actually really lame and obnoxious. Idk, just my piece.
Love Chris Cornell's voice but I think every song kinda sounds the same. It feels like generic rock with no emotion.
Boring but y'know loved black sun or wtv
It's so so good. But is it 4 stars good? There is so much great music out there.
Excellent vocal performance, great riffs and drumming. Black Hole Sun is fantastic. Did find it to be a little bloated and repetitive at points
Alright. Classic rock isn't really my thing but I didn't mind this.
Not my sorta music, but it's still quite good
Standouts: Black Hole Sun, The Day I Tried to Live, Spoonman, Fell On Black Days, My Wave, 4th Of July 3.5
I hope it was more punk but meh..
No es mi estilo pero me ha gustado más de lo que esperaba.
Way better than I expected. Took a bit to get into. Wish we had more that 5 star rating
Decent album, good drums. Great singing by Chris Cornell Best tracks: Let me drown Superunknown Black hole sun Spoon man 4th July
I remember this being more of a soundtrack of my youth, but on relisten, I wasn't really digging it. It was meandering. The sparser bits were great. But most was kind of meh.
Started off really strong, last half of the album was filled trash
granted I sort of skipped around
Way too long. Too polished. A handful of great songs though.
It’s just fine. I dunno.
Not a bad album really. I just was super into the last album I got on here & this one was a bit of a tone shift from the last. Wasn't in the mood, but I get why it made the list. Could easily be a 4/5 on a different day.
too long, got mildly annoying after black hole sun. 3.5
Way too long
