Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Standard and inoffensive swing / jazz with lots of trumpet. It sounds like they're having a lot of fun, but nothing really stood out to me.

mom would never let me get this wild

Fun and light. Good background music while doing something active.

It’s a fun album. A party album. I’m not a huge fan of Swing but this gets you going.

A shot of pure, lively fun. Great as a palate cleanser and proof that Prima’s chaos was a genuine art form, even if it’s not a world you’d live in.

Довольно дефлотный веселенький джазец, но чего-то особенного про него сказать не могу. Жанр такой, наверное, не для меня... Хотя ничего плохого тоже не могу сказать.

Pretty good for the 1950s, I would say, while also being not particularly something I would like to listen to much. The saxophone, in the wrong hands, can be quite an irritating sound, can't it. There's no question mark there, because that's rhetorical. It can be quite an irritating sound. Overall though, good energy, quite a lot of fun, glad to have heard, glad to put it back down.

It’s like an antique chair. “Wow more comfortable than I would have thought! Simple!” Three, somehow?

Pretty fun, 40 minutes is a lot of time for all that brass though...

Ahead of its time but also annoying at times

Nice intro into this Album a Day project. Hopefully the first of many :) I liked this one more than I thought I would. Not sure why I thought I wouldn't like it - maybe the old timey release date. Didn't know what to expect. Big sax - funky, bluesy swing jazz. Dancey. Some elements of humor. A little weird, but in an enjoyable way. Just a Gigolo is a jam for sure.

Calling this "the wildest" is an exaggeration, but this is definitely a spirited set of swing songs. The biggest highlights are when Prima and his wife trade lines back and forth, their chemistry is a ton of fun. There's a lot of humor throughout, and the playful closer is the highlight in that regard; who among us hasn't had a friend whose meatball-stealing tendencies have annoyed us? The fact that the vocals are the most interesting part of this naturally means that the instrumental songs fall a bit flat. While the music here is swinging, there's not enough to make it noteworthy on its own, at least to someone who has heard Little Richard run laps around the wildness on display here. Definitely a fun set of songs, but it's limited by the energy being medium high, not high.

Missing some good trumpet in the current mainstream music. The Lip is really catchy.

It's very one note, to the point where several songs are basically the same, but it's joyous and fun. It's not something I'd return to, but it would make for a great live show.

Skibbidy doo dar, swings finger in the air. Jazz hands. Meh, its okay.

Fun old album. Lot's of bops and very silly.

Just a Giggalo: Jazzy, reminds me of an Italian song on TikTok, vocal layering is insane. I love the saxophone and the percussion. (Nothing’s too good) for my baby: Her voice is so 50’s core - which makes sense as it’s an album from the 50’s. His voice has such a satisfying growl and there’s such a gentleness there. Bluesy. The lip: Really nice storytelling and enunciation. The cadence is reminiscent of rock and roll songs. I love the saxophone and how it mirrors a human reaction. Body and soul: Really nice trumpet (I said saxophone but my mum corrected me) break. And the gentle percussion really adds to it. This whole album reminds my mum of Fats Domino which I agree with. Oh Marie: I’ve heard this song before. Reminds me even more of that TikTok song which I’m sure will come up in this album. Basin Street Blues: Clearly inspiration of blues music. I like when he says random things and the saxophones (which I now think are trumpets) mimic it. Jump, Jive, An’ Wail: Feminism core Buona Sera: Such a soft and gentle song. Could definitely see this being played at a wedding. Night train: Aha! ‘Pennies from heaven’ is the song that’s been plaguing my mind this whole time. But, alas, this song is still lovely. A beautiful instrumental break with some piano (which has been missing from other songs) (I’ll be glad when you’re dead) you rascal you: Very jolly song for the title Banana split for my baby: Again, very jolly, it reaffirms the strong storyline the album has been following. The woman is noticeably no longer singing which is a shame. Whistle stop: Ironically, the lyrics are “bring her back to me” which mirrors the lack of a female singer. I like the actual whistling included. Be mine (little baby): A bit of an underwhelming end to the album, but it was coherent and the saxophone/trumpet was great.

I will take your word for it

Joy was oozing out of everything here. It was fun to listen to, but nothing memorable. Maybe, it is because of my taste.

Not my thing but I appreciate it

Fun swingy album

Catchy tunes

Just starting the third song, enjoyable album, not something I would actively choose to listen to but it's not because it's not my kind of music, just more of a rarer listening choice I'd probably feel more joyous listening to this if I wasn't so tired so we'll see, I'll sleep midway through and listen to the rest in the morning when I have energy I will say the fact he voices king Louie in the Jungle book is just making a whole lot of sense, it feels so right, he has a great voice, I like jazz, need to listen to more Tomorrow, start on Basin Street Blues!

Мафия 2 балдежная игра, балдежный альбом (устал за ~3песни до конца)

This album represents that 50s era swing/jazz era to a tee. I’m not necessarily mad at it, but I’m not necessarily brought in - songs are fun, have that Vegas jazz sense of humor, and you can’t not be entertained- but I won’t be making any argument for or against this. There might be some general bias in that my day prior was Miles Davis “In A Silent Way”…. There’s no way to equate either of these in any way. But it’s telling that I was already immediately ready to throw Miles back on and put this back on the shelf. I will say- “(I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead) You Rascal” may be one of the funniest songs I have ever heard.

Monday blues

Not particularly something I'd call great, but this was a lot of fun. It's a pretty enjoyable record that flies by. I could probably be more critical, but I'm just going to leave it by saying I had a good time listening while not really getting more from it than the vibes. Overall: 3.3/5

2/1000

Não me pegou mas reconheço a qualidade

I picture a young David Lee Roth in his bedroom listening to this on repeat and taking copious notes.

good vocals but the album feels like the same song

Classic. Not really my temporary haha

its alright, but I think it suffers from the limited range of goodness which all 50s albums on here, other than the Latin American/jazz ones. He's good fun, and the lady singer is also very good. The Sax bits and more jazzy stuff is probably the best in my opinion. There's a few medleys as well, which I guess is a good way to combine stuff or have an instrumental bit at the start of a song. Quite a lot of them sound the exact same. Favourite songs: first one, body and soul, jump, jive an wail. Overall around 5/10

I love this type of music, makes me think of romantic golden era hollywood movies and better times.. It was however a mixed bag on an album, at it's best it made my heart swell, at it's worth I had to skip beacuse it was an irritant..

good old style tunes, but not something I'd stick on

Kinda buns twin but it was fun.

I quite like a range of jazz and some big band, though my knowledge of these is pretty limted, this kind of fits in there with these probably swing or somesuch in there too. It seems to be trying so hard to be fun that it left me feeling more grumpy. Sure it's just me...

Idk it sounds old but good

Bastante bien. Para mí que no me gusta tanto este tipo de música se me hizo un toque largo de terminar, pero bastante bueno.

104. jazz

Not really my thing but I can still appreciate a fun swing album when I hear one. I would never go out of my way to listen to anything like this but it's still good enough at what it does to keep me entertained. I do like the revolving door of vocalists, making it pretty dynamic on top of the already super fun and lively instrumental.

Pretty wild. I don’t know about the wildest…..

Nice stuff

Classic!

Bouncy, happy swinging jazz. Made me smile.

old school jazz not bad but not something that blows me away

It's alright. More background music.

Hauskaa fallout musiikia

Me recordó mucho a mi tía P

i like how italian it is

Some fun and silly songs! Likely won't revisit

pretty good and likeable thats for sure. love the instrumentals

play that band music white boy

Really enjoyed this, sounds like the songs were more about just having fun with the music, instead of taking it too seriously.

im just a gigolo too brother

I liked it. I like Louis Prima. I'm not super into this album but it does have a lot of good tunes.

pior que eh bacaninha, hein. ótima soundtrack pra um filme que se passa nos anos 50, só tem uma que me irritou mto não sei pq. de resto bão demais fantástico que do nada soltam um pião do baú rapidão como quem nao quer nada.

Really fun album. What a wonderful voice. The album a bit “one note” as far as variety but it was a great listen while driving into work. The power in his voice and the swinging jazz were a great album from the list. I feel 3 is too low but I can’t quite get to 4. 3.75/5

Bangers.

This is a fun album nothing more nothing less. Why does this remind me of Lou Vega

He really IS the wildest of the era. Good pace, good grooves, cool dude

favorites: just a gigolo; for my baby; the lip

Sounds like it should be from the 1930's. Liked it but was anachronistic.

thought this was just music played in movies

Not my style of music! However, the album is incredibly cheeky in its lyrics and energy which makes for an entertaining listen. I don't know if this album is an accurate encapsulation of what the 60's felt like, but it certainly transports you to a different time.

Just For You I'd Learn To Bake A Pie 1001 Albums Generator 241 (3/6/2026) I mean, in 1956, this really might have as wild as it got. I can imagine this totally floored Silent Generation parents when young Boomers put this on the turntable. I mean, those huge vocal harmonies and nonsensical wordless vocals on I Ain't Got Nobody are a hell of a way to start an album. While I love the pure playfulness of The Wildest (I mean seriously, these guys are really enjoying themselves), there are moments like The Lip that are a bit corny. However, check out the quick interpolation of In The Hall of the Mountain King in Body And Soul. What a clever idea. Buona Sera has an undeniably latin flare (perhaps a tango?) in its first half. The Wildest is probably the best of these traditional pop/crooner albums that I've heard so far, but it's still just not my style of music. Louis Prima is a really convincing frontman though. 3/5. Favs: Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody (Nothing's Too Good) For My Baby Buona Sera Least Fav: The Lip

Best Track - "Jump, Jive An' Wail"

Okay, this is probably the oldest album I've had yet, and it sure sounds it. It might have been the Wildest album of its time, but music has evolved so much in the intervening decades that it's not even close to the title in modern times. It's enjoyable enough, but 50s music in general tends to sound extremely dated, and this falls victim to that. Lyrics are okay, though often uninteresting. Jazz can be a phenomenal genre, but this is more a curio for people interested in the popular sounds of the 1950s and less an essential album for everyone.

Music from this age has a charm to it that can't be recreated anymore, and the early rock and roll sound mixed with jazzy trumpets and saxophones make this album great even after 70 years. 3.8/5

Swingy! And this guy is a gigolo!

Not the sort of thing I'd normally listen to. I'd like it if I was at a themed restaurant, but I wouldn't listen again.

Jazz never been my type of music, but this one was surprisingly an easy listening. I mean at no point did I want to turn it off thinking “what the f is this”. So I guess it’s ok, for background listening or something.

This is a really fun album. I couldn't listen to it too often, but great to listen to every few years.

Ihan leppoisaa 3,5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

3/5 nice

This is a fun little album! Didn't drag, fun songs. Much better than I assumed. 3/5

This brought back early memories of a slew of Italian/American singers. Although Louis was one of the earliest with deep roots founded in New Orleans jazz. An interesting listen.

Reminded me of visiting my grandmother as a child

Fun background album. Started strong and fizzled over its run time. 2-3 stars

Louis Prima made on of my fav Disney songs ever, and I knew ‘Pennies From Heaven’, so I was excited to check this out !! This album has such good vibes !! So jazzy, amazing basslines and groovy trumpets. Prima’s singing and the backing vocals are great too. Fav song is ‘Just A Gigolo’.

Well gee whiz, mister! These "soitenly" are some grand tunes! Favorite song: Whistle Stop.

Well... this was a case of maybe it would have been best not to go down a rabbit hole about the artist. The music fell into the category of something I wouldn't normally listen to but was pretty good! A bunch of classic songs that have been covered numerous times. But once I delved into the history of Louis Prima it just seemed... weird. He was married so many times and each time it seemed like the person he married was 20... no matter how old he was. And that person was also someone that he tried to (successfully sometimes, unsuccessfully others) launch their singing career. Which is just... creepy.

this was a nice vibe. it's so funny bc david said this would be the weirdest album i'd listen to. not true! hellooo, sigur ros?

This is what your mom plays while she makes a Sunday bolognese, and I plan to do just that on Monday.

Okay! Great first Songa and then it vegane a little repetetive imo. But he has an amazing voice and great banter and pace in the songs.

Enjoyed! Recognized a couple of songs.

Just a buzz that you get from these albums. Fun, raucous and you’re never sure where the next bar goes. Good stuff.

Fun and frantic cooking music

Just a fun album!

Of the time. Nice vibe though, comedic, enjoyable feel Think this guys mental instability is being misjudged as personality You're enjoying scrambled eggs, then someone slaps a fistful of jam in the middle of it. I'll try it. But not again.

Enjoyed it. Won’t listen again though probably Parts gave me fallout song vibes which is always a bonus

Bit of fun, but there’s a time and place.

Surprisingly good. It really swings on the good songs, and I can feel how Louis Prima enjoys performing. But there’s a downside to it: There"s so much enjoyment and playfulness that I want to turn it down a little after a while. I don’t think I can match the level of happiness in this kind of music through a full album. Favourite songs: Bueno Sera and Just a Gigolo/Ain’t Got Nobody

Some bops, some annoying tracks, but all around not bad. 3/5

no lo completé pero estaba bueno.

I'm quite fond on this genre in a more limited quantity, a whole album is a little too much. The lyrics aren't great, but I don't think I mind all that much. And why isn't he paying for that banana split? Three stars. (Favorite track: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody.)

It was good-sounding, nostalgic album that gives the same feeling as you have when listening to Fallout soundtracks. Actually, should get back to playing the game again...

It’s fun and uplifting. The sax parts are awesome! Fallout soundtrack to my ears.

Big band sound - lot’s used in movies

Yeah it's some pretty alright swingy jazz numbers. Nothing amazing but it's pretty alright.

Recognised the voice straight away as King Louie from Jungle Book. Good album to listen to whilst working, but it's not really my style. 3/5 clearly talented, but not something I'd choose to listen to again.

Too crooney

The tunes are good enough, in that jazzy swingy sense. But the lyrics are borderline nonsensical (intentionally, I suppose) and Prima's no Sinatra. Might simply be an unfortunate consequence of the passage of time but the comedy half of this comedy record does not hold up at all. As of now the only person I can picture really crowing about this album is Italian-American octogenarian homebodies and Tim Heidecker's hipster character from I Think You Should Leave. It's a shame because instrumentally, it's rock-solid toe-tapping jazz beats all the way through. Though I did keep thinking it was going to crack into When The Saints Go Marching In half the time. fav tracks: I Ain't Got Nobody, Body and Soul

A fun swing album, even if not an essential listen

This album was definitely fun. Danceable.

It’s always interesting to listen to music from the 50s. I’m sure this was a certified banger back in the day. It flowed well, I thought it was okay. But I think it’ll take more than just some simple swings to get me to vote more than a 3 on stuff like this.

Only really liked the first song, everything else was underwhelming tbh. Not my cup of tea for sure

Uma viagem para os anos 50, em muitos sentidos. Prima é um frontman muito carismático para os padrões da época mas até para as sensibilidades atuais. Muitos solos de uma nota, o que é hype d+.

2.4/5 Really surprised with this one. Thought I was going to hate it but I was bopping along to most of the album.

A lot of these songs feel like great choices for 80s/90s movie montages.

Joyful

it is exactly what reviews claim it to be: joyous, makes one want to dance.

Liked it

Loved Keely Smith’s voice! I miss that full bodied sound! Liked the harmonies but the beginning of like every song sounded like Pennies from Heaven. Favorite lyric was by far, “When you’re dead and in your grave, no more ravioli will you crave.”

a very classy album, i did enjoy it. to me it is a quite good background (but quality) music. i like the swing/jazz in the album, i didn't look into the lyricism but i believe the lines are often witty. plus, prima's voice suited me just well.

Well, not bad but not my cup of tea. Nice background music though.

Wasn't into it at the start, about halfway through I was convinced I was listening to a Paolo Nutini album and started enjoying it for some reason. Would like to give a 2.5 but rounded up to a 3 as the back end of the album perked me up!

Liked his energy and storytelling

nice, fun sound

Interessante companhia

Easy listening some might say

very fun beats!!! i’ve heard some of these songs before!! this would cheer me up on an off day. might need to revisit for a confidence boost! i love this style of music, i just don’t often choose to listen to it, which is odd!

I have a soft spot for music like this. It’s charming. There are a few songs on here that I have heard thanks to cinema and tv shows. It was a quick, effortless listening. Would throw on again for some background music as you don’t really need to actively enjoy this.

This album wasn’t necessarily bad, but this genre’s never been my favorite. Also didn’t like how aggressive the horns were in some songs. Probably won’t go out of my way to listen again.

Oldy Jazz mood

I liked it! So much familiar stuff on here. Not the kind of thing I'd listen to every day, but fun background for a dinner party or something.

The Wildest is a great title for this album cause it couldn't be more fitting. It's also the album's greatest strength because the energy loosely contained in this album is great. It honestly feels like it was a total blast to record this album. Now thats obviously not based on anything other than the atmosphere cause for all I know Louis could have been a real monster to be around, but the impression I get from this album is that it was a ton of fun. There's a couple huge massive hits on this album that I don't know enough about to say whether or not he wrote these songs or which ones were covers, but I enjoyed almost every track on this album and the stand outs were "You Rascal You", "The Lip", " and "Banana Split for My Baby" (which I know isn't technically on the original album, but I liked it so I'm including it). But for all the songs I enjoyed there were a few songs that didn't really do anything for me or were kinda boring cause they were more of the same. But as a whole a super solid album for the time with a respectable amount of variety for 1956.

"Just a Gigolo" - this is very recognisable, there is something so familiar in its tune as well as the vocal style. it reminds me that i actually DO quite like jazz, when there are in fact lyrics. "Nothing's too Good for my Baby" - the speed of the sax/trumpets whatever is very pleasing to the soul. the voices bled so well together its GORGEOUS. spent the whole album waitinf for pennies from heaven. it turns out that IS in fact a louis prima song which makes me feel a bit smug...

Not my vibe. But see how others could enjoy. Plus the guy from Jungle Book!?

Great for a Mad Men-themed cocktail party, too corny for the morning commute

I enjoyed this! It’s funny to think of this as music to sit down and listen to. I don’t mean that meanly. Louis Primas music is now known probably mostly for commercials and soundtracks, but this was fun and a good listen.

This is actually pretty fun, I had never heard it before and sometimes I almost feel like I can hear inspiration for people like Tom Waits. It's at least not a mediocre british act from the mid 90s

Enjoyed 👍

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵! is lively, brassy and full of personality, but vocal jazz just isn’t the style that grabs me. The album’s mix of jump-blues energy, big-band flair and comedy routines has its charm, yet the constant showmanship can feel a bit excessive if you’re not fully into this kind of performance. It’s easy to appreciate the momentum and musicianship, but the record lands more as entertaining background fun than something I’m deeply drawn to.

makes me wanna dance under the street lights

I felt this album was VERY 50s - in my mind I could feel myself Christmas shopping at a department store in the 1950s while one of these songs played in the background. There were some pretty serious saxophone moments in there, that was pretty exciting! I feel like there’s not enough saxophone nowadays… It made me want to dance, and any album that makes me want to dance is not half bad in my mind!

I am not a fan of rap at all however, this was really damn good and I would highly consider owning a physical copy

Quite entertaining

This was a bop, favorite track was Body and soul

Yesterday, my album was a bossa nova, which reminded me of the brief resurgence of lounge in the mid-to-late nineties. The Wildest! by Louis Prima reminds me of the brief resurgence of swing/big band from the same period. This album is a lot of fun. Every track is upbeat and light-hearted, and the record sprinkles quirky humor throughout. I've added the record to my collection, and I'm sure I'll listen again, but this style of music has never really grabbed me. And while this album certainly is a premier exemplar of the genre, it didn't really grab me either. But at just over 30 minutes, it did't overstay its welcome and gave me a few smiles throughout. Three stars.

Cool little album, not the greatest. 3 stars

3,25 not bad

It was an enjoyable listen. Certainly not something that I would have sought out. Made the ride to work feel like I was in a Nora Ephron movie.

nice album with good instrumentals. Listened to it at 4 a.m. in the morning so It felt a little repetitive which was a little tiring. good vibes. favorite track is buona sera. overall I would give a 3.5/5 because It’s not an album I would prefer to listen on a daily basis.

Lots of hootin and hollerin

Fun time

Not really my type of music but im gladly listening

Folkligt, festligt, trivsamt.

Party! Kul!

Fett och lär ju varit episkt live. Mycket bra när man behövde kräm de sista kilometern på skidfar men blir lite väl swingigt och tutigt i längden. Men asså…. Var Treme bättre än The Wire?

These songs are fun.

Very good, my favourite parts were the saxophone solos, very jazzy

nice enough

Some good, chill jazz; nothing much to note, didn't rock my world but y'know it was good.

A mixture of jazz Melodys, gibberish improvising, changes of tempo and some R&B sounds with some Latin mixed in. ‘Jump, jive and wail’ and ‘Bueno sera’ are the standouts but it’s an entertaining period piece, 12 years before ‘king of the swingers’

Nicht schlecht

It’s cool

Pretty fun and funny, the jokes and sentiments (e.g. "I'll be glad when you're dead") are surprisingly timeless and relevant.

Of its time, but it's fun. Energetic at least, which I can't say for all the folk/rock/indie shit that happens a lot on this list.

I enjoyed this at first but annoying after a while

jazzy 1950s album, i really like his voice and some of the songs, upbeat and feel good, just not super into 1950s music

Jump jive

Fun and lively although even the shorter songs seem a fair bit longer. Would be great if this was the band at your house party in the middle of summer

I actually didn't hate it like I thought I would.

I immediately feel like I'm watching a Nora Ephron movie that takes place in NYC. Or like I'm in a bougie grocery store in NY. Or like I'm in the Olive Garden. This album was really fun to listen to. Some of the lyrics are super wacky. Would give 3.5 stars.

Good. A fun time even.

Just a Gigolo makes me feel like Im in Goodfellas. Or first half of Malcolm X (when he was actually cool). Second song holds up. So far I feel like going to a bar, ordering a cognac and smoking a cigarette while treating women terribly (this is Denzel in Malcolm X). Body and Soul sounds like every song played during the 50’s. Jump, Jive, an’ Wail got me jumping and jiving but not much wailing going on here at 11:13 in the morning at the Rossin residence. Overall this was an enjoyable album.

https://www.popmatters.com/pops-and-the-wildest-2639825643.html Interesting article on King Louis’ influences in Louis Armstrong and New Orleans culture. Also some interesting stuff online about Lion King Musical and racial implications for certain character names relating to these two artists because the writers were afraid of NAACP backlash since it was called ‘Jungle book’. Not to to forget the third Louis: Louis Jordan. Alright let’s listen to some honkey jazz ‘T1 Just a gigalo’ is very familiar . That switch to ‘I ain’t got no buddy’ is very nice. Only a minute or two not the album but it feels like I’m just listening to a jam version of ‘Pennies from heaven’. Great ending. T2 alright now this is a jazz album. I don’t know any Keely smith songs but she sounds familiar. T8 buona sera - this is beautiful T9 night train - ooooh baby Was in an uber today and he said that his friend was an 83 year old man that died 5 years ago, and when they were kids he went out with Keely Smith.

Fun as fuck! So many classics on here! Great fun album and old school as hell

Overall Rating: 6/10 Favorite Song: Buona Será

3,0 - Die beiden Medleys sind super, der Rest schwankt zwischen angenehm hörbar und leicht nervig. So ist es am Ende ein nettes Album Highlights: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody, Basin Street Blues / When It's Sleepy Time Down South

Louis Prima seems like he's one of the quintessential singers for that Italian-American big band jazz style of music. I don't have much exposure to this kind of music, but the energy and vibes of the music is fun and upbeat, and Louis's voice carries a lot of power with it. "Oh Marie" stood out to me, but a different song of Louis's, "Pennies from Heaven" will remain the one I always think about for this kind of music.

Just A Gigolo is fun and upbeat. The sax solos sound amazing. For my baby is a typical '50s love song. Not my thing The lip is fun but nothing special. Body and Soul starts off with a nice, quiet sax solo before drums appear and it gets more interesting. Sounds good. Hey Marie is cool, uses the sax well as well. Basin Street Blues is great. Sounds similar to most of the other songs and the lyrics are especially good. Jump, Jive an' Wail is not for me. The sax is good as always. Buona Sera is another boring love song. Nothing special. Night Train is purely instrumental. It sounds great. You rascal you is a weird song. Not a big fan. Banana split for my baby is catchy but not very interesting. Whistle Stop is a fun song The album overall is fun, the sax is great in every song.

I like it, but it's a little too jazzy for my taste.

5.5/10 - The album has passion and energy in spades. Louis brings a lot of energy, but it’s too much energy for a full album. The instrumentation is good, but it’s very similar sounds for the entirety of the album and that sound is not something I find myself wanting to go back to regularly.

I want to give this more, but 3.5/5 seems fair considering what seemed like 4 or 5 songs all start with the same progressions.

It's alright, to slow for my personal taste. 6/10

Fun and easy listening

Does what it does very well. Although I’m not a fan of big band, or most jazz with vocals, everyone on the record seems to be having a good time and it’s a decently uplifting listen. I’m not likely to revisit it, but I understand the appeal.

So this is where The Ramones learned you only really need one riff/melody! So much fun though. Just A Gigalo, sadly, I only knew before from David Lee Roth! Vocals get a little Shel Silverstein at the end! Love this age of music, where peiple sand about banana splits and sime things.

One of the looser, more alive albums of the 50s. Most records from that era feel locked into their lanes, but Louis Prima cuts through all that. He is not reinventing anything, he just attacks the material with so much fire that it feels fresh anyway. The album cover sums it up in one shot. Loud, goofy, full of motion. Outdated in spots, but still a genuinely fun listen. Solid 8/10.

It’s been one hell of a week on the site for me. 4/5 days this week have been Jazz albums. Jazz is a genre I find to be astoundingly average and generally not something I ever seek out due to the lack of planning out the songs (Something directly inherent to what makes Jazz what it is) and coordination. It often just doesn’t interest me that much, often to the point of boredom. This, however, was pretty damn good. Perhaps that's because there's also a lot of Blues in here, and it all feels very planned out and not like one constant freestyle. Maybe it's because of his outstanding voice. Of the 4 Jazz albums I heard this week, I would go back to 2 of them. This is one of those 2. When Jazz is planned out and clearly coordinated like this and makes a semblance of sense musically, it’s generally pretty good. Plus, all I can imagine in my head when listening to this album is a funny Orangutan singing, and that just makes me happy. Look at the album art, look at that goofy guy. He’s having the time of his life. My favorite song on this album was the opener, the absolute classic “Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody - Medley”. Obviously this is very dated, as it’s one of the oldest albums in the book, but it’s still very easy and fun to listen to today and I’m glad I got to spend some time with it. I'm going to give it a high 3. Bonus, having never heard of Louis Prima before this outside of The Jungle Book, I later got to identify his music by sheer coincidence outside of this project, and immediately recognized that it was him. Getting to learn about new artists and then being able to identify them later on is one of the coolest parts of this entire project!! This was a very fun record by King Louie. 🦧❤️

I was honestly a bit scared to get into this album as I had no idea what to expect from Louis Prima on his 1956 album The Wildest!, but by the time this quick 32 minutes came to an end I was pleasantly surprised with the overall output. This album is full of very fun and groovy energy that feels perfect for defining the 50s as a whole. Louis Prima has such a great time recording this album and comes off in such a playful manner that it is truly hard to hate anything here. The back-up vocalists also do a great job helping support the songs here and making them feel even more lively to help add to Louis' leading vocals. The instrumentation as well feels very jazzy and yet also treading into more of a Pop sound like what mainstream music would see in the 60s as well. I am not going to say The Wildest! is amazing, but it does the job in helping a very lost decade in music find its' footing and be a defining piece of its' time. This is exactly what I hope to find when I go through any other albums of the 50s.

I'd have to defer to people who like this sort of thing to know how good it is in general. Some nice sounds but not something I'd reach for.

Strong 3

I like it when he makes the funny noises. Generally enjoyed this one, it has a good jazz tone, but the quality is a little inconsistent. Wasn't huge on Keeley Smith's singing.

Iconic style that marked an age. Not a lot that really appeals to me, but I can't deny the quality

Barely listened, but I’ll give him a three. Sounds like good, classic, old music that I don’t feel like listening to. It’d be fine in the different setting somewhere

This was cool.

Enjoyed this more than I was expecting! One of my first thoughts was how much I would love to be out on the town hearing this music in a live setting dancing, drinking and enjoying the evening with a beautiful woman. For once in a long minute it def sounds like this is a worthy album to listen to before you die.

Fun, easy listening, jazzy stuff.

Just a great sound, rhythm, and pace

This is some shit David Lynch would use to score the most unhinged scene you've ever seen

FALLOUT 4!!

decent

Having a run of music I’m unfamiliar with. Not my jam, but it’s a fun album. 2.5/5

Lovely for the time

Fallout 4 vibes. Classic 50’s sound. Fun and funky

Kul storbandsvibe! Inte så mycket mer än det, men bra bakgrundsmusik om man vill ha peppig jazz :)

Very enjoyable. Reminds me that g grandma Linwood.

Best Song: Buona Sera. Good vibes, hard hitting instrumentation, a great vocal performance. I liked it. Worst Song: Body and Soul. What was the point of this weird, highly referential instrumental track in the middle of the album? It wasn't bad, but it absolutely clashed with everything else. Overall: I don't often like music of this era and genre, but I have to admit that there is a silly and upbeat energy to it that I found myself enjoying. Not for all circumstances, and there are enough slow/instrumental tracks to dull my enthusiasm, but it is definitely better than I expected.

Good fun - his version of Night Train is fantastic

TIL: I weirdly like Luis Prima. Huh. Also the voice of King Louie in the original Jungle Book!

This was fun, pure old Vegasy lounge show. Highlights: The original Jump, Jive 'n Wail, Night Train, I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You.

Ab und inklusive "Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days" eher anstrengend

I'm on for a bit of jump jazz, a bit of novelty fifties humorous music - There's An Awful Lot of Coffee In Brazil being a favourite. This is short and sweet, a cortado if you like. Not more than three stars but hey I'm sure Louis is not bothered.

5.7/10

Even though I’m not very familiar with classic jazz, the groove, the humor, the live-band chemistry — none of it ever seems to fade. I wish I could have seen they perform this live. (I couldn’t stream this album in my country, so I had to listen on YouTube.)

Cover 6 I didn't hate this but this isn't something I'd come back to, though I do recognize it's playability. Some of the best songs are I'm Just s Gigolo and Jump, Jive, an' Wail.

Heel erg tijdsgeest gevoelig. Een paar gave nummers die nog steeds erg cool en relevant zijn, maar een groot deel van de stijlfiguren zijn te 50’s voor mij.

Nice upbeat feel and sounds like he enjoyed making his music but not noteworthy for me

Interesting and solid album with some good songs. Didn't realise I was listening to King Louis at first. He's got a great voice but I'm not sure the music stood out enough to warrant a lot of further listening for me.

This Louis is indeed King Louie from the Jungle Book. Pretty neat. 3/5

It makes a lot of sense that they cast this guy as a singing ape

I'm trying to keep an open mind because this really isn't my type of music. It's.. interesting? I like to listen to different things, but this isn't my cup of tea. The second song, with Keely Smith, I guess - ? - was pleasant. She las a lovely voice.

Fun sound.

Priimaa 50 luvun swingiä. Tässä on hyvä henki. I Ain't Got Nobody on tunnettu kappale. Parhaat: Just A Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody, The Lip, Oh Marie

Really Falloit-y, liked it

6 / 10

I'm familiar with "Just A Gigolo" because of David Lee Roth's cover, and "Jump, Jiv, An Wail" being featured... well, everywhere, but otherwise this was all new. Prima has a great, classic voice, and the music is great classic jazz! While I can't say I'd come back to it with any frequency, I cannot deny that this was a fun and enjoyable listen.

Fun jazzy old-school vibe. Some of the songs were a bit weird, opening with "Just a Gigolo" is crazy, don't know if it meant something different back then?? The Lip was a vibe

This was much more enjoyable than I expected.

Raro pero como mucho swing

Definitely wild.

Not bad

128/1001 Louis Prima - The Wildest! Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ I had fun with this, this morning. The swinging jazz and Prima's voice work. However, I can't foresee a time when I'll reach for this...

Enjoyed! The duet with his wife was probably my favorite. Definitely swings. Neat that he was the orangutan from The Jungle Book.

I want to go high 3 but really this is a low/maybe mid 3. Some very nice glimpses of raw emotion vocally though

I love this album.

There's some pretty funny stuff on there. I'm a big fan of "I'll be glad when you're dead".

Very 1950s but not my taste

This was pretty good. I didn’t love all the tunes, but overall it was a good experience. I can definitely hear the beginnings of the transition from jazz and even big band to rock and roll. So I guess it’s pretty monumental in that way. I don’t know that I’ll ever go back to it, but it was still a good experience.

This is fine? Not really into that oldies stuff too much but it's good for what it is

What a fun album!

I've never heard Louis Prima before nor i ever knew his name.Big Band swing in the 50's was a dance band and this one had a humour as well. How about the songs now: Just A Gigolo has an amazing rhythm(the piano wow) and it's a fave of mine,I Ain't Got Nobody though it's not a fave at all, (Nothing's Too Good ) For My Baby is a nice jazzy fun song and i liked this because of the intergration of the female fantastic vocals, The Lip has the same piano like in Gigolo i think but in different key, humorous conversation like singing duet makes this enjoyable, Body and Soul is a more ''serious''jazzy instrumental number, constant change of rhythm gives it an interesting twist, Oh Marie has an uptempo beautiful rhythm,i laughed a lot with the so called lyrics, fun, Basin Street Blues gets me a ''my baby just cares for me'' vibe with male vocals/When It's Sleepy Town down South really has too much gibberish in an annoying scale, Jump,Jive An Wail is quite rhythmic and fun,50's proper dancing song, clapping hands and men throwing girls up in the air kinda thing,Swinging your heart out, Tango like introed Buona Sera has Italian lyrics and swinging progression(Do Wap-Do Wap),switches in idyllic Tango rhythm again and ends up swinging again with romance vibes, Instrumental Night Train has some interesting breaks and instruments interactions that i really enjoyed, Humorous I'll Be Glad When You're Dead has hilarious lyrics(some raviolli mentioning and meatballs) and fun improvisations from the band. Overall it's a fun jazzy/Big Band swing 50's album that was really easy to review as the songs were short and humorous.

Hassua vanhaa musiikkia. Hyvää fiilistä sekä hienot instrumentaaliosiot. Vaatii kuitenkin juuri oikeanlaisen fiiliksen ettei ole ärsyttävää.

Ganz cool, aber langsam reichts

Album No. 0031 on my list. I had never heared of Louis Prima before, but it was nice to listen to something rather old, actually. (As far as I see it, it's the 3rd oldest album on the 1001 albums list.) While not necessarily my favorite genre, this was a fun listen - decent, fun songs. Maybe a little too much "blabbering" in some (you'll know what I mean when you listen to it), but I had fun. Nothing outstanding, but a fun collection of songs. Personal favorites: "Just A Gigolo", "Buona Sera", "Banana Split for my Baby". 3/5 stars!

Super, super fun. This is the music you dance to in your underwear on a Sunday morning while you make pancakes for your wife, who’s sleeping in.

Super fun. I love this era

Sounds great as one song on a mix tape or a soundtrack - a whole album is a little bit too much. I really like the vocals and the vibe is fun but not sure I would readily come back for a whole album...

I had it in my head that Louis Prima was a crooner, and I was happy to be wrong. While I recognized several of these songs, listening to all of them together left me thinking a couple things: 1) Louis Prima probably knew how to have a good time, and 2) he could hang with the big-band dudes and crooners, but this music feels looser and more personality-forward. I can totally see this killing in early Vegas. I bet he was a fun, boozy hang back in the day.

I've heard many songs in movies by Louis Prima, but never looked him up. I'm in the mood for this genre every once in a while, and I'm glad I have a name for it now. His voice is really timeless and there's a lot of freedom with the instruments. 6/10

Solid jazz. I don’t generally love jazz, but this is pretty fun and lively. Plus, it gives me some context for Van Halen’s early, David Lee Roth era. 3.8/5

The horns and scatting does get a bit grating after a while. I feel like this isn't really an "album" of music to listen to in one go, it's just a collection of songs.

This reminds me of a hot first date with a Glenda at Fazoli's where I purchased the baked spaghetti and she had the italian sandwich. We even got free refills on our drinks ;)

I didn't feel like finishing this album. Not that it was bad, it's not, but I just wasn't in the mood to really listen to this genre of music. But it's not bad at all, oldies but goodies, but if I were in the right headspace I'm sure I would've finished it. Despite never hearing of the guy or his music, I can definitely tell this guy had a much larger influence on popular music than we think.

Muy quemado pero al menos no es lo que siempre tiran en los 50 Nota: 2.9

Good fun. Great voices from Louis and his wife

Pleasant jazz/blues/swing album with plenty of catchy tunes and memorable vocals.

I thought it was pretty decent, but I don't know if I'd give it another listen.

Fun stuff…influential and captures the essence of a certain time and place, maybe feels a little gimmicky/dated at times in 2025, but mostly light-hearted interpretations of great songs.

Fine enough swing album. I enjoyed it, but nothing exceptional. Fun for its runtime. Kept the tempo up throughout, and the performance was fun.

Pretty fun. Buona Sera is an absolute beauty.

S- 7/10 M- 9/10

That's some primo Prima 🎺

Fun and energetic.

This Louis Prima is grand, so much fun. Not typically my thing and won’t go back to it much I imagine but it’s getting a high 3 for being utterly delightful throughout

Sounds like rom com music. Delightful but not really for me.

Favorites: Just a Gigolo / I Ain't Got Nobody, Buona Sera, (I'll Be Glad When You're Dead) You Rascal You I believe this album is the most okay album I've heard so far. There's nothing bad about it, but you can very much tell it's a product of its time and hasn't aged very well. While I have no doubts this went absolutely crazy in the 50s, music has evolved and swing (for the most part) got left behind. Although it may sound dated, I still appreciate its role in what music would become, so thanks for everything Louis. 6/10

Pretty coool, didnt listen through the whole thing unfortunaylt, like the vibe

Iconic voice but a bit out of my time, I’ll never dissociate him from the Jungle Book (2.5/5)

don’t hate it. i feel like i should be doing the jitterbug on the faster songs and sipping a neat old fashioned at an evening jazz club for the slower songs. saxophone is the star of the show. favorite song: body and soul (mainly for the saxophone)

I have a feeling this guy would irritate me if I saw him perform, but as recordings it's a lot of fun.

A little bit of Louis goes a long way. He is fantastic under a scene in a movie or for a song or two in the background of your local Italian eatery. But I'm not super interested in a whole album of it.

Häftigt album ändå, lät väldigt bra och kul för att vara så gammalt. Förstår att det är ett populärt och viktigt album i musikhistoria. Men kanske inte min favorit hittills

It is ok, nice energy, but sometimes dull. 3 stars.

Makes me want to play Fallout 3

Skemmtilegur jazz. Er hún betri en aðrar svoleiðis plötur? Veit ekki, hljómar allt eins.

Pretty good, Gina would like

The songs sound like they could be in an old animated cartoon for kids. Also sounds like Radek’s grandpa’s car. I think the music really fits with the ”!” in the album title. Not the wildest but The Wildest! Indeed. Very retro 50s old movie dancing scene in a diner vibe.

his scatting is kinda weird but other than that it was fun

a good listen

Very good swing record. Not anything groundbreaking or anything. I guess they wanted to include some blues-y swing record that sounds like the missing link between the jazz and rock eras Key tracks: Medley: Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody Jump, Jive, an' Wail

(72/100)

Música simpática. Y bien tocada.

A lot of fun but not something I’d pick up again.

S’good

Average 50s jazz album, singing is pretty good though

its fine, interesting but at times annoying

Pretty fun. Best paired with dinner guests who you're trying to impress.
