WHAT A DELIGHT! :)

Easy 5. Right up my alley - Fun instrumentals, matched with fun vocal work. Good vibes and good times all round! 'Groove Is In The Heart' wins my fave.

Great album - definitely listening again!

What a surprise! Really dug this groovy, funky, silly 90s party album.

My favourite dance album of all time. So much more to explore past ‘Groove is in the Heart’ (which is still an absolute banger, bop, tune…). 10/10

I love this.

I have heard Groove is the Heart but had no idea who Deee-Lite really was. Great dance music. Love it!

The Beatles broke up in disgrace after hearing this album

So many listens, back in the day. I still know it by heart. It’s lost a tiny bit of its charm but it’s still a fiver.

Had no idea this album was as much fun as it is otherwise I would have had it listened to years ago

I had never listened to this album before and I LOVED IT!

You can't help but love those vocals and house piano chords.

Tons of groove on this album. Not my normal listen but this was thoroughly enjoyable.

Brilliant album.

That was so good, cool beats all the way through!

A forgotten gem from my childhood. I had this album on CD and would use it to fall asleep at night. The songs can be a bit repetitive in nature but they are such bangers that it just doesn’t matter. “Groove is in the heart” is the best and most 90s song in creation. Absolutely adore this album. 10/10

Normal pants are not an option

House. Me ha gustado bastante. Venga, un 5.

When I was 11, VH1 counted down the top 100 one-hit wonders, and listed "Groove is in the Heart" at #14. They mentioned Bootsy Collins’ participation, who I recognized from the Beginner's Bass book I had gotten that Christmas. I also really liked the snippet they played a lot. So, even though I pretty much only listened to pop-punk at the time, during my next trip to Strawberries Records, I picked up the full CD. My mind was instantly blown. As silly as it sounds, World Clique was my gateway into dance music. (I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that it also inspired me to dig more into the full CDs of other one-hit wonders, which served as my own personal music history education throughout my teens.) While I’ve always loved this album, the older I got, the more it rose in my personal Top 100. By the time I was in college, it was solidly in my Top 10 favorite albums ever, and it’s remained there to this day. It’s bubbly and fun to dance to, but it’s also layered and has all these unique textures that you can unravel if you listen closely. It’s also deeply aware of its lineage, and I think that helps solidify it as a classic, because it’s reverent without feeling academic. This is really what I want most out of music – on the surface, pure fun, and if you want more, you can dig into it, but you can always just enjoy it on that surface level, too. It’s camp and inclusive and cute and catchy and feels communal. I love it so much, it’s flawless through and through.

Playful and very fun. So riffy and funky, makes me wish I was older in the late 80s/ early 90s so I could enjoy the queer dances that were most likely happening to this album. Surprise 5 stars for me

So good. The whole album is great groovy dance music. 5 stars.

Someone took a bath, Mr. Bubble Middle name, must be trouble Bootsy, Qtip, Maceo, great album, fun af! Saw Deee-Lite early 90's WOW, holy psilocybin

Easy 5 I love this album so much and I believe in the power of love. And also groove IS in the heart

Classic for period. Tracks include several major artists, such as Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Bootsy Collins, and Q-tip.

I really enjoyed it :) at least 50% of this enjoyment was possibly due to how fun I think the album cover is but that's because it's Very Fun. I feel like it's been too long since I gave out a 5 so I'm giving it to this album even though arguably it's possibly not worth it. So yes 5/5 for the silly little guy on the album cover

Fun Fun Fun album. I knew a few songs from back in the day, but...now that I was able to listen to the whole album, I can say, if I ever feel like putting on my dancing shoes, I have an album to throw on and dance to.

Bangah

I thoroughly enjoyed this album. More than I thought I would. I knew Groove is in the Heart before but it’s a solid album all the way through

A pure delight. Funky house might have existed before Deee-Lite, but Deee-Lite picked it up and ran with it.

Relentlessly cheery, great stuff

This is incredibly fun and exciting

Wooow Jay il faut que t’écoute ça, c’est du goofy thunderdome electro pop

This is great! Groovy

I went in with the most skepticism possible, thinking it would just be mediocre electronic 90s music, a 3 at best, and...… It's fantastic. It has this funky, unique, unbridled sense of energy to it. Production is unbelievably clean without giving the sense of being overly-polished. Bass lines are groovy to the highest degree. Now for the negatives. First off, the cover. Not much to say besides it sucks, but I suppose it also somewhat encapsulates the energy of the record, so I can forgive it. Second, the pianos. I hate midi pianos with a burning passion. So lifeless and overly-bright and uncanny. If they had been more prominent in the record, it may have significantly detracted from the experience, but they are somewhat ignorable in the grand scheme of the album. Another thought: The original vinyl pressing did not contain the first or last tracks, and I think omitting them might have led to a better experience, especially the intro track, Dee-lite Theme. Overall, not flawless, but 4 stars just seems inadequate. It's full of character and life, and leaves you wondering what will be around the corner next.

My second favorite Deee-Lite album, close behind Dewdrops in the Garden. I give this one an absolute 5/5, mostly because it grew on me every time I listened to it, and I realized pretty much every song is a BANGER. "Power of Love" is definitely the best track on here, although I think it needs a glow-up in terms of production. The album overall is pretty quiet and compressed-sounding. But otherwise it's immensely enjoyable! I especially love the techno/electronic dance elements.

Bit sickly sweet but not as bad as LL Cool J. Fkn great example of my favourite bell sound in Smile On. WOAH alright came out of nowhere with the verging on 90s trance break, me likey. Ooft coming in real nice with Groove is in the Heart - one of the ultimate Rics tunes. Hard not to give it a five just because of that. Never fully appreciated Q Tip in it either, possibly a perfectly constructed song. Alright this went from what I thought was going to be all sickly sweet to deep, dark, dirty and weird ver quickly and I loved it. Build the Bridge is some real out there shit.

Every morning I check the genre of the album of the day to see if it’s a workout album or a “dishes and laundry” album. This is a fantastic workout album and a great way to start the day. Nothing but great beats, catchy hooks and positive energy. You could put it on at a party and listen to it front to back. Definitely putting this one in high rotation.

Do I want to hear a whole album by the "Groove Is in the Heart" people? I mean sure, that's a great song. And ... yep, a fun listen. Surprisingly good (and goofy) throughout.

Wow. An album I disliked to start and it grew on me . Upbeat and quirky. I loved it

House. Me ha gustado bastante. Venga, un 5.

Oh, don’t know about this… that album cover might induce a seizure… I should learn by now: DON’T JUDGE AN ALBUM BY ITS COVER. I have now beheld very cool album art encasing very, double plus un- cool albums. And here we have a cover that would cause me to generally look away encasing a pretty awesome lp. Many a day, I am just looking for a good beat, and this album delivers. Perhaps not as consistently as I might desire on the b side, but hey, it’s good to get the party going. I find all the claims about how badly this has aged and how dated it is interesting. Their use of the funky bass is quite nuanced, I believe it would make a funky mf through the decades nod. 4 Boolean: true

I never really gave funk a chance when I was a kid, and most full on Euro music was unavailable. But both have intrigued me for quite a while now and I am "into" both. So imagine this French (I believe) funk band that simply oozes fun. I love this "way of being" where a band that is both vocally and instrumentally good keeps everything fun and makes it all light and easy. Of course we all need those deep gothic grungy serious things too, but this is like the Yin to the Yang of EMO. And I am super glad for this discovery!

a deelight, but also a bit too consistent for my tastes

honestly my only complaint is that i wish one of their other albums was here too or instead bc i like those more, but still really good and very fun

Makes me wanna dance. I like that!

Very fun music. Not redeeming or life-changing, but it does make you feel good and want to dance.

What a strange record and group! Sonically it's the most early 90s things ever, and visually it's either that or the most 70s thing ever. I really liked the blend between electronica, jazz, and blues. Everything feels very light hearted and playful. Heavily sample based, which sounds both dated and timeless at the same time. The lead singer also has that iconic "female house vocal" voice that sits just right in all songs. 'Groove Is in the Heart' was the star of the show, but I enjoyed all of the songs to be honest. But this is also up my alley, so hard to be unbiased here. Maybe not a record I will come back to that much, but I am really thankful I stumbled on this - something I'd surely have missed otherwise. Realistically a 3, but weak 4 because it's 90s electronics.

I was expecting more culture club and less tribe called quest….lets just say I was pleasantly surprised. +1 point for the project

deee-lightful! I had never listened to the full album, but there are some real bangers in there.

wooooow isch das 90er. ersti paar tracks chraaank fun. samples sind jo krass geil. try me on isch huuere geil. sind alles samples?? so uf smile on zb?? wow die gepitchte glöggli! e.s.p. isch etz eeehner en schwachpunkt bis jetz. aber hetz chunt groove is in the heart. ich han gester müese a d e song denke. so insaaane guet. tönt vieeel lüüter als de rest vom album haha. chraaanke groove. und d piuuuu puuuo flötuls haha gooil.

For being a one-hit-wonder and what not, this was a surprisingly good album. Fun funky beats and a pleasant listen. I do feel that the individual songs go on for a tad longer than I like, but overall this is a fun album. Low 4.

A wonderfully eccentric crossover that bridges the gap between electronic dance and pure funk. By bringing in Parliament Funkadelic heavyweights like Bootsy Collins and Maceo Parker, the album infuses 90s club music with authentic, elastic 70s grooves. It is colorful, subversive, and heavily rhythm driven.

A lot of fun! Id love to hear this in a club!

Lovely dance music

Nog wel creatief, me likey

Simply just a groovy album, nothing more or less. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

I’m at a 3.5 that I’ll bump up to a 4. Well, it’s house music with a little bit of rap behind it. If you don’t like house music, you probably won’t like this. If you do like house music, like I do, you’ll probably enjoy this, at least a little bit. This album’s not pushing anything forward with the genre except for “Groove is in the Heart” for integrating Q-Tip’s rapping & Bootsy Collins’ instrumental work on top of all the samples. That track was a major hit for a reason, and it’s easily the best one here. The rest of these tracks all range from solid to pretty good, with my second favorite one here probably being “Deep Ending”. This album doesn’t really have one big issue that keeps it marked down, but instead, just a pile of little things. Miss Kier’s vocals are good when she’s going faster / belting a little bit, but she often doesn’t carry enough power in her voice to make her presence feel like anything other than vocal dressing. If you think of all the big dance hits of this era, their singers just have more presence, most obviously on something like “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”. Past that, a lot of the instrumentals here just need a little more bounce / pep to them; these are typical House soundscapes of the era, so if you like the instruments used, you’ll probably get something out of this. It’s just not as energetic as it could be, save for a few tracks. The biggest issue in the pile, at least for me, comes in the length of these tracks; many of them just overstay their welcome & go a little too long. I get it – house music is just kinda naturally long & lingering sometimes helps in an actual club, but that’s what extended singles are for. As a whole album, the 48 minutes here do drag on a bit. Hence, a 3.5 that I’ll bump up to a 4. It’s not a bad album at all, and I do think every track here has something enjoyable to it, but once those enjoyable moments pass, most of the tracks just linger around too long. I don’t see myself ever really getting close to a 5 here, but I don’t blame anyone who’ll go that high, especially if these beats hit well or if the pile of issues I had just didn’t affect the enjoyment that badly. I’m glad it’s on the list.

We can't not talk about "Groove Is in the Heart". It seems so emblematic of an era where the rules of sampling were still being figured out, where it was just starting to be cool to combine influences from as many genres as possible on the same track, where house music as we might call it today was just starting to take off. And yet it remains totally idiosyncratic - if you can think of the wave of sung/rapped psychedelic breakbeat songs with weird sound effects it inspired, I'd love to hear them. But, probably like a lot of you here, I'd never listened to the full album before, and was kind of surprised to hear that most of it is pretty straightforward house music, with its only real connection to "Groove Is in the Heart" being Lady Miss Keir's unmistakeable voice. You even get a nod to the rising acid movement on "What is Love"! It's tempting to say that by this point, most producers still hadn't figured out how to make 'dance music' as we'd call it today work in album form, but while this isn't my favorite dance album we've heard on this album it's certainly not a bad one to grab a drink and settle into the groove with. The sound does veer back and forth between more and less synth-heavy tracks, but I see that at this group that had one foot pretty firmly planted in club culture pushing the limits of the sound they established for themselves as far as they could go. In a way, it reminds me a lot of what Purple Disco Machine does these days, though that may be heavily influenced by me seeing him close a set once with an especially transcendent "Groove Is in the Heart" remix that eventually slowed down into a near ecstatic conclusion. I never really know how to evaluate these albums that have one ingrained-in-the-fabric-of-our-culture hit, but fuck it, I'm going to dance and have some fun to this one.

This is best approached as a continuous system rather than a set of songs. It behaves like a room with conditions that are established early and then maintained with quiet discipline. The sequencing is closer to a DJ set than a traditional album: it warms up, fills, peaks, disperses, and decompresses without ever breaking the underlying logic. The palette is immediately legible and very 1990: house piano, light organ, vocal fragments, and a bouncy, funk-derived bass that does most of the real work. The interesting thing is how little they feel the need to elaborate on that. There is no attempt to demonstrate range, no “depth track” to clear the floor, no structural detours designed to prove seriousness. The achievement is that they hold a consistent social temperature for the full run. Most of the material operates on loop logic. Phrases repeat, mutate slightly, and accumulate detail rather than progressing in a linear, narrative sense. You stop tracking sections and instead inhabit a continuous present. The arrangement is often compressed in the sense that there are few clear signposts: elements enter and leave, but nothing announces itself as a formal shift. This is functional. It removes the listener’s ability to step outside the groove and encourages participation over analysis. “Groove Is in the Heart” sits oddly within this. It is an exceptional single, but it behaves differently from everything around it. Where the rest of the album sustains a situation, this track creates an event. It is denser, more foregrounded, more obviously structured. It briefly imposes hierarchy on a record that otherwise avoids it. In lesser hands that would fracture the flow; here it reads more like a spotlight moment within an ongoing set. The decision not to follow it by escalation is key. They immediately return to play, which restores the album’s underlying logic. Elsewhere, the record moves through variations on the same core idea: groove as environment. “Deep Ending” leans into early deep-house language, softening edges and extending time without becoming introspective in a later, more codified sense. “Build the Bridge” is particularly instructive. Its extended opening groove and pared-back arrangement feel more like a cold opener than a closing statement, which is precisely why it works at the end. The album does not resolve; it hands the room back to you. There is a persistent analogue quality to the feel, despite the reliance on samplers and early digital instruments. This comes less from equipment than from behaviour. The basslines carry human phrasing, the timing is not rigidly quantised, and the layering allows air between elements. The result is a system that feels lived-in rather than constructed, even when the construction is obvious. It has dated, but in a useful way. The sound world is specific and unmistakable, but the functional design still holds. This is not a record that rewards close textual analysis or repeated dissection. It rewards tolerance of repetition, attention to flow, and a willingness to let it operate at the level it was designed for. Put simply: it works if you let it work. It is not a great album in the traditional sense of statement or depth. It is a very good example of something more modest and, in its way, more difficult: forty-five minutes of continuous, usable groove that neither collapses nor demands attention.

This is a super fun record. I remember when these guys blew up, it felt very much like the 60s upgraded for the 90s in terms of the old look being mapped into the new sound.

A lot of dance albums don’t really translate to sitting and listening, but I thought this did. Groove Is In The Heart is the best song, no surprise, but the rest is really fun and solid dance music.

Deee-lite, the funky group of hipsters from NYC with eclectic backgrounds coming together to make you get off the couch and dance. Japan's Towa Tei, USSR's DJ Dmitry, and Miss Lady Kier from...YOUNGSTOWN OHIO. MY HOMETOWN. Anyway lol This group is known for their smash hit single "Groove is in the heart". Funky guitar and bass and a stellar feature from one humble rapper Q-Tip (!!!), are only some of the reasons why this track is incredible. The beats are incredibly dancey and Kier's vocals absolutely soar over the ingenius display of sampling and beatcraft this side of the 90's. Pulling from super obscure source material, this track is mind-blowing when you break it down. The rest of the album is pretty dang great too. Lots of fun tracks that explore all different sides of dance and pop, from UK Street Soul to Acid House, this whole album is a wonderful time with very little in the way of outright bad tracks. One of my favorite albums being "Cosmic Thing" by The B-52's makes perfect sense as to why I fuck with this album so heavy, it has many of the same vibes that I enjoy from that masterpiece. So glad I gave this one a chance, can't wait to let it grow on me more as time goes on.

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? I only know Groove Is in the Heart How do I feel about this artist? I don't know much about them Favorite song(s)? Groove Is in the Heart, E.S.P. Overall Thoughts: Enjoyable listen. The groove is in the heart is definitely the highlight of the album, I can see why it is their big hit. However, the rest of the album isn’t too far below in quality. Made me want to dance the whole time.

Fun dance music to turn your brain off to.

I know I owned this CD back in the beforetimes, but I have no memory of any song other than Groove is in the Heart. This was so much fun! Maybe it doesn't deserve to be on the same list as Dark Side of the Moon or whatever, but if you can set that aside, it's a good time.

A milestone album that heralded the birth of what came to be known as "90s Optimism."

I love 90s dance music. I’ve talked about this before. Deee-lite is definitely an early adopter of what made 90s dance so catchy and boppy. Adding some funk and soul along with the beats and ethereal vocals encapsulates the fun party vibe of it all. While this might not be the best example of the genre, it is a great transition from the pop music of the 80s. I will note, I get why people don’t enjoy it. It’s vapid, surface level beats for the purpose of raising the tempo and getting people moving. The lyrics aren’t challenging and don’t carry a message beyond “love and fun is the way of life”. But the garish outfits and bops always put a smile on my face, and sometimes you just want to have some fun and find that groove in your heart.

Deeeelightful

Strong opening!

In a very good mood for this album. Not bad. I like it. Might not sound like a compliment but I’d love to listen to this album again in a nightclub’s restroom cubicle.

Its Spirit Week at the school I teach at and today is Decades Day, so it feels very appropriate to be playing this album throughout the day with all of the students rocking 80s and 90s fashion. Makes me feel old. Only came into this album knowing Groove is in the Heart but lord was it entertaining and so much fun to listen to. Apparently I'll need to take a deep-dive into 90s House/Dance music.

IDK about that attempt at fake French on "What Is Love?" but I mostly enjoyed this album. Pretty weird but I like that.

Early 90s dance pop is a guilty pleasure of mine and I’m so glad to finally have some on the list! Before I became a moody teen all my mixtapes were of Deee-lite, Real Mcoy, M people, Technotronica and La Bouche. I still have a playlist of my faves which includes Groove is in the heart which goes on fairly high rotation. While I’d dearly love to add Groove is in the Heart to our challenge playlist, this is only a 4 from me. I enjoyed it - I desperately needed a pick me up today.

The groove isn't just in the heart, it's all through the album!

Fun listen

Deelightful

Good groove and funky fun!

It’s cute but I’m not sure it’s the greatest of all time

Club af

The beats hit hard. Fun instrumentals, it is what you would expect from the album's theme. It's an interesting approach to mysterious but fun music. It may lack some variety from time to time, that is because the songs were kiiiiinda similar.

Groove is in the Heart is, of course, an excellent song on a generally quite fun and bouncy album.

The cover looks like B-52's rejects, but as it turns out, it's just a solid dance album.

Very 90s and fun

So cute

Was much more into this album than I thought I would be

i've def heard better house but this still fun af. also casual q-tip surprise feature wdf. caught me super off guard, dope af

I have only known Groove Is in the House before so I was curious about the whole album and it didn't disappoint me. I like the vibe of late 80s/early 90s house and psychedelia so this album is a great mix of both genres, it's pretty unique. It must have sounded really fresh and different back then and it still doesn't sound too dated.

It's like it took the spirit of Prince's Batman soundtrack and turned it into a dance album.

This is like if a trio of aliens came to Earth and tried to blend in as a dance music band, and I mean this in a good way. From the beats to the album cover, this album just feels extraterrestrial. This is extremely prevalent in songs like What Is Love? and Build the Bridge. Uncoincidentally, those are also some of my favorite songs. Favorite Tracks: What Is Love? | Build the Bridge | Groove Is in the Heart

I legit think Groove Is In The Heart is one of the greatest pop songs ever. When I got to it I played it 3 times in a row, smiling like a loon and singing along terribly. Before I started playing the album I was sure it would be a 3 star review based on one brilliant song and a bunch of filler. However, turns out I'm just a sucker for that early 90s dance sound with soulful vocals, and found myself really enjoying the vibe and clicking my fingers to the beat while I was driving like an absolute dad.

Very fun album with great vocals. A great mix of disco, pop and funk.

This is about as early 90s as possible. And a bag of chips

And to think all these years they were just a 1 hit wonder.

wow... they're right. groove really IS in the heart britney-spears-crying-and-saying-yeah.gif

That just fun stuff. Good listen, would def listen again.

The Good: Fucking ‘90s party jams! The Bad: Fucking ‘90s party jams! The Ugly: Fucking ‘90s party jams! Yes, I stuttered there… because that is what one would do back in the day ‘90s One thing is for sure, you hit play and instantly are transported to the ‘90s, with the good and the bad. Deee-Lite was a one hit wonder, where I lived. But I can understand how the band was able to amass a nice cult following… Is this my thing? No. Could I listen to this once a year? Yes. Should this album be part of a party mix? Hell yes! Groove’s in the heart babay! 3 1/2 upgraded to 4*

A delightfully fun album. Groove is in the Heart outpunches the rest of the album. Placing it near the end was a great formatting decision.

This was easy to listen to while I worked. It had a good beat. I recognized Groove Is In the Heart.

Ciekawe. Takie 4. Nawet nie wiem jak zaklasyfikować ten gatunek. Ale takie RnB, Funk i coś jeszcze.

i had fun

Such a sucker for groove like this. Hard not to love

Overall rating by me: 9/10 Songs added to the playlist: ,,Good Beat", ,,Power of Love", ,,Try Me On... I'm Very You", ,,Groove Is in the Heart" Notes: Absolutely love the whimsy and quirky vibe of this album. Had it not been for the just-instrumental songs I would've given it a higher note, since I like my songs with at least some words in them.

Loved it! All over

First time this genre, but perfect.

groovy

This album was just so queer and fun, and so am I

Been getting a lot of old electronic music and I love it!

This is definitely an album that helped house music reach a broader and more accessible audience. It’s one of those albums where you really had to be there at the time to fully appreciate the impact it made. Without that context, it might just come across as run of the mill pop and dance music from the early 90s.

Nice trip down memory lane. Everyone knows Groove is in the heart but there is some nice piano house and Acid House too. Unrated band seen as one hit wonders whne they actually have some decent tunes.

So many catchy tunes.

4 estrelas

WAAAY Better than i thought, based on the 1 song i knew going in.

From NY

Me ha molado mucho, me ha trasladado a una pista de baile de los 80, con pelo afro y pantalones de campana jaja Me he guardado un apr de canciones suyas

pure groove. great listen. 8.5/10

Very interesting sampling. This album clearly had an impact on a lot of the electronic music I was listening to in the late 90s/early 00s.

I love this album.

Really fun, simple early 90's house. Filled with catchy hooks. Standout is the hit "Groove Is in The Heart" but other solid tracks too ("Good Beat") and no skips until the last two songs.

This album feels like my childhood. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

I was skeptical about this one at first but ended up really enjoying it.

Always fun - I forgot about many of the songs, but of course knew Grooves in the Heart.

Some songs that are almost Groove Is In The Heart and almost as good, Groove Is in the Heart, and some duds

Yo that was a groovy little blast from the past

J’adore ! Je connaissais déjà « Groove is in the heart » !

Totalement ma came! Ambiance un peu R&B bien 90s etc. Je connaissais Groove is in the Heart donc c'est sympa de découvrir l'album entier. 4/5

So original and groovy. Quite Deee-Lite-ful

This was a lot more fun than I expected, and I'm being generous here because I just enjoyed it.

Great funky stuff.

I like house music and I had a great time listening to this album. I never heard any of the songs or the band but I did not regret listening to them. I always felt that 90s house music is unparalleled compared to modern house music. I am not sure how to explain but it just feels that it has more soul and love put into it.

What in the scooby doo is that album cover. This felt very native tongues which is fitting with the Q-tip feature which came out of nowhere (I was already familiar with the song but had no idea he was on there), something like de la soul or jungle brothers comes to mind a bit with the beats as they had that kind of funky, fun sound that early native tongues albums had. Obviously though this was missing the rap part of that as it focused on dance beats but it did still have great vocals which really kept it fresh which I really appreciate. This also felt ahead of its time with the more electronic dance aspects in some parts of songs but I thought this was mostly quite goofy fun which I don’t mean in a way that takes away from the artistry as it is clearly well made but it was clearly made to be fun which it was. Favourites: Dee-Lite theme, Try me on, Smile on and Groove is in the heart. Overall, 7/10.

More than just their one hit, peppy vibes

Groove is in the Heart has to be the most upbeat, happy song in the history of music with Bootsy Collins and Q Tip thrown in for good measure. World Clique might be deserving of a 4 for that song alone. Sure, not every track on this one is a winner (loooking at you, Who Was That?), but the good ones do some heavy lifting. Quintessential 90s dance music.

Solid album. I’ve known this album for a long time. Groove is in the heart is a bop. And the rest are dope as well.

Super fun!

It’s got a fun funky sound

This was so fun, very glad I listened to it. It’s not my jam and I didn’t love all the vocals, but the beats were undeniable.

Groove is in the Heart, de klari Star us dem Albom esch au rächt guet, aber halt ned e so guet wie desi zwöi. De räscht esch eigentlech alles sehr easy. Mängisch e chli besser melodisch ond de weder e chli langwiilig, aber nie sehr schlächt.

A dance album where you want to dance to all the songs. A rare treat. Not quite a 5 but a high 4

Fun dancey tracks I liked what is love and good beat

That was an unexpectedly nice and groovy album! Quite enjoyed that! 4/5

I am well acquainted with Groove Is In the Heart. Let’s be honest: who isn’t? It’s one of my favorite songs. I had never heard any other songs by Dee-Lite. This album sounds like hippie space music, and I think that’s a great thing. Lady Miss Kier’s voice is so crisp and strong. I just love it. The positivity of the lyrical content is really refreshing without being cheesy. I couldn’t sit down while listening to this album. It’s such a funky groove that I needed to move with it. I honestly felt like I should’ve been voguing, waacking, and death dropping the entire 49 minutes. Groove is the standout track due to its dynamic nature, but the rest of the album is a vibe I’m into and could see revisiting often.

Good beat, positive themes, and Kirby’s sweet voice mean rounding up this 3.5 album.

Maybe it's nostalgia talking, but this is good dance music.

5 seconds in my head is already bopping. Good Beat really reminds me of Groove is in the heart. Ok, well now I know why it reminds me of Groove is in the heart.

I really like this sound and I know it’s connected to late nights at The Bank in the early 90s. I don’t think it’s a negative to rate an album based on nostalgia. Evoking strong emotions is a core objective of music ! The groove is in my heart!

I remember buying this album years ago, and being a little underwhelmed by the songs outside of "Groove" (and there is probably an alternate dimension where Q-Tip & Bootsie contribute on more albums that is an absolute classic). That said, revisiting it now, it holds up better than a lot of albums from this period, possibly because they were so out of sync with a lot of pop culture of the time. Maybe a 3, but letting it by with a low, low 4.

I remember liking the opening Deee-Lite Theme as much as the monster smash Groove is in the Heart - and they both more than stood the test of time. I was surprised by the more electronic feel of What is Love? and Build the Bridge - which I'm pretty sure I didn't appreciate back when my mom had the CD. Maybe nostalgia is fueling this take, but this was a largely fun listen - if a bit dated in places. But dated in a sweet way, like how sincere hippies were about all you need is love.

I had fun.

Deee-Lite is one of those bands where I hear the name and just start singing “GROOVE IS IN THE HEEEAAART!” That song was so infectious as a kid, and still is an all time earworm to this day. I remember having this album on cassette back in the day, so this was a cool and fun revisit.

Super ambiance, supers sons, j'enlève une étoile pour certaines chansons un peu répétitives mais je réécouterai avec plaisir.

Deee-Lite’s 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 captures the vibrant spirit of early 90s club culture with funky grooves, playful house beats, and psychedelic flair. It feels far more stylish and musically rich than the formulaic Eurodance that followed, proving that 𝘎𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘐𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 was just the tip of the iceberg.

groovy

Enjoyed this considerably. Soundtrack of a movement and doing what music should do at its core; express. In this case, to make one either happy, and/or frankly, just dance!

Deee-Lite is all about the groove, the rhythm, the beat that gets stuck in your head and makes you move. Love the complex beats, the driving bass riffs and fun sound effects. The opening to Groove Is in the Heart says it all: We're going to dance, and have some fun!

Deeelightful

Listened with headphones and the stereo sound was really a delight.

V Good beat, 4 of 10 great songs

A nice surprise

Da scaricare per il viaggio

Fun, Lively, Makes me feel like I am in a Montage

It's pretty disco groovy. I liked it.

7/10… 90er dance / house

A big slab of techno disco dance funk Some bits hit great Some has dated Obviously one absolute stormer of a stand out track

it's a vibeee

absolutely sensational album i’m now in a fantastic mood

Catching up on some of my missed albums - holy FUCK do I love 90s dance music. Perfect work background tunes, even if a bit generic. Also includes my favorite 90s trope of having a Q-Tip jump scare

Good energy and interesting sound.

Really fun

muito bom

It’s always cool hearing the album that one of those instantly recognizable bops comes from. “Groove Is In the Heart” is one of these. Fun album for sure.

A three musically. A four for the club scene it brought on people’s attention. There’s still only one truly great song on it through.

10/10 because of groove is in the heart. Rest of the record is better than i remember

Topp stemning hele veien. Så lekent og kreativt. Groove is in the heart 💓

Funky Grooves Milestone Album

groove is in the heart is the best record on here by far… that being said great record!

That album was Deee-Liteful. straight club bangers top to bottom. GROOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVEEEEEEEEEEE ISSSSS INNNN THE HEARRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT

Can't quite work-out whether they have had too many drugs or not enough. A fun album though, that doesn't pretend to be anything else.

Groovy funky

The beginning of this got me, but it kinda fell off from there. I still liked it, but it got repetitive

Who was that who was that lead singer has a crazy voice a really like the album

very funky. scratched my brain just right.

A very unique blend of minimalism from all three members - vocals, samples, live instruments - that comes together for something greater than the sum of its parts. Strongly evokes early 90s NYC. Clear influence on the likes of the DJ Shadows and El-P’s of the world. The poppy and traditional aspects of this record are its weakest points. Listened to: walking in BBG. Favorite tracks: Good Beat, What is Love?, Groove is in the Heart

Incredible fun all throughout! Fun stero effects with headphones too. I've definitely heard Groove is in the Heart before and I was happy to hear it again! Put it on for a good time

4 maybe 5

Complete (Good workout music)

Q-TIP JUMPSCARE this has maybe got to be one of the most popular songs he was ever on. I feel like listening to the whole album kinda nullified the fact that I guess they are a one-hit wonder, but so many of the other songs are great and dare I say ahead of their time. The ones with a drum machine don’t work too well as the kicks just don’t hit as hard as with the sampled breaks. Singing really adds some flavour to make the looping instrumentals not too boring. The little sprinkles of guitar also make it much better. Favourite songs: deee-lite theme, good beat, what is love?, world clique, groove is in the heart, who was that?, deep ending. Overall around 7/10

I listened to this while cooking dinner and had the best time bopping around the kitchen. How fun is this album?? It's mixed so well too and has a great flow. Plus ypu know I'm always delighted by a Q-Tip appearance. They said it - We're going to dance and have some fun. Dig!

fun n funky

Enjoyable fluff

Very 90s dance music. Was kind of fun and had lots of strange sounds and samples scattered through each song. Groove Is In The Heart is an obvious standout, but the Deee-Lite Theme track was a lot of fun too and had a great beat. Not something I'd want to listen to all the time but it was a nice change of pace

Wild and wacky, this is pop I feel no one has ever heard. It starts kind of boring, and I didn't love the dated feel of the singing and beats for most of this, but then I got to the back third, and man, what a jam. Groove in the Heart is good, but Who Was That and Deep Ending are really awesome, and were worth the listen by themselves. Overall, weird stuff. Doesn't really sound like anything 80s or 90s, but still sounds dated.

Positive retro dance from the early nineties? Bitchin'!

Well, I found it surprisingly listenable and fun. "What Is Love?" is a masterpiece! "Good Beat" really is a good beat! We're going to dance and have some fun! Dig!

I've been really into this one. Just good clean electro pop fun with some interesting arrangements and solid production quality. While this has a distinctly 90s tone, the dance floor grooves are timeless and I could easily see a lot of these songs integrated into modern DJ sets. The energy is great, vocals are effective (and nicely layered), and the grooves are undeniable. Smile One > What Is Love? is a highlight here for me. Love the fuzzed out, burbling bass with the bright blips on the latter. Reminds me a lot of some songs on an album released last year by Bolis Pupil and Charlotte Adigery called Topical Dancer. Groove is in the Heart is a jam. Not a lot more to dig into here. This was good clean fun and I loved it. High 4 / 5.

I’ve just discovered a new guilty pleasure—World Clique is a fun, infectious dance album that’s impossible to resist. The beats are catchy, the energy is high, and I thoroughly enjoyed every track. This is definitely an album I’d revisit. Going in, the only song I knew was Groove Is in the Heart, a track I’ve always loved. The rest of the album carries that same vibrant, feel-good energy, making for a great listening experience from start to finish. Favorite song: Groove Is in the Heart Least favorite: Honestly, every track is worth a listen. Album artwork: A cool, psychedelic cover—very Scooby-Doo vibes.

1990s dance music, 1 hit wonder category, this is going to be a struggle. Well no I really enjoyed this, it’s fun and funky, and sounds as dayglo as they look. I’m no dancer but listening to this got me grooving during the day, can definitely see me listening again, so a surprised 4 Star.

Can anyone listen to Groove is in the Heart nowadays and NOT be transported to the twink's apartment recreation in Search Party?

Extremely solid house album

Funky joy

Wow this was so incredibly 90's and I loved every minute of it.

So groovy, I enjoyed this more than expected. Build the Bridge and What is Love? Were two of my favorites. Parts of Build the Bridge reminded me of Streets of Rage 2 level music.

daft punk but good

Great samples, flourishes of classic disco house, funk house, and deep house with colorful abandon. Further accentuated by the 90's-wave of boisterous sampling efforts by Towa Tei. Some of this is too poppy for me but then again it produced "Groove is in the Heart" and I can't be mad at that. Bravo you goofballs, bravo.

Fun and happy. One extra star for Groove is in the Heart, an all-time bop.

Poppy, bubbly and fun. Would make a great house party soundtrack.

Was totally the feeling I needed today. Discounting that it was still a great album!

Of course ‘Groove Is in the Heart’ is an absolute all-time banger and by far the outstanding track on here. I don’t get all the hate for this album though. They have a fun vibe and aesthetic and it is good upbeat house music that puts a wee spring in the step

Good old fashioned dance album

Fun album

silly fun

y'all are a bunch of haters, this album is fun 😭😭

"World Clique" is the debut by American dance band Deee-Lite. House and pyschedelia are the Wiki-listed genres. Fair enough. The album was self-produced by bandmembers Super DJ Dimitry, Jungle DJ Towa Towa and The Lady Miss Kier Kirby and included guest appearances by Bootsy Collins (bass), Q-Tip (rap vocals), Fred Wesley (trombone) and Maceo Parker (sax). The album received mixed reviews with some finding their dance music laden with hooks and being unpredictable while others found it formulaic. It was successful commercially due to its singles reaching #14 in the UK and #20 on the Billboard 200. The group introduce themselves on the opener "Deee-Lite Theme." A sax and synth sample. Nice drumbeat. An extended synth intro begins "Good Beat." Alright, a deep bass and hypnotic dance beat. A sample of MARRs' "Pump Up the Volume" carries the melody. Echoing vocals by Miss Kirby. An overlayed xylophone to the melody. A piano starts their second single "Power of Love." A deep groove. Wah-wah guitar. Electronic drum beat. Miss Kirby's very souful vocals. Miss Kirby keeps repeating in whispering vocals "Why Don't You Listen to What the DJ's spinning" in their third and final single "E.S.P." An echoing synth and changing electronic drum beat. Jungles noises and vocal samples taking this into the pyschedelic dance area. And, well, they master that pyschedelic dance theme in their wonderful "Groove is in the Heart." A drum sample of Vernon Bunch's "Get Up" and riff sample of Herbie Hancock's "Bring Down the Birds." The irresistible groove and vocals by Miss Kirby. Lots going on. Inserts of a sax and trombone. Q-Tip with a rap break. One of the best songs of the 90's. This album was a lot of fun. Strong, playful, sexy and soulful vocals by Miss Kirby. Deep and funky dance beats and bass. They mix up the instruments carrying melody with guitars, synths, piano, sax, various samples and even a xylophone. They keep it interesting and do venture into pyschedelic dance territory with their weird synth noises, samples and beat changes. I found this album original with really not a dull moment

just fun and funky to a tee. 90's dance club music has never sounded better. It gets a little repetitive for me in some spots (around What is Love, to be precise), but to keep up this energy across a whole album is difficult. It just put me a good mood altogether.

Super duper fun album!!! Listened to this the morning before I drove up to lost paradise and it put me in the perfect groovy mood!

groove is in the heart

Not my kind of music, but music is fun and groovy.

Pretty pleasant listen so far! Fun and infectious. Really liked her energy in particular. Not an everyday listen but definitely an enjoyable time. 4

This is definitely an album that helped house music reach a broader and more accessible audience. It’s one of those albums where you really had to be there at the time to fully appreciate the impact it made. Without that context, it might just come across as run of the mill pop and dance music from the early 90s.

Delightfully hip and funky, a pure 80s sound. Can't help but feel filled with a party spirit after listening to this one!

Mit Kopfhörern anhören ist "World Clique" ein Hochgenuss. Stereo wird hier voll ausgereizt. Es sind viele Instrumentalteile zu hören und mit Stimmen versehen. Es gibt auch Gesang. Sehr abwechslungsreich.

85% Best: Power of Love; Try Me On...I'm Very You; Smile On; Groove Is in the Heart; Who Was That? Must-Hear? Sure

Wow, feel like this album takes some big swings. When it does hit the ball....it sure does fly out of the park but there are some complete misses there too. There were even times listening to one song had both 5* and 1* moments. "Groove Is In Your Heart" is a song I have loved for years and it still is absolutely amazing to me. I think with that alone I have to give it at least a 3, but there is enough in there that genuinely was good that I think this merits a 4*

This one has guilty pleasure written all over it. I can't in good conscience give such a ridiculous album 5 stars but it's definitely earned 4 by being so fun. 'Groove is in the Heart' is obviously familiar and by far the best track but the rest is better than expected. The clashing color scheme and charmingly obnoxious fashion sense give some hint of what you're about to hear. Some absurdity and avant garde filled the void of the music scene as the 80s turned into the 90s. Deee-Lite couldn't have emerged at any other time but it's a fun reminder of that brief era. If you're not having fun with this one, you may be taking things too seriously.

Really great album! May have vaguely heard this name before but didn't know what to expect, some really great electronic/dance stuff here, at times felt some early hip hop bounce in here too. Keeping quite a few from this one, really glad to have heard it. Favorite tracks: Good Beat, Try Me On, What Is Love, ESP, Who Was That, Build That Bridge. Album art: Funky shot of three funky people with a starry backdrop. Very hip, very vibrant. Fitting. 4/5

Love this album. It brings back so many memory. And it still holds up

Loved this!

Groove is in the heart es famosa. Está chulo, es muy rollo tienda de ropa

I mean they had one song I guess?

So exuberant and fun

Actually gas

Fun disco album. Groove is in the Heart might be my favorite track. Definitely good energy that makes you want to dance.

Fun 90s dance party.

Clinton, retro, upbeat

I mean, it’s goofy and all sorts of cheesy, but it’s FUN. It’s funky throughout and absurdly danceable. It reminds me of recent albums from The Go! Team and Jessie Ware. Groove Is In The Heart is the highlight and one of those songs that a lot of people will be like “oh yeah I know this one” when they hear it. 7 years from now this question will probably be on a music trivia game I’m playing and I’ll forget it’s Deee-Lite unless it’s multiple choice.

I like this. These beats are firmly planted in the late 1980s/early 1990s. But the sampling and the aesthetic go back much further, more reminiscent of the 1960s. It definitely sounds like it was built for a party in the club. Lots of fun from start to finish.

The track Who Was That was sampled in Fergie's Clumsy 2006. This was a good listen and definitely a different sound for the 90s

I miss club dancing

I think a lot of people question why this is on the list, but I question why the list isn’t more like this instead of being full of the entire discographies of any Britpop band with a single domestic violence charge between them.

I kinda sorta really fw this - I guess I’ve always had an affinity for fun goofy stuff like this. It’s kinda hard to gauge exactly what genre this album falls under - at times it sounds like the strange love child between electronic, hip-hop, and RNB, (especially vocally). Spacey - out of this world vibe, especially on the fuzzy sequenced synths comprising the song 'What is Love?'. Many tracks here are built off a large variety of samples, like the landmark track ‘Groove is in the Heart’ that features from Funkadelic affiliates Bootsy and Maceo, and of course Q-tip. It also has my favourite Lady Miss Kier vocal performance here alongside ‘Good Beat’. Such a fun son. I mean overall it’s just such a chill and fun experience - providing a means to space out and breath.

This often sounds like a precursor to the dance music of the 2000s and beyond. The staccato rhythmic piano chords are foundational to modern house music. The drum machines and heavy kick drums so come to mind. A major difference however is how rough around the edges and deconstructed this record feels. It’s quirky and industrial feeling. It also wears it’s major influences on its sleeve: soul, funk, and disco. What surprises me is the hip hop influence. A lot of the beats at the core of the less dancy songs sound very hip hop to me especially the intro song. Super interesting listen. 4.0

I loved all the layers of music, funk, disco and early hip hop.

This album continues to be an absolute delight

groove is in the heart is just too good of a song

Super fun

I don’t really get why the average rating for this is so low. I think this is fun, poppy, dance music. I can see myself returning to this when I want to cheer myself up. 4/5

Sick ass funk house. Drags in the middle somewhat but ends pretty well. Definitely see myself enjoying this more with time.

bro the horns in the first track are acc fire as fuck. and the guitar on who was that...insaneeee

Every song was enjoyable, funky and fresh. It was remarkable how quickly the sound of the 90's became defined. However, each song was internally a bit stagnant, so I can't give it the highest marks.

Listened to this album many times in the past. Even the worst tracks on this album are listenable, and for those who only know "Groove is in the Heart", there are some other great ones on here like "What is Love?" and "Try me on...I'm very you". Even the intro theme is kind of a banger. Maybe not the most challenging or deep music lyrically, but it's a great mood-lifter and just might have you dancing around your house.

Funky, optimistic, fun. This is just terrific music to elevate your mood.

Was gonna try being all clever n say that this lot wish they were Jockstrap, but nah they're better than Jockstrap and their weird voodoo music. Also kind of admire how the album just gives up on itself after Groove is in the Heart. Why not?

Really enjoyed. Will play when I need a pick me up. Boys will love it.

Excellent example of the genre. Feels like their art was really audiovisual. Their videos were the best.

Cover Impressions: I feel like I've at least heard the artist name before. Kind of looks like. B-52s situation going on. A couple tracks in, I realized this isn't so much b-52s, but I did figure out where I had heard them--Jock Jams. I had a lot of cooking to do this evening so this was great fun to have on and dance around the kitchen for a little workout. I'm sure if anyone saw me it would be on the Internet by now, but some good old 90s fun, being locked into the rec center at Funscape. Favorite track "Groove is in the Heart" 4/5

Fun and refreshing. Great to have a chance hear the depth to this group, beyond the one hit wonder.

Super fun. Would listen again.

I really enjoyed this

Hit Groove Is in the Heart. Dance. Chulo.

Surprisingly enjoyable

Wild sound, 2nd best Deee-Lite album probably

First listen enjoyed it more than I thought I would

Hele aardige bangers hoor. Wat een verademing na al die meuk zeg. Alsnog wel piecie raar maar wel grappig om te luisteren

Great album

Funky, fun, energetic, positive and electric. What a nice record that just simply makes me feel good. Needed this kind of album right now.

House music is not generally my thing but I liked this.

Really enjoyed this album. The dance/electronic/pop is one of my favorite genres and Deee-lite don't disappoint. Outside of the hits, I like most of the tracks. You might worry that more than one DJ will lead to too many cooks in the kitchen. This is probably why they broke up after only 2.5 albums...but this debut slaps.

Throwback groovy sound.

Very unique. Many good hooks. A few earworms. Overall enjoyable album.

This was not an album I expected myself to enjoy, but really did. Although I listened while cooking, so was a little distracted, "What Is Love?" stood out to me and overall I enjoyed listening to the album and would listen again.

Loved it. I knew the hits from back in the day, but it was great to give the whole album a listen.

Surprisingly fun, breezy listen

I thought it was "Groovers in the hut" when I was young. One of my top 10 songs of all time. Rest of the album doesn't quite live up, but it was fun

Very funk stuff. Reminds me of the meters combined with hip hop

Really good. Love that funky shit

Cool funk disco something.

“Groove in the Heart” is a classic track, a melange of hip hop and house with great samples and a sassy vocalist. Some critic said it defined the summer of 1990 and I agree. You’d hear it everywhere in those days and it still sounds fresh nearly 35 years later. “Good Beat” and “What is Love” and “the Power of Love” are strong supporting tracks that make this something rare – a dance music album that’s listenable from start to finish. They were, to a large extent, one-hit wonder, but what a hit!

It's fun. Beyonce is currently being lauded as a genius for photocopying this album. The samply stuff is better than the housey stuff.

Hit Groove Is in the Heart. Dance. Chulo.

There are a lot of catchy house-pop tracks from the 1990s, but not many of them still sound as good as "Groove is in the Heart", and even fewer could be scaled up to the album format successfully. This one is 48 mins of good vibes with almost no filler, and a guest spot for Q-Tip from A Tribe Called Quest. House music ranks fairly low on my personal list of electronic genres, but I respect Towa Tei who went on to make a load of good solo albums that are generally solid. I'll be very happy to check this record out again in another 10 years, and I'm pretty sure it will still sound great. 4*

This is fun! Too much fun for a straight though listen for me, but it pumped me right up in pieces!

They had an album?! "Groove is in the Heart" is a totally awesome tune, but I would never have thought to listen to more of their stuff than that, let alone thought that their album is in the top 1001 to listen to. Is Gina G in the top 1001? Betty Boo? (Betty Boo should be, to be fair.) Anyway, as the first track started and I thought, "Hey this is really good!" I wondered if it might be a whole album of "Groove is in the Heart"s. And then my other half walked in and said "This is a great album!" and sang the Deee-lite Theme that had just finished. It was looking good for Deee-Lite. It is, of course, not all "Groove is in the Heart"s. It sounds a bit dated and their are some skippable tracks, but it's probably my favourite thing I've listened to as part of this 1001 albums thing so far! Also I recognised a sample in the first track as Tom Jones's "She's a Lady" which made me feel rather smug. So, a bonus point for that!

Actually pretty solid, liked it quite a bit

Very well produced, catchy hooks, clever composition. Fun and engaging.

Some really cool groovy tunes, sone awesome baselines with breezy 60s kitsh style lyrics. Altough a lot of stinkers as well, on the whole an inconsitant album. But cos it's got the almighty Groove is in the Heart it gets a 4.

It's funky its groovy what's not to like
