Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Enjoyed it!
Perhaps a massive hit hurt them so they are remembered as a one hit wonder rather than the fun, adventurous group on the rest of the album
It's ok, would probably land closer to a 2.5. Quite the same throughout the album, so if you're in the mood for this specific music it's perfect. Groove is in the heart is a banger tho
groove in the heart
70s funk updated for the 90s and still sort of fun to listen to in the 20s. The only thing that’s honestly keeping me from rounding up from 3.5* is that several tracks reminded me of sitting in an Old Navy while waiting for my wife to try on clothes.
Fairly interesting
This album has it's ups and downs but for the most part it was a decent to good listen. You got their classic "Groove Is In The Heart" but aside from a few songs there really ain't much to say. It's groovy, unique, and fun. Nothing to blow my mind but it was still nice. Top 3: Power Of Love, Smile On, and Groove Is In The Heart Worst: Build The Bridge (this the type of shit you'd hear in a mid retro game) 3.00-3.25/5
Not normally my go-to but I'm enjoying having this going on in the air around me. Soul dance a term for the genre? Good groove.
It’s a high 3.5 but I’m not rounding up because, reasons.
I still really like this album, it makes me happy, for some unknown reason. But there is something about this early 90s house pop that I always found a bit appealing. C+C Music Factory would be another contemporary example. But there are a number of tracks I still really dig a good bit, "Groove" of course, "Who Was That?", and "Good Beat". I even liked the opener which I never heard until today since it was omitted from the vinyl Lp. Not so much great song but great intro to the album. There are a few slogs that keep this from a four, mainly at the end of side one. But overall this is Deee-Lite-ful enough (7.55) ★★★½
Big sucker for this style of dandy, peaced-out early 90s house music and Groove Is In The Heart is of course Deee-Lovely but in terms of other quality tracks to match that it’s a bit Deee-Lacking. Good Beat, World Clique and Deep Ending are Deee-Decent whereas bonus cut Build The Bridge is Deee-Dogshit. Probably still the best album on this list that Q-Tip appears on.
What a Deeeliteful album! A real Groove in the Heart!
Groove is in the heart HARD CARRIES the rest of this album, which while fun, is notably boring. Like that song is a perfect 5, for a 2/5 album, so i'll give it like a 3/5
6/10 I guess it’s fun, but I can’t tell why it’s in this book
Groove is the Heart was good. The rest meh.
"Groove is in the Heart" is a huge song. Such a good blend of funk and electronic. Some of the other songs have this vibe (e.g. Deee-Lite Theme). But many parts skew more electronica/house and less funk, the kind of stuff I'd expect to hear in the background in fancy clothing stores.
This is a vibe. I'd have to be in the mood for it, but man it takes me back to the early 90's like Technotronic, C&C Music Factory, and so many others. As a complete album it doesn't hit quite as well as some of those contemporaries, but if it's on, I'm happy to let it ride.
It was like perfektly balanced and danceable
So, I kind of had slightly higher expectations. In high school I didn’t dig the or their style, but as I’ve matured I recognize Groove is in the Heart as a genuinely good song. I was hoping for more on that level. It’s not bad, but not quite what was hoping for. Still glad I listened to it.
slow
Meh? I think Groove Is In The Heart is where their quirkiness works, whereas elsewhere it doesn’t quite line up
I *really* wanted to like this. The album starts off with a few truly brilliant tracks which really showcase the start of electro-funk. And then… it sort of just losss momentum and every song is so similar that they merge into one. Until THAT song, which is, undeniably a banger. Sad to score this middle of the road… but it’s so middle of the road, I don’t really have a choice.
This is more slight than I was expecting. It's funky and with a positive energy, but it's not quite as energetic as I thought it might be. It's still quite a good listen for most of the runtime. Groove Is in the Heart is a certified banger. Ps: Good album cover!
groove is in the hearttttaaaa. thought this would be worse minus that track honeslty.
Fun!
Groove IS in the heart
Background Electronica with good vibes and grooves. You just don't want to listen too closely because of its repetitiveness.
I think this album is probably pretty mediocre. But I have a strong memory attached to Groove Is in the Heart. And I also love how raw and real her voice sounds, which you don't get on dance music since the advent of autotune. It carries with it power, the imperfections. I wish music would get back to that. But anyway, I will say this album is just fun. Happy lyrics. Good dance vibes. Techno funk to get your ass moving.
Ummmmmmm… I didn’t hate it, and now I’ve heard it, so …. I imagine if I were deeply into certain genres of music I would better understand the relevance of this album.
Realno, ovo je one hit album, ali taj hit toliko ubija da samo zbog toga ide ocjena više: 3/5, 5/10. P.s. Try me on isto nije loša
Fun dance album with groove at the heart of it
Well I had fun with this. I don't know that I would describe it as an album you must listen to but GROOVE IS THE HEAAAAARRRTTTT
fun like the lady with the fingers on the album art
The hits are so good, there are some other standout moments but I was actually hoping to like the whole album a little more.
It’s a generous three stars… Grove is in the yard was one of my jams that I used to play when I DJ. Nothing else off the album seem to make the hairs of my skin jump.
This has got to be one of the worst album covers on this entire list. Luckily, that doesn’t matter. This is dance pop music that mostly hits its mark. I think everyone needs to understand just how far electronic dance music and pop have gone to fuse together in the past 20 years (particularly the late 2000’s/early 2010’s), and how this wasn’t so normal in 1990. The crisp quality of most of the vocals in particular really impressed me, everything is very distinct and easy to hear. “Good Beat” is as advertised, a good beat. Maybe one of the more memorable songs on this album. “What Is Love” is NOT the Haddaway song, but perhaps the most ‘experimental’ of the bunch. “Groove Is In The Heart” stands out not for being a disco-inspired one hit wonder, but for being significantly louder than the rest of the songs on this album - an indicator that it’s clearly a single. Hard to get mad at any of these songs or at the album as a whole. Did its part to push for 4 on the floor music to make its way into pop, but I’d stop short of saying this was anything monumental. 3/5 down the middle
This album gives me SNES menu music screen vibes. One could say this album marked the gateway to the 1990s decade. It was fun, but the same beats, and bloops got old after awhile. Favorite Track: "Deee-Lite Theme".
I'm not sure what makes this essential listening. It's not bad in any way, but I'm not sure that 48 minutes of it yields any insights that 4 minutes of groove is in the hard would not give.
Not as bad as I thought. This oozes early ‘90s dance music.
Not my taste but decent. My heart didn’t find the groove of some of the deeper tracks
I have soft spot for 90’s dance so I was excited to see this pop up but I really wish every song was about a minute shorter, could have bumped it to a 5.
I think Deee-Lite Theme, What Is Love, and Grove Is In the Heart are great, but the other tracks are just background noise. Very basic beats, nothing that catches the ear. It's completely fine, but doesn't do anything all that interesting. Q-tip is on this album, for some reason, which was unexpected.
Couldn’t listen to it except on YouTube and ads drove me mad but what I did hear I liked.
A little goes a long way. Not as obnoxious as I thought it would be.
Funky but a little repetitive at times. Groove is in the heart is a classic
Grove is in the heart is cool. The rest is ok it’s all got a good groove.
Nice club album.
Most people just know "Groove is in the Heart," as this band mostly seems like a one-hit wonder, albeit an amazing one hit. But this whole album is a classic early 90s house/funk album. If you wanted to bottle all the sounds of the early 90s into one jar, this would be it. The album is quite good, beyond Groove is in the Heart. There are some cheesy moments that sound pretty dated, naturally--you'd kind of expect that on a group like this. But also a lot of house tracks you'd expect to hear on Chris Sheppard's Pirate Radio mixes. 3/5
Groove is in the heart
Had some moments but it didn't do a lot for me
*Slide whistles down* *Slide whistles up*
Only ever heard Groove is in the Heart which is still a banger of a tune. As groovy as you would expect but a bit dated sounding now.
The sound you get when funk and disco meet early 90’s house. Groovy but dated.
Ysäri housea. Ihan menevä ja hauska, mutta aika basic sillein. Parhaat: Groove Is In the Heart, Good Beat,
My childhood. Loved registering to this after many years.
The 1990s were upon us and it was looking to become a groovy, neon tinged world full of possibility and nothing encapsulated that more than the musically adventurous Deee-Lite. Their visions of a World Clique is on full display here, mixing together house, hip-hop, soul and disco to make one indelible, spacey package. Groove may be in the heart, but it is also best expressed by movement, which this album has in spades. Favorites: Deee-Lite Theme, Good Beat, Power of Love, Smile On, E.S.P., Groove is in the Heart, Who Was That?
Oh I was so excited to listen to this album. I love "Groove Is In The Heart" and I was hoping the rest of the album had that same vibe. Sadly, that is not the case.
Vaguely interesting, but overall not that much to it.
Co to w ogóle ma być? Elektronika na najgorszym poziomie. Powtarzalna, zbyt konwencjonalna, aby zaskakiwać, trochę do bujania trochę do pogardy. 5/10, chociaż to i tak za dużo.
"Groove Is in the Heart" is super catchy and the video is a great throw back. The rest of the album is ok dance music but never reaches the pop greatness of the single.
A couple of interesting songs, a few not really worthy. 6/10
De primeras pensaba que iba a ser un álbum un poco raro pero resulta que es una joya del Groove de los 90. De repente aparece el archiconocido "Groove is on the heart". No obstante, no es un disco para cualquiera, es posible que lo disfrute porque soy un millennial cascado
Groovy and fun, and a little repetitive
3.5
Fun game: imagine dance lyrics but in a turnstile song. There’s no difference. All this shit sounds like Sesame Street (complimentary) if they had an episode teaching kids the answer to the question “what if someone wanted a good beat?” Not nearly enough tambo. Closer to a 2.5 I will likely only revisit one or two songs
90s techno was a very particular genre and this album does it very well. Just about every track on this sounds like it belongs in a DDR game or on the Queer as Folk soundtrack.
Fun overall. Kind of uneven with high-high(s), many-mediums, and dated-lows. GIITH is a classic and will outlive us all (due to the song hunting us for sport (the song’s catchiness is only surpassed by its thirst for blood)).
Hey this was fun, though it got a little samey after a while. And a bit long. Still, you know what?
Deee-Lite oscillate between house-y vocal dance and funky hip-hop beats, with the former sounding a tad dated and somewhat straight-laced compared to the latter. If the question is "is there more to Deee-Lite than Groove Is In The Heart?" then the answer is probably yes, although nothing else quite hits that same very high standard. At it's best, this is a decent, quirky piece of 90s pop which spans severel danceable genres - the quality control is a little off, but it's very much of my era and still appeals to me for the most part.
Fun and funky but overstayed its welcome by the end. Really not sure why this rates a spot on the list, despite the banger that is "Groove Is in the Heart."
Obviously groove is in the heart is a banger. overall a fun listen but not sure I would go back to this
3.5 -.5 because Groove. The rest was sort monotonous tbh.
This album is really not as bad as the reviews would have you think. Sure it is a bit dated, but far from a one hit wonder! Some other good songs on here are A Good Beat, What Is Love, and E.S.P. There are a few mid ones, but the only one I really disliked was The Power of Love.
It’s house music. Pretty soulless, but you could get lost in it in the right situation. Good Beat is arguably a better song than Groove is in the Heart. None of the other tracks were memorable to me.
Kul skiva. Bättre än jag trodde.
Meh..lite lattjo. Men inte min kopp te. Inte dåligt egentligen. Så tre
One of those albums where the difference in production value between the Song You Know and the rest of the album was stark. Nice listen overall.
"Groove is in the Heart" was really lightning in a bottle. There is some weird (positive) stuff in here besides that too but none of it really has the same energy. Interestingly some of it reminded me of like Front 242? Sample heavy industrial type music?
I know this one from way back, it's not T1001 worthy but has its moments. It's certainly unique, exceptionally mixed/produced but the sound & has one giant hit, but it doesn't stand up all that well this many years later. "Good Beat", "Power Of Love", "Who Was That" & of course "Groove Is In The Heart" all have good stuff. I don't believe her voice is strong enough to carry an album though. With 250M listens "Groove..." is a 90's classic with some 80's vibes and a dancefloor favorite. Bootsy Collins & Q-Tip add some bonus funkiness and the production on that track is just money. Overall, kinda fun, but not great, not worthy of T1001 but I'm glad I gave it another try all these years later. 3 stars for the one hit (that's still a radio favorite), the killer mixing and the impact it had at the time.
3 Sterne
This was fun. Essential? Not so much aside from Groove is in the Heart, which is starting to feel eternal 35 years later . That said though, this album is unique and feels like a good cusp record, bridging the pop/dance acts of the 80's and 90's respectively and in a positive way. It is also pretty impressive to have Bootsy Collins, Maceo Parker, and Q-Tip on the roster !
Not half bad. Half good, actually
Good background music listen quietly
3* 66%
- A little too funky pop - Classic late 80s/early 90s pop - „What is love“ is a pretty awesome techno track - „Groove is in the Heart“ is super famous song! - Second half of the record gets better and more funky and less poppy - Great ending („Build the Bridge“)
Wanted more fun from this album, but it’s just okay.
Corny in the good way.
A bit funky. Not quite for me, though.
2.5 stars. Fun, but not that unique or exciting.
Groove is in the Heart is SUCH a major outlier, like they knew that was THE song on the album. It’s so different from most everything on the album it’s jarring. The rest is groovy but safe.
Great, fun dance vibes with unique synths, samples and singing. Surprisingly consistent with great songs all the way through keeping me interested through the lot. Just nothing else quite as catch as groove js in the heart.
I remember when the video for Groove is in the Heart hit MTV back in the day. 10 year old me HATED it. Now I love that song. It's a fucking banger. Rest of the album is meh. Tolerable but not great.
For its age, I think that was actually pretty decent. Not quite a four. They'll have to settle for a three
Listened before?: Only to "Groove Is in the Heart" Easy to listen to but not entirely memorable, for me.
Nice album. Very typical early 90s sound. Very upbeat and fun. Good to listen to Groove Is In The Heart more closely.
6/10 I love funk but the only certified rump shaker on here is groove is in the heart. Songs added to playlist: - Groove is in the heart - Who was that?
A quality dance album. The beginning is the stuff, and Groove Is in the Heart is such a great track. However, the album takes a downslide from there, and honestly, it takes it from a 4 to a high 3 on relisten.
Not my cup of tea but I will vibe with it
This was an ok album, nothing jumped out at me besides their big hit ‘Groove is in the Heart’, which seemed to have much more production quality put into it. 3/5 won’t seek it out again but I wouldn’t turn it off
A fun little bop. The electronic sounds used really date it in a charming way. Not something I probably will return to but a worthwhile experience. The samples used are as fun to explore as the tracks: https://www.whosampled.com/album/Deee-Lite/World-Clique/
Härligt album 2 bra låtar. Funky o super 90tal.
Groove is in the Heart is one of those songs that always gets stuck in my head so I groaned when I saw this, but the album as a whole was a good time.
Ikkje så inspirerande
I don't really have much to say about this album, it didn't sound super interesting, nor did it sound bad.
5.5/10 Nothing too inspiring, but somewhat annoyingly I didn't dislike it as much as I wanted to. Highlights: Good Beat Deep Ending Groove is in the Heart
decent house/dance cuts. definitely fire for samples and groove is in the heart is one of the best dance singles of all time Would I listen again: Only to Groove in the Heart Deserves to be on this list: Yes, because of sampling history, not the quality of the album 2.6
I can't imagine anyone cool dancing to this music in the club. But the 90s were weird, and I've never been cool, so what do I know. The music doesn't really hold up to me, but it's not offensive.
maybe 1001 albums was a little too ambitious for the writers because i don' think this is one i needed to hear before i die. it's okay, but necessary, no
Groove is in the Heart will always be a classic. I’m not too sure about the rest of the album though. 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
I was into it at first. Funky and fun at parts. But then it felt pretty repetitive.
Groove is in the Heart is perfect, power of love is good, rest is unremarkable 3.2
Favorite Track: Groove Is in the Heart
I'll admit that, after seeing the name of this band and the cover, I thought this was going to be awful. Like really not great. But for what it is, it's fine. It's a very, VERY 90's sound that in some ways has aged well (since a lot of 90's stuff is now back in fashion, especially in music). For a dance album, it certainly is danceable. I do feel that, at times, the beats are a little too complicated to be truly danceable, but largely that isn't an issue (I also have very little idea what I'm talking about, really). But there is just something about this album that works, and I find it a little unexplainable. Not every track hits, but when they do it works. Maybe it's just the sheer amount of confidence that radiates off this thing, the sense that the people involved were going to be completely unbothered by what critics or the public said about it, they were just gonna do their thing. That demands some respect. We have to talk about "Groove Is in the Heart." Talk about 90's. And the slide whistle? Really? But hey - it works and it's one hell of a track. What a great 90's bop. I'm really surprised (pleasantly so) to be giving this three stars. A good time had by all. Standout Tracks: Deee-Lite Theme, Good Beat, Smile On, Groove Is in the Heart
It's okay. I'm a bit surprised it's on the list; as far as I'm concerned Deee-Lite were one-hit wonders. The whole album is similar to the one-hit I guess, but not quite as much fun.
I was excited to listen to the album, but it was kind of meh. Amazing how one song can sound so much different than the other ones in terms of production and all around quality and then it not be surprising that that is their most well known hit.
Fun album with lots of filler.
Good album, very 90s.
It feels weird that this was made in 1990. I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. It was fine. Some funky and psychedelic moments throughout are the good parts.
World Clique is definitely one of the more bizarre albums on this list. There were quite a lot of points in the album where the songs had many different things that they wanted to try with mixed results. The results were generally pretty good and had their moments but sometimes, the weirdness did get a little too much. There were definitely quite a decent bit of solid songs here which all sounded pretty unique from each other but some did go on for a little too long causing the beats to get a little bit repetitive. This is one of those albums where you have to know what you are getting into to really enjoy it but if you do, you will find quite a bit of enjoyment here. Best Song: Good Beat Worst Song: Build the Bridge
Thirty five years old and "Groove Is In The Heart" is still a killer track! This was a fun album and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
I was groving with this, but oof, What Is Love is PAINFUL. Who Was That is weird - and was that one of the pre-programmed electric keyboard beats? Odd but largely benign album.
It was alright
Pretty good. No song really stood out to me but overall it was good.
Not bad. Not my usual type of music. Maybe needs another listen
For over half of the record it seems to be like the longest waiting line for their Hit Single. But afterwards the rest of the album is very rewarding („Who was that?“/„Deep Ending“)
I would say I mildly enjoyed this one. A lot of the beats were catchy, funky, and felt like something I would enjoy in a club on 90s night or whatever. I did feel like it was dragging until Groove Is In The Heart came on, which was the obvious standout. Also liked the opening song and Power of Love. Low 3.
Kinda fun, high energy, poppy. No real standouts, but no real low notes. Repetitive, but not overly so. Mid-low 3. A nice change of pace when comparing to Sabu.
That was an alright psych pop kind of album that was pretty much right down the middle for the most part. Right up until Build the Bridge at the end which was fucking whacky as hell. Was always thinking 3, this didn't move it up, but was definitely quite the addition. I think I knew Groove is in the Heart.
Started out well, then got pretty repetitive until What Is Love. That song gets a little sludgy and bangs. Groove in the Heart is the obvious highlight on this album, even if it reminds me of that cringey dance scene in How I Met Your Mother. This had its highs and lows, but was a moderately average album to me. For that it gets a 3!
Some of it slaps and it's supposed to be fun. I love the 90's, but this is a lot. It isn't quite there.
Pretty good.
Ah, I remember the time when, as a fourteen-year-old child, I learned about "Groove is in the Heart", and being an idiot, I looked up the music video. Mortified, I watched as three grown-ass adults danced in front of a cheap green screen. Definitely impacted my life as a music connoisseur.
Cool
Groove Is In The Heart is an all time banger and makes this a 3 out of 5. Otherwise, it's 90s club music so not really my thing.
pretty cool album with a bunch of songs that i already knew of, but never realised who the artist was. If you’re craving some old school electronic music that still has a “fresh” feel to it, this album is perfect for you. rating: 72/100 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ & ½
*Bruce Campbell voice* Groovy
I wanted this to be better than it was, but it got tedious after a while. 2.5 stars
This was fine for a short while, but then I had to go listen to something else.
Why was the tone constantly off. I was looking forward to this.
Like most, I'm only familiar with "Groove Is in the Heart" when it comes to this album and group. Lovely hip-hop/funk/dance jam that will often appear on my music playlists. Knowing only that single coming into today, I never quite had a grip on Deee-Lite's identity as a group, though. It's clear after listening that Deee-Lite is unique group in the dance & house world. You hear aspects of house across this album, but it's a bit more out there than what you would normally hear from this era of house/club music. Wikipedia also describes this album as "psychedelia", which seems apt. I'm not sure how one dances to most of this music in this album, though. Not as fast and upbeat as other house tracks from the early 90's. Slight aside, I was impressed by most of the personnel involved here. I knew Q-Tip had a feature on "Groove is in the Heart", but Bootsy Collins apparently contributed a decent amount here too! As expected, nothing matches "Groove Is in the Heart" here, but there were a few tracks that were still deeelite-ful (boo!) and fun.
Outside of Groove is in the Heart it's a very pretty much just fine album.
Very good
I thought this was going to be peak shitty Europop based on the name and album cover. I do have a fondness for Daft Punk (one of my first favourite groups) so the house beats appeal to me. I'll give it up the album is pretty groovy and it can be quite infectious Unfortunately, a lot of stuff on top of the beat feels a bit hokey and drags the songs down. There's too much going on, I think this would've worked better if it were a little bit more stripped back or downtempo. Some of the added layers like the ascending and descending bells (if that's what they're supposed to be?) on Smile On sound juvenile (I can't think of another descriptor that doesn't sound so pretentious) There are some good uses to these though, like the oldschool synth sound like Kraftwerk or early Depeche Mode on tracks like What Is Love? and ESP, or the funky guitars on Who Was That? The vocals aren't poorly done, but they're a bit schlocky and daft. I suppose to a lot of people these components are part of the appeal, but not to me, unfortunately Highlights: What Is Love?, ESP
Funny these guys are not rock. More pop/dance. I do know groove is in the heart, but definitely interested in the rest of their music. This is some good stuff. I dig this.
Good energy, good sound, that cover is great. Worth a listen, worth being on the list. Don't need an endless amount like this but it's a good example.
Fine, Fun, Funky. A little flat sounding for me. Only knew the one hit. I guess it's a good representation of a genre and a time.
So it was OK. But I like my dance music a bit more modern. Three stars is the best I can do.
quirky and fun. two parts dance music to one part psychedelia.
Not the worst
Hoped for more, besides Groove is in the Heart really nothing special going on
when i was in high school, i would always try to hit up the half price books stores in my area and spend hours looking through the $1 CDs they had on clearance. i'd find anywhere from about 3 to 15 CDs from artists i'd heard of but never really gotten into, various 80s, 90s, and 00s one-hit wonders, and all sorts of random goodies that the rest of the world had decided were passe. they certainly weren't all hits, but you'd be surprised how much great stuff is out there if you have couple bucks and an open mind. as a result of this pastime, i started priding myself on being someone who would listen to not just the huge single by a one-hit wonder band, but also the rest of the album it was on, and maybe even some other choice tracks from their discography. i found a ton of my all-time favorite artists this way, and here are a few greats (in no particular order) that i think everyone should check out: goldfinger, tally hall, meg & dia, ludo, protest the hero, stroke 9, moxy fruvous, crash test dummies, eve 6, fountains of wayne, nena, alien ant farm, die toten hosen, and the presidents of the united states of america. a lot of them are only known for one or two big tracks, but check out the rest of the album those hits are from if you like what you hear. that's why you're on this website, right? anyway, World Clique was not one of these hidden gems, and Groove is in the Heart is really all you need to hear from Deee-Lite. 3 stars.
I thought what is love was gonna be something else. Anyway groove all time banger, and the rest of it is very danceable while still being songs with good lyrics and shit that later dance acts struggle with.
Ég man eftir myndbandinu við Groove is in the Heart. Mér fannst það ofboðslega skemmtilegt en fannst lagið sjálft ofboðslega leiðinlegt. Svo er ég núna orðinn eldri og þá virðist vera að ég kunni bara að meta þetta. Ég efast samt um að ég muni setja þetta aftur í spilun en hver veit?
Umm I thought these guys were a one hit wonder? I think I’m not wrong, but this was better than I expected. Some solid dance tracks, sort of had some Happy Mondays Step On vibes mixed with Funkadelic/P-Funk, a little quirky with goofy confidence. Groove Is In The Heart holds up surprisingly well, that Q-Tip cameo hits and sort of connects the dots of Deee-Lite and A Tribe Called Quest which is maybe not a link I ever really made in my head. Fun album overall.
Seems like I was meant to spend the majority of my weekend listening to dance music. Everything I said two days ago, and in any other review of a dance album still works here. Although, after hearing the first two songs on this, I had hoped that maybe I found something cool. I enjoyed the vibe they were giving off, and thought this was a dance record that had a more hip-hop centered sound to it. But once I got to track three, I realized it sounded a lot like track two. And track four sounded a lot like track three. And so on and so forth. There is a lot of repetition here, and it wears itself out very fast. I like that the main vocalist featured here is a woman, as opposed to the usual. But that doesn’t mean I actually enjoy her vocals. Like most things on this, they outstay their welcome in my mind pretty quickly. I initially appreciated the quirkiness of them, but it’s not something I can tolerate for nearly 50 minutes. I guess you could consider this band a one-hit wonder. As Groove Is in the Heart is pretty much the only thing they’re known for. It’s easily their most popular song. And I’m willing to bet that’s more because of the Q-Tip feature than not. Honestly the last thing I was expecting to hear on this. And of course it’s good, because it’s Q-Tip. But I’m not sure how they managed to get him for this record. The song is good, but not amazing. And his relatively brief verse being the highlight really strengthens that opinion for me. Sadly this is another dance album that I just couldn’t get fully into. Rating: 5/10
Happy and bouncy House music. Has the eternally epic Groove is in the Heart featuring Bootsie and Q-Tip and was a personal favorite. The whole album contains an effervescent mix of dance, disco, R&B, and hip hop. A pleasant listen.
Honestly not a terrible album. I kind of liked the vibe of it.
The single is one of the top 20 songs of all time. The rest was so so
Groovy disco with a little bit of Funk on the way to R'n'B
Groove Is in the Heart is definitely a banger. How do you make a slide whistle sound cool? I don't know, but they did it. Having Bootsy Collins play bass for you sure doesn't hurt either. The rest of the album doesn't really compare to it to be honest. I didn't not enjoy it, but I think I would enjoy it more as a live piece. It doesn't feel much like an album you should be sitting down to while listening. Definitely recommend a headset for this one as well, as there is a lot of play in the sound. Overall I think Groove brings the album up to 3 stars. Without it, it would be 2.
Perhaps one of the more unusual albums on this list. It was disco, techno, electronica. World Clique was a great album to power walk to. The beat was consistently good and wasn't repetitive or boring. Lyrics were probably the weakest aspect of World Clique; most lyrics were on the basic side. Vocals didn't wow me either. And that's fine to an extent because the music is what carried the album.
This album is very turn-of-the-decade electronic dance, and while I feel like it hasn't exactly aged the best, I still enjoyed it. I think with early electronic dance type music, it was very easy for a lot of it to sound repetitive not only within a song but from song to song. However, this album does a pretty good job of staying unique from song to song and not droning on and "lulling" the listener.
It was upbeat and fun. Definitely had major 90s dance vibes
the groove IS in the heart
Звучит как что-то позже, чем 1990. Но в целом не мое
Deeelightful
3 - Dunno, pretty forgettable after the banger
avevo sempre una parte del corpo che si muoveva a ritmo. funky da morire ma alla lunga anche un pelo noiosetto, in ogni caso un ascolto piacevolissimo
Honestly reminds me of music that would be for kids except in the year 1990. Music was fine, just a very prominent early 90s sound. 5/10.
I'm not sure what the purpose of this album was unless these were songs and styles that set the standard for everyone else? Every song felt like everything I've heard from the 90's. Sort of stuff that was on commercials on TV or kids shows as they danced. If this was the pioneer of that then cool, but something tells me it isn't. Groove is in the Heart is a classic though.
Pretty forgettable 90s house album with one mammoth hit on it. I can imagine Dimery getting to about 700 hundred albums and exhausting all the music he’s ever listened to. He turns to his wife and says “who did that groove is in the heart song?”.
Gets a bit samey after a while. Don’t think I’ll ever seek this out again, however I can appreciate that it was a piece of music of its time.
3/5
Was enjoying and got activated like a sleeper agent when I heard Groove is in the Heart. Could’ve sworn it’s in a FIFA game but couldn’t find it
Rating: 6/10 Pretty fun dance album, not much else to say.
Fun album with an extra star for the hit Groove is in the House
Firstly, Apple Music has this categorized as rock music. I'm not entirely sure *what* it is -- Funk? Disco? -- but it is *not* rock. With that out of the way...it was quite nice. Not anything I'd seek out, but very upbeat, groovy, and bouncy.
Electro funk rap. I quite like it. aging
Had to listen via YouTube as not available on Apple Music in the UK. Hard work with all the adverts.
Mostly ok, but a bit long. I hadn't heard anything other than Groove is in the Heart. I didn't mind it, but it's also not really my thing. 2.5/5
Disco com contexto no nível do hit, som gostoso para uma balada.
Meh. Not my style.
At the time I found the big hit pretty annoying and did not investigate this act, but have to admit there are some excellent tracks on this album, which has some famous collaborators. Good Beat is a great song for example.
I remember watching Dee Lite on the Arsenio Hall Show..... Music is such a magical force. Tied up with memories.... Rushing back with right motivation.
this is fun! very silly and bathhouse-y. 3 or 4 stars. I'm getting a lot of those this week.
World Clique is the debut album by Deee-Lite, originally released in 1990. "Groove Is In The Heart" was the big hit off of this one, and the only track I recognized. Unfortunately, none of the other tracks on here sound like that one. The other songs are more straightforward electronic/dance music that would come to be common throughout the 90s. I also hear a bit of triphop in these songs. They're not bad, nor do I think they are filler. The album cover is cool too.
2,5
groovifying
It's a lot of fun but 90s dance music is the sort of thing I just want to hear a song or two from at a time, not a full 45 minutes albums worth. Was getting a bit sick of it by the end, but overall it was a good collection.
Just alright, "Groove Is in the Heart" is a banger, but that's about it.
Pretty funky. I guess it deserves to be on the list.
Kind of fun.
pretty enjoyable but not really my vibe. barely not a 4
I’d heard Groove Is In The Heart before, and I like that one. Overall I like it but it’s just not totally my thing.
This was pretty interesting for a few songs and got stale pretty fast.
It's nice hearing an iconic track like Groove Is in the Heart in the context of an album. On the first listen it seemed to blend in niceley but on the second listen it really stood out as a lot of the other tracks are missing the flair that Groove Is in the Heart has. Still, an enjoyable, light and fluffly listen. Faves: Deee-Lite Theme, Groove Is in the Heart, Who Was That? is interesting and little creepy, and Build The Bridge.
Definitely the album the brought house to mainstream. Groove is a great song the rest is pretty good but not nearly as good as the one hit.
I like it more than I thought I would. It had that early 1990s vibe to it
groovy
surprisingly not that bad. Never heard of them - but the beat is good, nice effects and mixing, especially of r1990. Won't listen gain, but really was pretty creative.
Pre-listening thoughts: I have quite literally only heard Groove is in the Heart by this band, just like everyone else. Curious why this whole album is on this list cause it feels like that song is all anyone knows. Post/during listening thoughts: this is about what I expected - that sort of post-disco electronic/house music that I would kill for clubs to play nowadays instead of crappy trap music. Not a ton of depth lyrically but musically it’s very fun. This is the sort of genre that has inspired modern artists like Jessie Ware - I can totally hear similarities in production and instrumentation with the piano (learning this technique is called keyboard stabs!) and drumbeats. Power of Love reminds me of Free Yourself. I am a sucker for horns so Smile On won me over a little! Who Was That? Is almost too stupid for me to enjoy 😭. Like wym who was eating peanut butter??? That’s the lyric you ended up on? Some of the tracks are a little too long for my taste and I don’t think I’d revisit this as a full body of work but if some songs came on shuffle I wouldn’t skip them 6.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no, but it’s cool to hear this step in music’s evolution Fav tracks: Good Beat, Try Me On… I’m Very You, Smile On, Groove Is In the Heart Least fav tracks: What Is Love?, ESP, Build the Bridge
I do enjoy the poppiness of Groove Is In The Heart, but I'm not sure there's enough to sustain a whole album, right? Let's see. I mean, it did maintain a baseline of pretty listenable grooves. Nothing quite as stand out all of it very 90s hippy, but it has some conviction to it.
Similar to other in the same era
dansvæn fönskotin snemm næntís músík. mér fannst þetta hressilegt og frekar skemmtilegt. því ekki 3,5.
I wanted to make fun of this when I started, but darned if it isn't quite infectious!
Started off tepid and a little unpolished but got into a nice groove in the middle. Some interesting sci fi sounds but mostly typical 90s dance pop
Well I didn't expect to be greeted by an album from a one hit wonder that I had completely forgotten about today. It certainly makes me wonder what I (and most of the world) missed that makes it worthy of this list. So dance music really isn't my thing, but I found myself liking this quite a bit. It's fun, quirky and experimental in places. There's a fairly wide array of sounds, but some songs were a bit too repetitive and overstayed their welcome. It took me a few listens to pin down what I really like about this album, and that is its optimism. It just lifts your mood and puts a smile on your face.
Some bright spots, but suffers from sameness.
Contiene un omega banger, pero el resto del álbum queda corto
Pretty cool vibes, very of its era. Favourite tracks: Deee-Lite Theme, Good Beat, Power of Love, Groove Is In The Heart.
Listened on the train while speed-reading a science fiction book I wasn't enjoying. Considering that strange set of circumstances it was not bad.
Groove is in the Heart is such a banger, sadly the rest of the album does not come close.
It was alright.
Pleasant grooves to help you get through the day
A fun album that doesn't take itself too seriously. In the words of the great Tyler 'The' Creator, "God I love this sample"
avg
I thought I hadn’t heard of Deee-Lite (why so many E’s?) but I definitely know Groove Is In The Heart. This album as a whole is fun pop music in the same vein, though not quite as strong as its most well known track. I didn’t exactly find it remarkable, but it was undoubtedly fun for the most part. I suggest you try a drinking game and sip every time you hear “Deee-Lite” while listening.
Super cool.
This is not really what I would normally listen to and subsequently I'm not a huge fan. That said, I can appreciate that this is good stuff - it does manage to put you in a good mood.
Great vibes, fun. Favourite track: Deee-Lite Theme.
I liked the one song that is extremely popular off this album. I did not like the one about eating chips in her house. Overall kinda groovy and funky but if only 2 songs stand out and one is because i don't like it, I cant rate it very highly.
3/5. A fun and accessible dance album, despite some progressive instrumentation and vocals. I do enjoy that the samples are coming from the source and just the main vocals but edited. There are silly "boops and bops" that keep me entertained with sporadic changes in the repetitiveness that disco and pop music can have. It's not enough though as this album could be shorter and more enjoyable, as there does seem to be some filler on here. Best Song: Good Beat, Power Of Love, Groove Is In The Heart
Holy shit, Deee-Lite!! Never thought I would see this on here. Lets check it out. But first I need to take a shit. This was fun. Not too crazy about it though.
Not as bad as I'd feared.
Better than I expected but definitely some 90s vibes
"I just wanna hear a good beat." I respect that, and that Dee-Lite provides. And groove is absolutely in the heart. Hey again Q-Tip!! An album for dancing and hanging out; probably not for close listening. Highlights: Good Beat, Try Me On... I'm Very You, What Is Love?, Groove Is in the Heart (honestly, a perfect song),
Another one hit wonder, with not much substance outside of that track. Fairly underwhelming
Nothing revolutionary, but fun music to vibe to!
Hresst og ágætis stuð. Groove er banger en rest smá svona la la.
Hressir krakkar, of mörg lög. Groove is in the heart mesti smellurinn.
A bit funky and peppy. Pretty chill background listen. 3.5
Groove is in the heart and a bunch of songs just like it
It was quite good. It was better than I expected it was going to be.
Strange volume mixing. Groove Is In The Heart was so much louder than the rest.
Good dance album. Strong 3
Kiva
It doesn't cure cancer but the beat is good and it's a groove which I think was the point of the album.
Allegedly, Steve Miller’s The Joker beat Groove is in the Heart to the no.1 spot by 8 record sales. Oh well…
generic electronica album fat 2.5/5
Fun album. Just the one banger, but if you enjoy 90’s dance music, is is a good background album.
Deeeeep groooooves 6/10 Groove is in the heart is hilariously loud... rightfully so
I don’t know much about dance music, but I’m struggling to believe that this some of dance music’s best as opposed to just some of its most famous. Feels like a dance music recommendation from someone who doesn’t care all that much for dance music. I guess it was groovy and more or less enjoyable.
Groovy in parts. Probably needed to listen to it louder and at a different time of day to get into it. Nothing to dislike, love the image and the sound, just didn't seem to be in the right mood!
Worth listening to purely for Groove Is In The Heart, which never disappoints. The rest was nice enough, but nothing massively stood out for me.
Fun and poppy album! Nothing seems to drag on too long and was moving the beat consistently. 3.3
Groove is in the Hoooouuuse
Þessi plata er jú viss stemming og allt það, en gæðin eru ekki slík að hún eigi heima hérna.
What a strange album, very 90’s and not really that bad at all. Groove is a jam and Try Me on is the only true dud on this. 3 stars
This wasn’t as bad as I assumed it to be. It was definitely groovy and I didn’t get sick of it at all and it was fun to listen to. Unfortunately I think it really didn’t bring much and I don’t see myself searching for it again.
As an album it can get a little boring but there were more than enough "surprisingly interesting/fun" cuts to make this one a pleasant surprise. "Who Was That?" and the classic "Groove Is In The Heart" are my faves - overall it's a *little* lightweight but I've definitely highlighted a few tracks to listen to again, and you could do a lot worse at a party than putting this disc on. 6/10 3 stars
Iconic 90’s vibes here. I just don’t get much depth from this album.
the album I didn't know I needed. soulful early 90s house? sign me the fuck up.
Suprised at how much I enjoyed this album! I really liked the vibrant, bouncy beats. It felt very 90's, even though it came at the very beginning of the decade.
Groove is in the heart is one of the best house songs ever and music video was equally awesome. The rest of the album is just too generic. And forgettable
Good to hear. Catchy.
Interesting pick. I think a lot of people probably think this kind of music is cheesy but I dig it. I love me some dance music. However, as is usually the case with dance music, this gets repetitive and old fairly quickly. That bassline in "Groove Is in the Heart" is to DIE for. Hmm idk I may be ready to take back what I said about repetition. The beat on "Who Was That?" is pretty cool too.
What a fun time! This band should have had a cartoon!
Groovy, but a bit annoying at times
Fun funky fun. 3/5
This felt like a great single with a lot of feeder.
3 stars for groove is in the heart
Couldn't have picked a better day for this album - went to a roller skating rink with my family. It for the vibe just right :) That said, even on the most perfect of days for me, was still an album that was just okay. I could hear lots of songs that were sampled by others which was also neat. 3/5
Great album, a lot of it felt like background grooves rather than in your face awesomeness. Groove is in the Heart is a classic, I'd never heard anything else by Deee-Lite!
groove is in the air
Viihdyttävä ja tanssittava.
Dance-y disco-y music. Groovy, but nothing too special. Stand-out: World Clique
This is what I would expect to be playing in the background of a hip hip dance training video. Very of it’s time. Over all not bad production quality. I don’t enjoy repetitive beats very much though. I’d say 3/5
Everyone should know 'Groove Is In The Heart' but would be hard-pressed to name another Deee-Lite track. That's a shame as this album contains plenty of great tracks that really capture the period when the 80's became the 90's.
Unique, fun, worth a listen. 3 stars
Probably good if you like dance music. I don’t.
Truly an album of its time. The predecessor to Jock Jams that would rule the stadium world for decades. That nostalgia drip is real and still brings a smile to my face. Maybe not one to have on repeat but holds a special place in your heart.
Good rhythm.
Origineel 90s albumpje.
Slick 90's dance party, and Groove Is In The Heart is pretty rad. But this is an album I would ned to be in a specific mood to jump into.
Groove is in the heart
Fine, but one song does make an album worth listening to.
1990 - House music, Dance music, Funk, Pop music, Techno, Pop rock, Psychedelic music
not my cup of tea but a solid classic
It's a bop.
favourite song: groove is in the heart not a lot to say
Funky tecno dance music. A bit annoying after a while
Singer has a good voice. I found the music and mix upbeat while not too repetitive. Good listening, despite not being really my style of music.
Hmm, interesting
Felt like I was shopping at Lane Bryant.
The cover alone, that blend of end-of-80s-into-early-90s was too much to resist. aaaand quickly became the same thing over and over. meh.
Surprised as I thought they were a one hit wonder, but this is a solid effort.
Groovy, fun, kinda forgettable.
Some great tunes, very of its time
Not bad. I enjoyed it more than most of the “dance albums” I’ve heard on the list
If someone played this in the club I’d be stoked. Tough as a casual listen all the way through haha
Decent
Dance music, but not electronic. Persistent beats with some instrumentals and vocals over top
Props for the most 90s album cover of all time. But let’s be real - this is basically disco with some rapping at the very end. Appreciated that, but I hold to my belief that this kind of music is not meant for the album form. Light 3.
Innocuous club music with one killer earworm.
