I really enjoyed that, but maybe just because 90s. Funky. Who knew they were more than just Groove is in the Heart?
-perfect encapsulation of the late 80's and early 90's -groovy, funky, jazzy, danceable -nostalgia
Fun album. Enjoyed the beat.
Great funky album. Note of uniquely fun sons with a couple classics
Good dance album, positive, fun, and upbeat. Groove Is In The Heart is the standout.
Heard before: yes My party record! This played front to back to front to back in so many parties in the 90s that I can’t be impartial. The sense of optimism, good times, forever forward thinking, and inclusiveness along with Good Beats and slinky little melodies… this was a moment of real sunshine in the early 90s until grunge came and farted its cloud of dirt on everything. Ah well. Groove still is, and always will be, in my heart. Lady Miss Kier 4EVA! Top tracks: Groove Is In the Heart, Who Was That?, What Is Love?
Dee-Lite Theme
Has stood the test of time. These folks would perform these songs live.
When I think of 90's club dance music, this is a the group I think of. Simple beats and mixtures that slap. Enjoyed the listen. Not music I would listen to all of the time, but mainly because I'm not a club dance music person, not because I don't like the sound.
What a great party! It felt like an underground sound that was ready for a mainstream audience. While a couple of songs sounded too similar, overall, I could press play and just enjoy the ride. “Groove is in the Heart” is one of the greatest dance song ever created.
Infectious. Energetic. Joyful. Artistic. A breath of fresh air from the everyday. By the time you get to The Groove is in the Heart, you're already happy. I probably wouldn't be able to handle this intensity more than the length of one album, though. But that's more about me than them.
This album is so funky. Really dig the grooves. Feel it in my heart. Glad I tried this one on.
pretty cool dance album overall and obviously Groove is in the Heart is an all time banger
More piano runs and "proper" house than I was expecting. The one, obvious hit single stood out as head and shoulders above the rest. I was expecting an album of fillers and, although it wasn't an album of killers, it wasn't too bad.
A fun album that brought back a ton of 90’s nostalgia. I would be happy to hear it again in certain situations, however it’s not an album that I would want to regularly listen to in my free time. Cool as dance music.
Another surprise for me! Really enjoyed the throw back to my club days. Had heard the ubiquitous "Groove is in the Heart" but enjoyed the whole album.
Fun party music. Better than I expected.
Groove is in the heart plus.
This was sweet. Groovy baby!
Funky albom
Very fun album, a few songs sounded very samey but it's so weird and eclectic I didn't even mind
Groove is indeed still in the heart
Was going to rate it 3, but they closed out with that Streets of Rage sound
damn... while I heard "Groove is in the Heart" before the rest of the album was all new to me and it is amazing. Amazing stuff!
These guys had a whole ALBUM? And it's... a GOOD album? 90's bangers, deep house beats, and a bit of New York hip hop too. That's a funky total surprise.
Groove IS in the heart
Groove is in the Heart is a fantastic banger. The rest is house-tinged club stuff, it's quite good, it doesn't really have the hooks but it does have the style. Good Beat was better second time around. Tbh. While nothing else stands out apart from the obvious, this is a good mood on an album. Needs to be listened to when you've finished work on a sunny day. Then it gets a 4. Any other time it scrapes a 3.
Hit Groove Is in the Heart. Dance. Chulo.
So fun to listen to an entire Deee-Lite album!! Groove is in the Heart is an all-time banger. Surprising that it was released in 1990, a fun party album and although it's lacking a bit of variety, it's a good unique fun sound and perfect for what it is meant for.
So fun, groove is in the heart is an absolutely wonderful timeless song
This got me in a party mooooooood. Love it. Obvs Groove is in the Heart is an absolute banger but the rest was great too
Leuke plaat vol positivisme. En erg dansbaar
The most 90s techno album I've ever heard
this was actually a great pitta fun so
I was bumping the whole time.
Of the ecstacy scene of the early 90s, this stands next to the mondays as the finest. Killer beats, crisp production and an immense appetite for originality lead to this being a gripping listen, even if a couple of the album tracks aren't as brilliant as standalone tracks as Groove Is In The Heart. A great record.
Basically Beyonce's latest album but more fun.
I'd get sweaty in the club to these beats.
Pure 90s dance joy. Fun and happy, evoking such a specific time and place. I know that hip hop's origins are several years before this, but this specific album feels like such a transition. It's halfway between disco and hip hop in the perfect way. Can't go full five; it becomes a bit repetitive. Would need to revisit.
*Me pulling up the album cover*: oh christ wtf is this nightmare *me within the first 20 seconds of track 1*: 🤩🕺🏼✨ this spoke to both my soul and booty and I loved it
This was fire. Jungle dance beats galore. This is absolutely oozing early 90s vibes, and I was just soakin it in. GROOVE IS IN THE HEAAAAAAAAAAARRRRT
When Deee-Lite released the single "Groove is in the Heart", it was everywhere. I think that they had a second single, but I can't remember what it was. Besides the one single I remember, the rest of World Clique was new to me. This album was a happy surprise. The music was fun and interesting. If Deee-Lite truly never made it out of being categorized as a one-hit-wonder, it's a shame. I'd listen to this album again.
1/18- Driving to school Amazing samples throughout the entire album
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Good beat, Groove is in the heart, Who was that
Groove is indeed in the heart. A record that was seen as trendy and inconsequential at its time but it stood the test of time well. The tracks that weren't hits are also very solid and funky. Good hearing.
I know I am in the minority but I love this album. I think this record launch an entirely new genere of music with house and DJ beats.
Very groovy
So I assumed they were one hit wonders, but no, an actual album of decent commercial house. I was a little bit young for the entire album but look at the talent on this - Maceo, Bootsy & Fred! And this is so polished and easy to listen on. Still hard not to have a little jiggle to Groove In The Heart!
Fun stuff. Only really listened to a few songs from this band but the whole album was a joy to listen to.
I liked this a lot! I love dance music and am not picky about it, but I do particularly love early 90s dance like this. How great is "What is Love"?! If you told me it was recorded yesterday, I'd believe it. I don't love Lady Miss Kier's voice, so this album drops from a 5 to a 4.5 for me.
This album was somewhat less interesting than I hoped, but it also comes from that period when electronic music was just on the cusp of technological advances that would make it a lot more interesting. Overall the album is good, with a lot of fun disco-style beats matched to more modern electronic instruments. In some ways it reminds me of the Jamiroqaui album I got on this list, but less mature because of the earlier era. It seems like this album crawled so that Jamiroquai could walk on moving sidewalks. Worth a listen despite the fact that it is a bit dated 4/5
There be some samples on here
Really groovy
Groove Is In The Heart is a stone cold classic - everyone knows that! The rest of the lp is not quite that standard, but thats forgiven as nothing could really top G.I.I.T.H.
I can't really think of a better name for this group. They truly are delightful. Dee-Lite was such a breath of fresh air in 1990. Nothing else sounded like them. Between the campy style and the out of this world bricolage of sounds, I think a lot of people treated them as a novelty or just didn't know what to do with them. But musically, Dee-Lite is no joke. Their blending of live playing and samples is so effortless and creative. Their collaboration with Q-Tip and funk masters like Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, and Maceo Parker adds a depth you don't always get in club/house music, not to mention some serious musical street cred. Dee-Lite really captured in a bottle this club-centric energy that was so fresh at that time. The music is colorful, exuberant, groovy and soulful. It has a playful sense of humor, but not a whiff of irony. This is earnest and optimistic in a way that music hasn't been in a really long time. It's a real mood lifter and so much fun to listen to. Their subsequent albums lacked the same fire, but World Clique is a classic. Fave Songs: Groove Is in the Heart, Power of Love, Good Beat, What Is Love?, Deep-Ending, Who Was That?, Build the Bridge
un très bon album, je les ai largement sous estimés
Highlight: Deee-Lite Theme
When I loaded up the 1001 page for the day, I had to do a double take to make sure I wasn't seeing things. It's Deee-Lite! This is an album that my family and I used to jam to together and it's always been a guilty pleasure of mine to go back to from time to time.
Bridget is a fan
Another of those classic albums that has so many memories tired up in it for me. Still such a ground breaking and more importantly fun album.
did not expect to see deee-lite knocking about on an album based list, but who knew they had anything else other than one of my all time favourite tracks. did some wikipediafiling and what a fucking mad bunch. american, ukrainian and japanese raised korean making music from new york that to me sounds like it came from the british house scene. not actually a bad album, nice to hear some 90s dance every now and then.
Super fun album! I put it on for a party after hearing and it really makes a lively environment. Disco vibes. One of the songs I recognized from a Fergie song that was sampled.
A dance party that still sounds just as crazy and futuristic today. Fun, with quite an impressive guest list for a group making their debut. At times a little cheesy. Something that only really could have come out in the early 90s and gained traction. Favorite tracks: "Deee-Lite Theme", "Groove Is In the Heart"
Gostei. Mistureba bacana, gostei principalmente das músicas com uma pegada House. De fato soa como um álbum de uma época específica. 7/10
a vó do nelson come nuggets
Part late 80s/early 90s New York House and garage, part funk and part hip-hop, ‘World Clique’ is a clever, fun and accomplished debut record. Featuring serious star power in Q-Tip, Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker (amongst others) making unexpected but great contributions, it’s the little record that could and the ultimate New York party record of its era.
Had me moving and grooving.
Fun, 80's dance
Não conhecia. Bom para usar de trilha sonora de festa.
4/5. Kinda fire. No guilty pleasures.
rimelig banging
I actually liked this.
I liked it
Spontaneously enjoyable!!
Top stuff.
Fun and warm. Captures that New York dance club feeling really well. Groove is in the heart is a standout in many ways. Like the heavy infusion of soulful elements throughout.
A fun fun album that I had never listened to completely before. Groove is in the heart is great but there are a number of tracks worthy of praise as well. I'm going 4 stars
Better than expected
Hilarious album cover and groovy beats. A full album got to be a bit much and some of the music is painfully 90s but that doesn't stop this from being a jam.
Funky old school 80s vibes
Bubbly, funky, joyous--instantly mood-altering stuff.
Production: 16/20 Songwriting: 13/20 Innovation: 15/20 Bangers: 15/20 Emotional response: 17/20 =76 Cracking album!
This was just a fun time!
Groove Is in the Heart obviously a hit. Had no idea who it was by or that Q-Tip had a feature. Lots of bouncy beats here, just makes me want to dance. Familiar piano riff on Good Beat... is that sampled in some other song? Same thing in Try Me On... I'm Very You.
Fun album, great pop dance tracks
5/10
I always though of Dee-lite as a one hit wonder and after listening to this album I don’t think my opinion has changed. Unapologeticly 90s throughout with an imagery that screams something else. Fun little album to have on in the background with plenty of grooves like the opening “Deee-Lite Them”. Nothing really beats “Groove Is in the Heart” though. 3 stars.
Well this was deelightful. (Sorry, not sorry) Obviously the hit is a worldie that brings joy across eras, but whats the album like? Turns out its some sort of proto piano house, 90's disco indie thing. The groove is still there but in the rest of the album its frozen in its time like Han Solo in Carbonite. Some ridiculous nonsense lyrics early on signal that this isnt an undiscovered new Dylan album but its fun, upbeat and held up by the groove in jts heart.
Starts out real cool with Maceo blowin that horn, seems like this is going to be a fun club/house album, and there are those moments here and there throughout the album. Most of it just sounds like any other 80's & 90's electronic dance music. I will save the few fun songs on my streaming playlist but not an album I need to own.
- Power of love - Groove is in the heart
Groove is in the Heart is an absolute classic, but I don't think the rest of the album is very solid. It's unique and interesting and I haven't quite heard anything like it, but I'm not a big fan.
So incredibly 90s -- I didn't hate it!
Overall Rating - 2.83/5 (5.67/10). Very catchy, even though I'm not a fan of most dance pop.
Though I love electronica and dance, even I can admit that "Groove is in the Heart" remains the only essential thing on this album. Although it should be noted that since Deee-Lite formed in 1986 and gigged, the band pre-dates the Madchester scene. As a result it feels like it deserves a rating of 2.5 stars, but given their influence on later acts, I'll round it up to 3. My other favorites off this album, the instrumental "Build the Bridge"
A fun ride, but not everything is worth it. They tried a healthy fusion of genres, and it definitely has a sound but overall it doesn't grip as much as I would like it too. It's not boring, and it's quite strange, just not it's moment for me.
Perfectly fine dance-pop album.
So I might’ve gone into this album with too high hopes/expectations. Mainly because “Groove is in the heart” is an all time great song! Genuinely one of my favorite songs! So I just expected more of that greatness. And the album wasn’t bad, but it did take some time to build some momentum. The album really starts to take off at the song “Smile On”. From that point on the album is sick. I just wish they had cut the album down alittle cause there are a good handful of unmemorable skippable songs. The magic that this album has though is it just feels like a party. Genuinely this would be a great album to put on if people were coming over. So to conclude, yes I probably had too high expectations, but they do have “Groove is in the Heart” which means they are musical geniuses IMO.
Retro Funk
Festive! Fun dance pop that says, “hi, the nineties are here”. More slow-groove songs than I expected— “Groove” sounds like a track from a different record. Good times.
Kind of a cool album. Outside of their one big hit, there was a lot of decent house music. It was enjoyable for sure.
A lively album full of songs with sounds from the 70’s disco era (despite being recorded in 1990). Funky and soulful with a collaboration of many instruments that make a unique sound. The lead vocalist has an amazing range and it fits perfectly with the playful nature of the album.
Below average. Low 3. The songs just aren’t very good.
на любителя.
Oh Christ, this takes me back! There are some great songs on here, bangers in fact but there is also quite a bit of filler… Shame!
I admire this more than I actually like it. I imagine this goes HARD during a party though, like I could absolutely get down to this in a social setting.
Better than I thought it would be
Groovyyyyyyyyy
Strong start, got a bit repetitive in the middle then the strong save with "Groove is in the Heart." I got fatigued with that song in the 90's but listening years later, there was a reason it was on all the time. Perfectly acceptable album.
For me this is like ABBA. If you don’t like it you don’t like having fun. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Fun early 90s dance tracks. “Groove is in the Heart” is iconic obviously.
Weak 3. I could give it a 2 but I will be more generous and give it a 3.... okay actually after rethinking it wasnt that great so yeah. Idk it deserves like 2,5. But I cant give it 2,5. I guess i recently rated something way worse a 2 so I guess this is a 3. Eh.
I probably haven't listened to this full album since high school. "Groove is in the Heart" is a 5-star classic. The rest gets it to a 3.9 for me, not quite a 4. But fun stuff. These guys were great.
Groove is in the heart is pretty great. Otherwise, a solid roller rink album from the 90's.
I like the energy here
Wouldn't have known that Groove Is in the Heart is by these guys, that's awesome. Otherwise this is just decent, nothing else really stood out to me.
I'm embarrassed that I didn't know who sung Groove Is in the Heart prior to listening to this album. Some nice stuff here, but 80s/90s dance music isn't really my genre.
This definitely plays to my early 90s house influenced pop sensibilities! I was a big fan of _Groove is in the Heart_ at the time and still am... an all-time banger! I didn't konw who Bootsy Collins and Q-Tip were back then, but I certainly do now! I was initially surprised that I didn't listen to the album at the time but then I remembered I was only 11 and back then, you only had access to music through buying or taping it from someone else. So there's a nostalgia for the sound here and I may return to this on occasions for that reason but I'm not sure that this is essential.
2/3
Hard not to want to dance or put a smile on your face while listening to this, and honestly it’s a more coherent album than I expected. But there is little in the lyrics to provoke a thought beyond those things…
This is a great dance album. I don't know if I'll ever listen to it all the way through again, but I will for sure listen to more songs off it than before it popped up on my generator.
This was fun, and I love Groove is in the Heart, but the whole album was a little long for me. Three stars.
I LOVE THIS BUT ANYONE WHO EATS CHIPS INTO A MICROPHONE SHOULD SUMMARILY BE LAUNCHED INTO DEEP SPACE. IT HAS NEVER BEEN COOL. EVER. WHO IS THAT FOR. NEGATIVE ONE STAR JUST FOR THAT. SAME WITH FUTURE ON THAT ONE ALBUM. Y ARE YOU DOING THIS BRO. STOP
While I love the creativity and funky beats at the core of this album, overall it's just slightly better that your run of the mill 90's programmed dance music. The album settles in as enjoyable background music....... and then Groove Is in the Heart hits. It immediately elevates itself above everything heard prior and makes you take notice. There is a different energy with the song and it's undeniable. I think this album is unique enough and had a large enough impact for inclusion on this list, but it won't come away having left a lasting impression on me.
This album was pretty good, but I had the same issue with it that I have with a lot of dance stuff, which is that after a while it all blends a little. Which is understandable, this isn’t really meant to be heard in one sitting, or in my house. It’s meant to be played on the floor, and I’m sure there it goes crazy, but at 8:15 in the morning it doesn’t hit the same. Favorites: E. S. P., Groove Is In the Heart
I wouldn't say that this was a bad album, I remember it as fine to have on in the background. But I barely remember listening to it. I think the beats are probably too repetitive for too long for me to remember to pay attention. I'd have liked some more switch ups other than other "lyrics" Standouts - 3/5
It was certainly fine. I don’t have much experience with drum and bass so to speak but it had some really cool beats; that being said it overstays its welcome and overall I can’t see myself choosing it over most other albums.
Groove is in the Heart is an obvious banger, but that aside this didn't really interest me very much. It's all competent, but without that tune it'd probably be a 2 for lack of interest
Fun listen..who didn’t like “Grove is in the heart “ not sure how this made the list … but was what I needed today
A good time and easy to groove to, even though it gets predictable after a while
I want to give this higher than a 3 but not quite a 4
I was in junior high when Groove Is In the Heart hit. Interesting to know there was a very solid album around it that I never thought to check out. Sample quality and selection is amazing for 1990.
It was fun and upbeat. Interesting though that it is club music, it does have that vibe but also doesn't seem intense enough. Its like club music from 7-9, early scene when the lights aren't quite out yet.
It's pretty okay. Groove In the Heart is a great song but I've heard it so many times that I'm kind of over it. So I was hoping to like some other songs. I liked E.S.P. and Build the Bridge. The rest were okay.
Groove Is In The Heart is such a fabulous song. The rest of the tracks don’t really measure up to that one, but it was still a fun and uplifting ride.
Groove is in the heart and a bunch of other tracks with the same vibe (but less memorable). I don't dislike anything, but I'm probably not going back.
Verrassend funky album. Ik dacht dat ik er nog nooit van had gehoord maar toen kwam groove is in the heart ineens om de hoek kijken. Het album eindige helaas wel een beetje saai waardoor het uiteindelijk een 3 is geworden
Groovy
= the Beatles It's fun
80s plastic funk works, sometimes.
This album is packed with fun, energetic beats, but a lot of it feels like straight-up dance club or ’90s aerobics music. It’s enjoyable in bursts, but doesn’t have much depth beyond the groove.
Man I only ever heard their one hit but the whole album was like that lol it was ok not my jam lol
Good singles, but not much else to retain attention.
i just about liked it. Smile On was my favorite, Groove Is in the Heart was also obviously pretty tight. soft 3
Pretty fun and enjoyable. A collection of repetitive-by-design groovy jammers (and another hard album cover). A little shallow but still pretty fresh and even has a Q-Tip feature !?!?! 6.7/10
I quite liked this, when I didn’t expect to, I know the main song well, but the rest of the album was pretty decent
Odd but fun.
Album intéressant / amusant
For a house album with a very eccentric singer and aims to be infectious and exciting, it is rather flat and boring at times. It starts great with the tracks "Deee-Lite Theme" and "Good Beat". The first is a great opener that creates hype for the project, and the second is a very infectious and fun song, although the choruses are a bit underwhelming, as they remove the pianos and melodies that make the verses so cheerful. I also find it really funny, because is in these parts that the singer sings "I just wanna hear a good beat" and it is also when the beat gets the driest. Following this great start, the record begins to lose a lot of steam, with the following songs getting progressively more boring, as they lack anything exciting, the beats are very stale and the great attitude of the singer isn't enough to keep the energy. Then comes the three tracks "What Is Love", "World Clique" and "E.S.P.", which are more techno and downtempo oriented and have a more serious sound. While the change its appreciated, as the previous tracks were getting a bit tedious, these songs aren't really that great. Maybe a bit groovy, but nothing memorable. Fortunately, the next song is the big hit "Groove Is In the Heart", which is incredibly fun, has a incredibly funky bass line and nice rap feature from Q-tip. However, the last three songs pale in comparison, coming back to the bad streak of forgettable songs. When it comes to give it a score, I was struggling deciding what to give it, but I think it is passable enough to give it 3 stars.
I thought this album was really fun but it got much better after Groove is In the Heart. That's definitely the stand out track. I didn't hate the rest of the album but likely would never listen to this again.
Listening session: march 28th, while eating lunch and running errands Listened to before: listened to one song many times before Thoughts: I’ve loved Groove Is in the Heart since I was a child and while the rest of this album is still groovy, it’s not as catchy as that song is unfortunately Favourite tracks: Groove Is in the Heart & Good Beat
So very very early 90s. I do think the album got better as it went along.
Tror den her plade har inspireret noget af det værste musik fra 90erne, men det kan den jo ikke gøre for. Synes det var fed!
Era muy divertido
Cool album that kept me engaged to the end. There's definitely a sameness with a full album that bleeds tracks together, but there was enough inventiveness to keep up the groove!
A decent, if forgettable, house party starter pack. It's got its moments. "Groove Is in the Heart" is an undeniable jam, but it leans too hard on nostalgia and not enough on innovation. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Good Beat - What Is Love? - Groove Is in the Heart
Fine.
Hard to resist fun and a Bootsy appearance.
This was actually fun
this came as a pleasant surprise. a lot of tracks stood out to me and i bopped to them, rather than it just washing over me while i listened. all in all, a good dance music album.
Deee-Lite has a really fun sound, but it gets old about halfway through the album. "Groove is in the Heart" is fun, but it's so similar to the other songs that I don't know why it's the standout.
I was kind of expecting to like this more than I actually did with the description and crazy album art. But this feel quite a bit short. There were some decent songs in here though, I enjoyed Deee-Lite Theme, as well as Groove is In the Heart. Listened while doing work on a kinda miserable/rough day. Did not improve my mood, but it also didn't make it worse... so take that as you will.
groovy
This was a fun listen, especially 'Groove is in the heart', which I always thought was ''Groovers' in the hall!'. Live and learn.
Funk without the intent. Electronica without the intensity. i respect it, but I don't like it 2.5
It’s dance music....If you have listen to the radio in the 90s then you have heard of version of every song on this album. It’s cool for background noise it’s not great but it’s not bad. It’s funky. It reminds me of rollerskating in the 90s
Very groovy, very fun. Good Beat and Groove Is in the Heart were my favorites. Kinda felt repetitive after a while but still very solid. 5.8/10
Super fun with a couple of specific huge hits
i acc think i liked this
Some bops latter Half, first half was tough at times
album qui met de bonne humeur
Would have rather listened to Groove is in the Heart 12 times in a row. 2.5
Quite interesting. Groovey and catchy sometimes, definitely will hear it once again later.
It’s fun, ain’t no rocket science.
Very dated and mostly rubbish but Groove Is In The Heart slaps so hard I’m willing to forgive a lot of sins
Really cool, constant vibess
Divertido e dançante
Better than Coldplay
It’s all about the one single, right? And what a single. But there’s more going on besides - with Bootsy magic dust sprinkled here and there.
Is this not a one hit wonder band with Groove is in the Heart? Such a great single. Actually, discovered that this album makes for pretty good listening for all the other tracks, albeit at a slightly less fabulous level than Groove is in the Heart.
Gillar det. Blir ju lite utfyllnad här och där.
There are a few really fun songs on this album, and a few that are just samey-same filler. I skipped those about halfway through each. This group impresses me as often as they disappoint me
Bueno
I remain vexed as to why Deee-Lite is in this book. They aren't British/Scottish/Irish, so they don't have that going for them. Maybe it is the cover, which screams "THIS ALBUM IS FROM THE LATE 80'S/EARLY 90'S AND LOOK AT THIS SAVED BY THE BELL-TYPE FONT!" Either way, I knew two of these songs and they are both in my head from listening to the radio while I was growing up. A lot of this went in one ear and out the other for me. I didn't even notice when the next Deee-Lite album started playing. "What is Love" has the second most plays and I have to wonder how many people hit that song thinking it's the other "What is Love" song from the early 90's. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense that such an average track would be so popular. I would not listen to this again and in a book where there are tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons tons and tons and tons and tons of dance/electronic records, this one doesn't stand out too much to me. Groove is in the Heart is a good song though. My favorite tracks: Power of Love Try Me On...I'm Very You Groove is in the Heart Deep Ending
"Groove is in the Heart" is truly awesome and nothing on this record comes close to it, sadly. There is a lot of good stuff, though. Much of it sounds pretty dated, but some still hold up.
This will always remind me of the baby dance from Always Sunny. It also could have been a single.
This was exactly what I thought it would be...and that is....fine. "Who was that?" Was kind of weird and random and fun
A good album, I liked Good Beat and Groove Is In The Heart the most.
I wasn’t expecting much from a one hit wonder band but this was an excellent album. It’s just a lot of fun, and if you dig in a little bit, the production is stellar. Also, Q-Tip and Bootsy Collins make appearances! If you’re reading this before listening, do yourself a favor and listen with headphones, they play with the stereo sound a lot and it’s best experienced in headphones.
Favorite Track: Deee-Lite Theme
Sounded like the whole decade of 90s dance pop in 1990, so good on them. "Groove is in the Heart" is the crowd pleaser and I agree.
Groove is in the Heart is a banger. The rest of the album is meh, but credit for being on the cutting edge of the dance culture, as the sound is reminiscent of house music that comes out in the next couple of years.
:) really stupid but actually really good, 90s house is phenomenal
The sound of a changing decade - if ever an album sounded like 1990 it’s this one. Sampling is now becoming an art form and the use of Herbie Hancock’s ‘Blow up’ soundtrack for the (now legendary) ‘groove is in the heart’ dominates this album. It now sounds of its time but, 36 years ago, everyone who could was attempting this approach.
I enjoyed this again today like I always do and there were more strong moments than I had remembered. Deee-Lite had a lot going for them, but not quite the goods to stand up to the success of their big hit. It’s a shame really, the album is a decent listen and a genuine attempt at just that, an album, in a genre that was still focused on standalone tracks to light up dance floors. Still no matter how positive I can be about World Clique, I’m enough of a realist to know it’s not an album that should be in the 1001.
With their unique style, cool swagger, and a huge hit (this song still slaps!!) I thought this group would have been bigger. It’s a fun album to bop your head to. It mixes cool beats, great vocals from Lady Miss Kier, and a sense of humor. This album won’t bring about world peace, but it will help you forget about the orange menace for a bit.
Huh. Well, okay then. This is something, alright. Deee-Lite are a group that I don't know much about. Apparently they're seen as a bit of a one-hit-wonder to some? Interesting. That one hit is on this album, and it's pretty good. "Groove Is in the Heart" is a solid song. The energy of it and the whole album are certainly respectable. It's pretty unique compared to the other albums on this list all things considered. Plus, I have to give props to any song with a Q-Tip feature. Despite the massive acclaim that A Tribe Called Quest has received over the years, I feel like Q-Tip himself is pretty underrated as a rapper, so it's cool to hear him on literally anything. As for the album at large, it's alright. The album's a little repetitive and not super exciting, but there's nothing on here that I dislike. The production is fun. The album has its moments. The writing and vocals are okay, but not outstanding. I could definitely see this lighting the club up back in the early 90s, but I'm not really that type of person, so this doesn't do as much for me. It's good and that's about it. I respect World Clique, even if it's not an album that I'll think about that much after today. 3/5.
Probably helped that I was cooking whilst listening. Fun album to fry onions to.
Couldnt play it as intended: On a Friday night. Off your bonce. So that probably harmed it on 1st listen. Enjoyed its' 90s rave-ness and Groove on 2nd listen. Lyrically abysmal at times but Its a top tier example of what it is: 90's to its' core
Wasn’t sure on this album at first. Just sounded like every other 90s dance music but on 2nd listen I got to say I enjoyed it more. It’s certainly a grower. Not saying it’s amazing or anything but would definitely listen to it again
groove is in the heart is one of the best songs ever written, but some other songs (build the bridge) sort of induced a sensory overload. perfectly balanced i suppose
I hadn't listened to this album for years and years. I saw it come up and thought "oh yes finally a banger of an album that isn't yet another random britpop band that was popular in Manchester for three weeks". Reader, I was disappointed. The album is not a banger. The Song is a banger (you know which one) but the rest of the tracks are all kind of mid. Without The Song this would be a solid two-star album.
Recurring theme of back in the day me dismissing something outright before even giving it a chance. This is a pretty fun album but does tend to feel same-y after awhile.
Wanted to hate it again, but these are some pretty nice grooves from time to time. It also is kinda ahead of the time a little bit. The sampling techniques are pretty breakthrough things in 1990. Was not expecting to hear Q tip on this one though. Low 3
I was recommended this before and never got around to it. I did know Groove is in the Heart so was pretty excited but in the end this mix of early dance and late funk fell a bit flat. The track World Clique was interesting but everything else didn't sustain attention. I could listen to it again but probably won't.
The only Deee-Lite song I know is “Groove Is in the Heart,” which I think is a really goofy but fun jam. However, I don’t really have high hopes for this album, because I don’t want to listen to a full album of songs that sound like “Groove Is in the Heart.” This album would have to have some pretty catchy hooks and a decent amount of variation for me to vibe with it, and I just don’t know if I’m going to find that here. Here’s hoping that my last album of 1990 will hold some surprises for me! I wasn’t wowed by World Clique, but I didn’t hate it either. I expected this album to be a bit goofy and for Deee-Lite to sound like a novelty act, but this was a pretty fun house album. I thought that Deee-Lite had a unique way of crafting their sound, bringing their own spin on disco to the nineties. The production on this album is solid, and I was really surprised to learn that Bootsy Collins and Q-Tip were on this album. Outside of “Groove Is in the Heart,” I enjoyed the songs with piano melodies the most on this album, because it felt like the bright piano sounds really matched Deee-Lite’s whole image really well. On top of that, most of these songs had pretty good bass grooves to them as well. My biggest gripe with this album was that for a dance album, it didn’t really have many catchy hooks, and parts of it felt like they didn’t have much energy. World Clique was a fun album, and I enjoyed it while I was listening to it, but as soon as it ended, it left my mind almost immediately.
Better than I expected
I'm being nice by not knocking an entire star off for the eating noises in Who Was That?, a song about a guy being in your house. This album takes place in the same "New York City" as RENT.
Funky fun album, great vibes and some hit songs. Can’t say this is something I’d listen to regularly, but a good album nonetheless.
Didn't know this group aside from their big single. Mostly forgettable dance tracks but a few other bangers.
Son canciones que escuchas de fondo en un video de youtube o en la calle. Se te termina olvidando su existencia a las cuantas horas.
Good beatin zuwa-zuwa jää varmaan soimaan päähän. Muutenkin hauska tanssilevy!
Groove is in the Heart is a nostalgic banger that takes me right back to middle school, but the rest of this album is….different. I don’t know that I would place this in the 90’s if I didn’t know anything about it. Some good beats but also somewhat repetitive and grating at times. (3)
Deeeeeee-LITE heck yeah this is bouncing and its hype.Very old school and the bongs are everywhere. The lyrics go away for the last song and I think it works a bit better that way sometimes. This is interesting, it gets spooky, it gets industrial, it gets super bongo. Sometimes it gets B boy old school, it dances everywhere, and thankfully, it has rhythm. I love this, and I will find myself coming back to these are this is a hidden gem in the era that felt filled with electronic head bops this felt like they wanted to make something fun and interesting. Lady Miss Kier steals the show. I even hear some Wu-Tang vibes here.
some other really good hits i missed due to "groove's" success. liked it
Groovy vibe
Like this is kinda enjoyable but I wouldn’t come back to it I don’t think. Groove in the Heart does absolutely rock but the others feel mainly like disco mumbo jumbo.
The 90s equivalent of house music I fear...
This is fun music to make soup to do, which is what I’m doing now. The one song was familiar but just barely. These guys look like they’d be really fun at a BYOB bowling alley birthday party.
Best listened to in a big group of sweaty twenty-somethings slightly crossfaded instead of blasting through excel spreadsheets in an office setting. Graded on a curve accordingly. Kind of amazing how little dance music has changed in the last 30-35 years. Other than the big hit, Good Beat and ESP really stand out as toe tappers for the abandoned warehouse. Shoutout to the Morricone cowboy whistle on ESP too. 3.5.
For a genre characterized by repetitive samples and drum beats, this stands out in a good way. It's as fun as how we remember a heavily nostalgia-tinted 90's being
they do have some good beats that really make me feel that grove in my heart... in almost an e.s.p way
4/1001 Seeing the cover and hearing the intro that sounds a bit like a pop version of De La Soul, I thought I'd be in for a sort of hip-hop-meets-breaks-meets-pop-meets-fusion Well, it's pretty conventional (AFAIK, I'm not versed in the genre) house music with endearing vocals. Not bad, but not transcendent either. They aren't from Manchester and they're not Cibo Matto either... 3/5
divertido, mas só.
Loved this as a kid. Not perfect and some filler, but upbeat and fun.
Nothing-special house music.
Fun and upbeat, classic 90s period piece.
What if some neo-hippies made dance music? "Groove is in the Heart" is a certified classic that still sticks with me years later. The rest of it is dated dance sounds that are fun but forgettable.
Very disco-inspired. A little strange for 1990. I imagine Groove Is in the Heart is the main reason for this record making the list, because musically, it's very early-80s. The basslines shine, obviously, and the electronic drums are actually pretty sick here. Power of Love has a dark, bloopy series of percussive SFX that wouldn't be out of place as retro video game noises. Later on the record, E.S.P. gets a little too indulgent with its electronics and suffers as a result. The final track, Build the Bridge, has the same problem, but it's even more repetitive and (arguably) dull – and blunts the end of the album as a result. Thankfully, the first half is ultra-solid. Deee-Lite Theme in particular has a sweet hip-hop drum beat and some great sax playing. Smile On should be noted for its extremely strange high-pitched glockenspiel-type effects that are panned around the head at outrageous speeds. It's a solid track with a nice guitar and horn section, but that percussion thing is so odd and distracting that you almost have to tune out the song during the chorus. In contrast, World Clique is a bit of a mess melodically and texturally, and it doesn't hit at all for me. The following track, E.S.P., isn't great either. The instrumental is repetitive and fully retro-electronic, making it feel kind of lifeless as a result. Fortunately, the album picks up with the monumental Groove Is in the Heart. It's ridiculously catchy and makes up for everything wrong with the songs leading up to it. But this project is about judging the albums – so alas, the lead single must only get 1/12 of the weighting. 3/5 Key tracks: Deee-Lite Theme, Try Me On... I'm Very You, Groove Is in the Heart
It's a fun album and there are some good tracks on it, but Groove is in the Heart stands out so noticeably as the ultimate banger. Would potentially listen to the full thing again though.
Fun songs for fun people
I've never listened to this album (76).
No strong feelings one way or the other. I have no nostalgia but can see how this would've been fairly important in 1990. Now, except for the Groove is in the Heart , why would I want to sit and listen to an album of generic dance music, some of which is too slow anyway ? Pretty unmemorable but wouldn't say I hated it.
The only song I knew going into this was Groove is in the Heart, which I like, but it led me to expect a bit more out of this album. Other than the aforementioned track, the rest of the album kinda fell flat for me.
There were some good moments on this album with house and funk elements, but "Groove is in the Heart" remains the biggest hit from this album.
Fun vibes
It’s not the best album out there, but it is fairly fun. Like that it has some pretty cool guests like Q-tip, Bootsy Collins and Maceo Parker. “Groove” is a fun song, but the rest of the album fails to live up to that standard. 3/5 Might listen again
A worldwide hit and mostly cheerful music. It's nice to hear the whole album.
overall unique album and has a fun new sound to it despite being old very enjoyable
Kinda repetitive dance music
Fair play to the editors for trying to recognise the invasion of 80s/early 90s club music into pop in the book. (See also Coldcut). But the album format is an uncomfortable way to way understand that phenomenon. Like all great pop music, singles were how it progressed, maybe 12" singles. So, you'd expect an album on the list to feature more than one monster hit from the UK or US chart. Admittedly it is one stonker of a monster hit but it is only one. I remember me and my pals who liked this stuff were a bit underwhelmed by the album given how high our expectations had risen off the back of Groove Is In The Heart. Alongside another reviewer's shout for Betty Boo I'd suggest Original Soundtrack by S-Express or even the monumentally repetitive Pump Up The Jam album by Technotronic, maybe the Betty Boo launchpad Anywayawanna by The Beatmasters, as better more hit laden examples they could have gone with.
Groovy
Love some good dance music. Not many high highs or low lows but pleasant while it's on.
Dated, but still fun. Some of it is actually pretty well-layered dance stuff, while the rest just reeks of the 90s. Did not mind it though.
Not the most memorable thing ever but enjoyed the songs enough to where I somewhat liked it
Dance music. Makes me think k of C+C Music Factory. Same vibes. Not a bad album, all the songs are listenable. Notable tracks include Good Beat, Smile On, What is Love, World Clique, Groove is in the Heart.
Just alright 2.5/5
Good album, I'm sure that I have never heard it before today. I was kind of jamming out thinking that some of the songs sounded familiar and then 'Groove is in the Heart" came on and I was like "Oh yeah". It all came together. It's a good album, kind of dance pop sort of stuff. Pretty much what you would expect for a 1990 pop album.
The positive vibes are lovely and the vocals are a standout. The songs tend to linger a bit long sometimes, but the medium of dance and pop music lends to just keeping the moments going for as long as they can. This record is well known almost exclusively for Groove is in the Heart, which is an iconic track that you will hear accidentally in your life at least a few hundred times. I don't think I've been to a wedding where a DJ didn't spin that track, and it always does the trick.
Album artwork has me a bit nervous and song 1 (Deee-Lite Theme) isn't helping despite a solid drum break Good Beat - Okay this isn't bad. I can get behind taking a little visit to house/club music like this for a bit. I've actually listened to a few DJ sets in the past week or 2 so maybe I'm primed for this Groove is in the Heart - Huge track! Love the vocal hook, breaks, not into the slide whistles Some fun stuff that feels like a time-capsule. Goofy at times, idk if that's just because of the modern perspective looking back or if it felt that way at the time. Seems like this album was critically acclaimed when it came out in 1990. Definitely zoned out while working with this one, it all kind of blended together but that's probably what it's for!! 3 feels a little higher than I'd like to rate it, but I don't think it deserves a 2. 3 it is.
I mean it’s all right
alright
Way more listenable than I anticipated.
Very funky an pleasant album. Very easy to listen to and catchy The singers voice is great and the saxophone parts might be even better. Its not one of my favorite genres but when some of the songs come up in the future I will definitely turn up the volume for a song or two.
This one was an interesting blend of pop and techno. I didn’t dislike it, but I never really got into it either. It kind of hovered in that middle space where it was fine to have on while I was working, but nothing about it grabbed me enough to pay closer attention. It has a cool vibe here and there, and the production is solid, but for me it ended up being more background noise than something I’d return to.
This was actually a lot more fun than I thought
The album started and ended on high notes, but it kind of lost me in the middle. The different mixes of genres worked really well.
A fun listen, certainly—I’ve been getting into synths recently, and it sounds like the kind of music I make when I’m playing around in my DAW, so I can relate. It’s also got perhaps the most 1990 album cover I’ve ever seen (and I say this derogatorily). Some nice use of samples, and “Groove is in the Heart” is a fun track to this day. Having said that, I didn’t feel that anything was ground breaking. I’m giving it 3 stars, not because it was bad, but because I truly feel fairly neutral about it.
6.5/10
Fun-ish. A bit repetitive. Groove is in the Heart is the standout. ★★★
Gustó, faltaría escuchar de vuelta porque siempre la primera escucha es difícil Nota: 3.6
This one of the most 90s things I've ever heard.
неожиданные самплы дискотеки аварии… в целом не показалось что группа одного хита, можно было бы слушать любителям жанра
Cool, funky album
This was a fun and pleasant way to spend 48 minutes. The big single totally dominates this record. There aren’t a bunch of other big missed singles here.
My first reaction was, why is a one-hit wonder on this list? Having read a little more of their bio, I guess it's probably because of their major impact on the New York club scene, dance music, etc. Also, I guess they had more than one hit. But I don't like dance clubs or scenes, and although the music is inoffensive I don't find much here for me. Rounding up from 2.5 because Groove is great, though.
3/5 - This was a fun 90s dance album to listen to -- better than I expected for sure. I had always thought "Groove.." was an oddball hit, and the whole album has some of that vibe, though nothing gets close to its catchy hooks.
I could hear this album as soon as I saw the cover. 3.
ok
Did you guys ever play any of the old Tekken games, or other similar PS2 era fighting games like MVC? You know the background tracks they play while you’re fighting? Got a bunch of random fun noises and sound effects. Yeah. This is that, and I kind of love it. It’s extremely dated, but in a very delightful and fun way where I still had a blast listening to it. A medium-high 3. It doesn’t do anything new or amazing as an Electronica album, but it’s fun to listen to all the way through, which is all I would really want from it. “Groove Is in the Heart” is the big one from this album. I’d actually heard of it before, and yeah, it’s the best song on the album as well. Very, very catchy stuff. I’m never going to complain about having to listen to an Electronica album. They’re always at the very least going to be an enjoyable experience. This one is no different. Groove is in the heeeeeeeeeeeeart (astronomical).
Miiid-Lite ... No, honestly, I didn't mind it, and even liked some of the more quirky production styles throughout. The samples in "E.S.P." are hilarious. But overall, this is too much of a superficial sound to fully catch my interest.
The music and this album cover clearly ushered in the 90s aesthetic. Honestly, I kinda enjoyed the music.
Nice, good
3/5
If you ate this every day, you'd starve to death, but it's a nice treat every once in a while.
It got that special kind of 90's corniness, of course, but otherwise it's not that bad. It's pretty well produced. Not so say it's necessarily good though. It's remarkably good at requiring very little attention to listen to. Sometimes almost forgot it was playing
Ca groove, c'est sympa, mais j'aurai probablement assez vite oublié. Je connaissais Groove is in the Heart, je savais pas que c'était d'eux
funky insanity.
Alright but not what I needed today
This was a lot of fun. Early 90s NYC dance music full of style and attitude. Perfect for a Sunday morning.
Fun. Dated, but fun.
siren,, its alright
I love when bands have their own theme songs.
Fun!
Funky lil vibe!!! Groove is in the heart is the highlight of course but this whole body of work holds weight! Good theme!
This is totally a sample of its time. Nice for a workout, and made me feel like I was back in the nineties. I was glad to hear a hit late in the track listing. Might not ever revisit this in full, but hey, if ever I’m throwing a nineties themed party…
70
Terrible album cover and yet… Groove is in the heart.
Upbeat music. Good rhythm that brings you in the groove. I didn't know this band. Good album.
Little weird. I like groove is in the heart
Dance, dance, dance! This is a very charmingly dated early-90's house pop album. Besides the huge hit "Groove Is in the Heart" there's a couple of pretty good songs, but the whole thing isn't really anything to write home about. Still, it's a great time while it's on. I wonder what happened to these guys. Key tracks: Good Beat World Clique Groove Is in the Heart
I wasn't aware of the amount of good songs in this album besides Groove Is In The Heart, which in itself is a legendary song. A dance record to put on and let the time roll by, lovely lyrics and a great experience overall.
It was enjoyable enough but I'm not sure why it's a must hear
2 or three fun tracks make not a worthwhile addition to such a list.
Day625 - groove is in the heart is so good it makes the album better
# Album Name: World Clique # Artist: Deee-Lite # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: A very dated album. Takes you right back to the time period though i guess. Grove is in the heart saves this stinker from a 2. Id give this a very low three # Top Tunes: Groove is in the heart / Good beat / power of love # Would I listen to it again? No
It's funky, and one track even has Bootsy
I wasn't offended! Crazy mix of humanity there.
This was enjoyable, but something about it felt a little too manufactured.
It's alright. Good beats but not much to revisit
