Reviews (page 8 of 8)
I don’t have a lot to say that is negative about this album. I also don’t really have any tracks I’d seek out to hear again. Just meh.
Not for me. Not outright terrible, just a style I dislike.
joo no iha okei mut ei mitää sellast mitä kaipaa elämäänsä
Not really my jam. Definitely wouldn't buy
Erykah Badu’s second album is similar, with its combination of rap, funk, soul, and jazz sounds by a female artist, to the lauded: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which I did not exactly enjoy. Unfortunately, I find Mama’s Gun to only be slightly more enjoyable than Lauryn Hill’s record. Highlights are Penitentiary Philosophy, with a tight chorus, great funk, more subtle vocals overall, and the mysteriously catchy Kiss Me On My Neck. A 2/5 is a good score.
This is a good vibe to listen to once but i cant see myself going to this to listen to over and over. no songs really stuck out either. but i did enjoy listening to it and her voice it very good. Misty Ray vibes.
Nice enough but extremely bland. Won't revisit.
Clearly talented and some nice little moments but far too long and it drags very quickly
It's R&B.
Akright but drags on and on

I can appreciate the coolness of the record, the vibrant funky vibes with more moody r&b/soul and smooth arrangements. Just not my thing, I feel bored and it is just too long
Hmmm, tá bom, beleza
This was okay. She has an amazing voice but the songs didn't really connect with me.
Nice morning listen. Wouldn’t revisit anytime soon tho
Ok. Really slow start to a lot of tracks. Not bad but not special. Found myself skipping around a lot in the second half. 2.5
Pretty smooth and chilled. Not really sure about adding it into this list but whatever
3 meh soul
Meh
I didn’t finish it. While likely a good album, it really didn’t appeal to me.
It was quite nice but not really energetic enough for me. I didn't finish it.
alright background music.
Not my style of music.
meh
Not our jam
I can't tell if she's not moving her jaw or her lips or her tongue or what, but Badu has a lazy way of singing that is a huge turn-off. I realized partway through that I'd much rather be listening to the instrumentals, which is usually a bad sign. Best track: Bag Lady
2000. Key Songs: Didn't Cha Know, ...& On
i understand the aesthetics but not my cup of tea
This is a good album, just too r’n’b for my tastes. It’s a 2.5!
True it is long but, at least, the songs are very boring
So so very long, and, so so very dull. Really can't think why this album is here. Best thing I can think of is the cover which looked to me like a cool Soul Jazz complication and which would have been much much more enjoyable. 1 star only.
She sounds about 90
Mama's Gun is a long slow burn that is off target. Funky, soulful R&B that runs deep but I don't really like Badu's singing and the lyrics aren't as poignant as critics claim. "My eyes are green cause I eat a lot of vegetables" is pretty lame. Erykah is well known but I had never listened to any of her work. I'm glad the list gave me that chance and I can now say I'm not digging it. 1.2 stars for this bag lady.
Ugh no.
What an awful, grating voice. Although I figured this might scrape two stars, the length worked against it and the quality somehow managed to dip near the end, which I wouldn't have thought possible. Truly appalling, one star.
This record borrows its moves from 70s-era soul but brings precious little that's new to the proceedings. Without any innovation, the resulting album is a hollow affair that makes me want to go seek out the original sources rather than listen to the copy.
Yuck!
Annoying voice, unlistenable.
no me va este genero 1/5
I found this album....confusing. Some decent soul music, with what appear to be rap lyrics. I suspect I'm not exactly the target demographic for this album, and while I wouldn't run out of the room if it were playing there, it probably wouldn't be playing in the kinds of rooms I want to hang out in.
This was hard to get through.
Oof, I can hear this is good musically, but absolutely not my thing. I found it directionless and deathly, deadly dull.
I do not get this.
I think I would have given this album a 2-3 if it was like half an hour long. Instead it's over an hour long. There are a lot of long tracks which I tend to appreciate as it gives them to a ton of time to explore a certain sound. Instead they used that time to yap about nothing instead of exploring the sound. She has got quite a nice voice but it's like she's singing to an elderly crowd and she has to go slow so they can understand her. Extremely Boring 1
Nicht so meins dieser R&B
Dire album only fit for background music in lifts or restaurants and if it was in in a restaurant I went to it would make me eat fast and leave 🙈 …..I won’t be listening to this again an d I did hold out hope for it being a good one clearly wrong
not my cuppa tea
Rubbish
Not my genre, tried really hard to keep an open mind, but that voice…
Mega ass
Not worth your time.
I understand why R&B/Hip Hop/Soul is an influential genre, but it's just not for me.
Monotonous
Not for me. Positives: I did enjoy the first song "Penitentiary Philosophy" and the first 2 minutes of "Green Eyes". Negatives: The remaining 67 minutes of the album.
Yeah, nah.
Not really my thing. Too much Soul, Funk, RnB.
YO MAMMMAAAAAA
did not appreciate her tone or singing style - couldn't finish
That's one hour and eleven minutes I can't get back.
Every track felt like it would take one line and repeat it for the whole song
I didn’t mind this to start with but then it just kept going on and on and on and on. A couple of times I didn’t realise one song had ended and another had started as they sounded so similar.
You better call Tyrone and tell him to come get this shit.
meh. not my favorite
Yikes. Did not enjoy at all. Nasally vocals. Boring music production. Not for me.
Bori... ZzzzzZzzzzzZzzzz...
hate this kind of music. hate her voice.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. There is literally nothing here to talk about.
🥱
Just couldn't seem to get behind this one at all, I found it a real struggle to listen to for some reason.
Ughhh for my money one of the more overrated artists of the last 20 years
It was a struggle to get through this. Her voice is not the voice of a professional singer and the music sounds like it comes from a high school jazz band Best Song: N/A Rating: 2.0/10 1 Star
Kinda boring for my ears.
It’s a voice I do not like. Very slow and bluesy which would sound great in a cafe or bar.
Utter toss.
Every song sounds the same. Not really vibing with this.
No.... I fucking hate R&B. It just makes my skin crawl... This is in the same realm as Solange or D'Angelo. Erykah's voice is so nasally and horrible. Nothing about this album was enjoyable. It was horrid... Favourite songs: Booty Least favourite songs: Kiss Me On My Neck, Orange Moon... And the rest of this album.... 1/5...... Yuck
First the lenght. Just because you can fit 72 minutes on a cd doesn't mean you should. Secondly there is something very irritating about her voice. Only lasted 4 tracks and then I couldn't take the assault on my ears anymore.
this record is way too long and inane and i just plain hate the sound of badu's voice to be honest. the album goes nowhere and i found myself hitting the skip button on a lot of it
Digging the music, much more than the vocals. She has something to say, for sure, but I don't love her voice. Sounds a little bit like a cartoon character. It's really just the tone, I like her vocal flow. Definitely got bored of this album long before it got done. Booty was a particular low point, but Kiss Me On My Neck wasn't a whole lot better. Time was a wasting, while I was listening to Time is Wasting. I hate the fake record pops throughout Green Eyes. I was glad when this album was over. I'll likely never listen to any of it again.
not for me not keen on vocals, too slow and lazy, doesn't appeal to me
Nope. Nope. Nope. Just nope.
I would have once took one look at this album and artist and instantly disregarded it. I am nowerdays a bit more receptive to all types of music regardless of genre (well perhaps not rap or hip hop) so look forward to listening to this. Unfortunately I found nothing on it to attract my attention. It was just plain old R&B I’ve heard thousands of times before. Found ‘Erykah’s’ (Yes it is Erica - why change a perfectly good name to something perceived more cool?) voice a bit too screechy for my taste also. 1/5 9/6/24
Esperava bem mais, mais ritmo e sedução.
Couple of decent songs but this whole genre isnt my thing. I imagine those who like RnB would love this though. Quite enjoyed the first track, and …&on, but the rest just blended into one. Pretty boring really, found myself skipping most of the tracks 3/4 of the way through. Perhaps that isn’t a fair way to judge but I just wanted to move on
This almost seems like it was designed to be background music, which isn't a good goal. All the songs blended into each other, even if you are making a laid back album there are ways you can keep things interesting but this album doesn't have any of them. Can't remember how long it actually was but it felt like three hours.
Nearly nothing to add here - just dismal and repetitive. Sounds like she put in barely any effort.
RnB and soul aren't my thing but thought this started ok.... As it went on I got bored though, it's too long and too much of the same thing, which just happens to be not my thing.... 1.5
No. Not my thing. I was glad I had the distraction of working while listening to this or I might not have finished listening to it. It was a recipe to cure insomnia. Sorry Silly name lady but you were shite! A generous 1.
some kid started singing r&b with her friends outside my house at 4am once and you know, she did have a beautiful voice but SHUT THE FUCK UP NOW
Nah.
21 savage car rap driving fast, stuff everyone’s listening to and tic tok songs just stuff to go hard on the speakers
Meh, not for me 2/10
ez 5 for nirvana
A difficult listen. Not interested I’m sorry to say. Sort of thing that makes me turn off the radio.
Avoid

I didn’t like this at all
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
Not really my type of music - it does nothing for me.
mehhhhhhh
Feels like there’s some talent here, but I don’t enjoy the voice nor style.
Wasn't exactly my speed
Zeikerige liefdesliedjes die 10 uur duren, kut zeikstem
I don’t like this it drags on way too long and her voice is just your typical cringey early 2000’s pop hip hop voice. The music is very loungey which it’s nice the album keeps a cohesive tone throughout but it’s so boring (a high) 1/5.
hard pass
Fælt
Ok. Skipped a lot of songs
Not for me
I did it myself. I can't blame anyone else. I am the responsible party. I was sitting down, listening to this and rather enjoying it, but then, when the fourth song started, three words popped into my skull. Those three words absolutely torched the album, then salted the earth upon which the album stood so nothing could grow back. I gained no joy from those three words, but I can't deny that they're true. I really don't want to be mean to this album, and I apologise for any upset I cause, but if I tell you them, you'll realise I'm right and the album will be ruined. So, I'm going to give you every chance to back out. If you stop reading this and just listen to the album, you'll probably get quite a bit of pleasure from it. But when you hear those three words, there's no going back. I'm serious. You may very well be better off ignoring me and instead trying to spot the jazz and hip-hop inflections throughout the album. You may find Erykah Badu's earnestness charming in its lack of guile, and though you'd probably think the album overlong, such ambition may impress you. But with those three words, there's no doubt that you'll immediately recoil from the album and never wish to hear a note from it again. And I'm sorry. I didn't want to conjure those three words. But I did, and it's done, and I have to be honest, but you don't need to know. You can just continue in happy innocence, or you can continue reading. I'll give you some time to think. ... ... ... ... ... Here's another warning. Think about what you're doing by reading on. If you want to keep on finding sausages tasty, you don't see how they're made. ... ... ... ... ... One more chance. Next time I'll say the three words, and it'll be on your head. By going on, you accept your share of responsibility. Once again, I am sorry. ... ... ... ... ... Are you ready? ... ... ... ... ... "Jamiroquai with tits!"
The album is long at over 70 minutes. It is difficult to describe the music as it is not traditional soul, funk or R&B. The best way is to simply say it is not good. The music was not memorable. I was waiting for each song to end. The one noteworthy thing is that the mixing was done well as one song went right into the next song.
Not my cup of tea
70s soul vibes throughout. Not something I'd go out of my way to listen to normally. Its very slow and to me it drags on and I couldn't wait for it to be over.... all 71 minutes of it. Best: Cleva Worst: ...&On 1.5 Stars
They are great musicians and a spectrum of 🥁 🎹 🎸played. Should of had Expletive symbol on the cover for “Booty” song 🎧 and Bag lady
10/10 would never listen again.
Also meh
not for me
nope
Just not my thing
not for me - african reggae soul stuff... probably good at what she does but i still didn' like it none!
