Solid, still prefer any other "britpop" band

It was a very welcome surprise. Beyond the famous initial track, "Bittersweet Symphony," there are enough interesting tracks to make listening to the album a rewarding experience. The second single, "Drugs Don't Work," was my favorite song. I even made a cover on the piano. Despite its overall quality, "Urban Hymns" falls increasingly flat in the second portion of the album with songs that are remarkably similar to the previous Oasis's output years prior. Although imperfect, this is an album I might revisit often.

the party ended in 1997. first there's Oasis's Be Here Now, which was an Emperor's Clothes moment for a lot of critics of the movement. all the songs are gaudy, overloud, overblown, and so indebted to a quickly faltering liberal British optimism that it became shorthand for the failings of the genre through its ugly borrowings and inescapable peace n' loveyness. the Beatles are all well and good until someone else tries to convince you they're the Beatles by playing a 9 minute vamp about spreading the word about how everything's gonna be alright, maaaaan. functionally, Oasis would break up and turn into a sibling boxing match before the turn of the millennium. in a way, Urban Hymns sits on the opposite end of the Britfatigue scale: it's an album where the band evolved their sound to fit with the times, pushed the sound of the genre to fit their tastes, and gained international success through an insanely catchy crossover hit indebted to 60's British pop... and it also completely destroyed the band. see, you probably already know that the Verve got sued for sampling by federal tax criminal and former superstar agent to the Rolling Stones Allen Klein, forcing Richard Ashcroft and co. to give up 100% of the rights to the song due to them sampling an orchestral version of "The Last Time" without his permission. as of writing, it took until about 5 years ago for all parties involved to realize this is fucking bullshit and that millions of dollars were stolen from Ashcroft for no reason but greed. however, i have a theory: this lawsuit made these clinger-on bands realize that the greats were still alive, and if you took enough inspiration from them, they could probably sue you. it made the prospect of paying tribute to the 60's and 70's a bit of a gambit if you didn't have a superstar legal team and millions of dollars to pay them. if you're planning to play this type of music, you're basically realizing you're late to the party anyhow. so people moved onto a newer, fresher sound that was representative of a colder, more modern society -- Radiohead, Coldplay, Doves, all those post-Brit guys. the world didn't have time for free love and mellotrons in the age of digital love and terror bombing. still, even if you chopped "Bitter Sweet Symphony" off the album (a crime against music), you'd have some very decent tunes here. it goes without saying that "The Drugs Don't Work" and "Lucky Man" are timeless, but "Weeping Willow", "Sonnet", and "Come On" are all respectable deep cuts as well. maybe we could have done without seven minutes of "The Rolling People" or six minutes of "Catching the Butterfly", but for its length (about as long as Be Here Now when you take out the obligatory hidden CD track silence), it never really feels bloated. in time, i could see myself loving Urban Hymns. there's fresh ideas, tons of creativity, and new directions navigated in a sound that many considered a bit less than fresh at the time. still, money talks. the kicker is that it can never sing.

Really enjoyed this one a lot more than "A Northern Soul". I got very pleasantly lost in the musical landscape of this one. I'm not sure individual songs stand out to me much but a nice album to vibe to.

All the songs on here are gorgeous. The production is noticeably original and experimental in a good way. Not sure why they’d put “Bitter Sweet Symphony” at the start and not the end. I suppose it’s better than just slapping it somewhere in the middle. Why couldn’t they make any other songs with melodies as popular as that one? Because they didn’t make that melody. So take that song out and the rest are forgettable, but still quality. Would they really be remembered if they hadn’t had the one song that was mostly written by someone in the sixties. I don’t believe so. They are still good. Their lyrics are good enough. The length isn’t justified though. Great album. 4/5

I enjoyed listening to this album. I'll give it four stars.

So very late 90s...

Great mix and good vibes. Most songs sound like they’d be played in the background of a 2004 drama tv show season ended as the main character drives down route 1 in California with the top down right after breaking up with their partner. Bittersweet symphony and Weeping Willow were solid stand outs.

The most popular song on this album is probably my least favorite. It more people would have listened to the ret of the record I think it would have been much bigger.

This album gets super high praise but it’s never been one I come back to much. I love all the singles. Maybe this time it’ll be different This time It really grew on me. It is a little Long in spots but this is a good album. 3.5/5 (could be a light 4)

This album is so great. It's like if Radiohead and Air and Oasis all had like 10 really sexy babies and then they all made music together. Such awesome melodies and tunes and sounds and whatever. I really love this. Great stuff.

Totally fuckd this one and didnt listen to it yesterday but i dug out my cd today and looked at the music video for bittersweet symphony and learned that everyone in this band hates eachother now. Pretty good album i like it. neo-psychedelic influences are interesting and lend a lot to the albums composition. beats fucking oasis.

Cool 90's rock. 4/5

good tracks: Sonnet The Rolling People: great beat Catching The Butterfly: sounds like Radiohead?

Ah. wow. Decades. I want to pull out my old CDs and listen to more wonderful albums of our youth... The album - Definitely floods of nostalgia, imagery, ah the 90s. This album seemed to articulate so well the unspoken and intangible uneasiness , insouciance or malaise of a generation of youth. So , we did hear it too much. I certainly like it again now. It must be here as it was undeniably iconic and hugely popular - of a time and style. The wikipedia page has a huge amount of analysis, so there is a lot of meaning and significance in the compositions and content I remain unaware of and don't have time for right now. [p.s. tech #glitch gripe; despite this album having 10,000,000 certified sales its not available on YouTube Music premium. Very odd. and it throws the same incorrect playback error its been shooting out for a decade. I don't want to go to Amazon, i cant go to Apple can I, but maybe Tidal....or Spotty does good algo..]

I remembered this being very front-heavy and very very long - and it kind of is both of those things. But it’s also very good Combining britpop with more of a U2-style sound but also some more psychedelic and shoegazey instrumentals, the soundscapes are lovely and obscure the fact that most of these songs are over the 5 minute mark - the whole album is about 1hr 15 but really doesn't feel that long, even if it does start to drag a little bit after Lucky Man Bittersweet Symphony is an all-time great opener, Sonnet is a beautiful counterpart to it, The Drugs Don’t Work is a stunning ballad, and Catching the Butterfly is fun and trippy - there’s a lot going on here and it all just works together very well

I enjoyed it. Sounded exactly as I expected it to based on the two songs I already knew. Listening to a hidden track on a streaming service feels weird.

Good album. Way better than I remembered.

britpop ändå va. lite långt men väldigt trevligt.

Really fun brit rock

Muy buenas las dos primeras canciones. Un disco con buen sonido

When i saw this I groaned, but it was quite enjoyable if a bit long.

I'm ashamed to say that I always seemed to think of this as sitting in the shadow of Pulp which isn't fair, this is a cracking album

Highly enjoyable indie.

Of course the opening track is a classic, but when the second track kicks in, you know you're in for a real treat! Enjoyed this album much much more than The Verve's previous album.

Så många klassiska kompositioner

Pretty good album but nothing special

O.K. some songs on this album might be a bit too long but with the anthems "Bittersweet Symphony" and "The Drugs Don´t Work" and other great songs like "Sonnet" and "Lucky Man" there would be enough potential for a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐album with about 45 minutes playing time. Unfortunately there is also a forgettable rest that makes it in total 76 minutes. 😞 3,5

Bitter Sweet Symphony is the all time classic, but i was presently surprised by the rest of the album. After the first track, the album took us into the early 90s and 70s way back machine. This is definitely worthy of the 1001 list and gets a 4

I was fully prepared to give this album a three-star and move on with my life, but I listened to it again with headphones on and the volume up and I have to give credit where credit is due— this album is actually pretty good. It's very 90s-alternative-but-what-is-it-the-alternative-to type of music. Mainstream and accessible, sure, but I don't necessarily think that means it's boring and middlebrow. And tbh, it takes a bit of adroitness to pull off a towering, anthemic song like "Bitter Sweet Symphony." Not many bands can do that.

For decades I haven’t remembered which songs were Verve, Pulp or Blur, or ever listened to albums by any of them, in spite of which this entire album felt familiar. Giving it a 4 in hopes of remembering which one I like (apart from Common People by one of the others, which is great).

I love discovering where certain sounds originate from. Without this generator, I’d have never known the intro to Bitter Sweet Symphany

Gorgeous tbh

Very good. Lush and unique soundscapes.

Unfinished symphony is amazing and leaves the rest of this album in the dust, however the rest of the album is nice to listen to. I would definitely come back for some songs

A pretty middle of the road Britpop album (which I like). Bittersweet symphony was the only song really trying to do anything different and the slower songs kinda suck but still very good. 🚗

A classic Brit pop album.

Down to earth rock album

this one had bittersweet symo[phony on it

First half is awesome. Gets less great as it goes on. Too long but really enjoyable.

Cracking!

I liked it so much when it came out and still like it - shame the lead singer 'wrecked' it by going solo

This has aged far better than expected. A few less inspired moments but overall this is a far more solid record that i remember. It really seems to predict the transition to what comes next in the British music scene - for better or worse. Guitar histrionics are tamped doesn't but the much production is excellent and sounds great to my ears all these years later. i came in thinking 3 but going to give this a 4...

4.5. Almost perfect. The Drugs Don’t Work is in my top 10 mellow mood songs. Lucky Man is great too The singer is weird looking.

I was surprised at how well this album held up over the years. I listened to it twice over the weekend and enjoyed it each time.

Liked the orchestral rock feel

They sound like they're trying to do the same stuff Oasis did, with a little added flair psychedelic rock. However, some definite bangers on this record. Bitter Sweet Symphony is iconic and I loved the songwriting and instrumentals in Sonnet, The Rolling People, and Catching the Butterfly. Where they excel is in the psychedelic sound they add to these indie tracks.

I expected to be less into this than I was back in the day, but I enjoyed it a fair bit; there are some good tracks on here.

Mega-Hit: Bittersweet Symphony Sonst spannend zu hören 4/5

Awesome album and still holds up!

Nice 90britpop

The whole Britpop malarkey mostly passed me by, but I did buy this album on release. The standout tracks are really the various singles - particularly Bittersweet Symphony and The Drugs Don't Work. I think that the album is overlong with some of the tracks dragging a little. But that being said, this is a sterling album.

https://youtu.be/68KWlxzZS_I?si=judZAAQO-yOjExe8

I can imagine being in the mood, just not today

I'd listened to Bittersweet Symphony many times. Relaxed listening style of album.

First song, Bittersweet Symphony, sets off the tone and the album moves on from there. Definitely starts at the peak, but I think the rest held up fairly well. I was pleasantly surprised and think this is an album I want to add to my collection. They aren't the one hit wonder I had thought they were. Go Verve.

I’ve only ever heard the big song the Rolling Stones sued them over. This will be a fascinating listen. Sad to learn they hit it big… And then very quickly started fighting and broke up. Love the big single, but do not do not do not like the vocal. It’s whiny and ear splitting. Track two “Sonnet”. Wow. Everything about this is beautiful. I hope the rest of the album is more like this. “The Rolling People”. You honestly expect me to believe this isn’t an Oasis song?! “The Drugs Don’t Work”. Everything about this is perfectly beautifully heartbreaking. The songwriting and the production are exactly what the song needs. Wow. “Weeping Willow”. Immediately conjured Oasis “Cast No Shadow”. I have read that these guys started as a shoegaze band, and there were hints of that as the album progressed! Tracks that were much more mood focused than song focused and that definitely felt like the guitarist going “oooo what does this button do…” Especially the final track “Come On/Deep Freeze”. The album could have stood to be cut by a few songs. They’re all fine, but a little tighter of a track list would have been a stronger sequence and stopped me from feeling tired by the end. All in all a very good album and I’m sad the band didn’t last long afterwards!

Some great iconic music, i like it!

Bitter Sweet Symphony is an all timer, 11/10 kind of song for me. I knew that already. But somehow, had never listened to the full album. Quite enjoyed it. I loved it while I was listening to it, but looking back a day or two later, it's not as memorable as I had hoped. But still really enjoyed it and will listen again.

So much more to this than bittersweet symphony. Loved it!

Fantastic record. One of my favorites. What can I say?

Not that I thought it would be bad, but I did enjoy this a lot more than I expected to. Very consistent. 3.5/5

Day198 - better than i thought it would be. more like oasis less like blur. weird strategy to start with the biggest song but there are at least three other songs worth hearing

It was really good, the lay song, hidden track, is unnecessarily long? But the rest of the songs are really good, melancholic, sad and with that Cobain raspy voice. Mostly slow tempo, but very enjoyable. Sad boy music mostly. 8.3/10

With "Bittersweet Symphony" leading off this album I found it hard to believe the rest of the album could come close. It was a welcome surprise how good the rest of the album is. A bit melancholy and moody at times but still melodic and with a variety of sounds and rythyms. Other good songs include..."Space and Time" and "Weeping Willow". Video for "Bittersweet Symphony' is still one of the best!

A stone cold 90s classic. Gets lumped in with Britpop but is definitely part of that post-Britpop maturing movement. You couldn’t go anywhere circa 1998 without hearing Bittersweet Symphony or The Drugs Don’t Work. Lucky Man and Velvet Morning were my favourites though. I think it’s a little on the long side and has some middling tracks in amongst the great ones. It’s still brilliant overall and has held up well 25 years on.

much better than i was expecting and some of the best britpop ive ever heard. that doesnt mean much though. 7/10

A bit long but some nice songs

4.5 fuckin amazing made me stare at the ceiling and shit

Some bitter-sweet britpop. Second listen needed.

An enjoyable listen, with the one classic everyone has heard. It's the quintessential 90s song for me. The album is also lifted by the other songs being nice.

Better than I expected.

pretty good. had bittersweet symphony which is great.

This was a Bitter Sweet Symphony. This Is Music.

Pretty good, a little depressing

Definitely know what decade this album came out in. It's a good album. Not great, although some songs are. Overall an enjoyable listen with compelling lyrics and a few songs I could see myself coming back to. Also appreciate the hidden tracks(s), which added to the album.

This was massive when I was young love the album. Stand out tracks: - Bitter sweet symphoy - Sonnet - The rolling people - The drugs don't work - Space and time - Weeping willow - Lucky man - This time

Other songs are also decent on this album

It was interesting to hear more than just the one song everyone knows. Reminded me of my high school years.

There are some masterpieces on Urban Hymns. Ashcroft’s voice is perfectly suited to The Verve’s instrumentation and songs. Great stuff, yeah I really enjoy this album.

I'm not really a fan of most Britpop, but this album was much better than I expected. Three things keep it from being a five: 1) Whiny Britpop vocals. 2) After a while it gets repetitive. It's a pretty long album - if they dropped 4 - 5 songs it probably would be nearly perfect. 3) Hidden tracks are seriously annoying. Glad this doesn't seem to be a thing anymore in the streaming era. Favorite tracks: Bitter Sweet Symphony (what a rollercoaster story about songwriting credits and royalties), The Rolling People, Sonnet, The Drugs Don't Work, Catching the Butterfly, Weeping Willow.

I love the orchestration on this album -- Bittersweet Symphony is a classic of the '90s. Overall I think this holds up very well. Has much more depth than most Brit-pop could produce.

Sounds like a mix of Oasis, Ryan Adams, and U2! This was very good and surpassed my expectations given their one hit wonder status in the US. “Weeping Willow” was a favorite. However after hearing this I see no reason why the other Verve album we already heard needed to be on the list.

Bittersweet symphony 8/10 Sonnet 7/10 The rolling people 5/10 The drugs don’t work 9/10 Catching the butterfly 6/10 Neon wilderness 4/10 Space and time 9/10 Weeping willow 6/10 Lucky man 8.5/10 One day 5/10 This time 6/10 Velvet morning 4/10 Come on/deep freeze 6/10

bucket hat is securely ON

A lack of consensus here but Goof has capitulated and this one is getting 4 stars. There are great songs: Bittersweet Symphony is obvious, but also Lucky Man and Catching the Butterfly. A early Brit-pop/psychedelic feel to the whole thing.

I find The Verve, in regard to Brit-pop, to be so so much better than Oasis or Blur. Not anywhere near Pulp though. This album starts off with a bang with the instant classic "Bittersweet Symphony". There are plently of other great tracks strewn about too, like "The Drugs Don't Work". This album is a bit too long though, around the 40 minute range would have made it perfect

Being at the midpoint between The Stone Roses and Oasis was a very good place to be in the 90s, as it turns out.

I liked this much more than I thought I would, that's a good collection of songs.

Wowoow skitbra album, alla låtar var bra asså men det peakade i början Bästa låtar: Bitter sweet symphony, The drugs dont work

Great album

Pretty good stuff, can see why they were touted as a big band coming up.

Thought this was a one hit wonder but, as an Oasis fan, I really enjoyed the rest of the album

Britpop at its finest

Incredibly strong album. It’s positively drenched in the smell of hash oil and whiskey. They made something really great here and it’s a pleasure to keep pressing play again and again.

Better than expected.

Pretty darn good, feel like we listened to it before? 4 stars.

Like most, I suspect, the success of Bittersweet Symphony and its subsequent controversy sucked all the energy out of the rest of the album which is a detailed, complete vision. The orchestral depth, the singular vocal, the point of view. Remarkable artistry. I wonder where they might have gone if they hadn’t been drowned in the bath by those they adored.

Listened to this while playing Twiling Inscription solo. I lost. I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. For some reason I was expecting it to kind of all sound like Bittersweet Symphony, but it was a really strong collection of songs. Some of the lyrics were a little cringe, but I can forgive it given the era.

Reminds me of 70's Stones with better harmonies

Kinda reminds me of radiohead?

Some cracking iconic tunes.

Tasalaatuinen ja viihdyttävä levy parilla megahitillä höystettynä taipuu neloseen.

Bittersweet Symphony is an instant classic I will crank 100% of the time it comes on the radio and I have no idea what they are singing about. 100 point demerit to Rolling Stones for being jerks about copyright. Never heard rest of album before and it was good, but not sure it's interesting enough for me to remember to seek it out again. We'll see!

Torn on this because I really love the first two songs and the rest of the album seems like a pale imitation. I'm giving it a 4 for those two songs (Bittersweet Symphony and Sonnet). Really wish Velvet Morning has been a remake of Some Velvet Morning....

Bittersweet symphony is a very very good song, and I thought the rest of the album was pretty interesting. Definitely a 4.5 at least but not quite a 5 I think

A 90's favorite. At the time, I didn't realize I was an Emo fan...Bittersweet Symphony is unique and captures their oeuvre nicely, but Weeping Willow and Come On / Deep Freeze (the hidden track! makes me miss CDs) are instrumentally beautiful and poetic with less of a \"please be a hit\" vibe.

Just a lovely listen. Solid afternoon sunshine experience with a few to sing to and a few to fade out to.

The singles are great but the rest of the album tends towards droning neo psychedelica and gets a bit boring. Still, I love this album because it reminds me of a formative time in my life.

One if the greatest ways you could ever open an album. Great album. Really love the singles. Album tracks are great, especially One Day. I think I could like it more as time goes on. Very high 4

I loved this at the time but it feels too long now. Honestly could do without 15-20 minutes of this. The singles however are epic. BSS, Lucky Man and The Drugs Don’t Work are still songs I listen to regularly. This elevates it from a 3 to 4.

The last great Britpop album

Solid album.Notable songs -Sonnet,the rolling people, weeping willow, bittersweet symphony . Velvet Morning is pretty sick too.

An album I really like. The singles are fantastic, especially "The Drugs Don't Work". I think the rest of "Urban Hymns" is less impressive but not bad. With an overabundance of Britpop albums on the list, I can see why others hate it. Also, the 6 1/2 minute gap between "Come On" and the hidden track is a bit too long. This album is a nice addition to my listening portfolio. 4 stars for a solid record.

Stands up quite well

This is definitely one of the most ambitious britpop albums, and as much of an unpopular opinion as this may be, I think they kinda pulled it off. It's long, it's grand, it's epic, but it rarely feels boring or annoying. Admittedly, there were a few moments that were very repetitive, so much so to the point where I had to check to make sure my phone wasn't glitching out and just playing the same 2 seconds of the song over and over, but those moments are few and far between so hardly take away from the experience of listening to this album.

Aside from the first track, lead single on this album, I'm pretty generally unfamiliar with The Verve. I just kind of passingly know about them in the context of Spiritualized. This album was cooler and weirder than I was expecting based on how I perceived the single for so long. Totally makes sense that they are slotted in to that same era/genre. I enjoyed this a lot though it's way too long--classic CD era release.

Had forgotten about these guys. Pleasantly surprised. Good variety of tunes.

Beautiful album

I played this album out

Solid 90's music, just chill meaningful music

Cool album from the 90’s. Great sound.

Very great really enjoyed it.

british stuff

Really good album, very consistent, perfect length and some very high highs. Highlights were The Drugs Don't Work, Bittersweet Symphony, Lucky Man, Sonnet, Weeping Willow, Catching the Butterfly

"Bitter Sweet Symphony" kicks this off, and it's probably one of the best songs of the '90s, absolutely top tier song. This album is actually pretty deep though, and "The Drugs Don't Work", "Lucky Man", and "Sonnet" are all really great. I like Richard Ashcroft's voice a lot. They manage to rock pretty hard one some songs and hit on the softer songs as well. I was really close to giving this a 5, but there's just a bit too much filler here. While I liked a lot of this, it has no business being 75 minutes long. There's a few stretches that are ok, but relatively unremarkable which just breaks up the flow a bit. I also was unfamiliar with the legal issues surrounding "Bittersweet Symphony" and The Rolling Stones, but that seems to be settled now which is good. Favorite song: Bitter Sweet Symphony Other: Sonnet, The Drugs Don't Work, Catching The Butterfly, Space and Time, Lucky Man, One Day, Velvet Morning 3/25/24

- really enjoyable sound

I go up and down with this album but I think I like it although it's a bit of a slog in the end

On the strength of Bittersweet Symphony alone I could give the album a 5, but am going with a 4

Passabler Brot Pop. Sehr langes Album.

I have to admit: I didn’t know they had more songs than Bittersweet Symphony, which I always associate with the Cruel Intentions movie. This album is actually pretty which makes me guilty for never exploring it prior. Key songs for me are BSS (obviously), Catching the Butterfly, and Come On/Deep Freeze. This is one of those lesson learned albums: if you really like a song, explore more from the album.

Very classic Brit pop. Love the strings laced throughout the album.

7 / 10 La primera canción del disco es un 10. Luego se va haciendo un poco monótono.

I really enjoy this record but find it a little draggy in the back half.

Proper 90’s classic album, Richard Ashcroft song writing is just fantastic!

I don’t think you can overstate how big of a hit “Bittersweet Symphony” was. So when I was 15 (when this album dropped) I had to see what the rest of it was about. And for whatever reason, though there was much other Brit-pop that I genuinely loved, I couldn’t get into this album. Fast forward 25-odd years…I don’t know what I was thinking. This album is excellent. Yes, the opening track kicks (and I understand that in the last five years Mick Jagger and Keith Richards allowed Richard Ashcroft to receive rights to this song), but the whole album is thoughtful, introspective, and musically complex. A really great listen. Glad it was on the list.

Not really anything special, but it’s good for what it’s got. The opener, Bitter Sweet Symphony, was cool. After that however, the tracks are less memorable. This isn’t saying they’re terrible though, some are good for what they are. This was was ok.

Nett, aber jetzt nicht der Reisser

I'm very into this type of thing, even including the stupid hidden track at the end of the album. Whenever I go on an Oasis kick (which happens every few years) I'm going to do my best to include The Verve in it.

For whatever reason, this was just the right album to be playing on my speaker in the garage as I spent way too long packing skis and ski gear and poles into these Christly ski travel bags.

Peak 90s Britpop.

Bittersweet symphony Sonnet Rolling People Drugs don't work... +Lucky Man Wow sacré ouverture d'album. Voix exceptionnelle..

Thought going in this would be a five for me since I definitely had this in the rotation early 2000s. I’m going to go four because it took me two days to get through it. Obviously some absolute classics that are in my everyday playlist: Bittersweet Symphony Lucky Man (An all time fav) The Drugs don’t work Songs that didn’t disappoint: Catching the Butterfly This Time

Remarkable how different Bittersweet Symphony sounds compared to the rest of the album, which was my only touchpoint going in to this. Despite some repetitive song structures and shallow lyrics, there's enough strong guitar work and interesting musical flourishes to keep things from becoming monotonous. Favorite track: The Rolling People

I love this album. Consistently great songs. The sound represents its moment perfectly without sounding quaint or passe all these years later.

I was excited to see this pop up. A standout album from the 90’s British wave that included Oasis, Blur, The Stone Roses and others. I think it holds up pretty well. It’s great multitasking music- it doesn’t distract you but offers enough to keep you engaged. That said, I’ll always crank up Bittersweet Symphony anytime it comes on. 3.8

I thought of The Verve as a one-hit wonder, but the album is surprisingly good. It's radio-friendly alt pop, but has nice instrumentation and variation. I would have loved this back in the day. The singer is good but I would have liked a little more range and bite. In all, it's a really good album. 4.0

Really good stuff. Iconic strings

Giving the amount of British britpop (and new wave) on this list, was almost physically exhausted by merely seeing this 75 minute record show up. Of course I know the record and know I shouldn’t have been. The opening track is a myth in and of itself but by “Sonnet”, one of the greatest tracks of its genre, I was once again won over by Urban Hymns. There’s still no need for it to be this long. It’s quite ridiculous. But it’s really good.

Don't know them outside Bitter Sweet. Very 90's British sounding, but enjoyable. Relaxing guitar sounds, and some good grooves.

There was some good stuff on this album. 4.5/5

This album gets 4 stars just for having Bittersweet Symphony!

Bittersweet symphony is a goated song. Album was solid

I've never really listened to this sort of music before but really enjoyed it. I would give it a 5 but it was a bit too long and the songs started to blend together.

Soft 4

its surprising how many good songs are on this that are completely overshadowed by bitter sweet symphony

Lucky man I still don't think got enough air time. Bittersweet symphony is always a classic though. Most of the other songs were good easy listening but not outstanding like the othet two.

Ashcroft is annoying, but I enjoyed this and it brought back some high school feels.

That was really good Britpop album, the only con is that it very long, like VERY LONG. Honestly i know about "Bitter Sweet Symphony" and i think that it would be only one good song, but liked many of song on album. I think i liked all songs produced by Youth and disliked all song produced by Chris Potter. I would give "Urban Hymns" solid 4/5, really enjoyed this one. Favourite song(s): "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "Sonnet", "The Rolling People", "The Drugs Don't Work", "Lucky Man", "One Day".

Good album. Not sure I’ll listen to it all that much, but I gave it two spins, and it was cool music to drive to.

It's kinda always the same song, but the feeling this albums conveys is quite unique

This was very nearly a 5 - I'm not a fan of britpop whatsoever, but The Verve do everything so much better than the usual suspects in that genre. At times I thought the album had ended and an Oasis album had started playing, but then I'd tune into some of the more subtle sounds that were happening behind the main instrumentation and realise that it hadn't, and that Urban Hymns is simply '...Morning Glory' with far superior production, songwriting and (in my opinion) ambition.

It's a good album overall. There's some really well crafted indie pop songs, and some particular standouts (basically the singles!). The longer form, meandering songs I'm not as big a fan of. 3.5 rounded up.

Lots of really good songs and I can't find much to fault but it akso doesn't really grab me

the opening track is a quintessential 90s anthem. have vivid memories of having my mom drive me to gymnastics practice with the track playing on the radio. the rest of the album holds up. also, hidden track?! yesssss please.

We squeek a four here, pushed into it by a few really great tracks rather than sum of the whole

Contains more hits than just Bittersweet Symphony

Mi mp3 favorito tenia todo este album

Starts with one of my all time favorite songs...especially on Seahawks game day (they play this at player intros) Quite a good album

Overshadowed by Bittersweet Symphany, a song I can't stand. The album is surprisingly good.

Hate to say it but Bittersweet Symphony carries this record HARD. That song is absolutely fantastic and one of my favorites of all time. Can't say the same thing about the rest of the album tho. Kind of generic but still a good listening experience. Only song I will be going back to is BSS

Man this thing had a lot of potential to be a great chillcore album. It had so much material, and is still melodically very well made. Something about is just a little too plastic for me. I do think I enjoyed it JUST enough to push it to a 4. This thing is probably like a 3.9

Album Nr. 17 Gutes Alternate-Rock-Album.

I didn't give this a listen first time around because I was so tired of the overplay of Bitter Sweet Symphony, and the last thing I wanted was more Verve. I really enjoyed the rest of the album, and to be fair, even coming back to the big hit was fun. "The Drugs Don't Work" was a particular standout and I look forward to listening to this again. The "Deluxe" edition was disappointing. Give me a live version, or remixed singles, but leave the tracks as they were.

1997er Nicht nur Britpop-Balladen. Nett anzuhören.

Urban Hymns is a bold and grand album, showcasing sublime string arrangements that are sensibly placed throughout, adding an anthemic grandeur to the overall sound. This marks an interesting third act for the band, especially considering their shoegaze debut and ballad-heavy second album. While Bitter Sweet Symphony may not be my favourite track, its arrangement is undeniably fabulous. The short burst of the band's tenure at this point is phenomenal, and their reunion has been maximised to create a space in time. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 6 STAND OUT TRACK - Catching the Butterfly

Four unbelievable tracks. Some of the best British rock ever. The rest meh.

This was my favorite so far… all the songs were different enough to distinguish for a first time listener

Very good

sieltä heti ekana sziget biisi :P, hyvä albumi tbh

I think everyone in the world is familiar with that first track. Great way to open the album, and probably the most memorable track on the record. All the other songs are solid too, in my opinion. A very consistent record. I’ll have to listen again sometime.

Didn't know this was the group that did Bitter Sweet Symphony. Rest of the album was pretty solid.

finalmente os albuns tao melhorando

3.75/5 enjoyed it

I liked this but I would have to listen to it again with headphones on to get the full effect.

Brit pop at its pomp. Full of attitude. Good times too.

Sehr geil! Rating: 3,75/5

It was pretty good.

awesome memories with this one

4.5/5 - not perfect but really good and I love this album

Good album

Fete vibes

Þá skemmir ekki fyrir að Ashcroft er auðvitað gallharður stuðningsmaður Manchester United, enda fæddur í Wigan nálægt Manchester, en Wigan er auðvitað Rugby borg. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/De8JnPbWkAAnF5T.jpg Bitter Sweet Symphony er náttúrulega top 50 lag of the 90's og gjörsamlega sturluð útfærsla á Rolling Stones laginu The Last Time (í útgáfu Andrew Oldham Orchestra frá 65'). Leiðindamál hjá plötufélögunum. Virðist vera að Jagger og Richards hafi ekkert haft með það að gera. Sonnet greip mig mest í þessarri yfirferð en The Drugs Don't Work og Lucky Man eru auðvitað frábær lög líka. Filler lögin minntu mig á svona soft Stone Roses dæmi sem ég get hlustað á erry day. Top 10 britpop plata.

Bitter sweet symphony og The drugs don´t work eru algjör næntís klassík. Við það bætast svo Sonnet og Lucky man. Neon wilderness, Catching the wilderness og lokalagið Come on. Hefði verið gaman að sjá hvaða leið þeir hefðu farið ef þeir hefðu haldið áfram, en kannski hættu þeir bara á toppnum. Ef ég ætti að gagnrýna eitthvað þá er aðeins of mikill Oasis keimur af sumum lögunum. 4,,4.

Great Album

I was in my early twenties when this came out. Bittersweet Symphony was everywhere, and the follow up singles were on heavy rotation also, but I had never listened to the album so was looking forward to this. To open up with the best known, and best, track on the album followed by another big single made me happy ... but then you start to hit the album tracks. And it doesn't start off too pretty. The Rolling People is, frankly, shit, and while they do improve they still aren't great. Ho-hum, three stars it is. And then you get One Day. My god, that is a jaw dropping track. Outstanding musically and lyrically, and really elevated the album for me as well as making the hair on my arms stand up, which is always a great sign for me. It doesn't get it up to five, but it rescued a strong four stars.

Opened strong, great music. Rest of the album was good too

90s Britpop in a nutshell - some absolute anthems surrounded by too much self-indulgent wank

May be if I have been listening to good music last week I will give it 3, but compared to all the mediocre albums that are in this list it sounds great.

Bought this back in the day but hadn’t listened in a long time

The consolidation of The Verve as one of the strongest british bands. After their previous interesting, but maybe too dark albums, they make a step forward to a more alternative rock oriented audience. Full of major hits and strong attitude it is certainly an iconic album of the 90s

This record benefited from multiple listens. With a single spin it would forgivable to presume that the band is an discount store Oasis knockoff, especially if you tried to pick between Liam Gallagher and Richard Ashcroft in a police lineup. This is where multiple listens helps. First, ignore Bittersweet Symphony because, if you are my age, you have already heard it a billion times. Giving the songs room to ruminate eventually reveals enough uniqueness to see their value in the oeuvre of modern music.

Pretty solid

First song is the banger, dindt know it was this musician

Verve betekent blijkbaar 'sappigheid'. Ik vind dat mooi.

Very chill vibes on this album. A lot of the songs blend together though. Maybe too chill. Bittersweet Symphony almost doesn't even fit but maybe because I've heard it so many times in comparison to everything else on this record. It's a great song though so it's not like it detracts from the album. They sound like something between Radiohead and Oasis. But I guess that's just the 95-2000 brit rock/pop sound. I'm enjoying the listen but I had to turn it up. There's a lot more interesting stuff in the quiet sounds.

Good album, all song are solid plus the hits

4/5 no chb idziemy w dobrym kierunku

Massive. Quality from start to end yet still underrated as a band.

An album I looked forward to listening to. Wasn't disappointed. Skirted enough around britpop to keep it fresh enough.

Reminds me of childhood

This album's pretty alright. It's definitely not bad, in my opinion. I'd call it good even. The album started off very strongly with the band's most famous song by far "Bitter Sweet Symphony". And yeah, that song's an absolute classic. The other songs aren't bad though. Some of them drag a bit, like the back-to-back "Catching the Butterfly" and "Neon Wilderness", but most of the others are good. The singing is somewhat hit or miss, but when it's good, it's good. It's almost a concept album of sorts, all about life. I think it works well. I like the inclusion of a secret instrumental at the end, but why is the break in between so long? Overall, I think "good" is kind of how I feel about this album as a whole. I don't feel super strongly about it either way. It's just a decent album. light 4/5.

Good and rocky

Never have sought out The Verve outside of Bitter Sweet Symphony, I was surprised by how Radiohead-influenced about half the tracks were. I found those more engaging than the more ballady-type tracks, but all in all it was an enjoyable new listen

1997. The year Josh and I got together. Paris. Bitter Sweet Symphony.

Heel nice!

The 90s is when garage bands began to try harder. Despite the controversy and copyright issues regarding the famous 1st track, the album itself has many other great tracks.

Better but still not exactly my style

Bittersweet Symphony is always a bop, but the rest of the album I was quite surprised. Kinda taking a page out of the Oasis book but also gave me some Radiohead vibes even though OK Comp released the same year as this album. If I ever feel like vibing I might go to this.

Fav songs: Bittersweet Symphony, Drugs Don’t Work

Proper music - written with the melody and music first, not just a computer beat with samples on a doggerel lyric. So although it's not all perfect, at least it starts from the right place - and some of it most certainly is perfect. Let's have more of this, please.

Pretty pretty pretty good

Bittersweet symphony is already a favourite of mine. I also enjoyed Sonnet and the rest of the album.

The Brit pop albums on this list have been hit or miss for me, but I enjoyed this one. As an album, it's a bit too long, but there are some great catchy 90s punk pop hits on here! A lot of songs that were familiar from my FM radio listening days, but I didn't realize they were all on one album. This is one I really could've gotten into back in 1997, but I never did. At any rate, a happy surprise. 4/5

1997 was when I first started listen to music properly so this was right in the sweet spot, I’ll probably rate it higher than it’s worth but that’s nostalgia for you. Also it was way longer than I thought it was gonna be.

Very 90s Brit Rock. Bitter Sweet Symphony is definitely the best song on the album. The rest is good, but not memorable. 4/5

Wigan's finest. And possibly Wigan's only. My heart sank a little when I had this, maybe because of having to hear the intro to Bittersweet Symphony during every single terrible England game for 20 years, but actually it's very good. The singles are great, and album tracks like Catching The Butterfly catch you off guard a bit. All in all, very enjoyable, and took me right back to buying it on tape aged 13 and wearing a fisherman's hat.

Highlights: Bittersweet Symphony, Sonnet, The Drugs Don't Work, Catching the Butterfly, Neon Wilderness, Rolling People, Come On if it wasn't packaged with the extended silence/hidden track. JUST SPLIT IT FFS!

Really great overall sound and flow to the album.

heard did but didn't know it. Liked it but didn't love it

Three absolute classics on this.

I never actually listened to the full album when it came out because I really didn't care for "Bitter Sweet Symphony" at the time. I still don't, really, but there are some really good songs on here. "The Drugs Don't Work" and "The Rolling People" were probably my favorites, but most everything was solid. I totally understand why this album made the list.

Groovy, I’ve been listening to bittersweet symphony for a while, and though it starts a bit from the rest of the album, overall I liked the pace and feel.

Nice chill album, really enjoyed the lyrics. It’s definitely a laid back album, so not one I’d probably put in a running rotation, but a joy to listen to.

Better than I thought. More than a one- (or two-) hit wonder.

Pretty enjoyable as a whole.

Pretty good jams. First track will be stuck in my head for 3 weeks but that's okay

The verve did successfully what Oasis were attempting to do with “Be here now”. A few songs in the first half drag a little longer than they need to but the record is a britpop classic that I won’t soon get tired of no matter how overplayed Bittersweet Symphony is.

The only song I ever knew of theirs was bittersweet symphony before listening to this. I was not expecting the rest of the album to have songs as good or even better than it. Very good album that I will look forward to repeat listenings.

Oh I remember this one. Bought and returned the CD several times because it would NOT work on my CD player. It was a kinda cheap CD player, but it played all of my other CDs. Something about this CD kept it from working. The last time I returned it I ended up buying Reel Big Fish instead. Which is ironic, because they have a song about being "Trendy" and that's exactly what I was doing by getting the Reel Big Fish CD. Got rid of that one pretty soon too. Anyway, I guess my point is that this is better than Reel Big Fish. Even though it was more memorable than The Verve.

Here’s an album with numerous classic tracks, yet an album that I remember mostly for being so inoffensive: there’s just nothing to dislike here. Guess that’s why it sold so many copies.

Personal rating: 7.4/10

83 / 100 Really really liked this. “Bitter Sweet Symphony” is an obvious highlight, but it’s far from the only one as “The Drugs Don’t Work” is a close second for me. Actually the first half of this was often times close to perfect. My only real complaint is that 75 minutes is a bit too long for the project as I usually start to lose interest towards the end. But overall this was great.

Good album, but other than Bittersweet Symphony there is nothing special on it. The record sounds extremely British and in the same mold as Oasis, Blur and all of the rest bands like that. Quite pleasant listening to this album, but it won't stay with me any longer than that.

I enjoyed this album throughout its relatively long run time. Solid.

I'd heard a few of the songs on this before but never listened to the whole album. Impressed by this one and will probably listen to it again

would be a solid 5 but Bittersweet Symphony rules so hard it can’t help but make the rest slightly pale

These guys were heavily overplayed back in the day, but they don't rub me up the wrong way nearly as much as Coldplay or the like. Still, though, the presence of those too-familiar tunes means I prefer "A Northern Soul" to this one. Fave track - quite like the psychedelia of "Neon Wilderness" blending into "Space & Time"...

Some good music right here. Some would say it's classic and it wouldn't be far from the truth.

Pleased to say that this is more than just Bittersweet Symphony. It offers up a darker, more melodic side of '90s britpop and I'm here for it. Standout tracks (besides the obvious hit) are Sonnet, Lucky Man, Space and Time, and One Day.

It's pretty good so far. First song is a classic. Made it four songs in. Got tired of the style of the music.

Amidst breakups and reunions they still managed to improve on their second album and produce excellent pop songs and groove jams. Timeless soulful and groove based rock.

I was very surprised, I only knew Bittersweet Symphony going into the album, and the rest of the album was very good. Standout track for me was The Rolling People

This album is quite nice to listen to. I only knew one song but the others have the same style.

Fun album!

This is great. always only knew bittersweet symphony but it turns out they got other good songs too!

Singles are deadset smashes. The rest was more psychedelic than I’d imagined

I loved this

Bittersweet Symphony is a great song - one of the best of its era, IMO. That elevates this otherwise pleasant, but not great, album for me.

I hadn’t heard the bulk of this album so I didn’t expect much after Bitter Sweet Symphony. I was pleasantly surprised that much of the rest of the album is as good as the radio hit. Solidly a britpop album without being formulaic.

If someone tells you they don't like Bitter Sweet Symphony, you shouldn't trust that person. I'm not huge on the euro-indie-pop of the late nineties, but this song deserves all of the respect. Classic string intro with one of the catchiest god-damned choruses that makes everyone think they can sing. Sonnet is kind of a boring handover after BSS... The Rolling People picks up with a big room guitar / drum combo. The Drugs Don't Work is a comfortable little ballad. Solid little song. Catching the Butterfly is my second favorite song on here so far. Digging the spacious, noodly atmosphere of the second half. Very open and almost psychadellic with the synth tones poking around under a haze of drum and reverberated guitar. Neon Wilderness is another sparse number. Feels initially like a B-side instrumental number from Modest Mouse with some atmospheric guitar and drums with vocals floating overhead. I had this in the background for the remainder of the album, but I honestly can say that I enjoyed this album way more than I expected to. Especially closer "Come On;" that was an unexpected jam. All around this is a 4/5 for me. They cover a lot of ground and had way more variety to their sound than I expected going in -- ballads, pop, jam / psych influences.

Bittersweet Symphony is a great way to start this album. It is the only song I know by them and it was cool for it to be first. Catching the Butterfly and Neon Wilderness are a nice trippy twist in the middle of the album The strings that are featured in a lot of songs really lift this album up a notch The album ended pretty weak in my opinion but still a very good album all around

I completely forgot this album existed, I listened to it a lot as a kid. Bittersweet Symphony is one of my favourite songs. The rest of the album is less memorable, but still good. 4/5

I’m pretty over Bitter Sweet Symphony, but fortunately the rest of the album is great

I LOVE IT. Just great

Even if you strip away the single releases, this is an album with a lot of depth.

Slow but easy to listen to

Listened Before? N Wow, this took me by surprise. Bittersweet Symphony is by far their best known work in the US and it's all I'd heard by them. Imagine my surprise when I realized it's an outlier and sounds nothing like the rest of the album. This album is fantastic. Hooky, acid-drenched, 90s fun. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Sonnet

Didn’t know anything other than ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ but really enjoyed this album.

Ikonisk åpningslåt. God fortsettelse også, heldigvis. Nostalgisk på en måte.

A familiar album. I really like it but feel it is let down by the final track

Millions-selling depression? Sure.

Iconic Britpop album Favourite Tracks: Bitter Sweet Symphony, Sonnet, The Drugs Don't Work

i’m a sucker for these nostalgia ridden albums. bittersweet symphony is close to an all time banger lowkey

this rock ROCKED !!!

Great late 90s vibes

I wonder why The Verve never made it further.

really liked!

Perfect starter!!! And finisher! +1. But nothing special in total. But not so bad.

Pretty Good, nice 90s album, fun listen all the way through. Need a few more listens before I think off adding to collection. I like Bitter Sweet Symphony a lot so would be cool to enjoy the rest of the album as well.

first listen this album is just great

I was wondering how long it would take to get here on the list, to the first album I bought, nostalgia is hooked directly into my veins as cascading memories wash over me as I shed a single tear of blissful adoration. After all this time? Always.

Fedt album.

Classic
