Listened to parts of two cuts. Heavy metal is not for me.
Groovy, it's definitely fun to listen to a few tracks of it. 70 minutes of it is not really listenable though
Cool stuff.
Seems a bit more creative than the previous Sepultura album... some longer instrumental segments and additional percussion/native vibes mixed in. Still, it is heavy, aggressive, and the vocalist style is a bit paralyzing... maybe i'm old, but some of the parts just sound like he's killing his voice, almost wince inducing. Reasonably interesting, but definitely long.
Heavy.
Like being in a hardcore Brazilian dentist. I hope his throat clears up!
Wow!
Cool album i liked it, not much else
Not usually a metal fan but enjoyed this more than I thought
ROOOOOOOTS BLOODY ROOOOOOTS
I 100% expected to hate this record, but it was pretty f-cking good. Even though the Cookie Monster vocals can get a bit tiring, overall it works as a style. Interesting integration of different percussion in the “interlude” pieces. I’d definitely listen again, although it’s long.
This is really not my genre, but it was actually alright. Not outstanding I guess, but I had fun.
Musically this is very interesting especially the instrumental ones, but in my opinion, this album suffers by the type of the voice the singer uses (not my kind of type) and a little bit from the weakness of the lyrics . 3 only for the music and production.
I was prepared to dislike this album. I am not much of a metalhead, no disrespect to the genre, it’s just I’m one of those that begins to recoil as soon as I find out the vocals are going to be mostly nothing but growls and screams. My loss, I know. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It fits in at a unique crossroad, when industrial, grunge and thrash were basically dying and funneling their influences into nu-metal, and this is an album that bridges that transition. Apparently the guitarist used the same pedal as the guitarist on Korn’s debut album, and for better or worse (I’m in the former of the two), that is sometimes very apparent. To piggy back on that, I thought the making of this album was genuinely interesting and worth a quick Wikipedia dive. The background of the percussive elements on this album I found to be particularly interesting, just really impressive stuff all the way around, and it was the main factor for my enjoyment. One easy thing to knock against it is it’s simply too long, and it grows stale by the end. Hard for me to recommend outside of fans of the genre, but maybe it’ll work out for naysayers in the way it worked out for me.

HEAVY DUTY! Sepultura was a band I first heard about from Antonio, a church investigator I knew while serving in Cruzerio, Sao Paulo, Brazil. He wasn't into the church, he was into speaking English with Americans who had good musical tastes between Christian Pieper and myself. This band is from Brazil, and this album has a lot of traditional Brazilian drum beats, too. A little heavy for my taste, but it was the first I'd listened to of this legendary Brazilian band in years. A good listen if you're preparing to jump 30 flaming school buses on a motorcycle!
Heavy AF. Fun to listen to on occasion, but not heavy in the rotation. Music wise it is fantastic, I just can't deal with the screamo stuff!
Loving the rhythmic guitar grooves which feel unique, interesting, varied, and so very heavy. I also appreciate the album art. Unfortunately I think I've aged out of the vocal style and find it really hinders my enjoyment of the music. Best track: Ratamahatta A cool idea which mostly works and a worthy entry on this list 3.5
A relatively enjoyable nu metal album, notable for the Brazilian band's exploration of and inspiration from their native peoples. If nu metal made the list, I sure hope we see the Deftones on here!
Really creative with the inclusion of Brazilian culture in both the music and album cover. While I don't think I would go back, I'm pretty impressed by this. The music video for Ratamahatta is also really cool. Fave track(s): Attitude, Itsari
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this album at all, but I actually found it to be really fun! Highlights: Roots Bloody Roots Ratamahatta
Had some good stuff going on in there. I do love me some impressive percussion so that was a plus. Top tracks for me: Ratamahatta Breed Apart Jasco Itsári
I enjoyed this one. I've never actively listened to this band before, but might consider it now.
solid hard rock sound - pretty good. probably 3.5
Despite being a fan of rock I never really went beyond and dove into metal music. It's harder to enjoy when the lyrics are barely comprehensible and the songs cross the line between music and noise. Thankfully, what Sepultura does here is they merely toe the line between the two. Although the lyrics were mostly still gibberish to my ears, I enjoyed how the music was harsh, intense, and heavy, but never migraine-inducing. Especially the longer instrumental bits, pretty sure those would be a real treat to hear live. Standouts were Attitude, Straighthate, and Lookaway.
Roots is the sixth album by Brazilian metal Sepultura. This groove/nu metal album is also a concept album featuring Latin-like rhythms and Brazilian music textures, even including tribal chants from Amazonians. It's unique in this way because of the fusion between native Brazilian sounds and heavy metal music. I did enjoy this interesting album and I think fans of metal music will as well.
I enjoy their early work much, much more. This album is more interesting than it is good. The tribal music aspect is certainly unique. The only problem is this kind of metal, nu-metal, is generally not my thing anymore. I liked this much more when I was in middle school. It's also way too long. Cuts could've been made for sure. Born Stubborn is my favorite song here and the title track is not bad, or maybe that's just nostalgia talking. I used to sing that chorus all the time. I want to like this more than I do. Their early work is so good. I'm giving this a reluctant 3 out of respect when I think it's actually more of a 2.
first listen love the tribal stuff, the nu metal is kinda mid tho
Why do you have to be mad? Lots of riffs with words about something. A day’s commute of nü metal
If one has to listen to death metal, I think one can do a lot worse than Sepultura. This album especially. We get a lot of the tropes that I find challenging to listen to, but we also get the following: -Clear vocalizations! I can understand what they're saying! And they're mad! -Clear guitar melodies. The distortion is heavy, but not so heavy as to mask incompetent playing. These fellows know how to riff! -Unique and interesting compositions! They utilize a lot of indigenous sounds and chants from Brazil, giving this album a sound that could only have come from there! Way to go guys. I don't need to listen to this again, and it was way too long, but I'm glad I was here for it.
Lekker
Pas le meilleur album metal, des défauts par ci par là, mais clairement un album important dans la scène groove. Mérite d'avoir sa chance
Sure, there's a heck of a lot of screaming by the vocalist and it's very much in the hard metal or thrash style, so in that sense it is a little much for me, but there is also quite a bit of soul and spirit in the music and I'm surprised to say I like it.
Les chansons plus tribales sont meilleures que celles plus traditionnellement métal. Sympa, mais pas à tout casser.
I like it. Unashamedly heavy and extreme. With some added authentic ethnic touches which made it stand out. Otherwise they sound just like 000's of other bands like this. I've no idea what genre this is? nu metal, Death metal? thrash? Heavy? One other reviewer commented this was a great album until the howling began! Having said that I enjoyed listening to this.
I guess it's good, can't really say much about it. Let's just give the Album 3/5 and carry on.
I appreciate the use of traditional music styles. Particularly the extended track at the end. Vocals were too repetitive however.
OK. A bit samey. I remember some of the songs very well and the rest is a bit filler.
This album was a really nice surprise. I enjoyed the metal elements, but what really caught me was the blending of traditional Brazilian tribal and folk musics into the metal sound. I have no doubt that these inclusions contributed to my enjoyment of this album. At the time that this album came out, it was probably unlike anything Americans had ever heard and no doubt influenced metal music to move forward with more world music sounds. This is also the kind of metal where there's plenty of yelling but not TOO much yelling; you can still pick up on some of the lyrics. Dictatorshit went a big far into the "thrash" realm for me, but fortunately it was short and sweet. Canyon Jam was an incredibly bold finisher, leaning even more heavily into the tribal side of things and away from metal. It was a move that worked well, though, as it seals the album with a bit of mystery and intrigue. Simply put, this album is a killer celebration of heritage crafted inside of the realm of metal music, where the band shines best. It just works.
not as thrashy as I’d have liked because that is the metal that I prefer. I can tell that this is objectively good music but it isn’t my cup o tea
It was good, but wasn't in the mood for this type of music at the time of listening so it put me on edge
I might‘ve outgrown this type of music. Used to love it when it came out but nowadays i cannot even make it through the whole thing
Metal music with melody and instrumentation beyond the basics. Not usually my genre of choice but it was enjoyable
I get that it's significant, but christ, edit that shit.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Born stubber
A better produced album with more songwriting than noise like their earlier work. It also includes acoustic and worldly deviations which gives the album more in dynamics and structure. However, far too long of a runtime.
Pretty unique for a metal album. Some central american/other elements like a didgeridoo? chanting and lighter drums like bongos or something. Didn't end up adding any songs to my Spotify just because metal isn't really my genre of choice but a couple songs had me nodding my head.
I have heard of them before but have never heard them before. It was a pretty rocking album for my Saturday morning walk!
What a stark contrast from the other Sepultura album Arise. I haven't listened to Chaos A.D. but they dramatically slowed down their riffs, and I am now convinced nu metal is just groove metal with heavier, grungier riffs and hip hop vocals. There's a ton of Korn inspiration here, especially in "Attitude" and "Endangered Species", and in fact they were so obsessed they even got Korn to play in "Lookaway." They also incorporate Brazilian indigenous themes in the lyrics, instrumentation, and sometimes vocals as in the peculiar "Ratamahatta" or the last few tracks. It's a solid album. Production work is good. There's good mixing and nice Korn-esque effects like distortion. It's also super influential, for being one of the first albums to popularize nu metal, which of course would dominate mainstream rock for the next half decade. There's only a few highlights in the album, much like Arise. I didn't find the vast majority to be memorable. Also double album syndrome made it hardly bearable to listen to entirely. Tracks are too long, most of them going over 4 minutes. They try to spice it up near the end with more unconventional indigenous-themed tracks which does blend in well but hardly grabbed my attention. "Itsari" and "Dictatorship" are the only tracks I enjoyed after "Lookaway."
It’s still pretty good (better than I remember), but it’s still ridiculously long for a nu metal record. 3.5
Not bad, I do like me a, in this case, Brazillian twist. This one didn't grab me as much as Arise but I believe it's on the list because it's the last Max album. Anyway, fave, Canyon Jam
Eh. It's not for me but it's a very good example of what it is. It certainly didn't offend me.
I listened to Sepultura at the gym, which was a good place to listen to it. I didn't mind it, good in places (Straighthate, Spit, Born Stubborn especially) but again, when I'm listening to metal of this style I want a little more nuance and skill to it. Maybe I've been spoiled by Avatar. Anyway, 3/5.
This was a somewhat enjoyable listen for me, which is saying a lot considering my general feelings regarding metal. Vocals aside (I'm not into them and the lyrics aren't much better), the guitars were rad. Especially on the tracks that weren't as...heavy.
The music was tight. Impressive drums, instrumentals and tribal percussions. Pretty strong vocals with mostly intelligible lyrics. Interludes/extro add a different pace with itsari, canyon jam.
Definitely a stand out for the genre and I enjoyed it. Very long though.
Never given this band a proper listen before, and dismissed them at noise. Glad it has appeared on my list and I’ve given them a proper bit of attention. Impressive control, tempo and rhythms, and clever use of dynamics and multiple percussion instruments to keep things interesting. I still don’t quite get the vocal style but the musicality is great and I really enjoyed trying this from start to finish. Top tracks: Ratamahatta, Breed Apart
I really liked some of the songs, but this album is just too long. I can only take so much screaming at once. That being said, the music is top notch. I really like the musicians and the Brazilian roots really shine. Truly fantastics musicality. 2.5/5 but rounding up to 3/5 for great music. The screaming just is too much.
This sounds like the granddaddy of metal but very current. I'm impressed, though it's not my typical listen.
Musikgenren er ikke ligefrem. Dog kan jeg godt høre kvaliteten i den. Generelt er stemmen ret irriterende og musikken for hurtigt. 3 stjerner
Intense, relentless, piercing sound. Brutal, guttural-to-screaming vocals. Cathartic, angry lyrics. I enjoyed the use of Latin and indigenous musics, which pushes this creatively to a level beyond what I expected, particularly on the back half of the album. The closed it out nicely with "Canyon Jam." Overall hard on the ears, and not really my genre of choice, but this is a well made album. Glad I gave it a chance. Fave Songs: Breed Apart, Ratamahatta, Jasco, Itsari
I like the musicality of the band, but I have never been a fan of death growl vocals. So it was really difficult for me to get past that.
I'm not into the nu metal genre and this is the first time I've listened to Sepultura. This album was pretty good at times and I especially like some of the exotic rhythms that the band used on multiple tracks. They seemed to be trying to do something different here which is always a risk because you don't know how fans are going to react. One of my criticism (apart from the growling vocals which isn't my thing) is that the band seemed to do the one thing that a lot of bands in that era did and that is fill up the entire CD. I think they would've benefited a lot by taking at least 2 tracks off and making a better overall album. Dusted and Born stubborn could easily have been bonus tracks or used on an E.P. It would have been a 4 star album but I think it's length makes me drop it down to 3.
The songs definitely have a cool metal groove. Some of it is the stuff nightmares are made of. I don't mind some growling, but this was a little much for me. Wish I could hear this with a singer who wasn't constantly screaming because the music is pretty awesome. Giving it a 3 but would have given it a 4 with less screaming.
Not usually into metal, but I thought I would try this one out because its from Brazil. Not a fan of the whole Screaming vocal style, but there are some really interesting moments here (the final track is a standout for me), which I think place it a cut above other metal albums that Ive listened to. Closer to a 3.5, but I just cant take the screaming vocals seriously.
I enjoy metal. This wasn't bad
Only listened to one song. I like it okay but it’s also pretty NuMetal and that isn’t really my thing
Liked it for the most part, would prefer less throat screaming. 3.5
Pretty good, mostly. Couple of songs I could've skipped and not missed much, but pretty good.
Pretty heavy, some tribal themes. Liked some of the songs but not others
I don't necessarily dislike Death Metal, and it's cool that they are from Brazil. Beyond that, it feels very typical heavy metal, a bit uninspired for me. Then again, I'm not a metalhead so .
actually better than I expected. Not that great though. Average.
I mean the instruments were good
1. ROOTZ - 2 2. attitude - 1 3. cut - 2 4. rata - 2 5. breed - 2 6. hate - 1 7. zpit - 2 8. look - 2 9. duzted - 2 10. born - 2 11. jazco - 1 12. itzari - 1 13. ambuzh - 1 14. zpeciez - 1 15. dictator - 2 16. jam - 0
1.5 Really unpleasant. I think I actually like the last Sepultra album (many years ago) pretty okay. But one Sepultra album probably is enough. This is a couple years later, and sees them moving away from their thrash/power metal style. You can literally HEAR the nu-metal creeping into their sound, and it’s awful! There’s also some world music influences that sound more pretentious than interesting. While well-produced, the length of this album (well over an hour) makes everything start to just mush together. There’s not enough highlights to make the album stand out, and all the songs eventually just kinda mush together into one long bit of noise. You get to the final track, thank god, then see it’s THIRTEEN MINUTES LONG, and turns out most of that thirteen minutes is just ambient sound. Really tests your patience.
i liked the groove parts but i’m giving this a 2 because i don’t think i would reach for this album in my daily life
Can't deny the talent or the insane amount of headbanging momentum contained in here. I just think the other 98% of people will insist they don't need to hear this before they die. Objectively bad choice to include here imo, this will be unlistenable to most.
I just can't stand metal vocals like this. Redeeming tracks: Ratamahatta, Jasco, Itsári, Canyon Jam More Brazilian tribal, less metal please.
Metal is still not for me. I caught moments I like but this was overshadowed by the singing and loudness
Nu metal, raging, with some Brazilian influences. Maybe I would have enjoyed this more on a different day - but on this rare, beautiful sunny day, it was a chore to listen to.
I was disappointed in this. I generally like scream style vocals in metal but these vocals seem a bit put on during some parts, like a caricature of metal scream vocals. Doesn't do it for me. The guitars are the most disappointing part, almost nothing interesting happening. They seem like pretty run of the mill, drop d chugging metal parts that I could probably play (and I don't play metal at all). Not that every moment needs to be a flashy display of technical proficiency but maybe sometimes? Or at least something interesting? The drummer is the stand out and I like the way the drums sound a lot. I guess the simpler style makes it more accessible and that's why it was such a huge seller? I use to do sound at a metal venue and I feel like most local Toronto bands I saw out play these guys.
I can understand where the hype comes from, a lot of these songs were built around some pretty solid riffs, but I really didn’t enjoy this very much. And maybe it’s cause I was a little distracted cause I was writing my friend Justen a letter, and maybe it’s because my expectations were too high because my dad loved these guys, but it just didn’t click with me. I thought a lot of the songs meandered past their natural end point, and it really stretches what is already a very long album. I think this could’ve been like an incredible 45 minute album, but instead it’s a subpar 70 minutes. I just think we’ve heard better metal before and since. Favorites: Attitude, Spit, Itsari
Ersatz rebels. Music is too polished. Great production though.
Eh. Not my type of thing
Not my genre at all, the gutteral throat shouting is just rough vocals to listen to for a hour. The traditional sounds at the end were interesting, but nowhere near enough to improve the score here.
Overall Rating - 2.16/5 (4.31/10). Mostly a bunch of dissonant screaming over OK guitar and bass playing.
I liked the instruments and concept of the album but the screaming vocals I can't get past.
Sepultura are a Brazilian metal band who decided to incorporate their indigenous roots into this album. The idea is good. The execution is mango ice cream with tomato sauce — each element fine on its own, but served together in a cone, which as my daughter would say, is so ein Quatsch. The metal sections are heavy and competent. The indigenous sections are interesting. They don't talk to each other. They just take turns. Where you might expect something genuinely hybrid — the two things bleeding into each other, like Kendrick folding jazz into hip-hop until you can't tell where one ends — here you get a metal song, then an indigenous interlude, then a metal song. The seams show. 2/5 — good ingredients, wrong recipe.
Generic rock.
I enjoyed quite a lot of the music but the “singing” is just silly. A bit of shouting at times can be fine but it was just annoying and ruined a lot of the songs.
I can appreciate heavy music now and then but didn’t enjoy this
This is some heavy shit. Like REALLY heavy shit. It’s aggressive, in your face and an absolute assault on the ears. The musicianship is actually really good & interesting - the riffs and drumming are amazing in places, but it’s the vocals that are just too much for me. I’ve never been a huge metal head, especially screamo - to me the screaming ruins the music. It’s not necessarily a criticism as I know that some people would love this, but it’s just not my cup of tea so I can’t rate this more than a 5/10.
Thrash metal has got to be one of the most frustrating genres of music to listen to, along with jazz and country. You have a lot of talent in the room, but they insist on using it for evil. There are generally outstanding drummers and some fantastic guitar work, but everything has to be turned up to 11, sped up to comical proportions just because, and then, even when you find there's a decent groove going on, the idiot with the mic opens his throat and yells over the top of it like a howler monkey with emphysema. It's almost like they think lyrics are so cringe they have to ruin them just in case anyone goes 'aww those were nice words'. I'd probably award this 4 stars if it ended around the 40 minute mark and didn't have vocals. But it doesn't and it does. So I didn't.
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. This is some pretty intense metal. The instrumentation is pretty good, but I really do not care for the harsh vocals. The vocals are such a put off for me that I could not get through the album. I will not come back to this one.
Seems like they are good at what they do. But what they do is most certainly not for me. The music ... I'm ambivalent about. But then the vocals start and it's time to skip to the next song. And there are so, so many of them ... Patience rewarded -- Jasco and Itsari are unexpected oases of beauty in a stormy sea of yelling and ear-splitting turbulence.
Tough listen on a weekend Fave track: Straighthate
By the mid-Nineties, heavy music was splintering into a hundred subgenres, and Sepultura arrived with Roots sounding determined to flatten the map. The Brazilian metal institution channels thrash, groove, industrial clang, and indigenous percussion into something primal and punishing — an album that feels less like a collection of songs than a sustained assault. Admirers will call it uncompromising. Skeptics may simply call it exhausting. There’s no denying the force of opener “Roots Bloody Roots,” which lands like a cinder block through a windshield. Beneath Max Cavalera’s near-indecipherable roar, the band locks into a muscular groove, while extra layers of percussion give the track a pulse that separates it from standard-issue metal bludgeoning. It’s the record’s clearest statement of purpose: rage with rhythm. Elsewhere, Roots is most interesting when it leans into that rhythmic experimentation. “Ratamahatta” is gloriously strange, all stuttering chants, vocal tics, and percussive bounce, suggesting a collision between Faith No More’s sense of absurdity and the then-emerging nu-metal scene. Mid-album detours like “Jasco” and “Itsári” offer a welcome breather, using acoustic guitar, tribal chanting, and hand percussion to create atmosphere rather than annihilation. But at more than 70 minutes, Roots asks a lot from listeners who aren’t already converted. The relentless barrage of downtuned riffs and barked vocals can blur together, and the album’s commitment to intensity often comes at the expense of dynamics. Even curiosities like the 13-minute “Canyon Jam” — a collage of crickets, percussion, and what sounds like gunfire — feel more admirable in concept than compelling in execution. Still, there’s real conviction here. Roots may not be an everyday listen for the uninitiated, but in smaller doses it works as formidable adrenaline music: passionate, punishing, and impossible to mistake for anything else.
Didn’t like this. Tried to like it, but it’s just too shouty. Music for spree killers.
no me mola este estilo
In the mid 90s, Death and Thrash metal had gotten increasingly popular with a lot of bands entering the mainstream with a crossover sound. This wasn't simply a matter of selling out though: Sometimes, pushing the narrow confines of the Death/Thrash/Grind genres could be a liberation and help bands to realize their full potential to create true masterpieces (think: Carcass - Heartwork). With Sepultura, it is even more complicated. Along the way from Arise over Beneath The Remains and Chaos AD to Roots, the became a better band, wrote better songs and produced better sounding albums. At the same time, the songs got groovier and somewhat simpler and crossed over into cringe territory with the inclusion of more and more tribal elements. It is a matter of discussion when they were at their peak, but on Roots they were definitely past their peak. The album sounds incredible: thick, juicy and precise at the same time. Some of the slower grooves are mesmerizing, but all in all, this is not a good album.
Maybe more of a two-leaning-three.
Talk about diminishing returns. Two albums by these guys? I guess they get a 2 because the effort is palpable.
nei danke, aber merci
Kind of interesting metal with a brazilian background at first, but got old quick
This was tough. There’s some good things going on musically, but the vocals are rough
Not for me.
Not as good as I remember it. Pretty heavy and love that they are including Portuguese but just didn’t hit the same as a metal head teen
Impressive super heavy metal with Latin flair. Head banging galore. Not my cup of tea but was worth a listen. No songs that really stand out.
It had potential but the guttural scream vocals aren’t working for me
Absolutely not.
Yeah no, these vocals are not for me. Which is a shame, because there’s a lot of interesting stuff going on musically: many awesome drum grooves and guitar riffs, and Ratamahatta was such an awesome song. I can really see why this is called groove metal. The voice just makes it not fun to listen to for me. Which is also why I really liked the inclusion of the two instrumental tracks in the second half.
okay
enough like hardcore punk that it sounds kinda cool. enough like nu metal that I don't like it and will never listen again. could listen to an album of the quieter instrumental ones. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
Makes you want to run around, maybe even through a wall? Instruments are actually really good here. The drummer is a legit! All in all not for me. 4.8/10
I am not sure how you can scream like that and not lose your voice. The music is not bad, but I can't handle that type of screaming. 4.25/10 Favorite song Jasco Itsari
It was fine for the gym, but nah.
Yeah, nah. I get how this was an important album for metal and where metal was going at the time, but I didn't LIKE where metal ended up going at this time! I hadn't tried this album but knew it was important to the culture, and now after giving it a shot... it's just not for me.
Brazilian roots music didn't hit
not my thing
Screamy metal should be something I like. This is just not hitting.
I’m too medicated for this much anger.
The voice is not working for me
Pretty weak: some big riffs but tedious, and the highly vaunted Indigenization of their sound was superficial window dressing, which makes it feel politically appropriative. And way too long.
I would be more interested if the Brazilian indigenous sounds had broken through more. The unadulterated metal is a world with high walls that I cannot enter.
Got two tracks in before my husband made me turn it off.
They are good at what they do, but what they do is really not my thing.
If I enjoyed Nu-metal then this would be one of my favorites. Very interesting to read about and the softer tracks were nice. Rating: 2.1
Cool riffs, cool Brazilian influences, WAY too long.
2 1/2 Surprised that I liked it
Not my vibe but i know people that’ll love it
certainly one of the albums of all time
Never been a big fan, and think that other bands just simply do it better.
Not for me.
not sure why Sepultura needs 2 albums on this list, but ok then.
Ça change, mais c'est quand même pas pour moi les hurlements gutturaux en portuguais...
Dug the stuff that didn't really sound like metal...but this is still a metal album. What's with all the growlin'
Heavy metal, with some folky/ traditional Brazilian tracks thrown in
Very intense metal. Last song - Yeesh
ca va
I just don't get it and never have.
Intense Metal
Excuse me, sir, your voice sounds quite hoarse. May I recommend a nice cup of hot lemon tea with honey?
Not my type of music, at all. Cool album cover though
Not my kind of metal
Started out thinking it was good, was into it, very heavy but interesting rhythm, some dynamic and melody mixed in. Just wore me down by the end, too much screaming, too much loud, just wanted it to be over.
struggle with nu metal or whatever you want to call this. also way too long dear god
This wasn't as bad as alot of metal I've heard. More interesting melodies and rhythms than most - like the Brazilian influence. There we moments that reminded me a little of At The Drive In - those were good. Then there were moments that reminded me of Korn, like the time Jonathan Davis showed up on the track - those were not good. Born Stubborn was pretty fun. This is way outside my wheelhouse, and probably not coming back, but kind of a fun ride while it lasted.
not my jam, but i guess there were some enjoyable enough tracks
This was a huge departure from Arise, the only other album I’ve heard from these guys. I loved Arise but this, not so much. My first thought was it sounds very nu metal. Then I looked it up and they worked with a bunch of nu metal guys on this album. I’m just not a nu metal guy, so this album wasn’t it for me. Also, skip the last song, it’s thirteen minutes of tribal chants.
would be a solid 4 stars without the singing
I like this type of music but man the production on this is awful
The music is hard to place. Not quite my thing.
I love it when metal bands bring in some elements of where they're from into their music. Alien Weaponry making a lot of their music in Māori is an example and it's awesome. The problem is, much like Alien Weaponry, they hardly lean into it. Most of the album is pretty basic and I largely only like the parts that put their Brazilian roots (you know, like the name of the dang album) into the music. Even when the Brazilian stuff is there, it's usually just there to end the song or as a weird interlude in the place of a chorus. Basically, I need more songs like Ratamahatta.
I probably have ceiling for appreciation of Nu Metal but I respect the hell out of the indigenous rhythmic experimentation and themes explored. And also “Born Stubborn” just goes hard as hell.
Nu Metal? A nice album to study or fall asleep to because there's no way you can distinguish each track...base on my true experience because when I found out, I have already played it four times in a row. Although that's probably my problem with almost all metal albums. The music itself is...not bad though.
The panda eats roots and shoots. That is why they are the lead cause of gun violence
It's a mighty shame the vocals suck more than that girl a few blocks down behind the 7-Eleven on a Tuesday night. The instrumentals and actual metal music was good, and I was banging my head along but then the vocals would come in and ruin the song. A damn shame.
There is a basic question for music. Regardless of influence or novelty, do i like this? The answer here is no. 2/5
While some of the music isn't bad, I did not enjoy the vocals and the album is too long.
i just dont like it
I enjoyed the percussion ensemble sections led by Carlinhos Brown and the playing by Sepultura is outstanding. I just don't like the screaming, frenetic onslaught of most metal bands.
Ehh not for me. 2
Exhausting
Day690 - are bad lyrics better if you scream them?
Reading about the production of this album on Wikipedia was a much more interesting experience than actually listening to it. It sounds just like any other guttural death metal to me. Cool that these guys are Brazilian as opposed to another US or UK band, but the native music is overwhelmed by the metal sound as opposed to being well-interested, although the moments when the native sounds are at the forefront are the most interesting to me. I guess this is a metal album with some intriguing traditional sounds on it also, so two birds with one stone for this list. I preferred listening to this instead of a pure metal album, this had a bit more going for it, like the metal-less midalbum palate cleanser Itsari.
Kept my attention for a bit, but became a bit of a slog after a while. Will check out their earlier stuff though.
This is what Tipper Gore was trying to warn us all about! But seriously, there’s a thin line between the background battle music for Call of Duty and School Shooter-core. This album blurs that line a little too uncomfortably for me. Maybe that makes me overly judgemental, but I’m okay with that. You keep the terrible vocalist’s whisper-screaming his violent lyrics - I’ll be outside listening to some Kenny G if you need anything. And I’ll never ‘appreciate’ or give extra credit to the musicianship in a metal band like this because, as musicians, you choose how to present your music - it’s a package. The choice here was to serve up a screaming shitburger … so, I award no points for the skill with which you do it. Yes, you slap a mean bass, but you ply your trade in a bad genre and a better musician makes a better choice.
Not a fan of growling... but I liked some of the music itself
Sounds like every other metal album
It's neat, the tinges of Brazilian musical history that give Roots both its title and its texture. But I didn't really enjoy most of the actual album.
72 minutes nah
Just couldn't do it... Not a horrible album, definitely loved parts of it but the screaming and growling...
Balsas man silpnokas, noretųsi daugiau screamo. Gitaros ir būgnai labai patinka.
Vocals were quite a big turn off for this album. Musically it was alright but gonna give it a 2
Probably would have given this album a 4 rating if the doofus didn’t roar and tried singing.
Loud. Very loud.
A little too much-a couple interesting tracks though.
not my cup of tea
Very very very very very much not for me.
The Brazilian equivalent of what passes for metal at Eurovision (usually by the Scandinavians). Actually found myself smiling because of the vocals
Expalining to the kids youi had to choose the music you bought and listened to seems wild. As an example I never bought this but the artwork is very famillar.
I'd heard some Sepultura tracks in the 90s, but never really got into them. Listening today, the constant screaming got too exhausting.
The riffs are great, but I just can’t stand the vocal style
This is too heavy for my taste, but despite that was musically pretty interesting. It got lucky in that it’s good music to work out to and that happened to be when I was listening to some of it…that almost pulled it up to a 3 but I dislike the screaming vocals enough that it couldn’t quite get there. A strong 2?
I don’t really mind thrash metal in general. But the vocals make it really hard to say I enjoy it.
So this album is half groove metal half nu metal. I never cared for groove metal much and the majority of nu metal I've enjoyed is from bands that I don't rlly consider nu metal anyway (Deftones, SOAD, early LP) so my expectations were quite low. At least I wasn't disappointed? It's not very good but not the worst thing ever. Some riffs go kinda hard even if they are a bit corny and not my thing at times. The vocals are mostly not that good but at least the guy is not rapping. The distortion towards the end of Breed Apart is quite cool, the riff of Attitude is quite powerful. There is individual good parts of the songs, but really the best thing I can say about it is that I could name around 20 bands that could do it way worse. Which is not much of a compliment either.
i can’t deal with this style of singing. it sounds so monumentally stupid to me. just a big joke—which is fine, i guess, but it’s probably not great art and it’s definitely not fun enough for me to forgive/overlook the stupidity. however, the musical/instrumental parts of these songs is more interesting and melodic than the other thrash metal we’ve listened to, which really does sound like static to me. i also frequently liked the percussion throughout. but ultimately it’s just such a fucking chore to listen to this kind of music and i would never do it in my free time. it’s not even noise, because i often LIKE noise. it’s less substantive than noise. like a mosquito, or car exhaust.
Burst out laughing when I heard the first song. I really can’t listen to songs like this for more than a few seconds. However they do randomly have a beautiful guitar song towards the end (“Jasco”) which is followed by another pretty nice song with (what I’m assuming to be) cultural rhythmic chants. So I guess these two songs make up the section of the album that’s the most explicit manifestation of the titular “roots” concept before returning to the thrash metal style for the remainder. It’s interesting that they brought forward that influence since it sounds like a foundational part of the composition of the whole album, but I can’t say that I personally hear the common thread between their guitar and thrash metal styles.
the percussion rocked my socks off. unfortunately they were back on after track 5.. bc i didn't like the rest as much. .
Shouty shit. It does have a good bassy driving riff and beat to it but the vocals are whack in my opinion. It like RATM with nothing to say well screetch.
This is really not my bag at all, I enjoyed the drums but otherwise hard going. Maybe would have liked it more if not for the vocals.
I’m sure some people like it. I’m not one of them, although I did warm to the favela time ruhmawattmumma or something. Just too aggressive for me.
First things first, I have always loved rock and metal, both have many unique styles contained within. One of the worst to me is the death/doom/black metal crap with a singer that can't sing, just yells and screams. They are usually processed far too much to sound like demons or whatever. So much that you can't understand 1 word in 10. And then somehow... this has become the frigging default mode for all metal ?? I tried listening to early Sepultura way back and was not impressed. I tried again today and can confidently say I am still not. Now, if they had a singer that sang? I would be pretty cool with this. It's got some cool music behind it. A little same-y throughout with the chugga chugga, but not annoying. But with this fella yowling and yelling throughout, it's just broken. I'll give it a 2 because the music pretty good. But i can guarantee I won't ever listen to this one again.
A couple songs are all right, mostly because of the percussion which was fun.
A much younger me - before this record even came out - would’ve been all in on this. But wow, that’s a long album. And also has dudes from Korn. Anyhow, as with most anything in this genre, I dig the music a bit and can’t take the guttural scream seriously. It just takes me out of the song every time, whether it’s this or Deafheaven.

Music great. Singing is not 2/5
2.5
Honestly... If ya wasn't for the vocals I really kind of like this album. But the screaming Cookie Monster sound, especially since it's the primary delivery, I absolutely abhor. Part of me wants to at at least 2½ because I do like most of the groove behind the vocals. But damn, I never want to hear this fucker sing again. (4.45) ★★
Like the Brazilian influences, but not my favourite thing. 2.5 stars
This very much was not my thing. I do appreciate some of the Brazilian elements that pop up, and it makes it ever so slightly more interesting than the average metal album from this era, but the vocals are awful. Highlights were probably "Roots Bloody Roots" and "Ratamahatta". 2 stars.
I understand that for the genre this is foundational etc but the style is too abrasive to be anything other than a very occasional listen.
THIS ALBUM IS SATANIC. listened while erging and it lowkey scared my shitless. but lowkey still fucked w it idk... but the vocals were so disturbing i thought i was gonna be part of an exorcism eeeek
I thought this was going to be the band Roots, not the album. My ears were caught off guard to say the least. Overall, not my jam.
Once again, as with all the speed metal grunty music, I see the musicianship and skill, but they’re not doing anything I want to hear. A couple of instrumentals weren’t bad mostly no thanks.
The occasional bits that weren't nu-metal were ok.
Musically this was great, vocally I just couldn’t get into it. It’s a shame, I like metal but I just didn’t like this guys vocals.

This one is rough. I tried, but it's just not for me. Nonstop yelling and noise with very little room to breathe. The brief breaks into tribal beats and rhythms were cool, but they're gone before they can settle in. Honestly feels like the soundtrack to breaking things in a garage. One listen was enough. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions: - Itsári - Canyon Jam
Meh not my style for metal
Sepultera has one mode, and that mode is hard and angry and loud as fucking hell. Some riffs undeniably rock, but the unrelenting guttural screams of the lead and the punishing wall of sound wear out their welcome.
I really like the instrumentation, the guitae riffs,… but the constant screaming really put me off
There probably is a chug chug album somewhere that I need to hear before I die but I don't know if it was this chug chug album. It felt so long
godflesh 🙂 + korn 🙁 + tribal stuff 🤷🏼♀️
I don't like this kinda music :/
What a challenge for me! Starting off with Heavy Metal.. I am probably not so objective on this one. I wanted to find one song that I liked. Canyon Jam. That is not a reflection of if the album is good or not. I do not typically like this music. Rating 2
Can’t get past the ridiculous screeching vocals.
13 year old me liked this sort of thing. Was a big fan of Chaos A.D. I've since grown out of it. Could be worse, but too much screaming for me anymore.
The parts without vocals weren't so bad?
Not loving the vocals.
Interesting drumming, but those vocals. Oof. Standout track: Ratamahatta
Never got into this album.
2 stars for roots bloody roots.
I could tolerate this more than the previous albums but I’m still not a fan of this sort of heavy metal with the singer just yelling at me angrily. lol
Not for me, not listenable
Not a fan but they do have a vibe.
Sounds a lot more like Deftones, Korn, and maybe even Slipknot than I was expecting.
I like a lot of heavier bands but I’m just not into this thrash stuff. The vocals are just really, really fucking irritating.
Liked the drums and underlying native feel, but couldn’t understand the lyrics and not my cup of tea
I was hoping that the fact they're a Brazilian band would bring something new to the heavy metal table, but it's like they have just 2 modes: up to 11 with screaming and a heavy sound or quiet guitar/percussion/whatever Itsári is. There was maybe one song that was a bit of a mix. Disappointing
Just nor for me
I have mixed feelings on this one. The instruments really stood out. Some intense drumming. The vocals were not for me. Too aggressive and rough so I hard time connecting with it. Glad I gave it a shot, even if it is not something I would put on my playlist.
Brazilian heavy metal
I'd prefer this album to consist entirely of generic tribal jams, but sadly it does not.
Look you gotta appreciate the diversity of this list when a Brazilian Metal band is included. No question about it, these guys make good head-banger music. I was jamming to the early parts for sure. However, it is extremely hard to get past the constant screamo shit. And with over an hour runtime, it gets old fast. Putting this one as a 2 and would've went higher if the album wasn't so damn long. Now if you excuse me, I need to go find some shit to break...
Was enjoying the actual shredding in this album, but the vocals just got worse and worse as it went on.
Props to you if you like this but this is just not for me. Too screamo even if the music rocks hard af. Still hating the vocals....The end of Breed apart is static I do not like this. Again the music is great and if it wasn't screamo I would be into it. Low 2. My head hurts.
Roots bloody roots on joskus salitreenin aikana soinut.
1-2
I think I've heard something from the album before. The album is quite cool but way too long 2/5
I was so excited to see that I got my first metal album on this generator. Unfortunately, this excitement did not last. The music itself was good. I'm a sucker for some good riffs and a killer drummer, which this band definitely has. The last few songs also had a cool tribal theme with all kinds of chants and different instruments being used. What was difficult to swallow was the vocals. I had to take multiple breaks from listening due to it becoming too overstimulating at multiple points. The lyrics often became almost unintelligible, which is a shame as part of the reason I love rock/metal music so much is because of the combination of great instruments and great vocals. This was just, what I would consider, an enjoyable listen for me personally.
Too heavy for my liking but I can appreciate their work
Not a fan of angry music usually, but I see the point, and they’re obviously talented musicians
This would be great without all of the ridiculous heavy metal thrusting all over it. Quite enjoyed Canyon Jam.
This aged worse than I remember sorry. I used to like this record a lot, I don't know what changed. I think part of the problem is that it's way too long.
Cool concepts, some cool things done with instrumental parts, but nu metal themes and screamed vocals off ramp me real quick. I know this is a me problem but it didn’t go for me.
In the Murmur entry, I mentioned buying that album on a school trip to Germany. I also bought Doolittle. My roommate on that trip, Gaven, bought a copy of Roots. And he played it! This was much better than previous school trip where one of my roommates played a bootleg dance remix of Loser late into the night: "I'm a raver, baby, so why don't you kill me." My memory is that Sepultura were harsh and impenetrable. I was much relieved when Gaven put on Black Sabbath's second album instead. Naively, I thought Sepultura was extreme metal, which it isn't. But, in that first listen, I certainly missed the integration of Brazilian instrumentation and indigenous performance. To be honest, it only came through occasionally and, when it does, it either feels like a field recording (much like the 'spiritual' at the end of Birth Slide Show by Badnose) or an affectation (the Spanish guitar on The Unforgiven). Of course, Sepultura's usage here is deeper and more sincere and, with closer listening, it is apparent in the percussion more generally. But can you listen more closely? Yes, I can and there's something to be found in there. However, many of the reviewers here say they can't. Max Cavalera's vocals are too abrasive and guttural. If only they could hear the grooves without that vocal style! Well, that's what happened: Cavalera left Sepultura and nu-metal rose to prominence, the exact same grooves but with distinct vocals. It should have been obvious that this was coming. The title track opens with the same needling guitar sound as on a bunch of Korn records. There's the Ice Ice Baby riff. And those caesuras are very nu-metal. My experience with Sepultura hasn't been kind. Once, I was too ill-informed and too unfocused to hear the songs through the rough exterior. Now, I'm too focussed and can't ignore the awful scene that groove metal birthed. I don't blame Sepultura for what followed and I respect their commitment to the folk music of their nation, but, compared to the other metal albums we've listened to, they put their own focus in all the wrong places. 2 This is an album of superficial charms; mesmerising heaviness, good death voice, dramatic riffs, a sense of the exotic/non-generic in the sporadic tribal stuff and the Portuguese…. I shouldn’t have read this album’s lyrics. Anyway, even at my thirstiest for low-tuned groove rage an hour is more than I needed of this. Some of these tracks are admirably concise - the opening trio, Born Stubborn - packing musical and textural detail tight. Why isn’t the album more concise? 2/5
A bit hard for my taste. Can appreciate though
18/1001 I couldn’t bare it. I like metal, but the metal where they yell all the lyrics like Cookie Monster with a tracheotomy is just too much for me. I listened to the first 6 tracks. After the first 3 I was about to quit and change the album, but decided to give it one more chance. Then the 4th track “Ratamahatta” happened. It is so good, so unique, so different, with minimal and well placed screaming, and I should listen to more. Well the next 2 tracks were more screaming. And it was starting to ware me down. I couldn’t listen anymore. If this were an instrumental album, it would probably be a 5 star work of art. The screaming was just way too much to fight through. I will revisit this album a song or two at a time over the next few weeks. I want to hear the whole thing (my plan for all these albums).
A couple of tracks in I was thinking this would be a 3. The music was good and the screaming had a bit of melody to it. Surprisingly I didn't hate it. But then it just kept going. And screaming. And the vocal melodies started all sounding the same. Nope.
i don’t really enjoy it but did nod my head along to some songs ngl.
Very heavy... If I liked this type of music I would probably enjoy this. But I do not enjoy this genre of music. But I'd rather listen to this over Nice Cave and The Bad Seeds.
Oof, two growled metal albums in a row. I can't take it. The second half of the album was better than the first.
Heavy metal has grown on me but going through 60 mins of it is still too much to ask . I did enjoy the fusion here, although I think I was hoping for more Brazilian and less nu metal … I will work my way through this and have a few songs for my workouts now though
Very important to have something A. Brazilian B. Heavy Metal in this list. sadly, not my stuff. Cool aspects but heavy metal gives me headaches
Another metal album and is over an hour long. Sure the Brazilian influence in some of the songs was refreshing but the album is such a drag.
liked the tribal influence but still dislike metal unfortunately
While I enjoyed the idea of the concept of the Brazilian band making music with some of the most isolated tribes in their country, it's still a bit buttrock-y. I believe everyone acted well and seemed to havea good spiritual experience and connection, but I wish it came out more in the music
I didn't think I would like this album at all but I was pleasantly surprised. The mix between metal and more traditional music was pretty cool. There were a lot of great guitar riffs too. Still not quite my favorite kind of music, but I'm glad I gave it a listen. Favorite Songs: "Attitude", "Canyon Jam"
I’m so glad that this gives joy to people. But I couldn’t stand listening to it. As with most metal I appreciate the musicianship but it just puts a frown on my face. 2/5
mi fanno sempre un po' senso gli album di questo genere
No thank you. I gave it a try.
I used to listen to this stuff. Not sure why.
Almost a 3. The whole screaming into the mic and not singing any notes at all get really tedious. Really detracts from some good music.
I don't dislike the genre, but this isn't the best example of it.
iznenadilo me koliko je dosadno
Ballroots
Well this is not going to be good or necessary. I like this kind of music but not this album
I’m on board with the music, it’s quite good and the Brazilian roots make it interesting. However, the singing is a huge turn off. Screamed vocals are so corny and undermine the message.
Metal dudes, eh. Do they ever like, you know, just take a day off and chill? 🥲 This record does get interesting when the band introduce more indigenous Brazilian sounds.
The music is good, but the vocals really ruin it. I would appreciate this album much more if I didn't have to listen to the screaming. Why must there be so much screaming?
The times when it is not Nu-Metal are good. Thrash, heavy, makes you want to bust through a wall. But the Nu-Metal bits? Makes me want to hit my head into a wall.
I'm not a fan of the heavy metal screamo voice, so this isn't really doing it for me. I do like the Brazilian influences and instrumentals (Itsári and Canyon Jam were cool), but not enough for me to get past the singing style.
A little too heavy for me
I like a lot of what they’re doing: tight guitar and bass and drums, lots of energy, some Brazilian influence… it’s the screaming I can’t stand. Ruins it for me. The same album, with a good vocalist, would be great.
I like metal but I guess I need to be in a certain mood for this kind of metal. The instrumentals are good and I did enjoy the Brazilian twist that was intertwined throughout. However the vocals fell flat, this is the type of metal vocals that just doesn’t do anything for me as I cannot understand anything that is being sung and it just comes across as guttural screaming. It’s especially grating when the album is a long as it is. I had to tap out on the last song when it was crickets and experimental bongoing for 13 minutes. 3/10
I like Chaos A.D. always way more but I guess it‘s a kind of critics thing because of the political importance
No me gustó mucho. Tiene interesantes mezclas de ritmos y coros primitivos, pero me aburrieron todas las canciones.
i just really don't think heavy metal is my kind of music lol. i think its a cool concept to merge Indigenous music with heavy metal, and i think its great that they wanted to do that to celebrate Brazil's marginalized Indigenous population. I did enjoy the moments on the album without the screaming where it was more melodic- or the songs like "Jasco", and "Itsári" with a more traditional Indigenous sound. but overall this was not for me. i'm just really not a heavy metal fan and i don't think this project is going to change that lol
Not listened to this before and for good reason! From the get go I was immediately transported back to the Swan pub (early '90s) in Liverpool when the adolescent metal heads seized control of the juke box with devastating effect. Shouty, grunty, angry & silly. And it did not relent. I persevered and finally some discernable melody broke out during Jasco & Itsár. I could even hear the tribal sounds of Brazil that this album is famous for. And then, back to shouty, angry man again. I can admire in some ways the people who like listening to this type of stuff. Fair play on them they have ploughed a singular furrow for themselves & one that any sane person would never enter. Unfortunately, this is not for me and I would award 2 points only, if only for some nice acoustic guitar work in the aforementioned tracks listed above.
Not personally for me though I am not a huge metal head. My favorite song was the very sparse soundscape called something to do with canyons. A bit too industrial for my tastes
I kind of like Ratamahatta, Jasco, Itsari, Canyon Jam
For years I thought Ratamahatta was a Korn song but I guess its only the drummer, I just remember my brother blasting it to wake me up in the morning. Loud and abrasive are the two things that come to mind for this album, like most of this genre its better in small doses, after an hour I'm drained and annoyed.
They can play the hell out of their instruments and there was some cool Brazilian instruments and rhythms but this was overall a thoroughly unpleasant listen. Why are the most difficult to enjoy albums so long? If this was a tight 40 I would have enjoyed it a lot more but much like the Slipknot albums we’ve gotten… I don’t want to be screamed at for over an hour. “Ratamahatta” was pretty interesting at least… wait is this where the Korn man got his Badu nam na hemas from?!?!?
The first track is a straight up banger and a great into to the album. However, I feel things taper off, become almost repetitive, until the last track. The final track is just warbling and screeching nonsense. Sad finish.
en jaksa tätä feikattua aggressiota. onneksi on muutama järkeväkin biisi siellätäällää... ette ole vihaisia... hohhoijjaa nukuttaa tämmönen.. manufakturoituja tunteita... ette tunne vihaa.. ette tunne edes vihan nimeä (perkele.. satan's great-grandfather...) raa raa raa. nyt vedän kaljuksi koksa oon niiin känkkä ränkkä.. nyt kasvatan yököttävän letin koska oon niiiiin tuhmalla päällä...perus metallijaska pölinää..kyllä brassikengät alkaa kalkattamaan poispäin kun vastaan tule......... SUOMEN POJAT......... Put your middle fingers up Take a shot, throw it up and don't stop I'm, I'm, I'm living that life on the dark side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCKING LEAAAAAAAAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! itsari (tehkää se heh..)
Pretty sure there's not enough anger in me to enjoy this. There are a couple nearly redemptive tracks late in the hour and a quarter (Gimme a break!!) but not nearly enough. Basically, it's a crap genre.
This sucks*. *For a non-metal fan. Wish I could, as it's got great energy.
Brazilian heavy metal. Not my favorite
I know that a ton of people like being yelled at. I'm not one of them.
The singing destroys it all. Music's ok, 'tho I'm not a fan of that kind of metal.
Demasiado hard para mi. Infernal
