Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Some interesting ideas with the mixing of metal and tribal music, but it would have been much better if they had done this while maintaining the Chaos AD sound. Their turn towards nu metal doesn't work so well and there are way too many filler.

# Album Name: Roots # Artist: Sepultura # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Meh # Top Tunes: None that stood out. # Would I listen to it again? No.

Almost all the best moments on this album are where they lean into the Brazilian side of things (Ratamahatta, Itsári - Born Stubborn has a bit of groove about it too). For these tracks I'll give it a bump up from Arise, but I still found it quite gruelling to sit through. 2.5

I would bump this up two more stars if the vocals were more that throat scraping screams.

Some months ago, I listened to and reviewed Sepultura’s “Arise” with a weary but faintly charitable two-star rating. While listening, I was intrigued to read about their follow-up “Roots”: that it’s widely viewed as a more successful and cohesive recording, that it sees the band exploring and embracing their Brazilian heritage, and utilises more tribal rhythms (including recordings with indigenous Brazilian tribes). It sounded fascinating, like the kind of album that could finally turn me on to nu-metal. Imagine my disappointment and disdain, then, when we open with the same-old down-tuned riffs, same-old double-pedal wallop, and same-old throat-scorching bellow of “ROOOOTS. BLOODY ROOOOOOTS”. To my unrefined ears, it was interminable and inseparable from anything else in the genre I’ve heard. The first three tracks continued in much the same manner: they all just felt so flat and lifeless, with any dynamics or light and shade choked out of them by omnipresent sludgy riffs and thudding bass drum, or overbearing screamed vocals. I was on track for a one-star rating… and then I sat up when “Ratamahatta” rolled along. Putting the groove in groove-metal with a killer rhythm, expanded percussion set, and vocals delivered like an incantation. Truly ear-grabbing stuff, giving me all the goodwill I needed to hear the rest. Later, we get a MUCH needed reprieve from the vocals (and almost everything else) with back-to-back acoustic instrumentals “Jasco” and “Itsari” (the latter with performances by the Xavante people). Less successful is “Ambush” stitching in some tribal drums in the middle of a metal song, which comes across ham-fisted and awkward. And “Canyon Jam” is a thirteen minute, faintly indulgent percussive workout to close the set: I can’t help but admire the ambition, though. As for the rest: despite these really intriguing moments, “Roots” winds up being an exhausting and wholly unnecessary seventy-two minute listen that I’m unlikely to ever have in my collection. I may as well copy and paste my verdict from “Arise”: “…emphasis on chugging, grinding riffs played out against a steady beat… low end taken up almost entirely by sludgy rhythm guitar… a tough, often grating and increasingly repetitive listen, but not as irredeemably awful as a lot of the metal I’ve sat through so far… …while the pace is lively and the technical prowess is undeniable, the main thing turning me off here is the vocal performance… draining the songs of any nuance, range or depth that they could have otherwise had. It makes this a really difficult listen and unlikely to be something I’ll revisit, though I’d stop slightly short of abject hatred.”

You might as well just have sent me to the crazy house

That was ok. Surely an interesting concept, but its execution was ho hum

This is album #412 and I'm still forcing myself to listen to the whole thing. A couple, maybe 3 songs were ok.

Badger music

A little too screamy for me after the first song.

For a metal album, the worst part of it is the Metal. There are basically two albums in here. One is a traditional metal album, sung in English that is meh. The other adds it's Brazilian roots to it and is amazing. More of that, please. 5/10

Not my thing.

Headache-inducing.

While I can see the draw of Sepultra and I can hear the talent of the band, it's something I recognize but cannot find enjoyment in.

👁️👄👁️

So I really hoped that this would be in Portuguese so I wouldn't have to really pay attention to the lyrics. Overall comment what is it with metal singers singing like they really really really need to cough? That singing just ruins it for me and takes out the originality of the vocals, making all metal sound the same. Also they just repeat scream the same lines over and over...the repetitiveness lyrics just make the songs longer without adding much. All of the songs just sound the same after a while. Metal rant done...I read reviews which lead me to reading the lyrics for the songs. That helped and there is some beauty there and refreshing to see them speak of real world issues. I liked tiny parts of Ratamhatta...the parts that showed the Brazilin influence. Jasco and Itsari were really cool. I can see how someone could give this a 3 or 4 (maybe) but I really can't listen to this again.

Ugh, I really don’t like this type of music. Even if it has deeper meaning in the lyrics and decent instrumentation, I can’t get past the loud noise and yelling. I do appreciate the few tracks that were more tribal and not metal. The things this project is doing to my Spotify algorithm, lol. Can we be done with nu metal now?

Too damn long. Half decent songs at the beginning but I really don’t like this genre

not for me

This was a wild ride to something between 2 and 3 stars. I did like the Brazilian influences and sounds.

Started out somewhat interesting, but by the middle of the album was just too much

As Roots Bloody Roots blares from my speakers, I anticipate something special from the album Roots. It’s a standout metal anthem, and I think, “If the rest is this good, it could be my favorite Sepultura album!” Unfortunately, the album is a major disappointment. Aside from a few decent tracks like *Born Stubborn* and *Ambush*, the rest varies from mediocre to downright awful. *Lookaway* is particularly bad, with muddled guitars and a chaotic mix of vocals that feels more like noise than metal. Even the instrumental tracks, like Jasco and Itsari, outshine much of the metal content. Ratamahatta is original but ultimately ineffective, and Canyon Jam—a 13-minute tribal percussion piece—feels pointless. Overall, only 16 minutes of this album deliver the metal I crave. I rate it a 2 out of 10, mainly due to a few solid songs amid a sea of missed opportunities. The blend of metal and world music here is a failed experiment.

not for me

Get used to this album. It's the music they play in hell. 24/7.

I really don't like the growl vocals. But the instrumentals were pretty cool! I tuned a lot of this out gotta be honest.

The equivalent of getting a power drill into your forehead. Can't say I'm a fan of heavy metal and this did little to convince me. I respect the craft, but just not for me. 4/10.

Ooh, ow my ears hurt a little. Not my favourite thing but I was interested to learn that this band I mostly know through 90s metal shirts worn by other people, is from Brazil.

72 minutes of angry screaming

Shame. There’s some fuckin awesome music underneath the vocals. I just despise that guttural screamo style of vocals. Album’s also half an hour too long

Sepultura, a band hailing from Belo Horizonte, which happens to be a city I’ve spent a bit of time at in recent years. Alas, their familiar geographical origin did little to secure them a musical place in my heart.

I'm not familiar with Sepultura, but the description of this album seems really interesting, so I'm curious how I'm going to feel about it. Well, Roots is definitely an experience. Based on the description of this album, I expected something more Brazilian-influenced in the sound, but in my opinion, this was pretty much just another metal album. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, but I felt like it didn't really fit the bill of how it was sold to me. There were some Latin and Brazilian influences, but I felt like they were few and far between. Over the course of this album's 72 minute run time (just under an hour if you don't count the 13 minute "Canyon Jam"), this album's sound just wore down on me. I was pretty bored with this about halfway through, and I never managed to get interested again. I really wasn't a fan of the guttural vocals, and there wasn't really anything musically that kept my attention either. Again, I don't think this is a bad album, but it's definitely not my taste. I hope the other Sepultura album that's still waiting for me is more up my alley.

Well, it’s better than rap so must be a 2.

I didn’t derive any enjoyment from listening to this one today, it became tiresome rather quickly. I do enjoy some varieties of metal a lot, but this groove/nu metal doesn’t really do much for me This definitely would’ve sounded better if I didn’t listen while driving: the roads are so loud that music like this turns even more into just a wall of aggressive noise

Some interesting percussion work and I appreciate the melding of metal with indigenous sounds. I wish there was more of that. The vocal stylings are really what put me off here, it too often veers into what sounds like violent retching.

Creepy and horrifying. Seems demonic. That said, very creative. Gotta respect the artistry. C teir.

Positive: South American folk elements Negstive: Blended into a template I personally don't care for.

Despite this being about 180 degrees from “my thing”— and, for many of you readers, I imagine this is not your thing either— I feel a defense is necessary. Yes, I did laugh extra hard when they started track 1 with “ROOOOOOOTS! ROOOOOOOOTS!” (why do they all do that?), and yes, some of the lyrics are particularly cringey when translated from monster-speak. But there remains something extra musical and kind of charming (?) with some of the music here. Amid waves and waves of cringey doom roars, I turn my head and go— wait— what’s that percussionist doing? That was kind of sick! Same with the guitarist. This is far, far from my favorite metal album (is this even metal? Far more angsty and scream-adjacent), but there is something redeeming in the playing and general tightness of everything other than the groans, moans, the microphone spit-launching sessions. 2/5. Too long!

can appreciate the playing but this is clearly not for me

Roots Bloody Roots and not a lot else......

I can hear the capabilities and inventive but to me this sounds like Korn. It’s the singing that alienates me

Brazilian Heavy Thrash Death Metal…didn’t see this coming. If one was a fan this might be a good one. Nope.

Hard and tough. I'm sure this is impressive live on stage, but I'm not gonna listen to music like this at home.

the comments on the "roots, bloody roots" are worth an extra star alone.

A little better than the last Sepultura album, but still not really for me.

This was long. Too long. So much angriness.

I suppose that it sounded like music, but not like any music that I enjoy.

Seriously? Someone thinks I must listen to (at least) two Sepultra albums before I die? That is incorrect. I did however enjoy this more than the other one whose name I can't be bothered to look up. Though Roots seems unnecessarily long, there are a few interesting tracks in the mix to break up the monotony.

2 stars for Poatan’s walkout song.

Roots Bloody Roots or Ratamahatta

Great sound but wasn’t a fan of the lead singer

Unique influences but not my bag

35/100

Ummmm. Not so into scream-music anymore. Had I heard this when it came out I might have liked but…. Maybe? Best rants: Roots Bloody Roots 2.5

I do like metal but not in this case

Can’t handle the bloody roots :(

Giving a 2 for the idea to use the Brazilian roots in the music. But never really liked it, only some bits and pieces from a couple of songs. Also remember all of a sudden all these brazilian baseball kind of shirts were introduced on the festivals where black shirts were the norm :)

The quality difference with Arise is major. Yet there are a few really good songs on this album, but in general it is just too much nu-metal for me, especially the vocals.

It's monstrous, just one additional star for the tribal elements.

This was an interesting choice. Brazilian metal sounds more impressive than it is. They rock hard and the instrumentals are impressive. Not sure what else was going on though. This felt like a filler for a metal album so they went with a wildcard choice. Yet there hasn’t been a tool or painters album yet. Both of which are more impressive. 4.4/10

Bare metall. the vocals are not my taste (shout)

In which some of the coolest, tightest, heaviest instrumentals in this entire book are paired with some of the most unbearable vocals of all time

I like metal but couldn’t get into this for some reason.

The rhythms and riffs are pretty awesome. The screaming, not so much.

I hadn't listened to any Sepultura until now, I assumed they would be heavy, loud and metal melting and I wasn't far off. Their abrasive, aggressive sound isn't something I would seek out, nor would I remotely consider this essential, but clearly, they have fans that are engaged with their sound. I'm too old to tolerate being shouted and growled at, it's angry and fast which normally doesn't bother me, but really it's time to grow up and move on...

Puh, schwierig.

Although I’m not a fan of this kind of metal with the screaming, harsh voices, it was cool to hear some Brazilian-Caribbean rhythms infused into the metal genre. Also the instrumentals honestly rock

Okay honestly not as bad as i was expecting. The brazilian funk elements do add quite a bit. But its still screaming metal so not for me

Well…. This is my first “metal” album here, and I simply don’t appreciate the genre. The vocals are the sound of angry puking, which seems to be a real “thing” in metal. It’s almost like every band is a parody of the style. I looked up the lyrics, and they seem benign, but the “chorus” is generally a single phrase repeated 4-6 times. The music is really driving, high energy…. Relentless…. Perhaps exhausting. And there’s not a lot of variation from song to song. By the time I was 40 minutes (10 songs) in, I was worn out and had to take a break. There’s some moments here. The percussion / rhythms are often interesting. I almost liked Ratamahhatta, which seems to be in a foreign language (but not one that google translate could figure out). On the other hand, Breed Apart found me thinking of a Spice-Girls-in-Hell kind of vibe…. I could almost sing along Wannabe’s “slam your body down and wind it all around”! The instrumental Jasco and the tribal Itsari are pretty cool, but jarring it its deviation from the rest of the album. The last song is basically 12+ minutes of ambient jungle(?) sounds. It makes Beatles’ Revolution 9 seem like a pop song. When I was in university, I went through a period where I would listen to the 1st side of Sex Pistols’ “Never Mind The Bollocks” to get pumped up before heading out to campus parties. I can see this might have a similar appeal. But that was many years ago, and was only for a few months. And only ~20 minutes at a time. I see a similar appeal here. Not my thing, but better than a lot of stuff I’ve heard here. 2/5

The only redeeming track was Jasco. and if you're looking for instrumental in the woods (drums and percussion) Canyon Jam might be ok. Otherwise screaming metal blach.

Why so glum, chum? The musicians jam pretty well but Cavalera’s vocals are insufferable. I’m not 14, my mom didn’t ground me from the big dance, my teeny bopper girlfriend didn’t dump me. I don’t want to listen to some hoarse asshole screaming in my face like a heavy metal cliché. I have no teenage sorrows to drown with mock rage.

I misread the title thought I was looking forward to a new roots album I haven’t heard, as I’m a big blackthought fan. The first song caught me completely off guard. But for metal interesting sounds.

huoh ei jaksais tällästä aavistuksen onanoivaa perusmetallia yli tuntia. Miten voi ysärilevynkansi muuten näyttää näin paljon AI:n tekemältä?

Just not my thing. The things I like best were the things that made it not-deathmetal, so it's really more about the genre than this particular album.

The vocals are just dumb. Music was great though. Hmmm.

This was an interesting listen for me and I didn't completely hate it. I sorta liked the songs that brought in the more tribal aspect and give them props for creativity here. Blending any other genre into demon shriek metal has got to be tough, nevermind adding indigenous drumming and chants, bravo. By the end, I thought this was the soundtrack for a movie like Apocalypto or 10,000 BC.

Demon wretch. Some good ones and some bad ones on here. I imagine their shows had some insane shit going onstage, like human sacrifice. One song made me feel like I was in a dungeon watching toture. They threw in some pauses in the chaos with good instrumentals and ancient shaman ritualism which I liked. Not sure why they jammed out in a canyon for 13 mins at the end.

Not my jam Super heacy metal

The music isn't bad but I cannot do these vocals

i did not like that

Well, it's some kind of vibe. Not the worst metal we've had on the list (damning with faint praise), and some of the bits that weren't metal were interesting, but still, mostly, generic dumb metal.

this one did not pass the “getting ready in the morning with the family” test lol then evie accused me of failing to expand my musical horizons (“isn’t that what the project is for??”) so i made them listen to it on the way into school. +1 bonus star for the drama

No thanks. There were a handful of somewhat interesting moments but this never stood a chance.

“Roots” starts so screamingly aggressive, but the second song provides hints of the potential of blending Brazilian and indigenous elements into Sepultura’s thrash metal sound. Unfortunately, that potential is mostly squandered. “Ratamahatta” is the best example of what could have been, and “Itsari” is a welcome respite from the metal. But the transition in sound that was more of a problem was the drift towards the 90s trend of nu metal. A problem, in that most nu metal is pretty awful. But less of a problem since Sepultura’s original sound was pretty awful too.

Maybe impressive for its time but yeah, not as stand-out as many other nu-metal albums of the era.

It's better than most American Metal, which might be a backhanded compliment.

I’m not a metal fan but musically this ok. But the vocals: I absolutely hate the throat singing vocals prevalent in this type of metal. I ruined the song even if the music is decent. Canyon Jam was cool though.

Aika rakasta kuunneltavaa.

Heavy metal is not really my thing so I wasn’t a huge fan of this album however objectively I can say they were a good band and the album would be good if you are into that type of music, but unfortunately not for me.

Not usually my jam, but have always been intrigued by the native Brazilian elements that they include in the music. 2.5/5

Paikoin tosi hauska. Genressään hyvin onnistunut albumi. Mutta tunti tätä? Ei jaksa.

They sounded great. Still not into metal

It's fine.

RAAAAGHB BLOODY RAAAAAAAAAGHB The best example of a shitty genre is still shitty. But hey, it's better than the fogey rock (Clapton et al) on this list so there's that.

Not my cup of tea.

NGSJSJTSTURAHHHHHH

Not a fan of metal albums where it's just guttural screaming. The Brazilian influence in the music is interesting, and there's a few good heavy riffs, but... ehh.

- metal, finally - still it's not totally mine - some cool stuff in there - 3/5?

I liked the interludes and the experimental elements much more than the actual songs. I’d listen to a a whole album of Itsari-type songs over anything else on Roots. Obviously talented at what they do, just to heavy and angry for me at this time. Do love the name Dictatorshit as a song/concept. Nice way to delegitimize/ridicule power. Probably would have loved this album at 17.

A murder of crows descend around the grave of my miserable life. I've died after listening to this shit record. Girls can play baseball too.

Scotland to win Euro 2024. McTominay top scorer. Get all your money on it.

Quite the variation of sounds in this one.

I am brazilian. I respect this album. I just don't enjoy the genre.

As my dash cam can attest, as soon as the singing started on this, I went, "Oh boy." I really don't like metal. I didn't mind the instruments, but the growling -- sorry, I mean singing -- is far too much for me.

Not my thing. even so, more bearable than some of the albums on here. for that I'll give it a little bump.

Not my thing, but seems like a good version of the thing

In my younger days I was tortured by my metal friends who discovered Sepultura and made us listen to it all the time. Since those days I hate everything that involves growling and screaming. Now I can tolerate this album and see some great moments when the Latin percussion elements come in. That's when this album is really interesting to me. Everything else? Not so much.

1/1 tribal metal

Bonkers. Standard predictable metal thrash hokum then goes bongo with classical guitars. An experience. Bonkers

If you take the vocals and instrumentation out of this album, it is perfect. Otherwise, it's an hour and 12 minutes of your life you'll never get back.

Thought their other one was alright but this was fucking pump. Dunno what made the difference.

It’s fine and I really appreciate some metal, but over an hour of those vocals is enough to give me a panic attack. Not for me.

mostly dull metal with noticeably poor vocals, but with occasional sparks of brilliance with indigenous chants and mixed percussion

booooooooooooo

Couldn't get through this one. It's quite heavy, which in itself is not a bad thing, but all the tracks sound alike, and the growling gets old pretty fast. 2/5

I said previously that 1001 has sufficient depth but not enough breadth of Brazilian music and I wish they had explored other Brazilian genres. Hmmm. Perhaps I change my mind on that, lol There are some interesting fusions of Brazilian styles with metal but I'm just not a fan of thrash which is the backbone of this album.

This album was clearly highly influential on nu-metal, and is far better than most of that godforsaken genre. Despite the occasional touches of Latin percussion, field recordings of indigenous song, and acoustic guitar, this is still an hour of yelling, yelling, yelling, over a brutal and repetitive metal riffage. I am exhausted. And the 13 minute percussion jam at the end of the album just adds insult to injury. Alfie, my 15 year old son, wandered into my office while this was playing and his ears pricked up. "What's this?" he asked. When I told him, he went "hmm" in a thoughtful manner and wandered out again. It wouldn't surprise me if he added this to his playlist. But it does go to show, this really is intended for teenage boys, not middle-aged men.

I don't listen to much heavy metal and particularly little of thrash and death metal. I have heard of Sepultura as a band, but that's about it. I didn't even know they were from Brazil. The screaming growl as the form of delivery for lyrics distracts me from most of what the instruments are doing. I don't think I understand where this type of music is coming from or who it is trying to reach. I could easily skip it. I did make it through Roots, but much of the listen was "getting through". "Ratamahatta" was a fair surprise - enjoyed hearing some portuguese. "Itsári" was unexpected and possibly my favorite track. I liked the inclusion of softer sounds and indenous voices. The mellow extended "Canyon Jam" made me curious to hear what sounds would follow within that recording. Towards the end of the album I was starting to hear what was happening in the music, but the vocals kept alienating me from the overall experience. I'd skip this album in the future.

I only need one Sepultura album on my collection of torture devices, otherwise my enemies would be allowed to get variety in their shortened lives.

2/5. It’s a good metal album but I honestly don’t remember most of the songs. Wish it was higher but didn’t stand out enough.

Sepultura is one of those bands that is so integral to a specific genre in terms of definition and scope, but man, I really don't understand why. I am thankful for their role in the development and evolution of metal, but I wouldn't actively listen to them.

not my vibe

Njaahh, not a favourite in my world

I just can't relate to this sort of stuff. No idea if it's 'good' or not for the genre. For that reason it gets 2 instead of 1 stars but nope, sorry, not my cup of tea.

Not my thing

Metal, nu metal is really not my thing, I have headache while I listen to the aggressive music, and aggressive lyrics. The only tracks I enjoyed on this albums are the slower tracks, like Canyon Jam, for example, which stands out maybe too much on this album (and the Brazilian influence is definitely there). 1.5 but since I have never gave 1 on any album, I'll give it a 2.

Yeah, this was not good.

Not my scene, at least not any more

A bit too much for my taste. I had a white-knuckled l, rage driven car ride home from this.

Feels like very generic screamo

Fine ibland!

rOOOts, bloody rOOOOOOOts More enjoyable overall than Arise, with the every-so-often occurance of a groove or riff that conveys the energy they were going for. Still, the imrovement is mostly marginal and the long length doesn’t help with picking out the good parts. I also personally would have leaned harder into the south american folk music aspects than they did, although I wouldn’t have been making a metal album in the first place

Int för mig

The stars are cause they can play their instruments. The vocals make me want to wrap my own throat in a warm cocoon made of melted ricolas and never speak again.

Not a fan of guttural yells in metal. This album had way too much distortion and screaming and it didn't move me at all.

Another Sepultura album and like the last one, I fucking hate the screamed vocals. When they weren't there I was digging the vibes but man why did they have to go and ruin it with a bunch of annoying sounds? Really a shame. Also this album is too long. 1.5/5

Not something I will be rushing to hear again. Heavy metal without melody or tunefulness just doesn't do it for me

I really hated this album when it came out. I felt it was such a departure from what made Sepultura good. Let’s see how time has affected me in my appreciation of this crossover album. Not well, I must say… I still am underwhelmed by what is offered.

y. 5.5/10

Ratamahatta me da mucho miedo. Y Itsári miedo. No le doy 1 por Jasco.

Fave tracks- Attitude,Ratamahatta, Dusted, Jasco The tribal influences in this are very interesting and definitely a departure from typical metal music. Just wasn’t in the right state of mind for this listening experience today. 2/5

Favourite album: Ratamahatta

Listened Before? N I really enjoyed Arise, so it was surprising to me that I didn't enjoy this one as much. It seems the evolution of Sepultura was for them to get more extreme and to scream more. Also, adding in some Portuguese didn't help me enjoy it any more. Not really a fan of this one. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Ratamahatta

Rooooooooots, Bloody Roooooooooots!

This was an interesting one. Lotta screaming and moshing. Super heavy guitar work too. I actually thought this was pretty decent for what it was. The last song on here shouldn't have been included, it was just 10+ minutes of nonsense. 3/10 actually interesting though

Some of the guitar parts are alright, can’t be arsed with all the shouting

i didnt hate it as much as i usually hate heavy metal.

Oh good God. I almost turned it off immediately, but I stuck with it. Listened all the way through. As a rock fan, I have to say there were definitely some good grooves in there. Clearly this style of rock is very high intensity, in your face. Lyrically this seems more like punk rock than metal, although the riffs are clearly more closely related to Black Sabbath than they are to Black Flag. A kind of hybrid. But the vocal style is flat out awful. AWFUL!! Then they throw in the native chanting and Brazilian rhythms in the midst of all the head-banging hatred, and we’re supposed to go, “Ooh! Culture!” The 13-minute long bullshit at the end was completely unnecessary. The album was already an hour long and they throw this shit into the end, for what? I realize Sepultura is a high band, worldwide. It has no appeal for me, however. I’ll find my head-banging elsewhere.

From the first words, I simply cannot take this seriously. This music needs to cast a little more of a spell before it dives into "ROHTS! BLOODY ROHTS!" I'm giggling from the outset. 'Ratamahatta' came around and I was still sort of bemused by it all. On 'Dusted', it ain't gettin' any better. This guy seems very upset. I'll tell you what, a lot of the vocal performance here made me laugh. This probably isn't for me and I'm definitely not keyed in to whatever this is supposed to be doing. Good playing, though? There's a brief respite with Itsari - that was pretty enjoyable! Then we dive right back into the angst. I checked out at the beginning of 'Canyon Jam'. Sepultura did not earn another 12 minutes of my life.

Oh goodness ! Well you wouldn’t expect me to love it. Having said that it wasn’t as bad as I expected. 2*

guttural screamy metal isn't really my fav. I used to love these guys when i was a kid but now, I can really pass on them.

Blaaaaaah, at first thought 'this is okay actually' but it's just too much, I can sustain interest

Cannot feel the energy on this one. Just do not like the main singers voice, production isn’t good enough to carry it, but definitely respect it if someone likes this. Not my kind of music and I’ve heard better

Some of life’s great unanswered questions: where what happened in Roanoke? How does Dr. Bronner fit 18 uses in one soap? Why did Sepultura end this album with a 13-minute long ambient cricket tin can percussion song? 3/10

At times, under all the angry shouty man stuff, there's some interesting things going on at times.

This was just too "metal" for me. Too drums-focused and noisy and too little singing/too much screaming and growling

Ugly arse cover… The album starts with roots bloody roots it’s the kinda in your face slipknot type stuff that oversteps the barrier too much the instrumentation isn’t even good enough to pass on as great. I like the effects put at the start of attitude sounds like a space tribe and the screaming gives the song a needed atmosphere but the screaming isn’t even good screaming. Cut-throat is just more viking screaming. Whereas rathamahatta is a caveman chant better and more primal that it’s predecessor. The vocals in breed apart are way too odd just either creeky or a screamy mess ( wow I hate this album). Okay something I like the first minute of straighthate is interesting instrumentally them it’s the same old shit. Actually, to prevent boredom the rush from spit to dusted all have this same nasty sound to them which I hate, some have redeeming moments where I can see other people loving this but it’s all scream mo substance. But born stubborn kinda hits with me with the rapid instrumentation, it’s a better use for the screaming, still not my kinda thing but I don’t hate it ( now that’s saved this from a 1/5). Now there is a 2 song block of instrumentals first jasco it’s not much just a short bit of folk music. But then is Itsari, well I guess it’s not fully instrumental but it’s still a stupid acoustic based chanter. But I prefer it over like 70% of this album. And the ooga booga voice is back with ambush It’s just repetitive, uninteresting and predictable. The intro to endangered species is cool but then we’re back to the same noise. I guess the spine of the album ends with dictatorshit a drum based rampager with very little guitars, it was a good try and they failed. Canyon jam isn’t worth sitting through! Without these small instrumental moments of greatness it would easily be a 1, this shouldn’t be 16 tracks long this band could only do like 10 okay and there was still some filler. Best songs= the singles Worst songs= that boring stretch in the middle that I didn’t bother reviewing properly

1996 - Heavy metal, Thrash metal, Nu metal, Hardcore punk

I remember this being a thing. Not overly keen though, there's little variety.

I'm polarized by metal, some of it I can get into, some I cannot.

Is the ridiculous growl supposed to be masculine or something? It's awful. Best track: Jasco

Not for me.

Never liked this type of rock derived from Zeppelin a/o Sabbath (as the band biography indicates). But, understand why a band like this was formed is interesting. Some info from wikipedia Sepultura (Portuguese: [ˌsepuwˈtuɾɐ], "grave")[1] is a Brazilian heavy metal band from Belo Horizonte. Formed in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, the band was a major force in the groove metal, thrash metal and death metal genres during the late 1980s and early 1990s, with their later experiments drawing influence from alternative metal, world music, nu metal, hardcore punk, and industrial metal. Sepultura has also been credited as one of the second wave of thrash metal acts from the late 1980s to early-to-mid-1990s.

Not nearly as over the top as I remember it being. It's actually quite melodic in places. It's still too much for me really, but I can appreciate it's a very well made album and at the forefront of 90s thrash metal. It does its thing very well, its thing isn't for me though.

I respect it but not my type

Creative within extraordinarily narrow parameters. When everything word has to be growled and every instrument beat to shit, there's only so much you can do. They do most of it really well, and it's still tired after track two.

OK, I made it through song 9 and I've heard enough. Death metal just ain't my thing and this didn't help. It's listenable, barely, just barely. 1.5stars rounding to 2.

I recognise the power and the uniqueness of this band, but it really is a godawful racket.

Hard to make up my mind about this one. I don't like the local delivery but I do like some of the riffs. Death/Thrash metal isn't really my bag, but it did have some parts I enjoyed. Does it stand up for inclusion on this list, hmmm dunno

Demasiado cañero

Contagious brazilian joy of life

not for me. Interesting to capture melody as a distinct element of thrash metal. Still, merely a curiosity for me, I don't think I could warm to this. Rating here is purely subjective.

I enjoy the tribal chants and percussion but nu-metal/groove metal has never done it for me. I wish they would have stuck with their sound from the first 2 albums and worked the tribal elements I and that.

Definitely not my vibe

Really good.

So much metal in this list. I have nothing else to say about Sepultura. The appearance of Latin influences in some of the music were welcome relief but I just find the croak/growl shouting pointless and intolerable.

The opening of Roots Bloody Roots promised so much, yet as soon as the vocals started it was a big fat no for me. A shame as potentially some bangers with the guitar riffs but I couldn't persevere with vocals that sound like a cat being dragged bum first over a sandpaper covered rasp.

Repetitive black metal, a few moments and a couple of “please can’t we play something else?” tracks.

I thought this was going to be an album by The Roots. Imagine my surprise.

Nope, not for me. Really surprised this band has two albums on this list. Their music is strong, but I can’t get with the vocals.

i'm not really enjoying this. it isn't bad i'm just not enjoying it.

Tried really hard to like it. Love the concept, don't mind a bit of metal if well done. But this was faaaarrrr tooo long and repetitive. Best tracks broke out from the mould (canyon jam and the tribal one).

Very Loud, Very hard, Has a great sound, but you really have to be in the mood for this kind of music to enjoy it. First time hearing this band or the album. 2/5 for me.

Brutal, physical attack music. Some cool blends of tribal rhythms and rock grooves. Won't be riding further in the Sepultura train though, as it's too aggressive and tuneless for my ears.

Roooooots bloody roooooooooots

Unlistenable

Some interesting fusion moments but still not my thing. 6.7/10

2.5 metal is not for me

I didn't like this, but it was interesting. Metal but mixed with some tribal/latin kind of beats.

Some of the heavy metal guitar riffs are tasty but the screaming vocals are just a non starter for me - I don't relate to that aggressive intensity and it's not pleasing to my ear.

Screaming is not great. Guitar sound is ok. Best song was an acoustic track.

Couldn't get through it.

Pitié non non no

More heavy metal yes this is my favorite 0/5

Not my genre

Ugh metal, gross. Yeah this was horrible. Had to skip through almost every song

Scary hard. Nope.

1.1/5 Heavy Metal is not a genre that I can listen to a lot. A few songs here and there I don't mind but a full album is too much for me. I thought the first half of the album was pretty decent but the 2nd half just fell off a cliff for me.

One of the albums on this project where my struggle between rating objective quality or enjoyment of the listening experience was sharpest but the brutal, relentlessly unpleasant slog of this listening experience won out. Hated every second of it.

No, do not like

Not for me

Rarely happens, but I couldn't get past track 3.

Aweful!!

All this hooting and hollering for heavy metal is too much for me. I was not a fan.

The things I have to say ahout the metal genre would get me canceled even anonymously.

Good instrumentals but the shouting got so tiring.

More “music” for the torture chamber. There were a couple of tracks in the second half that didn’t include Satan screaming at me, so I would give those three stars. And there was no Satanic vocalist in the last track, Canyon Jam, but it wasn’t a jam at all… just a bunch of jungle noises, long and boring. I forced myself to listen to a minimum of one minute of each track, but it was sheer agony. I am about halfway through this list, and this makes my list of the five worst so far. One star for this piece of crap.

Uh it's like doing this project is basically reinforcing how much both prog rock and metal just aren't really for me. I listened to as much of this as I can stand because I think there's some interesting things happening musically, but the vocals are just so painful to listen to. Kinda the opposite of prog rock where I like the vocals/lyrics sometimes, but the music is not it for me. 🤔

Metal is not by thing- nothing to sing along to. I don't understand how it doesn't just destroy their voices. I recognize the talent, but this album was a grit my teeth and try to make it through.

Don’t like this

This was a very intense album and I don't know if I like it. I kind of didn't really mind the instrumentals of the first song, before things got really bad, but as a whole, I am not a huge fan of the album, so I am giving it a low rating, but I know that there are people out there who enjoy that kind of music.

Whoa, hard no. I don't get the screamy thing, and this is full of screamy. The music isn't terrible, but together makes my ears bleed and my brain hurt.

way too long

I am only familiar with their name from reading heavy metal magazines. Didn't even know they were Brazilian until reading the Wiki this morning. I'm not really in a heavy metal mood, but we shall see how this goes... *Music starts* OK, not too bad... * Vocals start* Oh lord, not this crap. This is going to be a struggle. I REALLY don't like the guttural death-metal screaming. The music is actually OK as long as the dude isn't scream-vomiting. Rating this will be tough, as it is a genre I have no interest in so I don't really feel qualified to judge it. But good lord do I hate this "singing." How can I give it anything other than 1 star? I will say this for it: about 5 songs in, it didn't bother me as much anymore. But I don't think this was so much a matter of me starting to like it as it was me just getting numb to it or being able to tune it out. My three favorite songs - BY FAR - were the instrumentals.

This is terrible. What are we even doing here? Imagine Slip Knot except with less interesting guitar playing and no second vocalist who can do something other than scream (I think the other thing is called “singing”). Also Slip Knot was successful at creating driving energy that your body can connect to. It’s the kind of energy that makes you want to jump in the pit and hit someone. This tries to do that and fails. The third track Ratamahatta is decidedly less terrible than tracks 1,2, &4 (that’s as far as I got) but a single 2 star track does not make a 2 star record. I award this no points and we are all slightly dumber for having listened to it.

Painful to my ears

Gave it a try, but they still suck.

p782.1996. 1.5 stars. Unpleasant, shouty death/trash metal that outstays its welcome reallll soon. Fun for about the first 3 minutes and then it just becomes annoying. Bonus half star for trying something different on two of the tracks.

It wasn’t Ute Lemper bad, but it wasn’t good

This made me question if I actually like metal music. Hell, it made me question if I actually like music at all.

I just can’t do nu Metal sorry man

If I had to guess what percentage of this list are wasted spots it’d be 15%. This is a 15% album. 1/5

Sounds too much like a typical "cliché" metal album. Instrumentals are fine, but the vocals are just plain old groaning into the mic. Yeah, no, I've heard better.

Bostil metal

Growlingly bad

Skipped several tracks - too Rah for me - Canyon Jam was10 mi utes of wondering if my speaker had broken or wondering if itcwas finished yet . Jasco and Itsari were actually listenable . I suppose albums like this are what this is all about . Shan't listen again though .

Two songs in and I can already rate, this is utter dogshit. Not sure I'm going to finish this.

Yelling screaming metal. Hard pass. Best song: Ratamahatta

Why does this even exist.

Pfuuuui tüpfel Hed mi fast us de schueh grüehrt

WTF? This was a massive waste of my time. Just boring, trite “metal” with screaming on top. The lyrics are juvenile and silly. The closing track—the most out of place song on the album—is almost interesting, but not quite. Honestly, these guys owe me some stars for listening to this stinky doodoo.

Not for me, not my type of music, didn't really enjoy this at all

Absolutely not.

Oh my god, why was this over an hour

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. no.

Nah, not my style

This is definitely the best nu-metal album I have ever heard. It still completely ruined my morning.

Seems like one of those albums that’s on here just for context, the only good thing about this isomer the guitar work, even then it’s not that great

Infect

This is not for me.

Not for me

Unlistenable. I've listened to just about every second of 599 albums. I've gotten to the stage where I know that I really, really dislike this sort of heavy metal. It's the vocals. I just can't be bothered anymore. So, I listened bits of a couple of tracks and decided that, actually, I really didn't need to listen to this. So I didn't. I'm sure I missed some interesting playing of instruments somewhere along the line. But I don't care.

Not for me 1

Nope, nope, NOOOOOOOOOOOPE. Stop screaming at me, and don’t do it for over an hour.

Wer schreit hiere rum... nun ja nicht mein Ding

Just awful, I hated every second of it. Actually I take that back, there was one random acoustic guitar thing in there that wasn’t awful. Also what the fuck was that last song. It was both the dumbest and possibly best part of the album.

Scream in my face once, shame on you. Scream in my face for an hour, shame on me.

Yeah, we ain’t doing this, an 1hr of throaty shouting. yeah, no thanks, this shit really aint for me. I like a good amount of metal, but this vocal style just completely ruins it for me. I will say though the instrumentals are actually pretty good, I do like how they intergrate some of those cultural sounds into this, but I just can't with the vocal style. I gave it a proper try and listened to the whole album like any other on this project but it was a tough listen, the tribal type songs slightly redeem the album as they were an interesting listen. However, I personally did not enjoy this album so its a 1 star from me

My ears are bleeding. I suddenly have a newfound appreciation for The Velvet Underground.

not for me

Nope no way nuh uh

Did not like too aggressive

I was exhausted after this album, holy shit. There is something mildly therapeutic about death metal. But man, I know this just isn't for me.

Heavy Metal

I am..not a fan of metal. Tracks to Track: Roots Bloody Roots

Too angry

Utter pants,

Bro needs to chill out

Awards Instrumental

I don’t like this music generes literally hate it

Initially shocking. But not something I would listen to ever again.

One of the greatest bands of all time, rock at its finest

I’m not hearing much in the way of Brazilian influence, the nu metal screams permeate and, to my ears, sound horrendous. Obviously there are some useful riffs and some bite in the music, but I didn’t grow into this during my 20s……good of its type I guess.

This is pretty dire. Tracks start off sounding a bit interesting and then rapidly descend into a teenage metal band rehearsing in a shed once the vocals start.

Jesus Christ what the fuck was that…. Music for the deaf

I hate this style of musoc.

This was not for me

While the instruments aren’t awful the singer sounds like a deep-voiced angry toddler petulant, irrational, and self-centered beyond all reason.

No. 340/1001 Roots Bloody Roots 2/5 Attitude 2/5 Cut-Throat 1/5 Ratamahatta 1/5 Breed Apart 1/5 Straighthate 1/5 Spit 1/5 Lookaway 1/5 Dusted 1/5 Born Stubborn 1/5 Jasco 2/5 Itsari 2/5 Ambush 1/5 Endangered Species 1/5 Dictatorshit 1/5 Canyon Jam 1/5 Average: 1,25 I really wanted to not hate this. But it's just so far apart from what I like in music, that I could not enjoy this.

Tried many times, giving up. Brazilian Nu Metal. Ain’t gonna do it.

They got their name from a Motörhead song but this album is a far cry from Lemmy. Apparently it’s an album even hated by Metal heads for it’s simplicity and trendiness. I could have gone my whole life and my next life, and the one after that, without ever hearing this garbage.

I did not mind this until the vocals came in. HARD pass.

Not my style

not for me

never liked people yelling at me

I hated every second of this.

Not my style

I hate this musical genre. I could listen until half of the album

too heavy and harsh for me.

Not my cup of tea, but probably not a bad representation of this genre. This kind of screaming hard metal vocal delivery doesn’t appeal to me at all. Wouldn’t search it out, wouldn’t listen again. Again, I don’t think this sucks per se, it’s just not for me.

I am not a fan of metal music. This was interesting in its use of Brazilian instruments but it's still not for me. 1/5

*No music, just loud, annoying noise. Screaming vocals and banging instruments
