Moon Safari

The soundtrack for the Virgin Suicides movie was an interesting one. And it was an album I had a difficulty approaching. I knew Moon Safari would show up eventually, and I was prepared to dive into a strange sounding world. But I still don’t think I could have prepared myself fully. This album is otherworldly in its execution. It’s one of those pieces of music that really makes you think, “How could people come together and just create something like this?” While their movie score had a more varied and progressive array of sounds to fit the moods of the different parts of the film, this album is much more consistent in its main ideas. It’s still definitely progressive though. This record sounds liquified. It moves with fluidity, and carries itself like one of those guys riding the clouds in Mario. It’s also incredibly peaceful. It is at no point in your face, or trying to force you to enjoy it. It lets you sit and really familiarize itself with the sounds you are hearing, and just float along with them. Imagine lying on your back in the ocean, but only far enough out on the shore so that the water comes about halfway up the side of your head. And you just sit there. For eternity. Letting the current delicately push you around. Nine times out of ten, this album sounds amazing. And beautiful at the same time. It is a masterfully produced piece of work, and really pushes the boundaries of ambient pop. Just more proof that even if they suck at everything else, French people know how to make great music. Rating: 8/10

Excellent album.

Starts off with some serious bangers, trails off a little towards the end but it's still an enjoyable listen throughout. Pretty chill eletronica, not much to complain about.

Like a calm sunny day, this album just a peaceful energy to its' tracklist.

It’s a 3.5 that I’ll round up to a 4. I think about half of this album just didn’t fully click for me, but maybe it’s because I was still in a sort of “analyst” mode as opposed to just listening and feeling the vibe. We’ve had a lot of vibe albums lately, but this is very much a vibes album. What’s here sounds excellent; there’s not a single bad track on here, and in terms of super relaxing electronica, this is an album you can both study to and fall asleep to on a dime. For my tastes, some of the songs felt a bit too empty at times or a bit too long, and I was still expecting at least one sort of Daft Punk-esque energy-filled song given the genre, but like… that’s an unfair expectation. This is a good listen, it’s well-recommended, and I’m perfectly ok with a 4 here. Good soundscapes, great vibes.

I've heard this album a few times in the past, and can't say it was an immediate favorite, but I've grown to like it quite a bit. It is quite synthy and chill, and feels like taking a walk late at night. 90's electronic often wears on me, but this is the rare kind that somehow makes the coldness of the genre feel warm.

I can't believe Air and Daft Punk were contemporaries? If you played me Remember and said it was a Daft Punk song I would believe it. Why was France churning out duos like this in the 90s I have heard part of this album before, but primarily I know the song Sexy Boy from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, in the scene where the party fliers for Bogey Lowenstein's party are being dropped down the stairwell This album is just super cool. Chill without being sleepy. There's a touch of sameyness to the songs but it all fits together amazingly as an album. The songs all cohere and blend. It just makes you want to float. Fuck yeah. Easy buttery atmospheric jazzy early synthy electronica. They keep their melodies groovy and cohesive and tight, which i's appreciates. I like that this album is a tidy soundscape package - all songs have the a similar color & mood that makes me believe they belong together.

I rather enjoyed this, after not expecting to. I take all the points people make about it being a bit AI and so on, but it's also got a bit of funk and style about it. And has lots of interesting bits and pieces. It'll do for me.

This was nice to have on in the background for work. I liked the chill vibes. I'm not sure that this needs to be on a list of the greatest albums of all time, but what do I know? 4/5

This may be the epitome of a "kick back," "take a load off," "chill out" albums ever recorded. I have to admit I was introduced to two of these songs about 12 years ago and loved them. Listening to the entire album makes me now love the album. It's almost perfect to my ears minus a few tracks. And the two best tracks bookend the album IMO. Smooth, sexy, and relaxing...this albums sets the mood. Favorite tracks: La femme d'argent, Sexy Boy, Kelly Watch the Stars, Talisman, Ce matin la, New Star in the Sky, Le voyage de Penelope.

Really enjoyed listening to this album. I sort of like having music like that to listen to when I am heading to bed…but also when I’ve got busy work….I will definitely listen to this one again.

I’ve never listened to a full air album and this was great!

Sounds like Daft Punk, but compositions are WAY more interesting. Production value is incredibly high, if there’s not a lot of live instrumentation, then it definitely has me fooled. Side one had hits, but I enjoyed side two more, very introspective and deep.

This was gorgeous. Ahead of it's time and a pioneer of the downbeat movement that followed. Music for the weary drive home after a weekend festival full of various festival style chemical enhancements. 9/10

I had not heard of this band before but found their music to be pretty soothing with good melodies.

Ethereal and trippy. I really enjoyed listening to this while I worked, I'd probably love cranking it with the windows down while I drive through a city at night.

Really really interesting music from Air - first time listening and I enjoyed it thoroughly. This album took me on a trip and genuinely made me feel like I was in a movie. Loved the vibe all throughout and will definitely add this to my library.

I've always liked this album a lot; it's a strange mixture of psychedelia and 90s indie sounds with a bit of Trip Hop thrown in. If I had to think of similar artists it would surprisingly include Hawkwind - a few of the tracks seem like almost direct lifts of Hawkwind. For example, "La femme d'argent" is basically "Golden Void" with a different tune. The indie elements are reminiscent of bands like Garbage and there's a bit of Portishead here and there, even a bit of Lemon Jelly now and again. It's not an album I return to often, more of a late night/ early morning chillout vibe that fits a particular situation. The first four tracks are the best and then it settles into a chilled out groove that slowly winds down until the end comes. It feels wrong awarding only 4 stars, but it's a very strong 4.

Very pleasant for background music and peaceful

Up to this, I'd been quite unimpressed by the electronic offerings from 1001 albums. This one finally felt worthy of inclusion on this list. Air does a great job of setting up and layering each track. I've been extremely impressed with the structure they utilize. New Star in the Sky was a particular delight. The chord structure was unexpected and really enjoyable.

Really enjoyed listening to this while working, nice to be introduced to mostly instrumental music that isn't what I'm used to (jazz/classical) and is also relaxing compared to something like house or DnB

The album kicks off well, with an interesting song, "La femme d'argent". Great groove, nice electric piano. Kind of Deodato meets Brian Auger and a dash of Kraftwerk. At its best, there's a smooth, jazz fusion feel. The longest song on the album, at just over 7 minutes. It takes a notable step down for "Sexy Boy", with a decidedly inorganic sound, and useless vocals which mostly repeat the title over and over and over and over. Not a bad groove, though. "All I Need" rebounds. When they use "real' bass it groves so much better, and the vocals this time are carrying actual vocals. It seems to bounce around between the two levels, really good, and OK. "Talisman" is great, "Remember " is meh.... etc. But there's a charm here, and I overall enjoyed this album. Overall, I'd probably go 7/10 or 7.5/10. But this is a 5 point scale, and integers only. I'm rounding up today, because this is really interesting, and several of the songs are solidly good. So that's 4/5

Loved this album. Really cruisy, melodic dance, disco, sometimes even old school like Burt Baccarat.

The very first 3 songs are the most popular ones of this album by Air. The rest of the album goes with much more chilling and relaxing tones... It is an easy listening for Sunday afternoon.

Owned this album and always liked several songs on it. After The Virgin Suicides, liked this band even more. Enjoyed listening to it again today. A relaxing, calming vibe drifts out from it and its damn near impossible not to relax while enjoying this.

Lovely stuff. Dreamy, French pop with loads of detail in the background. Beautiful synths and base lines, actual hooks and lots to focus in on. But zoom out and let the beauty wash over you.

The songs in this album were relaxing and expectedly faded into the background. A few of them had late 90s/early 00s sounds to them. I was getting reminded of transitions or club scenes from some dramas of that era

Fleeting yet significant for the trajectory of Air, Moon Safari captures exquisitely the essence of the music for films aura that permeates through this. It is no surprise that, afterwards, they actually went on to score soundtracks so maybe this is the calm before the storm. Chansons agréables pour passer le temps! The first side of this LP alone warrants a place for Air in this list. Smooth and retro-sounding instrumentals "La Femme d'Argent" and "Talisman" take the best of the flavors once explored by the likes of Burt Bacharach, Serge Gainsbourg and seventies Italian movie soundtracks. "All I Need" (featuring Beth Hirsch on vocals) is admittedly an understated ballad, but its central hook can illuminate the grimmest heart. And "Sexy Boy" and "Kelly Watch The Stars" are timeless bangers drawing from disco, 70s soft-rock and 90s 'French Touch' electro in a particularly catchy and idiosyncratic fashion, with hypnotic-yet-lively basslines, and equally hypnotic vocal lines on vocoder. The second side is also quite good, even if a little hit-or-miss sometimes: "Remember" goes to the same soundscapes explored in side one, but comes off a little short in comparison--both because of its tiny length and predictable contents. The acid-jazz/lounge undertones of ballad "You Make It Easy" (also featuring Beth Hirsch) sound "dated" in a way that's less elegant than in other parts of the LP, in spite of some impressive arragements towards its conclusion. "Ce matin-là" fares far better, as if it was a classic cut once composed by Ennio Morricone for a police procedural during his seventies heyday (what a memorable melody on the trumpet!). And so does "New Star In The Sky", even if's a touch too long and drowsy at times. Excellent piano-and-vocoder bridge, though, and nice subtle orchestral flourishes in its second part. As for "Le voyage de Pénélope", it's an apt closer displaying a fascinating jazzy synth line à la Vangelis, and it sums up all the different moods in the record. It's another short track, but it manages to be both relaxing and enticing, both "funky" and oneiric. Not so easy to pull off, all things considered. *Moon Safari* is a textbook 4/5-star album for this app (translating to a 9/10 grade for more general purposes). It never tries to impress you *a lot*, because it's too busy having fun first. And those records are often the most endearing ones for a lot of listeners. So it's nice that *some of them* find their way in such a list. I've really liked the Air albums that I've got on this list. I like Virgin Suicides better than this album, but this one works great as well. Their music is very atmospheric, and they play around a lot with the texture of the music to keep it from getting dull. 4/5

While parts became a bit repetitive for my taste on some tracks, it was well interesting enough to hold my attention. My only other prior experience was with the Virgin Suicides soundtrack, which was equally enjoyable. Would definitely be adding this to the queue to throw on while programming. Engaging from the first to last note. The sound is one minute taking you through space, the next it’s forcing you back down to Earth. There’s not much I would chance on this.

Good, solid album. Sexy Boy specifically really caught my attention.

First half was magical and transporting and gave me a real positive uplift. My interest did wane after Talisman- second side syndrome - but those first five songs are belters.

Absolutely love this album. I've loved for a long time...since the days of Napster when I first downloaded some of these songs. While the same chill vibe throughout, each of the songs are pleasantly different that it's such a lovely journey to traverse with Air.

Not my usual jam but I liked it.

French af. Took a couple of listens to warm up to, but after it clicked, it really clicked. You Make It Easy and Remember are highlights.

This has got to be up there in terms of a smooth start to an album. The first few minutes of the opening track are entrancing. The second song makes for a good follow up as well. I find that somewhere in the middle I lose my sense of place and my mind has surely wandered. But maybe that's okay on a Moon Safari — it doesn't detract from my impression of the record too much given that it always pulls me back in again on its own. It's both timeless and of its time.

This album is amazing. If Air just would have released La femme d'argent alone and did nothing else - they would still be remembered. Instead, we were blessed with the rest of this album. Highlights include La femme, All I Need, Kelly Watch the Stars, Ce matin-la and Le voyage de Penelope.

Incredible album - Been a favourite for years. Combining electronica/trip-hop. Many memorable and interesting songs. Would’ve rated 5/5, but in retrospect there are some slightly ‘duller moments’ in the middle of the album. Albums from massive attack/portishead just beat out. 4.2/5.

Great start with "La femme d'argent" and "Sexy Boy". I didn't really enjoy "All I Need" and "You Make It Easy". However, "Talisman" was another highlight for me. All in all, I really enjoyed listening to to the album.

Another album I already know! I’ve always thought of this album as being sort of an onomatopoeia: it sounds exactly like what a band named Air would write. The breathy vocals, the buoyant synths, the gentle arrangements. “Kelly Watch The Stars” was my introduction to Air, and remains my favorite song of theirs. “Sexy Boy” is also a bang up track. Overall, a great album, but Air will only ever be my second favorite French electronic music duo from the 90s.

I remember owning this album on CD and relisting to it, it still holds up. Let's face it, Air had so much influence in the downtempo genre and this is just an iconic album. Sure, I originally bought this album because Sexy Boy was in the 10 Things I Hate About You movie, but it did become a key album to help me expand out of my CCM childhood and my main focus towards alternative rock/metal.

Why did I like this?

Cool downtempo space pop electronica. Sets a nice chill vibe. Standout is "La femme d'argent".

This album exceeded my expectations. I loved the atmosphere created by all the songs. The sound design for the synths felt a little behind the curve; Depeche Mode sounded more advanced 20 years prior. But so many of these songs were really pretty and just fun to listen to!

This one is hard, because I've listened to it so much in my life, and especially in a very important and extreme period, and there's just no extricating from that. I'm not even going to try. The first song La Femme D Argent, well, if every song were as strong as this one, this would be an easy five. Just a fantastic, chill, composition with one of the best basslines out there. Unfortunately some of the other songs feature soul-lite singer, who, while not bad, nudge this one out of the realms of perfection. Still, one of the most important albums of my life.

Interesting sounds, but also good background music. Would probably be a 5 if I liked this genre more.

very chill, I dig it

One of my favorite albums at the time. It's mellow French synthpop with dreamy landscapes.

This album has a bit of an interesting lo-fi vibe to it. It's a bit quirky, and I like that. Somehow it also sounds older than it is, which you don't see too often. 'Sexy Boy' is such a cool track, and the ones with Beth Hirsch are also especially good. I also like 'Ce martin-lá - From "L'uomo in più"'. Not all songs are great, but it keeps a quite high bar still, so this will have to be a weak 4.

A breath of fresh air (hehe)! I had completely forgotten about this album. A childhoods friend's dad had this on CD and tried, unsuccessfully, to tell us how good it was when we were kids. I've returned to the album every once in a while but it must have been 10+ years since i listened to it last. I feel every time i listen to it and the older I get the better this is. It has a laid back jazzy groove, like if someone took Massive Attack or Daft Punk and told them to chill. I actually prefer the instrumental tracks over the ones with vocals with "La femme d'argent and "Talisman" being personal favourites. It looses the last star as I think I need to be in a special mood to enjoy it and a few of the tracks are not that interesting.

Ohhh, what a great album! This is why I'm doing this project. The music reminds me of Daft Punkt, albeit a bit more on the mellow side. This album contains great tracks in abundance it just loses a little bit of steam in the second half. Never mind, this is easily 4/5.

It's still sexy and fun and great party background music. I don't think I'd put it on to LISTEN to per se, but it's wonderfully done for what it is.

A bit of a grower, but still feels right. A huge relief to hear an actually decent electronic album after several swings and misses.

At first I thought this was nothing more than upscale elevator music, something they would play at the Ritz Carlton. Maybe the music they play when you’re on hold with American Express while they search up fraudulent charge claims on your platinum card. But then it evolved into something special. Maybe it just fit my mood for the day perfectly, but I felt a wave of calmness wash over me while listening. The type of calm where you’re floating in the clouds on a plane, looking down at all the tiny people and buildings below you. One where you realize how insignificant you are, but feel bigger than everything in that same instance. You close your eyes and feel content with your life, thankful for everything you’ve been through and all that you’ve accomplished.

Something magical about Air. Deserves all the stars for Sexy Boy which is near to a perfect track. Everything sounds fresh and I was glad to give this a new listen 20.

Well Sexy Boy is a tune. The rest of the album holds up as well. A unique sound; almost trance-like electronica with catchy lyrical hooks - it's presence on the list makes sense. I'm likely to return to this at some point. Highlight has got to be Sexy Boy lol.

I don’t think I’ve come across Air before. Apple Music says they are dance music which has me intrigued. Some if the song titles are in French so I’m assuming they’re from France. Let’s listen and find out how the music sounds! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Sexy Boy, Ce Matin-là This was an album where I didn’t want it to finish. It was such a nice sound, somewhere between dance and smooth soul music. The whole album is around 45 minutes, which is a very typical length, but the time seemed to fly by. I’m really glad to have found this album, and will definitely be giving it more time over the coming days.

These guys keep showing up on various playlist compilations for years. Never sat and listened to the album through. Glad I did.

I knew I would love this album as soon as I saw the Mike Mills artwork on the cover. From that I was expecting something like Bosanova Beastie Boys or a Funkier Air, not the dreamlike french pop/soundscapes. Probably my least favourite song is Sexy Boy which in retrospect is tacky and doesn't gel with the rest of the songs on the album

Two electronic albums in a row which is a bit out of my comfort zone. I tend to be overly critical I think so going to try not to do that today. Not sure what exactly it is that I like about this album, but I do like it a lot. It’s a downtempo electronic album with a pretty slow pace, which is a little more my speed generally. This type of music can get repetitive sounding sometimes, but this album was able to keep things interesting throughout. My only real negative is a few of the songs had lyrics in a strange autotuned male voice that was a little annoying to me. Otherwise really enjoyed it though, would listen again. Favorite song: La femme d’argent Other: Sexy Boy, All I Need, Talisman, Ce matin-là, Le voyage de Pènèlope

One of the top ambient / chillout albums from a group that have released some absolutely brilliant tracks over the years. This album is perfect for so many scenarios, but mostly sitting in the sun with a drink in hand!

Background music that turned out to be a surprisingly good listen for me. A little out there at times but that's never a true negative for me. Probably a 3.5 here but I'm feeling generous today and will round up. Some album is going to take the hit for that as I regress to the mean on my ratings. Oh well, so it goes.

There’s a general air of detachment to a lot of Air’s work that often alienates me. That’s not the case here on their first album. It succeeds (in my mind) precisely because it’s warm and inviting, not cold and sterile like their later work.

Pretty solid electronic album. While nothing really stood out, there wasn't a bad track on here. 4/5.

Reading the album title I was pleasantly surpised and expecting lyrics about big game hunting on the moon. I was imagining large prey running through moon dust and jumping across large craters trying to escape an Apollo rocket containing the two artists holding a net for catching butterflies. After finishing the album I’m a bit disappointed. The lyrical content is not what I expected. The album only contains a few songs about astronomy. Though I like the lyrics of Sexy Boy and wouldn’t be surpised if these are written with my humble person in mind. The music on the record is mellow, but entertaining electronica. All in all it’s one small pleasure for this man, but a great addition to the 1001 list.

Retrofictionism justifies the moon reference. I doubt there's a bad time to put this music on, drift out for a time, voices coming to prompt a smile but ultimately leaving other sound preeminent.

This album is completely ahead of its time. Absolutely solid production, and ear worm tracks great for testing out a new pair of headphones. The opener, La femme d'argent, brings you right in with a ripping bass line and catchy hook. Throughout the album, you get complete Daft Punk vibes. Must've been that 90s French music scene air everyone was breathing. Some tracks like Remember feel a little too B-side, but overall, I'd throw on this record after a long day at work to just mellow out to when I'm not quite up for Daft Punk or Justice energy.

This is chill-hop before anyone conceived of iPods. This is 20+ years ahead of its time. This is a really cool find in 2023 from the dark ages of 1998. 4.5/5!

That was great, I remember listening to Air probably like 10 years ago, and this reminded me how much I like it. It was giving me Royksopp vibes.

I listed to this album a bunch in college. Still really enjoy it! Mix of down-tempo Detective Barbie-esque tracks and a few absolute bangers. The songs with the female vocalist are pretty forgettable though.

I liked it, but it was too hectic, I think the songs were not in the same tune as what I was doing at the moment. I will listen to it again, another time.

Love this album. My uncle gave me a burnt copy of this CD for my birthday when I was like 10/11 (2004/5). It complements the Mylo album. Nice break from 70s rock.

An insight into French electronica and it's one of those records you'd play during those hot summer days or chill summer nights. I don't know much about electronica in general but this was a pleasant listen. FAVORITE SONGS: La femme d'argent, Sexy Boy, All I Need, Kelly Watch the Stars, Ce Matin Là, and Le Voyage De Pénélope The other songs not listed are ok or have to grow on me. Either way, it's a good album to vibe to.

I found this album early last summer it's been on repeat since.

Jazzy, vibey music with an electronic pulse. But there’s live instrumentation as often as there are electronics — there’s even an orchestra on some tracks! Only a few songs sound like a product of the 90’s. I don’t think I would have guessed the time period of lot of these songs if I didn’t already know. Nice chill laid back album. "All I Need (feat. Beth Hirsch)" sounds very Portishead-y which is cool. Moments of Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk, and even more Portishead throughout the album made me a happy listener. I really enjoyed it. It's super laid back and one of the easier albums on this list to put on and flat out enjoy.

Gallic cool.

How many bands/acts are more appropriately named than "Air" is? The name fits them to a T - the music is airy and light and non-threatening (mostly) instrumental music that still has a tiny slice of mysterious progression to it. And it all does sound so French :D The biggest negative for me is that I don't like the vocal songs much; they almost detract from the vibe which one can easily lose themselves in. This is the kind of mood and sound I like from downbeat electronic music. There's a sameness to a lot of it to be sure but I feel like I can play Air in almost any setting or mood. Feeling like I may not put this on as much as most 4s but it still feels worthy. 7/10 4 stars.

This stuff doesn't usually float my boat. These guys always managed to find a way to keep me engaged in it. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Loungemuziek, dat was helemaal hip rond het millennium. Wie weet als een tiener dit over 40 jaar luistert, dat hij hier net zo veel van begrijpt als ik nu van sommige psychedelische hipstermuziek van de boomers. Maar ik kan hier prima van genieten, lekker chill. Al is All I Need een beetje een oorwurm.

Some whispered vocals, airy synth washes and gently burbling bass. Some a bit slow, some with a bit more of a pulse. The whole thing is so much more than the sum of its parts and - cliche alert - it's all held together with a great sense of style.

This was right up my alley. I can't believe I've never heard of this album or Air before. I really liked the instrumentation and vocals of each song. It was really enjoyable to listen to.

Hot damn, this album. I knew I had heard Air before but I could not have described their sound before hearing this album. Turns out, I did at the very least know their radio hit from the Virgin Suicides soundtrack, but this album has a sound I immediately fell in love with. To me, it almost feels like chill hop before chill hop was a thing. Similar to Daft Punk but more jazzy, less funky and less repetitive. Nearly every song had me feeling good vibes like grooving to the Animal Crossing music while hanging out on my island. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is a few songs where the vocals kicked in really ruined the vibe for me. I think I would have liked it better as a pure instrumentals album even though some of the vocals are fine.

Very nice discovery. The album but also the band. Very calm and melodic songs, very enjoyable yet sometimes too slow but defintly some songs to add to a good mix. The synth is top notch and I really enjoyed the songs without vocals. Some Daft Punk electro 2000 vibe sometime that make it a touch redundant but still greatly done. Solid 4/5

You make it easy is beautiful, this album is amazingly relaxing. some songs have some slight drag, but this looking like a 4. I'm finding the distinction between 3 and 4 very difficult. 3 seems to bad, but 4 seems quite high.

This was a big surprise. So musical, laidback but inviting. It's drenched with '70s feel. Then it steals that drum sound from Do It Again. Classic!

I have not had the best luck with electronica albums on here, so this was a much needed change of pace. The songs may be a little longer than they really need to be sometimes, but at least they're not consistently seven minutes long like other 90's electronica. The songs are enjoyable and they sound interesting, progressing just enough to keep my interest throughout the song. My favourite songs were Sexy Boy and You Make it Easy.

Know this very well. It is a big warm bath of unchallenging melodic electronica. Perfect for a summer evening. Yeah it's a bit too nice and feature on hundreds of chill out compilations but is very lovely. 4
