This entire album sounded like a mix of movie soundtracks, but I was still into it?
First track was a killer, from there music stayed pretty solid while vocals were a mixed bag at best.

I had this on as background music. Quite slow paced. I prefer the songs with lyrics, they seem more interesting to me. A mixture of soft, lullaby-like sounds and futuristic, electronic sounds.

Really fantastic album, enjoyed it a lot. Kind of reminiscent of Portishead in the downtempo instrumentals with the occasional Daft Punk-esque vocoded vocals. Didn't know what to expect going in but it was surprisingly enjoyable. 3.5⭐️

Different, nice, alternative, chill
I really enjoyed this one! Abstract and instrumental like other offerings but unlike Ágætis Byrjun which was more dreamlike and trance inducing, each piece on this album had a real energy and momentum about it that I really liked. I’ll come back to this one again I am sure!
Lounge music which is okay as a background filler. Might be enjoyable to switch between the conversation you have, and the varied basslines (melody and tone) with some upright, some electric, and lots of synth bass everywhere.

For a band called Air this slaps. I like the vibe. A couple of these are kinda dull and a few are just good grooves so even if theyre repeated a thousand times its chill.
good for atmosphere/ambience but hard for my brain to listen to without other stimulus, pretty fun stuff though this is like perfect background music and i mean that in a good way, maybe 3.5?

Interesting, “ambient” music. If I owned a coffee shop or bookstore I would absolutely play this. But not my style for daily listening. I enjoyed the bass lines in Many of the songs.

These guys are fun and cool without really trying... The exact opposite of most British musicians. This is a great album. All of the songs are great, and whether you like it or not everyone else you do like likes this so you still like it. And, if you do like this but haven't followed these guys since, check out Pocket Symphony, it's also really good.

I've listened to this one far too often over the years to be impartial. These tracks are part of my chemical makeup by now. Fun fact: When I visited France in 1996 (about a year and a half before this album dropped), I bought me a stuffed monkey on the streets of Paris as a travel companion. Said monkey is one and the same as the star of the 'Sexy Boy' video and, coincidentally, sitting next to me as I write this review. Indeed, what a wonderful travel companion he has been!
This was a solid listen. Nothing really memorable outside of sexy boy. Which I will give this an additional point for the nostalgia of that song alone.

My favorite album by a group I quite like. Just a great vibe all around. A solid 4, brought up to a 5 due to a great surround sound Dolby Atmos mix on Apple Music.

Not quite sure where I would fit this music into my rotation. It is chill electronica pop. Like a softer daft punk. A collection of soft, melodic beats and a mixing of synth and electric instruments. It just doesn’t scratch an itch for me, but if I were waiting on a plane and this was the background music as i found my seat? Perhaps…

Very chill and psychedelic electronic music, and perfect listening fare for this rainy night. This is the kind of music I could easily listen to for hours, especially the instrumental tracks.

I like this a lot better than I did “Virgin Suicides.” At least, according to my review. I don’t really remember it. I didn’t really dig “You Make it Easy,” but the rest was great.
Good chill music to get stuff done, will definitely be on rotation at work. Doesn't hurt that I picture 10 Things I Hate About You during the second track.

Very chill… almost TOO chill.
Title track kinda long. Sexy boy chorus kinda sucks good but kinda bland instrumentals, wasn’t what I was expecting, dunno if that’s good or bad the tone of the music switches a lot
Better than the Virgin Suicides soundtrack, and I think this rightly reflects what is good and strong about the band. Nice vibe and groove for its genre. I hate to admit it, but “Sexy Boy” (single) is a fun track.
This was a revelation for me. I have already started looking into more AIR albums. Perfect grooves to relax to. Not soporific, but also not Manic. Something to chill to but still get stuff done. This porridge is just right for me. It's finds like this that make this site a daily must visit.
The warm blanket of an album from a time in my life of great enjoyment and no responsibilities. Sure it's a bit hackneyed now but it's still just a wistful soundtrack to nothing in particular and I like it. Ahhh "Ce matin là", it certainly is.

It’s got something, and they use all the right vintage instruments and tools - but completely drowned out by the elevator music they made. This is what they play when you’re put on hold calling a cool company. 3/10

En del fine melodier. På sitt beste får du en Bowie / Ultravox stemning av lydbildet. Enkelte ganger bruker de synthlyder som mer forstyrrer lydbildet. Høres ut som forprogramerte fra et billig casio keyboard. Beste låt «All I need».
Downtempo electronica out of France... really like it... good songs are good songs no matter the genre... so chill and groovy... Bass playing is standout...
From memory (hearing it a few times maybe 20 years ago), this was nice background music that wasn’t really worth a proper listen. On reflection, pretty much the same. There’s more going on sonically than I gave it credit for, hence a 3 star review rather than 2, but I wouldn’t go back and listen again.
Started out strong - I like the sound, especially the bass parts. Unfortunately several later tracks are unbearably drippy which caused my opinion to diminish.
As background music goes, so much more satisfying than the Eno.
I think it's safe to say that ambient electronic music has no place in my record collection.

Very soothing start Kinda meh
Albums like this reinvigorate this project for me. After weeks of shitty rock band after shitty rock band (looking at you Eagles) there is finally an album showing me something I’ve never heard before. Awesome sound and cool as hell concept.
I try not to touch the meta of this thing as I go. It’s not fair – or even particularly interesting – to reflect on what I do or don’t think should be in a 1001 list. I’m thankful someone(s) has tried. I must briefly break my own rule for Air’s “Moon Safari”, as I feel I’m being harsh for the silliest reason. Quite whether it “belongs” here is totally beside the point (if it’s here on this curated list, it belongs). What I’m struggling with is a realisation – a realisation that I’ve been regarding this exercise, without any invitation to, as a “challenge”. And as a result, in encountering an album this completely unchallenging I feel somehow ripped off; suddenly lurching toward hyperboles of the order “who on Earth could ever have any sort of feeling about any of this (except ‘Sexy Boy’ which is and always has been a bop)?” On another level, the meta thing feels apt. “Moon Safari” sort of does feel like music about music – there’s a curatorial zeal that sits across the songs, so slickly produced and pristinely packaged. I’m hopscotching through a musical museum, being smoothly transported through a range of fleeting feelings by a guide who’s achingly clever, aloof, cool (“French”, in short). There’s nothing wrong with it. It doesn’t need to be a challenge. It can just be, and that’s great by me.
Not super impressed.
Better than Coldplay
Lo-fi, electro, triphop with nothing amazing about it. Kind of the summary of the genre in general. I listen to this kind of stuff for several hours a month while really needing to focus at work. This music has the ability to put me in a great zone, but honestly for no other reason then it is simple rhythmically and nothing that really deviates from the path. This album accomplishes what it sets out to do (in my opinion) of being something you can set in the background a vibe without really knowing there’s music being played. I like this album and will be listening again soon when I need to get in the zone, but this isn’t anything amazing a feels out of place here. I think the Robert Dimery wants the reader to see the best of the best, and game changing albums in as many genres as he deems fit, but this genre isn’t anything “you must hear before you die.” 6.2/10 #39/1001
Delightfully French space age-y chill music
Really liked this. Had that SBS Chill vibe. Ambient but not simplistic. Listened to this while on a road trip and liked it so much that I played it three times. No real track stood out for me it was the whole vibe. It shaped my mood rather than demanding my attention. Nicely done.
This has to be one of the most perfectly named bands. Their music always feels like it’s just floated in from the ether.

Heard it before. For some reason I didn't remember anything from the album except for Sexy Boy. But oh man, was it worth listening to the album again. I definitely didn't appreciate it enough the first time round 3/5
I think there was a moment where I felt like I was having an out of body experience but for the most part this was remarkably unremarkable. Something about it needed better production. It was too many sounds and not enough music.

Already had Track 3 "All I Need (feat Beth Hirsch)" liked and saved before. That song is pretty good. I didn't really care for the other songs. Overall, most of the tracks on the album were sort of boring. The instrumental tracks weren't anything particularly interesting and I didn't like the other tracks with vocals (the robot filter was rather flop). I'm feeling a 2/5
Not sure what to make of the songs on this album. I would have assumed they were just AI generated filler sounds.

This instantly sets a very specific vibe, which I love. I do prefer the instrumental bits, as I'm not a huge fan of the vocal style, but overall I love the chill and nostalgic feeling this has. Reminds me of video game music as well.

Never listened to the full album before, but it turned out I knew more of it than I expected (i.e. way more than Sexy Boy). I ended up knowing 5 of the tracks and liking all of them. 4/5 would definitely put on when its a warm summer day and I'm sat in the garden.

Lovely album. Everything sounds so pleasing - the tones of the instruments, the vocals. Nothing is discordant but nothing is boring or predictable either. It's not my usual genre but I can't imagine enjoying low key electronicy jazz-influenced pop more than this.

I was bored.
This album was quite the rollercoaster. Every other song I went from strongly disliking it to finding myself saying “hey this is really nice.” I think that boils down to me not being a fan of electronic music overall. The robotic sounds and sci-fi like noises through a few of the songs didn’t do much for me. That being said, this album does have a couple of hidden gems.
Good and calming nice Record. Will definetely get a spin on a warm summer evening. (3.5/5.0)

Nice atmosphere created here. Certainly not for every occasion, but it's definitely an enjoyable vibe. The single "Sexy Boy" is still the best song, but it's a good record to have in one's collection.
I did not like this. Recognised that one song from 10 Things I Hate About You, which is one of my favourite films of all time, but other than that, I don't think I find this particular type of 90s electronica enjoyable. Will not be listening again.

An album I already knew. Some nice songs. Added a couple to my regular playlist.
This will have been my first time listening to Air, the French electronic duo of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. The two originally studied architecture and mathematics before starting to play music and forming a group together. They got their foot in the door by making remixes for other acts before dropping their first EP, then a few years later, this debut album. My first observation with Moon Safari was how readily apparent their influences were in Kraftwerk and Serge Gainsbourg. The chilled-out electronic compositions with the supple bass, piano accompaniment, and light synthesizer flourishes take on this ethereal, almost mystique feel. For a few tracks like the talk box on "Sexy Boy" and "Kelly Watch the Stars", as well as the contributions of Beth Hirsch on "All I Need" and "You Make It Easy", female vocals are used to add a level of intimacy with the simplified lyricism that invokes this sense of longing for that romantic connection. My favorite moments on this album were probably the pulsating groove of the Moog on "Kelly Watch the Stars" paired with the theremin motif, followed by the crescendo from the spaced-out piano line and low-end bass into the string-accompanied soul groove on "Talisman". I'll admit there is this nagging sense in me that this album peaked in the first half. That's not to say the second half is bad. Rather, it sounded like the best and most realized compositions happened to be placed near the front, leaving the back for more atmospheric pieces that continue the vibe, albeit to a slightly lesser degree. Still, I was genuinely impressed with my excursion on this Moon Safari. Air put out a strong debut that helped pave the way for the downtempo genre. It's worth checking out.

Is this the soundtrack to Oceans 11? Are Danny Ocean and the boys about to rob a casino? That was my first reaction when I started Moon Safari by Air. (I liked the Oceans’ movies, by the way) Speaking of movies, I feel like I heard Sexy Boy in one but can’t place it right now. That’s gonna bug me. I’ve got to look it up. Hold on. *playing Air for hold music* (See what I did there? I know, it’s not that clever) It was 10 Things I Hate About You! That’s where I heard Sexy Boy! Glad I cleared that up. Anyway… Moon Safari is a decent album. It was a fine listen. I don’t mind some downtempo electronica, but, at best, this is probably just background music. Maybe a late night hang out vibe? I could see that. I will add this to my library for just such an occasion. And if I’m being honest, I could see this album growing on me more over time. It does have that potential. For the here and now though, Moon Safari by Air will get a 3 rating from me. I have the sudden urge for a crepe. 3/5

Strong nostalgia five on this one - it's all mixed up with the summer of the lovey honeymoon phase of my first serious relationship. Fave tracks - "La Femme D'Argent" for kicking things off, let's say, but any of these tracks have the power to transport me back to those times.
One of my favourites, when that first song starts you know exactly where you are and what you are getting. Love it, glad a new generation are getting to discover it through the list

I remember this from the Napster days. The first 75% (or so) of this album is made up of bangers. Then after one or two forgettable songs, there are some more bangers. 5 stars for creating a killer vibe!

Sure, nostalgia plays a part in the score here, but this is album is nonetheless a start-to-finish banger. I've listened to it so many times, but still want more. Wonderful.

Yeah I had the privilege to be alive in the time when all this slow, whispery chill-out electronica was popular and people loaded up on Air and Royksopp CDs for their ubercool house parties. It was perfectly nice. It's not got the cutting edge of a Portishead or Massive Attack but it's stood the test of time and I've enjoyed a bit of nostalgie, aujourd'hui. Kelly Watch The Stars is still an all-time favourite, especially the fantastic Moog Cookbook remix. Seek it out and thank me later.

Cool and mellow electronic album. The instrumental songs are better than the songs with vocals. I didn’t like the singer.
Chill album where none of the tracks grab me but, it’s a great vibe to have in the background.
Iconic album. I listened to it once with friends after a listening of "Mezzanine" by Massive Attack and we concluded that it's like a positive/opmistic version of that record. "Sexy Boy" and "All I Need" are two of my favorite electronic songs. more of a 4,75 but rounded up.
This wasn't really my thing. A couple of OK songs but lyrics like "Sexy boy" or "Kelly watch the stars" repeated 50 times aren't lyrics.
Daytime electronic music, nice for getting going in the morning. I especially liked La Femme d'argent, Sexy Boy (really great song) and Talisman.

A good album that's absolutely front loaded with memorable songs, starting with "La Femme D'argent", "Sexy Boy", "All I Need", and "Kelly Watch The Stars" is definitely a way to hook any unsuspecting listener. Then it just settles in for a breezy yet cozy back half.
Not something I would normally listen to but it works well as background music. 3 stars or C-.

This is one of those albums I listened to and was like yes!! I found something that I never heard of and will probably listen to again. It’s not great by any means, but solid keys, symphonic harmonies with electric tones…. Similar to music I’ve heard before but with a twist. 3.5 is how I feel, 4 is generous and I’m feeling generous. Ce matin-lá is a lovely tune

This is #day217 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here’s to some evening cocktail music, right? If I’d listened to this in the morning like I usually do with albums in this challenge, I might’ve called it "morning cocktail music," but who drinks cocktails in the morning? Well, anyway... Somehow, I ended up listening to this record later into the night. And, of course, I’m lying when I say "somehow." It’s just that I was busy working in the morning—because, you know, that’s what you do when you’re older. By a lucky coincidence, though, the music ended up fitting perfectly with the time of day. Even luckier still, the album is called Moon Safari, so it kind of hints at the nighttime—or, you know, the very early morning, when you might still catch a glimpse of a crescent or full moon in the sky. It’s a beautiful record. "La femme d'argent," "Sexy Boy," and "All I Need" rang a bell immediately, but there are also other great moments here. A downtempo, dreamy, spacey synth odyssey is probably the best way to describe this album. Or, Kraftwerk marrying Pink Floyd marrying Brian Eno. I'm giving it a 5 out of 5. No wonder I rated the Virgin Suicides score a 4 back in the day. Looking forward to #day218.

Via La France! Completely surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. Always heard them in bits and pieces. This would’ve been a great CD in the car in the 90s
Electronic music, quite melodious but nothing special, just pleasant background music - like a film/TV soundtrack.
A beautiful and calming album that mixes together genres of electronica and pop.
Like air, there’s not much here. It’s listenable, usually inoffensive, and ultimately forgettable. It’s almost the perfect definition of a “2,” but sometimes it verges close to a “1” for repetitiveness & lack of creativity.

Like it a lot, hints of daft punk, Radiohead and such. Vocals aren’t quite to my liking but the instrumentals are fun and keep you listening.

Very evocative of a different time. It's very easy to listen to, quite soothing. I was listening on youtube and after the album finished the next couple of autoplay items were other Air tracks - and I didn't even notice the album had ended. It came get a bit beige and samey, but I would happily listen again.

Something I’ve circled many times in my musical lifetime yet never fully sat down to listen to, until now. Vastly prefer the instrumental stuff to the stuff with vocals, as it feels like a stand-in for a movie score (hello Sofia Coppola’s Virgin Suicides) as opposed to some adult-contemporary, ‘90s French neu-pop (hello track 3, “All I Need.”) I do realize that this record is a big deal and I’ll be spending tonight digging into the context of “why,” but it didn’t gel with me overall! I can still get it being on an essential list, but it’s not on mine.

This is one of those albums that has been suggested to me many times but streaming services because it's adjacent to other groups I like. However I never seem to quite fully get into it. It is close enough to other things I like that it feels like I should like it for sure but yet...I almost want to say it's too light? Still though I like the overall genre and appreciate the sound so still a 3 star for me.
Not the right album for a quiet night at home. I could see before or after activity so not an every time anytime album.

At university in the late 1990s, I had a CD player with a timer function, and I used Moon Safari as my alarm - the first track fades in with rain noises so it’s good for waking up gently. Hearing it again made me feel like I was late for a lecture, but also reminded me why I liked it so much in the first place, and not just because it’s perfect for snoozing when you’re a student who struggles to drag her lazy arse out of bed.

Holy Cow! I LOVE this album so much. This is perfect for chill listening during my workday. I added most of the album to a playlist I have for this and it may become a go-to album for me. I'm going to have to explore more of their music!

Highlights: la femme d'argent, Talisman, Ce matin-la. In a nutshell: un voyage spatial fantastique A fantastic space voyage. Sweeping, dreamy, sexy. It is front loaded, but stick with it. You need to hear the full album at least once before you die, because Moon Safari gives you an idea on how electronica evolved in the late 90s (same can be said with fellow French duo Daft Punk). Overall: 8/10
I enjoyed sexy boy and thought it was an indication that this album would be an enjoyable experience but everything after that was mindless generic boops and beeps

Doors are great quintessential Doors. Favorite song is on here but prefer Morrison hotel more. The music defined an era in a lot of ways. One of them being a white artist garnering the fame over his black contemporaries.

L'introduction de partie chantées (voix naturelle ou avec un Vocoder) dans les pistes suivantes n'amène pas grand chose, j'aurais préféré des morceaux totalement instrumentaux. Globalement une bonne découverte, que je ré-écouterais probablement mais qui ne rejoindra pas ma collection. =>3/5

I was hoping this would be as good as the one Air song I know (which isn't on this album) and it really was! Such a nice chilled vibe to it, love it when tackling this list pays off!

Like it - breezy & mellow, elegant
The first track of an album is very important. It sets the mood for the rest of the album and needs to hook the listener in. A bad first song can have a negative impact on the remainder of the album and it can be hard for it to recover. This album seemed to be nearly an example of that. La Femme d’argent is a weak opening track. It’s a seven minute slog that would be too boring for the Weather Channel. As it went on, I feared that the rest of the album was going to be the same thing. Fortunately, that was far from the case. Past the first song, the rest of the album is a great mix of quirky and calm. I especially liked the Beth Hirsch collabs the best. I think I’m starting to like this downtempo form of electronic music. I had Play by Moby generated earlier in the week and I had pretty much the same feelings for this album. Just some smooth electronics focusing more on establishing a vibe than keeping up a beat. Honestly, if it weren’t for the first song, this would be near perfect. Thankfully, this album proved itself more as it went along. Favorite track: All I Need Other hits: Sexy Boy, Remember, Kelly Watch the Stars, You Make It Easy, Ce Matin Là, New Star in the Sky

In my opinion, this album is the best downtempo electronica ever made. Maybe you’re not in the mood for downtempo electronica or maybe downtempo electronica just isn’t for you. But, if you are ever in a place and time where you’re in the mood for this type of music, this is as good as it gets. An absolute classic of an album.

smooth chill vibes. Could be very soothing in the right context, but not so much my thing.
Very mellow electronic sounds
This is a classic of nineties chill ambient electronica. Definitely not my kind of music, but I listened to this before because it was very popular. The music washes over you with various electronic and acoustic soundscapes. Sometimes some soft vocals, and a persistent muted beat in the background. Some songs try to add some variation but it’s still pretty minimal. It all sounds like a movie soundtrack. Thing is with a movie soundtrack there’s the movie to keep you interested and here there’s nothing like that. It’s all very relaxing but kinda boring. Giving it three stars since it’s good for the genre and I think it's considered an important work and not actively offensive. I just don’t like the genre.

I love this album, Air is one of my favorites. Very chill music but still catchy and sonically deep. I personally prefer Talkie Walkie, maybe because it was the first I'd heard, but Moon Safari is more cohesive and meditative. Awesome album.
