Solid pop songs, but contains filler.

Classic pop. Just when you think a song is a differ, back it comes with a massive chorus.

This is one really excellent pop music album. Who knew? 4 🌟

All three singles are genuinely brilliant. What is most surprising is how much more of the album could have been! One track sounds like New Order. It's a really good pop album.

As over-produced, factory-made pop goes, this wasn't bad. Enjoyed the album tracks over the singles, probably due to the overplay of the latter.

I quite liked this. Surprised myself! I think what adds to be liking it more is the fact that I know the Ryan Adam cover album version pretty well.

Hay que aceptar el pop cuando es pop bueno y este es del mejor que hay. Taylor Swift (al menos en esta etapa) es tremendamente buena y si eso fuera poco tiene la mano de los suecos Max Martin y Shellback que lo que tocan lo hacen oro pop. Su voz es linda y bien cuidada, sus letras y tonadas tienen esos momentos pegajosos que se te quedan el día completo, totalmente relatable para su público (obviamente no para nosotros rayando los 40, pero sí para escuinclas de su edad para abajo) y con momentos altos y bajos para llenar todos los apetitos. Pretty good pop album, maybe a track or two too long

Sorry in advance you guys, but this album deserves a 5 in my eyes. As far as pop goes this is likely one of the least annoying or repetitive ones of the bunch and many of these songs were ones I grew up hearing during the peak of my childhood. Yes T Swizzle wrote them all about her exes, but they are catchy and not as bad as most pop songs. Also I hate her country vibe albums and this one is not that

Better than Elvis Costello

I had one of her more recent folkish album before this one on the list and I must admit that I prefered 1989. It's full of hits, there's a certain diversity between the songs nad its quite catchy. A pretty good modern pop album that deserves its praises.

Well done and nicely produced pop album. I appreciate this material much more than his recent folk album. It's not my type, but it's good. A bit generic though, absolutely nothing stands out from the rest of current pop music. 3 stars will do it.

A decent pop album with some major hits. The album has its main theme of love affairs and feelings T Swift has about them. And then there’s just generic pop hits thrown in the middle. As an album it’s ok. This does better with just the few good single pieces. 5.8/10

I mean… what do you want me to say? Just absolute pop heaters. Not my favorite version of Taylor, but to say that this album doesn’t pop off would be a lie. Wanted to give a 4 but think that’d be unfair.

First time I’ve willingly listened to T Swift. The songs are actually ok, but feels too overplayed for me to properly enjoy. 3/10

Wow! Didn't expect to see this. Wife and all 3 daughters like her and this album is full of hits all of which she's written herself and has 19 tracks running over an hour too so what more can you say? On the flip side it could be argued some songs are insipid and poppy but then the same thing could be levelled at the many of the 1000 albums. I think it comes down to a question of taste and percieved integrity in what people listen to. I'd rather listen to Joy Division and that's just my taste but I really like a lot of these songs and think she's immensely talented.

This is a very generic pop album. I remember hating shake it off when it came out but I never listened to it all until now. Welcome to NY was trash. Some songs are ok like Blank Space and Style but overall I didn’t find much impressive about this album. My friend who is a huge Taylor swift fan said she thinks this is her worst album

In hindsight I can see why this was necessary step in Taylor Swift’s journey. At the time it was released I thought that this “pop” disc was different from many of the pop releases at the time because of the presence of more observational lyrics. However, the focus on synthesizers didn’t always work for me. Also, the hodge-podge of producers (which has become, and still are, a trend) coupled with multiple songwriting partners results in a lack of cohesiveness.

Really good pop music. Interesting to hear this in its original form as I only know the Ryan Adams cover of this entire album. Now I have to listen to that so I can hear what he was hearing. Her more recent albums are much more mature sounding, but this is fun stuff.

I liked this album more each time I heard it. These melodies are just so goddamn catchy and the production was really fantastic. I know its one of the more recent albums but everything soudned so crisp and clean which was nice on my ears. The songwriting was very good too. It felt sincere and was very accessible. "Blank Space" and "Shake it Off" were clever self-referential tracks where Taylor Swift acknowledges and mocks what others say about her. "Style" had some funky guitar parts and built its groove in a way that I really liked. I do think the album starts to wilt towards the end and a different tracklist might have fixed this.

Bizarrely, to me and my friends, I own not one, but TWO albums by Ms Swift. This is not, nor will it ever be, one of them. I guess if I was a 14 year old girl I'd like it, but I'm not. So I don't.

I'm being held hostage as I write this review, so criticisms are limited in scope. Without choice, I've actually listened to all of Swift's albums dozens of times each, and honestly, this one is not only her best, but is a landmark album that deserves to be on this list. I love 80s synthpop, so it's only natural for me to appreciate what this album has to offer. The hooks are in every track... each track could be its own single. The production is top of the notch; Swift's style compliments the synthy overlays and echoey effects that make each track sound very clean. With modern pop music over the past couple decades that have placed a particular emphasis on the singer's voice, you can hear in "Style" how well the music stands on its own but brings out the best in her vocals, avoiding the pitfalls of generic pop music. It's a coherent experience from start to finish. The mood is optimistic and often goofy, used perfectly for a fun dance experience. I do agree that there isn't much room for breathers on the album. Sure, in the first half, "Out of the Woods" has more wistful vibe, and "All You Had To Do Was Stay" has calmer verses reminiscent of Red, but the choruses are still loud and overwhelming. "I Wish You Would" probably comes closest, which is necessary between the cinematic dance craze "Shake It Off" and the heavy beat hip-hop "Bad Blood" (followed by the grand romance "Wildest Dreams"). Last three tracks are what we needed, a really quiet and prolonged finish. A less artsy Kate Bush. Even "I Know Places" doesn't get too wild to make the audience uncomfortable. "Clean" is a satisfying ending that reminds me of the closer "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" of the synthpop classic Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret.

Why would I give this a 5? Modern pop music sucks, right? Taylor Swift sucks too, right? So what if those modern-twisted '80s inspired hooks are catchy? Most of the tracks so overplayed listening to it again hurts right? And the moving atmospheric tracks such as "Out of the Woods" and "Wildest Dreams"? Erm... Not that good right? I mean Taylor is probably not the first one who did that. Oh, and the second half are pretty boring already, huh? So what if those soft tracks are so goood? It ultimately drags the album... I'm only rating this album a very little bit too high because nostalgia. Yes. Those nights with my kid siblings. Watching MTV. The smell of fried potatoes. The way pasta compliments the taste of softdrinks. Father going home from work. It's only nostalgia right? This album is overrated, so I would not give this a 5.

I like Swift, and watching the kind of weaponized transition interesting Uber Pop was fascinating at the time. Shake It Off and Bad Blood are still bangers. At the end of the day a little mainstream for me and the veneer of production is so seamlessly slick that it doesn’t leave much to hold onto.

Genre: Synthpop 4/5 As much as Taylor Swift’s career has become a meme, and as much as Taylor Swift herself has had to be the female figurehead for “crappy pop music”, there is no denying that 1989 is a real triumph. From the Wall-of-Sound style production from Max Martin on the album’s biggest tracks, to some big vocal performances from Taylor, to the surprising sonic variety throughout the tracklist, this album is really well done. Blank Space-Style-Out of the Woods is a tremendous 3-song run to start the album off, and the album is still a hit machine after that, with songs like Bad Blood and Shake It Off being absolute mega hits for Taylor. This is one that I’m sure a large portion of the listeners on this website will have some sort of problem with, unfortunately rooted in misogyny and reactionary behavior, but for what it is, 1989 is one of the best pop albums to come out in the 2010s. Songs from this album, whether some people would like it or not, will stick around for quite some time. Personally, I recommend the deluxe edition, as the 3 tracks added on after Clean are real gems.

Oh yeh. Having seen her at Wembley despite not thinking I knew any of her toons, can rightly said Taylor is a legend. Album.

Absolutely state of the art pop, but so over-engineered that the songwriting (quite strong) gets buried. Just too much going on. Bunch of truly great songs – “Welcome to New York,” “Shake It Off,” “Clean” – that would be better without all the window dressing or at least with a whole lot less. That Ryan Adams redid the whole record speaks to its strengths and shows the weakness of the production. 3.75 but rounding down.

Her voice is great and the songwriting is really really solid, but the super-clean production makes it sound really sterile. Honestly, a lot of the trap beats sound kind of dated already which I didn't expect. Still, it doesn't have very low lows and I have to admit the singles are pretty phenomenal. "Shake It Off" and "Bad Blood" make it pretty easy to look past some of the Disney musical-sounding singing on the parts of the album which I found a little grating.

Forgettable, except I gotta say I love "Shake It Off."

I was skeptical first - as I though it's too recent to be added to a best of list (it's basically what my daughter is listening to!). But this album got me - the songs are really really catchy, positive (which most of the albums on this lack) but also really creative. Really a masterpiece. And the synths are top notch. I see how she was inspired by the 80s synth songs. In the hope this album stands the test of time - gave it 5 stars. Highlights: Out Of The Woods, Shake It Off, You Are In Love

I felt a little ancient the first time I realized that Taylor Swift named this album 1989 not just because it pays homage to 80s pop, but that it was also the year she was born. It's also funny because I know that I would have loved this album in the 80s even if I pretended I didn't think it was cool. Which is pretty much exactly how I secretly felt about Taylor Swift in the 2010s (secret except for that time I nailed "Look What You Made Me Do" at karaoke). Although I've never listened to this album through before, so many of these songs are burned in my brain from listening so much. I've gotten a whole lot of joy listening, dancing, singing along, and de-stressing to "Shake it Off" in the car. This is my own musical tonic. There isn't a song on here that I don't enjoy.

This album has quite a few singles, and I was familiar with them, but I had never listened to a T.Swift album before. The album marks the shift to full on pop, and it definitely does fit right into that genre. It is a good album. I wasn't really awed by the album, because there wasn't anything there that I didn't expect, I guess. But it was very likable and easy to listen to.

Oh, so this is the Taylor Swift about whom I've heard so much from under the rock where I've been living. I get it now! Hella catchy but also sophisticated pop tunes. Good for the kids and their parents (and their parents' childless friends). Love it!

Has it been nearly 8 years since this was released? Amazing how time flies. Back then I was worried about Taylor Swift going full-on pop because I really loved her country songs. One listen to 1989 and my reservations were swept aside. Every song on this album won me over with infectious hooks galore! I know people who are dismissive of Taylor Swift - but even if you don’t like her music you can’t deny her incredible talent. Transitioning from country to pop is a very challenging feat that a very small number of artists were ever able to pull off. Taylor did this while continuing to write most of her songs, kept her fans in the process, and dominated the music charts the whole time. My love for this album is already obvious since I have had it in regular rotation for the last 8 years. I know haters gonna hate but there’s a special place in my life for Taylor and I’m very happy to see her on this list.

There's a lot to like here. Taylor can turn a phrase, fashion a hook, and be relatable. Intelligent lyrics rub shoulders with throwaway radio-friendly disco.

I’m not a huge Taylor Swift fan, but I can appreciate her music and this was a good album. That’s it. It was good and I appreciate her personal solid storytelling (without going overboard) style.

Oh man this was close to a five stars album. Blank Space and Bad Blood alone are five stars. But the filler tracks are really bad-basic (I Wish You Would—I’m looking at you). Love this pop.

1989 by Taylor Swift (2014) Taylor Swift’s 25-year-old voice is remarkable for its saccharine, airy, and youthful appeal. While her range and tone are only mediocre (requiring a lot of reverb) and while she definitely lacks power, her elocution and diction are superb. She handles consonants with crispness and rhythmic exactitude. And the sweet croaks and glottal stops (e.g., the first eight seconds of “How You Get the Girl”) are executed with the precision of a well trained percussionist. Tonal lifts, bends, slides, and delicate slurs are richly ornamental, but they never obscure the pronunciation, even when she lays down multiple dubs (which is very frequent—listen especially to “This Love”). Every single word can be understood. Her voice is clearly the reason for her monstrous popularity. But musically, the melodies are unimaginative and the synthesizing is overwhelming. It’s expensive without being expansive.   Lyrics are self-centered and non-referential, without intelligence, depth, or even controversy. This is quite an accomplishment for the most financially successful female singer/songwriter of all time. Low level vocabulary and the near absence of poetic figures further diminish the quality of the songs. And her themes reflect ideals that lack maturity. One can justifiably lament the sad effect these lyrics had on her primary audience, adolescent girls and women who are stuck in adolescence. She could benefit by listening to the lyrics of a Judy Collins, Joan Baez, or Joni Mitchell.  After hearing this entire album, the serious listener feels like he/she (mostly she) has just spent 12 hours in a candy store with a credit card.  3/5

Welcome To New York was a questionable intro track Blank Space, Out of The Woods, I Wish You Would, All You Had To Do Was Stay, How You Get The Girl, I Know Places, Wonderland and Clean are excellent songs with beautiful lyricism Best songs on the album: Style (the backing vocals and the additional production was INSANE), Wildest Dreams (I thoroughly enjoyed the heartbeat, the strings and the production), This Love, You Are In Love, New Romantics like she put such amazing effort into the synth programming. The BRIDGE on Wildest Dreams and OOTW are like no other, such amazing work truly I love the guitars and droning sounds on Style, I Know Places and other tracks. If Shake it Off and Bad Blood weren't on it, it'd be a 10/10 but it can only be an 8.5. Lmao I'm listening to Style as we speak.

History will probably put this pop album in the top Tier of the 21st century.

This pop version of Taylor Swift is better than one could realistically imagine given her usual fare up until this album. Taylor Swift pays significant homage to the electronic elements of the late 80s, dabbling in the ambient rock sentiments that would give the 80s sound that much needed layer to be taken seriously. The thing about this album that stands out is Taylor Swift's energy, and her range in matching that. Prior to this, Taylor Swift's popularity was as a country artist. Her talent and relative youth helped to grow the country fanbase as well as being a wholesome darling of that genre. The real miracle of "1989" is that her crossover from country to pop was flawless, even if considered risky. The darling persona of country vs. the mischievous pop star persona is apparently not easy. Where some of her contemporaries flat out divorced their "innocent" portrayals/alter-egos by doing controversial things, Taylor Swift managed instead to grow up right in front of us while keeping her dignity in the process. To conclude this, "1989" does not suffer from an identity crisis as listeners are very much aware that this is Taylor Swift "the girl who sings country". The welcome surprise is that this is Taylor Swift "the girl who sings country" now singing a pop album, and absolutely nailing it in the process. The album is fun, has some snark, and includes some anthemic elements that will likely remain in your head involuntarily.

A soft, twirly album with a couple of catchy beats and songs, but too bubble gum for me

This a pop album done right. It's fun from beginning to end, full of catchy songs and refreshingly positive songs. I realized I had listened to a lot of these songs as covers (which sometimes I enjoyed more) so it was nice to listen to the originals.

Enjoyed some tracks, hated others. First track very blah, blank space was great. Then the quality level of songs starts dropping . Shake it off was ok but not great and bad blood is an objectively bad song. After that things started to get a bit more interesting. Better songs although less catchy than some of the singles. Will probably give it another go in a few weeks to see if I feel the same.

I have to admit I will never stop loving this album...is anyone surprised? I have probably listened to it 100 times and it never gets old. This was when Taylor Swift fully transitioned from the pop-country style to just plain pop. Welcome to NY is the most uplifting declaration of that change and from there the whole album is so nostalgic to the mid-2010s.

A bit one dimensional lyrics wise. I love shake it off, and am very familiar with the rest as my ex wife loved this album. The best of Taylor Swift's albums.

Listened Before? Y Oh Taylor! You were "better" as a country artist, but I have to admit, this album is pretty dang good. Pros: Lets see, there's about 6 absolute certified bangers on this album, and there's only 13 songs! Well done vocals and decent wordplay. It's a solid pop album. Cons: "Out of the Woods" almost makes me stop listening the album on its own. Repetition of subject matter, and feels a little bit dated. I hadn't listened to 1989 in full before, but so many of the songs are familiar, those cornerstones of mid 2010s pop. It's a good album. It feels like Tay-Tay has a solid concept and thoroughly runs through it, her life as a young woman navigating both the life of a celeb and just surviving the dating world. The opening track "Welcome to New York" feels a little out of place because 1989 is not a New York album. But everything works. The best track is "Wildest Dreams", especially the pre-chorus. There's something so heartbreaking about the melancholic "Say you'll remember me standing in a nice dress / Staring at the sunset, babe".

'1989' is a well-engineered pop album, despite its glaring musical predictability. The artistic direction works in favor of it though, a varied mix of tempo and spaciousness - 'Blank Space' in particular has all the right components to be a successful pop record (which it did), demonstrating best Swift's songwriting ability in both repeatable cadences and melodic tunes. A delightful record overall, while thematically commonplace, doesn't tire you immediately.

Trying to find a reason to not give this 5 stars, and I can’t. Loved what she did with Folklore/Evermore and felt this album was the “safe” one for her but she did the genre better than most others. Every song here is a hit. Even the non radio singles are catchy as hell Fave tracks: “Blank Space” “Out of the Woods” “Style” “Bad Blood”

I don't have anything against Taylor Swift, but not a lot for her either. Some catchy bubble gum pop tunes, but nothing special. 3 stars because I'm feeling generous.

This album features a lot of firsts for me on this list: this is the first album I remember coming out and being a huge deal, the first album with multiple hit songs that I already knew before listening (I had already heard 7 (!) out of the 13 tracks), and the first artist that I have actually seen live (Arrowhead Stadium 2018). This was a very successful turn from country to pop for Taylor Swift, and she has continued to evolve ever since then. This may or may not be an exaggeration, but I think 1989 could be considered my generation's Thriller in that every single song could have easily made it on the charts at the time. They are also similar in that they came from an artist already at the top of their genre but pushed them even further into the mainstream; there's a reason why she went from playing arenas to playing stadiums after this album. Overall, this is a very fun record with no real duds. I would lean towards Blank Space and Shake It Off being the stand-out tracks here, but I was pleasantly surprised by This Love and Clean as they were nice calm songs to end out the album. After hearing this fully, this is peak pop Taylor, and I can understand the folk direction she has taken since then as it will be hard to reach these heights again in this genre. 4/5. NOTE: The inclusion of Kendrick Lamar in Bad Blood was a major positive for the single version of this track. The album version felt a little empty, but I'm guessing it's because I am so used to hearing the even more bombastic version instead.

Honestly a really stellar album

This was actually very quite good. And leads me to believe that being a few years younger than Taylor, and a few years behind the curve means I should be getting into all this shit right now

Part of me likes to think that Taylor is writing about the long term prospects for her own career on 'Style', the record's third track. Singing directly to her target market, it is absolutely true that there will always be middle school students that will flock to her concerts and gobble up her records. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that her popularity relates to quality in any way. Repetitive structures, catch-phrase lyrics, and monotonous production decimate what little there is to begin with here. Insipid pop music.

6/10 for production minus 2 for the laziest lyrics i’ve ever heard, you have to be a walking red flag (and a legitimate bad person) to have THAT many exes you need to shit on in every song minus another 2 for every song sounding the same, oh wow THIS song has trumpets! and THIS song has acoustic guitar, how creative! and minus another 2 for pure pettiness, I’ve had to listen to each and every one of these songs ad nauseam when this POS album was new hearing this album put my body into a fight-or-flight response, I still get fucking PTSD flashbacks to that Norm of the North trailer I would rather eat a literal dick the way Armin Meiwes would, than listen to this god forsaken album one more gd time

Every single song on this album is an absolute pop banger......are words I never thought I'd say about a Taylor Swift album..... but this album is great in a genre that has spawned WAP, to have a collection of songs as catchy, light hearted and positive as this is a rare treat

Swedish super-producer pop. It's fine, but I couldn't find anything distinctive about it. I'd never listened to Taylor Swift before, but was expecting better based on reputation. I'm not sure if the generic production style hides some good song writing, or serves to disguise a lack of quality songs. 2/5

I listened to this album the first time under duress, assuming I would hate it, but the only really bad track on here is Bad Blood. Is this my favorite music ever? No. But I think the best part about it is that it absolutely nails what it's going for and for that reason I like listening to it. It makes me feel like a heartbroken teenage girl all over again. And I only mean that half-jokingly.

I've never knowingly listened to a Taylor Swift track, though I recognised a few from this. I found the whole experience utterly depressing. I will always champion something that's incompetent but ambitious versus competent mediocrity, and this falls squarely into the latter camp. I realise I'm not the target audience for this pabulum but someone thinks it's one of a thousand-odd albums I need to hear before croaking. I'm almost glad I did, because it'll make all the other colours brighter. Lyrics and production are terrible, but overall it's the fact that this just sounds so dead that makes me recoil. This feels like music that could be written, and performed, by AI. You could tell me that there wasn't a single trace of human endeavour to be found in 1989 and I would believe you.

We’ve listened to a lot of the pop divas this year, because that’s what my daughter’s been gravitating to of late. (Don’t worry, she also likes Twisted Sister.) I knew a bunch of songs off this album and like a fair few of them just fine. But yeah, when you compare this to some of her contemporaries, Swift really truly sounds like a teenager who can’t sing or write as well as the older, cooler, meaner girls who have already been through some stone cold shit. I understand why certain people of a certain age worship her. I need to listen to some of the more recent stuff, but I don’t know - I still suspect there are more interesting and talented pop stars to hitch my old ass cart to when I need a ride to Top 40 Town.

Not a fan… a few good songs

This is one of my favorite albums of hers, especially the deluxe edition that has the song "You Are In Love" but I'll stick with the regular. There are so many great songs on here, Blank Space, Out of the Woods, Shake It Off, Bad Blood, Wildest Dreams, How You Get the Girl, This Love...this was also her first pop album which was probably why it stuck so much with me. I wasn't as big a fan of country Taylor and when this album came out I fell in love with her pop side. This album is an easy four star, but I'm giving it five because it is very difficult for artists to change genres and she pulled it off.

Here's a familiar face. The so-called Album of the Year in 2015, over To Pimp A Butterfly in case you forgot. Fun as it is to poke fun at Taylor Swift, I do think this is a great pop album, even if it wears influence on its sleeves. Remember, she used to be a country singer-songwriter. The irony of this album opening with Taylor Swift of all people welcoming us to New York over an '80s beat will never be lost on me. Still a number of tracks on here that I enjoy, but honestly I remembered it being a bit better than it is today. I guess I'm just annoyed with a lot of the songs I don't like, which were (and are) overplayed to death. Taylor has a line on one of her newer songs, "I always felt I must look better in the rear view." For this album, and for a lot of pop music, that might be the case. Nevertheless, it's a solid project, and I will continue to carry the hits (as I see them) with me. Favorite tracks: All You Had to Do Was Stay, Wildest Dreams, I Know Places, New Romantics, Bad Blood. Album art: I mean I guess it's iconic as far as Swift covers go, not really her strong suit if we're being honest. Coming from the country background, it's all cheesy senior picture-type portraits. But this one tries to club you over the head with nostalgia, if that's not obvious from the title. 4/5

This is, uh, kinda a masterpiece, right? I mean, the singles are exemplary, but the whole thing is warm, sweet, delicious pop goodness. Taylor Swift is at her best here, Max Martin and Jack Antonoff snapped, and I really wish I would have appreciated this more when it came out. Very thoughtful of the generator to remind me of my age on my birthday. It's wall-to-wall pop bangers, innit? Over time I have come to first accept, and then welcome, the reign of our new all-powerful country/pop/indie-folk overlord. Some of her other albums lack consistency but most of these tracks sound like hit singles.

Sounds much the same as modern pop, though less bombastic and generally lower-key. A lot of the lyrics I think reinforce bad relationship habits and hearing Swift sing as if she can't just have anyone she wants at a moment's notice beggars belief. Not my cup of tea but it was easy enough listening.

Overproduced. Formulaic. Vapid lyrics. Catchy melodies though. Bit far from those country roots when she was playing bars in places like Kuna, Idaho. Unfortunately, I did catch myself bobbing my head a number of times. That's the only reason it gets two stars.

Great singer of the '90

I was surprised to really enjoy this. It's pure pop and very well done. All the songs blend into one happy sound and it's not something I would ever normally listen to (and probably never will again) but apart from clubs (obviously) it would make great factory/shop background music. No good for just sitting and listening to, it's music for doing things to.

I've hard like 60% of this album in grocery stores, malls, or when I'm with someone that only listens to Top 40. It's good enough, the people that wrote, produced, and put together all of the songs for her to sing did a good enough job on a technical level. But at the end of the day it's Focus Group music. Not for me, it's cold, emotionless, appeal to the masses music, there's no art here; only marketing.

Cannot argue with the success. So many popular songs on that album. And even the ones I did not know are clearly Taylor. Can be a bit boring to listen to too many similar songs but hey who said it need to be all in one sitting?

Pretty catchy, but the clever lyrics can't cover up the repetitive themes. Tay Tay breaks up with more people *per song* than I have in my life time. Maybe the haters in Shake It Off have a point?

The Swedish album. ABBA (who I love) have a lot to answer for. A quick poll of a few teenagers who were in the sweet spot for this album when it was released: they remember nothing. Pop, good Pop at least, must be memorable and enduring. This album fails on the second count. (I’ll pass on the first.) Nobody argues if the new Taylor Swift album is better than the last, because no one remembers the last. (This may be a failing of autobiographical Pop too…)

Great pop record…

Popsynth album with a lot of radio hits on it. Well executed, although some of the songs on this are not as stellar as I would like. The general feel of the album is great however, but it does end up feeling more like a compilation then an album to me

As far a contemporary pop goes, not bad. For pop, I’d rather look to artists like Grimes, Carly Rae Jepsen, Sophie, GFOTY, Charli XCX, and 100 Gecs, but I won’t complain if someone puts some T-Swizzle on.

Now This is A challenge for me! I always linked Taylor Swift to Manufactured Pop or Country. So Listening to this Album for the first time! (My Daughter had suggested that there is more to Taylor than meets the eye but I have to be convinced. After Listening to this I am NOT CONVINCED! derivative manufactured pop for the teenage girl I fear! Can't say I've been converted by this. Best song on the Album... so hard to chose but if I had to chose I suppose Champagne Problems sort of breaks the ManPop mould a bit. but as I say not a fan or convert. Okay I suppose reluctantly I might concede that "Shake It Off" is a goodish pop song but still not convinced that this rates as an LP to hear before I Die!

Just came off incredibly lazy/meaningless song (and I'm from just outside of NYC) and shouldn't have opened the album with it but Swift really flexes her songwriting ability on this album. I'm not above enjoying a pop album, and this is one of the defining pop albums of the last few years. So many of these tracks still SLAP. I love Bad Blood so much. I'm not going to give this 5 stars. It's too new. It lacks proper historical context. But it's such a perfect example of what it is, both in time and place.

I'm not really a modern-pop fan. It's not necessarily terrible, it just too often bores me. But I want to know everything :) so this was more than welcomed. It doesn't take long to really ... figure it out. More clichés than a Bon Jovi album, no adventurous or even unexpected musical turns, and is TSwift really a great - or good - singer? She *might* be - she does have a very nice/pleasant voice, but something that I notice at least in this collection is that she's not an *adventurous* singer at all (not necessarily in range, but in rhythm and taking many chances) but boy is she - and this album - produced within an inch of its life. It really is the equivalent of pixy sticks - remember those? A paper straw literally filled with flavoured sugar. You never get full, as you're sucking it down it's admittedly enjoyable, but like when you're getting the last of the sugar... almost immediately after the next song starts...I can't really remember much about the previous one. I will note two standouts: "Shake It Off" is one that's known even by me and dammit, it's good. TS gives something extra in this one - something about the rhythm of the lyrics and the way she delivers the lines, and just the absolute catchiness of it - it's a great pop song - period. "This Love" immediately stuck out to me as the best song on the album because it's really the only one that doesn't sound like many of the others - a really nice mellow feel based around a simple guitar pattern. I'd like more of these - I feel like 3 songs in this vein would have boosted my overall enjoyment of the album. With zero evidence :D I feel like this album people will either love it or slam it because it's the *most simple* of pop. I feel like both can be true at the same time. Maybe that's a good thing. As a music producer myself, I've found myself listening to each song a few times trying to figure out how some of the uber-smooth vocal techniques are done, it's quite enjoyable on that level and for me just edges it into 3 star territory. But the simplicity of the 4 chords songs just runs a little thin after a while - I could do a few songs - say, an EP - of this just gets a little long to go through the full album. One positive is that even though I know she's the biggest star on the planet I'm actually unfamiliar with most of her music and I'm curious to hear where she's gone after this. 5/10 3 stars

Yeah... It's not my genre of music, but the pure poppiness of it is very enjoyable. Reminds me a bit of the anthems for a generation from Jagged Little Pill.

An Album that solidified the transition from country to pop. Many great songs and hits on this album.

Not really my speed, but she can write a hook. First album where I had never gone out of my way to listen to any of the sons, but had already heard all of them.

A favorite album. My biased opinion finds this album sublime, joyous, perfect. Even better in the DLX version.

I could write up a bunch about this album honestly. It came out when I had just started going to college. So it got a lot of play time in the car and when I used to go on runs. It reminds me of many good memories, it was like a musical backdrop for that year. But even aside from that, It's really insane that like more than 70% of this album were huge hits. For me, It's probably my favorite Taylor Swift Project. I love the way she went with the sound and sort of left the more country stylings behind. Definitely in favor of the more poppy sound for sure. I actually recommend this album to people when they don't really like much of her work. Especially when they didn't enjoy fearless or Red.

A disclaimer of sorts: I am the father of three girls with the youngest born the year before this album came out. I've heard the singles and a couple other tracks MANY times (and it's been a generally enjoyable experience). There are some tracks that automatically call back to hearing a two-year old singing along from her car seat. "Style" and "Clean" are two tracks that I would recommend a listen to, if you want to hear a track that might be new to you. This was my first listen to the entire album, but this is one that definitely has a place at our house. I'd probably listen to it again. Here's another tangent - My oldest was surprised and a little confused when I played Ryan Adams' version of "Blank Space" - that was fun.

Fuck it. I keep looking for reasons to not give this a five but I'm being an idiot. This is a great listen start to finish. Tons of hits and even when it slows down towards the end the songs still get to me. I unabashedly think this is a great album. In other words - I like a the juice.

Taylor is a guilty pleasure of mine. She’s a fantastic songwriter and has proven she can write hits. This may be her best album. 4.5/5.

Pop candy. Blank Space is such a killer tune, and Shake It Off is a modern classic. She has such a knack for songwriting and melody. This prompted a deep dive into 2 of her other albums, Fearless, and Red. Time for this 40 year old man to reconsider any foolishly-held notions about modern artists.

Definition of all right. Incredibly sterile, offensively inoffensive, catchy but uninteresting production that rarely is fun. It feels so safe, while listening to this i felt like i was listening to an album of songs made for the sole purpose of getting some hits, it felt so calculated. No idea what this is doing on this list. The two tracks i liked are Shake it off, which is a great and fun song with a (for this album) unique instrumental, and Clean, which was a great emotional pop song.

Oh why can't this be Folklore? Then it'd be a 5. This is still one of Taylor's go to albums, but I'm guessing it'll be bumped for Folklore in the future. It better be on a future list. Or maybe the next list will have room for both folklore and 1989. It should, because damn does Taylor know her some hooks. Actual rating is 4.5.

I only listen to this all the time whenever my daughter is in the room. I can tell you that I hate this album because it's on all the time when my daughter is in the room. If there isn't a speaker nearby I still listen to this when my daughter is in the room, BECAUSE SHE'S SINGING it! Even still with all of these catchy ear worms, prancing and dancing and being silly like teenage girls can sometimes be, I'd still hang out with my daughter even if it meant listening to 1989.

Seriously? I made it through 2/3 of the way. The lyrics are laughable and the music boring at best, and grating at worst.

Non-stop bops

Para mi Taylor es la reina de la fórmula borderline narcissistic gurl, y por eso motivo me seca el alma. El disco para lo que apunta a ser, me parece que está bueno, aunque eso no evita que no me guste. Si me aparece alguna canción random en un playlist seguramente la escuche. Por suerte parece que creció un poco y ahora repite menos palabras en sus letras.

El disco es un hit atrás de otro. Realmente es tremendo el laburo que tiene encima cada tema. Se nota que se pensaron para ser todos hits. Técnicamente tremendo, pero después de un rato te empalaga un toque. Blank Space, Out in the Woods y Wildest Dreams fue lo que mas me gustó.

Es un álbum con temas muy dulces y pegadizos. Es ideal para ir caminando y tener un buen día. Y cantar los temas a los gritos. y obvio shake it off es para mover todo el cucu.

No me gusta, me siento en un mall. No es insoportable, pero no lo escucharía por voluntad propia. "Shake it off" es adictivo as fuck y te hace mover el piecito. "Bad Blood" me parece un muy buen tema aunque sigue siendo muy american pop para lo que puedo tolerar. Después de eso, todo va en picada.

Para ser un album hecho con 24 años es un discazo. Cualquiera de los temas menos conocidos puede ser un hit. Se distingue muchisimo la produccion de Max Martin y Greg Kurstin porque todo parece fabricado para ser un exito. No soy fanatico de los discos de pop sobreproducidos y sobreingeniereados pero éste es lo suficientemente bueno para marcar la diferencia. Creo que lo que mas me gusta es que no es un album POP epico alla Lady Gaga o Maddonna donde todo es gigante e intenso, es un muy buen (late) coming out of age. Notas adicionales: -Shake it Off no está ni entre los 3 mejores del disco aunque entiendo por qué lo pondrian como single del disco. -Hay temas (Welcome to New York, por ej) que si la ponés a Carly Rae Jepsen mantienen el valor de produccion. -Fascinante la base synthwavey de Style -La tapa me parece timeless y va directo a /r/albumartporn -QUE TEMAZO THIS LOVE -Dice Kanye que de nada.

I was sorta familiar with this from the Ryan Adams cover version. His version is better. :) But Taylor’s is very good. It’s a very good pop album. It’s not a masterpiece. Her voice is good but not spectacular, the songwriting is occasionally spectacular but sometimes a bit cringy. Sorry Swifties, but let’s be honest - you’ve gotta be judicious with the 5 star reviews.

No denying she’s a decent songwriter that knows how to write a catchy hook. She is not a good singer, though, and I find her lyrics to be insipid and catering to the LCD. Not for me.

Ahhh love me some T Swizzle. Blank Space and Wildest Dreams are solid and Shake It Off should make anyone want to dance. The opening bass line on Style gives me the chills. This album is the beginning of her musical metamorphosis and is pretty good, but not yet peak T Swizzle.

An album of music I wouldn't typicaly want to listen to in full, but it is full of great tracks

Some amazing music and production. Every song is beautifully crafted and just drags you in. I do wish that some of the songs took a few more risks and had more room to breathe - not every songs needs to be a 4 minute single. What spoils it for me is that it feels like the soundtrack to a high school drama. Which it probably has been used for multiple times. Lyrically it really paints a picture, but a picture of a shallow self absorbed person going through a breakup with no shred of intropection beyond 'I like bad boys lol'

I will never not rate Taylor Swift 5/5! The day of got this album, some clowns had been speculating she would rerelease (or announce the date for) 1989, so it felt like a casually cruel twist of fate to get it.

An impressive pop album

I already have this album added to my library, and what a fantastic album it is! The entire record is filled with pop hits that were very popular when it came out, and rightfully so. The songs are catchy, Taylor’s vocals are amazing, and the overall production is great! This album is so much fun and with so many hits, and basically no duds, it’s very hard to pick a favorite! I know Taylor Swift can be somewhat polarizing, but I don’t understand how anyone can listen to this album open-mindedly and genuinely believe that it’s bad. In fact, I would venture as far as to say this is an almost perfect pop album! 5/5

Good pop album

I’m a Swiftie but this is only my 4th favourite Tay Tay album.

Great, catchy and polished radio pop.

Nothing unpleasant or offensive about it but nothing poetic or profound either. I don't understand the appeal.

Packed full of pop hits. Only 2/13 tracks that I don't like.

This one caught me off-guard, some great pop tunes and I'm a big fan of those synth sounds. Best track: Style

Listenable! Not quite my bag but I didn't feel compelled to turn it off. I wonder if this was the album where so much of what I hear in pop today started.

The quintessential pop album? Every other song is a damn hit, and even the ones that didn't dominate the radio and department store playlists are catchy as fuck. I would've had a rough time telling you when exactly these songs came out before I came back to this album, and that really just speaks to the timeless feel of this record. Shocked I didn't have any of them saved before this because what a first 4 songs. Such a good pop album, the literal blueprint for at least half of the past 7 years worth of pop albums. Not as big a fan of the slower songs on this album and Bad Blood is a whiff for me, but a great album nonetheless. Glad she got some respect and made the list. 4.

4.0 - slick production, clever lyrics, some bangers. All around a solid pop album. I’d underestimated Taylor Swift. There’s substance here.

Better than I expected it to be, but it felt very empty and without substance. It is truly a pop album, in the sense that it is designed to get radio airplay and promote the artist as a Pop Star instead of as a musician.

Full of bops, didn't expect to like it that much

Players gonna play and the haters gonna hate

It's a great pop album, with a few absolute pop bangers (mostly the Max Martin/Shellback songs). However, there are quite a few less interesting tracks too (i.e. filler), and the album really tails off after Bad Blood. And as much as I do tend to love the Max Martin/Shellback stuff, they come up with some really awful bridges. Blank Space, Shake It Off, Bad Blood - all really weak bridges that just kill the momentum in otherwise excellent pop songs.

If you like pop music, it's pretty damn good.

My first exposure to 1989 was the Ryan Adams cover. That colors my experience of this listen, the most underwhelming one so far: The songwriting here is incredibly strong. The production is flawless as well, though it sometimes comes across as overproduction. Never stale, to be fair, and the magic of the album is when the vocals and production and songwriting perfectly overlay one another for a few transcendent seconds. Those intervals have been different for me over the years. This time I paid more attention to Taylor's vocals as well, which have a good amount of diversity while staying signature.
