5/5 What an awesome album. It's not my favourite Swift album but that's probably only because it's not the first one I listened to thoroughly. I love Style, Out of the Woods, Shake it Off and obviously How You Get The Girl. I can relate to them so much. I love singing along to this album.
Bias is involved here as I have this album in my car CD player and have done for months. From the opening track to the end I enjoy this. I do sometimes skip Shake It Off but overall it's a great pop album. Yes her singing isn't great however her storytelling is. Plus her lack of vocal prowess makes it easier to sing along to haha.

The hits are fantastic on this one, but the rest of the album doesn’t quite earn the five.
Good pop
I can't say I'm a fan of Taylor Swift, but that won't prevent me from giving credit where credit is due here. This album was (is?) HUGE. I think she released just about everything as a single off of this one. And, even though it's not her first album, it was really her breakout album into pop. And, admittedly, it's great.
I appreciate the huge success this album achieved, it's just a bit too modern pop for my tastes. Couple of tolerable tracks, but overall, meh.

Huh. When this came up I wasn't really looking forward to it - this is an album that released when I was still a teenager, at a time when this couldn't have really been further from the kind of thing I was listening to. It was that kind of young and dumb age where I could dismiss something like this for being "girl's music", which is a concept that I find absurd now that I've grown up and thrown away my insecurities. It also didn't help that this was overplayed to shit when this first came out. But despite all that, I thought this was pretty good! Dedicating the time to listen to this whole album, in a much higher quality format than over the radio, I saw just how well-produced this was, and I think enough time has gone by to not have any resentment for any of the more overplayed songs back in the mid-to-late 10s. Don't get me wrong, not every song here was that interesting to me, but damn this has some catchy synthpop bangers. Favourite: Shake It Off
Certainly a really catchy album, but I think the lyrics are it’s downfall. They are mostly just very surface level and nonspecific that the songs don’t have much unique feel. The beats are really spot on for a lot of stuff from the early 2010s (reminded me of stuff like The Naked and Famous). Overall pretty good! 7/10
Not a big fan very cheesy and not interesting, the drums are as bland as tofu, it’s all very boring and dosent have anything interesting musically, at least Taylor’s voice isn’t saturated with autotune and the vocals aren’t bad. In terms of lyrics it’s pretty awful, singing about poppy romance and being the bad girl ain’t very great. Listening to it makes me hate Taylor swift cause it’s just repetitive and lacks and value to me One isn’t a small enough number to accurately describe how bad this is Probably .5/10

I just don’t like pop that much and have never connected with Taylor. Given this is her poppiest and most mainstream album I just can’t get into it. It’s just not for me.

Very commercialised pop music without any surface, it is simple music with simple lyrics. It isn't horrible in a way that it is completely unlistenable but this album is a good example why I can't stand commercial pop music from the past years.
This is the opposite of all my music, but I have to admit that Taylor Swift can write a song.
Boy, did I enjoy the hell out of this album... I've heard the hits over the years as the husband of a self-proclaimed "Swiftie", but the deeper cuts were almost as great, if not better.
This was an album I couldn't wait for it to be over. It's like being slowly smothered by a pink cuddly cloud that's overly cheery and dreamy. Pros: + Taylor Swift surely can sing +The production quality is great + Some songs are catchy... Cons: -...but they overstay their welcome - The hooks are repetitive and get annoying after a while - It's like a teen drama film in music format and wouldn't surprise me if some of the songs have been used in such a film - The lyrics get tiresome after a while. In short this wasn't for me at all. I usually don't notice the lyrics that much but I made a concious effort and it was a mistake. It's like watching a teen drama. Not trying to be insulting but maybe if I was a teenage girl I would like it. I've never been one so I couldn't say.

This long list of overplayed radio songs sounds pretty damn good after being allowed to fallow a few years. Bad Blood is kind of a stinker. But if that’s the worst on a pop album you’re in elevated territory.
I appreciate TS being able to make fun of herself in Shake It Off, and sort of in Blank Space. There are a few good songs, but mostly just kind of boilerplate narcissistic pop.
Best album ever
I almost went with 4 stars because of Shake It Off and Bad Blood, but this is still just an undeniable pop masterpiece.
Some of the big singles are kind of grating now, but I had this album on repeat for so long after it came out that I still have to give it a 4 even if I don't feel like listening to it on repeat anymore. I can't help but compare 1989 to Lorde's Pure Heroine from the year before and CRJ's Emotion from the year after, which have both held up better imo.

Good pop album with a lot of new modern classics, like Blank Space, Style and Wildest Dreams. Unfortunately not all of it is great. Shake It Off is annoying and some songs, like This Love and I Know Places are not really memorable. The great production throughout keeps this album cohesive and fun. 7,5/10

Synthy bubble bum pop that's about as catchy as you think sugar is to 5 year-olds, As the tracks roll on you just hear catchy hits like they were going full tilt on a cash printing machine , Though the lyrics are mostly notably about breakups and yah girl boss themes ,you wouldn't expect much else from the genre I guess. Score: 30 We've made it to the complete antithesis of artistry; making music with the sole purpose of making hits and winning grammys. Produced to the max, designed to be as catchy as possible. So is it any good? No not really. Some songs are good like blank space and style. Every other song is middle of the road or insufferable. Welcome to new york, shake it off and bad blood fit into this category. The production on shake it off deserves its own little paragraph because it is atrocious. I've heard better horn sound effects on children's toys at target. If the drums are played by a real human being i would be shocked. The clacking drumstick sound is so mind numbing and it's persists throughout the entire track and once you notice it it's game over. The bridge is cringe. Bad blood is just a bad song period, everyone knows that. Taylor never sounds like she's trying at all with her vocal performance besides maybe a few moments in wildest dreams and clean. Her voice never sounds bad but it fuels the soulless feel to this album. Nothing about it feels organic. The lyrics are vapid and I don't believe they are sincere, even as generic as they are. I wanted it to end multiple times
This album is pretty good. Some great songs with catchy beats and well written lyrics... Also, there is Bad Blood, which is terrible. Taylor is a smart lady. Adding Max Martin as co-producer made this album, and her, unstoppable. Don't scoff at this album just because it is newer pop music. There is at least something here for everyone. 3.5/5
Not a Swiftie, but there is no denying this is an iconic pop album.
Shake it Off and Bad Blood are as bad as Style and Wildest Dreams are good. Very uneven for sure but I can understand its inclusion in such a list. There are better pop albums to represent the 2010s, but it's hard to ignore its impact overall.
Idk man, I know she's wildly popular for good reason, but I find that her singing lacks interesting vocal melodies. Sounds...generic?
I liked it more than I thought I would. There are some catchy songs.
Taylor proving again and again and again that she's one of the best songwriters in the business. So many massive hits here, and they're great songs. I must admit that Ryan Adams's cover album converted me. I listened to it, and thought these songs are so good, to be fair I should go back to the original and honestly evaluate which one is better. I went song by song, and in the end, Taylor won. If I had to pick a few favorites I would say "Style" "Wildest Dreams" and "I Know Places."
I like this better than "evermore" and her indie folk stuff but I still don't LIKE it. "Shake It Off" is a standout track though. I definitely prefer T Swift the more fun and carefree she gets. Conversely, the low stakes melodrama of "Wildest Dreams" gave me a significant impulse to skip the track. And the breathy double-tracked stereo-panned vocals on "This Love" made me feel like she was giving me an incredibly awkward and somewhat unwelcome ear massage. I wish she would do something that would truly surprise me. Like really let her inner freak out somehow. Or maybe just take some of the studio polish off. This is so slick I can't get a grip on it.
Completely junk food pop. I honestly don't get why some folks are like "Taylor Swift is really a different breed", there is so much more pop music I'd rather listen to. I find everything about it vapid, surface level, and completely polished that nothing interesting remains. Nothing here is what I listen to music for. That said, I get why people would like it. It ticks a lot of the boxes for what a lot of people like to listen to. But my god, it's a 1 in enjoyment but I can't in good conscious rate it that low, but this is my damnest 2 thus far.
I think my issue with Taylor Swift is she feels very distant from the rest of the music itself. It feels like a lot of care went into the production of this music but it lacks real emotion from the delivery.

All the hits but Clean was the best song on the album
Hindsight is 20/20, and I'm feeling that now that I look back on my 2-star rating of Swift's 'evermore' a while ago. Compared to this LP, 'evermore' is a Nobel Prize in Literature winning, 5-star work of genius and creativity. Repetitive choruses written at the schoolyard-chant level, bland instrumentals born straight out of a sterile DAW with no human hand, classic Max Martin production that sucks the air out of every ounce of soul or humanity left – the awful but understandable ingredients of an LP that dominated the airwaves and zeitgeist so thoroughly it hasn't quite been matched since. This lab-grown, genetically-engineered organism of an album has no other purpose but to seek and destroy entire blocks of radio play, to still dominate house-party and club playlists, to worm its way so thoroughly into your brain you can't help but tap along to the stupidly simple saxophone accents in 'Shake It Off.' There's not one entire genuine expression of artistic merit or flair on this thing; instead, it's a scientific study in how to combine the most dull and minimal of musical elements to maximize the fittingly named Big Machine Records and Swifts' bottom line. And before you accuse me of being a hater, please compare her debut (that forgotten country relic which features Swift playing a real instrument and swinging above her weight with some pretty impressive narrative lyricism) to this album, one that can rarely be bothered to find a different set of lyrics for the second verse instead of just aping the first one again. It should be abundantly clear by now but this album, to me, represents the absolute nadir of big-money, label-made music and the homogenization of pop culture as a whole. This is what happens when you pursue a 100% capital-oriented pursuit to music in the interest of inflating your profits - and it worked! It worked so well that Max Martin gets to produce anything and everything nowadays, leading to popular music which sounds melodically similar (there are YouTube compilations out there if you don't believe me) and lifeless, music that has no soul because no one involved had actual music in mind. I guess this is /truly/ one of the 1001 albums to listen to before you die in that it provides a tripping hazard in hell of bar for genuine artistry.

Bit disappointing, if I'm honest. Knew a few of the songs (Shake It Off, Blank Space, and Bad Blood), but had never listened to the album in full. The singles are catchy pop, the rest of the album is... not catchy pop. First track is pretty painful, the synth sounds amazingly dated, vocals are mega over produced and the song is so repetitive and boting, and once you got past Bad Blood it really fades away. Makes a 3 on the strength of the singles, which are really catchy and great pop, but not brilliant.

The more I hear pop albums the more I’m reminded of the quote from the meeseeks in Rick and morty - “We’re not supposed to live this long! It feels weird!” I think it’s inherently difficult to write an exceptional pop album. The genre is more suited to the EP. The singles on this were great but I thought it was about to end like 4 times.
Ok Taylor. We have really come a long as way from country superstar. Blank Space is a hit but her lyricism is so....textureless? Its like if you took Hailey Williams, put her at like 90% output, and make her sing lyrics written by a toddler. Style I can get behind. I'm not super impressed with Out Of The Woods, though I am such a fan of Jack Antonoff normally. Shake It Off kicks so much ass as a club banger, burn the house down tune. Bad Blood is a song that I want to dislike but it's fine and enjoyable, though jesus her lyrics are so damn bland. Wildest Dreams I think is the first track on the album where there is this distinctive texture that is definitively Taylor, and it feels like her voice as a performer stands up to the task of carrying a pop song on its shoulders. I Know Places sounds like a rejected Linkin Park song. Man, I am conflicted about this album. When it is good its great and when its not good it sucks hard.
I hardly ever listen to pop music of this era these days, but this project has allowed me to break out of my comfort zone a little bit. This came out when I was in 4th grade so I have a little bit of nostalgia for the radio hits. Apart from the singles, the rest of the album was actually pretty alright too, definitely worth checking out again sometime. There were certainly a couple bad moments but overall my expectations were shattered. I'd be open to checking out more pop albums that came out during my childhood sometime. Got a little bit bored near the end and didn't finish the last 2 or 3 tracks, but overall I'd give this a 6/10.

Here we see Taylor Swift emerge completely as a pop star. This album is such a turning point in her career though it was obvious to anyone paying attention that he sights were turned to pop. The electro synth sound of the early 2010's is strong here of course, wrapping the listener in a gauzy array of sounds with strong echoey 80s beats. Swift borrows freely from the sounds of her pop contemporaries (who had been in the pop scene longer) including Katy Perry and Carlie Rae Jepsen. Amazingly, despite her genre shifting, Swift always sounds like herself. Her sense of melody including the intervals she uses are unique to her for the most part, or at least she's employed them persistently enough that they are squarely hers. The back half of the album is weaker than the first, but it's such an easy listen that I'm not sure it matters.

I can imagine that, when for example played in the supermarket, some of these songs will put a smile on my face. As an album I think it's just overproduced shit without any emotion.

I have done my best to avoid Taylor Swift until this day. The only Taylor Swift song I had previously heard was Shake It Off, which was repeatedly played during a vacation to Disney World. I don't know why, but she just always rubbed me the wrong way, so I never actually gave her a chance. I hate to admit it, but this is a really fun album.

El éxito de Taylor no es casualidad, tiene unas letras y un carisma únicos, sin embargo, 1989 se siente como un desperdicio del formato álbum, 13 canciones que todas intentan ser hits de radio y muy pocas exhiben la calidad necesaria para no ser instantáneamente olvidadas por el oyente. 4/10
Pop de sábanas blancas, suave como un sol de Cancún en mayo, que te pega en los ojos mientras al lado tuyo baila una señora en sombrero y anteojos de sol; y delante, una instructora grita en espasmos, despertando de la siesta a un abuelo cuyos nietos juegan en la alberca. Qué sé yo, Blank Space más o menos zafa, si lo que querés es menoscabar la psiquis de tus empleados.
Honestamente no le veo el charm a las canciones de este disco, a excepción de Shake It Off que me pareció muy divertida, y Wildest Dreams que fue la única con la que pude conectar un poco.
Como bien relata ironicamente el licenciado Molfino, no me siento parte de la audiencia a la que se dirije este album. Si bien, el tono serio y sentimental de la cancion seguramente conecte intimamente con aquellas personas que sí, al no tener esa conección las canciones fallan y cansan. En relación a la musica, hay buenos temas aquí. Entre ellos Style, Wildest Dreams y Shake it Off son temas que salvan al album de un 1 por su mero entretenimiento y solidez musical. Que dice Nahue??

I think this is the first time I’m hearing her music. Probably heard it in the background before, as popular as she is, but this is the first time I’ve paid any attention. Well produced, and I can see the appeal, but not really up my alley.
Svenskproducerad 10-tals-pop, soundet som dominerat poptopplistorna i vad som känns som hela mitt vuxna liv. Väldigt snäll, lättillgänglig pop, mest om kärlek och hjärtesorg. Ljudbilden gör dock att det temat inte riktigt berör på djupet. Många låtar jag skulle älska att skriksjunga till på dansgolvet, men inte tillräckligt med skav eller mörker för att jag ska fastna på riktigt. Ibland är det lite cringe textmässigt, som i stora delar av 'Wildest Dreams', eller hela "they are the hunters, we are the foxes"-grejen i 'I Know Places', som annars är helt okej. Tyvärr några låtar som jag helt enkelt inte tycker är så bra. Här finns främst 'Bad Blood' och 'How You Get The Girl'. 'Clean' är en fin avslutning! Gillar också 'Style', 'I Wish You Would', och såklart 'Shake It Off'. Och, när allt är sagt och gjort är ändå 'Blank Space' en rejäl banger. Har velat mellan en tvåa och en trea, men känner mig schysst för tillfället. Bästa låt: Blank Space.

One of T-Swift's best, busting with pop bangers
Only one track half grabbed my attention. Maybe on subsequent attempts I'd get mire from it, but Sw8ft has never been my cup of tea.
Taylor Swift knows her way around a pop song. There are some real gems on this album and even her missteps land in the territory of okay. That said, there are some who might immediately dismiss this album based on genre alone. I can understand.

I enjoyed that more than I thought I would, given how far away from the target market I am. And enjoyed listening to the Ryan Adams cover of the whole album. That is pretty unusual

You just can't really hate on T-Swizzle. The amount of time she's been in the public scene and hasn't gone absolutely crazy is just impressive. "Blank Space" and "Shake It Off" captured the cultural zeitgeist for long enough that even the most adamant "Taylor sucks" fans will find themselves humming along. And while I wouldn't say I'm a Taylor fan, or even that this is her best album, I found myself knowing all the words to "Style", "Bad Blood", and "Wildest Dreams" This album is a solid 4 star for me. As much as I will shit on Taylor for co-opting the Indie Folk genre, I know I will likely give her a 5 star for Evermore. She is just a great artist that gets a lot of hate because she's popular, though she deserves the hate for her private jet usage.

You can say there are some lulls or dips to this album, or just write it off because of the artist behind it, but that would be a mistake. As a Pop album, this is one of the greatest albums out there. It may lack in depth, but the heartbreak and joy of dealing with this catchy pop songs soars to incredible heights and is one of the biggest reasons that Taylor Swift is at the current level of fame she is at.

If it wasn't for 1,001 and this cool website I wouldn't listen to albums that are not on my radar such as this. Because of 1,001 I've found some hidden gems so I thank them for that. For example, I would never have listened to Kanye's Dark Twisted Fantasy because I think he's a douche, but I was genuinely surprised at how good that album was. He really is a crazy genius mofo. Unfortunately Taylor Swift isn't in that category it reinforces why I was correct in avoiding it for all those years. Damn you 1,001, this was pure shite
Highlights: Hard to pick. It's consistent. There are some especially annoying ones to avoid like "Out of the Woods" and "Welcome to New York." Some specific notes apart from the obvious: 1. What's driving this more than the 808s and synths is that it is *festooned* with vocal tracks -- not as harmony, but as in Swift has a platoon of Swift hype-men at all times. 2. Although she's in the '00s-Present school of "loud = good" vocal performance, she's more effective at emoting than Katy Perry, granted Perry is working against anti-anxiety meds. 3. Despite there being a definite cookie cutter songwriting, every bridge completely dumps all the energy out of the song. You make all these hooks and do all this production and can't write a single decent bridge? What's up with that? But the obvious: Swift is extremely okay. There is nothing surprising here. The problem is all the people still trying to prove her excellence. She gets credit for being young. She gets credit for writing her own songs (partially). She gets credit for being marginally smarter than other pop songs by providing enough detail that the lyrics are effectively the script for the music video. She knows how to lean on a little wordplay to confuse confusion with profundity. None of this is meaningful.

One of t swifts best, banger after banger
Not a Swiftie, but have enjoyed some of her songs, mainly through the osmosis of hearing them randomly. That being said... does this need to be here? It's a fine pop album, but I don't think it does anything super new or mind-blowing. Some of the songs I find somewhat irritating: if I can go without hearing "Shake It Off" again, with it's weird farting-tuba """"sick"""" beat and white-girl rapping. But other ones are pretty decent. I could weirdly pick out a track that I was pretty sure Jack Antinoff was on ("Out Of The Woods"). That being said, it's fine, nothing offensive, but an album I need to hear before I die? Nah, probably not. Favorite tracks: "Style", "Out Of The Woods"
Sounds great production and vocal wise. I think it's very well made pop music but I don't find it very interesting.
Although overall I believe Taylor Swift is a talented writer, performer, etc., I found this album to be mostly unremarkable. Just a matter of personal preference; not to my liking, that's all. Not bad, just kind of 'meh'.

1980’s pop for people who weren’t alive or old enough to actually experience the 1980’s. It’s reboot culture: “Hey, remember this thing from when we were kids, let’s remake it for the modern generation and squeeze a few more bucks out of it”. The United States is caught in a perpetual cycle of nostalgia and trend recycling, at least in mainstream culture. We’re constantly looking back, trying to relive the glory days, and who can blame us? Shit sucks right now. But you know what? The 1980’s kind of sucked, too. Politically, you can trace a lot of the problems we have today to the 80’s. Culturally, the 80’s was a decade of excess; all style and little substance in the mainstream. It’s an era superficiality, so it makes sense that pop music keeps getting sucked back to it. Making a record that’s a throwback to a sound that’s already lacking depth makes for pretty thin soup, in my opinion. I’m not saying that pop music and mainstream culture doesn’t have its merits, just that we put too much value on it. Were the 80’s great because of the films, tv and music we choose to remember or were they actually great? If you lived through them, you probably remember a lot stuff that really sucked - no one’s out there trying to make a Small Wonder reboot or Silver Spoons: The Movie and look how well trickle-down economics worked for the lower and middle classes. I guess my point is that, if you only remember the “greatest hits” of a period time and disregard the low points and flops, you aren’t getting the full picture. You’re getting a romanticized version, and you’ll end up making the same mistakes as the people that lived through that time. “1989” is exactly that: A superficial homage to a superficial decade. So in that regard, it succeeds. It gives people enough to feel like they missed out on something incredible in 1980’s, but in reality, on a cultural level, the 80’s were no greater or shittier than every decade that’s followed, except for, you know, this one. This one sucks.

Alright. Some jams
As much as I want to hate this one, there are more than a handful of undeniable jams. Taylor knocked it out of the park with a concise album that is the definition of songs that get white people turnt. The easy and catchy lyrics of most of these songs along with the actual music gives white girls all they need to be able to sing along after just one listen… and I guess all I need to as well. I like Track 3: Style and Track 9: Wildest Dreams the most.
Some songs off this album have an insane and addictive energy. It's difficult to not bob your head up and down to the hits. However, some songs feel like pop filler that's more generic than memorable or unique. The whole is mixed super well and feels produced in a complete way. This shouldn't be brushed off as many albums on this list tend to get it wrong. Overall it's a great album to stick in the background to set a fun mood with an occasional "volume-max-singalong" song set in there, but the somewhat generic pop feeling may get old after playing some songs. Favorite: Style
I really dislike the mainstream pop production. It irks me a lot. This early 2010s sound is something I yearn to escape from. Every once in a while, somebody will bring it back and I don't like it. I really hate the drum machine in this as well. This is all to say that I knew a lot of the words to this album before listening to it in its entirety, so that must count for something. Something that has continuously been proven by Taylor and her blockbuster career is that she does have a great voice. I just have never really cared for her music, especially her mainstream corporate work from early in her career. Highlight: 3.

Perfect pop album, it's just great. And to anyone thinking that the lyrics might be bland, I really recommend the Miss Americana documentation on Netflix, where many songs, e.g. Clean, reveal a hidden and much deeper meaning. 5/5
Dull and predictable. Too many songs start off slow and moody but go right back to the same radio-ready anthem beat. Production was childish - everyone's drums in 1989 sounded less fake. Despite the supposed influence of synth-pop, the album just goes through the motions, lacking the heart of that genre. Gonna go put on some Soft Cell, Yazoo, and Erasure to get this noise out of my ears.

After many years of being dismissive of pop music, this was the album mostly responsible for changing my mind. A great pop album is relatively rare but hard to beat for repeat listenability and sheer joy. I love the catchy songwriting, the tragi-uplifting moods, the retro-saturated music, and Taylor's voice which has moved fully (at least temporarily) from country starlet into pop industry force of nature. I have two small complaints: 1) the damage of the "loudness war" is noticeable on some tracks, where there isn't enough dynamic range to let the different elements sit comfortably; 2) on "Shake it Off", the bit where she says "THIS SICK BEAT" is cheesy as fuck. Otherwise, this is perfection from start to finish. Can't wait to hear the re-recorded version assuming it is still on the way. (Also if you've managed to read this far, check out Ryan Adams's cover of this whole album, which is a worthwhile listen.) 5*

God this project is more than 2 years old now. I was shocked seeing my reviews and my thoughts on those albums, I was such a music nerd back then haha. Let's just get straight to review the album, its.... pretty mediocre, sorry swifties. I'm actually quite surprised a lot of Taylor's hits are on this album Blank Space, Bad Blood, and yeah even Shake It Off. I mean they are alright I don't mind them, but the lows on this album are soullessly radio friendly average slop, like the last 7 tracks on this album are forgettable, that's almost half of the album. It would've been better if the album had 12 or 11 songs, yeah sue me I like short albums.
Pretty good. I'm realizing taylor is very repetitive, but this album is full of the singles I liked so that's always a plus. The last song actually impacted me slightly.

Wouldn’t normally listen to Taylor swift but you really can’t fault this as a brilliant pop album. Just misses out on five stars due to my personal taste im not rushing to listen to this again , and maybe unfairly feels it’s To fresh to pass the all time classics tests to put it at the same level as say Thriller.

I'd long lost any interest in pop music by the time this came out, but it was hard to escape. I was working in a university call centre with a bunch of "early 20s uni call centre" types - girls who liked going dancing on weekends, gay guys, dorky chicks - so shit like this was constantly on the radio in the room. This was where "change a word, get a third" was in full swing; I remember reading all about it and how it didn't seem to affect her popularity, even though apparently her authenticity was what had made her unique. I'm guessing what most of her fanbase *really* likes about T-Swift is that she sings about the trials and tribulations (and fantasies!) of "homely" girls. We're all princesses deep down!! We'll conveniently ignore that Taytay is one of the most attractive women on the planet, and that to get famous her rich parents paid her way into a whole heap of modelling and recording work haha. She's super-hot and super-well connected - just like you! In any case this was acceptable enough as pop music? Shake it Off is catchy, the rest didn't really grab me in any way. Modern pop with its retro-but-not-retro synth sound bugs me in a way I can't put my finger on. And it's pretty generic - if I didn't know I was listening to Taylor Swift I wouldn't be able to tell you if this was Lorde or any of those other chicks doing this exact same sound at the time. Guess that's the deal T-Swizzle made when she got Max Martin to write the songs - she went generic and had to hope her established status would carry it into the stratosphere. And it did, so she's got that working for her, but honestly? This is just bog 2010s pop music. It isn't bad, it just doesn't leap out in any way. I dunno, 3/5?

Blank space, style, shake it off, bad blood, and wildest dreams were all HUGE. Welcome to New York is a fantastic opener. Clean is a chill ass closing track. I know places might be my favorite song on here right now. Taylor's best 9/10

I don't get the obsession with her. I'm not just saying that to be musically snobby or contrarian... I just don't get it. She seems like such an annoying "pick me" kind of person in real life. I guess I can give her credit for actually putting the work into writing her own songs. That's fine. I just don't like the bratty entitled shit she comes out with. I was resistant to Taylor Swift for quite some time. She felt like the next Britney or Aguilera. She'll make a few good songs then disappear. I did not realize she was the next Madonna/Micheal Jackson. She continues to put out the best pop of the last 20 years. This particular album produced 7 singles. 4 of which are still radio staples. Super good.

The best pop album of the 2010s. While not influential musically like Thriller was to the 80s or Lorde or Lana Del Ray were in the same decade, it led to countless singles and making TS an pop star for all audiences, not only teen girls. Super well produced, great run time, a soundtrack for a decade, and will stand the test of time.

Got this coincidentally two days after Midnights release. Honestly I love this album. It's all catchy and a hard right turn from her country albums. It's produced very well and the lyrical content matches the Top 40/ Pop genre matches the sound.
This is the Taylor Swift album you've been looking for. Less strummy folk, more polished bubblegum pop, and "Shake It Off" has to be her best song. I do still wonder how Taylor's had her heart broken so many times without dying though.

Daardoor hoor ik nu in dit origineel ook veel beter dat het goede liedjes zijn - iets wat Ryan dus duidelijk ook was opgevallen. Toch zal ik deze zoetige pop productie - in tegenstelling tot Ryans versie - niet snel nog eens aanzetten.

I might have gone in with too high expectations, but it wasn't as good as I expected. I think there are a good amount of really good songs on this album, but they're diluted with overly poppy songs that don't fit super well. Favorite songs on the album were: Welcome to New York, I Wish You Would, and I Know Places
Took all of my willpower to give this a shot. I'm not a fan of this type of pop music to say the least, but since Taylor writes her own songs I figure she's at least a step ahead of her competition. The hits you've heard because they've been playing in every grocery store and on every other commercial for the last 8 years. The filler was better than I expected and when she falls back on her strengths (earnest lyrics, straightforward melodies) the songs are good.

I guess it is reasonable that I should listen to this album at least once in my life. The album starts out poppy and enjoyable, effervescent. But by the third song, Style, I was starting to feel like maybe I'd had enough sugar. By the time I got to "Shake It Off" which is objectively catchy I was already over the whole album. I need to clear my palette to see if I could enjoy the rest of the album if I take it in small doses. OK back from lunch. No, still not loving it. It's solid; I can't deny this is top flight pop. Maybe I'm just too old to vibe along with the bitter "you're gonna be sorry for what you did" and deep self-centeredness that lies beneath the candy shell of this perfected, hooky, pretty music. Best thing you can do for yourself is forgive and forget. Indeed I wish I had figured that out sooner. Also, everything isn't always about you. Even if you are Taylor Swift.

okay - pretty great album
This is a funny album for me. Back when it came out I remember the sentiment was this was the end for Taylor. She went pop and people weren't happy. But I've always liked the singles and radio tracks. This album hit at a spot in my life where it was ever present and I liked that. I was on a road trip blasting shake it off barreling down the highway and singing along. At the time idk of I listened to much more than metal. Out of the woods is the only real dud in the track list. That one gets an instant skip from now on but everything else is wonderful. I like singer songwriter Taylor more but pop Taylor has a place in my heart

I was not looking forward to listening to this. I like the style of "Style". The rest of it seems to be middle of the road pop tosh. Completely forgettable, moderately inoffensive pink noise. The sort of thing you'd expect to hear at a school disco.

Pas mon style habituel, mais la production est parfaite pour le genre. Un beau renouveau qui en a surpris plusieurs. Je pense que ce qui m'a le plus surpris à la lecture sur cet album est de découvrir que les hits ont été produits par Max Martin, producteur Suédois qui est à l'origine de tellement de gros hits de la pop des années 2000. Un bon choix pour surprendre tout le monde.

Music for the I-Phone-y generation. Featuring self-obsessed lyrics that sound like they were written on the back a fag packet by a 14 year old kid during detention, chewing gum vocals married to robotic synthesized music, this is about as tedious as expected. It is catchy pop music mind, so I suppose it's no surprise it's a big selling album. But after several sessions of therapy, I think I'm at peace following the ordeal of listening to it.

I've been a Swiftie for more than a decade now and have loved her evolution as an artist. 1989 represented a shift away from the country sounds from her earlier albums and was hinted at in Red. This is a direction I've absolutely loved as she matured as a songwriter. I love this album. The songs are absolute bangers and Style is a top 5 maybe top 3 favourite song of mine from her work. Yeah Shake It Off is silly and stupid, but she always has a few of those on her albums. Every time I relisten to songs from this album I discover some small new thing. Also, perhaps most important, I am the same age as Taylor so I really identify with her themes and topics that she explores in her songwriting. When this album came out, I could feel what she was going through in her life since I was going through similar things in my own life. I've always felt a very strong connection to her themes as she captures what it's like to be at that age.

As insane as it sounds, I don’t think I’ve ever heard an entire song by Taylor Swift. I’m not of the demographic that usually likes her music, so I’ve never felt a need to try it. I know she has country influences, which also has put me off it. I’m cautiously optimistic for this album. It certainly has a upbeat start with the first track. It’s a very well put together pop album and I enjoyed much more than I thought I would. I also recognized the beginnings of a couple of songs. I also think how the album flows from uptempo to slower is very well done. And to top it all off, the homage to 80s pop is great and hits well with me, as I love 80s pop in particular. It's catchy, but doesn't have nearly the depth of her more recent albums which I find excellent. She's developed a ton since this was dropped in 2014-- and I think for the better.

Bubbly, catchy pop songs. Pleasant enough to listen to. Top notch for contemporary pop, but it mostly left me a little cold. Fave Songs: Bad Blood, I Know Places, This Love, Wildest Dreams, I Wish You Would, Shake It Off
My kids played this to death, with no objections from me. As good as, or better than, the pop albums from my youth e.g. Madonna, Nik Kershaw. WIldest Dreams in particular is a banger
Some well written pop songs. A whole album of it is too much though, and some of the weaker tracks can get cringeworthy

This is the first album from this project that I've already listened to! I've been leaving notes to myself about each album just so I remember them better, but no need to do that for this album because I've already listened to it 100 times. This is an easy 5 stars. Part of me feels like I should give it 4 because there are definitely a few songs I listened to once and basically never again, and I actually hate the song Bad Blood lol. But there are so many highs on this album, and when it's good, it's so good, so I can't help but give it a 5. My favorite songs on this album are New Romantics, Shake it Off, and All You Had to Do Was Stay.
Solid Taylor Swift album. Her vocals are great as usual but I found the lyrics and melodies repeated way too much and became annoying to listen to. It felt like most of the songs could be a minute shorter without losing any of their substance.

It is impossible to deny the talent of Taylor Swift. It is equally difficult to deny how good the entirety of this album is.
Pop Perfection. From a country singer none the less. She consistently defies expectations and refuses to stay in her box. The songwriting is as exceptional as ever and the jump in genres is effortless. Its fun, confident, playful and forward thinking. The girl is brilliant and one of the best songwriters of our her generations. One day she'll do a grime album. and that'll be great as well. 5/5
This was very unexpected for me, but I liked it very much. It's still a commercial pop sound, but it has some roots that differentiate the songs from what I was expecting to listen to it.

Not my favorite Taylor album, but this is still full of good hits and quality cuts that don't get radio play. This feels like a 4 or 4.5 musically for me, and I didn't want to over rate it...but the songs I wasn't familiar with were so good, and that plus the importance of this shift in her sound and how she was percieved gives me enough reason to bring it to a 5. || This album specifically makes me wish you would get certain connected albums in order...or at least within a semi-close timeframe so that listeners could better compare the evolution in an artist's sound. That would make me much more willing to get excited about some of the artists that have frequently appearances (looking at you bowie and costello).
Hmm going into this thought this was a 1 star. However the production on the album in genuinely good and the singles are at least as good as some of 80s pop or rock I've given 3 stars to. Still massively not a fan as she's so manufactured and bland both in personality and musical content but can see why some like her. See a lot of reviews here criticizing all lyrics being about the same thing but same can be said for a lot of albums. Overall 2.8 Technically good but overall soulless
Full of catchy, well written and well produced pop songs, 1989 need be nothing more or nothing less than just that, a great pop album. There's stuff lurking in the lyrics but I'm not enough of a Tay fan to get most of the references. I really like it though.
Pure pop perfection. Every song is catchy and the production is spot on. I tried to fault it but found myself foot tapping and singing along to every track.

Decent pop, not very exiting this album
Better than Evermore (the album generated half a year ago)
Starts of surprisingly well. Good production, catchy tunes. But after a while, the songs start to look like each other and I start losing interest. Preferred it over Evermore.
Pretty catchy synth-pop, and a fun direction for T swizzle, if a pretty damn safe one. But my god, I wasn't expecting this to be the nostalgia bomb it was for me this morning. I haven't listened to any of this record aside from Blank Space since 2014. Suddenly I'm back in my freshman dorm, with all the excitement and stress of the first semester of college. Absolutely wild. The pure flashback it gave me tips this up from a very high 3 to a 4.
The key here is the nonsingles, as I think is the case with Taylor generally. Huge ups to Clean in this regard, interesting instruments on that one. Of course the singles themselves indicate a sonic shift for Taylor that is much more pop-centered, and a wide spread there. Probably a 4.5, but still deserving of a 5 for how prominent this album was during its release.
Almost every song is a coming of age tale and a scene from a light romantic comedy - love songs for the early 20s, care free yet surprisingly lucid - this album is well crafted, well written, restrained yet pumping throughout - stylishly and well produced. It’s also paced just right - and I enjoyed every minute of it. Never thought in my life I’d give a Taylor Swift album 5 stars but here we are.
Dit album voelt me te weinig spontaan aan. Elke noot, elk instrument lijkt tot op de milliseconde getimed om het 'zo goed mogelijk' te doen klinken en de massa aan te spreken. Het zijn catchy nummers, maar wanneer 'pop' te 'pop' wordt haak ik wel af.
