Reviews (page 10 of 11)

Well produced pop with a couple of hyper catchy tracks which will get stuck in your head. Really not for me.

Ready Salted Music fr

Style is a good song I guess

She sells out stadiums? How? Why? Based on this album, I can't see why she's as big as she is.

It's 2016 and I am back at infant school age kids' birthday parties. The album with the two Swift songs I know. Shake it Off is a bop. Most of the rest just kind of blend together into the perfect polished production. I dunno, I just don't get adults listening to this regularly. I'll row that back slightly - unless they were kids or teenagers when it came out. I still go back to those Erasure records occasionally with joy and revel in their polished poppityness.

Style aside, there aren't any memorable tracks on this album apart from the ones I've heard endless times on their own (Shake it Off/Out of the Woods).

I recognize the significance of this album both in the realm of modern pop music and as a landmark of Taylor's career, and there are a few songs here I do like quite a bit (namely Style and Clean, Blank Space is good too when the mood is right), but those tracks aside this album is mostly boring or annoying. I can't STAND Shake It Off, the other singles are kinda weak, and the album tracks I've never heard of are...album tracks I've never heard of for a reason. I don't think I'll need to revisit this one. 2.5/5

I've never listened to full Taylor Swift albums, so if context is important on this one, I'm very sorry but that got lost on me. My main takeaway from this one is it's a well written pop album without much in terms of challenge. Taylor Swift has a nice inoffensive voice and musical sensibility. That being said, nothing about it makes me think it should be a mandatory album to listen to before I die; it's a radio friendly unit shifter. I'm gonna go with a 2 here. This is the Diet Coke of music; if it's the only thing available, you're not going to be angry, but you're not going to like it either.

I only knew the singles. I had to check how old she was when this was released aa some of the lyrics were a bit teenagey at times. Won't knowingly listen again

I hadn't knowingly listened to Taylor Swift's music until this album, 1989. I downloaded it along with Ryan Adam's interpretation of his track by track album covering 1989. It is clear I am not a Swifty and not her target audience, as she fills the void left from Britney, Christina and Selena for the financially precious white, middle class, preteen girl target group that seems to drive music business nowadays, but Taylor is above the others because she writes her own songs! Apparently, she has the cred as she entered the "prestigious" Songwriters Hall of Fame four years before this album, so she's clearly gifted and a true talent...for country music. On 1989, it's such a synth-pop mush, it hides any kind of "elite" songwriting and all I hear is a bunch of electronic, dance poppy robotic shit with so little substance it lowers it's standards to appeal to young girls and their gullible parents who are so proudly supportive of their daughter's musical tastes. Blonde, beautiful, rich..."she's such a great role model", let's throw more money her way when she's on tour. P.S. by comparison, the Ryan Adams album is the stripped down version of 1989, at times sounding like, Springsteen covering Taylor Swift. An alt-country, indie rock record that bares no similarities to the Swift record at all, which is a good thing as you would never know these songs are covers. Hey wait, it's not a bad album after all.

Not my favourite album by Taylor Swift. I definitely prefer the one recorded with Bon Iver, whose influence is very noticeable on "folklore". On the other hand we have "1989", an album made out of overplayed singles and just uninteresting and forgettable songs. If I would have to make an honest summary of the album, I would say - it's overproduced cotton candy, whatever that actually means, because I'm just throwing some words at the keyboard. 5 words, I did not like it. I will happily move on to the next album.

This is apparently where every Taylor Swift song I've ever heard came from. I was unaware some of these songs were by Taylor Swift.

I appreciate the huge success this album achieved, it's just a bit too modern pop for my tastes. Couple of tolerable tracks, but overall, meh.

Meh 4/10

I just don’t like pop that much and have never connected with Taylor. Given this is her poppiest and most mainstream album I just can’t get into it. It’s just not for me.

This was an album I couldn't wait for it to be over. It's like being slowly smothered by a pink cuddly cloud that's overly cheery and dreamy. Pros: + Taylor Swift surely can sing +The production quality is great + Some songs are catchy... Cons: -...but they overstay their welcome - The hooks are repetitive and get annoying after a while - It's like a teen drama film in music format and wouldn't surprise me if some of the songs have been used in such a film - The lyrics get tiresome after a while. In short this wasn't for me at all. I usually don't notice the lyrics that much but I made a concious effort and it was a mistake. It's like watching a teen drama. Not trying to be insulting but maybe if I was a teenage girl I would like it. I've never been one so I couldn't say.

Not my thing.

Pop hell. Catchy. Not my thing.

I definitely love a good pop album, but for me, this isn't it.

Score: 30 We've made it to the complete antithesis of artistry; making music with the sole purpose of making hits and winning grammys. Produced to the max, designed to be as catchy as possible. So is it any good? No not really. Some songs are good like blank space and style. Every other song is middle of the road or insufferable. Welcome to new york, shake it off and bad blood fit into this category. The production on shake it off deserves its own little paragraph because it is atrocious. I've heard better horn sound effects on children's toys at target. If the drums are played by a real human being i would be shocked. The clacking drumstick sound is so mind numbing and it's persists throughout the entire track and once you notice it it's game over. The bridge is cringe. Bad blood is just a bad song period, everyone knows that. Taylor never sounds like she's trying at all with her vocal performance besides maybe a few moments in wildest dreams and clean. Her voice never sounds bad but it fuels the soulless feel to this album. Nothing about it feels organic. The lyrics are vapid and I don't believe they are sincere, even as generic as they are. I wanted it to end multiple times

Completely junk food pop. I honestly don't get why some folks are like "Taylor Swift is really a different breed", there is so much more pop music I'd rather listen to. I find everything about it vapid, surface level, and completely polished that nothing interesting remains. Nothing here is what I listen to music for. That said, I get why people would like it. It ticks a lot of the boxes for what a lot of people like to listen to. But my god, it's a 1 in enjoyment but I can't in good conscious rate it that low, but this is my damnest 2 thus far.

I think my issue with Taylor Swift is she feels very distant from the rest of the music itself. It feels like a lot of care went into the production of this music but it lacks real emotion from the delivery.

I can imagine that, when for example played in the supermarket, some of these songs will put a smile on my face. As an album I think it's just overproduced shit without any emotion.

Shake It Off erottuu radikaalisti parhaana biisinä.

Can't say I didn't try.

First Taylor Swift album I've listened to. Probably the last too. Just good shit pop really.

I was toe tapping. This is so embarrassing. I hope the Spotify algorithm was sleeping when I listened to this.

Good for what it is. Do not listen to for more than 30 minutes at a time

Not a Swiftie, but have enjoyed some of her songs, mainly through the osmosis of hearing them randomly. That being said... does this need to be here? It's a fine pop album, but I don't think it does anything super new or mind-blowing. Some of the songs I find somewhat irritating: if I can go without hearing "Shake It Off" again, with it's weird farting-tuba """"sick"""" beat and white-girl rapping. But other ones are pretty decent. I could weirdly pick out a track that I was pretty sure Jack Antinoff was on ("Out Of The Woods"). That being said, it's fine, nothing offensive, but an album I need to hear before I die? Nah, probably not. Favorite tracks: "Style", "Out Of The Woods"

Although overall I believe Taylor Swift is a talented writer, performer, etc., I found this album to be mostly unremarkable. Just a matter of personal preference; not to my liking, that's all. Not bad, just kind of 'meh'.

I really dislike the mainstream pop production. It irks me a lot. This early 2010s sound is something I yearn to escape from. Every once in a while, somebody will bring it back and I don't like it. I really hate the drum machine in this as well. This is all to say that I knew a lot of the words to this album before listening to it in its entirety, so that must count for something. Something that has continuously been proven by Taylor and her blockbuster career is that she does have a great voice. I just have never really cared for her music, especially her mainstream corporate work from early in her career. Highlight: 3.

1-2. Ich bin gnädig und gebe noch die 2.

Dull and predictable. Too many songs start off slow and moody but go right back to the same radio-ready anthem beat. Production was childish - everyone's drums in 1989 sounded less fake. Despite the supposed influence of synth-pop, the album just goes through the motions, lacking the heart of that genre. Gonna go put on some Soft Cell, Yazoo, and Erasure to get this noise out of my ears.

Okay album, not a fan of hers...

0/100 Not mine

I’m not much of a fan, but it’s not as bad as some people say it is, honestly. I can absolutely understand why people like it, but it’s not my type of music.

God this project is more than 2 years old now. I was shocked seeing my reviews and my thoughts on those albums, I was such a music nerd back then haha. Let's just get straight to review the album, its.... pretty mediocre, sorry swifties. I'm actually quite surprised a lot of Taylor's hits are on this album Blank Space, Bad Blood, and yeah even Shake It Off. I mean they are alright I don't mind them, but the lows on this album are soullessly radio friendly average slop, like the last 7 tracks on this album are forgettable, that's almost half of the album. It would've been better if the album had 12 or 11 songs, yeah sue me I like short albums.

It’s fine, just not really my ~vibe~. I like shake it off and out of the woods tho 👍

I don't get the obsession with her. I'm not just saying that to be musically snobby or contrarian... I just don't get it. She seems like such an annoying "pick me" kind of person in real life. I guess I can give her credit for actually putting the work into writing her own songs. That's fine. I just don't like the bratty entitled shit she comes out with. Ooo you're gunna write a diss track about Katy Perry because she stole your boyfriend that's actually a gross creepbag? You should be grateful she took that bullet for you, you fucking moron. And let's be honest, you would have dated him for like 6 minutes anyway and then moved on to the next poor schlub for songwriting fodder. The complete inability to relate to or care about an artist and their life makes it quite difficult to enjoy their music. Not for me.

Objectively catchy pop, just not my thiiing

Thought I’d hate it, but there are some pretty good pop tunes, along with a lot of not so great stuff.

OK, fine, I bobbed my head to a few of these catchy pop hits... doesn't mean I felt right doing so! It's Taylor's world, she's just letting us sit in it.

She is not bad but it's not Rock.

Nothing special really

Probably Taylor Swift's best album. Which amounts to a 2/5 grade on this app. Pop music has seen far more interesting and talented female singers in the past (Dusty Springfield, ABBA, Madonna...). It also has more interesting and talented pop singers in the present moment (Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa...). And it will also have others in the future... Number of albums left to review or just listen to:  more than 800 , I've temporarily lost count here Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens:  approximately a half so far  Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: a quarter Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): the last quarter (including this one--I mean... seriously, guys...)

I was not looking forward to listening to this. I like the style of "Style". The rest of it seems to be middle of the road pop tosh. Completely forgettable, moderately inoffensive pink noise. The sort of thing you'd expect to hear at a school disco.

Bof.

Hmm not really for me. It was better than I thought it was gonna be, but it’s still too pop

Better than I had expected. There were a couple of tracks I liked and a few I didn't. Blank Space and Style were good, and you can't help but dance to Shake it Off.

Solid Taylor Swift album. Her vocals are great as usual but I found the lyrics and melodies repeated way too much and became annoying to listen to. It felt like most of the songs could be a minute shorter without losing any of their substance.

Not very interesting, unlike evermore which was more enjoyable

This is popular. Not with me.

Decent pop, not very exiting this album

impressively generic top 40 breakup teenage pop. the sort of music the mafia would play while they "take care" of you

First time I’ve willingly listened to T Swift. The songs are actually ok, but feels too overplayed for me to properly enjoy. 3/10

This is a very generic pop album. I remember hating shake it off when it came out but I never listened to it all until now. Welcome to NY was trash. Some songs are ok like Blank Space and Style but overall I didn’t find much impressive about this album. My friend who is a huge Taylor swift fan said she thinks this is her worst album

Forgettable, except I gotta say I love "Shake It Off."

Not for me

Best Taytay record Fav tracks: - I Wish You Would - Wildest Dreams - Out Of The Woods Least fav: - Bad Blood

“Deeply weird, feverishly emotional, wildly enthusiastic.”

A soft, twirly album with a couple of catchy beats and songs, but too bubble gum for me

It's okay but not her best work.

Vissa va basic men bra som typ weezer, flesta va int

Quintessentially average pop with just a hint of musicality to let you know that someone working on this had greater ambitions

Not really my thing. And its not that i dont like pop music there's just a bunch of other pop artists i prefer. Nothing really memorable here, Shake it Off is the most ear wormy song and its ok.

good for running.

Standard pop fare. Shake It Off is catchy, otherwise meh.

Sounds much the same as modern pop, though less bombastic and generally lower-key. A lot of the lyrics I think reinforce bad relationship habits and hearing Swift sing as if she can't just have anyone she wants at a moment's notice beggars belief. Not my cup of tea but it was easy enough listening.

Really not my taste. Extra star because it is well executed

Some undeniable hits on this one but just not my kinda thing

I've hard like 60% of this album in grocery stores, malls, or when I'm with someone that only listens to Top 40. It's good enough, the people that wrote, produced, and put together all of the songs for her to sing did a good enough job on a technical level. But at the end of the day it's Focus Group music. Not for me, it's cold, emotionless, appeal to the masses music, there's no art here; only marketing.

It's scary how easy to listen it is.

The Swedish album. ABBA (who I love) have a lot to answer for. A quick poll of a few teenagers who were in the sweet spot for this album when it was released: they remember nothing. Pop, good Pop at least, must be memorable and enduring. This album fails on the second count. (I’ll pass on the first.) Nobody argues if the new Taylor Swift album is better than the last, because no one remembers the last. (This may be a failing of autobiographical Pop too…)

Now This is A challenge for me! I always linked Taylor Swift to Manufactured Pop or Country. So Listening to this Album for the first time! (My Daughter had suggested that there is more to Taylor than meets the eye but I have to be convinced. After Listening to this I am NOT CONVINCED! derivative manufactured pop for the teenage girl I fear! Can't say I've been converted by this. Best song on the Album... so hard to chose but if I had to chose I suppose Champagne Problems sort of breaks the ManPop mould a bit. but as I say not a fan or convert. Okay I suppose reluctantly I might concede that "Shake It Off" is a goodish pop song but still not convinced that this rates as an LP to hear before I Die!

I don't like her voice. The songwriting is generic and heavy-handed. The music is extremely overproduced. In short, it sucks. 3/10

Jamen godt produceret og sårn. Hitslasker. Ikke et album je vil høre i fuld længde igen.

Meh some ok some obnoxious

Bland and a bit repetitive. Not for me

I have no idea of how to rate this album It's well-produced pop for the masses, but I don't really find anything interesting here. "I Know Places" is kind of all right, though.

Not really my speed, but she can write a hook. First album where I had never gone out of my way to listen to any of the sons, but had already heard all of them.

Just tpop

"Shake it off" es adictivo as fuck y te hace mover el piecito. "Bad Blood" me parece un muy buen tema aunque sigue siendo muy american pop para lo que puedo tolerar. Después de eso, todo va en picada.

No denying she’s a decent songwriter that knows how to write a catchy hook. She is not a good singer, though, and I find her lyrics to be insipid and catering to the LCD. Not for me.

Nothing unpleasant or offensive about it but nothing poetic or profound either. I don't understand the appeal.

no me gusta taylor swift

*listened before the project* Stop playing with me, ok? It’s the worst even in synth-pop. When I first heard “Shake It Off” in high school, I almost threw up. What’s that burp-like beat? Pretty gross. And the lyrics? Better not to mention. Cut: Blank Space

Chicken sauté with white rice on a plastic plate.

If you ever needed proof that popular does not necessarily equal quality, I present T Swift

Dear lord, its so boring, that was rough and im glad its over.

I thought one Taylor Swift album was pushing it but now 2?! Wtf?! Is this just the albums teenagers should listen to before they turn 20? Even that's pushing it.

The GOATed industry plant, this album is so shallow and boring. Overly produced and mechanical sounding, lacks any depth or soul. Maybe if I was a teenager this would resonate with me but I am far from the target for this slop. It is just inoffensive over produced radio pop, I know she is a mega star but this is pretty boring

They really put this in the Library of Congress for preservation huh

Shake it off ist ja mal wirklich unerträglich. Blank Space ist ganz nett. Ansonsten vollkommen belanglos.

With all due respect, skipping today’s album

Yikes. I need a palate-cleanser after that. 0.5/5.0: Unlistenable

Listening to 1989 by taylor swift cause of the 1001 albums thing, im not complaining about its inclusion cause this album was incredibly popular and an important time capsule for the mid-2010s but hoooooooly crap this album blows Her lyricism is poo, the production is poo, her vocals are indistinguishable from song to song and it just sounds like music Disney adults would like Tbf i was never the target audience for this but i feel like the more recent pop stars have been so much more interesting musically and lyrically and vocally and various other terms that end in -lly than taylor

A constructed "perfect pop record" that sounds completely dead, cold and hollow to me. Lyrics may be based on personal experience, but they still sound generic and repetitive to me. The music is pseudo retro 80s, which sure fits the title. It still feels cheap, generic, and simplistic without any kind of edge that could make it interesting. Just awful.

Style is a banger. Clean is fine. The rest of this is HORRIBLE

I have heard worse. Not my cup of tea.

Taylor Swift was born in 1989 on December the 13th, so she doesn't have a clue about what the 80s really were. Hell, she's too young to even remember most of the 90s that well. So this album should be called: "2000s something, when I could actually understand the world I was living in". Anyway, this title could still be a tribute for a decade she likes a lot musically, but that also doesn't seem the case. Her style is generic post 2010s harmless barebone pop, a thing that wasn't really a genre back in '89, even Roxettes have more bite, better production, fuller arrangements and interesting hooks than this mass homogenized product of an album. No, I think that the title of the album is in relation to the year she was born, meaning that before that date nothing was worth listening to or living, because she wasn't there. Listen Taylor, even you aren't so important as to believe that your year of birth should be an album's name or an extremely crucial date, this is entitlement of biblical proportions. We don't care, and personally I don't even like your sorry excuse for a living that you call music. This boring record shouldn't be on this list, or on any list of people that love music.

The worst part isn't the dumb singing on "Blank Space", nor the artless rhymes of "Bad Blood", nor the lyrics of "Shake it Off", where Taylor claims that she's unfazed when you're annoyed by her annoying behavior. No, the worst part is that she considers this fun, maybe even cute. She's repackaging her immaturity as pop anthems. There are some okay album tracks hidden in here. But the hits, the stuff you hear on the radio, are terrible. This is Millennial brainrot. This is a boot sashaying on a human face forever.

Of course I am aware of Taylor Swift's existence, and it's possible I have heard some songs by her - but I wouldn't have known it since it would have just been randomly in public. I've never actually proactively played a song by her. I did hear a bunch of middle school girls sing some of her songs in a school talent show back in the day when my kids were in school. I think that was off her first album. At the time I just thought that she was whoever was the latest person that the middle school girls were obsessed with and it would fade over time - but she definitely seems to have more staying power. So, I'm curious what the hype is all about - especially since this is supposedly her best record. After first listen, I'm pretty sure I've heard "Shake It Off" and "Bad Blood" before - but I don't really like those. "Out of the Woods" sounds A LOT like Lorde. I looked it up - Lorde used Jack Antonoff as her producer for the Melodrama album (which I reviewed on here), so that might be the connection since he is the same guy that produced this specific song. This caused me to go back and re-listen to the songs I liked from Lorde's album. What I like about some of Lorde's songs is she is a little more vulnerable and confessional in her lyrics and singing style - whereas the only thing Taylor seems to be confessing is that her boyfriends are all the bad guys and she's never done anything wrong. It's all so black and white. So, my summary is 21 year old Lorde was writing much more mature lyrics than 25 year old Taylor. "I Wish You Would" is one of the most vulnerable songs on the album but I just noticed it's one of the least played song on Spotify - so clearly her fans don't like that side of her. Same with "Clean". "Bad Blood" vocals sounds kind of like Lorde to me. On the 2nd time through, I starting realizing how forgettable / generic most of this sounds to me - since I didn't remember hearing the songs from the first time. After the 3rd listen, I did end up liking "Clean" and "I Know Places" (the last 2 songs on the album) - since they feel more authentic to me and the production is a little more spare with room to breathe. So that's 2 Taylor Swift songs added to my Spotify playlists where it was 0 before. That's progress, right? Serious question - did 25 year old Taylor Swift think about anything else but boys and relationships? Have her interests and lyrical focus expanded in the 12 years since then? I understand she's getting married, so I wonder if she's gonna run out of things to write about if she can't write about boyfriends who (usually) screwed her over - i guess until something happens with her current relationship with the football guy. Maybe she does write about other things - but it's not apparent on this particular album. As a contrast... Fiona Apple wrote a very self-reflective song like "Criminal" at the young age of 20, Sarah McLachlan wrote "Possession" at 25, Stevie Nicks wrote "Landslide" at 27. All of those artist's song writing (and many others) is so much better, and memorable, and thought provoking in my opinion. I do respect that she writes her own lyrics - apparently with help from the producers. So I give her credit for that. Unfortunately, the lyrics generally don't make me feel anything positive or negative nor think about anything new or different. And most of the music doesn't really interest me, it sounds too programmed and polished. I think this is my problem with most modern pop music. I don't think Taylor is going to be too upset about my 1 star review - she's just gonna shake it off and will be just fine :) Liked songs on Spotify: 2/13 Rating: 1/5

Hate all you want (and I will) but the New York song is basically the core of every song about New York ever. No matter how artistic you want to make living in big city, it remains an insufferable song concept. I'd MAYBE be interested in hearing about it from somebody who's from there, but the "we're not in INDIANA anymore <3 #NewYorkPizza #Sbarro" vibe makes me claw at my own eyes with the hunger of a starving rat. I oscillate back and forth. I hate this. I hate who markets it, I hate hearing it constantly everywhere I go, despite never requesting it. On the other hand, I don't want to sit here and be the guy who writes a negative review of Despicable Me 4 because it "lacked the precocious vitality of its predecessors." It's lame to over intellectualize fluff. Sure, I can tell you that the music is overproduced bubble gum garbage that is probably focus grouped to be addictive. I can explain that the lyrics are like early AI's interpretation of a high school level sonnet. It's all bad, but there is some value to it as the kids seem to dig it. My neck isn't so bearded that I would deny a kid their fast food multimedia mass marketed music experience. If my daughter asked me to take her to listen to it, I'd oblige and wince through the experience. Keep that in mind as I ferociously slap a zero on this. 0 HIGHLIGHTS: HOO ONE PIZZA PIE HOT TO ORDER

Empty-headed nonsense.

YGTBFKM. Nobody, and I mean nobody needs to listen to this utter friggin' crap. 0 stars. Negative stars. FU for putting this on here.

seems fairly generic. not sure why it's so celebrated.

Before Listening : Oh this one will be interesting. I never thought I would be listening to a Taylor Swift album but here we go. After Listening : Wow, I don’t even really wanna talk about it. At some point I started asking myself when it was gonna end but there was always somehow another song left. Funnily enough, the only song I kinda enjoyed was “Shake it Off” but that’s not really saying much since all the other songs set the bar really low. I’m still willing to give Taylor Swift another chance but wow, this was not a good start.

Absolutely the fuck not. If I could give this egomaniacal bitch zero stars, I would.

The blandest swill available, and the masses are lapping it up. It’s the soylent green of music.

oh nah i don’t mess w taylor but this era was good ngl

Bad weekend.

Made it two songs in. Just can't...

Hard to listen to this swill. Who the fuck thinks I need to listen to this before I die?

I'm sure some people like it, not for me though thanks.

I get why people like this. I can see it’s fine but for some reason it doesn’t resonate with me. Pop music is kind of a dead spot and just not super enjoyable for me. I’ve never really listened to swift before but clearly she’s very popular. I think society just recycles through these pop stars every few years, it feels like she’s the biggest one ever but I bet it felt like that with a bunch of the others too. I will acknowledge what the masses like I tend to disregard. I really did listen to this and I gave it a chance but it’s just not very good. (To me) Just boring

dross and forgettable

"Alexa, write me a contemporary pop album with an occasional 80's style synth sound. Make it sound unique, but also so familiar that anyone will be able to at least hum along with it the first time they hear it." I'm sure there's more to it, but is sure doesn't sound like it. I'm completely out of the hype loop on this one

Ayo the fact that she hasn’t spoken up about ICE using her music in one of their clips when she so actively pursues other people for the same thing speaks volumes. Also all her shit is ass and bland.

Yeah, nah. It’s just slop I think, Blank Space is a highlight and for that reason it’s branched into a 1.5. I forgot how sick of Bad Blood I’d gotten. I’ve got bad blood with Bad Blood. The rest of the tracks are one and the same. 1.5(just) / 5.0 Best Song: Bad Blood

Ich weigere mich es anzuhören (I want to give 0 but I can’t, so I give 1)

I’m just gonna skate Skate Skate Skate Skate Skate Skate Skate Tony Hawk! Tony Hawk! I don’t have much to say other than: how do they pick em, these artists that get to be bigger than God?

Prior to today, I don't think I've ever voluntarily listened to a Taylor Swift song. By that, I mean I’ve never opened a music player/streaming service, went to a Swift song, and clicked play. This is primarily because I have involuntarily heard too many of her songs too many times because of her complete proliferation throughout society. "Maybe this won’t be so bad, there’s no way they can all be bad" I lie to myself as I bring up the album and scan through the track list. "Look, you don’t even recognize the title of the opener". I then hit play and realize I very much do in fact remember "Welcome to New York" and I had just undone my brain’s years-worth of efforts to memory-hole this piece of garbage. Every song that I recognized prior to listening to this was terrible. "Blank Space" was worse than I remember it being, and my undying hatred for "Shake it Off" has never died from the many bus rides during middle school that this song plagued. Outside of the ones that everyone knows, most of the other tracks are still very dull synthpop songs which are not helped by the fact that Taylor is one of the least favorite vocalists that I have listened. I’ll hesitantly admit that "This is Love" might actually be a good song. Nevertheless, it’s not going to save this album from the fact that everything else is terrible.

Average White.

Commercial, uninspired garbage for people with the EQ of a teenager in angst.

Terrible yo

Like drowning in a sea of bubblegum.

Okay, I've never really put much thought into Taylor Swift before. Her discography has always been on my listenlist just due to pop culture relevance. I've heard most of the hits on the radio or somewhere else. I'm going to try and do my best to reserve judgement and listen to the album without prejudice (despite my immediate feeling of dread upon seeing the tracklist" Blank Space - "the worst is yet to come" Uncanny foreshadowing by Taylor here. This was definitely one of the worst listening experiences I've had to endure recently, and I just did the 10 Electro Swing albums! You can tell Taylor knows her audience - middle school aged white girls. Lots of very cringe lyrics and immature relationship comments throughout this entire release. That's not even the worst part of it though, it's the production. Or I should say lack of thereof, because it's so boring and uninspired that I've without a doubt heard better sounding instrumentals from soundcloud and bandcamp! After I had an involuntary shudder reaction as a result to the cringeworthy opening track, I thought it would be funny to track my shudder count for this album. None of these were intentional or forced either. Shudder count: 8 Most tolerable song on the album was I Know Places

No thanks

I didn't like this at all. Welcome to New York was an actively bad song. How You Get the Girl is the only song I think I could have listened to all the way through. The issue isn't that they're bad songs, they're just not good songs. They have nice build ups that crescendo into nothingness. Nothing burger maxing. They're boring, middle-of-the-road pop. 1/5 stars.

Terrible

Since there's nothing interesting about the songs, let me share a story. Taylor came to my city, Rio de Janeiro, a few years ago. The mayor shut down the city, lit up the Christ the Redeemer statue, and a bunch of people, in 50-degree celsius heat (122 °F), gathered at a soccer stadium to watch this bitter-whited-ass girl sing using playback. Anyway, a little bit of everything happened on the day of her show (at least one of them, I don't know how many there were): There was a blackout in the poor part of the city (remember, it was 50 degrees Celsius), a fan died of overheating and dehydration during the show... in short, this bitch's presence in Rio was something to forget.

208/1089 - I know she's very popular but I can't think of a single song I've heard from Taylor Swift other than the "shake shake shake" one which was shit, hopefully the rest of it isn't like that. After listening: Huh? This is just corny, bland, 80s music with modern production techniques. At least she's a good singer I think. Can't tell with all of the modern effects making things abnormally clean. Didn't enjoy this one at all. Non-list recommendation: I am using one of my free three album recommendations from the Charlatans notes - (Choose Your Weapon - Hiatus Kaiyote).

I don't get it! I don't get why she's so lauded. It's average, actually fairly dull pop music. Look, I'm not the biggest fan of pop music, but when it's interesting, different, a little subversive, I can get behind it. When it's safe and monotonous and over produced then I'm just not interested and this is definitely in the latter camp. I'd even take Adele over this, and that's saying something!

I’m sure she a nice young woman and certainly appreciated by the Swifties but personally I found this awful

For sure an album of all time

Me suena a plástico.

Get over him girl

for the meme of it

Those spice-less food memes sure are accurate. It is extremely unfair that other "Pop" artists and projects fall into the same category as her. And I'm not even talking about 70's pioneers or 80's kings or queens of the genre, but contemporary acts that get a minuscule percentage of the attention that she gets...

I enjoyed the previous "evermore" Taylor swift album we had on the list, so was willing to go into this with an open mind. I was pretty surprised by how many songs I recognised, but I don't really like any of them! It's so teenage girl pop. I'm definitely not the target demographic. I kept checking to see how long was left. All signs of a 1 for me. Sorry Taylor, I do think she can write, which is more than a lot of her contemporaries can say, but this album just ain't for me. I'll stick with evermore 1

Could give a shit

Lots of her most iconic songs that are wide enough in appeal to say even less than just silence. For being so lyrically focused, the emotional content seems to be as dense as a walmart valentines day card. Lots of focus on decentralized general want, revolving around simple wishes of keeping a romantic connection, although the order and arrangement of the songs does not suggest any conscious consideration on her part. "This love is good/This love is bad" Given the level of the popularity of this album it makes sense to have on this list, now I can be an educated hater.

Average songs that are over produced.

Blinding headache after 3 tracks. Felt like I was stuck in a shopping mall.

Why is this even on here?

I don't see how Taylor Swift ever became popular or how millions of people unironically like her music. The lyrics are uninspired and basically every song has the exact same music on top of her annoying, shrill voice. I completely understand why this album is on the list, being one of the most influential albums and artists of the 2010s (if not the most), but how Taylor Swift became this influential and loved is beyond me. It's deeply disappointing that nowadays there is a set formula you can follow (chord progressions, melodies, etc) to have your music noticed, and the fact that many artists follow this formula for every single song they make shows that they don't really care about making good music or new music, or authenticity, but they just want to get rich & famous as quickly as they can. It's a relief, of course, to see modern artists that don't follow the same formula for every song, and there are plenty of those, mostly towards the rap side of popular music, but back before my time, every artist would pour their heart and soul into everything they made. Taylor Swift, on the other hand, doesn't even write her own lyrics. It took a team of Hollywood writers to write all the lyrics, another team of musicologists and actual musicians to write the instrumentals and make them using a computer program, and another team of sound engineers to expertly autotune and basically curate Taylor Swift's voice, all to create a generic, boring song whose entire purpose is to get stuck in everyone's heads for a week and then be forgotten. It took one man to write Bohemian Rhapsody (and another 3 to perform it, I'll give her that), in all its complexity and grandeur, and it still survives as a well-known and well-loved song 50 years later. If you can't even make your voice sound good with autotune and a million filters, it's time to switch to playing bass.

I just don't get it.

Eat the rich.

I refuse to listen to this woman. Worst thing to happen to music.

hard no

This is what the one star rating is for

I would give anything to never hear Shake it off again

I've heard some of these songs before, but not by choice. Trying to get through the album only served to reinforce my belief that everything Swift does is manufactured for wide appeal. The songs sound like they're put together by focus groups and industry execs running algorithms to determine how to sell as many copies of the album as possible. There's no soul in it. Someone knows what they're doing though, because this mediocre product does sell millions of units no matter how empty and disposable it is. Which is fine for them and Taylor, but it means nothing to me. If people like it, good for them.

The boiled, unseasoned chicken of the music industry

TOO Pop!

I tried, I really did but couldnt really listen this

I tried, it didn’t stick

I wish I could rate this with 0 stars

sucks ass

Sorry don't agree with her manipulating fans to line her bank balance so refuse to listen

Before I knew what I know about her I loved this album.

I just had 2 five star albums in a row so I was expecting something bad to come next. Unfortunately for me, it happened to be an "album" with everything I hate about my generation's music taste (so worse than I expected). After listening to the album I do think I was slightly over exaggerating but I still didn't enjoy. To me it feels pretty corporate and unimpressed. It also isn't very relatable but that is probably because I'm not the target audience. Still, I had to listen to this on the radio for years so my brain is programmed to hating it. Would be a 1.5 but since it's overplayed to hell and back I'm giving it a 1.

genuine struggle listen

The Queen of Im14andthisisdeep. Like come on the lyrics on bad blood are abysmal. But pretty good for an eighth grader! Rating: 1.4

I guess I am the only one who doesn't get it. The songwriting isn't great, the musical arrangement isn't mindblowing, and these songs are not particularly catchy. I understand that sometime we all feel like a little girl in a big girl's body, but sometime after your early 20's you have to move on. I got 50 year old dudes telling me that Taylor Swift is the new Bruce Springsteen (who I also don't quite get, but that is a different story for a different time). As with any artistic endeavour, music is subjective...I guess I just prefer to turn to Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos, Fiona, or Tegan and Sara when I need my angsty girl pop fix.

I sat on this one for over a month after it was generated, because I suspected I was going to hate the listening experience, but have successfully isolated myself from pop music for so long that I wasn't certain. There's also a certain reluctance to contaminate my music recommendation algorithms, you know? Anyway. Thirty three days later, I finally sucked it up and gave Taylor Swift a listen. Shallow. Hollow. Overproduced. Prepackaged and sanitized for popular consumption. I know I haven't quite made it through 10% of the albums on this project yet, and a few of my all time favorites are still in the future - so I'm going to go clean my ears by listening to one of those. Todd Rundgren, save me!

Only heard two most recent Taylor albums in full but never this one except for the singles. The title of the album is so funny considering how 2014 it sounds (and looks when it comes to the album cover). This particular brand of pop music is not something I like, it just sounds so juvenile. I don't want it to look like I hate the album just because it's Taylor (hell, I thought Midnights was an OK album) but she really just doesn't make music that appeals to me in any way 1/5

Ugh. I guess I have to listen to an entire TSweezy record finally? This is the worst kind of disposable pop music. Produced by committee, enjoyed by masses of drooling children. Engineered to the lowest common denominator. The beats are catchy of course. They’re perfectly calibrated to sound good over the speakers in a Starbucks or in a VW ad or some fucking place. This isn’t music. It’s a commercial project to turn people into millionaires and millionaires into billionaires.

I don't want to listen to or hear this album again.

Ehh not for me

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

See, now, should I be listening to the version of the album this website is directing me to? Or should I listen to Taylor's version? I'm sure there's some sort of moral quandary there that I can't be bothered to research. In any event, I'm going to record my own version of this album, Sean's Version if you will, where I take two ordinary carrier bags, and in one quick yelp, scream the words to all the songs into the first bag, tie it up and throw it into the ocean for a kindred spirit to find one day, or for a guppy to become fatally entangled with. Then I'll defecate into the second bag and ask a Big Machine Records executive to fasten it over my head until I suffocate in pooey carbon dioxide. I'll record all of this bag action and ask my executors to upload the results to all good streaming platforms.

ever since i signed up this algorithm has been giving me rather bad albums but this has got to top it PLEASE NO 😫😫😫 i can imagine people enjoying this i guess but this is SO bland i cant deal with it anymore there’s nothing remotely interesting or different like why should i listen to this when i can just listen to something else that’s more authentic and actually interesting ?? as much as i want to like something about it it’s so boring i just can’t, it’s catchy but not in a way that’s even pleasant or enjoyable for me, maybe it’s just not my type of thing sorry

Not for me

1989 ends with the song Clean. I know another album that ends with a song called Clean, Depeche Mode's Violator (also on this list). Guess when Violator was released? You guessed it, 1989. Coincidence??? I know this was popular, but I don't think I've ever heard an album so devoid of any soul. Somebody tell Swift that basslines can consist of more than 8th note roots. Oy.

Good for her.

What a bland and inoffensive album. I don't hate everyone for liking it, but to me it felt like a bag of unsalted chips (or fries). You go through it, on the moment there's nothing that makes you particularly stop, but by the time you're done with it you feel at best ok and at worst wondering why you spent time on it. Maybe it needs a decade more in the fridge before it becomes charmingly cheesy and retro, but right now I really don't get why people would spend life savings to see her live.

Hilariously nepotistically terrible. The Mary sue of pop songs. Imagine having all these words and nothing to say.

I couldn't even last 1 song. Fucking awful person, even worse as an artist. No musical merit whatsoever. Her unbelievable popularity is one of the most damning indictments of her generation. One of the few times I have wished that this site allowed zero stars!!!!

1 might be slightly harsh, but also unfair to score this as high as others I have rated 2. The failings of an out-of-five rating system...

I got this for day 89. I just wanted to share how cool of a coincidence that is. Unfortunately, this absolutely blows and worse, this is the second Taylor Swift album I've gotten in 89 days. At its best it reminded me of Carly Rae Jepsen but with less personality. This didn't change my perception of Taylor Swift, I already knew she was a competent songwriter with not an ounce of personality to her. Musical chicken tendies, music for people who don't really like music.

Fav: Style Least Fav: Bad Blood Nothing against Taylor Swift or her fans but this just bored me. Style was the only song I genuinely liked

First listen. Well not entirely true, because these songs have been played on the radio about a million times a day. Dogshit.

Bland, monotonous, overproduced, indistinguishable from her competitors. Why all the fuss?

I would never

They say that hate engages. Here I am doing a negative review of this album. Hearing this only brought me bad feelings. I've never seen anything more generic about this in all of pop music. Nothing rings true in these songs. Everything sounds like a sure formula for success. The only thing true about this is the feeling of heartbreak. Easy music for little girls suffering for love. This singer uses the music market at her pleasure. It's not for nothing that she became who she is in this field.

go AWAYYYYYYYYYYYY. if this has shake it off on it im gonna vomit welcome to new york- 1 blank space- 1 style- 2. target ad music out of the woods- 2 all you had to do was stay- 1 or 2 shake it off- -1000 aura. im gonna throw up i wish you would- 2 or 3 bad blood- -1000 wildest dreams- 2 or 3 how you get the girl- please get this away from me. 1 or 2 this love- 2 i know places- me too bitch. i know all sorts of places. 1 or 2 clean- 2 or 3 because i like drugs. otherwise this is a sonically terrible song wonderland- 1 or 2 you are in love- 2 new romantics- 1 id give her and whoever allowed this to happen the electric chair

Yeah, no This is more of a product than art, for me The lyrics are okay, as I like the expressiveness of Taylor, but since almost all songs are about her relationships, it gets stale Not a big fan of the pop sound, it's artificial and is made for charts and radio play Nothing wrong with that, but it's not for me. Wildest Dreams is a good shakeup, like the subtle production. Not something that I'm gonna go back to probably, but it's a standout for sure Favorite track: Blank Space

Oh, no. It’s unbearable

It’s a pop record. I am not the intended audience for this album, nor will I ever be. It’s clearly a good album from a production standpoint. It’s also fun, I guess. That’s about all the nice things I have to say about this album. Its lyrics are unapologetically self obsessed and strike me as being taken straight from the diary of a high school girl, which I guess is half the point? There’s not a single profound idea spoken, but clearly swifties aren’t on the hunt for anything novel. I wasn’t looking forward to the album, but I listened to it with open ears. If I never hear it again, it will be too soon. 1 star. Yawn.

never cared for Taylor Swift, this shit is overhyped at best and annoying at worst

Wrong demographic

Sorry Taylor… I just really really don’t like your music. Best of luck though.

Shit. Taylor Swift music is a joke. She's smart and successful and killing me slowly.

Disturbing. I can't quite point to what I don't like about it and I really tried to be positive and listen without prejudice. But something about the perfect pop sensibility, the crystal clear vocals, and most of all the inoffensiveness really bugged me and I hate every note of it. But so many people love it. It makes me think about some 60's sci-fi horror film where the world has gone slightly mad about the latest demagogue and only our hero can see through them. 'Can't you all see? There's nothing there! There's nothing there!'

Nah. Catchy sure but so is row row row your boat.

I was honestly quite interested to listen to this one. She’s the biggest pop star in the world and I’d never sat down and listened to a full album of hers before. I was really disappointed. It just sounded like such lazy songwriting. The unimpressive synths and computer drumbeats were so boring. Very safe music which didn’t do anything for me

I gave it a fair shake, but this just ain’t for me

Bland boring fluff indistinguishable from any other industry female shoved down our top 40 throats. The tone of her screeching really grates on my ears!!

No. Can’t do it.

Awful pop

Why is this so hyped? It’s just generic modern pop music.

I don’t want to be a Taylor Swift hater, but… It’s just BAD. Lyrically, rhythmically, vocally bad. Sorry, but not sorry.

How will poor Taylor make it from one show to the next, and also make it back in time to see TK play sportsball? And also promote that we need to decrease carbon emissions? Good thing she is one of our overlords and would never be hypocritical and has our best interests in mind, im so thankful for you TS

Her country albums were waaaay better!

I was actually excited to give a Taylor Swift album a proper listen, but dear god did it dissapoint. Not only it is mediocre and repetitive, it is more than one hour long! What for? Its all the same! There are a couple of nice bangers here and there, but they definitely are not anything groundbreaking. This album is equivalent to chewing gum in nutritional value. Boring, average instrumentals to support Taylors voice, which is great, but every song is about the same thing, I stg Taylor needs a therapist ASAP. Anyway, this is nothing interesting for 2014, its like the safest, mass-consumtion-largest-target-audience PRODUCT, not art. Completely unsignificant in terms of larger artistic landscape. And its not bad, but its nothing special. NNN

It's just not good. I'm not the demographic, etc, etc. But this is just a music-style vampire record with worse versions of different genres behind lyrics shallower than a baby pool.

fuck off.

Refused to listen.

I don't fucking think so

Sorry………

Would I listen to it again: no Is it a no-skip album: no Favorite song: - Least favorite song: - Do I like it: no

No thanks.

toxic and awful. Never again

pop de baixíssima qualidade musical. Nada de novo. Completamente descartável. Sem graça de tudo.

I was listening this on Spotify and got a message from my best buddy: "Why the fuck are you listening an entire Taylor Swift album" and now I feel embarrassed. Thanks a lot.

Gear: Focal Clear Mix: gar nicht so scheiße Musik: ganz schön scheiße Wertung: 📸(📸)/5

trash. unoriginal and talentless

Not interested

just not a T swift fan. Respect that she has built the following she has, just not for me.

I am not a Swiftie.

Didn’t listen

Not my jam!

I was surprised at how bland this was. There were no dynamics and it sounded autotuned, whether it was or not doesn't really matter. I thought perhaps it was the system I was listening on, but listening to other music proved that to not be the case. beige

Oh boy.... I don't know if I can do this album. I'll give it a try but not promising anything. Especially after the whole Super Bowl news. Okay, this first track is kinda catchy. Yeah sorry can't do this. 1 star. Gonna put on some real 80s music.

I will not

It's mediocre pop music written by an adult teenager for teenagers and other middle-aged teenagers who never grew up past high school boys and crushes. I will NEVER understand why people think she's such a genius lyricist... Bob Dylan is an incredible lyricist, Taylor is just a product and nothing further. She's doing more planet to the damage than probably all of us on this site combined, but her "stans" don't care. They'll continue harassing Joe Alwyn while defending her dating a racist, bigot.

Not my cup of tea

Asexual garbage

Not a Taylor fan.

Not my cup of tea (fully realizing that this 60+ dude is not exactly the target audience.

Just not for me. Much prefer CRJ or Charli XSX and other pop artists.

Very poppy

I just don’t get the hype. There are far better pop artists out there, but for some reason Taylor is the one that gets the push. Whatever I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I will just continue to keep on keeping on.

Her voice is genuinely unpleasant to me. She gives these shrill belts that make me cringe and sound unskilled. The song structures and production sound incredibly generic. The lyrical content is basic and heavy handed. There’s not much redeeming here. I think she does have some better material than this.

There's nothing objectively "wrong" with it, but I think that's the problem. It's very sterile music. The lyrics are vapid at best. There's no soul to it. Every single note seems like it belongs in a collector's case...to be preserved rather than enjoyed. Like most pop music, it seems like these songs were composed to appeal to the masses and that does absolutely nothing for me. Stand out tracks: Style, Shake It Off

Obviously a lot of people love this but I do not.

ye made that bitch famous

I don’t think I’ll ever be in the mood for listening to this so I may as well get it over with. Bland bland boring yawn The only thing remotely interesting on it is Shake it Off. The whole thing sounds the same all the way through 1/5

I hated Taylor Swift because of so many stories telling she’s the worse person, so I was not listening to what she’s doing. And fuck, I did well, that’s all I hate in music, bad lyrics, high pitched voice and some bad electronics in the background. Pop is probably the genre that I enjoy the less but I can enjoy some Madonna or Britney. Taylor Swift is just impossible. Although I can understand that some people enjoy it

Not good

As Kanye West famously said "I made that bitch famous", just super basic pop music that is really shit.

This album/ artist does not deserve to be in this list. The songs are pure hot garbage. All the tracks sound like instrumentals made using a free trial of fruity loops and the lyrics delivered are cliche love references and completely meaningless. I pushed through the entire album but it wasn't enjoyable in the slightest.

this is not better than to pimp a butterfly. not even close. now thats a reference only the true music enthusiasts will get.

"Shake it Off" is great to play when your wet dog comes in from the rain. But the album on the whole is about as timeless and perseverant as 1989's horoscope. 🌌

Not a fan of Taylor Swift but did listen to this, good pop music but not my music I would go to. Shake it off was ok I suppose and the only thing I recognise.

There is nothing significant about this at all; it’s a cleverly manufactured money grab which somehow appeals to seemingly everyone on Planet Earth. Absolutely no variation in song length, lyrical theme, or musical technique which might make it interesting. The heavily autotuned singing and perfect production rips this album of all soul and human-ness, creating a product rather than a piece of art. The incredibly simple lyrics result in zero thought required to interpret what the song may be about and offers no chance at a thoughtful discussion. This is undeniably a boring experience. Thoughts and prayers go out to all those albums which are filled with talent and musicality and didn’t make the list because the writer of this book probably felt obliged to include a Taylor Swift album to lower the risk of getting attacked by Swifties.

I COULD NOT, WOULD NOT, ON A BOAT. I WILL NOT, WILL NOT, WITH A GOAT. I WILL NOT HEAR IT IN THE RAIN. NOT IN THE DARK! NOT IN A TREE! NOT IN A CAR! YOU LET ME BE! I DO NOT LIKE IT IN A BOX. I DO NOT LIKE IT WITH A FOX. I WILL NOT HEAR IT IN A HOUSE. I DO NOT LIKE IT WITH A MOUSE. I DO NOT LIKE IT HERE OR THERE. I DO NOT LIKE IT ANYWHERE! I DO NOT LIKE TSWIFTS OEUVRE!

TS sucks.

It is shit, but also strangely uplifting in a way that makes you feel like you're being constantly lied to. I hate it.

Schrott.

This album is just really unoffensive music that doesnt really take risks at all, a call back to 80s music but without really the flavour. Imo its just a really boring album that is massly over produced for the charts. I cant really stand this album. Heck it aint even the good type of synth heavy 80s music, this just feels misplaced imo idk how it made it

Taylor Swift seems to be a pretty decent human, but this album...it's a no. Poetry that sounds like it was written by a lovelorn twelve year old... Lyrically simplistic, boring, trite; plus nothing of interest musically. Reliant on a really samey drum beat for every song, rather than melodies. Really generic. The kind of lyrics I can imagine a grumpy tweenager quoting on her MSN messenger id in the late nineties. Making an effort to sound profound. I get it, you wear red lipstick. Just not for me. Ugh I sound old!

I'm sorry, women. I thought I might end up appreciating her music a bit more, but this just solidified that I do not like Taylor Swift. I found this to be pretty boring and grating on the ears. I don't even have much to say about it. It just made me groan. I guess my favourite song was Black Space, but none of them were good, in my opinion.

Really not my style
