Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Honestly I’m having trouble enjoying this. I’m not a fan of Young’s voice. I think his storytelling is unmatched but this is first and foremost music, which the timbre of voice strongly influences. I enjoy welfare mothers, and the tracks that bookend the album. Is seems this album requires a particular state of mind
Overall I just think this is pretty boring. Neil Young is rock royalty and I respect him but I really never find myself with any urge to listen to him or collect his albums.
Not really my vibe" Welfare Mothers or Hey Hey. My My (into the black) are my favorites. Definitely gets more enjoyable as the album comes to a close
Didn't think I would like this but it's actually very good.
My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)
Sometimes the story behind the album really elevates it: new songs recorded live with the back half of the set featuring electric guitars. Another fantastic rock album!
My, My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), Powderfinger e Welfare Mothers
Not his best album.
Britpop goes Rock.
As outras sao boas.
A mediocre 3/5
Was ok, got a bit fed up of Neil Youngs voice after a while
the neil young album to own
Chill to listen to.
I mean... its relaxing, not sure how much I care about riding a Llama. no drums out of 5
Nice
On the good side of ok, though a bit whiny
Fine.
Love a bit of Neil Young. Not sure why theres a load of live albums on this list, but I dig it. Everything broke at work so no time to review properly
It's good. But is it great? I'm not sure.
Reaper
Nice album. His special voice makes it a nice album. And of course because it is easy listening music.
3.4
Not my favorite Neil Young album but not bad. My my hey hey is the highlight for me
Not my fav Neil Young but still very good.
Started off slowly but ramped up quite unexpectedly towards the end. A pretty solid rock album.
Not really a huge fan of Neil Young, though I can appreciate the music and its influence. Not bad - some nice songs, but I probably won't be revisiting any time soon. (2.6)
A calm and relaxed album with a good instruments and a nice flow
ganska bra fakitkst
Helppoa rokkia
Is Ok Not exactly my style so far Fine, not for me
Got some Bob Dylan vibes, not a ton of variety, but a nice album.
Always thought Neil Young was like super annoying 80s stuff, but this was pretty cool folk stuff. Not bad.
Will give this more listens! I like the acoustic/rock split
Hyvä levy kokonaisuusja kasvoi kivasti koko ajan. Ei turhaan kehuttu
Pretty good. Acoustic side best side. First two and final track were favourites.
3.5! Some boring songs but Powderfinger and Hey Hey, My My are great.
didn't realize appreciate this music so idk how to rate it
I see my feelings about Neil Young are shared with not a few others. When I saw this was in 1001 My first thought was “uh oh” but decided I should try on general principles. But by the end, along with my wife volunteering “I’ve never cared for his whiney voice” - exactly my thoughts by that point, my mind was made up. Plus variations on ‘My my, hey hey’ keep coming up on playlists, a song whose insipid lyrics strike my as all too Neal Young. 2 because of his influence.
Mercifully short. Fuck off Neil Young and your twenty thousand albums on this list. Crazy Horse albums are at least more manageable than the solo shit.
I'm already not a fan of partially live albums, and the fact I have to deal with this duo again really dampens the mood. Again, Neil Young was an activst who was instrumental on bringing awareness to many important social issues. Unfortunately, I just can't get into his music, admittedly, he never really has a terrible album(it's just rarely a good album as well). Favorite Track: "Ride My Llama".
Ooh I'm Neil young I have a whiny voice and my lyrics are vaguely poetic everyone loves me shut up man
Aburrido
It's a bit meh, can't lie. Couple decent tracks but I feel like there is better Neil Young to be heard. Top tracks: my my hey hey, ride my llama
It insists upon itself
Not really my thing. Anything with a harmonica is probably a no.
You're not gonna make me like him. He sounds like poor personal hygiene, desperate that his campfire strumming is going to impress.
Once again, I do not get the Young craze. Crazy Horse adds a certain sauce here, but Neil always finds a way to ruin it with his sad, sad, sad fucking voice. Little to say. Two stars, and at least one of them is because Kurt Cobain really likes that lyric. Fave tracks: - My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue - Sail Away - Powderfinger
Not much to say; I like how thr first/last tracks mirror each other. I don't hate but I don't love love his voice. Probably not his best album but not bad either. 2 to 3 stars
A mostly live album with overdubs, you've gorra laff. I couldn't get into this at all, a solid reminder that I don't like Neil Young.
Well at least with each Neil Young album on the list I get one closer to not having to listen to Neil Young anymore. Similar to the Dire Straits album this is very technically proficient its just also... rather boring to me. I liked Thrasher, mostly because I pretty quickly identified it as a callout song against Crosby, Stills and Nash. Its unquestionably all very poetic, and the writing is strong here, I think I just find this era of Folk very sleepy. I guess I was also pleasantly suprised that a song called "Pocahontas" was politically a lot better then I expected It would be. File this in the "not for me" portion.
Neil Young being Neil Young… I sigh whenever I read Neil Young's name on one of the albums on this list, because I think he is severely overrated. The problem is always the same. The song might start out well enough, but as soon as I hear Neil Young's whining singing voice, I just can't stand to listen any further. 2⭐️
no me gusta
Fine.
Another Neil Young album; didn’t connect with me this time. (Continue to wonder about the random generator, why it seems to repeat artists?)
More Neil Young. What is the deal with giving him so much spotlight on this list. More of the same as the other albums that we've been subjected to. Nothing special.
Hey, it's more Neil Young! This means more wavery-voiced delivery of cryptic, half-rhymed lyrics that are inexplicable ("Ride My Llama") where they're not offensive ("Pocahontas"). The music is universally slow and simple, and the songs are frankly hard to tell apart from one another, though there are a few nice guitar parts and some good vocal harmonies. If you haven't guessed, I'm not particularly a fan of Neil Young, and this album does nothing to change that.
Hard to imagine an album featuring such nuggets of wisdom as welfare women make better lovers isn't at least 4 stars but if not for Hey Hey My My this would have been a 1 star album for me.
an album for young country boys who also like to rock. favourite song was sail away.
Officially adding Neil Young to - artists whose song I sometimes like better sung as a cover.
omg dawg not again
I was not in the mood for this. Bit boring.
Yeah, Neil Young. Have to see how I feel today… I feel like my mom used Bob Dylan and Neil Young to torture me as a teenager. I mean I don’t feel that way, she DID use them to torture me. Now the thing is, I deserved to be tortured. I was a very angry punk rock teen. But the experience lingers. I have since forced myself, through sheer will, to appreciate the artistry of said artists. But the feeling still lingers. The feeling of wanting to crush Neil Young like a squirming bug beneath my shoe. It’s not just his voice. Or the style. I’m a HUGE fan of Jason Molina. But… f* you Neil. Really. 2 stars cause you undeniably are an artist. 2 stars cause you torture me still. Boolean rating: honesty? No. I could die without hearing Neil Young. I’d just lack that well roundnesses, but I would be happier for it! After all, it’s better to burn out than to fade away. Sorry, I wrote this before I remembered it had been in Kurt Cobain’s suicide note. But then I thought, no, I would leave it. It’s all part of the conversation. That’s part of what I’m here for.
i suppose i can appreciate some of this from a lyrical standpoint, but not my speed
Not for me
Oooh aaah, I see there's a distict lack of percussion on half the album. That will unfortunately be 1 point taken off of the final score. Better luck next time, Mister Young and Misters Horse.
There's not much to say about this album. I found it quite boring to listen to. I don't think this kind of music is for me.
Tranquilo
it’s fine, it didn’t do much for me and idk why. it was nice in the background! prob 2.5
I wasn't hallucinating that they were singing about welfare mothers.
Boring apart from the occasional slightly interesting part
no thanks- 3.5/10
Kuitenkin, taitavaa, oikeaa musaa. 2/5
Nice and pleasant, but not for me sadly. Surprised to read about this being the proto for grunge! It's so interesting how connections are everywhere.
yet another live album bro. i also can't stand country. the rock portion was better but that harmonica was ear piercing Would I listen again: no Deserves to be on this list: no 2.3
The shrill beast rears its ugly head again. A good ballad or two to start the record gives way to the inevitability that Neil Young’s voice can’t be endured for a full album. 2/5 “Welfare Mothers” was a new low
Buena voz, album corto. Rock chill
Not as bad as Tonight's The Night, but not good either. Neil Young doesn't have a good voice. He sounds annoying and thinks his vocal range goes higher than it does. There aren't even interesting instrumentals to back him up. Not as bad as some other music on the list, but this is bad.
Not bad, but not really my thing. A bit distracting
Didn't like Neil's half, did like Crazy Horse.
2.5 estrellas.
Meh
Meh
I like Neil Young, but didn't like this album so much
Nice
Nothing too Crazy
If you like Neil Young then this hits all the right buttons.
this made me feel like i was there when he was chain smoking the joints that inspired these songs and probably also smoked them with him because it felt like a trip. the hey hey my my hey hey gimmick is the best part of this for me. without those songs bookending the record i would kinda hate this?
Listening session: march 26th, while commuting to internship Listened to before: no Thoughts: a bit too boring and American for me Favourite tracks: Thrasher & Sail Away
I love some NY songs. Did not love this album.
I see the appeal of Neil Young, but it's just not my jam
Well good to know that I am not a Neil Young fan. The first half was unbearable, I hate slow acoustic songs especially with Neil's voice that I do not like. The second half was better, but not enough to save it. Won't be listening again. Favorite Track- Sedan Delivery Least Favorite Track - Thrashers ⭐️⭐️
Oh Neil, you're writing is great but that is completely offset by your voice... Sorry, not sorry...
Tedious Americana
Boring instrumentals, boring lyrics.
Pretty boring overall. Everything sounded the same. Album was quick to get through and I didn’t find any of the songs reigned above the others.
Neil Young's music sounds so similar, and this one is exactly what you would expect. Mediocre and forgettable outside of the first song, I have no love for this one. Really not for me
Just okay, if not entirely forgettable, instrumental music made completely insufferable by audio throughout of a large rat biting the testicles of a donkey. Implying that the sometimes grungy guitar sounds of this album influenced later grunge music gives the donkey credit that he never deserved.
Garchita, pero garchita en serio. Ni una canción buena.
1/3. Boring live album, slipped right by me. I like Neil’s voice for about 5 minutes and then I get tired of it. Not sure if I’m missing something visual here, but I’m not sure how this pushed any boundaries for live albums.
Not a fan of Neil Young
4,8/10 Sympa
Great opener. Then boring folk before mediocre rock ends the album. Too much Young in the 1001.
not as good as harvest. native vibes were cool
"Hey Hey, My My" would sounds amazing with a more rocking singer. Neil Young's singing is the worst thing about Neil Young songs. The music is good, the band is solid, the songwriting is decent, but the vocals just don't fit. I'm also annoyed that he slags off the other members of CSNY, calling them dead weight. Fuck you, man! You might have been the most popular member of the band (for reasons that will always evade me), but you were not the best member (and easily the worst singer). I was between a 2 and 3 for this album, but denigrating his former band members, who I will always prefer, knocks him down a peg. It also balances the time I rounded "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" up to a 3.
first half is very boring, it gets better in the second half but not enough to save this for me fav song: Welfare Mothers
He's a legend but this album didn't quite hit for me. Some good tunes but not a cohesive collection. Some great guitar work and Hey Hey My My is a banger.
Neil young sounds old and crazy horse isn’t that crazy. His voice gets on my nerves. He sings like the old guy from ready player one which also annoyed me. Other than that it’s kind of just a dude with a guitar album. 4/10
Falls somewhere between reflective & depressing. Perhaps "stage not studio" isnt the environment for Neil's voice to shine brightest. I also largely find it hard to resonate with the harmonica. Example = refer to 34 on my list where I was genuinely surprised by a studio album of Mr Youngs The last track on the album - a heavier version of Hey Hey rocked unexpectly hard. To be honest, both versions of "Hey Hey" would be the only things I really remember though. 2.5 stars
Kinda below sub par. Have no true opinion any of these songs. Rust may never sleep, but it sure put my mind to sleep.
2/5. Wasn't particularly blown away by this album, but also wasn't entirely offensive. Not really much to say, just fine. Favourite Track - Powderfinger
Sleepy time music
Still in the process of evaluating why I didn’t like this as much as Neil Young’s so stuff. It didn’t have the same charm.
ik hou niet van mondharmonica.
mid
I need Neil Young in smaller doses
Album #797 for me and i hope to god ive reached the end of Neil on this list. Musically good but his whiny ass voice is insufferable
Not much to say. The first half of the album is acoustic, the second half is electric, but it's all boring, mid-tempo rock with nary a moment of excitement.
it's fine but im not a fan of folk or his voice
Ne so gar nich
7 Neil Young albums! 7! The first song is fine, but then, as soon as the second song starts, you are reminded that everything this man produces is exactly the same. After that it gets tedious.
Pretty rubbish to be honest. Didn't see the appeal of any of these songs but there was some nice guitars. Could possibly improve with a second listen but that won't happen any time soon.
Not my favorite album tbh. I see the vision but my eyes simply are not built for it.
Boring
Did not give my full attention, but zoned in and out of washed-up rock. Sounded quite slurry man in a pub trying to convince himself and others to 'rock on'. A damning review I know but only because I've heard is other (much greater) stuff.
I can handle Neil Young for a couple songs, but after a while it gets old. This album is not too bad.
This one wasn’t for me again
Neil Young’s voice sounds like how a harmonica would talk if it could
beautiful, but boring as fuck.
Nicht so besonders
It was fine, never really vibed with Neil Young
Fine, didn't really connect. I plan to do a Neil Young deep dive one day and maybe this will stick
It could be a 3 ig
This guy really does seem like a whiny little douche
This was very dull. My second Neil Young album on this list and both have been poor. Musically it’s absolutely fine, just not captivating in the slightest.
It was okay. Not really my cup of tea.
Just synchronized noise, would expect to hear this is a 60 yr old history teacher's office
Not a fan of the lyrics or vocals. The instrumental was NICE though
Quite a nice listen actually. This gives me nostalgia about family gatherings and a lovely man I briefly dated, probably wont rush back to listen though.
Not my cup of tea again. Too country
If your in a good mood, and you just need to get depressed, never fear, Neil Young is here. Melancholy drivel. Cheer up dude, you get to make music for living. 2.0
I really liked thrasher, but the rest were not really my style
It gives of country vibe with a bit of rock. I like the instruments but not the lyrics as much.
This album sent me into a 2am rant after hearing the first 5 songs and declaring that it is completely unimpressive and certainly not unique, boring bullshit that should not be a must listen. I had flashbacks of Nebraska with Bruce Springsteen essentially sitting around a fire with an acoustic guitar telling stories in a singing voice I am not fond of. Thankfully things picked up after the first five songs and everything starting with Powderfinger was actually pretty decent with some pretty good guitar. I don’t take back what I said about the first five songs though. At least he sings better than Springsteen.
Eh. There are so many incredible live Neil sets out there these days I don’t see needing to revisit this. Kind of meanders professionally until sedan delivery which is strange and fun and rips pretty hard before concluding with a crunchy, unenjoyable rendition of my my hey hey. 2.5*
Fine, but not really to my taste.
This album was an unexpected fusion of rock and country, not sure how I feel about it still. Favourite track: My My, Hey Hey (out of the blue)
I once again do not necessarily understand the Neil Young experience. I like Crosby, Stills and Nash more
I tried to research and figure out what I'm missing, but I just don't find much appealing about Neil Young and his whiney ass folk music.
Very clean production for a live album but thats about the limit of the praise for this. The songs are overlong the singing is a hard listen. All in all an album that belongs in the archive
Another one? 🥱 voice still whiny
Feels like a time capsule of the political climate of the 1970s in America. Came out in 1979, four years after the end of the Vietnam War. Neil Young was about 34 years old, and the war had spanned most of his formative years. The goal is to send a message. Favorite Moments: Guitar solo in Powderfinger, Hey Hey, My My (into the black) Not my favorite From the internet: "Rust Never Sleeps" reflects Young's determination to avoid creative stagnation and adapt, as immortalized in the lyric "It's better to burn out than fade away".
it's just OK. 12/28/2025
Not for me. I liked Powderfinger and Thrasher, but other than that the songs mostly droned on and I'm just not a fan of Neil Young's voice
Not for me.
2/5
I was bored by this. And maybe rock and roll should never die, but I felt a little dead inside listening to this. Sorry not sorry.
Good album but not my vibe.
eh didnt finish it
There are better Neil Young albums in the world, and you shouldn’t be required to listen to this one. It’s a split live/studio album but a bunch of the live stuff was overdubbed in the studio so, who really knows what’s what anymore. To add an extra gimmick, side one is acoustic and side two is electric (yes, like Dylan did in 1966). Neil Young can’t really sing on either side, but that's never stopped him before. The only real standouts for me are “My, My, Hey, Hey (Out Of The Blue)” and “Welfare Mothers”.
one song gave me vibes that it should be the backing song for a camcorder video of sweet moments but i just dont think it's an album for me
why is he out of tune all the time…
Ugh
I hate to be a dick... but its just so God Damned boring Best Song: Ride My Llama Rating: 4.0/10 Stars: 2
Mother always said if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything and I don’t have anything to say. That’s not true. I have a bunch of nice things to say. Starting the set with an acoustic version of My My Hey Hey and then ending it with a super heavy grungy version and calling it Hey Hey My My is top shelf chefs kiss tasty. That version of hey hey my my is where the roots of grunge music can be traced all the way back to and then ironically strung all the way forward with the lyric “It’s better to burn out and fade away”, included in the suicide note of the man responsible for the grungw explosion in the early 1990s, Kurt Cobain. Another nice thing I have to say is that the melody and timbre of Neil Young‘s voice in Pocahontas is in its own echelon of sweetness, and if bee’s ever had to collect songs to feed and nourish their queen instead of pollen Pocahontas would her sonic main course. Ok three. Thrasher is better thsn I realized on second listen. Fuck, so is Sail Away, now the mother always said addage I started with doesn’t match the thing. Well that’s unfortunate. Don’t listen to me. Listen to Neil Young. Stand Out- A tie between the closing track Hey Hey My My, particularly the dirty, grungy tone, of the electric guitar and thrashing guitar solo that are pretty much the ground zero of what what eventually become mainstream 90s grunge rock and Pocahontas and it’s royal aviary delectibility.
not my vibe
I just found it boring. A shame.
Just okay, if not entirely forgettable, instrumental music made completely insufferable by audio throughout of a large rat biting the testicles of a donkey. Implying that the sometimes grungy guitar sounds of this album influenced later grunge music gives the donkey credit that he never deserved.
Okay album. This was my least favorite NY & CH album on the list
Neil Young is great and all, but I don't really get it.
Honestly, the musicality is nice, the vocals are honest and emotional, but the energy is just a drag for me. Listened to it in pieces and could not have told you when it started to repeat. Really have a hard time telling you one song on this album.
Cowgirl in the Sand
Done. Not my cup of tea tea.
WHO GAVE THIS MAN A HARMONICA
Czasami miewa ciekawe aranżacje, a potem otwiera gębę i czar pryska. Nie łapię tego, ani trochę. Zresztą nie znam nikogo, kto by kiedykolwiek powiedział "Jestem fanem Neila Younga" albo kto by go puścił przy ludziach.
One really great song. Not overly Neil Young singing like a muppet. Decent.
An empty sandwich. The two slices of bread being the excellent 'My My Hey Hey' and 'Hey Hey My My'. But the rest is very forgetable. Songs about going to the dentist and a particularly dodgy song about hitting on single mums on benefits aren't that great. Especially as, even then, he sounded like a whiney 80 year old. 3 (-1 Harmonica tax)
Not bad but wasn’t crazy about it
"I want to sleep with Pocahontas" she was like 16, Neil
Don’t mind the opener but the rest is bland. Just not a Neil Young kinda guy!
Musically it’s a bit generic biddle but I like his voice and it’s very Karl Dilkington ‘song with a story’ lyric
There's a tic I have when I'm listening to music, it only comes out right before a song gets so bad I have to skip it, I get this feeling, then ask aloud "what the fuck is this?" then skip to the next song. I bring this up because "Ride my llama" ... what the fuck is this?
Docking a point for the offensive Welfare mothers song and all the native American woo woo themes.
Shoutout to the college magician and the guy who hated him. 2/5
boring obnoxious snobbery. i forgot about this album while still listening to it. 1.5/5
Man I hate his voice
A second Neil Young album in a week? You're killing me, Smalls. Or his voice is. Or the boredom. Please stop. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.
Here's what I'll say about this album. He sounds very good as a live performer. It's just that I don't like his music.
Niel Young isn't fun or interesting.
Not stellar
The songs themselves are fine—moody campfire ballads and scruffy garage-rock. But Neil’s delivery just doesn’t land for me... I'm an anti-Youngite. I found myself wishing for cover versions instead, because the melodies and lyrics are undeniably good, yet his voice and ragged style make the experience feel more like endurance than enjoyment.
Oh dear, not another neil young album havent we suffered enough
247/1089 - A little less annoying than the Gold Rush one.
2.2
Boring
Was going to be a 1, but the last few songs saved it. I'm sick of acoustic guitar!
So very much not my thing.
Welfare mom's?
Great start and finish...the middle not so much. Also Pocahontas was terrible.
Seems Neil was passed his peak here
I slept through it :) 2 star
20.58, hima, sennheiser, qobuz aika turhaa ränkytystä ja monkumista. lämpenin kyllä loppua kohden, vika biisi säröllä oli rokkenroll
not the neil i would reach for
Enjoyed the mix up of styles but not a big fan
A bit slow for my liking, but he is a Canadian classic.
Well chill, maar niet het beste werk van de man denk ik.
Better than Ragged Glory, but Neil Young still baffles. He is not a good singer, though sometimes almost characterful. He can be nearly poetic – “the aimless blade of science” – before collapsing into bathos – “slashed the pearly gates” – or plain cliché - "There's more to the picture that meets the eye." Thrasher is almost Everybody’s Talkin’. The album and songs sound thrown together, the lyrics hardly crafted, but Young has clearly been thinking long and hard about some of the themes. Still, “better to burn out than to fade away” is hardly an insight, and Young does not seem convinced himself: the acoustic version fades away, the electric one burns out. Which is it? The first sounds like a demo awaiting a decent band, the second like a rehearsal waiting for the band to get out of its own way. Neither is the finished article. Why bother? 2 This is survivable. With Neil’s lyrics - which are always turgid and childlike in some degree, never elegant, never truly poetic - everything he does runs somewhere around a fine line between passable and boring. He gets away with it here through the novelty of presenting an album in two halves - a soft, sweet acoustic half and a fuzzy rock band half. If all was done in one style then the album would be intolerable. Christ that drumming is bad though. And the singing not great, the guitar playing pretty bad and the sweet West Coast backing vocals always misplaced. Who thought the handclaps on Welfare Mothers was a good idea? Or anything on Welfare Mothers? Shite. 2/5
Far too chill for a rock album as far as I'm concerned.
Or you could just make a punk album, that would be a sick genre switch
You can never go wrong with a classic. But was I in the mood?
99/1001. The story of Johnny Rotten: well i just ended up hating P.I.L's Metal Box in the last review. But I don't know about Neil Young, some people claim he's the profet and without him there wouldn't be any grunge and whatnot. For me this is not music to mildly hurt some for. So the same amount of stars as mr. Rotten.
I don't think I clicked with this one as much. While the songwriting and instrumentals are fine throughout, nothing on here really wowed me outside of "Powderfinger". I'll at least give the album that it gets much better when it gets more electric on the b-side, but other than that, this one didn't land.
Takie figo fago
There's a drum kit on the cover, and the first time you actually notice the drums is over half way in. False advertising.
not really my taste, but i know my dad really likes neil young.
Not for me
This album starts out really strong with My, My, Hey, Hey (Out of the Blue), then confused me with a weird blend of Rock, Country and Folk and in the end ruins all the rapport that it built with My, My, Hey, Hey (Into the Black). At least gotta respect the album's flexibility. 2.5/5
Nota: 2.5
i liked it more than i thought i would. slightly goated?
Eh? Like it wasn’t terrible but I didn’t jive with a lot of it
Sleepy, too mellow for me. Listened while cooking
Believe it or not, I thought this album was pretty bland. There’s nothing really here that makes me think this should be a good album.
Previously rated: Harvest (2/5) After the Gold Rush (3/5) Tonight's the Night (3/5) Ragged Glory (3/5) On The Beach (3/5) Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere (4/5) ********************************************* I just had Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere three albums ago. I didn't really want another Neil Young so soon, but random is random. At some point between that album and this one, Neil developed that awful whiny, nasally singing voice that I can't stand. That ruins anything good that might be here, like the last track Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) which almost sounds metal. I think this is one they could have definitely left off the list. That's seven albums from this guy (not counting any CSNY). We are done with him now, right?
Just not my type of music.
I'm sorry Neil Young, what sort of lyric is: "Welfare mothers make better lovers While they're washin' you can hear this sound now Welfare mothers make better lovers Di-vor-ceeeeeeeee" ??? And while we're on the topic of lyrics: "I'm gonna ride my llama From Peru to Texarkana I wanna ride him good" ??? This is my second Neil Young album since starting the project, and I found this album less dull than the last one (I think I've moved on to "questionable" now), but I still hate his voice. 2/5
a bit repetitive but a good sound highlights: Sail Away, Powderfinger
very repetitive but short so it’s okay i liked the first song most
It’s just all a bit samey
Rust never i sleeps but i do motherfucker!
Neil Young's whiney voice is an acquired taste that I have yet to acquire despite the multiple exposures delivered by this list. File next to Dylan under 'Annoying delivery of interesting lyrics made more annoying by the addition of harmonica'
I got thrown by the opening track, it's a live recording, and it had a fade-out, felt a bit jarring. The rest of the album was okay, but yeah usual Neil Young, harmonica and whine. 2.5
Meh at best. First track was good, rest mid.
Didn’t listened
4/10 - nothing really to write home about. A very forgettable and somewhat generic set of songs. However I do appreciate that they are played very well live
Neil Young has an unreal ability to consistently be the worst part of any album he appears on.
It was okay
Not for me
I didn't overly love it but the guitars were awesome
country ass
Average. Not a fan of the live album.
I'm a fan of Neil Young but not a fan of him trying to be a "must see live" performer
Biz unfairi zwei rostigi Pferd
Kinda just boring.
1. hey - 2.5 2. trazher - 1.5 3. llama - 1.5 4. pocahontaz - 1.5 5. zail - 2.5 6. finger - 1.5 7. uuelfare - 0 8. zedan - 1 9. my - 2.5
A few decent songs (Thrasher, Pocahontas, Powderfinger) and utterly forgettable ones (Ride My Llama, Welfare Mothers, Sedan Delivery) sandwiched between an absolute banger cooked two ways. It's fine.
Haven’t listened to hey hey my my in years and had completely forgotten it’s existence so that was a nice surprise. The rest was kinda forgettable.
Didn’t enjoy this one, his live album Weld is better (and all electric). Late 70s Neil seems really erratic, wonder if fewer drugs and an editor could have helped him not release so many poorly constructed songs.
Why must y’all torment me with so much Neil Young? --This was better than some other albums but all Neil Young has a low ceiling for me.
Pretty boring. Almost like a folksy version of nico & the velvet underground. I appreciate Neil Young's songwriting but pretty boring all together.
The beginning of the album was okay but by the last couple songs I was feeling a little over it… not bad but I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to the full album again!
Nope. I don't like live albums for the most part. This is one of them. It's not that the music is bad and sometimes concerts are fun to listen to, but 90% of the time for me, it's annoying. 2/5 because it's not terrible.
i do not like this man i do not want more neil young records
Beginning to think I’m not much of a fan of Neil Young
I was excited when I heard the first song. I’ve always loved it. Then I didn’t recognize or like any of the other ones (except for the last one). Lol
Is was kind of boring for me. Not my favorite. I could see liking it more if I grew up listening to this or had more ties to it.
Kinda lame Favorites: My My, Hey Hey(Out of the Blue), Powderfinger
I like the guy's voice a lot it has a nice nasally and kinda weak sound, like a thread pulled tight. Big fan. Otherwise a generic and boring album, not my thing. 2/5 stars.
Not a bad album. Not really in my wheel house.
Love his songs but this would not be the album I buy. He is great alone or with CSN&Y!
I knew this was the case but I really start to notice how much outside opinions influence my perception of an album and how by listening to random albums you don’t really do the artists justice. Upon first hearing (and this was my first time listening to Neil Young) I didn’t really enjoy the album. I quite liked the instrumentation on the beginning track and liked its connection to the closer. The fact that it’s a mix of live performances and studio recording is really cool as well. I quite like the intonation of Neil Youngs voice and find some of the distorted guitar, especially in contrast to the first half of the album, intriguing. But I did not really enjoy the music while listening to it or reading the lyrics. I understand the appeal and the ideas behind some of the lyrics but it doesn’t resonate with me. After reading some comments and how the album is structured I immediately started to look at this album as a piece of art more than I did before and upon relistening some of the songs did value them more. But I think it is correct to rate this based on my first listen and I didn’t really enjoy it. Some of the songs like Powderfinger dragged on for me because I didn’t like them. I am sure this would change with time and I’ve read that this album is NOT the best introduction to Neil Young. But as it is, I didn’t really like it but will be coming back for the intro track.
Rust may never sleep, but I'm afraid if I fell asleep, I wouldn't be able to tell if a new song is on. Boring.
Was hard to get through, wasn’t quite country but felt country adjacent and I just wasn’t a fan. Heard people call this an acquired taste, could be the case.
What a powerhouse combo. A mentally ill horse and Crazy Horse?? I kid poor Neil, but I’ve never been able to get behind his odd vocal delivery. That sounds like blasphemy considering my nationality AND my enjoyment of folk music, but I just haven’t been able to get behind the crooner of the free world. To be fair, my exposure to him has been minimal (hence my reference to his big hit) but nothing so far. Please make this good. I’m losing my once ample street credit by the barrel. My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) - Oh alright. I know this one. I hate any lyric that uses the phrase “rock n’ roll” but I’ll be damned if this isn’t a beautiful song and performance of said song. Could do without the moronic whooping from the crowd but a hell of a start. Even with a harmonica solo. What is happening to me? Thrasher - This one is entitled “murder in the pit.” Oh it’s about threshers. The song itself is pretty dull, but imagining the beautiful scene lyrically painted by Neil Young, interspersed with he emergence of denim clad long hairs, makes this a fun one in a sense. Ride my Llama - I will not AND I don’t think Neil rode from Peru to TexArkana. Not even possible. This song is incredibly mid and whilst I abhor such a lack of detail, I’m also losing my cognitive abilities by the hour. Pocahontas - YIKES. “I would give a thousand pelts to sleep with Pocahontas, to find out how she felt.” Indigenous cosplay and fetishization all in one. At least the wordplay on that line is there, but otherwise, this set reparations back a millennium. Sail Away - Would you? That would be great. No more teepee content, Neil, please. You grew up in Winnipeg, be more aware. Oh never mind. It was the 70’s!!! I feel like I’m writing that every day. This is the big pop hit, but can’t hold a candle to Christopher Cross’ “Sailing.” I’d like to hold a candle to both this song and the Cross one. I’m sure the sugary boredom would ensure an easily touchable husk. Powderfinger - Look out Mama, there’s a white boy singing some boring rock. Oh did he say boat? Whatever. Welfare Mothers - Oooooohh mama, rockin’ on down to the crazy rock n’ roll party *clap clap*. Raucous butt rock of the most stale and boomerly persuasion. Sedan Delivery - Back that freighter up to port, we need to unload these 2002 Toyota Echos into their natural habitat; Rural Nova Scotia. This is damn near a punk song that makes me think of shitty sedans, so this is a ten star classic. How he pulled this out after like 8 tracks of the most inoffensive, boring dad rock I’ve ever heard is a Christmas miracle. Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) - The outro? The same pretty song ans the first, except with a loud riff. Juxtaposition is whatever. I don’t know if you read any of that, but Neil still doesn’t appeal to me. There’s a distinct lack of likability to his voice, and while the poetry has its moments, I leave nonplussed by the Canadian’s output here. There’s the first track, which is great, and then I had to wait until the penultimate song to enjoy myself again. This album is thoroughly forgettable and will leave me here, wondering what it is I did to deserve bad albums playing in my ears 4-5 days a week. Oh yeah. I signed up for it. Maybe I’m the crazy one. You can lead a crazy horse to his anti-psychotics, but you can’t make him adhere to his prescribed medication regimen. 2 HIGHLIGHTS: My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), Sedan Delivery
IT was OK. You have to REALLY like Neil Young to sit through an entire album of his stuff.
My rating may make it seem like I didn't like this album, but I actually rather enjoyed it. There's just something that strikes me as "off" about this one, unfortunately, and I'm not sure that I can say exactly what. Favorite track: "My My, Hey Hey"
forgettable folk rock
eh
I know half these songs but they just never did it for me and they still don't. It's either musically too light for the lyrics or aggressively distorted with little to show for it. Welfare Mothers is always fun but other than that there's nothing that I haven't heard before. I'm sure it was groundbreaking in 1979 but even then it just sounds like Springsteen lite, without a saxophone, keyboards, or coherent vision.
Killer opener, but I could take or leave the rest.
Ever wondered what grizzled old hippy Neil Young was getting up to at the height of punk in 1978? Turns out he was recording this mostly live album with a mix of acoustic and electric tracks, reuniting with Crazy Horse for a series of gigs. Musically it’s pretty much by the numbers folk-rock with no real surprises. However, the lyrics read like something that someone who’d taken bad acid in 1970 might write. He starts by name checking Johnny Rotten, then on the next track he asks what happened to his old friends (presumably referring to Crosby, Stills and Nash) then remembers that he got bored of them and abandoned them because they were just dead weight to him. Ouch. There are then couple of tracks that give the impression that he got stoned and fell asleep watching westerns on TV and somehow started dreaming about a man from Mars too. Very weird. Cowboy-tastic!
It was okay. Kind of all sounded the same
nao curti + ao vivo
I believe that this is my fifth Neil Young album so far? I still think he's pretty good, and I still don't think his vocals are that bad. The first half of this album is a slower, more acoustic half. The songs do slightly bleed together into one I have to say. All very nice and very lovely inoffensive stuff, but nothing that I would actively choose to pick out necessarily. The second half is where the grungey hard rock comes in, and I like it a hell of a lot more than the first half. Young is a great guitar player. The solo on 'Powderfinger' is great and the fast rocking riff on 'Sedan Delivery' is a proper foot tapper. There's not much more I can say that would add anything extra to my previous four reviews of Neil Young albums. I would have given this a three, but I did say I was going to be harsher in my ratings. First half would be a 1.5, second half a 3. Overall I'm rounding down to a two.
I actually had the first song already in my liked songs… otherwise this shit’s weird his voice progressively got worse and the names kept getting weirder I might like welfare mothers??? Specifically when he sings DIVORCEE - it kinda was giving?????? I don’t hate it? But it did give me a headache sooooo
I never really understood what made Neil Young popular or lauded. This recording sounds like it was taken from the next room over, the music (aside from sedan delivery) isn't wildly innovative for the time, and lyrically it feels only fine. Maybe it isn't for me?
Did I dislike it? No. Did I like it? Not especially. It was OK but pretty much unremarkable and not deserving of a spot on this list. Would I want to listen to it again? Not really. 2.5/5
Second half starts to sound a little like rock and roll—but first half is just the same, whiney cords and pretty much the same, whiney lyrics from the same, whiney voice.
Squeaky voice, can’t stand it.
Sounds like every other Neil Young work I've heard. Interesting, but not that engaging. He sounds quite morose. Lots of guitars, some of them pleasant enough, but not enough variation in mood or tempo, for me.
Something of a disappointment. Neil Young is at his best when he's not making a bloody racket. He's making a bloody racket for much of Rust Never Sleeps. I guess the clue is in the title, right? More harmonies, less lumberjack please.
Not a fan of Neil but he tries
