11/24/2021 Today's Album: "Rust Never Sleeps" by Neil Young - I didn't really care for this album. I respect Neil Young for being one of the best folk artists of the 70s and I think the guitar work and vocals in this album are great, but after the first song, this album does very little for me to stay invested. Each song sounds like it should be covered on a muppets folk album and I get sick of the instrumentation really quickly, as the soloing instrument is ususally a harmonica and the rest of the instrumentals are so similar to each other throughout the album. The second half has more distorted guitar, but its sort of an obnoxious effect. I also just am not really into the asthetic of a country boy out on the farm and the only thing this album offers outside of that is if John Denver made an entire album that was just rocky mountain high. The only reason this album will not be receiving anything lower than the score it is getting is because I understand that this is a solid folk album and that Neil Young is a legend. Liked the harmonica. Contrast between the start and end of the album was cool. Fantastic lines: I wish a was a trapper I would give thousand pelts To sleep with Pocahontas And find out how she felt In the mornin' On the fields of green In the homeland We've never seen

It's fine. Both Hey^2, My^2 versions and Powderfinger are good. Rest is meh. 5/10

I object primarily to it being a live album.

It is just alright. I did not really care for it. The songs were inconsistent in style. Remove the folk songs and it would get a higher rating.

track 01 - went on for way too long, already had bias against this song without ever having heard the full track track 02 - really liked the guitars here, more folk-y sound track 03 - silly song, meeting a martian? really tired of neil's vocals track 04 - big yikes, same vocal pattern as usual, singing about indigenous massacres from a white person's perspective, talking about sleeping with pocahontas?!?!!!? track 05 - sorry i fell asleep track 06 - electric guitar?! i'm awake again. feeling that riff and the ooo ooooos in the background track 07 - shut the fuck uppppp

“It’s better to burn out than fade away” Neil says in my my hey hey. At nearly 80 years old, somehow he’s managed neither. Fortunate for his bank account, unfortunate for those of us who are not hearing impaired because this fucking sucks. All of Neil young’s music sucks. Maybe it was just a ”had to be there” thing from the 70s but I will never appreciate his music, and his voice is like the most wheedling 4 year old whinging in your ear. . This is my second album from him, and I will never listen to another Neil young anything ever again. Irredeemable The lowest one star I can give ⭐️

Life's too short to force myself to listen to Neil Young. Hard pass. I did actually listen to some of it. It was not good. Dude has a crazy Native American fetish.

I've never been a fan of his voice. It almost physically hurts my ears. Its hard to enjoy/listen the music because of that. But the songs seem ok.

Just awful. Such a surprising let down by an artist I truly respect. The first half, the acoustic side, sounds like any a collection of any post Peter Paul and Mary folk tunes about nothing in particular and I’ve spent a lifetime as a musician and listener trying to avoid exactly the sort of pointless rock & roll epitomized by the electric b-side. I will do everything in my power to never listen to another bar of music from this album ever again.

This album specifically is not my cup of tea. Some of the subject matter on this album is rather odd. Welfare Mothers in particular is a very interesting choice for a song lol. I can't say that the entire album is bad. There's some guitar breaks and riffs in songs like Powderfinger that are good. But overall, can't really say that this is an album that I would listen to ever again.

No, a big no. I don't understand why this album is on the list. Harvest definitely shoukd be on this list but, a live album which from the 9 tracks 2 are the same.. no. Recorded live but the vocals in a studio sounds cheating as well. Also, this is boring, felt like a chore to go through this album and even if they rocked hard, it sounded like a bunch of teenagers could do better. 1/5

oh this song. sure. a little too earnestly maudlin for me, and fuuuck harmonica man. instrumentals (other than that fuckass harmonica) are decent enough. voice is crazy annoying though, i don't think i'm in a bad mood (yet, only halfway through the album, ugh) so i can confidently say that i'll never enjoy this guy second version of my my hey hey is better but i don't like the repeat

I used to go to this bar on a Friday night and play 10 Neil Young tracks in a row and do magic tricks. Most everyone loved it, except for one person who worked there, they always looked so angry.

Beautiful music, but also makes me want to fall asleep on a rainy day. That's not necessarily a bad thing, if you are in that mood. Neil Young is very focused on lyrics. Also not a bad thing. However, it means you won't get much in the instrumental department. If you're into instruments it could be disappointing. The songs that he tries to go upbeat are the worst songs. Stick to the slow stuff, Neal.

From the first track, I was rapidly losing patience with this album, and I was completely over it by "Pocahontas," so after that I gave maybe a minute or two to each song in hope of something better before skipping to the next, so my highlight/lowlight callouts will verge on meaningless; it was all bad to me. On songs like "Powderfinger" where I was in danger of enjoying the music, it was never long before Neil Young's reedy, whining voice was back to torment me with some cringe and insipid lyrics. Best: "Powderfinger" (for the guitar) Worst: "Pocahontas" (the last full song I listened to)

Still struggling to understand how people can like Neil Young. They rave on and on about his influence and you go listen and it's just a guy who sucks. First 2 songs were fine then it just goes straight down to the toilet

I'm not sure why we have to listen to this before we die. It's a tight 38 minutes and it's felt long and underwhelming. Neil Young, CSN will drop in popularity as the Boomers kick it. I don't see their appeal. There is so much more interesting music from their contemporaries. It might be my deep dislike of NY's flat, frilly vocals. He's no Thom Yorke or Jeff Buckley.

I’m not listening to anymore Neil Young. I heard there are like 13 of his albums on here. I tried with one record, hated it. I’ve hated his music all my life, and I’ve actually heard a fair amount of it cause I have a buddy that owns like all 113 records he’s put out. There literally is not single piece I’ve ever heard of his that I’ve enjoyed. Don’t need to hear this record to know it’s a big fat goose egg from me. Fuck you, Neil Young. 0.5/5 He gets a half a point for not writing Destiny’s Child’s Survivor.

Meh. I kinda like Neil Young when he does country-rock, but this album is just 90 % country. Worse, it’s (very) slow country. I really can’t relate, sorry. There’s only so much harmonica and soft guitar I can take in a day, and I reached my limit about halfway through the album. This must be a North-American thing. Something about pick-up trucks and long boring drives. I tried to find reasons to give it a 2*, but there’s really nothing that stands out, it just sounds like every country album ever. Neil Young has done much better albums, why include this one ? Do we really need half his discography on this list ?

I enjoyed powder finger I felt like this album was a wanna be bob Dylan singing mediocre songs about native Americans. Only one or 2 songs grabbed me and I found it to be dull for the most part.

‘Pocahontas’ captures what I find so risible about Neil Young. It starts by describing the Native American genocide in boilerplate terms: 'they killed the buffalo', 'they came with their firesticks', 'modern life is all shingled roofs and taxicabs'. It's trite, but harmless. Next though, he describes how he wants to fuck Pocahontas so she can tell him how she ‘felt’ about it, while Neil (we can imagine) noodles on the guitar and tells her how she's 'totally right on, man'. The track's final image, and I suspect Young's real fantasy, is of he and Pocahontas sitting around a fire discussing indigenous rights with Marlon Brando. Shortly after this track there's a corker about how Welfare Mothers make better lovers. Here Neil is even more out to sea than he was with the Native Americans, with the only touchstones he can conjure being the city laundromat and loitering on the street with her multitude of children. I guess you could say that anything Neil Young is about the guitar playing: make a fucking guitar album then Neil, and keep your trap shut. 1*

I thought the more of hear this guy is finally get it. But man. It's just terrible. I hate how he doesn't really sing but clearly doesn't have any flow like a rapper either. I must have dozed off because somewhere around the halfway point someone plugged in a guitar which at least made it listenable. Probably because it went a little way to masking his horrible lyrics and voice. Every time he is on my list I swear at myself for blowing to listen to these albums the whole way through.

Harvest: good yield Rust never sleeps: rusty indeed. I do not quite get the semi live/studio approach. On this rendition, the typical Neil Young's piercing voice is really like tiring for the ears...

Neil Young has always interested me because despite being a successivement folk veteran in the ’60s, he later chose to embrace a dusty, rugged rock sound, going against the grain of most of his peers. Both sides of him are present on this album, but being more « into the Black » than « out of the Blue » myself, I’m left frustrated—especially since the acoustic parts are disappointing. The whole “better to burn out than to rust” spirit comes through more clearly in latest parts of his discography. This record, however, feels unbalanced and rather unremarkable to me.

Welfare mothers just completely took my out of this album, listening with 2024 sensibilities telling people welfare queens fuck good makes the entire project unlistenable. I tried to find information, trying to find concrete evidence it was satire or something but all i got was a couple of fans saying it's obviously a joke and a few more saying neil was going through a phase during this time.

Neil Young was supposedly 34 when this album was recorded but I'd bet two nickels he was actually 85. I can't otherwise understand how he somehow sounds like an old man shaking his fist at clouds in the sky. Seriously - picture Ab Simpson when you listen to his whiney, shakey voice with no range at all. Maybe Neil Young was the voice actor for that character all along.

Don’t like Neil Young

Like hearing foxes scream in the street.

I don't love Neil's nasal voice, and the mix of the rest of the band is kind of thin and mid-heavy.

I'm in the minority, but I can't stand this. It's boring folk with Neil Young's whiny voice. A close friend & I talk about this because she loves Neil Young, but I've yet to find the majority of his work redeeming. Honestly, this whole genre can take a hike.

This album was heading for a 2, for being mostly inoffensive, laid-back, if overly boring folk. But then Welfare Mothers came on, and I could no longer claim this album to be inoffensive or laid-back. I don't know if it's the live recording or the band just sucks, but their half-assed attempts at 'rocking' on the next track Sedan Delivery were downright embarrassing. The redux of Hey Hey My My has a weird conflict of guitars that are trying to sound rough and rugged, but with Neil Young's wishy-washy, dainty vocals the whole thing becomes unconvincing and farcical. I award Neil 1 dumbell, so he might lift it to get his testosterone up a bit, or maybe tie it around his nutsack, so that his balls might finally drop. 🔩

Saw another review saying something along the lines of this is a terrible introduction to Neil Young if you've never heard his work before and I'm inclined to agree. This is the first time I've ever tried to listen to an album by him and it was one of the most tediously boring listens since I've started on this website.

Neil Young may just genuinely not be for me. So much crooning, so little interesting riffs.

Can't find it on Tidal, so skip. Probably a year or so later I come back to take a stab at the albums I missed or skipped on the first run through, and by about track 3 I'm thinking that I might actually have preferred to slit my wrists. His voice is not exactly good, the guitars are, when they're not jangly, oppressively strummy. I'm not going to finish this, am I? No.
