Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Pretty solid 70s rock album, nice mix of acoustics & hard rockers, nice listen.

Has a few nice moments here & there, but overall felt it was pretty whatever.

Rigtig folkrock, lidt livenumre, mangler lidt sammenhængskraft

First and last songs were the best

that’s quite enough of neil young for me

ok thanks

Eka kappale heti tuttu, tosin toisen versioimana. En tiedä mikä on orkkis. Tai sit se on tää?? Livelevy ehkä? Kuullostaa vähän siltä, mutta yleisö mykistetty. Perus hyvää kantria, muutama vähän rokimpi veto. Parhaat: My My Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue), Thrasher, Sail Away

good listen

A solid rock album! I prefer Neil Young’s solo work or Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young but I still had a great time with this listen!

12/1001 Second Neil Young album in my first 12 (CSN&Y -Deja Vu). It’s not bad, actually better than most Neil in my opinion, but just not my vibe. Not huge fan of his voice, it’s too whiny to me. But I can see how this could someone’s favorite album. The music is strong and Neil is a pretty good lyricist.

His voice is just not for me

it's Neil Young..hard to say anything bad about him. This is a great album simply bc he made it but not my fave or a run back for a second listen - if it's playing, great !! but I agree w TightnShiny : ) Rust Live on repeat any day

Neil Young isn't my scene, but "My, My. Hey, Hey" pulled me in. He's got a soulful way about him. I don't know much about him, but I can tell he's experienced a thing or two in life.

O lado acustico não me prendeu totalmente, mas o lado eletrico me pegou forte. fortissimo. da pra perceber a influencia que esse album teve em varias bandas dos anos 90. foda demais ! 3.5/5

This was a fun listen. It's not as hard of a rock album as I was expecting it to be and had a lot of good bits. Nothing groundbreaking for me personally though. 3.5/5

I liked this better than the other suggested Neil Young album I've gotten (After the Gold Rush). I found his voice less grating- maybe the music suited it better. I also enjoyed the music style more, which maintained some of the folksiness but also had more rock to it. I'd guess it's the addition of Crazy Horse instead of solo NY that made the difference for me. That said, beating the first one was a low bar to cross. I'd consider this album fine to good, with the last few songs being the best part. Overall: 2.75/5

Interesting album, includes "Hey hey my my", a classic song I already knew. I was not aware of the electric version of it, and was surprised of the powerful fuzz riff. I liked "Powderfinger" and was surprised by the punky feel of "Sedan Delivery" The rest of songs were pleasant to listen to. Anyway, the album might have a lot of impact on its day, for me seems a bit undefined on and some songs are just fine

Great songs, but is it a great album?

6/10…Folk Rock / Singer Songwriter

1st and last songs are good rest I don’t like

Not his best.

Rust never sleeps but I was a bit sleepy during this and I would have completely dozed off if this was longer than 38 minutes. When I saw the cover pop up I thought I was due for an extra special 2 hour Neil Young snore-athon live concert and I’m actually pretty grateful that wasn’t the case. First song rings a bell because it features Kurt Cobain’s suicide note but the songs in the first half really aren’t that remarkable. There’s something gently quaking and epic in Neil Young but also really tedious, dragging and dull. Few interesting melodies going on and he always has to sing in that silly squeaky voice of his. Album does build more in magnitude in the second half. Powderfinger is a strong highlight even though at times it sounds like a rubbishier Sound Of Silence. Overall, probably one of the better Neil Young releases.

No se me hizo un mal álbum pero tampoco veo mucho que destacarle, algunas canciones me gustaron, otras las podría escuchar nada más de fondo. He escuchado mejores canciones de folk rock pero creo que fue un buen exponente del género.

I honestly like most of Young albums but this is just annoying high pitch singing without much appeal for me

Highlights: Thrasher, Hey Hey My My. In a nutshell: "rock and roll will never die" I always resented that this was marketed as a live album. Any live recordings with dominant overdubs should be marketed as a “live studio album”. That aside, this album is good. Not quite a concept album yet it follows a loose storyline. The closer is *chef’s kiss* Overall: 6/10

Interesting concept with a (relatively) mellow acoustic and a noisy electric side with songs recorded live. Highlights: "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" and "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" (memorable riff), "Thrasher" (much mellower than you'd expect a song called "Thrasher" to sound like...nice acoustic guitar work), "Pocahontas", "Powderfinger" (rocking story song)

Such a great opening track. I grew up hearing this album at home but never properly listened through it as an adult until now. Solid.

I’ve actually never listened to this one before but I definitely liked it. Will look to pick up a copy.

++: My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), Ride My Llama, Pocahontas, Welfare Mothers, Sedan Delivery, Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) +: Sail Away, Powderfinger +-: Thrasher 7,7/10

Not my cuppa tea... Ride my llama var ret fed til gengæld

Great folk-rock, but not so much to my taste

Not a huge Neil Young fan but this album was pretty alright.

3- Stars (7/15)

Pretty good imo. Like his voice, a bit slow sometimes

It was Neil young, it's a good album

7/10 Highlights My My Hey Hey

Very good!

This is perhaps the most listenable Neil Young we've had so far, but the bar is set pretty low. I never thought that 1001 albums would fuel a dislike of Neil Young, an artist I always had sorta liked, but here we are. The back half of this still dragged, but overall, a 3.

I guess I liked this better than most of the other Neil Young. Have I gotten them all yet? Please? There have been at least five before this one

I did not hate this. Why the odd start to my review? Because I don't really much like Neil Young's singing voice. However, it was often fitting here and only sometimes did it bug me. It is not like ANY musician who's voice I struggle with NEVER has a good song to me. It just needs to fit with the style. In this album I feel he was more ... accurate? to his vocal style. I know that I will never "love" his voice. And that is OK. I think the key here is to acknowledge that for some it is the voice of a god. I won't disagree with any of those people that some of the songs here are amazing. I will take a pass at "every" song being such. But such is taste and such is life.

The opening/closing tracks are really iconic. The middle parts don't connect with me as much though. I probably need to do a more critical listening while not at work.

I’m a bit torn here. I’m a huge Neil Young fan and I get why they chose this record. My My, Hey Hey, Powderfinger, Pocahontas - these are some of Neil’s greatest songs. The others, not so much. I mean Ride My Llama or Sedan Delivery could just be left on the editing room floor. For my money Neil has much better works like Zuma, After the Gold Rush or Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. Rating it three stars because of Powderfinger which is one of my most favorite songs but honestly this can also be two stars.

Nice for singing songs by the campfire.

I love Neil and he has a lot of albums on this list. That being said it just doesn’t hold up to some of his other albums

good vibes on this

i dont need more neil young in my life my my hey hey- 5 thrasher- 3 or 4 ride my llama- no thanks. 4 pocahontas- yeah i dont know about this one guys sail away- 5 powderfinger- 5 welfare mothers- 5 sedan delivery- 5 hey hey my my- 4 or 5

Well, well, well, he's back on Spotify. I wonder what changed..? I like a few Young songs very much, but the rest of his stuff doesn't do it for me. 3.

Part folk, part garage rock, with some glimpses of country, punk, and what would go on to become grunge. Starts off mostly acoustic and introspective, then cranks it up for the second half. My favorite track was the scrappy “Sedan Delivery.” I liked hearing the two different versions of “My My, Hey Hey.” I recognize the lyrics from Kurt Cobain's suicide note (“It's better to burn out than to fade away”). I was 12 when I read Kurt's suicide note. Kurt was 12 when this album came out. 3.5

Eh. 3.

I am not a fan of live albums, unless they really add something to the music. This didn't. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

Easy to listen to. It's just there.

Neilton jong? Laatste liedje vond ik het leukst

Actually not bad at all. Haven’t skipped or added anything, which makes it a 3. I hope this isn’t country (actually it can’t be it’s literally rock but it’s similar), because I enjoyed it in a way.

Dad music, pretty good. nothing particular stood out to me

Album sympa, parfois des morceaux un peu mieux mais globalement rien de bien mémorable à mes oreilles Ni bon ni mauvais

Nice songs. Enjoyed listening.

Not a great fan of Neil Young, so this was a bit of a slog, a few decent songs, but very nothing to light a fire.

Good album, reminds me a lot of R.E.M. so could very well have been an inspiration but who knows. An enjoyable listen but a little slower pace, with some slightly odd lyrics etc. so maybe not quite for me.

Decent

it's better to burn out than to fade away..my motto for the rest of 25.

Never been a Neil Young fan and not going to start now apparently. Songs are well written and the performances are engaged and well executed, but I just don’t feel anything with this music. I’m glad I listened front to back. Just not for me.

I'm still not sold on Neil Young. He's fine, I liked this fine. I preferred the sound of the heavier, rockier last 3 songs on the album: Welfare Mothers, Sedan Delivery, and Hey Hey, My My (I also liked how this mirrored the opening My My, Hey Hey, a neat touch). I liked the lyrics of Pocahontas also. But no strong opinions from me here.

Emotional and powerful. Especially the opener is a cult classic in the Young catalogue and for me a good opener is one of the most important parts of a record. This isn't my favorite Neil Young record but it is definitely an enjoyable record, a heavy hitter, but a powerful one, the songs are quite political and stark, but have meaning. Overall an impressive piece. Favorite track: my, my, hey, hey. Overall score 7.0/10

Most of it didn't interest me

Classic Neil Young.

Let's be honest. Neil likes to speak the truth. But man is he dillusional. He think he can have a threesome with Pocahontas and Marlin Brando. lol.

Woodstock revisited. Couple of really good songs.

Just ok, but didn’t listen closely.

This is old rock. Not my thing really. It is too calm and quiet. I think maybe would be nice 20 years on. But it just sounds very sleepy and not much is happening. Nice to listen to something which hasn't been digitally processed much though. I quite like Powderfinger.

Not bad need to finish

I don't really get the need for the live but not live parts of this album. Neil Young is a great story teller and is beautiful on the guitar. I do feel like I need to be in a melancholy mood to listen to him, to truly lose myself in the lyrics. (Besides the last two songs, they went hard for Neil Young, and I wasn't hating it!) Today is not that mood so its more of a 3, but on a different day I could give it a 4. Side note, he wants to hang with Pocahontas and Marlon Brando...rando!

Neil Young definitely has his vibe. He's okay. He cranks out a pretty good song once in awhile but mostly it's a little slow for my speed. His sound kinda drags and lacks energy. Interesting that My My, Hey has two versions. I like the electric one at the end better. The rest of the album was okay. Not really his most creative or best work.

Damn, that harmonica makes me swoon. And I'm a sucker for any song about a llama. Really loved how sentimental most of this was. It felt very Americana, in a lovely way, not a 'Merica way. Except Welfare Mothers, that was a weird song and not sure exactly what he was getting at there. This borders on 4, but not sure I'm quite there with it.

I like it 7.1/10

I have never been a big Neil Young fan. I recognize his writing talent, though.

^Rust^ is a good album, but I think ^Everybody Knows this is Nowhere^ is a more deserving Neil Young album. I really loved the haunting quality of a lot of the songs on ^Everybody Knows this is Nowhere.^ In my mind, ^Everybody^ is purer Neil Young, while ^Rust^ is Neil Young with mainstream rock influence.

Track one got me really excited, but it was kind of downhill from there.

★★★½

This album is hit or miss. The opening and closing songs, Powderfinger, and Pocahontas are classic Neil Young but the rest of the album wanders between mediocre and bad

Ihan jees

Not a big fan of Neil Young.

I’m not entirely sure I get Neil Young but this was reasonably enjoyable

Like it overall, though only one or two songs really stand out because every other track kind of sounds the same to me (its still good tho).

More enjoyable than I sometimes find Neil Young. Less reedy on his voice and enjoyed that the guitar playing was more present. 3.5 stars

Beautiful guitar chords. Start of the album is so slow and bleak. Album really picks up at the halfway mark. Favourite tracks: Powderfinger, Welfare Mothers, Sedan Delivery, Hey Hey My My (Into the Black). Verdict: Decent

ihan hyvä

Another Neil Young album, another three-star review.

When yet another Neil Young album popped up on this list, I felt a sense of dismay. However did like the heavy guitar distortion on the second version of “Hey Hey, My My” which added some extra punch.

Really good bookends make this album. His voice is still a mix of wavery and whiney, but songwriting is excellent. Passionate delivery.

Hey hey, my my and it's inverse are great timeless songs. Everything in between was good, but I won't remember as well... Except maybe Pocahontas.

It was alright. A bit rougher rock than what I expected. Stil, Neil young's vocals are not my thing.

Not their best

A nice mix of acoustic and electronic tracks. Young's voice is quite relaxing and lovely to listen to, but I do get the common criticism that everything starts to blend together.

Same as the previous Neil Young album. The lyrics are good but the voice and style doesn't always resonate with me.

Favorite Tracks: “My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)”, “Pocahontas”, “Welfare Mothers”, “Sedan Delivery”, “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)”

I can tell that it is good but not really my genre of choice so can only give it a 3

I like the switches between hard rock and soft country. Don’t like the poetry monologues. They are so funny.

no me gusta este tipo de música, muy repetitivo

I just don't care about Neil Young!!!!

3,5/5 Sympa pour des randonnées, rock à l’ancienne

Welp, their best album was decidedly their first. This was harmonica-heavy at least (@Thrasher), a 3-

I did not use a private spotify session. This album is everything I thought it would be; however I won't be coming back to it. Never been a huge Neil Young fan, this album dd not change my mind. Not band, mind you, but not worthy of repeating.

One of Neil Young's better records in a long and impressive career. The first half focuses on acoustic cuts, while the second half turns up the distortion for a heavier rocking sound (which would end up inspiring grunge bands in the '90s). This album also includes one of Young's finest songs - Powderfinger. Highlights: -My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) -Powderfinger -Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) Lowlights: -Sedan Delivery

Nothing more to say than a good old rock and country album.

this is a perfectly fine album. nothing spectacular.

The last few songs really carry this album. Young has a good voice but until the last half the songs blend too much together. Sedan Delivery is really good

This album has too excellent songs and the rest I'm not fond of. The two great songs are My My, Hey Hey and Powderfinger.

Good stuff but I’ve heard better from Old Neil

Unfortunately a bit boring to me. Maybe another album of him hits better for me.

A more somber, and dark side of Neil. Strong, emotional lyrics with a slower tune. Neil was sad when he wrote this album. Pretty good. But too Depressing for me.

Really really solid 3. If were to I listen to it more, I might even bump it up to a 4.

Added My My, Hey Hey (out of the blue) to a playlist. Pretty good overall.

Same great Neil Young voice and overall sound. This has a little more rock influence in it that comes through but it still feels like Neil. My my, hey hey was my favorite.

Maybe I'm saying something that Neil Young fans already know, but Crazy Horse brings out the best of Neil Young. Normally, I can't stand Young's voice, I hate his particular tenor, and the way he plays his guitar, but goddamn. This was good. This is the first Neil Young album that I've legitimately enjoyed. If anyone wants an entry point to Neil Young, start here.

It's a fine Neil Young album, interesting mix of acoustic and electric tracks. The standouts are the two versions of "Hey Hey My My" and "My My Hey Hey", the electric version was clearly influential on the grunge scene that came up in the early 90s. But personally, this isn't one of my essential Neil Young albums.

Some nice songs, with nice melodies, singing and guitar work.

First half: 🥱 Second half: kinda cool, why wasn’t the whole album like this ??

3.5. Weird but kinda good

Neil Young has a high floor that prevents him from making anything bad, but he also has a low ceiling on this that keeps him in the “good, not great” range.

Love the opener and the closer. I decided the opener is slightly better than the closing track but both are awesome! The rest of this album was okay. Neil Young is another one of those artists that I've never fully delved into. He has such a deep and daunting catalog which is still expanding!

Great live album.

Creative songwriting and a great band help this album along. A bit more effort to really get the songs to the next level, along with improved vocals, would help a bit more.

almost got me this time 6/10

Heartfelt, bluesy and a whole other world from what I listen to most. I liked the energy

Kind of country, reminds me of dad music a little bit. Fave song: sedan delivery

Good album, bit soft

Interesting listening to Neil Young with stronger instrumentation. Very story songy with a heavy theme of burning out vs fading away. Not a huge fan of his voice but overall would listen again.

Maybe a 3 1/2

The softer songs are easy to forget about given the title and its reputation. But they work better than some of the electric stuff. But a solid album

-not bad at all! I think this is my favorite instance of Neil Young’s voice I’ve heard so far (compared with After the Gold Rush and the CSNY album). The gradual transition into heavier rock was cool. I hope Neil got his dream of becoming a Native American -Favorites are My My, Hey Hey, Pocahontas, and Sail Away

The Good: we learned something new today, and that is that Rust Never Sleeps… The Bad: if rust never sleeps, it means it just keeps expanding… The Ugly: the whole world covered in rust, and no sleep… nightmare! Let it be reiterated: I really don’t like Neil Young. Let is be noted: I actually enjoyed album, maybe because it is technically speaking a live album, and there is a real good groove going on, I don’t know… but I feel conflicted. The guitar work is awesome, the production work even better as you hardly notice it is live, and the harmonica work is eerily perfect. So what do I give this album? Should I deduct points for Neil being Neil? Needle is at the 3*, will give it one more listen, and see if the needle adds a point…

first half folk second half garage, good nonetheless. favorite track: powderfinger

Quite a raw, emotional album. The song writing is good but apart from a couple of songs, I was wanting to skip most of them.

I'm not a huge Neil Young fan, but I kind of get what people like about him

Good good

Aurora Borealis. Big 3

I can't complain, but not a personal favorite.

Very solid, but I don't really go with the lyrics or overall vibe. 3/5

This was alright, but I wasn't blown away by anything in particular. Of all the Neil Young that's come up on this list so far, this seemed the most whining-induced vocals from Young himself, but nothing that's really out of the ordinary.

Standard Neil Young. Not much else to say about that.

I don't know .. there are some good songs on here, but Neil Young just bugs me. Is it his whiney voice? Like I said, IDK what to think about this one. I do like the opening and closing songs ... and powder finger .... but I wouldn't run out to buy it.

The first song was a banger and made me think I was gonna love this. Unfortunately nothing after that stood out as something I’d want to listen to again. 6/10

I was less into this than Harvest. I like Neil Youngs voice and his sense of melody. He writes some stuff that feels quite timeless. Sometimes it feels like you've known songs of his forever, even if it's your first time hearing it. This album had less of that sense than Harvest. Also I tend to like it more when he leans into the rockier side of things, and this album was more singer songwriter, which didnt do it for me as much. Powderfoot was probably my favorite. Album cover: (B) Seems kind of a Mish mash of styles that work, but not super well.

This is really nothing special for a late 70s rock album, and Neil Young still has an irritating voice.

I enjoyed this more than I expected I would

i like neil young so this was pretty good

Another Neil young, solid but nothing special 6/10

This album feels raw, like a jam session on the edge of something real. The acoustic moments have a Dylan-like vibe, stripped down but heavy with meaning. The electric parts are fuzzed-out and messy, a bit like early Crazy Horse mixed with The Stooges’ energy. It has this gritty blend of folk and rock that’s both casual and chaotic, but still intentional in its roughness. The whole thing moves between tender and reckless, sometimes in the same breath.

Ive had a lot of Neil Young so far and whilst its stopped annoying me and ive begun to see the value in it, i havent become a massive fan. This seems a nice middle ground between his singer/songwriter work and the harder Crazy horse stuff. It ticked along well but im not coming back to it

This is the first Neil Young album I have been given and I’m conflicted. The first side of this album just felt very one note. All the songs sounded the same and Neil just comes across as “old man yells at punk rock kids and obsesses over nature”. Most of it is fine, some of does sound good, but there is very little variety between the songs. And honestly, I’m not a fan of Neil’s voice. It’s that weird high-pitched folky voice that either you like or can get on your nerves and I’m the latter camp. The second side brings in Crazy Horse, but it doesn’t fare much better. Welfare Mothers and Sedan Delivery did nothing for me. They’re both ridiculous and not in a good way. There are two saving graces, however. Powderfinger is probably one of the best songs about someone getting obliterated by a gunboat ever. Niche genre really. But for real, this was a nice song. But the real highlight was Hey Hey Me Me (not to be confused with My My Hey Hey, the starting track). I think the bookend song idea is cute, but I really enjoyed the last track more. It really did bring out the Neil’s emotions toward the approaching trend of punk and the decline of tradition rock more so than the first track. Really, it’s Powderfinger and Hey Hey Me Me that save this album for me. Other than that, this doesn’t really bode well for the other Neil Young albums to come soon. I hope he gets better…please. Favorite track: Hey Hey Me Me Other Hits: Powderfinger, My My Hey Hey, Thrasher

In the vast world of white men singing blues songs about some rural parts of the usa with fading voices, this is on the better side. (my my, hey hey is actually quite good but please give this dude a drummer)

Pretty good overall. I won't add any songs to my liked songs but I enjoyed listening to it. 6/10

Oh yeah it was fine whatever

I absolutely love the first track, my my hey hey (out of the blue) All three stars are for that track.

i thought the start was pretty okay, the acoustic guitar was nice. the end picked up (i liked welfare mothers and thought the end was stronger overall). not a huge fan, but it could be worse. quite mid for me.

The acoustic songs in the first half are nice if although they all sound pretty similar. The rock songs in the second half are good though, though young Neil young voice sounds a little extra whiney. Still a great Canadian musician

Over all I do like Neil Young, I like his sound and lyrics but I don't think this album will be in regular rotation

eh it was okay tired of all these rock albums but it got me through my run

3.5 After a brutal stretch of albums, I can’t even begin to tell you how annoyed I was when I saw our 157th Neil Young album pop up, but this actually turned out to be a bit of a pleasant surprise. I don’t know if Mr. Young needs Crazy Horse behind him for me to find his music enjoyable or just more instrumentation in general to help mask his whiny, high-pitched, warbling voice, but I thought this was leagues better than his earlier solo stuff. The acoustic stuff worked for me, the transition to electric had me rocking, and the bookending of the two with My, My, Hey, Hey and Hey, Hey, My, My was the icing on the cake. While I won’t claim to be the biggest fan of the aforementioned songs (Hell, I didn’t even realize the original recordings were live or that there were even two versions for that matter), they still hold somewhat of a special place in my heart. I have always loved the phrase “Out of the blue, into the black” - I don’t know if it originates here, but I most commonly associate it with Stephen King’s It, which credits the quote to Neil Young as a sort of introduction in its opening pages. As a big fan of both the novel and its movie adaptations (ironic as someone who hates clowns), the quote has always seemed to summarize the story perfectly to me. I also love the shoutout to Johnny Rotten (who most likely hates the song), especially being that the previous lyric “the king is gone but he’s not forgotten” seems to have foreshadowed his transition from punk royalty to right-wing nutjob. Finally, and probably most dearest to me, is the song’s connection to Kurt Cobain. Obviously that connection is an incredibly dark and tragic one, but it’s one that makes me feel commemorative for a once-in-a-lifetime musician that I hold near and dear to my heart, gone far too soon. One thing I actually learned in reading about this album is that Neil Young retired the song after Cobain’s death but was talked back into playing it by Krist and Dave themselves. Anyway, I’m spending way too much of this talking about one (or I guess two) song(s), but maybe they are the cake for me here and the rest is the icing on the top. I know I’ve complained about this guy’s more folk-leaning stuff before, but something about the Horse With No Name-esque Mojave desert vibes to the acoustic stuff here helped sell it for me. Meanwhile, the electric stuff in the back half has this great, gritty rock energy to it, offering a nice counterbalance to the front. Supposedly the sound would even go on to become a major influence on grunge - my first instinct is to say that I don’t really hear it, but given the earlier Kurt Cobain connection I drew, maybe there’s more there than I realize. Overall, a surprisingly solid album from Neil after quite a few stinkers. Think the dude is just better when he’s rocking out instead of trying to write piano ballads.

Call me old or whatever but Neil Young is the iconic American songwriter and active voice of the nation. Sure as time passed on he developed some concerning views but, hey thats just old people for ya. That being said, his rock n roll oriented music pales in comparison to his folk and songwriter styles. Neil on Harvest moon absolutely butters my biscuit and makes feel at home in a comfy armchair when I'm listening. But this distorted mess is hard to appreciate. If he went riffing in this regard and had a different vocalist that'd be something else. But as a critical listeners, there is alot of substance behind these songs and its not just a gargled mess. So I'll give it 3 stars. Not at all bad just not my cup of tea.

Honestly the first and last songs were my favorite. Everything else was okay. Good easy listening

Still not a Neil Young fan. But, this was one of the better efforts from him. My My, Hey Hey and Sail Away were both particularly good songs to my ears.

Gorgeous music, though the famous bookends are the best parts.

Solid but not my favorite.

some nice vibes going, first track stands pretty well above the rest. though welfare mothers is kind of a banger.

Alright

A great short and sweet live album that's also a good introduction to NY&CH

mixed feeling about this. It's great music but his voice is so unique that the songs sound pretty similar to me. I feel like Jack would love this guy, he probably does.

I love pre grunge :) except when it’s post folk :(

This is perfectly nice, but largely unmemorable. I like Neil Young, so it's a solid 3 stars.

The iconic opening/closing duo + the album's status as "proto-grunge" had me excited for this one...but damn none of these album tracks are the tea for me.

Interesting concept: going from acoustic to electric, although it would have been better if it built throughout. Other than first/last song, the music wasn’t really interesting.

Again, I wish Neil would get someone else to sing his songs for him. Probably go up a full star with a decent singer.

Algunos momentos buenos pero no especialmente chulo. 3

Starts off soft, builds up, gets weird, and ends strong. Interesting to have the same song in two different forms as the bookends. Also interesting to have some live and some not songs.

Не понял альбома

That was not bad. Relaxed sound with a bit of eletric guitar.

Solid easy listening from Mr Young

TBH I'd be happy if this album was just 20 minutes of "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)" followed by 20 minutes of "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)". The rest is decent but not outstanding, but those two songs (or two variants one song?) are just fantastic.

This guy is a little whiny, but tolerable at times.

It was aight, didn’t finish the whole album

A fine selection of Neil Young. A few radio classics, many others new to me, but only a few that really appealed to me--"My my, hey hey" (both versions) and "Powderfinger". I do like the concept of the album's title, and how it inspired him to stay fresh and performing on the road. I also liked how many of the tracks were recorded live, as this seems like his strongest mode. Although his style has never really appealed to me, I can imagine it was fun to hear these played on tour. (And I laughed when it came to the chorus of "Ride my llama", as he pronounced "llama" (lamb-a) a lot like the way an Australian acquaintance of mine pronounced "tacos" (take-ohs). An odd song, in any case.) Pretty cool, too, to hear the second side of this album as an inspiration for grunge (or at least for Pearl Jam, and ignoring the sad connection to Kurt Cobain).

I was at a bar one Friday night and a guy came in and played ten Neil Young songs on the jukebox and then did a magic trick for me. I love Neil Young and thought he was charming and so we got to talking. He asked me out and I agreed. We dated for close to a year, and then one evening he took me to that same bar and proposed by pulling a ring out of his sleeve with “Pocahontas” playing in the background. I said “See the losers in the best bars; Meet the winners in the dives” which he of course knew meant “yes.” We were married for thirty years and had four beautiful children. He passed away in 2022. We held his wake at the same bar where we met. Neil Young played on the jukebox all night. Our eldest son waited until the evening was winding down and went up to his father’s silk-draped coffin. Every eye in the place was on him. You could’ve heard a pin drop (he’s a natural showman just like his father). With tears in his eyes, he looked up and said, “It's better to burn out than fade away” and pulled the silk cloth from the coffin with a flourish. There was a burst of flame and the coffin was gone. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. Except the bartender. That guy was a dick.

I think (and hope) it's the last album of Neil Young on the list. This is a fifth for me. And it's mediocre. I like the guitars.

Just as boring as the last time this came up.

Whoever wrote this list has a throbbing boner for Neil Young. His music is nice. It’s easy to listen to. But I don’t feel like I need to listen to ever second of recorded music he ever put out before I die.

Not a huge fan of Neil Young, but this album wasn't too bad.

Good stuff

Enjoyed the first half of the album more than the second half; this was ok.

Solid Neil Young stuff (including Hey Hey - which is my favorite of his).

It's an interesting album. I had to look it up, but apparently it's a mix of live songs overdubbed in the studio and a few pure studio tracks. I could tell that there was some live recordings in there, but it felt simultaneously authentic and polished. live is tough. Right now, the only live albums I appreciate are Peter Frampton, Adele, and, of course, live jazz, assuming it is miked, mixed, and mastered well (and Frampton Comes Alive passed because it is basically the rock version of a live jazz set). This is a unique choice for a "live" album, that I think works well. Musically? The first and last tracks are classics for a reason, the middle is pretty normal album filer for young, so it's solid at worst.

I want to like Neil Young more, but I just can't.

I liked the start of the album, but then… I don’t know. My interest waned and by the end I didn’t care. Solid musicality throughout, however.

I don't really like the format of this album, which is overdubbed live tunes combined with a couple outtakes from the studio. It's also half acoustic and half electric, which makes it feel even more disjointed. There's good-to-excellent material here, but the execution was flawed.

Another enjoyable NY album. After the first 3 tracks I thought it might become my favourite of his, but nah. There’s some nice stuff on here but it’s only really the opener and closer that are essential listening in my opinion. The ahead-of-its-time grunginess of Hey Hey, My My, and the enthusiastic reactions of die-hard rock ’n’ roll believers in the crowd to hearing My My, Hey Hey for the first time are both album high points. 3.5

excelente live folk

Americana blues / rock. Easy listening for a saturday morning.

I hope this is the last Neil Young off this list. I mean his songs are decent but there's nothing new to look forward to with his other songs. It's all the same.

Alright, but I liked the previous two Neil Young albums I rated more.

5.5/10 A game of two halves, this Quite liked the first half, folky country rock with nice vibes and the vocal style worked very well Second, more rocky, half was sloppy, not so fun, and had some less good lyrics Best: Pocahontas

Ok 3/5

Okay... for a country album...

My fave Neil album so far. It felt lively and I the message really came through

This is mellow but if you didn’t know that about Neil Young then I guess you do now. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all mellow but you’re not going to be destroying personal property in your own personal mosh pit. All in all, this is an OK album. There are beautifully written songs and then there are songs that he really didn’t know what to say and just threw some words to the wind to see what God felt like saying. If you know Neil then you know what to expect. That’s about all I’ve got. Choice cut: Hey hey, my my (either one)

I didn’t mind today’s album, but I can’t say with any honesty that it really made much of an impact on me, other than thinking, “Oh yeah, he’s got a bit of a weird voice.” It didn’t grate in any way, but I’d certainly say that the music kind of just blended into the background as I was listening, until all of a sudden I noticed that music was no longer playing. Overall, I think I’d have to say I’m completely neutral about this album.

My my hey hey (into the blue) - Kurt cobain line goes hard. Kinda vibey harmonica Thrasher - Vibey, harmonica goes hard again, quite long. Ride my llama - great name, “peru to texacan” banging lines. No harmonica :( Pocahontas - Vibey, probably vibiest one yet. Sail away - Powderfinger - Vibey lyrics Welfare Mothers - Clapping makes it fun to listen to Sedan delivery - guitar goes crazy thru the song. Hey hey my my (into the black) - much different than into the blue even with similar lyrics

Good mix of country-folk rock. I'm not a huge fan of Neil, but he does have some iconic songs. "Hey Hey, My My", is definitely one of those. Overall, it is a good listen.

My my hey hey

I quite like Neil Young, I thought this was a pretty good album although I probably didn't pay as much attention while it was playing as I could have. Fave Track: My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue) Rating: 3

This was ok

Generic Mid Tier 70s/80s jam "rock". Very bluesy feel to it, not bad, but not a preferred style of music for me.

Love me some Neil Young

Lovely to listen to some Neil young. His voice has always grated on me and despite his status as a legend I can’t get past it. That said, it’s a beautiful album.

I liked this more than some of Neil Young's other stuff. No real significant feelings tho.

Generally not a fan of live albums with a couple exceptions, but this wasn't one of them. I'm very familiar with the popular Neil Young songs and like them a lot (there were two featured on this album). But even those I think I'd rather listen to the studio versions, and the rest of the songs were fine, but nothing special.

I think Neil young is a fantastic song writer and story teller. Unfortunately I don’t like the sound of his singing voice. 3.5/5

It’s okay. Don’t love it, don’t hate it.

I like the first half of the album much better

It was okay

Loved Hey Hey, My My. The rest was also fine. Good ol' classic rock.

This was pretty good, my tolerance for Neil is pretty low despite multiple attempts to try and get him. I dunno, the second half is much better, almost a punk album.

C'était bon mais pas aussi intéressant que l'autre album de NY que j'ai écouté.

can't really remember this honestly. three stars

Classic Neil. 3.75

I liked the acoustic renditions, but otherwise the album had quite a few songs that just blended together.

I expected so much better. “On the Beach” gave me hope that this would be engaging and interesting. That album was fantastic both musically and lyrically. This album…well it was alright. The first half was boring. I’m just gonna get that out of the way. Musically, the songs all existed in the same space and sounded too much alike. I’d have to listen again for lyrics because honestly, I spaced out. The second half, especially near the end, really kicks up the energy and grit. It gave it the lift it needed to be a three star album as opposed to a two star album. It saved it. On the whole, this was fine but I do think it would’ve been better served if the energetic songs were mixed in with the more chill songs. Three stars. Standout tracks: Powderfinger, Sedan Delivery, Hey, Hey, My, My (Into the Black)

Solid album, nothing ground breaking.

skroz okej

I meant it's alright

69/100 Giggity

not my cup of tea

A couple of great tunes but most of it was forgettable.

typisch Neil Young

Wholesome

It was alright, I liked the last two tracks the most

5/14/24. Never been a huge Neil Young fan but this was a decent listen, loved that it was heavier. The last track alone really lifted this album for me, love the riff!

Standard Neil Young

Another average album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, they have a really great style, that grows stale after a couple of songs. It's not the most interesting experience, just a chore to listen to.

За вторую часть, которая сбалансировала сей альбом, накидываю баллов

Jeg hyggede mig med det her. Ret fint med lidt live lyd. Nok ikke dét album jeg først vender tilbage til igen.

An odd choice for a Neil Young record on this list. I mean I would have to think that he's got another one or two on here for sure. I wonder why this one was chosen? It's a good album but as far as essential Neil Young I don't know if I would count this record. Maybe that's just me. I feel like you either really like Neil Young or you hate him. I like him, super unique voice for sure and I always appreciate that. He's good at crafting a song and a wonderful guitar player. For this particular album, I feel like it starts off great with My My Hey Hey and then kind of just goes down after that. It's too much of the softer kind of singer/songwriter Neil Young and less of the harder rockier version and I much prefer the latter. A decent album though, 3.5/5 rounded to 3 because, come on, a live album with studio overdubs like this isn't exactly a live album.

Pretty good

Great storytelling, interesting music.

I've never felt compelled to explore Neil Young's music because everything I've heard seemed mediocre. 'Rust Never Sleeps' didn't change my opinion. While not bad, it's unremarkable and makes good background music for social events.

2 classic songs and few not so good

This is Neil Young's tenth album, and his third with the band Crazy Horse. Some of the songs on this album were recorded live, during which Young experimented with effects on his guitar parts. For the effects, this album is credited with inspiring some grunge band. These songs are typical of Young's music - guitar based country/folk/rock.

Didn't listen to this album, but after seeing the albums that have been removed from this list I am making one final rating to say this list is dog shit.

couple okay grooves. album is a great soundtrack to a Sunday afternoon dive bar.

Not a huge fan of Neil Young, but I think I might like him most with Crazy Horse? Not sure who this horse is but I like how it brings a little more rock outta Neil. Also happy to see that Mr. Young is back on Spotify after that losing tiff with Rogan. Will be super handy as I think he appears on this list 10+ times.

Simple and similar-sounding melodies, very folksy-Americana sound. Gets a little more energetic near the end. It's not music that'll amp you up, but the gentle storytelling will transport you to a specific moment in time & place. Pretty indifferent to this as a whole, though.

Definitely my favorite Neil Young so far. Haven’t been the biggest fan on past ones but thought this one was fun. Rating: 3.5

That’s another one from Mr. Young!

It was pretty nice, but a little all over the place. I like his voice i dont know what people are on tbh

Somewhat repetitive. Lyrical somewhat basic. A few shining moments

I am not a huge Neil Young fan but this is a solid album.

neil young has a lot of albums on this list! rust never sleeps, however, sounds different. there's still a lot the same: young has his harmonica often and he has his mix of country folk rock. it is a sort of live album, though you can sometimes forget because the album doesn't focus on the cheers or audience participation. a sort of proto-grunge is present, which is endlessly fascinating considering he isn't remembered for that. the main song acting as bookends was a nice touch, with similar lyrics and titles but the main difference being between acoustic and electric styles. i always am a sucker for album titles being hidden in songs, but there was something about that lyric of "it's better to burn out 'cause rust never sleeps."

Enjoyed it

for my first listen, it has not done much to impress me. I know how much of a high standard people hold Neil Young to, but I'm just not getting it. Some nice country songs for sure, but country has never been a favorite genre of mine

casi no lo termino 5/10

Hmmmm, this started out well and I was enjoying it. Then I went back to it and I was bored and skipping songs. I don’t know if it’s mood that really dictates how I feel about Neil Young music regardless I think I’m gonna have to go rather than four, but I will invest more time over time.

FUCK NEIL YOUNG My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue) – 4.5 Thrasher – 3.5 Ride My Llama – 3 Pocahontas – 3.5 Sail Away – 3.5 Powderfinger – 4 Welfare Mothers – 3 Sedan Delivery – 3 Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) – 4 Average - 3.55 (3)

Bueno.

I liked the electric side better

Думал с первых треков, что сейчас как the cure меня шарахнет. Но нет, не пронимает. Ну типа есть что-то интересное, но при этом как-то мееех )

It's okay. Nothing special. Obviously, the bookend songs are the highlights here, but the rest... Meh.. Lyrics are interesting enough, but the music is not really, but I understand why they call him the godfather of grunge.

his voice is especially whiny in this one!

This album's split in two by a folk side and a rock side, can't believe they stole from Hardy with his genre defining classic the mockingbird & THE CROW, it's really disappointing. In a general sense, I think it's fine. I'm not the biggest folk fan so that half didn't really do much for me, but overall it felt fine.

I like Neil Young a lot. This album is fine but not one I keep going back to.

Never listened to a full Neil Young album. Was good, although nothing particularly remarkable

He can write a riff sometimes, and he can write lyrics sometimes, but I am increasingly of the opinion that he can't do both in the same song unless the planets align. I don't get it.

The first side of this album is the one classic Neil Young thing I haven’t been able to get into. Just something very dull and lifeless about that doesn’t capture the sentimental charm that Young does so well. The second side picks up the slackt though, making the experience as a whole better, although I’d rather listen to Neil’s other albums than sit through the first side of this to get to the second one.

6/10 słaba realizacja dźwiękowa. Neil bardzo spokojny.

This was a good Neil Young album, I enjoyed it Top tracks: Powderfinger, Welfare Mothers

Opens with a live version of My My, Hey Hey. Really pretty amplified acoustic tone with solid vocals from Young (always wondered how those would hold up live). Sail Away is a really pretty song. Love the melody and calm atmosphere. Feels like something made for riding a covered wagon cross-country. Was not expecting the change up in tone across Welfare Mothers and Sedan Delivery. The latter digs into an almost eruo-punk inspired riff with some spacey elements. I was into it. Album closes on a considerably darker version of My My, Hey Hey. Definitely prefer the first, but it is interesting how different the heavy riffs make this song. All around this was an enjoyable listen and well fit for a rainy Monday morning such as this. I don't know I'll be back quickly, but it was fine. Objectively, I can see this scoring highly -- personally it runs middle of pack for my tastes. 3 leaning 3.5.

Per ora è da 3

The music's ok, more folk/country than rock. Neil's singing is mediocre at best. It's sometimes even irritating for my ears.

Oh boy, yet another Neil Young record. I hope it's the last one on this list because he's generally insufferable with his 'earnestly howling lonely hound' act with trite songs about teepees. As I mentioned before, it's the auditory sensation of a full body wax job. Allowing a '3' since there were a couple of actually fun rock songs.

Good vocal. Nice style changes.

Coffee, mushrooms, red wine and Neil Young are amongst the many things that the younger me would have rejected and the older me enjoys beyond reason. Great varied album.

TIL at "it's better to burn out than fade away" kommer fra en Neil Young sang??

I listened to this a few days ago, and cannot for the life of me remember anything about this. I think I originally wanted to give this 4 stars, but I'm gonna put it at 3 now (because I do remember not hating it and I've listened to a lot of worse stuff).

Some bias here, Neil Young has talent, but his contributions always felt a bit "Yeah, but watch what I do." and that puts some strain on what it takes to be a fan of his music. Where many artists define themselves either through their band or by their music, this reviewer has had to sift through more rumor, opinion, good and bad, about the man rather than his actual music. The byproduct of that is that it impacts the way the music is heard/listened to. Is the listener hearing Neil Young's creative contributions or are they listening to the "most selfish" or self-aggrandizing musician ever to join Crosby, Stills & Nash? Either way, this album is par for the course. What value does it provide to be heard before one dies? Not much, really, unless the argument is the reason. Neil Young was at his best, even if at his worst, with Crosby, Stills, & Nash. He may feel as though he has earned the right to be more important than he is, and fans can hold that against him, but objectively speaking he is not that big of a deal. Whatever part he had to play in contributing to the difficulty of his groups to come together harmoniously, those problems were likely there before he was. That having been said, this album is par for a course, and not a prestigious course.

I enjoyed this.

I have immense respect for Neil Young as an artist. I do not enjoy Neil Young’s singing.

It's neil young. 3/5
