Reviews (page 8 of 13)

Just two songs

I like how the instruments got more and more feedback and "rusty" over the album

I enjoy Neil Young when he's rocking out, not so much when he's singing sad folk-esque rock. We all know his vocals are basically shit, and in the two albums I've already reviewed on this site, I've felt like his lyrics weren't anything special either. What I do love is when he lets loose on guitar in songs like "Cinnamon Girl". There was none of that on this album, just acoustic guitars and harmonicas. It wasn't terrible but it really has me asking with at least two Neil Young albums already under my belt (and I'm not even at the halfway point) and surely some CSNY headed my way, why on earth do we also need to listen to this album as one of the elite 1001 to hear before we die. We don't. 2.5 stars for me.

Pretty good, pretty classic. Won't go wrong by putting it on.

#1 I can see how Neil’s voice may annoy people, and I agree that I would not want to listen to his music for much longer than this record, but overall it’s still a decent album with a couple of good songs. The instrumental parts are sometimes fantastic, much better than the singing, to be honest. A decent 3, maybe slightly leaning towards the stronger side of 3.

This one was sort of just there. No major standouts, no real reason to get excited or mark it down for future listens. I love Neil Young's voice and all...just kind of underwhelming.

First songs where it’s acoustic are mellow and fun, but the rest of the album was horrible once he had electric instruments.

Man’s a legend. This album… bit of a snoozer. 2 & 1/2. We’ll round it up to 3 out of respect for overall output

my my hey hey

Well, it's Neil Young, so that makes it a zero star, but it is Rust Never Sleeps so I'll give it 3.

5/10 - Favorite song: Powderfinger

I'm not as much of a fan as this album as other people, but it was decent enough. I definitely prefer the first half over the second. Neil Young's voice shines with a folk backing. 3.25/5

Quite good, reminds me of country. Harmonica might be a little too much for me, but folk rock is a genre that is to be appreciated.

Classic but not something I would choose to listen to.

Left me wanting more Good songwriting and lyricism but tends to be repetitive Many songs didn’t catch my ear

Haft svinsvårt med denna. Första låten, my my hey hey är svinbra. Fan. Hade högre förhoppningar.

this album kept me on my toes. this was my first impression of neil young and at first i thought he had a bob dylan type sound but then it started getting more rocky? and then at the end it had pink floyd vibes lol

Pretty nice Neil Young album, if with a bit of filler. The guitar tone on the 'alternative' version of My My, Hey Hey was a pretty cool surprise. Faves: My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), Sail Away, My My, Hey Hey (Into the Black)

Geht so.

It was fine, but nothing really incredible.

The first and last song were the best. It sounds like a Neil Young album.

Neil Young and Crazy Voice (& Crazy Horse) is always interesting, not always great, and that was this album in a nutshell.

A solid album and great to listen to again. Not one I will come back to soon (barring a few tracks) but I do enjoy a bit of Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

3/5 - Not a fan of the first slower and sadder half just out of personal taste, second half was pretty good though. Maybe not much I'd listen to actively but definitely interesting.

Standout Track: My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue) Driving from Big Bend back to Midland at sunset.

I know i enjoyed it, but not real memorable

- Right off the bat, it's definitely something I wouldn't listen to per se, but I like what I'm hearing, just finished the opening track which i quite enjoyed. - Very soft, mellow country/folk vibe, never been a big fan of country but this isn't too bad. - Harmonica - Lots of Native American imagery -Sedan delivery is pretty good -I like the fuzzy guitar sound in the closing track -My final thoughts, I thought it was just kinda alright, I thought the beginning and the end of the album was pretty good, but I didn't really find what was in between that very interesting to me. Not a bad album by any means just not my thing, 5.8/10.

Heard of Neil young but never heard of the album. My my hey hey is pretty good. Well written, good guitar riff. Good song writing in thrasher, music is nothing special. I like ride my llama more. Good guitar. Pocahontas is fine. Well written again. Not much uniqueness so far. Sail away is pretty good. Cool harmonies I guess. Harmonica/guitar solo is really good. A lot of layers of music that work really well together. Woah powderfinger is different. I like what’s going on here. Good first and background vocals give this a good sound. Good guitar solo in the back half. I like welfare mothers too. The electric guitar is much needed. Good songwriting as is the theme through out. Sedan delivery is fun too. Nothing really special but fun song. Electric hey hey my my is so much better. The first half acoustic back half electric is really cool and adds points for creativity. Good not great album. 3 stars.

Definitely liking the folk rock sound on the first half of the album. It gets a little “samey” on the first side but it’s a coherent sound through all the songs. Never realized that Neil Young was a precursor to grunge like this. Back half of this album has some harder rock songs and definitely hear how this was influential to grunge. Sedan Delivery particularly. The hard rock version of Hey Hey My My too has that sound. Interesting stuff. Not sure it’s something that would hit my rotation but overall some really good folk rock songs and rock and an album with two distinct sides of the album. Probably a solid 3/5, 7/10 type of album.

Good, not amazing

really nice album, i like how it starts with a couple of ballads/acoustic versions and ends with really powerful songs. nice blend of rock and a little country/folk

Good album, some weak moments.

Day733 - it’s start with one of neil young’s best songs but it’s mostly down hill from there.

Classic rock, nice record.

Listened to most of this album while walking bishop. Cold, foggy day and I felt like it fit the vibe. Easy listening, would listen again

Down the middle

Pretty good Neil. Pocahontas is so bad though.

yeah it was ok

Trevligt!

Not my style and I didn't like how he talked about women. I appreciated him talking about the native american genocide tho.

3 stars This is my third Neil Young album and I have a feeling there are many more to go. But it’s also the second album I’m already familiar with and I only really know about 3 of his albums so I haven’t gotten too much out of familiar territory. I first picked up this on vinyl during the period when NY wasn’t on Spotify. I heard “My My Hey Hey” on the radio and was taken with it. I had only really listened to Gold Rush and Harvest era Neil Young so it was interesting to me. The acoustic vs electric works for the album, and knowing why there are subtle audience sounds makes sense, but it is a bit weird. The acoustic stuff works but drags a little and Young’s voice can take a toll. Electric side has its moments but also doesn’t feel fully fleshed out. In the end listening this time I enjoyed it more than I remembered but don’t see this as an album the masses must listen to before they die, but could still be considered (possibly) a highlight of Neil Young albums.

Good album.

My my, hey hey… can’t believe I have never really listened to that song. The harmonica always gets me riled up. Rest of the album was alright tbh. Definitely will listen again :)

Good Album but wouldn't listen to it again. No hate towards Neil young but it's just not really my vibe

Great album, felt familiar, but obviously just stuff I normally do. I didn't feel the spark of change but gorgeous harmonica

That there's an acoustic half and an electric half makes this Neil's most *musically* interesting album we've had for sure, but ultimately the meat of his songs is in the stories told, and that side still fails to make much of an impression on me. To its credit the songwriting is undeniably good, and this is the first time I feel somewhat positively towards Neil Young's music. Standouts: My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue) • Pocahontas • Powderfinger

I love Neil but this one was kind of a miss for me (2.5)

I've always thought the Crazy Horse unit lifts Youngs output and this is a good example. A bit Dylanesque having a half acoustic/half electric album keeps thing interesting with some well crafted songs. Hey Hey My My (Into The Black) is a dark comment on the 'industry' even back in '79

A few good folk rock sort of songs, saved to the grab bag.

It's not my typical genre so I think I would enjoy it more after more listens. But really good stuff

Two good songs, rest is avarage.

Funny enough, the lyrics 'It's better to burn out than to fade away' kind of match the tone of this album. A combination of legendary songs + performances, mixed with strong subtlety. With that said, practically every track, regardless of monotony, has some high quality wordsmithin'. Hate even saying that because I put Neil in the songwriting legend category.

Really easy listen

Some good moments, can’t say I could ever really get into it though. Liked both my my hey hey tracks.

Hurk.

Yeah, not bad if you like Neil Young…

Decent listen

I like this album. It has a very warm feeling too it, like a cozy winter fire or like a cup of coffee in the morning while your camping yk.

Segjum 2,8.

First song was ok. Thrasher is fun, the rambling and telling on lowkey reminds me of a Taylor Bridge where she just can't stop rambling. I like the guitar. Next four songs, kinda boring, sorry. Welfare Mother's has something about it. I thinks it's the E guitar. The second version of Hey Hey, My My is more to my liking.

3.3 2x

"Sir what are you going to name yourself?" "Neil Young because I'm young." "What about later when you're older? You can't stay young forever." "Watch me!" Look at you now idiot

Didn’t love this one outside of Hey Hey, My My

weird pocahontas lines but overall an enjoyable listen for sure <3

The harmonica slaps.

As a background

Dad would LOVE this

Solid folk vibe, better songs of his on other albums

Great album, although it made me very melancholic for some reason?

Love me some harmonica Fave track: Pocahontas

Couldn’t help but enjoy this quite a bit. 3.5/5

The guitar is my favorite part, really bringing every song together into a cohesive sound. The lyrics are sometimes beautiful and sometimes silly and sometimes poignant. I loved hearing “out of the blue and into the black” and realizing where Lana got her inspiration from. Welfare Mothers goes hard and I think it’s my favorite.

Could be better idk

3/5 + I like the structure and composition of the album + Great guitar tone + Really dig the live vibe + Im a sucker for harmonica solos - Sometimes Young's voice just doesnt click with me - Not really packed with highlights Fav: My, My, Hey, Hey (Out of The Blue), Powderfinger Least Fav: Sedan Delivery, Sail Away

Solid Neil Young album carried pretty heavily by the incredible My My, Hey Hey. Favorites: My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), Sail Away

Enjoyed it but wasn’t my fave

3.0 - Ok

I was so excited to see this come through on a rainy Friday morning. I just listened while I did my am journaling with a coffee. This album is so strong, it's more like a cozy friend than anything. Standout songs: Obviously My, My, Hey, Hey and Powderfinger I haven't marked anything a 5 star yet because I feel like I need to save that.

It's well-written music. I'm just not crazy on Neil Young.

Oh yay, more Neil Young. This time live. I think.

Cool stuff.

maybe I'm just craving something that sounds new. half-listened. it was okay

My my hey hey is an absolutely amazing song, the rest was pretty good but maybe not re listening quality

5/5 for the intro and outro. Struggle to give the rest of it higher than a 2.5 due to the whiny nature of Mr Youngs voice that seems to get more grating with each song.

Pretty good, could see it growing on me. A bit one note at times but appreciate the straightforward energy of it.

Neil Young is the soul and conscience of American (and Canadian) music and culture. A troubadour of rock and folk, akin to Springsteen and Dylan, but even more gritty and raw. Unflinching stories and commentary of contemporary events and emotions. A national treasure, it'll be a sad day when we lose him. It's easy to compare this to 1989's Freedom which follows a similar format with several live or live-sounding tracks, but also features stronger, more impactful stories and arrangements. Both are epic efforts, but Freedom might be slightly better even if it does have more of a slicker, professional production.

Neil Young is good but i don’t think he’s as great as this list thinks he is. never a bad listen but feel like we could’ve given up a couple of his albums for other artists

couple a eddies and this album will get you and the boys straight

The first/last song is great; 'Thrasher' and 'Sedan Delivery' are strong too. The middle sounds very Neil-Young-y. Like, almost a parody. There are other Neil albums I would have put on the 1001 list instead of this one, but man that last track is just a cold, haunting, brutal masterpiece. He also made another version of ‘Hey Hey, My My’ together with Devo; gotta say I enjoyed that too.

I enjoyed this! Not my favorite Neil Young from the list, but there were some great tunes. 3.5 stars.

There were parts of this album that were way too folksy, but then there were others that really felt more my style in that early form grunge/garage rock. Best: Sedan Delivery Worst: Ride My Llama

O riff de Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black) é insano de bom.

Hey hey my my

There’s some really great lyrics on this one with a lot of very important social issues to this day.

Young is one of those guys who I admire as an artist, activist, and person, but don't really love his music. He's an extremely talented songwriter, but as with a lot of folky-folk stuff, I got bored. It has some high moments, especially the diptych of the first and last tracks, but it's not enough to sustain my attention throughout.

Crazy Horse is such a banger artist name. This is ok.

Another solid record by Young. I just am never in love with his stuff even though I reconfigure the greatness of the lyrics and music. Don’t know why that is. 3.5/5

this album makes me feel like i lost my horse

Hard to go wrong here.

It was ok. Of course the hit is a classic. Also liked the Llama one, Pocahontas, and Welfare Moms a distant third.

Neil Young doing punk rock? An even bigger surprise is that it's actually pretty good. Now I've seen everything. Best songs: ¨Hey Hey, My My,¨ ¨Sedan Delivery¨

Yes, i like it

Pretty good album - and good songwriting. I liked the continuity between the opener and closer I think it didn’t really speak to me perhaps as much as other Neil Young albums

Neil Young doing Neil Young things. Solid. The man is a damn folk rock n roll shaman. I love the different sounds he makes with Crazy Horse.

I thought the first five tracks had a more folksy sound to the songs where the last four tracks were more hardcore rock and roll with electric guitar riffs. Before listening to this album, I was ambivalent about Neil Young's work; however, I did like "Pocahontas" a lot.

peak dad rock

enjoyed this, but a live album is a weird way to experience these songs

Good background listening. Nothing too splashy. Glad I gave it a rip.

The 17 year old was intrigued enough about “Thrasher” to ask who the singer was. That was one of my favorites on the album too. Overall, a little uneven.

Some songs as sharp as steel. Some weak as rust.

Listenable.

It’s fine

A bit mid of an album. Makes me sleepy, wanna get high or needin’ a nap, real bad.

- (quote discovered and taken from someone else's review:) "You go to a supermarket, and you see a faggot behind the fuckin’ cash register; you don’t want him to handle your potatoes.” - Neil Young. Yeah, you can F off Neil Young. - I'd never heard this album, but it feels nostalgic. - Solid melodies and lyrics. - Definitely feels more live than produced - I'd prefer more studio than live. - Dislike Welfare Mothers and Sedan Delivery.

pretty good actually although i dont always love NY

Soft folk/country rock. Quite nice really. Lyrical themes of American indigenous peoples. 2nd half is much more rock styled. Prefer the 1st half. Best track - Pocahontas 3 stars, but had potential

3.5 round down.

He’s so good

This was better than the last Neil Young album. This is like rock and country mixing. His voice still frustrates me, but it seemed to fit better here. Liked Songs: "My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)" , "Thrasher" , "Pocahontas" , "Sail Away" , "Welfare Mothers" , "Sedan Delivery" , "Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)"

Good variety for a short album 3

Not my usual cup of tea. Its got that old school Beatles kind of feeling that I like. Though it gets a bit boring at times, it's still a pleasant listening experience. I liket it, and even added a song from there to my playlist - therefore it gets a 3/5🎉

not my usual kind of music, not a bad album though.

Very relaxing. Beautiful voice on him.

Some beauty here. Some tragic in love with/shocked by the story he's a part of that I found kind of annoying as I encountered it yesterday, but is also an amazing situator into the moment it was created I guess. Weird echos and shadows that feel seen in it. I was a bit reactive to this yesterday, but it's still a bit on the trite side for me.

It's got a pretty chill vibe, and I could've stood to hear more about his time with Pocahantas. But I don't know if it has a lot of replayability for me.

The least annoying Neil Young album I've listened to. Still, not my bag at all.

Instrumentation is pretty good, but I can't get into the vocals

Fine! Neil Young is such a classic. Not something I’d reach for but listenable.

Aboslute Classic. Don't know if I have actualy listened in its entiriety

Better than the first Neil Young album I heard from this list, but the cool parts aren't consistent

Would've been 4 stars but near the end I could only hear Adam sandlers singing voice and it took me out of it.

Good songs good. Welfare mothers was the nader.

- Oké, zeker niet slecht. - 0 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM

I didn’t love this but it wasnt awful. Weird one

3 - good album

Beautiful clarity; not for me.

Interesting songs, with “My My, Hey Hey” being the best and most familiar. Some of the recordings started with live cuts, and I sometimes found the sound/audience noise to be a distraction.

Good live music, not a huge Neil young fan, but I can appreciate the talent. 3.3

Decent enough - didn’t really grab me

pretty meh vocalistically, didnt really pay much attention to the poetry of it but I caught glimpses of a poetic tendency (lame ass way of not describing precisely what I heard but capturing some vague feeling of it) starting with the pocahontas song. liked the distorted guitar of the first and last song and how they were kind of light and dark versions of each other. that was pretty cool. my my hey hey, hey hey my my. rust never sleeps is a cool title. its always creeping up on you, ready to take over unfeelingly.

Not a drive to work jam

I had no idea “It’s better to burn out than to fade away” came from this album. That alone gave it a certain weight going in. I also didn’t realize how fully Neil Young leaned into that off-key, straining wail post-Harvest, and wow, does he commit. 😅 It’s a bit all over the show, but I appreciated the raw edges and the clear roots of grunge planted throughout. A bit messy but undeniably influential.

Starts off very strong. Based off my limited knowledge of him, this feels like the quintessential Neil Young album. Might grow on me.

It's fine. I'm sure fans of Neil Young love it. Gave it a 4 last time but for some reason this time didn't grab me as much.

I understand the why and wherefore, but not my favorite Neil Young Album

idk man dude is kinda whiny

One of Neil Young's best, right? What more can be said?

Killer opener and closer, tracks in the middle are a mixed bag (leaning positive) - unfortunately I just don't like the structure of this and I can't see it higher than a 3, though it is absolutely the best Neil Young this challenge has offered (not that that is a big win!)

The first album this site ever served me was 1990’s Ragged Glory, and it was nearly unlistenable. This album, however, was pretty dang good! Much closer to the Neil Young I enjoy, and a ton of really fun songs on the record. Best Track: My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)

Solid lyrical country music. The beginning of the album is measured, played on a couple of chords and creates the atmosphere that you are sitting in a half-empty pub or taking a minibus to another city. The second half of the album is already with more cheerful motives, apparently so that the listener doesn't get bored completely. I can't recommend it, it didn't catch on, but it wasn't bad either.

Solid listen. Not anything groundbreaking

Relaxed album, zonder echte uitblinkers.

It was pretty decent. Not something I’d search back out though

My My Hey Hey ist gut, ansonsten maximal durchschnittlich.

Fand Teile echt gut. Das erste Lied ist wunderschön. Der zweite Teil war weniger gut.

Not bad

neil young is pretty good

Some interesting lyrics but parts didn’t age well. I enjoy the overall sound of the album but Neil Young’s voice is annoying.

Pretty lukewarm on this one. It's a soft 3.

Think I like the acoustic side more than the electric. But it’s all good. Classic Neil. Closer to a 3.5 or 3.75

Was a good album, but overall didn't enjoy all of the songs.

Not my favorite Neil Young album. I think Harvest is a much better album.

It was cute. Nothing really notable but it was a pleasant listen

I’ve always wanted to like Neil Young. I’ve got a lot of respect for him but I’ve never really liked listening to his albums past one spin and the wondering why I gave it another try only to try again years later. I also can't help but thinking of that old Dana Carvey bit where he goes "this is every Neil Young song you've ever heard" and then proceeds to do a spot on imitation of every Neil Young song you've ever heard. I was going to give this a 4 based on the respect I have for him but I just can't get into this album until the last 3 songs.

Nice melodies and good background music, but nothing crazy.

Not my favourite but a decent album. Might need a closer listen.

Really cool! Very heavy guitar stuff from Neil Young. My My is a classic, obviously, but I hadn't heard the ret of this record before. Surprisingly fun!

Pas mal aber lowkey klingt jedes Lied gleich 6/10?

either something to cry over or to have a slow dance with either way love it

pretty good if you dont care about the lyrics

Singer's voice sounds like Placebo. Lots of acoustic guitar, not a fan. Powderfinger kinda slaps. Second half of the album is actually rock songs, so much better than the first.

I'm a Neil Young fan, but this live album just falls flat for me. 3/5 #151

I can't believe two albums from this combo made it on this list. This one is better than the other, at least.

This was my second Neil Young album so far, and this one was so much better than Tonight's the Night. I could actually see listening to this one again if the right mood struck.

Having now finally listened to all 9 albums featuring Neil Young in this challenge, I remain deepy confused about what I think of him. I've rated his albums between 5 stars and 2 stars. The prospect of getting a live album by him definitely filled me with some slight dread. Most of his album struck me as among his more boring material, if I'm being honest. Ok, I get that there was some controversy around the central concept: "It's better to burn out than fade away". Multiple other artists weighed in and Kurt Cobain quoted it in his suicide note. So yeah, that's pretty heavy. But what else do we get aside from one extreme lyric. Most of the songs were fairly forgettable. But... I absolutely love both parts of the album's bookends, "Hey Hey, My My". Both songs work incredibly well on their own and compliment one another perfectly. Neil Young was said to have had a big influence on grunge music, but I never heard anything other than an aging folk singer trying to cash in a teenage trend. But there's definitely a real grunge intensity to that closing track. But once again, I just don't know how to rate it. On the power of that great two part song, I'm tempted to go up to 4 stars, knowing that I might one day come to appreciate the rest of the album. But if I'm being honest, two great songs among some filler is only 3 stars. Apologies to Neil Young fans, but he's just got a very mixed track record for me. When he's great, he's great, but I don't love it all the same.

This is a fairly easy going album, it gently rises and peaks towards the end. It’s good but not great.

Not a big Neil Young fan tbh but was better than I expected

Wouldn't buy

Neil Young is always a good listen and I never knew there were 2 versions of my, my, hey, hey (or hey, hey, my, my).

Not bad, but also not very exiting. I’m also not sure what to think of Neil Young’s voice.

This is #day358 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… it's been 3 or 4 days since I last got a Neil Young & Crazy Horse album. While I rated that one a 2, I thought I couldn't follow suit with this record, at least because there's "My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)," which I like. So be it. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day359.

Cool country vibes. Will deffo listen again

Oh how I wish I was born during the great harmonica boom of the 70s and 80s Starts as great folk rock but becomes meh rock towards the end and it’s a bit repetitive, Neil young also says some crazy shit unprompted on this album

Kindof a weird album. I enjoyed it but some of the lyrics and themes are questionable. Good sound weird context.

Very chill listen, but nothing really caught my attention very strongly

One known song from this album, it’s experimental as usual. Some great harmonica passages. Nothing terrible but nothing notable.

Jammer

It's okay. Great storytelling and the instrumentals are great in parts.

Not my favourite Neil my a long stretch but still a great Neil. Probably rounded down a bit.

Neil Young just ain't the most interesting artist for me, last half was good though for sure

I feel this deserves to be better but it ends up being repetitive and for what is not that long of an album feeling long. But the music is enjoyable in spots.

I really like Neil Young’s voice. It was a pleasant listen. I only knew My My Hey Hey.

In another world I may have liked Neil Young and this album. It's a bit weak in the middle, but overall it's a pretty solid piece of music. One that I listened to everyday for years, as it was the tape in my buddies car, and he either didn't want to change it or couldn't so everywhere we went it was to the soundtrack of this album.

Range of 70s styles from acoustic, rock to punk. Excellent audio mix. Great intro and outro to classic live album.

Contains some of Neil Young's best-written and most lyrically rich songs, such as "Pocahontas" and "Powderfinger". I just wish this weren't a live album that was overdubbed. Tracks like "Thrasher" have that ugly acoustic-electric guitar sound that just takes me out of it. The first half which is basically all acoustic, could have been better with more polished studio work. The second half is more raw and electric, but the recording quality is still flawed, a little flat. The album progresses in chaos from the gentle acoustic version of "Hey Hey My My (Out of the Blue)" to the absurdly gritty version "(Into the Black)", which is interesting. I understand the raw and improvisational sound throughout is probably what was intended, but I just can't help but wonder how much better some songs could have been as studio recordings.

Great voice and good guitar playing. No one song really pulled me in though.

hm...My My, Hey Hey...mesmo assim, chataaato bgr 3 estrelas pro neil young

Started off really enjoyable, I love Neil's voice. Did go a bit odd towards the end though, is that just me?

Solid opener with a song that i only know from being a staple of Oasis’s setlist. For a fairly short album theres more variety in terms of style than the previous Neil Young albums i’d listened to, presumably in part due to the live aspect but this still works as a cohesive album. Not sure of the necessity to close the album with a different version of hey hey though, especially given it is not as good

Not the best work by Neil Young, but okay.

Standard NY. I don't mind his voice for a couple of tracks but it's a bit whiney for a whole album.

Not so bad for a Neil Young's album, but this is, ridiculously, the sixth on the list (I've probably missed some bands he was in). Are we sure this isn't just a list of 1,001 albums featuring Neil Young?

Fav: Powderfinger Least Fav: Ride My Llama Even though my fav song is on the grungier b-side and my least fav song is on the folk rock a-side, I’m surprised by my preference towards side A

Middle of the road, don't understand how Neil Young has so many damn albums on here

Nostalgic! It’s better to burn out then fade away! Still not my favorite.

Not the first to say Young’s voice kinda sucks, but there’s plenty of great writing and instrumental talent on this album.

Meh- couple of good tunes but overall doesn't really do it for me. I prefer some of the other live albums.

I enjoyed listening to this I can hear the influence he had on bands I like. Some lyrics were a bit crazy but I’m gonna smile and ignore for this review 3.5??

surprisingly good

More rock than I thought. Not as catchy as I like it, but a good rock album overall.

Cover 5 The songs aren't horrible but too hippie-ish for me. Some cheese lyrics. Some of it is cringey although with good intentions I'm sure.

Mellow and pleasant yet wistful and angry. That's Neil Young for you, in general. Some of the album is partly live and some of it's partly country. It's also famously an early precursor to grunge. In 1979, this album does stand more with the recently-emerged punks than it does with the highly-ornamented, drug-soaked industry of what rock & roll had become at the time. It's meaningful that the record is so country-tinged, stripped down and borderline lackadaisical. Is it a required listen, though? It's probably worth a listen but, even as Neil Young albums go, this isn't as good as Harvest. The thing about having a list that's 1001 albums long is that it's going to be largely padding. This is pretty good padding, but make no mistake: you're here to hear "My My, Hey Hey" and "Hey Hey, My My" and those bookend the album (due respect to Powderfinger).

Good ol’ Neil. He’s just having a Crazy Horse time.

I can tolerate Neil Young as a singer but I feel like he would be so fucking annoying if he was nagging me about something with that voice

This is my first solo Neil Young album. I’ve not consciously listened to Neil Young before. My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) - I had no idea that the Chromatics track Into The Black wasn’t an original. I quite like this version too, very different of course. Great lyrics and central chord progression. Into the Black was a nice followup to this and closer for the album. Thrasher - quite liked the instrumentals and songwriting on this. This album is a bit of a fairybread sandwich, I liked the bread more than the filling. Not great, not terrible. Highlights: My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue), Thrasher, My My Hey Hey (Into The Black)

Two very different sides, I enjoyed Side A far more than Side B. Reading about the album before listening I really thought I would enjoy the more electric side more but Young's lyricism and the acoustic tone of the first half really hits differently than the second half. Powderfinger is an evergreen song but the rest of the tracks on the second half don't hold a candle to a track like Thrasher. Was tempted to give this a 4 because the tracks on the first half are just that good, but on repeat listens I found myself going back to the first track right after Powderfinger ends. Highlights: My, My, Hey, Hey (Out of the Blue), Thrasher, Powderfinger

Best Song: My My, Hey Hey This is fine. I've never particularly been into Neil Young, he's like Canadian Bob Dylan. My My, Hey Hey is a great tune though.

Surprisingly enjoyable. He's found a bit of energy from somewhere

I am not rust, I'm sleepy

I think you would like to hear my review about this album because it think you would like to hear about my opinion, i didnt like the album because the instraments and the lyrics sounded depresing

Everyone tells me I should like you Neil Young and everybody tells you that you should like me but when the time comes and we try spooning on the couch there's just no spark. Sorry, pal.

Preferred this over After the Gold Rush, which I already know is going to be a controversial opinion. Let’s just say I prefer Neil Young doing rock over folk, his voice is less grating for me. I do like his instrumentation more on this album, but I felt it took to long to get to a proper rock ‘n’ roll sound, it was a bit too laidback in the beginning. This is an improvement from the last album of his I listened to but its brought me to the conclusion that I’m not a Neil Young fan.

- neil young up there with john darnielle in terms of great guys who don’t really sing - something truly magical about a harmonica - the guitar is incredibly soulful. things that are nothing to say - the electric guitar on powderfinger was unexpected - huge fan of the bookending songs that’s very cool - something i think i would enjoy much more if it were live - 3 stars but not adding!

is good

Oh maaan. Direkt mitm beste song gstarted. Hypahypa, unf frnn rifach biz boting witer.

my my hey hey riitet de frechdachs eifach sis lama vo peru bis uf texarkana isch das tatsächlich neil young album #5? oder #4? ufjedefall chli zu viel des guten für min gschmack gid trotzdem 3 chritz, weil eigentlich scho noch sweet

It’s ok

Not bad.

Favourite song - Pocahontas. I'd describe this as Cowboy Rock and quite enjoyed it, apart from the distorted sound occasionally. 3 or 4

Classic Neil Young. Pocahontas and My My and Hey Hey stand out. Better to burn out than fade away.

Live album. Folk / Americana. My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) - Great lyrics. 'It's better to burn out than fade away'. This album is obviously poetic with some great lyrics. It's hard for me to identify with though. The great plains of the US and wondering yonder etc is a world away from working class England, endless grey and urbanisation.

It's a chemical mixture of elements, so of course not.

Lots of Neil young in this exercise. I feel like all my reviews are probably the same. This is good and Neil has some great songs, but on my hole, the albums just don’t blow me away. 3.25

2.7 Made the mistake of reading the album blurb before listening? Precursor to grunge? Sign me up. Alas, other than the opening (and closing) track, it just didn't click at all with me. Really nothing that I would put on again. Didn't hate it, but didn't love it. Neil Young appears yet again, but not certain why this time.

second half is weaker, ya know, i said it

Just fine, not something I would find myself relistening to but certainly didn’t mind the listen

Ok for background

I’m not crazy (horse) about this album, but I respect what Young was trying to do with this project. The whole ‘rust’ concept as an allegory for rock music becoming comfortable and complacent is kind of interesting; I give him that. But I’m not in love with a lot of these songs. On to what I do love: Hey Hey, My My, and Powderfinger. All timers in my opinion. The live production is used to incredible effect to bring these songs to life. In particular, the distortion effects from the former give the song this wild and unpredictable energy. The increasing distortion throughout the song feels as if the band is breaking down - dare I say grinding on in spite of the rust. As an average guitarist, these songs also bring me a lot of joy to play. Young doesn’t aim for accuracy here. The mess of distortion and ‘missed’ notes makes for a highly accessible sound for wannabe’s like me to try emulate. So some of these songs resonate strongly with me, but I have to kind of shrug at the bulk of the material. Live Rust on the other hand is a different story, and I’ll be highly disappointed if this one made the list instead.

Nesu fanas. 2.5/5.

I really don't care for Neil Young's voice, country styled rock, or indeed this album, though I may concur with some of the sentiments here. I don't get why this is an album I *must* listen to!

I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Neil's voice definitely takes some getting used to but there are some really pretty songs on this album.

Some bangers. One classic (maybe 2)

Not so good , best song I'd say is Welfare Mothers, but it sounds oddly similar to Tie Your Mother Down of Queen....never been a big fan of Neil Young, but I have been trying to enjoy him more these days so I was pretty happy getting this album, and then I was kind of disappointed. Not horrible by any means of course! Just not my kind of music really..

I pretty much know what to expect from a Neil Young album at this point. It's fairly good, though in general I don't love too much country stuff and don't care for live albums. Touching though

Pretty solid, only a few songs that really stuck with me but its all solid. Easy listen, probably a 3.5

This good stuff. I think I preferred the acoustic parts on first listen, however I may have to give it further goes. Weirdly thrasher just reminds me of a mix of have you ever seen the rain and everybody's talkin', like quite a close rip of in some parts... but I can't seem to find anyone else saying the same online which is unusual. Anyway. Fun album.

Decent

My ancestry.ca kit told me that I carry all of the genetic traits to enjoy this fully but I just cannot fully. May need a shrink

Still not a Neil Young Fan. Finally started to rock a bit in the last few songs and it was over. His voice just doesn’t do it for me.

Bro can't pronounce llama. Some decent highs but some tracks I really just hoped would end

It was a nice listen, but the voice wasn’t my favorite.

Ganz nices easy listening. Und sicher weltbewegend für die zeit. Lyrisch ganz vorn. Aber reißt halt echt nich mit 😅

It's Neil Young, so it's not bad, but it's not overly good either. Nothing really stands out to me apart from the interesting album structure. I can see why this was influential for a lot of folks, but it's not really working for me.

I enjoyed this! Great opening track. Admittedly I fell asleep while listening to this on the train.

Not my favorite. Neil Young is talented, but too jammy for my taste.

Studio is better, but still Neil Young. My My being the only real great.

The end of Neil Young "imperial era". It houses some of Neil's best-written songs, but there are a couple of unremarkable fillers.

Didn't realize this was where where My My, Hey Hey was from. Iconic track. A few solid tracks on here, but about the same number of duds. I did generally enjoy the instrumentation and Neil Young's singing and folk+rock sound.

Middle of the road

It's better to burn out than to fade away. Much like Bob Dylan, I feel Neil Young is an acquired taste. After my initial listen, I found myself tuning out. I have not listened to a lot of Neil Young, so I only know his popular stuff, and what he has done with Crosby Stills and Nash. Still just not feeling Neil Young even after a second listen, I have to hope their are better Neil Young albums on this list. I did enjoy the bookends to this album Hey Hey My My Out of the Blue and Into the Black.

Like the mix of acoustic and electric. “Powderfinger” is the standout song for me. A good album. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again

I really, REALLY do hate harmonica solos of ANY kind... That aside, this was OK. It's not something I'd listen to again, but I do recognize that it has its moments. Back half is stronger than the front.
