Reviews (page 12 of 12)
The whole album doesn't really push the creative boat out. I gotta say off the bat Petty really isn't a strong vocalist. He's got this restrictive tone that really doesn't speak to me. The songwriting is fine but feels so middle of the road americana. The very heights of the album are only decent which doesn't bode well for me listening to any more Tom Petty. Fairly egregious amounts of mid.
I mean it's fine but that's it
not my cuppa
Tom is really great. I never gave him a fair chance when I first heard his music in the 90s. It's still not really my thing, but I have a lot of respect for it.
I forgot it almost as quickly as I listened to it. I did not have the time to rate it right away, and now I'm having hard times saying anything about it. I vaguely remember that some songs were entertaining, some others bored me. Sorry Tom Petty.
Gear: Hifiman Arya Mix: fantastische Details und Ortbarkeit (grenzt an Overkill für diesen beliebigen Rock and Roll) Musik: 🆗 Wertung: 💔💔(💔)/5 (inkl. +1 für "American Girl")

Meh
Meh
has that one song on it
Not a fan of Tom Petty. No denying the greatness of his bangers Breakdown and American Girl. The rest just kinda stinks to me. 10 songs in 30 minutes is just odd too.
I generally like their music, but their sound had not been developed to that stage on most of these songs.
meh, poslusao sam mu i druge pjesme osim ovog, ima tu i tamo neki hit. Sve u svemu 2.5/5
I prefer wildflowers but there are some good bops on this one. Fits great as a self titled as it seems to really encapsulate all of the band's styles well. I don't know if I love it as a whole album experience but a good introduction to the band.
Etwas mau
Completely unoffensive, but just not great. Slow, easy listening. Decent background music. Not at all captivating, exhilarating, or enjoyable. Just... not bad.
The most underwhelming rock record I've ever heard
I listened while driving and found the album wholly underwhelming. In my short time of doing this, I've been able to find a hidden gem (song I enjoy more than the released singles), but this album had no standouts to me. 2/5
Mi favorita strangered in the night 👍
uneventful but cool vocals
Not really my thing. The majority of the album was very disappointing and the high points weren't anything I'd go back for.
Like Elvis Castello, The Rolling Stones and Van Morrison had a threesom and out popped Tom Petty. Rather annoying vocals backed by some very unimpressive instrumentals. Not the worst thing we have listened to but pretty low down on the list. 3/10
duplicate
Too fuckboyish for me. Isn't he like 40 or something?? He definitely looks older than he is I'm just saying grow up dude pussy ain't everything
Finde ich nicht unglaublich ansprechend. Geht mit einfach nicht so ins Ohr. 4.0/10
Definitely not my style. 2.
Like Tom Petty but album was meh.
American girl was a banger but overall didn’t leave a strong impression
Hmm :(
I don't really think Tom Petty is for me. I didn't love the album, but it wasn't terrible. Some fun songs but overall not a favorite.
2 recognizable songs, not really my cup of tea
Solid Tom Petty, but not really my true genre. Mad respect for his contributions to songwriting and marijuana advocacy...
- instrumental not half bad, sort of calm - lyrics and melody nothing to write home about - almost like country, old American bar music - at least the songs are short - his voice is actually pretty annoying - American girl was the best song, at least the most memorable
easy listening, not favorite from them
Aika tylsä kokonaisuus, sopii kyllä tempon puolesta lenkkimusiikiksi. Ei jatkoon.
Eh not me but i get the appeal. Best song: American Girl
Other than American Girl and Breakdown, this album is somewhat generic and boring.
Not really my thing
Oli parempi ku odotin, vähä lattee kuiteski
Not bad, kind of monotonous for me
Okay for background music, nothing really stood out.
downloaded the first song the rest was not really up my alley
Couldn't find the album, played The Greatest Hits.
nothing to excited, but not terrible just not my cup of tea.
I thought most of this was fairly unremarkable rock and roll, with the exception of standout track American Girl.
It's alright. Got a song two here I'd listen to again, but not really a whole lot to have on repeat.
Breakdown Rockin' Around (With You) American Girl Strangered in the Night Luna Fooled Again (I Don't Like It) Hometown Blues Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll The Wild One, Forever Mystery Man A lot of these are just really mid
meh
Just wasn’t my cup of tea.
Nothing to write home about. Just typical 70s rock.
This was quite petty and my heart was broken :(
Theres really not that much to it. Bang average
This started well. The opening track had a spring in its step, but the rocky ballads didn't grab me so much. Looking down the tracks I was willing the player to get to the end, as I know and quite like American Girl as a tune. So the album starts and ends well, it's just the middle bit that wasn't so engaging. I have to say I much prefer Johnny Thunders' Heartbreakers.
This reminds me of Van Morrison in places. It's positioned on the threshold of punk in'76. Tom Petty could never be placed within this scene, but it did influence his future direction. What we have here then is the Like Punk Never Happened version of Tom. It's very twangy. The pace picks up finally with American Girl at the end. The album is short on melodies. A useful starting point, but nothing great.
Generic, mid-tier classic rock. With the exception of "American Girl", this album feels unfinished and forgettable, more like a series of jams than meaningful songs. There's some good music in Tom Petty's catalog, but this ain't it.
2.5
Not a bit TP fan, but I do like a few of his songs. Besides, "Breakdown" and "American Girl" this record is just ok.
American Girl is good, the rest is bland and grating. It’s like if Springsteen was worse in every single way - vocals, songwriting, instrumentation, etc.
Highlights: "Breakdown," "Strangered in the Night," "Luna" The main things that set this apart from where the Eagles were at, and all that that implies, are the vanishing glissando synth accents, splashes of glam like on the opener, shorter average runtimes, and Petty's voice. Petty's voice is beyond parody, an amorphous combination of every word-chewing pseudo-accent ever discovered. To today's listener, it's Adam Sandler, Counting Crows, The Cars, Billy Corgan, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, etc. The songs are well-studied and tight syntheses of Bowie, Springsteen, punk, and pop country, with every space in the mix stuffed with some kind of flair, but in one of the greatest years pop music ever had, this album is beneath notice.
"Breakdown" is one of the ten songs that randomly pop into my head at any moment. It's a standout here, but the rest of the tunes feel like they are trying to be the Rolling Stones trying to be honky tonk heroes.
Is 'American Girl' *that* 'American Girl'? WE SHALL SEE! (I really don't know Tom Petty, at all!) Yes it is. (I'm sure I have heard a cover that's about 10000000 times better than this.) That's about it, really. I can't see myself lying back in bed, knowing I have listened to this album, and feeling ready to die. 2 / 5 stars.
Fine
Nothing outstanding with this record, it's just meh. Nothing stands out, very stock standard basic rock
Nope. This album is really summed up by one of his other hits (not on this album): Free Falling.
Decidedly underwhelming; also, I didn’t realize how much of a Country/Western sound it has.
People keep trying to get me to listen to Tom Petty and it looks like I got fooled again, and I don’t like it. This album is great to listen to while poking a new hole in your belt because I gained a couple pounds. Tom’s got a very unique and distinguishable voice, and it’s always cool to listen to a legend’s first album. It has a cool 70’s vibe as TP and the HBs try to find their sound. HOWEVER, with the exception of a couple bright spots…I’m not a fan. I found most songs super forgettable and didn’t get me excited to be listening. Breakdown, a vibe departure from rest of the album, is my favourite on the record. But by the time we got to the last track, I was ready to mentally breakdown, but thank god American Girl saved the whole record. That tune has been rockin around my head all day, so I’ll give em credit for that one. Who are these HeartBreakers anyways?
Pretty vanilla album, I'm sure if this was the only thing Tom Petty released then this wouldn't make the 1001. Not any real great songs, a lot of filler and songs that just fade out because they seemingly ran out of ideas.
I saw Tom Petty live a decade ago and it was a lot of fun… but this album is pretty meh
his vocals sometimes sound like he's bleeding out on the street but still has an album to record. that gets a little tiring! other than that, fun album!
This album is better played in the background than really listened to. At least it's short. Petty here sounds like he's doing mediocre covers of nonexistent Springsteen b-sides. Not a fan of his voice on this.
I love "Into the Great Wide Open", so clearly I'm more of a fan of their later work than their earlier...
I liked the songs I already liked but was eager for the others to end. Made it through the whole album but won’t revisit.
Could live without this. "I Don't Like It". Only track I sort of liked was American Girl.
As other's have said this is a rather by the numbers rock album with two pretty good songs at either end. It certainly won't thrill you, but it won't irritate either. Just listen to American Girls or Rockin' Around, unless you're having a chill BBQ the rest isn't worth it.
Tom petty e så ass bro
Fairly boring standard blues/rock album. A couple of songs stand out from the humdrum but this is not great.
Grand
Besides the hits, this music just didn't hit with me. Ok, just not my thing today
Kinda underwhelmed with this one. Also a candidate for one of the worst album covers ever. Two broken hearts.. I guess... 💔💔
Soft rock ei kyllä oo mun juttu. American girlistä +1…
This album is a lot softer than I expected, if I'm being honest. A lot of the guitar riffs were pretty unique. I don't have much else to say about it either though. Very general rock, and it's good but not something I would look back on. Fave track(s): Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll
BANG AVERAGE.
This album is ok. It feels like pretty basic dad rock, and I'm not a huge fan of Tom Petty's voice. Good background music for a party I guess. Favorite song: The Wild One, Forever Worst song: Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)
Only knew some of his later work and that was much more sophisticated and less standard than this album, so no real find for me
Since I grew up listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's hits, I was pretty excited to hear their debut album. But, really the only memorable songs on here were the hits. The thing about Tom Petty is that his greatest hits rival most artists's best albums, but I can't think of a single Tom Petty album that I love from start to finish. There are some great ones, Wildflowers being my favorite, but every album seems to have just a few good songs. Don't get me wrong, he's a prolific musician, but this debut was pretty blah. 2.5 solely for Breakdown and American Girl, two of my all-time favorite classic rock songs.
Glimpses of good, but sort of music you'd expect from a boyband for most of it and country influenced.
I can't remember literally anything about this, an md I just listened
non mi è piaciuto, ripetitivo e troppo scontato
One of those mid 70s guys who was neither here nor there. There are a few spots where he lays down some decent guitar but there isn't much here to get excited abou
I found the first song interesting with its blend of punky-1976-guitar and quasi call-and-response vocals on the chorus. The second song, "Breakdown" was a nice contrast. Amongst the rest there are a fair number of clichéd predictable rockers, which make me feel sad for the American music scene at the time that punk was about to explode in the UK.
How many of you think that he sounds just like Patti Smith when he's singing Breakdown? Anyways, I think that's the best song on the album. The rest of the songs aren't terribly exciting nor terrible either so he gets a lukewarm rating from me.
having never heard a tom petty song(or at least recognized a song), and coming at this album from the current year, it's.. generic. It mightn't have been for its time, but now, very generic.
Luna was ok. So was fooled again. American girl is good. Breakdown is by far the best song on the album. Doesn’t do much to fight the negative stereotypes of dad rock 4/10
OK, nothing fantastic, but OK.
It’s definitely a tom petty album
what’s the difference between a low end prostitute and tom petty? at least the prostitute has some form of talent
Nothing wrong with it; it was pleasant and had chill energy. But the songwriting was just pretty simplistic and didn’t surprise or excite me. Didn’t like nor dislike
Not my cup of tea
I might be petty, but Tom ain't it. A very soft southern rock from 70s with a distinctive vocal from Tom Petty. Unfortunately it's not my cup of tea. At the beginning I could hear some resemblance to Lynyrd Skynyrd, probably through that southern connection, but those two bands couldn't be any more different. I feel like the songs on Tom Petty's album are made straight for the charts - they don't take any risk, they are short and to the point, and also are one-dimensional. Is this album on the list, because it was one of the first southern rock examples in history? Because otherwise, it shouldn't have been included, as it has nothing outstanding, interesting or groundbreaking.
I'm a fan of Tom Petty, this is not one of my favorites though. He gets better, IMHO.
'Murican rock. This has some Springsteen vibes and I'm not a Springsteen fan in the slightest. Mostly really uninteresting. There was one part where I thought it kind of sounded like CAN, but I'm pretty sure that was a hallucination. I am the first person in the history of mankind to compare Tom Petty to the German experimental rock band CAN. He kind of looks like my middle school math teacher on the album cover. A female math teacher, I might add.
Not my cup of tea
The cover. The name. The music. Everything about this is generic.
I had higher hopes for the album since I’d heard American girl before, but the album felt forgettable and I didn’t particular enjoy Tom Petty’s voice
This the debut album from Tom Petty's band. It was initially ignored by US listeners until a year after release - once the positive reviews and the British tour brought attention to the album in the US - causing the album to be certified gold in the US. It is a classic rock and roll album, so one can expect all of the common tropes, but the actual quality of the music - instruments & vocals - is not bad. I'm not a giant fan of rock so hearing a run-of-the-mill rock album wasn't super exciting and this affects my rating of the album.
Meh
Best Song: American Girl. Something sort of works here with Tom Petty's kind of retrained, desperate sounding voice. Worst Song: Fooled Again (I Don't Like It). This song wasn't all that much worse than the others, but it was just boring enough, just late enough in the album to be the tipping point for me. Overall: Really as stock-standard as classic rock gets. To me, nothing here sticks out as noteworthy, none of the songs feel that differentiated. Sure it works fine as bland, rock-flavoured background music, but beyond that I can't imagine listening to this earnestly.
Boring generic classic rock. Next!
It's a good album, but no more than that for me. Classic, without taking risks, without innovation, only very conventional rock. I have nothing to say about it. A few arrangements were clever and nice. Ok, next.
Idk if it's necessarily bad, but definitely isn't my piece of cake
Honestly pretty mediocre, I only liked a couple songs (and they weren't the most streamed ones) but the rest were super basic and boring.
Aika geneeristä rokkia, ei säväyttänyt. 2/5
snooze
Unremarkable
Woof, goes from snail's pace to really slow at a breakneck 5 songs.
Debut albums often go one of two ways: either they are so good that they’re difficult to repeat or, as in the case of 'Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,' they’re so bad you wonder how a second one was ever recorded. Look, I’m not the world’s biggest Tom Petty fan, but neither am I a hater. I think Tom Petty’s solo LP, 'Wildflowers,' is a fine piece of work. Thankfully, his music matured well. This debut album, though, is a young 26 year old Petty putting his foot in the door. And I enjoyed the two hit toes that stuck out, what would become that signature, catchy Tom Petty sound: ‘Breakdown,’ and ‘American Girl.’ But quick, shut that door before the remainder of the eight get through! I was surprisingly disappointed right off the bat with the odd Everly Brothers harmonies on ‘Rockin’ Around’ and a quick two minutes of a song that never really developed. ‘Mystery Man’ is perhaps the only country/reggae hybrid I’ve ever heard, and I don’t want to hear it again. And ‘Luna,’ was, honest to God, a taste of prog Petty. Thank goodness he never tried this move again. ‘Hometown Blues’ was hokey, all the way around. ‘Fooled Again’ sounded like Petty trying his best to sound like Petty, all rock ‘n roll aloof; and, those one, high note synth fills in the background were further irritating. In fact, the entire band seemed to be struggling to find their place, their groove together, and instead came across playing rather stiff. First time studio nerves, perhaps? Mike Campbell is one of the finest lead guitarists around, but he’s nearly silent on this LP. Too bad the lyrics weren’t. By contrast, Aerosmith’s lyricist, Stephen Tyler, reads like Leonard Cohen. ‘Don’t need (Mama), don’t need school,’ Petty sings on ‘Anything That’s Rock n’ Roll’ (a tired, stereotypical title/them if there ever was one.) 'You don’t like your Daddy, and you don’t like rules.’ Rock n’ roll to the rescue! And perhaps it did help liberate the unfortunate oppressed minor in this song. Would that it have done the same for 'Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.'
More Tom Petty
I don't know what I was expecting but at least the songs are short.
Music your dad listened to while cleaning the boat and drinking bad beer.
I found this so boring. Absolutely nothing interesting in any of the songs. American Girl just about saved it from a 1
Well, it's an American rock album from 1976, isn't it? Not sure what else to say about it, other than its brevity (under 31 minutes) isn't really a virtue, cos several of the songs (particularly on side 1) tend to sound underdeveloped as if they're missing a verse or something (apparently "Breakdown" was edited to under three minutes from seven or eight). Better things were to come.
Its like a Pink Floyd album with worse vocals
Not for me
A singular song on an otherwise forgettable record. HOW IS IT THE LAST TRACK
I honestly didn't really listen it was so boring.
Middle of the road high school soft rock - he has better
proggy MOR
This is about as average as it gets for me. Not bad, but nothing stands out. American Girl is pretty much the only stand-out track for me.
han er sgu ok ham tom
Amerikansk 70’er rock, traditionelt
Not the worst thing in the world, just really not feeling any of it and subsequently struggled to get through the entire album (even though it's only 30 mins?). 'American Girl' stood out from the rest of the album but everything else is super bland. Wasn't keen on Tom Pettys voice either. Alright for background music I suppose.
"Its fucking bland" -Gordon
I really like a lot of Tom Petty songs but there is so much filler on this album
Inoffensive but listenable. Bit boring though. Breakdown, Fooled Again, and American Girl were good tracks but I'm not going to listen to this one again
idk about this one
I really do not like this guy's voice, it's very whiny. The music underneath is okay, and thankfully the songs are pretty concise. Overall, pretty meh on Thomas Petty here.
Inoffensive yet ultimately uninspired. Background music at best.
Bland, repetitive rock. There are flashes of intrigue here and there with good hooks, but they're greatly outweighed by the bland crooners and lack of genuine energy on any of the uptempo tracks.
more boring than expected
He’s got lovely shiny hair and he’s looking “wry.”
-Enjoyable but a little too "Dad rock" for me -Kinda Boring and inconsistent -Favourite songs are Strangered In The Night, American Girl
american girl is a tune, especially a fan of the heavy breathing on the breakdown. the rest of the album is just a bit wet though.
2 great songs… idk about the rest. It’s criminal that this is the only Tom petty on the list
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers
Bland.
Hard not to like a bit of Tom Petty but this record lacks any real memorable tunes
Can't stand dad rock that's about "rocking".
What’s up with that voice??
Has that kind of sound i really associate with the 70s. It's definitely not my favorite. The only 2 songs that really stand out to me are the 2 that I've heard before, Breakdown and American Girl
// Favs: — Score: Decent 2
dull
I couldn't stomach it. I take my medicine, but this pill was too bitter.
Meh
Not bothered
Reminded me of high school. Petty was a big deal back then. To hard to compare him to all that has come sine then, but he is definitely one of the great American rock n roller’s. Best of album is much better than this 2 hit one.
"Breakdown" Released: November 1976 "American Girl" Released: February 1977 "Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll" Released: April 1977 (UK only) "Rockin' Around (With You)" Released: August 1977 (Germany only)
Other than one song, I’d rather listen to static. I think it’s mostly Petty’s accent that’s ruining it for me.
lame
-i hear "last nite" in more than just american girl -strangered in the night sounds like stuck in the middle w u -i see why american girl is the hit overall not my cup of tea
Tom petty kinda BORING LOL
Eh. TP, on the whole, is essential, but that does not mean I enjoy it. The guys is definitely a-rocking and a-rolling, but why is he doing that? Some solid riffs. Brought some good energy now and again, but really no continuity through the album. Just riffin'... fade out... riff it up again. Over and over. By the time the last song came on, American Girl, which is probably his biggest hit and I've even enjoyed this song in the past, i simply could not be bothered. I was ready to be done, just as I am ready to be done with TP for quite some time. 5/10. Points because it's a classic, or so I'm told. Actually, all points awarded for the riff and chorus on Breakdown, which is a great song. No points awarded for any other reason.
Note hinzu. Wagnisloser Gitarrenrock-Pop.
Kinda just what it is lol. Like, it’s just that typa rock n roll ig
Tom Petty just looks fucking annoying on this album cover hey. Music is average 70s rock. I'm sure someone cared about it at some point (obviously the author cause it's one of the 2349023840238432094 albums on this list released in the late 70s) but tbh it's just boring. 2/5.
This is quite boring, i've never understood why Tom Petty breaks so many hearts. If we're here because of American Girl, let's listen to the song and move along, why waste time with the album.
Look, I know I complained about the Led Zeppelin album being too long, but this is just too short. The first song actually intrigued me, but then it built up to nothing. Then, about 3 songs in, I just started getting extremely sick of his voice and accent, it's super annoying. The guitars do moderately interesting stuff occasionally but overall if that's what you're looking for, go to another band... His voice is so annoying it makes it impossible for any of the songs to be catchy, and there's nothing else interesting about it. Even the strokes are better than this.
Seemed a bit standard to me, but just my opinion.
not great
not a fan
I did not like it. 3 songs in and it sounded like a piercing through my skin
Wins the award for the worst album cover on the list. This is horrific. Two bangers and 8 horrific songs, this pissed me off. Im upset. Best Song: Breakdown Rating: 2/10 Stars: 1
Not a fan
Breakdown is *OK*. Then it takes the entire album to get to the one somewhat good song on the album. I say somewhat because it's Tom Petty and it's all pretty bad, but that song doesn't suck quite as much as the rest. Or maybe it's because I heard it on the radio as a kid and nostalgia has tricked me into thinking it's a decent track. Either way I'm not sure why people loved his medicore rock so much back then.
Horrible Cover
me aburrió
mediocre. first album where I don't understand why it's on this list. I could've died without ever having heard this album or any song on it actually.
Yeah said it before, this is my least favourite kind of music. Tom Petty hasn’t changed my opinion on that just today. Sorry!
One of the blandest things I've ever listened to. Johnny Thunders had the best Heartbreakers by a country mile
It’s not the worst album I have heard this year… and I think he has some good songs, but not on this
A new low RGP…Tom.
Didn’t like the music or the vocals
🤮
Garbage. Not the artistic kind of garbage like the Garbage, just plain garbage. The compiler’s devotion to dreary joyless rock is nothing short of baffling.
Absolute MOR. Sounds like the kind of thing people who don’t actually like music listen to on the radio.
i’m exhausted from listening to the same uninteresting old white people music over and over again
It was ok. I wouldn’t choose it but I’d listen if it was on.
the 70's were a mistake
Disappointed. Tom petty was a big name that I hadn't really listened to. Was expecting some big rock chops. Instead it reminded me of Elvis costelo but without that super sharp songwriting you sometimes hear from him. This felt like kind of passive neutral rock to me. I accept that I'm wrong about it and I'm just not seeing the quality.
Petty
I listened to the 2009 remastered version. The instrumentals overshadow the vocals rather complement it. The music is good. But I have it playing in the background across the room and the music is out of thought. I prefer listening to music actively. I sing along then pause, read lyrics and scream, "No way the artist said that." (And not just with Drake). And even before 1001, I'd still prefer listening to albums. I consider them curated listening experiences from an artist. The music here tapers at the end. Which is common with the music from this era, but hey! You can't do that. This album does not make my heart flutter.
The curse of the American self-titled debut album strikes again! Tom can’t think of title - didn’t matter to nomarks like Boston Van Halen and The Cars so why should Tom try any harder. That attitude permeates the whole album. Feels cheap and quickly put together - who signed off that cover? Pretty ordinary backing band, can’t be the same guys that played with Johnny Thunders. (Subsequent research tells me they’re the guys who played on Johnny Cash’s American Recordings - must have impressed with experience). I’d rather listen to Nick Lowe than this and that explores similar territory but this is lacking focus. American Girl is good though. I’m sure I’ve heard better Petty LPs, but this is dull.
STOP FEEDING ME MEN TO LISTEN TO I DON’T GIVE A FUCK
Not for me
не мое
Good old Americana Rock.... take away the first word of my sentence then I've nailed it.
booooring
I listened to this recently while reading Mike Campbell's book, which deadbeats you should read as it is close to the best rock and roll bio I've ever read. The record truly reflects the limitations of a a band that has not found their feet. And "I'm Tom Petty" (in joke for those who have read the Mike Campbell book) has not yet figured our the talents within that band. I'm a Damn the Torpedoes guy, this is not worthy of any serious consideration.
Oh man, thay was generic. Didnt listen all of it.
Very boring
This album has been described as rock 'n roll, but more than that I feel it's a combination of americana folk (which I very much dislike) and pop music with some rock sensibilities. In another words, to me this plays like tailor-made Billboard top list music and it was an utterly meaningless album, not an unpleasant one but vanilla to the point of flavourless. There were few songs I recognised, but had not previously realised they were old Tom Petty tracks.
Not my case it felt like I was rushing through the album and not really getting there.
his voice was mid
ugyan olyan mint a tobbi random rock album shit type szar. semmi átütő, random énekel a csávó
Not my style at all
Forgettable except for “American Girl.”
More Like Tom Petty and the Earbreakers Note: I have no clue how culpable The Heartbreakers were in making this album, so I have left them out to protect their pride and sanity. The title is just a joke. This mid ass album doesn't even deserve that nomenclature. This is my first album out of the 1001, chosen randomly, and it tells me that this list is at least partially picked by a boomer. Because only nostalgia glasses could make someone put this mid album on a "1001 best albums ever" list. Then again, this wasn't even in the top 1000 albums released in 1976, so said boomer had pretty shit taste to begin with. For reference, I'm smack dab in the middle of millennial. The songs that did make it on my Liked Songs list (and gave this album any points at all), I suspect is because I've heard them thousands of times in the 90s on staticy radio stations. It was pretty surreal hearing them in HD after only hearing them in the lowest possible quality. The best thing about this album is that it is mercifully short. Tom manages to shove 10 songs into a 30 minute runtime. I don't know if my brain is just broken by being used to longer songs, but hearing a song be done after two and a half minutes is bizarre. I think I would be more upset if the songs were actually good. I feel like if this were released today, it would be openly mocked. The basic music with Tom Petty whining in his weird voice over it sounds more like parody than earnest music. I feel like Tom Petty & Co are at their best when they aren't trying so hard. In the end, I believe this was before they really found their sound, which makes sense: it was their first album. It sounds like an amalgamation of all of the popular rock released at the time, which doesn't make it particularly memorable. Also, there's a song that's pretty racist. It's 1976, Tom Petty. Do better. Scoring out of 20, the album got two points: I added Breakdown and Luna to my Liked Songs. I wanted to give them an extra point for reminding me that their best song, Mary Jane's Dance, existed. Unfortunately, that song was not on this album, so it doesn't count. 1/5
A bore and a half
American Girl is not enough to rescue the blandness of the remaining songs. Breakdown could have been more enjoyable if Tom wasn’t putting on some kind of try hard suave accent.
Did not finish, just not for me and just pretty generic I think- don't think rock and roll will really be for me
Petty's voice is an acquired taste and on some later albums it does become palatable. Not on this snorefest. A difficult listen.
this is a joke right? there is no reason for him to be singing like that? why is he doing that???? I didn’t hate “Breakdown” I think.. or one of the songs. Otherwise this album was trash.
Meh. Not really a fan of this band.
I don’t like Tom petty
Had no hits, this album was too early their career
Nope, nah, average as
noise
Da ist ja nicht mal Learning to fly drauf
Nasally and terrible. So so songwriting for supposedly one of the greats. Sorry not sorry, 0 stars.
Before listening to this, I was indifferent to Tom Petty. I didn't really have any opinions on him or his band. This debut actually makes me hate the band. Every song outside of American Girl is absurdly boring. Best Songs: American Girl Worst Songs: Strangered In The Night, Mystery Man
Front cover is what I imagine you get if you ask AI to generate an image of a classic cunt. Album lived up to expectations.
Meh
The instrumentals are unremarkable, but I really cannot stand the vocalists voice. Terribly grating. Best: Rockin' Around (With You) Worst: Hometown Blues
Garbage. No song ever takes off. As much flavor as flat sparkling water. Only one song is mediocre on the album.
Tom Petty is not a good singer. I'm not sure if it's the tone of his voice or the type of music he produces but his voice just isn't good to my ears.
Not for me
I don't get Tom Petty. He may have had some good songs, even though I don't like those either, but this record sucks.
some kind of an counterfeit Iggy Pop, but we already have one, and he is the best
the only rock and roll i like is the roller coaster
Already 1 star from the album cover alone. 🤮🤮🤮🤮
Bored Tom petty and the excitement breakers
Sigh. Roll over and go back to sleep. Not worth waking up for.
The blueprint for making a risk-avoidant and derivative album with minimum artistic effort. 1.0/5.0: Embarrassing
1. rocking around - 0 2. breakdouun - 1.5 3. bluez - 0 4. uuild one - 0 5. rock n roll - 1.5 6. night - 0 7. fooled again - 0 8. myztery man - 1 9. luna - 1 10. american girl - 1.5
Highlight: American Girl, Breakdown. In a nutshell: clumsy country rock There are some good elements on this album. Odd choice for the opener. Great closer. In my opinion, Damn The Torpedoes should be on the list instead. Overall: 2/10
Can't listen to classic rock'n role
Eigentlich ok, aber nicht dieses Album
So average, I zoned out both times I tried to listen to the album. Not awful, but Pettys little smirk on the album cover pisses me off. Significant 34/102 Liked 16/102 Added 4/102 NNN
Elvis Castillo-like. 2/10
I've already listened to this. Nothing against Tom Petty but I think I may have been over exposed growing up.
Tom Petty was the most hugely disappointing live show I have ever seen. This guy was full of himself. Listening to this record, it's clear that there is a reason anyone ever only hears the hits. At least it was short.
Second album I had to skip a song and actively disliked almost every minute.
Just bad
Geriatrically inspired…
I do not like Tom petty
A little underwhelming. Quite bluesy and dated. But American Girl is worth waiting for!
Ain’t no way I’m listening to Tom Petty
Okay, let me preface this with the fact that I will always rock out to 'American Girl'. It's a certified banger. But, unfortunately, Tom Petty is one of those vocalists that I can't enjoy. His style has never really jived with me. I'm saying that subjectively because I understand the importance of this album, but I really don't have fun with him as a frontman. He lacks energy and prescence.
There wasn't a single good song. Now don't get me wrong, they weren't atrocious, but goddamn not a single song here was worth remembering. As I finished the album I realized none had left just the slightest impression on me. Couldn't hum a single one. Couldn't remember a single lyrics. Nothing.
Didn't like any of it.
meh
This album was fun to jam to. Lots of upbeat songs with quality drums. I'm not sure, but one of the songs seemed to have racist lyrics. For that reason a low rating.
I want to give Tom Petty a swirly
Didn't listen to it
Bof... Bof... Merci Tom... RIP...
I don't like this album much. Boring classic pop rock without any edges.
I found this boring.
How to sound exactly like ANY OTHER hard rock band: A handbook
Didn't really feel it.
Some decent songs, but Tom Petty’s voice is super annoying
Fun intro! Good harmonies. The first track proper feels a bit bland and pub rock. As does Hometown Blues. This is very boring so far. The Wild One, Forever is an improvement. Bruce Springsteen without the charisma. Or Meatloaf without the humour. But at least it's the first track that aims high, even if it misses. Anything That's Rock and Roll brings back the boredom. The next album in the book is the Modern Lovers. They do the same rock n roll schtick, except Jonathan Richman has a wit and joy to his songs and delivery, rather than regurgitating the same clichés over and over again. Nothing especially different until American Girl, which is a marked improvement. The lyrics are the blandest trash, but musically it is actually listenable, which is a marked improvement. Still. I like lyrics that do more than "Oh yeah. Alright. Hey baby." Possibly because I can tie my own shoelaces. A big fat 1 here. Boring music for boring people.
The worst of Tom Petty
Half a star for American Girl, half a star for the hot woman on the cover
Not my stuff baby.
Don't like the rock-country style
