Reviews (page 10 of 12)

I remember when Tom Petty passed I was at a bar in a casino in PA debating his significance in the echelons of music history. This middle America girl told me how much his music meant to her, while I had to break it to her that he wasn’t all that important. And that’s Tom Petty to me, some A&R driven nostalgia machine that had a bunch of great singles, but never really had anything important to say. Maybe I’m being harsh, but I couldn’t imagine a need for this album beyond mindless fun at some local bar on a Saturday night.

I've always found TP a bit meh and this Heartbreakers debut is a bit Springsteen, a bit Steely Dan and a lot of meh.

Van The Beatles (-1 ster) tot George Baker (Strangered in the Night).

American Girl is an all time banger. RIP Tom Petty

good songs within. not worthy of a 4

Nice solid stadium easy rock. Better than I expected

Very much a debut album, American Girl a startling single that would grab attention, but behind it a sound that was still emerging from the shadows of 70s rock into something different.

Not bad but Petty has better albums that should be on here. A good first try as Breakdown and American Girl are obviously classic, Stranger's in the Night also good

Nice album with classics like American Girl. Not the best one from Tom - that is “Damn the Torpedos” maybe. It makes its thing, does not overpromise, does not under deliver… that’s it.

Well, it was kinda cold that night She stood alone on her balcony (Ooh) Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by Out on 441 like waves crashin' on the beach And for one desperate moment there He crept back in her memory God, it's so painful when something that is so close Is still so far out of reach Its so LA it hurts, and its a good catalog of 70s rock. Overall, its decent. 3/5

Semi chill vad menade sidner om trummorna dock,,,,,

Some great songs

Minus points for album name originality! The album is good, but could have a bit more to it - seems to sit about half way between Springsteen and Bon Jovi without quite getting the lyrical storytelling of Springsteen or the catchiness and infectious energy of Bon Jovi (aside from American Girl). 3/5, hoping we get some more of them later in their career when they've refined their sound a bit.

Aside from Breakdown and American Girl, this was a rather unremarkable album. It doesn’t quite know what it wants to be yet. It has tinges of Beatles, country rock, with flashes of Tom Perry’s signature brand of heartland rock. It is always interesting to see where great artists started out from, but this is not a great debut.

Pretty decent album, but the singing is a bit iffy in places and none of the songs really grabbed me.

un po' melenso.

Very 70s. Good debut album from Tom Petty and band.

Genre: Rock and Roll Favorite songs: Fooled Again (I Don't Like It), American girl

Breakdown. American Girl. Then some blues/ballads filler.

Iconic album in the American rock world, although it's interesting to note that the album got much more attention first in the UK before catching on later in the US. Enjoyable, catchy songs, very well written and well executed, nothing fancy and I think that's a large part of the appeal for me. Definitely on the professional level, it still feels accessible and "garage band"-like. Always liked it, and still do.

I was honestly kind of disappointed in this album. Other than the two hit songs off this album, this album is just a bunch of paint-by-numbers blues rock songs. It left me feeling the same way I do when I listen to Cheap Trick or the Black Keys. They are doing generic rock, which is fine to listen to in the background, but it's not very interesting. Still, American Girl is a fucking banger 3/5

Pretty fun and energetic album, with just hints of the songwriting prowess that would be later revealed.

A few classics here. Standouts: American Girl, Breakdown, 3.5

Tom Petty hit a bit like an electric Dylan. I can see why he is a Wilbury

This is rudimentary but very listenable TP. I prefer the 80s stuff but American Girl is a banger.

American girl stand out hit the rest never really got me going

Pretty much what I expected.

A fun, catchy, and concise record; unfortunately there's not too much beyond that to my ears. Some melodic guitar playing and crisp production through most of the album. Some cool moments like American Girl almost sounding like proto-Strokes at times. Petty's vocal delivery can go from raw and convincing to overly affected and distracting fairly easily. Additionally, It tends to lean a bit hard on sounds and ideas more or less established by groups like the Stones years earlier (with some definite exceptions ie. Luna) Still an enjoyable listen and a definite feel-good rock and roll album. Favorite Tracks: Breakdown Luna American Girl

I expected to enjoy this album more. Few highlights outside of American Girl. 3/5

This is an album that has a few good 'Tom Petty' high moments but on most of it it feels like they are very much still trying to find their sound. Very middle of the road stuff from a bunch of artists that are definitely capable of much more unique things. Not that that's the worst thing in the world, sometimes it takes a while to figure out what works and obviously when they hit 'American Girl' its like announcing Tom Petty has arrived to the world.

I’ve always thought Tom Petty to have been somewhat overrated. I’ll admit, I’ve only heard a handful of songs before today, but the ones I’ve heard never exactly made me want to seek out more. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Breakdown Each song on this album was pretty good, but there wasn’t really anything that made it stand out. I’ve always found his squeaky nasal singing a little annoying and almost like a caricature, but thankfully the album was short at only 30 minutes so it never got to the point of making me want to stop listening. Vocals aside, the music was much better than I expected it to be. It reminded me of Foreigner at times, which I wasn’t expecting at all and was a welcome surprise. Overall, this was a decent rock album but certainly not something I’d consider amazing. Oh, and can we also take a moment to really soak in how cringy that album set is?

I am a fan of Tom Petty and his Heartbreakers. But I have always wondered why they are so beloved because there's nothing particularly skillful about how they compose or play songs (Free Fallin might be the easiest rock song ever to play, though it's still a beauty). Same goes for this album. I definitely enjoyed it. But why? What about it is so memorable, groundbreaking, unique, or masterful? I could give it a 4 for being a fun rock album with classics like Breakdown and American Girl (and hidden gems like Strangered in the Night or The Wild One, Forever). But that doesn't seem fair and they have better albums than this.

It's a decent enough debut album but honestly nothing more than that. There's a few songs that rise above the mediocrity (American Girl, Strangered In the Night) but how you would open the album with a song like 'Rockin' Around (With You)' is beyond me.

I'll admit I'm not overly familiar with the rock legend known as Tom Petty. I remember once I was working and my work band and I were playing covers as an opening to this event, and someone shouted at us from the audience, "Play some Tom Petty!" and our singer responding with something awkward and funny that I can't for the life of me remember. I'm gonna say it, this record is kinda fun y'all. There's some kind of earnestness about it that I really like. Right down to the main man Tom's smirk on the cover and the Flying V piercing the heart. There's a lot of pretty competent blues playing on this record, though maybe not wholly original and groundbreaking stuff here. I was surprised by how country this album could sound at times. Petty's vocals are inconsistent to me on this album, they go from being really distracting because it sounds like he's trying to put on an accent(but the accent itself is inconsistent) to being pretty decent. Some of the harmonies are really nice, too. I will say the lyrics on "Strangered In The Night" are a little.. 70s, and a little bit dated. When I got to "American Girl," I was like, oh yeah! I've heard this one before! It may be his most popular song but it's still a pretty damn good song. I'd be open to checking out more of Petty's later work to see how he evolved as an artist from this point! Favourite tracks: Rockin' Around (With You,) Breakdown, American Girl Least favourite tracks: Strangered In The Night, Fooled Again (I Don't Like It) (though I do think the track name is very funny) 7/10!

Well, that went by fast. None of the songs are memorable and honestly, I can't believe American Girl even is a hit.

It’s solid nothing special though 3/5.

First time listening to Tom Petty and his band and this wasn't a great showing. It's perfectly bland middle of the road stuff. Never tries too hard and never fails, just bland. Middling stuff. Can't say it's horrible but just blah.

Pretty damn good, and merits a bonus point for pure debut confidence. A lot of the elements are already there, though with the notable exception of American Girl they hadn't yet learned to meld it all into weaponized earworms.

Most of the album just flew buy me without leaving a significant impression. I disliked the horrendous cover and the music felt like something I imagine oldschool American dads listen to. But then the last song came and that is just straight up amazing hit song. Made me return back to a few other songs as well and redeemed the record a lot in my eyes.

I totally respect Tom Petty as an icon of American music, but he's never been a favorite of mine. I think a lot of his hits have really similar ideas (particularly in the choruses), and the production- specifically in songwriting elements and arrangements always left a lot to be desired for me. Plus his voice just didn't do that thing for me that it did for so many other people. Man the first song his voice is super grating. Damn. I think it's like some Beatles-homage (early Beatles)? Not a particularly pleasing sound on the ears though. The second track, "Breakdown", is much much more easy on the ears. Got that kind of Thin Lizzy / Phil Lynott sound to it (fun fact I just learned- this album came out only 7 months after Thin Lizzy's most famous album, "Jailbreak"). I think overall it's a strong 3/5 for me. It's hard to write anything negative though while looking at the album cover, what a damn handsome dude.

Goof. Cool vibe.

carino

Not overly exciting, although I see the appeal.

Is good

Dobar ali ne kužim skroz to

Tom Petty. Fantastic Debut record. Not perfect and there's a bit of filler but a great show of what is to come. Breakdown is so good easily the best track on the record, such groove. American Girl is alright 3/5

Pas mal en vrai

NOICE. never really care much for Tommy. This is a cool debut. maybe on a bored day I’ll check out more of his stuff. RIP. nice little 70s rock project ain’t nothing wrong wit dat.

I'm not the biggest Tom Petty fan but this was pretty decent. Favorite: Breakdown

Tom Petty is great! Album didn't stand out to me like the others have. American girl pulls weight on the rating. 7/10

5/10 generic rock that does not really give any interesting insights

My only issue is that the album suffers from a few forgettable songs but it's a really solid debut album, would recommend. RIP Tom Petty

Didn’t blow me away

It was a nice album. Didn’t recognize any songs but I can see why people enjoy the guy.

Was very entertaining but I wasn’t hooked, nothing really jumped out at me besides one track

3.7 - As a debut it’s a notable introduction to Petty’s exceptionally lean but effective songcraft. Also, at 31 minutes, it’s refreshingly brief. The last three songs end this record on a dizzying high after a somewhat humdrum first half. “Luna” is a deep track worth revisiting.

I wouldn't like to say I don't like this or even that it doesn't deserve it's place here only that it doesn't appeal to me as outstanding. There's other artists that did this genre I prefer. Having said all this it's pleasant enough as background filler.

Funky, pretty enjoyable.

3/5 Blues/Rock and Roll. Short album that packs plenty of variety whilst still staying true to the genre. Plenty of subtle Rhodes organ throughout. Vocals feel very fresh from song to song due to singers wide variety. Rocking Around (with you) vocals are heavily reminiscent of the Beatles, where as American girl has obvious punk influences.

Not bad, but not my cup of tea. Worth existing just for the inclusion ‘Breakdown’ alone though.

Exactly what I expected for the good and the bad.

Good, but I really prefer Damn the Torpedoes.

Not the worst, but boring. Never could get into Tom Petty

Enjoyed it but nothing too special, a few classics for sure

American Girl is solid but nothing else jumped out at me. Not terrible though

The two most popular tracks are the best ones. Outside of those, nothing really sticks out.

I liked a few songs, but pretty much none of his best stuff was on here

American Girl is good, the rest was okay.

Not bad

American Girl is just one of those classics...and the rest of the album is pretty solid too...Tom Petty is one of those guys, I know a lot of his work, but I don't think I have ever owned a single thing the man has put out...a little odd, but there it is.

Exactly what I expected for the good and the bad.

Perfectly serviceable rock performance with the classic American Girl (which The Strokes sure owe a debt to). A tap along but lacking memorable hooks.

I liked this one. Its been a bit since there was an album were all the songs were generally well liked. 1. Rockin' Around (With You) 2. Breakdown 3. Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll

I like some Petty tracks, but it seems not all; some are just too MOR. But it does end with the classic American Girl.

It's a solid debut but not too exciting. He has much better stuff later in his career

Good instruments. Tom petty can sing but his voice is a bit whiney

Not every song is a winner, but definitely a solid album

A succinct and unoffensive rock'n'roll album with plenty of earworm tracks that have now become foundations and pillars for countless artists to follow. Nearly every song adheres to a strict verse-chorus-verse structure, with the sole exception of 'Luna', which musters up the courage to diverge to a verse-chorus-bridge routine - scandal! Jokes aside though, I really enjoyed that track for all of the diversity it brought, relative to the rest of the rather formulaic album. Those nit-picks as they are though, the whole album is fast enough and enjoyable enough to not really get caught up by any of them. The impression that endures is of a bright and tight production with just enough soul and energy to get your butt wiggling in your chair.

Yeah, take this 3 and get out of my way.

It was better in my memory. A bit too generic..thanks but no thanks

It's a good rock album. Some big hits mixed in with some filler. I like Tom Petty but wasn't amazed by this album.

Not really my cup of tea, but quite enjoyed it nonetheless, easy listen.

Love American girl

Ganska intetsägande, inget direkt minnesvärt

Was this the Tom Petty album they want us to hear?

It's ok. I'm not a fan of the group and am perplexed that they got into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Did anyone ever start a band because them? Has anyone ever claimed being influenced by them? Those would be my criteria at a minimum for getting into the Hall. Pedestrian at best.

Bit of an odd choice of albums this one. Very much a first album with some finding his way to do. Couple of great tracks, but much more was to follow.

A couple of classics: Breakdown, American Girl. Others: Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll 3.5/5

I’m not the biggest fan of his voice, but otherwise this album is pretty good. I would say it’s above average mainly due to the instruments. The lyrics are generally pretty interesting as well. I think the slower songs are relatively better than the upbeat ones, but otherwise, there’s not much more to say about this album other than it’s a nice, good rock and roll album. Favorite track: Breakdown

Tom petty is a hit maker, that's for sure. Not sure I need to listen to a full album though. Happy to let the greatest hits be my gatekeeper for this one.

I wish that the deep tracks had the incredible spark that the singles do. Some great songs, but just a decent album.

Genre: Heartland Rock 3/5 Tom Petty, a name almost more recognizable than any of the songs he's played or written, released his debut album along with his backing band, The Heartbreakers, in 1976. His particular brand of "American" rock was not quite so new, even for '76, as Springsteen was already beginning to hone the sound all his own. While this sound would be a mega hit with the people who lived in the country at the time, it's certainly not very exciting or very interesting anymore, at least to me. Tom Petty and co. give us 9 totally average rock songs, and one good-ass single, American Girl. The run of tracks, from #3 Hometown Blues to #9 Luna, are absolutely unremarkable. I listened to this album just a few days ago, and I couldn't tell you how any of them sound. The first two tracks, Rockin' Around (With You) and Breakdown, were both pretty good, well-produced pop rock songs, but the rest of the album reeked of filler. As I said earlier, American Girl is a classic, and one of Tom Petty's gems, but that doesn't make up for the rest of the album's mediocrity. Stale, bland, but listenable.

it's ok

Obviously 'American Girl' is the big single from this album, and I've also heard 'Breakdown'. However, this album seemed like fairly generic boomer dad rock. I feel like Petty is the Great Value brand version of Springsteen.

I have enjoyed many a Tom Petty song over the years, so I was actually pretty surprised by how average this album was. It was certainly easy enough to listen to, and a couple of the tracks are Tom Petty classics, but I personally didn't find the entire album's offering to be anything significant enough to warrant a spot in this project. A decent first album, though!

I've never been able to get into Tom Petty for some reason. That smirk on the album cover might have something to do with it. He sounds like he's literally finding his voice here. Like he's some kind of A.I. generated rock star, created in a secret lab by the other members of The Traveling Wilburys and sent back in time to defeat Bruce Springsteen. Unfortunately, they had to rush the process and sent him back through the timegate before he was complete, so he ended up being kind of unstable and ultimately failing his mission. Just look at that face on the cover: that's not the overconfident young face of a rock star at the outset of his career, it's the face of a lab created monster acknowledging that he failed.

Surprised I like it more than I thought I would. Still not overly into this type of Tom Petty sound but in a certain bar or setting I can get down with this. Almost gave it a 4 but it's still a 3 since I don't see myself going to the songs on my own.

Found it to be a bit of boring dad rock. It's consistent but I wasn't really into it.

Pretty good. Not sure why they left the best song for last.

Stand out track - Breakdown

Solid rock n roll album

The epitome of (white) US boomer nostalgia rock…?

Already listened to it

A soild American rock album. Special mention to American girl the song the strokes ripped off when writing last night.

Absolute bangers on here, but some absolute filler songs too.

I miss Tom Petty. And, I will add, I tend to prefer the extra sophistication that came with later albums (most notably Into the Great Wide Open).

American Girl is worth waiting for and adds a point.

I could see how this is a timeless album, but a little cheesy for my liking.

Average

Average

Ok. Some nice tunes on there

Jangly guitars make way for Americana music. Petty is going and sounds it. He’s got so much to say and SAYS IT.

I really liked this. 3.5/5

Nothing to hate, nothing to love, simple as that. But "American Girl" is a classic. 2.5/5

nada de especial, classic rock médio

Lekkere pop-muziek. Niks mis mee.

A good 3 though

Straightforward rock music, with enough rise and fall in the tracklist to keep things interesting. Comes to a more or less skillful landing. My concern with the lyrics was not even secondary this time around. The opener is engaging enough to draw one in, though, and there was nothing that made me want to exit the ride. Worth the time.

A classic but not my favorite

It's definitely not his best and at times it veered a bit too much into the Springsteen aesthetic for me to take seriously, but it's also not the worst I've ever heard.

I'm a big Tom Petty fan but this wasn't a great example of his work I don't think. A couple of good songs that I've heard a million times (Breakdown & American Girl) but besides that it was pretty forgettable. Mystery Man had a Van Morrison feel that I wasn't expecting.

Never listened to this album. Have heard the track American Girl, but that's all. I know Tom Petty is critically acclaimed by the music press.

A solid album with a few excellent songs hinting at something more promising.

Was never a big fan, but I do have a lot of respect for the dude and like a handful of his songs. This album has two of them (American Girl and Breakdown). The rest was ok but I'm still more of a selective listener.

Sunny, pleasant rock. Particularly liked Fooled Again

3.5/5. American girl is the biggest banger here, rest I could take or leave

Much more suitable fory beleaguered soul.

I already know breakdown & american girl, but the rest of the album is pretty good too. Those 2 songs are the best ones though.

solid sound, didn't blow my mind.

While this album was alright, I've never been the biggest fan of Tom Petty in general. He has some good songs and was great with the Wilbury's but I've never enjoyed most of his music. Objectively though, this wasn't an awful album and had some good songs. Fav: Rockin Around, American Girl

Honestly prefer his work as Lucky on King of the Hill

Forgettable but not bad

I'm not sure how this really stands out from other similar albums.

One star off for the album cover. OK Brit rock but not quite distiguished.

Holds up. Solid album.

Not his best work but pretty good

I see you, Tom. You’re getting there.

I'm familiar with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, There is some of their songs that I do have on high rotation but not from this album. Personally this album just isn't for me.

middling - American Girl only song I really enjoyed. almost rounded down to 2 on this one.

Meh 🤷

I wish I could give more based on American Girl, that song is epic. And Breakdown as well. But overall the other tracks were underwhelming.

51.Top Petty & Heartbreakers - Tom Petty & Heartbreakers 10 tracks Before l started listening I didn't think I liked Tom Petty, despite absolutely loving Free Falling and not being able to name another track. Do I just not like the name? Breakdown made me stop what I was doing and start to pay more attention. This was startlingly good. The rest of the album is ok, (not special), but I now know that I do like Tom Petty & can appreciate that I bet this was pretty influential at the time. Fooled Again is amazing, (play it loud and sing along!) Americal Girl is such a good finish to the album. 3/5

Meh, It's ok I guess

Fooled Again was a nice surprise. Other than Breakdown, and American Girl, the rest of this album is pretty meh. However, you can definitely hear a lot of what was to come from this band. The songs that they included the keyboards more prominently were definitely better than the others.

American Girl is a great song but most of this doesn't really stand out to me. Sort of middle of the road roots rock. It's funny, some of the critical reviews talk about how this was almost underground at the time and compare to the Ramones but to my ear it has none of the bite or aggression of 70's underground punk music. I suppose in the 70's era of big, over the top Zeppelin rip-offs this probably felt more revolutionary but in 2020 it just sounds a bit too tame for me. It's not bad, but not very interesting either. Just fine.

This is a bit disappointing. I know Tom Petty mainly from his early nineties hits and I was looking forward to exploring his, presumably even better, earlier material, but this is a bit boring and unispiring. American Girl is a banger but the rest is quite forgettable seventies rock. 6/10

Pretty standard rock 'n' roll.

to bland

Breakdown is still a great song, but Tom hadn't found his iconic vocal style on this album. I like the hammond organ on Luna. American Girl batts last on the record and is a perennial favorite of mine.

Fred makes a convincing argument

Was good easybto listen to

American Girl at the very end of the album was by far the best song on the album. Never really cared for Tom Petty but the album's respectable and easy to listen to. Breakdown also isn't bad. 7/10.

70lerde yasasaydim fav albumlerimden biri olabilirdi

Nice Album with American Girl as obvious classic.

It's Tom Petty. New wave punk rock with swagger and attitude. Of course, he never forgot to include tunes too. Best Tracks: Breakdown; Fooled Again (I Don't Like It); American Girl

Pretty solid album. Tom pettys guitar skills is far better than his singing. This album has some hits and some of the other songs aren’t that special. It flows well and started the stardom of Tom petty. Overall it was good. 7.2/10

Maybe top 3 Heartbreakers albums. Maybe top 5 if we include solo Tom Petty.

smug looking mf

medium burn 70s classic rock

Started to like this more after a second listen.

My first time listening to a Petty record from start to finish. Isn’t exactly my brand of rock but I imagine it was very popular in the 70’s. I appreciate all the dance grooves.

Reminds me kinda of Springsteen. Great songs but he still had a lot of growth after this record

Interestingly enough I didn't know this band at all before listening. I quite enjoyed the whole album, and particularly the songs Strangered in the night, Anything that's rock 'n roll, American Girl.

Some classics on here, Breakdown & American Girl. The rest are very same-ish.

Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. A lot of these tracks sound like they would be a blast to learn on guitar. I also love that Petty looks like the softest member of Sodom on this album cover.

Cool intro, had a slow but good feel to it.

CONTESTO: 1976, Florida.

ok i guess

Solid Rock N' Roll album from Tom Petty in his debut. I was only familiar with Breakdown and American Girl prior to this listening. While the rest of the album is fine to good, if you've already heard those two tracks you're not missing much on the rest of the album. This gets three stars on the strength of those two songs, otherwise it's probably a two

The hits bring the score up to a 3/5

Surprised American Girl wasn't the first hit on this album, let alone it was the last song on the list. Obviously his early work and he got really good at writing hits. This is middle of the road for me. Not great. Certainly not bad.

An ok listen, haven't heard about this group before, but it was a decent rock'n'roll album. Best: Anything that's Rock'n'Roll, Breakdown Worst: Fooled Again (I Don't Like It), Strangered in the night 2.5 Stars

It was alright. Nothing really stood out. Never been a massive fan of Petty, anyway.

They aren't all hits, but I get from Breakdown to American Girl mainly just on the enthusiasm of the whole thing.

bit boring idk i like the vibe

Can’t believe I hadn’t listened to this album before.

Inoffensive

Pure rock, pleasant to the ear. :) I can imagine listening to these songs, while sitting at a bar, drinking a beer. Not sure if I'd ever fallen in love with them, though.

A pretty solid album that has one foot in rock n'roll history and another in the punk revolution to come. The 1-2 opener of raggedy hoedown "Rockin' around (with you)" with the sleek "Breakdown" are superb but most of the album is serviceable but not amazing. A lot of songs or styles here that Petty and co. would perfect on later albums. It does close with "American Girl" though, an absolute 24 carat gold power pop classic.

Basic 70' rock, it will always sound good

Tom Petty never did much for me but I'll admit that "The Heartbreakers" are carrying the weight here. Simple well-produced pop rock is all that's here, and it's good! Won't go back to it, but it was nice enough at the time.

Pretty good, especially the songs that I knew. 2RS

Decent

Listened to this @6 am on the way to the airport

Better than I expected. 2nd half better than the 1st.

creepy as fuck album cover but good fun american rock album.

I think I was more of a fan of Tom Petty than the entire heartbreaker ensemble. This album reminded me of other old rock albums which makes sense with this coming out in 1976 but it felt like it was missing that spark from songs like Free Fallin and Running Down and Dream.

It's alright if you love this album, it's alright if you don't. I'm not afraid of listening to it again.

A few good songs to tempt. Toys around with some fun tracks

Enjoyable, will have to check out other Tom Petty stuff

I'd never really listened to the difference between Tom Petty's solo albums and the Heartbreakers albums. Listening to this one I think I like his solo stuff better though there isn't a substantial difference. The only song on this album I really liked was American Girl.

It’s a fun classic rock album. A good time, but nothing too notable. Favorite tracks: “Breakdown” and “American Girl”

The song I enjoyed the most was actually the song that played after the album finished when I didn’t realize it was only 30 minutes

Fun sprint. Classic rock, with a touch of southern and some punk elements.

Man. Tom Petty sure listened to a lot of the Eagles before he made his debut. "Breakdown" could be a middle track on "The Long Run". But boy, he's here on display. This has some of his biggest hits (American Girl and the aforementioned Breakdown) but it also has a lot of his influences on his sleeve. Solid listen. It's tight, concise. Just what a debut should be. But a lot of the non singles just wash over you.

Love Tom Petty, but this album didn’t have a whole lot for me. “Breakdown” is a big hit, but many others on here I didn’t know. It seems this was early in his career exploring different rock and even country/blues styles. Still, a good listen. Hope we get more from Tom. Favorite tracks: Breakdown, Mystery Man, Fooled Again. Album art: I really like this, it’s a classic classic rock cover style. Great logo, great photo. No complaints. 3.5/5

Meh, it was ok

Sounds pretty generic. Some nice riffs I guess. Emotionless.

Pretty good!

Not bad!

Well, American Girl is a certified banger surely. I enjoyed the rest of the album - probs great driving music. Dare I say Dad music?

I can see the appeal but not really my kind of music style.

Clearly a couple of strong tracks on the album, but a lot of other "meh" tracks. Nothing too rough, but also nothing that begs for additional listens. Certainly better Tom Petty albums to listen to.

Tom Petty's voice has always been hit or miss for me. Of course, the classics on this album are Breakdown and America Girl, which I love. Some songs that caught my attention immediately on this album are "Fooled Again" (kind of reminds me of the Eagles) and "Anything That's Rock and Roll."

A little country twang in a couple songs there. Didn't know ol' Tommy had that in him, but I should have. Was really nice to listen to this record.

After listening to almost half a century's of music since this album was released, 'Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' doesn't offer anything unique or particularly interesting.

It's fine! But Breakdown is perfection.

Fine. Strong first track, but sorta petered out.

I like Tom Petty. He makes real music

The album was fine, but goddamn there's not a lot of Tom Petty that I vibe with.

Overall it's not one of my favorite albums, but it has some great songs. American Girl is a total classic. Petty got better as his career went on. I'm not sure this album totally belongs on this list, but it's pretty good.

Honestly, I've never gotten the hype and Tom Petty's voice annoys me. I did like this album better than I thought I would, Rockin Around With You and Breakdown particularly, but towards the end his shouty voice was grating on my nerves again.

Not my fave petty

American Girl was great - the rest was average rock - imagine it would be good if you were doing a road trip across USA

American Girl is a great song but the rest of the album didn't knock my socks off on the first listen through.

I like tom petty. Though some of his songs seem to blend together. This album was pretty good overall. o overarching theme.

Dad rock of the finest order. Pairs nicely with Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen.

Still not a huge fan, but “Breakdown” and “American Girl” are classic...

Signs of greatness to come and American Girl is awesome!

Cool album, some nice songs to listen but not something that can be considered masterpiece

Two massive hits and a whole lot of what feels like incomplete demos. A pretty good debut. Best track: American Girl

Fairly standard rock album. Not my favorite.

I'm sure at the moment it was pushing boundaries. Yeah, there's a few instances where musically it's ahead of its time. It's worth noting. But an entire album's worth of this bland country-boy rock just falls flat to me. I attempted various listens, and I can't bring myself to enjoy it. At best I can forget it's on while it plays in the background. 2.3/5

I like Tom Petty but this derivative and flat

This one didn't move me much when it came out, still doesn't today. I think Petty's a better songwriter than he is a singer.

Oh wow, more blues rock. Not awful, but it is not doing anything that hasn’t been done a thousand times over.

Maybe some might see this as blasphemy but there is some rock from this era that feels so generic I can't distinguish one band from the other. This is one of those albums.

When the cover popped up, I knew immediately it wasn't for me. I was right, I didn't dig it, even tho I don't think is necessarily garbage or somethin like that. Maybe I'll give it a second listen sometime in the future.

Siri, play the album with the opposite vibe to the album I listened to yesterday (pink moon by nick drake). Didn’t really enjoy this one

Don’t think I’d ever listened to Tom Petty before this. On the other hand, it’s equally possible I’ve heard every song he’s ever done and instantly forgotten them all. New sub-genre created: ‘forget-me-rock’

It's a decent album, but Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have made many better albums - Damn The Torpedoes and Into The Great Wild Open, for two, and of his solo albums (with heavy involvement from the Heartbreakers) Wildflowers and Full Moon Fever are much better than this. so - 2 stars, for the timeless American Girl

I don't know what I expected from Tom Petty, but it wasn't this. Just annoying and boring. At least it was short.

Tom Petty sucks, he’s boring and the worst type of American music.

I like Tom Petty, but there's only one good song on this record. The rest is completely forgettable.

Fine album, just not my thing

favs: breakdown strangered in the night fooled again (i don’t like it) rating 1.5/5

I really like Tom Petty , but the problem with the band is if you had to tell me "what album would you put on this list?" I'd probably say Full Moon Fever. Tom Petty has so many great songs spread throughout less-great albums, but definitely deserves a place. That said if I had to pick a Tom Petty album this would be maybe my like, 4th or 5th option? Yet it is the only one on here. This is fine. It's about 1 part really good song to 2 parts filler. The thing with Tom Petty is I don't think there's anything particular about him or his music that makes it standout, rather its that the music he makes is incredibly competent mainstream. Like it's really good, often unadventurous, rock. As a result when it hits, the music becomes this perfectly balanced concoction that becomes so much more then the sum of its parts. When it doesn't, you get a lot of this album which is supremely unremarkable.

For all that I’ve ever been unimpressed by Bruce Springsteen and heartland rock adjacency, this is impressively worse. And boring. And safe. Sorry, Tom.

Was not expecting it to be that good Favs : The loser in the end, father to son

Outside of American Girl, nothing else stood out

Despite "American Girl" flexing its preternatural strength to lift the album up, I just didn't get into it. I think I'll like his later albums more. *Checks list* -- oh. I guess I'm that guy who gives the only Tom Petty album on the list a 2. : \

Although I hate the term, it's very easy listening dad rock.

A couple of decent songs but the rest were trash

TOATHB are yacht rock pretending not to be yacht rock. I like yacht rock. I dont like yacht rock masquerading as not yacht rock, (see Fleetwood Mack as another example).

Annoying and boring

Boring

not a bad album. definitely a couple of hits on here. I liked this more than I thought I would but still not a great album for me. Giving this a 2

4.5/10 This is an album with approximately 1.5 good songs (American Girl and Rockin' Around With You), a bunch of mediocre tracks, and some major, epic flops. A lot of the time my opinion on the songs depends on how Tom Petty decides to use his voice: is he doing the rough sound, attempting gravelly but failing miserably (bad)? Or is he singing normally (okay to good)? Generally speaking the music also sounds dated and doesn't hold up, so... Yeah. Not a great album.

i dont like his voice. american girl is great. the rest of the album comes off as proto butt rock. 2.5

Old dad rock

I should probably be less judgy of a lot of classic rock. This is a good album I wouldn't have expected to like, but it was pretty good. really liked the dual rhythm guitars on Fooled Again. but American Girl is the real standout for a reason. Solid 5/10, good to listen to, but I'm not going back to it very often.

Liked him so much more in middle school. Never noticed how bad he mumbles and the words dont really make me want to try to understand it. The music doesn't make up for it.

Ok, this project will frequently force me to overcome my biases to actually give the album for the day a shot. When I saw this come up, my immediate reaction was, maybe I'll skip this one... But I can't, it's only day two. I must push on. My association with Tom Petty is feeling annoyed by his songs played too often on the classic rock radio station my dad always listened to. Fortunately, the worst offenders are not on this album. I was only familiar with "Breakdown" and "American Girl" before this listen-through. Listen, Tom Petty's voice is just too big an impediment for me to overcome. Even if I said I liked the music, vocals are too important to me--an extremely non-musical person--to ever make this an enjoyable experience. I realized before it played that I was confusing "American Girl" with Petty's song "Free Fallin'" and I was just grateful to not have to listen to "Free Fallin'." Maybe the highest praise I can give this album.

I thought I had managed to listen to one song and then I checked and the album was over. Blissfully short album that I didn't even notice was playing Repetative backing and unimpressive singing. 2

It's got some jams, but mostly meh compared to his later stuff.

If this is the only one of his albums to make the list I'll be confused, it's not a bad album or anything it's just that he's got at least 4 albums that are way superior to this. It's an easy listen but there's not much memorable apart from American girl ofc.

So boring. Just incredibly generic, bland rock & roll with no redeeming qualities. Total snoozefest.

it was okay

it's alright

This is a perfectly fine album but an old friend had the album and wanted a recording of it, I made a cassette of it and every where we went she played the tape. To say I got sick of it is an understatement. This fresh listen decades later didn't soften me up.

Top Marks for American girl,obvs

Not much to say on this, it didn't engage me and no standout tracks

Once you get past the tortured vocals there is a very mediocre album underneath. Fortunately it's only 30 minutes long.

why do people like him

Meh. Tom Petty is as good as his singles. Another pillar of dad rock based solely on his hits.

Can't really get into this sort of music. It is too light for me in terms of american rock. Once again it goes too far into blues territory.

"Mum, can we have David Bowie?" "No, we have David Bowie at home" David Bowie at home:

Algumas pessoas dedicam a vida estudando exatas, artes, culinária e não sei mais oq. O produtor desse disco dedicou a vida à masterizar o fade out nas músicas.

Other than American Girl at the end, this seemed pretty generic and forgettable.

The lyrics are too forgettable and the music is too bland and Tom Petty doesn't even sound like Tom Petty, and then American Girl plays at the end to circumvent all of the above. I know happy endings are important, but this just feels like too much

Easy listening album that gets in and out quick. It would likely be good if on a nice sunny road trip with a cool breeze streaming in through the open window, not enough money for a sunroof, and homemade sammiches for a road side pit stop while the tunes keep playing.
