Reviews (page 6 of 12)

Very good. Live the have a Zeppelin like vibe. Keith Moon is a phenomenal drummer. It keeps sounding like it’s about to completely fall apart, but it doesn’t. I will go to Banana’s and find a copy of this

Classic! Love me a live album!

Great album with a collection of Who hits... Pinball Wizard my favorite.

Good quality recording. Listened to first disc of 40th anniversary edition. Still not a huge Who fan, but I appreciate them. Realized the singer from Comets on Fire sounds a lot like Roger Daltrey.

I like this one.

Great band & a solid album end to end, with some really fun takes on the hits. The guitar work was rockin. But today I have a bias against giving a live album a 5. I’m waffling a little on whether that’s fair or not.

Love The Who.

Great album

Really liked this one. Not usually a huge fan of live albums because I just want to hear the songs I know, and quite often the variations don't live up to my expectations. But I thought The Who really shone during this performance. You can really feel just how brash and chaotic Keith Moon's drumming sounds live, and that guitar RIPPED! You can tell that, at least at this point in their career, these guys really had some fantastic chemistry. Not only musically, but just listening to their banter you can tell they were happy to be on stage with each other. Never dove too deep into The Who, but always liked what I heard. This album definitely cemented for me their power and influence in the 60s/70s rock world. Could you imagine being a young musician and seeing this show!? You'd be filled with passion for your craft. At least I feel like I would. I second Tom...I just want to go to a damn show again.

A milestone in live albums history. You can feel the young energy and a confident band climbing his way to superstardom. Probably being there should had been all an experience

Buenos temarrales

I'm not a huge fan of the Who, but this is pretty good.

Good live album, but it’s a shame it was recorded before the great Who works of the 70s.

A fantastic live recording! Really captures the band's musicianship and synchronicity. Loved the long jams and changes to recorded versions - really added life, and makes me long for live shows again :/

Impressed. Such excellent live sound. Better than that Frampton album.

Ottima performance sotto tutti i punti di vista.

I've always loved The Who, and I'm glad to see this on the list. Today it fits my mood pretty perfectly, I'm still rather pissy about life events from yesterday and it feels good to rock out while I am making chicken katsu. I love the live versions of Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm a Boy, and A Quick One, While He's Away (even if it's originally performed live).

cool bit long

This album is full of classic rock tracks. There are some really good songs in here and the rest is still very good classic rock 4.5 out of 5 stars but I will round down for the ratings.

8/10 Absolute pure classic rock, I see why people call it the best live album of all time. Not quite my favourite though, even though classics like my generation are really good

4-4.5 stars. Great jams

Fantastico. Comprato su HDTracks

First time listening to The Who, so I'm unfamiliar with any of these songs except I Can't Explain. I don't think I was able to optimally enjoy this album, that being said this is a boatload of great classic rock. Amazing Journey/Sparks was definitely a highlight. 8/10 atm.

This was really awesome to hear, and I can’t imagine actually being there. They not only sounded great, but sounded like they were having fun with it too. The quality was excellent and given that live albums can sound really bad, that makes this even better.

A 15 min version of 'my generation' makes up about half of the album. So all in all, pretty awesome! Some nice raw sounding 70's rock. Apparently is is live recorded, which might give it an extra raw feel, but for the most part I didn't even notice it is a live album.

Pretty cool! Could use a bit more variety in tempo, instruments, tone and subjects for my taste. Final song was everything I ever wanted but the album as a whole was still a bit samey.

Great live show

Fedt live album. Nærmest bare en geatest hits 😊

The Who truly prove themselves to be one of the greats, while exceeding the studio quality of their songs with extravagantly raw live performances like the one on this album. I especially like Keith Moon's drumming.

Relisten

Like the previous The Who album on the list (Tommy) this one is fun rock'n'roll, but ultimately just doesn't draw me in. Fairly unremarkable, and it being live was more a detriment than a plus.

This is alright, and The Who are good But I'm rarely interested in live albums

Pre Listen: First album from the Who, joy. I used to really enjoy The Who, but since then, I don't know how to explain it, I've gotten really tired of their sound. This will be their first album I've listened to in full in probably a decade. Lowish expectations, especially since I normally dislike Live recordings, but hoping to find maybe I don't dislike them as much as I remember. Listening to the original 1970 release. Notable Tracks: Young Man Blues - Ridiculously ironic song considering their generation grew up to hoard wealth and give even less to the young people of today, by almost every conceivable metric of capital. Fuck boomers lol. Shaking All Over - One from my playlist back in the day. Nostalgic. My Generation - Another certified classic, and one from my playlist that I've since removed. I think the reason I grew so tired of this song is the aforementioned irony on how *their* generation grew into one of the most problematic, disagreeable ones of all time. Post Listen: For a Live recording, it sure had better sound quality than most of it's contemporaries. A very well behaved live audience, or everyone's really far from the stage. I didn't hate it, it is still music from a band I used to adore at the end of the day. They're just too worn out for me to really get invested in. Like an old pair of sneakers that you don't want to wear anymore, I'm tired of the Who. 3/5

I’m not fond of live albums as a concept but I’ll admit they sounded fantastic here. Added a few of the songs from the lineup (their studio versions). This does make me wish I saw them live during their farewell tour when I had the chance. Oh well.

It was a perfectly fine live album as far as they go, and I like me some live albums as well, only I don’t really enjoy The Who’s music as much to enjoy a live album of their discography. Apart from that, it was all good.

Ok live thing, end was nice. 5/10

I want to give it 4. I think it’s good. Just misses a 4.

Highlights: I Can’t Explain, Young Man Blues, Substitute, Happy Jack, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Summertime Blues. 3.6

I also am not a massive fan of the who or live albums but thought this was quite good. It had a nice vintage raw sound and was quite light on the crowd noise.

Ah, my nemesis, we meet at last, here you are – my least favourite album in my collection that I keep for “sentimental reasons” * – The Who – Live at Leeds – 3 STARS Playing side one, I will start off by saying that I am not the greatest fan of rock n roll. It feels like the dance music of its time, all that 12-bar blues can be a bit repetitive but done by the right people. i.e. the artists themselves, it can be vibrant. This just feels like poor cover versions to me. Then comes side two, I used to complain that Magic Bus feels like a 9-hour bartering session between two stoners about the titular “Magic Bus” (which in my head is always a Volkswagen minibus T2 painted purple with a daisy motif). But I have listened to it again and it is fantastic. So extra marks for this and My Generation. *One of the first albums I ever bought, found unironically in a bargain bin in Woolworths.

Not even the biggest Who fan, but this was great.

The Who is great, but again I feel like I don't need to hear so many live albums. The drumming was tight tho!!

classic but not my style

Decent album!

I'm not a huge fan of the Who, and outside of one song, I wasn't familiar with any of the songs on this album. I definitely appreciate the Who and while I've never seen them live, I can imagine that they were (and are) amazing live. And this album was recorded with the original line-up of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon. I don't think this album does a great job of capturing the vibe of what a live Who show probably was at the time. It sounds a bit overproduced - you can barely hear any crowd noise and there is very little talking by Daltrey to give it that "live" feel. It was fine to listen to, but nothing to make it memorable for me personally.

Reviewing this album poses a bit of a dilemma as the streaming version only included the remastered and expanded editions while I own the original much leaner vinyl. As usual more is less with Live at Leeds. The expanded edition includes a substantial amount of numbers from Tommy for the first two-thirds of the record. It also includes earlier Who material, such as “Happy Jack” and “Tattoo” that do not rank among my favorites, although any chance to hear “A Quick One While He Is Away” is a worthy addition. That song and “See Me, Feel Me”/”We’re Not Gonna Take It” theme from Tommy appear in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus and Woodstock respectively. Those versions are superior to the ones on the reissue. The Who sounds best when they bordered on chaos, whereas these renditions sound like a group that had played them for a year. In the Woodstock documentary when Roger Daltrey threw in an extra “heat” during “See Me, Feel Me” it seemed like a spontaneous ad lib of passion. It was disappointing to hear it again at Leeds, now reduced to a performance piece. The other songs from Tommy lack The Who’s energy. They thrive on lightning strikes and fists to the face, which the famed rock opera lacks. The original Live at Leeds eschews nearly anything to do with Tommy save a few choruses in the extended “My Generation” on Side Two. That version captured everything great about the group, and the song as it nearly blows up on stage. The first side featuring three covers and “Substitute” blazes as the songs all feature the youthful anger that The Who’s music attempted to obliterate. Obviously anniversary editions have to offer fans something new, but I found no undiscovered gems in the extra hour of material.

Too rocky, not my flavour, acquired taste, theek se sun v ni paya breh

Not sure why I needed to hear The Who covering a few songs and an extremely long version of My Generation, but I guess it’s fine. Pretty mid as far as live albums go, in my opinion. I’d gladly take Frampton Comes Alive, At San Quinton, Live After Death, A Real Live One, All The Worlds A Stage, or Exit Stage Left…just off the top of my head.

Live albums RARELY live up to a live show. And the sound here is not worth the time invested. Some iconic songs wrapped up in terrible packaging.

Fav song: Amazing Journey/Sparks

I've never listened to this album start-to-finish before. I'm listening to the 1995 edition which clocks in at about 77 minutes. I'm not against live albums, but my question is more like: Why _this_ live album? What is so special about this album that justifies it being on this list? It's not bad, but The Who performing this set of songs is just not terribly interesting.

C'est qui ça? 2.5 étoiles

Nie dla mnie. Nie lubię koncertówek

Some of the storytelling feels forced and just a little tacky. But The Who are a great band, and this is an enjoyable peek into their live prowess.

Not a Who fan, and this didn't do anything to make me one.

boring nowadays, few good songs

I'm sure it was fun to be there.

Enjoyed it, got some good tracks on here. Not a massive fan of bands reworking their best tunes live to keep them "fresh" but what can you do...

The most I’ve enjoyed a who album to date. Really liked how the drums are at the forefront of the mix on this live cut

Best The Who album on here so far, the sound was great.

Just OK IMO. Performances were very good, but with some exceptions the songs just have not stood the test of time.

I had to listen to this on YouTube as Spotify had the wrong tracks so I wasted some time. As for the album, it's a live album by The Who, not much to say about it, It was simply alright.

Good album

No more live albums!

It's okay, if you like live albums.

I like The Who but live albums ….

Day 5 Before: The first live album I'm getting on here. Haven't really listen to The Who much before, but sure seems intriguing. Wow. This is more my speed, I really enjoyed this one. What I like about Live albums is that the artist speaks in-between numbers and you get a feel about what humor they have and "get to know" them a bit more, then if they were just playing. Its also a great feel, they music I amazing and turns out I really like The Who. I get the feeling of actually being at the concert, the feel, the atmosphere, the crowd. Adds something extra to the tracks. Favorite(s): Substitute, I'm A Boy,

I actually went to Leeds uni and they had a plaque on the wall saying this album was recorded there. Never got round to listening to it tho, so this will be interesting. First song is class, a hard zeppelin-esque blues number with crazy drums abound. A bit rich telling a crowd of boomers that they don't have nothing in the world these days, but that's hindsight for you. Substitute is a neat little rendition. Summertime blues is a fun cover. I get the hype with Moon's drumming now, it's a really interesting setup, the melodic instruments are the rhythm and the drums are the lead, it works very well. It's like his beats are all solos. Shakin all over is pretty cool. This must have been a fun gig, everyone's firing on all cylinders so far. I've never been that into The Who but this is really good. Some bands just don't record very well and you need to see them live. Bass is excellent, he's got some really nice, busy lines. Really ties the songs together. The rhythm section here is so good. The guitar and vocals are fine but I'm not, like, blown away by them or anything. Rest of the album is pretty decent, once you've heard a few you've heard em all.

I usually don’t enjoy live albums, but Roger Daltry has an excellent voice and Keith Moon’s drumming is excellent. Pete Townsend’s guitar also sounds great. I could do without a break for the “a Quick one While He’s Away” story, but at least the banter and back and forth is amusing - good band chemistry. I could have done without the over 16 minutes of mash up towards the end. That’s a “need to be there” moment. Magic Bus was a good ending.

Not bad, one of those albums your dad would put on in the shed drinking beers with his mates

Sounds like a fun event, like the Who - I'm not sure that you need to put a live album on such a list if there are ALL the studio albums there as well...

Recognised a few of these, didn't mind it, bet it was good live.

I'll probably need to listen to this again at some point as I don't think I was in the right frame of mind to listen to this when I did. I enjoyed what I did here but it also didn't really blow me away. The 14-minute 'My Generation' is a standout.

Bit repetitive but good showmanship. Enjoyed it but wouldn’t be running back.

#394 / 1089 Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ This is a legendary live album. A fried, who is an accomplished recording and mixing engineer, calls this the best recorded album ever released (possibly referring to live albums, who knows). While I'm not the biggest fan of The Who, they do hit me in a good way. Few of their tracks are masterpieces I can listen to again and again. I don't think the reissue/remaster version I can listen to at Qobuz is the same I've heard on vinyl, there's more jokes and banter than I remember that seems to slow it down, but it's still enjoyable. strong 3/5

I like The Who but dislike the addition of live albums as part of the project. These tracks were fine but not something I haven’t found on the other 4 Who albums I had in the past. Overlong, mediocre snapshot of a great band. 2.5/5

As far as live albums go (which I generally detest) this one wasn't so bad. There's little of the crowd reaction/interaction that bug me so much. The music itself is good, but I've never been a big The Who fan. It falls squarely into the 3/5 range.

good live album, but only truly enjoyed the popular radio tunes; would have enjoyed more if a true Who follower.

é okay

I like it a lot but not the live versions

Good, if somewhat straightforward, versions of most the songs. Sounds like a really good bootleg. Other than the My Generation medley, I don't really hear anything other than just a good live performance of the song. It is really cool to hear Keith Moon do his thing.

I don’t mind The Who but still I only felt like listening to the original track list and it was fine. I’ve definitely heard a few of the other songs recorded at Leeds and I’m sure eventually I’ll listen to the rest.

I've never really understood the reverence for this album. It's merely ok for me. Townshend knows his way round a chord progression but his widdly widdly scree action is pretty lame. Their cover of Summertime Blues is fun but once you've heard the Blue Cheer version can you go back? They maul Shakin' All Over with Townshend taking liberties with the riff and mostly ignoring the tremelo chord on the chorus.

The difference between me, as someone who isn't massively fussed about The Who, and someone who is massively fussed about The Who, is that I've actually listened to this album.

Decent listen, not much else

Not walkable at all. Good rock.

It's whatever.

Good but not my favorite Who record

Highlights: Magic Bus, My Generation (medley). In a nutshell: the band approved bootleg. Nik Cohn of The New York Times declared Live At Leeds "the best live album of all time". That's only one opinion... The Who are notorious for being incredible live (especially in the 60s and 70s). This album captures the band's energy and improv skills. Sound quality is pretty good for 1970. Mixed well; can't tell if there are overdubs. I noticed that there was little audience noise, except for the applause after each track. If (journalist) David Hepworth is to be believed, the band and their crew decided not to place a mic in front of the audience. The advantage of this is that the listener becomes part of the crowd and the music is the focus. Smart move. The tracking is what's stopping me from adding an extra star. Peter Townsend decided to cut a single LP release (which was a sensible decision) instead of the intended double album. I would have swapped one of the cover versions for an album track. Overall: 6/10

I don't know, dude - it's a live album. It's weird that it's here. And it's not even something like Frampton Comes Alive, which is pretty much the definitive version of those songs. It's just like, hey, y'all like The Who? Great, here's an oddly low-energy, extremely British show. Not sure why it's here. And I like The Who! 2.5 rounded up.

I used to be a lot more into The Who than now due to my parents' influence. Nowadays I think they're generally good, but nothing I ever really go out of my way to listen to. As far as this album goes, there were a few songs I enjoyed and a bunch I'd never heard before that didn't do much, but that last 20 or so minutes was a bit of a slog.

Quite nice, but nothing special to me, nothing really standing out

I don't think live albums should be included in this list. We know these guys are talented musicians and put on a bombastic show, but the records that should be considered for this project should be the studio albums that created waves. The Who already have 3 landmark albums on this list, why do we need to throw in a live album on top of that?

may have been slightly harsh upon listening not the worst i could actually get behind this 7/10

Got a bit repetitive but overall pretty fun to listen too and some actually good songs on there

Live disc

Some good stuff but kinda blended together. Nothing really amazing

It was alright idk

Not a fan of Live albums at all so I made a point of checking the track listing on the Wiki page before I started the album, and I'm glad I did, because it reduced this one down to a much more manageable set. As far as Live albums go, this one was actually pretty good; it was well recorded and it didn't include much filler-nonsense or minutes of crowd screaming/interaction that I don't really understand listening to multiple times as part of an album. There's interactions referenced in other reviews that I guess were in the extended version of the album, so I'd probably have disliked that, but the original 1970 track listing was actually pretty lean. Music-wise, this album was actually pretty great. Would have been a 4 if it weren't a Live album, but dropping to a 3 for the Live-ness and the slightly OTT musical wankery (which I also attribute to the Live-ness) - it wasn't egregious though.

OK but not bowled over maybe a bit dated

I'm surprised by all the comments on here saying live albums shouldn't be included. Maybe that's a generational perspective? As a Gen X'er, growing up there were many live albums that were considered iconic - including this one. Seems perfectly appropriate for them to be on the list. I love the Who, but Live at Leeds actually isn't one of my favorites - I do personally prefer the studio cuts. But the best part of this album is Keith Moon. His drums are much more forward in the recording than they are on the studio albums, and they are just monstrous here.

I would agree that live albums are a bit meh unless it's by your favourite artist. But I see why this is on the list. It's pretty good on it's own.

Not a mega fan of live albums but this was alright

Not bad. I’m not a huge Who fan

Considering I absolutely HATED Tommy, this is pretty good. Reminds you that they were, fundamentally, a great rock band. The between song chat is nice enough, and it does give you that great feeling of being there. That said, some bits have not aged well at all, and the lengthy intro to A Quick One is capital N NOT GOOD. Probably a 4, dropped to a 3 just because that left such a sour taste in the mouth.

Another record that I heard a lot of at the time but didn't have a copy of because I wasn't very interested in The Who. Blistering, relentless blues rock with lots of jamming noodling guitar stuff. The best part of it is the breakdown with great drumming at the end of the 15-minute track that begins with "My Generation." I still prefer other bands from the period, and am frankly tired of hearing about my generation. But if you're going to listen to The Who, I figure you should be listening to this. 3

Feel insanely mixed about this album because I do actually really enjoy the music but all the live albumness of it all is so irritating! Every song is way too long, the yapping is so annoying, the audience is also so annoying but luckily you can't hear them during the actual songs. Even though I legit enjoyed the music I was so ready for this album to be over! Every time I've felt like that about an album so far I've given it a 2 but that just doesn't feel right because I think I like The Who 😭 I'm gonna do 3 for now and try to listen to the ACTUAL real original release and maybe change it later

It should get a 4 from the original mixing but I'm knocking it down to a 3. It is difficult to really grant this higher imo because of the mixing. Instrumentals are legendary but vocals are washed and inclusion of bonus songs doesn't do it favors.

great musicianship here, excited to get to some studio albums. i despise how the record label has added more and more bloat to this over the years, the actual original tracklist really hits but the additions just draaaag things out (why is there so much pre-song yapping too?). the original cut should be rated higher but since i’m so pissed about the label making that cut so hard to experience its a 3.

Ihan jees. The Who ei ainakaan ole vielä mikään lempibändi. 3/5.

#913. I'm sure this would have been plenty of fun if you were there. But I wasn't there, I was here. 3/5: acceptable

classic british rock. It's ok

Great energy, to long.

The WHO are great, there were some great songs, but live albums shouldn’t be on the list unless it’s for some Wild memorable performance or shift to a song that makes it a true unforgettable classic

Fun, but not a revolutionary live album.

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue. funnier banter though

"Tommy" was one of the first CDs I ever purchased, but despite that, I haven't listened to much of The Who. They sound fantastic live, and you can really see their musicianship in all the covers and the variety of genres their own music spans.

Pretty good. The 2d half stands out in comparison to the first part. The Who are maybe my east favorite of the big 4 Invasion bands.

I can't listen to this much The Who

No me llamo mucho 5/10

This was a fine live recording, that I enjoyed more than I thought I would, but I wasn’t attached to any of the songs/neglected to dig much deeper.

Favorite: My Generation

It’s not my fav one, but I have to say is technically a very smart and solid production even when is a live album. In general great sound.

Old Rock and roll not too my vibe but was alright to listen to

Love the Who, but I think they miss some of their hits on this live album, I like the energy on it. 1. A Quick One, While He's Away 2. My Generation 3. Substitute

Highlights: Heaven and Hell, Young Man Blues, Substitute, Shakin' All Over This is a take on the 25th anniversary edition since I couldn't be bothered to arrange the tracklist to fit the original release. I'm not familiar with their discography, but they sound great live. I enjoyed this live record and now I'm a bit more interested in the studio versions. It was a bit more rock than what I expected (don't know why). At moments it sounded like a playful early Led Zeppelin.

Not bad, but not feeling it

pretty good fav song: Tattoo

Sounds great … but tend to agree with others that live albums are kinda cheating

The thing about The Who is that they have a handful of great songs and a lot of dross. This fact is illustrated vividly in a live album.

Given my disappointment for albums by The Who, a live album was a chance to hear more of a best of selection. Unfortunately, some of my favourite Who songs weren’t present, since they hadn’t been released yet. Nonetheless, there was far more to enjoy here as they let loose with drawn out guitar jams. Still, over the course of the album, it didn’t hold my attention quite so well, particularly because of crowd engagement and telling stories.

There are bits of this that are excellent - the My Generation medley, for example, and Substitute - but also a few bits that are lumpen and stodgy - like Summertime Blues. A solidly high three overall.

Live albums don't really do much for me, and this one is no exception. Keith Moon is a monster on the drums.

This has long been billed as an amazing and seminal live album, and it's...fine? To be clear, the Who were four fantastic performers at the top of their game, and this is an energetic performance with no major mistakes. But it's short (6 songs, half of them covers), and any audience noise is mostly absent, so it kinda feels like the band just jamming for half an hour or so. They jam well, and the energy is high, but none of this is particularly Earth-shattering for me.

classic rock evokes the same feeling as country music does for me, this does nothing for me though not bad music, seems like it was a great show live. this objectively a great live performance

Ok - it's official I'm not a Who fan.

3.5, i'm not really a fan of the who but i thought this was recorded/produced really well, some cool medleys on here too

the who does not remind me of a happy point in my life so i believe i hold some animosity against them without ever listening to their music. can respect it but not something i’d really play

Dikke priem

Wow, this sure is a 2 and a half hour long live album from The Who!!

More British music, The Who has a few albums that should be on this list, why would you pick this one? MI6 you win again!

I was underwhelmed. I like The Who, but most of my favorite songs by them are not on this album and the whole live album seemed fairly subdued

Live albums already confuse me about their inclusions, even weirder to include one of a band that already have 4 other studio albums included to the list. Not saying the music is bad, Live At Leeds is just an unnecessary and a bit of a wasted pick

Live at Leeds deserves its reputation as a showcase of raw, four-piece rock power. The Who in 1970 were a genuinely fearsome live band, and this record captures that without embellishment — no orchestration, no studio polish, just Moon, Entwistle, Townshend, and Daltrey playing like they have something to prove in a university refectory. The chemistry is real, and the musicianship is impossible to question. The My Generation medley that closes the original six-track release is the highlight — an extended, shape-shifting piece where the band’s interplay is at its most compelling. Entwistle’s bass work throughout deserves special mention; he plays with an aggression and melodic independence that most bass players wouldn’t attempt underneath this much noise. But for all the craft on display, the emotional connection never fully arrived. The Who occupy a specific corner of rock history that I respect more than I inhabit, and a live record lives or dies on that relationship. The performances are extraordinary by any measure — yet extraordinary playing in a language that isn’t quite your own still keeps you at a certain distance. Compare this to Cash at San Quentin or Van Morrison with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra, where the artist’s world and your world are the same world, and the gap becomes clear. A three that fully acknowledges the greatness on display — just not greatness that lands as personal.

Well recorded and a fun listen.

The great thing about a live album is the improvisations absent in a more controlled studio environment, and The Who are great improvisors. However, I am not too sure if The Who really add much value to the original tracks, where the snappy "bite" of songs like My Generation and Magic Bus was so much of their appeal.

It was a fun listen, I don't generally love the sound of live albums. But it's not bad. The drums and guitar are nice and forward, vocals are pretty clean. I could live without the creepy story of the girl guide and the engine driver, pretty weird. I didn't love Tommy, and I don't really love this.

I never really cared for The Who, no matter how hard I tried, and I couldn't even tell you why. I generally don't really care for live albums as well, with a couple of honourable exceptions. The combination did not manage to exceed my expectations.

Enjoyable, but not repeatable for me.

It's a live rock album from the 70's. The band is good. (Most of) the songs are good. I'm sure the concert was great. But the quality of the recording makes it better as a historical artifact than a good album. The studio recordings are far more enjoyable to listen to.

So this is fine. Unfortunately - I had piecemeal a playlist of this together because the only versions of this I could find were much longer then the original album (which is really all I wanted to listen to). Maybe if I could have heard the original I would have rated it higher - who knows.

i’m not a huge fan of live music recordings most of the time so i think this wasn’t totally my cup of tea. i think the vocals were pretty good though!! idk it was decent, just not my favorite my favorite song was young man’s blues

More very influential music that is maybe just not very interesting to listen to now. Keith Moon goes off though.

As others have mentioned, I'm unsure why this is included in this list. It's one that I own a physical copy of and do enjoy (I also found the digital mix actually sounds much better than my LP) but don't understand why the creator of this list thought a general audience must listen to this before they die. My only assumption is that The Who are fantastic performers and were known for there over the top antics (smashing guitars and drum kits) so with a project that focuses so much on listening, the participant is given a chance to hear the energy this band brought to this stage. It's certainly there and certainly felt on every listen. 3.5 stars.

After picking out the original 6 tracks from the inevitable extended edition on Spotify, I have to say I enjoy the raw sound. I still haven't found a Who record that really sucks me in though.

- Very effective and traditional rock and roll - The live recording aspect surprisingly does little to tie the songs together - Good album, but would I not just listen to the official recordings of the songs? - Liked 'Substitute' and 'A Quick One, While He's Away', because it does benefit from the album's format

I enjoyed this album. I especially liked Heaven and Hell and Tattoo. I don’t tend to listen to tracks from live performances if there’s a studio version and I probably won’t revisit the rest of the songs, hence the 3 rating, but it was nice to have in the background.

A really polished live performance by a group of undeniably talented musicians, I don’t really have anything bad to say about it and it’s a fairly enjoyable listen. Unfortunately, for whatever reason it doesn’t really grab me, it has a same-y feel to it. I don’t think it helps that the crowd are so muted, that came across a bit strange? Think it’s my loss.

Nunca había escuchado un disco en vivo de The Who. Buen descubrimiento.

Incredible production for a live album, there's simply no way it sounded this good in person so how did they do it? Very glad this one wasn't 2 hours long as the deluxe edition lead me to believe, mad that half the runtime is just My Generation

Yeah this is a good fun album, possibly would've enjoyed it more actually hearing it live Only had the chance to give this one listen through so I might come back to it at some point 3

A performance from a band at the peak of their powers that’s probably a great one for fans, but didn’t feel significant enough for more than 3* as someone less familiar. The band are very affable during the gig, adding some great colour to the performance, and everything is well performed. But the wider importance probably goes over my head- I read that this is a slightly rockier style than their recorded output of the time, but as someone less familiar with the band that was lost on me. Similarly, long versions of some songs might be a unique plus for a fan, but lost my interest after a while.

I was working outside and it made the day go pretty quickly

You only need to listen to one track to realise that Entwistle and Moon were the best rhythm section in rock and roll. It's cool to hear them live, but you'd just rather listen to a studio album.

Pretty solid live record, if anything to me a bit underwhelming considering its reputation

3 - decent

I’m sure this would have been great to be at. Unfortunately I’m not I’m listening to it while plowing through spreadsheets so that’s gonna dent it a bit.

Only listened to the original track listing which brought this down to 35 mins. I’m not a fan of live albums, you cannot replicate being there in person. But The Who sound very good in this, and makes me wish I was alive to see that period of live music

I was fake and didn't listen to the full album....... good album, prob high 3s, fun energy w live crowd and the who is a classic

it's been a few years but - I've never like TheWho with a very few exception. They always sounds angry - and I don't listen to music to feel negative emotion

Didn’t listen to it this time around, but I had it on CD years ago. I remember it not really resonating with me like other classic rock of the period. I’ll revisit it.

p209. 1970. 3 stars. As a reminder of what a great live act The Who were, and why Pete Townsend has his place in the pantheon of guitar heroes: 5 stars As an isolated listening experience: too much filler, redundant covers, and the usual 70s wankage of extended workouts. And it's a live album, and I don't enjoy most live albums.

The Who is fucking ripping on this album. Absolute powerhouse of a performance by Keith Moon and they're practically inventing punk rock on the spot for some of these jams

Great live band, great live album though it does all sound a bit dated.

I shouldn’t have to read the original track list and skip around the extended edition just to listen to the way the album was originally released. Fucking stupid. Anyway. It’s fine. It’s a live Who album. I think if you were alive in 1970 when it came out nothing would’ve sounded like it. As someone who has been to punk shows and had my ears blown out noise doesn’t really impress me. I like the medley, that’s always a nice thing about live shows.

Tons of energy and some great playing, but I just find myself enjoying Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead more if I’m going with late 60s live rock music. Picking this live album just seems like an odd choice for the list. It doesn’t seem instrumental to the classic rock zeitgeist.

Very fun energy, The Who sound way better in this live album than anything else I’ve heard from them.

Would be great if the sound quality wasn't so bad.

Review - listened to the deluxe version by accident. Good live performance and an ok life recording (I'm sure it was impressive for the time). Maybe the original is more immediate, deluxe edition is twice as long. Fun bit of history and a decent listen. Rating - 6/10 Need to listen? YES

eita outro album ao vivo okayyy FAVS (top 3): i cant explain, young man blues, a quick one while hes away mençoes honrosas: heaven and hell, fortune teller, im a boy, amazing jouney / sparks um bom rockzinho ao vivo, nao gostei q deixaram as conversinhas do show nas tracks, tipo é um album ao vivo ate faz sentido ter mas eu nao gosto!! nota final: 3/5

I was first initiated into this album at 2am at full volume by the bloke who lived in the flat above me at university in 1979. He was called Joe and had wild hair but that's not important right now. I have to concede it's a great sound although I have not yet fully recovered from my introduction to it.

This sounds very decent for a live recording, and Substitute is fun, but nothing you can do will make me like the Who!!!!! Go away the Who!!!!

Starts out strong but peters out and gets tiresome 3.4

Coldplay left me well, cold

That sure was The Who, live, at Leeds

I really don't see the point of all these live albums on the list.

In Summe 3 Sterne.

4 stars for the drummer though

I’m almost never excited when the first album I have to experience from an artist is a live one. There are rare exceptions to the rule, but that sentiment certainly rang true here – it would have been nice to hear at least a few of the Who's studio recordings (beyond "Who Are You" and "My Generation") before diving into this this thing, but I suppose that's the unfortunate side effect of taking on this challenge in random order. Real quick, I'll note that I listened to Live at Leeds in a pretty unorthodox way – I knew going into it that the original LP only had six tracks, but I didn't realize that the first four tracks on the Expanded Edition weren't included in that six until I was already a few tracks deep, so I ended up just skipping everything in between "Substitute" and "Summertime Blues" to (at least somewhat) keep the flow of the original release. My completionist brain felt odd cutting out a major chunk of the live recording, but I honestly thought "Young Man Blues" made for a better album opener than "Heaven and Hell" and I wasn't enjoying the first leg enough to bother listening to the extra 23.5 minutes of music. I can't say I really regret taking that route because the six tracks on the original recording actually do made for a pretty solid listen. That said, I did like "Young Man Blues" a fair bit, but Side B is really where Live at Leeds shines the brightest. The 15+ minute version of "My Generation" cranks up Roger Daltrey's vocal stutter to deliciously obscene levels and has a pretty insane climax around the 13-minute mark, then "Magic Bus" continues that energy with a near-flawless ending to the album. Side A was fine and I didn't love every single movement of Side B, but I can totally understand how someone could hear Live at Leeds conclude in that fashion and think "yeah, this one is a must-listen album." This one's a three for me, but I'm looking forward to digging into the Who's studio discography! Highlights: Young Man Blues, My Generation, Magic Bus

3 star - live album

Loved Amazing Journey and generally huge fan of Keith Moon’s work here but still has a lot of the shallow youth counterculture stuff that has bored me on all their albums

Decent

Live At Leeds shows The Who as a thunderous juggernaut of a live act. If the purpose of this release was to convince listeners to go out and catch the band when they come to their town, then I'm sure this album was a roaring success. This is a fairly faithful document of the band's live show at the time, with only minimal studio touch-ups. The band play fantastically on here. Full of bluesy energy, the band storm through three covers and three original songs on the original release (including a 15 minute extended version of 'My Generation'). I do question if this is an essential listen to all music fans, although it is essential to Who fans. While this set the standard to how good live records could sound, I think I would always pick the original studio versions over the frantic live renditions found on here.

Great songs. A little too long and too much talking.

The Who are legends, but this album is best enjoyed by the most ardent fans... not the casual listener.

Ehhhh slay low key

So… doesn’t a live album kinda go against the whole “no greatest hits albums” rule? Just asking because my listener pick may be a greatest hits album if I think I can get away with it. Filing this album away in my mind as evidence. These guys sure can play the guitar! Also has some very famous hits. Not my preferred musical genre, but very good example of classic rock.

Fine. Ok instrumental, sometimes terrible vocals, sometimes good vocals. Yup. 3

I guess it was ok because it was a short best of

Hay mejores

So I listened to the expanded edition because it was the only version on Spotify. Pretty good I thought, then I checked which songs were on the original album out of interest. Only 6 songs! 35 mins! Half are covers! Basically if they just selected the tracklist better this would be a solid 4/5. Also Keith moon is an absolute beast on the drums.

It’s The Who and they are live. If you like The Who, this is them, in live form.

i thought i would like it more than i did, it's not bad but it just feels okay

Young Man Blues - 3.5/5 Substitute - 3/5 Summertime Blues - 3/5 Shakin' All Over - 3/5 My Generation - 4/5 The Magic Bus - 4/5 I thankfully saved myself some time by just listening to the vinyl release tracks because these were a bunch of "eh" songs propped up by a great performance by the band themselves. Mid score because of that. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: My Generation, The Magic Bus

I usually love live albums but wasn’t feeling this one. It isn’t a patch on “live and dangerous.” Turns out I’m not a massive fan of the who. Much of it hasn’t aged well either.

really really struggled with this one 😭 maybe i’ll come back to it one day

too silly?

Mostly Tommy. Successfully Intended to show they are a rock band. Great musicians....Moon Entwhistle, Daltry and Townsend.

Guys, I don’t know what it is about these live albums. This one had everything going for it yet somehow I felt less musically educated by the end. I think it had to be something about the form itself. It’s almost a kind of pornography to me, a genre that promises intimacy but in the end just reminds you of an experience you aren’t actually having. I don’t want to hear other people root for an encore fifty years ago. The one love album I’ve gotten that I could relate with to was the Dylan “Royal Albert Hall” one, but that’s because I processed it as the historian I once aspired to be. For the rest I just feel like answering “no opinion.” It all gets me a little down, looking forward to what’s next.

Objectively good music just not my thing

It’s a competent live album. But is it essential? It’s hard to see why it would be. The studio albums offer more pristine versions of the songs, and there’s little transcendent about the live experience here.

This surprised me a bit, I quite enjoyed it, or at least bits of it.

For a live album this is quite solid but I find it hard to enjoy a live album of music I’ve never heard before. This was not bad and a few tracks were great but mostly felt like generic rock. However, the standout songs were really great and show off that The Who is an incredible and individual band that I don’t listen to enough of.

Not bad. Don't really enjoy live albums, but nice to have something different in that regard I suppose.

Fedt nok :))

I recognize the skill and impact, but it’s not my thing

The weird experimental songs that have plagued previous who albums are missing here, which is good… the ceiling just really isn’t there either. It’s fine

Definitely at it's best when Pete Townsend and Keith Moon take the lead. The crunch of Pete Townsend live makes a decent difference. Overall, not the strongest live concert though, maybe more of a statement on the Who's catalogue than the talent/stage presence.

It's fine rock but I'm generally not a fan of live albums.

This has been an interesting one as I listened to the extended version and in places it’s baggy and indulgent all the things I don’t like about live albums but at its best it’s a rush of pure energy driven by the best rhythm section ever. The original track listing is probably the way to go but there’s lots to enjoy

Honestly quite pleasantly surprised! There wasn’t a standout song for me as the whole album was pretty solid! 7/10

I'm not always a fan of live recorded music, and this was no exception. Overall, meh.

Sorry I have no taste and like the commercial stuff better I feel like this would have been great to be at

Cool, great band, great music, watched them live in Japan once. Fantastic. I never, though, feel like popping up their music. If it starts, cool, but never on purpose.

It's The Who - I prefer a studio album to be honest - but it is The Who - classic.

At first I thought Keith Moon was a heckler in the crowd and found it pretty annoying, it still might be but I came to the conclusion it was probably Keith moon talking. Either way, this truly felt like being at the concert, alright set list but would prefer their actual albums

This is fine. Nothing to get me super excited, though unlike some it seems, I don't mind a solid live album on the list. I like the crowd interaction on this, but don't get blown away by the performances themselves.

this was okay, don’t have much of an opinion on this one

It was okay, I enjoy some of their other music more than this

Sure why not. It’s fine but I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if it wasn’t the live version

first impressions: it’s 1 hour 14 mins long… 14 songs that’s a bit much actually i don’t hate it the melodies themselves r quite nice very rock, i just dont like the leads singer voice that much… notable mentions: young man blues (liked the soul and spunk of it), amazing journey (just a good jammy song),

70s rock

Need to listen closely over the weekend but was liking the guitar licks not so much the commentary.

Really great live album. It feels like I’m in the concert I love the energy and the sound it shows off. This is The Who showing their best performances in my opinion!

Not for me. I don't like live albums

It’s not an album I would choose to listen to but it was alright

I cannot take a live album on this list! It's a poor quality compilation! I like The Who, but I'd rather just listen to their studio albums

Personally not a big fan of live albums (crowd noise and long bits of talking detract from the music)

Some of their best fun songs but I prefer Their studio albums

I enjoyed listening to this! Definitely reminded me of a very particular era of my own listening. Good set, well executed. I don't feel compelled to revisit too regularly, but it was a good listen.

Perfectly dated, for being back in my hometown.

Sounds samey, wouldn't mind listening to this, not that much though don't complement yourself

ehh. the songs are very much background music and nothing else

Let me start with I love The Who, Keith Moon is a top 5 drummer of all time (and he ain't 5), Roger Daltrey is a top 5 front man of all time, and (evidently unlike many of my fellow reviewers) I'm not mad at a live album. All that said, this isn't great. I know it was recorded at Leeds specifically for a live album and sound quality - and it still sucks in that category. The between-song banter is effectively inaudible, and it's very short for a concert at only 6 songs and 30+ minutes. On the bright side, it's The Who and we get five of their absolute bangers. It's the first post-Tommy release, and it must have been reassuring at the time to know that The Who was still The Who. Influence 3. Hits 4. Quality 2. Intangibles 3. It's still The Who 3.

Love The Who, but nothing special about this love album

unfortunately the who will always be just a little bit boring to me 💔💔 but i do love substitute of course

Better than I was expecting says local musician who's been shit kicking for 20 years.

Niet helemaal fan van de live versie

like mid. didn't LOVE but didn't hate it.

Not my favorite Who recording, but a good job of bridging the music they came from to where they went

Mixed bag. Some good, some boring.

One thing's for sure: The Who knows how to rock. I feel like this isn't the most interesting or particularly gripping album, and the fact that it's live (and perhaps a little bit rough around the edges) doesn't help. But at the end of the day, it's a lot of fun, and the musicianship is there. The freaking 11 minute jam on My Generation is proof enough of that. Fave tracks: - Fortune Teller - Young Man Blues - Summertime Blues - Shakin' All Over - Magic Bus

Decent, but there was no way I was listening to 4 records.

Good songs ,prefer non live albums

Listens: 1.9 Standout Tracks: Tattoo, My Generation I barely got in two listens. I didnt really digest this album. It seemed kind of quiet (probably because its not a studio album). It also seemed sort of intimate, like Nirvana's MTV album, but i don't know anything about Leeds venue to determine if that's actually true. The only other album I've heard by them is their debut album, and I rated that a 3, and also noted that I found the studio version of My Generation to also be a standout track. This is also a 3.

Great album. Love the band. A touch long and I don’t have the enthusiasm for some of their deeper cuts to really get into it but it’s still pretty ace.

For me, it wasn't spectacular. I listened to the original track listing.

It’s not fair reviewing an album 40 years after it happens, especially when it comes to “classic” “hard” rock. In the past this live rendition of the first run of a classic band was long seen as one of the best live albums. And I am willing to allow The Who as somewhat of an innovative band back then. But today, to me at least, it all just sounds old and it doesn’t hold up when compared to other classic acts that deviated more from the meat and potatoes rock. Highlight: Tattoo, My Generation (but without the grueling medley) After all the talk about music, the cover is amazing.

For a Who album, this is pretty good, but if you’re having to select a live best of selection as an essential listen, that doesn’t really say much for their studio output

Rock n roll

I like The Who, and it's a decent album, but i'm not sure if I think a live album is epic enough to include in the 1001 list!

Okay not a big fan on live albums

Glad to hear what Todd Margaret used to listen with his late dad every Sunday, you know, in Leeds...
