Reviews (page 5 of 12)

I actually liked this one more than the previous The Who album.

idk its good

Enjoyable. No further notes.

I still don't think live albums belong on the list, but this is probably the best of them.

- Typical The Who, but typical The Who is pretty damn solid. Energetic, fun, and just a little bit heavy with the guitar. - This would have been awesome to see live.

The original six tracks are a possible 5, but if you listen to the whole concert, it is possibly 3. I enjoyed The Who for the first time.

Tattoo is my new favorite song… its just satisfying to listen to

This album stands as a great showcase for each member of the Who-- each a master of their craft in their own right. Tonally, every facet of their personality is on display from their whimsy in Happy Jack, Substitute, Magic Bus to their ferocity in Young Man Blues and My Generation.

Great music. Wish there was less chatter.

Wow pretty god album. #75

Ég er með pínulitla fordóma fyrir tónleikaupptökum þegar ég veit að það eru tónleikaupptökur en svo þegar ég hlusta á tónlistarupptökur eða er ekki að pæla í því þá skemmti ég mér konunglega og það var ákkúrat þannig með Live At Leeds. Þetta eru tónleikar sem ég hefði viljað vera á. Gott stöff sem ég er alveg líklegur til að setja aftur á ef ég kemst yfir fordómana mína.

The heavier sounding songs sound great, and its hard not to be amazed with Townsend's mastery of the guitar creating a melodic soundscape that requires such varied technique and adaptation live.

Live, greatest hits….of course its good. 4/5

first listen great live who album

It’s a good album that showcase why the Who were such a good live band 4 stars

Interesting listen.

Great album. Love the expanded version.

Now I understand why this is so highly regarded live album. I hadn’t heard such a hard rock The Who earlier.

Frickin rocks.

Others pending that have pleasantly surprised me!

Something so pure about this era of The Who. No frills, no prog production bullshit, just absolute rockers.

Don’t tend to like live albums and I also don’t know The Who much deeper than Who’s Next and the singles, so I’ve never given this a go til now. But it was a lot of fun with a number of really strong live takes. The medleys and jams are great, take a lot of these songs to the next level and they have some good patter with the crowd.

Great stuff…heard a rumor some years ago that the show in Hull the next night is considered by some to be even better…hard to imagine

Once upon a time I would have said this is one of the greatest live album ever. But I haven't listened in a few years. Listening again, I'm giving this four stars. It's still very good, but ultimately, The Who are a very good, but not truly great band. I've bought some of their albums. I've even been to a concert. Who's Next is amazing, but this is before that, and the rest of their albums are simply good, not great. The energy and raw power of this performance is very good, however, and the songs are still good, so 4 stars.

Great album from a great band

Live guitars are great

This was absolutely explosive. Even though there was some unnecessary jamming, I could tell that they were just full of energy and locked in together

What a show this must've been. Never heard this album but felt like I knew it. Keith Moon was unreal.

Very good. 4.5

Great one

sure plays a mean guitar

The Who is a band I have always liked. The problem with "like" is it is not "love." I am not a fan-girl. Just I like them, I will generally tune in if something of theirs happens to be on the radio or in a store somewhere. The biggest problem here though, is not with liking or loving or a willingness to listen. It is that I am 100% sure if someone were there, in Leeds, this would have been an absolute life memory. But with no visuals but an album cover and crappy speakers... the (likely epic) 2 hour runtime just became a chore... So this amazing and worthy show by an A class band just doesn't translate well in our watered down digital age. At any rate, great band, poured their hearts out for their fans... Yeah!

Nice entry

Not a fan of the who but this is good stuff

I can only find the expanded version, which I do think is pretty good, but I have to imagine that the impact of the original single album version was greater when it was first released. I don’t think it quite stands out against other live albums on this list, I don’t think I’m going to be returning to it with the frequency I do James Brown At The Apollo, Johnny Cash’s Prison Recordings, or Live And Dangerous. But it’s still a fun listen, I was never bored during the hour and 15 minutes

I did not know that Roger was so engaging with the crowd. His voice sounded good back then live. I always knew Peter was good on guitar but he really goes off live. Moon is great on percussion and bass is solid as well. Despite 17 minutes of My Generation, this is a very good live album. Magic bus was a great send off.

Enjoyed this album. Having a live album allows you to get a feel for the band more.

The Who are a wildly skilled band. Even just listening to the drums alone on each song is great. Good live album. Very tight all around. It's almost unreal that this recording isn't from a studio.

7/10. Need to give it a better listen through but good vibes in the background.

Pretty good, Happy Jack is a great song

Pristine performance Too much chit chat in between But good enough though

A great document of the energy this band had in its prime. Sounds like a lot of fun to be there.

This album has reinvigorated my appreciation for The Who. Their rhythm section is awesome. Keith Moon is so much fun to listen to on drums. He steals the show on a lot of these songs. The live setting lets them really rip. Sometimes (like on the silly story suite “A Quick One, While He’s Away”) The Who can focus too much on concepts and ideas. But here, in front of a live crowd, roll n roll is mostly the focus and they play pretty hard. This is probably the only time I’ve heard them tip into heavy metal territory. The final minutes of the “My Generation” suite get nice and heavy!

It's good, it's got a lot of good energy. Fun listen. Keith Moon is the real star of this one, it's like he was just this powerhouse of force behind the kit and it makes the energy go through the roof!

Its the Who. Its bound to be good

I generally find live albums quite enjoyable (I know it’s not common sentiment) and this one was no exception.

Very good.

Mostly Instrumental, interesting

The raw power of the original 4 lineup with the whimsy and quirk, and a medley of everything they have ever done up to this point.

What an album

Great performance with a good medley to boot. Extended versions also worth a listen

Good stuff

Probably one of the best live performances recorded ever. Bit long tho. 4 stars.

A highlight from the long-lost era of great live albums. The covers are fire in this! John Entwistle's bass never sounded better.

Wont get fooled again

Very clean sound for a live album. Shocking that it's their only live album with the full lineup. Nearly 15-minute version of My Generation? That's the stuff...

How can you not like The Who? Everything that makes them great is on display in this album. Still, I’m not sure there’s too much that makes this live album better than any of their studio albums. But it’s nice to hear the banter. Keith Moon’s drums sound terrible.

The Who at their best. I listened to the original album which only contains 6 songs including 3 covers and a 15-minute version of “My Generation” with some awesome jam elements. I also listened to some sort of super deluxe version which I believe contains the whole concert, a little over 2 hours long, which includes a full performance of the album Tommy and a considerable amount of banter between songs. My favorite bit of banter is Daltrey narrating what the lyrics describe in “A Quick One, While He’s Away”. It’s interesting to me what they chose to release on the original LP of Live at Leeds. They could have easily made it a double album and included bits of Tommy or perhaps some other amazing live songs like “A Quick One” or “Happy Jack”. Still a great live album, but surprisingly I prefer the full live set to the condensed 37-minute version.

Hard rockin 60s goodness

One of a handful of greatest live recordings. Wish they had put more of it down on this pressing. The My Generation medley is one track I pick the needle up and move back for a replay.

Legendary live show turns out to be less amazing than you'd expect. Despite the band being on sensational form, and the recording quality is impeccable, the song selection seems a bit strange - lots of vintage rock and roll and not enough Who bangers. Magic Bus though

The Who at their best....

I like!

Really good album and well mixed for a live album. The Who isn't my favorite, but I really enjoyed this.

I've heard great things so I wanted to LOVE it. The first half disappointed me but then I started appreciating how much it rocks. After listening to it all the way through I gave the first half another chance. Still not loving it but still a really good album. I would like to give it 3.5 stars so I'm rounding up to 4.

The original LP is a good selection

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Heaven and hell, Tattoo, I’m a boy, Shakin’ all over, My generation

Enjoyed that.

It's a long concert full of energy and long guitar solos. This is because it was the psychedelic era but not necessarily The Who made psychedelic rock. Their style was very characteristic and thanks to them, multiple rock genres like hard rock evolved to something more.

energetic, not distracting for a live album, still easy to listen to

It’s insane how good they sound live…

I’ve listened to this before and typically hate live albums. Not this one. The sound mixing was good except during the exposition and it was easy to be transported into another space.

A really great album. Just very long. I did enjoy most of it, a lot!

Thank You!

Of it’s time. Great to hear Keith Moon giving it his best. I think you have to have been there. I think the digital versions lose a bit of the magic.

When I saw this album come up , I thought "Oh, great. More pub operas." But the Who has always sounded best to me when they're not so serious and this definitely fits the bill. Plus they're really good -- this was a good show. I had a great time listening. I wish there was less sanctimony around these live albums so that some of it could be cleaned up a bit. Even something as simple as leveling out the chatter in between songs so that I'm not turning the volume up and down all the time.

I love live albums. This one is pretty raw. The Who were at the top of their game here. In the wake of Tommy, The Who were really working on their live sound and wanted to put out a live record. Unfortunately, I don't think the tracklist on here was the best choice. We don't really see any Tommy tracks, and 3 of the songs are covers. However, this is still an explosive live performance. Keith Moon is absolutely insane on the drums.

Great, rocks hard, better than the studio albums I think. Especially the instrumental tracks and medleys.

The band sounds like they are all having a really good time.

The talking bits were fun for what must have been an epic concert

This is definitely a more familiar genre to me. The music was awesome, but I’m docking it for being a live album. I couldn’t hear anything they were saying between songs.

Interesting album. The difference between the original cut and the extended cut is night and day. Extended version is fine if you are already bought in on The Who (which I'm not), but the original cut rocks from the start and doesn't have as much chaff. I'm glad I took the time to listen to both. That said, it's still The Who. I just don't connect with their music. The his were always fine to me and the deep cuts just feel weird. Keith Moon is electric but a bad drummer. John Entwistle does so much work just keeping him in check. Roger Daltrey's vocals don't sell me and Pete Townshend is a monster guitar player from an era of monster guitar players. I don't feel any differentiation with them. They sound better live than in studio in my opinion but I'm still not going to listen again.

Good one!

You never know what you will get with live albums, as the recording varies a lot (especially older gigs) but this sounds reasonably good. The Who were at their top and Keith Moon's drumming is even better live. Roger Daltrey's voice sounds way better than when I saw him a couple of years ago. They would put out more hits after this, and there are parts where it drags on a bit (I wonder if it is just the extended version I am listening to?) but I like this!

Awesome rock concert. Heaven and Hell gets things kicked off right away and never loses momentum from there. Young Man Blues was probably the peak.

Really good album and well mixed for a live album. The Who isn't my favorite, but I enjoyed this.

Great live album. A classic.

Sounds dated now but modern for its time. They're great live musicians, Moons drumming so powerful yet so tight. Pete Townsends talking between songs sounds like dialog from a 1960s Michael Caine Movie.

The strength of this album is almost less about the music and more about the fury and bombast of it. To some degree, I forgot how weird this band was/is. A lot of this set a certain pathway for punk and the influence on those early Rush recordings is also pretty obvious.

Odd 6 song selection especially considering 3 are covers. It does showcase The Who’s ability live

Enjoyed it,, but it did feel a bit flat. Maybe to do w/ having it on in the background.

Good! I didn't pay too much attention to it all the time but I enjoyed it when I did lol it's worth another listen

I really loved this album, half of the whos song and half covers I thought was a very good mixture for a summary of the two concerts (theres also an extended deluxe edition with more songs added (such as 'tattoo' for example)). The drum work by keith moon was also extremely impressive and powerful, and there was an outstanding amount of sound and detail for only 4 people. I was also quite surprised to find a live album on this list, but it is a very nice addition

Woods was a beast!

Good album

Not a fan of the live format

I think I'd get more out of this if I *really* knew The Who's music, as the vocals are a bit muddied, but the sound is great besides that. The riffs and medleys are tops and the energy is tight throughout, exactly what you want from a live album. Favorite track: Heaven and Hell

Mochte ich.

Bra men, som flera påpekat, märkligt val. Magic Bus var spännande. Utgår från att det kommer fler skivor med the Who.

Märkligt med ett livealbum med fyra covers. Sen är albumet trevligt. Gillar live-soundet.

Svag fyra.

I love The Who but at first listen this sounded like a band of school boys still getting their shit together. A number of songs just didn't sound tight like they couldn't hear each other. I had a listen again this morning to a couple key songs and reconsidered my initial observations. Plus when the My Generation medley turns into the chorus from See Me/Feel Me, it ups everything there is about this band and reminds me why I'm such a fan. It's such a classic live album, Keith Moon is something else and Roger Daltrey is peak handsome. I spent a bit of time in Leeds during college. One of the first trips I visited this auditorium. It's so small compared to how big this album looms in The Who's history. I wonder if the sound system simply wasn't as big as the band and they had to work with what they had?

Great album, easy listening 4 of 5

Doesn't sound live apart from some chat. And that's a good thing. Got the extended not the original, of course, so more chat than probably intended.

Good fun!

I like live albums, but maybe I don't like The Who? Or at least not the entire album, but the energy is great

Good album. I enjoyed it. 3.4 +0.2 (live version) 3.6

4 - Schönes Album.

Mike booth would love this 7/10

Great live rock from legendary band!

Solid rock without the jammy fluff. The Tommy tracks don't stand alone well.

It’s a pretty cool album. I feel like including live albums on this list is a bit of a cop out, like they’re trying to cover multiple albums with one. Having said that I think this shows why The Who were popular, they had a full and exciting sound for a 4 piece. Too many covers though.

Good live album

Amazing live performances of great songs.

Classic live album vibes

Man, people don’t really care for live albums here, do they? This shit rocks!

Live albums are usually hit or miss, but this one actually gave me some new respect for The Who. Never been a big fan of any of their albums i've heard, but this one really brings out their punk energy, which is crazy given that it only came out in 1970. The long jam tracks like the 17 minute My Generation track are fantastic, you can see how they were influential to the punk scene. Worth going back to.

Great live album Missing Baba O'Reilly for the big 5 though

Really enjoyed this, lots of great harmonies and melodies

the My Generation alone makes this album great. everything else just adds to it

The Who- Live at Leeds 01. Young Man Blues 4 02. Substitute 4 03. Summertime Blues 3 04. Shakin' All Over 3 05. My Generation 3 06. Magic Bus 4 21/24 4 stars

I struggle with The Who. Are they a serious band? Are they a purely commercial enterprise? Are they just some dudes having fun? I still have no idea. But this album is a ton of fun. The sound is a bit all over the place, and the guitar playing is pretty loose. That said... it's a really good listen.

Surprisingly great stuff. Not usually a big fan of live albums, but this one is just great start to end, and for most of it you can barley tell it's live. My favorite song was my generation

hmmmm idk

I used to say I didn't like live albums. I was explaining this to my mate Dave one time, and started listing exceptions to my rule, and it turned out to be a pretty long list. "Maybe," I thought halfway through explaining my position, "maybe I _do_ like live albums". And I had to accept that I had been kidding myself. I like the rough and ready recording quality, the unpolished immediacy of it all, a band getting down to what they really do best. And it's hard to think of a better example of a live album than Live at Leeds. I am not generally a huge fan of the Who, but, by god, I love this album. It really is a great example of what they do best. They are an incredible live unit at this point in time, everyone at the height of their powers and playing tight and heavy. And with a sense of humour and fun. I own the vinyl version, but today I have been listening to the expanded edition. You can tell that, for the original release, they pared it down to the heaviest tracks, and some really non-obvious choices; only a few previous singles and an equal number of covers, played in their own style. Young Man Blues is a major reinterpretation from the Mose Allison version. The expanded version delves a bit deeper into their catalogue (including A Quick One While He's Away) and was worthwhile listening (which is rare for expanded editions, I find). But I do prefer the fat-free original version for a quick and dirty hit of powerful rock from one of the great live bands of the genre. If someone was going to ask me for a great example of the Who and/or a live rock album, this would be my go-to suggestion.

1. Heaven And Hell - I like the melody and beat. Nice bass riff. The never die is catchy. 2. I Can’t Explain - this one is kinda a little 60s with backing vocals and corny lol. But it’s catchy. 3. Fortune Teller - this one was pretty upbeat and I liked its sound 4. Tattoo - this one is a little slower so it’s not my favourite. 5. Young Man Blues - I don't love the lyrics of this one and the singing style is not my favourite, again the music and sound is good. 6. Substitute - I don't mind this one, it's kinda poppy to me. I liked the lyrics too (apart from the "I look white but my dad was black", cause I'm confused...) 7. Happy Jack - I don't love the style of this one. 8. I’m a Boy - now this one has weird lyrics...don't love it. 9. A Quick One, While He’s Away - a mini opera, so that's interesting. it has a weird story imo, but interesting structure. 10. Amazing Journey/Sparks - i liked the second half better, but it wasn't very capturing for me. 11. Summertime Blues - not very memorable. 12. Shakin’ All Over - i don't like the way this one is sung and i find it a littel repetitive, did not love. 13. My Generation - this one was like a medley of four songs. I didn't mind My Generation, it had fun lyrics. See Me, Feel Me, Touch Me, was ok it kinda gave me power ballad vibes. I did not like Higher aka Naked Eye. Coming out to get you had a cool sound. 14. Magic Bus - this one was ok, not my favourite. Got crazy fast at the end that was cool! Overall, it definitely was interesting listening to a live album. I wonder why this was in the 1001 albums, I kinda feel like it may have been easier to put a greatest hits or something, but overall I enjoyed it enough. I liked most of the music, very classic rock and I liked a lot of the guitar riffs. The rock opera was interesting...

So good but not quite five stars.

Though I'm always skeptical of live albums, this one has some rare magic. There is a raw power that comes through this recording, and one can appreciate how tight and talented the band is individually and as a group. Makes me want to be there!

Fijne muziek

Such a fantastic complement to Tommy, which is one of my favorite albums ever. They're absolutely shredding on this album. I love all the jamming.

Yeees!

What a great record! I never really liked the who, but this record is so good. I can understand that is considered one of the greatest live records of all time.

Having a live album on this list seems to be controversial but I personally think that live albums can be some of the best work a band puts out. I love the energy that this live album brings. You can just tell how good this band was live. Essential Tracks: -Heaven and Hell (Playlist) -Summertime Blues -Substitute -My Generation

Great live album

I haven’t listened to this in years. Biggest observation for me is what a well recorded album. It just sounds great. This is actually one that I may go back and listen to extended editions. I’m curious about the Live in Hull recordings.

I must say, live albums are not my preference, but this one felt good! The Who were definitely a big part of rock and roll early on, and had various influences on other musicians as well. Worthy of this list for sure!

If we're being honest, this did not need to be included on this list. The Who are brilliant and made many classic albums which are included on this list, this is just, I dunno, overkill? However as much as I'd rather have another album in its place, it is still a solid album because The Who are still the frickin' Who and its almost impossible to enjoy their output at that time.

4.0 - Somehow the lore around the Who that's been handed down to me fixates on danger and destruction (Keith Moon breaking stuff on stage!!!, big windmill guitar strums!!!, explosions!!!). I'm glad to now have a chance to actually listen to their records and revise these perceptions. Behind all the schtick, The Who is a fun band. They're funny, too. In fact, some of the on-stage banter in between songs here is downright hilarious, often self-deprecating (see the intro to "A Quick One, While He's Away"). I really liked hearing these songs in a new light, even the 15 minute rendition of "My Generation."

Good who who only had a good couple of songs. But they sounded like aband you needed to see live felt the energy also enjoyed the bants and the covers

Good fun. I really enjoyed this one.

Fun live album that ends with a great track.

7 solid solid classic rock

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Expected to not be impressed, but the live performance added a lot to most of the songs on here, so I enjoyed it for the most part.

Really quite good live album. I do think it’s better the more the band experiments on here, like the extended “My Generation” and “Magic Bus” jams, but even those earlier, more sedate tracks sound more rollicking than the band did previously in recordings. I think I’m still a little too jazzed over Made in Japan from last week though, since I just can’t rank this the same. B+

Rockin and jammin My favorite was probably the medley

It's a solid album and you can really feel their energy as the superband that they were/are and their excitement about playing at home during a time when music in general was on the advance. I can't find fault in it and there were actually a lot of songs I did not know at all. Lots of blues sounds, grinding of axes and classic classic rock.

A bit uneven, but still solid, live album. Keith Moon is in particularly fine form - I love his work on Happy Jack, one of my faves of this album, along with the closer (of the Ext. Edition), Magic Bus.

I'm not totally into the Who's older-rock stuff, but I can respect how much they influenced later stuff. They're way better live, I liked this more than my generation - I finally "got" Substitute & Summertime Blues

Classic. A lot of fun songs.

2/5, 40%

Live at Leeds is a magnificently raw and powerful record. It demonstrates the brilliance of The Who as a unit and is one of the finest live recordings committed to wax.

Really enjoyed this album. Can't really say, if it would've sounded better, if it wasn't a live version, but who knows. I enjoyed my time with it.

That's the best album by The Who I've listened to so far. And it's because it's live. It's a show. The point isn't some artsy concept album with shoehorned lyrics and strained metaphors. The point is for people to enjoy a show. To enjoy the music for itself. And I did enjoy it. Shorn of the pretentious "art for art's sake" aspirations, these boys rock so hard. Their skills and energy are on full display here and it's legitimately impressive. So much raw power that I would never have known they possessed if I'd just listened to "Tommy".

Worth the price of admission alone to hear my favorite classic rock rhythm section run rampant.

Very good especially the bass!

A summary of my knowledge of The Who: Baba O'reiley, My Generation, big in the laste '60s/early '70s. One of those is on here, but it's about 5 times as long as the original? Oh and pinball wizard. That one cracks me up. Goofy as hell. I don't know if a live record is the best way to get into this band (I don't usually do that) but this one obviously seems well acclaimed. Plus, that certainly wouldn't stop me from loving a band I first saw in concert. The nature of this performance seems to lend itself more to their hard rock side, but many songs differ from that template, often in structure and lyricism. The band has some great synergy. The guitar playing is engaging and provides some nice countermelodies to the vocals Transitions between some of the tracks are awesome. It's a well-structured live show with an excellent flow. I was initially disappointed to get a live album in this project, but I must admit, it won me over, and I definitely want to check out some studio albums by The Who soon. Really fun listen! Faves: Fortune Teller (nice tempo change!) young man blues, A Quick One, While He's Away (mini rock opera?) Amazing Journey (that slowdown and sick instrumental in the middle?) My Generation (this is the definitive version!)

Amazing sound quality for a concert over 50 years old. Not my favorite Who songs though

Not a huge fan of Live albums, and this didn't really change my mind although it was decent

8/10 would’ve been a lot more fun to be there in person this is a pretty fun collection of songs really nice to hear but I would prefer a studio album

Good live album

Here's a thing: I don't like live albums, especially when I'm listening on headphones, because when you hear the audience applause I immediately imagine they're clapping for me and I feel a bit silly. Am I strange? Anyway, this live album is good because you can't hear the audience (much). Also, The Who are a lot better, and more Led Zeppy, than I remember. They really knew what they were doing.

Good - liked it as a live album contrary to most of these reviews

Fun concert. "A quick one, while he's away" was a highlight.

Good Who Album with a few good somgs

Très bon album live, The Who savent rocker les amis

Some nice songs. Some average

A lot of talking

Usually not a big fan the who but this goes pretty hard

So, I read up on this album and I think a bunch of people need to put their tongues back in their mouth. It's good for a live album but there are far better. Johnny Cash's stuff at the prisons is better from a pure "feel the crowd" perspective. But what I realized after listening to the original version (the one I'm rating) and the reissue with 14 songs is how much of the crowd interaction is cut out. This album is basically just them playing. So I can kind of see how one pundit thought it felt like it was always on the edge of chaos. If you listen to their interactions with audience, it was far tamer and in many cases they were courteous, gentle and thankful. So kudos to the producers for editing out all the reality and focusing on playing and singing. Which, once I listened to the original a couple times, I appreciated how much energy they were bringing. Now granted, this was basically at the encore part of the concert for 4 of the 6 songs so you just get the climax not the rise. Side one is good, and again they're playing heavy (and Daltrey is snarling when singing) and it's cool to hear. But I think it's their winding rendition of My Generation on side two that is the piece de resistance. It even gives in to a cool version of Magic Bus (I don't really like that song normally). You definitely have to listen to it a couple times to appreciate it. And it's good. But not step over your own mother amazing.

Goeie livemuziek, veel interactie met het publiek

- Instrumentals great - Cool live album (usually don’t like them) - Love the vocals for these songs - Every song is goood

Pretty good live album; it’s fun, though definitely not one of the greats. I listened to the original 6-song version because I’ve already heard the 1 hour 17 minute length one, and it’s probably better. ‘My Generation’ is WAY too long, but otherwise a good album.

So good from start to finish, the standouts for me were #5 Young Man Blues #11 Summertime Blues #12 Shakin' All Over.

Live albums are tricky to rate and seem a bit like cheating... but their energy is great.

Pretty great, really.

Hit after hit

I like the idea of releasing a live rocker right after Tommy, pitting earlier Who hits against their versions of classics like Young Man Blues and Shakin All Over. You get a better appreciation of their alledgedly great live shows, especially Daltrey's singing. I was wary of a 14 minute version of My Generation but the other songs in the medley keep it interesting. Magic Bus, on the other hand, I've never liked

Point 1: Live albums shouldn't make it on a 1001 album list Point 2: I'e heard The Who better live Point 3: It's still a really good album, a tight and amazing live band So... a 3,5 star?

I've never been a huge fan of Roger's voice but you gotta love those tasty riffs.

Great stuff, but I would have prefered the studio versions.

Classic Live.

The Who were one of the greatest live acts of the 60s/70s and this live keeps a nice memory of this statement. Keith Moon's explosive drum playing, John Entwistle's incredibly solid basslines and powerful guitar strumming by Townshend are well felt. Roger Daltrey was also at his peak. A very nice one!

Nothing to complain about here for a Who fan. All the hallmarks of a great live album: many classics, funny interludes, interesting cover choices. It was particularly interesting to here echoes of the times - whether inspiration going one way or the other or just general cultural resonance. Heard shades of Zeppelin, Hendrix, the Stones, and even the Velvet Underground at times, that don't show up in the studio work.

- Skillful rock between hard rock and soft prog

The Who are great, and one of the best bands of the era to experience live. That said, the mixing is not great and these recordings barely qualify for an album. It gets 4 stars for the quality of the music but loses 1 for the recording. 4/5

Heralded as perhaps the finest live album of all time. It is particularly notable for the 15-minute version of My Generation, which is effectively an awesome jam session.

Kick ass live album! This one really proved to non fans that The Who is a powerhouse to be reckoned with. The band sounds great thanks to a very clear mix! Great performances of classic songs! Key tracks: Heaven And Hell, Young Man Blues, A Quick One, While He’s Away, Shakin’ All Over 8,5 out of 10

The Who

Live at Leeds is the fifth album by English rock band The Who and their first live album. This live album features more typical hard rock arrangements that were common at their shows, but were a different flair than their previous studio albums. Critics have praised this album as being the "best live rock album ever". It was nice that the recording primarily focused on the band's music over the crowd noise, which is surprisingly quiet compared to the rock music based on the recording equipment at the time. This was an amazing live album - perhaps truly the best one - and it made me appreciate The Who even more for their lengthily contributions to the rock and roll culture during its golden years. It's like a time machine that allows you to close your eyes, listen, and imagine yourself at one of their concerts in their heyday.

shout out to whoever mixed this cuz it sounds better then some studio recordings from now and its a live album from the 70s

Great sound quality, enjoyed a lot of the songs. It sounded cool.

Nice contrast to their insipid studio sound.

Great album, the extended My Generation is an all-timer

4/5. I love the energy but it doesn’t go hard enough honestly. Feels light hearted at times and I get distracted during songs. Musicianship is great but there is a sense of light heartedness that takes away from the energy of the album.

Lots of bangers on here.

Really fun album! Good live energy. Lots of great songs here...

Amazing live sound

Love the who

A great live album 3.5/5

Great live album. The Who raw and uncut. The drums and bass really stand out. This sounds like the birth of hard rock, or punk music.

I've been enjoying the who on this list, and this is a great live album of their early stuff. It is a little frustrating that it's so hard to find the original album, everything is the 'expanded' version

A great survey of their work, but I think I like the studio albums better

Good songs, I don't love live albums, but was good hearing the band chat

One of my old man's favourite albums. The Who flex their live chops and show why this is one of the best live albums ever recorded. Good between song banter, a mix of classics and deep cuts and just fucking LOUD musicians. Just makes me jealous of the crowd. If only every gig was like this. Best Tracks: I Can't Explain; A Quick One, While He's Away; Summertime Blues

baita som

It's fine

I need to relisten. I bet I would give it a 5 star. I did it some disservice when I couldn’t hear part of the last 3/4 quarter. Dope ending. Awesome put together set. Really hear the emotion. Sick drumming. Awesome vocals. Chaotic to the core but still soooo on beat

Great showcase of how much more creative a rock band can be during a live concert than in the studio

Love the who

It starts a bit shaky but once Keith Moon's drums and Entwhistle's bass kick in, this has some real heft and excitement. Enjoyed it a lot.

Oh man, the power chords, the drumming, the ballsy full throttle rock n' roll of the Who in their prime. Live albums don't get much better than this. I liked pretty much everything about this, but the real revelation was hearing Keith Moon just kill it on the drums during every song. Mind blowing. 4 stars.

The WHO Is great - but why is there a live album here.

Shortly after the Who cross half of My Generation, a riff leaps into the soundstage from the right and, echoing across, returns as a low grind in the left ear. That was the specific moment of the magic the band conjures on this live recording, even in diminished six-track form and on the least typical of those songs. The four musicians approach the limits of rock instrumentation, and fill that space without needing to get psychadelic. Live at Leeds includes one of the more honest Brit takes on the blues I've seen, in the Who's own register. It can do the convincing that their studio recordings sometimes seem to fail to do.

I'm not a fan of live albums, but I can see how this is regarded as one of the best live albums. They play the best of their pre-Who's Next discography, loud and raw, with seamless transitions between songs, playing a variety of rougher garage songs with the more refined Britpop of Tommy. For first-time listeners, the 1995 expanded edition is way too much to dive into, but the original album just consists of the "Young Man Blues", "Substitute", and the last 4 songs here, which is much easier to digest. The last two medleys are more than worth the price of admission and are what guaranteed the 4th star. It's why I advise people to start with the original LP, so you aren't tired by the time to get to the final highlights.

The Who were a great band but their “live” music was even better.

Some longer solos that were probably fun in person but a bit long for an album. Otherwise, good fun

Don’t like live albums. It’s amazing how great they sound live but I hate the talking and banter in between songs.

I did a little more prep before listening to this, and someone was quoted as saying this is the greatest live rock album of all time. And that sounds ridiculous. The Who? I mean, they have some good songs, but The Best? And after listening to the first couple of songs I thought it sounded even crazier. It's not that it was bad in any way, just not the greatest. But then, somewhere around Young Man Blues, I started to change my mind. It felt like the tone shifted to something that was raw but refined and the rest of the concert is a masterpiece. Maybe I was just missing it at the beginning? Every instrument was played to excellence, along with vocal harmonies coming out just the way they needed to. Could it be the greatest live rock album of all time? Maybe.

Bit of a redundant inclusion on the list, given the number of other The Who albums on there, but what the hell, sure, why not. Fave track - "Shakin' All Over"

Great! I listened to the 1995 expanded edition. The familiar numbers like 'Substitute', 'I Can't Explain' and the Bo Diddley beat of 'Magic Bus' ruled, but I was equally taken by their interpretations of tracks written by Mose Allison and Allen Toussaint. Really muscular takes of those songs. Overall it's a beefy, brawling kinda sound, but not without finesse, especially where the longer tracks are concerned. Sometimes live records can sound a little tepid, or they show up the limitations of the artist(s) in question. Not this one.

Veel jammen, erg sterk live

Thanks to these list I discovered a fantastic performance by The Who. I have never payed enough attention to them, and that is a big miss. It is incredible to listen in their music the influence they had in 100s of bands.

Raw and rocking. Moon's bashing is a highlight. One prefers their studio work, which favored their artfulness and melodies (and made Daltrey sound better) over the pimal energy on display here, which is considerable. This isn't to be underestimated and shows off their extensive range and how they predicted both mod and punk. Somehow, tis' easy to overlook how great they once were; perhaps they didn't fly quite as high as the Stones (though one could make the case) but then they've not quite as fully embarrased themselves (though getting quite close) with umpteen farewell tours.

Amazing Journey jam!

I listened to the 14 track edition on Apple Music. This is a pretty rockin' live album. It's got an 'everybody solo!' vibe but the songs are good. I'm familiar with the most popular tracks and there are a few well executed covers. Well recorded at Leeds University, might have to make it a music mecca some time! Could do without some of the chit chat though, which I believe isn't in the original 1970 release.

The Who are underrated. I prefer Who’s Next though

Oh so good.

who doesn’t love the who. this wasn’t their best selection of songs and sometimes the live aspect took away from the greatness of the songs but i’m really pushing it. it’s amazibg

I had never listened to this before...obviously have heard one or two of them before but context is everything.

Pure energy! A solid album

I might be a sucker for live albums, especially when artists' interludes are left on the record. The Who created an entertaining show with a fine set and hilarious breaks. Had a whale of a time. Highlight: A Quick One, While He's Away

The best live rock album? Maybe. Everything sounds great and love the commentary added. It's very close to 5 stars.

Two Who albums in a week might seem like overkill to some, but it's hard to complain too much when the performances are this good. There are multiple versions of "Live at Leeds", from the compact, 37-minute original (listed in the 1001 Albums book) to the full-on two hour set including all of Tommy. I opted for the middle option, which is a fairly daunting 77 minutes long. Thankfully, in the company of four rock gods it zips by in a frenzy of windmill-ing guitar and microphone throws. The only part which dragged slightly was the towering medley in the middle of "My Generation"... sacrilege as it might be to say. Compared with their studio work leading up to this, the band are well and truly on form here. Daltrey holds his own against the raging storm of the three musicians playing under him, from Townshend's tightly wound guitar parts (originating power-pop) to Entwistle and Moon being absolutely unhinged on bass and drums. Really, the untouchable Moon is the MVP here. Unleashed onto a live kit, he seems to attack with more aggression and fervour than we ever hear on the recordings. Listen closely and you can hear his screams as he launches into his next fill. There's a nice split of original material and covers, all taken up to the max with showmanship. As songs themselves, I've never understood the popularity of "I'm A Boy" or "Happy Jack": they're far from the band's best material and really benefit from a slightly punchier treatment here. The prime Who cuts on the record are "Substitute" (given an upgrade here with John Entwistle's gloriously overdriven bass), "A Quick One" and "Magic Bus". Then there are the standards (including "Summertime Blues", "Young Man Blues" and "Fortune Teller") which are also great fun. I can't not mention the band's patter in between songs, from Townshend's gawky, stilted explanation of the "A Quick One" story to Moon chiming in that a "jazz sage" is a flavour of chicken. I'm more a fan of the studio work they did directly after this (Who's Next and Quadrophenia) but "Live at Leeds" is still a hugely enjoyable picture of a band at the height of their powers.

I really owe it to myself to get more into The Who. I listened to this while trying to work (with covid) so I don't think its a really fair shake. Adding it to my "come back later" playlist. Its funny I haven't been able to pinpoint why I prefer other rockbands of the same era more -- maybe they were so early/innovative that it shows a bit?

Rockin' stuff. Nothing mind blowing here, but this was simply a solid and enjoyable live album from a solid enjoyable rock band.

It's a live album, but it has some really great performances. Also really Hard Rock sounding, which isn't my flavor.

Solid live album, goofy but the energy is great 8/10

7/10. (Listened to the expanded edition because it is what's on Spotify). This is some of the most Bri'ish shit I have ever heard. The Amazing Journey and My Generation medleys were excellent, as was Magic Bus, but the rest of it was kinda meh.

Pretty meh for the first 3/4, I really enjoyed the My Generation medley at least. 7/10

Good live album. Keith Moon is the man

Hey they’re a good band

Some quirked up white boys rock out, you love to see it

I was boppin to this. Good fun

The Who was never my very favorite band, but this album is full of great energy and compelling performances!

-Good live album, high quality both in recording and in performances -Like the songs, especially old man blues and substitute

Ahhh I still love the Who. I've spent too long not listening to them. Quadrophenia remains one of my all time faves, but this was the first live album I've actually listened to. I don't know a lot about mixing/mastering, but my opinion was that it was well done on this album. I felt like I could picture exactly where they all were on the stage and appreciate each voice / instrument individually in a way that isn't usual for live recordings. I read the wiki after listening, and I guess there was no mic pointed toward the audience at all. That explains why they sounded so far away.

Leeds Leeds Leeds

Super album, echt top

Great love show

This album has the reputation as one of the best live albums ever released and with good reason. The setlist is stellar, the performance is clean and tight. The chemistry within the band members and with the audience and band is easy going and comfortable and the whole package has a Magic that is rarely captured on tape. Loses 1/2 star because I'm not generally a fan of luve rock recordings. 4.5 🌟

Tremendous live album. (1995 expanded version)

Classic rock, great album!

Much better when I cut the album down to its 37 minute incarnation. It's a much tighter and more expressive album without the fluff. Also, the first song was my favorite song on a first listen to the hour long expanded edition, so my taste is good Highlights: Young Man Blues

Classic live album from The 'Oo. Thrilling stuff

really cool live album. need to listen again

7/10 F.t.: Magic Bus

Solid band with great rock and roll material.

There are a lot of good songs but live albums have there own issues that take away from the album

For a live album this is pretty terrific. For a live album…..

Warm and charming. This feels like an album that would've inspired a lot of indie artists of today.

I accidently let the negative reviews influence my initial reaction to getting this album. Boy was I wrong. I had a blast listening to this album on my "main" system in the living room. The energy, the banter and the overall artistic approach to this live album was a real joy to experience. Well ahead of its time and it 'almost' convinced me that live albums should form part of this list.

Great cover of Summertime Blues and great versions of some Who songs. I liked this one

I liked this more than their studio work

8/5/2021 1/1001

Live album, unfair

Songs are great, but seriously fuck live albums

Really solid live album, "My Generation" live is a masterpiece.

Quite liked this. Though the condensed original is much better than the later rereleases. Only worth listening to that anyway

Proto-metal, in your face Who.

Full bodied rock and roll. Much better than most of the studio records I've previously dived into to

Good classic rock, 3.5?

Great live album with cool renditions of the songs

Like My Generation, the extended version.

pretty good

Was surprised to see a live album on the list, but after listening to it I can now see why its here. Had a great rock n roll sound as well as some good interactions between Daltrey and the crowd. I would happily listen to this again.

Enjoyed it.

A great album by a great band. I don't think it gains anything from being a live recording, however.

4/5 most of this album is pretty awesome, but I didn’t really like the live aspect of it.

Not usually a fan of live albums, but love this one. Raw energy.

Love love love it!

This is very good, I was afraid that for the first time listening to a band a live album may be weird but I really enjoyed this it’s really all you need on a live album and it has great songs on it. I’ll probably check more of this band out. 9/10

Very good. Live the have a Zeppelin like vibe. Keith Moon is a phenomenal drummer. It keeps sounding like it’s about to completely fall apart, but it doesn’t. I will go to Banana’s and find a copy of this
