Reviews (page 4 of 12)
Sin ser yo fan de los discos en directo, pero sí de The Who, este me ha parecido muy bueno teniendo en cuenta, además, que no tiene canciones que conozca.
solid live album and as always, The Who are ridiculously talented. 4/5 8.39/10
Exceptional live album and they'd only get better.
Cover 3 I was not familiar with most of these songs. Any songs of The Who I came across were mostly from TV or movies. Never took the time to check them out. Initially, I wasn't in the mood for long songs (rarely am) and some of these are over 6 or 7 minutes. Was getting really impatient. Mini rant: Spotify often doesn't have original releases. Sometimes, like this album, they only have deluxe and/or expanded versions. I prefer to listen to the original release for reviews and to see if getting the vinyl is worth it, but it's not available on Spotify, so... Perhaps if they made it more obvious which songs were added that'd help (otherwise I just assume the last few songs were the ones added - they usually are).. Anyway, despite my impatience, I listened and ended up liking it. The musicianship was great throughout, even songs I initially skipped due to their length (I got over myself and re-listened to them). I'd say the nearly 8 minute Magic Bus from the Extended Edition is my favorite. The second half of A Quick One... saved that song and I nearly quit listening all together. My least favorites were Summertime Blues and I've heard My Generation too damn many times to be tolerable to me. Likely will always skip that song tbh. 3.5/5
What?
This rocked.
The only Who album that doesn't bore me to tears.
Väldigt bra! Tror ärligt talat kortare versionen är bättre än expanded edition, men älskar hur rått hela albumet är och att de behöll mellansnacket. Så bra
Somehow better than all their studio albums I've heard. The performances are less boring, the guitar and drum solos are pretty flashy and overall just more energy. Feels less like dad rock and more like youngsters kicking some ass.
My expectations are fuckass The album is less fuckass than I thought
Rocky, too long as live recordings felt I had to skip some
I listened to the deluxe version of the album, which I think is the entire concert and is about 3 times longer than the original version. It was fine, solid Who until they got to the Tommy section. Then they just opened up and were amazing. Knocking off a star just because I don’t think the original album included the parts I found amazing here!
Holy Guitar!
I have always preferred The Who to the Stones. I feel like their music was just more interesting than that of the Rolling Stones. This live album, is wonderful. Great music with a great stage energy. Great stuff.
Live albums are a difficult thing because how do you capture the actual show? How do you capture the energy of the performance? How much do you include the crowd? How much editing or processing do you do? I feel that the answer to these questions is on a case-by-case basis. Live At Leeds is considered one of the best live albums ever released and it's not difficult to hear why. This record is a lot like a bootleg, which I think is so much of its charm. It features the in-between chatter, a minimally featured but present crowd cheering after each song, and you can really hear how fucking good The Who is. They’re one of the best rock bands to have ever existed. They were the punk rockers of the British Invasion. Even their most ambitious works, like Tommy and Quadrophenia, realized that every song has a purpose and needs to be its own thing. I hadn’t heard this album before but I was struck by how well it captures the energy of the show while still sounding fantastic. It’s raw and emotive, but you can hear everything. The original track listing showcases how rock and roll the band is, opting for classics like “Summertime Blues”, “My Generation” with an extended jam featuring a medley of excepts from various songs from Tommy, and “Magic Bus”. The anniversary editions add great songs like “Heaven and Hell”, “I Can’t Explain”, Sonny Boy Williamson’s “Eyesight to the Blind”, and rock opera masterpiece Tommy.
I went to Leeds Uni and attended gigs in the refectory. I remember hearing about this album back then and thinking it was amazing race that our little uni was forever remembered as part of the history of a band as big as The Who. But did I listen to it? Nope. I never did until now. And I wish I had heard it earlier. Loved it. Only complaint? Too short!
I really liked this one. This is a classic rock’n’roll album at its best. I’m not sure that the vocals were my favorite, but everything else is about as good as it gets.
8/10
Who write good songs but some of these are tedious. The 15 minute medleys are tough to endure but Shake It All Over was brilliant.
Good fun. Great live album. Lots of commentary which is always nice. Good live renditions of good songs
I’ve had the vinyl of this album for years and there are six songs on it. It’s fine, but includes some of the more self-indulgent numbers including Young Man Blues and 15 mins of My Generation. I was surprised and delighted at the 14 songs on the expanded version including some on my Who favorites like Tattoo, Happy Jack and a Quick One. There’s a good mix here of pretty things and raw aggression. Btw, if you’ve never seen A Quick One from The Rolling Stones Rock n Roll circus, it’s worth your time. It’s also live and you can see what this looked like live. As I understand it, the footage was supposed to be turned into a BBC special, but the Who blew The Rolling Stones off the stage and they changed course. https://youtu.be/RJv2-_--EY4?si=Ie-MA3FelDjmHV02
3.5/5 - You need to hear this because a big part of The Who's legend (for better or worse) is based on their live performances. I love this era of The Who and the setlist is great, but I'm just not a fan of live albums. Still, there's worse ways to spend my time than listening to a set of really familiar songs backed by Moon's constantly crashing cymbals.
Listened to the original. Very good concert. Kinda wished there was some more popular who songs played
This is the album that totally sold me on the Who. It’s always been an album of two halves for me. The opening set through to I’m a Boy sets the mood. High energy, excellent playing, top notch crowd work - not too much to suggest Daltry and Townshend are egomaniacal, but enough to let the audience into their world. The band had such a cool dynamic, and it really comes through in the live show. But then the second half. Holy hell. Hearing A Quick One for the first time totally dispelled my preconceptions about The Who being another garden variety 60’s British Invasion rock act. The mini opera is ridiculous, but I love the commitment to the bit, and everything until the raucous Magic Bus is pure perfection. This is The Who at their absolute performing peak. The story behind why they chose this particular Leeds show for their live record just shows how special an act they were at this particular time in music history. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Standout Songs: I Can't Explain Tattoo Young Man Blues Happy Jack Amazing Journey / Sparks Summertime Blues My Generation Great live album. Also my second Who album in a row. I do think they sound better live honestly
loved the vibes but not my type of music
Great live album. Needs big speakers to sound right. I feel like this performance was very punk and had never connected that before.
great all around album, The Who remains a classic group
The Who. 4.5
3.5
Great live album, but I am not that high on The Who in general, but this is some of their best work. 4 stars
Going with 4 stars for *Live at Leeds*. The first half is especially strong with their "Young Man Blues" and "Summertime Blues" covers and a rousing version of "Substitute".
Solid live album.
A killer set from the kings of Maximum R&B. The only fault is when it meanders at the end through “My Generation” turning into an extended exploration of “Tommy” and possibly “Lifehouse” songs, but the “Magic Bus” jam redeems it all with the sheer force of the band. This is a band at the height of its powers, just after they become massive stars and just before they cemented their legacy as rock gods. Stick around on the 40th anniversary mix for the “Tommy” set and have a good time.
The Who. Music that last a lifetime. A great album including a lot of their best songs.
Muy bueno
Great performance. Good songs and energy. Know the band but they have new depth for me here.
Продовжуючи тему улюблених концертних альбомів - цей входить в мій персональний топ-10. Young man blues!
One of the best live performing bands of all time. Great songs on the album, and plenty of energy throughout. Love the live version of Fortune Teller
Joda, rocker bra dette.
The who at their greatest. right off the success of Tommy. Pure innovation.
i don't typically care for live albums that much, but this was a good one so +1 star
When I was a teen in the 70’s this was considered “the” live album (definitely not Frampton’s) by all the cool kids. I’m sure I’d heard it at parties or a friend’s house, but it didn’t make much of an impression. My first thought today once the album started is that this sounds like all the stuff I don’t like about late sixties and seventies hard rock, but the bass and drums kick ass. As I listened further I started to appreciate the between song banter, even laughing a few times. By the end, I caved and just enjoyed what they were giving, as the final couple of songs just kicked my ass.
3.5
It's a little weird hearing the show grind to a halt for Daltrey to introduce a song. My sense of a Who concert is bombast, not a lot of dynamics, just big and loud and long. It's something of a marvel that this essential quality of a concert never really existed prior to this decade. Sure, early rock n roll, big bands, opera, jazz, orchestras, Greek oration, the Homeric tradition, humans have been watching humans perform music since before historical record, but 3 instrumentalist and 1 dude swinging a microphone, all amplified, basically doing a "lower" art form...that never happened before. Is this the best version of it? Seems that way.
A really strong live album of which I'm well familiar. Thanks for sending it!
Definitely near the top of the list of favorite live rock albums.
Can't get over how good they sound live. STANDOUTS: Heaven/Hell - amazing guitar and bass on this. I Can't Explain - love hearing their thick accents speaking at the end of this. Fortune Teller - fairly forgettable which is grand cos it's not theirs. Tattoo - always amazing. Reminded again how it has a similar tune to 'A Must to Avoid' in parts. Living for the jokes at the end of it. Young Man Blues - great guitar and bass again. Again love the jokes at the end. My Generation - love the playing with timings on this and his growl. Love the slight melody change at the beginning at the start of See Me/Feel Me in the Medley part.
There are some as says that this is the greatest live album of all time. Others choose Nirvana's Unplugged in New York. Still others plump for Frampton Comes Live! You're all wrong of course: the greatest live album of all time is Chas & Dave - Not Just Anuvver Beano: Live at Hammersmith from 2016. Banger after banger after banger, how can you not? So, tough luck boys, but this really is a tremendous effort. All four of the lads are on top form and the songs feel alive from start to finish. Obviously the hits stand out (I Can't Explain, Substitute and My Generation - in medley form- all sound just as good as they do on the records) but every track crackles. Top stuff. Obviously I have to deduct a point for Roger's support of Brexit...
hell of a live album!
A live album that doesn't sound live. I really like The Who. When I saw "Live" I was expecting a noisy concert album, and this isn't it. "A Quick One, While He's Away" was amazing, but I would never expect that to be played on the radio. It's a wonderful little gem. The different medleys work. My Rating: 4/5
Surely one of the best live albums ever, it's a great showcase for the band in their prime. Their versions of "Summertime Blues" and "Shakin All Over" are ferocious and they rip into their 60's songs with abandon. Would have liked to hear the version with all of "Tommy," but this version is plenty long enough.
The
There are like 50,000 different versions of this album. I listened to the 1995 release and it was really good but just too long. I think at some points (the near 20 minute version of my generation) it devolved into guitar wanking but other than that solid stuff!
Best tracks are the covered and early singles (only on the extended version)
I don't understand the hate for live albums here, this is great, I can feel the bands humor, love for music, energy, and the banter from the audience, makes me feel like I'm there. Rock isn't usually my thing, but this was very fun. 8/10
The original tracklist version is not even on apple music by itself. I think if I listened to that only it could've been closer to a 5. Still, this is a pretty cool live album I have to say. Not THE best ever in my opinion, but damn, they can play.
Good recording
Not my favorite Who live album but Pete and Keith were top form.
5/5.
4.5
Idk but live vocals and instruments is just how music is supposed to sound. Felt like I was at the concert myself, I love it!
Pretty great live album from the Who just absolutely rocking. Want to see how many guitars they smashed on stage during this. I like how it was not a majority of their super popular songs so it was cool to hear some new songs by them.
I believe this is our 5th The Who album. Excited to hear them live even though this came out before my favorite album we've had so far (Who's Next). Honestly a sad thing I've learned from this project is that I'm not a huge The Who fan. I'm surprised Roger Daltrey's bitchass can hear over these drums! This definitely rocks. I kinda love Daltrey (or Townshend?) going into detail about the songs. Doesn't work always but definitely interesting to get some background on these tunes. Substitute absolutely slaps. Same with My Generation. Love the Foxey Lady addition in there as well.
Buen directo, los Who siempre animan.
Hell yeah
now THAT is how you do a live album. it’s got everything you would want in a live album… crowd commitment, a cover, and a medley that starts with one of their biggest songs. pretty damn heavy for 1970, and a nice tight 37:43. true greatness. highlights: “summertime blues” “my generation” “magic bus”
Great live performance.
Still not a fan of live albums. But I have to admit, this is a pretty good one. Seems like The Who knew how to deliver a pretty good performance. The selection of tracks and how the tracks were changed from the album versions are pretty on point too.
Good one
good
This took me several listens to get into BUT it totally grew on me. Not sure I prefer the live album but what a great show it must have been!
This does rock. The Who were strange guys with their operas and affinity for writing about 'dumb and blind kids', but you can't say they didn't back it up. I like the bass prominent in the mix, it's more present than the studio albums
Wasn’t convinced of the need to hear a live version over a studio album, but walked away pleased & understanding of why it’s acclaimed highly for what it is. Heavier than I expected from a band with mod beginnings/the Tommy sound of the time. Favorites: Young Man Blues, My Generation (Medley), & Tattoo (May 16, 1970; Rock; British/English; 14 tracks; 1hr 17 min runtime)
Great mix of songs.
its a live album for a band im not that into (and have managed to never conciously hear up til this point). its a betterr rock act then last time, i jus hope if i get them again i dont get a live album. The track listing is in the wrong order :/. other then that its pretty good. I can picture william shatner jamming out to these, and its kinda funny, just picutring captian kirk wearing his whatever people in the 60s thought the 22nd century headphones would look like listening to the who. given that this album is only 6 tracks (on rym which is my frame of reference for what amount of tracks an album should have) i dont have much to say because i didnt have much to hear. This wouldve been a good freebie if i was like 3-4 albums behind. overall i liked it. i feel like it didn't overstay its welcome, in fact i would've welcomed it for longer, it would be better if it were 45 minutes as opposed to a measly 36.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. I wouldn't call their style my cup of tea, but they've got fun instrumentals and play with a great deal of restraint + precision even live. I also like the additional buzz and banter coming from it being live. (also noting that I listened to the expanded edition) Fave: Magic Bus
Cool album
Really good
Good album but I don’t think there should be live albums on this list. Plenty of albums should make the cut over any live album.
I was skeptical of a live album, but this really shows how good The Who was. Fantastic listen
One of the better live albums I've listened to. These guys can jam.
Pretty good stuff. The drums really carried it for me. Solid throughout, got a little sleepier toward the end.
Favorite Track: Heaven and Hell
I thought it was a bit odd that a live album was on this list, but this actually ruled. Great performance.
This one does seem a little unnecessary. None the less it's the Who.
I've been sleeping on The Who way to long. This is absolutely bangin!👌 At times you forget this is actually a live recording because of how tight and great the band sound in this. Definitely going to check out more of their music for sure.
Pure rock expression, great sounding record and a good set of songs for fans of the band.
Ok, weird that there is a live album for the who before i listen to a who album, but the drums are drumming. lets do it. I am totally into this album. I love live albums where it is just the entire concert. I wonder if it is just the mix or the actual crowd, but it sounds like a massive concert for 100 people. I really dont understand this album. It is the deluxe version and has a ton of tracks and i feel like it should have ended sooner, and I wonder if it is multiple shows. I am not complaining though, I am enjoying it, just kinda finished. I was right, the album is still live at leeds, but it is a different concert, live at hull. A good album!
The Who is amazing live. Some great performances in here.
Recording quality makes you feel like you’re right on stage at a small venue. Love the interactions with the crowd between songs Holy shit there’s a podcast and a 3 act play in the middle of this
Not bad for a live album! Not a lot of crowd chatter and can clearly hear each song. Fitting that i was waiting to get a tattoo when that song came on
Going to give this a 3.5 bumped to an 4 even though I love The Who. Many critics consider this what are the best live albums ever as the who were always trying to do something new. I would choose other Who albums before this one.
You might not know it, but the Who recorded several shows performing "Tommy" in concert. They didn't like the recordings, so they booked a couple shows that became "Live At Leeds". Six songs in 37 minutes, three of them covers! 14 minutes of "My Generation". My favorite track is a raw and dangerous sounding "Shakin All Over".
Classic rock at it's finest. Great guitar and drums, rocking out hard live, loud, and just partying on. Blues influence but bigger and louder. A lot of hard work put into making these songs but yet they don't take themselves too seriously on stage, joking around. Starts strong, finishes strong.
Personally I have no problem with live albums being on this list. Really enjoyed this one.
Such a classic - 4.5 stars
What a phenomenal album. Many argue that live recordings don't belong on this list. For the majority of live albums, I agree. There are a few exceptions when the live recording creates something new and special. I don't mean some instrumental solos, but something that would only work in a live setting and not in a studio.
Classic Who. This foursome was the best of The Who. Brilliant recording of so many early hits here. Saw them live in the late 80s and they were still great, but had definitely lost a bit by then. Glad I actually saw them live though. Daltry and Townsend will always be legends, but Entwisle’s keyboards and Moon’s drum were just as amazing.
Das Album enthält sechs Titel, darunter „Young Man Blues“, „Substitute“, „Summertime Blues“, „Shakin’ All Over“, „My Generation“ und „Magic Bus“.
This was my first favorite Who album (expanded edition). That said, the covers of “Summertime Blues” and “Shakin All Over” aren’t that great (the Mose Allison cover is all right, but also not my favorite). So this would be 4 stars from me, either with or without the expansion.
I definitely wasn't thrilled about this when it came up. Too many live albums on this list, and they generally are pretty mediocre, and they are generally double albums. But this clocks in at less than 38 minutes? That seems wild to me as a live album, and was wondering what made it so great. I also saw that it's 6 tracks, 3 of which are not even original songs by The Who, and kind of rolled my eyes hard. Anyway the recording and performance on this album absolutely rips. This band is high energy and loud and raw in all the best way. I imagine they were insane to see live. The original songs of theirs sound incredible. Obviously, subsequent re-releases of this album include the whole live show, not just what was edited and cut for the 38 minute release. I will give it a listen to just hear this artifact. I still don't think live albums should be on this list though.
I really needed that 15 minute My Generation medley
Good
Some folks have some intense feelings on live albums. I personally like them and not gonna knock points for them appearing here. That said - great live album. Just some really fuckin good rock and roll - like the way it was intended. THey're not trying too hard - they're just absolutely ripping and rocking on stage. They sounded so chill and non chellant - really solid record. Love the artwork too - things that are low lift and simple really pop for me.
Rock n roll, attitude. Amazing vocals, before even looking up any details about this album you can hear this is the band we all know and love in absolute peak form. Also for the 70s (in fairness I don't listen to loads of live stuff from that decade) this sounds incredible for a live recording, the bass is punchy and crisp, the drums are overpowering (that's Keith Moon for you I guess) and the vocals are soaring and pitch perfect. The Who are by a long way, not my favourite band, and so I’ve not actively sought out their whole discography. Obviously records like Tommy and Who’s Next are hard to avoid but I find it hard to love aside from a few tracks. This album is different. Live, the band really show that live bands in this era, and the Who in particular had something very special. There’s not loads of flashy showmanship, but it’s loud, tight, fun and very entertaining.
Just obviously the best rock musicians in the world at that time
Not normally a fan of live albums but this one was pretty decent
4/5
This is the fourth live album in a row now so I'm going a little crazy, but it's The Who and it slaps so who am I to complain?
Audio is incredible. For a live recording I can't understand how an album can sound this good from its time. The banter between the songs is worth the listen alone.
Rating: 8/10 I do not like this band but this was great. The band are amazing musicians and the songs on here were very good. Roger Daltrey has a great sense of humor and has a knack with engaging with the audience. Overall pleasantly surprised by this.
Oh a live album! This one is actually really weird sounding (but in a good way) in that there's virtually no crowd noise over the songs so you're just getting the band. Pretty unique for a live recording. Live stuff isn't usually my go to, with a few exceptions of course, but this sounds pretty tight. Lots of good solos, the recording is actually pretty good and you get to hear everything. This is as naked and pure as rock and roll gets. I don't know why, but somehow this one didn't really really grab me like I though it would. I like The Who, but maybe I just didn't find the songs too interesting? I mean, they were good, but didn't really hook me all the way in. I don't think these are their best songs. Standouts were: "Tattoo", "Young Man Blues" - that bass line is insane - "Happy Jack," and "A Quick One, While He's Away" Live At Leeds is a really solid, cool album. I probably wouldn't re-listen to the whole thing on purpose but there are some really cool songs and to hear such a pure live performance is a rare and cool thing. This one gets a strong 4 out of 5 for me.
Great quality. I'm not the biggest Who fan, but I enjoyed this live album.
A Quick One, While He's Away!
I wasn’t super into it until the musical theater skit that is A Quick One pushed this to a four. Sometimes it was hard to believe this was live, very impressive. It’s too long however, I love My Generation but 15 minutes is crazy. It was a fire 15 minutes though not gonna lie. Overall very fun.
Not a fan of live albums, but it was okay
Never listened to these guys before today, didn't expect to enjoy them as much as I did, very similar to the stones which is definitely not a bad thing. If anything this album really pushes me to go listen to their recorded stuff. Like all good rock and roll or classic rock or whatever you want to call it, it's actually got a lot of depth to it. I found myself returning to songs I didn't enjoy or find particularly remarkable the first time around only to be genuinely impressed, like "how did i miss that" this really is an album with a lot of depth a layers to it and it's just a live recording. I love classic rock albums like Paul McCartney's RAM or the aforementioned Stones Exile On Main Street which demand to pay attention and promote you to keep coming back, and to listen over and over and over. Definitely the type of album to creep up on you. You throw it on just one more time and then you've been listening to it for 4 hours. Good stuff. Super preliminary review since this stuff always grows on me. I originally gave RAM a 7 and now I think it's a 10 so... 8/10
A lot of fun tunes with good writing and vibes, but a lot of it just sounded too same-y to me. My Generation the extended version really rocked hard though.
Tasty jam sesh
It was alright. The rhythm section is 🔥
The Who are actually my Dad’s favorite band. They are pretty good. I didn’t realize that when they play live they tend to play heavier. I really enjoyed it! Album stand outs for me were Young Man Blues and Shakin’ All Over.
On one hand, it's a live album. On the other hand, it's The Who, and they're being endearingly silly when they're not playing the music. Definitely one of the better live albums I've listened to.
I listened to the original album tracklist. Liked the energy.
Good to get a sense of the energy from one of their concerts! Good combination of their early songs.
Pas mal, mais je m'attendais à un truc beaucoup plus énervé. C'était bien plus pop que prévu.
Apples to oranges, you can’t just drop live albums into the mix against regular albums. Like Nirvana’s Unplugged and Johnny Cash’s prison albums, it’s just a greatest hits collection - in this case with the original 6 track listing, just a bare snippet of that. Most 4 star album bands in here could produce a 5 star greatest hits live album. -1
4/5
Concerts were different back then huh
Leeds. Most of these songs don't actually sound live which is a plus.
Young Man Blues 3.8 Substitute 4 Summertime Blues 4.1 Shakin' All Over 4 My Generation 4 Magic Bus 4.2 Score: 4.016666667
Honestly one of the best live albums I've heard in my life so far. The sound quality was surprisingly great, I enjoyed it a lot. And it was a first album from this list that made me listen to it twice and not just once.
Awesome album from an awesome band. I wish I was able to see the Who live with the original members. I've listened to the Who as a kid, in high school, and as an adult.
Solid live performance. I enjoy a good live performance. Guitarist, Band and Vocalist on point. But a whole album of a live performance? Not sure, but why not.. 3.5/5
3.5/5.0: Very Good
great musicians who sound great live
Solid album a lot of momentum in the tracklist
*AJ Soprano voice* So what, no “Eminence Front”??? I kid. I went through a massive, massive phase with The Who when I was in middle school so I’m quite familiar with these guys. Never heard this live album, though! Did the original track listing here with six tracks clocking in at almost forty minutes, and it is far better at showing off why the band was held as highly as they were compared to the familiar studio cuts. Really love the extended jam sessions, love hearing those rollicking Keith Moon drum hits, that raw Daltry wailing. Now, do I think a live album should be on the essential list? I’m not sure… BUT I think there are certain live records that completely re-contextualize the original subject matter, such as Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell live album, and I think the same can be said here. There’s something special about hearing The Who in their original state, right at the start of the 1970s, absolutely raring to go. Good band. I’ll allow this to be considered essential.
the original 6 tracks (less than 40 mins) are good, but the 2001 Deluxe has 33, including "Tommy" and is over 2 hours
You can’t go wrong with what’s essentially a greatest-hits album from one of the most legendary 60s rock bands... right? Well, the Who pull off this task pretty convincingly. However, because it’s a live album (and a lengthy one at that), there are noticeable and frequent mistakes, particularly in the lead and backing vocals, compared to the studio versions. And you can be sure the audience has spun the studio version until the disc is cracked. Live music actually benefits from this sometimes, making the music sound more human. It also allows the audience to connect to the band by being up close and witnessing their fallibility in real time. The downside is that the off-kilter singing just doesn’t sound as good as the studio version, and since albums like My Generation and Tommy are included in this list too, you’re better off omitting Live At Leeds. Regardless, it’s a fun listen. The extended versions of some of these hits are enjoyable, showcasing the band’s improvisational skills (especially those of the great Pete Townshend) through lengthy solos. Keith Moon’s ridiculously good drumming is always present, dancing between the guitar and vocals lines to create an energy that was (at the time) unmatchable. The band would go on to perfect their craft with their next studio record, Who’s Next, but the sound is nearly fully developed here. The rock vocals of Roger Daltrey are distinctive as ever, belting out fun-packed 60s-esque lyrics like nobody’s business. 4/5 Key tracks: Happy Jack, I’m A Boy, My Generation
Not the biggest fan of live albums but this is a banger
whale cum to da magic bus.., järisyttävää kamaa.. joo en tiiä,, the who on parhain huono bändi ehkä koskaan. koko porukka aivan mestareita omassa lajissaan, mutta pilaantunutta koska niin iso määrä huonoja biisejä. whos next studioalbumi erittäin vakuuttava alusta loppuun ja quadrophenia osittain hyvä. valitettavasti molemmat kyseiset albumit ovat tämän livehomman jälkeen, joten tässä lauluselektiot ovat aikalailla täyttä paskaa. tommy on aivan kusinen albumi (ylireaktio heheh annoin 3..), eikä muutenkaan 60-luvun who säväytä ollenkaan, vaikka sieltä saivat valtavan yleisön. osaavat soittaa.. magic bus
Not sure I've ever heard this whole album, but great energy here. Also some gems I hadn't heard in a while and forgot about like Young Man's Blues and Substitute. Maybe this isn't such a work of art as Quadrophenia, Tommy or some of the other studio albums, but great energy and driving rock power. Basically a greatest hits album. Also a good refresher from the type of experimental schlock albums I've been getting on this list recently.
Sure, I guess. Kinda feels like cheating: it's technically a "live album" rather than a "greatest hits," but it doesn't really feel like a live album. Then again, I don't particularly care for most live albums so I'm not really complaining, it just seems like a curious choice for this list. 3.5
It's a great live album
It was a good live performance, and I got to hear a side of the Who that I hadn't before. They still don't fully click for me, but they brought a good energy the whole way and I generally rate live albums pretty highly.
Classic rock with great fuzzy guitar
The biggest Who in Whoosville.
Fantastic live album. Really enjoy listening to Keith Moon on this one. Just not sure why a few select live albums made the list. Should be no live albums unless that was the only way to hear the songs.
For the original playlist. The spotify link has nearly the full concert and would be too long for me (obviously not for the fans)
Fantastic production value on this timeless selection of EARLY Who songs. Lotta yippin' and yappin' about The Who in the responses about this album. Remember listening to "The Who Sells Out" and "My Generation" and how goofy that shit sounded? I personally love it but, here it is. Distilled into an injectable vial, pure unfiltered raw rock and roll riffage as like a beacon or lighthouse in a foggy storm. I love Live at Leeds, and frankly you should too.
Слушая, не могу отделаться от мысли, что все мы когда-то были молодые и все когда-то состаримся и когда-то умрём. Квинтэссенция английского рока.
im not normally a big the who fan but i loved this album!
Thoroughly enjoyed but it’s a classic that I probs wouldn’t listen to on repeat. Cannot believe it’s live
When time travel becomes legal, I will be at this concert
Not the biggest on live albums, but this made me wish i was alive to see them live at their height. The Who was one of my favorite "Dad bands" when i was young. 15 minutes of My Generation was a bit extensive though
Not a huge proponent for live albums but I love the Who
First listen in the car and while working was decent but boilerplate classic rock. However, listening during a run where I could concentrate to the riffs and little flourishes showed why this is so highly regarded. Best enjoyed by pretending you were there. We saw them a couple years ago but it was more like the corpses of pete townsend and roger daltry with a backing cover band. I can only imagine what Leeds was like. It's really apples and oranges to have live albums rated on the same scale as studio albums and they should be on separate lists.
Wow! I'd known of this record since I was a kid, but just listened to it today. Great stuff! Their own stuff and (most of) the covers are both amazing. It feels exactly like a 1970 record, too, bridging the two decades. The stage banter is self-deprecating and funny, too. It starts to drag by Side 2, though, and we see some of the proggy elements that would make The Who significantly less good in the 1970s.
Really great album. Nice clean sound, good interaction with the crowd, lots of good music
Classic

Of course you can Debate If a Live Album should Even be in this List, but Common, this one is regarded as the best live Album ever, so I think we can let it pass. The Instruments are Crazy, especially Bass and Drums. Most Songs are really good to but the longer Songs in the second half Kind of Bored me. Still excellent
Given what we know today, could have done without some of the non-musical interludes. As live albums go though, the musical bits are pretty good.
Great album. I set out wondering if it will make 2 or 3 starts and it aced 4 stars.
I was traveling down a road in between ice walls with a childhood bully. We were looking for something in a town ,Ike Gatlinburg. I was in a comic shop with a friend Brendon. It was being ran by a guy who wasn't paying attention. He was familiar. I was being rushed. On his newsstand he had a bunch of comics that were black bagged but all of them were open and damaged. It was annoying. My dad picked me an a guy who looked a lot like Dennis Klebold but I don't believe it was him just looked like him up. We needed to go to bed. I laid there not feeling sleepy because I'd just shotgunned a bunch of coffee when suddenly y blankets were being pulled off the bed. I tried to reason it first but then the blankets were being g pulled harder and faster.i rant to my parents room. I could see my room from theirs and while I was explaining I saw my new ,intense. Of course it was him. I saw my cat soda pop too and wondered why she didn't sleep in bed with me anymore but she's been dead for a long time. The DK looking guy woke up and started eating peanut butter crackers. The smell was strong and woke me up.
Well, it’s just a typical live album, like many others. However, this was supposed to be one of the first live albums to come out, which was groundbreaking for its time. Other than that, it’s definitely good music—you can't go wrong with The Who.
A great live album, although it sounds a little bit dated now, but given that the album is now over 50 years old, that's perhaps to be expected. Six tracks, including three covers; the etended versions of "My Generation" and "Magic Bus" are the standout tracks.
This will be my third album to review by The Who. I gave three stars to The Who Sell Out and five stars to Who's Next (which is one of the best rock albums of all time), so I have pretty high hopes that I'll enjoy this, even though it doesn't really have any of my favorite songs of theirs on it. Let's get live on a Monday! I've been pretty lukewarm on a lot of the live albums on this list, but The Who Live at Leeds definitely feels like a cut above the other live albums I've reviewed so far. Granted, I enjoy The Who's music, so I'm a little biased. I thought the energy on this album was really great, which is pretty unusual, given that there isn't much crowd noise on this album. However, the recording and production on this album sound incredibly clean, which made this album stand out even more for something from this era. The thing that struck me the most on this album was the bass playing. Out of all the guys in The Who, Entwistle never gets mentioned as one of the best of his craft, but on this live album, you can really hear his talent on full display. His bass playing fits snugly between the lead guitar and drums and shines just enough to really round out the hard rock and blues sound of this album. I was also impressed by how cohesively all of these songs fit together into a setlist, especially since three of these songs are covers. My only complaint with this album is that these aren't really my favorite Who songs, and having them stretched out for a live performance felt tedious at several points, but the band still knocked it out of the park. I'm not a big fan of live albums, but this is something I wouldn't mind having in my collection.
One of the best live albums you'll hear.
I listen to The Who on occasion but have never listened to this, even though it is held in high regard, until today and like I thought it would be its brilliant. They sound so good live and I do like it when bands talk to the audience on a live album.
Good stuff !
fun live album
This rocks.
not entirely my thing? but still good - crazy that it was recorded at my uni
Pretty great stuff.
25/01/25 I've never listened to an album by The Who. Although some of the songs were long, it was an alright album.
I hadn't listened to this one in ages. I know I had it on vinyl when I was a teenager, but I don't know what happened to it. Anyway... sure.
Nothing particularly special, just extremely fun, energetic riff rock. It’s simple and enjoyable. There's surprising amount of variation here, and the same riffs are not repeated over and over again (even in the 14-minute song). I wish they'd cut the talking out of the digital release, though, but it's not the album's fault.

Rock Live album von Uni gig. Very classic rock well presented. Fantastic vocals. Charming band. Concert sounds like a good time.
Excellent loved the back and forth with audience
An Essential Rock live album for sure. The band was smoking from start to finish.
To approximate the original release as closely as possible, I created a playlist with the tracks taken from the 1995 expanded edition that appeared on the original LP. I know that approach is counterintuitive to Pete Townshend's original intent of having Live at Leeds be a double album, which the expanded edition and 40th anniversary super deluxe edition satisfy. But I wanted to take this album as it originally was because that's the version that got all the critical acclaim, to begin with. With that in mind, Live at Leeds in its basic form is a solid collection of live tracks, performed with a more hard rock edge than what The Who previously did in the studio. It's apparent from the get-go with their cover of Mose Allison's "Young Man Blues" that they were playing with a great deal of ferocity in Pete's guitar licks, the uptempo rhythm section particularly in Keith Moon's drum banging, and Roger Daltrey's charismatic vocals. They were having fun with these covers alongside their original material, like the sprawling 15-minute medley baked into "My Generation". I'd say the one track I didn't care about was "Substitute". My feelings for that song have soured over time, as the lyrics have not aged well as a meandering list of what objects or people Pete would want to change. Instrumentally it's passable, and live it's done in under two and a half minutes, but I could've gone with a different track. Overall, I'm glad I listened to Live at Leeds and caught a glimpse of the raw, sonic energy that The Who displayed in their live shows.
It was fun.
Love tommy so the tommy medley was great. Solid performance from everyone. Band sounds tight and together, crowd had fun
Good live album 4/5
I think this is worth a 4. Possibly 5.
I consider myself a casual Who fan but gotta say, I loved this. They sound great and I liked hearing them in their prime since I never would have had the opportunity otherwise.
Like so many others here, I don't particularly enjoy live albums. I did, however, enjoy seeing The Who live, even though it wasn't all the way back in 1970. I also don't usually key in on the drums but man, you can't help it here. Live at Leeds is actually a pretty fun album to listen to, all things considered.
I find too much of The Who's music is drawn-out and their style isn't usually for me. But being a live album, this was a lot punchier and not as complicated as their studio albums. It helps that the only two Who songs which I like "Substitute" and "Magic Bus" are on here, plus a cover of "Shakin' All Over" which is a great song.
I'm glad to hear some Keith Moon from his prime. All four of these guys sounded terrific (I think) -- the recording quality from 1970 wasn't the best. I guess that gives it some charm.
Good sounding album. Solid tracks and nice to hear some in between track banter
Love this, one of the best live albums. Summertime Blues is amazing.
Great album I just got pissed and wanted them to keep playing every time they announced the next song in calm polite British etiquette
I reeeally delayed listening to this album. I’m writing this at least a month after the generator gave it to me. But damn, I am super pleasantly surprised. I’d normally complain about a live album, but without it, I never would have known how funny The Who is. (Even if the humor is incredibly British.)
Pretty good
Quite rocking. I like. The instrumentals are a bit Hendrix. Amusing lyrics.
Classic live album! Great energy 4 stars
I think this might have been the only Who album my parents had on vinyl when I grew up, and I always really liked it. I still think it's a really great live album, and a really great Who album.
Good sounding recording. Shows how skilled these guys were at their peak.
Very much feels like a cornerstone of early modern rock. They can play the shit out of their instruments but it’s missing the more mature experimentation I’ve come to expect from peak The Who.
As a rule I generally don’t like live albums but this one was pretty good.
Raw and rocking, there's something both preternaturally punk (\"My Generation\") and meta-mod (\"Substitute\") here. And it's very much job done if they were trying to contrast away from art rock of Tommy. Not Daltrey's finest moment – he seems a screamer live, more so than in studio. Moon's rampaging and Townsend's deep bluesing steal the show (or threaten to). For a band with considerable range, I find \"Young Man Blues\" a credible exercise (though not one's personally favored spot on the continuum), preferring the poppier melodies on \"Substitute,\" which holds up very well indeed. Even \"Magic Bus,\" a dumb-ish song is much improved live. Listening to this suggests we too easily forget how considerably influential the Who were, as if they fly under the radar somehow, despite the big name.
Not a great fan of the Who but I can’t deny the powerful performance and musicianship on display here.
I listened to the remastered version. You might want to find someone with better mastering skills. ;) But...The Who are great live.
Oh interesting. a live album from Leeds by the Who. Super down to check this out. I dig the Who. Not an out-of-my-way type of band. But when they come on I do enjoy. I don't know enough of The Who's material to really graps this live performance.
The Who need i say more just banging rock
241/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
I’m a sucker for a live album. I think my dad might have been there for this. Loves it. Some epic self indulgence going on with this one
Decent for a live album that’s not a massive stadium recording. Great bass lines, some slightly questionable banter about Girl Scouts.
I don’t like live albums, but as they go this is pretty decent.
It’s alright
obviously they were a great live band but still strikes me as funny they threw a live album on here.
Raw live album. Takes a couple of the song for them to get going but fun show in the end.
Great live album from a great band
A lot of this is just ok but the versions of My Generation and Magic Bus that end the album are outstanding.
a classic
Very good live album.
Bombastic
The most fun I’ve had listening to The Who
Live albums are not my thing, unfortunately. But I am awed by the fact that a 15-minute long track is nothing short of amazing rock goodness. Wish the inbetween talking and the audience cheers were cut, but the overall album is incredible. Best tracks: Amazing Journey / Sparks, My Generation Worst tracks: Happy Jack, I'm A Boy
My interest in The Who has waned quite a bit over the years, but this is a kick-ass live recording. Even I can't hate on this. Every track is a classic banger. Entwistle's tone is off-the-charts fantastic.
Good live performance from The Who. If I enjoyed them more, I’m sure this would have been very special. Standouts: Fortune Teller, Young Man Blues, I’m A Boy, and A Quick One, While He’s Away.
Was skeptical about a live album being included in this but was pleasantly surprised. Might be my most enjoyable listen so far.
not to brag but i got the opportunity to work with pete townshend earlier this year, so now every time i listen to the who im like omg he knows me…. wild. anyway, this fucking rips. why do people hate live albums????? captures the energy of the act of creation. sorry you can’t handle theater you freaks. studio babies!
First of their multiple version of this album. There is the full show, a 1.5 hour version and the short 6 song version, which is the original and I assume the version this list. I listened to the 1.5 hour version. Live at Leeds, I imagine is a great representation of The Who in 1972. Its production is fantastic. It’s energetic and really shows off Moon and Townsend. A great live album, My Generation, Magic Bus encore is The Who 8.2/10
Love the who but this album is, for me, far from their best works.
Its undeniable that this is a great live record, and likely one of the best in its day, but it's since been outclassed by 50 years of development in the genre and live performances as a whole.
Yes yes this is a great document of a classic rock band playing many of their best songs live but at what cost? For whom do we pay for this slice of musical historical history? I don’t know what the price of a piece is. But it seems to me the same thing as a piece that has a certain value.
enjoyed it in the original (shorter) issue but didn't stand out to me as one of the greatest live recordings of all time. So far, I think the best live recordings I've heard have been some Stax soul recordings and the Fela Kuti with Ginger Baker live that's on this list.
4-4.5
Pretty good, definitely something I can kick back to and listen to.
I liked this. I only know the big Who songs, but this had a distinct sound and I could groove to it.
Out of the 75 The Who albums on this list, this one is the best. Heavy guitars, restrained (somewhat vocals), and good selection of jams that blend seamlessly into each other.
Very impressive that that was a live recording. Sounded studio polished, these guys are good.
Who doesn't love the Who? I hadn't heard a live album of theirs before and enjoyed this one.
A classic… so much energy in the performace And, fun fact, my old Maths teacher swore blind he was the person that bootlegged it. Absolutely no one believed him…
A fantastical flurry of energy. Minus one star for creepy train man song.
7.5/10. I don't mind live albums. The Who is a legendary band! :)
Fun live album of all the hits and some extra. Solid crowd work.
This album was pretty decent. Felt like a really intimate show. Great performance.
Started the first song, a banger at 6 am leaving for work. Quite the anthem down the street. A bit of a lull in the middle, then another couple of bangers. Not bad. 4
Very solid. Most tracks were 4/5. I can see why this is regarded as the best live album of all time. Daltry’s vocals are absolutely on point and the instrumentation is second to none. They were so incredibly tight.
one of the better live performance recordings I really vibed with this as background music
Not bad..
60/70’s rock, raw live performance, Im a sucker for that stuff. Sounds like heavily influenced by Hendrix. This version of “my generation” is solid
Enjoyed but suspect it’s a bad introduction; familiarity with original arrangements probably makes up most of the impact here.
Incredible live performance
Distilled into 6 cuts (3 of which aren’t even their own songs) ‘Live At Leeds’ is 37 minutes of awesome unrestrained destructive bluesy hard rock power with not an ounce of fat or filler. While the expanded versions of this record released over the years are still great and give context to the rest of the Leeds gig, it’s still the concise original released version that represents the Who at their absolute best live.
I listened to the expanded version and other than the first song, “Heaven and Hell”, I really enjoyed this. I am a long time fan of this band, but had never listened to all of this album. Like many live albums, a couple of the cuts seem unnecessarily long and drawn out, but I still give it a solid 4 out of 5. If I stumble on a used copy at an antique or record store, I will probably pick it up.
I knew what I was getting with The Who but I don’t think I’ve listened to any of their live albums before, though, I didn’t actually feel like it was live while listening most the time. Would be great in the car on a road trip!
Solid
Pretty old rock sound, I like it. One of the few live albums that actually make me feel like the concert was good enough to make an album out of it. Stand-out: Magic Bus (but find the studio version)
Loved it.
Increíble, un concierto de The Who en 1970, gran atmósfera captada en un álbum en vivo.
Erg nice
Great album, although I remember it being much more rocky…
Saw this was next and my heart sunk...for whatever reason, I've never really gelled with The Who and I'm not a big fan of live albums. How wrong could I have been!
A titanic showing by a titanic band. Big, nasty, and melodic, minimalist in setup and maximalist in scope, with some killer musicianship. Best song: My Generation Medley
Incredible live album from one of the greatest rock bands of all time
There have been expanded editions since, but this release being 6 songs and considered one of the greatest liv albums is WILD. I had to look it up and make sure Pete Townshend was the only guitar player--these dudes made NOISE.
Thoughts before listening: One of the best live albums of all time. The Who are an absolute monster on this recording which occurred during their best period. Review: This is the Who at their loudest and most powerful, and it makes for an exciting listen. That being said, it can be a little sloppy and chaotic which likely would be better received in person than on a recording. Still though, I'm a fan of live albums, and this is a must own as a document of one of the best live rock bands of all time at the peak of their powers. Best songs are "Substitute", "Young Man Blues", "Summertime Blues", and "Magic Bus". 4-stars
VERY IMPORTANT - make sure you listen to the original album with only 6 tracks. It eliminates all the more annoying "electric folk" tracks that the Who can drag themselves down with. All the bonus track versions lose a lot of focus. Learn from my mistakes!
For me this started a little slow, but then got a lot better as it moved along. I had never heard Happy Jack or Amazing Journey before but I really loved them. For a live album it was great, the right amount of talking and playing. Plus the songs really flowed into one another and didn't leave a lot of down time to fall out of the music. The My Generation Live Medley was terrific. It is something you expect to get at a Live concert and it was a great rendition.
When The Who are in their “Tommy” style I can’t get on with them, but this is a right rollicking gig. You can hear the stripped-back rock and roll, the recording is phenomenal for a live set, Keith Moon is (figuratively) on fire and the setlist is a riot of their own stuff and a great pick of covers. A great reset for them.
the guitar is so good maybe ill listen to their other albums i like this one alot my favorite song: heaven and hell
Hard rock. I listened the the full extended version but still had a blast. What a talented band. Amazing energy and great performances. 4/5
Rock n Roll baby
Classic live album. Setlist isn't perfect but otherwise excellent.
Some very cool stuff on here
Good live band... So much jamming.
album na zywo, lepiej posluchac oryginaly
I listened to the 37 minute original and I loved it. No filler, none of my favourite Who songs either, just an awesome show, some very great drumming from Mr. Moon, and practically zero crowd noise.
I don’t usually like live rock albums, but the original LP of this one is tight. (The expanded editions you can find on streaming are overlong with too much banter.)
I don't like The Who very much at all, but this is a very tight live performance and deserves a good rating.
Great album. The Who really come alive in this live setting. Especially the drums . While spellbinding - I could use perhaps 10 percent less. Great album nonetheless. Id give it 4.5 if I could...
Great production quality for a live album from the 70s
Great live album.
Live albums are really hit and miss for me. Is there any extra significance to this one? Apparently so as this was the only one with their primary lineup, and it does have quite a few improv jams on some songs, generally smooth transitions, and minimal distractions from the crowd noises.. Still early enough to not have all their hits, but in some ways that helps make it a little more special as maybe some of these tracks were left off following tours. The other thing with live tracks is I prefer them in the context of their record and not randomly in a playlist of studio tracks so if the full album isn't great to listen to in one go, then I'd probably leave the it behind. Fortunately this album is worth playthrough, and that is the best attribute of a great live album. Favorite track "Magic Bus" 4/5
i listened to the 77 minute one, which included included interaction with the audience and additional tracks. the drums are amazing on this on both the bonus and original tracks. i know those tracks were cut in the original due constraints in space, but i wonder why tracks like heaven and hell was cut because i think it easily outshines original tracks like summertime blues and shakin all over. nevertheless, the whole experience with everything together really made it feel like i was listening to it live too. tracks were pretty fun except for a quick one while hes away that one sucked to listen through. 4 personal favs: heaven and hell, i cant explain, young man blues, magic bus
Yes!
Alkaa kutkuttamaan the Who... Pitäisikö kuuntelu aloittaa..
ooooo i like The Who. already liking the sound of this . that guitarrrrr so good cool 3.9
Super high energy live album, worth being labeled as a Who essential
Great show. It was fun to try to imagine being there.
Classics. I always liked The Who more than The Rolling Stones.
Rockin
einmal mehr rockt es ziemlich mit The Who. tolles album, ziemlich „clean“ für eine live-session.
A Quick One While He’s Away - love
I’ve gained more appreciation for live albums, this being no exception. It was so energetic and fun.
one of the better live albums on this list well produced and shit 4.3/5
Sophistication? Sophistication? Don’t talk to me about sophistication, I’ve BEEN to Leeds!
This whole tour made me notice I'm a big Who fan
