Synth pop is not my thing, couldn't finish this album. However, I feel that Pet Shop Boys deserve credit for the contributions to pop culture and 90s music. I may have more opinions when "Behaviour" comes around. Overall: 5/10

Very gay for sure. And very cheesy. Yet very memorable lyrics. And very witty one-liners. Also, very sophisticated chord progressions. Yet very unnecessary inclusion in the original list when there's already *actually* in it (and also, I think, *Behaviour*). Very bummed to say so. 3/5 for the purposes of this very list. Which translates to a 8/10 grade for more very general puuposes (5 + 3). Well, it's a damn sight better than the other two on the list, that's for sure. Not that that's saying all that much. My 10-year-old daughter said of this album, "It kinda sounds like video game or cartoon music" and I'm not sure whether that says more about Pet Shop Boys or about the cartoons she watches. It's not good either way. That said, it's far more digestible than pretty much anything else I've heard from them. The synths are less primitive, the songs more self-aware, and the performances moderately less pretentious.

I was looking forward to this and then let down. I guess I'm just not a Pet Shop boy.

this is ruining my night. I rage quit the relaxing game I was playing because I couldn't, and didn't even want to, focus on anything because this music is so fucking stupid. It's going to be a struggle to finish this, worse than REM and The Cure certainly. Dreaming of the queen is listenable. to speak is a sin is fine when the singer isnt singing. Skimming through must because I just couldnt. 2 songs on the whole album that didn't make me want to run to the nearest living thing and kill it.

Not really a style of music that I frequently enjoy. Was an odd mix of upbeat dance type music and some really sad lyrics. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Whoever put this list together is in love with pet shop boys. This is the third one so far. They're not that important of a band, and this one isn't even that good.

This is a fun synth pop album. You won’t find anything deep and meaningful, but you’ll find a good time, and that’s all I’m looking for.

This is what I think when I hear 80s synth pop, the first song is great but then seems quite repetitive in rhythm and song structure in general.

Not my favorite collection of songs but I’ll definitely check out their other work.

I grew up when the Pet Shop Boys were on the radio pretty regularly. I’m glad I heard that stuff (Actually, Behavior) before this as I’d have the impression that they are not a good band. It pains me to say it about any of their work, but this is kinda crap.

Having knowingly only heard one Pet Shop Boys song before, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with this album. I’m still not entirely sure how I would classify it. Once I was a few songs in, the vocals started to grow on me. Unfortunately, the instrumentals didn’t fare as well. It’s a product of the times certainly, but it hasn’t aged very gracefully. The tone of the album never really landed either, with some songs feeling decidedly pop-y, while others were backed by momentous, cinematic instrumentation. Not something I’d seek out to listen to again, apart from showing off some of the more interesting tracks to see how others are impressed. This album feels like the soundtrack of a Pokemon movie, and that is a very high compliment. I can just picture the montages - Ash encountering some random trainer and having a battle, Brock cooking food and everyone eating together after the fight, now the best of friends. Great vibes!

I can’t believe I got Pet Shop Boys 2 days in a row. The lyrics and arrangement is even more cheesy than the last one (Behaviour). This reminds me of suburban malls in the early 90s but not in a good way. Go West is mildly anthemic so kind of ok I guess.

There's a joyousness to this record that is infectious, even if some of the subject matter can be dark (man, I love that twist in "The Theater"). It sounds like the Pet Shop Boys trying to be the missing link between disco, house, and the Madchester scene, and I'm really here for it. Favorite tracks: "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing", "A Different Point of View", "The Theater"

Another good opportunity to mention The Sparks documentary. This isn't as good as Behaviour but I really enjoyed the song writing

There’s an amusing disconnect on a lot of these songs between the hyper, exuberant club beats and the subdued, often disaffected vocals. Pet Shop Boys let the music carry all the energy while they cooly sing on top. This album falls into the ‘I respect it but don’t personally love it’ box. Great beats, fun music, interesting lyrics. Just not something I’m going to put on a lot on my own. Wow “Go West” is awesome. I’m gonna save that one. I love when artists save the best song for the album closer. Such a boss move.

Wow this one grabs you right from the start. I love that intro and man I love the chord progression. I feel like I accomplished something? Like I'm walking away from the explosion at the end of the film. Super crisp production too, even more surprising for 1993. I hate to hate on this, but the vocal timbre leaves a bit to be desired. There's really only so much a singer can do with their voice, and I really try to not let vocal tone really pull down any ratings here for that reason, but his voice is just a bit too nasally for me to enjoy without imagining how much better this music would be with a different timbre. I like it. I had fun with it. It was fantastical and triumphant and at times cheesy.

Man this is definitely not my type of music. I really don't think the instrumentation is good at all. Another reviewer described them as the "bridge between disco and house" and I guess that would be a pretty accurate description. It's definitely very poppy and reliant on electronic experimentation. Not my vibe at all.

"Very" is the fifth studio album by Pet Shop Boys. It was a shift from the subdued electronic pop of their previous album "Behaviour" to richly instrumented dance arrangements. Pet Shop Boys are Neil Tennant (vocals) and Chris Lowe (keyboards. Vocals). This is known as Tennant "coming out" album as he publicly discussed his homosexuality. The Pet Shop Boys produced the album and, commercially, it became their most successful album reaching #1 in the UK. A loud synth open begins "Can You Forgive Her?" Horn sounds, a pop beat, a synth catchy melody. Tennant with forceful lyrics. It's a about a young man's humiliation when a girlfriend accuses him of being in love with someone from his childhood. "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing" has a piano and more of a dance beat. Another catchy melody. An event in a person's life opens him up. "Liberation" is lush with horn sounds. It's a dreamy dance ballad. A Carribean beat of sorts. This album is off to a great start..three for three with great songs. Piano keys and a spacey synth begin "Yesterday When I Was Mad." It then changes with a faster, busier pace and electronic beats. This is different. The stresses of touring and being away from loved ones. A nice job of the music capturing the lyrical theme. "The Theatre" starts out in a majestic way with string sounds. Just beautiful and lush. About snobdom. Maybe my favorite song on the album. The album closes with a Village People cover "Go West." Electronic beat. Smooth. Creative background vocals mimicking the Village People. This reinterpretation is like a theatrical production and a lot of fun. This is an excellent album. It's extremely well-constructed and crafted....great production and pop of the highest order. No bad songs or filler. There's a variety of beats with mutliple sounding instruments including horns, piano, strings and synths. Lush is a apt description. An album that apparently got lost in the US with all the grunge at the time. One worth going back for.

3. Speak is a sin is fire though.

The quintessential 90's 🌈 club music. I'll always consider Pet Shop Boys a one hit wonder, and this album doesn't even have the hit.

There were some good songs in this album, and some i never want to hear again.

PSB are fast becoming one of my very favourite acts of all time, and this album blew me away. There simply isn't anyone else who can combine this level of music confidence with lyrical vulnerability, all packed up in the most listenable, danceable package. I didn't know many of the songs on this album, but it's now a firm favourite.

Pure Pet Shop Boys, but nothing really stood out for me.

At the time I found PSB very dull but am growing to like them - maudlin lyrics over orchestrated disco beats is quite the mood. The Queen dream is suitably bizarre, Yesterday… is like modern Coward and Go West is surprisingly moving - the chorus singing is excellent. A success.

I find this to be awful because it feels designed to be inoffensive and bland. I read the description and the context and that makes it even worse IMO. It’s techno and a coming out party at once and it’s less likely to make me dance than anything I’ve listened to in a while. And, it seems pretty generic and not super introspective from a sexuality standpoint. Really disappointing.

Very is Pet Shop Boys formula at its best: the harmonies, synths, nostalgia, and rhythms that made this band popular. Listening to it is fun. You can feel how it boosts the vibe wherever you are. I am not sure how influential this album is musically speaking, maybe some Big Beat artists picked ideas from them, who knows? But what I’m sure is that Pet Shop Boys has a special place in the gay culture pantheon, so you can tell the weight of their music. Super recommended

This is the type of music that plays when you’re having a sleep paralysis dream and you’re demon is the Little Lad doing his Little Lad dance at varying speeds to these songs while he says nothing. He only stares at you with those cold black eyes and that haunting smile. I think it's cute that this album has been called the "coming out" record for Neil Tennant. It's not my preferred genre of music but I do understand the appeal of these boys of the pet shops.

Between this and Behavior, Pet Shop Boys absolutely eat their spot on this list. I wasn’t familiar with them at all but they’re great.

Oh yes, this is absolutely what I want out of a Pet Shop Boys album. Lyrically as serious as Behaviour, Very goes back to the Pet Shop Boys synth heavy sounds, but with a more dance-heavy sound. Each song here is a winner, bookended by the strong "Can You Forgive Her?" and the gentle "Go West." The Pet Shop Boys are masters of synth pop, and this album shows that they were far from being done with their musical ingenuity, even as the world of music changed at rapid fire pace around them. I absolutely loved listening to this, and I can't wait to the third and final Pet Shop Boys album on this list.

Very very distinctive Pet Shop Boys sound. Heavy rhythm combined with synth and soft vocals. None of their most popular hits, but really good.

A very approachable enjoyable electronically dancy pop album. Though songs like Can You Forgive Her and Go West really stand out, the rest of the album is strong, just not really catchy enough to be hits.

3.5 - An honestly gay synth-pop record that maintains an energetic dance beat, and is underpinned by substantive lyrics that convey subtle emotion. The beats sound dated but I appreciate that these songs rarely dwell on their architecture - unlike many pop records, they don't announce key changes or bash you over the head with bridges that lead to choruses. Standouts: "To Speak Is A Sin", "Dreaming of the Queen" (though I find the premise of a dream encounter with the royals utterly ridiculous).

I have always liked Pet Shop Boys' radio hits, like 'Go West' from this album, but a whole arecord full of simple, commercialised, now dated sounding songs is too much for me. I thought I would like this album more but I was clearly wrong.

I definitely think the reason this is rated so low is because of the fact the pet shop boys already have too many albums on here, this album in my opinion though is honestly great, I think 4/5 because it would’ve made a better 10 song album than 12 but overall it’s great.

There's 3 pet shop boys albums on the list. PSB definitely belong on the list, but not 3 albums and not this one. It's not bad, it's not great. Favorite song: Yesterday When I Was Mad. But really none of the songs are very memorable.

2.5 i struggled to rate this in the same way i found it tricky to rate the daft punk and jerry lee lewis albums. i generally really like the pet shop boys because my mum does and so while none of these songs in particular are nostalgic to me, the band in general is and i would have enjoyed listening to this with my mum here. however, i don't think i would listen to any of these again out of choice, hence a middle rating. i think one of their more popular albums may have scored higher for me.

Neil Tennant explained that they chose title of this album because it's *very* Pet Shop Boys: "it's very up, it's very hi-energy, it's very romantic, it's very sad, it's very pop". That is the perfect summary of the record. It's everything that is great about the Pet Shop Boys, but bolder and more confident than on previous records. It is *very* excellent indeed. I was tempted to give it a 3 - I’ve never liked Pet Shop Boys but I didn’t mind listening to this. But then realising that the “stand out single” is a cover? Knock it down to a 2, I’m just not a fan.

I love the Pet shop boys, but this album did feel a little bit boring and repetitive at times. Had a few good songs though!

Largely forgettable synth-pop. Enjoyable enough, but there weren't any stand-out songs for me (no, not even Go West). I actually started this album so many times and didn't get past the first two songs before being distracted, so I like those two simply because of familiarity. Not a ringing endorsement, eh?

Love the Pet Shop Boys, but there is an unfortunate sameness to the tracks on this record. Go West was a strong finisher, but by then I'd gotten a little numb to the beat. I think the issue is my listening environment - I am not at a rave or a club, this album's natural habitat. For that I'll grade on a curve . . .

Given that this was the tail end of PSBs 'imperial phase', this album still stands up to scrutiny very well.

Not a bad synthpop album at all that has a couple of killer tracks like Can You Forgive Her and Yesterday. The album is front loaded and gets a little better right at the end but the late middle is fairly weak. The album also feels a little long which means cutting out of a couple of the weaker songs would’ve helped a lot. Still this was fun to listen to; it’s extremely uplifting, perhaps too much in some places.

The only exposure I've had to Pet Shop Boys before today was their song "West End Girls", which was featured in the game Grand Theft Auto V. I enjoyed that song, so we will see how this full record of their stuff goes. Their style of music is like electronica meets disco and synth pop. It is very easy to dance to. The themes sung about seem almost melancholic, which is quite a contrast to the upbeat dance vibe. Overall, a great record today. There wasn't really a dud on the album. I will definately listen again! An entire album of hits. From the first to the last song. One of the best Pet Shop Boys albums. And it's also worth knowing the album Relentless that came out with Very in a special edition.

Would be cooler if this was sped up by 50% and sung by an anime girl. That would make me want to smoke a fat blunt and pledge allegiance to the glorious UK of GB&NI. Don't make any sudden movements, lest the Goblin King awakens.

Did not age well - I got some Right Said Fred drum vibes.

I think my biggest problem was the vocals. The voice sounded a little disinterested at that times. I couldn't tell if the singer was not interested, or if that was just the voice he was going for. The music for the most part was ok. The hidden track got VERY repetitive after a while. There was obviously a good deal of craft in the music that was made, but honestly it just didn't move me.

I do recall when this album came out, videos all over MTV and Go West was a huge hit. I still have a soft spot for that song. After that, this album is a bit too dance sappy. Don't know what I mean? Listen to I Wouldn't Normally Do this Kind of Thing. Sounds like decent lyrics, but the beat is too uhh tiss. Can You Forgive Her is probably the one other song that I really enjoyed. Powerful beats that match the depth of lyrics. Maybe Different Point of View too. And at least To Speak is a Sin went with a different sad style. But it's mostly average fare waiting for Go West to complete the album.

I felt that this album had a familiar sound but I was unable to recognize who they sounded like. Heir style with the soft singing and electronic beats has a modern style yet also feels like it was dated at the same time. Very melancholy yet upbeat. It was like a more depressed lcd sound system. Overall it was okay but nothing worth revisiting. 4.6/10

All killer, no filler. In context, this album being released around the time one member of PSB came out publicly adds heavy weight to the lyrics of many songs. Yet the music remains upbeat and bright throughout. Hard to pick a favorite, but I’ll say “To Speak Is a Sin.” 5/5

The 80's meets late 90's boy bands. Pretty forgettable pop.

A total musical dumpster fire but at least it’s a silly one. +1 for making me chuckle multiple times at how over the top whimsical and goofy this thug managed to be while trying to be 100% serious.

I didn't like this one. Way too long for what it is. I saw that it was British synth pop but I still expected something else for some reason. This was not my jam.

My brother had this and other pet shop albums. It brings me back. Although they have one million albums, I think their only recognizable song is West end girl, which unfortunately isn't on this album.

Decent music overall, nothing jumped out definitively. My first impression is fairly neutral not bad not great. Just ok. I may give this one another listen and I'd still be open to listening to their other albums.

A THIRD Pet Shop Boys album? Considering I gave the other two a 3/5, it’s safe to say I went into this not expecting a lot. Where the others had some standout tracks and strong ideas but suffered from a bit of inconsistency, this was just not very good from start to finish

Not exactly in love with this. I mean it's fine, but it didn't blow me away nor did I particularly care for any of their songs and especially the singing. Still has an 80s sound with a 90s fusion, so I guess that's nice. 6/10.

I loved this album it feels like a predecessor to all of the 90s and early 2000s techno music that I grew up on and it has a lot of elements that very much lead me to believe that it influenced them heavily.

Sitting at work stressed about all the things I didn't finish yesterday does not make me want to Unntiss Unnntissss like the Pet Shop Boys do... Glad they came out tho, that's cool.

About time for some club dancing music. I think the secret track go west made me smile the most. Feels like a rally call for a fun gay party. I also feel like if I did drag this music would either be a part of my warmup or actual routine.

Love it! "Go West" is the first Pet Shop Boys song I recall knowing was a Pet Shop Boys song, though I'm sure I heard earlier ones and was unaware at the time. They are a band I seldom seek out and have nearly never owned anything by but am absolutely thrilled whenever they come on. It's hard to be in a bad mood listening to Pet Shop Boys! "Yesterday When I Was Mad" was a big highlight for me this listen.

Synthpop and dance-pop bops...sorta. To me, their earlier albums bore the moody, cold magic that I look for in this field of pop music. More of a specific mood listen as it, for better or worse, sounds of the time where Eurobeat/Eurodance began crossing over into the mainstream. A harmless, fun listen overall, but you can do better in the realm of synthpop.

The pet shop boys have better stuff than this but I would say this is their median work and it’s a good representation of them. I liked the album. Stuff between three and four stars because I did download some of the music but not all of it.

I think if I were British and not an infant in 1993 I would likely have a higher rating but alas, the Pet Shop Boys are corny in the unaware way that brits veer into so often. I mean they're always the guy in the big Pharell hat and not-Peter-Gabriel to me - and his voice is too nasal for my taste. It feels like what Mr. Bean listens to when he's in a funk. Nothing about the album is BAD necessarily, it just made me wish I was listening to more interesting synth pop, and it feels dated to my ear in a way that Duran Duran;s best stuff for example does not. My REAL hot take is that Future Islands is basically Pet Shop Boys 2.0. Objectively its closer to 3 but subjectively it was a bit of a chore for me, like eating boiled vegetables, so a 2 from me.

Very close to giving this a 5, but just a bit top heavy and didn’t quite stick the landing. This is one of those bands I’ve heard of a bunch but never actually listened to. Great album overall. You can see the influence on bands like the magnetic fields. A Different Point of View was my fave.

One of the Pet Shop Boys best albums. More pop dance than the previous discs. In addition, the lyrics are actually moving (as opposed to the seemingly witty snippets that make up the prior albums). All that said, I think of Pet Shop Boys as more of a singles band. 3.5 stars if available, but I am grading up today (points for the actually good Village People cover).

This album sees the Pet Shop Boys embracing Neil Tennant’s homosexuality. The result is one of their most consistent and cohesive albums. The mix of synth pop and club music is driving, danceable, yet provides a fitting medium for Tennant’s vocals. Despite the running time, I found that this album didn’t drag on unlike some of their other work. The highlight for me was the final track, a fantastic cover of the Village People’s ‘Go West.’

'Knowing' pop is the worst kind of pop. Spend the time on better tunes rather than tipping the wink to irony and worrying about not seeming 'cool'. Probably a different audience, but St Etienne do this kind of thing SO much better. The start of the second (and third) track sounds like daytime tv show intro music. I have never 'got' Pet Shop Boys and this very much reinforced that feeling.

This is lush, from start to finish. You need to be in a PSB frame of mind and embrace the campness right from the start. There's a sugar rush feel throughout the songs. The album is effortless with the delivery and production all leaving a feeling of calmness. We need more intelligent pop music. Very good.

I used to really like Pet Shop Boys. In fact, I still do, but this album is far from their best. They peaked early in their career and this album seems as though they're trying to replicate what had come before. I mean, it's still unmistakably Pet Shop Boys, but the spark isn't there anymore. Nothing on this album made an impression at all, it all just floated by, inoffensively enough, but with praactically zero engagement from me.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Behavior, but I really enjoyed this one. Synthy, dancey, and campy. Pet Shop Boys vocals in the past have grated on me a little bit, but I find them much more enjoyable on this record. The hooks are all really sticky, the dance grooves are fun and bouncy, and each song feels like it brings a different vibe to the album without it feeling all over the place. Definitely coming back to this.

This one took me by surprise; I wasn't expecting something so dance-oriented. Regardless, I didn't particularly care for it. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Giving it a 2, but let's call it a 2.5.

Back in the early-mid 2000s I was given a burnt DVD containing (among other things) the entire catalogue of Pet Shop Boys releases. Everything, singles, albums, best of mixes - if it had been released, it was copied there in glorious 320kbps MP3. There were a LOT of Pet Shop Boys tracks - to the point where a random play of mp3s from my selection would pop up with one of them every four of five songs. And I'm afraid that this has rather polluted the Pet Shop Boys for me. They are an important act in the history of electronic music - but this selection is from 1993 when they had broken a not insubstantial amount of ground already. Saying that, I've tried to listen objectively. Is this a good album? No. Is it an important album? Also no. Why is it included on this list? Because Pet Shop Boys. It's the artist, not the album being honoured here. And that's a shame.

"Very" is a very Pet Shop Boys album. To be precise, every song they have ever released sounds so much Pet Shop Boy-ish, that there is no way you can make a mistake.my usual experience with this album: Song 1 - Woah, great song! They have done it again! Song 2 to the end - Hey, wait a minute now, isn't that the same song all over again? Obviously I'm exaggerating, but the sentiment stays is there. I think that the main issue why they sound so repetitive is in vocal - Neil Tennant's vocal range is basically a one note all over. It sounds great on singles, but whole album is just too much to bare. "Very" average album.

Two Pet Shop Boys albums on this list is a surprise - and not in a good way.

Horns reach out and the darkness pulls you a little deeper into these songs, straightforward achievements for the Pet Shop Boys. The project feels slight at the beginning, but something is churning at the center. That doesn't make Very cohere into anything remarkable, but the album is a fine entry in a fine catalog. Very British, very gay, and what more could you ask for from the band?

I know that this isn't anything special for a lot of people, but I loved this. I've heard a few Pet Shop Boys songs before and I really like those, so I was excited for this album. Rightly so, apparently, because I'm giving this album a high rating. It may be generic or cheesy to some, but it's very up my alley. I'm not gonna act like it's anything more than what it is. Still, it's getting a 5. I like his voice; it's kind of soft. It can be a little whiny at points, but I don't really mind that here. It's pretty hard to pick favourite songs, but I believe my favourite songs are Liberation, Can You Forgive Her?, and Young Offender.

Did I love this? Or am I just so used to listening to stuff I don't care for that anything I actually like, I feel very enthusiastic about? Either way, this was a fun listen. I've been ambivalent towards the Pet Shop Boys in the past but I dig them doing 90s pop. If anyone reading this likes this album and wants to hear something similar, this reminded me a lot of Sparks' album Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins. Go for the deluxe 3hr edition as it has all the best songs within the bonus tracks section.

I am happy to be done with this one, I hated it. I have no problem with pop or synth, they actually had some full instrumentals at times but man oh man this just didn’t click with me. I’m sure I’ve heard songs by the Pet Shop Boys before but I didn’t recognize any of these songs and the vocal delivery just bothered me. The lyrics were just as lame as the vocals. The only song I liked was Yesterday When I Was Mad, it sounds like an MGMT track so I don’t know maybe some of their other work is better than this album but this album get a 2 from me

When multiple albums of an artist are on this list, we truly get a chance to hear the artist's musical progression. I previously listened to and adored their earlier album Actually, and I was subsequently nervous that I wouldn't enjoy very on the same level. Well, I shouldn't have been concerned! I absolutely love their music, end of sentence. The Pet Shop Boys' usual synth pop sound is present here, but they've expanded. There's a techno-like sound on "A Different Point of View"--there's even a smidge of a smooth jazz in "To Speak Is A Sin". And multiple songs here keep them on the disco train. This album is a great balance of Pet Shop Boys staying synth but exploring other genres. I get some of the same vibes from Actually, but Very is able to stand on its own and be appreciated for itself. They've kept their heart on this album, too. The hidden track "Postscript" is so tender despite its short length. A good way to describe Pet Shop Boys, I think, is beautifully melancholy. "Dreaming of the Queen" and "The Theatre" follow that description. Somehow, PSB manage to use synth and disco to make music with such feeling. I definitely want to mention Neil Tennant's sexuality. I have always admired pet shop boys' gender neutral love songs; most artists just do not go that route. I believe it allows any gender, any sexuality to enjoy any song. I do think Tennant's sexuality encourages him and Chris Lowe to write their songs in such a way. But really, only a queer person could write "Liberation": "Take my hand/don't think of obligations/now, right now/your love is liberation."

I haven't heard anything else quite like this on the project thus far. Pet Shop Boys again straddle two worlds on this album -- 80s new wave and 90s synth-pop, and you can clearly hear the influences of both here. But on this album, now in 1993, the synth-pop sounds are heavier than ever. Honestly, this album felt like one big gay club anthem, and rightly so, as one of the members used this album as a coming out of sorts. In this regard, the album is full of fun bangers very fitting of the time and the purpose. I like this Pet Shop Boys album about the same as the other PSB album on this project, just for different reasons. These guys definitely have a history of straddling 80s and 90s throughout both of these albums, and that is fun to hear!

It's the perfect PSB album. Where the with and the music match up - if I Wouldn't Normally Do This Lind of Thing isn't the perfect evocation of that giddy feeling at the start of a relationship then love is a myth and we should all give up. Go West is iconic. It's all ace

The more dance forward songs were not enjoyed by me but the other songs were okay. happy and sad and energetic and lyrically meaningful. I think I liked To Speak Is a Sin the most. First time listening to a Pet Shop Boys album begining to end. Definitely enjoyable. Strong start, fell off a bit in the middle but certainly a good album.

Now that I think about it, I think I remember this coming out (sorta, I was 6 at the time) because my sister and aunt listened to “go west” and said something about their “new” stuff was good… well I cannot like this music, I hate the beat and the drums and the voice. The mentioned song is quite catchy but the record overall is lame.

An apt title. If you know the PSB you know what you'll get and this album simply reinforces. Their expansive and sweeping soundscape is augmented with many more twiddly bits. It is strong fare but nothing really stands out. Still guaranteed to get you onto the dance floor.

Early '90s dance. I wasn't expecting much even though I've enjoyed their hits, including Go West. There is something quite beguiling about Tennant's vocals that elevates the repetitive backing well above most examples of the genre. Dreaming of The Queen and Yesterday When I Was Mad provide a 1-2 punch, both lyrically and musically.

Best Song: The Theatre. Unexpectedly grandiose dance music. Worst Song: To Speak is a Sin. The song that plays as you realize your Tinder date was being unexpectedly literal when they said you were looking like a snack. Patrick Bateman's ringtone. Overall: Consuming, expansive, complex dance music that comes at you as a wall of sound with absolutely no soul. But hey, I mean there are times when I don't feel like having a soul. Whenever that happens, I'll listen to this album.

It's quite surprising which bands attract an almost militant following. You know, the fan who'll spend three hours barking in your ear about how their favourite band is better than sliced Jesus, with the monomania of a vegan describing abbatoir practices during Christmas dinner. One mate of mine regularly sent me links to B-sides of Europe throughout the late 2000s (yes, Final Countdown Europe). I've met Proclaimers fans who insist the Frankie Boyle lookalikes are as essential as the Clash or Lou Reed. Me, I have my obsession with the Happy Mondays, but that doesn't count because the Happy Mondays are genuinely one of the greatest bands of all. But the most widespread fanatics that take me by surprise are those of the Pet Shop Boys. Yes, there is the factor that the Pet Shop Boys have purposefully provided solace and joy to gay men with their music throughout their career, especially with regards to the AIDS crisis (the predominant gay elements of Very chime with the singer and lyricist Neil Tennant coming out publicly in 1994, which was hardly a paradigm-shifting revelation; Chris Lowe, the keyboardist, has never publicly discussed his sexuality, not that he has any obligation to). And apparently, the Pet Shop Boys are the most successful duo in UK music history (so says the 1999 Guinness Bok of Records, according to Wikipedia). But the fanboy acclaim that the Pet Shop Boys has always received has always slightly baffled me, and I have always known exactly why. The Pet Shop Boys are mannerist. Their art is the honing of an aesthetic that is divorced from the emotive and instead directed towards the knowing and disaffecting. More simply, their music is clever rather than moving. The only fault I find to their music is that it leaves my soul completely untouched. To me, the album Very demonstrates without flaw the coldness of the Pet Shop Boys. The music seems stuck in 1987, but seemingly by design; 1987 represents their "imperial phase", a term coined by Tennant to describe a band's critical and commerical peak. So we get lots of Hi-NRG bassless melodies in 1993, and the effect is reminiscent of a middle-aged uncle tagging along with you young kids as you head off to celebrate your A-levels. Yes, Uncle Neil, you had your glories during the industrial revolution, but now's the time for we slick hepcats. This aspect screams out during their ecstasy anthem I Wouldn't Normally do This Kind of Thing; the title tells you that they're generational tourists, but the Pet Shop Boys know that's the case. This is the alienating savviness of the Pet Shop Boys. I can understand, say, how cleverly they sing of the restraint of passion in To Speak is a Sin, but that cleverness dilutes any passion within the song to a rubbery acknowledgement, which you may say is the point, but I still feel little from it aside from friction. Expand that cleverness over an album, and my only sensation is lack of blood in my heart. Of course, the Pet Shop Boys are smart enough to explain every one of their artistic choices, and smart enough to counter every one of my criticisms about their intellectualizations. And I am smart enough to reply back cogently, and thus we are at the sticking point. As a result, Very gets 3 stars to end the stalemate. You might like it. I prefer Erasure.

Much better than I thought as I was dreading it.

The first four Pet Shop Boys albums are great, full of instant-classic singles. But the quality drop begins here. In my memory, Very was still a good album (4 stars) and listening to it again, the album still has its moments. But the songs are not so memorable and the production is pretty dated (unlike the previous four albums which still sound fresh).

It is quite possible that there are some decent songs on this album, but I simply could not get past the terrible overall sound and production to find out. Strong dislike.

This is like if the Pet Shop Boys gathered a bunch of royalty-free synth music, layered on a few instruments here & there, and wrote cheesy (but sometimes, cute) lyrics to match. It's generic, commercial, and very forgettable. There is a lot of good synth pop and new wave, but this is not part of that list.

I admire the PSB though I've never listened to an whole album. Went though a bit of a rollercoaster. The songs are so well crafted and produced yet by midway I felt a bit ambivalent....then i approached the end and I feel a bit hooked on the sheer joy/melancholy of it all. Bit torn.

This was like listening to a woke Sega master system. So much 8-bit, so much awareness. I felt it couldn't connect any more with the gay community and then Go West came on. Thoroughly enjoyable.

The Pet Shop Boys really are very good - uplifting melodies, a lovely interplay between major and minor keys, Neil Tennant's ethereal voice. Good listen.

The first few songs on this album had plenty of similarities to Postal Service. Wonder how much Pet Shop Boys influence their sound. There is some decent songwriting on this album but it is hidden by some pretty bland synth and drum machine combos that show their age. Hard to get beyond that so the album felt pretty monotone.

This is a good collection of dance/pop songs, but I much prefer the Pet Shop Boys' earlier albums. True: There are some heavy hitters like Can You Forgive Her, Liberation, I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing, and - of course - Go West. But some of the other songs dont't quite feel up to par here. Plus, the sound is heavily anchored in the early 90s. Still, a good effort, and probably the last album I would count as belonging to the classic PSB era. 4/5

6/8/2022 - ALBUM #132 Today's Album: "Very" by Pet Shop Boys - This generator has been slowly introducing me to the world of new-wave and synth-pop with a records like that Brian Eno project or parts of that Cafe Bleu record, but this feels like a true introduction to what makes this genre so likeable and fun. I think if I am to comment on anything first, it would be the production. There way these powerful, yet ethereal synth chords pair with the super melodic bass, a quiet guitar playing these really funky lines, and a straightforward piano make these really amazing soundscapes for the auxiliary percussion and leading synths to just have fun over. There are also a lot of random synths throughout the mix that add to this really funky robotic feeling throughout the project. The vocal performance at first seemed like it worked well for the vibe of the project but I didn't see it as very impressive. However, once I looked up the members of the band and found out the lead singer is a guy, it became obvious how impressive the chops on this vocalist were. I think overall, though, it's the songwriting that really get me to love this album. Each song has this really tight structure to it and although it makes it sound very commercial at some points, I think it overall leads to very memorable songs. It helps that the choruses are EXTREMELY catchy and that the lyricism is very unique (holding up very well today in my opinion). Yes it's cheesy at moments; yes it's pretty overtly queer, but it stay's in this sweet spot of feeling relatable and doesn't take itself very seriously in the best way. I think there are good handful of tracks here that don't hold up as well as others in terms of the song writing overall, but I still enjoy what's going on throughout those tracks musically and sonically. The flow of the album is also really good, making it feel less like an album purely for radio and more like something they made intentionally. Overall, this is an album with a fantastic vibe overall and a ton of great songs, just with a few songs that bog things down a fair bit. Give this one a listen if you like ear candy and love a good synth sound. Wow what a surprise. Another mediocre new wave/synth pop album. This was exactly average just like all of these kinds of albums. I'm only about 350 albums into this list so I'm looking forward to rating another 300 of these.

Pet Shop Boys at their happiest and most energetic, a stark contrast to the melancholy slow nature of their prior Behaviour. These are club tracks one after the other, taking strong inspiration from the ongoing techno movements. The whole album is enjoyable, but the synths don't feel as innovative or interesting as their previous albums, maybe because of my limited listening to techno leads this to sound generic. The highlight to me is the vocals... it's probably a top fusion of 90s pop and techno, but I was hoping to be impressed. I'm also not a fan of the sharp transitions. 1st June 2022 Listened on the way in and out of the office. Did a bit of cleaning and moving things into the front room then watched stranger things. Camp and bouncy, popping drums and lounging synths. Great fun.

Apparently, the 1001 book's author was very into electronic (and related synth styles) music when he/they wrote the book. I'm reaching 1 year following 1 album per day and it's almost impossible to spend 1 month without some electronic album. Well, about this album itself, it's kind of amusing. It's hard for me to say that I liked it, but it's not annoying like some other electronic albums. I hope to learn more about this style and finally get what is all about and why so many electronic/synth albums like this one are important for music history.

This is the fifth album by the English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys. This album shifted their music from subdued electronic pop to instrumented dance-pop tracks. Very performed better commercially than their previous album, and has some of the duo's best songs on it. The album charted high in the UK, but not as high in the US, because at the time grunge and punk rock music was dominating the US charts. I loved the music on this album, and I know I have heard a couple of these songs before. The album contains nostalgic synth-pop / techno music from the 90's, and I have to appreciate any predecessors to modern EDM music. I'll have to remember to listen to this album again sometime - it was that good.

Not something I’d ever listen to again. Few fun dance songs though

One of thosse bands my friend was deep into and I always found pleasant enough. This album follows that, pleasnt enough. Fave: A Different Point Of View
