Reviews (page 8 of 14)

This album would be great to listen to on drugs. I see the psychedelic pop and neo-psychedelia influences. I forgot how many great songs were on this album.

Some real hits in the first half, the second half drags

it’s a fine album. overall sonically bland but has some fun lines, melodies, and lyrics.

Unique, distinct, but never monotonous. That unique sound really hits on a couple of tracks, but others are just not my style.

Time to Pretend is pretty annoying so the rest of the album was really pleasant surprise

Kids and time to pretend

Indie classic

This album is so good

Already love multiple songs on here. Got at least a few radio hits. Not a "perfect" album, so 4/5 stars

Have always enjoyed the hit songs on this album. Good driving music. Fun

Classic! I really wish I could hear the singles off this album for the first time again. But enjoyed hearing it as a whole regardless. One that really caught my attention was "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters". Despite the lack of an Oxford comma in the title, this was was great!

A welcome, familiar listen that benefits from peak high school nostalgia, and not at all in a derogatory way. This LP embodies the changeover from the early aughts' garage rock revival by way of The Strokes into the synth-heavy, dance floor hits that would dominate through the early teens. Warbling synths, scraggly vocals, and a healthy dollop of bass way up in the mix come together to form a surprisingly winning combo – one that has aged surprisingly well. Few other albums capture the time period without feeling dated, and given just how 2007 this album reads it feels almost like an eternal time capsule of the era both in production and instrumentation. While the hits certainly make up most of the album's impact, this thing is relatively rock-solid throughout and never cloys or annoys like other prominent artists of the time. The only thing I have to complain about is the whole thing feels much shorter than I remembered, I could drift along on the rolling synths here all day.

Fun, Dancy, Beatles influence

Funky. Ah to be in 2007 again.

If the Beatles made an album in 2010, it would sound like this.

Vor allem die Hits waren gut. Der Rest ok.

Knew the hits - also enjoy the ones I hadn't heard.

I like it. Parts reminded me a little of LCD Soundsystem, sometimes The Black Keys. It definitely evokes an era, didn't even need to look to know it was the aughts. I really liked The Electric Feel, Kids, and Of Moons, Birds & Monsters; all are worth another listen. Pieces of What was the only one I had to skip.

Strong 4 the good is really good but the bad is kinda bad

I enjoyed the album. Outside of the 2-3 tracks that are super well known, nothing really "stuck" but the fact that it has 2-3 super popular tracks is really strong

Solid, will give 4/5. A high school classic

I’ll admit I never paid too much mind to this album besides Electric Feel for its discoesque feel that gets you to vibe, but the arrangements and lyrics really lifted my eyebrow to ask “is this band for reals?” Dark coming of age stories with happy overtones to disguise the actual pain and sadness of the songs. I think I’m going to be paying more attention to this band and definitely to this album. 4

Les souvenirs 🤩 de très bons titres mais un album inegal

It always bothered me that some people took this album only for the Pop Hits and eschewed everything else as weird and too conceptual. Those pop hits never would've been as big if they weren't tinged with the weirdness that is at the root of MGMT. The eclectic, emotionally activating songs really hit when I discovered this album as I was about to enter high school. I'm terribly biased, but I'm glad this album is on here. Its' combination of courage, appeal, complexity, and uniqueness really stands out and undoubtedly went on to influence many artists and producers

Have never been a huge MGMT fan myself so was welcome to give this album, that I've heard several singles from over the years, a shot. There's a lot of interesting ideas with each track while at the same time being very approachable (the main single tracks in particular), but while I like a bit of the songs here and I respect the album now I've had a good listen I still feel like they aren't my personal thing. Standouts: Time to pretend, Electric Feel, Kids, Pieces of What, Of Moons, Birds & Monsters. Personal Favourite: Of Moons, Birds & Monsters

TOTAL BANGERZZZZ One of my favorite albums, but I really only like the hits - Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, Kids...

I’ve taken too many drugs too many times to too many of these songs to have too many complaints.

Wow I didn’t realize how much mgmt I knew

Love this electronic pop shiz

Some really wonderful tracks but the rest are meh

Well here's a band I've never heard of, and exactly why I signed up for One Album A Day. Good sound and interesting lyrics-glad this one came up in the rotation.

This album has some real classics. I wasn't a fan when this album released, but over the years I've explored their music and found a lot to like about it. The highs on this album are high, but there are a lot of songs I find pretty meh. 3.5/5

These guys wrote most of these tracks, if not all, as a joke on the stupidity of modern pop music. Their lyrics make fun of their contemporaries by fully embracing the ridiculousness of present themes. However, instead of treating the album like the joke it was meant to be, people love it. It isn’t solely for the satirical lyrics, although they help, but also the incredible production and arrangements they’ve created on this project. Their joke was too smart. Oh well, I enjoy it. 4/5

Początek fajnie zaczyna, później zajebiście i dalej zaczyna słabnąć, ale do połowy jest jeszcze bardzo dobrze

Solid album, I was surprised by how many songs I recognized.

Meaningful, not ordinary, loved it!

7/10, pretty unique listening experience. Quite good

It's a GREAT that really feels like an ocean breeze on the coast with how IMMACULATE the vibes are. Only problem is that it feels like a product of its time.

Elektronisk pop, mange bangers! catchy, fed vokal

This is a good album, however it's close to being great. The singles are massive, and oddly, probably some of the weirder stuff on the album. This could be one of my favourites if the album tracks were slightly more strange, but they are quite straight forward. I think the highlight from the non singles is The Youth, which reminds me or something I can't put my finger on. I like The Handshake, Of Moons Bird and Monsters is interesting. Overall I will probably go with a low 4, but there is a chance the album could grow for me, I will likely revisit the album, it's alot more interesting that some of the albums that came out in 2007, I'm feeling generous with a 4/5

great record - love when my album of the day is something that doesn’t sound exactly like everything else

Catchy album through and through.

mgmt's best Favorite Tracks: Time To Pretend, Kids, Electric Feel 4/5

Trippy. Not always my thing, but solid.

Enjoyed listening to this album for the first time. I've heard the hits many times but I think it's a solid album. Easy listen.

Like a lot of the big standout hits off this album "Time to pretend, Electric Feel, Kids". The rest of the album I found to be pretty good too, quite enjoyed this and a bit of a change from what I've been getting generated on this list recently.

Good emotive music, especially for the genre. They really had something here.

Super fun— upbeat, feel good music!

I feel like this album kinda helped bring forth a lot of those techno alt duos we see more and more of

I really like this style of pop/rock. The only one I recognized was ‘Kids’, though I’ve definitely heard ‘Time To Pretend’ before this. I am really lost for words. Uhhhhhhjjhhh…. it’s good?

7.9/10

I do love the first half as it is pure teen nostalgia for me but the last four songs lose me a little bit. But nostalgia is strong!

It was cool. I didn't really love any of the singles, but there's some tracks on the album I thought were cool. I like the overall sound and will seek out their other albums eventually. My favourite song was The Youth.

not my style everyday but very good

Loved this, reminds me of Passion Pit vibes, has a few really nostalgic songs in this album too.

A very fun hipster dance record. Probably not as significant as most of this list but a great album nonetheless.

4. Better than I expected.

I really wanted to hate this. These guys give off such a douchy vibe to me. Don't know them at all so I could be way off base there. Anyway, I enjoyed it. The first half was better than the second, but the whole thing wasn't bad.

I loved this album when it came down and it holds up pretty well. Great songs, great sound and pop sounding as good as it can be.

This really feels like a first album. There's a lot of great musical ideas, a few really great songs, but the bulk of the album is kinda of meandering and aimless from a structural and composition perspective.

Great album . Awful live but as a recorded album solid .

Catchy chords

This is such a great album. Poppy without being saccharine. Very enjoyable.

Not bad

Love a few of the songs on here. Others were just OK.

Better than I expected. A few really good songs.

This is a really good album that got way too much radio play and kind of killed the best songs on it! Still a solid effort and with some distance these tracks still hold up

Three MONSTER hits that are still relevant 15+ years later. The rest of the album is pretty forgettable

i liked the chill vibes of this album, though none of the other songs beyond the three singles I knew jumped out at me after two listens. favorites: electric feel, time to pretend, kids (though I feel like I've heard it enough to last the rest of my lifetime)

One of those albums where I recognised several tracks and liked them, whilst having no idea who they were by!

Liked this more than I expected, a lot of interesting influences

A classic. About as close to a 5 as you can get

Hele vette nummers, maar als geheel net niet.

4 Probably showing my age here - as a Gen Zer - but this is the first album on the list so far that I can remember releasing and having massive mainstream success within my lifetime. In particular, there are two songs here, Electric Feel and Kids, that you could not escape hearing in the late 2000s if your life depended on it - two radio hits that I actually feel completely opposite towards. Electric Feel is a song that I’ve always found kind of annoying and only grew to further dislike the more it became overplayed, meanwhile, Kids I would consider to be one of the single greatest pop songs to come from the decade. However, there was actually a third hit from the album that I had totally forgotten about - Time to Pretend. While I don’t remember ever being the biggest fan of that one either, I quite enjoyed it here - it’s an admittedly catchy tune when it’s not being played to death. This is also the first time I think I’ve ever paid attention to the lyrics, and while they’re not overly deep by any means, comparing the desire to spend your life living fast and loose to the innocence and naivety of youth was something I thought was really well done… and kinda hit home. The musical diversity of this album was also a bit of a surprise - the duo’s influence from a decades-spanning assortment of pop music is felt on any given track, and yet they still managed to make everything feel like their own. I really wasn’t expecting their take on rock towards the end, but it resulted in two of my new favorites from the album, Pieces of What and Of Moons, Birds, & Monsters. Pieces of What in particular gave me strong classic rock vibes, to the point where I swear it sounds just like another artist I can’t quite pinpoint - maybe a bit of Mick Jagger in the vocals? Didn’t expect to enjoy this one as much as I did, especially being that I wasn’t the biggest fan of two of the singles when they initially dropped. I still didn’t walk away loving Electric Feel, but come on, as a whole, this is just good pop music. The production here holds up a lot better than many other pop albums of the 2000s, to the point where I really think this album could drop today and still be a massive hit. Easily a solid 4 from me.

Very good albums some great one on there😝

Great modern pop!

Wow this was great. Only ever heard the singles. Very solid record with interesting ideas. Pop but genre pushing.

Big on the nostalgia for any millennial. Good vibes and reckless times.

I feel like I have to be in a specific mood for this album, but when I am it's a fantastic album. Regardless of my mood it's still fantastic.

Love this album

very cohesive and beautiful. the singles slap and the deep cuts were good but maybe didn’t resonate as much. great album.

Catchy melodies, production is amazing. The singles definitely carry the album. Was not a big fan of all the other songs but they were not bad. Overall it’s a really well made album with classics I will not get tired of listening to.

At its worst, this album sounds like it’s made in a garage and posted to SoundCloud after being edited on a Mac. At its best, this album is a masterpiece of modern psychedelic rock and pop. The good definitely outweighs the bad, I really enjoyed this album.

Oracular Spectacular is the debut album by the American band MGMT. Although album sales were slow, but consistent over the years, critics lauded this debut album for its production and musical style. It has been certified gold in the US and double platinum in the UK. This indie pop / psychedelic pop album has some of the catchiest pop melodies from the 2000's decade. There's consistent themes on this album about growing up and making the most out of your time - especially childhood - and this along with the quality production provides an amazing record. The first half is a little better than the second half when it comes to the tracks specifically. MGMT has a special place in my heart because it reminds me of my great years in high school and I have a few of my favorite tracks of theirs on my regular playlists. It was nice to finally listen to their debut album in one sitting and I loved every bit of it. The second half of the album could have been bolstered a little more with another solid, catchy track, but oh well it was still good. I definitely recommend everyone to give this album a listen.

Strong flaming lips influence packaged into electronic indie rock.

throwback classic of mine, one of the first albums ive listened to that was outside of my comfort zone for me and i ended up loving it a lot, always a bit of bias from me to this album

Surprising one here, never head of it. Well produced and some great tracks.

Wow I wasn't expecting this album to be on this list. I also didn't realize that all of these songs were on ONE album. That's really impressive for them and I'm surprised that it took me this long to find this out. "Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel" and "Kids" were probably 3 of the first 10 songs that I would hear at college parties and I think that this is pretty universal for other middle millennials. I am immediately brought back to standing in a damp basement staring at a tattered flag hanging on an unfinished concrete wall and embroidered with seemingly random Greek alphabet letters. I am sipping red jungle juice with each sip tasting worse than the last and praying that I can get drunk faster so that I can find these conversations more interesting because I can only feign interest in accounting and business for so long. I keep sipping and staring at my girlfriend across the room having a discussion with her roommates as I feel like I'd rather be anywhere else on earth but I'm happy that I'm making an effort to be extroverted here. I keep sipping and talking, and sipping and talking and going back and forth from the Rubbermaid full of red liquid to my in progress conversations. I then blink my eyes open and then immediately shut them. I am singing in my head "control yourself take only what you need a family of trees wanting to be haunted the water is warm but it's sending me shivers a baby is born crying out for attention" I go to open my mouth to physically sing the song and bring it to life outside of the hum inside my head and when my mouth opens I begin vomiting intensely. I open my eyes again and I can see a terribly composed Jackson Pollock of puke all over the stairwell closest to my girlfriend's dorm room. Hours must have gone by and I am alone. There's no singing. Only a whimpered "fuck". I get up from my hands and knees and go to the men's shared bathroom to rinse my mouth out. I feel weak. I open the bathroom door and there's a bro in there. I am sweating, my vision is blurred and spinning, I am still drunk, but there is no vomit on me. I rinse my mouth out and the bro starts chatting. He is also drunk and asks "Who are you?" I tell him that I'm spending the night with my girlfriend. He doesn't ask who my girlfriend is but he asks if I know the two spanish girls at the end of the hall, because "they are hot". I say yes and that one is my girlfriend. He doesn't process this and continues to talk about how hot the two girls are. "I would fuck both of them". I am so fucked up that I would probably lose a fist fight with a five year old. I loudly interrupt him and repeat "yea Gab is my girlfriend" to a blank head nod response. I think he might have processed this. He is a bro and all I can think at the time is to stand up just a little bit to him but also to lend him some advice and my thinking process in my head is something along the lines of "yea, I want to fuck my girlfriend too and yea she's hot but you can't just go around saying that and you really can't without reading the room or knowing the people in it". I go to leave the bathroom and I turn and say the tiredest "hey, shut the fuck up" I can muster, and he nods again. I go to bed. The night is over. MGMT. The album is a 4/5 for me. It will forever be tied to college experiences and I am thankful.

A very very good album, the ones I remembered have aged very well still, and the ones I don't remember are still bangers with wild hints of different bands from the past/different styles

I did not expect to like this, was pleasantly surprised. I even listened twice.

I'm familiar with MGMT's hits, but I've never listened to their albums in full. The singles off this album are stellar, so I was curious how the rest compares. On first listen I wasn't super impressed with the other tracks. But on second listen I noticed they started to grow on me.

I live indietronica

Mes amis d'enfance de MGMT m'ont régalé sur cet album, tout l'inverse de mon camarade d'écoute robcremaillère qui s'evertue à distiller des avis absolumetn effarants sur tous les albums du générateur.

Ohhh to be 16 years old, listening to this album on a summertime drive, windows down and your teenage friends being annoying. I love this and always will.

I loved it then I love it now 4.75/5

This album is an enigma. The 3 hit songs seem like they are written by a completely different band than the rest of the album. They are so ding-dang catchy. The rest of the album imitates the Syd Barett Pink Floyd albums: bizzare psychedelia. I really loved this album (and more so their follow up album) when I first discovered cannabis in high school, but it doesn’t seem as powerful as a jaded adult surrounded by a bunch of sweaty tourists on a crowded L train that is stuck at the same stop for 30 minutes and I just want to get home and eat pasta and play with my cat. 3.5/5

pretty good

Apparently this album was played a lot at college parties. Since I missed that whole scene, I am able to enjoy this album. This is, however, one of the most front-loaded albums I've ever heard. As a bonus, I love how they got Joanna Newsom to play the mom in the video of "Kids". That song is such an earworm that everything after it on the album, though good, suffers by comparison.

Really good

This record was literally gathering dust in our vinyl collection before I got this on 1001. But it's so innocently fresh, it was a real pleasure. Like a trailer of further summer.

Im a rock guy, but i feel close to this record, there is something here

Jahas soittelua jah nii-i... On pojjaat tehny.. aikamoinen ensimmäinen biisi soundeffect awe-inspiring kunnioitusta herättävä.. hurja.... Muu musiikki ei hurjaa ole kuitenkaan.. voi voi vaan kun on vaan niin hyvä albumi että pakko lätkästä nelosta..heh

Of course I love this album. Grew up on it, one of the first bands I liked on my own. Pieces of Want is a banger, Electric Feel is groovy, Kids of course. Didn't feel anything here justified the 5 but I love the songs on this album and am happy it came up

Another band I overlooked. I need to hear more from them.

I’m trying to be more definite about scoring these albums otherwise every one I listen to ends up being 3*. I enjoyed this one so I’m giving 4* I will probably slip back into average scoring again.

Tough one this. It felt good listening on a Friday afternoon, less so on a rainy Monday morning. Torn between 3 and 4...

Massively hooky, though getting dangerously close to bubble gum territory in the middle of record. Opener “Time to Pretend” rocks and hasn't dimmed a nidge in a decade and a half since its release; it's an anthemic banger of the feel-good song-of-the-summer variety. Last three songs – with the Jaggeresque vocals and likable down-trending vibes – make this more than a forgettable aughtie record, though who knows what to make of lyrics allegedly from Mayan prophecies (one certainly doesn’t). Fun to hear again. Glad to hear it's aging well. Seems a poor choice to have been cut.

There was a time when this album came out that MGMT were taking the world by storm, rich and famous beyond their wildest desires. I conversely was working in a shop with a radio station that played seemingly the same 3 songs on repeat. Around this time those 3 songs were 'Kids', 'Electric Feel' and 'Time to Pretend' so I think I can be forgiven for rather going off them. For years I didn't think about the band that had so annoyed me during that summer in 2007 until a totally chance re-listen probably 8 or 9 years later. Immediately I was on the phone to a friend "Did you know that 'Oracular Spectacular' is really good!" I'd realized that there was far more depth to the non singles that I could have realized. Even the big singles clicked and I twigged that the reason 'Kids' took over everything was that it was meticulously well put together. The synth sounds in this song are just to die for. Melodic, deep, just the right amount of LFO and with a lush but radio friendly distortion which makes the hairs stick up on my arms. The vocals have a really interesting melody and some incredible harmonies to them and again have just a hint of distortion and reverb in just the right places to make it really pop. Same goes for Electric feel. But then you get to '4th Dimensional Transition' and it turns into almost a completely different album, much more understated and experimental, almost late 60's psychedelia, but crucially its not jarring or out of place. I adore this album now days, it hasn't quite elevated to a 5 but its knocking on the door with like a 4.8.

I previously had only heard Time to Pretend, Kids, and Electric Feel so I was surprised by how eclectic the songwriting on this album is.

I listened to this album about 1 or 2 years ago and remember it being aight. There are 3 distinct tracks that are really good and are designated as "classics" so they probably carry the album. This is actually a lot more enjoyable than I had expected. I had heard a lot of people say that the rest of the album wasn't good compared to the singles on it; while that is true the other songs are pretty good and have a different feel to the singles. There are songs that seem to take inspiration from 70's rock and others that are more experimental sounding (especially for the time) Overall it is better than I expected.

some great classics, some good stuff, and some pretty annoying stuff. this album is the closest so far to the sound that i like.

pretty sick and nostalgic

The singles on this album are classics which will be remembered as staples of indie rock, at the turn of the century.

I really loved this one, though I'd never heard it before. The second half does flag a bit, but it's still good.

Still a good record.

I remember when MGMT hit the scene (and you couldn't escape Kids in public) but I was in a much different listening place at the time. I was deep into the heavy stuff and eschewed anything too danceable or commercial that was coming at me from the world-at-large. Ironically, it is music I might've enjoyed if I had heard it coming from a friend, an artist or a band that I had already accepted into my inner circle of approved inputs. In other words, there's a tremendous resonance with stuff I had already allowed through: Wolf Parade, Animal Collective, etc. This closing off or setting up arbitrary musical boundaries is a recurring theme or phase I find myself going through. I felt it most acutely in Jr. High and High School. I had a brief period of open ears for part of College and afterwards. But there was some steady tightening up of the reins in the late-to-mid aughts that lasted maybe a decade or more. So, what does this have to do with MGMT's Oracular Spectacular? It's very good for music of that era but I wasn't willing to hear that then. So now I'm coming to it late and a little stupidly. Don't be like past me. Be like present me — actively fight against the desire to close up into whatever genre I'm deep into at the moment. Resist the myopia of whatever scene you're in. I'm glad I could open my ears to Oracular Spectacular today.

Starts off with a bang and a massively appealing look, with likable attitude to boot. Fresh and energetic and just massively youthful, but the hooks are undeniably appealing, but with some classic-y druggy overtones, that one finds comfortably familiar. Ends strong, too, though in a quieter mood which promised more excellence to come, which never did, quite.

I've always liked this album.

MGMT are too familiar, but I had never listened closely to all the words of Oracular Spectacular. The discovery on that front is a motherlode of silliness, if anything reducing the single cuts. More importantly, though, is sonic breadth and the fusion of liquid electronics with all.

Nostalgia-clouded review alert! I was just a kid when this came out. Everyone knows the 3 singles from this record. And for good reason, they’re absolutely monster songs. This felt so fresh when it came out and still holds up till this day imo.

Good music, initial album from one of my more favorite bands. I like their newer stuff, but it wouldn't exist without this groundbreaking album

terepin trip 2000s

Mis favoritos: -Time to pretend -Kids -4th Dimensional Transition

Oh, I remember when this project took over the "indie" airwaves. The hits seem to be a little too easy on the ear for truly "indie" stuff, to be honest, but I guess that duo knew how to write great pop songs, there's no doubt about that. And the rest of the neo-psychedelic tunes on this record are pretty good too, so I guess I can't give MGMT anything less than four stars for such a successful debut album, either commercially or artistically speaking. Checking on the Wikipedia notes for this record, I learned that the first versions of "Time To Pretend" and "Kids" were actually released in their first EP in 2005. Listening to the latter on Spotify, it's quite interesting to see how MGMT then polished their sound to make it more palatable and "radio-friendly". That EP sounded almost lo-fi in its production, which tells you a lot of the long process those two youngster went through to finally achieve success. Not that lo-fi is necessarily a bad thing. "Kids"' original bridge before the final chorus (or middle-four, I never know how to call those things) is also very different, far more adventurous harmonically and melodically speaking than the simple four-on-the-floor, linear section displayed in the more famous second version. I think i prefer the original recording now... Oh, by the way, I also need to point out that MGMT's second LP, *Congratulations*, actually sounds even more memorable to my ears than their debut album. Check it out if you like convoluted sorts of earworms, as I do sometimes. It's more sophisticated than *Oracular Spectacular*, but it's also more playful, lively and impulsive somehow. I could actually give 5 stars to this other record without any hesitation. Everything MGMT did after those first two LPs sounded far less striking or valuable to me. But I guess *two* contenders for being part of limited list of essential albums of all time is not so bad for two kids mostly seen as one-string-of-hits-wonders when they started to get famous. I mean, there are not many musicians who can boast of reaching that very high level, are they? Number of albums left to review: 661 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 169 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 80 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 95

while i do like the singles the most (basic take i know), i like the more psychedelic stuff a lot as well. that being said, "electric feel", "kids", and "time to pretend" are perfect songs that are hard to beat in my book. the closest they come to beating that though has to go to "4th dimensional transition" with its fast drums and sci-fi synths. i'm definitely not disappointed though and i feel like the songs i'm not that big a fan of will grow on me a lot.

A fun modern album. 4/5. Favorite Track: Electric Feels

I love the background track; it sounds so cool and different. I really enjoyed it and can listen to it without focusing on it!

Time to Pretend- 8.5 Weekend Wars- 7 The Youth- 8 Electric Feel- 9 Kids- 8.6 4th Dimension- 6 Pieces of What- 7 Of Moons, Birds and Monsters- 6 The Handshake- 7.8 Future Reflections- 7.3

My thoughts on this album are tinged with high school nostalgia, but the singles here are top-tier hits. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing those songs, and for good reason. It was a refreshing contrast versus pop punk and alternative rock (which is still where my preference lies, but that's another story), and was one of the first to kick off the late '00s-early '10s indie takeover. It's reminiscent of simpler times with less worries, when we were young and the future was bright and unknown. Great example of music as an art form, in how it can evoke emotions and memories far beyond what a one to five star scale rating can properly communicate. However - this is the first time I'm listening to the full album and while the hits are easy five-star songs, the rest of it is highly overshadowed and somewhat tainted by the singles. I'm sure the record as a whole was probably fantastic in 2007, but as a newcomer listening in 2023, the deep cuts just sound like supporting acts to Kids, Time to Pretend, and Electric Feel. Thankfully, those three are so good that it's hard to give this anything below a mid to low-4.

Riddled with nostalgia, Kids + Electric Feel + Time to Pretend certified bangers

Never properly listened to MGMT before so glad I got the chyaaance. There’s obviously the red hot bangers sprinkled in there, which are still great. Of Moons, Birds & Monsters was an unexpected epic.

heard these tunes before but didn't know who it was. pretty creative pop songs. 4

3.8 but close to 4 so there ya go

Not sure why there is so much negativity around this album - Yes, it lifts from the Beatles, Bowie and 70's synth/pop/disco - Obviously Time To Pretend, Kids and Electric Feel were huge hits and even now sound just as good as they did. But the rest of the album, though not hitting those heights, is still solid enough

Great album!

Oh I already know I’m going to love this album. Time to Pretend is a classic high school song for me. Great road trip music, which is appropriate because Jacob and I are currently driving across Ohio. Kids is a masterpiece. The synth is simple, but so effective. Effectively making me dance, that is. The synth of 4th Dimensional Transition is also so strange and amazing. Overall this album stands the test of time. It is a journey and I’m along for the ride. 4/5.

Love this album through and through.

You'd think these guys spent a lot of time in dance clubs with the abundance of synth hooks in their big hits like “Time to Pretend” and “Kids”. But it’s nice to see they don’t let this sound define them. The more organic numbers are refreshing. I like the slow starts where Andrew VanWyngarden's voice is showcased - I especially like "The Youth". He sounds like Mick Jagger (or maybe Jake Bugg) in “Pieces of What”. The first song I became familiar with was “Electric Feel” which I had on high rotation back in the day. MGMT managed to carve out their own niche in the cluttered indie-psychedelic-electronic pop territory. The best description of their sound came from NME, who said they produce pop music that sounds as if it were filtered through a kaleidoscope. The first half of the CD is easily a 5 for me but I agree with the critics who weren’t as fond of the latter half.

idk pretty neat

Das war erst 2007? Hatte das nun eher in den 90er verortet. Super Platte. Anleihen von Genesis, aber frischer bewegender umgesetzt, nicht so vergeistigt. Top Platte stimmt alles. Macht Spaß zu hören.

I’ve really enjoyed this album since it came out. Of course Electric Feel and Kids, but there’s a fairly diverse sound here.

The singles off this album are great. Would work on any mix from this era. The rest of the record is fine. Score is mostly based on the singles.

Was surprised by how much I enjoyed this album. Didn't know much about them, of course I've heard one or two of these songs before. But I liked it quite a bit.

I don't know why but I like it

I burned a copy of this album when it came out because I enjoyed their sound and the songs were interesting and different. Listening now, I can't help but hear so many other bands and influences (Bowie, Arcade Fire?) to their overall sound and a weird sense of deja vu. I still enjoyed it, it held my attention and recalled some of the reasons I like this band. Enjoyable, well worth your time.

unexpected

OOOOH GIRL SHOCK ME LIKE AN ELECTRIC EEL

great mix of psychedelic synths and indie sleaze. kids will live in my head rent free.

I forgot this album had so many bops.

At first, before listening, it would be just like how some people described it: stereotypical electronic music. Now I don't know about that now, but still. But, I WAS EXTREMELY WRONG. First off, the synths are amazing, giving the sound of the album, and each and every song a hypnotic feel. It's a beam of intentionally making something sounds generic, into something emotional to some people. It's synths, the usage of the synths. It's a really solid album. Very soothing. Strong debut, and deserves to be in the list. TL;DR Synths, synths, synths.

This record was all the music nerds talked about in 07 or 08. I remember being annoyed by the hype. But I like the record none the less. This was a fun listen. I hadn't thought about it in years.

Man, oh man. Truly a classic album, which is funny to say about something from 2007. But a classic in the indie/alternative type scene, undoubtedly. It's danceable and poppy, but sounds as if made with instruments discovered on some other planet. I've heard other albums from MGMT and nothing really touches this one for me. Of special importance here is the fact that the first five songs in a row, the whole side A, are all bangers to me, I love every track. Weekend Wars less so than the others, but still really cool. Aside from that, you've got "Kids" and "Time to Pretend," holy grails of indie. Then "Electric Feel," which is immortal on its own but was further immortalized by Frank Ocean on Nostalgia, Ultra. And "The Youth" is another heater, I'm pretty sure I first heard it in that movie Kings of Summer and fell in love immediately. This one's dangerously close to a 5 star from me, but most of the songs on the back half don't hit for me. Regardless, very essential inclusion on this list, and of course I have it on vinyl. Favorite tracks: Electric Feel, Kids, Time to Pretend, The Youth, Weekend Wars, Of Moons Birds & Monsters. Album art: Classic, gotta be iconic by now. Two boys from the past, or the future? Impossible to know. But the soft purple and blue hues of dusk really sell this one too. Just awesome. 4.5/5

Genuinely surprised it was a good album

This is tight dance pop psych record. You can’t tell me otherwise. It was tomgue in cheek and fun. The band goes on to be weirdos who dont care what their record label wants. It made indie explode in a lot of ways back in 06 or 07. Yeah, they made a lot of momey on corporate tie ins and shit, but the record fits. It feels good and right. It was goofy and sarcastic. Listen to it loseeerrssss.

loved the majority of it

I've heard most of these songs before, but all together I really liked the album. 4/5

dette hadde jeg glemt fantes, hørte så mye på det på vgs nostalgi

A great album that was very of its time in the ironic way they intended. "Time to Pretend", "Electric Feel", and "Kids" have become cultural icons in music. The Youtube channel Middle 8 did a wonderful video essay on the band that I recommend to anybody that enjoys this album. "Weekend Wars" was a highlight track that I never noticed in my first few listens of this album, great bass and interesting melodies on that song.

great synths, cool lyrics, same feeling throughout the album, remembered my 2016

Indie kid vibes

I had heard more songs from this album than I realized (without even really knowing they were all by the same band) - so that was a nice surprise. But then, I also really dug all the songs that I hadn't heard before. This is a solid, fun album.

I really liked this album and was splendidly surprised by the creativity and genre? It reminded me a bit of Tears for Fears. I like the production and every song really caught my attention. It felt like they were taking parts of the 70s 80s and 90s and melding them all together, without sounding like they were copying anything specifically from any other artist. I would listen to it again when I have time to actually sit down with some headphones or earbuds and view the lyrics along with the music

Pop-rock progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Time to Pretend and Kids were two songs I was very familiar with, electronic pop Is not really my thing but I felt like overall the album would be great for a fan of the genre.

Surprisingly fun. Had no idea of their background or music.

hørte masse på detta i sommer

Not the best MGMT album put pretty cool Prefs: Time To Pretend, Weekend Wars, The Youth, Kids, 4th Dimensional Transition, Pieces of What, Future Reflections Moins pref: The Handshake

Pretty cool album, not sure I'd listened to it the whole way before. I think congratsulations is a better album, but I can see how this one was also ground breaking. 4 stars

not super into indie but some good stuff in there

great album - solid songs and sound continuity

Kids er líklega besta lag áratugarins!

Fun album. The singles are all absolute bangers. The rest borders on fill status. Still a worthy listen. 4/5

couldn't stand these guys when i saw them live, but dang there are 3 of the greatest songs of the last 25 years on this album

I recognised way more of this than I was expecting to!

A big vibe. The three singles are great in particular but it's just generally very good

I already had Electric Feel as one of my liked songs on spotify, so that was really good start. I ended up liking the song "Kids" and thought "Time to Pretend" was pretty good as well. Didn't love the rest but it was listenable

Really cool album. Goes from dance-y, to chill, to punk very nicely and sometimes wishing the same song. Kids, Electric Feel, Time to Pretend, and 4th Dimensional Transition were standouts to me.

Lovely. Never paid much attention to MGMT at the time this came out as they were far to mainstream for me to imagine that listening to them would make me seem cool and different. A real shame because this is very endearing, psych-synth-pop. Like early 2010s Animal Collective with all the excesses trimmed, whipped into shape in a nice clean package. Fav Tracks: Time To Pretend, The Youth, Electric Feel - 4/5

I was really only familiar with MGMT’s radio hits which I liked, but the album itself is a cool vibe.

Already know and love this album, highlights are Time to Pretend, The Handshake and Future Reflections. Whilst I don't think this is the best MGMT album, I still holds a place in my heart for nostalgia alone.

not my style but good

Beside the ones that got airplay - which are all good - I like 4th Dimensional Transition, which channels old, psychedelic Pink Floyd. The Handshake, Future Reflections also keepers.

Psychy-synthy-poppy goodness. This might get up to a 5 on repeated listens; it's teetering on the edge of that last star for sure, but a few of the songs might need to grow on me a bit more.

Ja ovaj album znam stvarno dosta dugo, ali mislim da nikad nisam slušao cijeli. Now, it's time!

Oldie but goodie :) wasn’t able to finish but electric feel gives me that electric feel!

Pretty cool actually, listen again

Pop-rock progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

This album was the soundtrack to one of the most pivotal years of my life. As I remembered it, the first five songs are bangers, and the rest are kind of filler. Listening again, the entire thing is wall-to-wall brilliant. A somehow underrated (lost in the popularity of the one mega-hit) masterpiece.

Very unique sound, good for unfocused listening, and at the same time, wish I was focused on the lyrics

Very good

I like this album quite a bit. It has a sound that I have appreciated in pop music of its decade but have not explored extensively. "Kids" has been a favorite, played frequently on my Pandora station, and "Time to Pretend" is a great synth anthem. I also really like the neo-disco "Electric Feel." I'm happy to spend more time with them!

I listened to this album quite a few times today. Not that I really loved it, but there was something appealing. I appreciated the youthfulness, I suppose. On some level it also felt a bit too hipster (maybe that isn't really to word that I am looking for)...just something that had me keep a bit at arm's length.

Okay. This is more my jam. I already know some of these songs because this is during college. I'm going to rank this high, but I doubt that I'll call this a high favorite. I'll need to listen to more MGMT.

Kinda groovy. Popy as hell though

Pretty nice overall. Fuzztoned/emo/pop feel. Reminds me of Daft Punk Random Access Memories a little bit. Also Eels, Cage the Elephant, that sort of thing.

highlights - time to pretend - the youth (that's addictive) - electric feel - kids - the handshake least favs: - 4th Dimensional Transition - pieces of what liked: yea

So many hits on this album. Really fun.

Really interesting and some brilliant songs.

I don't know why I keep thinking of this as a "new" album, it's been out for 15 years! Also thought, for some reason, they were British. Maybe I'm thinking of Metronomy, or Alt-J who came out around the same time. One of the big sounds of the end of the 00's, like an updated talking heads. Great album, but overall not quite as good as Alt-J or Metronomy.

Toda una sorpresa de grupo y de disco, con canciones muy alegres, algún tema muy reconocido y con gran vitalidad y armonía. Estilo alegre y desenfadado, mezcla de pop y algo de techno

The hits are absolutely incredible, with some decent extras, but a lot of misses as filler. The highs are very high, but the lows are as equally low.

Poppy squishy emo goodness. A unique and cool sound. Loved Time to Pretend when it first came out, and it still sounds gorgeous.

This is an album that happened around me in my lifetime that I largely ignored. It’s pretty good ya dummy

Oh look it's the sound of my time in college. Didn't realize how many of these songs that were perpetually on in the background were 1) by MGMT and 2) on this album. I like it!

better and more here than I remember when it came out. The album that popularized this type of indie rock for late 00's and early 10's

Great album, their hits do get a little annoying as they still get played a lot. I'm more of a fan of their later works (Little Dark Age) though.

Thought it would drag in the second half, but that's where the interesting stuff is.

A lot better than I'd expected. A pleasant surprise.

this album has such a cool sound! a good vibe. their singles are catchy, but the whole album is such steady quality. not to mention, i just love their electronic psychedelic pop sound! i enjoyed this one more than i thought, and i'm intrigued with the rest of MGMT's catalogue as well.

The 2000s were a great time for indie rock/pop type music, and MGMT was leading the way during this time with a fairly unique sound in a psychedelic indie pop mashup. Not only did they pave their sound in a sea of indie pop bands, many of which sounded the same, but they hit the nail on the head on their first try with this debut album. Electric Feel, Time to Pretend, and Kids felt revolutionary at the time, and honestly, that still holds true today. The lyrics are catchy, the rhythms are catchy, the distorted composition are catchy. And though there have been attempts, there is nothing else quite like these tracks. The chorus from Kids, while so simple, has also always stuck with me: "control yourself / take only what you need from it / a family of trees wanting / to be haunted". It's a message about the planet literally giving itself over to be used by its human inhabitants, and that as a result, we have an obligation to treat it better, and teach our future generations to do the same. That all said, if you're looking for more on this album like the above mentioned well-known trio of outstanding songs, the remainder of the album could possibly be a letdown. No other tracks on the album hit quite like these. Still, this album has an experimental composition at its heart, and there are unique and interesting treats for the ears all throughout. I continue to find this album a fun experience, all these years later.

I quite enjoyed this modern rock album

Great modern indie pop. Tunes galore with bubbling synths and more hooks than a bait shop. Best Tracks: Time To Pretend; Electric Feel; Kids

At the time I thought this was more of a singles band: the singles are all 5-star and instantly recognizable. In fact, the whole first half of the album is 5-star and then it drops a bit: a score of 8/10 seems about right to me.

Skemmtileg plata!

A great album I have heard many times before

I don't like a lot of synth music but this is a solid album.

i know this album well. i like it. kind of got played a bit to much during my party days tho.

Effective mix of synths, indie and danceability + bangerz

Eerste helft is iets vrolijker en gevarieerder. De 2e helft wat meer dromerig. Goed album, maar mist wat 'geheel'

Favorite Track - Time to Pretend Where I was - Everywhere How I listened - Amazon music on speakers Listen Again? - YES!

i was familiar with kids and electric feel but i’d never heard any other songs and i really enjoyed them. i thought they had a new sort of sound to them that were kind of unique but not too much in a way that was reaching. my only thing is that some of the songs got to be unnecessarily lengthy and repetitive, but other than that i really enjoyed.

-Cool keyboards going in the left ear in "Weekend Wars" -Cool vibes in "4th Dimensional Transition" and "Moons, Birds & Monsters" -Love the end of "The Handshake" -some very respectable musical thingies happening here

This is, to put it simply, peak background music. There's a reason most people will know at least two tracks from this album. It enchances basically everything you do, it's not intrusive, it's interesting enough to warrant moments of attention but not aggresively enough as to be distracting. The instrumentation is varied, the tracks are distinct yet flow together well, really if only it had any song that's stand-out catchy or deep enough to really bite into and think about it'd be perfect. Alas, it does not have them, so it remains a pinacle of 4/5. Greatly pleasurable listening experience.

Time to Pretened i The Youth gigakoks, reszta również przyjemna do słuchania.

A real gem. Upset it took me this long to listen to it.

The bloom is off the rose with this knowing that nothing after really stands up but the highs are SO high here

I remembered more of these songs that I thought I would. I had been thinking of them as one hit wonders with Electric Feel but that is really not the case. They really have a great sound.

On the first side of this they are pretty much on fire. Loses some steam on side 2 but still very enjoyable. Psychedelic pop gets a modern makeover. Genuine fun.

This was the hotness when I was in college. Definitely fun to listen back to it now knowing a bit more about synthesizers and sound-creation. MGMT had that great mix of vocal-pop hooks and delicious synthy vibes. I think there are a ton of bands that wouldn't exist if MGMT didn't have the success they did. I've enjoyed listening to some of the lesser known songs on here, I've heard them but it's been a while. Weekend Wars sort of has a proto-punk vocal delivery, also sort of Freddie Mercury vibe. Thematically at the time it felt like it captured the millennial energy of both being worn down but still happy enough to wanna party. Only problem is songs like Electric Feel and Kids have been so overplayed that they don't mean much to me anymore.

Great, first half is amazing

Pretty dope album. Outside of the really nostalgic classics on this thing, the other tracks are equally as creative and interesting. I’ll def be coming back to it 8/10

What a fun album.

I really dig it

Got those earworms.

very pleasant album, I already knew some of the songs, great melodies and vibe

The singing is hit and miss, but I do like the music throughout. Several of the songs are instantly recognizable because of their distinctive tone and catchy licks.

I think I heard this once or twice when it came out but didn't have much memory of it. As soon as the first track kicked off it all came back, though - very distinctive poppy sound! I can dig it. Fave track - "Time to Pretend" and "Kids" - both pretty iconic!

Enjoyed

“Time to Pretend” still has just the right amount of melancholy feeling.

This takes me back a bit. I had a phase of being very into this brand of indie-pop during the early to mid 2010s. I don't care much for the style anymore, but this is still a pretty good album. The difference between the best and the worst tracks is a bit too big. But the worst tracks are also still very listenable.

I feel like the only 22 year old who hasn't heard any of these songs before... maybe "Electric Feel" sounds a bit familiar, but here's a fresh opinion for you. I'm actually impressed by this modern pop album. The entire first half is really impressive. You have a ton of really creative synths attributed to modern production to create two entirely different moods: disco-like dance hits and mellower psychedelic trips. The track "Of Moons Birds & Monsters" is the perfect blend of both styles. Being a baroque pop fan, I'm actually partial to the less popular tracks like the chamber repetition of "The Youth" or the dark retrowave of "The Handshake." Ironically, a candidate for my least favorite track is the most popular, "Kids," which is mostly boring repetitive techno and annoying raised vocals. The synth rock solos tend to be my favorite parts of these songs. They're all very different from each other, evoking a variety of emotions. "4th Dimensional Transition" does this a lot throughout the song. It's also the little things like the trippy orchestral instruments coming in and out all at once at varying speeds, or their voices suddenly changing volume, that give these songs character, making it impossible for me to dislike almost any of them.

7.5/10

Love it but I’m biased because I know it well a three great songs in here and a set of other good ones and flows well

The rest of the album didn’t quite live up to the singles, but overall an enjoyable pop album nonetheless. 7/10

7/10. A lot of stuff I've heard on the radio growing up, but not really my style after the nostalgia wears off.

The singles are three of the best pop songs from the 2000s. The rest is pretty alright. 8/10

Great debut album for psychedelic pop band.

Critical listening for my late high school years. Still a great album to boot.

A classic indie album. Psychedelic pop? Indie rock? Who cares, just enjoy it. Favorite Track: Time to Pretend Relisten: Yes

Easy enjoyable indie pop/rock with synth elements

Somehow this passed me by, tho I knew a couple of the hits. Enjoyable

Liked it a lot! Already knew 4 songs from high school times but the rest was brand new. Kids is a classic for my generation. Enjoyed the rock/electronica sound and the thom-yorke-esque singing. Good stuff

LOVE this album!! Spacey tunes, beginning of the album is banger after banger and the less popular second half of the album is still really enjoyable in a different way. Brings back great memories of seeing them live and really enjoying myself. Listening makes me so happy and puts me in a great mood!

A classic. I was surprised that there were songs on there I didn't know, I guess I have never listened to the whole thing, enjoyed those ones but the old bangers are by far the best

It holds up! And what ever happened to MGMT. Some absolute bangers in here, but why didn't we hear of them after this? Did their other albums suck? Giving this a 4 star cos I wasn't super in love with every song and you've got to save the 5 stars for the really special stuff

I might have heard Youth somewhere at some point before. The start of Eletric Feel has some oriental air there. Sort of in favour of Pieces of What.

Time to Pretend is an earnest repudiation of fame and fortune from someone who feels trapped inescapably. I am really digging this blown out eletro pop sound. Of Moons Birds and Monsters provides a lot of needed breathing on the album as a whole, though the back half, with the exception of Kids, is kess impressive than the first half.

Solid album. The Handshake is going to stay with me for a long time. However, beyond that and the singles, not much else from the album resonates with me.

When your 3 biggest songs come off of your first LP, you're gonna have a bad time (living up to that hype). Seriously, this album helped shape some of my more formative years and continues to have songs in my regular rotation.

Well it's Orac Spectac, an album that influenced a generation of indie artists. Been a while since I listened to it, but front to back it's a genuinely great album with great track variety. Pieces of What is def my favorite, I'm upset I skipped over it for all these years. The Handshake also slaps.

A cracker and not one i know that well

Do-do do-do doo do-do doo doo

Yeah, I really like MGMT. This album is pretty epic and spawned plenty of imitators. But nobody quite managed the big sound / ironic sneer / catchy and moody psych pop sound like these guys.

Some high hits and some misses.

I wouldn't call it psychadelic, but it is good

I can't believe this is from 14 years ago. That seems weird. But I was really into this when it came out and I still like it a lot.

First 5 tracks are great, slips away after that. Slightly coloured by the fact that I loved this album when I was 19, but just a great sound.

Surprisingly better than my first impression led me to believe. One of those albums I could see myself listening to on a rainy day, walking around in a sort of trance

Whoo hoooooo good memories of this album

First half of the album is spectacular

Decent, some really good songs

This was great, some strong melodies and lyrics. Unexpected to be honest. Goes to show when you like one song (Electric Feel in my case) you should go on to give the album at least one listen.

enjoyed it

Some good tracks, some medium tracks. Overall quite nice

I like this group and enjoyed this album!

OH MY GOD THAT FIRST SONG. I RECOGNIZE THAT MELODY! Another song title to put to a melody I've heard from my childhood. neat. (Time to Pretend) The melody from [Kids] too apparently. Reawakened latent memories in me.

Very nice, some classic (if overplayed) tunes, but a solid album overall. 3.5

Three singles that made up college

Ya lo había escuchado antes. Es un muy buen disco, principalmente la primera mitad, la segunda mitad no es mala, pero tiene menos fuerza que las primeras 5 canciones. Aún así es de los mejores discos que he escuchado.

It has "Kids" and "Time to Pretend". Not much more to be said really, a luscious slice of indie electro pop

Enjoyed the album. Different and unexpected.

a few great songs, lacking overall

4.5/5 very good album with no bad songs
