A great album which still holds up. Some classic tracks which always take me back
Nostalgic. Top songs: kids, time to pretend, electric feel
Great album, never listened all the way through
So many great tunes. Time to Pretend will forever be a pump up jam
trippy pop that had its perfect moment in time, and some of the songs still really hold up. Knocking one star off as they were surprisingly flat live
4/5 not too shabby! I could buy it...

I rated all the songs individually (out of five) and got 3.8 so let's round that up to 4. Issues are that I think the singer doesn't have a good enough voice to make the long drawn out parts enjoyable enough. But some songs on this album slap hard.
some classics + some non-classics to bridge together the classics
Pretty good stuff. I'd like to listen to this again. 3RS
Loved some of these
A classic when it came out!
Loved it!
Loved the singles, other songs were just medium good to good for me
Good alternative pop album that has roots that go back to childhood for me. Bittersweet but also somber memories; it's perception is highly affected by the past. Listening to the entirety of the album with an adult perspective was enjoyable, though.
Got that Justice feel to it, with less edm and more pop. fucks wit it. I like The Youth. Electric Feel is ofc a bop. Like the leads in Kids, a good ass head bop. Overall good, might need to listen a few more times.
Another contemporary classic. it kinda drags towards the end but its very good.
Kids is such an iconic song. Very nostalgic.

Waaaay better than I thought it would be, perfect rainy day emo album
Really good throughout
Handful of excellent tracks; fun, experimental, electronic and catchy. This was the album that got me into MGMT, and remains their best release.
i loved this album when it came out, although i didnt necessarily listen to it, seeing the cover brought back memories.
Quite a few songs on this that I know that I didn’t know were them. Good stuff
This album always surprises me in how eclectic, fun, and jammy it is.
solid fun
Noice
This album is _spectacular_. Almost the anthem of my youth, almost.
if you’re not listening to this on a high volume with headphones - it’s not going to sound that great, I didn’t like this album as much as I anticipated but I can’t deny how good some of these songs make you (electric) feel
Has a couple of the best indie songs ever released. Moments of pure musical trailblazing. The rest of it is a bit mush tho.
The good tracks are so good and well-produced! But the few annoying songs and all the abrasive leads knock a start off for me.
Great indie debur album. Some amazing hits and some more niche bangers. Great stuff.
The 'big' songs from this album are a little more pop-like, but there are a lot of interesting trippy songs too.
- this feels unfair -"pieces of what" sounds like mick jagger -realizing I do not know what songs 6-10 sound like on this album - i'm grabbing onto the second half less, its like congratulations
A little bit quiet-rambly in first, but really picked up in the second half. I was a bit worried that I wasn't going to enjoy it as much as expected, but I think a couple more listens will help me to really pick it apart.
Probably made for mushrooms, but still good
Really enjoyed it and will listen again.
Few tracks were impressive but the entire album was not so memorable.
Good album, but I lost a bit of interest towards the end.
4! Never listened to this album straight in one sitting before. Really dig the sound. Very unique and upbeat
vibes & kenn ich irgendwoher
This is always a fun listen, great album 7,9/10
Kova!
Some creative, distinctive melodies in here.
I liked this a lot more than I expected. First half is stronger than the second. Other than "Pieces of What", this album has solid offerings.
Good debut
ooh i actually enjoyed this one! very good vibes thank you
Lots of catchy pop tunes on this one. I'd give this one another listen anytime; really enjoyed it.
Pretty cool.
This album has like three great/amazing songs and the rest is boring asf
Another album that just passes me by
This used to be my favorite album when I was 14, then I grew up and realized it wasn't as clever as I thought. Congratulations, Little Dark Age and Loss of Life are better.
Overall Rating - 2.80/5 (5.60/10). Kinda weird, but fun. Never particularly liked late 00s pop, but this is, at least easy to listen to.
neo-psychedelic, indie pop, synth-pop
Who?. Strangely knew a few of the songs. Pleasant enough in the background.
No thanks.
Taking Yoshimi to the disco…
(4/7) I didn't know these guys were as famous as they seem to be
A few songs I really love. Overall, a bit uneven.
I did like the songs that I already knew like: Electric feel, Kids and Time to pretend. The rest of the songs on the album I didn't really noticed
Surprisingly a few tracks I knew. But besides Time To Pretend and Kids the other tracks are not as consistent. Some great tracks, Future Reflections and 4th Dimensional Transition, but also some weak tracks, The Handshake for example. 3/5
decent album. his voice is a little annoying to me. favourite song: kids (obviously)
the youth and electric feel was awesome
started off strong but faded into unnoteworthiness
I enjoyed it, but it's very of its time
Interesante.
Songs i've already heard: - Time to pretend (4) Honestly the perfect nostalgic song. I still remember this youtube animation edit I watched a while ago that used this song. - Electric feel (2) No me gusta. Just an annoying song. - Kids (3.5) An interesting song but kind of overly optimistic sounding? Very catchy, kind of a 50/50 on whether or not id skip it. I like the last verse. It would definitely go so hard live. New songs: weekend wars (2) mid the youth (2.75) Better but I don't love it sonically or lyrically. It's a little eerie and feels a bit out of place? Kind of gives David Bowie and maybe a little Beatles? 4th dimensional transition (3.5) Space cowboy is the vibe i'd assign to this song. Western while also being futuristic. I like the lyrics. Pieces of what (3) The most beatles so far and also feels a little western. I liked it best when it picked up with the percussion. Also refreshingly short compared to other songs. Of Moons, Birds, & Monsters (2.25) didn't like this one very much at all. I tend to like their instruments a lot more than the vocals and this was one of those cases. The instrumental after the verses was pretty nice and kind of psychedelic feeling, but I really disliked the vocals so its dragging down the rating. The handshake (2) Just all around not my style or genre of music. Don't have much to say besides that. Future reflections (2) nothing to say about this one
Has some really popular songs but not all are bangers. 3.5/5
It's fine pop. Whatever
Celkom v pohode
It’s fine.
Voisin kuunnella joskus uudestaankin. Kids-biisin olin kuullut aiemminkin.
Nice music.
Millennial music final boss. The indie yelp didn't age well for this thing. Some undeniable hits and fantastic production, but the project as a whole is super dated. Time to Pretend and Kids are fantastic tho (mainly Kids)
Apparently, this album is very well known and listened by billions... I'm a particularly new to Indietronica, so I can't say much, but basing my listening experience from Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin, this record feels different. It leans more to lighter yet somber vibe of beats and lyrical structure. It's an okay cup of tea. It kind of makes me sleepy... What's with the beats that makes it like that?
2.7/5 3 really great songs and then the rest were pretty average.
It was enjoyable. Something different.
🙂
I liked this more than I thought I would, although please don't take this as a ringing endorsement.
It’s pretty good, nevertheless not close to my taste or it doesn’t “hit” me instantly. It’s good though
First half bangers
Would I listen again: yes Kids & time to pretend are great but I already knew that. The songs I didn’t know were cool but not dying to listen to them again
Techno sound. Surprised by how different the songs sounded. I thought a lot of them were going to have a much more similar sound. Recognized a couple of the songs on here. I think I would like a few of those songs more if they hadn’t been played to death on social media. Pleasantly surprised here.
Nt trrbl
Solid hits. Perfect album for a sunny afternoon in the park. Didn’t enjoy the deep cuts as much.
Solid debut from a young and talented group. Goldwasser and Van Wyngarden demonstrate clear knowledge of past musical genres such as psychedelia and electronica while being creative enough to add their style and voice. The first half of the album contained many memorable songs such as "Kids" that brilliantly captured youthful innocence combined with the bitter sweetness of having to grow up anf become an adult. The second half was clearly inspired by the Beatles and Pink Floyd, with riffs like Harrison on guitar, and innovations that paid homage to greats. 3.5/5
If it is possible to have a psychadelic pop easy listening album, this is it. I dont mean this in a bad way. I just found it easy to have on in the car, in the background. Might be because rhat one song Kids got flogged on triple J and most of their songs sound a bit the same, so my brain auto-defaulted there.
First half is much better than second by far
First half is a 5/5, second half is a 3 or maybe even slightly less, it feels like a 3 overall even with such good stuff in the first half. If Congratulations comes up I'll give it a 5 tho
173. nice
sounds i'm familiar with sounds i'm tired of sounds that felt nostalgic before turning into annoying and forgotten 3/5
good pop music nothing outstanding
These guys completely passed me by at the time, and let's face it - Rock music as a commercial force was completely dead and anything interesting was buried. I knew a couple of these songs, from adverts, but had not listened in full. Good lyrics. Guy does a strange Mick Jagger impression with his voice. It's fine.
I was looking forward to this album based on the songs I know. I found the album as a whole to be lacking in depth and musicality.
kinda deluding, but the second part was lowk fire
Neoclassic it seems
Kids is a 5 star banger. Rest of album - including the other singles is not as good as I remembered. Feels a bit soulless and formulaic.
Mostly a good album. Has the bangers and some filler in between.
I remember the first time I heard electric feel. I was blown away. I thought it was amazing I went out and bought the album. I’m not sure if I really listened to it because all the hits were being played on the radio. So today I listened and it was kind of okay. The singles are still good even if I heard them a few hundred times. The rest is decent.
3.5
a little painful to listen to electric feel and kids in 2026 but they were so important for me developing my music taste as a child. sooooo nostalgic
Unique production sound but nothing that moving in any direction. Has a few high peaks and no deep valleys so we celebrate this. Highlights: "Time to Pretend, "Kids", "4th Dimensional Transition", "Future Reflections"
A pop album, but if you're a pop fan, a great album. I am not a pop fan.
Seemingly the poster band for this sound during the timeframe. First half is great but then it tapers off.
I heard Kids all the time back in the day, who could escape it, but I feel I heard it afresh and it was pretty darn good. I can’t remember the rest, so I think this is a case where I take the single and move on.
I was surprised that I knew several of these songs, although I could not have named the artist. This was pretty good indie rock. I might listen agsin.
Not exactly my kind of music. That being said, I still very much enjoyed it. It sounds like the 2010's despite being created only a year after I was born. A sound ahead of its time that I somehow found nostalgic.
The singles are OK but the rest is nothing special. The album tails of badly near the end. Not one I will ever listen to again.
Some singles and some fillers.
Ok
Enjoyable but probably wont revisit it.
i wanted to like it more than i did because i've always been interested in this band but it didn't quite hit for me. performance felt just a bit whiny in parts.. but i did like it more than albums from the 50s-80s i've listened to on here. i didn't want to submit to this notion but yeah music does change throughout the ages and i'm just a zoomer chud loser so of course i like the 90s-2010s more fave track: electric feel
The singles from this album were huge, top 10 songs of my high school era. You couldn’t escape them. I really liked these songs back then but never did the whole album. I always got the feeling these guys lucked into fame because of some of the bad singing and questionable tones and mixing on this album, but it’s clear everything was purposeful. While the singles are impressive, the album as a whole didn’t stay as consistent as those singles.
2nd attempt. Website is jank. Idk chronology but the songs i havent heard at kohls sound like portugal the man. The last two songs sound Phishy. 3 stars only bc idk if I'd buy it.
I really like this album. The beats and lyrics are soft and welcoming, and such a great background groove. I need to expand my knowledge of them.
Theres throws of these albums. In that they're not bad, the tunes are catchy, and I could easily put on in the background. What they don't evoke in me is passion to sing along and defend the artist like they're my secret friend who I know anything about at all.
Not bad, nothing I really loved either, had one or two songs that I added to my playlist, of Moons, Birds, and Monsters was my favorite.
↑: Weekend Wars; Electric Feel; Kids; Of Moons, Birds & Monsters ↓: Pieces of What
It's hard not to feel a ~little~ nostalgic listening to some of this. I know they've yet to come close to reaching similar heights, but MGMT is alright in my books.
got me feeling like barack obama never left office :)
Not a bad album, but not my thing. The front half is electronic and poppy, the back half a little weirder and more interesting, ditching all the electronica and just using normal instruments. If they hadn't done the switch, it would have been boring. My Rating: 3/5
suuuuuuuuuuper swaggy
2.5 stars Hipster anecdote. I saw Of Montreal on 2007 and MGMT opened for them. I didn’t know MGMT and recall sending a text (using T9) saying “bored watching the opener. They’re called mgmt.” A year later they were huge. I didn’t put together that the band who performed the song blasting on the radio constantly (“Kids”) was the same band that I was bored watching a year before. Anyway, not sure if I ever listened to this whole album. I think I tried to but got bored at the non singles. Similar experience this time around. Their 3 singles are superstar level, but their filler tracks range from generic 00s indie to Animal Collective wannabes (which is just a very specific type of generic 00s indie). It’s not terrible but it’s not enthralling. But the singles (“Time to Pretend”, “Electric Feel”, and the mentioned “Kids”) are all really good and give this short album enough credit to be a pass, but not a must listen necessarily.
The singles are SO iconic and of that specific time period. But the rest of the album is a little bit of a snooze.
Not bad although I prefer 11-11-11.
Nice music, original, but not a master piece.
It's alright. Not that spectacular
Pretty good. MGMT is a band I heard of before but this was my first time listening to them.
crazy debut but i only really liked the ones that were the most popular lol. however made me very impatient for summer to start soon
One good song and the rest was meh.
Some absolute bangers, generational defining songs. Among complete sleepers.
Not especially memorable, but still decent.
i really wish i could leave half star reviews, because in my heart this is a 3.5: some classic hits, some fun stuff, some calm songs. mgmt is cool but this album left me wanting more. idk
I feel like the three most popular songs on this album were the highlights and the rest of the album didn't really capture the same energy as them. I am a bit disappointed - I found the rest of the album okay, but nothing spectacular.
I doubt if I'll ever come back to it, but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Decidedly okay album
Some great songs and some real duds.
First track, i thought these are one.hit wonders, then it turned out there was more i recognised. It was a pretty enjoyable listen, 3.5*
I had some high hopes here, but nothing really came together
Trending toward the washed-out style of 2000 and 2010 music that I don't like, but this isn't bad, especially if you think of it as music to dance to.
Such a nostalgic album! Feels so summery, just such a good vibe! Fav song has to be ‘Kids’.
If you listened regularly to the radio during the naughties, it was hard to escape the sound of this band. There's a bit of Bowie bobbing around, some anti-war rhetoric and some relatively low-key prog composition. Overall, it's a bit lightweight for me, but decent enough. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (6/10) Total reviewed : 286 Already owned : 63 Purchased : 15 To buy : 3 Nope : 205
Top Songs: Time to Pretend Of Moons, Birds & Monsters
Alright album, a few songs that I know well but have never known who wrote them, so nice to find out that!
On its surface, a good chunk of the album reads like yolo shit. But having never listened to MGMT, I'm happy to say that I was able to dig a little deeper and find that below that initial knee jerk is an album that is surprisingly poignant and well-arranged most of the time. It feels like it was made by people who were in their prime and realized it for commentating purposes before it was too late, and based on their age at the time of release that seems to be the case. The first 5 tracks are outstanding. Time to Pretend, again, reads on the surface like "tonight we are young so let's set the world on fire" type crap, but pushes past it as a call to specific action instead. That action, I assume, being to start the band and find new success while sacrificing some old stuff and comfort of mundanity. Love the last repeating stanza of Weekend Wars. The Youth has a killer chorus melody and modulation later. Electric Feel is a great "if you don't count it like a nerd" tune. I hear the band ended up hating Kids, but I don't get it. It's avg pop as far as progression goes, but I love it lyrically. Unfortunately, that track is the climax of the album for sure and things cool down rather quickly from there. The back half isn't bad, but it is kinda forgettable. I'd give it a 3.5 or so.
This was great and over much too fast.
teenpop of 00s
This was peak around my college and clubbing days. Catchy and innovative. Was never a huge fan though. 3/5.
Liked time to pretend, kids and electric feel. Very nostalgic but I don’t have much of a connection with the rest of the album
This is very 2007. To be honest, I wonder if there's any album from this era I'd rate highly. Just not my time. However, I think this is tuneful and accomplished. Instruments and voices well used to create an enjoyable enough sound.
Mildly disappointed by this one, sadly. MGMT seems/is right up my alley but they're definitely a band that shines best in their singles and suffers in everything else, giving this entire album an uneven tilt. It's definitely an ambitious album with an iconic soundscape, you can't deny that. it's just very mid-2000s Burning Man I guess. fav tracks: Time To Pretend, Kids, Electric Feel, Of Moons, Birds & Monsters
Paved the way for others. Some decent uni memories thanks to these chaps.
Better than I expected by a fair amount. Kids is a classic track.
I wasn’t looking forward to this as I really don’t like the two big hit singles from it. It’s actually pretty decent - musically interesting and bags of ideas
Not much to say. It wasn't awful, but it's also nothing I would listen to again. Music was alright. Vocals were meh.
A couple of bangers and interesting lyrics. Dunno if I would listen to me whole thing again.
This is fine. It illustrates the eras maximalist sound. There are a few good singles but there is nothing groundbreaking here. Its pop music, its well done but no one is going to war for it.
Nice album, have really top songs and songs that are in the clima of the album but don’t say any different.
The hits are the hits the rest is good
Quite upbeat
RYM 2.5
I knew the singles but never really paid this band much attention A few weeks ago I heard someone on the radio talking about the lyrics to Time To Pretend and how dark they are, I listened to them lyrics properly for the first time and they were right. I really like Kids too but plenty of the other tracks didn't do much for me. I think they pull from w lot of influences that just don't do much for me. It feels a bit like The Flaming Lips but less interesting and with less heart.
solid
Fine, the singles are still great but the rest is mainly filler
There’s some decent tunes. Overall, this isn’t quite my vibe but I can understand the loveFor this album.
cool
Time to Pretend Electric Feel Kids
hello years of functional Alcoholism lol
3.25 - Several bangers. Better than their other albums.
Eh
My first listen, it does have nostalgic tones. Two obvious standouts: Kids and Electric Feel, otherwise technically well produced. However, I would only go back for the two standout songs.
Enjoy the song writing, and crafty pop interplay along with the political themes; but can’t say I felt particularly moved by the music as a whole.
The singles are pretty good, and Kids in particular has a massive nostalgic place in my heart, but overall it's pretty meh. I get that at the time it was kind of fresh and exciting and important in the dancey/indie/synth thing, but there just aren't that many good songs on it
An enjoyable album of music. Had a great time. I feel like these songs feel more at home as singles on a playlist rather than in a full album like this. Something about the full unit here just didn't coalesce for me in a way I can't really explain.
3 fantastic songs and a lot of meh
Good
It didn’t surprise me, but the most popular songs on here were for sure my favorites. The others simply seemed less inspired and less my speed. I do like what they’re doing throughout and see a lot of consistent effort but the most groovy and enjoyable tracks are for sure Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, and Kids. I didn’t particularly dislike any other songs either, simple thought they were good enough in comparison.
Me gusto. Tiene canciones conocidas.
Top heavy. The hits are recognizable, but the rest of the album falls a little flat. 3/5 Probably won't listen again
A strange album that isn't really great. It has three great songs that I have heard many times over the years and the rest are kinda eh. The 2nd half is pretty mediocre and the lyrics aren't great. Listening to MGMT is for the beats and mood.
This felt very familiar although I didn’t think I had heard the album before. It’s probably because certain tracks have been sampled to death on TV and in adverts, but also because they sound similar to The Flaming Lips, so I might just be getting confused.
Overall a good album but some songs weren’t that good
Solid
Goeie debuutplaat, paar classics, 3,5
An interesting listen. Fun arrangements. A few hooks. 40 minutes, which is an ideal album length. A good entry on the list.
Time to pretend och kids känns såklart igen!
2007 comes roaring back with MGMT's "Electric Feel" and "Kids." Great hits. The rest of the album had that enjoyable funky sound.
holy nostalgie 3.5 tho
Reminds me of getting trampled watching them at Leeds. 7.5
Kids has a memorable hook. Other than that, this is pretty forgettable.
Not as good an album as I remember but Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, and Kids obvious bangers.
Kind of merges together, the songs all feel very similar. Not really my type of music, but I can appreciate it’s vibe and it’s hits are indeed bangers
I've never heard of this band. The music on the album was okay, although I'm not quite sure why it's on the list. I might listen to it again, but I'm not sure. 3/5
Got lost between the songs. Loved i heard some songs from old fifa games
The album is fine - short, lots of similar songs. Plenty of memories listening to this when it was new. I mean the idea of MGMT is cool - the two kids in school making tunes - and they are amazing tunes, no doubt there. Weekend Wars is cool - I like them, never loved, but they have their place
i loved this album a lot when i was like 14, i think it’s maybe not as good as i thought it was. but i do still like it
This has never been my favorite band, but I'm glad they stopped trying to do things like 'Electric Feel' and 'Kids,' because I don't think those songs are very good. This whole album is patchy but Fridmann's production is really good, I adore 'Time to Pretend.' 'Of Moons, Birds & Monsters' was the one that stood out to me this time around. WEIRD ONE!!!!
Lot of iconic melodies, however other songs feels a bit bland
Some good stuff, however became tiresome after the first two or three tunes.
Kids is a 5 star banger. Rest of album - including the other singles is not as good as I remembered. Feels a bit soulless and formulaic.
It's funny when people were surprised that these two weirdo's second album wasn't all pop hits. Won't lie that I'm also here for the bangers but they're also doing some interesting stuff in the more psych areas.
Time to Pretend and Kids feature some of the most iconic synth riffs this side of 2000. Beyond those hits and the catchy Electric Feel, there's not much that stands out besides lyrics that range from inane (The Youth) to cringeworthy. According to MGMT, childhood consists of picking bugs or worms from their natural habitat, and an attractive girl is best compared to an electric eel. Clearly, we're best off not thinking this through too deeply. The music has some interesting points - the percussion on 4th Dimensional Transition calls Vampire Weekend to mind, and the dreamlike backing instrumentals of The Youth are pleasant, though the song begins to annoy by the finish. However, this is an altogether uneven effort held afloat by the inescapable synth hits.
3.4 stars
I know 3 of the songs here (Time to Pretend, Electric Feel and Kids) pretty well! They were unavoidable around the time and I dare say they were used in some snowboarding movies, which I was watching a fair few of at the time and I think all 3 of them are great and undeniably catchy! They help to make up quite a strong first half to the album, even though the other 2 tracks aren't at that level. But because of that, it's very front-loaded, and the second half drops off quite a bit with nothing really to anchor it, it really just drifts until the end.
Kuuntelin salilla.
They had quite a few hits off this album. The ones that ended up being popular make sense because the rest are just a bit too repetitive and not as interesting. Overall fine album
Truthfully a 3.5. I feel like a lot of the songs sound the same but when there's a banger, you know its a banger. Anything outside of Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, and Kids is just kinda mid but still enjoyable though.
Not super interesting, did what it needed to and was nice for some ambient background though
I know a bunch of the songs there all nice
Heard part of it before but it was nice to hear the rest
got sum bangrs
songs from this album have been playing on the radio my entire life and I was born in 2008...pretty impressive idk
i have listened to this already it was fun
Weird to find this on the list. Not sure I needed to revisit this but giving it a passing score for nostalgia.
Enjoyable fluff. 3.5
what the hell sure...... pieces of what??? pieces of WHAT??????????? 3.5
Most of it isn’t really my jam but “Electric Feel” is a great song.
Almost 4 ⭐️
I mean it is iconic
Faves : Time to pretend The youth Electric feel Note : 6,2/10
Not quite as dead bang awesome as I remember
7/10 Favourite: Time to Pretend Least Favourite: Pieces of What
Good Solid Album
I listened twice but couldn't see why this one caught the eye. Perfectly fine but not spectacular.
Plenty of nice ideas on this album, usually executed well although my personal antipathy towards this eras Indie rears it's ugly head again and I did find the production a little insipid. For some reason this album sounds like it could only have been made by two early Millenials with memories solely rooted in post-Wall Pax Americana.
MGMT was a pretty big band around the time I started seriously listening to music, and as popular (and alternative for the 2000s) sounding as they were, I think I was more focused on stuff like Justice, Aphex Twin, Pendulum or Daft Punk for electronic sounding stuff. Certainly for Pendulum with how they blended rock and roll with drum and bass. MGMT I think was too "poppy" for me, what with Electric Feel and Kids being played enough times to help bankroll the band I mean record label for a good while. I think the production on the album is aging very well, the songs themselves are mostly fine. Vocals are eh, the synth-lines are mostly great and sound properly abrasive/distorted. It's weird this album is known for its hooks (Electric Feel and Kids mainly, Time to Pretend is fine) but I think the overall sound and production on this album is what saves it from being some ordinary millennial indie pop bullshit slop. But for pop based lyrics and hooks, this is about two standard deviations above the norm (this is good). They aren't bad songs but it's more like looking at it like a microscope is more fascinating than the fully zoomed image we're accustomed to seeing. tl;dr: not as cringe as I thought it would be I think stuff like "The Youth", "4th Dimensional Transition" and "Of Moons, Birds and Monsters" is better than the lead singles. Otherwise it's an alright album. As popular is it is/was, I can't feel myself strongly disliking it or digging it, save for the production. It gets a pass
This is a good pop album. I like the odd song with hints of the Kinks. Good variety and song writing. Songs that will stand the test of time. Just not an album that is overly to my tastes for repeat listening.
a selffulfilling prophecy.
Nostalgia gave this album a big boost but when I listened I realised quite a lot is actually quite dull.
I know the singles, of course, but never actually listened to this at the time. The hits are hits. The rest is fine.
The hits kind of make up for the boring songs. But the boring songs really take away from the flow of the album.
4/6
The hits are the hits, but the rest drags a bit.
Outside of the three obvious standout singles which admittedly are somewhat catchy, the rest of this was pretty forgettable. Would I turn the dial if this came up on a playlist? Probably not. Will I be digging deeper into this band’s catalog? Probably not.
Does anyone NEED to hear this before they die? Unsure. I do know that if you walk around this earth for 10 minutes you are going to hear Electric Feel and/or Kids, and I think you’d get the point by then.
Tempted to round up based on the three singles, but I find myself skipping their stuff whenever it comes on a playlist. Mostly due to overexposure vs. being crap. I can't see myself ever reaching for one of their albums so have to keep in 3* range. 3.5/5
The three big hits are still incredible, especially if you can remove yourself from what I assume is the nearly universal experience of having heard the songs one million times before. The rest of the album doesn't speak to me as much even though I couldn't shake the feeling that it *should* because there's a lot of music in the same neighborhood as this that I have really loved. I believe my rating is the best numerical approximation of the sum of these feelings
nostalgicccc i really like their popular songs, im not the biggest fan ever.
3.0 - Ok
Twee pop. Not bad...heard worse, heard better.
Liked this more than I thought, but still probably not a must hear, unless youre trying to recall songs used in advertising jingles.
This is not a must-hear album. It's not a great album. But it does have 3 of the most brilliant sounding tracks of the 00s. Those three tracks are a must-hear, though at this point, you must have already heard them. Hard to judge MGMT as a whole, however, given that they are pretty much a self-labeled joke band from the start. They were never serious...but accidentally dropped a few killer tracks. Not a great album. But 3 really amazing tracks from the 00s.
The 3 big singles hold up as perfect pop songs but the rest of the album hasn't aged all that well for me.
Standouts Time to Pretend Electric Feel Kids
Where I got my undergraduate degree has space limitations on titles so a lot of the time they would just remove every vowel from the title to get it to fit, or come up with things like this in replace of management. Other than that little bit this was a fine Electro pop album not one I would turn off but also not one that I would go back to.
Achei legal. Moondrop May.
Famous songs but not my thing. My standouts are what you expect.
thought it was a perfectly fine album - didn't recognize any of the names of the songs or the band name until the first song started playing, then I realized these were songs used in the Minecraft movie
Going into listening very familiar with their top three songs Time to Pretend, Kids, and Electric Feel. Three songs that could very easily make it onto the 'soundtrack of my life.' Songs that are certainly still in rotation for me! We will see how the rest of the record holds up. This album is certainly help up by their three most popular songs. I also enjoyed Weekend Wars, but other than that the rest of the album really falls flat and does not live up to the high ceiling of those tracks. How many stars are those three songs worth? They are truly bangers. They would be top choices for a drive out to the lake with the windows rolled down in July. I am going with 3 stars.
Oh dearie me. I'm approaching #5 in my list with some trepidation. Completely unfamiliar to me. I've listened to the first track. It's not setting my world on fire. Sampled the rest. Just not for me.
Album 8/1001. Listened 1/16/2026. I enjoyed some of the tracks; some I actually even knew! Not a genre I tend to listen to, but I liked the album overall.
Distinct sound
I didn't love it, I didn't hate it. I don't want to listen to it again though. I remember when electric eel came out, and a few of the other songs made me feel nostalgic.
I'm a bit torn with this one. The popular stuff has been played to death, but is ok, I guess. There is some skippable junk that didn't need to be included. Also, some pretty cool explorations on the second half.. It's a fence sittin' 3
Highlights: - … Time to Pretend - Electric Feel - Kids
3.5 ⭐️ liked this more that expected!! it’s giving skins gen 1 in the best way possible
The big songs are strong, but I feel I've heard the rest of it done by other, better bands.
Not my vibe
The track lineup has four classic songs that defined MGMTs sound. I liked the various time signatures in the records.
after the first listen; gave just the second half of this a relisten to try and think about the album more objectively - came to the same conclusion, that i don’t like it as much! i like when ‘pieces of what’ kind of opens up but it’s also a little arm-wavey for me. ‘handshake’ and ‘future reflections’ are songs i feel i could warm to. huge familiarity bias of course, but i find the sound of the singles distinct from the rest of the album - i was expecting the same level of energy throughout and although the sort of expansive vibe is consistent, I didn’t get that from it. i do like the synth and experimental sound.
Very symbolic of a specific time. Idk if it aged super well
MGMT is another act I didn't really pay attention to as they came onto the scene at a time where I'd stopped really paying attention to popular music. So, making up for lost time, listening to 'Oracular Spectacular' with a fresh set of ears does give me greater appreciation for their music, although I'm not sure whether they'd be an act I'd consistently revisit. The big hits on this album; 'Time to Pretend', 'Electric Feel' and 'Kids'; are certainly worthy of their iconic status, as they're catchy as anything and are well produced, and I do enjoy the Stonesy swagger of 'Weekend Wars', but I can't help but find the rest of the album pretty forgettable, which is pretty indicative of an era were artists were moving away from the need to produce a cohesive album as long as there was the two or three breakout singles that would sell it. There's no denying the talent of MGMT. Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser are great songwriters who have a clear grasp of the audience they're marketing their music to, but I reckon 'Oracular Spectacular' would've worked better as an EP with those three massive hits and maybe 'Weekend Wars', as the rest of the record doesn't really hit the mark for me. Best songs: Time to Pretend, Weekend Wars, Electric Feel, Kids
Unpopular opinion maybe? Well, it's very mid for me. Some songs are very bland. Others? Not that bad, but, again, very mid. Not great at all. I get why it may be an interesting album for some, there are a few songs that are quite good, actually. But, overall, it's much of an indie album that meets electronic music with not much interest or taste. There are layers of some songs which are beautiful, but the result is far from being that nice. And, honestly, I wouldn't listen to it again.
The first half of this album is full of great memorable 2000s indie rock tracks like Kids and Electric Feel. The second half is boring psychedelic rock.
In hindsight, the singles contain a little sadness, much like the rest of the album
time to protest, electric feel, kids make me feel nostalgic. favorite of this album was the youth
wait i was so skeptical and it ended up being origin of so many tiktok sounds
Carried by a few heavy hitters
pleasantly surprised
Songs I knew were nostalgic. The rest was too much for my taste. 3/5 for nostalgia only.
Not my genre but intresting!
3.5/5 stars The first track - Time to pretend is a banger!!! the second track is not my favourite, it feels like it lacks something Youth was okay Electric feel is also a banger I really liked of Moons, Birds & Monsters I also love the sound of The Handshake !!!! Okay I think my new favourite ones are The Handshake, Future Reflections, and Of Moons, Birds & Monsters Time to pretend, Kids and electric feel I already knew and love sooo I would give this album a 3.5 out of 5 stars
3 massive hits on the album each as good as the last. ‘Pieces of what’ also stands out as well as album closer ‘future reflections’.
Before listening: I don't know if I've ever heard a song by them before. I've obviously seen the album cover and stuff scrolling, it's been offhandedly recommenced to me in the vague sense of "2000s music", a time period I just really don't listen to much. I would've been in 1st or 2nd grade when this came out, so there would be no way for me to hear it then. I kinda hope I at least like it somewhat. 1. Time to Pretend - I've probably heard this on a commercial or movie. The vibes are fun, the lyrics are meh. OH The 2nd verse I've heard of TikTok. 2. "Weekend Wars - Oh I like the sound of this, has Cage the Elephant vibes. Not vibing with the lyrics again lol 3. "Youth" - It's fine, I don't love or hate it. Wow tho, the optimism of the late 2000s to early 2010s really was something else. 4. "Electric Feel" - Okay, this one's actually really fun. Simple, but the production is nice and vibey 5. "Kids" - It's fine, the instrumental break is fun 6. "4th Dimensional Transition" - Okay, this one is cool. I like how the vocals end up in the background at one point with intense drumming in the forefront. 7. "Pieces of What" - Probably the best song on the album so far, I really like it. 8. "Of Moons, Birds, & Monsters" - Actually, I spoke too soon. This is the best one so far. I really like it, it's really cool. 9. "The Handshake" - This one is cool too. 10. "Future Reflections" - This one is pretty good too I think if this album was more like the 2nd half throughout it would be more my vibe. The first few songs, except for Electric Feel were meh to me. I'll probably come back to some of it, but not the album as a whole. 3.5/5
