Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Not one but two Goldfrapp albums are "must listens before we die"? I'm not sold. This one at least has "Human," which I'm kind of hearing for the first time in this context, but I know the sample from Kanye's "Freestyle 4" and the Tyler/A$AP Rocky remix that followed. Other than that, not much going on here. The other track I stored because it was goofy, so that's a consolation. We didn't need this one either. Favorite tracks: Human, Oompa Radar. Album art: I do like this cover a lot, and when I saw it pop up I could've swore this was the album with "Ooh La La." I was wrong. But yeah, this one is really memorable to me, it's been in my head for many years. 2.5/5

Dramatic, a bit spooky and weird. I would only select this for very few choice scenarios

Forgettable: I don't really remember this album at all with no heavy hitting songs to make you cry or sing along. Just meh but on the slightly bad side with a lot of the album being goofy noises and it flowing badly if anything.

The whole album sounds the same to me. And that sound is James Bond movie theme song. 2.5

Not memorable the other goldfrapp was better

We have Portishead at home: 5/10

day 11. on this episode of “never tell me the odds”: the odds of me drawing not 1 but TWO Goldfrapp albums by day 11… what is this. I once again have no idea how to describe this. some of it has a sexy-mysterious-haunting vibe I kinda like (first few songs & Horse Tears), but it got too weird and la-la-la and creepy clown for my taste in the middle with Deer Stop through Oompah Radar. I guess I do feel like I was taken on a strange, Alice in wonderland type journey and I dig albums that can take me away, so I kinda get it. I think I liked Seventh Tree more, but I’m not sure that I’ll be revisiting either of these enough to feel confident in that opinion. 2.5/5 rounded down to 2, maybe I’ll listen again if I’m in a weird mood, idk yet faves: Human, Lovely Head, Utopia

I didn't understand the point of any of this.I didn't understand the point of any of this. I heard "Utopia" once by itself and kind of liked it but I guess I can't take a whole album of whatever this was.

Way too down tempo...not my thing

Interesting, but not for me.

Not enough action for me.

really spacey but just meanders for a while not much music here human is used in a Kanye song which is funny 2.5

Goldfrapp? More like GoldCRAPP

Any time I listen to an album from 00’-08’ I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude that my formative musical years just avoided it. 2/5

An interesting album, though I'm not sure if I enjoyed it. Felt Mountain has a very experimental sound that I think, brings out sonically the difficulties in the recording process where Goldfrapp was often alone and disturbed by the mice and insects in the bungalow. Yikes. Generally I don't mind electronica, ambient and trip-hop sounds but the wailing lyrics brought it right down for me. Which is unfortunate, because when there was no wailing, it was really wasn't that bad. Best: Pilots Worst: Deer Stop

Didn't do it for me

Two Goldfrapp albums in 1001?!

Goldfrape

This completely passed me by when it was first released. I listened to so little new music around the turn of the Century. It all sounds very sincere and serious - which kinda sums up that turn of the Millennium period. There's not a lot of joy here. Some days I just want some dumb shit rock 'n' roll. It got interesting with some of the Latino rhythms on Human. But it wasn't sufficient for me to jump up and down and act like a twat. Today was a jumping up and down and acting like a twat type of day. I should perhaps come back to this after I've had dental surgery.

Snooze

At times the music was good. At other times not great. And at other times it sounded like circus music. The music is eccentric. The album felt like it was from a Bond film. I certainly don't want to listen to it again, but it is better than a one.

nao curti muito, baixo astral

Sounds like some rejected Bond songs from the Pierce Brosnan era.

Wow, this was boring. If they were shooting for a dream-like state, it worked, because a lot of it was putting me to sleep. There was no variety here, it was too ethereal. Nothing stood out from one song to the next. Moving on.

Dit klinkt dit als de soundtrack van elke James Bond film en de bandnaam vind ik verschrikkelijk.

Very slow and ethereal, feels like it should be a soundtrack for a casablanca-esque movie

This is like lounge meets electronic meets movie soundtrack - nice to have on in the background, but I don't understand why it's on this list. I might use Oompa Radar as background music for my haunted carnival, but wouldn't listen to it otherwise.

Lovely Head will never not remind me of Monkey Dust, so that’s worth a star. I wasn’t expecting the rest of the album to sound like that for some reason, but it’s all in much the same vein. It’s almost my style, but not quite - I’d probably appreciate it if I was in a very specific mood, but otherwise I’d get a little bored. Tracks 7 & 8 bring some welcome energy though. 2.5 stars.

Interesting but a bit melancholic for my taste

A slow album aesthetically pleasing soundscapes A sad album nicely produced

Esperava mais, tem um clima de cabaré chic, mas faltou sensualidade.

Super funky and cool, however need to be in the right mood for it.

Not my type of music. Some songs were okay and it’s not terrible to listen to, just not for me. Favourite song: - Utopia

Loved the first song, then song by song the album lost me. Good voice just sort of meh overall.

Cinematic triphop. At times the atmosphere created is magnificent, but more often than not the music fades into the background to the point that I didn't even notice when the album had finished.

This sounds like a collection of theme songs to movies I’ve never seen. I feel strangely emotionally severed from this record and despite beautiful moments I need to remind myself to keep focused on the songs… Quite often in fact. Pretty sure I’ve heard “Oompah Radar” in RuneScape at some point.

I liked it more than I expected to. I hate electronica as a genre in general so this is still a bad album, but it was very melodic and dark so I enjoyed it in that regard.

I've never heard of this group before but I like their name. oh i just went on wikipedia and found out that the lead singers last name is goldfrapp. that's pretty dope. I like her make up on the album cover. I think i like pilots. slow not super upbeat, very cinematic. it's giving james bond. i hate oompah radar. it's a 2

Sleepy

Wie Portishead, nur wesentlich flacher. Dafür zugänglicher. Aber will man das bei derlei komponierter Musik überhaupt?

New one for me. Modern take on Cabaret and pop standards with a more atmospheric soundscape. Tough to be honest it does like the B sides of a James Bond film soundtrack.

Not a fan of the musical style, but I recognize that they’re talented.

not for me

I literally almost fell asleep.

Too high pitched, hurt my ears

Just a bit too creepy electronic for me

Paired well with the rainy drive this morning. Doubtful I would listen to again

Strangely ethereal warbling. Not unpleasant, but does nothing for me.

dromerige, licht verteerbare muziek. Voor mij vooral achtergrondmuziek

Ei lähteny

I was going to say Portishead did it better, but as this thing goes on, it just gets more and more odd, in a way that Portishead isn't. It's definitely got its own thing going on, but it's a thing that I frequently found irritating.

Boring

N O I A

Not bad album very cinematic and the vocals are really nice

Too slow for me

Put together by an insane circus ringmaster

nice production. Found nothing in it beyond that.

was expecting to like this more than i did. think they found their stride on the next album.

Alison Goldfrapp's voice is amazing. Has a very trip hop, portishead vibe. Bit boring in parts

Pretty but overall kind of boring me to sleep. I like utopia and the first track!

Not an album of many words, however the instruments and sounds used create an eerie and off-putting feel. This isnt the sort of music that I would put onto a playlist however I see some of the appeal. This album is a 4/10. Favorite song(s): Utopia

J'aurais payé si cher pour ne jamais avoir affaire au trip-hop.

I have absolutely no idea when anyone would choose to listen to this

Goldfrapp reminds me of nothing as much as Portishead, minus the hip hop trappings, the edginess and the haunting and haunted quality of Beth Gibbons' voice. Instead we get Allison Goldfrapp, who is inoffensive but not especially evocative. That pretty much describes the music as well, which like Portishead is based on torch songs, exotica, spy soundtracks, and other assorted 50s and early 60s ephemera. I mean, this is not badly written or arranged, but it's been done before and much better. Felt Mountain is unforgivably bland. I never thought I'd say this, but I sorely miss the hip hop influence.

Not really my style but it was alright. By the end I had had enough.

nice but nothing essential. Pleasant background noise.

It felt like I was listening to a Bond soundtrack or something inspired by the circus at times. Admiringly this was one of my least favorite so far.

I feel like I've walked in on a David Lynch listening party. "Deliciously weird" as she calls herself. Like Madonna says, this is borderline.

Zu viel Geld für sowas - 2

This is like if Portishead was sadder and worse

not my THANGGG

It's a genre I like so I want to give it 3 stars but it's seriously so annoying I can't

Not my thing.

Not a big fan of this album. It was too weird for me.

Somethig different. This music is very special. I do not know if I like it or not.

Not great. Not. Great.

I wasn't totally impressed.

Ultra sexy sheek

most of it sounds like it belongs with a Bond movie from the 70s

Appreciate this but didn’t really like it. Their later stuff is more my style.

This was too weird for me, Felt like nonsense. 2/5.

Deer Stop is going into my hall of fame of most god awful "songs"

Weird and boring

Even people who like this type of music don't like this shit.

Was worried I was going to fall asleep the entire runtime. At least it doesn't drag on for too long, but incredibly boring and basic.

Not my type of music

Annoying.

Good lord. We've been in a slump with these records lately. These 2000s records are just so uninspiring. There has to be good stuff somewhere in this era but it's not on Felt Mountain that's for sure. Dull, repetitive, and way too pretentious for it's own good.

Et downtempo-album her. Ikke helt på nivå med Ray of Light. Rett og slett for kjedelig for meg i skrivende øyeblikk. Top 3: Utopia, Lovely Head, Paper Bag

Day 10 — Goldfrapp — Felt Mountain (2000) Listened: Mar 4, 2026 Genre: Electronica / Art Pop (Cinematic) Vibe: Dreamy, cinematic, haunting electronic Highlights: • Human Impression: Very cinematic and atmospheric with haunting vocals and unique electronic production. Feels almost like a dark movie soundtrack. Rating: 1.0/5 Keep songs? Human only Revisit album? No

Forgotten James Bond songs and fragrance commercial music

Felt mountain? More like felt longer than 39 minutes mountain! I did like that it was a little spooky sometimes

I don’t know about this one - I wasn’t too into it unfortunately.

Tedious and boring

Klang zu Beginn wie ein Bond Soundtrack, wurde aber zunehmend schlechter und das letzte Drittel nur noch schwer erträglich. Hat leider dann nicht mehr für die 2 gereicht.

I was not expecting ambient electronica based on my previous Goldfrapp experience, but it's what I got. I cannot believe you would do this Alison Goldfrapp.

Where did the author find these

Could not stay awake long enough to enjoy any of this

Yeah.....not too sure I can wrap my head around this one or why it would be considered for the Top 1001 list. Utopia was probably the best track of them all to me, but I might even consider that a stretch.

Imagine the worst James Bond theme song and then add an electronica vibe to it Tapped out after 4 songs. I couldn’t myself through that

Lovely head-5/10 Paper bag-4/10 Human-3/10 Pilots-4/10 Deer stop-3/10 Felt mountain-3/10 Oompah radar-3/10 Utopia-5/10 Horse tears-4/10

I live in New England where we have a kind of milkshake called a frappe. (pronounced frap) Frappes are delicious, creamy, and I feel better after drinking one. This album is like drinking a frappe a little too fast and getting an ice cream headache that go away for forty-five minutes.

Ughhhh

No just no!

Unremarkable

Boring

Nothing really to note. Pretty boring album with no particular standout tracks.

I dont really have an ear for appreciating songs in this style unfortunately. It felt too flat and drony.

Painfully slow and boring

Track 1: Is this a Bond theme tryout? Tracks 2 through 4: See comment 1. Track 5: What? Bad.

Seems like bizarre background music, not my vibe

0 of 5 I tried. It hurt my ears so bad. I could not make it through sorry.

Went my whole life thinking goldfrapp were a pop duo. They are in fact this nonsense

Achingly trendy, all the songs sound like musical beds for adverts. Not anything more than "passing fare".

This is like the Garbage Bond theme for an off-brand film. Nothing like some theremin (maybe theremin-adjacent) noise to add to the enjoyment of an album. Goldfrapp heard Portishead and thought they could do that. This is the score to a neo-noir film set in Paris. The theremin is back! I bet Zach Braff heard this and wanted to find a place for it in a moody sci-fi relationship on a spaceship film. I get the label "cinematic" when referring to an album now. Why wouldn't you add yodeling to your electronica, natural fit. A circus music interlude feels about right.

Maybe I just don’t get it but I really did not like this one

I'd give this a zero if I could, it's an absolute car crash. Why wouldn't you pick Julee Cruise or Portishead over this?

It reminded me of a music you'd hear in an elevator of a hotel that's trying to be cooler and sexier than it is. Barely made it to the finish line.

Weird futuristic movie sounds?

Not a fan, depressing

Not sure what kind of pictures this band has of the author but that’s the only way to explain them having 2 albums on the list let alone one. Combination of bad James Bond song with 80s tv theme show music with whispered vocals in a weird falsetto. Awful.

This album nearly put me to sleep and not in a good way. Absolutely zero energy but full of boredom and dullness. Watching paint dry would have excited me more.

This is an assault on the ears. Lets do the maths. 1001 albums over how many years, 4 decades, maybe more, but lets go conservative. Top 50 albums from each year x 40 years = 2000. Maybe a lot of dross in that figure so cut out half = 1000, which in turn should account for the best 25 albums of each year over the course of 40+ years. This album made it to 57 in the UK charts. I didn't need to hear this before I die.

The mix of electronic and cabaret style music does not blend well when listening to this album. Just weird vibes all round

Not for me 1/5

This is a weird one. Why is this on this list? The whole album sounds like a James Bond soundtrack. This album is so weird. It gets weirder as you go along. Oompah Radar? WTF?

1 Star (2/15)

chato. utopia é a melhorzinha.

Strange

This wasn't for me

No, I don’t want that.

kinda dramatic, kinda cinematic, really kinda boring. if I had a nickel for every time this list gave me demented circus music!

It’s finally time for the other Goldfrapp album! I came into this project with a very vague familiarity with Goldfrapp, but the songs I know by them aren’t on either of the albums on the list. I really enjoyed listening to Seventh Tree, giving it four stars. However, if I were to rate it today, I think I’d be more inclined to rate it as five stars. Either way, I’ve been looking forward to listening to Felt Mountain, and now I’ll finally get my chance! Well, for all the hype I built up for this album, I really didn’t care for it at all. I really wasn’t expecting this album to be filled with songs that were really slow. Yes, Seventh Tree had some slower songs on it, but it also had some up-tempo songs as well, and those moments were nowhere to be found on Felt Mountain. Goldfrapp also have plenty of songs that are full of great electronic hooks, but this album didn’t have any of that either. My biggest beef with this album is that it was just boring from start to finish. The songs on it were nice and pleasant, but I didn’t feel like any of them did anything interesting musically, nor did they have anything interesting to say lyrically. I still think Seventh Tree is great, but man, this was a huge miss for me, and I was not expecting it at all.

I was psyched for this because I’m a trip-hop fan. Oof. Torch song vocals with spacey electronics. Did not like.

Xmas music

Not my type of music

Is this some kind of theme song collection from a disney haunted house attraction or something?

Hardly noticed it but was relieved when YouTube Music went on to auto-play and something else came on so...

I neka. Dao priliku, nisam publika za ovakvu glazbu. Sign me out, next.

Could not get through this. Not for me.

The ambient lo-fi music just isn’t for me

Oh sweet Jesus. What is this going to be? I’ve never even heard of this band. Ah man the intro is rich. I didn’t expect vocals after the intro. Thought it might be instrumental. Old style torch singing. I do love the music. That modulated guitar/keyboard/keypad is pretty sick. The whistling and harpsichord is great. The vocals are ok, but the music shines here. Cool start. We’re sticking with this harpsichord hey? Fuck yeah. I mean the vocals are also continuing. Again, the layers of instrumentation are so cool, but I’m not sure how exciting the vocals are and how bad this will wear out its welcome over 40 minutes. So far, so good, but I can see tiring of the sultry whisper murmurs. Nah. First misstep to start. Is this a bond song? It’s catchy. The glitchy tech stabs accompanying salsa music tell me we’re not in the 60s anymore. Oh and anything remotely salsa-y is a sure fire skip. Of course I don’t skip anything here, but it was a skip in spirit. And we’re back to the low singing. It’s like a futuristic cabaret bar where you request personalized songs from an AI generated torch singer. The music is less interesting here. That really was a nothing song. Felt soulless. GET OUT OF MY EAR. Thank you. They backed up slightly. THEYRE BACK AHHHHHHHHHH. PLEASE GOLDFRAPP, NOOOOO. Why have we veered away from the music to focus on singing exclusively???? This sucked. Alright. Now we’re getting into silly yodelling. Like I get it. You think you sound good. Please be accompanied by good music. This one is a slight return to form. High pitched, whining instrumentation is cool but disappears/fades into boredom far too quickly. Papers please theme music. Not complaining. Also a vanishing of vocals for the beginning stages was a beautiful oasis. Buddy my “Oompa radar” is off the charts. Can’t sneak one of those fuckers past me. Anyway. This has devolved into more vocal exercises from our favourite AI cabaret singer. Nope. This sucks. I wondered aloud (in this very text box) whether or not this would get tired. It has. I have. This thing is dragging and has become a self-indulgent mess. The novelty wore off after two tracks. I’m reading about the band because I’m bored. It’s the singers name??? No way. She obviously believes she’s the second coming of Billie holiday. Another boring track. I was thinking “this next song sounds cool!” and it turned out that Spotify autoplayed a different artist. Yeah, I found this didn’t go anywhere. It’s dripping with this sense that the creators believe it’s the greatest thing ever. What started out as interesting sort of stayed with the same ideas for the entire duration of the album that got old and were never expanded on. 1.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Lovely Head

Just not my type of music

More like goldcrapp

Boring to me and the vocals easily got lost in the mix. 1.5/5

Good lord, this is one of the most boring albums I've ever heard, and I've listened to like 2 hours of sinewave drones. I can see the overlap with the trip-hop scene at the time, but doesn't even have any of the residual energy of hip-hop or beat-driven music. This is like stretching out rather genteel sounding pop and jazz into monotonous tapestries of nothing. 1*

if they play this for me while i’m on my deathbed, i will die afraid

Not sure what this is supposed to do for me, but it was one of the most boring albums ever

Whoever said goldcrapp was right

I know the good book says judge not, lest ye be judged, but I’m just gonna go out on a limb and say it: this fellas idea of albums to listen to before death and mine vary GREATLY.

Furchtbares Gewinsel!

Slightly goth 90s style electronic music from the 2000s. Gave it a chance and checking the artist top songs on apple music. Not for me.

Not my kind of music

Just no

I didn't mind Lovely Head but this is rough. Hard to listen to, far too many nonsense ambient or jarring noises. No thanks.

It supposed to be atmospheric, but it’s just annoying.

I tried…I really tried…but I couldn’t finish…it’s not the electronica, it’s that it sounds like soulless drivel to me

Jesus Christ, so boring. The album cover is 100x more interesting than the music. The only tolerable song was “Utopia” but I don’t even want to listen to that again tbh. No joy man, no joy. Fail.

Sehr chillig. Für mich zu chillig. Eher sleepish. Ich bin im Büro, muss noch was tun, sorry.

i’m not gonna lie, i don’t like this her voice is pretty nice, but i don’t enjoy this album, i don’t think the melodie’s are interesting, i respect the ideas but this isn’t really gravitating towards me very much.

Nope not a one. Why?

Wow this was interesting. They are trying way too hard to be different on here and it just comes out looking weird. Very atmospheric/etherial. Not my thing at all.

Wtf is this, James Bond?

This was real bad.

One long James Bond song

That was crap. At best it was audition to be the next James Bond chanteuse.

Worst James Bond soundtrack ever.

Haikeita säveliä vähään tyytyvältä duolta.

Interminable - I will die an extremely happy man if I never listen to this album again in my life.

Someone wake me up. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Not really my thing, overall did not enjoy it. 1/5 Won’t listen again

I found this quite boring overall, and just not my kind of music. It was like listening to a 40 minute long Bond film intro.

Not for me. 1/5

Just doesn’t grab you.

This was just weirdddd. I feel like these songs could be used in a black and white movie from like 70 years ago when something devastating happened and the main character is at a crossroads. But let’s leave it there. I don’t need to listen to this again.

A boring version of Portishead

Nah bro. I’ve done my electronica DJ bullshit time already. No more. This is weak, weird crap that I don’t like.

I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS

This whole album felt like an awful Bond soundtrack.

Oh this isn’t good

not my kind

Boring and samey

Yikes! Human is a good song, other than that I have absolutely no interest in this. I genuinely can't tell sometimes if it's her voice or a theremin but either way it doesn't sound right.

No...just, no

Their later records were fun and danceable. This was not. What IS this?

Nothing special.

Very slow and sleepy. Did not enjoy

So much trip hop and similar stuff, maybe I'm just getting unlucky

Another case where I do not understand what this album has of extraordinary

The boringest.

This was bad. Felt like they were trying really hard to be Bjork

Not for me no thank you

I don't get this at all

3/02/22

A really weird and rather dull album. Don’t feel like this one appealed much to me. Could never get into it. 1.6/10

I had heard of Goldfrapp before, and thought I enjoyed it more than this. This was some jazz-fusionesque slightly radioheadish scat nonsense.

Not my thing.

Not a fan

I didn't know this singer but listening to her I don't like. Sorry.

Boring

not good, weird

Super boring. Maybe a little like Enya? Very ambient/ethereal..... not much in the way of actual instrumentation.

Insipid, soul less and forgettable.

Just plain bad. Weird singing and background music. 1/10.

it's not bad, but too repetitive

What was that. Weird confusing sounds

big no

too poppy, bad chick movie music
