Reviews (page 4 of 8)
I can hear the Beatles influence in some tracks despite the language barrier. I like the idea of a music collective putting out an album.
Was a bit nervous about this one, but was pleasantly surprised! I really enjoyed the atmosphere here. It got a little long for my taste towards the end. However, I'd gladly add this to my library. I'm honestly taken aback by how much the instrumentals got me.
As a person fluent in Spanglish I understood just a little bit what these songs were saying, but I had no difficulty understanding the feelings behind these songs. To describe an album as "pleasant" sounds like a criticism or condescending, yet this is a very listenable album and an excellent example of how music can transcend language differences. I would recommend this album because it shows the British pop influence on music throughout the world.
some really lovely brazilian music — not knowing portugese, i had to rely on wikipedia to tell me about this album, but i’m reliably informed it’s very important. i don’t think it’s particularly relistenable for me, but i’m glad i listened to it once
At this length, I expected a more progressive reading of MPB; While that's not the case, every track earns its place on the list. More than anything, there's the distinctly Brazilian success: Relaxation with plenty happening in the rhythm section.
I'm completely unfamiliar with Brazillian pop music but this is really fantastic. Just super fun to listen to, great melodies and instrumentation, and a pleasant voice. Really glad to have discovered this here.
I've really been enjoying world music because of this challenge, I have no idea what they're singing about but it's great
Excellent example of Brazilian Jazz!
This is a really neat album. It mixes really well a bunch of types of music and pulls them all off fantastically. Relaxing, island vibes all the way through, just wish I could understand Portuguese :( 7/10
I didn't end up finishing this album, but really really liked it so far. had more of a pop feel than I expected, and cool guitars
Really dug the vibe of this album. Although I didn’t know what they were saying the instrumentation was fantastic. Fun stuff!
Just some beautiful songs. There’s this feeling of tenderness throughout the album that I really love, it just draws you in so much. Had a great first listen, will take a lot of time to fully process all of it. Faves: O Trem Azul, Nuvem Cigana, Clube Da Esquina N° 2, Trem De Doido
A little cheesy but not a bad listen or waste of time
I really liked this. Hard to pin down stylistically, sometimes reminding me of a certain era of neo-folk, other times in the vicinity of psychedelic rock, but not quite any of them. Never felt the language barrier more acutely, particularly with my vestigial high school/college Spanish giving me the feeling I often have hearing Portuguese - like I can almost pick out the words (but not quite). I liked the sound of whatever it was anyway, and the signing very much.
Very nice, some really gorgeous songs in this. Fav tracks: Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser, O Trem Azul, Nuvem Cigana, Trem De Doido. It’s a very long album, ultimately I think a 4/5.
This was more enjoyable than I expected, and I think it's a bit impressive for the time. I didn't love it quite enough for a 5 star, but maybe it'd get such a rating upon relistening to it. Awesome album, glad I got to listen to it. My favourite songs were Paisagem Da Janela and Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo.
Nice combo of world music and Beatles influence, but it loses a point for the absolute chicanery of panning the entire track all the way to the right on an early song
Not what I was expecting, sounds quite modern and perhaps inspired some indie singer songwriters like Phosphorescent and Kings of Convenience that aren't obviously "world music" adjacent. Pretty good
This is classified as MPB just like Jorge Ben's Africa Basil, but they have almost nothing alike, as that sounded funkier and dance-like whereas this is more like a fusion between baroque pop and psychedelic folk, and although fitting to American contemporaries like Tim Buckley, it reminds me more of contemporary folk artists like Fleet Foxes. It's groovy and at times ethereal, especially with his echoey falsetto. I'm not too familiar with Brazilian music, but I can hear the Latin American sound in the acoustics, but I can hear all sorts of genres such as classical in "Um Girassol" and jazz in "Me Deixa Em Paz". The best part was all the strange psychedelic noises and sudden shifts in sounds that many would consider excessive but I found them to be engaging. There's something unique about every song, and there were plenty of outstanding highlights, but several of them were lame and didn't contribute much. This is especially problematic with the hour-long length that seemed to drag on in, becoming tiresome by the final third. Favorites: Tudo O Que, O Trem Azul, Nuvem Cigana, Cravo E Canela, Clube Da Esquina N2, Paisagem Da Janela, Pelo Amor De Deus, Nada Sera
A fantastic album. Didn't get a chance to relisten to it but I've listened to it recently and loved it.
Very good Brazilian music. Nice find.
Quite lovely. A nice blend of soft psychedelia, baroque pop and some of the rhythms one associates with Brazil. A fairly lengthy listen but a gentle journey, and one I fully enjoyed throughout.
Esto estuvo muy bueno.
I don't quite know what I was expecting, but I enjoyed what I found.
I enjoyed this album a lot. It has those rich layers I always love, lots of variety and experimentation, always with solid grooves and great instrumentation. I feel a bit out of my depth reviewing and rating an album that isn't in English, though - as one reviewer put it, I have no idea what he's saying but I have no reason to doubt it! I definitely enjoyed the he listening experience and will be playing this again! For the excellent instrumentation and overall coolness factor 4/5
VERY good, just shy of 5
A delight from top to bottom.
Enjoyed this! My only issue was it felt a little drawn out towards the end, but it definitely deserves another listen.
I like it
I'm a big fan of Brazilian music - especially from that era - I love bossa nova. So I guess I was expecting something similar. This is much different though. It still has this amazing warmth mixed with melancholy to it that is so typical for Brazilian albumst that I've heard. However, I got lost on some tracks - maybe it's because it's a long album with many songs and I feel like I'm missing out on a lot due to not understanding the language. Trem de doido is a magnificent track - mixing the fuzz guitars with the calm and warm vocals is just perfect. Other songs I remember: tudo que voce podia ser and Um girassol da cor de seu cabelo (with that outro!) 4/5 trem de doido
My favorite was the first song. Not really my type of music. In a different language. Kind of reminded me of anime music but it wasn’t in Japanese
Lovedd
A good listen even if I can’t understand a word.
This was amazing. Adding it to my regular listening catalogue. Great for while I’m working. Pleasant. Not abrasive!
I don’t know what’s he’s saying, but it sounds pretty good. I like the overall tone of the music and the emotions in the vocals.
Opener was really good, can't understand the language, but the music speaks mine. Love the emotion shown by the lead singer and the emotion if the instruments in the first track. These emotions continue throughout the rest of the album, absolute joy to the ears that it has even an American sounding sound in general. Based off of that alone, I would give this album a 7.5-8.
Tudo o Que Você Podia Ser- this is very groovy, with great changes in song👍 Cais - almost wistful song, had weird stereo bit at the end O Trem Azul - this was really catchy👍 Saidas e Bandeiras n° 1- very lively interlude Nuvem Cigana - another lively song Cravo e canela - love backing vocals, again catchy👍 Dos cruces - I feel ballads are harder to get into without understanding the lyrics because much more stripped down instrumental. Gets enjoyably dramatic at the end. Um girassol da cor do seu cabelo - has a slower part, then a discordant interlude where after the music picks up speed and intensity very cool👍 I should remember to save, lost last few songs of first half paisagem de Janela -didn't really grab me, also very quick fadeout at end Me deixa em paz- very nice female vocalist on this one👍 Os povos- bit dull Saidas e Bandeiras n°2 - very similar to before Um Gosta del sol - quite long song with drawnout instrumental at end Pelo amor de Deus - this is v interesting and quite distorted👍 Lilia- mostly instrumental with frankly annoying whelping in the background Trem de Doido - nice electric guitar👍 Nada sera COMO antes - didn't grab me Ao Que Vai Nascer- again a bit laid back to start, then again livens up For a album where I can't understand the lyrics, this managed to retain my attention 4/5
first listen lovely MPB
The sound of summer. Pass me a cocktail.
Must revisit
I was very surprised by how good this was! A great discovery that I will certainly return to often.
A refined album recorded by outstanding musicians. I loved the subtle and soulful mix of jazz, folk and Latin music, with a little psychedelic and bossa nova touch. I will come back to this album for sure, even if I found it a little long winded for something that is on the same mood all the way through.
funky stuff i enjoyed
First listen. I love Brazilian tunes. Good album.
Enjoyed it, good dinner/cooking music
What a gem! Glad to have heard it! Beautiful voice, guitar, recording.
Didn't listen to this vey closely but I really liked what I heard.
What's good with this project is that I can broaden my horizons thanks to choices I would not necessarily make all by myself. I don't know enough about Brazilian music, but I know that I enjoy a lot what I'm hearing right now, and it's enough for me in certain genres. Some of the songs' finales are especially impressive. I was only vaguely aware of who arranger Eumir Deudato was before (through Björk), and it's nice to finally hear how fabulous he can be. As it's nice to discover Milton Nascimento and Ló Borges, two great songwriters with endearing voices and presence. I could go on and give details on the unmistakable seventies feel I sense out of this record. I could even try to compare it to the one of American and British rock classics of that same era (it seems the "international" influence is definitely there). But I won't. It's nice to stop the fake TED Talks once in a while and just smell the roses. Because they smell the same, whether in Brazil or Britain and the US. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 837 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 90 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 40 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important: 34 (including this one)
7/10. All kinda blended together after a while, but ultimately pleasant
There’s some really cool stuff on this album and somehow I had heard a couple tracks before. Loses points for being somewhat drawn out with a couple snoozers. 8/10
Lived this album. Varied yet stylistically consistent, it was engaging was from beginning to end
A fascinating album, that meanders through multiple genres yet somehow they always sound like themselves. At times it even reminded me of 17th-century opera (San Vincente). It's a shame I don't speak portugese!
Intriguing. There’s some classic Brazilian goodness here but it’s clearly more than just a traditional samba/bossa nova album. A lot of styles are thrown together and some of the changeups in the middle of tracks are quite surprising. Double albums are always a bit overwhelming, and I feel like I’d get more out of some of the slower songs in particular if I understood the lyrics, but sometimes the beautiful melodies speak for themselves, like on ‘Ao Que Tai Nascer’. ‘Clube Da Esquina No 2’ also seems deeply familiar and evocative, but I genuinely don’t know if that’s just because I remember it from when I listened to the album a few hours ago… Overall, a lot to like. 3.5 stars.
I don't speak Portuguese. My knowledge of Brazilian music is restricted to the Brazilian albums I've heard on this playlist. You can definitely find more insightful figures discussing this album than me. But the album does delight, and any hesitancy I have over it may be due to my ignorance. God, I sound sagacious. Anyway, from what I have gathered, Clube da Esquina is one of the standout works of música popular brasileira, a mid-60s amalgam of standard Brazilian genres (bossa nova, samba, that sort of thing) with the recently imported jazz and rock. This album embodies the eclecticism of MPB, an eclecticism which accounts for this being a double album: they had so much to include. This makes the listener worry that Clube Da Esquina may possess the basic double album faults of becoming sluggish or staying long enough to grow whiffy, but I would say it largely avoids such failings, proving itself a dense yet lucid and soulful artifact. I can't guarantee that every song will appeal, but the open-minded should find plenty to cheer. I pause over giving it five stars, solely because of my own inexperience with Brazilian music. This may deserve a firm five, but right now I am not the one to gauge that accurately. And one can envisage Quentin Tarantino using the the end of the song Um Girassol Da Cor De Seu Cabelo for a scene of an Indigenous woman splitting Andrew Jackson's skull repeatedly with a tomahawk; if such a scene occurs, the album will instantly fall beyond rescue as terminally uncool. By the by, this generator used to credit the album only to Milton Nascimento. Thanks to me pointing out his absence, the generator now lists Lo Borges as well. Just one of my little contributions to making the world a better place. (Actually, Clube da Esquina was the name of the collective that made the album, Nascimento and Borges being the specific members who received accreditation. And the D shouldn't be capitalised in the title. There's only so much I can do before I become annoying.)
I didn't understand most of the words, but the music was great.
Why do Brazilian male vocalists always sound so sad? It must be the Portuguese influence. Maybe they're channeling Fado? The first song is lovely opener and there are a number of other songs that catch one's attention (Like Trem Azul, Girassol and the title track). I like the mix of styles - the occasional introduction of piano which is uncredited but I'll assume is Milton and the strings which at times sound Beatles-like. It's the sort of LP that grows on you. I only gave disc 2 one listen but I'll round up.
Realmente é execução primorosa da música brasileira. Percebe-se a força da concepção do álbum.
This is a hard one for me to rate as I am not really familiar with this style of music. Language was also a barrier and the times the album lost me is when I feel the lyrics would have carried the songs. It did sound amazing and had such a interesting blend of sounds
Like all Brazilian music from this era, it's quite relaxing to listen to. 7/10.
looks preachy but first song sounds nice. portuguese I think?
Enjoyed this and it set me off for a day of listening to Brazillian pop. I kept catching glimpses of beatles and late sixties influence through a Latin lens. Definitely coming back to this.
dette var faktisk sjukt bra
Well, I learned a little something about making assumptions today. With the cover and the title, my mind went straight to "Cuban jazz album". First, it wasn't Cuban but a Brazilian pair of artists I later learned. Also, get this, other parts of the world can have more than one genre of music! It's not jazz at all but a South American-style psychedelic rock album (with some jazzy elements at times maybe). Overall I liked the album, had some great sounds and riffs. It's quite lengthy, but nothing wrong with that and the songs themselves didn't overstay their welcome. Lastly, looking back at the cover art part of me wonders if this is the two artists as childhood friends. Not sure, and I don't want to go looking to find out but that will be what I believe it is.
So compelling!
I really enjoyed this music from Brazil and would love to give this a listen again.
This is stuff I would never listen to normally. Its different, slightly proggy and refreshing. The production is wonderfully naturalistic. A double album is perhaps too much. I will return to it.
Really enjoyed this mixture of different styles, all with Latin roots. Great light and shade. Would listen again.
This Brazilian jazz/folk album became the soundtrack for my driving around the remote Western Irish countryside. It was a perfect match - obviously. I thought I wasn't a fan of this genre - but this was a massive eye (ear) opener - occasionally reminiscent of an early Chuck Mangione live album ("Friends and Love"). And not being much of a vocal fan in general the old time low-mix of vocals here is appropriate to appreciate the music; filled with unpredictable chord progressions, tempo changs and dynamic arrangements. Some of the guitar work fits alongside the early 70s progressive movement. Favourites are tracks 1 ("Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser") and 3 ("O Trem Azul") It's long which probably prevented me from immediately grabbing onto it but honestly, not only glad I heard this - it's kind of mind-expanding and is a new keeper. I steer heavily towards the more complex musical numbers and not so much to the overtly vocal/guitar ones, but it's a good ratio. This is pretty outstanding and quite the new discovery for me - have already enjoyed as background or digested in headphones. 8/10 4 stars
Wild Brazilian album. Many different influences come together to make a very unique experience of a Latin infused psychedelic folk rock sound.
I really enjoyed this collection from artists who got together and decided to try a lot of styles to see what Brazilian popular music in the 70s could be. The length allows for a lot of this freedom, and whenever there was something that wasn't my favorite, there was something immediately following that was my favorite.
This was an album that was easy to listen to. I enjoyed the groove.
Enjoyable instrumentation and songwriting. The second half is particularly enjoyable.
great album. one of my favorite world artists
Very cool album. Latin jazzy-y, but also feels like a Brazilian Nick Drake at times, even veering into sounds that reminded me of mainstream rock pop groups like the Beach Boys. Never heard of this artist but really dig the style. This was great music to play while building Ikea furniture. Favorite tracks: Tudo o Que Voce, O Trem Azul, Dos Cruces, San Vicente. Album art: Two boys sitting on the ground, one happy one very upset. Not sure what to make of it but it's pretty good. 4/5
Note to self: listen to more Brazilian music! I had not heard this before and I was pleasantly surprised. A relaxing and soothing listen, though a little long, had me longing to listen to other Brazilian artists as well.
Really enjoyed this, lots of excellent grooves.
Starts super strong on the first track! This whole thing sounds fantastic on headphones too. However, over the course of its long, double-album duration, I end up liking about 1/2 of the tracks. I am partial towards the more upbeat and percussion heavy numbers from the first half of the album. Love the arrangements and creative structures. Would be 5 stars if they would've pared it down to a single album.
Unique pop music from Brasil! It's lush with instrumentation, rhythmically groovy, sensationally beautiful vocals. Even during the slower parts, the warm acoustic strumming accompanies Portuguese lyrics that float around the air. Occasionally taking elements of psychedelic music, we hear phased guitars add another layer to the already vast landscape of music being produced here. Excellence.
I wasn’t expecting that. I really liked it. Guess I have a thing for Brazilian music.
Mint album, can't tell a word they're saying but still manages to tap into a universal spirit. Cluba de esquina no. 2 is a track of pure human yearning and trem de doido sounds like crazy horse. Mmm
Very beautiful music, both instrumentals and vocals. It's quite a long album with a lot of tracks, yet all the tracks differ and you don't get bored. Very impressed with this. Not something I would ever listen to if it wasn't for this site, so im very thankful.
Different to the other brazillian albums i heard before.
Very cinematic strings. The songs have the feel of 60s/70s American folk songs while having the unique melodies of bossa nova and other Brazilian genres. The Beatles influence, specifically Paul McCartney, can be heard throughout the album. One of the only things that takes away from it is that I can’t understand the lyrics. The instruments are really interesting.
Different language, so there isn't any context for me, unfortunately. Very Nando's, Portuguese vibes.
Nuvem Cigana got that lovely flute lmao reminds me of fake names on badana. Tonal shift between 6 and 7 I knew when we were on a new section. Wish I understood portuguese, but alas. Overall was a nice album with tons of influences it it from bossa nova/ samba music to some interesting rock guitars
Nice easy listening
Enjoyed it, interesting shift in styles throughout. Some abrupt song endings which seemed unintentional
Great record. 90% sure Jim James was listening to this one at some point
Really nice album.
Enjoyable
An impressive spread of genres ranging from blues to psychedelic to folk, without ever really feeling unfocused. Loses me a little during the middle, but gains my attention back by the end. Favorite tracks: "Trem De Doido", "Lilia", "Un Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo"
This is what finding new albums should be like, great stuff
4/5 Really nice, relaxed even though I don’t understand the spoken language
A hybrid style that combined elements of sophisticated ballads, samba and jazz. And a really depressing albumcover. (7/10) Favourite Tracks: Me Deixe Em Paz
Amazing
I liked this way more than I thought I would. Great grooves and the guy can really play.
Awesome! So funky and jazzy and smooth, and not something I'd normally listen to, but glad I've discovered
Very peaceful
Spaanse muziek.
A mix of styles, tempos and vibes, but still a cohesive piece. No idea about the lyrical content, but each song still manages to communicate a feeling, making it an engaging and enjoyable listen. 3.5/5.
Fantastic album, it deserves quiet attentive listening (not as simple background music). Ideal for winter (or is it summer?) afternoons at home (or on the beach). Milton's and Lo Borges seem to complement and feed off each other. Lo Borges' guitar work is great! Classical early 70's Brazil.
This album starts *so good*, and I am truly a sucker for Portuguese singing. This should have been an easy 5 stars for me! But the second half of this album drags SO HARD. It comes to a creeping, drudging close.
Not something I imagined myself enjoying as much as I did. Very chill and relaxing listen.
Brazillian prog rock fusion hits right
Very chill
Groovy
Nice spanish music album. I thoroughtly enjoyed multiple melodies on this record.
some interesting latin music. There were some slow points, and fluff, but a lot of quality 70s Brazilian jams
Liked it. Couldn’t understand it, but I liked it. Probably more than the average joe.
Playa
loved this album
Really enjoyed this album, good music to relax to.
muy setentero
I would listen to this again! I really enjoyed the variety and the beats.
try to run, try to hide RF: Classic/10
This is so great. It relaxed the fuck out of me.
I enjoyed listening to this album a lot. It made me feel like everything is going To be ok. Kind of like a hug, but in Portuguese. Pairs well with peri peri chicken tenders and spicy rice
Nice and relaxing
I’m glad this was on the list. The world needs more people muttering the following all day long: bum bum bum bum ba da bum bum bum bum bum bum ba da bum bum bum bum bum bum ba da bum bum bum bum bum bum ba da bum bum
No idea what this is. One of the few international albums I’ve come across that are always interesting because they’re at least something unique. Let’s check this out. This is interesting. Like a psychedelic classic rock sound at times, but also folky at times. I guess this is Brazilian music that seems inspired by both Brazilian music and 60s era popular classic rock. To me, that’s the vibe I get. Really interesting. This is all really fun as a whole. There’s a fun sound and enough variety to be invested. Biggest issue is the length. It doesn’t drag at all through the first half or so, but after a while it feels like it should be coming to a close and you have a few songs left. This is tough. Feels like it earns a good rating, but felt too long. I think it’s a solid 3.
A pleasant listen
Pretty cool. Plenty of variation of sound between the tracks, which is almost always a good thing. Bands showcasing a variety of songs and genres is equally important to, if not more important than, musical consistency. As long as the quality remains high. On Clube Da Esquina, aside from a couple of goofy performances where the players aren't even trying (Saídas E Banderias Nᵒ 1, Os Povos) or trying too hard (like the vocalist in Ao Que Vai Nascer – bad, and not helped by one of the least catchy melodies known to man). San Vicente / Estrelas / Clube Da Esquina, all sound very similar, using essentially the same textures and (in the former and latter) tempos. Otherwise, though, standardly good music that I'm not familiar with at all but am glad I crossed its path. Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser is a great way to launch off the album. With bright, energetic instrumental delivery, a pretty strong vocal and melody, and some of the record's strongest production, you can't really go wrong. Dos Cruces goes all over the place musically – almost like a prog track, if such a thing is even possible in this genre. The song's final section, with crazed group vocals and a weird sort of electronic kazoo noise in the right ear, checks all the right boxes. Except the fade-out, which detracts from its value. Still great, though. Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo is also pretty crazed and high-energy, acting as a continuation of the (superior) opening number. Shoutout to Pelo Amor De Deus with its psychedelic underwater sounds that must've been pretty difficult to achieve back in the early 70s. For most of the album I didn't consider the lead vocalist's vocal quality worth commenting on, but it's pretty solid in Trem De Doido. That song also contains some solid basswork. 3/5 Key tracks: Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser, Dos Cruces, Um Gosto De Sol, Trem De Doido
After checking the genre and reading a few reviews, I was really interested in the album. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. What I heard from the album was okay. It didn't really blow me away. 3/5
v good vibe, fun, will listen again on a drive in the sun I think
Pleasant nice feel, will except wiki saying it's important in history of Brazilian music. It was nice on a very sunny day today. 3 Star
A lovely double album of Brazilian beats. I did drift a little in and out during my listen, but there are some strong tracks here.
A beautiful listen. I really enjoyed the chill, smooth vibe. 3.3/5.
It had a really lovely vibe to it throughout, and the instrumentation and production feels very high class. In general, it all felt a little too easy listening to score really highly, and that was particularly the case on the Nascimento sung songs - Jorge's felt like they had a touch more emotional heft to them. As ever, a Brazilian album is a useful benchmark for where my Portuguese learning is at. It remains bad.
This was a pretty ok album, not my favorite but not bad by any means
All over the place but kinda fun
Pretty fun listen. I'm not too familiar with Brazilian music, but this had some bangers. Despite the language barrier the vocalist still sounds great on these tracks. Nothing really blows me away, but its a fun album. Dancey and upbeat at times, and slow and beautiful at others.
Lovely little album
I'm a little surprised that this album isn't rated a bit higher. Personally, I think it's quite pleasant, if a bit bizzare at times. I would have thought that this is the sort of stuff that most would like.
Interesting musical fusion. I liked it but didn't love it.
Interesting
Alright, didn't blow me away but had so highlights that drew me in. I like the midpoint of this album more, I think the beat feels better and I can vibe with this pretty well. It doesn't blow me out of the water, but the Latin musical elements adds a nice sense of self to the album with does interest me more. Fav Track: Pelo Amor De Deus
This is one of those ones that I just get lost in on the listen. No fault of the music I just drift away. It's a pleasant listen. Would be even better in smaller bites.
I liked this, but probably wouldn't come back to it.
The first half I like a lot, the second half was ok.
Overall I did enjoy this album, but I did find it dragged a bit. There were moments when it was really great, but lots of bits where I was checking how much longer was left. Probably not going to re-listen, but enjoyed the experience.
Beautiful playing, atmospheric in parts. The standout track o trem azul sticks in the mind. All in all a rewarding listen
I enjoyed this a lot despite not understanding the language, guess that the power of music.
Some strange production on here. To be honest I don't really know what to make of this.
This is pleasant, lovely, and overlong. It's probably the language difference, but this felt like variations on the same handful of songs to me. The Beatles influence is pronounced, as the 1,001 book notes. (I noticed it most in "Um Gosto De Sol.") I saved a couple tracks to a playlist, but that's likely the end of it.
interesting how a lot of brazlian music from that era has a very distinctive sound
Loved it! Extremely well put together and a high 3 maybe 4 but was missing a hit song that just captivated me.
In terms of atmosphere, the album transports you to Brazil in the 1970s — slightly intricate music, light in content. But why people used to love double albums so much, I just don't understand...
Favorite Track: O Trem Azul
Cool album, 3.5
This was pretty good. I didn’t really know what to expect but this was generally enjoyable
Hard one to rate. It was OK and nothing objectionable about it. But nothing really stuck with me. Reminds me of a soundtrack to some film in an exotic location.
7/10 - Has some really happy vibes and feel good songs (i don't speak Portuguese so idk if they are happy) Fav Tracks: O Trem Azul, Cravo E Canela, Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ❌
This is definitely not my cup of tea, but you know what? It’s not Brian Eno or Neil Young (who the makers of this list seem to have a fetish about) so plus one for that.
Meh
I vibed with it. Probably liked 3/4 of it.
Interesting record for what it actually is - a hodgepodge of multiple genre experiments often in the same song. Jazz, folk, samba, etc fusing to form what we know call tropicalia. Also, Milton’s vocals resemble Sting (formerly a curmudgeon member of the Police, now just a curmudgeon who puts out insanely boring shit under his own name). The vocal similarities threw me off as my dislike for Sting intensified after it came out that his ego was bigger than the highly competent bandmates in the Police and that he continues to dwell in his own ego more than 30 years later. But I digress. Milton’s vocals aside the record would have been an outlier in 1972 with its amalgam of genres and psychedelic leanings beautifully sung. Obviously, there is no way I can opine on the lyrics not having a clue about what is actually being sung and only knowing in passing Portuguese swear words none of which appear on this record. So, rather than try to identify and then write out my favorites, which include Um Gusto del Sol, Paisagem Da Jenella, Saidas E Bandeiras No 1 and Nada Sara Como Antes, I would close with this is a chill vibe record with beautiful playing incorporating western elements into Spanish/Portuguese music creating something interesting and novel. It’s a late Sunday afternoon record for listening with a drink in your hand and the sun about to set. Forget the Sting reference and enjoy yourself. 3.5/5
Interesting listen. Very lush instrumentals and relaxing vocals
First few were quite groovy. Really liked Tudo O Que Voce Podia Ser, some good drums and guitar riffs. The slower ones still good but not extraordinary.
Buja
Very enjoyable jazzy Brazil rock pop album
Not too bad an album
Didn’t hate this. A good, if a little uneventful accompaniment to my drive home. Was on the verge of becoming background music but didn’t quite go there, and for the most part it was enjoyable. Not going to change any worlds though, and probably wouldn’t revisit it.
Since I do not speak Portuguese, I did not understand the lyrics. The music was pleasant. I just wished that some of the tracks went on a little longer to develop a little more.
It's good music, but not something I'd normally listen to. I doubt I'll come back to it. It's pretty good background music. 3.5
It’s alright, didn’t really speak to me. I’m not familiar with this style of music so I’m not sure how essential this record is within the genre. I didn’t find anything special inside this album, but it’s not bad.
Fiesta de bostezos.
I am very happy, that this album is here on this list. Not because I knew and liked it. Not because it is such a great album. Not because I love the music. No, simply because it is not the same old story with this list, so many mediocre US/UK-albums. The music:
it's nice to hear something in a different language. overall nice listen, but nothing super remarkable.
Not sure what he was singing, but he sang it very well.
This album is doing is what that Santana album THOUGHT it was doing. Sorry Carlos, the Brazilians win this round of "latin music with weird mixed production that makes my brain somehow still enjoy itself." I am once again wishing I could grant half stars so I could give this a proper 3.5
3.5
Ran a little long, but I enjoyed it.
Too many tracks ! Like it though
Some pleasant vibes, and one of my more enjoyable foreign language albums I've had so far.
sunny, groovy, background vibes for doing things enthusiastically
chill, brazil,
Geen meesterwerk, wel veel leuke momenten
funky 3.5
3,5 leuk maar ook niets crazy
Not bad, a big soporific.
Clube da Esquina is one of those albums that has a lot going for it (good vocals, solid compositions, some unique ideas peppered in), but unfortunately doesn't know when to stop. I remember being about 10 tracks deep and thinking "oh, this one is definitely going to be a four." Less than 15 minutes later, I couldn't wait for it to be over. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad album – it's just not quite good enough to warrant its 64-minute runtime. Highlights: Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser, O Trem Azul, Dos Cruces, Um Girassol da Cor do Seu Cabelo, Me Deixa Em Paz, Um Gosto de Sol, Nada Será como Antes
These are the types of albums I love to hear on this forum. I would have never looked for this one and, having no concept, would have overlooked if given it. However, if I would have heard this in a restaurant I would have stopped eating to listen. Dos Cruces, man, his voice with just a guitar, and then the build up 3:30 in. Some of this felt like a James Bond film, like Clive da Esquina No2 or Saidas E Bandeiras No1. A few of them like Nuvem Cigana, were a little too dated for my personal listening tastes. But overall I could come back to this album again. I just wish that I spot Portuguese.
Very smooth listening
Lovely and sort of genre bending. A tiny bit forced. Which is not what you want from your Brazilian music. Poppy in places and very much of its time. Makes me wish for more Latin music on he list.
Modern songs in a brazilian way, very interesting finding.
There were some really interesting songs on this album, interspersed with some that didn't interest me so much. That's life, I guess.
It's good, a little all over the place, but it's a compilation so that's to be expected. Not what I would expect from a Brazilian album from the 1970s, but a really enjoyable listen.
Good but bland
Good listen but probably wouldn’t come back to listen to any songs again besides a couple
joyful, but I can’t recall anything after listening
For 40 minutes or so, I loved this. About that time, I found my mind wandering. In all likelihood, this has more to do with my attention span than the quality of the music. I will go back and listen to the second half of the album to test this theory.
Perfectly pleasant listening experience if maybe a bit long.
Very enjoyable, had never come across this before. Mid 3s.
Surprisingly interesting, if a little long, would listen again.
i feel medium about this album.
Pleasant acoustic album. Some nice Brazilian flourishes. Unfortunately I don’t speak Portuguese, sadly, I feel these songs need that skill set. Without following the lyrics this doesn’t cross over in the way Jorge Ben or Gal Costa does.
Interesting stuff. Not for me, respect it highly though.
had some definite highlights but not my kind of thing overall, a bit too art poppy
Wish I knew what they were singing about
Very cute, didnt quite finish
Refreshing and different. Easy listening.
This is very pretty. I don't have the cultural touchstones that really let it speak to me, and don't understand the lyrics, but it's a pleasant listen. Nice 70's production, I like the levels of all the different parts, everything is easy to pick out, jazzy. Reads a tiny bit elevator music in parts, just a little dated. Can't really pick out any songs as more memorable than the others. 3 stars, would be open to listening to in the right setting.
Real pretty, for way too long. Greatly impressed by the recording quality, would never have guessed it was recorded in 72.
I appreciated the instrumentation and vocals on this record, but between the length and the genre, I can't give it more than three stars. 6/10
Interesting. Really soulful music, and beautiful at times. I found it super hard to get into though.
You know those random stores you pop into when on holiday and wonder how they stay in business. It reminds of the music those stores play. Not bad, but easily forgettable.
I enjoy!
Nice tunes and nice singing. Not really made for me though. I appreciate world music, but I don't really want to listen to it more than once.
It's not bad, I really liked the first song but the rest de álbum is yest nice enough music to have on the background.
Good vibes and strings Listening with headphones can be a bit off putting with the vocals and instruments choosing to be at different sides but it does create an interesting immersive experience A very fun joyous album in its sound
Would listen again, enjoyable
Smooth and cool. But won’t be overly memorable to me in the long term I don’t think. The language sound so nice although I did wonder what the lyric meant it was kind of nice just to enjoy it sonically without knowing too.
This was mildly interesting, quite pretty, and entirely forgettable.
Very good album although I didnt understand most, the music is fluid and more relaxing than most american music. Excelent for chilling and just background peace
cool but not for me
Well done music, but not really my style.
Surprisingly interesting. Does not really have a genre, though lyrics are Spanish.
This album was a bit of a surprise. I didn't know what to expect going in, but ended up enjoying quite a few of the songs. There was a rock sound to some of it that I liked a lot. Unfortunately, the album length (64+ minutes) was a bit too much for me. It was hard to keep my attention on the album the longer it went, especially since I couldn't understand the vocals (not the album's fault, so just saying). I would say that I liked a few songs, didn't like some others, and am not sure about the rest-- either I didn't absorb them, or they didn't stick with me. There wasn't anything that I really found bad. Putting it all together, I've got this one as solidly OK. Overall: 2.7/5
This is #day541 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this turned out to be better than I expected. Actually, pretty interesting stuff: warm, melodic, and all over the place stylistically. Very long, though. Loving that album cover. Given the versatility of moods and music, let it be a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day542.
Whoa the Brazilians are back Definitely not as crazy about this one as Africa Brasil but it’s a good sounding album. This is one where I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy it more if I understood Portuguese, definitely more lyrical sounding and less dance vibes. Still can’t knock it too much for that, it’s a fun one. Definitely want to listen to more Brazilian stuff, if we got another one tomorrow I would have 0 complaints
I would totally love this album, it sounds good, I just can’t truly vibe with it because I don’t understand what the song is about or what is being said. I can understand that a song is sad, but I don’t understand why it’s sad. That’s why this album is just fine.
avtobusshi daydreamingistvis gaaswora
-the one and only Brazilian classic!! waow!! i can definitely understand why this album is as popular as it is, i think it’s very easy to enjoy -still not my absolute favorite, not even to come out of Brazil, mainly just cuz it feels a little bit samey. some really pretty songs on here tho! rip Lo Borges -Favorites: Tudo O Que Você Podia Ser, Nuvem Cigana, Paisagem Da Janela
- This was a pleasant listen. Instrumentation was atmospheric and/or textural most of the time. - A blend of musical styles on here, so it's hard to pin down, but it was interesting and felt fresh, especially for 1972! - It's different than what I'm used to listening to, but I liked the musicality in the chord choices and the overall lack of pretension. It felt on the uplifting and hopeful side most of the time. - The singing was nice - the singer's voice was clear and melodic. I wouldn't say the tone of his voice was incredibly memorable, and I didn't understand the lyrics, but to me, the emotions his voice evoked were sentimental, sweet, and frustrated (in the more strained/shouty higher registers, mainly). The vocals were a little too loud and in front - I wanted the mix to be a little more balanced. - The album could have used a bit of editing in terms of there being too many songs - it definitely felt too long and more than I wanted to listen to in one sitting. Also, the songs were pretty busy, so even the short ones felt on the long side.
Couldn’t really hear any english
I really love the vocals on this one. Very pretty. I don't speak the language, but these songs feel very meaningful. This album was a very refreshing listen. My only issue was that I did have to break this listen into two chunks as it drug on just a tad too long. It's just simple, pretty music that I enjoyed a decent amount. Definitely nice to get a fairly good Brazilian album off the heels of one I didn't really like the day prior.
Its alright. Not a genre I'll probably return too, but it was a relaxing listen.
Ok, fair, this feels rich. It's not quite for me, but I could be somewhere where it's being played
Enjoyable little album, no idea what they were saying tho
Cool, rockier than I expected
Milton Nascimento was tipped to play upfront for Brazil in the 1973 World Cup. The year before he was discovered singing on the training pitch by non other than Len Houmous. The ball boy that day? Fat Ronaldo! As they say, the rest is history. 3.0 11/21 Club Da Eaquina no 2
Starts off strong then loses some momentum for me.
3.6/5 nice vibe change good stuff
This is another one of those albums that not only have I never heard of, but would have never listened to if it wasn't for this journey. It wasn't incredible, but it did have an array of instruments, singing styles, beats, and genres. Favorite Track: "Trem De Doido".
Very interesting, clearly Brazilian but a sort of jazzier, psychedelic take on other stuff I've heard. Some cool bits here and there but it was slightly too much of a genre/language leap for me to really grab on to anything. Enjoyed it and wouldn't mind hearing more but not an instant connection.
Not the most inspiring. Some of these tracks are ok, but I'm not catching the through-line. It appears to mostly be singing with a bit of strumming on the guitar? Another one of those pulled up by context rather than intrinsic quality (for me). Ultimately a 3.
Decent for something from 1972, although I was tired of it by the end. 2.8
Real pleasant, well produced. It must be a convergent evolution sort of thing because everything sounds familiar, despite the various brazilian subgenres that come together to make it being literally and very foreign to me.
My album long. My spanish portuguese.
Bright and sort of novel but it was too long. The tunes were good and the deliver excellent. A definite feel of the time it was recorded. Probably worthy of being in the list for awareness.
Perfectly pleasant, but nothing really stood out to me
Nice and chill- hard to get into or revisit when it’s all in Portuguese
You could get lost in this quite easily, it had a lot going for it. I enjoyed it.
Honestly,, I was kind of dreading listening to this, so it was all the more surprising to actually enjoy it. It was really pleasant background music. I wish I understood the lyrics.
Album #1,002 Spanish language lyrics with some interesting sounds and also some boring stuff. It was OK.
6.5/10
A good album, enjoyable mix of high and bobbing songs with just the right amount of low and slow. I really enjoyed it
A lot of this plays only in my right headphone which is kind of strange. Not sure if this was done intentionally or if just a glitch. Overall it's nice and chill listening. Wouldn't listen again.
Pretty good, the first half I enjoyed especially but it started to get old towards the end.
This is the kind of thing I like this list for. I would have never heard of this otherwise, but it's a mix I'd never heard before. I can feel some jazz, bossa nova, rock, and romance in there. Lyrically, well, I don't know Portuguese. It was musically interesting, but not enough to overcome the language barrier. At the end of the day, these aren't just compositions or pieces, they're songs, and I know I'm not getting the complete experience.
Sigh. It was fine.
A lot better than anticipated, it has a Brazilian flavor but recorded through the lens of folk, baroque pop and even elements of psychedelic music. It’s certainly a vibe and might go down well in the summer evenings but it didn’t grab me enough to want to return to it.
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo Pleasant music. No idea what they are singing about, but flavorful all the same. Not as good as Jorge Ben's Africa Brasil.
Mid.
Really good background music that failed to really grab the attention.
The music of my people. First time hearing this album. It was an easy listen. 3/5
Little mid at points but refreshing - Trem De Doido is a banger
Fun background music
While my browsing of rateyourmusic.com has made me exceedingly aware of this album, I can still count this as one of too few albums on this list I know too little about.
En portugues molt be, so diferent.
Meh. This didn’t feel like an essential album to me. Nice enough. 3 stars.
Meh. 3 *
Good vocals and overall sound, but not my favorite
I don't know what they were singing about lol, but I loved all the arrangements/the musical compositions themselves. Interesting choices with the chord progressions and beautiful acoustic guitars, piano, and strings. The range of both voices was also impressive.
Cool 😎
The perfect album for when you bring a girl over to your house for the first time to cook for her.
#772. Fun enough, east to listen to poppy kind of music. 3/5: not bad
Yeah, this is pretty good. I hope they aren't singing about naughty things...
pretty interesting throughout
not for meee
Soft Tejano ish music
A really interesting and varied listen, folk/blues/prog/psychedelia and the occasional tough groove. A lot of the string arrangements sound like Sgt Pepper. Don’t feel a great urge to come back to it but an enjoyable ride all the same.
im sure this is great. too bad I can't appreciate it to its true worth
Atmospheric, good for the background kinda music
As expected, a Brazilian album is full of beguiling rhythms and the irresistible sound of Portuguese. Try as I might, it kept fading into the background for me though. It’s great for swingy background music.
*I never would have listened to this if I wasn't doing this project *It was cool to hear Brazilian music, but nothing blew me away....solid musicianship though
———————————— My non-musician scoring system. I’m gonna give it a 3 because I don’t think 2 is fair, but I didn’t listen to most of it. Maybe on vacation in Brazil in the 70s I could. ———————- 5 - Love it. Would play anytime, buy, see live… 4 - Good music. 3 - Average playlist. Depends on time and setting. 2 - I can’t listen to entire songs…skipped ahead on all of them 1 - No.
Fun and chill, once more in a language I don’t speak but the vibes were there and varied enough that the entire hour of this album didn’t melt together in some sort of amorphous blob. So there’s that ! :)
It's okay.
Great, expansive yet meandering music from Clube da Esquina / Milton Nascimento / Lô Borges that runs a bit long these days. Maybe it works better as background music, an atmosphere to sink into, when I'm focused elsewhere...it's filled with charms even if the Portuguese lyrics are a barrier to understanding for me.
Interesting sound. Just not super for me.
