Reviews (page 3 of 8)
I mean this is certainly not a great record. First three songs, same vocal/rapping pacing line, but first is nu- metal vibe, second is country vibe and third is funk vibe. I mean it’s just fun and catchy and not to be taking seriously. But then it’s a lot of eye rolling with all the oh a fuck so many bitches, so unoriginal.
I'm not much of a Kid Rock fan, admittedly. His music is about what you expect it to be: sex, drugs, alcohol, and a nice big dose of misogyny. That being said, I'm not going to let that affect how I rate this album from anything over than a lyrical standpoint. The vocals really aren't bad at all, and some of the songs are admittedly kind of catchy. At minimum, a majority have great beats. Bawitdaba in particular lives in my head rent free most days. I still would not describe the majority of the album as super remarkable. It's a bit too long for me, and I did feel that there was a lot of the same vibes from track to track. I think this is somewhere dead in the middle between a 2 or 3, but I'll choose to round up today. This is lyrically lacking, yes, but it's fairly enjoyable. The guitar absolutely rocks all around.
I've heard everyone talk nasty about Kid Rock. And while he's not to my taste, and his politics are awful, I think he's better than Beastie Boys. 3/5
I came into this wanting to shit on it. But gosh darn it there is something I like. Maybe nostalgia and sad I can sing along with more than I should admit. You can criticize kid rock for all the sampling and cheesy lyrics but then don’t you have to do the same for beastie boys? I also like the guitarist on this. Nothing spectacular but he has some melodic riffs that fit the songs nicely. Also some respect to Bob for producing this and playing many of the instruments (drums and rhythm guitar I believe?).
I'm sure the lyrics are awful. I'm sure Kid Rock is a poser by pretty much everyone's subjective definition. I'm sure this is pretty basic stuff, and musically speaking it's not remotely impressive. All that said: I was 13 when this album came out, so I was prepared to spin this up and give it a 4. "Bawitdaba" was mind-blowing when I was a teen, and if I'm being honest it still slaps. The rest of the album really let me down, though. The rock stuff holds up OK, but the rapping is largely awful (Eminem he is not), and the country stuff was mediocre. I guess I didn't actually listen to much Kid Rock when I was younger, I just got a few jams off Napster. I'll never listen to this album again as it's not a great album, but I didn't hate it. 3.0
Good, but not all time good.
I really wanted to hate this album for personal opinion reasons, but I actually enjoyed quite a bit of the early music. "Cowboy" being the classic. Any song where Kid Rock was just singing and coasting on confident vibes with no real story was a great time. I enjoyed the vibe of the those songs enough to potentially call this a 4/5 album. However, anywhere Kid Rock tried to tell a story, his sociopathic lack of empathy bled through and it's hard to listen to the music with anything but contempt for him and his opinions. This was especially true listening to "Black Chick, White Guy" at the end of the album, which left me nothing but angry listening to such a "woe is me, I'm always the victim" song. Overall 3/5 because I really did enjoy multiple of the songs here, but a small handful of them are bad enough to regress society as a whole.
It's an album that really stunned me because it combines rock and hip-hop. Which made me keep listening to it. It was both strange and surprising, in my opinion. I think there must be something that keeps me thinking.
Starts with two bangers. Then becomes more and more chore. Didn’t listen to the end.
I have several thoughts: 1. absolutely awful terrible embarassing and also way too long but. the lyrics did make me laugh multiple times 2. one thing cannot be denied about the usa, they are great at creating innovative torture methods 3. why is eminem here
I'll start by saying I'm here to rate the music NOT the person. If that was the case then the majority of albums on this list would get 1 star by default I wasn't aware of Kid Rock's music. I only knew 1 song (All Summer Long) and I knew he supported Trump and that was it. What a surprise I was in for when I heard some of them lyrics!! 1 star and that's being generous This was a man in his late 20's, which was quite frankly embarrassing. He thought he was so cool and tough. No you're a mess, grow up Lyrics aside though - these songs were catchy as fuck. Instrumentally this album would have got a 5, I loved the guitars! It was not what I expected at all based off the 1 song I knew. It's a shame he had such awful lyrics because this album was actually very very enjoyable 3 ⭐️
A bit of a joke but done so well
I didnt hate it as much as I thought I would. While the subject matter is low brow and a little one note, there is a lot of energy in the way Kid Rock constructs his songs. I could see this being a representative album to a lot of people who felt under represented. Overall- not too bad. 2.5 to 3 / 5
This album is the reason I joined 1001, to extend my listening to albums I steered clear of due to assumptions I'd hate it! I actually really liked a lot of these tracks. Old mates a Trump supporter so I'm not going to pay to see him but enjoyed the listen.
A lot of this hasn’t aged well, but the songs that hit hard still do.
Wife used to love this guy until he went orange, so I’ve seen him live a few times and gotta admit it was a fun live show. Album is not bad if you separate him from it
The rock/rap fusion works, but produces a certain amount of cringe. The one kinda gospel song was actually pretty good. Definitely too long.
5/10
actually pretty good to listen to and quite lit but also very incel core
Ten album bym jak tanie piwo. Nic specjalnego, ale robi swoją robotę. Nie udaje że jest czymś innym, bardziej wyrafinowanym i ambitnym. Dociera do mas, rozluźnia i leci dalej. 6/10 nie dla koneserów.
This guy wins the award for shittest stage name and person most proud of their stage name, all in one. He won't shut up about it! I actually laughed out loud when I got this one today. 'Bawitdaba' is not a song I would list on the Required Listening Before Death - but that doesn't mean I haven't listened to it a bunch anyway! This album is so stupid, but so fun to listen to when you aren't taking it seriously. I feel like some 90s protagonist, the cool rebel kid that don't take no shit B) Also I walked past a baroque pan flute busker while this was playing in my headphones, which has to be the weirdest mashup ever encountered
OK. 3/5
Sonically, this is not bad at all. Yeah, the crass lyrics, and vulgar tone may detract many but it was more or less what I expected from Kid Rock. Going back to the lyrics, it was definitely the worst part of the album, like sometimes it was funny and ironic, and other times you just cringe and wished you never heard what you just heard. Black Chick, White Guy being a prime example. I can not dog on the production though, that was the best thing about the album bar none. The guitars hit, the redneck instruments hit, and even the samples hit. When combine all those together I'd say you get a average to decent album. Not bad (for the most part). Top 3: Bawitdaba. Devil Without A Cause, and Cowboy Worst: Black Chick, White Guy (absolute dogwater). There's a few more I could name but those were more mid than bad. 2.50-2.75/5 2.50-2.75/5
If Limp Bizkit = Walmart, then Kid Rock = Dollar General. I am not going lie and say that I didn't enjoy it, but there were some flaws with the album. Corny lyrics and dragging songs on for WAY too long.
I had more fun listening this than I expected to but any tracks that incorporated any sort of "old school beat" like Welcome 2 The Party were wack as fuck. It's more like a 2.5 and I think the Limp Bizkit album on the list is actually better than this.
I won't lie that I didn't enjoy this album when it came out. Despite owning the album, I don't know that I've ever listened to all of the album. I think Kid Rock is the worm that inhabits RFK's brain, but this album isn't too bad. Some of the songs are stupid, but there's some gold.
Felt like a thirteen year old trying to be cool but the music was alright
Separating the art from the artist: 3 stars
it was cringe redneck music by a cringe redneck back then and it's still cringe redneck music but by an even more cringe redneck today. but it partially fun if you don't listen to the lyrics.
I mean, it’s kind of fun. It’s mainly bad but there are some fun tracks in here. It doesn’t really sound like anything else, it’s his own white trash nu metal funk hip hop that shouldn’t work but sort of does. Batwidaba is the obvious standout, but there’s a lot of fluff
I went in ready for this album to be dog shit and unexpectedly I was groovin’ to some songs. Also some awful stuff on here. Shocked to hear Eminem, didn’t know he was on there. This album SCREAMS 90s and I guess there are parts of me I didn’t realize were nostalgic for that.
Fine, I guess. Funny to hear the remnants of his hip hop in there, and I get why it was so big at the time. Still don’t think I’m gonna be a fan of his work though
I like Kid Rock, I like his voice and style, but I wasn’t crazy about this album.
Better than I expected, but also there was a lot I didn’t care for.
I guess I had no idea of Kid Rocks Genre.. not horrible
Not bad, but kinda a low 3?
It wasn't bad. I didn't particularly enjoy it, but it was more listenable and had a greater range than I thought it might.
never a favourite. seems to like to hold onto a riff or pattern over a few songs. is it classic rock or rap or ,????
So like first half of the album passed and I was thinking this was gonna get a 4 but then there were just a few too many tracks that just made me cringe and then of course the 12 minute song at the end because why not.
Went in with low expectations but it was better than I expected, reminded me of RATM a bit. Not bad as a one off but probably won’t listen again
I mean this is just fierce. So much force and energy from the go 🤟🏻 Probably bias as it accompanied my workout and fit very well. A little repetitive in beat, themes and groove but at least repetitively forceful. It kinda feels like the fun guy who bursts into the party with all the drugs and booze and some good chat. But then over time kinda get the picture and can begin to get a bit too much and trying. Still a guy to party with though. Probably. Oh Jesus. And then ‘Only God Knows Why’ with the auto tune. Tragic. (The acoustic guitar has come out at the end of the party). Good enough album. Pretty repetitive
Rap mit Rock/Metal Einflüssen. Dafür, dass es nicht meine Musikrichtung ist, lässt es sich gut hören. Highlight: Ony god knows why 3/5
You couldn’t have paid me money in 1998 to listen to this, and I just did it for free and enjoyed much of it. 😂 Twenty five plus years later, I can appreciate that there is craftsmanship here and that he’s bringing together genres in ways that have since become standard. Plus, some of the songs are just good!
I seem to have some kind of soft spot on Rap-Rock? Nothing new or groundbreaking but not that bad like the global rating indicates. Sure too long. best known: "Only God Knows Why", "Bawitdaba", "Cowboy" 2,5
Fun!
Not mad. Ana that one song was on all my warm up tapes in JuCo lol
This was definitely not as bad as I was expecting. The lyrics are pretty ridiculous for sure but other than that I mostly enjoyed it.
Pretty good hooks and fun guitar riffs. Trash lyrics and verses. Still pretty nostalgic
Kid Rock is not someone I would gratefully listen to but here it goes. It is not the worst thing I've listened to, I do enjoy the melodies and the rap/rock/country fusion. Some good melodies and guitar riffs there. However, the lyrics are, again, not something I would happy listen to, but he had a rappee persona and he just behaved as one. I can't believe he namedropped Matchbox 20 in one of the songs. It was fun to see some names like Eminem making part of it as well. I can see where the hate is coming from, but honestly, it is an ok album, I can see why it is groundbreaking, but I dont think I will return to it that soon
too long, but i generally like it
first song a little hardcore, then the next few songs had groovier beats, back to hardcore at song Fist of Rage, Only God Knows Why has terrible autotune and is kind of country, Fuck Off was more cool and hardcore but had a really long phone call skit thing at the end, then a nasty 12min rap at the end that is basically two songs
A lot of the reviews didn't listen to the album. I get he's playing a character and playing for an audience. Seems like a lot of people on here don't. This one is interesting. I like the more heavy cuts, but the country/southern influenced ones work. I get why its on the list- the southern hip hop thing works and this is probably the first time something like that really was made commercially successful. There's actually good musicianship on a lot of these tracks. I wouldn't say its a great album, but some songs are cool, majnly the heavier ones. Others kind of suck, especially the heavily autotuned Only God Knows Why. It's not a classic, but it deserves to be on the list. I wouldn't go through the album again but would revisit certain songs in the right context. 3.5, I round down 1=Crap that shouldn't be here 2=I didn't like it but get why it's here 3=I thought it was ok or even like it, get why it's here, but won't revisit 4=I like it, will revisit 5=This is some of the best music I've ever heard and will continue listening to it
Guilty pleasure. actually terrible. Kid rock says he doesn't role vo's on one song then the very next song he's talking about riding on them with 100 spokes. You clearly see he was here for the grift and by what he's become is proof. But damm I liked this shit when I was 12, and still now. Only kid rock album I will like though.
Alright alright yes Kid Rock is a piece of shit culture vulture who makes bad music nowadays, and I’m not going to begrudge you for giving this album one star because of that, but I’m sorry - looking at this album objectively - it’s fun! It’s big, stupid, bravado fun! The beats are catchy, the production is crisp, the hooks are there, and while his “flow” isn’t good, it’s musically pleasing and easy to listen to. I absolutely see why this was a hit. There’s probably, at least 50 albums, maybe 100, I’ve had a harder time getting through for this project than this one. It gets a little too long in the tooth like a lot of late-90s CD albums did, but hell, I more than enjoyed myself listening to this. I’m as surprised as you are. Giving this a mild “okay.”
Oh joy. ANOTHER Rock n Rap hybrid album. And this one has the unique selling point of featuring .... checks album ... a white dude of questionable politics and a fascination with jail-bait. Sounds like a cheap knock-off of Run DMC. No, I was not a fan.
I thought it was OK. The first few tracks are fun and have some brilliant guitars but it does get old after a while and the novelty wears off. There is some dross in the second half. I get that he's a crappy human being but it starts to feel a bit pointless rating these albums if we're just going on our feelings about the people themselves. I don't want to be his mate, but his album is less boring than a lot of other ones I've heard so far.
I can understand why some give such bad reviews, but it’s not really worthy of a 1. I’ve never really been into Kid Rock. He’s done some cool tracks, but nothing really new or genre bending. It’s not a bad record, some great riffs and vibes, but overall nothing special.
decent fun
Not bad, actually. I don't like rap in any style, but this was an interesting and varied album, with genuine musicality behind it.
Great few first songs and then blah.
Cowboy and bawditba (spelling) are guilty pleasures, albeit "chicks with beepers". Is very dated. Kind of fascinating to hear Eminem on a track. Lots of funk beats. Alright storytelling with some of the lyrics. Have to separate art from current artist. 'i am the bullgod' making an appearance twice was unnecessary
yeah i was having fun, fuck it
Influential if only for probably being the precursor to Country Rap. Kid Rock has never heard a good idea that he wasn't willing to steal and mix with another.
The users of this website have overstated the case for this album’s inadequacies. I understand why he became a superstar among a certain slice of America. Whatever else you wanna say, he’s got “it”. I’m also not the slice of America he’s aiming to hit. So he’s got a couple of songs in here, but overall it’s a 3.
3.5
Surprisingly some good songs
People are right about the comparisons to rage against the machine, I'm just here for the music, and it kept me entertained. It was aight.
"What if we took the ethics of poor white Michigan trailer trash and combined it with classic rock and hip hop samples?"
As I've said before in one of these reviews, I believe in separating the art from the artist. Kid Rock is clearly not a good person and this album isn't exactly a masterpiece but it is certainly better than some of the absolute garbage albums that this list contains. The album definitely skews towards the lower end of the rating scale but if you were a teen in the late 90's or early 2000's you absolutely banged your head to Bawitdaba. I mean, the song was included in a fucking Simpsons episode, you couldn't escape it. Bawitdaba, Cowboy, Devil Without a Cause and Only God Knows Why are really the only songs worth listening to here, mayyyybe Wasting Time as well. The rest is trash and all sounds the same. All in all this album is about a 2.5 out of 5, I'll be generous and give it a 3. Kid Rock the person would score a 0/5.
Sit down kids because you're not going to like what I have to say. The book of bad people making good art is thick. And there is a whole chapter on Trump-influenced MAGAts. But again, refers back to the first sentence of this paragraph. Cultural appropriation aside, this rich boy that grew up so far from Detroit that his current residence of Nashville is closer made a good album. Again, read the first sentence. The messaging in this album has aged worse than Kid Rock's racism, but for a reflection of the time Devil Without a Cause is a good album, but if Limp Bizkit can stay on this list, so can Robert Ritchie. Again… first sentence. If this list erased the terrible people, at least 250 albums would need to be removed. 3.5/5
3/
I honestly had no idea that Kid Rock recorded any albums before song "All Summer Long". Looks like I missed out on this record, it would probably hit hard in the late 90s. Nowadays, this album seems very outdated and not that interesting, the craziness for country rap rock is long gobe, I assume. Sentimental, but it doesn't provide much else.
Devil Without A Cause is Kid Rock's fourth album, and was the work that made him famous. His first three releases were a mixture of country and rap, and met with very limited success. For this album, Kid Rock mixed heavy metal with rap, and added an over-the-top persona. The combination worked well in the late 90s. The album is a strange mix - most is his "new formula" - metal/rap with a distinct swagger - but a few tracks are the county/rap from his earlier records. Kid Rock presents a difficult art v. artist question. This album was successful and influential, and should be favorable reviewed as such. The artist is a horrible human being, and has chosen to support a right-wing, hate-driven agenda.
Addressing the biggest thing here: Kid Rock is a dumb piece of shit. His current public persona as an ignorant MAGA moron is inexcusable, and he constantly reminds you of how dumb he is everytime he opens his mouth. ALL THAT ASIDE, I'm giving this three stars. For my personal rating system, 3 stars represents that an album was a good listen for historical/cultural edification. Similar to Limp Bizkit, this album helps frame a time period (America specific) in the late 90's, and contributed/defined the "nu-metal" genre. Is it a good genre? No. But was it important to understand the culture/music trends at the time? Yes. Additionally, this album kicked off his career and (somehow) lasting popularity. He got a lot of mileage out of the "red-neck pimp" persona, and some of the songs, while cringey in retrospect, are still bangers. It goes on too long (which was typical of albums in the late 90s CD era), and is really repetitive, but it has some legitimate grooves.
2.5
This dude would be an okay rapper if he knew how to do a chorus correctly.
Whoever produced this album did Kid Rock too many favors. It's not great music, has some pretty self absorbed lyrics, but it's fun. Small bias cause this came out when I was in high school and songs from here played at every party. Sometimes its nice not to think too much about it.
I thought I’d cringe (well, to be fair, I did cringe), but the music was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it’d be. Quite a lot was recognizable too. Kid Rock was more ingrained in my mind than I imagined.
Fun, didn't listen much
started off really strong but honestly just drags on too long
I thought I’d give this a higher rating. Outside of the big songs, the rest aren’t good.
His political views aside, this is a solid album. Some parts are quite explicit ("Welcome 2 the Party" I think), but the rest is good rock.
I liked this stinky trashbag of rap-rock-n-country a lot better than I expected to. It is front-loaded with hilarious hard-hitting classics. But when the Rock went soft on 'Only God Knows Why', I felt uncomfortable because I had finally heard the worst song of all time.
It was good. Not sure if I would listen for the second time
too full of himself
This album is not great, but doesn’t deserve to be in the bottom 10. It’s listenable, although I tend to hear the music above the lyrics.. 2.5/5
The band carries majority of the album. First half is pretty solid latter half kinda really sucks except for black chick white guy
In places this is pretty good, but in places it's about as dire as it gets, eg 'Cowboy'. Some great Nu-Metal stuff, then why do a shitty yankie ballad and use auto tune? Only God Know Why... Pillock. As for the lyrics on other songs banging (on about) hoe's. Unoriginal and boring. Musically and vocally, as I've said, in places, it's really good, so it's got to be a high 2 or a low 3. Difficult.
This is easily the most unexpected rating I've given, and I'm approaching 650 albums. I knew this album was on this list. I've seen the "Worst Of" list, and I was waiting for it with my one-star rating queued up. Then I hit play. OK, so the first two hits have held up pretty well. The one about trying to EASE my MIND is just sort of stupid, and the slow ballad has a comically poor overuse of Autotune. But two legit hits. A lot of albums here would be envious. Before I go any further, I'll acknowledge that Kid Rock has become a sleazy MAGA peddler, shooting at Bud Light because he cannot legally shoot at transgender people. And no, he wasn't from the trailer park in Detroit. But, to be fair, he was more gracious after the 2024 Trump victory than, well, pretty much all Republican politicians. And regarding the fake backstory, maybe it's just a character. I mean, I'm like 75% sure that David Bowie wasn't actually from outer space. 60% sure. So maybe Kid Rock is doing his low-rent version of the Thin White Duke. The Skinny Pale Dude. Anyway... OK, so then I got to the deeper tracks. Track three has someone - maybe a midget, maybe a 9-year-old, bragging about having a ten-foot dick, which is a level of absurdity that I thought was amazing when I heard Alex Harvey. The next song includes a sort of weird Yelp review for jumbo shrimp when you visit New Orleans AND a confession that he loves mowing his lawn, but secretly gets high before doing it. There's like three songs where he admits that he doesn't have any hit songs yet, but really hopes he gets one. And none of this comes across as purely stupid. He has one song where he basically tells bigots to die and go to hell, which I can get behind. Some of the lyrics are pretty funny. And I always like it when musical acts tweak the formula a bit, and rock-rap is definitely something different. A really good range of cameos, and I'll be damned, he ALMOST pulls off a '90s rap album that doesn't have stupid skits and poorly-aged homophobia. Almost. But I was surprised at how much he dodged that latter bullet. Does the album have its drawbacks? Hell yes. Gets really samey on the B side. One of the songs resembles 80s rap lyrics in the absolute worst way. He somehow hides that he can pull off having a decent voice by overproducing the vocals to sound like a Cher parody at times. Two of the hits are simply not good, one of them is laughable. This is not a roaring success. But... it WELL exceeded my expectations. Three stars. Could've been four, but he'll have to settle for three. He'll be OK, as he'll probably be appointed as the Ambassador to The Netherlands because of weed and the deep and worrying unseriousness of this upcoming presidency.
Laid back and irreverent, this is kind of fun.
I should hate this album. Kid Rock is alloathsome character. The album is juvenile and even for the time the rhyming is a notch better than a 1990s TV show special trying to be urban to get the drugs are bad message across but it somehow works.
2.7 2x definitely some bangers here that were cool back when i was in high school, but even then it was a little cringy and still is. would be a 2 star at best if not for nostalgia
Again, rap is not my favorite genre. Found this easier to listen to that more urban stuff. Good song elements...
Nu-metal and rap metal are not my things. Fifteen years ago, when I was starting actively listening to music, I would probably give it a 1 star. Today I was about to give it 2. Just before I did, I wanted to read up a bit more on him, and watched the 1999 Woodstock recording of the bawitdaba. And, damn, how pure it was back then. 90s might have started the downfall of music industry, but were a hell of a decade. Final answer: 3 stars - mostly by the comparison to today's music's lack of authenticity and enthusiasm.
Da sind wir jetzt beim schwierigen Thema wie abgedriftet und politisch verwirrt ein Künstler sein darf bevor er gecancelt werden muss. Musikalisch finde ich die Platte gut auch wenn mit Beigeschmack.
Never listened before and not bad at all Worthy of 3.5 stars if that was an option
A alr mid
3-
Borderline two stars for the repetitive, testosterone-inspired lyrics, but enough catchy (NFL pregame soundtrack) songs to earn a third.
Dude, too many of your songs sound the same. And stay away from my daughters.
I expected to hate this and was very pleasantly surprised. A bit too aping of beasties Ill Communication but otherwise really solid. This album was pushing 5 for me until the insanely bad vocoder schlock rock abortion of Only God Knows Why. Bad enough to knock a star off. Re-listen later with less distraction, I liked the music but very much didn't like the misogynistic and mostly pathetic lyrics. Musically, 5*. Lyrically 2* star. Vocoder ballad -1.
This started out a lot of fun. I realise that right now, he’s a Trump supporter and has worked hard to cultivate an image as a far-right poster boy, but boy I liked some of these songs. I put myself into the place I was at when I started listening and got stuck into it. But after a while, the novelty wore off. The album was thin. He didn’t say or do much that he hadn’t done in the previous songs. There’s quite a few clues in there too for who he’d later become. All in all, started strong but got less and less interesting as I listened.
not as bad as could be
Garbage human... loved this album in 9th grade though
I’ve heard Kid Rock singles (edited) but this is his first full album I’ve heard. Although I never liked that rappers steal (oh no wait they in ter po late) the melodies of famous songs I think the music in this album grabs you. Which is what I like in a rock album. By side two it was pretty repetitive though. Seems like he ran out of steam after the first half. His lyrics are set around a very limited group of ideas. I’m no expert on the rap rock genre so no idea if it was a breakthrough but it was new to me. Overall enjoyable.
It was fine. I'd probably rate it a 2.5, but it's not irritating enough to get just 2.
I’m annoyed to find this kind of catchy, will not be coming back though.
I loved it as a kid. It’s okay
Kid Rock is a hateful shit head. I went into this album with low expectations. It’s not bad. The hits are great. There’s just so much other music out there why spend your time listening to this?
Enjoyed it but not really my cup of tea. For nu metal it was decent tho.
Sehr cooler Rock-Rap, oder Rap-Rock? Whatever. Nice!
"Bawitdaba" and "Cowboy" were radio staples when I was a kid. They're still fun. The next track, "Devil Without a Cause" sounds like imitation Rage Against the Machine (with a little touch of Beck's "Odelay" around 3:08). The lyrics are all shit-talking to his critics and mythologizing how awesome he is, the sort of thing you hear in a lot of old-school hip-hop. There's a clear Beastie Boys influence throughout the album too. It all feels pretty earnest though. The genre mashups like "I Am the Bullgod" -- metal meets country meets rap-rock -- sound natural. It's not forced. Kid Rock has the swagger to pull it all together. Wow, he really underlines his Rage Against the Machine influence with "Fists of Rage." It's a little on the nose. The auto-tuned country ballad "Only God Knows Why" is a surprise. Nice change of pace. This album has lots of big riffs, catchy hooks and plenty of dick jokes. Good, trashy fun. Okay wait, this last track “Black Chick, White Guy” is surprisingly heartfelt. I could do without the misogynistic name-calling but overall it’s interesting to hear Kid Rock in storyteller mode.
brings back memories lmao
Surprised by this record. I totally understand why people got onto this back in 1998. Can see inspiration in bands like Linkin Park etc. I enjoyed it as mad as that sounds.
Mischung aus Rap, Rock und Country-Elementen. Mal was anderes.

Some of it was enjoyable but sometimes the lyrics were kinda cringey and weird
first listen definitely white trash to the max...it's not the worst thing i've heard but i wouldn't describe it as good
Not as bad as I was expecting from the reviews. Boisterous party music. Cowboy and Wasting Time are fun songs, and there are some hard driving bangers, Devil Without A Cause, I Am The Bullgod and Roving Gangster. If you’d have put this on at a party in 1998 it would have got people bopping around. I’m actually surprised it didn’t have much of an impact in the UK.
Entertaining and less cringy than anticipated.
I owned this. It was fun for parties.
Better than the thing I gave 2s to.
I enjoyed this album.....a classic....far from it. Sounds like he is trying to be Ton Loc. Looking at the reviews it looks like a Political race!!!!!!! Oh well... Fav was Roving Gangster and Where U at Rock.
Honestly... better than I thought it would be. Very front loaded though.
I know people love to hate this album but I don't. Am I going to listen to it again? Probably not. Are there some bangers on this album? You bet. Sorry, but "Only God Knows Why" is a legitimately great song. If a more respected band (I'm picturing The Eagles or Journey) came out with it instead, it would have reached stratospheric heights, and it's already a pretty famous song. This music isn't for everybody and at times is incredibly cringy, but Kid Rock carved out his own space in a new genre and arguably, that's worth listening to once. There's no denying that Kid Rock sucks as a human being; he's his own punchline at this point. However, I prefer to adopt the actual opposite of hatred: indifference. The world would be a better place if we stopped giving idiots so much attention.
I couldn't hate this as much as I wanted to. A natural progression from the Beastie Boys merging of punk and hip-hop, but this time with country-tinted grunge. The lyrics are absolutely horrible in some places but very sharp in others.
Nice crossover mix of Rap with distorted Rock Riffs!
Very '90's album. could be more enjoyable if he hadn't since then lost his mind.
I didn't hate it lol. It was cringe and I can imagine any edgy 13 year old at the time loving it, but maybe it's so cringeworthy its fun.
This was quite a bouncy little jam. Expected it to be awful but it was alright! It did sound like a parody band though 😅
wow this guy is savage 🤓🤠 This got so much better as it went on, really enjoyed some of the later tracks. There is definitely a place for this! Would be a solid 2.5 if I could.
Badwitdabba and Cowboy are classics as much as I hate him
Started off strong. Didn’t like the last few songs
Good workout album
Hard - rock rapeado, muy energico. Rage aginst the machine revisitado.
First time hearing a Kid Rock album. It definitely hits hard and has a lot of influences I recognize: Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains, and early RHCP. Lyrically amusing, but it’s all a bit manic for my tastes.
Rock und Hip Hop. Interessant zu hören. Vorallem im ersten Titel.
Meh
Empieza fuerte, recordándome a Rob Zombie/Nü Metal. Un Beck más oscuro con "Cowboy" y "I Am The Bulldog", más gritón. Vibes sutiles a Scott Weiland. Resumiendo. Buen disco, con altos y bajos, pero buen trabajo.
A trip back to 15. The album was ok. More varied in tone and song lyrics. Some brag rap/rock mixed with good storytelling. Enjoyed it more than I expected, but still can't rate it more than a 3/5 as I really don't understand why it's on here.
Because trumpists deserve music too? Let’s get serious for a second. Most artists are human beings, with a range of backgrounds and beliefs. The beloved Rush drummer, Neil Peart, was a passionate believer in Ayn Rand’s objectivist nonsense. Brian May of Queen and Phil Collins of genesis were lifelong conservative voters. George Harrison’s 'Taxman' is, when you think of it, not really pushing a progressive view of taxation. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull recently felt he’ll probably vote conservative. I enjoy all of these people’s music (some more than others.) The point is people whose politics you disagree with can still make great music. Look at Wagner and the festival in Israel. Which leads us to Kid Rock. An avowed trumpist, a pioneer in country rap, a once credible hip hop artist, and a massive hit in that mash up of sweet home Alabama and werewolves of London. The trouble is, ‘forever' aside (a great song on the next album) he just isn’t very good. He’s not bad. But most of it is forgettable pablum. It’s like Eminem decided to go even more white trash, and forgot about how to craft a song. And Eminem is on this… I did struggle with this a bit. Am I being classist? After all, he comes from a fairly lower class background and writes music for ‘white trash’. My personal music collection has a tonne of music written for white trash. I draw the line at racism and try to draw it at sexism. I can listen to the songs of quite horrible people and enjoy them. There are some lovely people whose music I can’t bear. The great sin is not being very good. Kid Rock is notorious but he is no Biggie Smalls. 2.5 stars.
Like the hard rock beats, not so much the misogynistic lyrics
Parts of this album may be objectively very bad... I don't know. What I do know is this was unironically one of the most entertaining and engaging albums to listen to this far. Kid Rock's raps are mostly fine, and he actually shines on slower rock tracks like Only God Knows Why.
Hip hop. Hard Rock. Bien la parte hard rock, coñazo la de hip hop
Weird that I didn't hate it.
Mér finnst Kid Rock frekar leiðinlegur karakter en ég verð samt að viðurkenna að það eru alveg hress lög þarna á plötunni.
1st and second song are definitely a vibe. Love the mix of rap and rock- unique and pleasant
Kuunteli helposti pari kertaa läpi ja omaan tuntemukseen isoimmat hitit on näemmä muilla levyillä.
Nimihän on ollu tiedossa, mut musiikkiin en juurikaan oo perehtyny. Hauskaa kamaa, 2,5*=3*
I actually own this album, I must’ve been in a angry mood one day in the early 2000’s. I doesn’t really get played a lot but there’s several decent songs. That said, all of it deserves the “Explicit” label. And outside the few decent songs, some of it is pretty bad. it’s loaded with tough posturing, misogynist lyrics, and lots of Kid Rock singing about how awesome Kid Rock is. And misogynistic deserves to be mentioned again. The album is certainly well put together, well produced. And every once in a while I want to turn the music loud, cruise my Midwest suburbs in my VW sedan and feel …. We’ll something. And this fits. But not for 70 minutes straight. And not with my family in earshot. 2.5/5 for the couple of decent songs. round to 3… barely.
Rock with some punky/screamy vocal and some rap. I like the rap songs better than the rest, but this is not something I would play regularly.
So fuckin stupid
3 stars. I can see why it spoke to a generation of dudes, and also at the same time I'm not the target demographic for this music so I don't owe him a single star more than I want to give him.
This is a really dumb album but it also goes dumb hard
One of those albums and artists I didn't know but this kicked into life and kept going. A really interesting mix of music and mahem. I don't know if I'll listen again but I think I enjoyed it.
Ik was enorm van dit album aan het genieten, tot het nummer 'only God knows why' die er voor zorgde dat mijn rating 2 sterren zakt
I didn't hate that, which is odd because early 00s when Kid Rock was all the boys I knew would play at 'parties', I did not like at all. Definitely dumb but in no way the worst thing I've listened to in this journey. As ever, the lyrics are probably objectionable if I could pick them out.
A confusing cocktail of rock, hip-hop, nu-metal and country. I see this album has got quite a lot of shade, but a large part of it is comprised of pretty catchy riffs. I don't quite get the Kid Rock persona but maybe you need to be American to understand. Overall, not a bad listen but probably won't be back for more.
Mezcla de rap y hip-hop con rock. Muy americano. Cierto paralelismo con Red Hot Chili Peppers. Con ritmo
The opening song is crazy good. Rap elements of this album sound goofy and the autotune song was just awful, but the rest is decent.
This was supposed to be terrible, why is it so hype? Falls off towards the last third of the album though
I did not want to listen to Kid Rock today, and I kind of hate it, but honestly it has some pretty clever moments and I've caught myself tapping my foot a couple of times. Biggest issue is that I can't tell how seriously this guy is taking himself. It's a 3 start light hearted bit of fun or a 2 star 'serious album'. But ultimately there was enough there for me to give it the benefit of the doubt.
better than it should be
A couple of good songs
Pretty good for its time.... only god knows why
Nice beats but could do without the language.
meeeeee
Nie wiedziałem, że Kid Rock jest rapperem :P
OK, so I used to think that kid rock was white trash. I still kind of do, but I didn't hate it. Though I won't listen again. A solid 2.5 round up.
Hip-hop rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Ajme ajme ajme ajme najbolji loš album svih vremena. Dat ću mu tri ali je prava ocjena 1 ili 5 pa je onda to neki prosjek.
It can be a fun album to rock out to. Damn shame that the artists horrible personality and ego shine through so well. Where you at is sooooo cringe.
Hip-hop rock. Ni fu ni fa.
i knew the name kid rock as some nonsene idiot but this album is actually pretty good, mix of rock and rap on southern country themes and some other flavours too
Couple real good songs mixed in with pure trailer trash music lol. At times it guided to 2 stars, but the good songs saved it to 3.
Had some bangers. Bawitdaba and Cowboy always go hard. But then had some absolutely ridiculous songs that I would just be laughing at. I like the mix of rock, rap, and autotuned country that Mr. Rock was able to mix together. Enjoyed way more than I thought I was going to. Great album to listen to while washing dishes
I liked this way more than I thought I would. Kid Rock sure loves his 40's. Some lyrics are cringe but also hilarious. Eminem was a welcome surprise.
I want to give this a 1, but the album is more fun than I expected -- it owes a lot to the production and the creative use of samples.
okay, this is actually pretty hard as fuck but it’s also corny as fuck many of the songs — but I would just like to call out Only God Knows Why specifically because of how trashy it is — are just so painfully cringe like it’s actually unbelievable and fucking eminem has a feature on this? like fuck off the production was often very well done but I can’t fucking believe this white trash joe dirt meets rage against the machine type bullshit actually exists 5/10
It's as horrible as some of these reviews make the album out to be. There are songs that are decently listenable, especially if you want to feel like you're in a college party in the US during the mid-2000s. That's the vibe it gives me. Kind of a bad party if that's the music you need to deal with the entire night, but it's fine as background noise and a fuel of hype during a very loud event. Standout (the word 'standout' is questionable but okay) tracks are Bawitdaba, Devil Without a Cause & Wasting Time.
1. Bawitdaba: Spacca 8.5/10 2. Roving Gangster (Rollin') 6. Wasting Time 7. Welcome 2 the Party (Ode 2 the Old School) 8. I Got One for Ya 9. Somebody's Gotta Feel This 10. Fist of Rage 11. Only God Knows Why 12. Fuck Off 13. Where U at Rock 14. Black Chick, White Guy In generale non il mio genere belle basi però
This was a trip. I played this album a lot when no one else was listening. Even when it was new I was a little ashamed to love this album. It doesn't hit me like it used to, but it's still pretty good. The production is tight. I can separate the man from the music. It's certainly dated and tainted, but this was a golden moment in rock and still worth hearing (except Only God Knows Why - I can't tolerate country and auto tune).
I used to like this album but he became such a toolbag its hard to enjoy now.
I'm not going to pretend that this is good or that Kid Rock didn't ruin The Simpsons, but...it's also not as bad as you remember. Best track: Cowboy. I need to take a shower
I know of Kid Rock's hits but never really delved into his back catalog. Kid Rock was hitting his stride when I was a "rebellious" youth listening to vulgar music. What he was doing with the country rock/rap fusion was never really done before. Some of it stuck, other things flopped. And a lot of people are quick to throw out all of Kid Rock's music because of his political leanings, unfortunate as they may be. I didn't love everything in this album, but there was quite a bit of nostalgia tied to Bawitdaba, Cowboy, and Only God Knows Why. In some of the music, listening now as an adult, there was some needless vulgarity by times, but I'm not prudish enough to hold that against him. I feel like I can smell the album cover.... Dank weed, wet dog, and econo cigarettes. There were a lot of songs on this record that repeated lyrics such as making note to 100 spoke wheels, hookers, being raised in Detroit, and 40s in the trunk of cars. A lot of people hate on Only God Knows Why because of heavy auto tune usage, but then they turn around and love T-Pain or Kanye West. To me it is a choice that was made, not necessarily out of necessity, but to add a little flair to the song. Favourite songs: Only God Knows Why, Cowboy, Bawitdaba, Devil Without a Cause, I Am The Bullgod, Wasting Time, Fuck Off Least favourite songs : Welcome 2 The Party (Ode 2 the Old School), Where U At Rock 3/5
Eh
Some really good stuff on this, but Kid Rock comes across as an arse. And as for the godawful Eminem...
Country-rock-rap? Mærkelig kombination, men kan et eller andet
Pretty fun album. I liked Cowboy Devil without a cause and I got one for ya. Although I get the feeling Kid Rock doesn't like women...
Nostalgic, trend setting, not my cup of tea, but can appreciate it. 3/5
I quite enjoyed tracks like "I Am The Bulldog" and the title track. But I equally disliked a lot of it as well. It's fusion of genres made strange listening at times.
Guilty pleasure? Oh yeah.
Very interesting album from late 90s. Great mix of multiple styles with rap as main characteristic.
It's a lot of fun to hate on Kid Rock and this record because it's dumb and gimmicky. But while entertaining trash is the prediction, Devil is in fact a solid collection of the sounds of its time and niche. A bit overstuffed, sure: The Eminem feature and surrounding songs scream "Pay attention to me as I do the thing!"; But Ode 2 the Old School is clearly what it says on the tin, the low-point rapping obvious. Rock doesn't end up being as genre-innovative as his image suggests. The grab bag approach to production makes up for that.
The first 2 songs are better than they should be. The rest is... meh
soooo... is it rap? is it nu metal? is it cuntry? is it pop? if i was wearing a cowboy hat i would doff it to kid rock and his genre merging abilities. fair enough rap and rock have been bed partners for a long time but mashing cuntry and pop in to it is some going. it has genuinely blown my mind, not necessarily in a good way, but its also not as terrible as i was expecting either. i did a google of his lyrics and he uses soo many words, all of it is basically him saying how he's a trailer park lothario come good, but soo many words. quite impressive for his meth addled brain to remember them all. 'I'm 3ft 9 with a 10ft dick'
Whilst I like the guitar based music with a rap vocal (works the rhythm for me), I don't like the pimp persona and dumb party bragging content.
Bom.
Legal
bem rock n roll
Not a bad album. In fact I was surprised how much I liked it. I will listen again. Pretty close to a 4 but ots a little too long so I'll give it a 3 🌟
I get that the album as one of the first full length album in the rap/rock genre. Problem is, Kid Rock is an AWFUL rapper. Only giving it three stars because Bawitdaba is a MELTER!
Some bangers.
Not overwhelming. Couple of collabs but nothing stuck
This is actually pretty competent, though the rap-rock delivery is not that original. The whole redneck pimp schtick I really just have no interest in (don't much give a shot about any other kind of pimp actually).
Not a bad album. In fact I was surprised how much I liked it. I will listen again. Pretty close to a 4 but ots a little too long so I'll give it a 3 🌟
Seeing kid rock in this lists makes me laugh but this album isn’t bad. Has some good hits. Some of the rapping is meh but the style changes makes it good for a wide range of people. 7.5/10
first few songs are pretty fun. rest of the album is pretty boring
j'aimais bien mais tu t'es très vite mis a me briser les couilles
3/5 this album confused me. It seemed to have from hiphop toy classic rock to metal...
Okay his flow sucks and he has approximately 2 things to say over this hour long album but I have to say this has ~atmosphere~ and the production is really good
Of its time
High highs and low lows
Tbh i did not expect much at all from this album. But I was pleasantly surprised. It's not really my style but i do understand why it's on the list
two stars cos it gave me some (unintentional) laughs
++: Bawitdaba, Cowboy, Devil Without a Cause, Wasting Time, I Got One for Ya', Fist of Rage, Fuck Off +: I Am the Bullgod, Roving Gangster (Rollin'), Somebody's Gotta Feel This +-: Only God Knows Why, Where U at Rock -: Welcome 2 the Party (Ode 2 the Old School) --: Black Chick, White Guy/I Am the Bullgod (Remix) 5,5/10
The singles bring back some teenage nostalgia of watching MTV but beyond that this album is obnoxious. Its about 7 songs too long and each song is so similar outside of the few singles. The lyrical content is that of an angsty 13 year old living out some kind of fantasy and saying fuck every other word in juvenile rebellion.
Tried hard to put my feelings for Kid Rock aside and listen to it as an album. Musically, some of it was interesting and I was more impressed than I thought I would be. But extremely juvenile, pretentious, and crass and ultimately a terrible record. Would still listen to this over Imagine Dragons though.
An interesting guy who makes music I just don't care for. I run into that a lot here, so how do you rate it? I can only go with my tastes. 2.0
It’s almost catchy until you start listening to the lyrics
There are a few pieces here and there that I appreciate for what it's done to music in general but overall it's not good and it's too long
I get why so many people hate this album. It's very annoying and I couldn't wait for it to be over. But I don't think it should be the third lowest rated album of all 1089 albums on the list. I've had much worse ones already and I'd listen to this over The Beatles or The Beach Boys any day
Oh, Boy. I used to listen to this album back in the day. In my defence... I THOUGHT IT WAS SATIRE! I assumed he was a comedian clowning on 'Muricans™. Sure, some of the jokes didn't hit, but the first half slapped. Imagine my surprise when I found out the dude was ugh """serious"""" 😅😅😅
Taken one at a time these songs can be kitschy ironic fun (Cowboy and Wasting Time being standouts). Listening to them all in a row is extremely grating. It is a war crime that this album is 70 minutes long. Only God Knows Why in the running for the worst song ever written. The song where Eminem drops on for a verse hilariously demonstrates just how dogshit Kid Rock is at rapping.
This was never one of my albums. I was very much into hip hop, metal, and a mix of the two during the era when this was released, but it always felt a bit cheesy to me. Still, I owned a copy, and I thought I’d listened to the entire thing at least a few times, but the majority of this album is unfamiliar to me. I didn’t even remember there was an Eminem feature. This falls somewhere between 2 or 3 stars for me. There are moments where I can feel the appeal, but those moments are outweighed by how much I dislike the entire notion of Kid Rock himself. 2 stars.
This album puts my biases to the test. Juvenile lyricism and corny hooks, but if Beck had put out Cowboy I might have praised it. I think for an album to be on this list it says something to the effect it had on the industry, but not exactly an endorsement to its lastability or to the individual making the music. I'm trying to separate the art from the artist, corny and goofy but there's some fun stuff in there mixed in the shit. Favorite Track: Cowboy
Bawitdaba is great. Cowboy is kind of great. Every other Kid Rock song seems to be a variation of those two, when it's not just regular white boy 90s dumb rap. I can separate the art from the artist, but also F Kid Rock.
Not the auto tune on the serious song
As someone who grew up in the Detroit Suburbs, I unfortunately know much of this album. That unfortunately means I also think the first two songs in this album are kinda good. Bawitdaba is a pretty good anthem for society’s rejects. I also like how Cowboy has like random honky tonks into southern guitar solos. It’s fun! The rest of the album? BAD! Kid Rock is personally gross. But shit man. Those first two songs are FIIIIIINE
Varje sekund låter inte hopplös men längden gör de många plågorna desto större.
nää
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Definitely some nostalgia bias for the rap-rock genre based on my age. I had never listened to the whole album and while some of it is cringe-worthy, some of it is also solid. Not something I’ll revisit a lot, but a decent surprise. 2.5
I first became aware of Kid Rock in 91 or 92. He was briefly mentioned in the Source magazine in a section that was dedicated to non major label music that was popular in different areas. I first heard this album when it came out. Due to my age and demographics this was pretty unavoidable in 1999. When I listened to this today I could not believe how much of the album I had memorized despite never owning the album. Try as I might due to how cheesy Kid Rock was even then I can't rate this lower than a 2. Maybe I am mistaking familiarity with quality but there are 5 or 6 very catchy songs on this album and that is enough for me to rate this a middle of the road.
Didn’t pay any attention to lyrics. Just a very random album.
Some truly cringe shit. And the songs that are slightly better are still shit
The only reason I'm giving this a 2 instead of a 1 is that SOME of it was at least slightly enjoyable, albeit not very much. I was really hoping for more but this really didn't do a lot for me. All I could think was I'd rather be listening to Rage Against the Machine if I'm looking for rap metal.
Rage Against the Machine if the Machine was impoverished hispanic immigrants and transgender people
Yeah, this is pretty terrible with very brief glimpses of fun. I can't even tell if this is supposed to be ironic. I'm guessing probably not
It’s crazy to think that people actually listened to this at one point. I listened in secret so I wouldn’t get caught listening. The arc of his career is unbelievable.
4.5/10
La primer canción me gustó pero después fue rap que no le gustó. 3/10
Yelawolf
Average
Yeah, it's pretty bad. Although I think I probably would have quite liked this in my mid-teens, so I don't want to slam it too hard as that would be hypocritical. I quite like most of the beats, however it's overlong and the subject matter and tone of the lyrics is awful. Terribly dated and another example of how this list differs from a "best 1001 albums".
Gets an extra star for “Bawitdaba” which has a knuckleheaded energy to it that is hard to deny - though whenever it starts playing I do wish I was listening to “Down With the Sickness” instead. Apart from that, an abject and awful record. The dregs of classic rock sloshing around underneath interminable lyrics, all delivered with a lack of any insight or authenticity.
Not sure how this could have made the list. Maybe it would have been slightly less annoying if I wasn’t thinking about his politics the whole time
rap, rock,
I remember listening to this album as a kid thinking it was great, now I'm just like meh and it has a couple of good songs, just different likes now lol
Not as bad as people make out. But very cheesy.
Do you think Shakespeare wished he could write poetry this beautiful?
Not my thing. A 2.
Not as bad as some people insist. It is pretty bad though. It's very dumb.
I have not heard this album in many years. Even then, I did not intentionally listen to the album, as it was playing in the background while my college roommates and I were playing video games. It was the late 90's and early 2000's, what can I say? It's a common misconception that every artist important to a genre has to be represented in this book. This Kid Rock album is not an exception. I guess there is an itch of sorts this album scratches and I do enjoy "Only God Knows Why," which was a song that ended up being a hit for him and so Kid Rock decided he was going to pursue that direction in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Say what you will about Kid Rock, but he is excellent at determining which way the music winds are blowing and then moving his music in that direction. He did rap-rock in the late 90's, slowly moved towards a more traditional rock and country sound and now he's dropping "God" in his songs because that's where the money is at. I guess a person needs to hear this album, just in case they ever wondered what the high point of Kid Rock's recording career was.
Typical late-90s (kid)rock, loud rap-metal with catchy vibe.
Don't mind some of what's happening here musically (could imagine some tracks on a Beck album, and Joe C is fun). But that voice, those lyrics, that attitude, that hair, that man - eurgh, eurgh, eurgh.
The majority of the songs come off like wannabe Rage Against the Machine, except Kid Rock forgets to include any of the politically and socially conscious lyricism that makes RATM so compelling. The country rap songs (which I thought were supposed to be the hook of the album) don’t really stand out or have been done significantly better by other artists. So no, Kid Rock, you did not in fact “stomp all over you test of time.”
Ugh! This is a tough one. Having grown up just south of the Detroit area, Kid Rock was huge around us. We listened to this album a lot. It was actually strange to listen to it again because all of the songs and a lot of the lyrics immediately came back. It's honestly hard to set aside what Kid Rock is today versus this album. And to reconcile what he claims to be about today versus what he was when this album came out (and the lyrics in this album). Having said all that, if I evaluate the album on its own, it was a good album for what it was and it definitely sort established a new style of rap.
I didn't like this album. Everyone that did rap/rock during this time feels like they did it better. Either the music was better or the lyricism. This is just mostly bad music that plays to the lowest common denominator. Songs about debauchery whit rhyme delivery that is copy pasted from a decade prior. The stories, when they are offered, feel forced and don't pan out well . I'm giving it a 2 because some of the songs work ("Bullgod" sticks out) but it's mostly just bad music. Funnily enough, the album came up right after Fear of a Black Planet. 2/5
A couple decent tracks but it’s too long.
I'm glad I've now heard the most patriotic lyric of all time: "Where u at?" "Over there with a bad attitude 'cause I just don't care"
Earworms and nostalgia save this pile of crap from a one star rating.
Being honest, there’s some catchy shit here. It’s shit, most certainly but better than a 1
çok böyle bi "killing in the name of" vibes ama değil garipli
Not a fan
This had potential to be good, but didn’t live up to it. I like genre-bending, but this feels too try-hard.
Lyrically pretty garbage. Catchy at points? Nostalgic for some one who heard some of these songs on the radio? Maybe. Still pretty garbage
Strong start, fell off a cliff then factor in the art vs artist debate
OG rap-metal, alright! Ik fuck heavy met de low-tuned guitars en aggressieve rap. Ik fuck minder met de country en pogingen tot classic hiphop. Veel van de gangster rap lines komen ongelofelijk cheesy over from his white ass. "I don't steal from the rich and give to the poor I take from my bitches and give it to my whore's" ... Really? No liked songs
I am very conflicted on this album (except the last track, that is straight trash). I was the perfect age for this music when it first came out and I have good associations with a number of the songs and my life at the time. On the other hand the artist has taken a hard turn into an area that I absolutely despise. Listening now I have both of these in mind and I cannot reconcile them. I think the bad outweighs any nostalgic good. Plus that last song ugh.
This album sucks and Kid Rock is a piece of shit, but 'Bawitdaba' slaps, unfortunately. Lowest of 2/5s
Okay, I was expecting this to be worse than it was. In a list with a lot of boring music, this is at least interesting. I was expecting the production to be bad, but it's great. The tracks are good, the hooks are solid, I imagine it turned out just the way Kid Rock hoped it would. I don't like NuMetal so doing it badly doesn't matter to me much but the soul and rap elements, they aren't good, but its an experimental fusion. Honestly it's between a 2 and 3, and if you told me that you were into this, I wouldn't think any less of you.
I don't think this is quite as deserving of the "worst album on here" as some other people do but it is pretty terrible. The idea of "country rap" should have died extremely quickly as absolutely none of it works, especially with a shit rapper like kid rock. Whatever Nappy Roots was doing is probably the real example of that. Kid Rock's rhymes are mostly generic or downright stupid; none of the lyrics are any good, though I will shamefully admit I always laugh at the line "all my heroes in the methadone clinic". The "rock music" aspect of this is quintessentially bad 90's, complete with turntable cuts that sneak through. "Welcome 2 the Party" is an attempt to recreate an 80's rap song but it is terrible; that style is gone for a reason and there's no way Kid Rock of all people is going to be doing it justice anyway. Attempts at being soulful are all universally shit; the only emotion he can really express is anger and even then it comes across as more of a brag than anything else. The songs go on way too long and the choruses all have these pre-hook loops that make them unnecessarily long. The whole album is unnecessarily long, we don't an hour of this. That's a lot of words to say this is bad. Is it the worst album on here? I don't think so. I'd rather be forced to listen to this than any of the 100 Nick Cave albums that are inexplicably in the list.
I hate Kid Rock, but I am always nostalgic for the 90’s. I knew three songs on the album. One of them I swear I haven’t heard since prob 1999, and I remembered half the lyrics.
Now that I'm older, I can see how stupid kid rock is Some stuff here is fun but not great
I didn’t like the first song, but at least it had something to say artistically. But the rest of the album backslid into the same casual misogyny that pervaded this era.
He seems like a bad hang
Starts of so energetic and heavy but devolves into pure vulgarity and boring production. Would have served much better as a single disc LP. Half full and half bad.
To say a lot of this sounds like a bunch of poor attempts at sounding like White Zombie or Rage Against the Machine is an insult to those two bands. It combines the worst aspects of gangster rap, county and western, and rock and somehow makes it even worse. Just scrapes a 2 out of 5
How should this album be fairly evaluated? The problem with some nu metal was never really the music, but rather the attitude that accompanied it, namely the transfer of the victim narrative typical of rap to a group of people who were not marginalized at all. Even if it only falls under nu metal in the broadest sense, “Devil Without a Cause” is a good example of this: not a bad production, but so heavily conceived by white trash for white trash that a clear-thinking person simply cannot identify with it. Added to this is the fact that everything Kid Rock has done has aged extremely badly against the backdrop of political developments over the last 25 years. All of this is a shame, because the people involved certainly did not lack musical talent. But I simply want nothing to do with this extreme combination of chauvinism and hostility toward education.
It's unbelievably annoying how good Bawitdaba is. The rest of this is extremely annoying and long. Like... just so bad.
Well as a positive this is not as bad as I thought it would be and the first track is actually a banger but the rest is just not interesting at all or bad.
Well, I understand (I think I understand!) all this hatred. I listened to this album trying to keep an open mind, but unlike many other albums on this list, this time I focused on the lyrics, trying to pay more attention to them, influenced by many opinions I read. The truth is that, in the end, my opinion is: - I think it's much ado about nothing; - the guy is (was) an idiot trying to act tough; - this never had any impact here or in my life and experience in the 90s (I'm talking from Portugal), we were all very interested in listening to other things; - the lyrics, at least many of them, are ridiculous; - once again, everything about this album and this artist is much ado about nothing; - this is definitely not an album you have to listen to before you die! You can die in peace if you've never heard it, you haven't missed anything; That said, I give it a 2 because it didn't make me feel anything, but I don't give it less because I think I've had much worse here, OK? And that's it ;-)
i mean, this fucking guy
It's Kid Rock
i thought it would be some dumb fun but god it got annoying
I don't dislike the two big hits off this--I still remember when I saw Bawitdaba debut on 120 Minutes years ago--but even then it just seemed uninteresting (though catchy!). The whole album is just...one note, I guess? Not sure how to describe it.
It’s really not hard to turn your head off for a bit as this is on, the reviews are quite overblown. I mean Only God Knows Why is one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard and the schtick does wear thin pretty quickly. But it feels wrong to give one star when there were a decent bit of grooves I enjoyed. Even my more positive review has this limping into two stars though. Rating: 1.8
Not quite me but will listen again at least once.
Det står skidt til, når en lille bid Eminem er et lyspunkt i den samlede plade.
The first two tracks were huge and still are relevant to a degree today. KR was for sure one of the pioneers of this blended style. That said, the rest of the album is just a struggle to get through. Above a 2 due to impact, but I just can’t get to a 3. 2.5/5
Being forced to listen to this the week before Xmas really crapped on my holiday spirit. I’ll give credit to the first two tracks for being hits, but over an hour of this was simply boring and painful. For a guy that comes from a reasonably affluent background to present himself as having it rough is just silly. The music is generic, and the lyrics when not being insulting are elementary and sophmoric. There were other artists around this time that were clearly better at delivering rock/rap performances.
Hard for me to wrap my head around this being an album I must hear before I die. The lyrics are truly atrocious. First two tracks are pretty catchy and gotta give props for having big hits. Only God Knows Why could be a solid song with a better singer and less vocal effects (I'm told he didn't use autotune, which is wild). Anyways...this should be a basement level 1* rating, but I am rating up based on one thing alone: Joe C. This album would have benefited from having him on more than one track. I'm the J-O-E to the C ho Call me Joe C, got more game than Coleco I'm a freak ho, call me sick Three foot nine with a ten foot dick RIP, sweet prince. 1.5/5
The rap + rock combo is not bad but the musicianship is just insipid
