Reviews (page 4 of 13)
Really good. So creative and eccentric. Rhythmically interesting with a whacked out tour guide in David Byrne. Deserves another listen. Provisionally a 4.
Classic & fantastic. Some newer beats to my brain in some circumstances, a relisten is always worth it when certain songs you’d sidelined pop out upon the 3rd/4th listen. Always loved Talking Heads, don’t think I’ll ever stop
Hard to go wrong with some fun New Wave weirdness from Talking Heads
Eh... I don't know how to rate this one. Less memorable songs than the other 'classic' Heads albums, and yet still miles above whatever came after Naïve Melody. I think the Al Green cover of "Take Me To The River" still makes this a 4, though.
Very solid offering from TH! 4.2
Better than their debut. More energy. Though I think "Take me to the River" is a bit boring. It was the only song a knew from this album, so I am glad that it's sound is not what the rest of the album sounded like.
Solid
Hat mich abgeholt, macht bock
There's a lot more I like here than what I don't.
Now give me even MORE songs about buildings and food
4 out of 5. Almost a five, there are slightly better Talking Heads albums than this one. That said this is still a solid album.
Every pre-1985 Heads record is at least a 4. This one came out in 1978.
I was familiar with the hits from this album, but otherwise, it's my first time listening to this particular album. And, as usual, Talking Heads are great. I'm definitely going to add this to my collection.
I don't think I've heard this record before (except for Take Me to the River), but I really liked it, maybe my new favorite Talking Heads album. 4.25/5
I said I needed to listen to other Talking Heads albums, and lo and behold, here is another one! This one is weird but good. In some ways it didn't grab me, but I still did like it quite a bit. I will want to revisit this down the line, but it was good to great. 3.5/5
This is Talking Heads at their best. My favorite era. It's easy to see how they gained popularity with this heavy rhythm-centric setup. Every song is danceable. It's every club owner's dream. Brian Eno's production was perfect on this one.
Bra band, bra platta
Second album, still finding their feet but it's a great snapshot of a band doing things that weren't really been done by anyone else. Byrnes lyrics and delivery are stepping up, and Tina Weymouth holds down that bass so well. Standout track is a cover (Take me to the River), but it's one they really make their own (once again with Tina taking it to a new level).
enjoyed
Love tracks 1,5, 10,11 And foundational album/artist that has inspired many rock artists that I listen to today. Really enjoyed going back in time and it felt easy for me to approach. Score: liked it a lot, I think I would enjoy it on relistens
Still sounds unlike most of the bands they influenced.
I listened to the original release (eleven tracks). Two of these tracks are familiar to me. The songs are peppy and the music is good. Thinking about recent album ratings, this one seems like it is four stars. Hopefully this is not the beginnings of album ratings creep.
I only really began delving into Talking Heads’ music this past year or so, and have thoroughly enjoyed everything I’ve heard. Any of their first four albums could be in this list (and probably are, I don’t know), but this is a brilliant album - probably their most cohesive. Original, solid, consistently interesting and exciting.
Tina and Chris really stand out on this album
Excellent!
I love the talking heads. I don’t think this is their strongest album but there’s 3 songs I really like. Pretty great.
Very smooth transitions between songs, at times didn't even realize a new song started.
Great album
This is like the third solid album in a row which has been rare so I’m pumped about that! This alb started off really special for me. Luke I was enamored but then it kinda tapered down a bit but not enough to rate it less than a 4
Yet another great album by the Talking Heads. I think that its biggest sin is that, although a great album, it is the weakest link within the Heads' discography "imperial phase". Had a great time listening to it.
I'm generally Talking Heads agnostic, and for the first half-ish of this album I was afraid I would remain that way. But somewhere around Found a Job I feel like this REALLY picked up. The more it focuses on the instrumentals and grooves the better, in my opinion (sorry David Byrne I think I like your voice better in your later work)
this was a fun one
Pretty good, though I'm not a fan of the main singers voice which is probably why I don't listen to them regularly.
Outstanding
Very fun and funky. Will listen to it again
Day 145 I LOVE THE TALKING HEADS (4/5)
Take Me To The River is worth 4 stars for me.
What the hell was that?
I had Fear Of Music 5 days ago and while this one is very good, it doesn’t quite hit the same heights for me. I enjoyed it throughout but I can’t say there were any tracks I absolutely loved. Maybe it needs another listen or two. Top Track - Take Me To The River
6 von 10
Niesamowitą energię ma ta płyta. Radość, pazur, artystyczny sznyt. Wszystko, czego oczekuję po lekko alternatywnym zespole z mocnym komercyjnym zacięciem. Chce się tańczyć, chce się żyć. 7/10
Excellent. Really glittery and driven. Uncharted
Have a couple of talking heads albums, not this one. Very cool album. Maybe lacks a standout track or two. Oddly, take me to the river might be my least favourite track on the album. 4 Heard before? Some songs Owned: No: 29/115 (25%) Will I get? Yes
if them heads did less talking and more singing this would've been a 5
I love buildings and food!!!!
Just great.
I mean Scottish Legend, Dave (I know he left early on in his life but I still claim him. We don't have much going on). A great and unique album by the TH and first with another great producer (and one of my favourite artist) Brian Eno. My one critisim is this expirence flies by but thats minor when you enjoy it all. 9/10
The Talking Heads just have sounded like they were from outer space in 1978.
how the hell did these guys ever get close to mainstream? what does david bryne even do? how the hell is this groovy???? ok honestly I loved it. 5 is generous but best songs: take me to the river, the good thing side note: remarkable numbers of songs named like other popular songs
There is just something about the art rock vibe of Talking Heads that resonates with me. David Byrnes’ chunky delivery, the pulsing drums, jangly guitar, driving baselines all come together as musical bliss to my ears.
Surprisingly funky, sometimes brilliant. Gets a bit repetitive at times
One of the best opening tracks, fun arty art rock from then on. Oh also a great album title
Back on May 11th of this year I started this project. My first album was Talking Heads 77, and it was the perfect way to begin. It was an album that I hadn't listened to but a band I really liked, and I enjoyed it very much. I wondered when I'd get my next TH album, and day 186 was the answer. This is an album I've likely only listened to once or twice before. When I'm in the mood to listen to them I typically play Stop Making Sense and not one of their studio records, so this has fallen by the wayside for me. I love that this is the beginning of them really figuring out who they are, with the focus on rhythm becoming such an important part of their sound moving forward. Of course Take Me to the River is a great song, but there are other standouts including Thank You for Sending Me an Angel, The Good Thing, and Found a Job. There isn't a bad song in the bunch. I prefer some of their later albums, but this was a more than solid sophomore effort.
The Talking Heads are, hands down, one of the greatest bands of all time. Smart lyrics, yes. But what really clinches it is the idiosyncratic yet relatable sound, here aided by Brian Eno. Punk, funk, charming. David Byrne is a genius. “Take Me to the River” gets More Songs to four stars. Does “The Big Country” get it to five? 4.5?
There's something about Talking Heads that just clicks with me, and it always has. This is no exception. Thanks for a great album, you weirdos. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best Track - "Take Me To The River"
disco bacaninha do TH. 4 estrelas...
I've listened to Talking Heads a lot over the years and they are one of the only bands who retain this aura of weirdness about them. I think it's the oddity of the David Byrne vocals over a funky repetitive backdrop - I find myself becoming a weirdo too as the music drags me in. Being weird never stops being fun.
One of the best new wave albums. Talking Heads really come into their own on this one. 9/10
Very good. Loved Artists only and Take me to the River is a classic that was nice to hear again. Cool musical effects and concepts that I hadn’t heard before. Would listen to again.
A very interesting album from the Talking Heads
Love it. Own it.
More Reviews About Beats And Lyrics. ★★★★
Talking Heads midt imellem post-punk og deres evigt underlige take på new wave. Vild med det.
Not surprisingly this was fun. I only knew one song but overall this one was upbeat and had good rhythm section work.
Great energy on this one.
Not my favorite Talking Heads album, but there were some bops on here for sure.
Always enjoy Talking Heads. First time listening to this one; only song U know is Take Me to the River. Four stars
Very nice
First full talking heads album I’ve listened to. I like it.
Second Talking Heads album from this list that I've listened to. Marketed improvement over "Talking Heads: 78", so many fun songs, so much energy, so much weirdness.
The talking heads are good-weird. There are albums that are just odd, but this is fun odd. This made my housecleaning considerably more enjoyable
Really enjoyed the guitar work on this, best described as by some as “chiming, sometimes staccato, guitar lines that emphasize the rhythm section.” The songs aren’t as memorable as other Talking Heada albums so that’s why it’s. 4 star instead of 5 for me.
I love this album. This one isn't about any individual song but rather just the way the songs fit. It's classic Talking Heads and it invites repeat listens from the start. This one was easy to start over once I finished it.
I don’t know that it would be my top pick for a Talking Heads album, but it’s hard to listen to it without cracking a smile and bobbing your head along. The cover of Take Me to the River is an all timer. I would consider giving this one another listen in the future.
There's this band called Shellac, no albums on this list for some reason. My favorite thing about them is the time they said that every single song they've ever written was about one of two things: Baseball or Canada. Even if it's an offhand mention of one of them, it always comes back to Baseball and Canada. I really wanted to know if every Talking Heads song was similar, and I even started thinking of ways it would be connected (take Listening Wind being about blowing up a building). I am very sad to announce that very few of these songs are about buildings or food. You should go to Remain in Light if you want songs about buildings, though. Still an amazing album, but if that career-spanning idea came true, it'd be one of the best albums to come out of the 70s, if not, the entire 20th Century.
Luvvd this one way more than the other talking heads release. Maybe it’s the Eno :) FOUR!
I do like the Talking Heads, but I found them a bit later in my life. The only thing I knew about the first 3 albums was the singles. And they're pretty great! Listening to this whole album at once kind of puts me off, though. David Byrne's voice is too often annoying. And he leans into the weird, screechy parts. Stop it, man! The music is great. They're all really good musicians and they got even better over time. (So did the production.) "Take Me to the River" is a fantastic cover and one of their best songs. All of the rest kind of blends together for me, even after listening three times. Each one is fine to listen to, but altogether it's too much, too same-y. I want to give it a 3.5 or so, but I'll pump it to 4 because overall they're great. (And some of these songs are even better on live sessions!)
Absolutely loved this album had a good dance. Again not an album I've ever heard by talking heads before but it was good
Talking heads are legends, but I'd rather listen to the greatest hits album. Its good to hear their other stuff but a lot of it has a very similar sound.
Favourite track: The Big Country. There are some great ideas on this album but it feels like a bit of a transitional step towards bolder artistic statements on Fear of Music and Remain In Light.
4 out of 5 Lot of songs I have never heard before. Another great Talking Heads album. Great vibes
Another talking hgreateads
This record is so well produced! Talking Heads in their purest form. Is it bad that David Byrne is my least favorite member of the band? Anyway, this has Eno’s finger prints all over it, and you can tell that most of them had recently been jamming with Bowie. Some seriously fresh creative energy was flowing around this crowd in the ‘70s.
Pretty good, I like rock music and it did feel quite classic. I've actually gone back and listened to this one a few times.
i <3 talking heada
Another great album and tunes, thx!
I like Talking Heads a lot, but this isn't my favourite of their albums. I prefer the afrobeat influences on albums like Remain in Light. This is still decent enough, just not great.
i think it's pretty good although I have to say David Byrne's voice is not my absolute favorite. It's a little too characteristic for me. Like, I really enjoy it in Psycho Killer but other than that its hard for it to go with much. Good songs!
I was glad to not be familiar with any of the songs except the one cover. The few Talking Heads songs we still hear today are overplayed/outside of their album context and it detracts. Might listen to this one again.
art rock 70er, funky, genreübergreifend
cool
I don't often revisit the Talking Heads 70s stuff so it was nice to hear this again after so many years. While its still not as good as their 80s stuff in my opinion, this is still a very fun album. I've always enjoyed this album cover for some reason. Favorite track: The Good Thing 3.5/5
This was pretty fun. Not my favorite of theirs, but it’s solid and has some good hits.
I've always had trouble listening to a Talking Heads album in full for whatever reason, but this is consistently great. Some under the radar songs here. Honestly, my least favorite is probably Take Me To The River.
Previously rated: Remain In Light (2/5) Talking Heads 77 (4/5) Fear Of Music (4/5) ************************** I've never heard of this album. I groaned when it came up. Ugh, did we need another Talking Heads album? Then I looked at my previous ratings. I guess I liked them more than I remembered (well, two of the three albums at least). I zoned out a bit listening to this, but what I heard was enjoyable enough, just interesting enough to want to hear it again.
This was ok. The second half was more enjoyable than the first half. Take Me to the River was the highlight
Some bangers, no complete clangers, just a bit of album filler, more than made up for by Thank You, Found a Job, Take Me To the River and The Big Country. Two guitars hard at work.
Talking Heads are really cool. David Byrne is really cool. I've always felt like a connection with this sound and all of it's idiosyncratic "I'm making music to express myself and I don't care where the style takes me". I love that they have had a new resurgence and younger people are getting to hear them because I think they are really unique. When I hear this album it makes me realize that if I was born in this era I would have been a huge fan. I would have grown up with this record. "The Big Country" sounds like a Neutral Milk Hotel track- a band of paramount importance to my maturing musical tastes as i was growing up. It's a great record. 4/5!
Talking heads are classic but this album wouldn't be my choice, I think the preceding and two following albums are far better. I would probably rank this as my 5th favorite TH album but that is still far better than most albums. Never going to complain about listening to Talking Heads as they are one of my favorite bands.
Enjoyable, can't say I know much taking heads but it was a fun listen
Nice stretch for a change. Solid album. I feel like it gets you right to the edge of being too repetitive without going overboard. Listened to it again immediately. 4 stars.
It kind of sounds like early versions of Talking Heads songs I'm familiar with. But...even preliminary Talking Heads is good music.
7/10
First half better than second but the whole thing is awesome
TALKING HEADS! But just before their trio of masterpieces
Another great effort from talking heads maybe not as good as the debut but still pretty much on par. Take me to the river is great so is Found a job and The Big country 8/10 Favourite: Take Me to the RIver Least Favourite: Stay Hungry
solid as always
This is the kind of thing I was hoping for from this challenge!! I know Talking Heads from their singles, but this was my first full album experience—and it blew me away. The quirky energy, tight grooves, and Brian Eno’s production make every track feel fresh and inventive. “Take Me to the River” is a standout, along with "I'm Not In Love" and " The Big Country" (all added to my liked songs on Spotify!), but the whole album is a weirdly joyful ride through Byrne’s anxious, architectural world. It's not ll about David Byrne though. The band’s interplay is razor-sharp, with Tina Weymouth’s basslines and Chris Frantz’s drumming locking into grooves that are deceptively funky beneath the post-punk surface. After 46 albums, this is the first one that I don't already own that I now need to own on vinyl.
Fun album
A very cool and fun entry in the Talking Heads catalogue.
Wow! Pleasantly surprised. Let the girl be with the girls Stay hungry Thank you for sending me an angel There are touches of velvets, garage rock and funk and its very enjoyable.
A very fun, energetic, and clever album. It took me two listens to get, as it wasn't as catchy as the other Talking Heads songs that I've heard before, but on the second listen, I got more into the energy of it, and the sarcasm of the lyrics. One of my brother's all-time favorite bands is Talking Heads, so I've been looking forward to getting their albums and finally checking them out, and this did not disappoint. 4/5.
these guys are so fun
Lots of familiarity with Talking Heads' later discography, and also their debut, which I'm pretty sure Dad had on vinyl rotation for many years. Hadn't heard of this one, though, despite having heard Take Me to the River thousands of times over the course of my life so far. Finding myself getting closer and closer to my inevitable Intense Talking Heads Phase. Favorites: Warning Sign, The Girls Want to Be with the Girls, Artists Only, I'm Not in Love. EXTREMELY danceable and grooveable - you can hear the kernel of the later sound starting to germinate. I love how weird David Byrne is as a vocalist - trite but true. Something so refreshing about it every time despite his being such an iconic voice - I'm growing weary of cursive singing, I think. Would spin again gladly.
I wasn’t into Talking Heads in their heyday but I’ve warned to them since. Really enjoyed this album
First off, exceptional title. Second, Talking Heads is just feel good stuff. The album flows nicely and is quite relistenable. And there's better Head to come! Top tracks: "The Big Country," "With Our Love," "Take Me to the River," "Stay Hungry"
Hard to rate them I always feel like David Byrne is a few steps ahead & waiting for the rest of us to catch up (the love is real, met him in an elevator once & almost died trying to keep my cool).
I'm such a fan of people like David Byrne. He's edgy, whimsical, and uniquely him. I can see those Scottish/New York roots shining through.
Because their catalog is so consistently brilliant and some songs are better known in their later live iterations when they could really stretch our - this one may not get the love it deserves. Bottom line - it deserves a lot of love. Funkier and groovier than their debut. The studio truly enters the chat (thank you Mr Eno). Jagged edge abound but there is also plenty of ambience as a counterpoint. Feels like this could come out today and find a place. Singular.
Eccentic, but marvellously eccentric!
Yeah I love this band so much. Fantastic album not my favourite from Talking Heads but class nonetheless 4.8/5.0 Best Song: Take Me To The River
Super great! I think found a job is in my Mount Rushmore of talking heads songs, what a fucking number that is. Def want to get more into this album!
WOOHOO! Forgot about how much this album slaps wow. Talking heads is nuts so consistent and so good. Proper 4.5.
Nothing but bangers. David Byrne had the sauce, what else can I say
Consistently fun with some TIGHT grooves, and just the right amount of weird in the vocals to match the funk of the band. As a first time Talking Heads listener, I can say that there was not a single miss on this one. Great stuff! Also surprised to see Brian Eno here doing songs about buildings and food? I thought he only made music for airports 🤔 Standouts: Found a Job • Artists Only • I'm Not In Love • Stay Hungry
i wouldn't live there if you paid me
Great band from the 70’s-80”s. Great music. Still greatly even today. One of those timeless bands.
Love
yep! it's talking heads favorite songs: with our love, the good thing, found a job, i'm not in love
By this album Talking Heads were a polished alternative rock band. It fact they are probably the original alternative rock band. This album has one song after another offered up by bands smooth grooving sounds. Take Me To The River tops the list of these.
Talking Heads are always a treat. Byrne and Eno make for such a good combo
okay! can we get some more talking heads in here!
Some of their songs really have a disco vibe without the funk. Overall, I like the disco x rock combo. Not really my type of music, but I can see why they'd be a hit in their time.
I like the Heads and their angular, abstract, arty approach but other than Speaking In Tongues I usually just dip into their earlier albums for their better known originals. This doesn't really have any of those songs/singles though, so it largely passed me by, but reappraised here. Seems to get stronger as it goes on, from the B-52s ish Artists Only through a couple of LCD moulds and templates then veers off in another direction for the Al Green and Big Country closers.
This album grew on me though is somewhat overshadowed by their other stuff in my mind.
Cracking album, brilliant cover version of Al Green's 'Take Me To The River'.
the live set from the expanded edition is worth checking out
A lot of interesting parts of songs, though oddly I wouldn't say I "enjoyed" this that much, but am intrigued enough that I need to relisten multiple times
Theres too many Talking Heads albums on this list but I vibed with album. 3.5/5. Raising to a 4.
3.5 08.01.2025
A great album on headphones.
Amazing album, incredible song writing!
Shocked by how many of these songs I don't know...digging it as expected.
Thoughts before listening: One of Talking Heads best from their heyday. I love everything TH put out, and this album is no different. Lots of classics on this one. Review: So, on this listen, I can say that this actually isn't necessarily my favorite album by TH. Its not bad, but it lacks the stone cold classics of an album like Remain in Light. I also feel like the songs on here exist in better versions on Name of the Band is Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense. That being said, there are definitely some bangers on here and this is overall a strong release, especially so early in their career. 4-stars
4/5 loved this album back in college
Joyful, groovy, not the best talking heads album, but still a talking heads album.
Love Talking Heads!
Toca hoy una banda que adoro. Siempre vuelvo a ellos por Remain in Light. A veces, seguido.
vibe
I don't know how to rate this as it's so very itself and I've heard bits around for my whole life probably.
Good fun! Listened several times in the day
This is just great - One of their best albums
I don't know how to describe this other than it's just an incredibly fun album. None of it was particularly groundbreaking, it was just simply fun. I have to pick one for the playlist. The obvious choice would be "take me to the river", but I think I'm going "I'm not in Love" . I just really enjoyed that one.
Not sure what to make of this album. I like Talking Heads. They're weird without being annoying.
Annoying on paper, great in execution. Awkward, clipped, and smarter than most bands ever get. You don’t have to like it to admit it’s solid.
This must have sounded crazy in the 70s
Talking Heads bring a marvelous ‘70s energy. The bass lines are nice and meaty, the synth and guitars drive the song with wacky, crazy energy, and Byrne’s vocals perfectly suit the cocktail. Found A Job is one of my favorite Talking Heads songs because of how much is going on. The big kick drums with the chorus, the frenetic solo, the strange lyrics; it all works together to create pleasant strangeness. I’m Not In Love has a great drumming performance, and I also quite like the guitar and banjo (?). The Big Country surprised me, with the bluegrass steel guitar.
It's great, but still this must be the least exciting of their albums. I'll be looking forward to all of their other albums on this list.
Nije ovo ko fear of music ili remain on light ali je svejedno fantastično i ima take me to river, jednu od najboljih obrada ikada
I love you david byrne. faves from this: the girl wants to be with the girls, artists only, take me to the river, and the big country
wazzup losers, i bet u thot id h8 this
Felt like it was a very good album, some incredibly relatable songs
I like the talking heads… obviously I’ve heard their hits before but i’ve never listened to one of their albums
Siempre será entretenido escuchar a Talking Heads
1. Found A Job 2. I'm Not In Love 3. Take Me To The River
I know multiple songs already so it must be a part of the zeitgeist
Take Me to the River.
Never listened to him before, enjoyed it
Not an album with a ton of stand out tracks, but overall such a solid listen. Hypnotic, funky, weird. The closer, the Big Country, is a beautiful track and the rare song with a laugh out loud punchline.
Quirky, clever everything you want in a Talking Head album. The cover of Take me to the River is so good you think that it is a talking head song. I like the band a lot and this is a good example of why
Fun and summery. Good for walk to work, felt kinda nostalgic
Talking Heads has way better ones... it's okay
Love the nervous, anxious energy this album has. Not the best talking heads album but still great, opening and closing songs are amazing.
Not *their* best album, but nonetheless fantastic
I like it.
😂😂😂 this is so refreshing, absolutely groovy and weird record. David Byrne's vocal delivery is so original. The genre is totally new to me and I love it
I know Talking Heads but did not know this album, aside from Take Me To The River. This album is undeniably Talking Heads with their rhythmic sound and style. The album is very good. While none of the individual tracks stood out after the first listen, I would listen to the full album again for sure.
Dork rock, I like it
4/5
Great album. Not my absolute favorite talking heads albums but extremely good. Byrne's "alien anthropologist" lyrics are at an all time high on this one
It is not my favourite Talking Heads album, yet, I still have so many notable songs. Considering I own the majority of the Talking heads catalogue, i would certainly buy it if I came across it. it is a solid 4, probably a 4.5
Very good
I love the initial inaccessibility of this music. Angular, lyrically arcane, devoid of melody but intricately structured. I can hear Captain Beefheart, Sparks and Eno-era Roxy Music, all delivered with David Byrne’s energy and total commitment. I’ll be back to this one again.
This was pretty fun! It just seemed like an energetic, bright sound coming off this whole album. Its kinda funky and weird but overall enjoyable, the vocals were the only thing dragging this down for me.
Thank You for Sending Me an Angel // The Good Thing // Found a Job // Take Me to the River // The Big Country
Great record. So fun a danceable!
I always thought the Talking Heads were kind of irritating, but I really liked this album. Positive & poppy, there's some other influences in here. The rhythm provides a reliably steady foundation, allowing everything else to dance around a bit.
Very catchy and very Talking Heads, but I like that.
It’s Talking Heads! Not my favorite from them but it’s impossible for them to make an album that’s bad. Yeah, even the monkey album rules. This is like a 9/10.
With the exception of Take Me to the River, the Al Green cover, this is only one of Talking Head’s first 6 albums which doesn’t have what are widely regarded as “one of the big hits”, but it’s no worse for it. The band have sanded off what few rough edges they had on 1977 and have arrived in their most iconic form, in part due to much plusher production than on the debut. David Byrne is in a particularly hyperactive mood contrasting nicely with a smoother performance from the band. Throughout the record there are seamless transitions between wildly different sections. Everything is made to sound effortless.
I hadn’t heard any of these songs before (except Take Me to the River). Listening to this album gave me the feeling of listening to a very good underground indie rock album today. My favorite parts were the bass lines and the rhythm guitar and David Byrne’s voice. I liked it!
Four stars
Not the best talking heads but still good
I’ll get damned to hipster hell but the Talking Heads should not get as much hype as they get.
It's not bad, although I prefer their other album, "Fear of Music." Still, I will give it the same grade as the other album.
Jako dobro!
While some of the songs felt repetitive, it was full of intriguing lyrics
It's time, again, for my standard Talking Heads album review. Which goes like this: (1) I wish I liked them more than I do (2) I really like any of the tracks which also feature in "Stop Making Sense" (in this case "Thank you for sending me an angel," "The girl wants to be with the girls," "found a job," "Take me to the water," and "The Big Country"... There are quite a lot of them on this album.) (3) but the album tracks I'm not fussed about, which seems to indicate that "Stop Making Sense" is all the Talking Heads I need. Having said that, all the tracks on this album "have got a good beat" and I could leave it running without getting annoyed by it and I did really enjoy those Stop Making Sense tracks. So maybe it is better than most Talking Heads albums I've listened to so far! Or maybe I'm learning to like them after all!
Love the opening. See how much Paramore was influenced- guitar sound. Love the bass parts.
Not the best Talking Heads album but still pretty darn good.
it’s a talking heads album so like. of course it’s good
This is #day274 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… this must be the first band whose albums I get in the order they were released. I got Talking Heads: 77 a while ago (on #day26), and now here's the sophomore follow-up. I don't think I've ever listened to this one all the way through, so I have to admit that this challenge is a great way to catch up on music that's been postponed or overlooked. The album is a celebration of quirky guitars, funky rhythms, and the omnipresent David Byrne's charisma. It's also the first one produced by Brian Eno. Some of my favorites are "Found a Job," "Not in Love," and "Take Me to the River." This is a strong 4 out of 5. I'm sparing 5s for Fear of Music and Remain in Light. By the way, this list could've made room for the Stop Making Sense live album. Sadly, it doesn't. Looking forward to #day275.
I have heard plenty of these tracks before, but this was my first time really sitting down with the full album. It’s definitely one that grows on you. The quirky energy, tight rhythms, and David Byrne’s offbeat delivery start to click more with each listen. While it’s not a perfect record, but there’s no denying the charm and influence here. A strong entry in the Talking Heads catalog that rewards repeat listens, even if it doesn’t completely blow you away on the first spin.
Funny voice but i dig the vibes. Take me to this river again.
I liked this album, it was weird, but it has unique music and is good background. A little boring at times, and some sections are long instrumentals, and overall the vocals are quiet compared to the instruments, which I don't love. Doesn't deserve a 5 for me, but I liked it so I'll give it a 4.
Whilst not my favourite talking heads album, this is still a classic in my opinion. You can tell David Byrne is at the start of his music journey and discovering the character he will soon become. Fun listen today whilst driving in the sun, thanks for the recommendation
With its spare production highlighting Talking Heads’ driving rhythm section behind Byrne’s bellowing sprechstimme, this album answers the question: What if punk music was composed and performed by actual musicians?
Dreamy, hazy, weird album, kind of similar to The Voidz and late Bowie. The haziness makes it hard for me to decide how do I feel about the entire album, but it's probably a 3-4 range, maybe 5 if I were to get convinced after several more listens.
I liked this very much. Absolutely prototypical Talking Heads. Great album.
Seminal post-punk (for me at least). It's not perfect or life changing, but does feel groundbreaking. I really love some of the songs on this album, but I can't get over how little I like Take Me to the River.
Great album anything talking heads is so fun
Delightfully unhinged and pretentious
Not their best but they don't really have a bad album
Talking Heads! Was expecting to see them show up on this list sooner rather than later, though this wasn't the album which first came to mind. Love their music, though I'd say I'm much more familiar with their stuff post "Fear or Music". I've heard this album once or twice before, so I know what I'm getting into. Looking forward to a revisit. Thank You for Sending Me an Angel Has a really nice rhythm that seems to chug along nicely in the background. The rhythm guitar really moves the instrumental forward, while the percussion grounds it. David Byrne delivers a classic David Byrne performance, full of chaotic charm and distinct personality. Has a great tempo starting the album of with a bang. Great. 4.5/5 With Our Love The groove hits instantly with a strange and quirky tempo. Great bass playing. Love the instrumental break. Has me bobbing along. The vocals are really interesting, going from eclectic and weird to having harmonious and resonant moments that play well with the musical backdrop. Good. 4/5 The Good Thing Some classic warmth building up within the instrumental. A beautiful combination between melody and groove. Don't love the backing vocals on the chorus. I really like the more laid back, understated approach the vocals take on the verses. Really like how the lyrics are portrayed. The strange thought process that's presented is quite fascinating. Good. 4/5 Warning Sign Great opening bassline. I like that it takes its time to get started, slowly introducing the elements of the song. The vocals sound both confused and confrontational at the same time, there's even a hint of panic there. Love the guitar. Great. 4.5/5 The Girl Wants to be with the Girls The instrumental is once again very smooth and precise, statying very fresh with its ideas and putting in interesting parts where they need to. Love how much the keys get go shine here. The vocals are fine, though don't really add much. Decent. 3.5/5 Found a Job Great groove. Strange premise for a song, the story is however easy to follow. It's very matter of fact about it's ideas. Great dancable instrumental section, really closes out the song with a bang. Decent. 3.5/5 Artists Only A moodier vibe for the intro of this song. Again, lovely bassline, and excellent drumming. Carries the song. The quirky and outright wacky vocals contrasts to the almost mysterious nature of the instrumental. Feels cold and dark, love the tiny effects in the background. Whoever this painter is, the music paints a deranged picture of him. Great. 4.5/5 I'm Not in Love Explosive and intense. Really fun. The vocals build up quite well into the very groovy and dancable instrumental. The narrator struggling with his lack of romantic feelings is an interesting perspective. It never feels callous or cold, just different. The final instrumental break is a masterclass in rhythm and feel, absolutely infectious. Fantastic. 5/5 Stay Hungry Sounds great. The production on this track is really crisp. The constant repetition is kinda stressful. Love the funky guitar and bass on this track, they have great synergy. When the final vocals come in with that ethereal synth all the tension is released, sealing the song off on a beautiful note. Good. 4/5 Take Me to the River Really funky with that combination of bass and keys. Has that slightly awkward trademark Talking Heads attitude which adds a lot of charm to the track. It sounds like they're having a lot of fun injecting their own sound into the source material. Great. 4.5/5 The Bit Country Floaty and nostalgic sounding. Love how our expectations are subverted after the sugary first verse. Instrumentally a bit different from the rest of the album, the country influences are certainly unique for the rest of it. Lyrically it's an interesting view into the mind of David Byrne. His detatchment from the rest of society, yet recognizition of its workings is fascinating to hear put into words. Great. 4.5/5 An album with plenty of great concepts that they blend together uniquely through an unmistakingly imaginative style. Has this infectious awkward charm to it, and a strong artistic vision blooming with weirdness and percision. Love the grooves and rhythms, and the freedom which they play with. The eclectic vocals, and fascinating lyrics add both unpredictability and emotion to each track. Is just lacking that little subtle special something to put it into perfection territory, as I know that they're capable of evolving this sound and adding new influnces and styles to it. While this is great in its own right, their later works expand so much upon their talent adding new dimensions to their music that is hard to overlook. Feels like they limited themselves a bit on this album, though it shows early signs of the greatness that soon would follow. 4.5/5 leaning more towards 4/5. Fave track. I'm Not In Love Least fave track. Found a Job
Funky, but different for me. Enjoyed jt
Quirky and funky. Enjoyed
could i write poetry to this? y
Pretty good, some bangers, some songs I hadn't heard before.
I love it. The instrumental is amazing. The signer is not my favorite but it still works for what it is. Looking forward to analyse the album.
Feels like it was made by aliens who skimmed a “How To Be Human” manual and got really into rhythm, which is fun, because that's what I play (rhythm guitar). It’s quirky as hell and somehow still tight as fuck. It walks the line between awkward and brilliant. The guitar lines are all elbows and knees but land gracefully somehow. It's cool in a totally uncool way, somehow. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions: - Thank You for Sending Me an Angel - Found a Job - Take Me To The River - The Big Country
Classic.
To quote my dad when he found out my ex was a fan, "Talking Heads are a band of taste"
New wave done really, really well. Very catchy! Somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars I think.
For me this is the Talking Heads going through the gears. And arriving at the peak of their powers around the Remain in Light years. That said I did really enjoy revisiting this album and favourites include, warning sign.
I'm going to give this 4 only because it's Talking Heads, and I love their style. It's not nearly their best work, though.
Liked it! Need to listen more.
Thank you for sending me an angel is so good. Great album
Fantastic listen.
Solid
Weird album.
This record is great. I love talking heads, and I think this one is a bit slept on in their catalog. Super funky, weird and always very very cool. Maybe their best guitar record, bass lines from tina great and creative as usual. Good one
Take me to the river
They're so jilly jolly!!
Greaaaat album, I didn't quite catch when the songs changed hahah but a very good experience
Good album, not their best 4/5
This album makes me want to do some sassy dance moves 4/5
Best album so far, innovative and unique. Superb album
Love
Solid
I really liked The Big Country. Such a funny song. I should probably relisten to the whole thing, but it felt very repetitive in terms of their sound. It’s iconic, but I feel like my favorite albums have more dynamic landscapes.
Move a muscle move a muscle move a muscle
Early Talking Heads. Only "Take Me To the River" punched into the zeitgeist. Like I've noticed about some of the albums on this list, many of these artists are here because they "are themselves". They are mining the same ore as other pop-rockers but they've opened up their own vein in their own tunnel. "Good Thing" is the coolest non-hit on this record. Weird gang vocals that appear out of nowhere, jagged guitars, a bass part that ascends to its highest possible notes, Byrne's herky-jerky vocals, sometimes melodic, sometimes abrasive. "Stay Hungry" is the runner-up. I like how they take the analog delay of dub and throw it on the snare drum on "Warning Sign" for a song that is nothing like dub. With some washes of reversed-sounding effects as well, this is avante-pop, which in 1978 much have been something else. I hear Brian Eno was involved, so... Sometimes the approach doesn't work for me; "Girls" is just awkward filler. The only thing I like about "Found A Job" is the robot funk outro. And so on. It's not a perfect album, it's a little blurry at times, but when it comes into focus it's great!
4.0
Much more fun and loose than some of their other stuff. You can almost dance to some of it instead of just trying to be cool.
I like a good portion of Talking Heads songs and I like their whole vibe, but I don't think I like their music quite enough for a 5.

Enjoyable listening and certainly eclectic.
Found a job es otra. En Artist Only se ve la enorme similitud con The B-52´s, otra banda fundamental.
This is premium ass-shaking music 7.5/10 Fave track: With our love
One of the heavier Taking Heads albums I've heard. Groovin' in my seat for sure with Artists Only. Great record.
Yes. Like this one. I’m not in Love is currently my favorite track but I also liked Found a Job.
More Songs About Buildings and Food is the sound of a band sharpening their weirdness into something unexpectedly funky. It takes the jittery, anxious energy of their debut and injects it with more groove, more confidence, and—thanks to Brian Eno’s production—more sonic texture. David Byrne still sounds like a man having a nervous breakdown at a house party, but now he’s backed by a band that feels tighter, punchier, and more locked into rhythm. Tracks like Thank You for Sending Me an Angel and Artists Only are frantic, quirky post-punk gems, while The Good Thing and Stay Hungry show off a new level of polish and precision. And then, of course, there’s Take Me to the River, the band's unexpectedly soulful Al Green cover that somehow became their first hit. The brilliance of this album is in how it walks the line between art-rock oddness and something genuinely danceable. Tina Weymouth’s bass is groovier, the guitars are sharper, and the whole album has a kinetic, driving energy that keeps it from feeling as skeletal as their debut. That said, it still has that Talking Heads awkwardness—some songs feel more like rhythm experiments than fully fleshed-out tracks, and Byrne’s lyrics remain cryptic to the point of absurdity. But that’s part of the charm. While it doesn’t quite reach the legendary heights of what was to come, More Songs About Buildings and Food is a massive step forward—an album that proves Talking Heads weren’t just a quirky CBGB’s band, but something far more ambitious. It’s weird, groovy, and endlessly interesting, the first real sign that they were evolving into one of the most important bands of their era.
I only listned to Remain in Light before, which was kind of hard to me because i could never wrap my head around their music. however, this album made it a bit easier and it is a very fun album ngl, iliked a few songs, a bit goofy, id listen to it during different occasions :)). it was fun and i had a good time, its well made and consistent
One of the first albums I ever bought. Most bands suffer a sophomore slump, because a band's first album has material they've been crafting for years before recording, but they typically have very little time to come up with more material for the second album. Not so here. More quirky songs (indeed about buildings and food) with more elaborate production than Talking Heads 77 had. I'm a big fan of "The Big Country" (telling of David Byrne's fascination with American culture, which continues through his entire career), "Warning Sign" which foreshadows "Fear of Music" and "Found A Job." My only dislike is their cover of Al Green's "Take Me To The River," and only because radio stations played it to death. It's Talking Heads' "Stairway to Heaven."
I don’t know this TH album - a shame that luckily I can rectify. Delightfully quirky.
A number of songs I really enjoy here, with some also rans who don't quite rise to that level.
This is a new wave 70’s album that starts off with an absolute banger. The first song, Thank You for Sending Me an Angel is an absolute tune, what a way to begin the album. It’s an incredibly danceable album, in keeping with that iconic Talking Heads sound. It’s energetic, vibrant and unique. The drumming felt more complex than any other Talking Heads song I’ve heard. The album sounds pristine and polished, Brian Eno did a great job at helping the band create a cohesive and clear sound that runs throughout the album. I particularly love David Byrne’s voice, it’s like nothing I’ve heard before. The flow between the songs felt clean. That being said, this is my first Talking Heads album and I’m hesitant at the moment to give it any more than a three when I know later albums have This Must Be The Place and Once in a Lifetime, which I’m excited to get to. It feels like I’d be jumping the gun a little too quickly. This could change and I could end up going back to this album and giving it a four star, which I originally wanted to give it but as I currently have no other Talking Heads album to compare it to, I’ll keep it at a three for now. UPDATE: Decided to give it four after a further listen.
great album, probably my least listened to of the main talking heads albums. Highlights include: “Thank You for Sending Me and Angel” “With Our Love” “Warning Sign” “Found a Job” “Artists Only” “The Big Country”
Good, just what I was expecting.
Great to listen to an early album from one of my favourite bands. I think "Take Me to the River" has gotten faster in subsequent performances.
8/10
My favourite Talking Heads song about building and food (Nothing but flowers) is 10 years after this song but I love them all the same! ❤️
Yes
Good listen. Know a handful of songs from this band. After listening to this album I know where all the indie bands from the last couple decades have been cribbing from. Lots of good sounds and grooves
Love old school TH. This one has a few real gems on it.
While I prefer “Remain in Light”, this album is a good representation of early Talking Heads music.
I accurately assessed that this was an early project for the Talking Heads. I thought that this was pretty good. Less adventurous than their next project but super consistent and catchy. I think that this is where Talking heads shines. Where you get into the groove and you stay there. Take me to the River stood out to me.
I liked the second half of this album. The songs up until “Found a Job” were definitely Talking Heads songs but they didn’t grab me until that one; after that it became much more enjoyable and less repetitive. “Artists Only” is my favorite but I do like the tempo changes in “I’m Not In Love” and it’s that tempo change that really makes the whole back half good. This isn’t really a 5 for me just due to the beginning of it. The rest of it is a good journey through several genres that was a fun listen, like they always seem to be.
This was my least favorite of our three Talking Heads albums. By no means was this bad, it just didn't land as well. Enjoyable listen.
I enjoyed this one overall, ran it back immediately to listen twice. Solid album front to back.
I have only recently discovered the joys of Talking Heads thanks to a work colleague. While this isn’t their best album in my opinion it’s still great. Love it.
Great opening track. The Big Country is one of their best. Solid from start to finish. Some songs too similar?
More songs about buildings and food is one of many great talking heads album, wich unfortunately gets overshadowed by the band's most acclaimed records. However I dont feel like this album is worth less than than their most popular records: unique, catchy and solid. Absolutely underrated
Never been a big fan of David brynes voice. But my god the guitar sections.
Very catchy, danceable, and some incredibly playful words. The basslines are intoxicating , the riffs and drums are amazingly groovy. Oh, don't forget the fcking vocals, so unique.
Dito isso, gostei de With Our Love, Warning Sign, Found a Job, I'm Not in Love e The Big Country.
7,5/10 Highlights Thanks for sending me an angel Take me to the river With our love Found a job
A very charming and uplifting álbum
the most normal talking heads album, which is to say that it is not their best and not their most interesting, but still is tasty and has a banger or two
Fun and groovy. My favorite song is Found a Job
