Idk if I can appreciate jazz when it’s not live
Sultry music for the end of the world…?
I felt like I was teleported into fallout. I did enjoy this, but can’t give it more than a 3 because of the precedent from the rest of the list.
I love a good big band. It's such a classic sound that you can't really get nowadays. I can't tell you how this band differs from others, but I still enjoyed it regardless.
this can only have been the hardest album cover of its time
Big band stuff. Meh.
This sounds and looks like jazz but doesn't feel like jazz. This feels like ballroom jazz or something. When I close my eyes I'm walking through an overpriced antique mall. Needs more soul. I did like the sax solos though.
More instrumental jazz music. yay. They are obviously talented musicians, and it's so old-timey that it really takes you back to a totally different era. So that's neat. I want to FEEL jazz more though, I want it to move me and shake me and bop me. And for some reason, most of it just doesn't. I appreciate the vibes here, but it continues to feel like music I might put on in the background of a hipster happy hour, and not something that works its way into my soul.
While I can very much appreciate this actual effort, I am in no way justified in evaluating it.
Pleasant enough listen. A couple of standout tracks. Probably would never choose to relisten to the album, but there are certain songs I’d revisit. 3/5
Enjoyed this. Album cover is almost comical compared to the music. Nice listen. Nothing spectacular, but good. 3/5 Might listen again
Unending energy and atmosphere! For a release from 1958 this felt very original and authentic, trailblazing even. Taking into account also the fact that this was probably one of the first Big Band/Swing albums to release, I was very impressed. It almost got a bit generic and uninteresting towards the end but saved itself with some melodies and a calm finale.
Solid classic sound
Typ Flintstone-jazz, rätt go att ha i bakgrunden, kan tänka mig jobba, städa, laga mat till detta, men det var nog ingen låt som stack ut som ett guldkorn för mig
Not my preferred cup of tea but listenable. Has some nice very interesting songs. One of those albums that I will have to be in the mood for to play it again.
I'm not sure I'd ever like, sit back and absorb it the way I do latter jazz greats, but this is the kind of thing you can put on and absolutely no one will be mad at you, and that is increasingly valuable in these trying times.
what a treat to listen to the music my grandparents definitely fucked to.
No denying the musical excellence of this album. Very pleasant to have on in the background. Not something I would actively seek to listen to, but a nice record.
Jazzy big band sound. Disturbing cover.
Album cover is hard AF. Even the E = MC^2 bit at the bottom is clever. Jumping out of the gate on The Kid from Red Bank. Sure is a swell bopper -- sounds like the bassist is working up a sweat climbing up and down the ladder. Splanky is a familiar one though I couldn't say where from. This was solid front to back, but not something I'm going to come back for again and again. I'd say for what it is it is really good. But for me in that category I top out at a high 3.
Looking at this album cover I was expecting some noise rock or some avantgarde punk bs (think Captain Beefheart and The Magic Trout or whatever). One could argue that this is nearly the opposite. Nice set morning diddies while getting some work done. Short and sweet. Somewhere in the high 3 realm. Could feasibly see this as a 4, but I don't think I'll grab this one again.
Incredible album cover on this one. Learned of Count Basie in a jazz class I took my Sophmore year of college which was really fun. This sounds like most swing music I remember listening to in that class. Definitely cool to listen to this old jazz but doesn't really get things going for me
This is not what I was expecting to hear from the album cover. Seems pretty hardcore for an album in the 50's. Some pretty relaxing big band. Nothing crazy but solid background work music.
3 a bit of big band Jazz rarely comes amiss
The faster paced songs like the opening track were great The rest of the songs dropped off, becoming the sort of café shop background music a lot of jazz and swing is
Fun. I liked it.
Alright yeah
Felt nice and powerful for big band music. Enjoyed as background.
Big band jazz is not my favourite kind of jazz but the Count is the master I really thought this was a good listen.
Swing!
Not my style
Big band music will probably never really speak to me, but this one got me boppin my head a bit in the car. Gotta give it credit for that.
foot tapping good not my usual type of music
I don't get Jazz on an emotional level so I'm not gonna rate this at all. Technically perfect but not for me…
I like some of these tracks and know them well, and you can see some effort has been made to sell it as cohesive album, but for me this is still stuck with the 50s problem of no flow or rhythm to the tracks assembled.
Ok, so this is very evocative of a certain time. Conjures up black and white moves, Some Like It Hot etc. While I recognise they are very talented and top of their genre this is not something I would ever choose to listen to, it gets a bit boring for me, may prefer some with vocals. Also, the up tempo tracks are more appealing
Pretty smooth jazz...
沒有發現特別驚喜地方,舒服的專輯。
Good classical
Of course, this album is full of great compositions and great playing, but big band just isn't my style. It's not bad, so I can't give it below a 3, but I also will never listen to it again, so I can't give it above that. :)
Swingy!
The final 1001 album at least for me. Big Band Jazz. OK.
Nice big-band music, after some time it gets on the nerves.
Sounds like a game show band. That is not a bad thing.
Enjoyed
fun jazz record, still think I can only really appreciate the genre fully when it's performed live
Objectively, I think it's great, but it's just not something I would ever really get the urge to sit down and listen too. Apologies in advance for the jazz nerds out there. 3.5 stars.
3.5
As Louis Balfour on the Fast Show would say, “…Nice!”
Entertaining but a bit samey throughout.
-not the most thrilling listen of my life but this is really pleasant. I love getting to listen to early big band and recorded jazz, I don’t think I would’ve ever listened to something this early on in recorded music if not through this website -Favorites are Double-O and Lil’ Darlin’
Great break from rock and roll into some solid big band Jazz. A wonderful playlist for a quick study session or throwing on a suit
Solid jazz album. Big band breaking new ground I guess.
I was excited to get this one, but soon realized that as much as I enjoy jazz, I don’t dig the big band stuff so much.
Decent listen but not something I would return to.
Lovely on a Sunday!!
It's a nice change from the terrible post punk that I seem to be getting recently, but it's hard to get into a groove with this album as the tempo and tone is all over the place though. I would have liked a moody album and then more of a lounge album, but I don't know. Maybe that's how people listened to albums once upon a time?
3.5 some good ol jazz
Скучный джаз
I have thoughts about jazz. How it is joining classical music as a genre that is used for meticulous study. It sucks the fun out of a genre that is meant to be about fun and freedom. I was subjected to this. The teachers were archetypical sticks in the mud who would sigh at their students not being like their favorite jazz musicians. Now that I have explained my bias: The music is fun, vibrant and manages to capture images beyond what would require spoken word. Situational, but undeniably good
This was a lot of fun
Perfectly adequate swing music. I will not be listening again.
#385. This sounds like something from a Tom & Jerry cartoon. Or maybe something that would be playing in the vaults in Fallout. 3/5: silly
Average
I don't know how to feel, I liked the sound but it doesn't seem that interesting or nuanced.
3/5
I know next to nothing about swing or big band, but this is a fun, up-beat thing to listen to.
I liked the piano but am not really a fan of the big band sound. Favorite song was: 11. Lil' Darlin' 5/10
Not my style of music but it was entertaining and musically complex
theres not much to say. its nice jazzy music. solid but i dont feel much.
3/5
Good
Liked the last song ‘lil darling’. It’s warm and comforting. Great song to reset to. Soothing textures and depth of bass on the sax.
This isn't really my style of jazz, and I don't think the compositions hold up among the jazz greats, but you can't deny that this is an amazing group of musicians at the top of their game.
Usual upbeat jazz from the 50s it sounds like.
Big Band / Swing is not a big interest of mine but found this pleasant enough while working.
This made the voices go away. Jazzy.
Very good big band sound in its time.
It’s a really strong and sophisticated big band swing album but there’s not really any stand out tunes (other than maybe Splanky) or ridiculously good solos to elevate it to a higher level
I enjoyed this but I don't know that I would listen to it again, on purpose. I feel like I should be baking a cake and smoking a cigarette lol. Or a character on Mad Men!
This album was nice to listen to, but thing really stood out to me. Pleasant, but I think there’s much better jazz and swing out there. I would have been just fine if I died having not listened to this album. Still good though.
I thought it was pretty enjoyable even though ive never really listened to this genre. fav: the kid from red bank. Least:after supper
This is like the 5th 50's Jazz album that we have seen on this list. It's not bad music, some of it is even worth revisiting and I enjoyed some of these tracks. but not my normal day-to-day. I'm sure there is some significance to Count Basie, but it didn't fall on a day when I had a ton of time to dig into him.
Pretty typical big band stuff
Good syncopated jazz
Me ha gustado bastante
Escucharlo en la calle con mucha gente suma puntos, el album del al que pertenece está muy bien
Started off strong but lost me little less than half way through. Thought it be more of a Jazz album but seemed more into the BIG BAND style Standout tracks were - After Supper, Teddy the Toad (great melody) , Midnite Blue was decent and the album ends on a great note with Lil’ Darlin’ which is beautiful and you could sing over the instrumental Least fav was Double O and Splanky (was almost falling asleep in my car ) Some of the songs seemed to remind me of background music in Adam West Batman. When it comes to “Jazz” I like things to be either more adventurous or really smooth ballads. This as said before leans more into big band and swing. Overall probably a 3/5 (leaning more towards a 2.5 personally, but for what it is can see it being a classic album and a 4 or 5 for certain people )
I love the swing of this album, the third track was my favourite
il jazz è sempre un genere mega affascinante, ma mi piace di più quando sconfina in altri generi come la samba o il blues. comunque un piacevolissimo ascolto e come sottofondo è perfetto.
Fav: The King From Red Bank Least Fav: After Supper
- feels like listening to music that would go with b/w popeye or tom and jerry - not sure i like the more upbeat songs, more of a fan of slower piano/sax notes - fav: after supper
I know nothing about classical music but this was just fine to me.
Sorry for being uncultured but I tend to dislike jazz. I get bored with it oh so quickly and then I have to sit through the whole thing, it doesn’t help that jazz is usually so unbelievably long. I didn’t have that problem with this one. It was very easy to get through and surprisingly fun and although it isn’t my thing I can appreciate it for what it is
A pretty fun album, I enjoyed the upbeat songs. However, it does get a little samey as it goes on. Very Fallout-core music. high 3
its music
My wife loves Count Basie. I'm a bit of a Jazz-head myself, but this is not my favorite style. Namely the Big Band elements. I favor Jazz that focuses on a few select ingredients rather than a whole stew of instruments. There are some nice, stripped back Bop tracks on this, but there is a lot of Big Band that I could give or take. It's a pleasant listen, but not my style. That said, for 1958 that cover goes hard. Holy.
stars are, sleeping in counting, twice per beat
While recognizing it's merits & skill required, I talk a lot of shit about big band music. It's just not appealing to me in terms of jazz as I favor smaller combos and find the ever-punctuating bombastic blast of horns to be an overwhelming wall of sound that undercuts the individual talents and improvisational interplay that I usually gravitate towards. This one is wildly appealing though, dialing back a lot of those sensibilities and highlighting a more spacious approach. Being familiar with some of Basie's other works, this one had slipped under the radar and I'd gladly revisit it. Ballsy album cover for the era as well, damn bro, respect for the bold statements all around.
Solid album to be sure.
To me, Count Basie’s music feels like simply background jazz that needs vocals to complete it. Which isn’t fair to Basie, because his sound defined 40’s and 50’s jazz before the Bebop era. 3/5 for the history, but not an album I’ll be returning to.
Big band swing music. Good listen. Not sure when I'd choose to put it on again 3.5
Love big band but this is only 'good.'
pleasant! if more anonymous than that fucking cover suggests 6/10
Great for a bit of background Jazz, not sure that I'd enjoy it for anything more
This album is full of instrumental jazz music. I found it to be somewhat enjoyable.
I suppose the reason there are no real big bands anymore was because these guys mastered it. Also, it just feels old, but it should. Great background ambience.
3.5
Jazz album, funny but not great. The piano very poorly deployed. I like a more involved piano, not only random melodic patterns with one hand.
Cool album cover, with some (in my opinion) pretty generic, but sweet, jazz. Don't feel like I have the skills to determine what differentiates this from other similar albums. I liked it, but it doesn't feel like anything special to me.
Wear a tuxedo Dance in a black and white film Be classy, have fun
Paul drive fast to swing music
A very nice instrumental album
nice background music
I could get behind this. It's Friday afternoon. Soon it'll be cocktail hour. I don't know much about jazz but this is ok. I'd listen again, but not on purpose. Three swinging stars.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
Worth knowing better
Now.. This is music where someone actually plays and just enjoys the experience. We are left with a weird combination as listeners though. Duet wants me to just walk along an LA concrete foot path.. 3 songs in and I feel like I'm eating breakfast at a cheap hotel.
I am not the biggest fan of this genre of music, but I will be doing my best to give it, it’s fair shake. The song “splanky” was excellent. The other songs on the albums were good, but again this genre is not something I listen to any of at all.
Nostalgic
Good jazz! Not too mental! Expected extreme drum and bass based on the cover. I was NOT disappointed! 3.4
One of the most accessible jazz albums I’ve ever listened to.
Surprised how easy this was to listen to for background at work. Normally would throw this kind of thing a 1 and move on but this was different somehow. Might even listen to it again when chilling at home.
Bueno
So this one is a little hard to rate for me. It mostly settled into background music for me BUT I was enjoying listening to it. I think this is a fun sound, though not one I am all that familiar with. I can't really pick out particular songs I like at this stage, but I would give this a second listen for sure!
Swing music is one of those genres I have plenty of appreciation but little excitement for. This album doesn’t really contradict that opinion, but it’s certainly worthy and well-performed.
nice enjoyable 3/5
I like it, won't ever be in heavy rotation, but another remember this on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
My new fallout soundtrack
Bruce Elder on allmusic.com writes of this album that "it took Basie's core audience and a lot of other people by surprise, as a bold, forward-looking statement within the context of a big-band recording." I remember when Bruce used write record reviews for the Sydney Morning Herald, so there you go. Quality became ubiquity, and has diminished the surprise and boldness of this album. This album may have been a bold, new statement in 1958, but it has become so much of the cultural landscape that I often felt like I was listening to a Top Cat cartoon. It's not Count Basie's fault that he so successfully defined what to do with a big band that it became one of the dominant orchestral sounds of the 20th century. It's an energetic up-tempo listen, with some flashy soloing and a huge sound. My 19 year old son, Hal, has developed a love of jazz, and especially big bands of the 60s and early 70s. I can hear the influence of this album in the records he collects and plays. He _loves_ big horn section, and this rally is gold standard in that style.
I really enjoyed this but nothing really stood out – it sounded like Count Basie with the piano and horns but it made me realise how hard big band and bebop bass players work. Eddie Jones is non-stop and really underpins the entire album. Great mix. Having said that, I wonder how many people will remember Basie, as opposed to Ellington, or Petersen, or Shaw or Miller?
It's decent, I enjoyed it
ten typowy jazz z dawnych lat, nie odroznilbym od innych utworow, ale nie jest irytujacy
That was an overall nice discovery, even though it's not my favorite genre.
pretty nice swing
Een piano virtuoos, fifties swing jazz. Cool, maar ik raak er na een tijdje wel op uit gekeken.
I enjoyed many of the tracks, but in the end it just didn’t leave much of an impression on me. None of the tracks were “bad,” and it's not even the worst work of Count Basis, but a lot of it just seemed forgettable to me.
Is The Atomic Mr. Basie a good jazz record? Sure! It’s extremely traditional, especially in retrospect, but not as traditional as you’d expect. When you hear the term “big band,” your mind conjures up a very specific sound, and I would say the majority of this album is not playing within the parameters of that sound. A lot of it is a lot more low-key, melodic, lounge-esque, even. I think you either like that aesthetic in jazz or you don’t, and I typically don’t, but I still see its value. There are some bop elements to keep the attention of modern ears, though, especially in how the horns are played. Actually, I think it’s that piece that earned this album a spot in the book in the first place. And Basie’s piano playing is pretty engaging, if you like that kind of thing, but that’s not unique to this record. But is this an essential jazz album, especially from this era? Honestly, no. Jazz is a hard genre to get into because it lacks a clear hook 90% of the time, but there are a 1,000,001 memorable jazz songs, and albums filled with jazz cuts that get stuck in your head for day. Basie has some examples himself! But unfortunately, while The Atomic is good and seems to be a noteworthy example of jazz while it was transitioning sounds, this album contains zero stand-out, flat-out, stuck-in-your-head-for-days jazz cuts. Even at its best. That isn’t to say it’s bad, because it isn’t, but it never really shines, either. Which is fine if you’re just bouncing around listening to jazz albums you pulled out of the bin, but that is far from a standing ovation or strong recommendation. If some of these songs – especially cuts on Side B – came on my Spotify shuffle, I wouldn’t hit skip (especially if I’m in the mood for jazz, which is why they’d be on my shuffle list in the first place). But I doubt that I will ever revisit this album in full ever again after today. Maybe another Basie would have been a smarter choice.
Nice jazzy instrumental. Solid background music.
Nice mix of exciting, high energy jazz ensembles and slower tracks. I'm not too familiar with jazz / orchestral music so I cannot compare it to other albums in the genre, but I can say I enjoyed the album. It's a nice album for passive listening while focusing on other tasks. Some of the higher energy songs had me envisioning animations and cartoons to accompany them. Oh, and I really like the album cover. It's great.
not bad, pretty cool tunes probably a 3/5 maybe even a 4 definitely a banger
This was fun, you can see how it’s the bridge between big band and rock and roll. Enjoyable listen.
If I wanted to listen to an hour of instrumental jazz, this is probably the album I’d listen to. Unfortunately I don’t think I’d want to listen to an hour of instrumental jazz very often.
A nice listen. This is definitely the oldest one so far (and obviously so). It was exactly what I needed today, too (I was too stressed for lyrics). The big-band really lifted my spirits. :)
Great example of big band music, and the blurry lines between that and the more accessible side of jazz. I liked it, especially the drumming, and appreciate its place on the genre, but not sure how deep down the rabbit hole I feel the need to venture. I loved the cover art though - but not sure it would pass the legal dept. nowadays!
I enjoyed this. It was a nice palette cleanser, definitely music that I'm not very familiar with and it was a nice little head bopping background music soundtrack to my day. I'll give it a 3. At one point I was trying to look at it as objectively as possible, and as the musicians are obviously very talented, I wondered if it didnt deserve 4 stars. Then as I continued listening I felt like it was just a very long album. When I checked, I had blown past the album by 4-5 songs and hadn't noticed. So while I'm sure that these people are fantastic artists, the reality is that they're not *so* good that I could differentiate their sound from the next 5 artists that popped up. Ultimately, then, it was a pleasant little aside, and a happy 3 stars.
I have never listened to a lot of jazz, but I've decided to give this a shot. It was nice, but not something I would listen to regularly. At times, I felt like I was in a really fancy restaurant, or watching a soap opera about the 20's, or in a Pink Panther episode. I'd listen to it again while drinking a nice bottle of wine, since it wasn't bad at all, but not something to listen to frequently.
Enjoyed it, but wouldn’t choose to play it
I enjoy big band music but it all starts to sound the same to me after a while, especially since I listen at work so I'm not usually paying full attention to it.
Soundtrack from fallout
Cuphead soundtrack be like
Pretty cool
I don't really know why but it wasn't what I was expecting - it wasn't bad tho
1. red bank - 1.5 2. duet - 1.5 3. zupper - 1 4. foo birdz - 1.5 5. double - 1.5 6. teddy - 1 7. bird - 1.5 8. blue - 1.5 9. zplanky - 1 10. fantail - 1.5 11. darling - 2
This album was okay. It's decent background music, but I'm not that into big band/old Hollywood jazz stuff. Would be kind of fun to listen to while cleaning or something, but I wouldn't go out of my way to hear it.
The cover of the album (an atomic bomb) does not indicate the content, which is a big-band style orchestra (without singing).
It was fun swing/big band. Not bad but not super memorable.
Favourite song - Teddy the toad
The music the hip kids listened to the year I was born. I should listen to this every year on my birthday. I like this! Time travel music. 3 stars no problem.
Итс олрайт. Лучшая песня - Lil' Darlin'.
Pretty cool. Pretty samey.
All I hear is the Family Guy theme song over and over again. I guess its OK and really good clean musicians but not my thing. Did enjoyed it for a few songs until they all became too similar.
Didn't listen through it all the way through admittedly. I do like the sound, but couldn't tell you anything in particular from an individual song
Enjoyed this album
High energy big band stuff and easy going mellow stuff. I don't care for much big bands but this is good. It came out in 1958 so that probably helps. I like this quite a bit actually.
Fun, jazzy tunes. Probably not something I’ll spend much time with but maybe one to listen to on a Sunday
Good stuff. All I pictured with this music was the Naked Gun collection of movies. “Interesting” album cover.
Good background music and cool album cover for an album from the 50s Rating: 3.4
Big band, swing. This album was pretty good, lots of energy and very dense. There were some really exciting songs, some ok songs, and some pretty forgettable songs, so it was a mixed experience. But I did have fun listening. Lots of cool solos and what I would guess were some improvisational bits. I don't really know what to say other than that, it was just fun to listen to but I wasn't very engaged. Maybe I still just don't get the genres yet, maybe it's just not quite for me. It was evident that everyone in the album had fun and were playing their hearts out. The album was fun for me as well, so I guess it does its job. Won't revisit, but I did like it. 3/5
Fun album Standout Songs: The Kid from Red Bank Flight of the Foo Birds
Pretty good swing album with a misleading cover. Pretty bold of him to have an atomic explosion on the cover post WW2 and during the red scare. The music was interesting with good playing. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen.
Good swing music, reminds me of Fallout.
Not bad. Not particularly engaging for me.
Fun, instrumental swing. Nothing mind-blowing but I enjoyed it quite a bit throughout.
I listened to this because Joe “I cook da pizza” Dosch said it was his favorite jazz albums. I definitely enjoyed it but I feel like there is a ceiling for albums like this. I can’t appreciate the sax parts as much as other people
Think this I liked this less than I should have bc I was incredibly hangry while this was playing. The sound of the music was good, sound of my stomach growling-not so good. Enjoyed it like a 6/10
Enjoyable listen while sitting in traffic on my way to work, very fun record.
Hearing the first notes of this record felt really refreshing after so many rock records. I prefer laid back, spare jazz to the Big Band feel. Unfortunately on this record you find mainly the second. Sometimes you hear some creaking from the players themselves or the surrounding what let me take off my headphones quiet often, to check if someone was entering the shared flat I live in. It made the record more intimate and gave me the feeling of sitting next to the musicians.
Not much to say here fun listen
This was fun
Ladies, better hide your mans Cigar boxes, cause Count Basie is coming to town. I wish I had a boujee rich setup where I could play poker smoking to this album, because it only seems fitting. I’ve really grown a liking to Jazz and Soul lately, so I very much appreciated this one- just chilled out vibes
Turns out I can't stand jazz
Cool.
Smooth and relaxed. Big band is the best kind of jazz.
that was fun
Swing, agradable.
This is nice, I like count basie. 68/100
Top notch musicians - but the style is not for me
Fun. Although kind of bonkers album art. In high school I played trombone in jazz band so I felt very much at ease listening to this. If you like this album then I recommend you also check out the album Sinatra At The Sands where Basie and his orchestra are Frank’s backing band.
Pretty good! A solid kinda classic jazz album, maybe it didn’t move me the way other jazz albums do, but it was lots of fun!
I was excited for this one, but it left me wanting.
A pleasant listen!
Very good work/study music
Not an unpleasant album by any means. I did feel like I was in a classic sleuthing movie at times. That is not a terrible vibe but its not one I seek out very often. 3.5/5
I recognise that it's great for it's time, however it is a genre I am not quite qualified to speak on. Nice listening though, and that's what matters, isn't it?
This piece was long but had a lot of musical gems mixed into the runtime , I really liked the blend of traditional romantic chord progressions intermixed with the predominantly bebop Jazz inspired record
This was nice! In context with some of our more recent music... it sounds like it was made by people on a completely different planet than the music just 10 years later. Obviously, this was well on its way out even in 1958, but… still! I think I still can’t quite comprehend how radical the shift in music was in those 10 years. At some point, I recognized track 2 again, and had this moment of wait– have I just been repeating track 2 over and over? Let me get onto track 3! And then I realized that I had listened all the way through the album, and had almost no recollection of the other tracks. It was pleasant though! Nice palette cleanser, given the recent ones I've been working through. 3/5
Atomic!
Definitely a good listen - didn't grab me as much as one of the Miles Davis albums that we've had, but elevated above most of the other jazz that we've had so far. Agree that it's better when its pacier, which it too often isn't really. Think it's a high 3/5 rather than anything more.
I can see how this is described as the pinnacle of swing/big band. It seemed like they had thrown everything this music stood for into one album. The quality is obvious to see and it deserves it's place here. It's an interesting stepping stone on the progression of music and I'm glad I'm listened but it's not going to feature in regular rotation.
Enjoyed it. Generally I much prefer a smaller jazz combo to a big band, particularly from the 50s & 60s, but refreshing to step away from the country-rock for a minute.
Probably doesn't come off as explosive as the cover would suggest nowadays, but this is a good time! Just hard for an entirely instrumental jazz album to stand out as a must-listen for me personally unless it does something really unique.
That's pretty good! 7/10
Just straight jazz, no filler but nothing extraordinary OTHER than the fact this was from the 50’s! Feels a bit more contemporary which is cool. 2.8
Jazzy. But jazz is more fun with a big(ish) band than some dude meandering away on a piano with equally aimless bass accompaniment. A little short of “atomic” in my book, but not hard to listen to.
I liked it. I like big band jazz way better than the smaller scale style. Again, wish there were 1/2 stars. This would be 3.5 for me.
Sounds fine I guess. I don’t really listen to this type of music.
While big band music from the 50s is not a genre I gravitate toward, I dug the smoothness and swagger that The Atomic Mr. Basie provided throughout its 40-minute runtime. I could absolutely see myself pairing this album with a perfectly made martini. Bonus points for: 1) Song titles like "Flight of the Foo Birds," "Whirly-Bird," and--my personal favorite--"Splanky," as well as 2) an eye-catching cover, something fairly unusual for this genre of music in 1958. Interesting Factoids from Wikipedia: *The album won Best Jazz Performance, Group and Best Performance by a Dance Band awards at the 1st Annual Grammy Awards (May 4, 1959). *(Count Basie) led (the Count Basie Orchestra) for almost 50 years, creating innovations like the use of two "split" tenor saxophones, emphasizing the rhythm section, riffing with a big band, using arrangers to broaden their sound, and others. *Neal Hefti (who co-arranged the album alongside the CBO) went on to write music for The Odd Couple movie and TV series and for the Batman TV series. Standout Tracks: The Kid From Red Bank, Flight of the Foo Birds, Whirly-Bird, Splanky
Pleasant orchestral jazz, could be a looney tunes soundtrack. Stand-out: Teddy the Toad
Glad I got to hear it but not my kind of thing. I'll give it a 3 because it was actually great background music for cleaning the house
Pretty fun. Strong opener!
This album is a (nuclear) blast!
I don't like jazz, but this was actually kind of fun. I was imagining young people dancing to this in 1958. Not bad, but still not something I would normally listen to nor will I listen to it again.
6.2/10 Couples saves which is great. Loved listening to this. Not my favorite style but it’s unique. A lot of dynamic jazz which is fun to listen to and broaden my musical horizons
This was good just not my cup of tea
I'm not familiar with Count Basie's music, or this album, but I thought this was fine to listen to. I don't know much about swing, big band, or jazz music, so it's hard for me to come up with anything objective to say about this album. I enjoyed the more piano forward sound of the first song, but the rest of the album didn't really rely on that sound, which was kind of a bummer, because I thought this might be the first jazz-ish album that I was going to really have a strong love for. The album turned out to be fine, but there just wasn't anything noteworthy about it for me.
I don't mind Big Band stuff. The slower stuff gets a little boring for me, the swingier up tempo stuff is better.
Don’t really like jazz but my ears were pleased
Fine listen, just not my thing.
first listen it's good but short and doesn't break the mold which may be unfair because it is the mold?
They're popping, but not really my style.
Lyssnade inte
This was a decent listen. I’m not huge into big band, so it was just going as I was doing other stuff.
FALLOUT!!!! I LOVE BIG BAND MUSIC
It's good music, it really is, I'm just not overly impressed by any of it. There are jazz albums from around this time period that I connect with and enjoy much more. But it's not bad.
This was something different for me, I’ve never really heard much of this type of music outside of old movies. It was great, not something I’d sit down and listen to much, but it is terrific background music that kind of transports me back to the 1950’s seen in movies.
rlly good!! i loved the quick riffs 3.5/5
jazzy; fun!
Really enjoyed the big band, hard to rank it by comparison with everything else
Clever jazz, but not really to my liking as far as jazz goes.
Look doctor, my skull won't stop moving back and forth!
Talented jazz musicians, but not necessarily my cup of tea.

This album cover is NOT what I expected the accompanying music to sound like, lol! Otherwise, I like the electric energy of the orchestra. Very playful. A good 'ole time. If I was to host a swanky academic party, I might put this on as people got their drinks?
A solid album! It is just jazz, but it's good jazz, made time fly while working. It isn't an album I'll listen to very often, but it's good background music, very well put together! High recommendation for folks who enjoys listening to a lot of jazz music.
3.1/5 Best Track: Splanky
It's a classic of the big band era. Not my listening favorite
Þetta var alvöru old school. Gat alveg unnið við þetta. Múvaði mann alveg smá. Tónlist var svo töff eitthvað á þessum tíma.
Skemmtilegt. Magnað plötuumslag.
Definitely has a dated feel, but in a good, nostalgic way.
An enjoyable listen. Powerful album cover!
Favourite Song: Duet Hard to pick a favourite song within Jazz, as usually the overall album sound can feel samey. An enjoyable, hot jazz album with a lovely energy that does end on a mellow tone.
So energetic bombastic atomic even! Liked this!
A lot of these songs had familiar, predictable riffs. Much more up-beat than what you’d hear in a Panera.
Absolutely top notch jazz, a big band sound with improv front and center. It's almost impossible to go higher than this without vocals. Deepest respect for Basie ❤️
It's good, but samey. It doesn't help that the bonus tracks are some of the same songs. Favorite song: double-O.
Блин, это же прям звучит как основа для музыки, которую я так или иначе в жизни слушал. Прикольное. Подходит для танцев с котом
It sounded very nice.
Not a fan of Jazz but this was pretty good. Also crazy that this is from 1958.
Nostalgic, transports you to another time :)
I don’t know much about big band music but it was good to listen to something a little different
Jazz not really my bag but enjoyable nontheless
Some easy Monday morning listening. Old af. The jazz 3.
Jazz, Swing, Big Band 1958 Not something I'd listen to often.... 5/5: 4/5: The Kid from Red Bank, Duet, Whirly Bird, Lil' Darlin' Rating: 3.5
Not usually my preferred style of Jazz but this was actually quite good. I enjoyed the "swing" vibe to it. I also enjoyed that it seems like every instrument has a time to shine on each song respectively. The album is on the shorter side and makes it very digestible. 3.5 stars
I didn’t hate this. I felt something while I listened. A lot of the time it was irritation but some of the time it was anything but. I really don’t get on with jazz but this was an album I would have been sad never to hear. Some of it made me feel like I was a gunshot detective, on the trail of gangsters, some took me to some underground speakeasy cloudy with smoke. I felt like getting shit done sometimes as I listened. Basically, it was very good. I miiiight just return.
interesting album, very strong start, it got me absolutely pumped. But it dropped off a bit and all kind of became a blur. Felt like a lot of (very good) singles rather than a solid album.
Different from my usual music taste but I definitely would want to listen more into the genre.
This is intense for 1958.
Jazz
Probably good for it’s time. Not what I’m trying to listen to today
Great background soundtrack while working. Doesn't make me wanna go and listen to it again though.
I expected to like this. I like jazz and my younger brother is a jazz musician but I sort of nothinged this album it wasn't bad but wasn't good. Just ok background music
Enjoyable big band swing jazz from Count Basie, with a hat tip to Neal Hefti for the arrangements who later went on to write the amazing Batman TV series theme music. There are some nice quirky elements, with whistling and an unusual twanging sort of noise which turned out to be a mouth harp in the background.
Very enjoyable, but nothing revolutionary.
It was nice but I wasn't in the right mood for it
Enjoyed it and it was very different than what I usually listen to.
Twas fun
Another album I have, considered Basie’s best just not my cup of tea
Definitely some good tunes here, despite not being a huge horn fan.
Mood: Dancing around the kitchen with the cat, solely to annoy it, while cooking up something intricate and slow on a Sunday afternoon. I'm more into the 40s sound of big band so this is a little too lounge-y/Jetsons-y for my tastes but I'm not mad at it. Lil' Darlin' is excellent cool jazz.
It was
I never really know how to rate Big Band, so I never know what to say. I liked it, thought it was good.
Väldigt underhållande och stämningsfullt album
I don't know much about big band jazz but I enjoyed listening to this one.
Classic jazz Dinner music Cozy
This was a nice listen. I don't know a lot of big band jazz but I enjoyed listening to this. I picture it as dinner party music from that era.
Basied as f
The sound of 1958, and the cover to match
This was some nice background jazz. A little less interesting than my jazz album yesterday but still some pleasant jams in the background for reading 3/5
Walked around listening to this like I was one of those 60s films with women in pixie hair cuts, white knee high boots and geometric print dresses. The actual music was nice for background but I wasn’t really concentrating. Sorry, Count
This was an OK Sunday morning with the kids listen. Great album art
Nice!
Front to back jazzy excellence. Count Basie and His Orchestra have put together some fine compositions here. This is a step outside of my comfort zone that gave me so much to work with.
Jazzy!
Sounds like one long song, not much difference between the tracks. It's chill, but it gets a bit boring near the end.
Ehhhhhh just another jazz album. If didn’t just have another one this would be higher but since all the albums this week have been duds it just bogs the album down
Fallout 3 music
sleepy jazz is alright
fav: midnite blue
okaaayyy typa songs they'd play at movie credit or wedding i guess but i DESPERATELY need some real human voice likeeee... its okkk no need to be shy just😇 go sing girlll😭😭😭😭😭. ((this was my first time listening to jazz album im so sorry))
Not bad at all. 3.5 stars
Pop Jazz and Swing of the 50s. Great record to dance to and feel like I’m in the past.
jazz para sandunguear el dedo al compás
Big band jazzia. Tuommoista aika elokuvamaista tai semmosta jotain mykkäfilmi. Tai niinkuin kohtausmusaa :D Foo kappaleesta tuli mieleen family guy theme
Gives 70s Las Vegas vibes
