The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
David Bowie
Reviews (page 13 of 14)
This one is hard to rate. Obviously, it's very well regarded in music history. For me, it goes both good and bad. I find I just don't really like David Bowie's voice all that much. This album starts out with its weakest track, Five Years. Soul Love is not much better, but it has some good saxophone music. Moonage Daydream really picks it up though, the guitar in there is really nice. Starman keeps that energy up. It Ain't Easy is amazing, with a nice western cowboy feel to it. Lady Stardust is soft and sweet, nice and chill. Star is very fun. The rest of the album drops back a little bit, with the exception of the great guitar riffs in Ziggy Stardust. I'm going to give it a 3, but it really bounces a lot among 2, 3, and 4. Best song: It Ain't Easy
an album I’d somehow managed not to listen through all the way through before… strange! one that i think is not easy upon first listen, it’s bowie! obviously starman, five years, moonage daydream were familiar - i think i’ll keep it around so i can chew on it a little. i think the version of moonage daydream i’m used to is a different one than the 2012 remaster, or it’s just crazier than i remember!
some great tunes on here
The album starts off ok, but Starman was right where it needed to be to keep momentum going.
nice!
Starman on mainio, muuten vaan ihan passelia musisointia. Olenpas kriittinen.
I use this album as a litmus test. When I come across those ‘100 greatest albums’ type lists, I look to see which Bowie album they rate highest. If it’s this, and it often is, I look elsewhere. I don’t believe that any discerning listener could hear Young Americans or Low or Station to Station and seriously say that this is a better album. It’s a marketing and commercial triumph, for sure. But strip all that away and you’re left with a ragbag of overblown rock clichés loosely assembled around a frankly dreadful idea; a rock star chosen by aliens to announce the end of the world. I mean, even if you like concept albums and rock operas, and I distrust both deeply, this particular concept is a stinker. It’s not quite his worst album (we haven’t got to Diamond Dogs yet), but it’s a contender for sure. If this was the only record on your turntable, five years would seem like a very long time.
6/10
babak what is happening XD
I am not an absolutely huge fan of David Bowie, although I know that he's great, but I did enjoy Starman and some of his other songs. Overall, this was a pretty nice album, nothing too bad.
Is this a new fantasy novel?
Once a year I sit down and try to "understand" Bowie, on a sonic and (perhaps) intellectual level. Each year, I am defeated. This year, maybe I got a step closer. Maybe.
Not a fan of David bowie bit some of his best songs are on here.
Okay album, only one track that stands out being one of his most famous about Ziggy Stardust
Okay so I can’t believe I got another Bowie album this early on, like this is my 5th one now. Also this guys voice changes in every album I swear, like I had to check if his song featured someone else but nope just him. I also got such mixed vibes like it felt Pink Floyd and then it was giving Beatles so I was all confused. Not the worst Bowie album also not my favorite.
I want to like David Bowie but it's hard for some reason. Hopefully I can bump this one up to 4 stars in the future once I'm actually able to enjoy it.
3/5
This was a serendipitous first album pick. When I was 11 or so, a boy at summer camp was shocked to hear that I didn't really "like" music or have any favorite bands, and leant me some CDs to try out. The first was "David Bowie". And I didn't like it. I don't think I even finished it. I liked this album okay. The songs I really liked were Five Years, Rock-'n'-roll Suicide, and Ziggy Stardust. It's hard to judge a song like Starman that I've heard a million times. The rest were forgettable or I didn't like. A lot of elements felt dated, both in production and lyrics (on Five Years the singer refers to a person as "a black"). But some lyrics were quite fun, especially Ziggy Stardust (he was the nazz!). The songs I liked made me feel something, Five Years especially. That's what I want in a song. 6/10.
Huh, never noticed Kanye's name on the cover of this album before... My Bowie experience has been pretty strange but probably not all that uncommon for someone my age. For the first 30-ish years of my life I basically knew no Bowie that wasn't on MTV in my childhood and my impression of him was some combination of the "China Girl" video and the ludicrous "Dancin' in the Street" video with Mick Jagger. When I started reading more about rock history and the influences on artists I loved, Bowie always came up and I didn't really get it. Fast-forward to the last ten years or so and I read a biography of him that made me want to explore the music more and I've been blown away. (I am sure this was at least in part encouraged by the public Bowie renaissance sparked by his death and brilliant final album.)
Listen, I'm not a big david bowie guy. And I'm just talking about musically, I'm not going to judge his cultural importance because he obviously was a vibrant character of the 20th century. But I don't think he has an album above a 3/5 star. His voice is reminiscent of an era of music where rockstars could get away with completely uninspiring vocals. That being said, I can see how this album is influential (musically) because I can see similar elements to The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here which came out 1 and 3 years later. If this album came out in 1975, I'd be giving it a 2. But since it seems to have had some influence on Pink Floyd and certainly others, and because the second half of he album is much stronger than the first (only Moonage Daydream is worth a damn the first half, but Ziggy Stardust and Suffragette City are good tunes), I'll throw it a 3 star.
Good album
Ça me parle pas trop (surtout la deuxième moitié) et pourtant il y a quand même plein de morceaux que j'aime bien (dans la première moitié du coup).
Popular standard. A bit overrated.
Let's find out what all the fuss is about 1. piano man ass song. okay the Five Years hook hits 2. this is just the Beatles 3. these songs are pleasant but so of their time. reads as movie trailer music I gave up. It's all like, fine.
Ok listen.
Meh. Et par som er kule, men resten kjedelig. Ikke min smak
Was just ok, found party a bit boring
good.
I enjoy a narrative album, but overall, this album gets a decent rating carried by some bangers (moonage, Starman) and then a lot of stuff that's fine. I appreciate that this was Bowie's breakthrough and what really launched him into the weird side, but outside the historical context, this album is more decent than great in my eyes.
not my kind of thing david bowie to be honest
Honestly, I think this list includes every David Bowie album ever made.
2nd best Bowie album after Hunky Dory.
Now I just wanna listen to the Seu Jeorge covers from life aquatic. Knocking down for pedo factor.
Starting to like David Bowie :o
6/10
Despite my general Bowie-skepticism, this is pretty nice. Soul Love and Moonage Dream create a nice spacey atmosphere. The record kind of falls off in the second half for me, and the Ziggy storyline/concept doesn’t really connect with me.
“Moonage Daydream” guitar work was great. I’m just not a huge fan of Bowie’s vocals - on Starman - as Randy Jackson would say - kind of pitchy man! “It ain’t Easy” is probably the standout - Bowie is still pitchy but I thought it was much better song than Starman or the more known song such as Ziggy Stardust or Suffragette City. Will I go back to listen to this again is the question and if would have answered this yes I would have given it 4 stars.
David Bowie is a musical behemoth and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is probably one the most iconic albums that many hold very close to hearts. Unfortunately, it doesn't do much for me even as huge Bowie Fan. It's just a type of music that I don't particularly enjoy. There are some songs that I really enjoy such as Starman and Moonage Daydream but it's just not something I put on all that frequently.
Another album, where the question of does a few great songs make it a great album?
This album was peak Bowie at his most word marrying best. I could only imagine a sober persons face when he introduced ideas for this album. This album doesn’t blow me away. It’s pieced together much better than some of his later year albums. On average it’s a up tempo album and the songs just fly by. There’s defiantly some solid tracks. There are some so-so tracks as well. There isn’t trash. I will say that. I haven’t looked to see what the song is called so I can avoid it at all costs next time. Choice cut: Ziggy Stardust
I think it's the best of the Bowie albums I've listened to. I'd always heard great things about this album but it was just alright in my opinion.
Day 89 - Feb 28th, 2025 I still hate David Bowie. 3/5
point4.
Moonage Dream Starman Lady Stardust Ziggy Stardust Suffragette City
Obviously a lot of great songs. Just never been a fan.
This was much better than the previous David Bowie album and I enjoyed some of the songs on this one. Starman was definitely my favorite and also the only one I heard before. I like albums that tell a story throughout and this was one of them, but outside of starman, there just wasn’t a lot of memorable songs for me.
Some good stuff. I guess I’m not a David Bowie fan, but I do like some of his songs.
I have friends who think this is one of the best albums ever made, but I just can't agree with them. It's got its moments ("Suffragette City" may be my favorite), but on the whole I just don't dig it that much.
Hmmmmmm idk the album didn’t feel that special to me. I don’t have anything transformative to say The average 3 for thee!
Re-read Paz's review again instead. The singles carried, but I wanted more.
Lol, maybe it is me but just an english dude singing. Good song Starman, but rest of album didn't do too much for me.
Otro álbum de Bowie. Me encanta Starman pero del resto no he logrado sacar gran satisfacción, quizá requiera una segunda escuchada. Nota: 3.0
Good Bowie with deep, complex tracks.
I lime him better as David
David Bowie is a legend ans this is a good album with some outstanding and amazing tracks, however, there is also a few uninteresting songs in my opinion which lowers the score a bit.
Fine, but just fine. Bowie is my least favorite per this website so for his standards it was good lol
Good, but still derivative of Marc Bolan and Lou Reed. His true masterpiece is "Scary Monsters".
Great album. Heart wrenching first song. David's signature style all the way through.
I don’t like Bowie. What I like are his greatest hits. When he’s on he’s great but when he’s off he sucks. This album has maybe four great songs and the rest I can’t skip past fast enough.
I love the singles on here, and there's quite a few of them. "Starman" has those amazing soaring vocals, featuring the full-octave jump on the first line (sounds like maybe lifted from "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", but that's just clever songwriting). The orchestration is really nice too, transitioning from glam orchestral on the chorus to that blues guitar riff, which they then double on vocals - nice trick. The title track is a classic, it just does everything right, and it could easily be the picture next to "classic rock" in the dictionary. And "Suffragette City" is just a great rock thumper, elevated by the weird bass synth riff and Bowie's "wham bam!" theatrics at the end. But the deep cuts are B-level at best, and so as a whole the CD isn't as strong as some of the other early 70s classics. They're not bad, just, fine. "Moonage Daydream" is probably the strongest of the bunch, but it suffers from being too long and a little bloated. And in particular, the whole middle of the CD (between "Starman" and the title track) kind of sags. There is a modest diversity of sound and some nice moments in there, taken as a whole. But each individual song is pretty basic on every dimension, and unlike some of the others on here, not especially catchy or energetic. I could've given this a 3 or a 4. I shaded to the lower end because the filler is just a little too long.
Rock n roll suicide felt so different than the rest of the album but I loved the vibes so much.
Hh
Certainly memorable melodies. Moonage Daydream's outro is very moving in particular. Definitely a lot of stolen blues that's so common in the 60s & 70s no doubt. Very Theatrical vocals to say the least. Lyrically it is very vivid, unfortunately this makes this all very indecipherable, however incredibly poetic. It's a very balanced push & pull between surface level lines & the larger picture in between them.
I am generally not a big Bowie fan, but I do think this is one of his strongest albums. I especially like the first half. It's alright. I dunno. I think this album is a bit overhyped as revolutionary and groundbreaking because the lyrics are centered around Bowie reimagining himself as a glam androgynous alien, but the music itself is mostly a bit boring. "Starman" is easily my favorite track, though I do also like the opener. If someone put this album on I wouldn't complain, but I probably won't seek it out again. Meh/10
This is an album that's in desperate need of a remaster. I feel like the songs are so much better than the recordings on the album, the production sounds so tinny and muddy that it's very hard to fully appreciate the songs. Despite the awful production the songs are mostly great, but this is an album that is handicapped until it's remastered. Top tracks: Starman, Suffragette City, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide
✅✅ Suffragette City
I just don’t understand the vast volumes of smoke that gets blown up Bowie’s arse. This is fine, Starman and Ziggy Stardust are good tracks, but the rest is just … there. It’s fine, but no better.
This is a classic. I wouldn't listen to it on a daily basis, but it's worth listening at least once.
I had only heard a couple of tracks. Solid album.
I can hear the work and thought that went into this masterpiece, but there wasn’t a single song I would listen to outside of this project :(
I don't know if there's a term for this kind of album. It's not quite a concept album. Persona album? Anyway, they're a good idea, an artist letting you know they are trying something different for a period of time. It seems to have died with some notably failures, like Chris Gaines and Sasha Fierce, and with artists opting to either move between acts or just embrace it without changing personas. Maybe we're in the Eras era. On the album level, it works great. It's cohesive, but not repetitive. The songs aren't his best, but they're not bad. It's the kind of album I'd vibe to, but will probably not come back to.
It was good, but not as outstanding as I expected
Tim: “The hit songs are amazing songs, and the entire soundscape of the record is unique and tasty. Five stars.” Lil: “Meh.”
I don’t enjoy this album as much of some of Bowie’s later releases. Just never did much for me, maybe it’s too glam for my tastes. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, just not top-tier for me.
It’s not bad is it?
Bowie over an album can be more miss than hit. This is an exception, as its pretty good all the way through. But still I'm just not a Bowie fan and probably never will be. 3
Alright. 3
The beginning kinda all sounded the same, but the ending was better. Kinda liked the last song the best maybe?
I guess I'm just missing whichever chromosome makes people go nuts for David Bowie. I think his music is fine and understand why people see him as a sort of cultural touchstone. It's possible that I've just heard all these songs so many times that there is nothing new to discover in them. I do admire that Bowie was not afraid to take chances with his image and sound. Unfortunately, this brand of early-70's-British-Glam-Rock comes across as very mainstream in 2024.
I don't think glam rock is for me.
Huge David Bowie fan and love some of the tracks, but Not my favorite overall.
I’m a fan of David Bowie but I’ve never really been a fan of his music. That said, I have enjoyed this album today overall. 3
3.5 he has better albums
Couple of good songs. Otherwise a little flat. 3/5
Good I enjoyed - 3.5/5 Standout tracks: - It ain't easy 4/5 - Suffragette city 4/5
3.5 - a few great songs, but most of it didn’t really click for me.
The better of the Bowie albums I've heard so far. Many hits on this one, but still not enough to really warm the cockles of my heart.
It's hard for me to relate my feelings on this one. While I enjoy the theatrics and songs on this, none of it really blows me away like it does for many. I think it may just be a generational thing, or at least a time thing, where it will just take a bit for Bowie to grow on me. I know its a concept album but half the time I have zero clue what he is on about lol. All of that aside, I really appreciate this album for its out of the box thinking for an album from 1972. Crazy to think about that. I will revisit Bowie for sure and I think this will grow on me. But for now, a 3.
Starman and suffragette city are the stand outs!
хоть некоторые и интересные и не этот альбом меня тогда сломал, но в целом просто скучно
this was a fun interesting album and i liked the weird of it
It was alright. Dated. I still don’t get the DB hype
Just Bowie
I like a lot of Bowie's music. This one is probably my least favorite of his library though.
Some stand out songs, the rest is good but not amazing
Enjoyed some of the more "rock" songs. Moonage Daydream had a cool ray gun guitar solo. Starman was fun and seemed familiar. Suffragette City was fun too. Some of the more spoken or ballad songs were weird and not for me.
I don’t usually like Bowie’s main work but this was fun. Probs won’t listen to it again though.
Of course this is a very famous album. Of course the great song Starman is on it. Of course Ziggy Stardust is also quite good. Of course Lady Stardust is ok. Of course the rest is simply not so great. A important album in the career of Bowie but in my opinion not one of his best.
Odd. I have a weird relationship with Bowie. Love some songs but must are too strange for me. This has some good stuff, some pretty average stuff
then the spiders started attacking
Not my artist, still ok, Suffragette City rocks at least
Theatrical pop that is over-the-top and quirky at times (sometimes even veering into cheese), but the catchy melodies and very good production help most things land. Highlights: "Five Years" (piano ballad), "Moonage Daydream" (proto-glam, guitars just need to be a touch louder and crunchier), "Starman" (Beatles-esque with jangly guitar and double-tracked choruses), "Ziggy Stardust" (Bob Dylan goes glam) Notable: "Suffragette City" (verses definitely influenced by Lou Reed)
I know Bowie is a legend and Starman and Ziggy Stardust are classics, but other than that ... I am just not that into it
Nice album, that I just recently listened to a podcast about. This was one of the first albums with a story on it, less of a collection of songs. It is cool that this came in my recommendations only a week later. I do find some of the songs a bit lack-luster. But Bowie never was my style.
This album was great. The start of it was not as interesting as the second half. Or day I say 1/3 wasn't as interesting as the other 2/3. That's how fractions work. David Bowie always surprises me with albums that sound very different but also sound very Bowie at the same time. I appreciate that approach when one can pull it off. Separates the musical geniuses from the musical snobs I guess. Not my favorite record of his. But I cant deny its brilliance.
***An ok album
it's good but i don't think i like it as much as i should
Nothing too special
Eh, just sounded like David Bowie, it was fine 6/10
Three Bowie albums in and thought this was going to be the best one. Gave it two listens and it is a good album with a cool concept however my expectations were high for this. Just 3 stars for now
The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (2012 Remaster) by David Bowie 6.9 This is Ana album where I think I am going to come back in like a few years and be like how did you possibly rank this so low and I can understand why someone would think that to be honest but it is just my opinion. I think that this album although being a solid showing is something that had a few songs that really stood out to me like Star Man Suffragette City Rock ’n’ role Suicide and that was it. I think it might just be how I need my music to be stimulating and fast but it was fine and something where if the songs that I added I have on repeat for a long time it might go higher but at the moment it is not going to be something that will get scored where it is. I asked Dad if he liked it and I will see what he says later but for me it was a solid album but nothing that I willl not listen to again.
This was not my first listen of this album in its entirety. I am a David Bowie fan, but this record never had impact on me that it had on my friends and colleagues. My album favorites have always been LOW and OUTSIDE, and EARTHLING, with a just smattering of singles here and there from all of his other albums. "Starman", "Ziggy Stardust", and "Suffragette City" are the only tracks off this album that have ever captured my imagination. Depending on my mood on any given day I can go for "Moonage Dream" and occasionally I am up for "Rock n' Roll Suicide"; but I never been into the rest of the album, no matter how many times I hear it. I recognize its importance in the evolution of pop star as art/artifice persona as well its importance as a concept album, but I find it difficult to justify giving it 5 stars or even 4 stars, and I certainly don't think it is the 9th most important album of this exercise, which is where it sits among the global rankings on the list as I listen to it today. So 3 stars it is.
⭐⭐⭐/5
Tää oli parempaa Bowieta. Semmosta kevyttä, mutta menevää rockia. Parhaat: Starman, Moonage Daydream, Rock N Roll Suicide
felt
I really wanted to like this more, but it was just okay to me.
Heard it while sleepy, solid, not my thing tho
Mostly blah for me with a couple of gems.
mid but starman is nice
I always think of The Martian when Starman comes on and it is a highlight to me on the album. I think that I don't love David Bowie music, it kind of all sounds the same, which vocally is not as fun, but instrumentally is nice.
Maybe it's the glam rock or the punk-ish sound, maybe it's his voice or nonsensical "eccentric" lyrics, but I'm beginning to think that Bowie just isn't for me. I realize many people speak highly of him and this album in particular, but i just don't get the reverence. Album is still good (especially the music and arrangements), particularly Starman.
Annie did not like but I found some of it pretty good
Starman bangs
Ziggy Stardust and Suffragette City are great tracks. I'm "meh-" on the rest of the album.
Me ENCANTA Bowie y este disco es muy especial.
overrated af
Can appreciate but not my favorite.
Unique. Too unique for my tastes. I liked a couple of the songs.
I saw Bowie touring this album in Memphis and slept through the show - fans were mostly abuzz about the costumes. Listening to the album now, I find it chock full of filler tracks with a few really good ones. Like some critics at the time of the release, I find the "concept" incomprehensible.
Cool Bowie.
Its not a bad album. Its not my favourite Bowie album. Is it overrated? Possibly. Cant deny the fact that it got big for a reason, but its not my thing.
A fun listen, lots of energy but I probably won't come back to it
Why do I feel like I'm supposed to like David Bowie? He's never really piqued my interest. This album was alright but it didn't win me over. I wouldn't seek this out but I'd listen to it again. 3.5/5
Just not a Bowie fan. Doesn't do anything for me.
I knew the Bowie was coming eventually. It's a decent album, although not really my particular taste. I do like Suffragette City however. That song is a banger.
lo amo a él 7.5/10
I had really high hopes for this album, but I didn't care for most of the songs. "Moonage Daydream," "Starman," and "Ziggy Stardust" are amazing. The rest? Meh. I wonder why the music doesn't feel very filled out. Still, love the concept.
Some really great ones for sure, but it’s all too much for me.
Artsy rock, first song has the "somebody people" lyric
Only because of star man. It is a bit overplayed/hyped up too much. I get that it is an alter ego but it is still weird
Well at least we're a third of the way through. I did like this one slightly more than the other Bowie albums, "Starman", "It Ain't Easy", and "Suffragette City" were my personal favorites from this album. However all that being said I still don't think he has all that great of a voice and a lot of his stuff I think just sounds so fake and naive. He's still not my style and I have to go through another 6 of his albums. He is not good enough to justify 9 albums being on this list.
Meh it’s alright
I love David Bowie but his qualities doesn’t shine on the album format for me. Here are som absolute bangers like Starman and Suffragette City but other than that it goes a bit over my head I’m afraid. It is not a bad album but it isn’t a great album for me.
Fun
I really like Bowie, but, some of these are misses. The hits though??? Chef's kiss
A few classics on there
Probed by Ziggy.
It’s okay but there’s like better Bowie no?
Неплохо
This album was OK, not really sure if Bowie is for me. Not really sure who he was appealing to just because his music was not quite poppy not quite Rocky but I don’t know I wasn’t alive back then, so who knows
Every single track on this album is a masterpiece. The man basically invented a new genre. Rock (even Fantasy Rock) is just not my favorite, so this is right on the edge of four stars, but not quite there.
It was ok. Didn't pick up until Moonage Daydream. Maybe I didn't get it.
It is good and remember some hit songs. No real bad songs, but nothing spectacular.
Pleasantly surprised. This was nice.
No for me. Doesn't mean it is bad.
Quality album, Some old songs I hadn't heard in a while
Very fun and unexpected. Great guitar solos!
Liked it but didn’t love it
Wouldn’t listen again
I get this is a classic album, but Bowie never really clicked with me.
I want to love this album more than I do. That said, I do like it a lot. I just want to be as thrilled with Bowie as everyone else. Maybe someday it will click. Until then, it's a 3.
"Hang on to Yourself" is a bop. I don't really follow the story here, but the songs slap.
Easy rating here. 3-star. Good album. I can see why this is a legendary album. But it’s not something I’d seek out.
not so cool
I like the theatrics of it all
Geez
Meh...
Classic Rock. Good one
Glam-Bowie. It was adventurous for the age. In hindsight it is a bit raw, but a steppingstone on his amazing career. "Starman" and "It Ain't Easy" are the best tracks. Grade 3,5/5
Music okay. I didn’t like the singing that well.
Interesting album. I was familiar with some of the songs so it wasn't completely unfamiliar to me. Not a bad listen.
This was my first David Bowie album, overall it was a pleasant album. Beautiful music with thought-provoking lyrics. "Five Years" is a dark start to an album.
Inte lika bra som Hunky dory.
Third time encountering Bowie here, and this time around I had a much more pleasant time listening to him than with Blackstar and Low. This can definitely be attributed to this record attempting something different or being at a different time in his career; but now I know I can enjoy his rocking when it has pop elements and his personality shining through in a less esoteric way. While there are certain melodies I got hooked on and instrumentation that suits my tastes more, I ended up indifferent to some parts even when understanding what it was trying to do (such as Suffragette City). For the first time I didn’t actively dislike any of the songs, yet I wished there would be at least one that could reach an even higher level where I’d want to back to it over and over again. 5.5/10
Much more my style, although didn't have time to listen to lyrics. Like the classic rock, jazz elements. Not a huge fan of the eccentric vocals on some of the earlier tracks. Fav Track(s): Moonage Daydream, Starman
The two hits are good, and Star is strong also but not enough of the rest grabbed my attention.
Bussin but not that bussin
S'alright
Some bangers Some mids
This is a good album but I dunno man. It didn’t hit like k wanted it to. But David Bowie is such a rare talent and treasure is for three stars for that alone.
Good album, Particularly enjoyed Ziggy Stardust and Starman
David Bowie good kinda
Pretty, pretty, pretty good
Underwhelmed. I know it's a classic but sorry not impressed
I do like Bowie but this album didn't resonate too much with me
not really into the style of singing. great dry drum tone, obviously sounds analog. very trebly at parts. kind of boring but i understand why it's a classic.
I can hear the influence this album had on future generations. Great production/editing. I will say, Bowie's voice wasn't quite as powerful as I remember it.
Of the three Bowie albums so far, this was the better one. Took a while for me to get into it but by the end I was fully on board. I don’t think I’ll ever listen to his stuff for fun, but it’s been interesting seeing the various eras
My fourth Bowie Album (out of 146 generated) and I'm still not a fan. One of the better ones tho.
It was okay. I saved to my albums but by the end of the album I wasn't greatly impressed. However I like a lot of David Bowie's music
Not the biggest Bowie fan, he creeps me out and I don’t really like his voice. That being said this is a solid album, not my favorite of his. Has only a couple songs I enjoy.
I still don't get Bowie. Best tracks: Starman, Ziggy Stardust and Suffragette City. The rest made no impression. It's like Star Wars, Bacon and Beyoncé. Like everyone else is watching, eating and listening to something different to me.
Enjoyed, but didn’t really get into.
Not entirely unpleasant, but a bit strange.
It’s a classic of course. Production is great and some songs are great (starman, suffragette city, five years) others feels like filler.
It was okay. Not my favorite. 3/5
Vermakelijke pop-rock album, met wat echt lekkere plaatje ertussen. Wel iets te dramatisch voor mij op sommige punten ofzo Favorieten: Starman, Ziggy Stardust
I preferred Blackstar as an album overall - I do think it is a stronger concept (don't really get Ziggy Stardust). This album has some real belters, including Starman, Ziggy Stardust, and Suffragette City. Unfortunately nothing else really stood out. Despite 4 albums, I'm still solidly on the fence with Bowie.
It's good but it meanders and doesn't really seem to know where to go. This album is the drunk man lost in a city he's never been to.
The hits are iconic but I wasn’t terribly impressed by the rest.
I feel bad because this is considered as one of the greatest of all times. It just doesn't do it for me though. I find it way too boring for me. Maybe it'll grow on me. But maybe it won't. I don't know. I did listen to this album like half a year ago in late 2022 and I found it to be alright. But upon relistening to it I just didn't want to finish listening to the whole thing.
My sort of era and DB has produced some great stuff. Band is good but mostly it’s not something I would add to any playlist.
It's good but I don't understand why people rate it higher than his other albums. Maybe I should've read the lyrics, but I didn't feel like it
I might just not get it but I'm really not a fan of Bowie...
This album is not all about the music. It's as much about acting and styling and story telling. The Ziggy Stardust persona was a big part of the success, I imagine (I wasn't born yet). That's the main merit of this record, not the music. The singing is a little flat almost all the time. The band sounds more like individual musicians than like a solid unit. The drums sound weak and they drag slightly. Guitar sounds boxy. Overall the timing is a little shaky. The songs are not bad, but not great. Similar to what the Small Faces and the Kinks already did better before. All in all it's not terrible, but the current 4.3 average rating is too generous. Favorite song: Suffragette City.
not my favourite bowie album but it's still good
I unironically think this is the first time I’ve listened to david bowie. 3.5/5 stars
D va ok
I'm glad I listened to it. Not much more to say, really.
unpopular opinion, maar ik vind veel van Bowie overrated, en dit heeft mijn mening niet doen veranderen. Er zijn er een paar goed maar ook vele die niet men ding zijn
Fun, but not great
3.5/5 Great lyrics, not extraordinary production, overall good album
A couple of great tunes for sure
I know I like a good portion of David Bowie's work and I like quite a few songs, but I am not vibing with this album super hard right now. It is certainly good no doubt, but I'm not in the album 100% Probably a high 3/5 Starman might just carry this to a 4/5 because it is so good/iconic
Never actually listened to a full Bowie album. The music is really good - guitar is sick. Definitely better on second listen. Overall I really like the songs but I’m not that into Bowie - I’m not super getting his appeal - I think it’s mostly because I don’t like his voice
seems like there is a story or a concept throughout the whole album. I will give it another try later in the future. 3.5/5
Not a Bowie fan
I liked like 3 songs on the album. Much better than the u2 album which I should’ve given a 1 star
classic Bowie doing his thing. operatic, theatrical, and not my favorite work of his. 3.5/5
7,5/10
Great 'on brand' album by Bowie. Ziggy was androgynous and weird and unique like nobody else. So much Bowie!
I’ve been greatly anticipating the day I got another Bowie album. You see, I’m not a fan of David Bowie. I never “got” Bowie. When Moonage Daydream came out a few months ago, I enthusiastically sat through it, hoping to learn enough about David Bowie that I could start to appreciate his music. I came away from the movie with a lot of respect for him as an artist, and looked forward to the generator giving me another Bowie album, so I could listen with fresh ears. I have listened to this album before and I hadn’t really cared for it. Sadly, I still don’t really care for it. I fully realize there is probably something wrong with me. I wish I did like him, but I just don’t.
Not one of my favorites out of David Bowie, but it still has some ok bangers in here. Not sure what the exact rating system is for this site but I wanna give it maybe 5/10 or 3/5 ???
Glam Rock
I love David Bowie. This is an essential glam-rock entry and worth a listen. Great musicians and production. "Ziggy Stardust" and "Suffragette City" popular favorites. "Five Years" is my least favorite. As much as I like this album, it is not my favorite David Bowie album. Three stars is the best for the overall album.
Normally like concept albums this doesn't really do it for me
einige gute Lieder, aber viele einfach so meh.
Paras biisi: Suffragette City.
I love how the rock n roll spirit is found throughout, and the raw production really makes this album feel human and alive. I love the sort or anti-hero storyline, that is probably a sign of the times and the desperation of people to find someone as their voice or direction. But the songs didn’t speak to me as a whole as much as other Bowie albums, and for that reason I can only balance the rating out to a 3.
liked it better as the album went on, I'm between 3 and 4 stars
Starman is awesome, especially that solo at the end. Other songs were fun but a little less stellar.
Above average. 3.5/5
good. nice variety in instrumentation and probably well produced. lyrics are evocative of the concept, which is cool and his voice keeps stuff interesting. best when it swells in a very rock opera way. about a 7 for enjoyment on the first listen. will probably listen again and it might go up.
C+
Starman was catchy, but nothing I would really seek out or listen to again and again.
More miss than hit, but the hits are hits
moonage daydream and star man = love. i did enjoy the album overall
Some undeniably famous all-time classic cuts on this one. So why can I never connect with it? I think a lot for me has to do with Bowie's voice. I like the silly/stupid concept album, I like the sound of the album, the first ~4 cuts are really good, but I get tired of it all after that. I don't know, this has always been a tough call for me - like, if "Ziggy Stardust" comes on the radio it's kinda cool but by the time I get to it here (track 9) it's nothing special for me. I never much liked "Suffragette City" Weak review - I just have never been much for Bowie overall (outside of "Low"). I think the best I can say is that at my most generous I kind of like it. Like, Dotty. Like. High points: "Five Years" "Moonage Daydream" 5/10 3 stars.
Was good but nothing I really went crazy about
Not a major bowie fan but a few good one
Nice album
Nice
Good, at least 4 great songs
Added a few tis decent
Didn’t enjoy it enough to give it a 4, so call it 3.5 rounded down
I’ve never fully “got” David Bowie. Starman is great, and there are clearly other good songs here, but it really doesn’t grab me they way I think it probably should. Will need to listen again, but for now it was just grand.
classic
Some good standout tracks. One of his better albums in my opinion, but where Bowie is concerned I’ve never really been able to get into his music fully. There’s always a good track or two on each album, but the rest just doesn’t grab me.
Yeah quite enjoyed this some quite interesting songs and some bangers like starman. It was gentle, aqward and weird but in a good way.
Listened to this album several times and keep wanting to resonate with it, but overall it doesn't happen. That said, I've had Moonage Daydream stuck in my head for days! 3.5
Is that a sign for Kanye West above the starman? It's been a while since our last Bowie album, maybe since the first day. But when you've got moonage daydream and starman on here, this is a great one. Still isn't turning me into a huge Bowie fan but I'm learning to appreciate him more.
Is this the best David Bowie album? I kinda hope not, because if it is, then I'm definitely not much of a Bowie fan. I don't know what to say, I think I was looking forward to this one since I've heard so much, but damn David Bowie just isn't that engaging or exciting to me. A couple songs I liked, but it's just not doing much for me overall. He's the most represented artist on this list, and we've had a few by now but nothing blowing me away. I'm starting to doubt that'll ever happen. Favorite tracks: Moonage Daydream, Suffragette City. Album art: The famous cover that predicted Kanye West, a much better artist. I hope someone reads me saying this and gets mad. 3/5
This is a “time machine” album: I wish I could go back and hear it brand new, before “David Bowie” fully existed. I feel like I missed the good party.
Hmm - I struggle with Bowie - best i can say good background music
Bowie is one of those where I see the influence he has but just don’t particularly enjoy him
Good songs, played well, by an obviously very talented artist. It does nothing for me, I never fell into the Bowie fandom as so many did. There's no real reason for it, he just isn't for me.
You can tell this album has a lot of musical talent within it. I'm not a musician or a critic so I can't appreciate it as much as someone with an ear for that but it was fun to listen to.
This is David Bowie's fifth album. It is a glam rock piece that is also loosely a rock opera concept album based on Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust. The story goes that Ziggy is a rock star sent to Earth to be a savior before the apocalypse, but falls from grace due to his own ego. This album was praised highly at release and charted high too. Most consider this album to be Bowie's breakthrough. Not based on musical prowess (which is still great), but the album had the biggest cultural impact. To date, this album has sold about 7.5 million copies worldwide and is Bowie's second best-selling album. I loved the music on this album and the fact that the songs went together to form the Ziggy Stardust story. This album has to be a rock cornerstone of the 70's, and I do agree it's one of David Bowie's best albums.
3.5
Not as good as it thinks it is
Nice to hear a full album again
Clássico, reconheço, mas não me identifiquei muito, com exceção de Starman e Rock 'N Roll Suicide.
Enjoyed this. Nothing else!!
Best Song: Ziggy Stardust. Might be worth it just for the line "Making love with his ego". Worst Song: It Ain't Easy. Not bad, just forgettable. Overall: Very theatrical. Certainly one of the albums on this list that feels most cohesive as a single concept.
Hey man...
I know it is a classic, but this was my first time really listening to it. 3/5
I see why people enjoy this but it's not for me
Bowie heeft MI beter werk gemaakt, maar zeker leuk om eens te horen.
Deze fase uit Bowie's carrière vind ik tof. Beetje theatraal maar nog aan de goede en geloofwaardige kant allemaal.
It's fine. Bowie not my bag though.
Decent. I know most of them despite never listening to this album before. Maybe the lore around it is more interesting than the album itself?
Just ok
Classic and experimental.
Some good songs here but appears less cohesive as a concept than when I first heard it a multitude of 5 years ago.
David Bowie had almost no singing range, but consistently insisted on shooting outside of what little he did have. When he doesn't do so here, you can kinda listen to it. But that all added up together makes up like 3.5 tracks out of the 14 on the album. But that stuff still feels like filler. Everything else here is fatally flawed trash with wretch inducing vocals. As an album with less than an EP's worth of material, this shouldn't exist. But then the paradoxically awesome Ziggy Stardust does somehow manage to legitimize its existence.
Думаю, что Боуи мне не заходит так сильно, как мог бы лишь потому, что я ищу в музыке больше структуры и повторяемости, а он все же человек искусства.
If I'm purely rating this off first listen, which I guess is the point of this, it gets a 3.5. Would probably get better upon more listens, but it didn't really excite me first time round, there are Bowie albums I enjoyed more. I think perhaps my expectations were too high going into this...
Inte hans bästa, kändes lite meh, 3/5 skulle jag säga
One to save and come back to as not sure exactly if it resonates still with me? Feels quite dated, but there’s also a couple of great songs (and probably more if I give it more time)
Beautiful! I’ve never listened to a full Bowie album, just the greatest hits. Why don’t more people do concept albums?
Disco que marca el estilo musical característico de David Bowie, aún así y salvo un par de canciones, tiende a ser repetitivo y cansino haciéndote pensar que quizá está tan bien valorado porque el título del disco es largo y raro.
classic bowie, great title and fun little concept album
Great album, not really my style.
It was pretty good. I think it's a case where the sum of all parts are greater than an individual song.
I think I like the idea of Bowie way more than his music.
I had not listend to this album before. I liked it. The best song to me was Starman.
Groovy album. Loved Ziggy
good writing and guitar, but just no jams
Ok album. A couple of great songs. The rest were alright.
This is one of those albums that I try with every few years but never seem to get. Despite its chronological proximity to Hunky Dory, an album I absolutely love, this one has never really grabbed me. There is nothing wrong with this album, but it sounds dated compared to Hunky Dory, which has a really timeless feel. Part of the issue, I think, is the lack of classic songs. This album has a very coherent feel, it sounds good, but when I listen to it, I keep waiting for a song to really draw me in, but I don't think this really occurs until Suffragette City, which is nearly 2/3 of the way through the album. The album is consistently good, and I feel like I "got" it better than I have in the past, I just don't understand why this album gets held up as THE early Bowie album. It's good but not great.
I respect Bowie. But I don't really like his music all too much.
Spotify. Fave song “Suffragette City” 3.5
It was interesting. Not something that I will probably a lot, but interesting.
There's one legitimately good song, Starman, and the rest is about what you'd expect from David Bowie.
